MODERN ARTIST: Ajay Massey of U.N. Jefferson

by jay kana | photo courtesy of cory downing 1. How long have you been an active musician?

I started playing guitar and joined my first band in high school (90’s) and I’ve been making music and playing shows ever since.

2. What's the most rewarding aspect of what you do? Being able to create art and entertain people is very rewarding to me. I also value the connections I’ve made with people I’ve met over the years.

3. How would you describe your sound?

6. What succinct advice do you have for developing musicians?

Get out and play as much as you can and build relationships with others in the music community. Believe in what you do, stick to your vision and give it all you’ve got.

7. What does 2020 look like for you?

Playing as much as possible, spreading the word and making people move.

Our music is inspired by the vintage sounds of classic Soul artists like James Brown, The Temptations, and Wilson Pickett. We draw from everything that Soul music has to offer, from early R&B and Funk to elements of Jazz and Gospel.

8. What three things can you not live without?

4. Where do you draw lyrical inspiration from?

It was amazing! It’s a great feeling to know that people are into what you do. My mom was in the audience that night with a big smile on her face and that made it even better.

Sometimes the ideas behind the lyrics come from personal experiences, while other times they come from things I see or hear in my interactions with other people. It usually ends up being a combination of the two.

5. Where did the name "U.N. Jefferson" come from? I heard it in a movie when I was growing up. I always thought it sounded great and it just stuck with me. When it came time to name the band, I thought it was perfect.

A guitar, good food and good company.

9. "Testify" won song of the year - Describe how you felt when you won.

10. Scale of 1-10: How cool was it to get a shoutout from Alan Cross?

I’d give that an 11! I’ve always been a huge fan of his. It was a little surreal to have someone as influential as him show the band some love on such a big scale. It definitely meant a lot to us. unjefferson.com Listen to them on Spotify and Apple Music

Mississauga Symphony An exciting Spring with the

by ryan tobin

The Mississauga Symphony Orchestra (MSO) began the 2019/20 concert season with a wonderful mixture of fantastic performances and notable achievements. The MSO and MSYO drew nearly 6,000 people to all performances in the first half of the season, including a sold out opening night of La Traviata, a fully-staged opera in January of 2019. Thanks to our friends at Mississauga’s Culture Division, our live Facebook stream of A Merry Little Christmas, our sold out, family friendly Christmas concert, was viewed by supporters

around the world, including the United States, Czech Republic, Argentina and Hungary. February of 2020 saw the orchestra team with the three time Juno nominated Sultans of String for a fantastic fusion of world music and orchestral brilliance. The spring of 2020 promises to continue the momentum with programming for all musical tastes. On March 28, the orchestra presents Music by Request, a concert programmed with symphonic masterworks chosen by our audience. On April 25, the

orchestra kicks into hyperdrive to reach your favourite galaxy far, far away. From the Imperial March to the Throne Room End Title, our Star Wars concert will feature music from cinema’s greatest space opera. Keep in touch. The Mississauga Symphony Orchestra prides itself on being an open and approachable organization. WARMING UP TO QUEBEC’S LEGENDARY

HOTEL DE 18 MODERN MISSISSAUGA | WINTER 2020

Winters in Quebec has always created marvelous memories, fantastic friendships, and astounding adventures for me. This year, I was able to cross a long-standing item off my experience list – sleeping in the world-famous Hotel de Glace. After a thorough breakdown of the coolest hotel on earth, I’ve also shared my dog sledding experience, along with a couple of culinary choices and a new, modern hotel that’s not made from ice.

GLACE

HOTEL DE GLACE – OOH LA LA!

