JK: So one small brick turned into a massive castle? by jay kana behind the curtainbehind the curtainWITH ILLUMI’S

NORMAND LATOURELLE : I built the first light sculpture that was a huge horse in front of the Big Top in Chicago. I wanted to emphasize that it was inside the Big Top of Cavalia, it was a horse show so I had built those sculptures. As we were along a highway, I was not able to put any signs. So I said let’s do a big light sculpture! When we finished the sculpture and it was lit the first time at night, I said, “Oh my God, this is so beautiful! I have to do something with it. This is the best idea I’ve had in the last century!” I was very excited and started having ideas and started to do drawings. This is how we do it – little by little, and it ended up being Illumi; the world’s biggest light, sound and multimedia show. We have the horse world based on those first Chicago sculptures.

JAY KANA: What inspired you to create Illumi?

Normand Latourelle is a creative visionary in a constant quest for innovation, a pioneer of Cirque du Soleil and has his name proudly associated with dozens of achievements and projects over a 40+ year career. Here’s our exclusive interview with him on his upcoming show, Illumi, happening in Mississauga this September.

modern ARTS

JK: What can guests expect when they experience Illumi?

ILLUMI’S MASTERMIND

NL: I like to say this is a small Disney World. You can have the same feeling as child just to enjoy, and as an adult, you return to the child. Lights always create something – looking at fireworks creates something sparkling in your eyes that excites you. Illumi turns the fireworks into lights. You get this feel-good experience that’s a lot of fun. I haven’t seen anyone coming out of Illumi without a smile. Everybody’s happy and wants to return. It’s a very generous event; we have all these themes and people go through different worlds. It’s like entering into a cartoon but live. What are the chances you get to travel through a cartoon-ish type of giraffe and going through dragons, going through lions, a horse field… it’s a feel-good show filled with happiness.

NL: Exactly. It was beautiful, because we did those horses. Most of them are white so I wanted to keep them white. And we found some lights that looked a bit gold, like a warm white. And when they came out it was like a huge piece of gold in front of the Big Top (the biggest touring tent in the world!) It created such an impact that it lit the idea.

curtaincurtain

JK: Why did you select Mississauga to host Illumi?

JK: You’re a visionary with a lifetime of experience in creating magical shows - How has Illumi added to your creativity? NL: I’ve been working most of my life with live shows. Now, this is light, not live. The challenge is to stage every set to make the audience become the live part of the show. It’s an immersive experience because of the life. At the Laval exhibit, every foot, there’s somebody taking a picture and creating a memory; a memory of something that’s so beautiful. I can go a step further than live action; the audience becomes the live action, live actors and performers through this fabulous journey. They improvise everywhere and have fun performing with the sculptures and lights.

JK: What’s your favourite aspect of Illumi? NL: The audience – they make it all come to life. We’ve created a live culture – it’s not like a museum. I’m not a big museum fan because you always watch at a distance. You cannot touch or smell. Rarely, you’re able to be close to with the artifacts offer you. With Illumi, the artifact is a part of your life because you share the space, you can climb on them, you can run to them and this is something special. To experience Illumi, mississauga.illumi.comvisit

NL: I was looking for a large location and, in touring with Cavalia in 2017, one of them was in Mississauga. We did very well and had very good contacts. I reached out to City Council and said “if you ever find the location, this is what we’re looking at doing.” We were directed to the land owner Illumi will be held on and we made the deal. In terms of marketing and access, Mississauga is well-located as all highways go to and through Mississauga. As they say in French, “Tous Les Chemins menent a Rome” or “All the roads lead to Rome”, we can say in Canada “all the roads lead to Mississauga.”

How has your adventurous life contributed to your writing? The greatest contribution has not been the country I’ve seen (although that is significant) but more so the people I’ve met. At the end of the day, writing is about the human condition, and the more characters a writer encounters, the richer his writing will be. Hopefully!

In conversation with Canadian creative storyteller and award-winning author, Brad Smith. What inspired your latest book, Copperhead Road?

Of all the books you've written, which one was the most challenging to write and why? Busted Flush by far. It’s a complex look at our “collectible” society, how people are for some reason obsessed with owning an item once owned by a famous person, whether it be Marilyn Monroe’s slippers or JFK’s golf clubs. Busted Flush is about a man who discovers photographic negatives of Abraham Lincoln delivering his renowned speech at Gettysburg. The story chronicles the hustlers, thieves and ne-er-do-wells who try to obtain the images, all for nefarious purposes. The research was very extensive and included several satisfying trips to the battlefield at Gettysburg.

Of all the books you've written, which one was the most exciting to write and why?

What words of wisdom do you have for aspiring writers? For starters, just one word – READ. I meet a lot of aspiring writers who for some reason have never read much. That is the essential starting point. Another tip, is to be willing to re-write. Ernest Hemingway once said that, “the only kind of writing is re-writing”. Old Hem was correct. Learn to become a good self-editor.

MODERN ARTIST:

I have always been intrigued by that period of history and the locale –Appalachia during the Great Depression. The poverty level there was incredible. And I been interested in the juxtaposition of the two subcultures – the manufacturer of moonshine whisky and the early days of stock car racing. I have known for years that the early moonshine runners became expert stock car drivers, due to the skills learned while outrunning the authorities (revenuers) along the treacherous mountain backroads. I was not aware that it worked both ways. The fledgling racers were often lured to transport moonshine. As usual, necessity was the mother of invention.

