It’s been quite unimaginable and difficult to see what has taken place in our current situation with the global pandemic of COVID-19. A life of social distancing and Zoom meetings replacing the hustle and bustle energy of our everyday life. This has quickly become our new norm. During this time, it seems that everyone also has been gripped by the same questions- What does the future hold? How will our industry recover? And, also, even more importantly —how can we learn, adapt and create change for the better? For all the disheartening damages we’re seen and challenges we’ve endured, it is also evident that there is opportunity. When we come back from this crisis—which we will—we should come back with purpose: stronger and more thoughtful and more creative and sustainable in what we do. So in that spirit of optimism, I’m thrilled to announce our Self-Care and SelfLove issue. Each one of us could all use a little hope right now. In this issue you’ll find new ways to dress for your next Zoom call, how to rejuvenate your daily skincare routine, and how to pamper yourself during this time of seltering in place. We need to talk honestly and openly about what individuals and our industry are going through, and just as importantly, we need to start imagining what comes next.

Where are you from? I was born and raised in Diepholz, Germany. What made your decision to move to New York? After working in Europe for quite a bit I thought it was time to dream bigger and see what else is out there for me. The first time I came to New York I only stayed for a few months to find an agency and to meet some potential clients. After that went well I said to myself: you need to move here! What languages do you speak? My mother language is German and I am fluent in English. While being quarantined with my boyfriend in France I started to learn French online to be a little productive during this quiet time. (And I can order a beer in Spanish). What three words would you use to describe yourself? I would say I am humble, polite and sensitive. Basically a very typical Cancer. What has been a highlight in your career? Definitely being part of the VSFS 2018 was and will forever be one of my favorite career moments. What is your favorite part about traveling? What I love most about traveling for work is for sure getting to see certain parts of the world that I would have never been able to visit on my own.
What are two staple items in your closet? A nice oversized black blazer and a black strappy heel! With either or even both of these you can give any outfit a chic touch to it. What are three beauty products you cannot live without? A moisturizer ( I currently use Augustinus Bader), a Make-Up remover ( the best in my opinion is the Bioderma Make-Up removing micelle solution) and an eyebrow gel (my all time favorite is the clear eyebrow gel from Anastasia Beverly Hills). What are your tricks to staying fit? It's all about finding a Balance for yourself. Find a routine. Find workouts that you enjoy to do and plan your workout-days and chose your cheat days so you don’t slip into uncontrolled and lazy behavior. Do you feel that becoming a Victoria's Secret model has made a difference in your career? Yes. It definitely helped me to get more recognition from brands and clients that maybe didn’t know my name before. What is one thing about you that has never changed? I always have and forever will be a big family person. I love to be at home and to be with my family as much as I can. Would you consider yourself and extrovert or introvert? That’s a very tricky question to answer. I would say I am both. In my job, on set, at events and parties I am very much outgoing and not shy at all. But whenever I am home and in one of those ''I don’t want to see and talk to anybody'' moods I can become the biggest introvert ever! Can you share any projects you have been working on? I have been working on a charity project very close to my heart and I can’t wait to share more about it very soon!
Can you tell us about the best place you've traveled to and a place you want to travel? One of the best places I’ve been to was definitely New Zealand. I shot a Cover story there and the landscape was just incredible. Also shooting a bikini campaign in the Maldives was very special.
If you could go back in time and have dinner with one person, who would that be? George Michael so I could ask him to perform at my wedding one day.
What is your favorite cheat meal? I am obsessed with Nutella and I love bread and butter. So basically any pastry that has Nutella in or on it won’t be save around me on a cheat day! Other than that I love a great cheeseburger, fries and a LOT of ketchup.
If you would tour the country, would it be by motorbike, sports car or camper van? Camper Van

IN THE GLOW Dr. Barbara Sturm
Dr. Barbara Sturm’s unique, sciencebased products have achieved cult status with skincare devotees worldwide, and her philosophy of healing the skin has challenged both aggressive approaches and the conventional wisdom. Dr. Barbara Sturm is a German aesthetics doctor, widely renowned for her anti-inflammatory philosophy and her non surgical anti-aging skin treatments. The complete Dr. Barbara Sturm Molecular Cosmetics line is formulated for those who yearn for an uncomplicated yet highly effective, science-based skincare regimen that provides hydration, nutrition and contributes to skin regeneration. Modeliste had the opportunity to sit down with the world renowned doctor, and this is what we learned.
