MODERN ARTIST:
Jade Hilton by jay kana |

1. What drew you to become a singer/songwriter?
I started with musical theatre as a child. At 14, I taught myself how to play guitar then started writing songs, which was a great way to express myself.
2. Of all your live performances to date, which one resonates the most and why?
My performance at the 2019 Rogers Cup in Toronto, as tennis has always been a big part of my life. I attended it growing up and often played on those courts as a junior. I graduated from the University of Illinois in 2018 on a full tennis scholarship and played on the varsity team. Having this opportunity is a dream come true.
3. Describe your musical style. A blend of folk and pop.
4. What's been the most challenging aspect of your musical career?
Immersing myself in the GTA music scene. After being away for four years at school, it was challenging for me coming home and being accepted here. However, I've made many connections by performing and getting out in the community.
5. What's been the most rewarding aspect?
Seeing how my music affects people. It’s crazy how many connections I've made with people in my community and around the world by performing and releasing music. I never thought so many people would be supporting me.
8
MODERN MISSISSAUGA | LATE SUMMER 2019
6. What keeps you motivated and driven?
My passion to make music for the rest of my life. I coach tennis daily and performing as much as I can. Everything I make goes toward my music career, including studio time, production, and equipment. One day, everything will pay off and I’ll get to focus on music full time.
7. What succinct advice do you have for other artists?
Be patient and never give up. With any career in the arts, the hardest part is staying positive. It's easy to quit, but if you can stay true to yourself and put in the work, the results will show.
8. Do you write lyrics or music first and why?
I start by playing around with some melodies on the guitar or piano, and if I'm feeling emotional I'll write some lyrics.
9. What four things are absolute necessities in your life? Music, family, exercise, and good food.
10. What's on the horizon for 2020?
I plan to have my EP released and several more shows lined up… I'm definitely excited for 2020!

Between the wonderful wine, boast-worthy beer & superb spirits, Philly is blossoming into a hot-spot for cool & creative drinks.
10 MODERN MISSISSAUGA | LATE SUMMER 2019
2015 was the last time I was in Philly, and it was via a road trip to experience the city and surrounding counties. The trip was wonderful and certainly memorable. This summer, I traded in my car for a plane and spent the majority of my time soaking in their thriving adult-beverage scene. In alphabetical order below (you know I don’t play favourites!) you’ll find a handful of must-visit spots in and around the city that are excelling at what they do:
Dock Street Brewery
Cracked open in 1985, they’re Philadelphia’s first craft brewery and have two avenues of exploration. The Dock Street Brewpub offers a casual dining room with plenty of fresh beer. Pair your favourite beer with one of their many mouthwatering hand-tossed, wood-fired pizzas. If you’re unsure of what pairs with what, the staff is friendly and very helpful! Take a 30 second walk around the corner and you’ll slide into the new and exciting Dock Street Cannery + Tasting Lounge. You’ll enjoy
Dock Street beer, along with Pennsylvania spirits. It’s a mixed-use space that supports various local arts events and doubles as a great place to soak in the city, regardless if you’re a local or a visitor.
Independence Beer Garden Within America’s most historic square mile is where you’ll find these 20,000 square feet of beer bliss, featuring both local and out of state beer. With such an inviting atmosphere paired with so many varieties, you’ll probably be a repeat customer during your visit. Tivoli lights, games and string lights help create memorable moments, regardless of your company.
Manatawny Craft Sprits Shop & Tasting Room
Their name is translated as “The Place We Meet To Drink” and they're nestled in a prime location; surrounded by several celebrated restaurants. It’s a great way to bookend your night out, whether
PHILADELPHIA
before and or afterward. They’re best described as a distillery creating specialty cocktails via their own tequila barrel-rested rum, vodka and white whiskey. Creatively, their bar is topped with copper and beneath is salvaged barn wood. When you go, start off with some samples to taste their unique offerings and follow up with bringing a bottle or few back with you. Their modern location utilizes old-world practices for a pronounced blend that current and new customers enjoy.
Paradocx Vineyard
Only an hour out of town in lovely Landenberg is where you’ll find this wonderful winery, owned by two pairs of physicians, hence the clever name! With 30% of their 100 acres of land bearing grapes, there are many varieties produced, including Cab Fran/Sauv, to Chardonnay, to Pinot and sweet wines. Interestingly, they sell six different wines in threelitre paint cans instead of traditional bottles or boxes. The grounds themselves are gorgeous and the sprawling winery will have your Instagram feed flowing. And the wine is even better!
Royal Boucherie
Pairing a historic building with modern décor, this Old City restaurant is multi-faceted. There’s the primary dining room, a bar and tavern area, an upstairs parlour and my favourite, the outdoor garden dining spot framed with strand lighting.
The wine list is extensive but not intimidating, which to me, signals that the team has carefully curated the wine list to satisfy their clients. Their cocktail menu is sees less options and enough variety that should have something for most palates. Be sure to snap some exterior photos of the vibrant street scape before you peruse the menu. If you’re there at dusk, the outdoor garden is simply magnificent to experience. In between visiting the aforementioned, swing by some of their star attractions, including the haunting Eastern State Penitentiary, One Liberty Observation Deck, the “Rocky Steps” at the Philadelphia Museum of Art, Reading Market and of course, try a few Philly Cheesesteak sandwiches. I tried six and my favourite was Jim’s Steaks. But hey, I fully encourage you to try plenty of them and let me know what your favourites are. When you go, stay at the Renaissance Philadelphia Downtown Hotel in the Historic District.
Philadelphia, I’ll see you sooner than later with an empty glass waiting to be “Philled.” MODERN MISSISSAUGA | LATE SUMMER 2019

