Experience The Lakeshore Art Trail by wendy bowe The Lakeshore Art Trail is a cooperative of visual artists operating in the Port Credit, Clarkson and Lorne Park area. Traditional years saw LAT artists displaying their works from home studios and local businesses along the lakeshore the weekend after Thanksgiving but, with the challenges

of 2020, the 21st Annual Lakeshore Art Trail will be adapting to the current climate of social distancing by holding a Holiday Fine Art Market Online version of the annual tour which will showcase artists' new work.

Those artists include Adriana Rinaldi, Aeri Lee, Cathy Clark, Celina Melo, Doreen Renner, Ed Clark, Gabby Tutak, Gail Backus, Jackie Gallagher, Janice Ykema, Jo Ann Wilton, Joanna Turlej, Joseph Sampson, Leesa Price, Laura Beaton, Marsha Strychasrz, Rosemary Broos, Sandra Robson, Sue Archibald, Sjon de Groot and Wendy Bowe. This list of artists include some of the finest in Mississauga. Fine art in watercolours, oils, acrylic and mix media will be displayed and available for purchase. Private viewings, payments and pick up arrangements can be made with the artist. The Holiday Fine Art Market Online will run from November 14th until December 31st and can be found by visiting www.lakekshorearttrail.com. Simply click on the LAT Holiday Market tab, and then your favourite artists, to be directed to their online shop. A link is available on individual artists shops, bringing you back to the Holiday Fine Art Market Online and the choice of visiting more artist's pages.

MODERN ARTIST:

Describe what you do musically.

I am a producer and a vibes creator. I specialize in setting the tone for creation with the intention of getting the best out an artist. What inspired you to start creating music?

What inspired me to do music was watching my father play drums and the wide variety of music I’d hear at home. What does winning the Mississauga Music award for Producer Of The Year mean to you?

Winning this hometown award means a lot to me. When you’ve travelled far and wide in pursuit of what you love and come home to your home city recognizing you’re hard work is truly something special. From the Masonic Lodge to Celebration Square to this. It really feels good. What's been your biggest musical obstacle and how did you overcome it?

In conversation with Mississauga’s Junia T, winner of the 2020 Mississauga Music Award for Producer of The Year.

My biggest obstacle was the doubt I let live in my head. It took a bunch of trial and error plus supporting to keep me grounded and going towards the goal. What advice do you have for up and coming musicians/artists?

Who you spend most of your time with plays a big role in your growth. Have a solid community of great thinkers and people who enjoy doing the impossible. A team is essential. What plans do you have for 2021?

Doing my best to be present one day at a time :) junia-t.com

MODERN ARTIST:

Paul DeRosa by jay kana In conversation with Mississauga’s Paul DeRosa, winner of the 2020 Mississauga Music Award for Songwriter of The Year. Describe what you do musically.

I am a guitar player / songwriter What inspired you to start creating music?

I remember watching my two older brothers that played in bands when I was a kid and I just followed suit. Music has always been a part of my life. I started writing and performing when I was very young. Most of my song ideas come from life experiences but I always get inspired to write about other people’s life stories as well. What does winning the Mississauga Music award for Songwriter Of The Year mean to you?

Being nominated and winning with all the other amazing artist, was a great feeling. Considering, Mississauga is where I live with my wife and family, it makes it that much more special. What's been your biggest musical obstacle and how did you overcome it?

I believe every musician/songwriter goes through the same issues at times. There comes a moment in your life where you run into a brick wall. The trick is to just keep persevering through and great opportunities will come your way. What advice do you have for up and coming musicians/artists?

The best advice I have for someone starting out is to always put your heart and soul into your music, never give up! Keep knocking on doors, get out there, and get yourself seen. If your work hard at it, opportunities will come your way. What plans do you have for 2021?

For 2021 plans are a full length album. There is also another very special project that I’m involved with, that I’m very excited about, with more details coming soon. paulderosa.com

ONE TANK TRIPS:

ESCAPE TO ELMHIRST’S RESORT THIS WINTER

26 MODERN MISSISSAUGA | HOLIDAY 2020

by jennifer merrick |

photos by jennifer merrick

Dreaming of an escape? We may not be able to fly to Cuba anytime soon, but we can drive less than two hours to Elmhirst’s Resort and find an oasis of calm and a vacation that will relax and recharge our weary city bones. Located in Keene, Ontario, near Peterborough, this 340-acre property on Rice Lake has never been more popular. “Before COVID-19 hit about a third of our guests were American and there were many Europeans as well,” explained Anne Marshall, whose family owns and operates the resort. “Now, it’s almost 100% local, but we’re busier than ever.” Ontarians, myself included, are exploring their backyard and discovering its treasures, and Elmhirst’s Resort is one of them.

STAY

There were 30 self-catering cottages along the lakeshore, all equipped with lake-facing decks, BBQs, living areas with fireplaces and complete kitchens. We stayed at the newly renovated Free Spirit unit, which was fully accessible with ramps and extra-large wheel-chair friendly showers. With three bedrooms and three bathrooms, it was as spacious as it was comfortable. Its best feature, though, was the serene view of Rice Lake from the back patio and large living room windows.

DINE

“It’s all about farm-to-table and being as natural as possible,” explained Anne. The farm, which raised beef cattle, chickens and turkeys, was a big part of the property along with a large garden that produced much of the restaurant’s vegetables and herbs. With ingredients this fresh, it wasn’t surprising the food was so tasty, and we thoroughly enjoyed our meal in Hearthside Dining Room. Tip: save room for their brownies that were well worth every calorie.

PLAY

Escaping takes on a different meaning when we learned about the resort’s latest activity addition -- Escape the Maze experience. A cross between a scavenger hunt and an escape-room puzzle, it was a clever and fun way to explore the property. There was some competition involved as well, and the time to beat was posted by the reception. But we navigated the course at a more leisurely pace and found spots we might have missed otherwise as well as a little about the history of the resort. “After serving as a pilot in WWII, the resort became a full-time occupation for Arthur and his wife MaryBelle,” we read in one clue. This connection to aviation remained an integral part of the resort, and there was a landing strip and the opportunity to take to the skies on sightseeing flights to view the land of shining lakes from above. Other winter activity options included ice skating, snow kiting, sleigh rides and snow shoeing.