What sparked your interest in aesthetic medicine? I have always been an artistically aesthetic person, although it did not originate from a beauty angle. In fact, I grew up as a tomboy and didn’t touch an eyeliner until I was 24. My Grandma was a pharmacist and my Mother was a lab doctor and I learned a lot about herbal medicine and ingredient science from them when I was growing up. My Grandma used to mix everything and make medicine for us when we needed products. Those were early influences. As a doctor, skin and cartilage have similar properties and susceptibilities to inflammation – performing injectables in one led naturally to performing injectables in the other. What was the inspiration behind the creation of your line? As a doctor and scientist, I was ingredient science driven, always aiming for new, cutting-edge techniques and treatments. When I started injecting Hyaluronic Acid and Botox, I translated the science from the orthopedics into the skin and created both blood plasma-based injectables and facials in 2002, and a bespoke moisturizing (MC1) cream for my patients soon after.
When patients asked me to recommend an entire skin care regimen, and I was dismayed by my survey of the existing options, I set out to create my own fundamental and effective skincare line. Clinically tested ingredient science is the foundation on which I built my line. What makes the line so unique? When I began developing my Dr. Barbara Sturm Molecular Cosmetics line, I did a survey of then-available skincare and I was shocked by the primitive, non-ingredient science, non-efficacy-based characteristics of skincare options. Products were based on empty, non-scientific marketing concepts and full of inflammatory ingredients. I knew anti-inflammatory medicine, I had working relationships with several top ingredient science academic researchers, and I had already created one single, advanced science cream in my lab that was very effective. So, I set out to create the fundamental products in a skincare regime myself. I’m not a fan of mainstream thinking, and relished challenging the skincare industry and the conventional wisdom.
What do you love most about your line? I love it most when someone tells me my line changed the fundamental health of their skin. Besides that, I really love science, and I love inventing new products. You've created Anti-Pollution Drops and Food supplements that protect against the damage of pollution, blue light radiation from phones and UV rays which are so prevalent in today's society. Can you tell us more about these products and why they're so important? Flat screen monitors, computers, mobile phones and tablets emit High Energy Visible light, or “HEV” - a blue light that’s also emitted by the sun. HEV light penetrates deeply, reaching the hypodermis and making it potentially more damaging to the skin than UV rays. HEV light exposure can cause premature aging, dryness, impaired skin healing, compromised melanogenesis, sensitivity, wrinkles, uneven tone and texture, and sagging skin. HEV is also shown in studies to cause an inflammatory cascade – a skin killer that in turn affects skin healing, skin barrier function, cellular cycles and breakouts.
Because we are spending so much time at home due to the Coronavirus pandemic, our already-high screen time has spiked up to 50% according to Internet service providers. So more than ever you need to protect yourself from HEV. My AntiPollution Drops protect your skin against both the air pollution that everybody is living in, and also from HEV rays – a screen against screens. The Skin Protect Complex in my Anti-Pollution Drops includes extracts derived from marine microorganisms that strengthen the skin’s defense against pollution and Purslane, a plant extract that provides potent anti-oxidation against the free radicals unleashed by HEV, while combating the irritating effects of pollution. The ingredient science also includes Cocoa Seed Extract, which builds a shield-like film on the skin to protect against HEV rays. I take these with my Anti-Pollution Food, a supplement I invented around potent antioxidants and 5 Adaptogens – clinically studied compounds used in Indian and Chinese medicine that help the body and skin to adapt to physical and chemical stressors. Your anti-inflammatory lifestyle is praised by many, can you tell us about it? As a Doctor with an anti-inflammatory background, my philosophy for skincare is getting inflammation under control and I focus on hydration, nutrition and maintaining strong skin barrier function to optimise skin performance. Inflammation is the body’s response to irritation and injury, and it can cause everything from acne, to premature aging, redness and enlarged pores, to other serious skin disease and dysfunction including psoriasis, rosacea and perioral dermatitis. Getting inflammation under control is essential for body and skin health. It is defined by getting enough sleep, having an anti-inflammatory diet, reducing stress, no smoking or drug use, moderating alcohol, and using protection against sun exposure, pollution and HEV rays. I go to bed early and get a good night’s sleep, wake up early and watch the sunrise, do a little work out, apply my face mask and then get to work. During the day, I like to make sure I drink enough water and eat an anti-inflammatory diet. I make sure to take my supplements every day and never go without my skincare regimen. I try to avoid negative stress, disharmony and too much caffeine. It is not a difficult lifestyle to lead, it simply requires a little education and a little mindfulness.

