odern Barber had the great privilege to sponsor the hotly contested Male Grooming/Barbershop of the Year category at the BHBA’s this September. It was a tough category for all the amazing finalists however it was Grizzly’s Male Hair Salon (@grizzlysmhs) in Horsham that took home the trophy. This contemporary shop consistently puts quality and service at the centre of all they do and goes out of their way to create a luxury experience for their customers. Owner Chris says “Being acknowledged from a business perspective in an industry where everyone is competing to have an impact is huge for us. It reconfirms we are not only doing things right but we are meeting the standard it takes to be a success. We are truly honoured to 4 /WWW.MODERNBARBER.CO.UK

“BEING ACKNOWLEDGED FROM A BUSINESS PERSPECTIVE IN AN INDUSTRY WHERE EVERYONE IS COMPETING TO HAVE AN IMPACT IS HUGE FOR US.” receive this award and it is huge pat on the back for the team. Beyond anything else I felt the team deserved to win for all their hard work. Plus I love winning but also have learnt that not winning can teach you a great deal and fuel your fire even more. So we had nothing to lose.”

As someone volunteering her time to give free haircuts to disabled adults Charlotte expressed determination to qualify and one day own her own shop. After saving for three years to pay for training, she is naturally excited about her success. “I’m so overwhelmed and can’t wait. Barbering is where my heart is and I’m determined to get to the top. This is an incredible opportunity for me and I’ll give it 100%!” Martin also stood out to the judges and shares a similar caring outlook. “When I found barbering, I found myself” he says. “It was the only thing that made sense and it has transformed my life. Now, this amazing opportunity will help me reach a new level so I can excel and continue to help homeless people feel and look better.” Martin and Charlotte are due to receive five days of training and assessment, as well as Andis products and tools to assist in their qualification and beyond. The training is provided by the Mike Taylor Education academy in Dorset.

PORE ME It’s the bodies largest organ and accounts for 15% of our entire body weight, so why do we take it for granted? Find out more about best practice on taking care of skin and scalp.

A

healthy scalp is essential to healthy hair growth but it’s also under constant stress from…well, stress, plus pollution, a poor diet and even overuse of styling products. Barber and Trichologist Giovanni De Lellis MIT (ipswichtrichology.co.uk) has wisdom to share on ensuring that you and your customers have all the gen to keep scalps in top condition. “Just like the rest of the skin on your body the scalp needs regular cleansing to keep it in good condition. This simple process will maintain a healthy scalp in the majority of people. It is very common for me to see patients that have an excess build-up of sebum, hair product and dead skin which can lead to an itchy scalp, scalp flaking, inflammation and even affect the quality of hair growth. Common signs of an unhealthy scalp include a tight and itchy scalp, changes to hair texture, increased hair shedding and increased flaking or scalp sensitivity. It is also recommended to limit chemical treatments. While hair colour and perms can work wonders at improving the look of your hair and even boost confidence, the chemicals used in these treatments can irritate and dry your scalp. Make sure a qualified professional is performing any treatment to limit damage. Another common problem I particularly noticed last summer is sun 10 / WWW.MODERNBARBER.CO.UK

“THIS MAY SOUND SIMPLE – BUT AVOID SUN DAMAGE TO YOUR HAIR. THIS IS PARTICULARLY IMPORTANT IF YOU ALREADY HAVE SOME NATURAL HAIR THINNING AS NATURALLY THE SCALP IS MORE EXPOSED. “

damage. This may sound simple – but avoid sun damage to your hair. This is particularly important if you already have some natural hair thinning as naturally the scalp is more exposed. It can lead to a sore, inflamed scalp and like all sun damage can increase the likelihood of skin cancer. The simplest way to protect your scalp from the sun is by wearing a hat. Choosing hair care products with sunscreen provides some protection and good conditioners can help although for prolonged exposure the hat is still the best option! Diet and stress can also contribute to overall scalp health.