As someone who wears thermal underwear/Long John’s anytime the weather is colder than 7 Celsius, I’m a fan of being warm as often as possible during winter. Even short jaunts to the grocery store with the closest parking spot to the doors require proper winter attire for me. Here’s a better way to put it: I truly dislike being cold… but I love winter… as long as I’m bundled up. On the flipside, Quebec is one of my favourite travel spots in the world, so when the invite came to spend a night sleeping in the world famous Hotel de Glace, it was a simple and immediate “oui oui oui!” Located just north of Quebec City in the beautiful Village Vacances Valcartier, Hotel de Glace spans a whopping 42,000 square feet and is created with 30,000 tonnes of snow. The floor is three feet thick and made with 10,000 tonnes of snow and ice and there’s a 10 km of wires woven throughout the structure for light and power, all of which is hidden from sight. Upon first sight, it looks magnificent, especially at night when illuminated. The chapel doors are to the right and the main entrance is to the left and yes, seeing as I said chapel, you’re able to get married there via a unique, memorable ceremony. The detailed exterior brickwork pattern first hinted at just how much work went in to creation, and as I delved further into the frosty labyrinth, the more impressed and astounded I was. As you enter, you’re greeted with a few steps that once you ascend, will lead you to the astonishing Ice Bar, complete with incredibly intricate design work, lights, music and of course, a variety of cool drinks served up in glasses made of ice. In fact, there will

be over 200,000 of the ice glasses used this year! 2020 sees Hotel de Glace celebrate their 20 anniversary and to commemorate it, 20 of their 42 rooms boast a theme from all previous years. These themes include Splendours of the Arctic, Aztecs and Incas, African Safari, 20,000 leagues under the sea, circus, dinosaurs, Indigenous peoples, music, Rodin’s sculpture gardens, historic Quebec City, and many others. It’s not only the rooms that have all the attention; the walls and halls have plenty of décor to fill your Instagram feed from astrology, history, animals and more. My favourite wall sculpture was that of nearly a full sized blue whale and calf. The amount of work the 50 sculptors and 18 builders invested is simply sheer artistic brilliance. Its permanent home has been at Valcartier since 2016 and has made previous stops in Duchesnay, Charlesbourg and the Montmorency area. Make sure your camera is fully charged with plenty of space as it’s easy to capture a few hundred images and video during your visit.

HOW TO SLEEP IN HOTEL DE GLACE

Yes, I slept in the Hotel de Glace. I couldn’t write a feature article for you without having the authentic experience, right? Right. The very knowledgeable and friendly team has you well covered regarding full preparations for your night, starting with a mandatory training class, which ran for about 30 minutes. This is the most important part of your experience because if you don’t use all their advice and techniques, well…just do everything that they say; let’s keep it at that. Relatively speaking, the rooms aren’t all that cold – remember that you’re “indoors.” The room temperature is between -3 Celsius and -5 Celsius regardless of the outside temperature. Your bed has a foundation of ice blocks, then there’s a solid wood base, and you sleep on an actual mattress. Show this paragraph

20 MODERN MISSISSAUGA | WINTER 2020

to anyone claiming you “sleep on a block of ice.” There’s a curtain instead of a door so you have an element of privacy. The reason there’s no conventional swinging/sliding door is that because all the rooms are so quiet, if anyone was ever in distress, it’d be hard to hear them ask for help. Smartly, there’s also staff that walk the halls overnight to ensure anyone that does need help receives it. Prepping for bed is more than brushing your teeth and making sure all the lights are off. The right attire is paramount for comfort and a three-layer approach is recommended. The interior layer (what touches your skin) has to be synthetic or made of a wool blend. Do not wear cotton as it retains moisture/ humidity, which will quickly chill you if you start sweating. The middle has to isolate air. Wool, flannel, or a polar fleece sweater works best. The exterior layer has to ensure comfort and movement as it’ll help keep you comfortable as you sleep. Wearing a toque will keep your body warm, as 80% of your body heat escapes from your head if left uncovered. I’d suggest wearing a scarf and gloves/mittens to keep your extremities warm.

WHAT I WORE

Two pairs of thick socks, my favourite pair of long John’s (long Jay’s?) jeans, snow pants, a moisture wicking t-shirt, a wool sweater, my big winter jacket, a toque, scarf and my winter gloves. The benefit of wearing so much is that like an onion, it’s got layers that can be removed if you overheat. Remember – sweating is the enemy of comfort. Thankfully, my body and I get along well and I was perfectly comfortable the entire night. In fact, I had one of the most restful sleeps outside of my own bed (which I love oh-so much.) If I did overheat, I’d take my scarf off first, then unzip my jacket, then snow pants and that would’ve cooled me down.

