WELCOME TO THE ISSUE 2020 has left many of us feeling an overwhelming sense of despair in the face of unimaginable adversity. The challenges are seen everywhere: From the global COVID-19 pandemic, to the senseless acts of police brutality and systemic racism with little to no consequence or justice prevailing. Fires have ravaged much of the west coast of the United States illustrating our ever-growing climate emergency, and we mourned the loss of Supreme Court Justice, Ruth Bader Ginsberg, a lifelong advocate and architect of the legal fight for women's rights, LGBTQ+ rights, and equality for all. Ruth Bader Ginsberg dedicated her career to ensuring that marginalized groups received justice and was known for tactfully dissenting in court. "Fight for the things that you care about, but do it in a way that will lead others to join you,” she said. We all need hope and optimism in our lives, now more than ever. It may feel difficult to find during this tumultuous time, however it also feels more essential than ever. It’s part of our shared humanity, a source of inspiration and empowerment, and keeps us focused on paving the way for a brighter future. Modeliste continues to showcase diverse, poignant and inspiring individuals who use their voice to advocate for real, lasting change throughout our communities and around the world. It is our shared hope for us all to feel empowered and committed to building a brighter, better future for everyone. Our Cover Star Nazanin Mandi exemplifies these same values as she stated in our recent interview that, “When you're authentically yourself, to me, you are the most powerful, empowering, and motivating.” It is by joining forces and working together that true change is possible, and in that, Modeliste stands united.

As October's Guest Editor of Modeliste Magazine, it is of the utmost importance to not only be a motivating force but to also lead with transparency when it comes to my personal journey because truthfully, if we all spoke about our personal experiences freely, we would all discover we have WAY more in common than we perceive. I'm here to tell you life doesn't get easier, we just become stronger if we choose to put in the internal work .. and the work never ends. Battling Depression in my 20's, Anxiety and Body Dysmorphia (to this day) has falsely implemented fear that has in the past stopped me from reaching MY full potential. If this is you, you are not alone, and the battle to defeat a toxic mindset is no easy feat ... but it can be done. Once we commit to our goals and understand that the foundation to true success (whatever that means to you) is motivated by our wellbeing is the day our life truly begins to transform. YOU CAN ACHIEVE PURPOSE AND PASSION SIMULTANEOUSLY. Be direct in your "wants" but flexible in your approach. Love yourself more than any form of negativity thrown your way and know that patience is one of your greatest virtues. I wish you all endless gratitude, peace, strength and happiness in every aspect of your being. Where are you from? I'm from Valencia, California.
You've been a singer and a dancer since the age of three, a model from the age of 10. How has growing up in the entertainment industry influenced the way that you see it today? Growing up in the entertainment industry is night and day from when I was younger. Social media has made a huge impact in the industry. Now you see all different walks of talent, and Instagram is now the modern day resume, honestly. It's a blessing and a curse at times. It's a blessing because you can literally be anything you want to be. And if you just live in it and promote it, like people will really get into it. And a lot of people have made careers out of it. So, that's an amazing part of it. And of course, it has its dark side, which you guys know what that is. But, it's literally night and day from when I was child. Which brings us to, you are a certified life coach and on your podcast called Ladies Like Us you openly discuss problems women face daily. Can you share what inspired you to become a life coach and create this amazing podcast? What inspired me to become a life coach was, I actually started out on Instagram just putting up my own experiences, and I would write them in certain ways. And a lot of people would relate, they would DM me. I went through depression, I went through anxiety, and I started talking about it. And then I would start putting up quotes that I live by, or stuff that I really resonate with, or believe in. And that really got people's attention. And I was like, "You know what? I love to make people feel good." I would DM them back, we would talk. And I was like, "You know what? This is something I could really do." I have a career, and I believe I have a purpose. And my purpose, I truly feel, is to help people reach their fullest potential. So I was like, "You know what? I want to take this seriously. Let me become a certified life coach." And that's what I did. Can you share your morning beauty routine? Coffee. Let's start with that. Let's start with coffee. And after that, I wash my face, I put some lotion on it, and I start my day. My beauty routine really takes place at night, to be honest with you. But I try to keep things pretty minimal. I try to keep things pretty organic. So, I don't do much. I'm not going to lie. But I'm consistent. Consistency is key. I don't sleep with my makeup, unless I'm drunk. Like, that's the only ... That's it.

