MODERN ARTIST:

THE iDENTiTY CRiSiS by jay kana | photo courtesy of neil nofuente Mississauga’s incredibly talented Paul Castro, who goes by the moniker “THE iDENTiTY CRiSiS” has spent nearly 30 years involved in music and with that, comes a lengthy list of talents. He’s a proficient multi-instrumentalist, musician, producer, songwriter, rapper, singer, performer, videographer and documentary maker. He started piano lessons at 11 at Walters Music, where he eventually ended up teaching for several years. There wasn’t an immediate spark to the lessons but Castro persevered and learned to appreciate them. Throughout high school, music continued to be a driving force. He was an active member in the concert band, jazz band, vocal band and outside of school, a rock band or two. It was through this immersion in music that he learned the importance of production and songwriting, which he’s carried throughout his career. His early influences leant towards rock and hip-hop and enjoyed blending multiple genres of music to create something unique to him. Furthermore, he would actively search for music that wasn’t mainstream and spent time with like-minded people. Castro says “I would seek music that was off the grid and different from what was popular." After three years at York University towards his Bachelor of Fine Arts, Castro decided to change gears and record his 16 track debut, multi-genred album “Record Of The Year”, released in 2007. In what became an on-going theme, he wrote and produced the record and performed all the instrumentation himself. There were dozens of performances to support the album, which was a catapult towards launching his career. Fast-forward to late 2009 and Castro released his sophomore, nine-track album called “Breakfast With A Psychopath” that saw further refinement of his producing and songwriting skills. It was after his third album in late 2011, “I Hate The F Word” that saw this local talent really take leaps forward. He toured with a band he grew up listening to, Grammy nominated Nashville band GRITS, both as part of their band (guitarist and backup rapper) and he was given a set to perform his original music. That led to him getting credits on productions with Mark Wahlberg, RZA (Wu-Tang Clan), Tyler Connolly (Theory Of A Deadman), Finger Eleven, Ricky Tillo (Lady Gaga) and Superwoman (Lilly Singh) and others. As Castro built an impressive resume, he was focusing on the production side, with a downshift in original material.

In early 2016, he chose a reduced role in music until mid2017, citing “I had the self-realization that I just wasn’t into it as much as I needed to be; I needed to recharge.” There were still collaborations with Grammy winner “King George”, Mississauga’s super group “From Far & Wide” and earned Best Pop Artist at the 2017 Mississauga Music Awards. The reinvigorated Castro is releasing a 10 year deluxe anniversary version of his debut album, in 2017; he’s releasing a series of mini documentaries spotlighting local talents that inspire him and releasing new music. He advises aspiring musicians and producers to “learn music, theory and different instruments…maintain the vision you had as to why you initially fell in love with music. Talented producers find balance in the artist and know how to spotlight their strengths to bring out their absolute best.” It’s been an interesting, exciting and insightful path for Castro and he sums up his journey as this:

“Music is a gift that I’m fortunate to have and I feel that I have to share it with the world, for better or for worse and everything in between.”

THE MISSISSAUGA SYMPHONY

ORCHESTRA & YOUTH ORCHESTRA The Mississauga Symphony Orchestra has offered the residents of Mississauga entertaining programming from classical and popular repertoires of symphonic music since 1972. The MSO has grown significantly in membership and profile, and is designated by the City as one of Mississauga's six pillar organizations of arts, culture and heritage. With the inclusion of the Mississauga Symphony Youth Orchestra in 2013, the organization has become the centre of classical music in Mississauga, built around music education, performance and entertainment. An MSO concert season is divided into four categories: Masterworks, concerts dedicated to repertoire from the heart of symphonic music; Holiday, concerts dedicated to traditional and family-oriented Christmas music; Pops, concerts dedicated

to film scores and pop stars; and MSYO, concerts featuring the MSO’s vibrant youth orchestra. All MSO concerts are performed in Hammerson Hall, a world-class theatre located in the Living Arts Centre. Founded in 2013, the Mississauga Symphony Youth Orchestra has become a success story of its own. Beginning with 60 musicians and two ensembles, the MSYO has quickly grown to 140 musicians and three ensembles, making it one of the fastest growing orchestras in Canada, and dispelling the myth that classical music is declining in popularity with a younger demographic. Thanks to the support of the Living Arts Centre, the MSO and MSYO are able to provide rehearsal and performance opportunities within world-class facilities.

