TRAVEL
“More than my city, Mississauga is my home.” When you were a child, you depended on others for a good place to call home. Now kids are depending on you. When you were young, your neighbourhood was more than just your community, it represented a world of exciting possibilities. Playing street hockey, you dreamed of being a superstar and of winning the cup. Whizzing at breakneck speed downhill on your bike, you imagined becoming a pilot... or, better yet, an astronaut! Outside all day, you only returned home when the streetlights came on. Looking back, it was quite a charmed life. As you got older, life changed... friends moved on, and so did you. You graduated, got a job, and started a family. You made a new home. Your community got bigger, too. Your concept of ‘home’ now went beyond the definition of safe neighbourhoods, and of having parks and schools nearby. Home now meant having opportunities for employment,
great healthcare, and improved transit. Today, your expanded view of home is bigger still... now home is more than your city, it’s a thriving community where people are better connected to the things that matter to them.
Tell us your ideas and what investments you’d like to make, so that we can help turn your dreams into reality. We are the Community Foundation of Mississauga and, with you, we look forward to creating a world of possibilities right here at home for our children, and our children’s children, for generations to come.
A place everyone can call home Home is a place where people not only want to live but actually love to live. It’s a place where you can be part of something amazing; a place where your vision and contributions make for a better, more vibrant community that everyone can proudly call home! Mississauga is your home and, as such, it’s worth investing in for the long term. What are your dreams for Mississauga in the next ten, fifty, or even one hundred years?

In Situ excites in Mississauga & fires up the imagination
The wildly creative multi-arts festival that took over the Small Arms Building at Dixie and Lakeshore Road from October 27-29 promised to “Engage the past to create the future,” and this experience fully delivered on that high ambition. In Situ turned the former Small Arms Factory of “Bomb Girls” fame into a massive gallery of arts and performance spaces, brought to life by actors, musicians, dancers and videos, around fine arts exhibits, graffiti, impressionistic installations and pop up interactive performances prompting gaping jaws and broad smiles. The creative spirit of so many talents applied to exuberantly expressing themselves formed a lifelong memory for all who attended. “In Situ is an amazing experiential art festival that celebrates the important history of the Small Arms Building and displays the
exciting future of Arts and Culture in our City. There has never been a festival like In Situ in Mississauga, and my hope is this year marks the beginning of a new creative chapter in our history,” said Ward 1 Councillor Jim Tovey. Congratulations to the Small Arms Society and all your many supporters, for this was a year-long labour of love - underline labour. We’re excited for the next step in this most adaptive re-use, on the road to making a major addition to the arts, culture, and heritage sector of Mississauga.

Christmas Albums by jay kana
It’s that time of year again - holiday music is in full swing, whether it be in malls, shops, radio stations or elevators. Canada has put forth a plethora of marvelous musicians throughout the years and we’ve complied six great albums (in alphabetical order) to help make this season musically festive for you and yours!
1. Anne Murray: All 7 of her Christmas albums
Our nation’s beloved songstress Anne Murray certainly has a fondness for Christmas. So much so that she’s released seven albums worth out of the 32 she released in her career! Her 1981 10-track debut Christmas album “Christmas Wishes” was a huge hit and sold nearly 2.25 million copies, so we advise you start with that one and work your way through the other six (all quite good) albums. Anne’s adult contemporary style is a sound option to fill your house, car, or headphones as you battle the crowds this (and/or every) holiday season.
2. Barenaked Ladies: Barenaked for the Holidays
Released in 2004, one of Canada’s favourite bands presents both traditional and winter based songs. Through the 21 tracks, the laid back squad from Scarborough throw in some chuckle-worthy lines including “jingle bells, batman smells” and “Happy Birthday Jesus.” Even though the original lineup is no more, this album smartly balances between traditional and modern and is one of our favourites at the Modern Mississauga office.
3. Blue Rodeo: A Merrie Christmas to You
If you’re looking for something upbeat, Jim Cuddy and Co. have you covered with their modern Christmas album, released in 2014. The 10 song collection features two original tunes that’ll have your toes tapping in the house and will channel your inner steering-wheel drummer. The folk-rock group spruced up traditional tunes and put their rootsy and energetic feel into these songs… full marks to them for putting excitement into Christmas tunes.
4. Michael Bublé: Christmas
Our Canadian crooner’s Juno award winning, best-selling album of his career is kinda like City TV: It’s everywhere! This 16 song collection features a couple of original tunes sprinkled in with the classics, providing an easy-to-listen-to vibe. Let Bublé’s velvety smooth voice calm your holiday nerves as you circle Square One endlessly looking for a parking spot, or even as pleasant background music at parties. You’ll probably hear him in any store you visit this season.
5. Diana Krall: Christmas Songs // Oscar Peterson: An Oscar Peterson Christmas
I simply had to include both of these for risk of having one left off. Released in 2005 and 1995 respectively, these two Canadian jazz giants offer up 26 ear pleasing Christmas melodies in these two different albums. These are two of my favourite holiday albums and they see heavy rotation in my house, car, and headphones. They make for a smooth soundtrack as you’re wrapping gifts, entertaining, or sipping on eggnog by your real or plug-in fireplace.
6. A Canadian Christmas volumes 1 to 5
A five album series starting in 2004 and the current fifth album released in 2012, there’s an all-star roster here churning out Christmas and holiday tunes in a variety of genres, including pop, rock, jazz, country, folk and others. From Stompin’ Tom Connors to Bryan Adams to Carly Rae Jepsen, these albums are the patriotic buffet of seasonal tunes.

Modern ARTIST: by tyler hehn | photo courtesy of rachel crosscombe The first sip of coffee that soothes the soul and kickstarts the day. The footsteps that crunch leaves as cool winter winds envelop the air. The cold side of the pillow that calmly tingles the face. These are all things that are immensely satisfying. One more thing to add is pressing the play button on any song by Mississauga’s own Jammer’s Waffle House. This local band is comprised of four 20-somethings that have a modern sound and production quality that is far beyond their years. Lead singer/guitarist Matthew Hinojosa, bassist David Eduardo Camacho Lopez, drummer Caymen Vieira, and keyboardist Eva Pia Weiss round out the lineup, after a condensing process of sorts. “Initially we were a little bit bigger. Life had tests, twists and turns and not everybody could stick around full time, so we have gone from a couple of extra keyboard players to Eva and a really solid four-piece,” said Hinojosa. “It’s working out great…everybody brings something different to the table in terms of the changeover in personnel. I'm definitely very happy with everybody in the band right now.” Their style touches on multiple genres and their newest album, All at Once, clearly exemplifies this. The music they create evokes feelings of Elvis, Pink Floyd, Bob Marley, and Radiohead, to name a few. “We are somewhere in the middle of indie rock, folk rock, something like that, really guitar and voice oriented. We are definitely not over produced,” says Hinojosa. Call it what you want - the general consensus from a plethora of fans is that it sounds great. The album itself was a massive undertaking and took them to studios from Lake Huron to Lake Ontario. Caymen Vieira, who primarily mixed and mastered the album, said there were many sleepless nights. Once the tape sounded good in the studio it had to sound good from a phone, computer, and a car. If any one of those mediums didn’t sound perfect, it was back to the soundboard for tweaking. Vieira feels blessed to be under the guidance of some amazing producers, “We were able to work with some really talented people. One of the producers we worked with did a lot of producing for Tom Petty, Barenaked Ladies, and Rush as well.” Producers can only deal with so much; something they cannot control is chemistry. Bands can only endure so many hours inside of a studio together before tensions rise. Although the musicians are close and have a common goal, ideas can still clash and they often do. Hinojosa, Vieira and Pia Weiss all said they think that everybody performed well under the stress. “You spend so much time together, especially recording… it gets a little hot in there sometimes. We were running six or seven hour sessions just playing the same three songs over and over again,” said Hinojosa, “We did a lot together, at the same time, in the studio… with the four of us being so in sync when we went in, it was really great.” If you’re wondering about the name, here’s what Hinojosa has
to say: “When we first began playing together we had numerous jam sessions that spanned a few hours of us getting to know each other musically. We started with Jammers which then (due to our success with our song Biscuits and Waffles) translated into Jammer's Waffle House.” The foursome dedicates much of their success to the fans and supporters who have helped their young journey, along with the city of Mississauga for being so welcoming. Fresh off their CD release event for All at Once on Nov. 12 at Clarke Memorial Hall in beautiful Port Credit, these talented local musicians are only getting started. Looking forward, they know the best bet for success is to stay the path with hard work and to continue bringing their one of a kind sound to as many stages and ears as possible.

