Models Trends SEPTEMBER 2009

Fashion, fashion everywhere! And how many more to come? I think that there is too much fashion coming out of our ears. After the ‘Kolkata Fashion Week’ and ‘Bangalore Fashion Week’, being held recently, it was the time for the ‘Hyderabad Fashion Week’ to join the bandwagon this September. Oh! how many more to come? Well, am I to dream of a fashion show in every nook ‘n’ corner pan India? I think it is time to unite under one roof for the betterment of the industry. However, the organisers must enlarge the platform to include the new designers in the making or mushrooms will keep on growing. It is real heartening for the fashion frat that after much turmoil, the Fashion Design Council of India (FDCI) and Fashion & Design Promotion Council (FDPC) have decided to promote a united fashion week. Even though, the chief negotiator, Vijay K. Singh, CEO, FDPC landed himself in hot water, but still this did not hamper the unification. In any case, this hullabaloo (about a mere commercial dispute) was over hyped by the media and was uncalled for. I personally appreciate and laud Vijay’s efforts, independent of this incident. Isn’t it time that the frat hangs together? The riding is smooth for Sunil Sethi, President, FDCI, who pulled an ace yet again and has converted a totally new property ‘Men’s Fashion Week’ into a real hot one by collaborating with Van Heusen. Well, the ‘Father of fashion’ strikes again! This month, hot, gorgeous and glamorous Pooja Missra is on the cover. She flew especially all the way from Mumbai to be a part of ModelsnTrends. We had lots of fun trying out various attires out of Shantanu & Nikhil collections. Thanks Pooja for being my side and giving apni Dilli a peek-a-boo inside you. Sharafat Gayi Tel Lene, with Yuri, advisor ModelsnTrends, playing a major role in this movie. Another advisor, Sandeep Marwah is as usual busy in shaping up the future of young film makers. It was fun and enlightening being at his Asian Academy of Film And Television (AAFT) Institute during the ‘63rd Festival of Short Digital Films’. It was also nice to hear from his student and film director Rajesh Bajaj, who compared him to ‘Dronacharya’, the great teacher. Indeed, he has toiled through time to attain this status. Sandeep, we are proud to have you on board. To be amidst the future fashion forces, ModelsnTrends has joined hands with Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi as their ‘Glamour Partner’ for its upcoming popular annual event ‘Rendezvous 09’, where a large number of colleges participate. Representatives of ModelsnTrends will judge their major dancing and fashion events. Let’s see how many of these join the professional world of glamour and fashion. See you there, take care and with all these festivals around the corner, you guys are going to be mighty busy. Here’s wishing you a very HAPPY DIWALI!

Her good looks, panache and candour perfectly ooze out her oomph, which is accomplished by quintessence collection of Shantanu & Nikhil. Steve’s styling and Meenakshi’s make-up have added more colours and charm to her persona. Catch more facets of her personality in a candid interview on page 38.

Cavalli lives with his wife (also his business partner and exMiss Universe), Eva Duringer and their children in a villa on the hills surrounding Florence. Needless to say, his flamboyant Italian lifestyle includes a great deal of glitz and glamour throughout the year. Nonetheless, he grabs any opportunity that he gets to spend time with his family tout de suite, especially during summer on his 41 metres yacht. This truly scorpion fashionista does not travel anywhere without his digital camera, a dilettante and a nature lover on vacation ready to capture anything interesting that catches his attention and then transforming it into a new motif. A genius at producing wild and sexy leather designs, flower and jungle motifs; we are now aware of the source of inspiration behind his well acclaimed signature prints, which lies in his periodic voyages to the wilderness.

Roberto’s ability to envisage, his idiosyncratic style, attention to details and vibrant patterns have won his brand many fans from the elite populace across the globe. Catherine Zeta Jones, J Lo, David and Victoria Beckham are some amongst his many regular clients.

Not only do Hollywood and other international celebrities flaunt his outfits at high class events, but our very own Bollywood actresses do also now indulge in high fashion couture and seem to have been smitten by Cavalli’s creations too. Isha Koppikar, the first Bollywood actress to have bagged the judge’s hat at Miss Universe 2008 cast her desi spell and charmed the crowd with her beautiful smile; a funky hairdo inspired from the sixties and a very attractive red dress designed by none other than the master himself. Sources report that Cavalli, who also designed the gorgeous white gown for Aishwarya Rai for a red carpet event at the Cannes Film Festival, had called up Isha himself to model his outfit at the beauty pageant. “A wonderful girl...her personality and energy are part of her style. Her body is beautiful, very feminine. I love to dress women like her.”

For Cavalli, fashion is not merely a thing for sale. It is a vital part of his routine life. According to him, “I love clothes and fashion more than music.” His designs embody sophistication, confidence, and worldliness. His originality, his continuing efforts to reinvent fashion, his respectability and soaring popularity represent him as a living legend, who will inspire many upcoming designers and fashionistas of fashion and glamour world in the imminent days.

This was his second trip to India. The big Bolly-Holly collaboration, Kambakht Ishq is another excellent movie of this year, where trendsetter Kareena Kapoor is spotted wearing Cavalli’s attire.

The Shoe Stoppers Shoes have become a classy way to express an eloquent style statement in today’s fashion scenario. A pair of fine leather shoes with exquisite designs is the ‘in thing’ to add sophistication and attitude to the fashion conscious men’s wardrobe.

28

n

Models Trends SEPTEMBER 2009

hey say, you can judge a man by the shoes he is wearing and it indeed is true. A shoe is as significant a style statement as any other fashion accessory. Rather, more important than most of them and the league of today’s fashionable youth, truly follow this maxim. This genre of ‘fashion conscious’ men believe that footwear, especially a pair of good leather shoes can provide a charismatic change in their style. And thus, rises the market for stylish shoes. Every brand and every designer, who caters to this industry segment, knows that new trends are the key to their survival. “Indian market has noticed an increasing trend in the demand of fashion footwear in men's segment since 2003. It has witnessed the launch of more than 10 international brands in this category during this period. As the premium quality leather footwear has found an encouraging acceptance in the market, consequently, this segment is continuously growing, in spite of all economic nightmares. This trend also projects that fashion consciousness is on the growing path amongst Indian males. I am sure that a blend of style with comfort can hit the jackpot,” says Arun Vajpayee, Director, marketing

& sales, East Face Foot Wears Pvt. Ltd., a company that brought the brand ‘Homme’ in India. The advent of fashion magazines, rising shadow of Bollywood and other such influences have created an undying desire for fashionable shoes. “Since men are informed and aware of new style trends, therefore, the demand of men's fashion footwear is growing year by year,” says Sahil Malik, Managing Director, Da Milano, which is a luxury brand with a distinct Italian sensibility and has a strong brand recognition in Europe, North America, Asia and Australia. There is absolutely no doubt that an exclusively designed outfit can prove to be a complete disaster without a match of good fashionable shoes. As Carl Virk, Director, Carlton London, says, “Wrong shoes can really play a dampener not only in one’s personal life but also in the professional life.” It is apparent that men’s fascination has grown a lot in apparels, hairstyles, bags and shoes segment. As a result, new trends and demands have gained impetus. While the demand of low to medium-priced men's shoes is declining, the interest of men in premium shoes is growing. This is confirmed by the increasing demand of men and their buying behaviour. The rising demand for new varieties of men's shoes is a testimony to the metrosexual male’s improved taste in not just living but also dressing up for everyday work, which, a few years back was rather uncalled for! Mr. Vajpayee suggests some vital tips for an elegant style through these stylish shoes. “With suits, the best footwear is a formal shoe. These can be worn in different shades in accordance with the colour of your choice. Some common colours in fashion for formal shoes are black, brown, maroon and olive green. While deciding the attire on the special day, shoes should always be matched with suits.”

Shuja Mirza, Vice President-Marketing, Red Tape

Today people are much more aware and exposed to global fashion trends. They want smart and comfy footwear for themselves. Red Tape has always had a vision to provide lifestyle fashion solutions for the young generation and our team is constantly striving to give Indian consumers the best in styles and comfort.