INDULGE

German-born Martina Lynde brought European sensibilities and a deep repository of knowledge in herbalism, Chinese medicine, massage and nutrition to the resort’s spa. “My customers come back,” she said and told us about massages that heal, pedicures that last and their new oxygen facials. Treatments could be booked a la carte or as part of a spa package that included accommodation and meals. Tip: book early, as slots fill up quickly especially now with COVID-19 protocols in place. Also be sure to reserve the indoor pool, which now allows only one individual (or one group travelling together) access at one time. Enjoying the pool to ourselves with its view of Rice Lake was a highlight of our stay and one that every guest should take advantage of. A true escape. elmhirst.ca

30 MODERN MISSISSAUGA | HOLIDAY 2020

photos by jennifer merrick

Getting out in nature in the winter requires considerably more effort and definitely more clothes. But not only do winter activities prove you are a true Canadian, they can also improve mental and physical well-being. Here are a few suggestions for some fun outside this winter:

THE BRUCE PENINSULA

Separating Georgian Bay and Lake Huron, the Bruce Peninsula receives the highest snowfall in Southern Ontario with an annual average of 2.5 to 3.5 metres over two months, so it’s well-loved by snowmobiling and snowshoeing enthusiasts. Historically, snowshoes were as important as the canoe as a means of transportation for First Nations in the area. Without them, there are times you’d sink down to your waist in snow. With them on, you can go virtually anywhere. An excellent option is the Bruce Trail, Ontario’s largest and oldest footpath. The section in this region that stretches from Wiarton to Tobermory is arguably the most scenic, with dramatic limestone cliffs and panoramic views. Taylor-Made B &B in Lion’s Head caters to Bruce hikers, and the owners are happy to make recommendations. Eco-Adventures offers guided snowshoeing tours in the region, including treks through Bruce Peninsula National Park in Tobermory to see its famous grotto. Or enjoy a horse-drawn sleigh through a winter wonderland with Dual Acres. www.explorethebruce.com

MACGREGOR POINT PROVINCIAL PARK

Located on the shores of Lake Huron near the town of Port Elgin, this wilderness park has a slew of winter activities but is best known for winter camping and their yurts. There are 16 of these basic accommodations, which can best be described as a cross between a cabin and a tent with a hard floor, heater, an electric outlet, bunk beds and a table and chair. Outside, there’s a gas BBQ and a fire pit. Toilet and shower facilities are available at a nearby comfort station, and campers must supply their own bedding and all other supplies. Don’t forget birdseed. Chickadees will feed from your hands, and against the pure white snow, it’s easy to spot other colourful birds, like blue jays and cardinals. Another great feature is the 400-metre skating trail that winds through the mixed hardwood and evergreen forest, an enchanting experience, especially under the evening stars. Other activities include snowshoeing the Old Shore Trail for atmospheric views of the frozen lake and cross-country skiing. www.ontarioparks.com/park/macgregorpoint

ALGONQUIN PROVINCIAL PARK

At 7,653 square kilometres, Algonquin is Ontario’s largest provincial park and is home to 55 mammal species and more than 140 species of birds. One of the benefits of visiting in winter is the opportunity to see and identify the animal tracks that criss-cross the snowy paths. You’ll see the footprints from small creatures, like squirrels and rabbits, as well as the larger mammals, including deer, moose and wolves. Over 3500 moose and 35 wolf packs live in the park, so the chances of seeing their large prints are high. Seven yurts are available at the Mew Lake Campground, which can be booked through the Ontario Parks website up to five months

in advance. Outfitters like Voyageur Quest offer excursions, and all-inclusive two-night stays in the Algonquin Log Cabin with guided snowshoeing, all meals and equipment. https://www.ontarioparks.com/park/algonquin

Finally, if you’re looking for a shot of adrenalin with your winter adventure, why not try:

DOG SLEDDING: Hike up! Mush! Let’s go! Haliburton Forest offers dog

sledding adventures along with other winter activities in their 80,000-acre private conservation area.

SNOW KITING:

A cross between snowboarding, windsurfing and waterskiing, snow kiting will have you flying across a frozen lake in no time. iKite Canada will supply all the gear you need and a kite and lesson, so you’ll be flying across the frozen lake in no time. Lake Simcoe is one of the most popular locations as it freezes over early.

ICE CLIMBING:

Another activity that is gaining in popularity is ice climbing. Elements Guiding and Yours Outdoors offer lessons and excursions in the Haliburton Highlands that will get you into crampons and scaling icy heights.

COMPARING LEASING VS FINANCING by paulina pojedyniec | photo by erik mclean on unsplash For nearly all of us, an automobile is the second largest purchase we’ll make. With that, there are plenty of options, including sedan or SUV, what features are important, what make and many others. Perhaps the most important one is the financial aspect and deciding what’s right for you between leasing or financing. Let’s look at the benefits of each:

FINANCING

• The vehicle is yours at the end of the financing term • If you drive over 24,000 km yearly, there are no penalties

34 MODERN MISSISSAUGA | HOLIDAY 2020

• There are no extra financial obligations at the end of your term (paying for dings, dents, scratches, damage.) • Easier to customize your vehicle (window tinting, decals, decorations, accessories, etc.) when you own the car.

LEASING

• You’re responsible for a reduced amount of the vehicle (on average between 50-60% of the cost of the vehicle.) • Lease End Protection, a small additional cost, will cover most incidental damage on the vehicle up to a set amount so you don’t have to pay higher amounts when you return the vehicle.

• If you don’t drive 24,000 km a year but still need a vehicle for your lifestyle. You’re able to get into the newest model year vehicle by simply returning your current lease at the end of its term and get into a new offering. There’s no option that’s better than the other; it completely depends on your lifestyle and needs. And those needs may change, so while a lease will work for you today, financing may make more sense a few years from now. Always ask your automotive sales person for a thorough breakdown of the figures associated in your decision. There are no bad questions and an honest sales person will always be transparent with you to earn your trust and business.

Winter Driving:

Tips for safely enjoying the season by carl nadeau

With winter fast approaching, a recent survey by Michelin Canada showed that Ontarians could be taking better precautions to prepare for winter driving. The first step to conquering those harsh winter roads is equipping your vehicle with four winter tires. The study revealed that only 66 per cent of Ontario drivers switch to winter tires when the season rolls around, even with incentives like lower insurance premiums being offered since 2016. Winter tires, like the Michelin® X-Ice® Snow, should be installed once the temperature approaches freezing. While your brakes stop the wheels from turning, it is the grip of the tires that brings your car to a stop. In addition to winter tire installation, driving smoothly, staying alert and looking ahead will help Ontarians handle the winter season with ease. As a former professional racecar driver and Michelin Driving Expert, here are my top tips for staying safe on the road this winter. 

36 MODERN MISSISSAUGA | HOLIDAY 2020

• Check your tires: You should check the tire pressure of all your tires (including the spare) every month! You should also examine your tires’ tread condition. If the tread seems worn down, have your tires checked by a professional. • Plan your routes in advance and check road conditions: Checking reports on road conditions will help you make driving decisions and avoid dangerous situations. • Emergency phone numbers: Identify the person/people to call in case of emergency by putting these three letters – ICE – before their name(s) in your cellphone contacts. • Check your fluids: Make sure you always have at least half a tank of gas before heading on the road, and plan stops for gas ahead of long drives. Also, carry extra windshield washer fluid to ensure proper visibility. With the first snowstorm not too far away, the time to prepare is now. Being prepared for winter driving will help you (safely) make the most of the upcoming season.