In a grand tribute to two revolutionary Jazz artists, Oscar Peterson and Oliver Jones, the Living Arts Centre is hosting “Oscar Peterson & Oliver Jones: A Celebration” on December 9, 2017 at 7:30pm, during which Oliver Jones will be receiving the first-ever Living Arts Centre Excellence in The Arts Award. “Without question, this evening represents as well the finest assembling of jazz talent ever on the main stage at the Living Arts Centre,” says Living Arts Centre CEO Natalie Lue. It’s the crowning event of Canada's 150th Birthday and our own 20th anniversary here at the LAC, one that will give us creative momentum as we move into our third decade of presenting quality entertainment[…] We’d especially like to thank our presenting sponsor, Pratt & Whitney, for their support which is making this magical evening possible.” Curated and produced by Frank Francis of Caliban Arts Theatre with musical direction by Ron Westray, any jazz enthusiast is sure to recognize the illustrious musicians in the lineup. Piano luminaries include jazz icon Monty Alexander (Harlem Kingston Express; Dizzy Gillespie, Quincy Jones), JUNO and Emmy Award winner D.D. Jackson, Montreal Jazz Festival Grand Jazz Award-winner Robi Botos, and Marc Cary (Betty Carter, Roy Hargrove). Other esteemed musicians include world renowned Canadian vocalist Dione Taylor, Grammy-winning saxophonist Casey Benjamin (Robert Glasper Experiment, Stephon Harris), Juno-winning bassist Brandi Disterheft (Michael Kaeshammer), percussionist/drummer Kahil El’Zabar (Ethnic Heritage Ensemble) and Jamaaladeen Tacuma (Ornette Coleman, Jukebox). Don’t miss out! To purchase tickets for “Oscar Peterson & Oliver Jones: A Celebration” on December 9, 2017, go to www.livingartscentre.ca or call the Box Office at 905-306-6000.

COMPETITION IS NOT JUST FOR SPORTS ENTHUSIASTS

by kimberley langen, CEO & co-founder, Spirit of Math Schools ®

“…and pencils down.” The contest is over. The room erupts with excited chatter. In the large hall, over 200 students from grades 3 to 12 have just completed writing one of Canada’s largest series of mathematics contests. These Spirit of Math students have opted to miss a morning of school just for the opportunity to compete in something they can get excited about – math. So many programs out there simply show students the answers to the questions or teach them how to calculate quickly in their heads. How many programs look at all the problems, determine the skill sets that are needed to solve them, and teach according to those skill sets? Are they effectively developing logical thinking and critical analysis skills so that multitudes of mathematical ideas and questions can be tackled? Knowing how to do this takes an unusual expertise, and has been perfected over the course of more than 25 years in the Spirit of Math program. The results of this method of teaching are outstanding.

With close to 900 placements on national mathematics honour rolls this year alone – an outstanding feat – Spirit of Math makes a great case for not just teaching to the test. From doctors to physicists to engineers, Spirit of Math alumni are changing the world as leaders in their communities. Although the foundational concepts of the Spirit of Math program are being taught in several prestigious private schools, including University of Toronto Schools and Crescent School, Spirit of Math is also offered to students in an after-school setting. Students studying with Spirit of Math, taking just one class a week, are propelled far beyond most parents’ expectations. In one parent’s words: “Just by sending my son to Spirit of Math once a week, his thinking has boosted him far above other students in his day school. I can’t believe what he can do.” Kimberley Langen is the CEO and Co-Founder of Spirit of Math® Schools. CELEBRATING VAM40! by annis karpenko, executive director visual arts mississauga

Since 1978, Visual Arts Mississauga (VAM) has been inviting artists from across Ontario to submit their best work to a creative competition. On January 11, 2018, VAM will open its 40th Juried Show of Fine Arts, an annual art event made even more prestigious by our host for the past 30 years – the Art Gallery of Mississauga (AGM). I always say that art making is an act of courage. The painter or sculptor stands before a blank canvas or a pile of material and contemplates his or her first move. The first move is the one that takes the most courage it is the first step on a journey of discovery. As the work begins to emerge, so too does a new understanding of oneself as an artist situated firmly in this place and this time. Creating is a deeply intimate undertaking and it takes a gutsy spirit to share it with the world; to put it out in the open space where it will be judged and scrutinized and criticized. In this juried exhibition, a panel of experts come together to choose 40 selected works from a field of 200. The competition for inclusion is great and being selected will give an artist exposure in a highly regarded space and a chance at a prize. The artist’s work is suddenly “advanced to a high degree of importance.”* Each year VAM selects a panel which includes an academic, a curator and an artist and this year’s panelists are visual arts instructor John C. Armstrong from Sheridan College; curator, Jayne Wilkinson