To match the aspirations, the shoes should have durability, long-lasting materials, leather-only finish as well as attractive looks. Apart from Mr. Vajpayee’s ‘Homme’ shoes, other brands are also set to create ripples in the premium category. “Our men's footwear is imported from Spain and is made with the finest leathers. We lay a lot of emphasis on the design element and ensure that our customers here get the latest international fashion and it is our endeavour to ensure that latest styles, colours and designs are introduced in the Indian market, in the premium category,” says Mr. Malik firmly. Carlton London Men has come up with ‘Red Leopard’ range in India also. The brand has brought Europe’s latest fashionable footwear and accessories to the Indian market scene by opening multiple retails stores across the country. “Our brand always brings London high street fashion to its stores and something unique and edgy for fashionable men. This season, we have the premium class exclusive brand, ‘Red Leopard’ with us,” reveals Mr. Virk. The classy segment of the brand has hi-class fashion range for men, which has brought top quality shoemaking crafts from Europe. The fashion conscious Indian man is now habitual in wearing different pair of shoes, every time he changes his outfit, and this need can only be fulfilled by a large variety and styles of shoes. Therefore, more domestic and international brands are ready to storm the market with their various styles and designs to be worn on different occasions. So, it is no more a matter of comfort but a matter of style as well.

There is no doubt that shoes make a man fashionable and a trendy pair of shoes is the most important attire in a man’s wardrobe. If you want to enhance your fashion quotient then you should better have good pairs of shoes. If you are not sure about your choice then a great pair of Prada will work out.

Shantanu and Nikhil

Glamour and grandeur unlimited Rising from the Indian terrain, this designer duo is a class apart. They are rapidly leaving their indelible imprint on the fashion scenario worldwide. Whether it is a celebrity, a sports legend, a socialite or a common man – clothes designed by them are devoured by one and all. The grandeur of their craftsmanship lies in their subtle use of Indian culture with contemporary styling and a colour palette that reveals India in its purest form. These talented designer brothers are none other than Shantanu and Nikhil Mehra, who are the favourite World Class Indian Designers of Chief Editor, Anup Bhandari, this month. 32

“ The label Their journey into the scintillating world of fashion and glamour commenced after the launch of their label, ‘Shantanu & Nikhil’. According to Nikhil, “We always dreamt of launching a fashion label. Shantanu pursued MBA in finance from Ohio State University, USA, while I pursued a course in fashion designing from FIDM, Los Angeles. In this way, we pooled our entrepreneurial and creative skills in the business of fashion.” The year 1999 marks the birth of their label, ‘Shantanu & Nikhil’. Under this label, they showcased their first collection, which was an Indian menswear couture line. After that, there was no looking back as their signature women’s collections, both diffusion and couture soon followed. The designer duo stepped onto the field of high fashion with their debut diffusion line at the India Fashion Week in 2001. The brand’s foray in 2003 to reach out to the masses with a chic high-street western line depicts the combination of a fine commercial sensibility and a genuine feel for fashion. Merging the essence and emotions of Indian culture with modern western sensibility; their label presents unique subtext of delicate details, simple harmonies and rich textural formats. “Our forte lies in the rich attention to detail like pleats, frills, ruching, delicate thread work and our most important USP is the silhouette,” explains Nikhil.

Shantanu and Nikhil belong to a community of young and talented designers, who we can be proud of. Their approach is impressive in designs, silhouettes and fabrics. I have walked on the ramp twice for the designer duo and it was really amazing to work with them. They are growing by leaps and bounds and their delectable Indowestern collections cater to the tastes and requirements of today’s youth.

Inspired and in turn exhilarating, they create for the strong, the beautiful, the avant-garde and the well-travelled sophisticates. Their electric colours, rich, sensuous fabrics and silhouettes compliment the body, to make it ubiquitous in the fashionable world. Their design aesthetics is a blend of elegance and sophistication. While creating a collection, they always keep a distinguished status about the wearer in their mind. “The ‘Shantanu & Nikhil’ label woman is a young well-travelled sophisticate, who is confident and independent,” says Shantanu. “Similarly, while designing dresses for celebrities, we keep in mind the celebrity’s personality, body types and what colour would suit his or her skin tone,” adds Nikhil. Romance and innocence are two vital human emotions enveloping their designs and collections. “Design is a sensibility that has to be delicately played with, so as to create a balance between the eyes and the mind. It is a feeling, a sensation that comes from deep within. Style to us is the body and it conveys to you the expression that your mind has created to complete the body,” confides Shantanu and Nikhil. This evolution of their style has been shown in both trade shows, couture collections across the country and has been appreciated by Indian and International buyers. Talking about their sources of inspiration, Nikhil says that they are inspired by the idea of taking vintage India to modern India. “Our inspiration could be a current issue, a style icon or a place. In the past, we have designed a collection inspired by British actress and humanitarian, Audrey Hepburn. Our last collection bloomed from the landscapes of Ladakh.” The duo, time and again synergise trendy collections through sheer team work. “We have always thought of ourselves as entrepreneurs first and then fashion designers. This philosophy is what prompted us to cross synergise our art and commerce backgrounds. Shantanu does the number crunching and takes care of the financial side, whereas I look into the creative aspects,” reveals Nikhil. Apart from their own label and creativity, they also appreciate other fashion brands. Nikhil’s favourite fashion brand is Lanvin while Shantanu likes Giorgio Armani. According to them, it has become easier for even the middle class to afford designer wear as more and more designers are coming up with prêt labels. Thus, fashion is now not restricted to any particular category. 34

Their popularity With over 25 solo shows to their credit, Shantanu and Nikhil continue to mesmerise their clients with magical designer wear. They have designed for many celebrities in India and abroad. Their unique designs have enticed many Bollywood stars and famous sport personalities. They are among the first to venture into the business of redesigning an entire look for the Indian superstar, Amitabh Bachchan, for the acclaimed game show, ‘Kaun Banega Crorepati 2’. The 70’s younger and sporty look of Amitabh Bachchan received rave reviews from the fashionistas. “The new look with wide collars, patches and pockets matched the programme ideology, which was a lot sportier and to top it all, Mr. Bachchan liked it instantly,” says Nikhil. They have also entered the private almirahs of other Bollywood stars like Shah Rukh Khan, Hrithik Roshan, Sushmita Sen, Bipasha Basu, Preity Zinta, Sonam Kapoor, Deepika Padukone, Dia Mirza, Neha Dhupia, Katrina Kaif, Priyanka Chopra, Shilpa Shetty, Saif Ali Khan and Manoj Bajpai. Not only these, but also leading sport personalities like Zaheer Khan, Irfan Pathan,

Glen McGrath, Stephen Fleming, Leander Peas and Sania Mirza have channelled that style in their personalities via the designers’ creativity. Recently, the designer brothers have designed an intricately embroidered three-piece ensemble for tennis sensation Sania Mirza for her engagement. According to the duo designers, Sania Mirza, Victoria Beckham, Gweneth Paltrow, Katrina Kaif, Preity Zinta and Dia Mirza are the best dressed women. As the fashion industry evolves, so does their creativity. Not only in India but also in the international fashion world, the designer duo have notably created their aura. They are in demand by young, trendy generation of men and women. Even leading fashion retailers are roping them for designing new fashion collections for their fashion loving consumers. “So far our journey as fashion designers has been great in the fashion world. At present, we have two stores in Delhi and one in Mumbai. We definitely will be looking at opening more stores in other major metros in the near future,” says Shantanu cheerfully.

Shantanu is a very good friend of mine. He is a superb human being and a brilliant designer. I love their menswear collection a lot. Their complete command on using Swarovski and textures on men jackets and achkans is unparalleled. Each new collection by them brings freshness, elegance and sophisticated designs, which is a great compliment in itself.

Pooja Misrra Her big beautiful eyes, cute broad smile and an innocent face catches your attention. Model, VJ, anchor and actress Pooja Misrra is making a mark through her sensual limited edition calendar, which is receiving rave reviews for her aweinspiring looks. This bold and beautiful damsel is once again ready to become the talk of town. The bubbly girl reveals more on her personal front…

Your limited edition calendar has garnered applause from fans and critics alike? What went into making the calendar?