THE SLEEPING BAG

You’re given a sleeping bag (various sizes available) made to resist temperatures of up to -30 Celsius, which is plenty warm. Plus, you’re given a fleece bed sheet to wrap yourself in first…layers, remember? Pro-tip: remove your boots, stand on the bed and quickly scoot into your bed sheet wrap, then slide in your sleeping bag, zip it up and you’re all set. The coldest part of my experience was the few seconds where I had no boots on and even then, it was a “cool” feeling, opposed to “cold.”

WHAT IF I… NEED THE BATHROOM: There’s heated

portable toilets just outside the many exits.

AM TOO COLD & CAN’T WARM UP:

Your stay in an ice room includes a non-ice room at Valcartier, which is a 53 second walk, 34 second jog or 13 second run from the main exit of Hotel de Glace.

AM WARM & COMFORTABLE BUT CAN’T SLEEP:

There are outdoor saunas and hot tubs that you can enjoy. It’s a long shot but I figure I’d mention it. I’d suggest doing those before bed so you can fully dry off and then tuck in for the night. (As in go in the hot tub and or enjoy the dry sauna, go in the regular hotel to dry off and change and then go to bed). It’s open from 9 pm to 9 am.

AM A HEAVY SLEEPER:

There are three wake-up calls done by staff as there are daily tours happening at 10 am.

You’ve got to be up and out by 9:00 so they can tidy up the room and make the bed.

WANT TO HAVE SOMEONE WITH ME IN A ROOM BUT NOT IN THE SAME BED:

Some rooms have two or three beds.

WANT A SPECIFIC THEMED ROOM:

Give them a shout and see if your dates and preferences can be blended.

MY SLEEPING EXPERIENCE

I posted a video to my personal social media accounts with clips of both before bed and a few minutes after waking up. I had such a wonderful, restful sleep. I dressed appropriately, didn’t wake up once, stopped

drinking fluids two hours before bed, ate a granola bar an hour before bed and did was I was told to by staff. I usually sleep in a shirt and shorts year round so having all those layers was a bit cumbersome for a minute. The tranquility, silence and cool air combined for ideal sleeping conditions. As an active musician for more than half my life, I slept in the “Jazz” room, which happens to be the only room that has an option for sound.

WHAT HAPPENS TO IT ONCE THE SEASON ENDS?

Speaking with the talented Marie-Eve Doyon from their team, she says:

“Hôtel de Glace is one of, if not the only, completely recyclable and reusable building in the world. At the end of the season, we take five days to remove everything that is not ice or snow (wires, lighting, room signs, mattresses) and we’ll reuse these next year. We then bring in the heavy machinery and proceed to collapse the structure in about 5 hours. The ice and snow, including all the used ice glasses from the bar, will melt and go back to the river located behind Hôtel de Glace, just in time for us to open the summer water park!” Full marks for adding an eco-friendly touch to a world-class attraction. With certainty, I can say that experiencing Hotel de Glace was flawless. The team was incredibly friendly, fun and knowledgeable, the atmosphere was exciting, and the precision of the snow/ice carvings were/are extraordinary. valcartier.com/en/accommodations/ice-hotel/

22 MODERN MISSISSAUGA | WINTER 2020

When you’re not sleeping and marveling at Hotel de Glace, head east for about 30 minutes and experience excitement via dog sledding at Aventures Nord-Bec Stoneham. This first-rate facility always has the dog’s best interests at heart and they’re incredibly well cared for. With nearly 100 dogs, each dog can do three sessions/runs that last up to forty minutes each per day, with at least an hour of rest between. Each sled has two “lead” dogs, which are exceptionally smart and well trained. With two people to a sled, one driver and one passenger (one if you want to go solo) the person on the rear (driver) controls the steering via reigns, an easy-to-use foot brake, and a few simple verbal commands. I found it easy to control the sled as 24 powerful legs carried me forward and carving the glistening snow between rural Quebec’s elegant scenery. Speed-wise on a straight-away, the dogs can exceed 20 km/h, which makes for terrific video clips. I was assured that the dogs are never over-worked and enjoy being out in the snow, and it showed by their enthusiasm on the route. traineaux-chiens.com In the heart of Quebec City is one of my favourite restaurants, the multiple award-winning Légende. It’s stylish, upscale yet easily approachable. Paying homage to their ancestors and honouring, culinary history from the first nations to the present day, their menu is creative, local and fresh. Their menu changes often, due to the chef’s creativity with a variety of meats, vegetables and wine pairings. The most impressive aspect is the service – my waiter was friendly, engaging, and knowledgeable as he walked me though how and why the dishes were created the way they were. With a tasting menu, you’ll get a delicious array of what they’ve got to offer – I highly recommend it.

