Editor's Letter Welcome to the Spring issue of Mississauga’s magazine!
The worst of winter is behind us and the warmer weather is upon us. It’s been a long two years and while we’re still not fully free and clear, the world is slowly moving forward. Spring is a time of rejuvenation, change and revival and I certainly welcome it. Our 35th issue is still filled with excellent and talented writers who have crafted astounding articles ranging from Tuscan wines to changing your perspective to habits for success and much more. I’ll keep this short and let you dive into this interactive issue, complete with clickable links (look for the blue flashing square on pages with links) and embedded video. If you like what you see and read, please consider sharing this in your network. The team and I would truly appreciate it. MODERN ARTISTS:
The Dreamb In conversation with Chris Hummel, lead singer and guitarist for the internationally renowned The Dreamboats 1. You're playing a hometown show at the Living Arts Centre on April 29th and after such a tumultuous time with the pandemic, what are your feelings and emotions leading up to it? Tons of mixed emotions leading up to this gig! Surreal being one of many. The pandemic has pushed so many of our shows back multiple times to the point where we were asking ourselves would they even happen? The fact that this is happening in a couple months is still hard to wrap our heads around. Anxious would be another feeling related to this show. It’s definitely one, if not thee biggest ticketed event we’ve promoted thus far. It’s been a very long time since we’ve performed a public show in Mississauga. Performing in front of our hometown crowd is not only the biggest honour, but a way to set the bar high for ourselves on delivering the best show experience we can give. We are proud of ourselves to hit this milestone, and appreciate all the love and support we’ve received along the way in our city. We owe this to our fans.
2. How has the band stayed motivated through the 2+year pandemic? The motivation has been the idea of sink or swim. A lot of our peers were going through the troubles of this pandemic alongside us. Some survived, and some didn’t. The thought of losing what we worked so hard for leading up to this point just wasn’t in the cards for us. When you love some thing as much as we love this band, you fight for it till there’s nothing left. The pandemic almost had us tap out at times, but we stayed motivated through writing and recording, talking about the future no matter how difficult it seemed, working in the stage show, and convincing ourselves that everything was going to be OK if we kept working through it, and I’m glad we did.
3. What was it like playing in Palm Springs earlier this year after such a long absence of performing? Our first show in Palm Springs since the pandemic was back in November 2021. It was such an amazing feeling getting to perform to bigger crowds during the pandemic because of the outdoor regulations allowing us to do so. It definitely spawned the idea to make the move as our regulations back home were questioned constantly. Playing Palm Springs gave us a feeling of momentum once again, something we haven’t felt for a couple years now.
4. What’s the band’s outlook for the balance of 2022? Our goal right now is to connect with as many bookers and event planners as possible to keep the calendar full while we plant our roots here in California. We have a few obligations back in Ontario that we are flying back and forth to until mid June 2022. After that point, we are making the effort to stay down here indefinitely.

5. The band has been in place for several years - how have you managed to stay together and what’s the most important piece of glue that holds this band together? Johnny and I have started The Dreamboats back in 2009. Since then there’s been a few inceptions of the band. The fact that we have attracted some of the best players that we know to join us along this journey, has definitely helped us stay motivated to keep this ship afloat. We have so much support from friends and family that we almost feel we’d be letting people down if we didn’t hold his band together. Chemistry and respect for one another has also been big reason on why this band will continue in a successful direction. Without it, I view the show as just 4 musicians making noise on stage, and we would lose what our fans have grown to love about us.
6. What are you grateful for as a band? Sometimes in mid conversation we stop and have to smile at each other when we realize how fortunate we are in this moment. To be able to travel, play and be creative because of this band. I’m grateful that we survived this pandemic. We are out here in this new chapter of our lives working on being the best versions of people and performers that we were meant to be. This band has been the catalyst to pursuing our dreams, all while being supported by our fans, friends and families along the way. We are enjoying the moment and grateful for every new experience.
7. Is writing, performing or both on the priority list for the next 1-2 years? Both are equally as important to us for the long term of this band. We developed a reputation as a live performing act but feel we have a lot to contribute on the creative side of things as well. It has been a tricky balance for us in the last as we know a lot of our income has come from performing making recording take a back seat at times. We have new team members that are savvy with video and audio production, we are looking forward to releasing tons of more content as well as really beefing us the show aspect of our live performance. We’ve been expanding our network by working with songwriters, producers, choreographers, and bookers. All in hopes of filling the calendar with more opportunities that allow the world to see what we’re all about. The past two years has allowed us to realize we are stronger than ever, we’re ready to rock!

