MODERN ARTIST: Wali Shah
M IS S I S S AUGA’S NE W P OET LAUR EAT E by jay kana Wali Shah recalls the moment he was given the news that he was selected to be Mississauga’s new Poet Laureate: “Casey Oliveira from Culture called me while I was at Pearson on the way to Saskatchewan for a speaking tour waiting to board my flight with about 40 people around me and when she told me I was selected as the 2017 Poet Laureate, I was like “WHAT?!?! NO WAY!?!” I had a genuine shock moment with all these people staring at me like I’d just won the lottery.” While this is another impressive credential on an already stellar resume, this achievement holds extra value for him. On the nomination process, he says: “My buddy Jim Tovey from Ward 1, he’s such a gem and saw me at the start of my career...he was always supportive and when the nomination came out, he said I’m nominating you.” There was a slight moment of hesitation as he felt his body of work wasn’t as wide as the previous Poet Laureate, Anna Yin, but he quickly realized and acted on the “nothing ventured, nothing gained” mentality. With this exciting opportunity ahead of him, Wali wants to connect with Mississauga’s talented Youth Poet Laureate,
8
MODERN MISSISSAUGA | EARLY SUMMER 2017
Rebecca Zseder and see what they can do together to inspire and support others in the community. “I want to help the next generation of Mississauga talent because there’s so much talent here. I want to help the kids that like writing and want to do something with their talents. If I can be a mentor to them if I can open up a door or organize events for them that’s what I want to do. I want to partner with other organizations that are using writing as a tool to make a difference, like ink movement… Doing things for the community is so important to me.” Wali choses to lead by example and hopes to inspire others to do anything they want to; “I’m so proud of Mississauga. I’ve lived in the 5 and 10 pocket nearly my entire life and it’s exciting to show others that a young guy from ‘Sauga can make it.” I asked what his advice was for aspiring writers struggling to take their first proverbial step and Wali aptly replied with: “It’s the first push. It’s the first barrier you have to break through to start that will take you to bigger and greater things. For me, when I broke that barrier was when I was 16 in Mrs. Riley’s English class while we were doing poetry readings. I went up
and every step felt like a mountain as I was walking to the front of that classroom to share my first poem. It’s hard… but you never know until you apply yourself. Just show up, just do it, make an effort, try because you never know where that effort will take you.” He’ll be reading his Canada Day 150 poem aloud on July 1st at Celebration Square and he sees it as a tremendous honour and is quite excited to share it with our community. It’s been an exciting path that’s led Wali from the steps of Mrs. Riley’s classroom to commanding the attention of over 15,000 people at the Air Canada Centre and this summer, onto the Celebration Square stage. Yes, it’s admirable that his list of achievements is lengthy given his age. However, it’s his love of the community, wanting to give back and inspire others that’s most impressive. With widespread support from family, friends and colleagues, paired with creativity, class and drive, Wali Shah, the “kid from 5 & 10” is proof that anyone can do anything. Keep up with him on social media via @walifloshah

Give Bright Students Concepts they can “Sink their Teeth Into” by kimberley langen, CEO & co-founder, Spirit of Math
Schools
Has your child come home from school with math homework involving memorizing steps and repeating them ad nauseam without really understanding what is going on? Even worse: do you have a bright child who has been turned off math because they are bored with the procedures, and find it meaningless? Math programs with a primary focus on procedures not only turns people off mathematics, but also develops people who learn how to follow without questioning. On the other hand, a strong math program, such as Spirit of Math, that focuses on a solid understanding will produce creative, critical thinkers who are excited to learn more. Finding a program with good core material is tough, but essential. These pointers will help you evaluate the core of a math program and determine if it will meet the needs of your highperforming child.
