MODERN ARTIST:

Aaron De Sousa

by jay kana

| photo courtesy of brendan mariani

Mississauga’s Aaron De Sousa has spent nearly his entire life enveloped with music and now this young and talented artist has released his debut album, “Closer To The Light.” His introduction came at age 6 via piano and proceeded to engage in the Royal Conservatory of Music to Grade 10. He took what he learned and applied it as a foundation to catapult into his own creative realm. It was around this time he started experimenting with songwriting and continuously strove to improve his craft. Aaron was greatly influenced by a creative writing course in high school and that was his favourite class because he saw it as another outlet for him to create. Since songwriting, in essence, is a version of creative writing, it was natural for him to blend the two together and improve his craft. The singing came naturally in his youth but he actually started formal voice lessons at age 20. A short two years later, he started the prestigious four-year degree program majoring in vocals at Humber College, one of the most respected and acclaimed music programs in North America. He successfully graduated in 2014.

8

MODERN MISSISSAUGA | LATE SUMMER 2017

Attending Humber and having his network expand vastly was the catalyst for De Sousa to realize that music could very well become a career for him. As he delved into his education, he decided that trying to make a career in music was something he was going to move forward with. He’s been passionate about music from a very young age and that love has always been part of who he is and his time and growth at Humber accentuated that. He keeps in touch with his friends from school and goes on to say “I’m inspired by not only popular artists but also from my peers.” I asked Aaron why he chose “Closer To The Light” as the album name (which he decided to start work on in autumn 2016), to which he responded: “When you create and being and artist, you’re shedding light on who you are as an artist, human being and person and allowing it to reflect your personality.” The lead single “Wings Of Love” was written a few days prior to the Orlando nightclub tragedy and in the aftermath, the song meaning intensified. Of the song's lyrics, Aaron says: “It’s about allowing love in your life because I think we focus too much on what’s dark

and what’s mean and what’s wrong that we forget that there’s still love and goodness and kindness in the world.” What you’ll find music-wise on his ninesong album are varying influences including of rock, pop, R&B, country, dance, reggae and funk. “Some of my favourite albums are ones that aren’t limited to just one genre… Tapestry by Carole King, Rumors by Fleetwood Mac, Jagged Little Pill by Alanis Morissette… I’m influenced really by a bit of everything” says Aaron. This is also due in part to his personal musical influences, including Lady Gaga for her wide skill set, Pink, who inspired him to begin songwriting, Adele for sincerity and authenticity and Celine Dion for her vocal prowess. Aaron also teaches piano and vocals at the Mississauga Academy of Music for the past 5 years and is performing as often as possible in the GTA. Keep your eyes and ears out for this incredibly talented musician and artist as the best is yet to come for Mississauga’s rising star. Keep up with him on Instagram via @sousaaaronde.

A SIZZLING SUMMER IS HERE

How are you taking advantage of this precious time? by kimberley langen, CEO & co-founder, Spirit of Math

®

Schools

Summer is here, which for most students, means two months of holiday – or more for private schools. That’s 1/6 of the year. What are you going to do with your kids? In North America, many parents believe that it is a time to let kids relax, have fun and generally do what they want. Why not, they say, kids are working hard all year, so they deserve a rest. Do they really deserve a 1/6 of the year rest? Rest, or more accurately, a change is needed, but this does not mean that no learning should happen for such an extended period of time. Studies show that over the summer, students lose up to 20% of what they’ve learned over the school year (Review of Educational Research, H.Cooper.1996) – that’s equivalent to nearly 2 months worth of education. Teachers spend as much as a quarter of the year re-teaching material from the previous grade. These losses are especially evident in math and reading. In addition, other studies have shown that the significant differences in academic

abilities between students happen during the summer. In other words, students may end the school year at the same academic levels, but there is a widening of the levels each year, and much of this happens during the summer holidays. It is thought that what is done during those 2 months makes a significant impact on the students’ academic success. A rest or change of pace is good for the summer, however, learning can still take place – and your child will appreciate it! Keeping your child’s mind challenged over the summer doesn’t need to be a challenge. As little as 20 minutes a day of thought provoking problems can make all the difference and can provide fun quality time with your kids. I wish you all a very happy sizzling summer holiday! THE ART GALLERY OF MISSISSAUGA photo courtesy of yasmin said As a public art gallery with a strong community connection, the AGM is interested in assisting visitors as they learn about art. Projects that actively engage our community and reflect an awareness of contemporary and relevant cultural topics and issues are of particular interest. The AGM provides platforms for exhibitions, collections and experimentation in contemporary culture with a recent focus on artists and cultural producers from Indigenous, newcomer and youth communities. Through a broad range of educational programs, artist projects and other forms of critical dialogue, the AGM seeks to transcend traditional disciplinary boundaries, foster community, and provide spaces where alternative modes of thought are supported and activated in tangible ways. The AGM is proud to admit people free of charge, serve communities, and provide positive visual art experiences for all visitors. Here is some information about AGM’s current Community Programming! QTBIPOC Sauga began in January 2016, as a way of responding to the serious lack of spaces for queer and trans Black, Indigenous and People of Colour in Peel. There is a long history of QTBIPOC organizing in Peel, contrary to popular mythology. These community-driven informal meetups are grounded in the belief that queer and trans organizing never takes place in a vacuum; it is informed, encouraged and challenged by all that has happened before. Engaging in the themes of each exhibition, QTBIPOC meetups and crafting sessions are about building connections, hanging out, sharing food together and getting to know each other better. All are welcome. Snacks provided. All gender washroom. Contact the AGM for information on the next session – agm.connect@mississauga.ca and visit www.qtbipocsauga.ca for further details! BORDER CROSSINGS Border Crossings is an archaeology of the present. By using stories and narratives as our main resource, we aim to fuel alternative ways of seeing across a broad range of physical and cultural contexts, led by a collective of Indigenous and nonIndigenous artists working together to produce a significant body of work that transcends colonial politics and art-making. Border Crossings celebrates the Art Gallery

