THE MISSISSAUGA SYMPHONY YOUTH ORCHESTRA by ryan tobin |

photo courtesy of black umbrella photography

The Mississauga Symphony Youth Orchestra (MSYO) is an exciting division of the Mississauga Symphony Orchestra, offering music education and performance opportunities to young classical musicians in the G.T.A. Led by Music Director and Conductor, Maestro Denis Mastromonaco, the MSYO has quickly established itself as the western GTA’s foremost youth orchestra. Maestro Mastromonaco brings with him over 20 years of experience in conducting and teaching both symphonic and operatic groups, having worked with orchestras nationally and internationally including New York’s Orchard Park Orchestra, Czech Republic’s West Bohemian National Orchestra, and the National Academy Orchestra of Canada. Beginning in September of 2013 with 60 musicians divided into two ensembles, the MSYO now boasts a membership of 150 musicians divided into three ensembles: the Sinfonietta, an all-strings ensemble designed for musicians 8-11; the Philharmonic, an intermediate orchestra designed for musicians 12-17; and a full Symphony Orchestra designed for young adults. The explosion in membership and a retention rate over 90% per season dispels the myth that traditional classical music is declining in popularity with younger generations, as does a membership that is as diverse as the communities that exist within Mississauga. Thanks to the support of the Living Arts Centre, the MSYO is able to provide rehearsal and performance opportunities in professional facilities. In 2018/19, three out of our four concerts will be held in Hammerson Hall, a world class theatre with seating for up to 1,315 guests. This award-winning theatre is fully equipped with sound, lighting, and hosts a rich and diverse spectrum of events throughout the year. The MSYO’s upcoming concert season features something for everyone. From our Remembrance Day concert that pays tribute to Canada’s war veterans, to our family oriented Christmas concert with the Mississauga Symphony Orchestra and Resonance youth choir, to the wonderful classics of symphonic repertoire and your favourite music from Hollywood blockbusters, our 2018/19 season is a perfect opportunity to expose the young musicians in your family to music that has entertained audiences across the globe for generations. In addition to performing the classics of symphonic repertoire under the direction of an internationally accomplished Music

Director and Conductor in a world-class performing arts facility, the young musicians of the MSYO have the unique opportunity to be mentored by the principal core players of the MSO. The future is bright for Mississauga’s young musicians. For more information, make sure to visit us online at: mississaugasymphony.ca.

BUILDING A STRONG MATHEMATICAL MIND Co-operative Group Work

by kimberley langen, CEO & co-founder, Spirit of Math

®

Schools

Imagine having the opportunity to be in a room of brilliant people, not just for one day, but week-after-week. Imagine that you could listen to those brilliant people: to their logic; to their thoughts; and to their thinking. Also, imagine that you were able to share your own thoughts, getting immediate feedback from those people. Imagine that you were able to ask them to help you with problems that you just couldn’t seem to get through. Wouldn’t that be exciting? Now, imagine your children having the same opportunity, once a week for an entire year. Every week, they are being taken care of and guided through the process. This is the magic of a Spirit of Math class. When a group of high performing students who enjoy a work like it is candy for their minds, and who thrive on challenging questions get together, they just can’t help but get excited. Their minds are stimulated by the interaction. The challenges they pose to each other not only feed their enthusiasm, but change the way they think. When it comes to math, collaboration is critical. Working through

difficult problems starts first by struggling through them on your own; but after a little while, you will need to ask someone for help. Learning to use the ideas of other bright people will generate an explosion of new ways to think, and consolidate well thought-out, logical and realistic ideas. Cooperative group work and presentation skills are stressed in the Spirit of Math class, not only for their essential life-skills benefits, but because teamwork is often essential for a student to get the solution to a problem. Through teamwork, students develop the ability to work effectively with others, learning from their peers, and learning how to make helpful contributions to group learning. Our experience has shown that when we present mathematics at an appropriately complex and thought-provoking level, students naturally want to analyze their work and discuss ideas with their peers. QUIRKY

Montreal

by jay kana | uncredited photos by jay kana

Montreal is a wonderful travel destination through its creative cuisine choices, an astounding arts culture and a plethora of picturesque pockets of the city. This beautiful city also has some interesting and quirky attractions that are certainly worth checking out.