What products would you recommend to achieve the best results with an antiinflammatory lifestyle? My philosophy is that every skincare routine, regardless of age or gender should be simple yet effective; it should combat inflammation, deeply hydrate and nurture the skin, and be packed with highly active anti-aging properties without the use of aggressive ingredients. A good skincare regime need only include a cleanser, an exfoliator twice a week – like my Facial Scrub or Enzyme Cleanser to gently slough off dead skin and impurities – a serum that’s packed with potent, active ingredients and intensive hydration like my Hyaluronic Serum and a great moisturizer. This covers the skin’s fundamental needs. What are your must-have products from your line for Spring? I would say the key products for Spring don’t vary wildly from your regular skincare routine, but you should be mindful of a few influences. If you use a richer version of the face cream in the winter, due to drier skin, you most likely can start going back to a lighter version in Spring. Sun strength increases, and it's time to start using a true broad spectrum (blocking against UVA and UVB rays) product like my Dr. Barbara Sturm Sun Drops. You should also make sure to gently exfoliate your skin more regularly (in the winter too much exfoliation can rid your skin of much needed moisture and prompt excessive sebum production to compensate, which can lead to acne and other skin dysfunction). Springtime creates a new inflammatory influence in addition to UV rays – pollen. So it is important to protect skin and body from the ravages of pollen exposure, with Anti-Pollution Drops, protection of the skin barrier function using high concentration and mixed molecular weight hyaluronic acid in both my Hyaluronic Serum or Super AntiAging Serum, and in the suddenly stronger Springtime sun, a healing post-sun exposure Face Mask can be quite reparative. Any upcoming product launches you can tell us about? Dr. Barbara Sturm: Yes! I’m launching an especially innovative new product - my Scalp Serum. Skincare goes beyond the face and studies have shown that the condition of the scalp plays a vital part in the production of healthy, strong hair. My Scalp Serum adds intense hydration and has a calming effect, helping to treat common scalp issues such as dryness and irritation and supporting scalp health for beautiful hair.

What is your own personal daily skincare regime? I’m time-short, so I need my skincare routine to be simple. For starters, I rarely wear makeup, and generally replace it or enhance minimal makeup with my Glow Drops. A few days a week, I apply my hydrating Face Mask first thing in the morning, while drinking my latte and responding to overnight emails. While skin-smoothing lasers, peels, fillers and Botox are incredibly simple noninvasive procedures, there are a lot of new and innovative procedures also available if you're looking to significantly rejuvenate your face. Dr. Demetri Arnaoutakis is one of the most renowned plastic surgeons in the United States and worldwide. Here is what we learned about what procedures we need to try next!
What inspired you to become a Plastic Surgeon? When I was in medical school, I was totally mesmerized by surgery and facial anatomy. All my life I played sports and I feel like in surgery I am also participating in a team sport. From using my hands, to the artistry involved with plastic surgery to interacting with other doctors and nurses, it is challenging but so rewarding. Plus, I love having the opportunity to meet new people on a daily basis and to have a positive impact on their life! What is your specialization? I specialize in exclusively facial plastic surgery, botox, filler injections and hair transplants. What do you see as the top procedure trends at the moment? There has been a huge trend toward minimally invasive procedures. Currently, I am one of the few facial plastic surgeons in the country who offer FaceTite. This is a revolutionary new technology from InMode which helps “melt fat� and tighten skin at the same time without the need for surgery. There is minimal downtime and really patients get an excellent result.
What do you think is the best way to combat wrinkles? Preventative botox is certainly something to consider! I tell my patients in their early 30’s that they can start with annual or even semi-annual injections to prevent the lines from deepening as you age. Of course a good skin care regimen, sun avoidance and staying hydrated help too. Fillers seem to be all the rave at the moment, tell us the best spots to get filler to create a natural lift. I love injecting filler high in the cheekbones to restore volume there. It can really help provide a natural lift without looking overdone. What is a Botox lip flip? A small amount of botox can be injected into the muscle above the lip. This helps roll out the lip more without injecting filler. Patients who want more of a natural pout and are fearful of filler often get this done. Are there any negative consequences to using fillers and Botox? There are always risks to any procedure we do. That is why it is essential to trust your face to a specialist and someone who performs a lot of botox and filler injections.
