through the eyes ashion knows no boundaries. You cannot fetter any trend or innovation, which is bound to happen in the magnificent world of fashion. There was a time when fashion shows were restricted to only Western and European countries but nowadays, our beloved Delhi, Mumbai and now Kolkata have also become the most happening place for fashion shows, besides London, Tokyo, Paris and Milan.

With the recently concluded fashion weeks, Wills Lifestyle India Fashion Week (WIFW) and Delhi Fashion Week (DFW) in New Delhi; Lakme Fashion Week (LFW) in Mumbai, and Kolkata Fashion Week (KFW) in Kolkata, a large number of international class designers launched their autumn-winter ‘09 collection for the fashion aficionados. During the last WIFW, the hot spot was the malfunction on the ramp. The last registered bounce-off was by Belgian model Debbie during Rajesh Pratap Singh’s show.

On the heels of this mysterious reveal-lation comes the whiplashing of one designer on another. What with Rahul Jain and Gunjan Arora (of WIFW) accusing their friends debutante designers Sandeep & Gaurav (of DFW) and Abdul Halder (of WIFW) accusing Vikram Phadnis (of LFW) for being copycats. I am sure the cat out there is having lots of fun and is wondering, where the originals came from. I hope the pandora’s box remains rested in the black hole. Oh well! Boys will be boys and cats will be cats so let us leave it at that. In any case, copies of designer clothing are sold all across counters of many fashionable stores. Personally, I admire you designers for spreading your positive aura of fashion down to the common man, even if it has been copied from you. The WIFW A/W ‘09 event was as usual marvellous with Sunil Sethi excelling as the true ‘Father of fashion’. The collections of all participating designers were unique but the collections of Ranna Gill, Rahul & Gunjan, Manish Arora, JJ Valaya, Abdul Halder, Prashant Verma, Raghavendra Rathore and Rocky S. need
a special mention. Manish Arora, the maestro, yet again thrilled the audience with his ‘Jungle’ theme collection, as he did last year with his ‘Circus’. Similarly, Raghavendra Rathore’s variety of design, Ranna Gill’s sparkling colours, JJ Valaya’s 'Kingdom of Love', Abdul Halder’s innovative ready-to-wear women collection, Prashant Verma’s brilliant presentation of art and fashion and Rocky S’s modern fashion statement in black, steel and metallic silver mesmerised the fashionistas. In DFW A/W ‘09, I enjoyed the appealing collections of designers Rohit Bal, Tarun Tahiliani and Rahul M. Rohit’s grand finale collection, where he presented Victorian gowns and ruffled dresses under the theme, Raat, were a treat to watch. ‘Gudda’ surely knows that he is the best but loves to prove it every time. This time, the venue was ‘par excellence’ and was at his newly opened restaurant, ‘Cibo’ at Hotel Janpath. The MnT family is surging ahead. Sunil Sethi, President, FDCI and our honourable adviser was appointed the chairman of the Advisory Council of Fashion and Design Promotion Council (FDPC), which is an initiative taken by Indian government to support the Indian fashion industry. Besides this, a little known fact is that he has also been appointed as the Vice Chairman of the Handloom Export Promotion Council of India under the Ministry of Textiles.
Kudos also to my dear adviser, Gurbir S. Grewal for his recently launched movie, Coffee House with stars Ashutosh Rana, Saakshi Tanwar, Paintal, Harsh Chhaya and Vrajesh Hirjee. The movie represents the youth and the unemployed’s resentment towards the system. There is a flair blend of emotions, comedy and hard-hitting questions that leaves the audience thinking for quite some time. Surely, a mind-blowing concept and I am sure you guys would have loved it. Yuri, another of our honoured advisers, besides acting in Kites with Hrithik Roshan, is also busy shooting for many films including, Veer with Salman Khan and Lamha with Sanjay Dutt and Bipasha Basu. Our September ‘08 cover girl Sanjana Singh is also ready to rock the silver screen with her item number for the movie, Jalwa Yeh Zindagi with Irrfan Khan. Not only this, our top model of February ’09, Nikhil has acted in a song for singer Agam Kumar Nigam’s music album, Woh Bewafa. The magazine has been receiving rave reviews from the young aspiring male and female models; therefore I have decided to upload the entire pictures in their portfolios on our website www.modelsntrends.com. Now they can easily access their pictures from anywhere, anytime without carrying them in a CD.

Interesting facts She is a blind follower of astrology and names her fashion bags after different astrology signs.
She is also dubbed as the ‘Queen of Draping’.
She modelled for fashion illustrators during her school days and wanted to become an illustrator herself. Since she was not very good at drawing, so she started working as an intern for the sportswear designer, Anne Klein.
She designed her first collection and staged her first show in high school. She started selling clothing at the age of 14.
Karan is always on a diet schedule about which, she cracks jokes happily and shares tips.
While designing her clothes, she claims not to have the top models in her mind, but women like herself. Similarly, for her youthful, funkier DKNY line, she looked at her daughter and for men’s wear designs; she used her husband and business partner as model.