THE 2022 BREAD & HONEY FESTIVAL CELEBRATES TH ITS 50 YEAR
by sandy pitts This year, the famous Bread and Honey Festival celebrates their fifth decade of giving back while having fun! Impressively, it is the second longest and largest running festival in Ontario, and they’ve got the awards to prove it. Moreover, it has also earned the distinction of being a Top 100 Festival for over ten years. The famed festival reflects the rich history, time honoured traditions and encompasses the strong community spirit of our town dating all the way back to 1821, which is also when the flour mill was built by Timothy Street. The Festival also gives back and is involved in the “Savings the Bees” campaign where the festival partners, many businesses and organizations are active promoting and educating the public in protecting our valuable bees. The original vision of offering an affordable and family based, fun family festival, while giving back to the community, is still the primary objective. Join us on Saturday June 4th for an exciting, fun-filled and memorable one day 50th celebration throughout the Streetsville. breadandhoneyfestival.ca

WAVING HELLO AGAIN TO CANADA’S OCEA
As travel slowly becomes reintegrated into our lives, there’s certainly no shortage of Canadian destinations to experience, or perhaps re-experience. Nova Scotia is one of my favourite places and I’m eager to rediscover it sooner than later. Blending adventure, history, culture, food & drink, creating memories, excitement, you can go at your own pace, follow the local crowd or carve your own path blending both - there’s something for everyone here. There have been some exciting changes and there are still the timeless pieces of Canada’s ocean playground that will always be anchored to entice you to visit. WHAT’S NEW Let’s start with lodging as there’s quite a bit to cover. The all-new, bespoke MUIR at The Queen’s Marque in Halifax, which is also Nova Scotia’s first Marriott Autograph Collection hotel. Recently opened, this 5-star hotel has it all. From 109 rooms, custom designed furniture, a speakeasy, a private guest-only art
28 MODERN MISSISSAUGA | SPRING 2022
gallery and hydrotherapy pool, plus more, this gem offers stunning waterfront views and ocean access. The redevelopment now has The Queen’s Marque area at nearly 100,000 square feet and nearly $200 million in private investment. Centrally and conveniently located at the edge of the Halifax Harbour, the craftsmanship and sheer elegance make this an attraction onto itself. If you fancy wine, the Inn at Grand Pré Winery in the Annapolis Valley should be on your list. As Atlantic Canada’s oldest farm winery, it’s beside a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the building was built in 1828 and has been modernized, and they make over a dozen types of wine. Blending an outdoor atmosphere with modern amenities is easily done via glamping, geodesic domes and yes, even treehouses! Quickly growing in popularity, these alternative accommodations can be as luxurious as you want, with some including Queen beds, full kitchenette, skylights, dining/living rooms, hot tubs, private decks, all while giving you breathtaking water views. These serene spots are scattered throughout the province, from Pleasant Bay to Grand Pre, to Maitland, to Tusket, and many more in between. As a bonus, White Point Beach Resort has treehouses that are on the edge of the ocean for a truly memorable experience. At Kejimkujik National Park & Historic site is where you’ll find Ôasis Pods, which is a tear drop-shaped lodging with a bed/table on the lower floor and a hammock in the loft. The cool part is you’ll sleep with a view of the stars beneath a natural tree canopy. o’TENTiks at the Grand Pre National Historic Site combines a tent and a cabin for a special experience, with eight available and as with the aforementioned, the views and memories will be spectacular. Add in the option for wilderness cabins (including a converted 1974 Boler trailer) and you’ve got options aplenty for lodging.
AN PLAYGROUND ATTRACTIONS On the attractions side, iconic Peggy’s Cove isn’t new but now boasts a new viewing deck which doesn’t compromise the views while being accessible and safer as you capture those gorgeous pictures. In the Terence Bay Provincial Wilderness Area, an hour south of Halifax, you’ll find Georges Island National Historic Site, which holds high importance. You’ll learn about its history as a prison, internment camp for Acadians, how it helped shape Nova Scotia and importantly, how it helped the overall defence of our country. Enjoy being in the water? Then Splashifax is a must! Its the city’s first floating waterpark, only 30 minutes north of Halifax. Enjoy the outdoors, a floating playground and obstacle park and impressively, it has the world’s largest inflatable unicorn at 50 feet! Once you’re back on solid ground, Kejimkujik National Park’s Uk’me’k Trail has a beautiful 6.3 km trail to explore with various terrains, along with rock crossings and the beauty of its natural features. If you love to drive as much as I do, your short list should include the Cliffs of Fundy UNESCO Global Geopark and its 165 km drive from the Bay of Funds shoreline from Derbert to Apple River. More than that, there are museums, lighthouses, beaches, hiking trails and provincial parks.

