Editor's Letter December 1st, 2018 marks the beginning of year four for Modern Mississauga Media and it’s been a thoroughly wonderful experience working for you over the past three years.

And yes, there have been dips in the entrepreneurial roller coaster. Some refer to them as failures. I see them as learning moments and opportunities to recalibrate, refocus and review. I strive to be constantly learning from others and through various mediums and to never become complacent in my entrepreneurial excursion. With the support of a world-class team with immense talents and drive, Modern Mississauga Media has shown consistent growth from a print magazine to an established and reputable media company in a highly competitive industry. To my much smarter better half, Laura, whose unwavering support has been a primary contributor to my success and growth personally and professionally, an infinite amount of thanks and gratitude. The vision, talents and inspiration of Art Director Elizabeth Wise, (who understood my ideas from day one…even the farfetched ones) have constantly produced a truly beautiful, elegant and inspiring magazine that has been complimented by nearly everyone I’ve spoken with. The support of family and friends are paramount and I cannot thank all

The continuous flow of support from the community, the readers, family and friends, advertising partners and our suppliers has kept the team and I moving forward. With a large number of small businesses not making it through year one and even less making it through two calendar turns, I’m incredibly fortunate to be able to write this celebratory letter. It’s been a long journey filled with good ol’ fashioned hard work, perseverance and dedication all in the name of continuously providing Mississauga with a media outlet that’s honest and respectful of its readers. There have been a plethora of positive moments experienced that I hold close, many of them small in scale but large in impact. Being able to help and support other entrepreneurs, businesses, artists and people is something I will never take for granted.

when your home

ISN'T SELLING by sam mcdadi |

Selling a home is a large undertaking. There are quite a few decisions that sellers have to make in regards to selling their home. The best real estate professionals are there to help sellers with every decision— how best to market the home, the correct asking price, the proper terms and conditions of the sale, when is best to sell, etc. All of these factors influence when the home sells. If a home lingers on the market for too long, this can be hard on the homeowner, both financially and emotionally, and it can make potential buyers fear there is something wrong with the home. Determining why your home isn't selling is crucial. Your real estate professional should be able to advise you. Here are three key factors as to why a home may be sitting for sale for too long: THE HOME'S CONDITION

One of the most important factors when selling a home is its appeal. A home that exudes curb appeal is a home that is likely to sell fast. The same is true of interior spaces. In today’s real estate market, staging your home is crucial for a fast sale. Ensure every room is clean, decluttered and appeals to the majority of potential buyers. THE ASKING PRICE

Price is perhaps the single most important factor when it comes to buying a home. This is the first thing that most buyers notice. It's crucial to get the correct price right from the start, when the house goes on the market. Consultation with a real estate professional can help with this process. The proper asking price is based on recent sale prices of similar homes in the neighbourhood. SELLING TERMS

A home seller may have specific conditions they have placed on selling that can make it harder for the home to sell. For example, the homeowner may have set up terms that require the potential buyer to wait until they've found another home. They may also ask buyers to accept certain existing defects such as a non-working fireplace or a deck that needs to be repaired immediately. This can dampen interest and cause buyers to turn away. A seller should think about their selling conditions. If you are considering selling your home, please call Team McDadi at 905-502-1500. It would be our pleasure to provide you with a free home evaluation.

CREATIVE MINDS AT PLAY

6 Q U E S T I O N S W I T H M A R I E PAY N E

by ann ivy male

| photos courtesy of ann ivy male

Modern Mississauga Media and Pixie Blue Studio feature a champion of the arts, Marie Payne. WHY DO YOU FEEL IT'S IMPORTANT TO CULTIVATE THE ARTS IN A COMMUNITY? It brings vitality, colour and richness. Arts on the Credit widely supports this via the annual art show, art tour and new online ‘art shop’. WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE QUOTE? “Art is the only way to run away without leaving home.” Twyla Tharp HOW DOES YOUR CREATIVE MIND RECHARGE? Visiting galleries and exhibitions, taking courses and workshops.

WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO YOUR YOUNGER, CREATIVE SELF? Explore the arts rather than automatically going down the path traditionally offered to women back in the early 60’s. IF YOU COULD HAVE A CONVERSATION WITH AN ARTIST WHO’S INSPIRED YOU, WHO WOULD IT BE? Judy Chicago. I’ll never forget her exhibition at the AGO, “The Dinner Table”. WHAT GENRE OF MUSIC DO YOU LISTEN TO WHEN YOU ARE CREATING OR WEAVING? I usually work in silence. If I do have music on, it’s good ol’ 60’s rock n’ roll. Pixie Blue Studio is located in the heart of Port Credit’s “Artsy East Village.” pixiebluestudio.com | 905.990.7494

905 Arts Scene Heats Up with New Exhibition at Visual Arts Mississauga by Heather Zadkovich Tired of trekking to Toronto to enjoy the contemporary art scene? Head over to Visual Arts Mississauga to enjoy works by the City’s top emerging visual artists Motivated by the lack of under-representation for emerging visual artists in the City of Mississauga, Visual Arts Mississauga (VAM) at Riverwood was inspired to create its new Creative Residency (VCR). VAM’s new collective will host Mississauga’s premiere youth art exhibition from February 4 to 17, 2019. All are welcome to the public Opening Reception to be held on Friday, February 8 at 7 p.m. Proudly sponsored by TD Bank and Modern Mississauga Media, this contemporary exhibition will showcase the work of youth artists including painters, installation artists, photographers and more. Last year’s exhibition saw a packed house of arts lovers who enjoyed VAM’s live DJ and the meet and greet opportunities with the artists. “Our Creative Residency Artists are all incredible talents who are making their way in the professional art world,” explains Events and Exhibitions Coordinator Eldiana Begovic. “Our exhibition provides a much needed platform for our artists to showcase their skills in their own community. We have created an event that challenges the preconceived notion that all cutting-edge arts events take place in Toronto.” VAM’s youth exhibition runs from February 4 to 17, 2019. Please call 905-277-4313 for more details.

ONE TANK TRIPS HAPPINESS IN HOLIDAY VALLEY by jay kana Ah, Holiday Valley…one of my favourite One Tank Trips and only a little over two hours away. A year round destination that maintains its quaint, cozy aura even though it’s one of the top spots in the north east to visit and experience is their trademark, ensuring that they’ve never gotten too big for themselves. Since this is our Holiday issue, skiing takes a front seat at the 61 year old vacation spot. Holiday Valley boasts 13 lifts, 60 slopes and trails, three base lodges, two hotels, pools, mountain coaster and numerous amenities. The resort has become a leader in the ski industry and ranks among the favorites of skiers in the east. It’s absolutely family-friendly and a great spot for a gals/guys/friends/band/solo getaway. Once you cross the Peace Bridge, it’s a short and scenic jaunt south on the 190/90/219 that’ll lead you in to charming Ellicottville, where small town USA shines brightly with a quaint and modern main street. As you shuffle onward towards Holiday Valley, their majestic mountains envelop the horizon and eagerly await the chance to keep you and yours entertained, excited and enthralled. Whether you’re staying at the Inn At Holiday Valley or the Tamarack Club (my favourite!) know that you’ll have top-notch lodgings with easy access to the slopes and an army of amenities close by. It’s a skiers and snowboarder’s haven as you can easily carve

the day away and for the more horizontal-based types, enjoy the cross country skiing and snowshoeing routes. Plus, there’s the fun Sky Flyer Mountain Coaster. Personally, the vertical life excites me and I’m on the slopes for as long as my 40 year old body will allow. Being a true winter hot-spot, they’ve also got a sweet snow tubing park a few miles away. They’ve got a full-service rental facility on the grounds if you’re a casual skier/snowboarder. To slow down and soak in the rest of the resort, Holiday Valley has several hot tubs, indoor and outdoor pools, a sauna, a full-service spa and for you canine owners, the Inn permits one or two well behaved pooches. Food-wise, John Harvard's Brew House serves up classic pub fare and wonderful beer that’s simply delicious and paired with stellar service for lunch and dinner. This family owned resort is a smart, modern and close option for a day, weekend or week away. Yes, it’s a popular destination and one of the most visited in the north east but even with a plethora of people there, the wait times are very short and service levels are always high. Reach out if you’d like more info than my word count allows or if you want to share a chair lift. I’m relatively quiet on the way up as I write more than I talk…most times. holidayvalley.com