TECHNOLOGY for the Holiday Season by bil kanawati
It’s 2016, and technology is pervasive. No longer the exclusive realm of gadget geeks and computer nerds, technology is involved in many aspects of everyday life, from light bulbs to coffee makers, from the kitchen to the bathroom. Technology is all around us. This holiday season, why not put it to work for you? Whether you’re looking for gifts for your loved ones, or looking to treat yourself and make your own life easier, these tech items should be on your holiday list.
1. Aerobie AeroPress Coffee Maker - $39
You wouldn’t know it just by looking at it, but this weird plunger-cylinder brews one of the best cups of coffee I’ve ever had. It’s quicker than pour-over, not messy like a French press, more versatile than an espresso machine, more consistent than a drip coffee maker, and less wasteful than a coffee pod machine. Its unique process and short brew time (30-90 seconds) takes out most of the harsh, bitter notes while maintaining
10 Modern Mississauga | HOLIDAY 2016
a smooth, rich coffee flavour. And while the everyday Joe will appreciate how deadsimple the AeroPress can be, even the fussiest of coffee snobs who roast their own beans and measure out their coffee by the gram will appreciate the even extraction and low acidity of the coffee that comes out of this device.
worry. Battery life is good at approximately 9 hours of playback, but it does drain slowly even when it’s off, so make sure to charge it up before you plan on using it. The UE Roll 2 also comes in a variety of fun and funky colours to brighten your life on those dark winter days.
2. Ultimate Ears Roll 2 - $129
3. Philips Wake-Up Light (HF3520/60) - $179
Don’t let its size and shape fool you - this unconventional-looking portable Bluetooth speaker packs an incredible punch. Not only is it louder than speakers three times its size, but it also offers unbelievable sound quality. It also carries an IPX 7 waterproof rating, which means it can be fully submerged in up to 1m of water for up to 30 minutes. That, combined with a built-in marine-grade bungee cord, means you can hang it from your shower head, toss it in the snow, or attach it to a backpack even in the middle of a rainstorm. Then in the summer, you can bring it to the beach or the pool without
Common sense will tell you that waking up to a gradual sunrise feels better than jolting upright to the sound of a blaring alarm clock, but we don’t get to choose when the sun rises. Or do we? The Philips Wake-Up Light simulates a natural sunrise over the course of 30 minutes, from soft red through to orange and finally a brilliant yellow light that fills your room. I’ve been using one and it’s changed my life, but you don’t have to take my word for it – this wake-up light is the only one clinically proven to wake you more naturally, leave you more energized, and improve your mood in the morning.

4. Panasonic Eneloop Batteries - $19-$39
With the holidays approaching, you’re likely to have a lot of things that run on batteries, from remote controls to children’s toys. One of the worst feelings is grabbing a set of rechargeable batteries only to find that they’ve died from just sitting around. That’s where Eneloop batteries come in – they use special low self-discharge technology, meaning they can retain 85% of their charge after being stored for an entire year, and even 70% after three years! Compare that with other rechargeable batteries that go from 100% to dead in a few months (or even sooner), and you’ll see why Eneloops are the best you can get. PRO TIP: Rumour has it that the AmazonBasics brand rechargeable batteries are just rebranded Eneloops, since they offer all the hallmarks of Eneloop batteries (low selfdischarge, made in Japan). If you can’t find Eneloops on sale, these are a great alternative for a few bucks less.
6 5 5. Anova Sous Vide Precision Cooker - $199 6. NES Classic Edition - $79 Until recently, “sous-vide” cooking was a technique that only professional chefs in commercial kitchens could use, due to the prohibitive cost of equipment – often in the thousands of dollars. Now you can get consistent restaurant-quality results at home with an immersion circulator like the Anova Precision Cooker, a large pot, and a couple of Ziploc bags. The magic of this device is that its circulation process means your food cooks to the temperature you set, and never a degree more, no matter how long you cook it for. This precise temperature control means you can never overcook your food, but it also leads to miraculous results imagine a steak that’s medium-rare from end to end, or an impossibly juicy chicken breast, or salmon that’s so buttery-soft you might feel like you did something wrong. It’s so unlike any other cooking method that it might take you a little time to get used to, but once you do, you’ll never go back.
If you remember the Tickle Me Elmo riots of 1996, or the Turbo-Man toy from Jingle All the Way, then you know that every holiday season has that one thing that becomes the must-have fad item of the season. This year, that item is unquestionably the NES Classic Edition. Released November 11th to immediate shortages and widespread demand, this toy combines that special blend of nostalgia and manufactured scarcity guaranteed to whip holiday shoppers into an irrational frenzy. Beyond its fad-like appeal, this is actually a great little gadget – a miniature replica of a Nintendo system from the 80s with a controller indistinguishable from the original, 30 of the best Nintendo games built in, and an HDMI connection to plug into modern televisions. If you can find one, don’t think twice – buy it immediately! It makes a great gift for kids of all ages and adults who look back on their childhood with fondness.