Station F-MR

A free and unique public art exhibit in the trendy Griffintown neighbourhood, Station F-MR utilizes decommissioned métro trains as a venue for a art gallery, a design boutique, a café, a stage and a studio. Smartly, some aspects of the programming are open to develop activities on the site, making it truly community-friendly. Furthermore, local talents have been sourced for art exhibitions, film screenings, creative workshops, concerts, shows and local products markets.

Swan’s at H20

Taking an ordinary pedal boat and adding a fair sized swan shaped and painted body takes a regular visit on the Lachine Canal to

a fun, picture worthy experience. You can find these creative pedal boats at H2O Adventures, where you can also enjoy kayak, paddle-boat or eco-friendly electric boat rentals to admire the city with that’s close to the Atwater Market.

Surfing on the Saint-Lawrence River

If I didn’t see it, I wouldn’t have believed it. Full credit to the locals for making the most of the rapids of the Saint-Lawrence and channeling it into a cool space to catch a wave. River surfing has been done for nearly 50 years and since we all can’t live by an ocean, Montreal folk, along with tons of visitors, have taken advantage of this quirky opportunity to enjoy the waterway.

Habitat 67

In what looks like a massive, creative game of Jenga, the legendary Habitat 67 buildings are a marvel of engineering designed by at the time 23 year old architect Moshe Safdie. Blending minimalistic and modern design cues, this world-famous attraction is still fully functional and in high demand. Created for Expo 67, this clever use of modular space has been used as inspiration worldwide.

Grévin Museum

With a history spanning nearly 140 years, the Grévin Museum showcases over 120 wax figures of well-known characters from history and pop-culture; and they’re done with eerie accuracy. Located on the fifth floor of Montreal’s Eaton Centre, you’ll experience an array of historical periods, supplemental information and make sure your smartphone is fully charged as you’ll be snapping pictures aplenty.

Monville Robot

The newly opened Hôtel Monville has taken room service to the next level via their very clever and quirky Monville Robot (they’ll give it an official name in late 2018.) The 20-storey, four-star hotel enables guests to place their room service order via their Smart TV and shortly thereafter, this cute robot (through the power of GPS) shows up at your door with your order. While this type of technology is quickly rising in other parts of the world, it’s new to Canada and expect it to become increasingly popular in the coming years.

John Lennon & Yoko Ono Suite

As a lifelong musician, this is one of my favourite attractions in the city! The famous John Lennon and Yoko Ono suite where the famous 1969 "bed-in for peace" was held is also where the song "Give Peace a Chance" was written and recorded. Updated for modern day, the suite is reimagined while holding on to historical elements, complete with a virtual reality and audio experience and several in-room surprises. And yes, you can still book the suite, which comes complete with a replica guitar beside the bed.

Portus 360

Montreal’s radiant revolving restaurant, Portus 360 sits high up on the 31st floor of the EVO Building. Elevating a stellar dining experience, this quirky Portuguese-inspired restaurant provides guests a panoramic view of marvelous Montreal as they dine on absolutely delicious food from the owner of this and many other restaurants, Helena Loureiro. Order an appetizer and dessert as it takes approximately two hours for a full 360 degree turn. Good thing the food and service are outstanding!

Bota Bota

Docked at the Old Port, this contemporary spa, was once an old ferryboat and has been remarkably transformed into an attractive, enticing modern attraction for those looking to reenergize and reinvigorate themselves. Available services include several water treatments, massages, Nordic Baths (dry sauna or steam bath, then a cold bath and finally stretching and or time in a whirlpool.) Whether you’re looking to reduce your stress levels or simply relax and unwind, this spa on the Saint-Lawrence is a hidden gem that deserves a visit or few. To plan your visit - mtl.org