Who would you want to write your biography and why?

Probably The Return of Kid Cooper. It’s a later western, set in 1910, for which I was fortunate enough to win the Spur Award for best western novel from the Western Writers of America. I’ve been a fan of the genre since I was 5 years old, watching Roy Rogers galloping across my screen on his palomino Trigger. I waited a long time to write a western, and I wanted to make sure I was ready before I sat down to start. I felt as if I only had one shot at it and I’d better get it right.

Hmm… can I choose Mark Twain or John Prine? Failing that, either my 91-year-old mother, or my 11-year-old niece. They both think I’m bradsmithbooks.comwonderful!

20 MODERN MISSISSAUGA | LATE SUMMER 2022

With winding roads that skim the sea, fabulous food, and parks to please every preference, Quebec’s Gaspé Peninsula is an underappreciated gem. We spent seven delightful days and nights exploring the Gaspésie and left it with a renewed amazement for this picturesque portion of maritime Quebec. Our chariot for this road trip was the all-new 2023 Kia Sportage Hybrid, which you can read about in detail on pages 32 and 33. The short version is that over our nearly 4,000 km adventure, this stylish SUV was terrific on gas. We averaged 730 km per full tank, which is a measly 52 L, meaning you’re maximizing your distance. The ride is respectfully smooth at highway speeds, its modern technology has a short learning curve, and the cabin is a well-appointed, comfortable, and pleasant place to spend both short and long drives. While we’ve both visited this region separately in recent years, a return trip was an easy choice for our must-visit list for 2022. We were lured in anew by the scenery, maritime life, spectacular driving routes and overall charm and appeal of this quiet corner of HeadingCanada.westward, we opted for the path that left the most scenic and enjoyable driving roads for last, which was the counterclockwise approach. Day one saw us go from Mississauga to Rivièredu-Loup, which we did to maximize our on-road time, spend the night. From there, you can continue east either via Autoroute 20 or on the picturesque RouteA20132.briefly merges with Route 132, and Quebec’s Parc national du Bic located during this short

Park the car and stretch your legs as you enjoy beautiful coastlines, wonderful water views and inviting atmosphere. There are self-guided trails where you can discover wildlife from a distance, as well as hiking and biking options. Rolling through Rimouski warrants a stop for at least an hour as it’s home to the Pointe-au-Père Lighthouse National Historic Site. Impressively, it’s the second-tallest in Eastern Canada, and while the soaring spiral staircase can seem intimidating, it’s wonderfully worth the climb as the panoramic views are postcard-worthy. A terrific tour of the HMCS Onondaga submarine is offered at the same site, complete with a functional periscope! And on the somber yet educational side, there’s a museum next door where you can learn about the sinking of the RMS Empress of Ireland, Canada’s equivalent to theContinuingTitanic. eastbound for another 30 minutes brought us to Mont-Joli, where A20 concludes and Route 132 joins itself to become a circle around the Gaspésie. This is where we headed south into the Matapédia Valley, where we were welcomed with charming covered bridges, serene and scenic roads, and lovely landscapes. Route 132 banks east as the Matapédia River joins the Restigouche River, and it skims the New Brunswick border as it leads toward the Baie des Chaleurs, which forms the southern shore of the GaspéAlongPeninsula.theserene shores of the bay you’ll find Ferme Bourdages Tradition, which is a traditional farm that has been family-owned in the same location since 1821. From delicious pies (Jay ate a whole pie on his own…), jams, fresh seasonal fruit, and especially the wines and aperitifs made from their own farm-grown strawberries and rhubarb (in which Steph made a solid investment…), the farm is a highlight of the Gaspé’s south side.

Another location not to be missed is the Site historique national de Paspébiac, which illustrates the region’s storied fishing history throughout the 1800s. Cod replaced traditional currency and drove the local economy, and the various buildings preserve their rich community history. An operating blacksmith and detailed boatbuilding demonstrations are included with admission. Percé Rock, simply put, is stunning from any vantage point, especially at first glance as you descend upon it from Route 132. Be sure to experience it sooner than later, whether for the first time or as a repeat visitor. Unfortunately, this limestone structure

We departed from the trailhead at L’Anseaux-Amérindiens and walked the multi-use gravel path—we decided

From the dock, it’s a moderate hour-ish hike across the island’s boreal forest. The hike becomes increasingly challenging if you’re in the rain like we were, so make sure you have proper foot and outerwear. Approaching the far shore, you’re serenaded with unforgettable sounds and then comes a scent that’s… well, let’s call it unique. Step a little closer and you’ll arrive at a community of thousands upon thousands of Northern Gannets. There are educational signs on-site to help explain their fascinating and eccentric behaviours, and while Jay isn’t big on birds, even he found appreciation for this remarkable sight.

Food-wise, solid seafood spots reign supreme all along the coast, but Percé’s Maison du Pêcheur provided an impressive multi-course display that became our favourite meal of the entire trip. We’ve missed live music these last couple of years, so it was a joy to stumble upon the Pub Pit Caribou, where a live band was driving an energetic and welcoming atmosphere lubricated by plenty of delicious drink options, including house-made beers that are well-known throughout Quebec.

