The Lion’s Barber Collective. His idea was to unite his love of motorcycles and barbering and do something for the greater good. He decided to organise a charity motorcycle ride from Dundee to London in five days with a barbering seminar at every stop. He rallied support from brand sponsors including Captain Fawcett, Reuzel, Rockstar Energy Drinks and Harley Davidson UK and a whole lot of barbers and friends and set up a Just Giving page to make donations easy. He convinced eleven other bikers to saddle up during a wet cold July. He invited more barbering educators along the way, including the team at SB Barbering Academy, Tom Chapman and Frank Rimer to deliver seminars to approximately 50 attendees every night. Sponsorship, tickets and donations takes the current total to £10,335. The tour started at Hard Grind in Dundee, stopping at SB Barbering Academy in Sunderland, Robin Hood Harley Davidson in Nottingham, Captain Fawcett’s HQ in Kings Lynn and finally The Bike Shed in Shoreditch London. Colin says “We couldn’t have done it without the amazing support we got and we already have plans for next year’s ride. Hopefully Barbersride will be bigger and better for 2018.” Anyone interested in either participating or supporting this amazing event should register their interest at barbersride.com.

Autism Barbers Assemble on screen
J
ames Williams (@jim_jimthetrim_williams) the founder of Autism Barbers Assemble has been making headway for his autism support group and has caught the attention of production companies and Channel 4. James is participating in the opening episode of ‘Let Me In’ a short documentary series that has already been nominated for the Diversity Award at the Royal Television Society Awards. The Awards night is at the end of November and we’ll keep our eyes peeled for the on-air date! James also took to the stage at the recent British Master Barbers LIVE event with an industry first, discussing autism and demonstrating his skill by cutting hair for Duncan, an autistic client. It was a great sense of accomplishment for both Duncan and James!

he oval face shape is often thought of as the perfect face shape. It’s extremely versatile and that makes it great for trying different hairstyles, facial hair trends and sunglasses. An oval face is normally well-proportioned and symmetrical, making the man more attractive. With an oval face you want to avoid a fringe on your forehead, this will make your head appear shorter and rounder. Instead, look to take your hair up and create some volume.

n oblong face is generally going to be the tallest shape with a boxy feel. You should avoid taking the sides too short if you’re keeping volume of the top, this will make your face even longer than it is. Instead, try a fringe that will make your face appear shorter or keep a style that is well-proportioned and doesn’t have too much length on top or too little on the sides.

he diamond face shape is characterised by a narrowjawline and forehead, with width in the cheeks. With a diamond face shape you want to create width at your forehead, therefore you want to keep some length on the top and on the sides. Fringes work well to add weight to your forehead and keeping it long on top can help to balance out your face shape and make it less obvious.
R
ound face shapes are where there are no obvious lines or angles on your face, leaving a perfect circle shape. The ideal haircut will add some definition to your face and lengthen it out. To do this, you want to ensure that you have volume on the top and shorter sides. Shaving the sides high in an undercut or high fade will add some definition, whilst the longer hair on top will add volume and lengthen your face shape.

he square face shape is traditionally masculine, it has defined angles and is wide at all points. It’s a great foundation and extremely versatile, but most men will want to soften it out. Square faces are balanced with a little length on top and a haircut that isn’t too defined. Classic styles like a side part or a crew cut are great choices because they round your face out and don’t offer an extra definition.

Co-founders Karl Foster and Sam Prior bulk buy VIP tickets and then offer them at the price of a regular ticket for customers and staff. There’s a private bar, food and bags of family spirit. Ahead of the event they run competitions in-house and on their social media and one lucky client won two tickets and betting readies of £100 cash. Sam says “It’s a chance to relax with customers and staff, plus it’s a little thank you to customers and an opportunity to reward
staff. The race day was really brilliant. We had about a hundred and fifty attendees which included forty team members and we won quite a lot of money between us. Everyone seemed to be up on the day and one guy won £800!” MR don’t limit their events to the races they are always up to something – VIP football events like the Star Sixes and charity darts - but they keep them all in the family! BIG SHOT Sam Wall used a #hashtag to get himself all the way to the finals of a US hair competition, here’s what happened…

am Wall of Hidden Heights Studio in Newcastle frequently collaborates with photographers to capture his hair work. Skipping through Instagram one day Sam spotted a US competition and decided to enter. “I saw that Behind the Chair 36 / WWW.MODERNBARBER.CO.UK

magazine was running a competition called #BIGSHOT which is part of their #ONESHOT awards. All you had to do to enter was post a pic and hashtag BIGSHOT. I had created an image for the American Crew All Star Challenge competition and it was one of my favourites so it took seconds to choose, post and enter, then I forgot all about it. A month later I was at a mate’s party and I got an email to say I had finalised!” explains Sam. US hair magazine Behind the Chair @behindthechair_com Awards and weekend conference in Austin, Texas on August 19th – 22nd is a pretty huge affair. It attracts thousands of hair professionals from all over the world
and this year Sam Wall was one of them. After an excruciating 30 hour journey Sam hit Austin on Thursday 17th August.

As part of the American Crew Elite Team, Sam was asked to be involved with product testing of the new American Crew Tech Series. He submitted a full presentation including, feedback, images and ‘how-to’s’ and was rewarded with an invitation to present models at the internal launch at Revlon’s London HQ. Sam says “I really enjoyed the process. I created three styles. One where I put product in wet hair and blow dried it. One where I put it into wet hair and left it to dry and one where I dried the hair and put the product on dry hair.