Summers
Splash the with designer colours!
Spring traditionally evokes a sense of freshness and a new beginning. Sprouting shoots and blossoming flowers inspire designers to break out of the winter doldrums. Therefore, it is the time to play with flamboyant fashion colours. Bringing you some of the colours that will reign this spring/summer ‘09.
Charlotte Ronson INSPIRATION The late 1980s and early 1990s—visions of feminine frills and sexy bustiers shaped our use of playful and washed colors. MUST HAVES Ours is a must-have “look”: A Blush Pink corset top paired with a Black stonewash biker vest and Black laser-cut skirt.
Laura Poretzky INSPIRATION Summers spent in the South of France during the late 1950s—ladies lounging in bright swimsuits provide a wonderful contrast against the tranquil Blues of the ocean and sky. MUST HAVES A Chambray Blue dress

Christian Francis Roth Kimora Lee Simmons INSPIRATION This season, the lovely desert of Africa inspired me a great deal. Everything from the massive sand dunes to the exotic snakes played a role in my spring 2009 collection. MUST HAVES A Coral silk chiffon, strapless cocktail dress
INSPIRATION New York City graffiti of the late 1970s and early 1980s— the spray-paint brights are offset by the Steely Grays of subway cars. I was also influenced by Massimo Vignelli’s 1972 New York City subway map. The retro brights of the individual subway lines create a mood of pop nostalgia. MUST HAVES A graffiti appliqué dress in mixed spray-paint brights of Quarry, Blue Jewel, Flame and Mimosa

olours evolve from season to season, and spring ’09 is no exception. Fall ’08 saw blue and purple colours rise to the forefront of fashion. This spring, bright fashion colours return to rejuvenate you. According to Pantone fashion colour report, this season’s favourite Palace Blue takes a steadfast, classic, spring navy-like tone and makes it sparkle. Pair it with any colour in the report and it will offer many intriguing spring combinations. Taking purple in a lighter direction, Lavender presents a softer, more summer friendly hue, extending the mystical aspects of purple. As yellow continues to make its mark on the world of fashion, tangy Super Lemon brings a fun, optimistic outlook to the palette. Its luminosity is determined to evoke a smile and attract the roving consumer’s eye. Taking a cue from its lemony neighbour, friendly and approachable Salmon Rose also conveys an optimistic outlook. The subtlest of oranges, Salmon Rose is flattering to most complexions and brings on the summer glow. Wichy Hassan

hink sensual and seductive Fuchsia Red for clothing, as well as lipstick and nail polish selections, this spring. With its blue undertones, this cool red is a real showstopper, adding a sense of elegance to the palette. Stabilising neutrals provide practicality in a changing economic landscape. hree greens, each with their own distinct personality, round out the colour palette for spring ‘09, perpetuating the idea of freshness and renewal. Vibrant Green, the quintessential spring hue, brings a true verdancy to the palette in a time of revitalization. Dark Citron, a citrus-inspired green, is calmer and more serious than most, offering an element of sophistication to the mix. Reflective Lucite Green, a clean, clear subtle hue, adds a slight shimmer. So freshen up your mood and greet the spring with these bubbly colours.
Alvin Valley INSPIRATION Marie Antoinette’s wardrobe while spending time at her second home, Petit Trianon, and her pastoral lifestyle in the country MUST HAVES There are truly two musthave Alvin Valley pants for spring: A self-belt wide-leg pant in a cool Gray Mélange, and the new cargo trouser in a Sandy Taupe.
Wenlan Chia INSPIRATION The free spirit of Jean Seberg—there are idealistic school girl and bohemian details that exist both in her and in my spring line. Jean’s grace, beauty and whimsical nature set the tone for this collection. The blend of colors, textures, vintage-inspired prints and tailored silhouettes give my collection a classic, romantic quality—reminiscent of Jean Seberg’s legacy. MUST HAVES Classic shirtdress with a quirky twist in a print
Yigal Azrouël Tracy Reese INSPIRATION The palette is both faded and saturated—like the colors have been sunkissed and weathered on a foreign, exotic land. MUST HAVES Jersey handkerchief dress in Saffron and Azrouëlian Gray
INSPIRATION Glorious nature, abstracted landscapes, Van Gogh and lush gardens MUST HAVES Washed-leather, appliqué mini in Cement

The genius of Valaya collections lies not only in their styling but also in the workmanship of each garment that he creates. Each piece that finally emerges from Valaya’s label is undoubtedly beautiful, exclusively exquisite, and a masterpiece crafted in cloth. And notwithstanding any exaggeration, if a garment could be made an heirloom, unquestionably, all of Valaya’s creations qualify to be cherished for a lifetime. The grandeur and opulence that come from Valaya’s creations, have over the years made JJ Valaya, the uncrowned king of couture in India, writes KIRAN CHOPRA.