M B : F E AT U R E Your scalp and hair growth will only benefit from a healthy, balanced and varied diet containing all essential nutrients. In reality it can be difficult to achieve with our busy lifestyles, so if this is the case a good general multi-vitamin supplement may benefit you. Don’t ignore any unusual or new symptoms on your scalp – as it is often more severe when left untreated. In some cases these symptoms will affect hair growth – sometimes permanently. If you have any concerns refer to a GP or Trichologist.” Taking care of facial skin ultimately makes us look younger, healthier and more vital and that can only be a good thing. Maria Comparetto is a professional make-up artist and men’s skin specialist and says that the biggest problem with male skin is pretty basic - men don’t get enough sleep, drink enough water, use regular sunscreen, take care when shaving or eat the right diet! “Male skin typically experiences dehydration, irregular pigmentation, spots and ingrowing hairs. A good moisturiser, sunscreen and plenty of water is the best advice I offer.”

BROTOX IS GO! ALAN BEAK OF RUGER BARBER @RUGER_ BARBER HAS LAUNCHED MANLY BOTOX IN HIS SHOP. HERE’S WHY… “As barbers we’re not just here to cut hair, we make our clients look good, feel good, and give them a lift that increases confidence and general wellbeing. The fountain of youth hasn’t been found yet and so if a few small injections to the face can make you look younger, smooth tired lines and make you look more youthful, then I’m game. We’d had a few clients that had recently had Botox which made me see the opportunity. Luckily for me one of my oldest friends from school is a fully registered aesthetics clinician. Sian is such a perfectionist, so it was natural for us to go into business together. We offer Botox treatments that smooth the skin, decrease lines, crow’s feet, smoking lines and deliver lip enhancements and all round facial rejuvenation. Prices vary from £180 - £220.”

Regular skin care doesn’t have to soak up time or effort either, Carlie Cardle of Ruger Barber in Lytham delivers around 10 facials a week for her clients and recommends a once monthly routine for a professional facial. “This facial lasts for half an hour and includes a cleanse, exfoliation mask, head massage, eye treatment and a moisturiser. The treatment is charged at £22. Men’s skin is a lot oilier, so men tend to have a build-up on their skin leaving it congested. We steam the skin allowing the products to lift away any dirt and oil on the surface. The mask we apply not only exfoliates but draws out oil like a sponge without stripping the skin. Anything charcoal based, is a dream for men’s skin. My favourite skin care product has to be the Acumen Eye Energizing Hydrating Gel. It instantly brightens and tightens the eye area helping to reduce puffiness and tired looking eyes. I pop this product in the fridge to give it that cool hydrating feel when they need it. Awesome for a hangover too!”.

CHRISTMAS CRACKER It’s one of the busiest times of the year, so add a little sauce to the bottom line by cashing in on Christmas gifting.

O

n average every UK consumer spends £567* on Christmas and interestingly men soak up the lion’s share by spending around 15% more than women on gifts. As barbers you probably know that your mostly male customers are what the Journal of Sciences describe as ‘utilitarian’ shoppers, which essentially means that men shop to tick a box. Well the great news is that your available gift options can help your customers tick a handful of presents off their list for their fathers, brothers, sons and friends when they drop in for a cut ahead of the Christmas rush. With a little planning some seasonal vibes and a bit of chat can deliver easy cash to the coffers. MB spoke with business consultant and trainer Emil McMahon (emilmcmahon. com) about best practice on retail, his recent book ‘Don’t Sell’ is full of advice and swerves the hard sell converting the opportunity to gain sales through problem solving advice for customers.

14 / WWW.MODERNBARBER.CO.UK

“USE YOUR SOCIAL MEDIA PLATFORMS TO SHARE THE MESSAGE THAT CHRISTMAS IS COMING TO YOUR SHOP, SHOWCASE THE PRODUCTS YOU HAVE THAT MAKE GREAT GIFTS AND SHARE THE MESSAGES AND IMAGES FREQUENTLY.” EMIL’S TIPS ON CHRISTMAS GIFTING 1. The most important element of Christmas and the potential retail opportunities available to you is to be serious with your offering. A few gift boxes placed around doesn’t create a festive feeling. Invest in the gift packs your suppliers have on offer and create

a seasonal display that customers can see from all areas of your shop and dress the display area with Christmas decorations. 2. Make the products accessible - think about supermarket shelves and how easy it is to browse and select and see pricing. 3. Use your social media platforms to share the message that Christmas is coming to your shop, showcase the products you have that make great gifts and share the messages and images frequently. 4. Get the team together for a preChristmas meeting, ideally this should be early November as everyone will be gearing up to start their festive shopping. Share the objectives for seasonal gifting, so that they understand what the expectations are. Your team need to understand what you have available, so that they can share the information with the customer. *Deloitte’s 2018 European Christmas Survey