1. The program offers questions significantly different than the regular textbook type of questions. 2. The core material goes deeper and broader in each topic. 3. The program has been developed with the intent to first establish very strong numeracy skills. 4. The program was developed over many years, in the classroom with students. There are so many math programs out there, and many more people who think they can teach math because they know “the steps”. It takes a very discerning parent to look deeper into the program and to make sure that it is, in fact, going to teach their child how to think mathematically, and not just how to do the next question. A person who can think mathematically is able to logically put ideas together and that is a skill that can be applied to every area of life. Kimberley Langen is the CEO and Co-Founder of Spirit of Math® Schools. For more information about Spirit of Math, and to find a campus near to you, go to www.spiritofmath.com.

The Art Gallery of Mississauga Unveils
THREE MAJOR SUMMER EXHIBITIONS
On May 4th the Art Gallery of Mississauga unveiled three exciting summer exhibitions that explore notions of family, loss, identity and protest through the mediums of photography, sculpture and installation. Be sure to plan a visit to the AGM soon!
Family Camera: Missing Chapters
One Exhibition. Two Locations. Art Gallery of Mississauga: May 4 - August 27, 2017 Royal Ontario Museum: May 6 - October 29, 2017 Tour and Talk with Guest Curator Deepali Dewan: Sunday June 17, 1 PM Discover the connections between family, photography, and migration with The Family Camera, organized by The Royal Ontario Museum (ROM) and co-presented with the Art Gallery of Mississauga. This exhibition explores how family photos shape our sense of self, family, community, and nation. Exclusively at AGM, Missing Chapters considers family photos that are lost, destroyed, abandoned or never taken, featuring an installation by acclaimed international artist Dinh Q. Lê. Despite the seeming universality of family photographs, some families have had to destroy or abandon their photographs due to sudden dislocation or political persecution. Photos can be lost
through natural disasters or technological glitches. Even state policies can interfere with taking family photographs, by keeping families apart or trying to enforce what makes a family. This exhibition considers family photography through the lens of migration. From departures and arrivals to everyday moments and milestones, family photographs depict our journeys and make us feel connected. Even family photos that are lost linger in our imaginations.
Annie MacDonell: The Levellers May 4 - June 18, 2017
The Levellers extends Annie MacDonell's ongoing research and exploration of acts of political resistance, with a focus on gestures of refusal/withdrawal and instances in which the body is used as a site of political action. To level is to make even, to redress an imbalance. MacDonell is interested in the ambiguous implications of some of the interactions that play out in these scenes of civil protest, such as when protestors let their bodies go limp when physically apprehended by authorities, creating the appearance of a strange intimacy between resistor and state. The images of these encounters are powerful, and yet bizarre, prompting the question – who yields, and who is unyielding? The show combines
recent video work, with new collage and sculptural works produced specifically for the Art Gallery of Mississauga show.
Vivek Shraya: Trisha May 4 - June 18, 2017
Trisha is a photo essay from Toronto-based multidisciplinary artist, musician and writer Vivek Shraya. Shraya recreates scenes from vintage photographs of her mother as a way of both asserting connection and discovering difference between their experiences of femininity. In the text that accompanies the photo series, Shraya speaks of the experience, while growing up, of aspiring to be like her mother, and the shock of encountering, though these photographs, her mother was previously, and at once, not only her mother, but a woman in her own right, with a history and identity that went beyond what Shraya had known growing up. Shraya positions the camera - and the viewer - as a conduit for connection across time, across generations. Together, these two interconnected series of photographs, craft a nuanced portrait of a mother-daughter relationship that contains the multitudes of both women, and the forgotten, unrealized or as yet undiscovered aspects of ourselves that haunt us all.