12 MODERN MISSISSAUGA | LATE SUMMER 2019
La
aurentians One of the most beautiful destinations in Canada can be found in the majestic Laurentians region of Quebec.
While it’s predominantly known as a winter haven, it’s also a terrific place to experience in warmer months. I’ve been fortunate to explore several parts of Canada and recently, had the opportunity to do a road trip to this extraordinary area. If you haven’t been yet, it really is a breathtaking part of our country. The benefit of warmer months are that the walkability factor is high and you can pack light, in addition to seeing a different side of the Laurentians. Here’s what my four day adventure looked like:
SAINT-SAUVEUR
An hour North West of Montreal is where you’ll find the warm and charming town of Saint-Sauveur. The walkability factor is high and you’ll want to spend some time strolling up and down Rue Principale to check out the quaint shops. The entire region is active year round with splendid skiing in the winter and fun, outdoor activities in the warmer months. When you go, stay at the Manoir Saint-Sauveur as their 250 guest rooms and suites have been recently renovated. It’s one of the largest and most luxurious hotels in the Laurentians and features a rustic chic décor that’s cloaked in comfort and elegance. Dinner was thoroughly enjoyed at Le SaintSau, the oldest restaurant in the area. Enjoy bistro

style dishes, an extensive wine list, as well as local and international beer. There’s also lots of live entertainment, which adds to the allure.
SAINTE-AGATHE-DES-MONTS
I made a stop in at the massive TyroParc for a hiking and ziplining combo, and did the “The Classic,” which was four mega zip lines and a 1.3 km hike totaling 2.6 km in the air spread out over 2.5 hours. The views are simply spectacular from an aerial vantage point and if I wasn’t holding on tightly, I’d have taken more pictures and video. (Better invest in that helmet cam, right?) The hiking portion sees an ascension through cliff faces, ridges and greenery, which offers its own remarkable views. The longest zipline is 900 meters long, which was my favourite as I spent over a minute in motion in awe of my surroundings.
MONT-TREMBLANT
One of the world’s most attractive travel destinations, Mont-Tremblant has something for almost everyone year round. Primarily known for sensational skiing, the non-winter months are also quite enticing. Start with a leisurely walk through the colourful, Europeaninspired pedestrian village to experience a plethora of shops and dining options. To get a different view, take “Le Cabriolet” (an open air cable car) both ascending and descending a couple of times to really get an idea of how vast the area is. I rented an e-bike and explored the area, stumbled upon a beautiful bridge that provided a beautiful backdrop for pictures and impressively, thanks to the electric motor, hit a top speed of nearly 50 km/h!