On land, the village of Percé is home to the Géoparc de Percé, a UNESCO Geopark with over than 100 kilometres of hiking trails, a viewing platform, and a zipline on Mont-Sainte-Anne. There’s an interesting interactive multimedia exhibit called Tektonik that educates visitors on the local geology.

This erosion has already reached the point that standing on the island that houses the rock is no longer allowed. However, there are boat tours that will bring you as close as possible by water to experience its majesty. Many of those same boat tours will also take you to nearby Bonaventure Island, which is among the best outdoor attractions in the region as it’s home to the world’s most accessible colony of Northern Gannets.

At the end, we took a short break underneath the CapGaspé Lighthouse. While the final descent down the cliffside appears intimidating, it’s absolutely worth it: the views over the end of the peninsula from below at the aptly named Land’s End Lookout are nothing short of spectacular.Stickaround in the park to enjoy the lovely lookouts, observation towers, beaches, a short hike to a waterfall tucked away in the forest, and even the remains of a fort built to defend the peninsula in World War II. We’ve been extremely fortunate to enjoy incredible roads across Canada, but we agree without question that Route 132 across the north shore of the Gaspésie is one of Canada’s very best and most breathtaking drive routes. The seaside highway twists along colossal cliffs to connect lighthouses and villages, each with its own small-town charm. Every kilometre brings a view unlike any that’s come before. This magical drive starts at the northern edge of Forillon National Park, home to Cap-des-Rosiers Lighthouse, which is Canada’s tallest. From there, to reach the town of Matane is a four-hour drive straight through. But if you truly want to soak in the experience, allot a full day to this attraction-filled route, which includes several more lighthouses that can be visited for a small fee. At one of the many rest stops, we spotted multiple pods of whales and quickly started taking video and pictures. We hardly noticed that we passed nearly an hour there, and we truly didn’t mind!

Rather than follow the same roads to head toward home, we opted to add a ferry trip to the north shore of the St. Lawrence River to our experience. There are ferries that depart numerous points in the Gaspésie toward locations along the north shore, giving you an alternate path toward Quebec City and a chance to appreciate some different scenery. Our comfortable two-hour ferry ride from Matane brought us to the village of Godbout. From there, we drove westbound on Route 138, leading us through Baie-Comeau to the village of Tadoussac. This is a great place to stop for a meal with plenty of wonderful dining options. Create time to stay longer if you can: the whale watching tours that depart from Tadoussac are truly one of a kind. As we prepared to head home, we made the short ferry crossing between Tadoussac and Baie-Ste-Catharine and saw even more whales, this time several pods of belugas swimming into the Saguenay Fjord.

modern TRAVEL Ontario has a rich history of light houses and while the majority of them can be enjoyed on land, there are a few that are only accessible via water. Sure, Clayton and I could’ve taken a power boat but as a frequent traveller, the journey holds as much weight as the destination. A quick background before we dive in… jump in kayakClaytonin! Seams is a lighthouse aficionado who’s on a quest to see all 146 of Ontario’s classic lighthouses. He’s been to 60 (nearly half!) of Ontario’s lighthouses so far since he started this journey in 2020. He invited me to join him to see these two lighthouses as he and I are both avid kayakers, we get along quite well (which helps when it’s an 800 km round trip voyage) and it’s summer, so we should spend as much time outdoors as possible. (How’s that for a massive run-on sentence!) Shoutout to Mazda Canada for having the all-new 2023 CX-50 crossover be our chariot, which easily accommodated our kayaks being strapped to the roof, provided a comfortable cabin and enjoyable driving experience on our tour. 2 GUYS IN KAYAKS 2 ONTARIO LIGHTHOUSES by jay kana & clayton seams | photos by clayton seams & jay kana

And with that… Our first stop was to Lighthouse Shoal Lighthouse on Lake Rosseau, Muskoka, about 250 km north of Mississauga in, you guessed it, Rosseau, Ontario. We parked at the Rosseau Waterfront Park, unstrapped our kayaks, and did the 30-second walk to the waterfront with our kayaks. The park has a playground, dock, water fountain, bottle filler, and bathrooms, so it makes for an ideal launching location. You can launch from the water’s edge or from a pierwe opted for the beach as it’s what’s comfortable for us and there’s a lower risk of tipping.

It’s approximately a one kilometre paddle southbound to reach the seawashed lighthouse and as we were sheltered by the bay and had calm waters, the paddle was quite easy, enjoyable and we rank it as something a beginner kayaker can do. It’s a 10-minute paddle if you’re going at a moderate pace but with it being so close to shore, feel free to take your time and enjoy the scenery and serenity of being on the water.

The lighthouse itself is well maintained that had cormorants on the top of it. Though its official name is Lighthouse Shoal Lighthouse, the light tower is locally known as simply Rosseau Lighthouse. It was built in 1890 on top of a dangerous rock shoal that ships navigating to and from the town of Rosseau had to avoid. The small tower is too small to house anyone so the keeper resided on land and rowed out to the lighthouse daily to tend to it. The lighthouse was treated to a $25,000 restoration in 2013 and today it remains in excellent condition.