from Blackwood Gallery and Toronto artist, Faisal Anwar. When reviewing the digital submissions jurors do not know the names of the artists. They look for excellence in technique but also interesting form, colour, texture and subject matter. Once the work is hung by AGM Curator Kendra Ainsworth, viewers are guaranteed a special art adventure. Last year’s month-long exhibition welcomed over 1600 guests! Artist and Buddhist John Cage said, “I never say I like or dislike something. I say ‘that does not interest me.” The creative output of any particular artist when put on public display will either pique your interest - invite you to look further into the piece - the artist’s life - or it won’t and that is fine. Viewing a piece of art should never be about getting it or liking it – it should be about being moved by it. As a viewer, when you move into the space between you and the work, you are inhabiting a space where the artist once paced – back and forth – panning in and out to see the emergence of their creative muse come to life in form, colour, texture and light. I hope you will join us on January 11th for the Opening Reception of VAM40 at the Art Gallery of Mississauga. And if you want to know why the jurors chose the final works they did, join us at the Walk the Talk event during the run of the exhibition. Stay tuned for date and time details!

P ORTER AIRLINES: STRAIGHT TO MELBOURNE, FL by jay kana

Canadians have been flocking to Florida over winter months for decades to exchange the crisp cold for southern sunshine. There’s an unplucked gem about 100 km southeast of Orlando that’s on the verge of becoming a very popular alternative for visitors north of the 49th parallel. Melbourne, Florida, aka the Space Coast, is quaint and charming, serving up over 72 miles of Atlantic-side of beachfront, which are the closest to the Orlando area at only an hour away. I experienced the family-friendly Sebastian Inlet State Park, which is home to over 3,000 species of wildlife. Whether you’re camping, RV-ing or spending the day, it’s a must-visit site. I spent over three hours kayaking and experienced a pod of dolphins that were frolicking 15 feet away, jumping fish and the sense of serenity on the water rivals that of Northern Ontario. Disney is 80 minutes away if you’re looking to don your Mickey Ears and experience one of the world’s most famous attractions. A big plus is that you can avoid the hustle and bustle of Orlando via Melbourne, yet be close enough to keep your family’s needs and wants met. Of course, with their moniker being “The Space Coast” you’ll have to spend a few hours at the majestic, seven-storey Exploration Tower at Port Canaveral. Enjoy gorgeous coastal views over two observation decks and learn about their history and engage in interactive displays. For lodging, I highly recommend taking a load off at the Windemere Inn By the Sea. Picturesque and comfortable rooms paired with exquisite

customer service and unmistakable southern charm are just a few of their highlights. Now that I’ve sold you on the destination, let’s chat about the oh-so-easy journey. My first experience with Porter Airlines was in October as part of this adventure. I live near YYZ and have always gone there opposed to Mr.Bishop’s joint. Surprisingly, it’s only a 30-ish minute drive to Porter from Canada’s best city and the service levels, comfort and atmosphere were absolutely astounding. From complimentary snacks and drinks, a comfortable waiting area and a breezy (yet secure) check in and boarding process, Porter certainly has this comfortable flying thing nailed down. Even the new tunnel is an engineering marvel! Flying redefined, indeed, Porter. Once you enjoy the 3-ish hour direct flight (not a typo) from Toronto to Orlando Melbourne International Airport (MLB) that’s offered from December to March, you’ll be greeted with short lines, which is what everyone wants after any flight, right? They’ve nearly wrapped up a multi-million dollar renovation that’ll put an exclamation mark on an already great service. I’m nearly at my word count so I’ll wrap it up with this: To learn more about Melbourne and plan your trip with family and/or friends (or me!) visit: flyporter.com | visitspacecoast.com | mlbair.com

adventures in paradise

Jamaica is a playground in paradise. While most people choose to vacation here for the beaches and resorts, as an island destination, Jamaica has so much more to offer. Tons of activities and places to explore await the adventurous. And with both WestJet and Air Canada offering multiple non-stop flights daily, you can start your fun in the sun in about four hours. From the Blue Mountains to the waterfalls to the rainforests, adventure awaits those who seek a more active vacation. Here are five of our favorite ways to have your next adventure on Jamaica.