ONE TANK TRIPS AUTUMN ADVENTURES by jay kana | photo by john michael lindsey on Unsplash “The days of summer have flown by, as they always do. The leaves have started to turn, and a crisp breeze rummages through the trees.” – Jennifer Merrick Ah, autumn… the leaves sliding from green to orange and red, sweaters and scarves are released from closets and it’s a wonderful time to jump in the car and do a few short jaunts to enjoy the season. Here are three One Tank Trips definitely worth doing this season:

SCANDINAVE SPA – BLUE MOUNTAINS

Drive a little over an hour north and you’ll find a relaxing oasis via the serenity of Scandinave Spa in the Blue Mountains. Surrounded by majestic scenery upon 25 acres of land, gaze upon Ontario birch, Canadian maple and pine trees and expansive views of the UNESCO World Biosphere Reserve Niagara Escarpment. Autumn is especially remarkable as you’ll have a chance to experience a colourful tree display. Once you’re there indulge in a variety of Scandinavian bath, spa and massage treatments, all in a tranquil, phone-free environment.

Autumn’s bursts of colours perfectly frame this radiant region as you create your own route map to your wineries. There are tour operators in the area that can do the driving as well. From reds to white wines and big to boutique wineries, your time in the Niagara Escarpment and the picturesque Niagara River Parkway is a must-see.

WATERFALL TOUR – HAMILTON & SURROUNDING AREAS

Put on a good pair of shoes and head west to the “Waterfall Capital” boasting over 100 of these wonderful waterfalls and cascades. From smaller, ribbon cascades to the larger, deep-drop wonders, it’s easy to spend a day walking, hiking and filling up your Instagram feed. Webster Falls is the largest and if you find the right spot, you’ll get postcard worthy shots. Devil’s Punchbowl treats you to a deep, multi-coloured gorge that’s simply stunning. Felker’s Falls requires a bit of extra work but I assure you, it’ll be worth it once you see just how gorgeous and scenic this waterfall is.

WINE COUNTRY – NIAGARA-ON-THE-LAKE & SURROUNDING AREAS We’re fortunate to live so close to this hotbed for wonderful wine and as such, it’s a quick hour-ish long drive to reach Niagara-OnThe-Lake. There are over 20 wineries in the region, each offering something different from the wines itself to tours, with plenty in between.

While October is Small Business Month, being fully aware of and managing your business smartly and strategically is crucial year round. 16 MODERN MISSISSAUGA | AUTUMN 2018

When starting or growing a small business you may have many questions. Getting the right answers to these questions, at the right time, is essential to building a successful business. Having an advisory team that consists of business professionals with the right expertise, could provide the answers, guidance, information and support you need to make the right decisions for your business. Lawyers, accountants, business consultants, industry specialists, and subject matter experts are some professionals who can add value as part of your small business advisory team. During the start-up of your business,

lawyers and accountants are especially valuable. They will be able to offer recommendations on what type of business to register, such as a sole proprietorship, partnership or incorporation, and advise you on any government regulations and/or licenses that may be required for your business. Lawyers can provide guidance and services which may include buying and selling companies, trademarks, commercial contracts and other various legal agreements. Accountants can offer advice and services including developing and managing an effective bookkeeping system, filing of income and other business taxes, and helping with payroll.

W H E N S TA R T I N G & G R O W I N G YO U R B U S I N E S S

Business consultants are valuable as an advisory team member as they can offer strategic guidance and services such as writing a business plan, developing operation strategies, sourcing funding and grant opportunities, and assisting with staff requirements. Industry experts are valuable in that they may be able to offer advice on what steps you need to take to get started and answer questions that may be challenging to your business; for example, how to import, export, or manufacture a specific product. Subject matter experts are often brought in on an as-needed basis to support specific projects that are essential for the

development of your business and outside your area of expertise. For example, a subject matter expert may be a technology expert that can advise you on how to launch a mobile application. Or, if you are taking your business to the international marketing, you may have someone advise you on how to do business in that country. In addition to putting together an advisory board, there are other supports available which includes resources from the Federal, Provincial and Municipal governments. The City of Mississauga’s Mississauga Business Enterprise Centre (MBEC) is an available resource to support the development and growth of Mississauga businesses. MBEC is

a central place to get the guidance, resources and information you need for your business. MBEC offers support to help you navigate government requirements, including help in registering your business. Other services include low-cost or free workshops and seminars to help develop essential business skills, such as sales, business planning, and digital marketing; entrepreneurship programs with training and grant opportunities; and one-on-one consultations and business plan reviews. If you have business questions and not sure where to start, MBEC staff is available to help.