It was quite a spontaneous idea to launch my own limited edition calendar. I had done a shoot for Italian designers, Collezioni Moda and Xcess and the images turned out to be stunning, so my team brainstormed and came up with the idea that such mesmerising imagery should not only be a flash in the pan. Instead, one should have their eyes on it through out the year, so it was decided to make it into an annual calendar.

Pooja the actor or Pooja the model, which one would you like to talk about?

I am pretty happy walking as the showstopper at national and international fashion weeks. I have been the showstopper at Wills India Fashion Week for fashion designers Renu Tandon and Samant Chauhan; Lakme India Fashion Week for fashion designer Nandita Thirani; Rahul and Abhi at the Bangalore Fashion Week; Payal Singhal at the Fuel store; Giannetti brand of diamonds at Gitanjali Luxury Style Festival ‘09 and on the International level for Jean Paul Gaultier and Christian Dior. Besides this, I enjoy hosting TV shows, such as ‘Glamorous’ on Zoom TV channel, ‘Jab We Talk’ on B 4U TV channel and ‘Bid 2 Win’ on Zoom TV channel, as I actually connect with my viewers. Theatre as well as music videos is the real adrenaline rush. I guess doing more movies would be the next step as offers keep pouring in.

Tell us something more about your theatre debut? We believe you kissed a girl in it?

Well yes, I made my theatre debut with veterans like Alyque Padamsee and Gary Richardson in a comic play called 'Its Got To Be Love'. It was a real cool part of a hustler, where in I was hustling a magic love potion to this guy, who was totally frustrated in his marriage with his wife. In reality, it was a ploy between his wife and I to extort every single dime he had as the love potion was nothing but a placebo effect. Indeed yes, his wife and I ended the play and the deal with a lip lock, much to the applause of the audience! For me, it was the first time kiss with a girl but we had so much fun doing it that I would definitely not mind a repeat.

What attracts you towards a man?

The fact that he is a man and is not otherwise, jokes aside! A tall and good body, a great smile, honesty, loyalty, should know

Page 38 - 41:Layout 1

how to behave in a cultured manner around a lady and last but not the least, a spine. However, does this heady combo exist? Guys, who are reading this, feel free to tell me!

Who was your childhood crush?

It was my childhood sweetie, Vincent, back in my junior school in Manchester. He helped me chivalrously to settle in.

Tell us something about your love life. Are you dating someone?

Yes very much, it’s been a year and a half now with my half Spaniard and half American boyfriend, Rico. He does not visit India much as his family's luxury yacht business does not allow him to do so. However, it could be the primary reason for me not being in India much.

Who shot your first portfolio? Boman Irani.

What according to you is the most important thing to keep in mind while getting your portfolio clicked?

It is very important to maintain clarity on what kind of market you plan to tap by your images – print, ramp or movie. Also, the portfolio should project your personality in a comprehensive manner.

Do you think that a parallel career option is necessary for models?

As this is a fluctuating profession, a parallel career option is a great idea.

What is your advice to the aspiring models?

I would request them to be professional. Keep your eyes on the stars but your feet firmly on the ground.

Which has been the most interesting campaign done by you till date?

There have been so many from Videocon, Sansui, Mango, Frooti to Lissome Cosmetics. However, Durian furniture would definitely be the most interesting one till date, because people still remember me as the lady with the hot pair of legs on the couch.

What is your style mantra for dressing?

I like classic and elegant cuts. However, a sprinkle of eccentricity is always a welcome relief.

Who do you think is the ultimate fashion diva and why?

It is got to be Madonna. From sporting diamonds on her lashes to

Page 38 - 41:Layout 1

9/8/2009

9:37 PM

Page 40

weaving gold in her hair, she is like a chameleon, who always reinvents herself and makes rules only to break them, while putting life back into fashion. I guess that is why Louis Vuitton has decided to showcase her in its campaign.

What is the best thing, which you like about your profession?

The fact that you live your fantasies and also in millions of others.

What is the worst thing about it?

The long and erratic hours land up making you burn the candle on both the ends.

What has been the best thing that has happened to you, thanks to your profession?

I like the adulation factor of this profession. When I am abroad, people often come from malls and cineplexes to shower their love and affection, appreciate my work and emulate my style. I guess that is truly where the creative satisfaction lies.

What did you learn from your debut movie?

I learnt that no matter how many aspirant crowd fillers are swarming around or hankering for attention, one must maintain one’s laser sharp focus.

How important is it to have a godfather in the film industry?

It is more important rather to be well-circulated and networked than to depend upon a godfather because at the end of the day, it is your talent, which works well.

What is easier – acting, modelling or V-jing?

Having explored almost all the avenues from print to TV, to music videos to showstoppers, I have found that modelling is always a pleasure. On the other hand, Vjing has always been effortless. However, I must mention that while filming the show, ‘Jab We Talk’, I was extremely uncomfortable doing it. Still I pulled it off seamlessly and convincingly to prove that I am a versatile actor, who can slip under the skin of a character.

And which is the one you enjoy doing the most? Why?

No doubt, acting. I still remember playing the role of a stunted, insecure, bulimic, married Parsi, who went blue on the face denying that she was hitched in the fear by her non-existent fan club. What was even funnier that despite my statuesque, slender and tall frame, I was literally dragging myself on my knees while portraying this complexed role.

As a VJ, where do you feel the music industry in India stands on a global platform?

I unfortunately feel that the ‘Indi-pop’ scenario tends to get into a repetitive fish bowl syndrome. You will be surprised to hear that Bollywood reigns completely on foreign shores with our romantic ballads and gazhals, which I heard while dining at some eateries in Athens.

Would you like to try your hands at singing someday?

Rajat Barjatya had once complimented me on my voice and egged me on to sing, when I was in school. I dismissed the suggestion at that time. However, I probably would give it a shot, if time permits.

What is new that we can expect from Pooja?

Well, as I mentioned earlier, a song or two. Maybe my own clothing line soon enough!

I, Me, Myself Pooja as a person: Independent, career driven and a trendsetter. Haircut that you prefer: My hair is akin to who I am, a free spirit

with no holds. Therefore, straight down works best for me without the restrictions of any accessories like bands and bows. Diet that you follow: Six nutritious mini meals in a day work well for me. Exercise regime that you follow: Being a gold winning athlete, training is a mandatory part of my regime. I like weight training. However, there are days when my schedule does not allow that, so my treadmill comes handy. Besides when I get time off I like to pursue my latest passion, ‘Fencing’ (a sword fighting workout I got hooked onto in Singapore). I am currently in the process of exploring 'Cardio sensual kathinka' Skin care that you follow: Cleansing, toning and moisturising work fine for me. I am currently hooked onto Kaya Skin Clinic and Clinique but I am quite tempted to try the products from artistry soon. Hair care that you follow: I try to slip in a spa treatment for my hair almost every other weekend. With all the heat treatment to endure during shoots, this is the pampering respite. I am a fan of the Kérastase ritual, which I try to follow diligently. Your favourite colour: My favourites change by the week. However, I am told that I look pretty in pink! Your favourite fashion designer: Well, the one’s whose collection I have managed to go through. I was a showstopper for designers Nandita Thirani, Rahul and Abhi, Payal Singhal and Samant Chauhan. I am still exploring and discovering. Most preferred fashion label: Coco Chanel, Chloe, the Mark Jacobs, Stella McCartney, Agent Provocateur to name a few. Fashion tip, which you think really works: A magic wand called mascara, which creates even the dullest of eyes into an angelic flutter. Movie that you wish to do or would have done: Undeniably movies like Kill Bill and Casablanca. Favourite actor, actress or co-star: The list is long. My favourite actors range from Shahrukh Khan, Amitabh Bachchan, Shatrughan Sinha, Aamir Khan, Akshay Kumar, Salman Khan and Jackie Shroff to a dozen more. My favourite actresses are Kate Hudson, Aishwarya Rai, Priyanka Chopra, Katrina Kaif and Rekha to name a few. I would love to co-star opposite SRK and Amitabh Bachchan. Your outlook about life: It is a journey not a destination, so live and let live. However, if you do not do so, life somehow has a mysterious way of getting right back. The hottest thing about you: You tell me honestly. I am told that it is in the eyes, smile, voice, and legs.