Blue Mountain Bike Tour

These tours are perfect for those who love adventure and coffee! While there are many tours to choose from, we suggest the one from Ocho Rios, which includes a beautiful downhill ride with spectacular views and brunch served with Blue Mountain coffee. Then, wrap up the tour with a cool dip in a secluded waterfall.

Lunch is served riverside and afterwards, you can enjoy some relaxation, hit the water slide, or hang out at the waterfalls. Cranbrook Rain Forest Gardens offers similar adventures, but you can also choose activities such as thrilling cliff jumping and horseback riding. Just imagine galloping along the crystal blue Caribbean and arriving on a white sand beach, where you continue to ride to cool down your horse in the clear waters. We did say Jamaica is a playground in paradise.

Chukka Adventures

Resorts these days offer a multitude of activities to keep their guests happy and entertained, both onsite and off. Jamaican resorts are no different. Most recently, we stayed at the Moon Palace in Ocho Rios, which offers a ton of activities for the adventure lover. While you will find all the traditional water activities, including

The Rastafari Indigenous Village is a unique experience to Jamaica, so should not be missed. Considered a religion, Rastafari is also a way of life in Jamaica where it began and is deeply rooted in its people. Visiting the village will give you a true understanding of this culture. Upon entering the grounds, you will be greeted and invited to cross the river by foot and take a beautiful short hike to the village. Once there, you will have the opportunity to enjoy organic foods from their gardens, listen to drumming and a music session in their sacred space, and see some practiced trades. As they say, you will “full joy this experience. Offering activities all over Jamaica, we have enjoyed many Chukka Adventures over the years. THE ARTS

Mississauga embraces and there’s plenty in town to pick from this Christmas season. The Living Arts Centre plays host to a variety of numerous performances year-round that are worth checking out. Also, the Mississauga Symphony Orchestra performs here and we highly encourage you to take in a show or few! Visual Arts Mississauga is a local gem that offers wonderful programs for anyone, regardless of experience… try out their popular Magic Monday class. The newest addition to the art scene is Pixie Blue Studio, where you can buy art and or rent out the inspiring space in Port Credit’s east village. They also offer workshops, art classes, paint nights, film photography, dance and wellness sessions, all at an affordable price. Also in Port Credit’s east village is Pazan Gallery, a home to beautiful artwork in varying styles, an array of framing options for your artwork and most impressively to us; they do remarkable photo restoration work. We’ve seen first-hand a photograph that was decades old and tattered restored into something that looks like it was photographed today, all thanks to the precision work at Pazan Gallery. Wrapping up our list is the Art Gallery of Mississauga, where a membership is absolutely worth it, along with the available prints, posters and publications they offer for sale.

TECHNOLOGY

On the side, the FitBit Alta HR tracks all your essentials automatically, is sleek with great battery life and is the best version out there. With digital photography continuously booming, up your photo game with the Canon EOS Rebel T7i/800D DSLR. With years of popularity supporting it along with relative affordability, this is a solid option. Sony’s Alpha A6000 comes in at about half the price yet still a good choice for the budding (or existing) photographer. It’s one of the better mirrorless cameras that captures 24.3MP images, full HD video and its DSLR functionality won’t let you down. For you smartphone photographers, the Olloclip 4-in-1 lens set includes fisheye, wide-angle, macro 10x and 15x lenses, which is great for social media shots. Best of all, it’s under $100!

FOOD

options this Christmas? Fancying some fun The Wilcox serves up delicious gastropub fare, creative drinks and an inviting atmosphere that’s worthy of at least monthly visits. One of the best (and our absolute favourite!) Italian restaurant is Mondello’s , located in the heart of Streetsville. Their consistent dedication to impressive, authentic food and superb service is admirable. For your sweet-side, head to Mississauga’s best bakery, Kate’s Town Talk Bakery (also in Streetsville) for the best butter tarts, cakes, pies, cookies.. you get the point. We always buy a dozen cookies but only 8 actually make it through our 10 minute drive home from the bakery. Love authentic Indian food? Indian Cuisine By The Lake is our favourite spot in the city thanks to their mouthwatering menu items. Pop in for their lunch buffet for a real treat!