Another hot-spot for a meal is the gorgeous Hôtel Entourage sur-le-Lac in Lac-Beauport, a short drive from either Quebec City or Hotel de Glace. Yes, it’s a breathtaking resort, complete with picturesque views, 166 rooms, and they’re commitment to health is superb… but their dining options are wonderful! Their on-site restaurant, L’îlot Repère Gourmand Restaurant, serves up a mouthwatering trifecta of European inspired fare, international cuisine influence and most importantly, created with local ingredients. entourageresort.com After my time at Hotel de Glace, I spent one night in a new hotel in Old Quebec City, Monsieur Jean. The modern design along with some cool quirks help make it unique. The lobby has books to read, board games to play and can be used as a comfortable work space. All rooms have a kitchenette, king bed and heated tile bathroom floor, along with massive windows that showcase wonderful views of the city. monsieurjean.ca

LUMIÈRE FESTIVAL photo courtesy of benoit rousseau Since its inaugural edition in 2000, every year MONTRÉAL EN LUMIÈRE (MEL) offers residents and visitors to the city hundreds of delicious activities to enjoy.

All told, over 600 special guests from the culinary world, from more than 20 countries, have come to celebrate the best of what Quebec gastronomy has to offer: its chefs, producers, artisans, and culinary culture.

26 MODERN MISSISSAUGA | WINTER 2020

Even though MEL turned 20 last year, it has proven itself capable of adapting to the major trends of a world that is constantly evolving – as evidenced by the new additions to last year’s festival, which are back on the menu for its 21st outing. First course: the Nuit Gourmande, presented by Casino de Montréal in collaboration with Air France, which takes place on February 22. Fresh from its successful first edition last year, this unique event allows festivalgoers to discover Montreal’s rich food culture throughout the night. Second course: Tastet Culinary Tours, which offer new food-themed walks, created exclusively for the festival Third course: the Quartier Gourmand, a place dedicated to gastronomy, where the produce and producers of Quebec converge with major food trends and the flavours of international cuisine. Main course: Air France Finest Tables is back, even bigger than before, as 50 of our finest restaurants take part in the 21st edition of the festival. Finally, for dessert, you’re presented with a new magazine put together by the people at Caribou, who they are proud to be working with. One of MEL’s strengths is knowing how to surround themselves with incredible partners. As the saying goes: together we are stronger.

A FREE, FUN OUTDOOR SITE

The outdoor site offers a multitude of free activities for all. During the festival, the Quartier des spectacles and its Place des Festivals—the headquarters of downtown celebrations— become THE essential winter destination. • An extraordinary program circuit of interactive and luminous works: Illuminart • A Québec Maple Ferris wheel • A wild 110-meter descent (360-feet) in the Milk Urban Slide • Free shows • Food kiosks for gourmet pit stops • The Most Awaited Night of the Year

As the best-attended single-day event in Montréal every year, Nuit blanche assembles 300,000 nighthawks who brave winter temperatures to fully experience a singularly wild urban adventure. Happening on Saturday, February 29th, the Metro will be open all night especially for the occasion!—and dive into some of our 200 cultural activities, most of them free, spread over more than 150 places throughout the city. This Nuit, as usual, promises to be dazzling! montrealenlumiere.com

“If you always do what you’ve always done, you’ll always get what you’ve always got.” — Henry Ford 28 MODERN MISSISSAUGA | WINTER 2020

SSAUGA MEDIA WENT

I G I T A L

23 print issues over four years in Mississauga as an independent media company is something I will always be proud of. It was peculiar that in 2015, Mississauga didn’t have a city-wide magazine. We’re Canada’s sixth largest city – and there’s so much to celebrate year round that’s more than sensationalized, clickbait laced headlines. Having an extensive media background, paired with several years in print, led me to launch Modern Mississauga Media, complete with a bi-monthly print magazine for our city to read and enjoy. The magazine was well received and as of issue two, was in all 18 city libraries, along with numerous other locations across the city.