Seeing the area via two-wheels and off the well-walked path is a wonderful way to further appreciate the area, especially with the electric motor boost. Since there’s a gorgeous, tranquil body of water in the area, explore it via a boat cruise offered by Les Croisières MontTremblant, where you’ll appreciate Tremblant’s beauty from the water. Each cruise is 60 minutes so get your cameras ready for some stunning photographs. A short drive from the village is the relaxing and refreshing Scandinave Spa’s 23,000 square feet of complete serenity. No phones are allowed as the power of silence truly is golden here. Settled in the Laurentian forest and kissing the shores of the Diable River, experience traditional Scandinavian baths in a peaceful and natural environment as you recharge yourself instead of your phone. Happening from June to October is the enchanting Tonga Lumina, a magical sensory experience taking place in the depths of Mont-Tremblant. The 1.5-km night walk through an illuminated pathway into the heart of nature. After a short ascension, the trail weaves down the hill through the woods, crossing streams and clearings. This sound and light show within the mountain illustrates the origin of this magical world-class region. Dining options are aplenty and here are three distinct options. Coco Pazzo serves up delectable and authentic fine Italian fare. With nearly 25 years of service, the menu is as exquisite as their wine selection. From homemade pasta to pesce and chardonnay to champagne, they’ve got you covered. La Diable Microbrewery, also in the village, prides itself on their delicious menu offerings (with burgers, poutine, ribs and wings to name a few) and generous portions, great prices and most attractively, their 100% natural beer, brewed with the highestquality ingredients in small batches right on site. Definitely try a few samples to find the right ones for you… oh, and the wings are so, so good! Choux Gras, located in the Fairmont, prides themselves on a very high quality menu featuring fresh, local and seasonal products served in a gorgeous dining room. Reservations are encouraged in this casual dress atmosphere. When you go, stay at the Fairmont because it’s bathed in approachable elegance, stellar service, central to everything and the rooms are splendid. To plan your adventure: quebecoriginal.com

AUTUMNOBILE ADVENTURES by jay kana |
Late summer and autumn in Ontario is truly gorgeous and as the vibrant colours of the season brilliantly light up our landscape, it’s an ideal time to embrace the change of season. Here, alphabetical order, are a few of my favourite autumn drives that I encourage you to experience along with a pumpkin spiced anything and a fully charged camera: FORKS OF THE CREDIT
This is my favourite drive route. Start at Mississauga road at Lakeshore and go all the way north until you hit Belfountain. At the split, stay right to get onto Forks of the Credit road and enjoy the beautiful scenery. You’ll reach Hurontario at the end and you can head south for a speedy trip back home or turn around and experience it again. Stop in at Forks of the Credit Provincial Park for a picnic and or to further experience autumn.
HAMILTON & WATERDOWN
Take Dundas westbound and go, go, go. And then go some more. In Waterdown, hang a left onto Howard road, which turns into Snake road, which in itself is a

wonderful drive. At the end that road, turn right on to Plains road, then left on to York road, right on Valley road and then right on Rock Chapel road to bring you back to Dundas. From there, check out any of the concession roads (another grid pattern) to enjoy what up and coming Hamilton has to offer. Plus, with a plethora of waterfalls, your autumn pictures can go from great to grandiose.
MUSKOKA
I once went on a media trip with Honda Canada for the new Civic launch and the route they mapped out was absolutely wonderful, scenic route through Muskoka. Take Highway 27 north and then merge onto the 400 for a bit and then jump onto Highway 11. If you’re hungry, make a quick stop at Webers and then carry on the 400. About 10 km from there, make a right onto Muskoka Rd 13 and follow the signs to stay on that road. It’s an absolutely stunning drive that’ll fill up your camera/ smartphone with gorgeous pictures.
NORTH MILTON
From Mississauga road, head west on 5 Sideroad until it becomes Campbellville road and hang a left on to Appleby line. One you reach Britannia, take a left (west) and then turn right (north) on to Guelph line for a different vantage point. As it’s a grid system, any of the turns you make should give you plenty of photo opps.

SET THE TRUTH ON OUR GROUND
Who are the half-seen figures you see circling the fire on parliament hill? Who do you see in the flickering light? We see more heroes than we’ll honour. We see more ghosts than we’ll admit as spectral bodies keep circling a centennial flame, shadows bound to light, waiting for their song. If you ask how long we’ll acknowledge names generations forgot, First remember the permanence of soil, of history and of voices echoing from long ago Before I remind you that atonement has no finish line or celebration for an ego chasing forgiveness, that the act itself and a hope for expanding awareness are goals unto themselves, Detached from accomplishment and rooted instead in a steep responsibility. Our railroad, binding northern lands, has both a last spike and a last soul securing it to the earth.
A singular Canadian idea dissolves when touched, reforming around arms reaching towards it, as it always has: Morphing faces of the dominion’s identity, a healing wisdom risen from the prairies, our flown symbol’s late birth, and the story of an anthem’s evolution transcending individual words. Arriving from Portugal, my own grandfather worked farmlands to bring his family across the ocean to forge lives unthinkable on their island; A signed letter sat on his mantle from the Prime Minister for a fiftieth anniversary of arrival, My pride mixing with a wish that right honourable hands signed enough letters For every kilometer paved to create our foundation and every finger calloused in the country’s formation Both light and dark mountains of the past loom high; Their silhouettes meeting at a narrowing point where pride in our past can’t exclude its reality If we’re to keep faith in our future.