Craziest thing you have ever done: Jumped from my chartered boat without my snorkelling gear into the emerald green waters at the coast of Phi Phi islands in Thailand. Guess did not make much difference as my skills as a swimming champ came handy. Childhood incident you will never forget: Winning the gold for high jump, long jump, tug of war, 100m, 200m and relays – all in the same year thereby being awarded as the best sports girl of the year. Your childhood dream is: To excel in whatever I do and make my parents really proud.

Channel your good and positive vibes to those you deal with. If you make people feel good about themselves, they'll be drawn to you. That is the essence of charisma.

was a Radio Jockey on FM radio in 1998. One day, I was to interview Diana Hayden on my show. Diana walked into the office in the early evening and I was introduced to her. What struck me about her was as to how she immediately captivated anyone she spoke to, and she spoke to most people in the office including the producer, the sound engineer, and everyone down to the chai-boy. You know how some people have this knack of capturing attention. No matter what they look like or how much money they have, they can walk into a room and instantly be the centre of attention. When they leave, they leave a positive impression and people tend to raise their eyebrows and say, “Nice person.” That's charisma, a sort of magnetism that inspires confidence and adoration in those you meet. Like beauty, luck, and social position, charisma can open up many avenues in your life. However, unlike these other qualities, anyone can be charismatic. It’s easy to learn how. Here is the first set of four rules to start you on your

way to having that charisma. There’s more to be said on the subject, but we will tackle that in the subsequent issues. 1. Radiate positive energy. Some people give out good vibes to those they interact with. There are others who somehow manage to bring the mood down wherever they go. A simple way to give out positive energy is to smile. A smile says, "I like you. You make me happy. I am glad to see you." You must have a good time meeting people if you expect them to have a good time meeting you. Here’s another tip on giving out positive vibes. Have you noticed how some people always seem to be talking about what went wrong, how someone treated them bad, how sick they are, how hard they work, or how their lives are so tough. Everyone has problems, but if you think that the whole world needs to know your problems and probably sympathise with you, you are not going to get very far. Instead, bring out the happiness, it spreads really fast and makes you win. If you have nothing happy or positive to

Ouch but Wow! The Art of Body Piercing Redefined...

Body-piercing, even though it has been in vogue in India since time immemorial, but still it never went beyond earlobes and nose. However, when westerners adopted this otherwise simple fashion, they carried it beyond ears and noses to unimaginable parts of the body. ModelsnTrends takes a peek into this new rage which is the latest fashion statement!

What is common between Janet Jackson, Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera, and Fiona Apple, apart from the international celebrity status that they enjoy? It is our very own desi art of ‘body piercing’ that has swept the Westerners off their feet. Body art is catching the fancy of all, and is spreading like wild fire. Today, body-piercing holds a favoured position in the list of style statements, and has given a whole new fashion dimension to this ancient body art. For the youth, carrying it with ease and élan is more of an expression, which exhibits freedom rather than merely a fashion fad. In the words of a layman, piercing is a puncture or a hole made in the skin by a needle, to add a piece of jewellery for decoration. The craze for this painful pleasure has increased immensely, and the youth have no qualms in incurring huge costs to get pierced by experts. The price usually depends on the skin area, the professional, and the jewellery inserted. Body-piercing is a rage and the Indian youth have no inhibitions in following a celebrity, to search for newer places to exhibit the jewellery of their choice! Singer Janet Jackson has stated on the Oprah Winfrey talk show that she likes the sensation that her pierced nipples give her. Other celebrities with pierced nipples include rock musicians Axl Rose and Tommy Lee, Christina Aguilera, Fiona Apple and Lenny Kravtiz. Celebrities play an integral part in shaping trends, be it fashion or music. New areas in the body are being explored, tried and tested for piercing, to give a new look to a person’s image. Piercing of earlobe and nose is extremely popular in India, but with the changing social trends here, new areas in body piercing are now being experimented

It’s not about fashion, it’s about creating your own style and look.

with. As such, piercing of eyebrows, bellybuttons, tongues, gums, chins, lips, genitals and nipples is ‘hip n happening’. Anushka Menon, fashion photographer, who has got her navel, chin, ear and nose pierced, feels that body piercing is a personal style, and has nothing to do with what the celebs do. Captain Jack Sparrow of Pirates of the Caribbean, has not been able to bypass this latest trend on the block. Even actor Akashdeep Saigal is seen sporting an eyebrow ring in one of the K serials. There is certainly no denying that ‘whether you love it or hate it’, this fad is here to stay. Style statement it is, but in the enthusiasm, one should not forget to take adequate precautions, before and after getting any part of the body pierced. Enthusiasts claim that the advantages of body-piercing far outweigh its disadvantages and, if not taken care of appropriately, it can turn into a disaster. The first and the foremost precaution is to look for hygiene in the area, where one would wish to get pierced, as also that of the person performing this operation. The most common piercing problem occurs when the skin is ripped or pulled by the jewellery that one wears, or when things like clothes or a comb is stuck in the jewellery itself. One should take utmost care while treating the pierced area. Doctors claim that whereas an unsterilised needle can infect you with HIV, piercing at a wrong area can cause swelling, irritation, pus and a burning sensation. According to Dhingra, owner of ‘Tattoowala’ at ‘The Great India Place Mall’, Noida, “Each customer is asked to strictly follow the precautions, as advised to them.” To keep the critics at peace, the scientific theory of “medical piercing”, also called “Acupuncture”, states that piercing, if done at the right place, can heal several health ailments. This, perhaps, could be another reason why individuals of all ages, young and old, are heading towards piercing parlours. Be it a style statement glorifying your inner persona or be it a fashion faux pas , you are the one to decide ‘to be or not to be’ under the eye of the needle. So, follow your instincts and do what makes you feel happy and complete!!!

I like the way it looks on me and no, there was no painfactor, as such.

Piercing Facts

Make sure that the piercer wears disposable gloves. Wash the area with an anti-bacterial soap. Keep moving the inserted jewellery 6-7 times a day, with clean hands. Do not rub the area with a towel. Never pierce your body yourself, or with the help of an inexperienced person.

I did not think earlier about modelling, but one of my friends is a model and I used to go along to her shows. One day, I got a proposal for a ramp show and my journey began in this scintillating world.

How did you prepare yourself to be a part of this glamorous industry?

Initially, I was not prepared for that but as I moved on, I imbibed the requisite qualities. However, I feel now that I was mentally very strong and my mindset was clear.

What was your parents’ reaction to your decision? Did your family support you?

Earlier, my parents were surprised at my decision. They did not want me to be a part of this profession. However, later on they started supporting me.

According to you, how is modelling as a profession? According to me, modelling is a very good profession. However, it depends on person to person, the attitude and the way one works.

Did you face any problem during your initial days?

Yes, I faced many problems in my initial days. I tried to learn this profession; the ambience was new for me here and the competition was very tough. However, it became easy for me gradually.

Do you think modelling is an easy profession? What are the essential qualities to become a good model?

There isn’t any profession, which is really easy. However, your determination, level of interest and your passion guides you through difficulties. To become a good model, you must be prepared mentally and then comes confidence and passion.

Is modelling only related to beauty or beauty and brains both? Beauty is a part of modelling but your success depends on your intelligence. Therefore, both beauty and brains are necessary in modelling.

However, had I not been a model then I would have been a housewife.

Is there any funny or sad incident that you can recall?

I still do not know whether it was funny, sad or something else. It happened with me on my first ramp show. I was very much excited and fully prepared. I had spent lots of time at rehearsals. However, on the final day, I came down with high fever but I still decided to walk the ramp.

What is your view about love and marriage?

After becoming a part of this profession, I have never thought about marriage because I love my work very much.

What are your future plans?

I have some dreams and my plans are to convert these into reality.

