EDITOR'S LETTER

MOSCHINO Brushstroke Polka Dot Pumps moschino.com

One of the many conversations we’ve been having at Modeliste lately is about who exactly should be gracing our covers given the world we now live in. We’ve always taken the position that the women we feature should have substance to them, which is why I’m delighted that Camilla Luddington is on our May cover. Known primarily for her role on Grey’s Anatomy, as Dr. Jo Karev (formerly Dr. Jo Wilson), Grey’s Anatomy, which just surpassed ER as the longest-running medical drama. Camilla has negotiated a life for herself that can somehow happily accommodate her long standing role on the hit ABC TV series as well as her biggest role as being a mother. She is passionate about both. I first met Camilla 7 years ago at another photoshoot when she was rising to stardom and have loved watched her evolve and grow into her many new roles. She is as open and funny as she is down-to-earth and radiantly beautiful. Be sure to read her full interview in our Model Diaries. Elsewhere in the issue, Modeliste Mode Around the Globe took some of our favorite social stars to the vibrant Caribbean island of Jamaica as well as to one of the world’s most picturesque paradises, The Maldives. We would also like to give a special thanks to Turkish Airlines for showing us the extraordinary culture, sites and amazing eats in Istanbul and for flying us in style to the Maldives. We hope this issue of Modeliste continues to inspire you.

MODELISTE | JUNE 2019 17

We first met your Grey’s Anatomy character, Dr. Jo Wilson (now Dr. Jo Karev) 6 seasons ago, and now with Grey’s Anatomy being the longest running prime time medical drama, tell us about journey and how you began your acting career. For as long as I can remember I wanted to act. I begged my parents to take me to dance, singing and acting classes on the weekend with the Italia Conti Drama school. From there I auditioned and got my first agent when I was 11. I grew up doing musical theatre and then when I moved to the US I studied for a year at the NYFA. It was finally when I moved to LA I got a visa that enabled me to work and I started auditioning. How would you describe a typical day on set? Every day is different. We always arrive and head into hair and makeup first, but sometimes what that is exactly depends on where your character storyline stands. For me the last few episodes has meant that grease is added to my hair to reflect Jo not “taking care of herself” and very minimal makeup applied. I wasn’t even allowed to curl my lashes let alone wear mascara. After this we usually head to set to rehearse the scene and soon after shoot. Hours are also different every day. We can work 4 hour days or we can work 16ish hour days. Can you give us any insight on what’s next for your character? Jo is at a breaking point. I can’t give much away but I can say she hits a fork in her road. A conversation with Meredith helps her decide what to do next. Where did you grow up? I grew up in Berkshire, England. My family are all still there so I get to go home and visit them as often as possible. What is one thing you miss the most about your hometown? I miss Christmas in England. It’s just so cosy. Going to London and seeing the Christmas lights, heading to the pub on Christmas Day for a drink. The holiday season makes me homesick. What's the wildest thing you've ever done in your life? Probably move to Los Angeles (where I only knew one person and was completely broke) and try to succeed in this crazy crazy industry. Ha!

CAMILLA LUDDINGTON What do you love most about being an actress? I love taking time to dig deep into other people’s experiences and try to apply them creatively to what a character is going through. I guess we get to constantly still play “make believe”. It always feels exciting even when the material you are doing is emotionally or physically challenging. What's a TV show you would like to make a cameo in? I would have LOVED to be in Game of Thrones. I’m utterly obsessed like the rest of the world. I would have played anything. I would have been totally fine with no lines and dragon stomping on me.

What's the best advice you have ever received? “You are enough.” I think so often we feel like we have to be something else, someone else, look different, fit in etc etc. I really truly hope that Hayden grows up feeling that she is enough. Because she is. We all are. Having recently become a mother of a beautiful daughter, Hayden, how do you think motherhood has changed you? What do you love most about being a mom? Every single day feels purposeful. I think before Hayden I would get to the evening and think, wait what did I actually do today? But with her, every day has a new memory and significance to me. Even when I’m just spending the day in sweatpants with her and we are playing around the house, it feels meaningful. The thing I love the most is having the connection to a human being I’ve never had before. The depth is indescribable. It’s both amazing and terrifying all at once.