While you’re there, Local Guy Adventures offers fat biking within the Cliffs of Fundy that allows you to bike along the ocean floor and old-growth forest trails. Once you’ve worked up an appetite, the Bay of Fundy Scene Lobster Boat Tour to become educated about the local lobster fishing industry, haul some lobster traps and soak in sweet scenic attractions. It’s easy to spend a whole day there and love every minute. Yarmouth is where you’ll find Cape Forchu Lighthouse, where you can climb 77 steps to the lantern room and load up your social media feed with gorgeous pictures. Plus, you’ll learn about a light keepers bright life! An hour north of Halifax is Port Williams, home to Gourmet By Nature, which offers an outdoor Wild Kitchen on their farm property and serves up unique wild food experiences, wood fired cooking and is open year round.
MUST-SEE HOT SPOTS I’ll outline this starting in Halifax and move clockwise. As Nova Scotia’s largest and capital city, Halifax is one of my favourite places to visit. There’s an almost four-kilometre boardwalk that blends entertainment, restaurants, cafes and culture. There’s something for nearly everyone here, plus the Historic site is closely, Dartmouth is across the harbour and the feeling of being welcomed by this city is warm and engaging. An hour west is the colourful South Shore, featuring Lunenburg, the Bluenose II, quaint and cheerful atmosphere, a plethora of lighthouses, including Peggy’s Cove, an abundance of restaurants and white sandy beaches.
Two and a half hours away on the far western side is Yarmouth, home of North America’s first starlight destination where the dark sky experience is astonishing. Experience Acadian food, traditions and culture first-hand and immerse yourself in this historical gem. Head round the bend for two hours and go north to the wonderful wine region of the Annapolis Valley, home to a plethora of award-winning wineries. Equally as impressive is the wonderful whale watching locations, with these being among the best in the world. Interestingly, some of North America’s earliest settlements were here. I’ve touched on the Bay of Fundy earlier and have to add that it’s here you’ll find the highest recorded ties in the world, you can dine on the ocean floor, climb 300-foot cliffs and know that you’re sharing ground with where Canada’s oldest dinosaurs were! Next up and a three hour drive east is the birthplace of New Scotland, a warm-water beach destination, Nova Scotia’s largest and oldest winery in Jost Vineyards plus more; the Northumberland Shore. Stunning and award-winning Cape Breton Island brings you the worldfamous Cabot Trail, picture-perfect views and scenery, an exciting music scene and Celtic culture. Last but not least, we wrap up with the Eastern Shore, with their protected coastal wilderness area, boreal rainforests, terrific cold-water surfing, and more. Explore the regions authentic fishing communities and step back in time to the 1800’s via Sherbrooke Village.
A TRIO OF TRAILS Known for their fresh and delicious seafood, wonderful wines and beer, plus many local food growers, Nova Scotia has put together three “trails” that
showcase several of these. Each trail has a variety of locations around the province blended with several places to enjoy their offerings. For each trail stop you make, you’ll receive a stamp after enjoying the theme (lobster/chowder/drinks) and as you keep collecting, you’ll be eligible for prizes. The Lobster Trail, expectedly, is worldrenowned and has oh-so many stops and is an ideal way to taste the freshest lobsters around. The Chowder Trail features this classic dish and you won’t get the same one twice but you will get consistency in enjoying the best chowder around. The Good Cheer Trail is a first for Canada by mixing wineries, craft breweries, cideries and distilleries on an extensive trail map all across the province.
WHAT’S UNIQUE Yes, Nova Scotia has amazing attractions that are known around the world. However, there are some cool and unique offerings only found here that are certainly worth experiencing. Ever been on a roller coaster? Tidal Bore Rafting allows you to experience up to 13 foot waves in a Zodiac boat in the famous Bay of Fundy is like a roller coaster but on water and of course, it’s safe and exhilarating! Ocean floor dining is as remarkable as it sounds and it’s in Burntcoat Head. Dine on delicious local food and drink and take a guided tour while you’re there. Add that and then cross it off your bucket list. A picturesque picnic is made better on an island via helicopter, and that’s what you’ll experience via Heli-picnic Island Escape. Fly from Halifax to Sambro Island to experience a private beach, secluded cove and of course, lovely local food and drink. Ever learn how to log roll, tree climb, throw an axe and crosscut from seventime World Champion Darren Hudson?

You should via the Lumberjack AXEperience in Barringon, which also happens to be the lobster capital of Canada as lobsters caught here account for around 40% what’s caught in the country. Travel back in time and become a Soldier For A Day at the historic Halifax Citadel. You’ll be set up in an authentic uniform, take in firearms training (drum training for those under 16) and you’ll get to fire a true Snider-Enfield rifle. As someone who loves to drive, the Cabot Trail is one of the worlds best scenic drives that takes you nearly 300 km through twists and turns with unmatched views through Highlands National Park. Being Canada’s ocean playground, it’s only fitting that there’s an opportunity for a two-day two-night sailing adventure to sail on the Atlantic Ocean and Bras d’Or Lake, including a night on St.Peter’s Canal and navigating a lock system. Cape Breton’s Stay & Sail experience should be on your list. Fox Harb’r Resort can give you a spectacular experience via their SPA to Sable Island program. This all-inclusive three night stay blends
32 MODERN MISSISSAUGA | SPRING 2022
a day at the well-equipped resort and a second day to Sable Island via a 1.5 hour helicopter flight to Sable Island where you’ll have this majestic island in near privacy and explore its beauty with a guide. Stargazing goes luxurious via the Starlight Culinary Experience in Kemptville. Trout Point Lodge, the world’s first starlight hotel, blends a luxury wilderness adventure, a gourmet dinner complete with sommelier and at night, you’ll gaze upon millions of stars from the Tusket Rivers edge. If you’re a golfer, you’ll love Nova Scotia as there are award-winning golf courses, elegant views and the serenity of the water.
LODGING Aside from the splendid selection of hotels around the province, there are some really interesting lodging options that are worth a look. There are oceanside yurts in Guysborough, Parks Canada blends camping without the hassle via their O’tentiks, New Albany’s The Old
Ten Spot has a restored 1974 Boler on a lakeside, go small and quaint with Cabot Trail Tiny House Rentals on the Margaree Harbour, or, and my favourite, get some rest at the River Nest Wilderness Cabin for that cool camping feeling. There are also great glamping options, from the Deep Sky Observatory to the Natura Wilderness Resort to a campervan to channel your inner nomad. Back to the water theme, you can sleep on floating cottages, a wooden schooner or La Boatique, the east coasts first floating B&B. (I’d do all of them, personally!) Add in the nearly 200 lighthouses across the province, fantastically fresh seafood and, well, all their food and drinks, small town charm scattered throughout and each city/town/village offering a unique experience and piece of history, and Nova Scotia is woven together with fabulous fabrics of history, charm, community, excitement and one of Canada’s premier destinations. I’ve been before and will certainly go again and again to rediscover all that Nova Scotia has to offer.