THE 2019 BMW X7 by jay kana | photos courtesy of jay kana
BMW has added its largest offering to date via their first-ever X7 luxury SUV. With seating for six or seven and two engine options, this really is your luxury living room on wheels. The exterior is unmistakable, starting with the oversized kidney grille and flowing through the clean design lines through to the rear, which features a two-section split tailgate. LED lights are a fixture here with the impressive BMW Laser Light technology available for a longer line of sight at night. The rear doors are longer than the front doors to make ingress and egress easier on rear passengers and the X7 still maintains balanced proportions appearance-wise. Inside, a digital dashboard offers a wealth of information that’s easy to obtain and while there are some that aren’t a fan of the counterclockwise tachometer, it’s still quite readable. The intuitive iDrive infotainment system is one of the best in the luxury market due to the stunning high-resolution graphics and high ease of use. The seats, all electronic, are plush and comfortable all around and the rear-most seats are impressively full-sized. All your passengers will have enough space for a relaxed ride. The X7 borrows much of its lavish interior from the new X5, which
18 MODERN MISSISSAUGA | LATE SUMMER 2019
is quite impressive itself. Power comes in two turbocharged flavours. The xDrive40i sports a 3.0L inline six-cylinderengine churning out 335 horsepower and 330 lb-ft. of torque. Alternatively, xDrive50i engages with an enormous 4.4L V8 that roars with 456 horsepower and 479 lb-ft. of torque. Both run via an eight-speed Steptronic transmission. Acceleration is brisk and precise with little turbo lag throughout your travels. On the road, the X7 offers a very smooth and comfortable ride quality with drive modes that include Sport, Comfort, Eco Pro and Adaptive. Cornering, handling and responsiveness score respectably high given its large footprint and as it’s a BMW, you’re in the upper echelon for your overall driving experience. Safety features include blind spot warning, lane departure warning, front and rear collision warning, lane keep assist, along with many others, some of which come via upgraded packages. The addition of the X7 answers the market’s call for larger SUV’s to help move more people and more things. The upscale design, ultra-luxurious interior, advanced technology and engine options contribute to make the biggest BMW an attractive option for those looking for large-sized luxury.

THE 2020 KIA
TELLU R I DE
Kia’s 2020 Telluride, their all-new full-sized SUV, is the latest addition to a growing demand for larger vehicles. Available in either seven or eight seat configurations, plenty of standard technology and a very comfortable ride, let’s dig in to Kia’s largest offering to date. The massive rectangular shaped amber day running lights/turn signals are unmistakable and frame the front end beautifully, along with the word Telluride in block letters at the edge of the hood. The vertically opposed tail lights and smooth body lines give it a strong, upscale and clean look. Branded running boards are a nice touch but personally, it’d look sleeker without them. The EX and SX trims come as eight-seaters, while the SX Limited and SX Limited with Nappa see seven seats. Up front, Kia continues to produce the pinnacle for layouts with the best dashboard, infotainment and HVAC controls through a perfect balance of buttons, dials and a touchscreen. Seating scores very high marks for comfort up front and in the middle row, while the third row can be cramped on longer journeys for adults. Its wide body results in lots of elbow room and its height and non-sloped roofline give the taller folks ample head room.
There’s 2,455L of cargo space with the second and third rows folded, 1,304L with the third row folded and 601L with the third row upright. Powering all Tellurides is a 3.8L V6 providing 291 horsepower and 262 lb-ft. of torque through an eight-speed automatic gearbox. Acceleration is surprisingly quick and accurate for a full-sized vehicle and the cornering and handling are impressive. The ride quality is very quiet and parking isn’t as challenging some may think. Standard safety and technology include a blind view monitor, blind spot collision avoidance, lane follow assist, forward collision avoidance, front and rear parking sensors, rear cross traffic alert, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, USB ports in all three rows, wireless phone charging, a 10.25” touchscreen infotainment system, and advanced smart cruise control. Overall, the Telluride does what Kia does best; providing a great-looking, premium vehicle with an abundance of standard safety features at an affordable price. With Volkswagen, Subaru, Ford and sister company Hyundai offering full-sized SUV’s, Kia’s come out of the paddock with a strong, smart and stylish option for those in this emerging market. Expect to see an ever-growing number of Tellurides on the road in the coming months as Kia keeps rolling out impressive machines.