How would you describe yourself in an emoji? ha. I use this one the most, so I guess this one. Describe your favourite “fan” experience. A couple years after the first tomb raider game came out I was at a restaurant and our server recognized my voice from the games. That was crazy. I think I fangirled out over her as much as she did me! What is one thing your fans don’t know about you? When I was 5 years old I won a talent show singing “me and little Andy” by Dolly Parton! What is something on your bucket list that you would love to accomplish in the next 5 years? I would love to run a marathon. My dad has run many and I love running. So hopefully one day we can run one together. Describe a typical day off for youhow do you like to spend your free time? I spend my free time with my daughter. Right now it means we “wash” her toys a lot. She loves pretending to give them a bubble bath, so we will get a big bowl of water and scrub them in the backyard. It’s actually so cute and fun. What is your #1 go-to beauty secret? Any kind of under eye patches you put in the fridge. God bless them on the mornings I wake up looking like I haven’t slept in years. Do you have any upcoming projects that you can tell us about? I just did three characters for an episode of Robot Chicken out soon!!!! I had an absolute blast. Way too much fun in the booth recording them. You’ll have to wait and see who I play though. What do you love most about Modeliste Magazine? I love that you use a female photographer! I realized the day I showed up to shoot that I expected a man to shoot the cover. In my experience more often than not it’s a guy. I love that you use Sarah Krick. She’s beyond talented and made me feel so comfortable which I don’t always feel when doing a photo shoot. She’s awesome.

BEGINNER’S GUIDE

THE RETINOL

to beautiful skin You have probably heard a lot about Retinol and how it is a great supplement to your daily skincare regimen. Retinol is a wonderful addition to your armamentarium against premature aging and yet, it is still underutilized and misused.

RETINOIDS vs RETINOL

Most Dermatologists would agree that in an ever-changing world of antiaging products, retinoids and retinol are mighty components to prevent and correct skin damage. To understand more about retinoids and retinol we turn to the expert, Board Certified dermatologist, Dr. William Schweitzer. He explains that “Retinoids have a chemical structure similar to Vitamin A and have a variety of uses in medicine where they regulate epithelial cell growth, improving the health of the skin. Retinol, also known as Vitamin A1, is a vitamin found in food and is also used a dietary supplement. Retinol is metabolized in the body to its’ active form, Retinoic acid. Retinoids are available in prescription strength such as Retin-A and Renova and Retinol can be found in over the counter products.”

THE BENEFIT

Retinol is essential for our eyesight and in maintaining the health of the skin. Retinoids are one of your best defenses against fine lines, wrinkles, age spots, improve acne and help with uneven pigmentation. “As we age our dermis becomes thinner and our epidermis thickens, the long term use of retinoids can help us delay the skin aging process” Dr. Schweitzer notes. Retinoids increase cell turnover, inhibit collagen breakdown, have antiinflammatory qualities, regulate sebum production and promote collagen synthesis.

HOW TO START

Retinoids are often misunderstood and therefore misapplied. “Retinoids are usually best applied under the supervision of a dermatologist as they can cause dryness and redness of the skin” Dr. Schweitzer warns. Often, retinoids can cause minor irritation, redness and even peeling of the skin. The skin usually becomes adjusted to irritation and inflammation improves or disappears.

Dr. Schweitzer’s tips to get you on your way to beautiful and healthy skin: WHEN TO START USING A

1 RETINOID OR RETINOL: your early 30’s is the best time to get started. At this age, you start to notice skin changes such as thinning skin and less elasticity. This is the best time to work on boosting collagen deep into the dermis to maintain your skin.

2 START SLOWLY: You might

start with a low dose retinol that is available over the counter. Apply a small amount to the face every other night to get your skin used to the product.

3 SET UP A ROUTINE: your goal

is to apply retinol nightly but give it a couple of weeks of every other night application to give the skin time to adjust.

4 BE PATIENT: retinol is not

something you rush! It can take up to 10 weeks to start to see improvement. Be patient and over time you will begin to see great changes on your skin.

5 TRANSITION SLOWLY: after 8-10 weeks of your first retinol regimen you can move up to a higher dose or use a Retinoid under the supervision of a dermatologist. Patience is key with this mighty ingredient!

MODELISTE | JUNE 2019 147

What's a TV show you would like to make a cameo in? There are A LOT of shows I love to watch. But, I’d much prefer to have the opportunity to audition and be cast based of my talent, hard work, and efforts in either a guest-star or recurring role.