6 tips for an enjoyable road trip by diane lahay
A well planned road trip is a wonderful experience, whether with family, friends or on your own. Here are a few tips to help you maximize your journey. VISIBILITY IS CRUCIAL Replace older wiper blades and top up your washer fluid before setting out. Knowing what's around you is crucial so safely set your mirrors and ensure that sight lines are clear. Keep your sunglasses easily accessible to combat our friend the sun. GET A TUNE UP Cars, like musical instruments, need to be tuned. Check your fluid levels, lights and tire pressure and get an oil change before leaving or have your mechanic do it. Look into a roadside assistance plan, just in case. CHANNEL YOUR INNER SCOUT & BE PREPARED This is especially important if travelling alone. Bring a regular charger and have a back-up portable power supply. Letting
the kids play with your phone can be tempting if they're getting restless but try not to let them run the battery too low. Road closures and construction can be an issue so having an up to date GPS is a smart choice if you’re alone or directionally challenged. There’s also the old school paper map route for the traditionalists. FUEL YOUR BODY Finding a balance between drinking enough water/coffee/etc and making too many “pit stops” can be tricky. Drink as much as you typically do as saving yourself an extra stop or two isn't worth feeling dehydrated. Go easy on the coffee as you’ll be extra wired when you reach your destination. Pack your favourite meal replacement bars and some fruit so you can skip the greasy drive-through. Bananas are an excellent choice as they're not messy and full of potassium, which keeps your energy level elevated. COMPARABLE COMPANY It's easy to compromise on music selection and climate control; deciding
when and where to stop is a little more complicated as everyone has a different “car tolerance.” Mine is significantly higher than my husband’s. When I told him I was writing this article he said I should include “Make your husband fly”. I do love him, however I prefer driving alone on five hours or more drives. When we do the 3,500 km round trip to and from Nova Scotia, we discuss the thought of an overnight stop before even getting in the car. RELAX & ENJOY A road trip is all about the journey! Some enjoy the in-car time and others look for a place to happen, making stops along the way. Definitely stop/pull over safely if you see something interesting. A previous regret is driving past the Corner Gas set in Saskatchewan and not stopping for a picture. Also, road side tourist information centres are a great resource. However, we all have a limit to how long we can stay out. Don’t push yourself if you’re tired; be smart and pull over or take a break. What good is the journey if you never reach your destination?

PRINCE EDWARD Prince Edward Island is one of those magical places that everyone needs to visit. Comprised of the main island and a few smaller islands, you will uncover a wealth of beauty, culture, aquaculture, and history. Known as the “Garden of the Gulf ” for the beauty of its lush agriculture, Prince Edward Island (PEI) is also referred to as the “Cradle of Confederation” from the Charlottetown Conference in 1864. Fun facts about PEI…It produces 25% of Canada’s potatoes and grows nearly 50 MILLION pounds of PEI mussels a year; 80% of Canada’s mussel production. It is also the home of Ann of Green Gables and why millions have visited the Island and discovered its magic. But, there is so much more…
GETTING THERE
Getting to Prince Edward Island is both easy
14 MODERN MISSISSAUGA | EARLY SUMMER 2017
and fun by air, over the bridge by car, or by ferry. WestJet and Air Canada fly direct to Charlottetown, the capitol; a short 2 hours from Toronto. Once on the Island, getting around is a snap, but we highly suggest renting a car.
WHERE TO STAY
Prince Edward Island has accommodations for everyone and every budget. For those who like to stay in the “city” with many options, we suggest Charlottetown and venturing out from there. A charming choice in a mansion is the Dundee Arms or a more traditional choice on the river walk is the Delta Prince Edward. For those who like more adventure, we suggest booking a few nights in cottages around the island, where you’re always
close to the water. Or if you’re looking to experience the true flavor for the Island, rent a home for a week from Airbnb on Howe Bay and really experience the PEI lifestyle.
EXPLORING PEI
PEI is divided into four sections; Points East Coastal Drive, Green Gables Shore, North Cape Coastal Drive, and Red Sands Shore and you’ll want to visit them all. We suggest starting out in Souris, a laid back area where you can enjoy beautiful beaches, tidal waters, and watch eagles and seals play all day. From there, head to Green Gables Shore in Cavendish, which will always impress. Spend a couple of days exploring not just the land of Ann of Green Gables, but hiking PEI National Park and its amazing red sandstone cliffs.