These days, more and more youngsters are entering into the industry to try their luck. What is the reason?

Youngsters are enticed into the modelling world because of the lure of glamour, fame and money.

Do you believe that the modelling career is forever? Had you not been a model then what else would you have been?

I think that this profession has a long life because here it is your attitude and passion that decides what you want to be. If you can fulfill the requirements of products to be advertised, then only can you be a part of this profession.

long with flawless skin and shiny hair, a strong and supple body is also a vital part of beauty. In fact, a strong and fit body is a sign of good health. A woman with long, attractive legs always gets undivided attention, especially in today’s fashion era, when people pay more attention towards the body. Whether you wear a pair of jeans, churidars, shorts or skirts, the legs draw as much attention as the face. And, if you like wearing high heels, your legs become more appealing and assume even more importance. So, here are some simple ways to beautify your legs. There is nothing like exercise to tone the muscles and make your legs look attractive. Exercise also adds grace to your posture and movement. You can try some exercises at home to tone up the legs. Squatting is a simple exercise. You can use a table or chair for support while doing the exercise. Avoid quick and jerky movements. Your movements should be slow and smooth. Breathe in as you squat and breathe out as you stand up. Stand upright with your back straight. Slowly bend the knees and lower yourself towards the floor, as far as your can go. Maintain your own comfort level. Pause for a second and come back to a standing position slowly. Do this four to five times. You can increase gradually, as you go along. Another exercise is to lie on your right side, leaning on your elbow. Place your left hand on the floor, palm downwards and in front of your chest. Lift your left leg about eight inches off the floor and hold it. Supporting yourself on the hips, elbow and hands raise your right leg to try and touch your left foot. Return both the legs one by one to the floor. Repeat this three times on either side. Then, lie on your back with legs stretched out. Supporting yourself on your elbows, lift the back up from the floor. With toes pointed, bring the left knee towards the chest, while the right leg is stretched out on the floor. Straighten the left leg and lift it up towards your head as far as it can go. Bend knees again and repeat five times. Do the same with the left leg. Cellulite is a problem, which really mars the look of the legs. It is not a disease or a disorder. It consists of lumps and tiny bulges that appear on the thighs. The bulges are very visible over jeans-clad legs and of course, when you go swimming. Another term for cellulite is ‘orange peel skin,’ because the skin on these areas resembles an orange peel. Cellulite is caused by deposits of water, fat and other wastes that collect in pockets beneath the skin. The slowing down of the body’s waste removal process is thought to be responsible for this condition. In other words, there is a relationship between body toxicity and cellulite. Chronic constipation, sluggish digestion, poor liver function, stress, chronic fatigue, insomnia and a sedentary lifestyle are also some contributory causes. The hardening of connective tissue is also involved, as this leads to the imprisonment of wastes in lumps under the skin. Cellulite is considered to be a lifestyle problem. Therefore, the solution lies in bringing about a change in the diet and lifestyle. Exercises, which help to improve blood circulation and lymphatic drainage, can help. The daily diet must contain enough foods, which

can be taken raw, like fresh fruits, salads, sprouts, along with unrefined cereals. Diets, which are high in animal protein, without enough fruits, vegetables and roughage, leave high toxic residue in the body. Drink plenty of water to encourage the removal of wastes. Of course, one must take the doctor’s advice before taking up regular exercise or making changes in the diet. Massage is an important part of the treatment of cellulite, along with ‘skin brushing’. It is best to massage the area, when the muscles are relaxed. Long stroking movements are given for stimulating blood and lymphatic flow. The area with cellulite is squeezed and kneaded, ending with the stroking movements again. Skin brushing helps the elimination of toxins. The entire surface of the body, excluding the face, is brushed by using a rough cloth or a natural bristle brush. Begin from the feet and go upwards towards the thighs. Then brush from lower to upper arms. Go across the shoulders and back. Brush gently on the chest and abdomen. Conclude by taking a warm shower. We have formulated an anti-cellulite oil to deal with this problem of cellulite. It contains essential oils and is based on aromatherapy. Almond and olive oils are used in the formulation as the carrier oils. The anti-cellulite oil helps to stimulate blood circulation and lymphatic drainage, helping the removal of toxins and wastes. It keeps the skin soft and smooth by improving texture and preventing infections and dehydration. Along with carrier oils, it contains the essential oils of neem, ashwagandha, shankhpushpi, devdaru and sandalwood. Neem purifies the skin by facilitating the removal of toxins, while ashwagandha is a tonic and stimulant. Shankhpushpi has a soothing effect on the skin, while devdaru is a powerful skin tonic and also tightens the skin. Sandalwood induces relaxation and protects the skin. The entire combination has been most helpful in relieving skin congestion. The carrier oils help to restore the normal 56

balances, tone the skin and muscles, and are extremely nourishing. Hair removal also plays an important role in keeping the legs soft and silky. One can opt for a method, which is most convenient. It can be waxing, shaving, epilating or even laser removal of hair. For daily care of the skin on the legs, sesame seed (til) oil may be massaged before bathing. If the skin is dry, it is best to use a mild, glycerine soap. Ayurvedic soaps or soap-free body washes are also available. Body scrubs can also be used on the legs. Mix besan with curd and add a little turmeric. Apply the paste on the legs about twenty minutes before your bath. When you remove the paste during your bath, it helps in the removal of dead skin cells too, making the skin clearer and brighter. Three teaspoons powdered barley can be mixed with one-teaspoon cold milk and two to three teaspoons lemon juice. Apply and leave it on for twenty minutes and then rinse off with water. Do this for two to three times a week. It is said to discourage hair growth over a period of time and makes the skin smooth. Beauty is a matter of total impact. Every part of your body and grooming gives you immense selfconfidence. It enables you to use your personal qualities and talents to your best advantage.

The latest in female fashion wear at affordable prices

E

stablished in 1991, Pragati Fashions Pvt Ltd., has grown rapidly to be recognised in the women fashion world by all the retailers in India as a manufacturer of unique female designer wear. The company innovates different kinds of western wear for women and girls. Its huge variety in tops, T-shirts, kurtis, shirts, trousers, denims, jackets, skirts, capris, cargo pants, midis, leggings, nightwear, indo-western wear and fashion accessories like belts, necklaces and bags easily attracts customers. The company’s success can be measured by its customer base spread over more than 2500 multi brand outlets (MBO). ‘Pragati’ has three main brands under its umbrella. ‘Zola’ (earthly fashion), ‘Olay’ (styling & features), and ‘Brisa’ (angel clothing). ‘Zola’ is meant for exclusive multi brand outlets (MBO) and exclusive brand outlets (EBO) and its products are given with a fixed MRP while ‘Olay’ is for all the retailers and semi wholesalers of India and abroad. In ‘Olay’, only the wholesale prices are given to its clients and not the retail price. Its product variety is also very different from ‘Zola’. On the other hand, ‘Brisa’ is purely dedicated to girl’s western and Indo western range. It caters to an age group from 2 years to 16 years, whereas ‘Olay’ and ‘Zola’ cater to an age 68

group of 16 years and beyond. Thus, with the help of two brands in the same age group, ‘Pragati’ has been able to increase its customer base even faster. The company is the pioneer in promoting the concept of ‘ready stock’. It has brought fashion at the doorsteps of retailers in a very convenient way. Retailers today can get stock for their stores within a week, which includes the time taken in transport. Hence, retailers can manage their stocks efficiently, thereby giving a boost to the overall sales. With its 14 exclusive franchisee owned retail outlets and its 16 exclusive shops in shop counters, ‘Pragati’ is recognised by the end consumers. The company plans to have another 100 shop in shop counters by the end of next year. The biggest challenge for the company has been to present the latest in fashion at low prices. This has been done most efficiently over the years without compromising on the quality and fit. ‘Pragati’ has already made its presence felt in the corporate chain stores like Central and Ethnicity, which are managed by the ‘Pantaloon’ group, who are the pioneers of retail trade in the country. The company is now embarking upon associating with other such leading groups.

Vikas Jain, Director, Club Fitline reveals more...