of Mississauga’s commitment to bringing people and communities together using art as a common denominator. Through this project, Indigenous and non-Indigenous communities engage with ideas of self-representation to question colonial narratives and present parallel histories while exploring relationships between the spiritual, the uncanny and every day. These stories will be personal and powerful, giving the audience access to personal histories and realities. Connecting our past to our present, these stories will be treated as media art pieces, which will highlight, reinforce and challenge both traditional and contemporary worldviews as they relate to our relationship to land, to one another, share philosophies and teachings as they pertain to connection of time and place, and share the laughs and the heartbreak. Finally, Border Crossings will culminate in an interactive multimedia installation. Through a combination of documentary audio, photographs, text, collage, objects, songs and an antique wardrobe trunk, the audience will be invited to explore the participants’ stories and share their own. South eastern Quebec is where you’ll discover absolute beauty through the Maritime region of “La belle province.” With over 3,000 km of coastline, nearly 300,000 km in area, 10 national parks, thousands of lakes and rivers and plethora of postcard-worthy scenery, this historical and modernly beautiful part of Canada is truly worth experiencing. I spent a week there this summer, made some new wonderful friends in Suzie, Gillian and Janna, and am happy to share my adventures and finds with you, with hopes that you’ll experience it yourself! The small yet majestic Île Verte, on the south shore of the St. Lawrence, is home to Quebec’s oldest lighthouse, circa 1809. Embracing its quiet yet enchanting feel, you’ll easily snap plenty of photos of the lighthouse and surrounding areas throughout the day. The former lighthouse keeper’s houses now operate as a cozy bed and breakfast, called Maisons du Phare, where there are nine rooms available, all of them rustic and comfortable for family and friends. Sunsets are especially beautiful as the sun kisses the horizon with the lighthouse as the exclamation mark on the gorgeous scene. When you arrive, there are several small shops that will happily welcome you, Quebec’s only animal skeleton museum to experience and venture back in time with a visit to their old school house. Though only 13km in length, biking along the quiet roads is enjoyable, regardless of experience. If you’re partial to putting one foot in front of the other, hiking across the shorelines are highly recommended. Be sure to visit the quaint Café l’Échouerie for a true and hearty home-cooked meal served with a waters view for a memorable dining experience. The village of Tadoussac, Canada’s first trading post built in 1600, is on the north-west shore of the St. Lawrence and a popular spot for whale watching due to the cold salt water from the St. Lawrence Estuary invading the depths of the fjord while warmer fresh water comes from along the surface from Saguenay River. The resulting marine-rich environment is abound with krill, which attract hundreds of whales. The two-hour Zodiac boat whale-watching tour I took via Croisières AML was astounding and my group was fortunate to see over a dozen whales and a beautiful mountainous waterfall, all while enjoying time on the water.

14 MODERN MISSISSAUGA | LATE SUMMER 2017

There’s a Marine Mammal Interpretation Centre in town that complements the whale watching by offering an array of videos, information, skeletons, booklets and on-site experts to help you understand these giants of the sea. The owner-operated Auberge La Sainte-Paix was full of charm with its six quaint rooms and one loft, complete with a view of the water and whales from their property. This delightful bed and breakfast with historically themed rooms will certainly be seeing me again! Accenting to their vibrant atmosphere is their food scene. Père Coquart, with a wonderful selection of pizza’s and beer, plus other casual pub favourites is a must-visit. In the heart of the village is La Galouïne Inn and Restaurant, a popular dining spot that serves mouthwatering seafood and casual fare, along with stellar service. For food, drinks and live entertainment, look no further than Le Gibard, complete with a second storey patio overlooking the water. I ended up there on four different occasions! Your sweet tooth will thank you if you visit Chocolaterie Cétacébon, which saw me purchase quite a few decadent, artisanal items that didn’t stay in the wrapper very long. The Kamouraska village is overflowing with small-town charm and you’ll enjoy warm hospitality, a chocolate factory, a German bakery, a handcrafted soap maker (Savonnerie Quai des Bulles) and beautiful views. A short drive east of there will land you in Rivière-du-Loup, where you’ll find Auberge de la Pointe, home of one of the most stunning sunsets on the water, along with a classy dining experience and comfortable lodging. Seeing as this is the Maritimes region, you’ll be taking ferries across the river to get to some destinations, including the 65 minute ride