The Couture King of India
“Fashion, I love it! Permit the energy of prêt-a-porter to hit it off with the elegance of couture and what you eventually get is what I know as diffusion!”
What makes Valaya, the man he is today...
JJ’s story is a testimony to all who believe in following one’s dreams and desires. Born in an army family, he was brought up in various cities of India along with his two elder brothers. Arguably, it all started with a love for painting in school along with an exposure to fine embroidery, thanks to his mother, who was a kid’s wear designer. His creative skills are apparent from the fact that he remained the best artist and calligraphist in school for five years at a stretch. Having done his graduation in the commerce stream from Chandigarh college, Valaya started his career as a chartered accountant. However, this was not to be, as after 18 months, he realised that those weren’t the figures he was meant to create things for! And thus, he put on his wings to fly and followed his desire of becoming a fashion designer. In 1989, he got admission in NIFT, Delhi and went on to become the first Indian student to win the ‘Prix D' Incitation’ at ‘The Young Designers International’ competition held in Paris. He also went on to win the Thapar DuPont medal, for the most innovative use of fabric and the Elyxa award at the NIFT graduation show. And if that was not enough, he came back next year to grab the first prize at the NIFT alumni competition held in Bombay. In 1992, JJ along with his brother and partner, T J Singh, launched his couture label ‘JJ Valaya’ and the rest, as they say, is history. And what does the man himself have to say to all this? “I
am a firm believer in God and destiny, everything has its time.”

This is what Jagsharanjit Singh Ahluwalia alias JJ Valaya, as he is better known, has to say about his diffusion label ‘Studio Valaya’, created by the first Indian designer, who came out with an entire label on diffusion. Realising the need for a traditional Indian outfit to be a little more comfortable and stylish, Valaya, created this quintessential diffusion line, which today is followed by almost all the new age designers. JJ Valaya, fashion mogul, the Czar of the Indian fashion industry, is India’s leading couturier and is well known for his intricate embroidery and painstaking eye for detail. Announced as the first brand ambassador of Swarovski crystal components, India, Valaya uses his well-known embroidery techniques and highlights the traditional forms of Indian craft by combining colours, texture and hand embroidery with the richness of Swarovski crystals, said to be today’s answer to the gems of the Maharajas.

In addition to these, he was the first Indian couturier to enter Dubai more than 10 years ago. He gave further evidence to the special bond he shares with the region by opening an exclusive flagship store there called JJ Valaya ‘LIFE’ at a premium location, where he not only showcases his fine designs in women’s wear and men’s wear but has also forayed into accessories, soft furnishings and signature tapestries.

According to JJ, couture in India was to be interpreted as the trousseau for the great Indian wedding. The ‘JJ Valaya Couture Line’ has the pride of place in the Indian fashion industry. Owning one of his limited edition pieces gives the owner a certain prestige and he is automatically elevated to a unique different class. Some styles become collector items, treasured by the owners and are found nowhere else in the world. JJ draws inspiration from the mythologies of ancient yore, a time long forgotten, not just limited to India alone, but also from Africa, China, Egypt and the Middle East. He revels in the mixture of royalty along with the intricate embroidery that’s painstakingly woven in each of his creations. It is rightly said that the objective is not just to create a mere garment, but something that can be passed on from generation to generation. Whereas his couture line continues to define the trends for the season, (some which might seem outrageous to be worn in public, but not without a look of awe), his diffusion line brings the same trends albeit in a watered down, cleaner and affordable look, which is lapped up by everyone. The JJ Valaya line focuses greatly on luxury, finish, texture and colours - all of which are designed to give a feel of magnificence and timelessness.