Once back on land, we did the short drive to the Rosseau General Store for some mighty fine Kawartha Dairy Ice Cream as a well-earned reward for our adventure.Afterward, we drove 90 minutes north to North Bay to spend the night and departed early the next morning for our next adventure to the Southeast Bay Lighthouse on Lake Nipissing. We parked at Centennial Park in Callander, which has ample parking and you can launch from the boat ramp (we did) or via pier. The passage was challenging compared to the aforementioned route due to some light waves and we’d strongly suggest you’re at least an intermediate kayaker before embarking on this. It’s 5.15 km if you go straight across but if you want some shelter, hug the shoreline, which lifts your travels to 6.4 km one way. We shifted between medium and slow speeds across the water as there was no rush, and it took us about 90 minutes to get there with the winds against us. Always, always, always be safe on the water and have a personal flotation device, whistle, tow rope and bilge pump with you. Go at the speed that’s your comfortable with and kayak with someone who’s at least the same skill level as you. We had lunch on an unnamed island, which is now unofficially called “Jayton Island” admired our surroundings, used the washroom facilities, and then paddled for a few minutes toward Southeast Bay Lighthouse. Lake Nipissing was once a hub of logging activity and several lighthouses were built to guide the logging steamers around the lake. Today this one, Southeast Bay Lighthouse, is the last one surviving on the lake. The 6.4m tower is still an active aid to navigation and helps guide boats through the narrow channel into Callander Bay. Our voyage back to land was a touch over an hour with the wind behind us as we moved at a solid pace and once docked, it was an easy 30 second walk to the car to safely and securely mount our kayaks to the roof. In the GTA, there are numerous places to kayak that aren’t hundreds of kilometres away but if you’re looking to explore and experience more of Ontario’s northern region, these two lighthouse excursions are an excellent way to do that.

MODERN MOTORING: THE 2023 KIA SPORTAGE HYBRID by

It’s not quick or speedy but it does have ample power to get you up to speed safely. On highway and rural roads, you’ll certainly reach your desired speeds safely as you run through the six gears and some, myself included, would prefer an increase in torque. Maneuverability is respectable for this compact crossover handling high-speed highway turns, twists and bends on city streets and reversing into parking spots handily. There’s minimal road noise and similar to many of its competitors, the engine can get a bit noisy with strong acceleration. There are three drive modes, Eco, Smart and Sport, that adjusts transmission, throttle, and steering response. As it’s a hybrid, I imagine Sport will see minimal usage. The interior is smartly laid out combining modern technology, spaciousness and comfort. A 12.3” touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto is standard, as are a wireless phone charger, synthetic leather seats, heated front seats, a heated steering wheel. The seats are quite comfortable with zero driver/passenger jay

We’re in the middle of an automotive shift between gasoline and electrified offerings, with the latter making a strong charge. Kia’s all-new 2023 Sportage hybrid blends the best of both and after a nearly 4,000 km road trip with it, to me it’s the segment leader. Both the EX and SX trims have power comes from a 1.6L turbocharged four-cylinder engine producing a combined 227 horsepower and 258 lb-ft. of torque through a six-speed automatic transmission. There’s also a by a 44.2 kW hybrid system motor and smartly, all-wheel drive is standard. On the road, the Sportage hybrid performs well in urban settings, maximizing the use of the battery to optimize the electric driving portion with strategic and careful acceleration.

33MODERN MISSISSAUGA | LATE SUMMER 2022

Everything is well organized and mostly within reach for the driver, save for the far right side of the infotainment screen which requires a bit of a stretch to reach far-right items. Ingress and egress are well executed and simply put, it’s a comfortable and enjoyable place to spend time in, whether it’s over thousands of kms or battling through traffic. Outside, all Sportage models are 7.1” longer, providing increased legroom and more cargo space and it’s a noticeable increase upon first glance. The new aggressive styling includes their

“boomerang” front lighting, angular grille, sleek body lines and a cleanly designed rear. It’s different enough to smartly stand out yet not over-designed like the current Hyundai Elantra. In a world where consumers want something slightly different, the Sportage handsomely ticks all the correct boxes.

fatigue felt over a week’s worth of road tripping, the rear seats have ample space for adults to be comfortable and the cargo area hosts just over 1,000 L of space. The top SX trim adds a 12.3” digital dashboard, cooled front seats, a panoramic sunroof, 360 camera, heated rear seats, a power passenger seat and a premium audio system, among others. For the price difference between the EX, the $6,700 is absolutely worth it, let alone the other safety systems and exterior upgrades included.

HYBRID

The driving factor here for any hybrid is fuel consumption and the Sportage, as per Natural Resources Canada, scores impressive figures in L/100 km with 6.1 city, 6.3 highway and 6.2 combined. For reference, I consistently traveled at least 700 km per full 52L tank. Kia’s come a long way since their inception 20+ years ago in Canada. The design elements are impressive inside and out as they’re near-luxury in fit and finish, driver and passenger comfort are outstanding, the technology is impressive, the drive feel for the hybrid is smooth, albeit a touch noisy at times, and overall, it’s a solid segment option. With an existing gasoline version and an upcoming plug-in hybrid version on the way, expect to see a substantial amount Sportage’s on the streets.

Every time a request is received, Council will thoroughly discuss it and make a decision or ask for more information to make the best decision possible.

Beyond that, each Councillor and the Mayor are automatically a member of Peel Regional Council, where a similar process of committee’s and

THE IMPORTANCE OF MUNICIPAL

Mississauga’s City Council both receives requests and recommendations for new by-laws, projects, services or programs from members of Council and then create reports submitted by advisory committees, Mississauga city staff or citizens who speak at Council meetings during a deputation or public question period .