How have the current restrictions motivated you to get more creative? Oh. The current restrictions have motivated me, in actually a lot of ways. I've had to get more creative at home with in-home shoots. But it has also taught me to slow down. And I needed, apparently, something like this to help me slow down. And it has. And it has taught me to live in the present moment a lot more. To really not take certain situations for granted. But yeah, it definitely has changed the way I move while working at home. Definitely. As an actress, what has been your favorite project to work on? Oh, that's hard. As an actress, one of my favorite projects would have to be the movie I wrapped, which was my first leading role. It's called The Last Conception. And for me, it really shaped me as an actor. It was like a bootcamp. And I learned so much, and I had to be on point, because we shot pretty fast. But that was one of my most beneficial experiences. Now, the most fun was probably my guest star on Twenties. That was hilarious. The actors are phenomenal. I learned so much there as well. But I can take away a lot of things from all of my projects.
As a public figure, you've done an amazing job standing for body positivity and confidence for women. What advice do you carry into your daily life? When it comes to body positivity, I think it's really important to stress that it's okay if you are not consistently positive about your body image. I'm not. I struggle with it. Sometimes I feel great, and sometimes I don't. And I think it's really important to talk about that. No woman every day is waking up like, "Yes. Oh my God, I feel amazing." You know, whatever quotes I put up, I feel it's not true. So, let's start with that. But I do feel it's important to show the evolution of a body image. My weight has gone from super low, and then I've been really curvy. And then I show how consistent I am with working out. But yeah, when it comes to body positivity, please just don't know like, every day doesn't feel like your best day. And that's okay. We love your style! Who inspires your everyday looks? Oh, that's hard. So, my all-time favorite style icon is Bianca Jagger. She's classic. She's edgy. She, to me, in my opinion, was before her time. I just love her and everything she wore back in the day. But currently, I love what Miley Cyrus is wearing. Always Rihanna. Let me see. I'm a Kate Moss fan. I mean, god, Bella Hadid. I love the way she dresses. I mean, the list could go on.
Are you working on any exciting projects you can share with us? I can't share it. I booked a new show, and we start filming in January. I also booked another show, and it comes out in October, but I can't talk about it. You guys will hear about it in probably like a week. So, sorry. What three words would you use to describe yourself? Driven, consistent, and giving. What is something that you enjoy doing in your spare time?? In my spare time, I love to read. I love to just watch the trashiest TV, I'm not going to lie. Like I just love to sit there and not think about things, because my mind is like constantly going. So, if I put something on, and it doesn't take much thinking, I'm fully relaxed. I love to spend time with my friends, and my husband, and just chill. I don't take those things for granted. So, and I love to be with my cats, honestly. Speaking of your husband, you and Miguel knew each other since the age of 18, and have been married for nearly three years now. Our Modeliste readers want to know, how is it? It feels the same, but it doesn't feel the same. Marriage was like, okay, we've solidified it. We're good. But, I felt that way before. It's amazing. You know? And then, again, no couple is perfect. Some days are fabulous, and other days we're annoyed with each other. It is what it is. What is your favorite Miguel song? I actually don't have a favorite Miguel song. That's hard. A lot of his songs obviously have a deeper meaning, and I connect with them differently. But I can't pick just one. What would you like to say to your fans? I would like to say, thank you, seriously. All these years, all of your support. I try to answer your comments and I try to DM back, but if sometimes I don't, please don't take it personally. I appreciate every word. It's overwhelming sometimes, to be honest, but I appreciate you all more than you know. What are you most excited about, being on the next cover of Modeliste? I'm most excited about everyone seeing how well our team did today. I mean, everybody killed it. Everybody was on point. Stylist, hair, makeup, photographer. I mean, we did the damn thing, so, stay tuned.