From all the major cities in India to catwalks in Hong Kong, Singapore, Bangkok, London, Manchester, Dubai, Erfurt (Germany) and New York, where he shared the ramp with leading American designer Todd Oldham in a fund raiser held at the Plaza Hotel, JJ has sprinkled the Indian spirit of fashion everywhere across the globe, including Paris. In 2002, celebrating the 10 year anniversary of the ‘House of Valaya’, he had two grand shows in Delhi and Mumbai. He now operates with a workforce of over three hundred employees; from the three persons
Despite the fame and success that he has received along the way, one wonders why his name has not been associated with the mainstream Bollywood titles as is of many of his contemporaries. “No movies,” he says. He is firm that as a brand his label can not be associated with anything small. So, unless and until he is convinced that the project would suit the brands interest, there will be no jumping into the filmi bandwagon just for the heck of it. The only notable exception to this

One could go on and on about the work and life of JJ ; the different labels like ‘Studio Valaya’, ‘Valaya Home’ and ‘Valaya Quantum’ (that he retails under) but one thing is for sure that JJ has not only created a niche for himself but has also raised the bar for others to follow. He is not a man to rest on his past laurels; constantly on the look out for new innovations, he is already on the search for what could be the next turning point in the Indian fashion industry. Especially since in his opinion, Indian fashion is only beginning to take its first steps on the global map; despite the Indian influence being evident in foreign designers’ latest collections; with Armani doing churidar pants, the jacket sarees and Hermes and Jean Paul Gaultier’s heavy inclination toward the Indian colours. Without a doubt, JJ Valaya definitely seems bent upon leading the charge to where it truly belongs.

was when he lent costumes for a wedding sequence in Subhash Ghai’s, Yaadein and for a cameo role in Madhur Bhandarkar’s Page 3. His opinion on stars walking the ramp, another popular trend of late, is unwavering. He believes that, it is the clothes that are the main attraction, and when you are putting together six to eight months of hard work into a thirty minute show, having a star is distracting and would take the shine away from the real star.

f you ever saw me as a child in Kerala, you would not contradict twice about my fate to get married at ‘23’ (the ideal and ripe age to pass on a daughter) with a Syrian marthomite christian settled in the US of A. I grew up in a boarding school with just girls and loved the madness that came with it. It took more than a decade before I finally got to open my treasure box filed with letters and cards from a life gone by. There was no mention of heartaches, just plain and simple uncomplicated love from adolescent hormone overdrive. On hindsight, living without too many references made my life a lot more exciting.
There was a time, when I was in college and money was scarce; trying to make a chapatti that could fly and trying to eat it with raw onion and chilli was surely an experience. You can not fool a
Malayali stomach into digesting that. The village belle meal was not my cup of coffee. It did not make me run away from the reality my life was. It is not like I could run back to mummy. My amma was as much a drifter as one would expect from a hippie, minus the chillums. While in college I was quite sure, at the same time drifting like a true mallu that I wanted to try my hand at modelling. My first portfolio shoot (which I recently uncovered) is the scariest thing that I have ever seen. The photographer had asked for my dark face to be painted many shades lighter (he said that I would look great and that it was good for my future prospectus‌!!!). Blue jeans with a white frilly top and my Doc Marten boots in the pictures was like adding salt to injury. Good Lord ! I looked like a south Indian geisha in bad clothes with a buck toothed smile (a smile that was saved for my mother when all explanation failed to amuse her). I have just seen the photo shoot I had done with Hans Fuerer (the man who shot the Pirelli calendars) in GQ magazine and
I can not stop smiling while comparing the two shoots. My beginning in modelling
was against all odds. I was an ugly duckling from all conventional angles. It did not take me long to figure out what part of my face worked to my advantage, because there were not many. The only thing that I had in abundance was self confidence. I did not kill myself trying
to achieve a goal nor did I have any limitations that stopped me from doing as I pleased. I got a lot of background flak, when I had my lip pierced. The grapevine juiced that it was the end of my career. Instead, my work
doubled and it inspired many a wild children to do the deed too. When my once long
and lustrous hair was turning into a stringy straggly mess after a decade of product abuse, I chopped it off and sported my new short do. Well, that was a kick start for all
the ladies, who had trouble imagining the nohair look for themselves. The only trouble that my short hair has raised is that I get sent to men’s frisking area at airports. I have nothing new planned for myself (I never plan)... What I am trying to say is that there are no right or wrong choice in life. Live as you please because what if tomorrow never comes?

How did modelling happen to you?
My journey towards modelling started, when I participated in ‘Miss Agra’ contest in 1999 and won the crown.
What is the best thing that you like about modelling?
You get lots of compliments and get a chance to travel a lot, I think this is the best part of modelling.
What is the one thing that you feel like changing about this glamour industry?
I do not like the politics and back biting, which happens in the industry.
Who shot your first portfolio? Do you think that it made a difference to your career?
Photographer Suvo Das clicked my first portfolio and it made a lot of difference because I faced the camera for the first time and I learnt a lot from that day on.
What according to you is the most important thing to keep in mind while getting your portfolio clicked?
The most important thing is to avoid over doing. Your body language and of course, your expressions are very important.
And what is the worst thing?
Odd working hours, over expectations and a lot of hypocrisy.
What is the hottest thing about you?
My goldie locks and my hundred dollars smile.
The craziest thing you have ever done:
Riding a motorbike in the middle of the sea despite water phobia.
Who do you think is the ultimate fashion diva and why?
Bollywood actress Priyanka Chopra is the ultimate fashion diva for me as she can carry anything graciously.
Do you think a parallel career option is necessary for models?
Yes, of course it is. Modelling is a short lived career and everyone should think about a long-term plan.

