A Month OF SUNDAYS! Every Sunday in November MB is launching a Tom Baxter tutorial video. Tune in for a little armchair technique top-up. 10 / MODERN BARBER MAGAZINE

om Baxter (FB Tom Baxter/ Tom Baxter Hair) is a busy barber that’s been creating cut and colour (yep colour!) tutorials with a difference and this November, he’s creating four exclusive looks just for MB with our ‘Month of Sunday’s’ series. Tom’s ‘See it through my eyes’ video tutorials are exactly that…a barber’s eye view of the technique as it happens. Tom says “I started creating the videos because I saw a lot of educational videos that were good end results but you couldn’t really see what was going on…how closed the clippers were, the angle they were going in at etc. So I thought ‘If only you could see it how they see it’! My approach to barbering is very open minded, I mix everything I know from men’s and ladies hair and combine them. My style is very relaxed. Looks that can be worn on a daily basis, I cut for my clients not for Instagram. I approach every head with a thought of how can I make this really ‘pop’ but make it wearable, believable and most importantly do’able for my client. The most views I’ve had so far is 52k, mainly thanks to Kamisori shears for sharing my work on

I started creating the videos because I saw a lot of educational videos that were good end results but you couldn’t really see what was going on.

ow four lucky winners will get the opportunity to hang out with the man himself at his barbershop, Baldy’s Barbers and take part in tailored workshops around skills and techniques of their choice. Each winner will also be kitted out with a new Andis US Pro Cordless Li clipper. This clever clipper is powered by a lithium-ion battery and features a high power rotary motor with high blade speed and the added convenience of cordless cutting. This clipper powers through multiple cuts with ease, guaranteeing the ultimate manoeuvrability, versatility and precision for every cut.

their site. The head cam is a way of seeing it from my perspective. See my hands work. See in detail how deep my layering is or every move I make with my clippering. I use a Go Pro like surfers or mountain bikers! Quality is fantastic and easy to use and I edit with iMovie on the Apple Mac, my editing process takes me around 35 minutes. I’m doing my videos exclusively for Modern Barber as I believe in the magazine and believe it’s the right place for my videos to get seen to really have an impact.” The first video launches November 6th so follow Tom or MB on FB Modern Barber Magazine, Twitter and Insta @modernbarbermag to watch out for updates.

Offering clients an easy way to purchase gifts should be on everyone’s wish list. Here’s a couple of shops that make the most of the present.

Jon’s TIPS THINK ABOUT YOUR TARGET MARKET: IT NEEDS TO APPEAL TO MEN AND WOMEN, AS NINE OUT OF 10 TIMES, IT WILL BE THE MUM, DAUGHTER OR GIRLFRIEND WHO WILL BE BUYING IT FOR THE MAN IN THEIR LIFE. MAKE IT SPECIAL: OFFER SOMETHING DIFFERENT WHETHER THAT’S IN YOUR CHOICE OF PRODUCTS OR YOUR PACKAGING. IT NEEDS TO BE SOMETHING UNIQUE THAT CAPTURES PEOPLE’S ATTENTION AND INTEREST. DO YOUR SUMS: CONSIDER WHAT IT COSTS TO PRODUCE AND WHAT YOUR TARGET MARKET WILL BE WILLING TO PAY. PROMOTE YOUR GIFTS: MAKE SURE PEOPLE KNOW ABOUT YOUR GIFT SETS. USE THE WINDOW DISPLAYS, POSTERS IN YOUR SHOPS, SOCIAL MEDIA AND WEBSITE TO PROMOTE YOUR GIFT SETS.

ast year Britons spent a whopping estimated £24.4 billion* on Christmas gifts and Yuletide isn’t the only reason to be generous. Birthdays, weddings, engagements, graduations, Father’s Day, Valentine’s Day… the list is long, so why not make it easy for your customers to spend with you. Jon Bourne of Barbertown (barbertown.co.uk) has three growing shops and creates ‘on brand’ Barbertown gift sets packed with Proraso. He calls them ‘Man Cans’ and says “We love the quality and range of products that the Proraso brand offers, so we decided to handpick specific products which complement each other and package them in a novel way. The retail price for the Man Cans is £29.99. It is more cost effective

to purchase the Can rather than buying the products individually and it is a great way to introduce a range of products to your customers. This is a relatively new area that we have moved into but they have proven really popular especially for Father’s Day this year.” Jon is careful to only choose

R

obert Rix of The Master Barber’s Shop in Southport (themasterbarber.co.uk) takes his retail very seriously and gift sets are big business in his shop. Robert and his team start preparing for Christmas retail in August. Robert says “We sell ready-made gift sets like Penhaligons and Floris and we make gift sets up ourselves such as Captain Fawcett’s Beard Comb and Beard Oils. The price point starts at about £25 and runs up to £100. Our top retail sale so far is £451 and our average retail sale is £63. When retail sales average 88% profit you can understand why we put so much thought, energy and planning into it! We also stock empty boxes and all the ribbon and trimmings so that we can make up gift boxes on the spot for customers that want something bespoke.” Robert’s son, Dan Rix is in charge of the retail displays and six display windows and the pair hit the gift fairs and trade shows every year on the hunt for new and appealing stock. “The technical sale is the easiest and you have to really know your onions, you need to know what’s in the brush

or how to care for the blade. Demonstrating expertise builds trust too. We don’t just sell hair and men’s grooming items, we think broadly. Manicure sets, hand sawn bone combs, even horn drinking vessels! One of our popular natural bathing sponges is £90. We take it very seriously and invest in the stock. You can’t sell what you don’t have. Our top floor area is set up as a mock retail area and we train our staff there through role play,” explains Robert.