HARD TO BUY FOR

For the person that’s , Streetsville Treasures is home to a wide variety of vintage inspired memorabilia, home décor items, fashion items and a ton of other cool items. Almost everyone loves fresh flowers as they’re great for any occasion, including Christmas! Our favourite florist in our city is Stavebank Florist, where owner Mona pairs extraordinary arrangements with years of experience and very happy clients.

CLOTHING

wise, we absolutely love the Blundstone line of boots. For the guys, we suggest the “Original” series. They’re relaxed, stylish and durable. The “Women’s” series is light, comfortable and quite versatile. We’ve heard rave reviews from everyone we’ve spoken with who owns them so naturally, we picked up a pair for the winter. CHAD'S SAVOURY CHRISTMAS LOAF

by john murray lewis What does the Holiday Season mean to you? For me, the Holidays are synonymous with two things: the birth of our Lord and Saviour (Finnish keyboard player Tuomas Holopainen) and my Nana's Savoury Christmas Loaf. Ah, the smell of peppermint and boiled ham wafting through the house... The sonorous notes of the loaf-thumping dirge echoing through the neighbourhood at the crack of dawn... That first succulent bite fresh from the oven. Isn't it amazing how memories of food are always the strongest and sweetest? Ever since the first Christmas over 5000 years ago, people have been enjoying loaves. For many families, it's a tradition eclipsed

BRANDED Marketing & Promo Inc

‘Tis the Season for Corporate and Employee Gifts

only by the giving of gifts and the hanging of mistletoe on the ear of the least-favourite child. Hey, hey! What are you doing? Why would you skip over all this totally engrossing context and personal reflection? What's that? You're just here for the... recipe? Oh, you mean the ingredients, step-by-step instructions, and helpful photographs? Ha, good one! As if anyone could enjoy this food-themed vanity content without a long-winded and self-indulgent preamble. OK, where was I? Oh, that's right. Christmas morning, 1998. The last time Nana ever made her mouth-watering loaf. Maybe it was the cataracts, maybe it was the hazardous amount of mace she used in everything she cooked, but her eyes were never the same after that. Since then I've tried countless Christmas loaves, but nothing ever matched Nana's. Until now. Word of advice: when a wandering Romanian minstrel and his uncanny dog Chad offer to teach you their Savoury Christmas Loaf recipe from beneath a park bench in the middle of the night, you drop to your hands and knees and GET. BENEATH. THAT. BENCH. The recipe is so simple, so easy, so timeless... I can't believe it took me so long to find it! It's a little spicy, a little sweet; chunky in all the right places, unnaturally smooth everywhere else. Can I come right out and say it? This Christmas Loaf has CHANGED MY LIFE and I GUARANTEE it will change yours too. And all it takes is 26 artisanal ingredients sourced from specialty butcher shops, vegan grocers, and fermented herring mercantiles. It's hearty, filling, decadent, delicious... and packs more than 8 times a human being's daily recommended protein intake! You'll love how it sticks to your belly and colon for weeks. So let me ask you just one question: Are you ready to bring the Happy back to the Holidays? Let's get to it! ...Oops. Out of space. Well, at least we covered the important stuff!

by jay kana Entering its 10th generation, the 2018 Honda Accord continues its reign as the benchmark for mid-sized sedans. Combining sleek styling, an attractive interior, tons of technology with smaller yet strong engine choices, the Accord breathes life into a shrinking segment. This is also the first Accord to be built in Canada opposed to Japan in the Accord’s 41 year history and after spending a few days in Jasper, AB there’s plenty to love about it. APPEARANCE Fully redesigned for 2018, the Accord sports a sleek, modern exterior that maintains its traditions of being styled with a balance of conservatism and elegance. There’s a “fastback” styling to the rear with a sharper slope than the outgoing model, which gives it a certain upper-class and look and feel. LED lights bookend the vehicle and thanks to new design technology, the roof and body panels have cleaner connection. Overall, Honda has done terrific work in providing a beautiful exterior in the new Accord.

