arberology took the title as UK’s Barbershop of the Year at the Barber Awards at Barber Connect in 2016 for their shop in Birmingham’s Jewellery Quarter. Now they’ve repeated their winning formula for a new four chair shop in nearby Harborne. arry Jackson of Garry’s Barbershop in Holywood Northern Ireland (FB Garrys Barber Shop) made 2016 his breakthrough year for modelling! He was invited to strut his stuff on the catwalk for Belfast’s Alternative Fashion Week. Each show celebrated society’s

diversity and included tattooed, older, mobility-impaired, lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender models. AFW attracted fantastic press and Garry was a natural. It’s wasn’t his only modeling job in 2016 either. Garry is also ambassador for Dee Graham Tailor Made Suite and Urban Tonic ! Move over Zoolander!

CUT DUBLIN SUCCESS

B

arber Cut Dublin held at the Opium Rooms last October was the first event of its kind and was founded by Sam Donnelly of Sam’s Barbers and Keiron Campbell Black. The event attracted 750 barbers from Ireland, Northern Ireland, UK, Europe and the USA for a (long) afternoon of education, celebration and networking. Presentations included the Menspire Team, Johnny Baba of

Barber Barber, Schorem Barbier, Savills, Andrew Does Hair and Donnie Hawleywood with pop up shops from Reuzel, True Barber Products, Dee Graham tailoring and more. The show paid tribute to inspirational industry icon William Finnegan of Waldorf Barbershop for his dedication and service to barbering. Follow @barbercut and keep your eyes peeled for the next one.

SAM’S WORKS SMART Sam’s Barbers in Dublin has revolutionised the way they do business — and it was easy. Here’s how!

HOW CAN VEND WORK FOR YOU?

S

am’s has been serving the Dublin community since 1901. The five-shop group is now in the care of its fourth generation: brothers Sam and James Donnelly. The two knew that to safeguard their legacy, they needed to future-proof their business — and they found the answer in the cloud with an app called Vend. “Barbers are notoriously bad businessmen. But business everywhere was booming… especially retail, and we wanted to get organised. We’d already been using Resurva for appointments, and they told us to take a look at Vend. I’d spent many months hunting for POS software that didn’t cost a fortune and wasn’t complicated. When I looked at Vend, I could immediately see that it fit perfectly with barbering. It literally took me four hours to train all 10 staff across the two shops where we trialled it, and we’ve never looked back,” says James.

the system for easy payment on checkout. When a customer’s ready to check out, the barber inputs his custom ID, chooses the Vend item (i.e. haircut), and takes the payment. Customers can pay by cash or credit card and add tips using the latter as well. James also worked with Vend to create a unique ‘gift card’ solution that connects to the customer’s mobile phone, allowing him to spend his gift through a Vend code and monitor the positive balance until the gift is spent.

HOW VEND WORKS AT SAM’S BARBERS Vend runs on iPads and creates “items” in its system for individual services and products.

James has even set up Bluetoothenabled cash registers that send information straight to the till, creating a seamless process from start to finish.

When a customer books on Resurva, Vend integrates the booking into

end of the day, the barbers cash up at the push of a button and print a receipt showing cash in for reconciliation. The company also uses Vend for inventory management. When Sam’s sells a product, Vend readjusts the stock levels — and when a store reaches a minimum stock level, Vend automatically emails the supplier with an order. Through Vend, the directors can access, monitor, manage, and analyse their business from anywhere in the world. In fact, James recently found himself adding a stock item for immediate sale from a Dubai beach. (Camel optional!) Furthermore, the Sam’s staff can monitor progress throughout the month to see their own performances and commissions.

HOW TO CREATE IT: 1. Wash your client’s hair, then while it’s wet establish a natural parting and section it using an asymmetric horseshoe. 2. Starting at the temples cut the hair with scissors graduated from long to short and meet both sides at the nape. 3. Connect the top into the graduated back and sides using the guide created. 4. Through the top point cut at a 30 degree angle leaving the side closest to the parting longest and blend the opposite side into the existing guide. 5. Blast dry and create some movement using a pomp brush. 6. Finish off the cut using scissor-over-comb and detailer trimmers. 7. Finally, style with some of The Bluebeards Revenge Matt Paste.