BADLANDS AMPHITHEATRE
As a musician for nearly my entire life, I have an appreciation and fondness for live music. Yes, the artists are the key attraction but the venue also contributes to the overall experience. An hour and a half north east of Calgary in Drumheller is where you’ll find one of my new favourite Canadian outdoor venues, the Badlands Amphitheatre (BA.) Beautifully placed in the heart of the Canadian Badlands, the BA is enveloped by simply spectacular scenery, with dazzling daytime and exhilarating evening views. With room for 2,500 guests, this non-profit is a multi-use space, housing live theatre performances, concerts, operas, fireworks and movies. Having toured the grounds and sat in a variety of seats, there really is no bad seat in this picturesque venue. I was fortunate to take in their 2021 Roots, Blues & BBQ Festival during my visit because, well, blues and BBQ are right up my alley. The Hello Darlins, a six-piece Americana and roots band, sounded just as good sonically as the headliner, Matt Anderson, a solo singer-songwriter, which speaks to the versatility of the BA. Looking forward, a new addition will be the Badlands Art Centre and Studio, a two-story 8,000 square foot indoor creative and event space, which includes a 2,500 black box theatre. With live events slowly returning, the BA will be a prime destination for locals and visitors looking for a unique outdoor experience. A big shoutout to the Quality Inn Drumheller that gave me a soft bed to keep tapping my feet to after the concert and a plush pillow to rest my head on, all while being close to the BA. badlandsamp.com

WATERTON LAKES NATIONAL PARK Canada’s 48 National Parks are a treasure, each with unique allure. Carefully nestled in the southwest corner of Alberta is the majestic Waterton Lakes National Park. It’s a marvellous marriage of Alberta’s prairies and the peaks of the Rocky Mountains, creating stunning views that showcase its raw beauty and enchanting environment. At 505 square kilometres, there’s an abundance of nature, wildlife, dozens of hiking trials, water activities and more to delve into. To get a sense of the waterways, Waterton Shoreline Cruises offers a 1.25 hour cruise hosted by local experts for an authentic, detailed look at the area. Bring an empty SD card and clear space on your phone as you’ll want to capture all the staggering views. As you glide across the water, you’ll get historical information, get a rare view of waterfalls, geological formations, sky-scraping cliffs, and likely catch a glimpse of local wildlife. I’m far from a cowboy but am confident with my four gaits (walk, trot, canter, and gallop.) Alpine Stables Horseback’ Riding’s Prairie Grasslands Ride saw a small group of us embark on a leisurely three-hour tour of the area, meandering through astounding Aspen forests, several stream crossings and of course, a distinctive view of the mountains. There’s a blend of on and off-trail adventures as you wander through the beauty of the area. The guides are knowledgeable and engaging, there are photo opportunities galore and there’s just enough adventure without it being overwhelming for those wanting something on the tamer side. There’s something mesmerizing about waterfalls that can have me gaze upon the cascading water and find minuscule details in the rocks and water, with the sound of falling water as the soundtrack. Cameron Falls boasts fresh mountain water descending over billion year-old Precambrian rock, showcasing Waterton’s geological uniqueness. There’s a paved path to walk up for a higher vantage point, along with a viewing bridge for a straight-ahead look, and on the knowledge side, there’s educational information on-site. The Dark Sky Experience team offers a magical view of the stars from the darkness on the edge of town. It’s fascinating to see millions of stars with such clarity. While the aforementioned is a wonderful way to get acquainted with the area with experts, the time I spent exploring on my own. I stopped counting at 12 laps of walking the shoreline of Upper Waterton Lake as the serenity of the mountains meeting the water was enchanting. I did it for all three days I was there and if you’re ever looking for a way to clear your head or truly be alone with your thoughts, this would be in my top 10 places. I found a driftwood log and perched myself there, stretched my legs out and the view was perfect enough to have the picture I took become my phone and laptop background image. I drove around Alberta for a week as part of this adventure and in a surprise to nobody, I ventured out often to find new roads, one of them being Red Rock Parkway and the other being Township Road 14A. Both provided ample twists and turns, spectacular views and ran alongside creeks and lakes, which as a Pisces, makes me quite happy. I recharged each night at the Bayshore Inn & Spa, which also made me happy because it’s the only hotel on the shores of Waterton Lake.
I kept the doors and windows open each night to fall asleep and wake up to the sounds of water and nature. Dining-wise, while it’s not precisely “water front” dining, there are elegant views of the water at the Lakeside Chop House, which is part of the Bayshore Inn. There’s a variety of wonderful west-coast inspired meals with an inviting atmosphere. A short stroll away is the Red Rock Trattoria, which serves up impressive Italian cuisine, wonderful wines. Pearl’s Cafe, in the heart of town, is a hotspot for nutritious food and a smart choice for keeping your energy levels up as you explore the surrounding area. I giggle as I write this and yet at their thrice… Weiner’s of Waterton is a helluva gourmet hotdog spot! Take your favourite type of hotdog, amp it up by 100% and then you’ve got what you’ll find here. Trappers brings authentic and bold BBQ to town and smoke their meats on site. This family owned and operated restaurant will keep you full and happy. Of all the National Parks I’ve experienced, Waterton delivered something the others haven’t. There’s an aura of excitement and tranquility, placed perfectly in Canada and I highly suggest balancing your time with exploring yourself and soaking in what’s established. mywaterton.ca