They also make crucial decisions on several aspects of the City, pass by-laws (which are local laws only for Mississauga), create policies, approve budgets and provide programs and services with the aim of making Mississauga residents lives better.

Simply put, there’s a plethora of important decisions made about the city by these 11 Councillors and Mayor. So how exactly do they make these decisions and why is it important to have the right people on council?

Mississauga’s next election happens on Monday, October 24th, 2022 and while previous voter turnouts have been low, here’s why elections at this level are important. Municipal elections in the city have seen the following voter turnouts over the past four elections: 2006: 24.7%, 2010: 34.3%, 2014: 36.57% and 2018: 27% Federal and provincial elections are more widely covered and see candidates with higher profiles but it’s at the municipal level where the key changes take places for voters. What exactly does Mississauga’s City Council do? Well, they represent and serve the people of Mississauga. They follow rules set by the Ontario Government called the Municipal Act. With 11 wards in our city, your specific ward Councillor represents you in Council. Part of their job in serving the community is that they can and should be contacted for City related problems, ideas and or feedback. (Suggestion… .”Of course if you have an immediate need the best course of action is to call 311.)

So far, so good - we know what they do and that the majority of their job is to make decisions. Here’s the crucial part - their decisions reflect Mississauga, where you live. Why should you care? Because councillors make decisions on such items as animal control, litter, noise, fences, parking, property standards, bike lanes, zoning for all buildings, parks, community centres and even trees. Regionally there are even more reasons to care, with Public Health, housing and waste management. Of course you can’t overlook potholes on both Regional & City roads.

If you want change at a local level, want to have your voice and ideas heard and to impact your community, it comes primarily through connecting with your members of council in Mississauga. You can also become a member of some of Mississauga’s various committees that get feedback from the public on key issues. Recommendations made by committees are presented to City Council to discuss and take a decision.

These are things that can/do impact your daily life and things that the Provincial and Federal governments don’t handle.

Citizen members on committees have the same four-year term as the Mayor and Councillors, so think carefully before committing. Change happens at the ground level for communities and with municipal elections happening every four years, it’s paramount to ensure your voice is heard and that you’re aware of who could be representing you at City Hall as your wardWe’vecouncillor.gotawealth of information in our pockets via smartphones, accessibility to candidates and the ability to research and verify information that no other generation has experienced. I implore you to understand what’s happening in both today’s and tomorrow’s world within our community and to have your voice and ideas heard.

consultation happens on regional issues. Making sure that these decisions are influenced by Mississauga’s concerns is a critical part of their role at the region.

What else happens in Malton that requires volunteer power? Seva Food Bank is another excellent example of the power of volunteers. From offsite roles to help with fundraising, to sorting food and more volunteers giving of their time are part of what makes organizations like this thrive in our community.

42 MODERN MISSISSAUGA | LATE SUMMER 2022 MALTON MINUTES modern LIFESTYLE

A very special few have made this a part of their life, from serving on boards to being the person who organizes the volunteers those volunteers give back time to their community every week.

Many reasons! Some are looking to make new connections after a few years where we couldn’t be together. Others are looking for ways to enhance their resume or get their high school hours.

photo from mississauga tourism

Mr. Rogers used to say, “look for the helpers” and he was right, the volunteer helpers are everywhere in our community of Malton. You can find them at any gathering, setting up chairs, food and taking care of all of us. Make sure that you thank them when you see them, we need them to keep our community thriving.

Why do people volunteer in Malton?

maltonbia.com

The Malton BIA brought back the Malton Celebrates Canada Day event to Westwood Square July 1st and it was a huge success. Like nearly everything else that happens in Malton this would not be possible without volunteers. When you look around at an event keep an eye out for the volunteers who make it possible. To do an event like Canada Day takes over one hundred volunteers both young and old. Taking on tasks from set up, clean up to face painting it is quite the community effort.

43MODERN MISSISSAUGA | LATE SUMMER 2022 modern LIFESTYLE

One of the biggest signs of returning to normal has been summer events. To say that we all missed our festivals would be a vast understatement of the last two years although for many of the organizations that planned and executed these events the current circumstances remain more challenging than ever. We’ve all heard the phrase supply chain issues a lot over the last few months, fridges on back order, couches delayed however what happens when that’s fencing or portapotties? Festivals are time limited so delays aren’t something you can really adapt to. Not sure what I mean? Consider that Pride TO had to limit float sizes to car size as they couldn’t get route fencing for the parade. When a large organization can’t source key materials what does that mean to small community-based organizations? Based on my experience it means getting good at google, finding a new vendor for fencing, EMS support plus portapotties (which in the end cancelled) for Canada Day was just a handful of my challenges this year. Add on paid duty requests that can’t be fulfilled and entertainment groups being double booked, and you’d expect behind the stage at live events by natalie hart | photo by pier on getty images that event committees would just throw their hands in the air and say no thanks. While sometimes that’s true that we are seeing long running events not return its amazing to see how many teams are working through these issues. More than ever community groups are relying on other groups for suggestions and ideas. How do events still make it work? Focus on your core important things, for example kids activities, affordable food vendors for families. Whatever is the big attraction for your event do that one part well and nobody will notice if the tents don’t match or you’re missing a vendor. My best advice? Take care of your volunteers, thank them, feed them, get the t-shirts for them so the community knows who they are and the smiles they hand out will make the event work. Someone once described being the lead organizer for large events like being a duck, your feet are madly paddling under water but you float on the surface. Keep swimming and when the event is over look at the pictures of happy faces and know that all the changes were worth it.