The hair was cut by Michael Kontos of London School of Barbering. Firstly, the length on the top was reduced to become more manageable for reshaping.

Then the fade and the outline were created.

STEP THREE

STEP FOUR

STEP FIVE

Then Fudge Salt Spray and Bodyfying Whip were applied to the hair and the hair on the top was dried with a paddle brush to add lift.

A Grade 5 was used across the apex which is the shortest point of the flat top and all lengths were cut back to that guideline length.

A clipper-over-comb technique was used working around the centre point to build up the corners through the curvatures and the fringe area.

STEP NINE

This was done several times to ensure a crisp smooth finish created by blowdrying between each pass of the crown with the clippers to ensure the hair was standing upright.

From this step you can clearly see the hair was balanced from the length at the apex which gives you the square finish throughout the top.

To prepare for the colour a crescent shaped section was taken above the right eye to the crown as shown.

Formula A was applied using a back-to-back foiling technique as shown.

STEP ELEVEN

This technique was repeated throughout the entire crescent shaped section using Formula A.

Here is the finished foil technique. The colour was left to develop.

STEP TWELVE

STEP THIRTEEN

Formula A was then removed and Formula B was applied, left to develop and then rinsed.

Here is the finished colour result. To style the look, the hair was dried with Bodyfying Whip and Salt Spray, finished with Matte Hed through the ends and finished with Skyscraper Extra.

HOW TO MANAGE APPOINTMENTS AND WALK-INS

• Introduce appointments for the busier barbers on your team, while barbers building a chair can cater to walk-in clients. • Allocate specific times – possibly when you are less busy – and open them up for online booking, which you can also promote on your social networks.

Trevor Jennings is General Manager of Shortcuts Software, here he shares his tips on balancing time for you and your customer.

• Consider priority booking, similar to the airlines. If a client wants a specific slot secured then he pays a premium, even if it’s just £2 extra for the privilege. Shortcuts have seen an increase of barbers offering this service and evidence shows that customers are more than happy to pay for the convenience.

• Shortcuts offers a Wait Board for your reception area, so those arriving can see what is available and how long they’ll have to wait. • Shortcuts have a Check-in facility so clients can secure a slot for later that day and just turn up at that time rather than sit clogging up the wait area. • Promote your app in-store as well as online so clients know they have the option of engaging with you on their smartphone and booking direct.

HOW TO PLAN A CASHFLOW FORECAST

actually enter and leave your account. If you use a business credit card to pay bills or purchase new equipment make sure you consider when the money will go out.

KPMG Small Business Accounting offers discounts to NHF (nhf.info) members and they know a thing or two about keeping an eye on the cash.

3. Don’t overlook smaller items: Include every possible item of income and expenditure in your cash-flow forecast. You might not think the occasional missed expense like new printer ink or the odd utility bill will make much of a difference but over time they soon add up.

ash-flow is the lifeblood of your barbershop. It’s the accessible money you have in your business at any given time. It is the money you use to pay the rent, business rates, utility bills, staff wages, suppliers and VAT to name but a few. A cash-flow forecast is a vital and relatively simple piece of financial planning so here’s a little help to get you started. 34 / MODERN BARBER MAGAZINE

1. Err on the side of caution: Being realistic or even pessimistic when drawing up a cash-flow forecast will give your shop the very best chance. Underestimating your incomings and overestimating your outgoings can help to ensure there’s always a healthy level of cash available. 2. Account for the time lag: Think carefully about when money will

4. Build in best and worst case scenarios: A forecast is simply an educated guess, and although you might have a good idea how many sales you’re going to make next September, you really can’t be sure. One way to combat this uncertainty is to build in a best-case and worst-case scenario. This will help to steady the ship in difficult times.

Include every possible item of income and expenditure in your cashflow forecast. You might not think the occasional missed expense like new printer ink or the odd utility bill will make much of a difference but over time they soon add up.

The time your client spends in your chair is sacred, a time to shut off from the mayhem of daily life but the pressures clients are escaping also make it increasingly difficult for them to be flexible about their appointment time. In a world where time is short, some barbers are under increasing pressure to run an appointment book with guaranteed slots. But mixing a walk-in model with appointments can be tricky. You don’t want to upset a waiting client by dealing with one who, as far as the waiting client is concerned, has just walked through the door. But there are ways you can juggle the two systems so everyone is happy!” says Trevor.

HERE’S TREVOR’S TOP TIPS ON BLENDING APPOINTMENTS AND WALKINS:

5. Factor in seasonality: One of the biggest mistakes a business can make when forecasting cash-flow is to assume its sales will remain constant throughout the year. So if your sales usually fall during the winter months, make sure this is represented in your forecast. Those times when income is at its lowest are exactly when an accurate cash-flow forecast will help your business the most.