WINTER TIRES by jay kana |

photo by imthaz ahamed on unsplash

THEY CAN SAVE YOU MONEY

You can receive a discount from your auto insurance provider by installing winter tires on your vehicle. Rates vary by provider and the average annual savings hovers between three and five percent.

DO YOUR HOMEWORK BEFORE INVESTING IN WINTER TIRES

The lowest cost isn’t the highest quality and vice versa. Consumer Reports, the Automobile Protection Association, Car and Driver, along with several other resources have plenty of data and rankings done through extensive testing. Speak with you trusted automotive specialist as well before making a decision to get a full scope of information.

GET A SET OF FOUR

Regardless of front, rear or all-wheel drive, it’s crucial that all four tires on your vehicle are equipped with winter tires. Ignore that thought of it being a budget-friendly decision to opt for two.

Instead, realize that your vehicle will be better equipped for winter driving with four winter tires, especially as it will increase the handling capabilities of your vehicle.

“ALL SEASON” TIRES TO NOT INCLUDE WINTER

Do you have one piece of footwear that’s good for the beach, hiking, mud, rain and snow? Me either. The same holds true for tires. Winter tires are made from a different compound that are designed and engineered to perform better than your summer/three-season tires. They increase stopping distances and provide better maneuverability in temperatures lower than 7 degrees Celsius.

THEY’RE NOT JUST FOR SNOW

Winter tires should never be called “snow” tires. Winter tires handle cold weather, icy, slick road conditions and snow/slush. The reality is that there won’t be massive snowfalls every day of winter. There will, however, be many cold days and having the right tire can increase the control you have while you drive.

YOUR STOPPING DISTANCES ARE REDUCED

Putting two identical cars side by side on an icy/snowy road, one with and one without winter tires, is something that’s been done dozens of times, all with the same results; the car with the winter tires stops faster than the car without. In situations where you’ve got to stop the car quickly, it’s always smarter to have the right equipment at hand, well, foot.

PREPARING YOUR HOME F O R

by sam mcdadi |

If you're an Ontario homeowner, you'll want to do all you can to prepare your home properly for the coming weather. It's important to examine all areas of the home and think about what you should do before the first frost. Properly preparing your home has many advantages. It will help you spot potential areas of weakness before more serious problems develop. YOUR FURNACE The furnace is the heart of your home. You want to make sure it's in good working order before the cold hits. Examine it yourself or consider asking a professional to do so. Fixing small things now can prolong the life of your furnace and save you money in the long run. DOORS & WINDOWS Doors and windows offer light and air. Doors and windows can also allow heat to leak out. Now is the time to look closely at them. You're looking for any evidence of leaks from the outside. One way to find leaks is to tape plastic wrap to a pencil. Bring it in front of the windows and doors. If the plastic wrap moves, this can be an indication there's unwanted drafts in your home. CLEANING THE GUTTERS Gutters can get clogged over time. Fall is the ideal time of year to examine your gutters closely. You want to make sure there are no impediments. Clogged gutters can lead

to the build-up of ice. Ice can damage your gutters and damage your roof. THE HOME'S LANDSCAPING While trees like Oak and Maple make any neighborhood feel inviting, they can also create dangerous conditions. Branches can become laden with ice and damage your home. Bushes can block off a pathway and make it hard to navigate in the cold weather. INSPECT YOUR ROOF The roof of your home keeps everything inside dry and free of moisture. Certain types of roofs have a specific lifetime. A roof may be worn out in a few decades. If you are approaching the end of your roof's useful life, fall is the ideal time to think about putting in a new one. CHECK THE PIPES Water pipes are particularly vulnerable to colder weather. Winter is the perfect time to think about how to protect your pipes from the cold. Ontario winters can be quite hard on your home. As the weather gets colder, now is the time to think about how to prepare it properly for autumn and winter. Call me at 905-502-1500 for more information www.mcdadi.com