What are your views on the sexual harassment in this industry?
My funda is clear. People who are sexually harassed are fools because nobody can force you to do so.
A fashion tip that you think really works:
Basic blue denim with a white T-shirt goes well on everyone.
Who has been your mentor in this industry? I, myself.
Which has been the most interesting campaign that you have done till date?
My BSNL campaign, which got me lots of recognition.
What is your advice to the aspiring models?
They should be focused, should learn how to struggle and should remember that there is no short cut to success.
Who do you derive inspiration from?
From my dad, since he knows how to be cool and calm and yet enthusiastic. Nothing great can be achieved without enthusiasm.
Any interesting pick-up line that has come your way? Hi babes !
What attracts you to a man?
His eyes, personality and his bank balance‌! Just kidding.
Style mantra for dressing:
Anything that is comfortable and in vogue.
What irks you? Bad body odour. Who was your childhood crush? Saif Ali Khan. A childhood incident, which you never forget:
When my group and I dared to tear one of our classmate’s moral science book and was called by our principal. This kind of behaviour means a lot in the convent faculty and we were almost thrown out of the class.
Will you opt for a Bollywood movie, if given a chance?
Not as Barkha Kaul but as DJ Barkha. I would rather love to do music for a Bollywood movie.

hether it is winning a beauty pageant or a zillion rupees, the first step towards getting anything in life is to really want it. Really wanting it does not mean just pining for it. I have heard a lot of people say that they would give a right arm to get this or an arm and a leg to get that. However, when it comes to working towards it, they would not make enough effort. Most of the times, this lack of effort comes from the fact that deep inside, you are not convinced that you are capable of realising your dreams. Your subconscious is repeatedly telling you that it is not possible. It is one thing to say that you wish you could be in Aishwarya Rai’s shoes, but it is something else to say, and more importantly believe that you could actually be there! This belief in yourself is something that will always take you places, the kind of places you would love to be in. It is an important step in the entire process. Just like any other, winning a beauty pageant is also a process. It is a procedure, which can be achieved by those, who follow the laid down steps. The first step is to believe, without a shadow of doubt, that you can do it. Knowingly or unknowingly, successful athletes do it, performers do it and achievers do it. There are hardly any successful people, who do not actually believe that they can do whatever they set out to achieve. You may surprise yourself and the others sometimes, but these kind of success stories are rare and hard to come by. When you start believing in yourself, your thinking and actions undergo a certain change. You start disciplining yourself. You start finding time to do things, which will help you to achieve what you want. You automatically reduce
Just like any other, winning a beauty pageant is also a process.
wasted hours in a day because you are obsessed by your goal. You start being more punctual, you start becoming more and more thorough in whatever you do. You learn more and without seeming to, slowly but surely, you walk towards your destination.
That is the ‘one’ thing, which stands out when you talk to any successful person. A few years ago, supermodel Cindy Crawford was in India. During my chat with her, the one thing which stood out was her single minded focus, her sincerity towards what she was doing, and her attention to even the minutest detail. She attributed all that to the fact that if she believed in it, she could do anything. According to her, the only way to do it was to do it to the best of her capability. This is the one single habit that drove Cindy Crawford to super stardom.
So, if you want to win a big pageant some day, start now. First, assess your positive and negative points. Take the help of sincere friends, who would give you an honest critique of your personality and your looks. Take stock of your strengths and weaknesses. Now sit down and make a fair
assessment of what you have to do to enhance the strengths and overcome the weaknesses, and then, honestly ask yourself the question: “How badly do I want it?” However, be warned about one thing. Self belief does not mean false assurances to yourself. What it means is awareness of your
drawbacks and certain game plan to rid yourself of those shortcomings. These days many young people want to become famous and they have many of the ingredients, which are needed to become stars. They have a great goal; they have the required face and a great body, the intelligence and the charm. They also take the first bold steps towards achieving the goal. Unfortunately, they have very little self-belief. They cannot see themselves in the role, which they want to achieve. Their beliefs are like a force hidden deep inside them, holding then back, stunting their progress, preventing them from taking the actions necessary to succeed. Really, at no stage do they believe that they are going to be successful. Do you have a picture of success in your mind and a feeling that this is meant to be? Take a moment to think back over some of the things, which you have tried and failed to achieve over the last few years. As you do, ask yourself the question. When you started doing that thing, did you really believe you would succeed? You will realise that in all these cases you did not. To move towards the crown, take time out now; before you start any other preparation for a big pageant. See, if you believe that you can win; actually believe that you will succeed. Without achieving this first step, jumping to the next step is not worth the effort.

