would rather have their hair above money or friends and seventy percent of British men believe that nothing can be done about their hair loss.” Medications such as Minoxidil and Finasteride will slow the process when caught early but for some men there is just no way back and even surgical intervention may not be a long term solution. There has been a rise in cosmetic solutions in recent years such as scalp micropigmentation. SMP tattoos coloured ink into the scalp to replicate the air follicle, creating a denser fuller look or camouflages hair loss, scars and alopecia. It’s a growing trend that can also be profitable for barbers. Training can be found with companies such as finishingtouchesgroup.com. Tom Beagley-Spicer has a Hair for Men franchise in Hampshire (FB hairformenoverton). He specialises in hair loss and works with a German company that offers ultra-thin hair systems called Total Cover Plus. It’s essentially a breathable hair piece or wig that’s worn continuously for months and Tom is the only trained barber that wears the system too. “I lost my hair in my early twenties and I spent years without any confidence. The Total Cover Plus system was life changing and that’s why I wanted to offer it to my customers. There is a standard system and a bespoke system. I work with the customer to match the density, colour and texture to their existing hair so that it blends perfectly. I can add highlights or even grey streaks and cut as you would a normal head of hair. Once the area of coverage is identified, the system is cut to fit. Any unwanted hair is removed and the head shaved and exfoliated. I apply a bond that is totally natural so there are no adverse effects and then I apply the system. It takes two to three hours and remains in place for 3-5 months and the customer then goes on treating it as they would a natural head of hair. There will be some sun fade and a little hair fall but it looks totally natural. The cost is about £2.5k a year.” Tom has noticed that his customers feel less taboo around hair loss in recent years but he won’t raise it with a client if they don’t do so first. “If I see a customer that could clearly be helped by the Total 14 / WWW.MODERNBARBER.CO.UK

Cover Plus System then I talk about my hair loss journey first. It starts the conversation,” concludes Tom. Find out more at thedude-lab.co.uk. Fine hair and a generalised thinning can be problematic for customers too and Luke Goringe of Milano Barbers (@milanobarbers) in Kingston has a clear plan of attack for dealing with the 60% of his customers that fall into this category. “I always talk to customers openly about these issues so that I can tackle it. For recession lines I blunt cut and then add texture around the back and middle. I don’t use thinning scissors but I point cut and often razor cut at the ends to create texture. I use our own brand salt spray and Redken Volumising Dust at the roots to make the hair look thicker.” When all else fails Luke suggests that customers switch their style focus from the head hair to a magnificent beard!

Handsome barbershop interiors are an essential element of a high impact experience and Industville (www.industville. co.uk) has all the finishing touches. Ruffians should know!
T
he humble barber shop has been elevated to a stylish and luxurious experience and Ruffians is the perfect example. The latest branch of Ruffians, arrived in one of London’s most distinctive and unusual areas – Shoreditch, in August of last year. The interior has a clear nod to the location’s industrial past; previously an abattoir, this quirky venue has been given the full Ruffians treatment. Use of exposed brick and chunky oiled wood gives the space a tough, masculine feel that is elevated through the use of a selection of industrial lighting designs from Industville in brass. The rich golden tones of the brass combined with the traditional shapes add a luxurious elegance to the space.
24 / WWW.MODERNBARBER.CO.UK
Pride of place are two of Industville’s favourite lighting shapes. The classic Brooklyn Antique Flat Industrial Pendant Light is placed above the counter as you walk in. Its design looks to early-20thcentury industrial lighting, retaining the classic lines and exposed hardware of the originals. Illuminating each work station is The Vintage Round Shaped Barn Swan Neck Retro Wall Sconce Lamp inspired by heritage barn lighting designed to showcase the warmth of Edison-style filament bulbs which brings out the beauty of the Ruffians brick and timber design. Each of the elements of the Ruffians interior help support the overall impact and experience. Andrew Cannon, Founder and Director of Ruffians says “Our Ruffians Shoreditch store used to be an abattoir, so we needed to ensure we used detailing that reflected the Ruffians aesthetic as well as giving that traditional, industrial edge. The Industville lighting was exactly what we needed. Our golden wall mounted lights are an eye-catching element of our store with the pendant lights helping complete the look and provide perfect lighting.”