In conversation with Mississauga’s Tania Kolar about success, obstacles and advice for others. HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN AN ENTREPRENEUR FOR? Over two years. WHEN AND WHERE DID YOU COME UP WITH THE QUOTE OF "YOUR DARKEST MOMENTS BRING THE MOST ILLUMINATE TEACHINGS"? When I started writing Breaking The Stupid Mold. Upon reflection of the challenges I have faced, I realized that negative experiences are temporary and will eventually shift. With darkness comes light. WHAT'S BEEN THE SINGLE BIGGEST OBSTACLE IN YOUR ENTREPRENEURIAL CAREER? Encountering delays when relying on other people and realizing that they are not and will never be as vested you are. As an entrepreneur you have high expectations so it’s a challenge having to make peace with the fact that most people don’t share your passion. WHAT'S BEEN THE MOST REWARDING ASPECT OF WHAT YOU DO? Taking my clients from where they are to where they want to be and empowering others to achieve their goals and witnessing a positive transformation. WHAT'S ONE COMMON MISCONCEPTION ABOUT THE LIFE COACHING INDUSTRY? That a coach is an adviser and will tell clients what to do. The client inherently has the ability to determine and achieve their goals. A coach works in partnership with the client to facilitate change and achieve goals.
MODERN ENTREPRENEUR Tania Kolar 20 MODERN MISSISSAUGA | LATE SUMMER 2019
WHAT PROMPTED YOU TO WRITE AND PUBLISH YOUR BOOK? In 2006, I was the victim of a violent attack. Although it was a traumatic experience, I found the benefit in my suffering. I learned a great deal about myself and was able to break negative patterns and beliefs, and I want to teach others to do the same. WHAT ONE PIECE OF ADVICE DO YOU HAVE FOR OTHER ENTREPRENEURS? Start and persevere. Remember why you are doing what you are setting out to accomplish. If you focus on why you are doing something, the how will reveal itself. WHAT THREE THINGS ARE ESSENTIAL TO YOUR DAILY LIFE? Gratitude, affirmations and working out. Every morning, I write down all the things I am grateful for and then head to the gym. I use affirmations and “affirmitudes” throughout my day, which is an affirmation with an attitude of gratitude. My book has a chapter on affirmitudes which you can use any time you want to shift your emotional state, increase your consciousness and improve spiritual well-being, and/or affirm what you desire while expressing gratitude at the same time. HOW DO YOU WANT TO BE REMEMBERED? As someone who inspires the masses and makes an indelible difference in the lives of others.