Mississauga’s Civic Centre – Leading by Example in Energy Conservation “Conservation Heroes” are making a positive difference in Mississauga and one of the most influential members of this impressive group is the City itself. From its Living Green Master Plan to its 5 Year Energy Conservation Plan, the City of Mississauga has made remarkable strides in finding effective ways to conserve energy and help reduce electricity and fossil fuel related emissions. Projects such as the largest street lighting conversion in Canada, the installation of solar panels on community centre rooftops and hundreds of other conservation initiatives in City buildings have helped make the City a recognized leader in energy management. With so many projects underway and even more planned in the future, we narrowed our focus to the heart of Mississauga itself – the Civic Centre.
Facilities and Property Management staff carefully monitor equipment to ensure it continues to run efficiently.
“Modern technology plays an important role in achieving improved building performance, but if the human factor is missing from the equation, conservation results can be easily compromised,” said Daniela Paraschiv, Manager of Energy Management for the City of Mississauga. From grassroots employee-based campaigns to large scale projects, the Energy Management Team has successfully increased conservation awareness and engagement among staff. Initiatives such as “Energy Champions,” “e-Learning” and “Run it Smart” have provided the building’s users and its operators with the tools to better understand how their energy consumption affects the environment.
(Front Row, L to R) Daniela Paraschiv, Manager of Energy Management for the City of Mississauga, Raj Sheth, Director of Facilities and Property Management for the City of Mississauga, Dan Pastoric, Chief Customer Officer at Enersource and Councillor Matt Mahoney are joined by members of the City’s Energy Management Team and the utility’s Conservation and Demand Management team to celebrate conservation excellence at the City ‘s facilities.
The Power of a Team – Developing a Conservation Culture In the City’s Facilities and Property Management Division, there is a small but powerful Energy Management Team, responsible for energy conservation and environmentally sustainable initiatives. While the collective energy expertise among the group is remarkable, the team understands that employee engagement is an important factor in determining the success of their work.
This information has helped many employees change their everyday habits at work and at home. Some employees have even been recognized with an ’Energenius Award’ for helping to identify new ways to conserve energy in the building. This level of commitment to creating a culture of conservation is evident the moment you enter the Civic Centre. An electronic dashboard at the elevators greets employees and visitors, providing a snapshot of real-time and historic information on electricity, water and gas usage, along with numerous conservation tips. All Civic Centre employees can access the dashboard from their office computers and the interactive animations are a reminder that actions made today have an immediate impact and will benefit future generations.
ADVERT ORI AL
A tour of the building further illustrates the collective efforts by employees to reduce energy usage. Lights are turned off in unoccupied rooms, the temperature is consistent throughout the building and signs promoting energy conservation are posted in common areas. Using Energy Efficient Technology to Conserve These efforts are supported by several large-scale, innovative projects that improve the building’s efficiency. At the core of this innovation is an automated system that monitors and controls all operations within the building. Building Automation System If the Civic Centre is the heart of Mississauga, the building’s automation system could be considered its brain, which continuously monitors the heating, cooling, lighting and ventilation. It records trends, monitors functions and optimizes the building’s systems. Heating The Civic Centre relies on a hybrid system with one condenser and three mid-efficiency gas-fired boilers. The optimized controls for each boiler ensure that heat is available on demand. To improve efficiency, variable speed drive pumps were installed. These highefficiency pumps operate at lower speeds, thus using reduced power when less heat is required throughout the building.
Hall Challenge, the City of Mississauga has become an example of best practices in energy management. The Town Hall Challenge encourages all town halls in Canada to reduce their usage to the equivalent of 20 kWh of energy per square foot. For the last three years, the City has met the challenge and has recently gone one step further. Mississauga’s Civic Centre is currently a finalist for ‘Most Efficient Town Hall in Canada.’ “Although the Town Hall Challenge is a friendly competition among all cities in Canada, we take it very seriously,” said Raj Sheth, Director of Facilities and Property Management at the City of Mississauga. “The hard work of the Energy Management Team to educate employees and develop a conservation culture is an important step in our broader strategy to create a cleaner, more sustainable environment for future generations.” Reducing Energy Usage Across the City Throughout Mississauga, similar efforts are being implemented in each of the City’s buildings.
Cooling The Civic Centre has a state-of-the-art system that uses magnetic levitation technology in its compressors to increase the efficiency of a chilled water system in the building. Lighting Motion-control sensors have been installed throughout the Civic Centre to ensure lights are only turned on when required. During periods of inactivity, lights automatically turn off. Ventilation To improve energy efficiency, fans have been retrofitted with variable speed drives, delivering air according to the building’s occupancy and needs. Excess heat from the data room is directed to the parking garage in cooler weather. Outdoor Features Even outside the building, the City has taken steps to ensure energy isn’t wasted. The multi-purpose fountain, which doubles as a skating rink in winter, is equipped with technology to reduce energy consumption, while maintaining water resources. To ensure water isn’t wasted, it is treated and recirculated. A variable speed drive motor combined with wind sensor controls ensures that water passing through the fountain’s spouts isn’t turned into mist due to high winds.
An electronic dashboard on the City’s internal website gives City staff a snapshot of real-time and historic information on electricity, water and gas usage, along with numerous conservation tips.
“Our successes at the Civic Centre show us that working closely with operations and maintenance staff while engaging employees is a very successful method to significantly reduce energy consumption,” added Paraschiv. ”As we combine engagement with more efficient technology at buildings across the City, our conservation achievements will continue to increase.” Over the last five years, the City has reduced electricity consumption by 10,250,000 kWh. That’s enough electricity to power over 1,100 homes for an entire year. Natural gas and water consumption have both been reduced by 1.3 million cubic meters and 36,600 cubic meters respectively. That’s enough natural gas to heat 530 homes and provide water to 433 people for a year. For its commitment to energy conservation and environmental sustainability, Enersource applauds the City of Mississauga for being a “Conservation Hero.”
Leading by Example The energy efficiency at Mississauga’s Civic Centre has other cities taking notice. As an active participant in the nationwide Town

Do New York City Like a Local in 3 Days New York City is a never-ending collection of food, fun, and culture, not to mention its diverse people. Visitors who come to NYC want to see it all, but most will barely scratch the surface of what the city offers, which keeps them coming back. Tourist attractions are on everyone’s “must see” list, but there is a totally different side to the city; the one New Yorkers live and breathe everyday in a city they call home. From favorite restaurants to quaint neighborhoods to hidden treasures, all are at your disposal with 3 Days in NYC Like A Local. Top Tips • Stay out of Times Square, unless you’re going to the theatre. • Take the subway. It will save you time and money. • The best way to really explore NYC is on foot and you never know what surprises await you. • If there is a line, only wait in it if it seems to be locals. You'll be able to tell.
Where To Stay There are two brands we love that offer hotels in multiple neighborhoods and feel like you are walking into your home when you arrive. They are boutique-type hotels that offer excellent value. Affinia Hotel Collection has five hotels in NYC, each with its own personality and character related to its neighborhood. If you need a room with a kitchen, a bike, a picnic, or a bed for your pet, Affinia offers it all. Kimpton NYC offers three hotels, from chic to luxury to modern, each one offering special amenities. Choose from a Runner’s Amenity Kit complete with a pre-loaded iPod or all the technology you need, including an Instagram printer. The staff is like family; from the welcome “cheers” to wine hour. Where To Eat This is a tough one, because options are endless and depend upon where you want to venture. Here are some of our favourites.

by dana zucker A go-to restaurant is Kellari Tavern in midtown. The restaurant serves delicious Greek dishes with fresh, sustainable fish options and is as close to being in Greece as it gets. Chalk Point Kitchen in Soho is a local favorite among artists and anyone in search of a true farm-to-table meal. Handy Liquor Bar offers a warm welcome after a day hanging in the city. The Butcher’s Daughter has 3 locations and does not serve meat, but chops, fillets, and carves fruits and vegetables into magical meals. The menu changes daily based on available ingredients. Rosemary’s in the West Village is a very popular rustic Italian spot with its own rooftop farm. The only downside is they don’t take reservations and can get very busy. Red Farm NYC on the Upper West Side brings classic dim sum and farm-to-table dining together. The food is clean and market fresh yet has an authentic traditional feel and a wonderful presentation.

photo: The Manhattan NYC Affinia DAY 1 While you sip your morning coffee in the lobby, ask the front desk for a copy of Time Out or pick one up at the newsstand. Browse through what’s happening in town and choose some activities. We suggest gallery openings and sample sales and a day on the west side. Running from 34th Street to the Meatpacking District, you’ll find the High Line, an old train track converted into an urban oasis filled with gardens, food stalls, and public art. It is a must see and has fast become a local favourite, especially for its gorgeous sunsets. While you’re in the area, stop off at the Whitney Museum of American Art. The building itself is stunning. Then, hit Chelsea Market for the perfect dinner spot after a day of gallery hopping and shopping. DAY 2 Start your day where locals like to play tourist. Then, take the subway to Grand Central Terminal and enjoy the history and magic. Don’t forget to look up at the never-gets-old celestial ceiling. Take a short walk to The Plaza Hotel and stop at the Todd English Food Hall. Pick up a picnic lunch and head to Central Park. Spend
photos: Moms Good Eats time doing any of the seasonal activities or enjoy our favorite pastime, people watching. Wander deep into the park and discover some of its hidden treasures. Stop at the Metropolitan Museum’s Roof Garden Café and Martini Bar for free gorgeous skyline views, either for drinks or a light dinner. DAY 3 Take a stroll or bike ride across the Brooklyn Bridge for sweeping views of Manhattan and the East River. Your reward will be Brooklyn Bridge Park and its carousel, food trucks, and pop-up restaurants, or Brooklyn proper, where your choices for food and fun are endless. Be sure to visit DUMBO and enjoy the art installations, including “OY/YO.” Stop off at Scot Rossillo’s Original Rainbow Bagels before returning across the less-crowded Williamsburg Bridge, which connects the Lower East Side and Williamsburg and exhibits amazing graffiti art. Wrap up day 3 at a theatre. Think outside the box and your comfort zone when you look for tickets. TXTS offers wonderful on and off Broadway options, but the one in South Street Seaport usually has a much shorter line than Time Square. Armed with this 3-day itinerary, you can get a true slice of everyday life in New York City.