So what changed? Why did I restrategize and pivot to a 100% digital, interactive magazine? Simply put – the complex media world is shifting and I have to deliver what my readers want in a smart, interactive medium. For me, continuing with print would eventually solidify the law of diminishing returns. Here’s a breakdown of why why Modern Mississauga Media went 100% digital:

CONTINUED...

MODERN MISSISSAUGA | WINTER 2020 29

m oder nFE AT U RE

. . . C ONTI N U ED INCREASED ENGAGEMENT THROUGH AN INTERACTIVE DIGITAL MAGAZINE

INCREASED DEMAND FOR VIDEO & PHOTOGRAPHY

With print, it was one-dimensional – you’d read the magazine and then put it down. Perhaps you’d read it a few times and if s omething appealed to you, you’d go online and learn more. With the new interactive digital magazine, there are clickable links embedded within the articles and advertisements. There’s also videos embedded within the magazine to further enhance your experience. If you’re reading about a travel destination, for example, with one click, you’re taken directly to that destinations website.

2018 and 2019 illustrated a massive increased demand for me to create video and photography for my clients and readers, while still having the team write remarkable articles. In fact, our YouTube subscribers have nearly quadrupled over the past 12 months.

INCREASED FLEXIBILITY WITH A DIGITAL MAGAZINE

The harsh reality is that there are zero guaranteed metrics with print. There are many factors that can indicate some measurability; however it’s impossible to accurately state true, honest metrics. The digital world allows that with a wide swath of information on readers/readership. Analytics, ROI and transparency are crucial in the media world and this allows me to create stronger relationships with a variety of businesses in and outside of our city.

In the print world, magazines with a page count in multiples of eight was the most cost-effective route. A 28 page magazine can cost much more than a 32 page magazine. With digital, I’m now able to have full flexibility in page count, meaning that there can be more detailed stories, more images and videos.

30 MODERN MISSISSAUGA | WINTER 2020

ACCURATE MEASURABILITY FOR ADVERTISING PARTNERS

ECONOMICS Printing and mailing a magazine is expensive, and my costs went up every year. I slightly increased investment points in year three but after a thorough review, higher prices for a product that had a declining demand simply did not make sense to continue with.

ENVIRONMENTAL ASPECT I’ve printed a lot of magazines in four years and with the transition to fully digital, there’ll be a few more trees in the world.

LOWER INVESTMENT POINTS ENABLE MODERN MISSISSAUGA MEDIA TO PARTNER WITH MORE BUSINESSES Digital investment points are up to 75% less expensive than they were in print. This makes it much easier for me to partner with small and medium sized businesses to help them grow.

There were dozens of instances of businesses wanting to work with Modern Mississauga Media but the barrier was cost. Add in a much wider reach with digital and it’s more enticing to work together.

DECLINING DEMAND FOR PRINT Mississauga lost two magazines in autumn of 2019, the only local newspaper cut their number of weekly issues cut by 50%, and there’s been a constant decline in demand for this medium. Between social media, websites and digital publications, information is able to be accessed immediately. Similarly to the cassette tape, VHS machine and manual transmissions, the popularity and interest simply isn’t there for consumers. If you have any questions or comments on the shift to 100% digital, I welcome them via email at jay@modernmississauga.com I do hope that you’ll join the team and I on this next exciting chapter of Mississauga’s magazine as we continue to share the stories that help make our community valuable.