24 MODERN MISSISSAUGA | HOLIDAY 2017

ENGINE One of the largest changes in the 2018 Accord is what you feel opposed to see. Doing more with less is the theme here and the application is that all models will come with either a 1.5L or 2.0L turbocharged, 4-cylinder engine, opposed to the outgoing 6-cylinder engines. The 1.5L powerplant kicks out a healthy 192 horsepower and matching 192 lb-ft. of torque with very little lag and expect it to be the engine most consumers choose. Fancy a bit more friskiness beneath your right foot? The 2.0L engine (borrowed and tuned from the ravishing Type-R Civic) elevates you to an impressive 252 horsepower and 273 lb-ft. of torque, which adds an exclamation mark to the already notable Accord. The best part? Both engines run off good ol’ 87 octane fuel. Also, if you opt for the 2.0L engine, you’ll enjoy a 10-speed automatic gearbox or a silky smooth 6-speed manual box. Fuel economy averages out in the mid 7’s for the autobox and high 7’s for the DIY manual method. DRIVING On the road, the smooth shifting Accord is responsive both from a dead stop and well into the mid-range of driving. Passing isn’t

2018 HONDA ACCORD an issue but you will hear a bit of engine noise as the RPM’s climb as you safely maneuver through the windy roads of Jasper or through the backroads of Milton and most everything in between. Cornering and handling score well here with a lower center of gravity there’s a high level of responsiveness to whatever it is you direct the Accord to do. INTERIOR Starting off with very comfortable heated front seats and a very clean layout, every 2018 Accord driver will also enjoy Honda’s Sensing safety technology ( adaptive cruise control, forward-collision warning, lane-keep assist, traffic recognition) a 12-way power seats, Apple CarPlay & Android Auto, sunroof, a large 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system (yes, there’s a volume knob!) and a backup camera. The large 7-inch screen on the dashboard is easy to scroll through and provides a plethora of information and trunk space chimes in at a useful 473 litres. Navigation comes on the higher trims but with a smartphone, you’ll be just fine. After nearly 7 hours of driving in one day inside the Accord (I happily shared driving duty with Jim Kenzie) I’ll give my stamp of approval towards the Accord being “road-trip” ready. There spacious cabin offers great levels of comfort, the ride quality is quite smooth and road noise is at a minimum at cruising speeds. OVERALL With everything that’s been done to improve the2018 Accord, the folks at Honda are taking a smart and strategic step towards increasing market share by offering a stellar product priced between the mid$20K’s and the high $30K mark. As the drive towards SUV’s and crossovers continue to accelerate, not everyone wants/needs one. And for those who prefer the mid-sized sedan market, Honda’s got a sensible, stylish and safe option. As they close in on the million Accords sold mark, Honda will reach that mark in part thanks to this striking Accord.

RECENT CHANGES IN ONTARIO

REGARDING THE REAL ESTATE MARKET by sam mcdadi There have been three recent changes regarding the real estate market in Ontario that I want to address here. Firstly, there was Ontario’s Foreign Home Buyer Tax that began in April, next came the Rental Fairness Act in May, and lastly a new mortgage stress test will begin in January. Ontario introduced a Foreign Home Buyer Tax in April as a means to rein in the housing market, particularly in the Greater Toronto Area. Often referred to as a foreign home buyer tax, the NRST is a 15% tax that applies to the purchase or acquisition of an interest in residential real property located in the Greater Golden Horseshoe (GGH) area by an individual, foreign corporation, or “taxable trustee”. The tax applies to real property located in Brant, Dufferin, Durham, Haldimand, Halton, Hamilton, Kawartha Lakes, Niagara, Northumberland, Peel, Peterborough, Simcoe, Toronto, Waterloo, Wellington, and York. The next month, in a step to support renters with rent stability and some measure of protection for rental rights, Ontario passed the Rental Fairness Act, 2017. The Rental Fairness Act includes a number of items, namely no rent increases

for any residential rental unit to exceed the provincially legislated annual maximum of 1.5 per cent for 2017, and a standard lease to help both tenants and landlords know their rights and responsibilities. The last recent change is in regards to mortgages for home owners. Starting in January 1, 2018, Canadians won’t be able to qualify for as large of a mortgage. This new “mortgage stress test” will effectively reduce the size of the mortgage Canadians are able to take on. Canada’s banking regulator introduced the new rules that extended the requirement for a mortgage stress test to ALL homebuyers, including those with larger down payments. The new guidelines now require federally regulated financial institutions to vet applicants for uninsured mortgages by using a minimum qualifying rate equal to the greater of the Bank of Canada’s five-year benchmark rate (currently 4.89%) or their contractual rate plus 2 percentage points. Furthermore, if the client wants a variable rate (currently at 2.70%), they will need to qualify using the benchmark rate (currently 4.89%). If you have any further questions about these changes, please call Sam McDadi Real Estate at 905-502-1500.