Ontario’s only spa offering the exclusive Aquapath™ treatment at by shane bage Offering a beautiful mix of sensory experiences in the Collingwood and Blue Mountain region, Living Water Resort’s Living Shore Spa fuses an enchanting natural backdrop with wellness and exquisite spa services. The state-of-the-art 5000 sq. ft. facility provides a unique Aquapath experience with multiple aqua-stations including mineral pools, waterfall benches, river pathways and sea salt baths. This signature rejuvenation treatment encourages active wellness and is perfect for singles or small groups. Hydrotherapy has been traditionally defined as a natural remedy that involves the use of water, such as water pressure and temperature for therapeutic purposes to stimulate circulation and assist the body in its natural healing process. Hydrotherapy is instrumental in stimulating the immune system, assisting in detoxification and promoting overall wellbeing. To help you fully picture what the Aquapath experience is, we’ve listed each of the available stations:
• RAIN HEAD SHOWER – You will end your session by rinsing off and returning to the waiting room. Living Shore Spa also provides more traditional spa treatments such as massages, manicures and pedicures. Relax and be pampered in one of six massage rooms or two couples’ massage rooms. Afterwards, enjoy the convenience of the nearby facilities including the Living Water pool and the waterfront restaurant.
• SWISS SHOWER – Multiple body jets and large rain head shower. • DETOXIFYING MINERAL BATH – A large detoxifying mineral hot tub with a series of jets that move from lower to mid back. This tub is designed to start the detoxifying process by pulling toxins from the skin as you move around the bench and hit the jets at different heights. • 4 STAGE WATERFALL BENCHES – You will sit on 4 separate benches as waterfalls rain over you in different patterns to hit different pressure points on the head and shoulders. • EUCALYPTUS STEAM SAUNA – Steam sauna with eucalyptus oil infused into the air. • GLACIER SHOWER – A waterfall of ice cold water that falls right over your head designed to promote circulation. • RIVER WALK (2) – 2 separate trenches (1 warm on the left and 1 cool on the right) that have pebbles on the bottom for the feet as you walk down the trench. Jets also progressively get higher up the leg as you walk through. This is designed for you to complete two times. • REPLENISHING MINERAL BATH – A large mineral tub with a jumbo rain shower head on one side. The bath is designed to replenish minerals into the body. You can choose to either relax in a hot tub sitting on a bench or stand under the refreshing rain. • EXFOLIATION TUB – A tub filled with a mix of sea salt and essential oils that is used to exfoliate the body leaving the skin silky smooth. 6 easy ways to prepare your car for winter by jay kana
As has happened every winter since the automobile was invented, December will officially welcome winter to Canada. As Game of Thrones’ House Stark proclaims, “winter is coming,” but they never mention how to prepare your vehicle. Modern Mississauga has you covered with six easy ways to keep safe and sound on the roads and highways this winter.
1. Install winter tires & winter wiper blades
There is indisputable evidence that winter tires offer better traction and safer stopping distances. Don’t believe the “all season tire” hype…it’s like putting running shoes on and trying to skate. Winter wiper blades are heavier and move ice/slush/snow more effectively than summer blades. Having clear forward visibility is paramount to the safe operation of about two tons of metal. Use winter washer fluid as well as it’s got a much lower freezing point than summer fluid.
18 Modern Mississauga | HOLIDAY 2016
2. Put an emergency kit in the trunk
Get an all-purpose storage container that takes up about 25% of your trunk space and fill it with extra winter washer fluid and winter wipers, road salt, a small shovel, a pair of winter boots and thick socks, a blanket, candles, waterproof matches, jumper cables, a jerry can, and road flares, which are all items that’ll help you if you’re stuck and waiting for the roadside assistance program you should be subscribed to.
3. The glove box is for more than gloves
Keep a few chocolate bars/chips/sesame seed bars in there and a couple of bottles of water that are 75% filled (so they don’t burst). Keep a portable cell phone charger in there too and set a reminder every two weeks to re-charge it so it’s useable when you’re stuck.
4. Keep your gas tank far away from E
Always keep your gas tank at least a quarter full. In the winter of 2014, it took me over four hours to drive from Port Credit to midtown on Hurontario because two buses and a tractor
trailer got stuck on the small hill at the GO Train underpass. Running out of gas as you’re stuck in a traffic jam is absolutely avoidable.
5. Have an extendable snow brush with an ice scraper unit
There are still selfish and lazy drivers who refuse to clean their entire car of snow before going on the road and blinding others with debris flying off their car. Got short arms and a tall vehicle? That’s where the extendable handle comes in. For the safety of all of us, take the extra two minutes and thoroughly clean the snow from your vehicle, especially the roof.
6. Give yourself extra time
A regular 20-minute drive in clear conditions will certainly take longer if there’s snow/ slush/black ice/rain, so instead of zipping through traffic (and risking a serious collision), leave a bit earlier. If you don’t feel comfortable driving, jump on the MiWay, call a cab, or simply stay home and do your outing at another time.

2017 HONDA
Civic Hatchback The folks at Honda have brought back the Civic Hatchback after nearly a decade, and for those who want functionality without having to move into the crossover/SUV/CUV world, this offering is right up your alley. They’ve created a premium hatchback for the compact market at a non-premium price point. It’s an excellent option for those who want the versatility of a crossover and those who want a spirited driving experience. After being absent in the marketplace for a decade and having the Mazda 3, Ford Focus, Mini Cooper, and others jockey for the top spot, the new Civic Hatchback is back to try and topple them all. And things look great out of the gate, seeing as the Civic has been Canada’s best-selling car for nearly 20 years in a row. For a company that wants to be the number one hatch globally, they’re certainly off to a great start. Modern Mississauga was invited to be a part of the official media launch that took place in beautiful Muskoka and with the autumn colours beckoning us, the nearly 200 km drive through the winding roads of cottage country - Southwood road specifically - was stunning. At first glance, the aggressive design lines stand out from its competitors, especially those grand boomerang rear lights. Some will say that there are too many sharp angles and won’t care for the two fake plastic air vents on the rear bumper. Honda is straying away from conventional and boring with the Civic lineup and to me, that’s a stellar way to stand out in a crowd. 16” wheels come standard and the higher trims lift you to 18” alloy wheels. As it should be, the only way you can really distinguish between the sedan and hatch is by looking at the rear. The highlights for me (and hopefully you) of the 2017 Civic are that all three trims (LX, Sport, and Sport Touring) are available with a manual gearbox (#savethemanuals!) and there’s but one strong and fuel efficient 1.5 litre Turbocharged four-cylinder engine. While there’s one engine, there are two power offerings. The LX sees 174 horsepower
20 Modern Mississauga | HOLIDAY 2016