Why more and more people are turning towards gym and fitness centres?

The primary reason is the lack of physical activities undertaken by people. Today’s lifestyle is highly stressful and coupled with a sedentary work culture, this is turning into a very serious issue. Lack of physical activity results in increased anxiety levels. Weight gain has also become an issue. The other big issue is child obesity, which is rising. Arthritis, which used to be a problem for only the older age group, is now detected at an early age. Too much television and desk jobs have given rise to back problems, which have become a common ailment amongst the new generation. The rising awareness has made people involve themselves in physical activity like playing sports or walking in the park. Since any kind of sport requires more than one person and walking in the park may not be a wholesome physical activity, so a fitness centre is the best option. These centres not only improve the overall health of a person but also lower the anxiety levels. Today, fitness centres have become the best place to enjoy and improve health. Therefore within a gym, not only do they get answers to their problems but also security; pollution free atmosphere; use of various kinds of equipment and professional advice to reduce their stress levels.

We also have an in-house group activity area for conducting yoga, aerobics, less mills (a very high intensity form of aerobics conducted by Lesmills certified trainers) and dances like salsa, hip-hop, jazz and party dance. Members are provided one to one training facility, which is given by certified trainers. We have physiotherapists to ensure an injury proof environment and a nutritionist to achieve health related targets for members.

How are you planning to promote your fitness centre?

Mouth publicity is the best way to promote any club. We ensure that our members are satisfied. As a result, each satisfied member brings back an average of two new members to us. Besides the newspapers; we also advertise through hoardings and kiosks.

Who are your core customers, youngsters or middle aged people?

Initially, we had targeted the youth. However, today we have almost equal percentage of youngsters and middle aged people. Nowadays, we cater to all age groups and genders with specialised equipments and experts.

Tell us about your fitness equipment and services provided to your customers? How is the centre different from others?

Rejuvenate your life with feng shui Feng shui is a Chinese science of correcting the energy of a place. Easy to comprehend and practice, we bring to you some of these do-it-yourself tips, to bring you lots of positive energy.

T

he art of feng shui helps us in understanding the relationship between nature and ourselves, so that we may live in harmony within our environment. Negative energy impedes the flow of progress in our lives and the positive energy augments the growth. Feng shui helps to detect these two energies known as chi (subtle energy) and sha (hard energy, the opposite of chi) to provide directions for their optimal flow.

Feng shui at home

Feng shui at business and office

Here are some basic feng shui tips to enhance your business and office environment: • Always sit with a solid wall behind your back. Never sit with your back to the window for long periods of time or in line with the door, as you will be in the path of negative energy. • Do not face a wall, neither while working at your desk nor immediately as you enter the office. • Do not face away from the door while conducting business from home. Business will symbolically come through the door, so do not turn your back on it. • Be mindful of the quality of air in the office; improve the oxygen supply with feng shui air-purifying plants. • Put the computer in the north or west area of the office to enhance your creativity. Place the computer in the southeast if it is used to generate income. • Avoid a mirror in the office, as it can reflect the negative energy from clients to other people in the room. • Treat the files in your office with respect. They represent your past, present, and future business. • Place a safe, which is usually constructed of metal, in either west or northwest, as both directions represent the metal element. The safe symbolises the prosperity and financial security of a business.

Home is an essential part of our lives. If the home is not in accordance with chi and sha, you will face problems in your life everywhere. To get a good feng shui home, here are some helpful steps: • Avoid filling the home with unnecessary furniture, material, and broken stuff. • Fresh air and good quality light are essential for generating chi in the home. Open the windows often, introduce feng shui air-purifying plants or use incense sticks as air-purifier. Allow in as much natural light as possible. • Do not scatter shoes or slippers outside the main door, which should be free and clear. The chi (energy) with the wind will spread the smell of those shoes and slippers into the house and cause sickness. • Place a water fountain or fish tank in the home. Position it in a favourable area to attract whatever you want in life. • Do not place the refrigerator, washing machine, and washbasin in the kitchen or near the gas stove. Fire and water clash, causing family members to have disagreements. • Do not keep a red sofa in the home as red colour represents the element of fire. It gives rise to heavy work pressure, troubles and obstacles. • Display images of vibrant health and joy in the eastern area.

Feng shui for the bedroom

To create a perfect feng shui bedroom, you can use a variety of simple, practical tips: • Do not place a TV in the bedroom, as it can destroy the chi. If you cannot get rid of this habit then after watching the television, cover it with a plastic table cloth. • Plants in the bedroom are not good, unless the bedroom is fairly large and the plants are located far from the bed. • Open the windows or use a good quality air-purifier to keep the air fresh. • Use soothing colours to achieve a good balance in the bedroom. Best feng shui colours are pale white to rich chocolate brown. Do not use dark and dreary colours. • Choose the images for the bedroom wisely, as these carry powerful energy. Choose the images that you want to see happening in your life. Do not use sad and lonely images. • Avoid having the bed in direct line with the door. Use two bedside tables, and do not squish the bed into a corner. • Keep all the bedroom doors closed at night, be it the closet door, the bathroom door or the main door. This will allow for the best and most nourishing flow of energy to strengthen your health, as well as the health of your relationship. • There should not be any mirror opposite or at the side of your bed. Mirror opposite the bed can attract a third party to the relationship.

Feng shui for health

Feng shui can increase your energy levels and keep you healthy. Here are the ‘must-have’ feng shui priorities for a home that will support vibrant health: • Fresh, good quality air. • Sufficient, natural light. • Clutter-free space. • Place lush green plants or a water fountain in the eastern area. • The view that you first see as you open the main door is very important, as is the view from your bed. • Treat your body with respect and give it the energy of beauty and joy. It will inevitably attract good health and well being. 76

Feng shui through colours

This is one of the easiest ways to shift the energy into your space. Each colour is an expression of one of the five feng shui elements: fire, earth, metal, water, and wood. Choose the feng shui colours according to the energy you need and bring them into your space with the wall colour, art, photography, or various decor items. • Feng shui fire element colours, such as red, orange, purple, pink, and strong yellow will support you in your career efforts and also help you to achieve recognition. • Feng shui earth element colours, such as light yellow and beige in your home will help to create stability, nourishment and protection for all your relationships. • Feng shui metal element colours, such as grey and white will bring the qualities of sharpness, precision, clarity and efficiency. Its balanced presence will help you to live with clarity and lightness. • Feng shui water element colours, such as blue and black will bring a refreshing energy of calm, ease, purity and freshness. Water is also the ancient symbol of abundance. • Feng shui wood element colours, such as brown and green will bring energy of health, vitality and growth. It is also an expression of abundance and an ancient feng shui cure for wealth and prosperity.

Love tips with feng shui

Feng shui has a variety of love tips for a joyful and loving relationship: • If the bed is squished into one corner of the bedroom or is hiding behind the door then it is difficult to have a functional love relationship. • For a relationship to last long, both partners have to feel equal, respected, and treated well. Treat both sides of the bed equally. • A closet that has breathing room and a free flow of feng shui energy promotes better health and more opportunities. • Bedroom, bathroom and kitchen should be kept clutter free. • Avoid sad and dull images for a happy and loving relationship. • Treat the feng shui energy of the southwest area properly. Earth is the feng shui element, which needs to be nurtured. So keep colours and images that strengthen the earth or the fire elements. Avoid too much water, wood or metal feng shui elements. So follow these simple tips and invite positive energy into your life, to prosper and to remain healthy.

It’s Tattoo time

T

by Anu Singh Pruthi, Tattoo Empire India

attoo is one of the most popular forms of making a fashion statement. Its popularity is escalating day by day amongst every age group thereby adding flavour to every segment of the lifestyle. Even small children have found a lucrative reason to buy bubblegums, chocolates and chips, since many manufacturers seeing its popularity, have included water transfer tattoos as a sop. These days, it is part and parcel of young boys and girls personality and wardrobe. Girls glamourise their dresses with stick-on jewel tattoos. Just add a pinch of terrific tattoos on any part of the body and be known as a-la-mode in the society.