aging independently by gaby mammone

The aging process can alter the ability to accomplish even the simplest of tasks and it’s difficult seeing the change in physical or mental abilities of a loved one. Many seniors want to continue living independently without feeling like a burden to others. Here’s how to help them keep their independence:

staying active

Regular walking has many health benefits as it provides stronger bones, joints, and muscles with levelled surfaces being ideal. Rollators, walkers, support braces, and compression socks can all provide safety and freedom.

preparing the home

Invest in equipment within the home for extra confidence in their lives. Popular items include grab bars, raised toilet seats, bath benches, power lift chairs and many more. There are also many other equipment options available to help to reduce injury and provide independence in their day to day responsibilities.

“Many people simply need help, ideas and advice about equipment that exists to help them with daily tasks. Promoting healthy independent living increases self-esteem and provides your loved ones with a sense of comfort” says James Singh, Store Manager of Medical Mart Mississauga. Nouveau Wines photo by ponce_photograph on pixabay

As the fall harvest wraps up, many wineries turn their attention to celebrating the vintage with their Nouveau wines. These bright and fresh wines, typically made from Gamay grapes, are officially released in late November. It is always amazing to think that just weeks earlier, this wine was a cluster of grapes in the vineyard but with rapid fermentation and a quick bottling, it’s released just in time for the Holidays. You may wonder how a wine can be released so quickly; it is actually because of a unique winemaking technique called ‘carbonic maceration’. The hand-harvested Gamay grapes are directly transferred to a vessel filled with carbon dioxide where they undergo an accelerated fermentation process. Conventionally, grapes are crushed to release the juice and pulp from the skins prior to undergoing fermentation. With carbonic maceration, also known as whole-berry fermentation, the natural yeast migrates from the skin of the grapes into the pulp and most of the juice

is fermented while it’s still inside the grape. This winemaking process emphasizes fruit flavours without extracting bitter tannins from the grape skins. The resulting wines are often referred to as quaffable (i.e. easy drinking) because they are fresh and fruity with very low tannins, low alcohol, and often characterized by sweet, candied notes. It’s a wine intended for immediate consumption and not for cellaring and best enjoyed slightly chilled (13°C). Beaujolais Nouveau, a fruity red wine made from Gamay grapes grown in the Beaujolais region of France, is responsible for making this style of wine popular but producers from other parts of the world are making ‘primeur’ wines as well. There is Vino Novello from Italy – a light-bodied, fruity red wine produced using several grape varieties and typically released on October 30th. There is Vino Joven from Spain, which refers to a young wine from the current vintage that is meant to be consumed a year to 18 months from when it’s produced. And there are many US and Canadian Nouveau wines on the market which perfectly showcase that freshness and drinkability that has made this style of wine a perennial favourite for many. Nouveau wines are also produced right here in Niagara-on-the-Lake. One of our member wineries, Reif Estate Winery, produces two Nouveau wines: “The Fool” Gamay Nouveau made from Gamay Noir grapes featuring aromas and flavours of fresh juicy cherries and bubble gum complemented by a hint of white pepper and finishing with tart rhubarb fruit. A perfect pairing for a holiday turkey, sausage stuffing and cranberry sauce. (Available at the winery and LCBO) “The Hanging Man” Kerner Nouvau, a more unconventional nouveau made from the Kerner grape. A fruity off-dry white wine with apple strudel, peach and soft mango flavours. It’s an ideal pairing for a holiday ham and apple sauce or with hors d’oeuvres. (Available at the winery only) If you are looking for a fresh and fruity wine to enjoy over the Holidays you should definitely give Nouveau wines a try! Laura Vertucci is the Marketing Manager at Wineries of Niagara-on-the-Lake, a marketing cooperative of over 20 wineries nestled below the Niagara Escarpment amidst a landscape of vineyards and orchards stretching from the picturesque Niagara River Parkway.