and 167 lb-ft. of torque, while the Sport and Sport Touring get a slight bump to 180 horsepower and 177 lb-ft. of torque. Personally, I’d prefer the one engine be matched with the higher output as the only offering, seeing as there’s such a marginal increase. Spending time in both the manual and automatic transmission, both respond smartly to driver inputs. The automatic CVT option will definitely outsell the DIY method but I’m very happy there’s a smooth shifting manual option available. On the road, the car handles wonderfully, steering is precise, and the “fun to drive” factor rates high. As I navigated the twists and turns of Muskoka, the car responded well through both low and high speeds, with great ease and control. This type of performance, fun factor and handling will certainly give the perennial segment leader, the Mazda 3, a strong run for its money. For the ever important fuel economy on the city/highway/combined via L/100km scale, the CVT for the base model chimes in at 7.7 / 6.0 / 6.9 and 7.9 / 6.6 / 7.3 for the Sport and Sport Touring. On the manual side, all three trims register at slightly higher 8.0 / 6.2 / 7.2. Of course, real world driving conditions will see these figures fluctuate, but overall, the Hactchback is respectable in its class. Of note, the 46.9 L gas tank takes premium fuel for the Sport and Sport touring and regular for the base LX. On the road, the Civic Hatchback LX (the trim we were given for the media launch) handled extremely well, held the road firmly, and cornering was truly exciting. As we drove a combination of highway, city and rural routes, both the automatic and six-speed manual provided ample power when we needed it. Personally, we favoured the manual box as the shifts were smooth and accurate. Realistically, we know that about 75-80% of hatchbacks will come with the CVT transmission. Inside, the fit and finish, even in the base model, were impressive.
Honda goes {hatch}back to their roots
The design is modern, smooth and upscale with soft touch materials, and a large infotainment touch screen frames the interior quite nicely. Although we wish there was an actual volume knob on the console, the counter to that is that we ended up using the volume control button on the steering wheel. Speaking with Alen Sadeh in the PR department at Honda Canada, he explained that this is being positioned as a premium hatchback and it gives drivers the best of both worlds between fashion and function. There’s a new powertrain, a new platform and an exciting driving feel here. Road noise barely seeps in through the acoustically treated glass and the cloth seats have a great comfort level. Standard features included heated front seats, a backup camera, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Storage wise, Honda claims class leading space with measurements at 727.7 L with the rear seats up and 1308.2 L with the rear seats folded. With that kind of space, weekends away, camping trips, Swedish boxed furniture, sports practices, band rehearsals, and moving days are easily covered. There’s also a full suite of safety technology available on all trim levels via the “Honda Sensing” safety package. It includes adaptive cruise control with low-speed follow, collision mitigation braking, road departure mitigation, and forward collision warning. With the Mazda 3 being one of the popular choices in the compact hatch segment, Honda’s newest offering for the 10th generation Civic family is raring to go in an attempt to add to the already well awarded and established Civic lineup. The Civic is a powerhouse in the market as it’s the number one selling car in Canada to date, and now adding a very utilitarian offering to the existing sedan and coupe models, Honda’s aiming to further strengthen their place atop the Canadian market. Keep an eye out for further Civic family additions via the sporty Si model and the roaring Type R, coming most likely in 2017. Modern Mississauga | HOLIDAY 2016

In 2009, Dan Meadowcroft and Frank Bailey got together for coffee in Port Credit and talked about how to raise money in support of the local food bank, The Compass. Shortly after, Dan, Frank, Ellen Timms, Charles Sousa, Pat Anderson and a few others met at the lighthouse and came up with ‘Twas the Bite Before Christmas, a charitable, family-friendly dinner to raise money for the Mississauga Food Bank and The Compass. Charles took it a step further with an annual turkey drive for the Food Bank, and this year, there will be a breakfast in Port Credit for 150 families on December 4th in partnership with the Breakfast with Santa Foundation and the Lakeshore Corridor Community team. Now in its eighth year, ‘Twas the Bite heads north with a stop in Streetsville on November 23rd via a Ladies Night fundraiser for the Eden Food Bank at The Franklin House. The Oasis Convention Centre is the venue for the Port Credit stop on December 6th with Mike Bullard hosting the event. There’s also a food drive happening in December at various businesses in Port Credit. Last year’s hard work from the community helped raise $60,000, tons of food, and 500 turkeys for hungry families in our community and this year’s event is poised to contribute even more. The ultimate goal is to create something inclusive that would connect with the community`s natural impulse to give and the wonderful people of our city have continuously risen to the challenge. Fighting hunger, feeding hope and assisting those less fortunate are paramount for the team and a strong part of their motivation is that no child should ever have to go hungry. Modern Entrepreneur:
“And, when you want something, all the universe conspires in helping you to achieve it.” - Paulo Coelho in The Alchemist It’s these simple yet powerful words that our modern entrepreneur, Elvira Hopper, believes wholeheartedly. For those of you who watched the A-Team, Colonel John Smith’s catchphrase “I love it when a plan comes together” also works incredibly well. The balancing of risk and reward in an entrepreneurial life is constantly being carefully measured, calculated and then recalculated. And yes, there’s a pinch of luck sprinkled in the proverbial mixing bowl. In the case of Elvira Hopper, her road to launching her own business as a successful life coach was far from conventional. After putting in over 20 years of hard and dedicated work in the pharmaceutical field as a consistently top-end sales rep, winning awards and earning acclamations hand over fist, her professional life took an unfortunate turn that saw her suffer from deep depression and anxiety and be on the receiving end
28 Modern Mississauga | HOLIDAY 2016
of aggressive bullying. Further to that, Elvira experienced turmoil in her personal life as well. Her late father was bullied and used the help of prescription drugs to cope but Elvira saw the ill effects of that and strove to get through this hardship with sheer determination. Over a two-year period, she simply went through the motions of life, eternally carrying that “load of bricks in your stomach” feeling, until a moment of transformation happened. A former pharmaceutical colleague had taken a year off to become a life coach and when Elvira saw her for the first time since her sabbatical, there was an aura of pure happiness. Elvira said, “I immediately noticed that she was a totally different person. I saw her living her truth and thought one day I’m going to do that too!” She decided that it was time to release the “golden handcuffs” that had bound her to a job which she found no internal happiness in and left her feeling hollow and unfulfilled. She called it her “I’m better than this” moment. Reflecting on her tumultuous two years, Elvira says, “I spent two years in a dark place, I was bullied professionally and personally and at the end of it all, I realized that I was the common denominator. When I took the ‘kick me’ sign off my back, things quickly improved.” The ultimate move came after a sales appointment with her manager that went poorly. On the car ride back to the office, Elvira asked for a year’s sabbatical as she knew a change had to be made. She was granted four months and in an interesting twist, during the first few weeks off, the company restructured, packaged her out and she received a year’s salary, enough to comfortably start her journey towards becoming a life coach. The former Toronto Argonauts cheerleader saw this chain of events as a fresh start and realized that’s “what I was put on the planet to do”; to be a life coach. She absolutely believes that the universe said this was her time. And in true entrepreneurial fashion, she capitalized immediately. She spent a full year learning the craft of being a life coach and in 2011, set out on her journey to help people realize and exceed their potential. She proudly associates with being a “miracle mindset coach” and her mantra is to “love your vibe.” Elvira says “loving your vibe is a movement…when our purpose is bigger than us, people become engaged and support us. I’ve gone through pain and now I’m able to serve others by living my authentic life.” Slowly but surely, she built a name for herself, along with a client base of those who sought her help in taking their lives to the next level. When asked to summarize what she does, Elvira quickly and confidently responded, “I help others connect with their authenticity; I get to help transform people’s lives, and I support and encourage others who want to get more out of life and get to where they want to go and connect with their unique legacy.” This change has allowed for other positive changes in her life as well. She’s happier than she’s ever been and this entrepreneurial journey has opened other doors she’s otherwise perceived as locked. Once fearful of public speaking, she now speaks twice a month to various sized groups, including the Peel Children’s Aid Society, and believes that speaking to today’s youth is critical to empower them.
Elvira Hopper She became a jazz singer recently, which was a dream from her youth. Performing with her former piano teacher Darryl Joseph-Dennie under the banner “Heart & Soul” is something that Elvira cherishes. She truly feels at home on a stage with a microphone to her lips. In fact, the duo just did a live recording for their debut album this autumn. They’ve been at it for three years after a one-rehearsal performance on Breakfast Television went much better than expected. She sums it up perfectly, for those out there who fear their “time” has passed: “It’s never too late to live your dream.” She’s writing a book called “Change your vibe, change your life” which is dedicated to her bullies because without that unpleasant, two-year long experience, she wouldn’t have been able to take her life back. Her website is plastered with wonderful testimonials from past and current clients, with many new clients consistently coming on board. “Many times, my ego took over my life and I didn’t like who I became…but I always knew that life will unfold as it’s meant to be. I instantly knew that becoming a life coach was my path and I wouldn’t change a single thing along my journey. Always remember

that things happen for you, not to you, and have faith that the universe will point you in the right direction,” says Elvira. Being a successful entrepreneur requires a fair amount of insight and self-awareness along with a strong sense of humility, something that Elvira strongly exemplifies. She advises others to take their ego out of the equation and to have a clear vision of what you want and most importantly, to believe that it can be catapulted into reality. Looking forward, Elvira is looking to build upon her past five years with a tremendous 2017 and while we’ve promised to embargo what she’s got in the hopper, we can tell you that you should keep your eyes and ears on this bright, talented and driven Mississauga resident of over 25 years. She’s on the verge of some remarkable things that’ll make the hometown crowd very proud. Her parting words as we finished an intimate interview: “Money is certainly not everything: happiness is. Support everyone on their journey… there is nothing you cannot do.”