Having previously been named as Supermodel of the Year, tell us about your journey in how you began your career My life changed overnight when I shot a cover and editorial for Vogue Italia by Steven Meisel in April 2004. I have always wanted to work in the fashion and entertainment industry and I have been very fortunate and am grateful for my career. As on our Hollywood’s rising stars, what do you love most about acting? My true creative passion is acting. I find myself drawn to character-driven roles and scripts where I’m forced to challenge and change myself, both physically and emotionally. With acting, every project and every role is a new adventure. I love to challenge myself, that’s a huge part of what draws me to a part. As an actor, you have to live the part, own the words and breathe life into the role. At the end of the day, the camera only wants to see something that’s truthful.

Where did you grow up? Connecticut.

What upcoming projects do you have that you can tell us about? Between Worlds just came out on Netflix. It is a dark, psychological thriller where I play Mary, the wife of Nicolas Cage. Mary died tragically in a fire, but instead of moving on, Mary cannot let go of her former life and in turn possesses a young woman’s body. She is determined to settle her unfinished business with the living.

What is one thing that your fans would be surprised to know about you? I have been playing the flute since I was 6 years old, briefly went to circus school and studied aerial silks, have trained in hand-to-hand combat and machete fighting.

The Haunting of Sharon Tate in theaters and On Demand now, is both a psychological and a spiritual film. The plot is inspired by an actual quote from Tate, from an interview published a year before her death in Fate Magazine, wherein she reveals having dreams about ghosts haunting her house and foreseeing her own death at the hands of a satanic cult. I put a lot of time and effort learning all that I could about Abigail Folger and did my best and due diligence to respectfully portray the person I was hired to play. We all worked extremely hard and put a lot of love, effort, and care into portraying these people and telling this story Grace and Grit out later this year is based on the best-selling true story is a one of courage, connection, and love beyond life. 148 JUNE 2019 | MODELISTE

What is one thing you miss the most about your hometown? I loved growing up in Connecticut! Sometimes I miss the fall, but not winter. And, I miss being able to take day trips to visit Mystic Seaport and Old Sturbridge Village, New England's largest outdoor living history museum. How would you describe your personality in 3 words? Unique. Generous. Open.

What inspires you daily? I find inspiration in the everyday. My biggest source of inspiration is nature Being outside, going on hikes, watching the sun rise and set helps get my creative juices flowing. I’m also inspired by risk. I love to take risks and be challenged. Starting something I have no idea how to finish but finding a way. The creative process itself brings me to a place of being totally present and that process itself is inspiring. What's the wildest thing you've ever done in your life? I love to travel and have adventures! The craziest thing I have ever done… Dangle off the top of the Edge of the Empire State Building for a photo shoot with Heatherette. I also climbed a mountain made of obsidian (lava glass) naked and also rode a rodeo bull naked for Tyler Shields photoshoots.

What is something on your bucket list that you would love to accomplish in the next 5 years? I truly just want to be happy and continue to work hard. Also, my husband and I would very much like to have children. How do you describe your personal style? My style is rather eclectic and always changing. I think that I’ve recently become more comfortable with being myself and not trying to fit into whatever mold people have tried to project onto me in the past. And, perhaps that comes with a combination of maturity, confidence and finding someone who truly loves and appreciates me as I am. As far as I’m concerned, there is no such thing as bad fashion; it is all a form of selfexpression. What's your current obsession? My Nintendo Switch. Whenever I’m traveling and not working, I’m playing my Switch. I have over 30 games (some of my favorites being: Zelda BOTW, Skyrim, Super Mario Odyssey, Diablo III, Layers of Fear, Super Mario Deluxe U, Yoshi’s Crafted World), and have collected well over 50 amiibos (I have even had some custom ones made). I love it! What is your #1 go-to beauty secret? Never go to sleep with makeup on. And… Always remember to drink water and wear sunscreen! What’s the best advice you have ever received? Be present. Don’t get caught up with whatever might happen tomorrow or what the next opportunity may be. Focus on today and right now, otherwise you’ll miss it What do you love most about Modeliste Magazine? I love that every issue features fun, fearless, strong, intelligent, and inspiring women.