Hair Loss Some of the reasons for hair loss are dandruff, oily scalp, stress, thyroid imbalance, illness, nutritional deficiencies, damage to hair caused by repeated dyeing, colouring, perming, straightening. Hair loss after pregnancy or during menopause is also common. There can also be a condition of hair loss known as alopecia areata.
Dandruff and oily scalp

Models Trends MAY 2009
Dandruff is one of the most common causes of hair loss. If hair loss is due to dandruff and oily scalp, the hair should be washed with a mild herbal shampoo, rinsing very well with water. After shampoo, add the juice of a lemon to half a mug of water and use it as a last rinse. Hot oil therapy is very useful for dandruff. Heat pure coconut oil or sesame seed (til) oil, or olive oil and apply the oil on the scalp with cotton wool, rubbing gently to dislodge the flakes. Then dip a towel in hot water, squeeze out the water and wrap the hot towel around the head, like a turban. Keep it on for five minutes. Repeat the hot towel wrap three or four times. This helps the hair and scalp to absorb the oil better. Repeat this three to four times and leave the oil overnight. Next morning, apply the juice of a lemon on the scalp and wash your hair after half an hour. Weekly henna treatments will help. Add four teaspoons each of lemon juice and coffee, two raw eggs, one teaspoon methi seed powder and enough tea water to the henna powder, mixing it into a thick paste. Tea water can be made by boiling used tea leaves again in enough water, cooling and straining the liquid. Apply the henna on the hair and wash off after an hour. If you do not wish to use egg, add more tea water.
Shahnaz Husain
Fenugreek (methi) seeds
Grind one tablespoon of methi seeds coarsely and soak in two cups of cool water. Leave it overnight. Strain and use the water as a last rinse.
Neem leaves
Hair damage
Hair damage, caused by repeated colouring and other chemical treatments, can lead to hair loss. In such cases, the hair should be treated very gently. Avoid tying the hair tightly with rubber bands. Avoid using hair dryers and brushes. Use a wide-toothed comb. The hot towel wrap would help after hot oil treatments. Mix together one egg, two tablespoons castor oil, the juice of a lemon and one teaspoon glycerin. These ingredients should be mixed well. You can use an egg beater if you like. Massage this well on the scalp and hair. Wear a plastic shower cap and wash your hair after half an hour. Rinse well with water to remove all residue, so that they do not clog the pores.
Add two handfuls of neem leaves to four cups of hot water. Let it stand overnight. Next morning, strain the liquid and use it to rinse the hair. It relieves itching and keeps the scalp healthy and free from infections. It is also useful for dandruff. Make a paste of the soaked neem leaves and apply it on the scalp and rinse off with water after half an hour.
Oil treatments
Avoid vigorous massage of the scalp, if there is hair loss. Apply warm oil on the hair and scalp. Use your finger tips to move on the scalp in small rotary movements. This helps to stimulate the scalp and improve blood circulation to the follicles and scalp surface.
Nutritional deficiencies
The hair is actually fed by the nutrients in the blood stream. That is why diet is a very important aspect of hair care. Nutritional deficiencies can be a common cause of hair loss. Have a small bowl of sprouts daily and include fresh fruits, salads, leafy green vegetables, soyabean, curd and paneer in your diet. Ask your doctor to prescribe vitamin and mineral supplements.

After the success of two Bollywood movies, highlighting homosexuality, people are now more tolerant towards this preference.

hen Hollywood movie, Brokeback Mountain was released, it received many accolades for its storyline from the audience and the film critics, which was based on the complex romantic and sexual relationship between two men. Years after, Karan Johar’s super hit movie, Dostana has copiously encashed on this blooming ‘gay culture’, where both the protagonists of the movie pretend to be lovers to rent an apartment. Although the film reveals the hilarious side of the culture yet fact of the matter is that people are gradually consenting to this till now an undercover institution. subject in his movie. He had already presented the sub plot of homosexual connection between Shahrukh and Saif in Kal Ho Na Ho movie, to tickle the audience endlessly. Later on, this chemistry of the two was also seen in the ‘Filmfare Movie Awards 2008’ceremony and some people actually started believing that they both are really ‘gays’. Another critics-acclaimed movie, Fashion, which is directed by Madhur Bhandarkar, and includes a sub-plot of a homosexual fashion designer and his fellow man, which is presumably inspired by the real life incident of fashion designer, Wendell Rodericks and his French gay partner, Jerome. Although Madhur did not reveal any name but he did accentuate that his characters were inspired by real life people. He has already depicted the gay concept earlier in his movie, Page3. He concedes that the ‘gay community’ is on the surge but he doe snot like to make