“Do you like to get high? I’m too afraid to try.” These words are permanently etched onto my brain after growing up a fanatic of Big Sugar, listening to Gordie Johnson croon such lines over my speakers while listening to “The Scene” from their 1998 release, Heated. One can only guess as to which of the cornucopia of drugs Gordie was referring to, however, now that our country has legal access to such drugs as caffeine, alcohol, and cannabis, we should look to the future of what Gordie might be afraid to try. This is because in Canada, a psychedelic drug renaissance is quietly building momentum, based on the results of exceptionally promising mental health research. Compounds such as psilocybin (the fun stuff in magic mushrooms), lysergic acid diethylamide (better known as LSD or acid), and 3,4-methylenedioxymethamphetamine (the non-scary and euphoric part of ecstasy… though strictly defined as more of a cousin as opposed to a true psychedelic) are currently being explored by the scientific community as potential saviors to a society plagued by mental health issues. Many of these substances were not criminalized until the war on drugs was established in the early 1970s with the signing of the United Nations Convention on Psychotropic Substances. Prior to this, these drugs were the fuel that guided much of the peace and love movement of the 60s. In fact, many point to the US government’s desire to target groups such as hippies and people of colour as the impetus for the war on drugs; it gave police the ability to search and arrest “suspicious individuals” on the grounds of such drug-related charges. And sadly, the loud voice of Timothy Leary and his army of psychonaut followers were all too easy a target for these new policies… leading to a long winter on understanding the value of psychedelics. While Leary and others were conducting their own research on the positive effects of psychedelics on expanding consciousness, creativity, and coping with trauma, catch phrases such as “turn on, tune in, drop out” became frightening war cries on the ears of many scared conservative parents. This time around, the psychedelics movement is quieter, more careful, more rigorous, and yet potentially more ambitious. Leading the way are organizations like the Multidisciplinary Association for Psychedelic Studies (MAPS), who are bringing psychedelics back into prominent discussion in the biggest way since the 1960s.
This is because MAPS understands the value of these compounds for addressing issues as far ranging as PTSD, eating disorders, anxiety, addiction, and even end-of-life care. The promising results that are beginning to emerge are too important to leave to polarizing voices such as Leary’s, and instead have been replaced by the cold, rigorous, professional voices of a small army of dedicated researchers. Canada is playing key roles within this army. With our slightly more relaxed drug laws, world-class academic institutions, and history of psychedelic research, countless universities across the countries are beginning their own investigation into the power of fungi and synthetic chemicals. Researchers at U Vic are exploring MDMA-assisted therapy for PTSD. A team from Laurentian showed that ayahuasca might be a potent therapy for difficult eating disorders. A U of T study investigated the effects of microdosing LSD and psylocibin on reducing anxiety and improving focus. And perhaps most excitingly, a recent article out of the UK in the Journal of Psychopharmacology is helping to alleviate many of the concerns surrounding this work. In a randomized, doubleblind, controlled study with healthy participants, researchers were able to show that moderate doses of psilocybin (the psychoactive component found in some mushrooms) were well tolerated and didn’t have any short or long term negative effects on cognition or emotional processing. This study is a welcome scientifically rigorous checkmark for what any regular user was well aware of: shrooms really aren’t that dangerous. Though it is an atrocity that possession of these substances enables the prosecution of people to a degree similar to murdering someone in many countries, studies such as this one are becoming increasingly common and are showing the gradual shifting of our society towards an acknowledgement of the power of these tools. While it may not be safe to grow, sell, buy, or possess psychedelic mushrooms, at least this recent study seems to indicate that it’s safe to use them, and other research shows that such compounds may be the answer to the growing deluge of mental health challenges plaguing our society.