and dramatic redwood forests, staggering bluffs enduring crashing waves, galleries showcasing local artists and crafts, and an appreciation for a different pace of life. Time slows to watch the whale migrations, the sea lions sunning in protective beach coves, fishing boats dotting the horizon, and stargazing undisturbed by bright city lights. Perhaps it was serendipity or simply fate, but the story Will Jackson shares of the small ad in the Wall Street Journal that led to the odyssey of The Inn at Newport Ranch feels like destiny. Days after his 91st birthday, Will is entertaining guests with his charm and humor as he recounts the unexpected journey from that daily East Coast commute from Connecticut to NYC to the present stunning Pacific panorama viewed from the spectacular dining room and singular 30 foot redwood dining table of the Inn he first conceived in 1987. Life changing events, architects who embraced his

vision above and beyond, a love and respect for nature and the allure of the Old West mystique, and an inherent joy in life, whimsy, and the meeting of antique and modern make the realization of Will Jackson’s dream a wonderful tale. Realizing his vision was not without challenges. The property has a history, a forgotten site of two now vanished redwood logging and mill towns of the 1870s and 1880s, Newport and Kibesillah, between Fort Bragg and Westport, California. Once home to the native Pomo coastal tribes, it has a story that has carried it forward to this incarnation as a working cattle ranch and Conde Nast award winning boutique hotel. An endeavor that wows with creative renditions in its three defining properties, architecture and design incorporating old and reclaimed redwood, unique repurposed antiques, and breathtaking views, The Inn at Newport Ranch opened in 2016 to accolades and recognition as one of Conde Nast Traveler’s Best New Hotels in the U.S.

Now grown to encompass over 2,000 acres of private reserve, over 1.5 miles of beachfront, 3 miles of contiguous ridge lines, and over 20 miles of trails from the coast to the redwood forest, its environmental ecosystems are beautifully preserved. The Main Inn honors the original footprint of the earlier inn bed and breakfast with an awe-inspiring architectural design and decor carried throughout the living and dining areas with feature fireplaces, library, the three second floor accommodations, and the lower level recreation room. Outside, a welcoming wrap around porch positions cozy seating for daydreaming, migrating whale sightings, cocktails and optimal sunset views. An outdoor kitchen and firepit is ready for events large and small and a 7-person rooftop hot tub is an amazing addition for panoramic views day and night. Every aspect of the Inn contributes to the warm and intimate atmosphere that defines every experience, whether a romantic or friend getaway, the perfect wedding, a retreat to uplift your soul, educate your mind, inspire your spirit or business. Viewed from the Main Inn, the striking contemporary Redwood House rises dramatically above the coastal bluffs, uniquely supported by 24 raw redwood trees. A west facing wall of glass highlights stunning ocean views. Three uniquely designed spacious suites with kitchenettes showcase distinctive fireplaces, cozy seating and artisan crafted mantles and headboards. Each ensuite bathroom reveals creative elements of design. Downstairs group spaces include a meeting room for retreats and conferences, sitting area, plus two private massage rooms.

The third guest space available is the owner’s spacious home, Sea Drum House, offering a modern escape in a separate four bedroom coastal accommodation with kitchen and optimal living and dining space. Stunning views and an element of seclusion perfect for wedding and special gatherings make this a wonderful addition to Newport Ranch. The interiors of each accommodation incorporate the native redwoods in unique and unexpected ways. Antique farm and logging equipment has been transformed into stunning chandeliers, lamps, or wall art. Historic photos enhance the connection with past and present along with the grazing cattle and cowboys on horseback rounding up the herd. Will’s childhood ice skates become door handles, and a discovery hunt for hidden treasures is a favorite guest pastime. His pride in details include his personal favorite walkin fireplace with stone seats in the dining hall and the spiral redwood root that anchors the Main Inn stairway. Actually, his boundless enthusiasm extends from rare redwood finds to antique discoveries, educational ideals, and the wonders of the oceanscape. 198 JUNE 2019 | MODELISTE