Best wishes for the Holidays!

Health, peace and joy to you and your loved ones this holiday season! Thank you for the privilege of your business. You are the reason why we do what we do. WHAT I’VE LEARNED IN OWNING MODERN MISSISSAUGA MEDIA FOR

38 MODERN MISSISSAUGA | HOLIDAY 2020

>

5 YEARS >> by jay kana

I’m humbled, fortunate and very proud that Modern Mississauga Media turns five on December 1st, 2020. I’ve met remarkably inspiring people, experienced many memorable events, travelled, learned about myself, learned from others far smarter than myself, made new friends, challenged myself, earned wonderful wins and experienced valuable teaching moments, and I’ve been incredibly fortunate to have been strongly supported by family and friends, colleagues, advertisers, readers, writers, our community, and strangers. I’ve had bad days, down days, lost days, frustrating days, days where I was a click away from shutting the company down. And I wouldn’t change any single step on my journey. Thank you to absolutely everyone for the first 5 years; I’m just getting started.

Know. Your. Worth.

I felt bad when I was hammered down on price because “losing” a deal wasn’t ideal. What’s worse is reducing your worth, having the word spread that “Jay always drops the price with enough asking” and then never being able to recover your lost worth.

Be acutely aware of finances.

This is the key driver in any successful business. Having a mother who’s been a CRA accountant for decades who instilled the importance of understanding and managing finances helped. It’s not about being “rich.” It’s about being money smart to enable future opportunities and growth.

Support your community. Our community has supported me through my ongoing journey and it’s imperative that I give back whenever and however I can. Remember where you came from and those who helped you.

Ask for help.

Nobody can do everything on their own. Instead of struggling and stumbling through something, ask for help and or guidance. It’s not a weakness; it’s strength to realize you don’t know everything.

Wait, don’t chase.

The harder I’ve chased, the further the goal. I’ve learned to be patient in all aspects of my life instead of running full tilt. It’s a matter of strategy and knowing when to give someone space. Also, it’s a free dating tip!

You’ll be burned.

And that’s ok. I understand things can change quickly and unexpectedly; I don’t take it personally as I cannot control anyone’s behaviour or actions. It still happens and will continue to happen. It’s the reaction and recourse that matter.

m oder nFE AT U RE

Create opportunities.

If we always did what we’ve always done, we’ll always get what we’ve always got. Whether small, medium or large scale, be an active thinker on how you can improve what you do. Journaling/white boarding works quite well for me.

There’s a lesson in everything.

Whether it’s new or reaffirmed, being aware of the lesson in every interaction and moment today strengthens you tomorrow. Your greatest wins and your strongest learning moments are accompanied with lessons.

Apologize swiftly, sincerely and succinctly.

Yup, I’ve screwed up, sometimes severely. When I do, I’ve never side-stepped responsibility for it. Own it. Understand it. Learn from it. And for goodness sake when you apologize for it, do it the right way, or don’t do it at all.

Not everything you attempt will be successful at first.

I’ve had some self-proclaimed brilliant ideas that have been as well received as a screen door on a submarine. Some have been saved by tweaking them and others have been shelved. The key point is knowing that every path will lead to your destination. Sometimes it’s a different road; other times it’s a different vehicle.

Others will try and break you.

And that’s also ok – you cannot control anyone’s actions/ reactions. Whether it’s their insecurity, their jealousy or something else, attempt to have an open conversation with them to find out what the real issue is. My key takeaway is to realize the reasoning before rushing to react.

Give back whenever possible.

If you can, regardless of size or amount, give back, I encourage you to do so. We’re all in different places with our time and finances but if you can give something… anything, reinvesting in your world/community is the right thing to do.

It’s not personal.

It took me a year to figure this out and I’m happier because of it. Whether it’s a client backing out of a deal at the 11th hour and 59th minute to ignoring my emails/calls and yet commenting on my social media posts, I believe it’s not personal; it’s business. Understanding the difference and not losing sleep over it has been one of the strongest lessons.

The days are long and the years are short.

I used to joke that I felt like my days were 30 hours long and my weeks had 12 days as that’s how it truly felt, and still sometimes does. The fact that I’m writing this five-year summary has a surreal feeling as it truly doesn’t feel that so much time has elapsed.

Be grateful.

Every. Damn. Day. I. Am. Grateful. For. What. I. Have. I’m very fortunate to be where I am and my approach is that anything can change in an instant. Being grateful is hard wired in for me and I take absolutely nothing for granted in all aspects of my life.

40 MODERN MISSISSAUGA | HOLIDAY 2020

Pay well, pay promptly.

You get what you pay for. That’s it. Full stop. Don’t make your partners/vendors wait to get paid. Fluid cash flow can make or break any business.

Keep learning.

Nobody knows it all, experts included. Broadening my knowledge base daily has helped my journey. From keyboard shortcuts to web design to the financial side and everything in between, there’s something to be learned daily. Invest in your business and yourself.

Adapt and innovate.

Print is dead. That was a tough realization as Modern Mississauga was founded on print. Switching gears to an interactive digital magazine wasn’t easy but necessary. Adapting to the changing world is paramount. Don’t believe me? Ask Blockbuster, Blackberry, Kodak, MySpace, and Toys "R" Us.

Doing > Thinking.

You simply cannot will something into existence. All the “power of positive thinking” does nothing unless you move forward and execute. I’ve over-thought ideas to the point where I’ve nearly talked myself out of it. Create, research, plan and most importantly, do.

Communicate clearly.

I, ummm, well, kinda sorta wanted to, maybe, if, uhhh, the thing is, what I might mean… hmmm, let’s see..well. Be clear and concise to eliminate confusion and misinterpretation.

You’re not for everyone.

I wish I realized this from a professional aspect earlier. Being the try-hard people pleaser as an entrepreneur may sound good but it’s damaging, unsustainable and exhausting long-term. Simply put, you can’t be everything to everyone.

Right over rushed.

Being first isn’t always best. The early days of Modern Mississauga saw me rush everything with an unsustainable sense of time. Once I slowed down, I understood that it’s better to be second and specific than first and flustered.

Take care of your team.

I am nothing without my team, so I do my best to ensure they get everything they want and need to be successful. Shout out to Elizabeth Wise who’s been with me through it all and has created a simply stunning magazine, year after year.

Be resourceful.

Have I used a discarded piece of post-Halloween pumpkin to prop up a camera? Yep. Have I duct taped a camera to a car because the suction mount broke? Yep. Professionally, “no” means “find a different way.” Even if it’s way out there.

Steer clear of vanity metrics.