20 Questions with Cara Jourdan Hello gorgeous, Tell us a little bit about yourself. Hi! My name is Cara Jourdan. I am from Vancouver, Canada, and have been working as an influencer for almost ten years now! I have a Bachelor's Degree in Women's Studies, and have worked as an Editor and as a Senior Buyer for a high end retail store. During my time as a buyer I began my blog (back before Instagram even existed!) and slowly grew my audience over time. I have now been blogging/doing social media for 7 years fulltime. I love to travel, swim, adventure, spend time with friends and family and read in the sunshine. How would you define yourself in three words? Adventurous, caring and fun. In what ways have you been incorporating self - care into your daily routine? Self-care is very important to me. I love exercising and make sure to workout at the gym or go for a run or a hike almost everyday. I also make sure I have down time to read or listen to music or to watch a good movie so that I have all of the energy to work hard. What's the most fulfilling part of your job? Meeting people! I love connecting with people around the world, be it on social media or at events or in the airport...it is such a wonderful perk of this job. Can you tell us about an exciting time in your career? One of my most magical moments was attending the Cannes Film Festival with L'Oreal Paris. I also got to live out one of my dreams attending the Victoria Secret Fashion Show in New York. Additionally, I won the Harper's Bazaar Fabulous at Every Age event and was featured in the magazine which was certainly a highlight! What would you title this current chapter in your life? “Growth�. I am constantly trying to think outside the box and grow my career by offering new creative direction for my audience. I love pushing myself and figuring out how to make things work during harder times, for example during Covid19. 66 OCTOBER 2020 | MODELISTE
How do you educate yourself on ways of maintaining healthy skin? I have just recently come out of a really tough time for my skin. I started experiencing cystic acne two years ago, and it plagued me for a year and a half. I changed my diet, got tested for allergies, got facials yet nothing seemed to help! I came to believe it was hormonal and stress related, and was able to work with an amazing team at Vanity Lab in Vancouver, BC, Canada, who helped me with a new skin routine (retinol is magic!). It has healed thankfully. It was very difficult, especially in this line of work, to have such terrible acne breakouts so I want everyone to know, if you are suffering with anything, it doesn't last forever and no one notices as much as you do yourself. Also, always remember Instagram isn't always reality! Many people are going through things that they may not share on social media. What do you love most about Pixi Beauty? I love that it was created by a woman and that it focuses on enhancing natural beauty. What are your top 3 favorite Pixi Beauty products? Love all things glow! The On the Glow Stick is my must-have! What does the word empowerment mean to you? Such a big question~ I believe everyone has the right to feel empowered, which means having access to knowledge and a platform to learn, share and teach one another. We should feel empowered and empower others around us. In what ways do you use your platform for the greater good? My social media outlet is my workplace, so I do focus on sharing creative and beautiful imagery that I hope inspires others to go outside, go for that swim, feel the breeze in your hair, watch that sunset, and enjoy the little things in life. I do keep my personal life slightly separate from what I share on social outlets, and in my own time I do spend time, money and energy on causes including the SPCA and volunteering at the Women's Shelter in Vancouver's Downtown Eastside & Union Gospel Mission. I have shared about causes that I am very passionate about, for example I advocate feminism and shared a post on International Women's Day about what it means to me, and of course I shared during the BLM movement. During these tough times, what has kept you motivated? I want to bring joy to everyone's day during these times, and hopefully my images offer
a moment of peace and enjoyment to those who see them, giving them a break from the stress of today's climate. How do you remain fit, active, and healthy with stay-at-home orders intact? I was lucky enough in Vancouver that we were encouraged to go outside during our quarantine, so I got out for a lot of walks & runs. I also took up at-home workouts. There are so many amazing workout videos online that you can tune into and get your sweat on! I also had a stationary bike from my cycling class, Ride Cycle Club in Vancouver, in my house during the strict quarantine time. As a creative in quarantine, how have you found inspiration and ways to create? It was challenging as I am primarily a travel blogger, however, it opened my eyes to look at my own backyard in Vancouver and British Columbia and highlight my own country! I also adapted to do more at home shots, incorporating flowers or different angles to keep it interesting. What and/or who has had the most influence on your growth and why? I actually have been blogging (yes, blogging...I started before Instagram existed!) since 2012, so I have had a slow and steady growth over that time. I have built a great community of influencer friends and we all support one another's work. I was fortunate to have the opportunity to do TV segments and be featured in magazines including Harper's Bazaar, Fashion & Flare magazines, so I think every little bit of exposure helped me along the way.