WALK US THROUGH YOUR CAREER PATH IN FIREFIGHTING. I began my career in 2001. I completed recruit class and was assigned to a fire truck when 9/11 happened, which was/is a monumental tragedy for the fire service, and one that is etched in our collective identity as a firefighter in North America.

WHY IS COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT SO CRUCIAL? As a Fire Chief, I hold the role of being a community leader. It’s important to contribute to the betterment of my community through volunteer work and being a member of various Boards. This enables me to become an integral part of solving problems in my community and expands the network of people I work and interact with. As a nonprofit board director, I get the opportunity to be a representative and voice of the social culture of my community. It’s also an opportunity for me to serve in a leadership position in an organization that serves others, which is outside of the scope of fire.

MISSISSAUGA'S

In my current role as a Fire Chief, I have been able to make a difference locally by improving the fire and life safety of the community; provincially by participating on committees that make comments on new and revised legislation, and nationally and internationally with the work I do around diversity and inclusion in the North American Fire Service.

I wrote an entrance exam for the Markham, Toronto and Vaughan fire services. I made my way through a competitive recruitment process with close to 2000 other applicants and landed a job with Vaughan Fire & Rescue. I taught various industry related courses at George Brown, York University, Durham College, Georgian College, and Humber College. I was always surrounded by people in my profession, and I learned as much from them as I hope they did from me. I swiftly moved through the firefighting ranks, becoming an Acting Captain, Training Officer and then Captain. My Platoon Chief encouraged me to apply for the position of Deputy Fire Chief. Although I was a Captain at the time, he said it was always good to have a seat at the table and share my thoughts, ideas and experiences. The five-round interview process was gruelling and thankfully, I was the successful candidate. It was quite unheard of at the time, going from Captain to Deputy Fire Chief. I will always credit my Fire Chief Larry Bentley, for being able to see the qualities that I would bring to his Command Team and believing that I had the capacity to become the fire service leader I am today. As my Chief always said, “it is your first Captain that will set you on your career path.” While there are many components to being a good firefighter, it is ultimately the understanding of how to work as a co-ordinated team that’s the most important. I have always worked with colleagues that understood the importance of helping others improve on their weakness to ensure the team was strong and robust. For each and every firefighter I worked with, I am a better fire service professional for it. I acknowledge that team development and leadership will take a career to master, and I believe that I am always learning and evolving in that respect.

WHAT’S YOUR TOP FIRE SAFETY TIP? Stand by your pan! Cooking is the leading cause of home fires and often when we’re called to a cooking-related fire, the residents tell us they only left the kitchen for a few minutes. Sadly, that’s all it takes to go from routine to disaster.

HOW DO YOU STAY ACTIVE AND REDUCE STRESS?

My job requires that I make decisions, and each renders a consequence. Often, I have to make a decision where there is no great outcome. This can be mentally exhausting. I found jogging gives me time to think. It gives me the time to envision scenarios and outcomes, to analyze information, to reflect and plan. Whether it’s running/walking outside or on the treadmill, I try to incorporate this into my daily life. Our fire service has put a big emphasis on our wellness and fitness initiative; and it’s important that I embody the values of our programming.

The views expressed by Sandy K Nutrition are for educational purposes only and do not replace the opinion of your own health practitioner.

The bigger concern is that because of these midlife shifts, we might experience symptoms that we just don’t know how to address, nor do most general physicians. We may see our doctor for chronic heartburn and leave with medication that suppresses our stomach acid and this can open us up to a whole host of other issues. This includes low B12, low iron, and other low minerals and nutrients because we need stomach acid to process them. Low functioning thyroid is another common issue with midlife women, and this can contribute to not only weight gain, but depression, brain fog, low libido, hair loss, and so much more. Again, issues such as these are often not addressed at the root cause – is there a deficiency in iodine? Selenium or other nutrients that optimize thyroid function? Is the woman iron deficient? A functional practitioner will address these questions.

When we don’t address them, the problems can progress.

If you are experiencing symptoms and cannot get the help you need, I encourage you to work with a holistic health practitioner (like me!) to address your symptoms at the root cause or causes to help you feel like yourself again. IT'S EMOTIONAL

PRAVEEN AMIRTHARAJ: What first drew you to an interest in helping people?

modern LIFESTYLE

LIANA KERZNER: I started peer counselling in grade 11 in the Jane & Finch area, working with 9th graders. Many were in the foster care system and… well, every bad thing you can imagine happened to these kids. They were turning in absolutely zero schoolwork, and teachers begged me to get them to write something, anything, that could be graded. So I got them to write papers about why school sucked and the teachers were thrilled. For some of these students, it was the beginning of a feeling of acceptance: they’d asserted themselves and they hadn’t been silenced.