I know, I know, I know… it’s so tempting to want a social media account with enormous follower counts. Me? I’m prefer slow, steady growth with the right community than inflated, purchased followers. Definitely be aspirational but also be realistic and smart about it.

Embrace competition.

I no longer feel threatened by my competition. It’s now part of the mix to up my game. Oh, and never, ever, under any circumstances, speak ill of your competitors to anyone. Ever. Never. It’s unbecoming and unprofessional. MODERN MISSISSAUGA | HOLIDAY 2020

Fitting Gift Ideas For

the Strangest o

If someone had told me last year that I’d be recommending ‘mask facials’ and escape room adventures that you play at home as gifts, I might have questioned their sanity. But 2020 has thrown us for a loop, and these strange times call for some more creative gift ideas. Here are our suggestions: ESCAPE MAIL

As soon as we opened the envelope, our family was hooked on this escape room/mystery puzzle. One minute we were holding our heads in our hands, perplexed and bewildered, and the next our arms were raised above our heads in the universal sign of victory. At the end, there were high-fives all around, as we solved the mystery. The Calgary-based company started Mobile Escape when their escape room business that catered to schools vanished due to COVID-19. Determined not to give up their dream, they created these fun and clever mysteries available to anyone reachable by snail mail.

STRESS-REDUCING LOTIONS & POTIONS

A wise gift, frankincense is believed to have sedative and comforting properties that support the body’s immune and respiratory systems. This time-honoured fragrance is an ingredient in several of Neal’s Yard Remedies best-selling products. This English company specializes in natural products that bring apothecary expertise ethically to customers. Two products especially fitting for 2020 are: Unwind Foaming Bath Collection with blends of essential oil that will encourage your loved one to indulge in a relaxing soak more often, and Night Time Aromatherapy Duo which promotes tranquility. (Hint: put a drop in your mask for a calming effect.) The duo comes beautifully packaged with a ribbon, perfect for hanging on the tree.

CHOCOLATE POSTCARDS

Speaking of snail mail, remember when we used to get letters and postcards? So imagine the delight in receiving a chocolate postcard in the mail. Alicja Confections, based in Ottawa, created a handmade chocolate bar you can send in letter mail, using one $1.94 stamp in Canada. The funky design of the package, on which you can add a personal message, as well as the unique varieties of the 26 flavours are sure to please most people on your list. Try Party in My Mouth (white chocolate with popping candy and sprinkles) or the Nicholas (milk chocolate with potato chips) for the young and adventurous or Ember Island (chili dark chocolate) or Espresso (coffee dark chocolate) for the more discerning chocolate lover.

‘MASKERADE’ FACIALS

Ritz-Carlton, Toronto has just introduced a new facial called Maskerade, focussing on the areas of the face exposed when wearing a mask, which remains on during the treatment. Indulge in 60 minutes of exfoliation, moisturizing, anti-aging therapy and massage for your eye area and forehead along with a blissful scalp and shoulder massage. Beauty Sleep is another wellness treatment that would be much appreciated under the tree in 2020, as it was especially designed to reduce stress, promote relaxation and help you to sleep better and longer. Ritz-Carlton gift certificates, which can be used for all services in the hotel, never expire.

ONE-OF-A KIND GOODIES

Since 1975, the One Of A Kind Show has been a holiday event to look forward to with its hand-crafted gifts that range from tasty treats and stocking stuffers to major artwork, furniture and clothing. This year, they’re online from October 22 to December 22, with 700 + Canadian makers, so it’s easy to support small businesses and find original gifts. When we searched face masks, we found 416 products from beautifully designed Japanese fabric masks to more humorous face coverings that depict characters from popular sit-coms like “Golden Girls” and “The Office”. Bet you never imagined this in 2019.

Buying in a Sellers’ Market by mark payne

| photo by cytonn photography on unsplash

2020 has been a challenging year. From job loss to family loss, we've all been touched by the wrath of Covid-19. Simple tasks like grocery shopping and visiting friends have been turned into challenges and the closures of many businesses and mounting job losses is heartbreaking. Amidst such turmoil, one might imagine a shift towards a buyers’ market from the long-standing sellers’ market. With health concerns and the general uncertainty of life, adding substantially to one’s debt load via the purchase of a home or cottage would be the last thing on people's mind. However, such is not the case. With a second lockdown in December 2020, buyers are seeking refuge in their homes. Contractors are busy building fences, pools, decks, updating kitchens, making home office space, etc. Not only are they having trouble matching demand, they cannot easily buy the supplies they need for their projects. The desire for more and smarter space is at an all-time high. Affordable lending rates have aided the surge in sale volumes and prices. Hence the sellers’ market lives on! But you're trying to buy in this market. You’ve toured more houses online than you care to think about. Your realtor has written numerous offers to purchase on your behalf. What’s missing? ... the SOLD sign on a property that YOU just bought! The key is getting set for success, not disappointment. Here are three key items to consider when you find yourself in a “bidding war” in this highly competitive housing market.

62 MODERN MISSISSAUGA | HOLIDAY 2020

BE REPRESENTED

As with most things in life, it pays to talk to the professionals! You're not a dentist; that’s why you hire one. You're not a lawyer; that’s why you hire one. And you’re not a realtor; that’s why you hire one. What is likely the biggest purchase of your life should not be taken lightly. Realtors know markets and have access to crucial information. Sign a Buyer Representation Agreement and make sure your best interests are at the forefront of your deal. Remember that the seller is paying for your realtor of choice to represent you. Take advantage of that and get well represented.

BE EDUCATED

Once you’ve narrowed the search for what your ideal property looks like, find out from your realtor what similar properties in the neighbourhoods are actually selling for. For example, your budget is $1,000,000. You’re doing some research on realtor.ca and come across listings for $950,000 and $975,000. However, recent sales of comparable properties have been $1,100,000 to $1,200,000. Knowing this in advance is going to save you, and your representative, a lot of valuable time. Know the market you are trying to buy into; it's critical. This saves undue stress and heartache of getting your hopes up for what is destine to be disappointment as you get out bid.

BE PREPARED

As with any deal in any market, the cleaner the deal is the better. This is especially true in the sellers’ market. Put yourself in the seller’s shoes; the fewer “escape” clauses you have in your offer, the stronger your offer is. Take advantage of existing surveys and home inspection reports from credible sources. Get a mortgage pre-approval. Confirm financing is in place when you find the perfect property. Having the pre-approval in advance of property hunting will ensure most of the heavy lifting is done when it comes to this financing clause. This minimizes the time period needed to secure financing and thus, a stronger offer. To make your deal stand out, be prepared with your deposit cheque. Submitting your deposit cheque with your offer shows an added layer of security to the seller that the deal won't fall apart on account of a delayed delivery of the deposit cheque. if you've got real estate questions, I invite you to connect with me via email at mpmovesrealty@gmail.com This article is not intended to solicit clients currently under contract with an existing Buyer Representation Agreement and/or Listing Agreement. The opinions and concepts expressed are deemed by the author to be valuable in pursuing property to purchase and by no means is this list exhaustive in nature.