However, the art of tattoos is passing through an evolution. With new methods, new technology, new formula inks, bright colours and new age materials, it has totally transformed the user experience. New research and development is always on the go. For example, electronic giant Philips has come up with a new idea for electronic tattoos. Sounds fascinating, right! Well, it actually is. However, an electronic tattoo is not a permanent or temporary design; it is merely a dynamic print on your body. Stimulated by touch, this tattoo traverses the 80

landscape of the body, navigated by desire. It will be the easiest way to read someone’s feeling without getting confused by face expressions. You never know what comes next! Here are various types of tattoos:

1. Permanent tattoos: The name says it all. These are permanent in nature and cannot be easily changed, altered or removed. Removal is more expensive than its installation. Permanent tattoos can also cause serious health hazards. Thus, one has to be very careful from the time the artist is finalised till the time that the tattoo has healed. However, such tattoos are easy to maintain and are a lifetime art on the body. 2. Airbrush temporary tattoos: You might have seen spray painting on

a car or a bike, now get ready to see it on a human body. Airbrushing is an art in itself. Artists for many years, have been making paintings and portraits on canvas by using airbrushes. It is a small pen like instrument, connected to a small compressor. These tattoos last only for 5 to10 days, depending on the skin type and how you take care. These are waterproof but can easily be removed with alcohol. Thus, you can have different designs for different occasions.

These are the most common forms and are especially popular amongst children. As these are pre-made stickers, they can be easily transferred to the skin with slight application of water. These last for about 5 to10 days, depending upon the care taken. Since they are a form of stickers, they can easily tear if the skin is stretched.

3. Water transfer tattoos:

These are sticker tattoos, which look like jewellery. Any design can be made using different colour sheets cut in different patterns and pasting these with various materials like swarovski, crystals, stones, balls, glass beads and glitters. The final tattoo looks very exotic. It is the specialty of Indian craftsmen as everything is picked and hand pasted. No machine can execute this precision a detail.

4. Stick-on jewels:

These tattoos are like regular painting with brushes on body, and can be made using either water or alcohol based inks. Water based ink will last for a few hours whereas alcohol based ink will last for a few days.

5. Hand brush tattoos:

6. Mehendi tattoos: These tattoos cannot be

made in different colours as mehendi comes only in one colour. However, one can make different designs with the help of a cone or stencils. Mehendi can be messy and does not produce awesome results. However, it is the cheapest type and can be made without the use of expensive equipment.

7. Glitter tattoos: Glitter tattoos are more common amongst sports fans. Shimmering dust or glittering powder is pasted on the skin with the help of stencils.

Tattoos can definitely enhance your beauty but before adopting these, do ensure that these are done only by reputable professionals, as all the materials and colours should be non-toxic, laboratory-tested and sterile. Unhygienic practices and using low quality chemical based dyes can have adverse allergy reactions on the skin.

there but the tremendous amount of comfort level on the sets put me at ease right away.

How tough it really is to prove yourself without any godfather or filmi background?

It is like a huge mountain staring you right on the face. It is very tough, but not impossible and luckily I did have a dream debut. However, the fate of the film was not in my hands.

Which one is easier – walking on the ramp or acting in front of a camera? To be honest, walking on the ramp was a piece of cake for me earlier. Nowadays, my entry has been right at the end, as a show stopper. This definitely plays on your nerves because earlier the viewers would be staring more at your clothes but now the total focus is on you!

How do you consider modelling as a profession?

It is a very serious business. If you have a professional attitude, you can earn a lot of money not only in India but in overseas also. I remember when I won my international pageant; I was doing shows in South America and was paid up to 1000 US dollars a show at that time. Your personality really matters here. You have to look good always, that means eat well, work out hard and not party hard. It might look like child’s play but can be quite harrowing. Remember, nothing in life is easy, except looking into the others 'green lawn'.

What sea changes do you observe in the modelling industry of late?

Was it your dream to become a model and then an actor? How did it happen?

Yes, it was always my dream to be a model. I knew at the age of 16 what I wanted to do, but to be honest, I have never dreamt of being a part of the Indian film fraternity. It all happened by chance. One day, I got a call from Ram Gopal Varma's office and when I walked out, life had changed completely.

How was the working experience with the biggies of Bollywood in your first movie?

It was surreal. I had never imagined that my first break would be with Amitabh Bachchan, Ajay Devgan, and above all, Sushmita Sen as my leading lady! It was a great experience. I learnt a lot from them. They never treated me like a newcomer. I learnt that no matter how famous and successful you become, one must remain humble. I was definitely very excited on the first day of shoot. Of course, the nervousness was 86

To be honest, it is an irony that there is a huge inflow of international models in India, who are eating our pie and this goes against Indian models. If the traffic is both ways then it would be fair but so far, it’s just the inflow. It has become highly competitive both for girls and boys but I wish that all the modelling contests, which happen here, would raise the bar.

According to you, what are the pros and cons of modelling?

Well, modelling life is a good life. You hang out with the crème de la crème; you get to meet many influential people from all walks of life; you make decent money; you travel a lot; see places you haven’t seen before and this is all for free. However, it is not something you can do forever. Modelling has a life of five years. After a while,

people won't take you seriously enough and one will find it difficult to sustain a livelihood just through this.

in a Hollywood flick. As far as priority goes, it just depends on who gets me first.

No, I don’t think that just being good looking can help you to excel. Surely in the beginning it could help you to clinch a job but if you don’t balance it out correctly, you cannot go very far.

Currently, I have finished shooting for the movie, Toss. I have signed another film, which is slated to start soon. I am really choosy about the roles, which I select.

Do you think that nowadays good looks Tell us about your upcoming movies? Are and good physique help anyone to excel in you choosy about your roles or you go for any field of working? each and every role that is offered?

Most of our Bollywood actors and actresses are bitten by the Hollywood bug. Are you also a part of this category?

I am not stabbing Bollywood in the back by saying this, but it would be a mind-boggling experience to actually get a part

Do you want to keep yourself restrained to a particular image like of ‘action’ or ‘romantic hero’? No, I do not. In fact, I am open to playing any character that is challenging and which will help me in clinching a vital role in the film.

Rapid fire round:

If not an actor then: Heading a clothing company. A movie that you wish you would have worked in: Dev D Sexy about you: My voice. Mantra of living a happy life: Do not take life too

seriously.

Idea of spending leisure time: Watching a movie, playing golf, chilling out with close friends.

My definition of fashion: It is indefinable. It is what you make of it.

Ban as a fashion police: Striped shirt with striped pants.

Style mantra of dressing: Slick, fitted, classy. A fashion tip, which really works: Know your body and your skin tone.

My strongest point: Self belief. My weakest point: I am a bit naïve. Casting couch: It exists, if you want it. Politics: Personal politics a no-no but country

politics, definitely.

Marriage:

Very sacred and meant forever.

The real life heroes They have earned a niche among the hearts of their fans through their impeccable screen performance. They turn the tables on the villains; fight off adverse destiny and face reel life’s ups and downs. Surprisingly, now they are no more reel life heroes. Amitabh Bachchan

One of the legends of Indian film industry, Amitabh Bachchan, famously known as ‘Big B’ is back to the silver screen after his prolonged bed rest. Time and again, his unyielding spirit conquers his ill health and despite his exhausted age, Mr.Bachchan is not ready to give up. He is vigorously shooting for movies such as Teen Paati, following Johnny Mastana and Aladdin. Director Ram Gopal Verma is also ready to take off his action thriller film, Rann with him as the protagonist. The real life Shahenshah!

Govinda

The dancing maestro, Govind Arun Ahuja began his career with 1986’s super hit film Ilzam. This versatile actor left no stone unturned to prove himself a worthy and dedicated actor in Bollywood. He had an accident while shooting for his movie Khuddar, yet he continued shooting for the film. Despite the controversies, cold filmy and political career, he made a comeback with David Dhawan's comedy, Partner. As of now, he has decided to quit politics to revive his acting career.