HOW TO CREATE IT: 1. Using the natural parting create an asymmetric horseshoe section and clip it away. 2. Starting at the temple and working back to meet at the nape, put in your blank canvas of a grade two then freehand graduate it in preparation to blend into the top. 3. Put in your shortest grade at the hairline and work through the grades to blend up and through. Then use trimmers and a razor to line up. 4. Release the top and blend it into the sides over directing the top to leave length for the pomp. 5. Dry with a pomp brush and finish with The Bluebeards Revenge Pomade.

HOW TO CREATE IT: 1. Start by establishing a horseshoe section from recession to recession and put in your blank canvas of your longest grade. 2. As a drop fade on the side, establish your guide with your shortest grade dropping down past the occipital at the back of the head. 3. Work your way up through the grades to your longest grade. Line up the edges with trimmers and a blade. 4. Release the top and blend into the side and back. Point cut the top square over directing towards the front to allow for the fringe. 5. Apply a small amount of The Bluebeards Revenge Matt Paste and dry it forward. 6. Give the final detail to the fringe and fade once perfect. 7. Take your trimmers and place your surgical line to follow and enhance the shape of your fade. Finish with The Bluebeards Revenge Matt Paste.

For more fashion looks, add colour through

the parting or through heavier layers or the front hairlines, not an all over colour change that would result in a re-growth. For the more mature client, suggest subtle combing through of the natural colour to minimise the white hair. When selling in colour to your clients, think about the language you’re using. Generally, the older male client will be having colour to tone down the white hair, so terms to use would be colour to ‘blend’ or finely comb through natural colour tones. With the

younger client, you can be more radical with the terminology as they are probably going for a stronger change so for example pre-lightener is well understood and comes across more premium than bleaching. he Wahl Barber of the Year competition is a hot ticket for any finalist and winning means not just the biggest, shiniest cup in the whole of the barbering industry but importantly the mentoring and training provided by Simon Shaw and the Wahl Artistic Team. Andrea’s year started the very next day when she joined the team on stage to demo to the packed crowds. MB caught up with Andrea for an update. MB: HOW DID YOU HEAR ABOUT THE WAHL BARBER OF THE YEAR COMPETITION?

MB: WHAT WAS IT LIKE COMPETING? AR: I was really nervous and the model was keeping me calm. Simon gave us a great pep talk back stage. Initially my hands were shaking really bad but as I got into it I calmed down. I didn’t know the judges would be a foot away but I just concentrated on what I was doing. The time went fast and the model had a beard so 34 / MODERN BARBER MAGAZINE

I was really nervous and the model was keeping me calm. Simon gave us a great pep talk back stage. Initially my hands were shaking really bad but as I got into it I calmed down. I didn’t know the judges would be a foot away but I just concentrated on what I was doing. The time went fast and the model had a beard so I needed to trim and shape that too.

AR: I saw it on FB. Another barber shared a post and so I clicked and found the steps to entry were pretty easy. I thought I would just do it and see how far I got. When I saw my name on a list of finalists I was blown away. I immediately started finding a model that could travel with me, I didn’t want to risk my final on an unknown model. So I asked a regular that has good features and really good hair. His hair is naturally curly but it straightens well. He has very dark hair on a light scalp. I knew it was a risk but when it’s done right that contrast looks great.

THE FINALE, IT FITS MY HAND PERFECTLY AND THE GOLD FOIL IS LESS IRRITATING ON THE SKIN! I needed to trim and shape that too. We all rushed at the end. I couldn’t believe I was on stage competing against barbers that are my idols. When I won it was really strange. I was thinking ‘I’m just a barber from Cork and here I am standing next to Micky Graham!’

MB: WHAT HAVE YOU BEEN UP TO SINCE? AR: All the team and Simon are so supportive and helpful. I’ve learned so much. Just being on stage with them the next day was amazing. I have already run a training seminar with Simon Shaw in Cork at Hennessy Salon Supplies. Simon did his demo first and I learned so much just watching him. He gave me great feedback. Identifying the right numbers can help guide your business decisions and judge what’s working and what’s not. Relying on reports you’ve made previously could help you spot trends worth repeating or avoiding and give you more info on decisions such as planning ahead on staff.
