The New Season is upon us and Modeliste is as committed as ever to featuring the best of fashion and beauty, while honoring women who wear it with personality and confidence. In this issue we bring you all of the hottest runway trends from lustrous metallics, textures such as shearling and feathers to the sexiest palettes of vibrant plums and pinks. And speaking of pink, Rachel Hilbert, the stunning face of Victoria's Secret PINK, is gracing the Cover of our September issue. Rachel not only embodies a fresh, radiant, youthful spirit, but her talent and trailblazing work ethic has made her one of the most admired as well and sought after models in the industry. Our travels in this issue have taken us off the beaten path in Kenya, exploring the sun-drenched beaches of Zanzibar and the breathtaking, picturesque Westin Dawn Beach Resort & Spa, St. Maarten which graciously hosted our latest Mode Around the Globe Style Influencer Getaway. We are also honored to bring you the designs from our latest collaboration with Mrembo Africa and Songa Designs in our Labels We Love, with both organizations working in Kenya and Rwanda with a true passion and goal of empowering women and providing opportunity to them, their families and communities through their crafts. It is equally as humbling as it is inspiring. Take this time to breathe in the crispness of Autumn and enjoy the changing colors of the leaves, burnt orange sunsets, and immerse yourself in all the season as to offer. Welcome to the issue.

With love and gratitude,

Amy

MODEL DIARIES

RACHEL HILBERT Being a model means being ready for anything, and Rachel Hilbert is always game. Since her emergence on the scene she has become a fixture within the industry and is now the official spokesmodel for Victoria's Secret’s line, PINK. With her youthful energy, radiant glow and charming demeanor, Rachel has gained a high-profile series of admirers. Modeliste sat down with Fashion's new It girl in New York City after her Cover shoot at the Chatwal Hotel, where Rachel opened up about life in the spotlight, how she became the face of PINK and what’s next on her bucket list.

14

15

MODEL DIARIES Where did you grow up? Originally I'm from Rochester, New York, upstate. How old were you when you first started modeling? What was your very first modeling job? I started modeling when I was 16, and was discovered from an open call. I used to always dance my whole entire life, and people from the dance competitions would be like, go down to New York City and try out for modeling. So, I did that, and it happened to be really amazing. Tell us about getting the role of being the face of PINK- when did you start working with Victoria's Secret and did you see it progressing to where you are now? When I turned about 18 years old, Victoria's Secret PINK really started looking at me, and it was probably one of the best things that's ever happened in my career. I did an in-house, kind of photo shoot for them and one of the main people from Victoria's Secret PINK was like, let's try shooting Rachel, normal shooting. Then I just kept shooting with them, and got signed to be the face of PINK. That really started my whole entire career and was probably the craziest thing. Describe a typical day off. Well, my typical day off, you can find me in literally my Yoga pants and a sweatshirt because I go to the gym and then I run around doing errands. It’s a pretty normal day off like anyone else. What are your top 3 beauty must-haves? Water, always water, sleep. Everyone can afford this. Water and sleep is the biggest thing. Also, a good moisturizer. Those three things are no-brainers What’s the most adventurous thing you’ve done? I've yet to do it, but I want to skydive. That's on my bucket list. I need to skydive in the coolest place. I think I'm gonna get addicted to it and become one of those skydive junkies but, whatever it'd be really fun. Favorite part of today’s shoot? We had a really great team and a great photographer. It was really fun, we shot in this beautiful hotel room in New York City and I got to bring my puppy, which was really cool. There were some really different, cool shots and a lot of playing around. 16

MODE WITH MEANING: MREMBO AFRICA

mremboafrica.com

We Are Mrembo Africa… Women working together discovering their strength, empowered to learn skills, to create as artisans, to produce, earn, and provide for themselves and their families. Song Mrembo Africa translates to “Beautiful Woman Africa”, the beauty of bonds between women across age, tribal, ethnic, and national identities recognizing their common goals and needs, building economic independence as artisans, finding strength, sense of purpose and hope in the communities of poverty of Nairobi. Native born Kenyans and refugees from war-torn regions of East Africa, the women of Mrembo Africa strive together under difficult circumstances to believe in themselves and build new lives. This is the vision of partners and friends, Alice Eshuchi, Doreen Aura Munroe, and Lynne Chizzick, as we create a new family of creators and contributors, women building for the future. Empowered by the social and emotional support of the growing Mrembo Africa team of trainers, enlisting counselors and social workers for personal and group sessions, the women are discovering strength in numbers and shared experience. As they earn, our goal is for sustainability, with a future shared micro savings and loan project and training in personal finance, production and sales. Rising from backgrounds of poverty, extreme vulnerability and gender based violence, the women of Mrembo Africa are choosing to define themselves as survivors, healing as they begin new lives. They are moving forward creating new pathways to economically sustain their families and provide for their children’s education. Learning skills and setting goals that are attainable and sustainable, the women are striving to make a difference for themselves and their communities. Together they are building hope, confidence, and a dream for the future.

Creative Fashions with a Sense of Style, Purpose and Commitment: The diverse traditional skills manifested in the crafts of the women of Mrembo Africa are being channeled into marketable trades, from jewelry making and beadwork, tie and dye, design, sewing and tailoring. Vibrant African motifs uniquely enhance modern designs and create new and exciting additions to the world of fashion and decor. Nairobi’s local markets have provided the women with emerging confidence in marketing and sales. Forming partnerships to extend and expand our production, no project is too big or small for our team to tackle. Success comes in small increments, but together we are bound by hope and resolve, a belief in our capacity to learn and grow. Together we are determined to build a new tomorrow for the women and their children through Mrembo Africa.