What additional treatments do you suggest to achieve a more youthful appearance? I think radiofrequency microneedling with Morpheus8 is an awesome new treatment for a youthful appearance. It works great to tighten skin, improve fine lines, acne scars and texture. There is minimal downtime and the procedure takes less than an hour. Most popular treatment? Currently, I do about 12-15 morpheus8 treatments a week! Surgically, I perform a lot of buccal fat removal to contour the lower face as well as neck microliposuction. What should your clients know before getting filler? Make sure they research their injector and only go to someone who has a lot of experience. Any new upcoming treatments/procedures you will be offering? FaceTite is the latest and greatest for nonsurgical minimally invasive facial contouring. Olivia Jordan has had many successes in her career; Miss USA 2015 and Sports Illustrated Model of 2019 being some of many. As a model of over fifteen years, TV host, and professional speaker she has obtained a lot of experience in the industry and takes passion in using her voice to spread the knowledge she has obtained. How would you describe your personal brand? I was very honored that our fabulous photographer, Ryan Chua, described my brand as "effortless". Well that is the goal- although sometimes it takes more effort than I'd like to admit to appear "effortless"! What are three words that describe you? Optimistic, loving, and vulnerable. What inspired you to become an influencer and what is now your favorite part of being one now? I have been modeling now for over 15 years. I got into social media because I saw the modeling work going that way and I didn't want to miss out on work opportunities. I never anticipated that I would be able to genuinely connect with people through this medium and that has been a surprise and delight. I don't think I would still be here if it was just to share my modeling portfolio. I love to share my heart and connect with the many people on this platform open to doing the same. How would you describe your stay at the Hard Rock Hotel Los Cabos? ALL INCLUSIVE. It has been so fun to prance around without a purse or even a wallet and be able to take advantage of the most delectable omelette's each morning and spicy margaritas by the pool in the afternoon. What were you looking forward to most when coming onto this trip? I had never been to Cabo before this trip so I was looking forward to seeing why so many people choose it as their vacation destination. 100 MAY 2020 | MODELISTE
What was your favorite part about the trip? I loved the boat tour with Cabo Adventures. We got to sail along the shore past the iconic Love Beach and the Love Rock and have a relaxing day diving in and paddle boarding around the cove. Seeing Wales swimming along the coast alongside was the unexpected icing on the cake. What would you say is your spirit animal and why? I have always felt connected to dolphins. I love that they laugh and play and jump so freely. I hope I can get as much enjoyment out of life as dolphins seem to get out of every day. What is something you learned about Cabo during your stay? I had no idea that California meant "hot oven". We had an incredible tour guide on our way to Todo Santos that knew all the fun facts and history of Baja California and I loved learning a bit of what made Cabo such a tourist destination and a respite for artists from all over the world. What is something you always travel with? I always travel with my Chamomile tea. I love to have a hot cup of tea before bed and make sure to always pack it in my carry-on so I am ready. Do you have a beauty ritual? My beauty ritual is sunscreen, sunscreen and more sunscreen. I spent my teens in tanning beds and saw the effects of sun exposure and wrinkles sneak in by 20! I did a major skin care overhaul and made daily Zinc sunscreen the core part of my morning skincare routine (no matter if I plan to be outside or not). I reapply often when I spend a lot of time in the sun and brought 3 different hats, a sun shirt, and sunglasses for full protection on this trip. What is your favorite fashion trend at the moment? High waisted everything. As a long torso girl I have lived my whole life with the bottom part of my stomach popping out from too short tops. I am obsessed with high waisted denim and leggings. I think they are so flattering on everyone and I keep hoping this is one trend that will stand the test of time.
How do you stay up to date with beauty, fashion brands, and trends? I don't often keep up with brands and trends. I try to lean into what feels right. One of my favorite dresses I brought on this trip is 10 years old! I think its important to buy pieces that I LOVE and keep finding new ways to wear them through the years. Trends change too quickly to keep up with and anytime I am dressed in something that makes me feel good- I feel like I shine my brightest. What is your favorite accessory to wear daily? I wear a simple dainty pearl necklace from Iconery that I am obsessed with. It is delicate and looks lovely alone or layered with other pieces. My newest favorite accessory is my wedding band. I opted for a no-brand simple gold band that I could wear anywhere and everywhere. When I am on trips and on jobs I leave my diamond ring behind for safety, so I love that I never have to take off my band or worry about drawing too much attention. What is something you would like to say to your fans? I am grateful that you all keep sticking with me! I have been through many different life chapters over the past 7 years of being on Instagram and I am so lucky that many of you stuck with me through all the ups and downs of my career and life. Thank you for growing up with me and allowing me to evolve into the person I am meant to be. Are you working on any exciting projects? I am writing more these days. I hope to have something to announce in that space in the near future; but for now, hopefully people are starting to see more of my voice come through in my captions. What goal do you want to fulfill this year? I would love to give a Ted talk. It has been on my heart for some time to share my survivor story and I hope that magic comes together so that I may give hope to the many women and men survivors of sexual assault that are still struggling down the long and winding path to healing. 3 things you'd like to check off on your Bucket List. 1.) Skydiving 2.) Traveling to Greece. 3.) Publishing a book. Where do you wish to travel next? I think London is next up for me and my husband, Jay. Jay is from London and we have yet to visit his family in the summer. I would love to go spend time with his loved ones and explore a little bit of England in the warmer months. What advice would you give to someone who is going to Cabo for their first time? Bring a jacket or sweater for the cooler nights. What inspired you to work with Modeliste Magazine? This is my second trip with Modeliste Magazine and I came back because I had such a great time with the people on the last trip. This adventure exceeded any expectations as it was such a beautiful group and a much needed reunion with my longtime friend and former roommate, Nadia. I am so lucky that our lives keep bringing us together in these magical ways and we had the best time getting to know the women behind the magazine- Amy and Kaila, and all the other's that showed up for this adventure.