Shekhar Suman

88

n

The chachu of small screen, Shekhar started his career with the famous TV serial Wah Janab. Later on, he turned towards the big screen and acted in almost 30 films. Alas! But despite the successful presence in Utsav’s raunchy ‘Man kyon bahka…’, none of his movies could make a mark in the boxoffice. In 1993, he made a mark as chachu in the most successful TV comedy show, Dekh Bhai Dekh. With his finely honed sense of humour, he soon became the king of the small screen after hosting a number of satirical TV shows. His talk shows such as, 'Movers and Shakers’ and ‘Simply Shekar’ received rave reviews. He has been one of the prominent judges of ‘The Great Indian Comedy Show', the first of its kind show to nurture stand-up comedians. And of course, he is one of the pioneers of the stand-up comedy acts in India.

Abhishek Bachchan

Also known as ‘Junior B’, Abhishek’s performance in Dostana was the talk of tinsel town. After 13 subsequent flops, his journey from Refugee to Yuva, Dhoom, Bunty Aur Bubli, and Sarkar was full of upheaval. After Yuva, he won his second Filmfare award as the ‘Best Supporting Actor’ role in Sarkar. Despite receiving many negative reviews, he did not give in to destiny and after marrying former Miss World turned actress, Aishwarya Rai, he has a renowned place in the advertisement and movies world. His fans too have high hopes from his upcoming movies. Really, a super hero!

Salman Khan

Tusshar Kapoor

Son of jumping jack Jeetendra, and brother of TV soaps queen, Ekta Kapoor, Tusshar Kapoor made his debut in Bollywood through his movie, Mujhe Kuch Kehna Hai, for which, he won the ‘Filmfare Best Debut Award’. He tried his luck in a number of films and was highly praised for his role in Shoot Out At Lokhandwala. Though his gloomy stars started smiling on him with Khakhee and Kya Kool Hain Hum but thanks to his movie Golmaal and Golmaal Returns that he gained the lost paradise.

Arshad Warsi

Akshay Kumar

The most wanted sexy bachelor once again stunned his audience with his musical notes in Yuvvraaj . Sadly, it seems that Salman and controversies are made for each other. Negligent driving, hunting the endangered Chinkara, turbulent relationship with actress Aishwarya Rai, duel with Vivek Oberoi and humiliation of Katrina (she had to sit with the auto driver while Salman drove the auto)...the only respite to Salman’s fading image came finally through the famous reality TV game show ‘Dus Ka Dam’.

The real king of Bollywood, Akshay Kumar is now a hot cake in tinsel town and no doubt, lady luck is smiling and blessing him copiously. From being a chef to being a martial arts trainer, he started his career as a model and then became an actor. His success rose in 2007, when he starred in four consecutive commercial hits. His film, Singh Is Kinng, has been declared as a blockbuster after breaking the first week’s worldwide record of Shahrukh’s Om Shanti Om, which recorded the previous highest figure. He is a versatile actor now and his popularity knows no boundary.

Popularly known as ‘Circuit’, Arshad has made a name for himself in Bollywood after his critics-acclaimed role in Munnabhai series. He faced various ups and downs in his reel and real life. He was orphaned at the age of 14 and struggled hard for living in Mumbai. Through Tere Mere Sapne, he kicked off his filmi journey but his acting skills sharpened with Munnabhai MBBS. Anchoring the reality show, ‘Bigg Boss’ also enhanced his popularity and after the movies Maine Pyar kyun Kiya, Lage Raho Munnabhai and Golmaal series, Arshad is ready to explore more.

GupShup Clooney in love again

Hollywood actor George Clooney seems to be getting serious about his new Italian lover Elisabetta Canalis, a model and a television journalist. Veteran Clooney recently returned after a biking date with her. He was introduced to this beauty girl by mutual friends in Rome. However, Elisabetta has earlier been seen with football stars, Christian Vieri and Parma Reginaldo, before meeting the actor. Now only time will tell, who deserts whom first, Clooney or Elisabetta. We think that Clooney will be the winner again, as he ditched his last ‘serious’ girlfriend, waitress Sarah Larson, only after 11 months.

Britney’s ‘Sole Food’

Aftab’s new passion

Aftab Shivdasani is happy these days because his movie Kambakkht Ishq did well at the box office and he also announced his production house, ‘Rising Sun’. Aftab wanted to create opportunities for himself by producing such films, which would otherwise not come to him. “The main motto of my production house is to make unconventional films commercially. I wanted to do this for quite some time now and felt that the right time is when my passion is at its optimum,” said excited Aftab. However, Aftab denied rumours of retirement from movies. “I will always be known first as an actor and then a producer. The production company is secondary because acting comes first to me.” Don’t worry Aftab, who cares about your acting?

Mugdha’s bitter birthday bash

The success of a single movie does not ensure a venerable star-status. Model turned actress Mugdha Godse realised this maxim lately. She wanted to celebrate her birthday in grand style with her friends from the modelling world and Bollywood. However, her first celebration after entering Bollywood turned sour, when her co-stars such as Ajay Devgan, Bipasha Basu, Fardeen Khan and director Rohit Shetty did not turn up at her party. She was constantly looking at the entrance hoping that her colleagues would drop by but alas! Old friends Madhur Bhandarkar, Priyanka Chopra and Neil Nitin Mukesh were there but it was not enough for the poor birthday girl to cheer.

Suniel Shetty’s nightmare

Bollywood brawny Suniel Shetty has perturbed the Airports Company of South Africa (ACSA). The actor, who was shooting in Durban, alleged that he has been robbed for the second time in South Africa and airport luggage handlers could be the main culprits in this ‘organised crime’. “I think this happens because they can see what is in the luggage.” Airport authorities are worried with this statement as this can affect the expected influx of tourists for the FIFA World Cup to be hosted across South Africa next year. The actor, however, added that the incidents would not stop him coming back to South Africa as he had fallen in love with the country. Good news for South African airport luggage handlers!

Madonna's publicity funda Sensational Madonna loves limelight. The famous pop singer is again in the news as her private telephone calls are set to be made public. Her steamy answering machine messages, which she left for her former lover in the 1990, are ready for sale in New York. She faxed notes to ex-boyfriend Jim Albright and left erotic messages on his voice mail. These letters and taped calls will be auctioned off with the recorded messages in two cassettes. The auction is expected to fetch approximately 40,000 US dollars. It is killing two birds with one stone, publicity as well as money in one shot.

End of the war

Two titans of Bollywood, Aishwarya and Shah Rukh have decided to patch up their seven year old cold war. Aishwarya has consented to work in Shah Rukh’s next home production movie. Their clash began after Aishwarya was ousted from SRK’s home production movie, Chalte Chalte due to Salman’s nosy behaviour on the sets. However, things are now looking positive as both stars have decided to bury their hatchets and work together for a flick to be produced by SRK’s ‘Red Chillies Entertainment’. Are Vivek and Salman listening?

Lesbian Fox

Steaming beauty Megan Fox has already publicised her crush for girls. She admitted her fascination for women and confessed a secret crush for Hollywood actress, Angelina Jolie. Recently the sexy siren showed her bisexual urges with a lesbian kiss in her new movie, Jennifer’s Body. The 23 year old was able to fulfil her fantasies with a girl to girl sexy smooch in this film. "I think I’m pretty sexy in it. There is a hint of a lesbian relationship in this girl-to-girl kiss,” declared Megan. The Transformers star has made a lot of news in the past year and has been regularly voted as the sexiest woman in the world. Run girls run, Megan is coming!

After the success of Ghajini, it was assumed that Bollywood directors have got a winning formula to keep cash registers ringing up at box office. However, it is an irony that more and more directors and producers are still showing faith in romance and comedy themes. In this context, action director Rajkumar Santoshi’s romantic comedy is now ready to amuse the audience. Starring Ranbir Kapoor, Katrina Kaif and Upen Patel, the movie is a love story of a depressed lover-boy. According to Santoshi, “This is my first love story. People seem to think it is an intense love story but it is not. It has lots of very light and very humorous moments." Produced by Ramesh S Taurani, the film is written jointly by Rajkumar Santoshi & R.D.Tailang. All the songs are recorded by music director, Pritam.