Despite the fact that homosexuality is still viewed as a hideous crime in conservative India, the habitats of tinsel town are candidly nurturing this ‘culture’. fun of a culture. According to Madhur, “Gay characters are often used as props and gimmicks in our films, but we cannot reduce any community of people to tokens and emblems. We have to treat them as real." Similarly actor Samir Soni voices, “We, as a country and in the entertainment business, should stop looking at homosexuality as a peculiarity. I was a model, so I know a lot of gays. My character in Fashion as a gay is not the issue. Some directors make the mistake of making a character's attribute as his identity badge.” As the conventional Indian cinema is changing into experimental cinema, the gay community is also getting acceptance in both cinema and society. Now the depiction of a gay character is far away from Anupam Kher’s character in director Rahul Rawail's Mast Kalander. He is not merely a ‘lampoon’ or an ‘abnormal creature’ but a human being. “Why not we highlight the sensitive side of gays? A gay man is extremely caring and emotional and I do not think many Hindi movies have brought out this aspect,” argues fashion designer Rohit Bal. “When you make a movie that dwells on homosexuality, you have a huge responsibility, of working towards removing the stigma as opposed to victimising them. But being gay is not something to joke about and ironically, there are so many closet gays in the industry itself,” adds Bal.

The wind of change is blowing and actor Bobby Darling, who has felt pangs of being a gay in real life, confirms this. “Things are looking better for me. Now, my father talks to me. I am getting better roles. I have my own apartment in Oshiwara, and I have recently bought a car. I feel secure as I am having some good assignments but the initial days were really very humiliating for me.” Interestingly, Bobby is the holder of Guinness Book of Records for being the first gay to have done the maximum gay roles in films and serials in Bollywood. But actor Rahul Bose still believes that homosexuality is a long way from gaining acceptability in Bollywood. “We hardly have any films on the theme. Nor do we respect the gay community's space in the way we show them on screen." Samir Soni reveals further, “I have often discussed the question of sexual orientation with my gay friends and how it affects their personality and their day-to-day dealings with people. What fascinates me is the closeted existence of a gay, who does not or can not come out in the open. The torment of keeping the secret is just so gut-wrenching." Homosexuality is not a sin. Psychiatrists believe that homosexuality is neither a mental illness nor it is any sort of moral depravity. It is just the way a few of us wish to express our love and sexuality. Understanding of one’s outlook is vital to weed out misconception. After the legalisation of live-in relationships in Maharashtra, it is the time now to focus on homosexuality, without any prejudgment. No doubt, the transforming Indian cinema can lend a crucial hand to change the mindset of people towards this sensitive issue. Famous psychotherapist, Dr. Brian Weiss has revealed in one of his best-selling books, ‘Many Lives, Many Masters’ that he has learnt about the past lives of many people using regression techniques. According to him, it is interesting to know that a husband can be a sister or a
“
”
wife can be a brother in any of the previous births. So it really is the soul, which identifies with another soul in a relationship. The gender dose not really matter as the soul has been in the form of a male or female in past births. So your gay partner might have actually been your female wedded partner in last birth. How interesting! If all this is true then ‘gayhood’ is the most natural way for a couple to be. Isn’t it time that we stop being judgemental about a relationship – any relationship between two consenting adults; be it gays, be it lesbians, be it any kind of an affair. ‘To be or not to be’ is a right that you can not bestow on anybody but on yourself. So be it.
I do not like the way homosexuals are portrayed in our Bollywood movies. Such kind of issues should be handled sensitively rather than making a gay or a homosexual a laughing stock. Homosexuality is a natural phenomenon. Homosexuals are also human beings. They have a right to live in this world just like ordinary people. People, who think that gay culture is a fashion or they can create a fashion statement by posing as a gay; are indeed ridiculous. Sylvie, hair stylist and makeup expert.

Khalid Siddiqui
How did you get into modelling?
I was in college, when I did my first campaign for a tea company named, Tea City. I used to take part in college for talent hunt and won it, which built up my confidence. A friend of mine noticed me in this ad and after that, I have never looked back.
A remarkable performance in Joggers Park and a much noticeable one in Ghajini, what are your views on these two roles? Which is the next Bollywood project that you are working on?
I have enjoyed playing both characters. Both films have completely different storylines and are really close to me. It is always fun to try out something new and since I enjoy my work, I tremendously enjoyed playing these two characters. As far as my next project is concerned, there are a few projects in the pipeline but it is too early to talk about them.
What encouraged you to be a part of the glamour industry?

at the end of the day, you are performing your own stunts.
Which one is easier - walking a ramp, doing ads or acting in a movie?
Which has been the most interesting campaign that you have done so far?
I think walking on a ramp is the most difficult part, since it has no retakes; whereas acting or working in an ad has many retakes. It depends on your interest. Once you get a hang of it, things flow easily, just like opening the door and getting on the other side. Till then, it is a learning process.