Charity, Community and Cars No doubt about it, Ron Starr’s 1958 Super ‘88 Oldsmobile is a classic and often referred to as a “Chrome Wagon.” This 5,000 pound hardtop is the epitome of the 50’s; big engines, loads of glitter and a real gas-guzzler. Ron’s interest in cars started as a teenager as he owned a 1951 Ford before he had a driver’s licence. Now a grandfather, Ron is passing on his love for classic automobiles to his grandsons; Liam, Aeden, and Jake. As the owner of 11 classics ranging from a 1933 Dodge to a 1989 Pontiac Turbo Trans Am, the grandkids are sharing Ron’s passion by picking favourites. In addition to collecting classic cars, Ron is the Ward 6 Councillor for Mississauga

MISSISSAUGA’S RON STARR by jay kana

and was Ward 7 Councillor in the late 1970’s. Hazel McCallion personally encouraged him to run for Council due to his extensive background in business, having managed, and/or participated in $1 billion of completed building projects. Ron says his interest in politics is a result of his years of experience with large-scale project management and working with people. As a professional engineer, he has a way of taking a big problem and breaking it down into manageable steps. Starr says “I want to help residents, understand how municipal government works.” He also has a heart for giving back; a true believer in volunteerism and magnanimity

of charitable works, he sat on many boards including Credit Valley Hospital, Living Arts Centre, Mississauga Board of Trade and several other causes. He’s notably known for his popular backyard garden party fundraiser, Starr’s on the Credit, which has raised a million dollars for charity since 2004. In 2016, the Starr family named ErinoakKids as the beneficiary of their annual fundraiser; hosting more than 350 guests in his backyard to enjoy food donated by local restaurants, live entertainment and to engage in auctions. ErinoakKids is Ontario’s largest children’s treatment centre, now serving almost 17,000 children and youth each year in Peel, Halton and Dufferin County. It provides a broad range of medical, therapeutic and support services to children with physical and developmental disabilities, autism, communication disorders, and children who are deaf or blind. However, the Starr Family’s philanthropic giving did not end there. They would go on to name ErinoakKids as the event beneficiary for two more years, bringing their total to ErinoakKids to more than $450,000. Councillor Starr and his family continue to support ErinoakKids and children with disabilities. Ron says if there is one message he would like to leave people with, it is to encourage them to volunteer and do things in the community to give back. “In the long run, that’s what you’ll be remembered for – making a difference,” says Ron definitively.

ORIGINS OF HALLOWE'EN

by john murray lewis photo by Mathew Schwartz on Unsplash

Hallowe'en has fast become one of autumn's spookiest holidays, but did you know it was invented right here in Mississauga? In fact, its origins can be traced directly back to that one time John Lennon crashed on Ronnie Hawkins's couch for two weeks.

HUMBLE BEGINNINGS It was 1969. NASA was putting people on the moon. UCLA was birthing the misshapen travesty we now call "the internet." And Ronnie Hawkins had a problem. Every October, gangs of neighbourhood children invaded poor Ronnie's Mississauga Road farm to feast upon his bountiful crop of bumbleberries. Ronnie tried to reason with them. That didn't work. He tried to threaten them. That didn't work. He even released a flock of man-eating birds to carry off the fattest and weakest children. But that only resulted in more lawsuits. Local celebrity Ronnie Hawkins was at his wits' end... and it looked like the story of Hallowe'en was over before it even began.

HELP! HE NEEDS SOMEBODY! Enter bespectacled peace enthusiast and former member of The Quarrymen, John Lennon. 1969 was a tumultuous time for "the third most handsome Beatle." Wherever he went, he was mobbed by young people trying to get at the hard candies that he carried in his pockets. He didn't want to carry all those candies around. It wasn't his idea. But Yoko insisted. It was a good thing she did! Because John had discovered an interesting fact about children: they loved hard candies! And if they approached him furtively, and wore ghoulish costumes, and at the last moment screamed "TRICK OR TREAT!" they would frighten him so badly that he ran away and dropped all the candies safely behind him. John knew he had a job to do. So he packed up his candies and hopped on the earliest flight to Mississauga.