REFRESH YOUR OUTDOOR LIVING SPACE It’s that time of year where we take inventory of what our current backyard set up is like and start looking at new additions and or replacement pieces to truly transform it into an outdoor oasis. The Home Depot has a wide selection of items to help transform your vision into a reality from key pieces to tasteful accents and everything in between, regardless of size.
LIGHTS
To shine some light and create a memorable mood, lanterns are an easy addition to illuminate your space. I’ve got a few Hampton Bay 11-inch Natural Wood Metal Glass Lanterns with a rope handle, which not only looks clean but allows for taller candles to be placed inside. If firelight isn’t your thing, I’ve got your solution via the Hampton Bay Solar Powered 18-inch LED Light that gives you a 10-hour run time. What completes my backyard are the minimalistic, gorgeous accent 10-Light 12 ft. Plug-In Indoor/Outdoor LED Copper Fairy String Lights. They’re stylish, can be strung in most places and adds just enough brightness.
ACCESSORIES
All the key corners are covered; let’s fill in the gaps. BBQ
A patio isn’t complete until there’s at least one BBQ in place. “We’re now seeing Canadians add secondary outdoor grills to their collection, recognizing each produces different results and offers versatile functionality,” says Janna Millious, senior barbeque merchant at The Home Depot Canada. “If you currently own a propane or natural gas grill, we recommend a pellet grill or smoker for your backyard, or a portable grill if you’re an outdoor adventurer. A prime candidate for a main BBQ is the Bakerstone Multi-Function Cooking Centre, which can double as a two-in-one pizza oven in addition to handling your primary BBQ duties easily. The primary four-burner grill and secondary two-burner firebox is versatile and can easily keep everyone well fed. Taking up less real estate but still functional is the Nexgrill Neevo Digital Propane Gas BBQ, complete with digital technology and 714 square inches of cooking space. You can ignite it directly using the smart touchpad and check the temperature via your smartphone. Smokers are increasingly popular and taking up a small amount of space is the Masterbuilt Pro Series Pro Series 4-Rack Dual Fuel Smoker. They’re easy to use and with a careful eye on the clock, you can have a fantastic, flavourful feast.
SEATING
On the patio furniture side, the trend is versatility, durability, and re-configuration. Megan Schroeder, patio merchant at The Home Depot Canada says “There is so much potential to transform your outdoor space into your personal sanctuary where you can rest and unwind. When selecting your patio furniture, look for durable materials, modular designs that require minimal assembly, and re-configurable elements that create easy storage solutions. One of our favourites is the Hampton Bay Napa 6-Piece Woven Steel Patio Conversation Set as it features multiple moveable seats, can set up to optimize space and is compact for storage. Throw in a couple of accent pillows, tasteful lanterns for that hint of light and you’re ready to provide your guests with comfort and style. Need something smaller? Crack open an egg patio chair. There are different shapes, sizes, styles and there’s bound to be something that fits your needs. For the in between, there are chaise lounge chairs, rocking chairs and wicker chairs.

6 COMMONALITIES OF
SUSTAINABLE SUCCESS Over the last 14 years I’ve had the pleasure of working with a number of people from varying backgrounds looking to take control of their health and fitness once and for all. Despite coming from varying backgrounds, and levels of experience most of our clients had many similarities, in personality, drive and determination, yet vast differences when it came to their progress and outcomes. While this perplexed me for a while, I realized that I needed to dig a little further to see what the successful people had in common with one another. 1. INSATIABLE CURIOSITY My most successful clients were always the most curious ones. Why this exercise? Why this supplement? Why do I feel better in some workouts than others? This curiosity leads to seeing every new opportunity, failure and success as a chance for reflection, evaluation and adjustment going forward.
determined are important to you? An inner circle that wants to help you become the person you want to be is one worth keeping. 6. A VARIETY OF OUTLETS It turns out, most healthy people don’t actually spend 7 days a week going to the gym. After all, what’s a better reward for mindfully developing your health than using your body for what it’s intended - movement. Try new activities. Learn new sports. Ride a bike. Learn how to ski. Take some tennis lessons. Go for a swim. Hike a trail. There’s no one special thing you need to do to reach your health and fitness goals. No magic pill you’re missing, or special diet advice that you haven’t heard yet. Your healthiest self is simply a journey that’s patiently waiting for you to take it. All that’s left is for you to decide if you want to take it and change or if you want to play it safe and remain the same.
2. HABITUAL PROGRESS It’s a fact that willpower is finite but what is infinite is the power of our habits. Good habits, developed intentionally, have the beautiful side effect of freeing up our brains and willpower to be focused on things we don’t want to but need to do, rather than things that should be a regular part of our lives. 3. IT’S A LIFESTYLE NOT A DESTINATION. When it comes to making progress with your health and fitness there’s no such thing as ‘being done’ with your health. The healthiest version of you is actually the person you are when you’re living your healthiest life. It’s not about a temporary change in behaviour, until you reach ‘healthy’. The solution is to start behaving as you’re already healthy - go for walks, save the wine for the weekends, cook one more meal a week - and make that a part of who you are now and going forward. 4. FOOD MATTERS We live in a culture where everyday is an occasion to treat yourself. Appetizers and desserts are commonplace at every meal. Instead of jumping on the latest diet bandwagon try making an effort to eat foods you’re proud of most of the time (not all), and you’ll be well on your way. 5. A SUPPORTIVE INNER CIRCLE Does your inner circle of friends and family support you? Do they encourage you to keep pushing on to goals that you have

THE POWER OF MUSIC by elaine kapogines
In conversation with Darren Hamilton
Darren Hamilton is the artistic director of the Waterloo Region Mass Choir. Darren joined Modern Mississauga to chat about the choir’s EP release, entitled “Not Powerless.” The first single and accompanying music video drops on April 8, with the full EP release on April 29. For more information, visit www.wrmasschoir.ca. Can you tell us a bit about Waterloo Region Mass Choir (WRMC) and why you started it? WRMC is a community gospel choir, composed of members who follow the Christian faith. We are a multicultural, intergenerational choir. In the fall of 2017, my wife Vanessa and I moved from Mississauga to Kitchener. We’ve been involved in gospel music for 20-plus years, including the Juno-nominated Youth Outreach Mass Choir and Juno-award winning Toronto Mass Choir. When we moved to the Waterloo Region, we quickly noticed the lack of a gospel music presence and felt the need to respond, so we started the Waterloo Region Mass Choir (WRMC) in the fall of 2018. What do you wish more people knew about gospel music? Gospel music is not only the music of the Black church, but it’s an important part of Black culture. It has influenced — and been
influenced by — many other genres, such as blues, jazz, soul, R&B and pop music. Although the lyrical content of gospel music often connects to the Christian faith, the themes of hope, joy, determination, perseverance and peace are very accessible and relevant to people in society — regardless of their beliefs or cultural background. Can you tell us a bit more about the EP and how it came about? In December 2019, WRMC participated in the annual Yuletide Spectacular holiday concert series with the Kitchener-Waterloo Symphony and Grand Philharmonic Choir. During intermission and after the event, we were approached by many people inquiring if we had music available for purchase. These inquiries became the spark that got our EP project going. I had been writing gospel music for a long time and already had unpublished songs that were ready to be recorded. But just as we began preparations to start recording, the pandemic hit. We persevered over the last two years and are thrilled to know our music will be out in the world soon. Why was the documentary an important part of the project? Documenting our creative and recording process was an important part of this project because we wanted to help audiences learn more about us. The first episode of our five-part documentary series introduces audiences to the WRMC and what led us to working on our debut EP. The remaining four episodes will focus on each of the songs on the recording, providing behind-the-scenes footage of our recording process, interview segments with key creatives, and testimonials from choir members about what these songs mean to them.