Each purchase you make is a step forward for the women of Mrembo Africa and the unifying hope to continue to build connections and sustainability, to expand and extend the mission of Mrembo Africa through outreach to women within the communities of Nairobi’s communities of poverty and beyond. We at Mrembo Africa are thrilled and proud to partner in our mission and design with our Rwandan sisters through Songa Design. Together we are able to create fashion and decor and provide income and pride in accomplishment for women in Africa. outreach to women within the communities of Nairobi’s communities of poverty and beyond. Songa Designs International Collaborates with Mrembo Africa to Launch SociallyConscious Sarong Collection Artisan groups from Kenya and Rwanda work together to empower women across the globe Songa Designs International, a socially conscious accessories and lifestyle brand, announced today its collaboration with Mrembo Africa to promote its 2017 summer collection of sarongs that empower underprivileged women around the world. Hand-dyed by skilled Kenyan artisans over the course of two hours, each detailed sarong showcases the beauty of artisan groups from different backgrounds combining their talents. Each sarong comes with a beautifully woven sisal leaf sarong buckle woven by Songa artisans and a cow horn buckle by Mrembo. The limited edition artisan sarongs will be available for purchase through August 31, 2017. Both Songa Designs and Mrembo Africa are rooted in uplifting women, empowering African artisans with socio-economical support and entrepreneur skills to reach economic independence and improve their living standards-- through a diverse range of handmade accessories. The newest accessory, the Unity Sarong, is made with soft viscose cotton and skillfully hand-dyed by Mrembo artisans using eco-friendly dyes in a soak pit. The sarong is then washed thoroughly with soap and hot water, hung to dry and tasseled by hand. The sarongs blend together the unique dying technique from Kenya with the vibrant and free-spirited feel of the Songa Designs collection, building on a style which Songa calls Urban Tribal. The collaboration will likely provide further opportunities to artisan communities in Africa

"It's important to me that we set an example among the various artisan groups in Africa," said Sarah Sternberg, founder of Songa Designs. "I am constantly inspired by the talent throughout the country and see the success of artisans, whether in Kenya or Rwanda, as a success for us all. This collaboration with Mrembo is another way to expand our mission to bring equality and economic independence to women in underprivileged communities, this time in Kenya as well!"

Songa Designs works with more than 175 women and encourages the artisans to negotiate their wages and confidently express their creativity. For example, Jacqueline, one of the artisans, is the designer behind the fall 2016 handbag collection's top seller, the Jacqueline Handbag. A newer organization, Mrembo works with 16 women and one man with a disability who supervises and trains the artisans on tailoring, design and stitching. "We at Mrembo Africa are thrilled and proud to partner in our shared mission with our Rwandan sisters in Songa Designs," explains Alice Eshuchi, Mrembo Africa founder. " This is an exciting opportunity to see diverse traditional skills manifested in the crafts of the women of Africa being channeled into new markets. Vibrant African motifs uniquely enhance modern designs and create new and exciting additions to the world of fashion.

49

After working with companies like Songa Designs and Mrembo, many artisans are able to use their new income to purchase things for the home like running water or electricity to support their families. Songa, meaning "the path forward" in Swahili—strives to support Rwandan women on their journey toward financial liberation and is excited to extend this outreach to the women of Kenya as well.

About Songa Designs International:

Songa Designs International is a lifestyle and accessories brand that works to empower women and make a positive impact around the world. Working with under-resourced women of Rwanda in East Africa, Songa provides more than 150 artisans with employment opportunities that allow them to achieve economic independence simply by using skills acquired through everyday life. Trained by generations of local cultural tradition, the skilled artisans of Songa craft stylish, high-quality accessories and home décor items to bolster one's personal and interior style. Each piece in the Songa line is inspired by nature and made of natural materials such as banana leaf fiber, sisal plant, pewter, re-purposed cow horn, and paper beads that otherwise would end up in landfills. Defined as "the path forward" in Swahili, Songa is synonymous with the journey toward economic empowerment for women in developing countries. For more information www.songadesigns.com. About Mrembo Africa:

We Are Mrembo Africa... Women working together discovering their strength, empowered to learn skills, to create as artisans, to produce, earn, and provide for themselves and their families. Mrembo Africa translates to “Beautiful Woman Africa”, explains co-founder, Alice Eshuchi. “We are an initiative in Nairobi, Kenya, founded to empower women without regard to borders of origin, to build hope and 50

economic sustainability. As we strengthen their skills in sewing and tailoring to create fashion and decor, they now have the ability to earn to provide food, shelter, and education for their families.” Our story begins with our previous work with refugee girls which inspired an awareness of how vocational skills and the ability to earn can empower women and effect change in families and communities of poverty. Together the diverse women of Mrembo Africa are building hope, confidence, and a dream for the future. This is the vision of founding partners Alice Eshuchi, Doreen Aura Munroe, and Lynne Chizzick, our commitment as we create a community of artisans and designers. This is an exciting opportunity to see diverse traditional skills manifested in the crafts of the women of Africa being channeled into new markets.

First I prepped her hair using Oribe Imperial Blowout cream to give her hair shine and control against the humidity and blowdried her hair smooth using a boars head brush, my favorite is the Ibiza round brush.

Once the hair is dry I add texture at the roots using R+COs Death Valley dry shampoo and spritzed the rest of her strands with L’Oréal’s Nelnet medium hold hairspray.

3

Spray the hair with a lightweight movable hairspray such as Oribe superfine hairspray and removed the from her hair, using the same boars head brush to smooth out her curls into waves.

5

For extra hold and finishing touch I used a matte pomade from Ouai to shape her hair into the finished product.

I ran a boars head brush through her hair to smooth out the hairspray and using 1 1/2 “ curling iron I curled her hair under and pinning the curls in place until cool.