6 Tips on Finding Your Dream Job by marc belaiche | photo courtesy of sithamshu manoj on unsplash With the job market being one of the strongest in years, there’s no better time to be looking for a new position than right now. Here are 6 tips of how to find your dream job. 1. MAKE SURE YOUR LINKEDIN PROFILE IS UP TO DATE There are so many benefits to having an up-to-date Linkedin profile in order for recruiters to find you. Make sure that your Linkedin profile has keywords that recruiters would search. 2. DON’T GHOST EMPLOYERS We’re seeing it all the time now - a candidate doesn’t show up for an interview, stops replying to messages from employers or other similar tactics with no explanation. This is only hurting you. While you might think “It won’t matter”, most employers have databases that keep track of candidate activity, including those that don’t show up for interviews. That recruiter who you don’t respond to will make a note in their database that you disappeared so you might be blacklisted from ever working at that company in the future. In addition, if that recruiter moves on to another company you’ll probably be blacklisted from ever working at that other company also.

6. BE PROFESSIONAL – Check your resume for spelling mistakes, dress appropriately for interviews, show interest in the position, have references ready and send a thank you letter after an interview. A candidate who shows that they’re ready generally gets a better chance of getting hired. TorontoJobs.ca helps job seekers find jobs through their recruiting division, job board and job fairs. Visit www.TorontoJobs.ca to see how they can help you find your next dream job or email resumes@torontojobs.ca. Pick up a copy of “Tales from the Recruiter – A Canadian Recruiter’s Perspective on How to Get that Perfect Job” at www.TalesfromtheRecruiter.ca.

3. GO TO JOB FAIRS – It’s a great way to meet recruiters and find out what jobs are in demand. Make sure to bring lots of resumes! 4. POST YOUR RESUME ON JOB BOARDS – Make sure your resume is up-to-date on job boards and sign up for job alerts. 5. NETWORK – The majority of jobs (some studies indicate up to 80%) are found through the hidden job market. Those are jobs that are never advertised. Make sure to build/grow/nurture your contacts as they can be a great source of leads for new positions.

WITH GLOBAL PET FOODS

As the winter season winds down and spring begins to approach, there are many considerations to ensure you are prepared for the transition. Global Pet Foods has all the necessities and knowledge to help you during this time of year. GROOMING SUPPLIES Seasonal shedding and wet conditions combine to create one of the most difficult grooming seasons of the year. Make sure you have the right brushes for your pet’s coat type to keep them tidy and comfortable during shedding. Stock up on pet specific shampoos that cater to your pet’s needs, from conditioning dry skin to odour elimination. Grooming mitts, wipes and towels offer easy, everyday cleaning for your pets going in and out of the house. O U T D O O R P R OT E C T I O N As temperatures begin to rise, pests that have been dormant through the winter start to become active again. It is important to be prepared early with preventatives and repellents for fleas, ticks and other insects. Protective apparel to keep your pets clean and safe from insects can be very effective. Additionally, if you are spending more time outdoors with your pet, reflective gear is always recommended. If your pet is spending time outside in the wet weather, a waterproof collar is a more hygienic option than a standard nylon collar that holds water and can harbor bacteria and fungus. N U T R I T I O N A L C O N S I D E R AT I O N S Sometimes when the seasons change, nutritional requirements will change. Many pets are less active during the winter and are consuming fewer calories to maintain their body condition. As the weather warms up, pets that begin to increase their activity may require more calories or perhaps a different nutrient balance to support their fitness. This is also a good time of year to consider incorporating a mobility supplement into the diet of large dogs, older pets or pets that are at risk for mobility issues. NEW PRODUCTS New seasons bring with them exciting new products. Visit your local Global Pet Foods store regularly to see all the new toys, treats and apparel that come available this season! We are all excited for the arrival of spring and it will be here before we know it. Make sure you are prepared by visiting Global Pet Foods for all the products you need as well as expert advice from knowledgeable staff!