ISLAND Leaving Cavendish, head north to North Cape Coastal Drive where you can sleep in the lighthouse and explore the potato museum and famous house made of glass bottles. Finally, end your stay in Red Sand Shore, with its red sand beaches. It’s the perfect place to camp on the island among the rolling hills before you head back to Charlottetown and your return home.
WHERE TO EAT
There is no shortage of wonderful local food on PEI. You never need to drive far to get farm fresh ingredients or seafood and there is no shortage of amazing chefs. When in Souris, a trip to The Lobster Shack is a must for lobster rolls and oysters on the half shell. You can sit outside and watch the tide roll in and out and eagles fly overhead.
by dana zucker
| photos courtesy of Tourism PEI
If you head into Cavendish, a fish charcuterie is a must at The Blue Mussel Cafe. But, if you’re in a rental home, having a traditional clambake will not disappoint.
WHAT NOT TO MISS
You can do it all or do nothing on Prince Edward Island and we have done both, but there are some activities that are not to be missed: 1. A clam dig and dinner - Book a tour with one of the locals to get your technique down and make sure you get the full meal. 2. Greenwich Dunes National Park - From the dunes to the floating boardwalk, you will want to leave at least a half day to explore. 3. Kayaking the tidal waters - We suggest taking a trip from Victoria-By-The-Sea
with bytheseakayaking.ca. If you are renting a home on tidal waters, make sure it has kayaks. With the tides going in and out, the islands appearing and disappearing are magical. 4. Biking - Rent a bike and just ride. It can be inland or on the coast, because no view will disappoint. 5. Green Gables tour – Plan a half day to enjoy the tour and all the other sites. 6. Let’s Get Lost – We highly recommend just driving and having nothing planned, so you set yourself up to stumble upon the incredible scenery. Be sure to use tourismpei.com to help plan your visit. We know you’ll have an amazing trip!

HONDA CR-V Honda’s fifth generation CR-V compact SUV makes its debut in the form of the 2017 model. I spent a few days in vibrant Victoria, British Columbia test driving it and here are my takeaways from what’s sure to be a hot seller:
FROM BLAND TO GRAND For the new 2017, fifth generation offering, they’ve taken design cues from the Acura luxury division and it has now got a premium look and feel. It’s taller, longer and wider than the outgoing model. The fenders look stronger, the design lines are elegant and there’s definitely an athletic appearance that previous models were lacking. The rear lights now include both horizontal and vertical flowing lines and the standard LED lights offer a classy touch that’s reminiscent of the luxurious Volvo V90. The interior takes a huge leap forward with a modern design, premium feel and offering plenty of space both up front and in the rear seats.

ONE ENGINE TO RULE THEM ALL The 2017 CR-V will feature its first ever turbocharged engine via a 1.5-liter DOHC, direct-injected and turbocharged in-line 4-cylinder rated at 190 horsepower and 179 lb-ft. of torque. After racking up a couple hundred clicks through the winding roads of Victoria, this new engine is capable, responsive and just what the CR-V needs to push its way to the top. Even in Eco mode, the engine managed to handle the various inclines handily, even if there was a bit of higher revving at times. Fuel economy for the AWD model rates at 8.7 city and 7.2 highway for L/100 km. HEY, KEEP IT DOWN BACK THERE! Proving their attention to detail, the 2017 CR-V now has fold-flat rear seats so you can fit more Swedish flat-packed furniture, suitcases, guitar amps (well, for me) and plenty of other items in the trunk.