How can you as an individual actively take part in fighting a system of oppression and standing in solidarity with your peers of color to amplify their voices? I graduated with a Women's Studies Degree from The University of Victoria, and was fortunate during my studies to learn a lot about oppression, sexism & racism, reading works by Bell Hooks & Gloria Steinem & Simone de Beauvoir, for example, which gave me a great base to go back to when the BLM Movement began. I believe that as individuals we need to do our part each and everyday, because it is about making it our lifestyle, not just a movement for a moment. It is our job to educate ourselves, ask questions, have discussions and always be open to listening & learning. I wouldn't even think of not standing up against racism when/if I were to see it in person. This is just something you do! I would make a stand for any injustice that I came across...if someone needed help or if I were to see something happening that was clearly not right, I would say something or do something. That is our jobs as citizens of the world! Be kind, have compassion & empathy, be open and thoughtful...Do the best that you can do! In what ways has your life changed due to current events? Life has changed dramatically! Family visits have been canceled, friends have had family members get sick, reading the news about what people are going through physically & mentally has been an eye opener. Of course my work has changed - as a travel blogger obviously I have not been traveling, and of course many brands & companies have been suffering, so I noticed a decline in job opportunities. But I see that people are suffering so greatly, being separated from their families, losing their jobs or companies, getting sick or seeing loved ones sick & dying...I feel very lucky in this time that I have come out with what I have, thus far. My heart just goes out to all those who are really suffering. What advice do you have for someone who aspires to create a career like your own? Be ready to work hard & believe in yourself! Being self employed is not easy...it is a roller coaster full of great, fulfilling times, as well as lonely, stressful & scary times. But it is all worth it to be able to live your dream & be able to be creative and know that the harder you work, the more you can achieve. I love my job, but I do know that a lot of people see blogging/instagram as an "easy" job- I assure you, it isn't! Those who are successful working full time never take days off, always have work on their mind & are willing to take risks in order to succeed. If that sounds like you, go for it!

Besides fashion and beauty, one of my biggest passions in life is dance. I have been dancing since I was 12 years old, and I even received my BA in Dance. My childhood dream was to become a dancer and a model, and I find so much joy knowing that I continue to focus on that dream. I’m also a huge foodie! I love trying and exploring new food. How would you define yourself in three words? Creative, Passionate, Empathetic In what ways have you been incorporating self - care into your daily routine? I try my best to dance or work out on a daily basis. I find that it helps me relax both physically and mentally. I also try to fulfill one of my hobbies every single day, whether that’s reading a book, trying a new skincare product, or watching my favorite Netflix series. What's the most fulfilling part of your job? The most fulfilling part of my job is creating a positive impact or influence on people’s lives. I keep every note, message, or dm where people have expressed their gratitude towards me, and I’ll forever cherish them. Can you tell us about an exciting time in your career? The most exciting time in my career would have to be when Calvin Klein reposted me on their social media. It might sound silly, but the fact that I got to model for their line and have my photo posted on their social media was a huge highlight of my life. I grew up wishing I could afford buying clothes from Calvin Klein. I even grew up dreaming of modeling for the brand, and now I wish I can go back in time and tell my nine-year-old self that her dreams are going to come true. What would you title this current chapter in your life? I would title it ‘Progress’. How have you found ways to educate yourself and those around you? I continue to stay informed with current events and news by reading credible articles and actively sharing the information to those around me. The best way of educating myself is to have thoughtful conversations with friends, colleagues, and family. What do you think are ways that others can help society and our surrounding communities? Loyal, passionate and easy going. In what ways have you been incorporating self - care into your daily routine? Since lockdown, my mental health has been my priority and main concern. It is such an uncertain time and taking care of this side is extremely important. I try to meditate every morning and every night right before bed time. I am also trying to stick to my skin care routine and drink plenty of water and have more fruit and veggies (which I never do). What's the most fulfilling part of your job? Without a doubt, the people I meet and the places I get to know and all the adventures I live in them. Can you tell us about an exciting time in your career? There has been plenty‌ and many of them have been with my Modeliste family in some of the best places I have ever visited. But also, a campaign I filmed with my son for one of my favourite clothing brands last year in Portugal. It was dreamy to do such a cool thing with him! What would you title this current chapter in your life? "Getting to know myself". How do you educate yourself on ways of maintaining healthy skin? I try to do my morning and night skin care routine and use face mist along the day as much as I need to. I also try to drink plenty of water and maintain a healthy diet which is a must for a healthy skin. Also, I use high SPF every day even when I don't go out or I am exposed to the sun to keep my face from pollution and other external factors.