53MODERN MISSISSAUGA | LATE SUMMER 2022

LK: Back when I was a producer of Ed the Sock at Much Music in the 1990’s, the VP, Denise Donlon, believed that teens wanted programming that was relevant to their lives. I’m a video game developer as well. Games can help encourage compassion and help people through abuse, trauma and bullying… or they just relieve stress. With It’s Not Therapy, I wanted to see if it was possible to combine the benefits of one-on-one conversations with the ease of access of mass media.

LK: That’s where my Top Ten phrases come in. Things like “healthy goals are based on things you can control”, and “listen twice before you talk once” seem so basic, but people forget them under stress. If you think of therapy as emotional medicine, you can think of what I do as emotional nutrition.

LK: People who believe that it’s possible to feel good, live with purpose, and have a sense of control over their lives, but don’t connect to new age self-help stuff. I draw on a lot of pop culture references, like Star Wars, superheroes, the Rocky movies, Disney princesses… stuff people understand.

PA: What do you want people who listen to It’s Not Therapy walk away with?

Please email questions liana@nottherapyshow.comto

PA: Who is the It’s Not Therapy audience?

PA: What’s the best therapy for Liana Kerzner? LK: Video games! The God of War series back in the day when I was in PSTD therapy gave me a narrative structure for my struggle. Right now I’m into the Yakuza series, because there’s a character, Majima Goro, who uses the fact that everyone thinks he’s nuts to have an incredible amount of freedom and fun. If I need to get out of my own head, Doom Eternal works great. If I have to work some stuff out, an open world game like the Far Cry series or Ghost of Tsushima give me the exploratory breathing room to unpack stuff. There’s a lot of junk out there about the negative impacts of video games. I call it junk for a reason. One PS5 game gives me dozens of hours of self-examination, for less than the cost of one therapist’s visit! I swear by them. an emotional skills deficit. Can you name your feelings? Do you know how to set and enforce boundaries? Do you know how to actively listen? Are you setting healthy goals? No amount of psychiatric medication is going to replace those weak or missing skills. Too many people also treat feelings as failure instead of feedback, dismissing legitimate emotional warning signs as “mental illness”. Too many people use anger to hide more vulnerable emotions like fear and sadness. Meanwhile, people with legitimate reasons to be angry in the face of unfairness are treated asThere“irrational”.arealso some prominent people pushing the idea that you shouldn’t strive for happiness. That’s absurd. The problem occurs when you miscalculate how to maximize happiness: if doing something makes you feel good for an hour, then guilty for a week, that’s really bad happy math.

Yet still, some of us (particularly those listed on the market during the shift) are having difficulty accepting it. Properties are sitting longer on the market, buyers are adding in conditions, and we’re seeing price drops daily. Multiple rounds of negotiations are normal once again.

Before we dig into how to prepare for a recession, let’s define exactly what it is. Forbes defines it as: “two consecutive quarters of negative economic growth. During this period, which can last anywhere from months to even years, unemployment tends to rise quickly and retail sales fall sharply.”

DOWNSIZE DEBT Yes, it’s an obvious point but it’s the most crucial one. If you have a high interest credit card or line of credit, aggressively reduce your balance. While not ideal, you may have to dip into these funds in the thick of a recession so the more you have, the better off you’ll be with this temporary action.

modern MONEY

Now is a smart time to review your personal budget and make intelligent changes. Reallocating funds so more goes to debt reduction or increasing savings is an easy tactic. Really look at what can be cut (expensive coffee, dining out multiple times per week, etc.,) and what is fixed (mortgage, car payment, etc.,) to get a clear picture of your true budget.

START A SIDE HUSTLE

It’s easier than ever to make extra cash, whether it’s dog walking, voice-over work, data entry, surveys, creative work, etc. If you need to boost your income and only have a few hours a week to spare, there are plenty of options available. Plus, it may turn into a full-time job/career.

MODERN MONEY:

BALANCE YOUR BUDGET

HOW TO PREPARE FOR A RECESSION

REVAMP YOUR RESUME Downsizing is part of a recession and it can’t hurt to have a current resume on hand. Use your network and ask for endorsements via LinkedIn to boost your profile. Connect/reconnect with people in your network so if anything does happen, it won’t be awkward calling that person you haven’t spoken to in months/years.

REDUCE YOUR BILLS Call your telecommunications provider and simply ask what can be done to reduce your monthly bill(s). Often, they’re able to do something, whether it’s a short-term promo or a fixed reduction. Use coupons as much as possible, be strategic when going to the gas station to find the lowest rates, use electricity/ utilities at off-peak hours as often as possible, make your own meals opposed to often ordering.

Interest rates are rising, inflation is at a 40-year high, and gas prices have recently eclipsed the $2 per litre point. With rising costs of living, here’s how to put yourself in a better position to survive a recession:

Three fruit wines that capture the

modern FOOD & DRINK

DECANTING DIGEST:

The combination of strawberry and rhubarb is one of the quintessential flavours of summer, and this wine captures its essence perfectly. The sweetness of strawberry and gentle tartness of rhubarb come together in perfect harmony to recreate those classic summer pie filling flavours in liquid form. Enjoy it as a patio sipper on its own, or you can make the most of it as I did when I got it home: alongside a plate of cheese and crackers with fruit preserves while getting dinner ready to put on the grill. Score: 8/10.