Cleverly, there’s a two level trunk height so you can fit four full sized suitcases with the rear seats up. Cargo space is very competitive and registers at 39.2 cubic feet of cargo space with the rear seats up, or 75.8 with the second row folded. Another big change for this model is the Hands Free Power Tailgate, which is that “make a kicking motion beneath the car” technology that saves you from being an amateur juggler. IT’S WHAT’S INSIDE THAT COUNTS The new interior is far more airy and spacious and smartly, Honda has made the cabin of the CR-V inviting and comfortable. Starting with the two rear seat USB ports, best in class interior space, rear seat leg room and very comfortable seats, the 2017 CR-V’s improved interior will turn heads for sure. The centre console boasts an available seven-inch touchscreen that’s responsive and quite easy to navigate. Honda’s going for a premium look and feel with this vehicle and they’ve certainly achieved that on the interior. The all-digital dashboard is simple to read and understand, steering wheel controls include that wonderful “push or slide” volume control technology and the seats are impressively comfortable. Simply put, the new CR-V’s interior is smart, simple and stylish. EVERYBODY WANTS TO RULE THE WORLD And Honda is no exception. They’re currently holding bragging rights for the following verticals: • Compact car – Civic • Midsize car – Accord • Subcompact SUV – HR-V • Premium Minivan – Odyssey
So it’s no surprise that they want to dethrone Toyota’s RAV4 for top spot in the compact SUV market in 2017. Given what they’ve done to boost the value and looks for the CR-V, they’re on the right track. With the same four model trims (LX, EX EX-L, Touring) the price range moves from the mid-$20K’s to a steak dinner for two at the Keg over $37K, plus whatever you tick off on the option sheet. There’s more value out of the box in the 2017 line up than the 2016 one and as such, prices have marginally increased on all four trims, with the largest lift being $1,000 on the top two models. Honda counters this by saying that there’s more than $3,500 of average net value added across the lineup. With Apple CarPlay/Android Auto, front wiper de-icer, LED lights, the smart Honda Sensing safety technology standard on all AllWheel-Drive options (almost all in the CR-V lineup) and remote start as standard equipment, the CR-V shows off plenty of value-for-money. They’ve even stepped it up with available heated rear seats and steering wheel, along with a massive panoramic sunroof to help draw potential buyers. Honda has stepped up its game tremendously with the new CR-V and have positioned it as a high value for a mid-sized price compact SUV. They score full marks from me on the new exterior, terrific fuel economy and a redesigned interior. If all goes according to plan, Honda will have prospective buyers not needing to hit the “T” portion of the alphabet in their compact automotive needs.

With 150 indoor concerts, 14 themed series presented in 11 concert venues, the Festival International de Jazz de Montréal once again proves it is the musical rendezvous of the summer! The 38th edition of the Festival, presented by TD Bank Group in collaboration with Rio Tinto reveals how wonderfully the Festival wears its years, never ceasing to renew, innovate, enrich, diversify and deepen its offering… And so the curtain rises on a program brimming with jazz, of course, but also blues, folk, rock, pop, electronica and world music, in addition to displaying a new website and new colours thanks to its collaboration with the teams of Bleublancrouge and Baillat for the graphic design of this edition. It’s a high-calibre
program, combining the most dazzling stars on today’s scene, artists at the zenith of their art, and streaking young comets to be discovered! But this is also an edition overflowing with styles and cultures, with over 17 countries represented, from Norway to Brazil, Armenia to New Zealand, including the UK, Cuba, Mali, Nigeria, Japan, South Korea, Argentina and, of course, Canada, from B.C. to Nunavut! MODERN ENTREPRENEUR:
Kathy Buchworth by jay kana
| photo courtesy of CL buchanan photography
How did one Mississauga woman change her life course from a corporate banker to a media mogul? The answers from Kathy Buckworth are all here. After spending nearly two decades in corporate marketing and the arrival of her fourth child, Mississauga’s Kathy Buckworth realized that something had to change. She and her husband both travelled often for work and with four darling children on the scene, she decided to take a break from her corporate life and since then, it’s been an exciting journey into the entrepreneurial world. She’s a six-time author, an international travel writer, a multi-award winning writer, has been voted as one of “Canada’s Favourite Moms” by Canadian Living and recognized by the Huffington Post as a top parenting Tweeter. She makes regular TV and radio appearances on CTV Canada AM Parenting Panel and appears regularly on Breakfast Television, CanadaAM and CBC radio. But wait, there’s more! She is the Chief Family Advisor for President's Choice Financial and PC Plus, and has also acted as corporate/media spokesperson/social media consultant for many other companies including Procter & Gamble, Maple Leaf Foods and Pfizer. As one of Canada’s leading media personalities, she’s often asked “how can I do what you do?” Her effective advice is “if you really want to do it, go do it.” The only person stopping you from becoming a media personality is you. On what her biggest obstacle was writing-wise and how to overcome it: Not making it a priority. After my fourth child, I wrote for 20 minutes a day because that’s all the time that I had, plus I had my other three children under the age of 10 at the time. I did this for almost a year. You just have to do it. I know it sounds really simple but it’s what you have to do…just show up. Whether it’s 100 or 1,000 words a day, whether you like or dislike what you’ve written, just write.”