"In every walk with nature one receives far more than he seeks." - John Muir

To truly appreciate every aspect of the property, The Inn at Newport Ranch offers guests an ATV tour that thoroughly illuminates all aspects of the land and sea, flora and fauna. The daily tours are led by the delightful staff at the Ranch, who infuse each tour with fun facts and a deep history of the area. Otis Brown -- historian, naturalist, guardian of coast, trails and trees -- is another staff treasure who charms guests with his easy humor and knowledgeable local perspective. Guests will find hiking, biking, barbecue picnic lunches, sundowner cocktail getaways, and horseback rides are arranged to maximize the experience. Nearby beach accesses are opportunities for fishing and whale watching tours, sea kayaking, and even diving. Local wineries are highly recommended for tastings. We learned from Otis that his commitment to The Inn at Newport Ranch and the acres he oversees is also a family affair. The extensive organic garden that is the farm to table link to the exceptional dining at the Inn is the domain of his wife, and their children share their passions. The fresh produce is central to the dining experience at the Inn, which is helmed by Executive Chef Cooper Bogard. Breakfast is typically ranch size, preparing guests for a day in the fresh air and great outdoors with fruits and egg or tofu main dishes. The dinner menu typically includes a fresh fish, meat, and vegetarian option, fresh vegetable dish and delectable soup. Wine and canopies are sundowner treats and the refrigerator is stocked with refreshments and snacks for guests to raid day or night. Discovering the natural beauty of California’s northern coast is an exhilarating adventure and a stay at the Inn at Newport Ranch is a superlative boutique experience, a discovery that everyone from Conde Nast to Andrew Harper to Modeliste finds memorable and meaningful. In the words of John Muir, “In every walk with nature one receives far more than he seeks.”

WINE TASTING

MAPLE CREEK WINERY, ARTEVINO ANDERSON VALLEY, MENDOCINO COUNTY - YORKVILLE, CA www.maplecreekwine.com

U

nexpected delights are the reward of a road trip. For Modeliste, Maple Creek Winery and its owner, Tom Rodrigues, are a wonderful discovery and delightful reward in the Yorkville Highlands of Anderson Valley. On your winding journey on Highway 128 to California’s northern coast, an unforgettable wine tasting and captivating story makes this a must stop along the way. Anderson Valley is known as a premier wine growing region for Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. As we enjoyed our wine tasting at Maple Creek Winery, owner Tom Rodrigues shared his story, the transition from his successful career as an artist in Marin County to a career in the art of winemaking in Yorkville, Anderson Valley. The oft told story is delivered with an artist’s sense of whimsy and a pride and passion for both of his crafts. ARTEVINO: the name captures the essence of his creations, the culmination of art and the art of winemaking, and the results are a treat for the palate and palette.

His history as an artist designing labels for other wineries, such as Far Niente and Nickel & Nickel, is now manifested in his own branding, each varietal uniquely personalized in his ARTEVINO “Vineyard Series”. The samplings each had a story and Tom brought the process to life, alerting the senses to discriminate and appreciate each subtle difference and nuance. His work with Kerry Damskey, a friend and consulting winemaker, has led to perfection in French style winemaking. One of their many secrets is the advantage of small lots resulting in award winning wines highlighted by an Estate Chardonnay, Anderson Valley Pinot Noir, Largo Ridge Zinfandel, Estate Merlot and Symphony. A lovely crisp 2015 Flora Blush captured my heart as well. The scenic route from California Highway 101 to the coast winds its way through a patchwork quilt of picturesque vineyards into a forest of giant redwoods forming a canopy filtering sunshine through fluttering leaves.

TOM RODRIGUES MODELISTE | JUNE 2019 203

The renowned twists and turns of Highway 128 capture the magic of nature in all its shades of green, around each bend in the road a perfect canvas is revealed, a blend of color and light that inspires the artist within.

204 JUNE 2019 | MODELISTE

Nature’s art is a presence everywhere, manifested in broad swaths of landscapes and fine details of grapes on the vine and flowers blossoming on the forest floor, the range of blues in ocean and sky described in names like cerulean and azure, sapphire and turquoise. As art tells a story, so does each artist. At Maple Creek Winery, Tom Rodrigues embodies the creative spirit and passion of an artist whose creative journey led from his early fascination with stained glass to painting on large canvases to designing elegant wine labels to finding new inspiration in the art of winemaking. Modeliste recommends this unexpected delight as a genuine reward of a road trip to California’s northern coast.

SKUNK TRAIN FT. BRAGG, CA www.skunktrain.com

J

ourney back in time with a ride on the vintage steam locomotive Skunk Train, a connection to the rich logging history of Fort Bragg and Mendocino. The world famous Redwood Route has carried families over a century, venturing along Pudding Creek Estuary through meadows, canyons, and stunning redwood forest, with views of trees many over 300 feet tall and 1000 years old. Once the link for logging families and workers as well as commercial transport of all kinds of goods, lumber and logs, the railroad has operated continuously since 1885. The train depot remains at the center of Fort Bragg, (once an early army garrison and Pomo Indian reservation), and current tourist center, a must for visitors to enjoy this piece of history. Logs from this area rebuilt San Francisco after the 1906 earthquake, its significance undeniable in California history and in railroad history as well.