Anyone in the midst of acting as a primary caregiver for a senior parent will be all too familiar with the physical, mental, and emotional toll that those duties take. Stress, anxiety, depression, frustration, and exhaustion are only a few of the ailments that impact many caregivers. These pressures only mount for the “Sandwich Generation”: people caring for both senior parents and children of their own. When a caregiver’s wellbeing wanes, their ability to provide adequate care also suffers. If you feel physically, mentally, or emotionally overwhelmed, follow these tips for caregivers.
Recognizing StReSS
by jay kana
It’s impossible to get help if you don’t recognize your own stress. As a caregiver, monitor yourself for symptoms like persistent exhaustion, getting sick more frequently, difficulty sleeping, or having trouble enjoying pleasant activities. If you
notice yourself facing these issues, you may want to find support to alleviate the stress you feel.
SuppoRt netWoRkS
As a caregiver for both senior parents and young children, it is only natural to feel isolated, as though you are alone in supporting an entire family. Fortunately, there are support groups all across Canada that let you connect with empathetic people in similar situations, such as The Family Caregiver and The Caregiver Network.
Seek HeLp
No matter your efforts at self-care, acting as a caregiver can sometimes simply be too much, especially for the Sandwich Generation. A Personal Support Worker can provide professional care for your senior parent in their own home, affording you, the caregiver, much needed respite. In effect, Personal Support Workers provide both care for loved ones and caregivers.

Modern Startup 5 Resources for Entrepreneurs When starting your own business, the first step is having an idea that you believe in. But once you have that idea, there’s a lot of work involved in getting it off the ground. Often, entrepreneurs don’t think too much about the implementation details - the “plumbing” that’s required to turn your dreams into a viable business. What goes into naming a business? What does the management/ ownership structure look like? What accounting software should you use? How will you pay people, and how will you get paid? If all that sounds overwhelming, here are five tools to get you started on your journey from idea to execution. Wave Accounting You may be more familiar with a market-leading product like QuickBooks, but for many businesses just starting out, a behemoth like QuickBooks is massive overkill and an unnecessary expense. Wave is a true full-featured doubleentry accounting platform that lives in the cloud, and gives you all the features you would need from an accounting suite (direct bank data imports, invoicing, expense tracking, etc.) in a clean, easy-to-use package. Best of all, it’s completely free. The company is headquartered in Toronto, so by using this software, you’ll be supporting fellow Canadian entrepreneurs. PaymentEvolution Looking for a payroll solution? Look no further than PaymentEvolution, a simple cloud-based payroll service designed by and for Canadians (and based right here in Mississauga). Calculate source deductions, create payslips and tax forms, and even set up direct deposit for your employees. PaymentEvolution lets you use most of its features for free for up to 5 employees, and offers competitive pricing beyond that, which means they grow with your business and succeed when you do.

Square Square is the easiest way to start accepting credit card payments. They provide you with a free credit card reader that works with your mobile phone, and you pay a small transaction fee only when you use it, with no monthly fees or other commitments. In addition to accepting credit cards in person, can even use Square to send invoices that your customers can pay online. Shoeboxed Keeping track of receipts can be hard. Why not let an app take care of it for you? Shoeboxed lets you simply take a photo of your receipt and it automagically enters the date, total, payment type, and category for sorting. It’s completely free for basic functionality, with different pricing tiers offering advanced features like integration with accounting software and human-verified data extraction/categorization. Startup This one isn’t a piece of software or service, but a podcast that chronicles the nitty-gritty steps involved in starting and running a business. The first several episodes cover a wide cross-section of topics ranging from choosing a name for your business, pitching investors, negotiating partnership terms, understanding your customers and your product-market fit, and so much more, all told through the voice of an actual startup founder going on this entrepreneurial journey and experiencing all of the issues above.

The invitation was to build a “smart and caring nation” as Canada approaches its 150th birthday. This call to action marked a watershed moment and has galvanized a new way of thinking about the work of community foundations across the country. Our contribution to the Governor General’s call is now coming into focus: build Smart & Caring Communities.

Bargain Hunting O utlets vs . R etail
by bil kanawati
Shopping season is in full swing, and retailers are doing everything they can to compete for your dollar. Malls like Erin Mills Town Centre and Square One have completed multi-million dollar upscale renovations, while big-box destinations like Heartland and the Toronto Premium Outlets vie for attention among more bargain-conscious shoppers looking for brand name goods without the brand name price tags. Outlet shopping can be a great way to pick up a lot of items on a budget, but be aware those brands you’re buying may not be what you think they are. Long ago, when people used to make pilgrimages to the US for “outlet shopping” trips and return with enormous hauls of designer goods at unheard-of prices, the business model for outlets was that
34 Modern Mississauga | HOLIDAY 2016
they would carry overstock, clearance, and out-of-season items that needed to be moved out of regular retail stores to make room for new inventory. These days, that quaint practice is incredibly rare, with “factory” or outlet stores often running as entirely separate brands, with their own buying teams and inventory made specifically for outlets – inventory that was never intended for and has never seen the inside of an actual retail location. That dress shirt you bought at the J.Crew “factory” store? Everything from the fabric, stitching, fit, and finish might have more in common with something bought at Target than with apparel from an actual J. Crew retail store. From personal experience, I can tell you that I’ve bought similar dress shirts from both Banana Republic retail and Banana Republic
modern LIFEST Y LE
Factory stores, and the quality difference is real. Though they were both 100% cotton, after a year of regular wear the Factory shirt started fraying at the cuffs and looking a little worn and faded, while the regular retail shirt looked as good as the day that I bought it. The Factory shirt also had less detail throughout, noticeable stitching differences, and the fit wasn’t as flattering. Aside from simple quality differences, another problem with the outletexclusive approach is that pricing becomes much more difficult to judge. Are you really getting as good a deal as you think you are? Kate Spade and Michael Kors recently faced lawsuits in the US over heavilydiscounted items that allegedly were never intended to be sold for their “retail” or “list” price. So did T.J. Maxx, part of the same family of stores as Winners and Marshalls, which all use “compare at” pricing as opposed to “list” or “original price” tags. This “compare at” strategy was the subject of a CBC Marketplace investigation earlier this year, with Winners telling the CBC that this pricing nomenclature “…reflects our buyer's assessment of the regular, retail selling price of a comparable item in traditional department or specialty stores.” What Winners considers a “comparable item” is anyone’s guess, but it certainly makes figuring out whether you’re getting a real bargain less straightforward. So how do you spot the real deal from the made-for-outlet doppelgangers? Sometimes they’ll be part of an outlet-only line, like Lauren by Ralph Lauren. In other cases, outlet exclusives are designated by a series of symbols: J. Crew Factory clothing will have two diamonds on the label, while Banana Republic Factory labels will have three diamonds, and Gap Factory labels will have three squares.
Armed with all of this information, one question remains: does any of this really matter? If what you care about most is getting quality clothing that’s a great deal, you’re better off waiting for sales at retail than outlet shopping. That means braving the violent crowds on Black Friday or Boxing Day, signing up for retailer mailing lists to get periodic coupons, and patiently scouring clearance racks. However, if your priorities are less about bargainhunting and more about simply having clothes that are stylish, comfortable, and affordable, outlets are still a great choice - they offer a lot of wardrobe flexibility year-round (not just during sale periods), and they can be a great way of developing a variety of different outfits without breaking the bank.