The amount of items being brought to us is everincreasing and to help ward off those pesky porch pirates, a video doorbell is a smart investment. Easily connected to your smartphone, you’ll see exactly who and what is at your front door, both wanted and unwanted.

Staying on the camera train, having a dash cam adds an extra layer of security and peace of mind in the unfortunate event of a collision. With distracted driving rates accelerating, a small investment today puts the brakes on the risk of you being charged with something you allegedly did or didn’t do on the road.

We live at home. Many of us work and learn from home. One of the last things we want to do is vacuum… at least that’s my case. Picking up a robot vacuum can do that chore for you while you’re working, eating, sleeping or out of the house. Many can be programmed and scheduled from your smart phone.

CELEBRATE THE HOLIDAYS

THROUGH A SLIGHTLY DIFFERENT LENS

68 MODERN MISSISSAUGA | HOLIDAY 2020

This year the holidays might look a little different so along with all the other changes to our traditions, company and celebrations – we might also need to change our perspective. Approach the holiday season through a slightly different lens and experience things differently this year.

We’re still a community and technology enables us to still be together, while safely apart. We’ll still see each other’s faces, smiles and holiday joy. We'll share moments of happiness, create new memories and embrace in old and new traditions. #CelebrationSquare

#Streetsville

Mississauga’s holiday spirit was celebrated virtually this year, through the online lighting of its annual Christmas tree at Celebration Square. Viewers of the virtual ceremony were invited to join the festivities from the comfort of their homes, favourite couches, cozy recliners or reindeer-drawn sleighs as Mayor Crombie and Members of Council lit up the Square for the first time this winter. The festive tree, powered by Alectra, is a sight to see and stands 35ft. tall and features 18,000 dazzling lights. Starting now, and into the New Year, MCS has been transformed into the Great Bright North with vibrant sights and festive lighting throughout the Square. Guests planning to walk-through the Square must keep within their household groups and maintain a safe physical distance of two metres at all times.

The quaint “Village In The City” is brimming with charm during the Holidays. Several storefronts have been tastefully decorated, street lamps have been adorned with warm Christmas lights and in the heart of the village, is the massive and beautiful Christmas tree. Leading up to the tree on Main St in the Village Square, you’ll find the trees lined with lights that are best appreciated once the sun descends. Duck down side streets to enjoy the lesser seen but equally wonderful décor. Stroll the Queen St. strip with a locally brewed hot beverage, and jot down the names of local stores where you can shop online for one-of-a-kind gifts, all while you safely social distance and enjoy the walkability of Streetsville.

#Chimes

Bonus Pro Tip: After you’ve taken all your photos, place your order with Butter Chicken Roti to-go!

If you visit the Square, be sure to check out the “Chimes” installation on the lawn. Every movement of the central wind chime triggers a unique light and sound reaction throughout the 7,000 sq. ft. piece of art. Chimes is a creation of Collectif Blackbox and a coproduction of the Quartier des Spectacles Partnership and Spectra (Illuminart). It was created for the Fête des Lumières of Lyon in 2017 and is being displayed for the first time in the GTA at Celebration Square.

#PhotoOpps In addition to the tree and the chimes, start trending on social with these equally great selfie-spots located across #celebrationsquare. 1. Northern Lightbox presented by TD A three-sided infinity room-style lightbox will immerse you in the wonder of the Northern Lights. 2. Freeze Frame presented by Bell The perfect backdrop for winter portraits. Pro Tip: Stand on the steps leading up to the outdoor ice rink for a chic shot of the tree with the City Centre condos in the background. Bonus Pro Tip: Take a picture standing in front of the wind chimes, so you’ll get the Christmas tree and City Hall in the background.

70 MODERN MISSISSAUGA | HOLIDAY 2020

Pro Tip: The best spot for a Christmas Tree picture is standing beside the north entrance to Butter Chicken Roti.

#Malton The “much closer than it actually seems” community of Malton not only puts on a stellar Canada Day celebration, they also do the holidays right. The only neighbourhood in Mississauga to have its name in huge, 14 foot high illuminated letters, park your car at Paul Coffey Park and take the short, two-minute westward walk to reach the letters, CF-100 display and of course, the six massive and lit up Christmas trees. With the “O” in Malton being heart shaped, it’s a superb selfie spot. As you head back to the park, enjoy the seasonal lights and inflatables that add to the festive ambiance of in Malton. The Castle Playground will also be decorated for the holidays, making it a great daytime spot for families. Shooting Stars along Goreway Drive will point your way to the shopping district there. Driving on Airport Road between Derry Road and Thamesgate Drive you’ll also see the new public art bike installations along the median, which are also picture-worthy. A great reason to stop and get some local take-out at one of the many restaurants along the way! Add in the multitude of businesses that have gotten into the Holiday spirit and you’ll develop a new found appreciation for Canada’s home of aviation. Pro Tip: Stand about 50 feet away from the illuminated “M” in Malton and shoot diagonally to capture the letters, tree and CF-100 in one shot.

#PortCredit There’s simply something special about winter by the water that’s unlike anything else. Local businesses on Lakeshore and surrounding side streets having their storefronts decked in Holiday style, the festive feeling on the streets and of course, the lighthouse. With free parking in December, it’s even easier to saunter the strip and fill your camera with holiday pictures. Remember to head south and enjoy the lakefront parks, which allow a beautiful view of the water. Yes, it’s not traditional “holiday” themed but were’ one of the few cities in Canada that have a waterfront, so may as well enjoy it year round. Make sure you stop by the lighthouse and stand on the landing, aptly named the Queen Bea Lookout, for beautiful views of Port Credit . Pro Tip: Stand at either Lakeshore and Hurontario facing west, or at the lighthouse facing east for great shots of the length of lakeshore with the local shops bookending the streetscape.

#Clarkson For a village that’s over 200 years old, Clarkson sure does look lovely, especially over the Holidays. Even without the fanfare of the annual Christmas tree lighting at the Clarkson Community Church, it’ll still be lit up and a fun spot to safely (from a distance, of course) take pictures this year. There’s free metered parking until January 15th (please try and keep it to an hour so others can utilize this program) so you can check out how Clarkson’s local businesses and restaurants have embraced the Holiday spirit during this out of the ordinary year. There’s also some extraordinary views via the parks,

namely Jack Darling, where you might not get Christmas-esque pictures but you will get some truly stunning winter shots. Pro Tip: Jack Darling Park has some of the best nature views in the city, hands down – but it is a popular spot, so please remember to keep your distance (or wear your mask to keep safe and warm). Bonus Pro Tip: The drive on Orr Road during or just after a snowfall is beyond magnificent

No matter where you go, think #MississaugaMade Of all the things to see and do across our beautiful city the most important things to remember are to stay safe, stay positive and support our local communities, businesses and local shops. We all need to do our part, and every little bit counts. In an effort to encourage people to shop local, Tourism Mississauga has launched a contest called “Shop Local for the WIN with #MississaugaMade!” On now until December 30th, if you buy, shop or order from a local Mississauga business, you could WIN a $100 VISA gift card. All you need to do is support local, keep your receipt and enter online. Mississaugamade.ca/LocalForTheWin We’ve got a wonderful city filled with great local gems, and even though Mississauga isn’t what we’re used to this time of year, we can still safely enjoy it, explore it, and keep it alive.