PE E L RE GI ON ' S NE W V OI C E by praveen amirtharaj photo courtesy of claus grünstäudl on unsplash Canada knows a little thing about living next door to a media giant. Peel Region has felt the same way living under Toronto’s enormous “media shadow”. Newstalk Sauga 960AM has finally answered Peel Region’s call for their own voice. Launched in September 2018, Sauga 960AM finally has given residents and businesses of Peel Region their own media platform in a very crowded GTA media landscape. Sauga 960AM’s diverse and eclectic schedule has led its growth and success in the marketplace. Delivering programming that appeals to a broad cross section of the community, the schedule has something for everyone including Sports-talk, Politics, Lifestyle programs focused on Parenting, Food, Gardening and even Relationships. Familiar voices and faces to GTA audiences like Raw Mike Richards, Barry Davis, Norm Murray, Marc Patrone and Karlene Nation, Sauga 960AM have immediately captured the attention of listeners both in Peel Region and across the GTA. Sauga 960AM is also the host broadcaster for all Mississauga Steelheads hockey games and all home games for the Raptors 905 of the NBA’s G League. As a strong advocate for the West End commuter, Sauga 960AM reports on the most detailed West end traffic during the morning and afternoon commutes Monday thru Sunday with their exclusive “Traffic on the 5’s” reports. Joty Pannu, Sauga 960's General Manager, understands the importance of helping get people around the region especially in and out of GTA’s most mobile region, “We want to educate our listeners too,” Pannu said. “There’s a lot going on in the world and sometimes, it’s hard to keep up. Whether you have access to a phone, laptop, computer, podcasts or the radio, Sauga 960AM wants to be there for our audiences”.

Sauga 960 has an estimated weekly reach of 55,000 listeners, nearly quadrupling their audiences when they launched a year ago. In 2020, Pannu projects further growth in the marketplace as the station continues to entrench themselves into the community and become a relevant and essential daily media voice in Peel Region and the GTA. www.sauga960am.ca

AUTOMATING I know how to control you with a robot. At least, I’m learning to. Though I suppose what I really mean to say is that my robots are learning to. If this doesn’t scare you, it should. Not because we suddenly have technology that we can use to subtly manipulate people into doing what we want them to do – we’ve had that for years. Nor should you be afraid of the access we now have to each person’s most intimate data – that’s nothing all that new, either. No, you should be most disturbed by the fact that our manipulative tools, for the first time in history, are starting to convincingly look, sound, act, and feel human. There are numerous technological advancements enabling this new wave of personalized persuasion. Natural language processing (NLP) and text-to-speech (TTS) technologies have come a long way since the early days of ELIZA and awkward digital voices created by vocoders. Contextual conversation systems are getting

better and better at understanding human intent and are even starting to create imperfections with their own voices to sound more lifelike. Google Duplex, for example, sounds frighteningly human – say what you will about the sources and selective editing of its early demonstrations. A crucial breakthrough in digital voices in recent years has been going beyond correct pronunciation to work on perfecting the vocalics: rate, pitch, inflection, volume, and other aspects of vocal variety, all of which give the voice a richer timber and provide a more realistic experience. From a physical standpoint, we continue to make robots whose features – including their eyes, skin, hair, and teeth – climb higher and higher out of Mori’s Uncanny Valley. Whether it’s Hanson Robotics’ Sophia receiving an honorary citizenship from Saudi Arabia or Hiroshi Ishiguro trolling people at academic conferences by sitting beside his robotic clone, Geminoid HI-1, to see if anyone can tell the difference, our current efforts make a good case for needing a Voight-Kampff test within the next 10 years. Alternatively, the common greeting of “hello” may just slowly be replaced by the question, “are you a robot?” Another key step we’ve taken to creating more lifelike interactions with robots has been incorporating elements of nonverbal communication. Computer vision systems have been slowly learning how to gauge the emotional reactions of humans through facial-expression monitoring and bodylanguage recognition. Meanwhile, engineers

are taking these learnings and embedding digital ticks, flinches, and behaviors back into robots to make them appear equally as lifelike and expressive as their human counterparts. However, the largest leaps forward in recent years have been in what’s going on upstairs (or in the basement, depending on where the designers placed the CPU). Deep-learning-enabled intelligence – while still nowhere near artificial general intelligence (AGI) or a human-like intelligence – is getting good enough for government work (in some cases, literally). Through relatively straightforward learning algorithms, machines are quantifying humans and reducing us to insight-driven personas that are but husks of real human lives. This breakdown allows organizations big and small to understand only a small fraction of each individual – just enough to communicate effectively, and often convincingly, with them. It doesn’t work all the time, and it won’t work forever – but it doesn’t have to in order to influence someone’s purchase decision, sway a voter, or negotiate terms with a buyer. On such a grand scale, even technology with relatively low effectiveness can have a significant global impact. To some of you, this may all sound fascinating and exciting. To others, you may approach these technologies with the same sentiment as I: fear. It is this fear that pushes me to write this article as a cry for help and a call to arms because unfortunately, those in the former group