MODELISTE | JUNE 2019 205

The Skunk Train is an enjoyable experience for all ages, its name origin is always the first question curious children and disconcerted adults ask at the ticket counter. The young conductors enjoy sharing the story of the once popular self propelled rail motorcars or railbuses introduced in 1925 whose foul smelling gasoline engines and smoky pot-bellied stoves led to the lasting description of Skunk Train, though the hour tour now boasts fresh air and scenic views. A narrative of the train history also points out special details throughout the tour along the 40 mile track.

206 JUNE 2019 | MODELISTE

The newest addition to the Skunk Train experience is Rail Biking. After the train ride, guests are offered a fun fitness exercise of biking the rails on specialized 2 person rail bikes that are a memorable experience and photo op perfect for Instagram and Facebook friends. Fun for all ages, the quiet 7 mile ride offers glimpses of wildlife along the way, and an assist with an electric motor if desired.

Walking the hills can be a challenge, but it is undeniably the best way to discover San Francisco’s secrets. The newest of the old, The Emblem artfully celebrates the revival of an era that impacted the culture of 1950s America, its art and literature, its iconoclastic disturbance and challenges to a cookie cutter post war conformity. The Beat Generation heralded an upheaval in thought and expression, a questioning of norms and morals and meaning in life, defiant and outspoken spokesmen whose writings, thoughts, words, liberated speech and freedom of expression that laid the groundwork for the cultural explosion of the Sixties. The names still inspire new generations of thinkers and poets and dreamers, Allen Ginsberg, Jack Kerouac, William Burroughs, and inspire hoteliers like Viceroy to revision a hotel in the heart of San Francisco dedicated in artful tribute to those whose voices defined the Beat generation and created new expression in art, music, and literature. The Emblem Hotel is celebrating its grand opening after a total renovation and rededication to the colorful roots of the Fifties Beat culture in San Francisco.

The historic site has been a hotel since San Francisco rebuilt after the devastating earthquake and fire of 1906 and, through many manifestations and renovations, it ultimately attracted a literary clientele as The Rex, and boasted a voluminous library. That heritage is honored in the iconic wall of books, an element of decor that defines and distinguishes The Emblem, welcoming guests to a unique concept hotel. From that dramatic entry, creativity and nuanced expression are everywhere. A black and white video that captures the spirit, romance, and energy of the hotel engages behind reception to be enjoyed while refreshing with a welcoming glass of champagne. Eyecatching and tantalizing, the unique design of the lounge draws you in with stunning walls of art, contemporary framed bar, welcoming seating, and a spectacular feature fireplace (??) that is truly mesmerizing. Throughout your stay you will continue to discover details, surprises that inspire questions and awaken curiosity.

The atmosphere is vibrant, capturing a contemporary version of a jazz-inspired speakeasy. The Emblem sparks an energy that is contagious and spirited. Unique portraits dominate and draw the eye; a collage of vintage photos featuring San Francisco’s Beat legends immediately captures interest. The wall of framed pages of Walt Whitman’s Leaves of Grass is intriguing and inspires questions and a deeper conversation. A club vibe extends to a spacious conference event room, perfect for live music, accommodating dancing, receptions, celebrations or business deliberations meeting a full range of tech needs. For a friendly game of pool to highlight cocktail hours, the boardroom quickly converts with a flip and cues magically appear. This is a scene that welcomes and brings guests together.

Not to be missed, The Emblem will arrange an Underground Concierge Walking Tour of San Francisco Beat landmarks with stops at famed hangouts, dives, bars and storied eateries once frequented by the counterculture Beat generation legends. Iconic City Lights Bookstore remains a landmark and literary center where Lawrence Ferlinghetti, now 100 years old, famously published Allen Ginsberg’s first work, HOWL, and set off the chain of events that brought the Beat movement west to San Francisco. The Vesuvius bar is unchanged and Kerouac Way is now a muraled famed stop of On the Road devotees. The tour is the best way to discover the meaning and impact of these voices,

walk the walk and echo the hip talk, learn and appreciate the names of the Beat generation who challenged and transformed literary conventions, societal norms and political views that still reverberate in 2019.