Nadia Mejia, also known for many as Miss California, has expanded her career as a model and singer. She has had great success as an influencer with her genuine content and the personality she eludes. My brand is constantly evolving as I grow, but there is one truth and message that I want to get across to girls on social media since the age of 17 & it’s for every girl to LOVE the skin they’re in and break free of social media comparison. I stand by self love & for each and every person to be 10000% authentically themselves. What are three words that describe you? Compassionate, Ambitious, & Dorky What inspired you to become an influencer and what is now your favorite part of being one now? It kind of just happened to be honest. I became successful through my modeling and got a lot of publicity from brands and won Miss California so my numbers just continually grew. My favorite part is I have a platform where people can listen to what I have to say! How would you describe your stay at the Hard Rock Hotel Los Cabos? UNREAL! The hotel was absolutely stunning, my room was triple the size of my one bedroom apartment, the breakfast buffet made my mouth water everyday, & I couldn’t have imagined a better resort to stay at in Mexico! What were you looking forward to most when coming onto this trip? Seeing my bestie, Olivia Jordan! We found out 4 days before leaving that we were both on this trip and absolutely lost it! Quality time with my big sister — what more could I ask for! What was your favorite part about the trip? So many highlights honestly. I loved spending time with the influencers, but my ultimate highlight was meeting Amy & Kaila and developing a genuine relationship with the people who put the trip and magazine together! One night, the three of us were covered in glow paint, dancing at a KIDS CLUB, living our best lives with no worry in the world. It was a moment I’ll never forget! What would you say is your spirit animal and why? Hmmmm. If a giraffe and a monkey had a baby it would probably be me. I’m long, lanky, and awkward like a giraffe but am wild and energized with a funny personality like a monkey.
What is something you learned about Cabo during your stay? We took a tour into Todos Santos and realized the population was fully European and American in the most authentic Mexican town & got all of the facts about the city. It was absolutely gorgeous! What is something you always travel with? My daily devotional! I have to start every morning with a little dose of Jesus! Do you have a beauty ritual? On vacation, I stay away from heavy makeup but love a tinted sunscreen, cream blush, and tinted chapstick. You look like a natural goddess with a little bit of help that won’t make you breakout. What is your favorite fashion trend at the moment? My favorite fashion trend forever is going to be vintage tees. My grandpa hands me down every Harley Davidson T he owns and I look like I’m some edgy girl who goes thrift shopping when in reality, nope — just Papa Paul’s wardrobe! How do you stay up to date with beauty, fashion brands, and trends? Other influencers, Duh! Hahahah...but really. I love following girls that are uplifting, fashionable, inspiring, and RELATABLE! That is key to getting a follow from me. What is your favorite accessory to wear daily? A day without mini hoops on my ears is a day wasted. What is something you would like to say to your fans? I had seen plenty of my influencer friends travel with them and it looked amazing. I received an email asking to join a trip & I said yes which changed my life because now I have a new little family. Three words that describe me must be: dreamer, sensitive and caring. What inspired you to become an influencer and what is now your favorite part of being one now? I never thought of being an influencer, I just wanted to do what I love and that was traveling, fashion, taking photos and that lead to becoming an influencer and I didn't expect that! I love my Job nowadays because i Can be my own boss i Can follow my own creative ideas and grow by my own. I love meeting new people all around the world and traveling to amazing places because of my job. What was your favorite part about The Hard Rock Hotel? My stay at the Hard Rock Hotel in Los Cabos was dreamy, I enjoyed the little vacations we had, I loved meeting new friends and having fun all day long! Maybe a cat? haha I feel like I was a cat in another life What is something you learned about Cabo during your stay? That it's a beautiful place and lots of amazing opportunities to see whales. What is something you always travel with? Fake tan - I don't lay out, so always bring it with me (especially when going to Mexico)! Do you have a beauty ritual? Yes and it's way too long and complicated to write haha but it consists of lots of face masks, moisturizer and eye creams.