No matter how you celebrate the holidays, one thing's for sure -- this year is going to look very different. In our new feature, Home for the Holidays, we talk to people around the world about their plans for a socially-distanced festive season. First up, folksy Swedish politician Dag Fjord. 72 MODERN MISSISSAUGA | HOLIDAY 2020

MODERN MISSISSAUGA: Mr. Fjord, many people feel that these holidays are going to be harder than they had to be. How would you respond to a critic who calls your coronavirus response misguided at best, criminally negligent at worst? DAG FJORD: In my opinion, I have done a tremendous job of managing the pandemic. "E for effort," as you say in English. Very early in the crisis, I decided to do what no one else was willing to do: nothing. And by every conceivable metric, it has turned out beautifully! MM: Which metrics are those, exactly? Dead elderly people? DF: Ja! You know, like in Midsommar? MM: Midsommar?

days

DF: Ja, an excellent documentary about traditional Swedish life. You should watch it with your children on the Yuletide!

it will go away. Take this delightful Swedish Fish, for example. I have ignored this yummy treat for the entire interview. And now it is gone!

MM: Speaking of Yuletide, how will you be celebrating this year?

MM: Hey! That was mine!

DF: It will be difficult for many Swedes, because they cannot be with their family and friends. But if they are lucky, perhaps Jultomten will visit them in a crowded bar, school or IKEA instead! As for me, I will be filming a fun video about the Fjord family turkey recipe. The secret is meatballs.

DF: Nej! It was not.

MM: I see. So are you hoping that Sweden will achieve herd immunity in time for the holidays? DF: Herd immunity has been the goal from the very start! It is based on an incontrovertible scientific principle: if you ignore something,

MM: Forget about it. Last question. With all of the exciting progress being made on a coronavirus vaccine, do you think Yuletide 2021 will see a return to normalcy? DF: Perhaps, my friend, so long as we do not forget the most important lesson of all: to never surrender to the demands of doctors and public health professionals when the economy is on the line. For me, that is the true miracle of Yuletide.

MALTON MINUTES by natalie hart |

photo by mufid majnun on unsplash

Malton is a beautifully diverse and culturally rich community within Mississauga. Unfortunately, the Malton community has been heavily hit by COVID-19. According to Public Health Data, the positivity rate for the week of November 8th – 14th was very high at 18.6%. In response to the high positivity rate and the lack of COVID testing sites in Malton, WellFort Community Health Services made it a priority to open a testing site that residents could easily access, a testing site close to home. On October 29th, WellFort in partnership with Punjabi Community Health Services launched their first COVID-19 community testing clinic at the Four Corners Health Centre in Westwood Mall. The clinic offers holistic care to those most vulnerable to experiencing health inequities, including Black, South Asian, non-insured, street involved and lowincome individuals. In the few weeks the clinic has been open it has demonstrated its leadership in providing care that is centered in community needs and reflects the complex relationship between race, income, and access to health services. Clients who visit the testing clinic are predominantly Black, South Asian, and Caucasian individuals from the L4T and L6T neighbourhoods. Language supports and resources are provided to clients who participate in the clinic. The clinic administers close to one hundred tests every day of operation, with results returned to clients within 2-4 days. The positivity rate and demand for the clinic have both been high; 11-12% of clients test positive for COVID-19. The testing clinic is now open two days/week and is projected to expand should demand increase. The clinic has also shed light on how our community is struggling with the economic impacts of COVID-19. Many people have lost their jobs, an implication that has trickling

74 MODERN MISSISSAUGA | HOLIDAY 2020

effects into food and housing security. It is essential that clients are provided with adequate recovery support that goes beyond managing symptoms. When a client tests positive, staff will help them assess their ability to isolate, obtain food, and pay bills—and those facing barriers are referred to Support & Care Navigators for more intensive supports. Clients facing challenges coping with their diagnosis or managing symptoms can connect with a counsellor for support. Clients without health cards or insurance that need further care are offered access to services for free. “The increasing demand for testing, the high positivity rate and the assessments in the test clinic, reaffirm the need for a local response and equity focussed approach to COVID” says Laura Guerrero, WellFort CEO. “We must continue to bring testing to communities along with education and health promotion and provide support for the individuals and families impacted by this virus. As we head into the holiday season, it’s important to get tested. Knowing your results is important to ensure you protect your family and the people you may encounter during the holidays. Let’s do our part to reduce the spread of the virus in our communities by getting tested.

To pre-book an appointment at the clinic for a COVID-19 test, call (416) 312-0566 Monday to Friday, 8am-4pm. The testing clinic is open Tuesdays & Thursdays, 12-4pm. All persons, including those without health cards or insurance, are welcome.

be a STUDENT have a TEACHER The ability to leapfrog others in progress is rooted in your willingness to gather and assimilate information from those who have gone before you. An insatiable thirst for understanding and learning is the key to sustainable progress in all areas of life, your health and fitness being no exception. With a competent teacher every new opportunity, failure and success along the way is an opportunity for reflection, evaluation and adjustment going forward. Professional athletes have coaches and trainers. Entrepreneurs and CEO’s have mentors. Yet many people believe that fitness is something they need to figure out on their own. They’ll often waste time and money following fads and gimmicks, always believing their success lies on the other side of the next Celery Juice Detox or 21-Day Reset. All this while the key to success was there the whole time: you need to find someone who knows more than you to guide and teach you! It’s true that teachers often come in many different forms. Depending on where you are in your journey, it could be a peer that is on a similar path but slightly ahead of you. In the fitness world this often takes the form of a workout partner. Sometimes a more formal relationship, such as a hired trainer or coach helps by adding accountability and direction to the mix. And yes there is still a place for books, articles or one size for all workout plans as long as they’re teaching you something.

are doing it. This understanding is not accidental, it’s actually quintessential to their success. Can you imagine a successful executive who didn’t have a thorough understanding of the industry they are in? Neither can I. Seek to understand and learn and not only will you be able to make better choices in the short term but you’ll also develop an understanding that will help you make better progress in the long term. Stick with it long enough and to your pleasant surprise you might even surpass your teacher.