Of the wines being reviewed here, this is perhaps the most straightforward: it tastes of summery-sweet strawberries, through and through. There’s little nuance to it, but for the right person, that can be a good thing. It’s a refreshing and predictable companion to charcuterie or chocolate-based treats on a hot day, or it can be something different for drinks on the deck all on its own. Score: 7.5/10 by steph wallcraft | photo by steph wallcraft

The farm has been owned by the same family since 1821, but it’s only in the past couple of decades that its strawberries and rhubarb have been transformed into these tantalizing tipples. In addition to the three wines reviewed below, the storefront in St-Siméon, Que., offers sparkling fruit wines, an aperitif and digestif, and a wide selection of baked goods, jams and other fruit spreads, alongside locally made artisan products. Many items can also be ordered online and shipped across Canada, though the fees are expensive. It’s best to make this a special treat to be picked up at select grocery stores or SAQ locations while passing through Quebec, or stop into the boutique during your own Gaspé road trip to find the best selection.

LÉA RHUBARB WHITE WINE

For rhubarb devotees, this wine is a beautiful thing. It combines the characteristic astringency of rhubarb with a just-enough hint of sweetness that doesn’t overpower the flavour. All but the most ardent rhubarb lovers will find this wine a little on the strong side on its own, but it’s brilliant mixed with sparkling water in summer spritzers or as part of creative cocktails, where the possibilities are endless. Score: 7.5/10.

JULIA STRAWBERRY ROSÉ $19.00 for 750 mL, $14.00 for 375 mL

A sommelier’s nose may turn upward at this notion, but a good fruit wine can be wonderful for summer sipping. Complex, nuanced, and cellar-worthy wines create a special experience, but sometimes it’s a simple and refreshingly chilled fruit wine that fits the bill on a hot day. I’ve long been a fan of fruit wines from La Ferme Bourdages and seek it out in grocery store wine aisles whenever I’m driving home through Quebec. Imagine my surprise when we happened upon the farm itself on our recent road trip through the Gaspésie and I had the entire line of products at my disposal for sampling!

>>

The amount of streaming services and programming available via websites makes a helluva case for cancelling cable TV.

The majority of cell phone plans have unlimited talking minutes and unlimited text messages, so there’s no risk of racking up overage fees there. Data usage is where things can get expensive, with monstrous charges for going over your plan. Examine your past six months of bills and if you’re consistently under your allotted amount of data, strongly consider changing your plan to the next lowest tier of data, which Canadians pay an obscene amount for cellphone and internet plans and while that’s not going to change in the coming months, there are steps you can take today to save some money on your monthly telecommunication bills. will come with a lower monthly cost. If you’re constantly over, jump up a tier and pay a small amount more per month for the plan and save a lot by eliminating over usage fees. Plenty of public places in most cities have free wifi, as do restaurants, retail stores, entertainment complexes/locations and of course, in your home, so closely review what your true nonwifi usage is and save some money.

CONSIDER OTHER PROVIDERS

The drawback is that you lose the history with your current provider, you’ll have zero bargaining power with the new company, and while you can go back to the previous provider, you won’t have the same history as you’ll be seen as an entirely newBeforecustomer.youmake the change, weigh your financial options, both short and long-term, very carefully.

EXAMINE YOUR USAGE

63MODERN MISSISSAUGA | LATE SUMMER 2022

BUNDLE YOUR SERVICES

I feel almost everyone who’s eligible for this has done this but for those that haven’t, read on. If you have your cell phone, internet, TV and home security (or any combination) with different companies, call around and see who can provide the best price if you move all your services to one provider. Chances are there’s a discount available for bundling all your services with them. They win by increasing their monthly revenue from you and you win by seeing a reduction in your bill that could be a few dollars or a few percentage points.

Cell phone companies thrive off getting new customers and in many cases, there’s a strong incentive provided to join them. The benefit is that you’ll probably be given a plan lower than your existing one cost-wise, you’ll get a device at a lower cost and or you’ll be given some kind of sign-up gift (screen protector, cleaner, case, cable, etc.)

Telus is the asterisk here as they don’t offer internet services in Ontario yet. In my case, I’ve been with Telus since they were ClearNet in the late 90’s, so with over 25 years of loyalty, I’m not giving that up to anyone, especially Rogers, who provides my internet. If I was with Bell or Rogers for my phone plan, I’d pick the better option for me and bundle my services. This option isn’t for everyone but it’s still one worth exploring.

CANCEL CABLE TV

Yes, in select cases, you’re better off paying for cable monthly instead of paying to access something via a website weekly. These are specialty programs, like racing, special events, kids shows, etc. There are channel bundles available so consider tossing the cable TV and picking specialty channels that specialize in your viewing needs.

CALL & ASK If you don’t ask, you don’t get. That’s been my approach through most of my life and it’s worked the majority of the time. I make this call to my provider every three months (once a quarter) and most times, there’s something offered to me. Whether it’s a short X-month promo of a few dollars off or a longterm X-dollar reduction, every dollar counts. The crucial point her is the approach. Do not call with a sense of “you owe me this!” or any sense of entitlement. Be honest, up front, kind and calm during the call. Simply explain that you’re looking to save money on your monthly bill and ask what options are available toItyou.helps if you’ve got longevity with the company as you can gently leverage that by saying “I’ve been a loyal customer for X years and hoping that can be acknowledged and rewarded by a reduction in my monthly bill.”