winter is coming: 6 Tips to Prepare Your Home by marko furlani Winter is on its way! Just as you prepare your wardrobe for the season change, it’s also very important to prepare your home. It’s a good idea to spend some time in the late fall to go through your home and winterize your biggest asset. Failing to do so can result in expensive and aggravating repairs which may occur in the middle of the winter or reveal themselves in the spring when it’s too late. Here are some simple yet important items to look at before the deep freeze. 1) Check for drafts Small gaps or cracks around windows and doorframes may seem insignificant, but if left unattended, can run up your heating bill over time. It’s a good idea to go around the interior of all your door and window frames with a BBQ lighter (please use caution when using fire!) and look for the flame to flicker. If it does, you might have a leak. Applying caulking to these areas will eliminate the issue. 2) Divert exterior water Whether you have a rain barrel or a traditional downspout, these areas can become
dangerous from ice formations during the winter months. To eliminate this hazard, redirect the water away from walk ways, pathways and driveways. It’s also a good idea to apply salt or sand to these areas regularly. 3) Turn ceiling fans to reverse Most people ignore these money savers in the winter. Turning your ceiling fan to reverse (clockwise) will create an updraft which will pull the heated air up and circulate it throughout the room ( just like a convection oven). As a result, you are not wasting energy heating the air above you and the ceilings. 4) Clean your gutters Gutters can result in a huge headache in the middle of winter, with the bunched up wet leaves left over from the fall freeze causing a blockage. When the weather warms up and the ice from your roof melts, the blockage prevents the water from draining efficiently. If climbing a ladder to clean your gutters isn’t your idea of a fun Saturday afternoon, there are plenty of professionals that you can call.
5) Shut off exterior water Water expands when it freezes and can cause a lot of damage if left in your exterior water supplies. By code, all exterior supplies have a shut-off valve inside the home and a drain valve. It is very important to shut off and drain the lines before the winter freeze. Failing to do so can result in significant water damage which may be undetected for a long period of time. The same goes for garden hoses and irrigation systems. 6) Change your furnace filter You should change your furnace filter at the start of every season; the winter is no exception. These are the lungs of your house and should be kept in top form. Blocked filters will cause your HVAC system to work overtime to provide the heat your home will demand. While you’re at it, check your humidifier filter to ensure that it’s not blocked and in good condition. It is a good idea to run your humidifier throughout the winter to counteract the dry air produced by your furnace. Marko Furlani is the owner and President of Urbanest Construction.

confessions of a
mall santa by john murray lewis Ho ho ho! Season's Greetings! It's the most wonderful time of the year again. The air is crisp and full of cheerful song, redolent with the sweet smell of fruitcake and honeyed ham; and we, the mall Santas of the world, have emerged from our eleven-month hibernation to reclaim our plush, tinsel-trimmed thrones. And just as in those merry days of yore, there will be one question on everybody's mind. So, to clear it up once and for all: Yes, I am the real Santa Claus of a parallel timeline where Donald Trump becomes President and the universe self-annihilates. There, there! Don't worry. Nothing like that could happen in this timeline! This apocalyptic burden is ours to bear -- we, the mall Santas of Planet Earth, all of us refugees from distant worlds strung out like lights upon the sparkling Christmas tree of life. With a whimpering pop the bulbs go out, billions of lives extinguished in an instant by a reality collapsing upon itself in madness and despair. What's that you want for Christmas? An "ex-box? Is that some kind of... former box? I'm sorry, my universe didn't survive long enough to develop that kind of technology! Not that I'm complaining, no ho ho! Mississauga, with approximately six malls per capita, is the ideal place to ply my eternal trade. Every winter, without respite or surcease, countless children sit on my knee, beam up at me, eyes watery with wonder or abject terror. What a joy to listen to their innocent gibberish as I sweat under fluorescent lights and watch a teenager dressed in a culturally-insensitive elf costume sell some distracted parent a CD with three JPEGs on it for $45. The sticky sweetness of candy canes, the warm aroma of gingerbread houses, Perry Como cycled endlessly through tinny ceiling-mounted speakers, the horror of a cold, unfeeling fate... I will never forget the look of grim resolution on the elves' faces, the winnowing cries of my reindeer team, as with a single wheezing, sniffling "bigly" the end arrived, the North Pole imploded and I was siphoned outwards by a magical trans-dimensional portal born of my own incomprehensible mystic energy. Oh, you're still going on about that ex-box? What about marbles? Do you like marbles? If there's one thing we mall Santas want you to know, it's that we're so much more than a beard as soft as lambswool and an enchanting disposition. Think about that, the next time you drop off your howling devil-spawn Craig on some poor old man's lap. Maybe take a moment to ask what Santa wants for Christmas this year? I can assure you, it won't be much: merely to once again feel the nurturing embrace of the world he once knew. To return to his manor above the world, to polish his tinkling sleigh bells, to ponder over his list of the naughty and the nice. To go ho... ho... home. Well, look at that! It's just about time to return to the painless cryosleep of my habitation pod beneath the mall. See you next year! You'll let me know how Hillary's inauguration goes, right? ...Right?

Wine Workout 9 Minute by alicia jones |

It’s time to celebrate the season. Head to the liquor store, pick up two bottles of wine and let’s get fit! This sounds counterintuitive to the usual healthy living and weight loss advice that tells us to eliminate food groups and cut out alcohol, but truthfully the only way to lose weight and sustain it is by throwing out restrictive plans and setting ourselves up for success. Healthy living can include wine. By embracing our decision to drink in moderation, we create a mindset free from restrictions and guilt. While this is the best time of year to enjoy yourself, wine does pack on the calories, so it’s important to burn a few to balance your intake. On average, one 5-ounce glass of wine has approximately 150 calories. If you drink one bottle (approximately 4 glasses of wine) then you’re drinking 600 extra calories. Use your pre-wine moments to burn the extra calories. The wine you’re about to enjoy can be your equipment. Using weights, such as wine bottles, enhances EPOC (excess post oxygen consumption), a mechanism that helps rev up your metabolism for up to 72 hours after your workout. That’s a lot of calorie burn for only a few minutes of effort. Do these three simple exercises one right after the other with two bottles of wine. Repeat 3 times. Then enjoy the festive season without the extra pounds!
Weighted squats:
Stand tall, feet hip width apart and wine bottles held between legs. Inhale as you sit, send hips back, abs tight and wine bottles reach for the ground. Keep chest and shoulders upright. Then exhale as you push with your heels and stand. Do 20 repetitions.
Bottle Back Flys:
Stand hip width apart (for bad backs, place one leg in front of the other), wine bottle in each hand. Tip from the hips keeping a straight line from the top of your head to your tailbone. Arms reach for the floor and bottles touching. Squeeze your shoulder blades together as you extend your arms out to each side (like a bird spreading its wings), then return to start position. Do 20 repetitions.
Kickbacks:
Hold a bottle of wine in each hand, stagger your legs one in front of the other then tip from the hips. Bend your elbows, palms face in and bottles equal to chest. Keep palms facing in as you straighten your arms behind you. Then bend your elbows and return to start position. Do 20 repetitions.
top wine choices linked to better health: • RED WINE - Compounds known as polyphenols are linked to a reduction in heart disease and may reduce your risk of certain cancers.
• Pinot Noir - Contains the highest concentrations of Resveratrol, a type of polyphenol known for its powerful antioxidant properties.
• Cabernets - High in procyanidins, an antioxidant linked to heart health. • WHITE WINE - White wine wins over red wine when it comes to powerful antioxidants linked to weight loss and to better sleep (an essential necessity to maintain a healthy weight).
• Chardonnay - Polyphenols found in this wine help absorb powerful antioxidants linked to improved bone density. • Pinot Grigio - Helps reduce inflammation in the body due 40 Modern Mississauga | HOLIDAY 2016