Interior Design Trends by sam mcdadi |

Whether you’re planning to sell your home right away or you want a home interior makeover that’ll give you a reason to stay in your home, here are some top design trends for your major rooms. KITCHENS GO DARK FOR ULTRA-RICH LOOK The kitchen, which is arguably the heart of the home, has been dominated by dazzling whites and other sunny hues for years. Dark colors are the new sought-after shades for cabinetry and appliances. Cabinets that are painted dark blues, greens, and plums give kitchens a super-luxurious looks. Take this trend to the extreme, and you’ll see all-black kitchens that feature black stainless steel appliances. BATHROOMS WARM UP FOR TECH Splashes of warm colors make bathrooms glow. You’ll see terracottacolored tiles on backsplashes, flooring and tub surrounds. A matte finish differentiates this modern trend from the one that you experienced a few decades ago. In addition to warmer tones on walls, floors, and cabinets, modern bathrooms feature more integrated technology than ever. For example, vanity mirrors double as computer and phone screens that allow you to get the latest traffic and weather updates while you floss. BEDROOMS GO SOFT AND SUSTAINABLE Simple, clean-line designs are in. Designers will replace those straight-backed desks, chairs, and beds of conventional minimalist
designs with softer curves and cushions. You’ll see upholstered headboards on beds and fixtures that are made of sustainable materials. Cork board wall paneling, bamboo flooring, and wool rugs are prominent aspects. LIVED-IN LOOKS FOR LIVING ROOMS PREVAIL Living rooms are becoming more relaxed spaces. You’ll see these spaces outfitted with genuine or faux wood ceiling beams that offer a rustic look. Designers will use vintage furniture in these spaces that appeal to the modern homeowner’s desire to live more sustainably. Those pieces will be accented with new furnishings that feature modern materials and textures. Designers will also use distressed-looking decorations that seem to have an interesting backstory to enhance living room interiors. Many home buyers will prefer living rooms that are separated from other rooms in a house over open-space versions when they’re available. These buyers want living rooms that aren’t affected by the noise and smells of nearby kitchens and dining rooms. CREATION OF RELAXATION SPACES The current trend is that designers expect more homeowners to create private nooks where they can relax at home and not at expensive day spas. These alcoves have lots of greenery and are often positioned away from electrical outlets to discourage electronic distractions. You don’t need a lot of room to create these havens. You can transform the space under your staircase or near a large window into a cozy reading nook.

22 MODERN MISSISSAUGA | LATE SUMMER 2019
We live in the age of data and yet it feels as though every few months, our data-fueled world is falling apart. Elections are being swayed, personal information hacked, interests manipulated, and privacy disrespected. If any of these things bother you, then it’s up to you to take a stance and make some decisions about your own digital footprint. To get you started, here are a few tips:
Use a Password Manager Consistently cited as one of the most important things you can do to reduce your online risk exposure, password managers also come with the added benefit of not
having to remember the ridiculous combinations of numbers, letters, and that weird thing from your childhood that you happen to use for one of your literally hundreds of passwords. Reusing passwords is a surefire way to get yourself pwned, but with services like Lastpass, 1Password, or Bitwarden, you only have to ever remember one master password; just be sure it’s damned good.
Know Your Apps At least two or three times per year, I find myself doing a bit of ‘digital spring cleaning’. This typically entails going through all apps on my phone and asking the question, “how often do I actually use this?” (note: Android even provides you with the exact date you last used all of your apps). However, even for apps that I use regularly, I look at the company who makes that apps and ask myself what kind of digital citizen they’ve been in the world. It was questions like this that got me off Facebook and eventually had me switch from Whatsapp to Signal. The digital ecosystem is big enough
now that for just about any app that you want to get rid of, there’s going to be a good replacement.
Opt-Out And for those evil behemoths that you simply can’t part with (why can’t I quit you, Google?) you can choose to take the time and lock things down. Though they’re typically hidden away in the dark corners of their support pages, nearly all digital services have a whole host of settings you can use to reduce their ability to track, monitor, and engage with you. Google’s MyAccount lets you view, limit, and delete huge aspects of your digital footprint and even Facebook settings can be tuned to dial Zuckerberg back… albeit only a little. However, most importantly, you should begin to approach the online world with a bit more skepticism and start asking the question, “who stands to benefit from this?” Sadly, longgone are the days of an open, free, and curious internet. Your data is now big business and though sometimes it’s easy to feel helpless… you’re still the one in charge of it.