far outweigh the latter. The core issue is that for each of the small armies working on advancing the technologies described above and for each of the businesses deploying these technologies to excerpt their influence on markets, nation-states, and communities, there is but a handful of ethicists, philosophers, or simply morallyrooted human beings advocating for pause and reflection. But this small, fragmented group is growing tired of playing the moral conscious of the world while organizations blindly charge forward towards a fabled nirvana, leaving our collective conscious feeling like a crazy person standing on a street corner somewhere wearing a sandwich board that simply reads, “what were you thinking?” That simple but elegant question highlights my concern with much of business and engineering culture today. For the unfortunate, knee-jerk response that many individuals have to this question is simply “nothing” as we have shed our gift of reflexivity in exchange for faster and greater productivity. We move faster, carry more, and do more; however, we see less along the way and have neglected the scent of too many passing roses. Our addiction to La Technique –

continued... MODERN MISSISSAUGA | WINTER 2020 47

...continued society’s obsessive focus on hyper-efficiency and productivity pervading every aspect of our functional and social lives – has become unquenchable to the point that we have now created meta-technologies that can optimize our optimization. The reason this concerns me so deeply in the case of robotic and AI technologies is this: until we do a better job of considering and clarifying our moral position on digital persons (a term you should prepare yourself to grow very comfortable with), we have a duty to exercise transparency in the use of automated agents. Google was quick to insist that their Duplex system would first identify itself as a “digital assistant” before speaking to humans, however, beyond its identity, what else should our technologies be transparent about? If we are attempting to recreate human-like relationships, should there not also be a human-like pretense and awareness of power dynamics? Should a digital agent have to state its objectives? Should it identify its patron or owner? Should it reveal what it knows about you and what data it used to draw its conclusions? Should it identify what it is learning about you during the interaction? Should it be able to lie? These are the questions that few organizations have devoted the proper time or resources to considering. I won’t be so naïve as to think that all organizations will choose to answer these questions angelically. However, by recognizing the need for organizations to share their general policy or beliefs around these issues, we could provide individuals the information they need to choose if and how they engage with different organizations and their agents. Without the appropriate information to advise this choice, we essentially leave people with no choice at all. And by ignoring these questions, organizations are essentially leaving their front-line technical developers to make the decisions. These massive engines of productivity have distributed the steering and acceleration tasks across different

48 MODERN MISSISSAUGA | WINTER 2020

sub-components of their vehicles; they have forgone strategic long-term thinking and leadership, instead allowing the technical masses to chaotically determine their – and our – fates. This short-sighted approach will have consequences. Any victories claimed now and in the future will be won with the caveat of the fragile, teetering foundation upon which they are built. Just like Cambridge Analytica getting their hands caught in the big data cookie jar, all organizations engaging in ethically questionable data and automation use are essentially operating on borrowed time.

A company’s efforts to define their stance on automation technologies can be approached as an ethical, cultural, or financial decision – it doesn’t matter, so long as they make those efforts.

The development of these technologies isn’t what’s in question; however, the deployment of them should only happen after a diverse group of people with varying perspectives have given them fair discussion, consideration, and clarification on how they’ll be used. Google’s recent removal of “don’t be evil” from their code of conduct, while disappointing, is perfectly acceptable – so long as in its place, they introduce the transparency and clarity that allows you and I to decide which necessary evils we will tolerate. Likewise, you’re free to be as good or evil as you’d like with automation tech, but opaque deception and manipulation will catch up with you sooner or later. Shane Saunderson researches Human-Robot Interaction at the University of Toronto and goes on intellectual play dates with a variety of organizations and individuals.