22 MODERN MISSISSAUGA | EARLY SUMMER 2017
After a year of those daily sessions, her first book, “The Secret Life of Supermom” was released in 2005. Her advice to budding entrepreneurs is to determine “what’s the actual reason you’re doing it?” and “what is your end goal? Are your reasons financial, professional, personal, etc?” Kathy stresses the importance of talking with friends, family and other entrepreneurs to get various types of feedback. Being thorough in your research and finding the right contacts is crucial as well. Another strong piece of advice is being able to say “no.” “It’s super important to be able to say “no” as an entrepreneur, especially when you’re starting out. Say no to things that pull away from what your focus is.” As someone who travels twice a month and has many media appearances as well, Kathy still has her foot on the gas pedal and pitches 10-12 ideas weekly. Yes, she’s earned a high level of success through dedication and hard work but she realizes that in order to maintain that, there has to be consistency in promoting herself and her brand. Also equally important is professional and personal goal-setting, of which she sets at least 5 yearly and revisits them at the halfway point to make sure it’s something still worth working towards, or to see if it needs breaking into smaller components. Looking back, Kathy says she should’ve “taken more notes along the way” as the one thing she would consider changing during her entrepreneurial adventure, which is something many entrepreneurs can relate to. She’s currently working on the next book that’s reflective of where she is currently in life and continues to share and enjoy her experiences through her articles and social media.A true hard working self-starter, Kathy is a prime example of what can be achieved with perseverance, hard work, personal accountability and most importantly, showing up.

CANADA’S FIRST
VIRTUAL CAMPUS by shawn slack The City, in partnership with University of Toronto Mississauga (UTM), is launching EDUROAM (education roaming) – a secure, worldwide roaming service. EDUROAM offers students access to post-secondary institutions around the world when they visit City facilities where Wi-Fi access is available. Mississauga is the first Canadian city to make EDUROAM available to its student population. The City has a similar partnership in place with Sheridan College for creating a virtual campus using the City’s free public Wi-Fi network. “Technology plays a significant role in enabling a connected and engaged City,” said Mayor Bonnie Crombie. “The progress we are making through our innovative IT Master Plan positions the City as a leader in Smart City technology. It is also a large part of what makes Mississauga a great place to live, work, attend school or do business.” “The launch of EDUROAM on May 1 positions Mississauga as a leader in providing access that supports learning, innovation and collaboration in our facilities and public spaces,” said Shawn Slack, Chief Information Officer, City of Mississauga. “Through the IT Master Plan process and initiatives like EDUROAM, we are realizing a new and exciting vision. This plan ensures the City is using technology effectively to deliver the services our customers and residents rely on now and for the future.” “We congratulate the City of Mississauga on becoming Canada’s first municipality to offer EDUROAM throughout its public spaces. By doing so, they’ve turned the city into
a virtual campus for students enrolled at their local universities and colleges and those visiting from more than 70 countries who participate in EDUROAM,” said Mark Wolff, CANARIE’s Chief Technology Officer. “CANARIE’s core purpose is the advancement of Canada’s knowledge and innovation infrastructure, so we’re very excited to align with this fantastic initiative in Mississauga. Local students, their Canadian peers, and visitors from the global EDUROAM network will stay connected throughout the city’s public areas – seamlessly.” “The University of Toronto Mississauga applauds Mississauga’s new virtual campus,” said Professor Ulrich Krull, Interim Vice-President of the University of Toronto and Principal of UTM. “Students and faculty members from UTM, and post-secondary visitors from around the world, will benefit by having direct access to online institutional resources at City of Mississauga locations such as libraries, community centres, arenas, transit terminals and public spaces. By implementing EDUROAM the City has created a virtual campus that helps position Mississauga as a global hub of creative and innovative activity where talent can thrive.” The City's free public Wi-Fi is highly valued and used extensively by the public. In 2016 the total usage of every hour of Wi-Fi service was equivalent to 407 years of service in just one year! We continue to provide value with EDUROAM and our Virtual Campus and are also building District Wi-Fi in our business districts and downtown this fall to further our digital transformation into a connected and engaged City.