RA PTOR REFLECTIONS: WHAT I LEARNED FROM THE 2019 NBA CHAMPIONSHIP by john murray lewis |
photo courtesy of ryan on unsplash
The Raptors' historical championship run electrified our country like never before, providing a welcome distraction from our national pastime of waiting for Mitch Marner to sign. As I reflect on those two magical months, I realize we learned so much: about basketball, about the Raptors, even... about ourselves.
Here are my personal "The More You Know" moments from the 2019 NBA Playoffs. 1. Most people assume that basketball
was invented by Larry Bird, but it was actually invented by a Canadian! Many years ago, a humble man left his country to find fame and fortune south of the border. His name was Keanu Reeves, and he changed the sporting world forever.
2. For many, the defining shot of the 2019 playoffs was Kawhi Leonard's buzzer-
24 MODERN MISSISSAUGA | LATE SUMMER 2019
beater to win game 7 of the Eastern Conference Semifinals against the Philadelphia 76ers. One bounce, then another, and another, and another, and then... Raptors win! As incredible as it seems, this kind of shot happens all the time. It's called a "field goal" and is worth two points if scored from inside the three-point line.
3. By winning the NBA Finals, the Raptors unseated one of the most dominant NBA dynasties of all time, the Golden State Warriors. Did the dynasty end with the final buzzer of game 6, or when Kevin Durant went down in game 5? Neither. In reality, the dynasty ended 26 minutes into game 4, when Steph Curry's contract with Satan expired. 4. Despite what MLSE would have you believe, there is no paleontological evidence to suggest that velociraptors (V. mongoliensis)--or dinosaurs of any
kind, in fact--ever played basketball. A far more accurate name for our team would be "Basketball-Playing Professional Athletes."
5. Who's to blame for Kawhi's departure?
Turns out, it could be us. Sources tell me that Uncle Dennis became paranoid that Mississauga is a "haunted den of malcontent spirits and revenant ghouls" on a midnight trip to Wally's. A few days later, Kawhi signed with the Clippers. But come on, what's more likely... Uncle Dennis wanted out of Toronto, or we're all trapped in some kind of eerie Sixth Sense scenario?
6. Speaking of Kawhi, you may think he's the only reason we won. But what if I told you... there never was any "Kawhi"? Go back and watch the game tapes if you don't believe me. The championship was inside us all along! Well, unless we're ghosts.

HABITAT HALTON-MISSISSAUGA REVI VE
by olivia kabelin |
CENT R E
At Habitat Halton-Mississauga, we’re always looking for ways to be innovative, which is why we opened our ReVive Centre (RC) two years ago. ReVive is Habitat HM’s exclusive upcycling centre, where we take would-be trash and turn it into DIY-ed treasure. Ontario’s landfills are expected to reach capacity by 2032, which is a troubling trend to Habitat HM. Within the consumerist society we live in, we’re accustomed to the conventional lifecycle of an item: we buy it, keep it around until we get tired of it, throw it to the curb and move onto the next item. With our RC, we hope to challenge this mindset. Inside our workshop, every old item has a promising future and by the time we’re
done with it, you would never guess it was once considered trash. Along with reviving furniture, we also build new pieces using recycled and donated materials from the community. Using recycled lumber allows us to help reduce our community’s carbon footprint. Even a leftover two-by-four from a Habitat build site will be given a second chance. Whether its transformed into a shelving unit, rustic décor or a wine rack, its journey doesn’t end in the landfill. Items that come out of our workshop go into our ReStores, where they’re sold at affordable prices to families and individuals within our community. This revenue is used to cover Habitat HM’s costs of office administration. With these
necessary expenses off our plate, we can focus on what we do best: building. Our social enterprises like the ReStore and RC allow us to ensure that 100 percent of every dollar donated to our organization goes directly into our fund to build affordable housing. The majority of pieces we upcycle in the RC are old items donated to our ReStores that need some new life breathed into them. Please help us divert waste from landfills so we can create stunning and affordable items for local families and help us to expand affordable housing within our community, all by donating your used pieces of furniture. Give us a call at 905-637-4446 ext. 427 to donate today! habitathm.ca/revive-centre/

HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN IN BUSINESS? 10 years. We’re excited with our new direction, new look and new brand. WHERE DID THE NAME ORIGINATE FROM? Everyone calling us Amazing “Grace.” When our charcuterie tables took a different direction, we watched people socializing, interacting, and eating our food, and that brought us back to our family tables growing up. It’s about food and family without any judgement. WHAT ARE SOME OF YOUR SIGNATURE MENU ITEMS? We are known for our sweet and savory table,

Watching people gather and eat together, plus their expressions and positive comments about our food, décor, and attention to detail. WHAT’S BEEN THE LARGEST HURDLE TO OVERCOME? Making the decision to step out of our commercial kitchen and obtaining a retail space. We want to find the right location to serve and connect with the community through the universal language of food. WHAT DOES 2020 LOOK LIKE? We are developing new items for our menu and taking old favorites to make them appreciated once again.
WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO START THE BUSINESS? My Mother. It was a joy to watch her feed our family and friends as everyone happily gathered around her table. Being a single mom didn’t stop her from showing us that quality and traditional foods still exist and should be enjoyed. WHY DID YOU SET UP YOUR BUSINESS IN MISSISSAUGA? We are from Mississauga and the clients who embrace us and support our vision are from Mississauga. We feel the love and are excited to continue to serve our community.