Easydry Barber Towels and Thermal Towels are the best thing to happen to male grooming – I cannot recommend them enough. Easydry towels are ideal for male grooming as they are hygienic, highperforming and cost-effective. They are three times more absorbent than cotton and are the best towels for barbers in my opinion. Quarterly Update
S
ummer is here, finally! I love the summer months, late nights, beer gardens, BBQ’s… No time to enjoy that though, as it’s all go at Wahl. Seven months into the year and the Wahl Artistic Team have already been abroad over 20 times with another 20-30 tours planned, so it’s only right we give this month’s ‘A Shaw Thing’ the “We are global, not local” treatment.
One final note: I should have announced this weeks ago, but you know me, I’ve never been one for all the fanfare and hype but I am delighted to announce my new position as Wahl’s Global Artistic Director. Not bad for a welders son from Barnsley!
My first shout this month goes to all you up and coming teams providing a blast from the past wearing shades on stage and getting the audience to chant your name. Top draw, love it! Second shout out is for James ‘Jim the Trim’ Williams and the amazing work he is doing to raise awareness of the difficulties in dealing with autistic children’s haircuts. I have also opted for current men’s hairdresser of the year, Marcus King, as my featured stylist for this issue. MARCUS KING’S WINNING LOOK

his past few months saw the Wahl Artistic Team embark on barbering tours to India, Denmark, Poland, Italy, Slovenia and Finland. Most intriguing of all was the two weeks Michael Damiano spent educating in China. Michael was regularly commanding classes of over 60 people, which demonstrates the huge demand for the Wahl Artistic Team’s skills and knowledge. Michael: “China was a great experience; the people were so enthusiastic about everything. The main thing I noticed was that barbering is still quite alien out there, with salons dominating and very few barbershops. Shanghai has over 30 million people and only five shops! It’s refreshing to see the barbering trade ‘like new’ and judging by the passion and

I also learned to use chopsticks, which might explain the weight loss. I loved every minute and can’t wait to visit again and see how the industry has developed.” Whilst the food may have been a bit dubious at times (fried chicken heads, anyone?), there is no doubting the passion and talent of the Asian barbers. Our cultures may be different but the ethos remains the same; commitment to the barbering craft, pushing boundaries and always looking to improve and innovate.

MR. ASHTON JOSEPH We recently took some time out to catch up with MR. Barbers very own ‘young barber of the year’ – Ashton Joseph. We discussed his past experience as a barber and the secrets behind how he broke into the industry so quickly. Ashton also shares with us some useful tips and tricks and advice to fellow up and coming barbers starting a new career in the industry.
Tell us a little about yourself Ashton. My name is Ashton Joseph, I'm 19 years old and I work and manage the MR.Barbers Braintree barbershop. Whilst all the other kids we’re into football and playing sports my passion has always been for barbering from a young age. I like to go out and socialise with my friends at the weekend but throughout the week hair is all I think about. I’m quite into my fashion and I think that's why I like to keep up with the latest hairstyles in the barber shop to keep my customers happy and be able to give them the look they want. What’s your Past Experience in Barbering? My past experiences in barbering have been very hard and extremely stressful. Being told your not good enough and you wouldn't be able to make a living out of just doing men's hair is the hardest thing to try and accept. But proving people wrong is one of the biggest achievements for myself considering it was only me who could make those changes and choose what I wanted for my future. MR.Barbers have helped me acheive this over the years and I now manage my own MR. shop in Braintree, Essex. How many years have you been a barber? I've been a barber for 5 and a half years now. How did you get into barbering at such a young age and progress so quickly? At 13 I didn't attend school that much and didn't have my mind set to do well, so when things always got bad I would turn to my auntie Faye who has been a hairdresser most of her life. Are you a Barber? For Jobs & Careers@
After realising my grades weren't going to turn out too good I asked my auntie for a job and she gave me a trial for a week. After spending 7 days with the most amazing people I then realised this is what I wanted to do but I didn't want to do women's hair, it was only men's hair I wanted to be involved with, which is when I discovered barbering! Did you study anywhere? I went to Jet Hairdressing Academy to get my level 1 & 2 because they also did barbering there. I also had a lot of help from Harry and Rhys Green along the way and they both made me into a stronger, smarter and all round better barber. Having won the 'MR.Barbers 'Young barber of the year' award, what do you plan for your future in barbering? In the future I hope to have as many busy successful MR.Barbers shops as possible, I already run MR. Braintree and I'm now trying to open up a MR.Barbers Witham. I would like to become a teacher so that I can teach young apprentices so they to have a bright future for themselves. Any tips or advice you can give to any up and coming barbers who are trying to progress in the industry? Put your heart and soul into every cut that you do. Some may say it's just a haircut but to me the first 2 years it's them first haircuts that depend on your future. Being a barber can be fun, it's not work at all, it's a hobby and if you should enjoy what you do. Stay humble and don't run before you can walk and let the haircut speak for itself! - Ashton Joseph - MR.Barbers