A BERRY SCARY TRADITION IS BORN Ronnie wasn't so sure about John's plan. Would kids really prefer hard candies over delicious, nutritious bumbleberries? But he figured it was worth a shot. And guess what? It worked. Child after child came to his door, clad in ghastly attire, and demanded either tricks or treats -- sometimes, both. Ronnie's crop was saved! From Ronnie Hawkins's humble farm, the tradition spread across North America and the world. Inspired by his success, John Lennon returned to England and quit music to open up the first Spirit Hallowe'en franchise. And that's how Mississauga broke up the Beatles.

It’s Time for

Compression Stockings! by gaby mammone

If you experience tired legs, swollen feet & ankles, are pregnant, or have varicose veins, you may require compression stockings. Compression therapy is a process in which pressure is applied as a graduated compression, strongest at the ankle and decreasing up the leg. Compression therapy is a simple and effective means of increasing blood flow activity in the lower limbs through strengthening the support of your veins. Compression stockings increase the draining of substances and promote movement of tendons and joints. They can also improve the flow of the lymph fluid that bathes the cells in the legs, reducing tissue swelling. By squeezing the walls of the veins and leg tissues, compression stockings help blood in the veins return to the heart. Medical Mart are authorized vendors of Sigvaris and Bauerfiend compression stockings, “The look good feel great solution.” We have certified surgical fitters on staff that can measure and fit you for the

right stockings and can provide education regarding compression therapy. 6 WINES TO FALL FOR THIS AUTUMN by anjana viswanatha

Fall is officially here, so time to move on from our summer sippers and find some cozy comfort in fuller bodied wines. Here is a list to get you started: 1. CHANSON PÈRE & FILS VIRÉCLESSÉ 2015 (VINTAGES#: 42044)

3. DOMAINE MABY LA FORCADIÈRE TAVEL ROSÉ 2017 (VINTAGES#: 701318)

2. SERGIO ZENATO RISERVA LUGANA 2015 (VINTAGES#: 928218)

4. STÉPHANE AVIRON VIEILLES VIGNES MOULIN-À-VENT 2015

From the Mâconnais region of France, this ripe and flavourful Chardonnay has notes of apple butter, peach and spice along with a lively mineral finish. Round on the palate, this wine pairs with roast chicken or butternut squash risotto.

Made from 100% Trebbiano di Lugana from the Veneto region in Italy, this wine is barrel-aged and has weight and texture, along with layers of rich stone fruit, lemon custard, florality and spice. Lovely on its own or with creamy pasta.

Don’t give up on rosé just yet – try this deeply hued, dry rosé with your fall cuisine. Full-bodied, with concentrated black fruit and herbs, the wine has a crisp acidity that makes it wonderfully food friendly. Perfect for your Thanksgiving dinner table.

(VINTAGES#: 368134 )

While young, fruity Beaujolais tends to have a more summery vibe, cru wines from older vines (this one from 100-year-old vines) and barrel aging achieve a seriousness that befits fall. Loaded with dark cherry and blackberry, this wine has great structure and will develop over the next couple of years.

5. TAWSE GROWER'S BLEND CABERNET FRANC 2015 (LCBO# 284570) A Niagara superstar, Cabernet Franc is the great balancing act between richness and vibrancy. This vintage is meaty and smoky with great tannin-acid balance and heaps of ripe black fruit, dried herbs and liquorice. Extend your barbeque season with grilled lamb or your best gourmet burger.

6. BARÓN DE LEY 7 VIÑAS RESERVA 2010 (VINTAGES# 91983)

This beautiful Rioja is made from seven different grape varieties – three of them white grapes adding freshness and elegance. There is ripe red fruit on the palate, along with notes of rose and balsamic. The tannins are soft and round, making this a lovely sipping wine on a cool autumn night.