GREG CARRASCO: HAVING THE RIDE OF A LIFETIME by praveen amirtharaj The Greg Carrasco Show has been a Saturday morning staple on the GTA airwaves for the past 13 years. He now brings his hugely popular show to Sauga960AM Saturdays at 8a to listen, to reflect and to learn. PRAVEEN AMIRTHARAJ: You are a very successful and recognized automotive executive but how did you get into Broadcasting? GREG CARRASCO: It was an accident. Somebody invited me to do an appearance on a radio show 16 years ago. They needed an automotive expert and they wanted my opinion. They thought I was funny and I was able to convey a message through humour and levity. So they invited me a few more times. That's how it started. Actually, you know, I never thought of myself as being interesting enough to be listened to but it was a talk show and the callers told me otherwise. It got to the point that we couldn't cram so many phone calls in one hour and then they offered me two hours and then it was two hours a month. And then it became two hours a week and then it became 3 hours a week. PA: You had a tough childhood growing up on the streets of Santiago Chile. But now you are a successful Auto Executive
60 MODERN MISSISSAUGA | SPRING 2022
and Broadcaster. What are the three most important things you learned along your journey? GC: Oh, that's a good question. I think that out of all the things that that I didn't get genetically, there was one gift that I was very conscious of and it was the gift of self awareness. I knew how much I didn't know, and I think that now I understand myself a little bit better. I suffer from a tremendous amount of imposter syndrome. I never feel that I'm good enough, so I decided to just try to be better than yesterday. There will always be somebody smarter, better-looking, taller richer than you and I decided to start comparing myself to myself. I had to work a little harder than just about everybody else around. I stayed committed to the fact that I wasn't married to my ideas. I stayed committed to the fact that maybe I was wrong and I think that staying nimble and entertain new ideas. Growing up without parents, it's both a terrible thing but its also an amazing thing, because no one ever told me “No”. So I grew up very healthy disregard for the impossible. PA: After listening to you for 3 hours every Saturday morning, what do you want your audiences to take away from your show? GC: I would consider a show a win if amongst the 70,000+ people that listen to the show every weekend, that there is at least one
person that says, “man, I'm not alone”…, we all seem to be trapped in this cranial walls of ours thinking that we are alone dealing with problems and with life and with trials and tribulations, and we feel so alone. It doesn't matter how surrounded you are by people when you shut the light off and it's just you. I don't think that there are many of us that haven't felt alone at some point. I certainly have. When you hear a voice in the radio and you understand that this person is just as scared as you and just as curious as you are and just as passionate as you are and the same thing that troubled them is troubling you. And then you can say, man. “I'm not alone”, “I can get through this... “ I think that is the only thing that I want. It's simple message. PA: Who has influenced you the most and why? GC: Oh, man, there are so many. There are three people, one is Arnold Schwarzenegger, you might laugh at this but you know, once you start reading or digging a little bit more into his life, you'll understand that he never took “no” for an answer. He managed to figure things out and make it work for him in a way that we can only dream of. He is as close to a deity living. The second person, is Gary Bowman. Gary Bowman hired me in the car business 30 years ago. He remains a very, very good friend of mine. I had no idea what a good man was like or what he looked like or how they talked or behaved. Gary
Bowman inspired me to be to be a good person. The third person who influenced me greatly would be Professor Jordan Peterson. He has been a huge inspiration for me, showing me the importance of standing up against the crowds for something that you believe. He's been an inspiration for me to not to stop my voice. It's more important to me to be true to myself… PA: On a lighter note, what’s the one meal you can’t live without? GC: I have steak every day. For at least the last 9 years. I eat once a day and I will have a steak, I would have spinach, I will have my avocados and that is my meal every single day. I'm going to share a little known fact, I prefer my steak really raw. Like, raw, it's just cold. Put a little bit of lemon, put a little bit of salt, put a little bit of cumin and it is delicious.
Listen to the Greg Carrasco Show every Saturday at 11am on Sauga960AM.