YOU NEVER STOP LEARNING

I

love this period of the year, it’s soooo busy! As I write this column, I’m looking at my diary and realising I’ve got just two weekends off in the next six weeks. We have three Wahl shows coming up: Professional Beauty Mumbai, HJ North and the biggie, Salon International. Can. Not. Wait. Wahl UK were privileged enough to host the latest Global Lead Educator summit at our new Wahl Academy, with 20 presenters from 20 different countries attending. There’s an old saying that you never stop learning, and this couldn’t be truer of the summit. We had one session where each presenter showed us a new technique or method and I was blown

“THERE’S AN OLD SAYING THAT YOU NEVER STOP LEARNING, AND THIS COULDN’T BE TRUER OF THE SUMMIT.” away by what I learnt for stage work, seminars, barbering and hairdressing skills. I’ve already started to use Spain and Canada tekkers. This is something that I’d recommend you guys doing in your shop, host a staff training night where team members show each other their signature cut or technique. You’ll be surprised how much you will learn from each other. Talent within can be greater than you think. So it won’t be long before we head in to the busy festive period, now this is THE time to think about retail and how you 32 / WWW.MODERNBARBER.CO.UK

SAM CAMPAGNA GLOBAL LEADER SUMMIT

can make the most of the opportunity. Here are five tips for successful retailing: 1. Right range of product (ask your staff to research) 2 Right price point for your shop 3. Electrical products (both for male and female. Ie Dryers & straighteners) 4. Staff trained on product knowledge 5. Motivational strategy for staff incentive If you get this right, you will be more productive and sell more products. Hopefully I’ll see you at one of the upcoming events and remember, be prepared to do what other shops aren’t doing and make sure your service levels stick out a mile. Over and out. Global not local.

THE BEFORE

03

To create the fade Kieron used his Andis Cordless Pro Alloys with a 1.5 guard with an open blade. He then worked down to a zero guard. Kieron fades backwards so that when he uses the 1.5 guard working down, he blurs the line and doesn’t chase it. 40 / WWW.MODERNBARBER.CO.UK

04

Use a talc stick and rub over the area of skin beneath the fade to create a barrier before using the foil shaver. The talc also helps with the smooth running of the shaver. Work up to the guideline and use the shaver in an up-and-down motion and rotate to lift and cut the hair down to the skin.

Kieron Price (@kieronthebarber) of Raw Image in Aylesbury created this up-to-date Caesar crop with crisscross pattern. Kieron chose this shape to showcase a couple of his fave MVRCK by Mitch (@mvrckbarbering) products. He’s also an Educator for the brand!

02

Take the time to find the client’s crown. As the hair is worn forward in a Caesar crop ensure that you know that the hair will sit just right before cutting. Thoroughly saturate the hair.

Put in the guideline for the skin fade just on top of the occipital bone and follow the curve around the ear. Kieron used his Andis T Cordless Outliners with a GTX blade to create his guideline.

05

06

Isolate the fringe and cut the top section to around 4cm. Chip in to the hair with the corner of the clipper to texturise.

Comb down the hair to the fringe and blow dry before cutting the guideline. DO NOT cut the hair wet or it may bounce back up when dry and leave the hair too short or uneven.

THE AFTER

07

The hair has been sprayed with MRVCK by Mitch Grooming Spray and then blow dried with a Denman brush. Kieron loves Grooming Spray because it gives a natural finish and hold without clumping. Cut a blunt crisp fringe. Kieron used his Andis USPRO Alloy clippers. Do not push the hair but simply touch the blade against the fringe and balance the weight of the clipper with your index or ring finger against the forehead for control.

08

To finish the crown Kieron used MVRCK Dry Paste which isn’t greasy and stays in all day. He rubbed a small amount of product through the hair using his hand in a claw shape and working in a circular motion for optimum texture.

09

Kieron was inspired by barbers that he follows on IG to create this fresh criss-cross pattern. Take time to assess the head for the best pattern placement before cutting.

10

Kieron used his Andis T Outliners to create this line and likes to turn the clipper upwards to thicken the line and really take away the hair for a crisp finish. WWW.MODERNBARBER.CO.UK / 41