CELEBRATING 20 YEARS OF FUN & ENTERTAINMENT by stephanie skretkowski

| photo courtesy of adam pulicicchio

Standing outside the main entrance of the Hershey Centre, on a clear day, one look east shows the Toronto city skyline, and a look southwest provides views of the iconic Marilyn Monroe condo towers. Celebrating its 20th anniversary in 2018, the 17,0002ft arena is Mississauga’s home to sports and entertainment. Opened in 1998, the facility continues to provide spectacular views with live action sports, music productions and concerts, as well as National and World athletic competitions. The Hershey Centre is owned by the City of Mississauga and privately operated by SMG, a service that provides management to more than 15 million square feet of exhibition space and more than 1.5 million sports and

entertainment seats globally. The popular arena recently received upgrades to LED lighting, state of the art sound system, new dasher boards and spectator screening. The renovations ensure the facility is presenting the best product in front of the community and visitors from surrounding areas and abroad. The Ontario Hockey League’s 2016/2017 Eastern Conference and Central Division Champs, Mississauga Steelheads, look to continue their record with NHL-drafted players like Owen Tippet and Nicolas Hague. The NBA Gatorade League’s 2017 Champions Raptors 905, also look to setting more records for their 3-year-old team with their returning championship contributors, like Edy Tavares.

2018 marks the facility’s 20th anniversary packed with entertainment, action, affordable tickets, and FREE parking on site. Aside from the regular season home games for the Steelheads and the 905, plenty of ticket packages are available for Live Pro Boxing on December 16; Sesame Street Live on February 24 and 25; Canadian band Hedley Cageless Tour featuring Shawn Hook and Neon Dreams, on March 3; and The Harlem Globetrotters on April 21. The venue will also host the 55+ Ontario Summer Games in August. More information about events and anniversary celebrations are found at www.HersheyCentre.com.

SUPERMOON JAPANESE STYLE CHEESECAKES by craig silva | above photo courtesy of jerry grymek; below photos courtesy of craig silva Streetsville residents Sami and Mona Kustantini have teamed up with PR guru and close friend Jerry Grymek to bring Supermoon Japanese Style Cheesecakes to Mississauga’s thriving food scene. Sami says “we wanted to bring some fun trendy food that is often found in Toronto to our local neighbourhood. We looked for a location along Queen Street and then a spot at 128 Queen Street South opened up. The stars and planets just aligned.” Mona is the creative chef extraordinaire and explains “the difference between Japanese style cheesecake and regular cheesecake is that Japanese style uses less cream cheese and has a lot of whipped egg whites to keep it super fluffy.” This wonderful new bakery specializes in Japanese-style cheesecakes, cheese tarts and bubble tea. They’re available in regular, chocolate and red velvet, with other seasonal flavours available for holidays. “The idea of Supermoon has been in development since late 2016 and after all of our hard work, it feels great to have finally landed in Mississauga. We were able to taste a lot of versions of the recipes so the journey

has been as fun as the destination. We want to grow as this is only the beginning for us – it’s one small step for Mississauga, one giant step for Supermoon!” proclaims Jerry. Supermoon wants to incorporate Flavours of the Month that will play off of key seasons and holidays (i.e. Pumpkin flavour in October). The food is delicious; the location is ideal and the enthusiasm and drive is ever-present. Where did the last component, the unique name, come from? Mona explained it was inspired by a story she wrote based on a legend that Sami turned into a poem.

Come live with me on the moon, I can give you a lift!” But with no gravity, the cheesecakes were so fluffy they flew, through the galaxy, into our bakery, and finally to you! “We can make cheesecakes all day and all night, and enjoy them to the very last magnificent bite!”

Once upon a time, an old man lived on the moon. Had a sweet craving, and so he grabbed his spoon, packed up his things, and got in a balloon. He arrived on earth, in search of a delicious treat. Something very fluffy, yet cheesy, and sweet. Until one day he came across friendly bunny, who made him laugh out loud for being so funny. Together they walked in the dark, and when it was sunny, searching for sugar, cream, milk, and honey. “Hocus Pocus” the bunny