Old-world wines can be intimidating. There are appellations to learn, terms to understand, and entirely fair questions about reputation versus value. The early March release for the LCBO’s Vintages section included several intriguing and well-priced bottles from Tuscany, which provides a perfect opportunity to dig into this western Italian wine region and take a closer look at some of these details. Positioned north of Rome and centred around the region’s capital city of Florence, Tuscany is best-known for its red wines, most notably the Sangiovese grape that forms the basis for the Chianti, Brunello di Montalcino, and Vino Nobile de Montepulciano styles. Italian wines typically fall under one of three classifications. DOC (denominazione di origine controllata, which translates to controlled designation of origin) is used for wines that are made in the traditional style of a given appellation, using grapes that are native to the region and under controlled harvest yield and aging limits. DOCG (denominazione di origine controllata e
68 MODERN MISSISSAUGA | SPRING 2022
garantita, or controlled and guaranteed designation of origin) is the highest classification for Italian wines and appears on bottles that have been analyzed, tested, and approved by licensed panel under stricter requirements than what’s required for DOC wines. And then there’s the IGT designation, indicazione geografica tipica or indication of geographical typicality. In the mid-20th century, a group of Tuscan wineries— most notably Tenuta San Guido, producer of the Sassicaia label that’s commonly identified as the originator of this trend— planted vines for grapes not native to the region and began releasing wines made with them to the general public. These winemakers felt restricted by regional controls and wanted to produce outsidethe-box wines they felt could be of equal or superior quality to DOC wines. Initially, these wines were forced to carry the label vino da tavola or table wine, Italy’s lowest designation, because they didn’t follow the rules. But they quickly gained immense international recognition and became known as Super Tuscans, “super” in this context meaning they fall outside the region’s typical style. In 1992, the IGT Toscana designation was created to give these wines more respectful recognition of their high quality.
Whether you opt for a highly traditional DOCG wine or an outside-the-box Super Tuscan, it’s not necessary to spend a great deal to find excellent Tuscan wine. All three of the bottles below are available at the LCBO for less than $25, and all of them are stellar examples of the gems you can find once you know which terms to look for that will lead you in the right direction.
POGGIO CIVETTA 2019
Governo All’Uso Toscano // Tuscany, Italy (IGT) Vintages #14362 // $22.95 The Governo All’Uso Toscano method involves partially drying some of the fruit as part of the winemaking process, which gives it a richer flavour and finish. It pours with a deep red, almost opaque colour and a nose full of the ripe cherry notes that are traditional to the Sangiovese grape. The flavour is medium-bodied and fruity, with the initial promise of cherry melding with strawberries and other red fruits in a silky mouth feel. This would benefit from another year or two in the bottle, at which point it will pair beautifully with an herbcrusted pork roast. Score: 8.5/10.
Tour of Tuscany ZINGARI 2018
Toscana // Tuscany, Italy (IGT) Vintages #244228 // $19.95 This Super Tuscan is made from equal parts of Sangiovese, Merlot, Syrah, and Petit Verdot. A nuanced nose of plum and chocolate and a tantalizingly herbaceous quality carries through into a wonderfully mellow palate of ripe red berries. This would be a brilliant wine to stock up on as we edge closer to barbecue season. Pair it with burgers or a grilled flank steak. Score: 9/10.
VILLA TRASQUA 2017
Chianti Classico // Tuscany, Italy (DOCG) Vintages #121160 // $18.95 A Chianti Classico is as traditional as Tuscany comes, and this one carries the prestigious DOCG designation at less than $20 per bottle. Its translucent garnet colour welcomes you into the style’s typical nose that’s heavy on ripe cherries, found here with some lightly spiced undertones. Cherry flavours continue into the palate along with stewed plums and light tannins. Break this one out for the barbecue as well alongside a saucy rack of pork ribs. Score: 8.5/10.

With travel slowly opening up again and travel season upon us, chances are many of us will travel, regardless of medium and distance. Whether you’re away for one night or one week, it’s key to keep your home safe in your absence. With the abundance of modern technology, there are many ways to enjoy your time away without worrying about what’s happening at home.
SECURITY CAMERAS
The peace of mind that comes with moving pictures via a security camera is worth the investment. Let’s not think the worst of anyone but if someone does make bad decision to try and upset your home, having a camera system is a strong deterrent.
MOTION DETECTORS
These come in handy as they can activate indoor and or outdoor lights if someone gets too close to your place. There’s plenty of settings and some are smartphone compatible.
LIGHT TIMERS
Instead of your home being dark after daylight when you’re away, having your lights go on via schedule can lower the risk of an unwanted visitor. Consider picking alternate times if you’re away for a few days in a row to avoid the predictability.

P YOUR HOME SAFER CONNECT WITH YOUR ALARM COMPANY
A quick call to let them know what you’re up to vacation-wise can have your account flagged (in a good way) so that if anything does happen, they can act/react accordingly.
VIDEO DOORBELL
I’ve got one of these from Ring and I feel with the popularity, ease of use and advanced technology, these could one day replace conventional security cameras. Directly connected to your smartphone, there are options for two-way conversations, motion sensors and you can keep a history of activity.
HAVE MUSIC PLAYING VIA YOUR SMART SPEAKER
If would-be thieves/burglars sense there’s someone in the house, they may be less likely to intrude. Having music playing gives your place a “lived in” sense and can help deter them.
SMART LOCK
They’re kinda big and bulky but what they lack in grace they make up for in functionality. They’re also easy to network with your other smart home security systems for an added layer. Additionally, there are ones that work with your fingerprint, which is kinda cool.