It matters less how you’re learning, and more that you are in fact learning. Those that succeed at the highest levels always have an uncanny understanding of what it is that they are doing and why they

Helping Small Business

GO DIGITAL In a technological age that demands efficiency, creativity, accessibility and a strong customer-centred approach, the City of Mississauga is re-launching, for the second year, the Digital Service Squad (DSS) Program to support local main street businesses and support businesses impacted by COVID-19. The City’s DSS helps businesses become more tech-savvy in promoting and growing their business. The DSS consists of digital technology specialists who work with local Business Improvement Area Associations (BIAs) to support main street storefront small business owners to enhance their digital presence. This includes helping them adopt digital tools and technologies to attract new clients, improve the way their goods and services are being marketed and sold, and compete globally. The Digital Service Squad was made possible through a $67,500 grant awarded to the City by FedDev Ontario and the Province

of Ontario, in partnership with the Toronto Association of Business Improvement Areas (TABIA) and the Ontario Business Improvement Area Association (OBIAA). Mississauga’s Digital Service Squad is hitting the streets ready to help main street small businesses bridge the technical gaps needed to promote to a larger audience and gain a competitive advantage. The Squad will further the City of Mississauga’s commitment to support inclusive growth and provide guidance to help businesses endure the impacts of COVID-19 and beyond. The Digital Service Squad is part of the City of Mississauga’s Business Enterprise Centre that provides guidance and support to help entrepreneurs and small business owners start and grow their small business. Closing the Gap Between

B USINESS & CRE ATIVIT Y:

Mississauga Joins Digital Main Street’s ShopHERE program powered by Google Artists included. This welcoming message convinced hip hop artist Vivek Mehmi to apply for Digital Main Street’s ShopHERE program powered by Google supported by the Mississauga Business Enterprise Centre (MBEC). “I probably wouldn’t have applied if they hadn’t said the program was open to artists,” Mehmi explains. “A lot of artists don’t see themselves as business people, but during COIVID, everyone is going through a hard time and people are turning to art and to artists to enrich their lives. It’s important to learn to see your art as a means of support, as a business, because it’s part of seeing yourself as relevant to the cultural fabric.” It was not a revelation that came easily. Mehmi’s entire strategy for connecting his music with his fans and growing his audience had to change. “Prior to COVID, I was gearing up for an events-based business this year. I had planned live appearances at festivals and

scheduled other performances,” Mehmi remembers. “When everything had to change, my idea of just how to do it was fragmented. Before ShopHERE, I wasn’t sure how to generate any income at all.” Digital Main Street's ShopHERE Program powered by Google provides independent small businesses and artists with a quick, easy and no-cost way to get selling online. Access free one-to-one support from ecommerce experts to help you sell your work or services online. Funded by the Federal Government of Canada through the Federal Economic Development Agency for Southern Ontario, Province of Ontario and key corporate partners. Through his involvement in the ShopHERE program, Mehmi received hands-on help to build and launch a Shopify store to monetize his web site at https://www.vivekmehmi.com/. Mehmi’s line of t-shirts, tank tops and buttons that reflect his brand are now available through the e-commerce platform.

Since getting the shop up and running, Mehmi continues to work with an MBEC consultant to flesh out his business plan, expand the shop, and develop marketing and outreach strategies. The process has introduced the musician to essential business concepts and skills. “In September alone I started learning about analytics, had my first experience with drop shipping and started selling worldwide,” Mehmi says. “The sessions I’ve been doing with MBEC have taught me that we all need help, no one is an expert in everything. I feel like I have both sides now, the art side and the business side. MBEC really helped to close the gap for me.” To learn more about the ShopHERE program, visit: digitalmainstreet.ca/perspective To learn more about Mississauga Business Enterprise Centre programs and resources, visit: thefutureisunlimited.ca/small-business

4 key components of a successful

renovation by danielle campbell | photo by charles deluvio KNOW YOUR BUDGET

When considering a construction project for your home or business, it is important to know how much you are comfortably willing to spend. Sharing this budget with your design team up front can assist with keeping your scope and budget in line. I always recommend keeping 10% of your project budget held for a contingency fund during construction.

CREATE A WISH LIST

Before engaging a licensed design professional, establish the goal for this project. Create a list of ‘needs’ and ‘nice to haves’. The ‘needs’ satisfy basic functional requirements and the ‘nice to haves’ are items that can be incorporated should the project budget allow or be phased in later.

HIRE THE DESIGN TEAM FIRST, CONTRACTOR SECOND

Often clients are anxious to understand costing for their project. The first call is a contractor to request an estimate. Typically, these are done via walk through and verbal description. This approach is problematic for several reasons. • The contractor’s interpretation of scope and level of detail may not align with your expectations based on a verbal description. • A cost will be provided for the project that is inaccurate but will be used in important budgetary decisions moving forward. • A licensed professional has not done a feasibility study to determine building code or city requirements that may affect budget. An accurate project cost cannot be provided without drawings that include construction details, material selections

84 MODERN MISSISSAUGA | HOLIDAY 2020

and specialty design elements. Selecting a Licensed Interior Designer and/ or Architect should be your first step in facilitating any large renovation. A well-prepared design package will deliver complete project cost prior to beginning construction and reduces extras at the tail end of the project.

LET PROFESSIONALS PROJECT MANAGE YOUR CONSTRUCTION

Licensed Interior Designers, Architects and Project Management companies make a full-time job of construction management. It is time consuming. Far too often, we witness clients try to value engineer their project at the expense of losing valuable professional assistance during the construction phase. We bring experience and education to the table. With this, we manage contractor progress, quality control, evaluate construction extras, contractor questions, coordinate product orders along with perform routine site reviews to ensure the design is proceeding as planned. A licensed professional helps you get from concept to completion with minimal stress in between. Danielle owns Danielle Campbell Design Inc., a multi-disciplinary design studio offering a full range of services to both commercial and residential clients. She holds an advanced diploma in Interior Design from Sheridan College and professional accreditation from the National Council for Interior Design Qualification (NCIDQ) and the Association of Registered Interior Designers of Ontario (ARIDO). Compositions of Streetsville:

P U B L I C A R T I N I T I AT I V E Our goal is to foster a sense of place where all feel welcomed in our Village. by amber pajtasz The Streetsville BIA’s mission is to maintain and promote a vibrant business community within the historic Village of Streetsville through advocacy, events, marketing, and beautification. Our goal is to foster a sense of place where all feel welcomed in our Village. In 2018, the Streetsville BIA was the recipient of a Main Street Revitalization grant funded by the Province of Ontario. With this grant, we were able to purchase 100 additional planters, pave 30 pads to support the foundation of these new locations, repair