I drink a lot of green and chamomile tea, I eat a lot of fruits and veggies daily, I drink a ton of water, I stretch every morning to get my blood pumping, and I take bubble baths at night. If I am organizing a photo shoot, I love seeing everything work out and the vibe I had visualized come to life! Can you tell us about an exciting time in your career? The most exciting part of my career is when I created my swimwear line, Tosh Swimwear in 2017 - four years after I created my blog. I love seeing my followers wearing the designs I've created. PASSIONATE. CREATIVE. INSPIRING. We Are Mrembo Africa‌ Women working together, discovering their strength, empowered to learn skills, to create as artisans, to produce, earn, and provide for themselves and their families. The thrum of treadle sewing machines fills the air in the tarp-tented Mrembo Africa outdoor workshop. There is a harmony in the movements and sound, the comradery of soft exchanges in Swahili and occasional quiet laughter. Absorbed in their work, the women are surrounded by an array of colorful fabrics, an oasis in a compound bordered by typical Nairobi slums. A small group of women are gathered at a table where they are being instructed in laying and cutting from a pattern. They are a diverse representation of Nairobi’s poor in age and origins. Having just met at their orientation they are shy but eager. Their eyes stray to watch the women busy at their machines, the community they will join. Millicent had spoken to them at their orientation. Her words to the group are evidence of her transformation since her arrival at Mrembo in 2017. Once so shy she barely spoke, she is now a voice for empowerment and a leader in the Mrembo Africa community and beyond. Her story in her own translated words:
Millicent I am proud to be part of Mrembo Africa. Joining Mrembo Africa has been an inspiration. I started working at Mrembo with basic skills in tailoring. My journey with Mrembo has been very fruitful since 2017. I started working on fashion as my earlier training not knowing I was going to develop passion in making bags. I was challenged to start making bags and I positively made the initiative. I make different bags that meet the needs of different customers. I go on different online applications and research new looks and upcoming designs. From there I draw inspiration to create our bag designs which sell well. We have the autonomy to think creatively and design items of choice, when not making specific items for a particular client. More customers are appreciating our bags as they become popular at Mrembo Africa; I also train other team members to master the skill. My marketing skills are now good. I can communicate well with clients while selling at different events. I enjoy my work and hope to have my own business in the future. The money I earn enables me to support my parents and to educate my siblings.

Wanjiru My passion for tailoring started when I was a young girl so my dad enrolled me in a tailoring school I successfully completed and started my own business. The business was doing well but had to relocate when I got married. I later joined Mrembo Africa when business went down. I had a learning curve and to improve on my skills I have had to learn a lot as per the clients’ needs and interests. I am getting deeper into design and would love to learn more. I make women’s and children's outfits. I also empower other women within Mrembo who are on training to acquire skills in tailoring. I have also learned to go online and acquire more knowledge to improve my skills. I appreciate the new skills I have learned such as making bags, bomber jackets, hoodies and others. Betty I am employed in a leather making company full time but also work with Mrembo Africa part time. I work at Mrembo Africa in the evenings and on weekends. I am skilled in making hotel and restaurant accessories i.e bill folders, room folders, workshop folders etc. In Mrembo Africa I learned how to make purses and leather and Ankara bags. It was so difficult for me to achieve making one bag. I went through vigorous training and I thank Doreen and Mama who trained me to make bags. During this time of corona virus the leather company closed. It is through bag making and selling that I made rent and food for my children. I am now interested in training in fashion and design. I am undergoing training and I trust this will be a wonderful skill to have. I feel empowered!

As a refugee woman I would have felt very hopeless if I didn’t have any skill. I was trained in tie and dye in a refugee support organization which supported me when I arrived in Kenya from Rwanda. I left my home as a young girl and got faced with different challenges that pulled my confidence down, but I managed to still hold my head high when I received support from the refugee organization and also saw other young girls who had similar challenges or worse. On exit I was to start my own business but being in a foreign country it has not been easy. I got married to a Kenyan and have been blessed with two daughters. Having worked with Mama Alice before, I was enrolled at Mrembo Africa where I have learned other skills that enable me to earn and sustain my family. Covid-19 has complicated life, loss of jobs but I appreciate that we have continued working, making masks and other items that have sustained us. Mrembo Africa has inspired me to keep going!
When I started working at Mrembo Africa I completely had no idea of how to handle a sewing machine nor cut an outfit. I started making bags and made the first backpacks. I felt very inspired to continue. I now make different items including cushion covers, pillow covers, table runners, place mats, duvet covers, jewelry and storage baskets. I am very good at sales and marketing. These are skills acquired through Mrembo Africa. I trained in tie and dye and now I train others. The income I earn at Mrembo Africa enables me to care for my children and my grandchildren.