TIPS
BEARD COLOUR BLENDING
Hannah Griggs is owner of Taylor Made Grooming (@TMmensgrooming/@ taylormademensgrooming) and educator at the Great British Barbering Academy (@ gbbarberingacademy). Here Hannah shows her beard colour blending services…
H
annah charges around £10 for her beard colour blending service and has approximately eight customers a week who return every three weeks. Those beards grow fast! Hannah says “A lot of my clients want a beard but they haven’t got the coverage. Natural colour brings out a lot of fine hair and makes it look thicker and defined.” 1. Make sure you have assessed the customer’s skin and beard for contraindications. Hannah uses American Crew Grey Coverage. It’s low peroxide but always skin test and allow to process according manufacturer’s instructions. 34 / WWW.MODERNBARBER.CO.UK
Always apply tint before lining out the beard, you don’t want to apply tint to any nicks or shaved skin. Use a tint brush and apply the colour working down from the cheekbone. For longer beards, comb through. Allow to process for 5-10 minutes. It’s really easy to judge the depth of colour, just keep an eye on it. Ask the customer to wash their beard themselves using a cleansing face wash and then dry.
Check the colour is even and to the depth required. Line out the beard for a sharp, neat finish on the cheeks and neck. “It’s a quick and easy service that gets a great result, in my shop the apprentices often do it,” adds Hannah. Thanks Hannah!

TIPS
TOP TIPS HOW TO…CREATE A STAND OUT BUSINESS AWARDS ENTRY. The NHF (nhf.info) is a membership trade association that supports sole traders and employers in the hair industry. To celebrate the many successes in the industry the NHF is launching their own business awards. Here’s their tips on creating an entry that will help you stand out from the crowd… • Show evidence. A good way to show tangible results is to include client testimonials, statistics, charts and graphs, relevant awards you may have won in the past and any media coverage.
• Read (and answer) the question. Ensure you understand what is expected from your entry. Then tailor your answer very specifically to that, not to what you want the judges to hear.
• Involve your clients. Ask your clients what it is they love about your business, service and team to demonstrate how your methods are a success but do remember to obtain your client’s consent. • Be honest. While your aim is to present your business in the best possible light, always be
honest. Wild exaggeration might end up in embarrassment further along the process. • Create a strong first impression. Typos and grammatical errors create a poor impression so check, check and check again. You should also avoid jargon and use bullet points to aid the judges and stick to the stated word count. • Keep a copy for yourself. Save a copy of your entry for future awards applications. Even if you are not successful, you can build on what you have written to provide a great analysis of your barbershop. • Watch those dates. Make a note of important dates and deadlines. This includes the closing date for entries, the announcement of finalists, and of course, the date of the award event itself. Put your award entry skills to the test by entering the NHF’s Business Awards (closing date for entries 28 July 2017). The Awards are free to enter and open to NHF members and non-members. ‘Invited to jump aboard The Mallard on the East Coast Mainline. Taking part in speed testing for a world record attempt. What a marvel of aerodynamic locomotive engineering. She can top 120mph! This might explain why my favourite fedora disappeared somewhere around Grantham. Luckily, a swift application of my very own Pomade restored my dignity...’ For more details on these iconic products visit denmanpro.com