86 MODERN MISSISSAUGA | HOLIDAY 2020

existing planter, provide complimentary hanging baskets to our members in 2020, purchase new summer banners and our final project installed this week, our Mural Banner Project located at 142- 148 Queen St. S. This Mural Banner Project would have not been possible without the additional sponsorship from the Streetsville Legion Branch 139, The Streetsville Bread and Honey Founders Festival, and the Vic Johnston Community Centre. The support of our community partners, De Zen Realty Co. LDT, allowed the

Streetsville BIA to turn this vacant land that once housed a Credit Dale Poultry Farm and a gas station owned by Imperial Oil Limited in to an artistic composition of our Village. For this project, we commissioned Migomedia, a freelance graphic firm owned and operated in Mississauga by Creative Director and Graphic Designer Jeff Jones. As well as Visual Artist Chloe Nava. Chloe is a Canadian (and former Singaporean) artist specializing in acrylic painting and mixed media illustration. Her art education began at nine years old

and was honed at the Jenny Li Art School for over a decade. Her dual-cultural heritage has influenced her unique and colourful perspective of the human experience, ranging from food, beauty, animals and nature. Her style borders on hyper-realistic and surreal interpretations of her subject matter. She draws inspiration from different still-life aesthetics and then curates her images, sometimes through her own photography, to reveal a story in their presentation. “What I hoped to bring to these 9 mixed-media banners (paintings and digital art) was the specific history of the neighbourhood, as seen through my perspective as an artist. The result has been a colourful and celebratory display

of all of Streetsville’s facets from its events, nature elements, city planning, and history. This project was a large undertaking and working to create a collection that reflected my style as an artist as well as Streetsville was a challenge and one that has expanded my range as an artist. I'm grateful to the Streetsville BIA for providing me with the opportunity to 'paint' the "Village in the City" and leave my thumbprint on these banners”, explains Chloe. The goal of this mural is to connect the community to our beloved “Village in the City” and showcase the story of Streetsville through public art. Public art adds tremendous value to communities’ cultural and economic existence, creating a sense of place and community pride.

creating a

a e s y a holid

With nearly 100,000 small businesses in our city, Mississauga residents are encouraged now more than ever during the Holiday season, to Join the Movement and stand together in support of locally-based businesses, services and talents within our community. Here are some easy and effective ways to come together as a #MississaugaMade community and give our support to the small business community.

Order from a Local Restaurant One of the hardest hit industries, nearly

all restaurants depend on in-person dining to keep them in business. With the holidays this year now in lockdown, that crucial aspect has been eliminated. Instead of using a third party delivery service, order directly from the restaurant

88 MODERN MISSISSAUGA | HOLIDAY 2020

and drive/walk to pick up your meal. This way, all the revenue goes directly to the business. And with rates as high as 30% going to the delivery services on razor thin food margins to begin with, this is a small way to make a difference. If you still want delivery, consider ordering through an app like Ritual – which is commission free for local #MississaugaMade restaurants.

Shop Local Online Before you click “Place Order” on your

next online purchase, check to see if any local retailers near you sell similar products online. You’ll be pleasantly surprised by the unique and one-of-a-kind options out there – many still offering seasonal sales and promotional prices. Get your order delivered to your doorstep, or place your order for curbside pick-up. Not only will the local shop owners be thankful for your support, but your loved ones will love the local thoughtfulness. Find local businesses in your neighbourhood at MississaugaMade.ca

Shop at Local Essential Businesses It might not be your regular go-to, but

consider shopping at a local independent grocer, butcher, or bakery, for some of your holiday favourites this year. Not only will you probably find a wider selection of smaller

name brands and homemade fixin’s made in-store, but often these local grocers stock locally grown produce and locally produced products – meaning it’s a win-win-win for supporting local all around.

Buy Local Gift Cards This gives businesses the much needed cash

they need now so they are better equipped for tomorrow. As long as there’s fluidity in cash flow, which is kept in motion by gift cards, our crucial small businesses are better armed to navigate the turbulent waters.

Support your local BIA Whether you “Shop the ‘Ville” or “Support the Port”, there are

Here are a few of the many benefits of such a simple action:

Spread the Word Have a favourite local business that you love and support regularly?

1. It gives the businesses added awareness online 2. It shows your audience that the business engages in safe and responsible social distancing 3. Someone in your digital network may be looking for exactly what you’ve purchased 4. It can introduce the business to those who may not have heard of them before 5. It can be shared and reach a much broader audience in a matter of seconds

several local programs across the city where you can find a directory of local businesses, or purchase gift cards redeemable at a variety of local stores. From Clarkson to Cooksville, Malton to Steetsville and Port Credit Mississauga’s local BIA’s are at the heart of our local neighbourhoods and villages, and stand in solidarity with our local businesses.

Don’t be a Grinch, tell people about it! A recommendation from a friend or family member is far more persuasive than any form of advertising. It will help generate new business, and officially moves you to “Influencer” status among your peers!

Put “LOCAL” on your Wishlist Before sending Santa your list this year, consider adding a local item to your “wish list”. This gives your loved one unique gift ideas and you’re likely to get everything on your list! If you’re unsure of what you’d like, ask for a local gift card.

Show Your Support on Social Media Every social media account you have is a platform that has

an audience that can be engaged with. When you shop locally and do a safe curbside pickup, a helpful and easy way to help that local business is to take a picture or short video to document your experience.

1. Preheat your oven to 350°F. Line your loaf pan with parchment paper and set aside. (note: the parchment paper will help lift the cake out of the loaf pan) 2. In a large bowl, using a hand mixer with the paddle attachment, cream together the butter and sugar until fluffy. Add the eggs one at a time, mixing each egg in well before adding the next. Add the sour cream or yogurt and mix until combined. 3. In a separate bowl, whisk to combine the flour, baking powder, and salt. 4. Add half of the flour mixture to the butter egg mixture. Using a rubber spatula, fold together until just combined. Then add the orange juice and orange zest and mix until combined. Mix in the remaining half of the dry ingredients and 1/4 cup of milk. Fold together once again until just combined. 5. Pour batter into the prepared loaf pan. Using your rubber spatula, spread the batter out evenly, and smooth out the top. 6. Prepare the cinnamon crumble topping; whisk to combine the flour, brown sugar, cinnamon, and salt. Add the butter cubes to the bowl. Using a fork or pastry cutter, cut the butter into pea-sized pieces and rub them into the flour mixture until small clumps form. 7. Evenly spread the cinnamon crumb topping all over the top of the batter. Bake cake for 30 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the centre of the cake comes out clean. 8. While your cake is baking, prepare your vanilla glaze. In a small bowl, whisk together the powdered sugar, milk, melted butter, and vanilla glaze. 9. Remove the cake from the oven and let cool for 5 minutes. 10. Carefully lift the cake out of the loaf pan, remove parchment and place it on a cooling rack. Drizzle the vanilla glaze over the cake. 11. Slice and serve the cake warm.