Tattoo tales The old custom of living in colours has broadened its aspect and of late, brushing the body with colours has become a form of joy and a trend.
B
ody painting is the recent craze. Right from celebrities to common people, art has hogged the fashion era in such a way that human skin has become a unique canvas of sketches and designs. The temporary tattoos created using henna have been replaced by chemical and dye based tattoos. The quest of the modern generation to stand out in the voguish world has created a virtual frenzy and provided a suitable environment for dye related companies to sprout. Human body has been maintained as a colourful canvas in the social ball since 3000B.C. There was a time, when people explored body art as a form of tribal culture to protect themselves against evil-spirits and wild animals. Tattoos were also used as a sign of right, rank, devotion and religion. Many people took it as a ritual practise, commonly noticed during the marriage ceremony, when both the bride and groom are embalmed with natural mehndi. This trend is still alive in the cultural catalogue, especially in Asian countries. 74

A large black cross on her left hip and the words ‘know your rights’ just below her neck are the most popular ones. Of late, desi Bollywood too has gone freaky with tattoo art. Magic of couples
When camera rolls, a number of Bollywood stars form an imaginative world of love and romance and often tie knots. But sometimes, these awesome reel life couples do get involved intimately and grab the limelight beyond their splendid performance. ‘Love is blind’ and you can easily find many examples to prove this maxim from our very own Bollywood industry. Here you will find many love angles, which though written for the reel world yet performed well into the real life. So many celebrity jodis, who have mesmerised the audience through their marvellous on-screen love performance, could not resist tasting the forbidden fruit of love in their real lives too.
Raj Kapoor –Nargis
The married Raj Kapoor, who was smitten by the gorgeous Nargis, could not save himself and their love blossomed copiously during the making of movies, such as Barsat, Awaara, Shree 420, and Chori Chori. He had a long romantic relationship with her and people always praised their on-screen love chemistry. But after the release of Mother India in late 50’s, Sunil Dutt won the charismatic lady’s heart by saving her life in a fire accident on the sets of Mother India.
Shahrukh-Kajol
King Khan and once the reigning queen Kajol have played some wonder roles in the late 90’s with movies like Baazigar, Karan Arjun, Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge, Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham made the movies remarkable in the history of Indian cinema. But after Kajol’s marriage with hubby Ajay Devgan, their on screen charisma came to a halt as Ajay felt insecure and eventually blocked the way of this successful combo. Yet we get glimpses of the old spark in Shahrukh’s movies, Om Shanti Om, Rab ne Bana Di Jodi, Kal Ho Na Ho, Kabhi Alvida na Kehna.

Amitabh-Rekha
The much talked-about romantic on-screen couples of the Bollywood, Amitabh and Rekha are still the heart throbbing jodis for the audience. Their real-life relationship was widely reported in the media. With the release of movie Silsila, this relationship came to an end. The film was the most scandalous of their films together, as it was based on their real-life relationship. The rumours continued for a long time until Rekha married Mukesh Aggarwal, whereas Amitabh managed the situation and could maintain his marriage with Jaya.
Dharmendra-Hema Malini
Popularly known as the rustic lovers, ‘Veeru’ and ‘Basanti’, made a hit with movies such as Sholay, Charas, Aas Paas, Jugnu, Seeta Aur Geeta and The Burning Train. Later on, their screen magic transformed into a real life love story; breaking all convention and rejecting marriage proposal from renowned actors like Jeetendra and Sanjeev Kumar, the Bollywood diva at last settled down with already married, Dharam Paaji.
Akshay-Katrina
Anil Kapoor-Madhuri
Yet another pair of starlets, Anil-Madhuri began to spark on the screen by late 80’s. Together they performed remarkably in films such as Ram Lakhan, Parinda, Beta and Kishan Kanhaiya. In fact Anil was also designated as a secret lover of the brown eyed Sridevi but nothing came of this relationship. While Sridevi married Anils’ elder brother, Bonney Kapoor, Madhuri married Sriram Madhav Nene, an Indian doctor residing in USA
Well, the silsila of romance goes on and this time, the talk of the town is the most sizzling on-screen couple, Akshay and Katrina. The sexy duo started to sparkle from Humko Dewane Kar Diya to Namastay London, Welcome and now in the blockbuster Singh is Kinng. Although their movies with their real life lovers didn’t do well yet they have set a record-breaking history together through their on-screen romance in their movies. But unlike others, the cool dude Akshay has denied any romantic links with Katrina and vice-a-versa.