EMERALD ASH BORER
Continues to Alter Mississauga’s Tree Canopy A highly invasive and destructive beetle – Emerald Ash Borer (EAB), continues to infest Mississauga’s Ash tree population. Prior to the presence of EAB, Ash trees represented roughly 10 percent of Mississauga’s tree canopy. Since confirmation of its presence in Mississauga in 2008, EAB has infested Ash trees in all City wards. Mississauga City Council approved a 10-year EAB Management Program in 2012 which includes treating viable City-owned Ash trees on streets and in parks as well as removing dead and hazardous Ash trees. The City has inspected all city-owned Ash trees on streets and in parks and continues to inspect trees in woodlots. For every tree removed through the EAB program, a replacement tree will be planted or, in cases where the location doesn’t allow for a new tree, one will be planted nearby within the same neighbourhood. To learn more about EAB, visit mississauga.ca/eab. Do you have an Ash tree on your property? If you have an Ash tree on your property, consult a certified arborist for an assessment of its health. A dead or dying tree can be a safety issue and should be professionally removed from private property by certified arborists. SAFE ALTERNATIVES TO CLEANING YOUR by laura qusen We've all heard the news that the age old and trusty wire bristles on BBQ brushes are now considered quite dangerous. No one wants a wire bristle to get stuck in their throat after enjoying a delicious BBQ'd meal, but what are the alternatives? As someone who BBQ’s frequently, I really like the Outset Mesh Scrubber Grill Brush, mainly because it's meant to be used on a hot grill. My significant other will tell you that I'm a germophobe and that nothing can ever be clean enough for me, so trust me when I tell you that scrubbing the grill while it's piping hot helps to disinfect before cooking. The Outset Brush has a long handle so you don't risk singing your arm hair while cleaning (I have done this more times than I care to admit.)
BBQ
The brush pads are made of stainlesssteel mesh that can be used on all grill types, including porcelain and the pads are non-abrasive and soft enough to thoroughly clean between the grill grates. The woven mesh scrubbers are replaceable and for an average price of around $18.00 including the handle, this brush is a great investment.
PRO TIP: Heat your grill to the highest temperature for at least 10 minutes. Dip your Outset Mesh Scrubber Grill Brush in a bucket of clean tap water and scrub the grill. Adding water provides the additional cleaning power of steam! Another great option is the GrillStone® Grill Cleaning Block, a warm or cold grill cleaning option that the manufacturer claims will clean your grill four times faster than wire brushes or scouring pads. While it takes some elbow grease to create grooves in the stone
in order to clean between the grill grates, the cleaning effect is quite remarkable. I really liked the fact that it is 100% chemical free and non-toxic and also that it's made from 95% recycled material. The GrillStone® Grill Cleaning Block is available without a handle through most online and brick & mortar retailers for about $6.00. It's also available as a set with a handle and 2 blocks for around $15. Connect with us on social media with your favourite new wireless BBQ brush!