Roasted turkey Ingredients
• 1 12-20-pound fresh turkey or thawed from frozen • 2 teaspoons salt • 1 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper • 1 recipe herb butter • 1 recipe of herb & leek stuffing (or your favourite stuffing recipe) • 1 cup water or white wine • 3 cups giblet stock or prepared chicken stock Directions
1. Remove giblets from turkey cavity (use to make broth, if desired). 2. Rinse turkey with cool water, and pat dry with paper towels. 3. Using your fingers, gently loosen turkey skin from over the breast meat, and spread half the butter mixture under skin. 4. Preheat oven to 450 degrees, with rack on lowest level. Place turkey, breast side up, on a rack in a roasting pan. *TIP* Don’t have a roasting rack? Simply place some stalks of celery and sliced
carrots under the turkey to elevate it off the bottom of the roasting pan. 5. Place prepared stuffing into neck cavity, fold skin over and hold in place with small metal skewers or toothpicks. 6. Then add stuffing into turkey cavity, ensuring you do not over stuff or pack too tightly. 7. Tie legs together with kitchen twine. 8. Rub entire turkey with remaining herb butter, and sprinkle with remaining 1 teaspoon salt and 1/2 teaspoon pepper. 9. Cook turkey for 30 minutes at 450 degrees, rotating the pan halfway through. Using a pastry brush or turkey baster, baste the turkey with any pan drippings. 10. Reduce oven temperature to 350 degrees, and continue cooking 2 more hours, basting turkey and rotating pan every 30 minutes. *TIP* if the wing tips or turkey skin browns quickly, loosely cover with tin foil 11. After 2 1/2 hours of cooking, insert an instant-read thermometer into the thickest part of the thigh, avoiding the bone. The temperature should reach 160 degrees, and the turkey should be golden brown (the internal temperature will continue to rise once turkey is out of oven - ideal done temperature is 165 degrees). If thighs are not yet fully cooked, baste turkey again, and continue cooking. 12. When fully cooked, transfer turkey to a large cutting board, and let rest, about 30 minutes. 13. While the turkey is resting, make the gravy. Pour the pan juices into a large glass measuring cup and let stand until fat separates to the surface, about 10 minutes, then skim off with a large spoon. 14. Meanwhile, place roasting pan on stovetop over medium-high heat. Add wine or water, and bring to a boil; deglaze pan by scraping up any browned bits from bottom with a wooden spoon. Add stock and stir well, and return to a boil. 15. Cook until reduced by half, about 5 minutes. Add the skimmed pan juices, and cook 5 minutes more; you will have about 2 cups. Remove from heat, and season with the salt and pepper. Strain into a gravy boat, and serve with turkey. *TIP* A stuffed turkey takes approximately 20 minutes per pound to cook.

HERB & LEEK Stuffing by marissa corrigan 10 Servings | Prep Time: 20 Minutes Nothing compliments a holiday dinner table better than a bowl of delicious stuffing. This recipe is a family favourite for both Christmas and Thanksgiving and everyone fights over seconds! Ingredients
• 6 tablespoons unsalted butter • 2 medium yellow onions, diced • 4 stalks of celery, diced • 3 cloves of garlic, finely chopped • 2 leeks, thinly sliced (light green and white part only) • 10 cups of bread, cut into cubes • 4-5 sprigs of fresh thyme, chopped • 1/2 cup of flat leaf parsley, chopped • 2 teaspoons poultry seasoning • Salt and pepper, to taste Directions
1. In a large pot, melt butter over medium heat.
2. Add onions, celery, leeks, and garlic, and sauté for 5-7 minutes or until onions are translucent. 3. Add poultry seasoning, chopped fresh thyme, chopped flat leaf parsley, salt and pepper. 4. Add bread to pot, mix well to combine and coat evenly with butter, herbs and vegetables. 5. Set aside to cool before stuffing into turkey. *TIP* Can’t fit all the stuffing into your turkey? Place any leftover stuffing into an oven-safe baking dish greased lightly with butter and bake in the oven alongside your turkey for one hour and thirty minutes. When your turkey and stuffing are ready, remove stuffing with a large spoon and mix into the extra stuffing for maximum flavour. *TIME SAVING TIP* Prepare the stuffing recipe the night before you want to use it. Once cooled, transfer to a glass container with a lid and store in the fridge. Do NOT stuff the turkey or any other poultry until immediately before you are going to cook it.

Modern Dining Marco Polo Restobar
In the heart of Clarkson is where you’ll find one of our city’s hottest restaurants: Marco Polo Restobar. The team has created a trendy atmosphere that blends North American gastropub fare with a Mediterranean twist along with exciting entertainment to create a memorable experience. Known for their mouthwatering sharable plates, stellar service and creative drink menu, Marco Polo’s dedicated family offers unparalleled dining, whether it’s your first of fiftieth visit.
Signature food items While there’s an appetite for the entire menu, popular menu offerings include cooked-for-eight-hours short ribs, Tapas oriented chorizo corn dog, and their fried chicken sandwich, cutely named the “Mother Clucker.” Oh, and the “buck-a-shuck” oysters are a daily favourite. Signature drink Dorian Paul, the bar chef, has come up with an homage to Drake’s Degrassi days via the “Wheelchair Jimmy.” All their eight tap beers are craft beers and they have their own craft brew out of Stouffville. They even grow their own bitters in-house! Three word description Great food, vibes, and entertainment. (Fine, we gave them five words) Seating capacity 96 inside, 65 on the patio. Type of food North American gastropub food with a Mediterranean twist and a worldly flavour. Chef’s bio Simon Rae, a young and ambitious chef, had worked with owner Kyle Olivera previously

at Piazza Bistro in Oakville as the head Sous Chef for over two years, and when the opportunity arose to reunite, it was a perfect fit for them. Learning his craft at George Brown College, Rae’s been cooking for the past 12 years and has a Scottish and Italian culinary background. He’s got plenty of freedom in the kitchen, so much so that he’s encouraged to create nearly any type of dish at least once. Their constantly filled dining room is a testament to just how talented Chef Simon is. What can customers expect? Delicious food that’s created carefully and creatively, top notch customer service (even Kyle’s parents help out because they want to, not because they have to), and a welcoming atmosphere. Their live entertainment side is quickly gaining popularity, primarily due to the musicians’ positive interactions with the audience.
is a “special.” The team will try anything new menu-wise at least once to give it a chance. Owner Kyle Olivera supports his kitchen team and gives them freedom to be creative. The live music aspect is definitely an ongoing event, made popular by the entertainers interacting with the patrons. Name origin Marco Polo, the Venetian merchant traveler, was the inspiration for naming the restaurant. Kyle didn’t want to pigeon-hole his restaurant with a single type of food, so he wanted to create something that captured a wide array of food offerings, similar to Marco Polo’s vast travels. Seeing as food brings everyone together, the Marco Polo name fit perfectly and is especially illustrated in their “shareable” plates, along with their other menu items.
Price range Mid-range price for high quality food.
Type of clientele If you’re hungry, Marco Polo has a seat for you. Yes, there are a healthy number of young professionals coming through the doors, but the restaurant is welcoming towards any and every one who wants delicious food and an inviting, entertaining atmosphere.