from Rivière-duLoup–Saint-Siméon, where you’ll certainly get plenty of great pictures, from there to Tadoussac and of course, you’ll be ferrying to the aforementioned Île Verte. My five days enjoying and experiencing Quebec’s Maritime region uncovered a hidden gem of sorts for me. It’s a short jaunt east of Quebec City and illustrates a different side of this beautiful province. I have a strengthened love for our Easternly neighbour, made new and fond memories, have hundreds of photographs to organize, all coupled with a certainty to return. CYCLING IN THE

city photo courtesy of the city of mississauga As Mississauga continually moves forward to become a leading edge, complete and world class city, there are many moving parts to be considered, with cycling being a key component. We’re in the midst of a pivotal moment of forward motion as the Cycling Master Plan is being updated through studies and community feedback and will be presented in early 2018, the upcoming massive LRT project just may have raised cycle tracks (that decision is happening much sooner than later), there’s an increased number of cyclists on our roads and there’s been funding allotted to increase the networks of bike lanes, which will help ease the existing congestion on our roads. Currently, we enjoy 454 km of cycling infrastructure in the city, with plans to develop more than 900 km of on and off-road cycling routes in the next 20 years. Ambitious? Of course. Can we do it? Absolutely. I spoke with Pauline Craig, Cycling Master Plan Project Lead, and asked the simple question of “why is cycling so important to Mississauga?” Her response was: “Cycling is a key part of developing a transportation network that supports and encourages people to walk, cycle and use public transit. We’re building our cycling network to connect to key destinations and transit facilities so that Mississauga residents will have active, healthy and affordable travel options that are as convenient as, or more convenient than driving.” Why is Craig’s quote so important? Well, as we continue to develop and grow, we most likely won’t have the road capacity

16 MODERN MISSISSAUGA | LATE SUMMER 2017

y

to accommodate more cars. The Hurontario LRT is a key example. Could the city have made it an eight lane street? Possibly in some places but there are businesses, houses, buildings, etc. that would’ve made it nearly impossible to retrofit. Instead, we’re marching forward with a transit option that will ease congestion, despite the short-term growing pains. With or without the proposed dedicated bike lanes along the LRT, or any other major artery for that matter, having more bike lanes that connect further throughout the city and to transit stations and hubs will make a positive impact. Ward 3 Councillor Chris Fonseca, who we also spoke with, says “We’ve come a long way in the past few years and we’re hearing from residents that both want to ride and are riding more and more. We’re also hearing from those that are ‘interested but concerned’ that there are gaps in safety, infrastructure and end of trip facilities. Meaning are there enough bike racks at their end destination (schools, work, city buildings, etc.) for them to utilize the existing and upcoming cycling lanes/paths?” Safety-wise, there’s much work to do as Mississauga is by far a car-based city. On roads without bike lanes, right lane drivers will possibly pass too close to cyclists or dip into the next lane to ensure zero bike contact is made but risking clipping any vehicle in that neighbouring lane. We’re not catastrophic by any means on the safety side but as long as there are cycling accidents on roads, there’s always work to do. And dedicated bike lanes are a strong solution to reducing that risk. Plus, it’s much easier to incorporate bike lanes into new plans opposed to trying to retrofit them. Her other point of “end of trip facilities” is something that will be addressed in the upcoming 2018 Cycling Master Plan and the upcoming Transportation Demand Management Plan. With cycling no longer being an afterthought and the city planning for an increase in cyclists moving throughout Mississauga, there simply must be an increase in bike racks/ storage to help complete the proverbial loop. With all of this positive talk about cycling and helping it shape our city, there are a few hurdles to clear. One of them is how to handle the existing landscape. There are existing highways, river ways and rail corridors that pose a challenge for creation and in some cases, can be significant barriers to expanding the cycling network. Another is finding safe and strategic locations for crossing those barriers and added the potential added expenses of creating cycling/pedestrian bridges where necessary. Furthermore, focusing on which pieces to add, when and how to add them and how to do it best is crucial with this expansion. Yes, the network will provide facilities across our city but the building process must be carefully planned one

In short, prioritization is a challenge in any aspect of city building. The good news is that there have been funds allotted for this. with the Streetsville GO Station. There’s also up to $42.5 million for eligible municipalities for cycling projects throughout Ontario from the province as well. The cycling community has grown significantly in recent years in part through the citizen led Mississauga Cycling Advisory Committee (MCAC) consisting of 12 citizens, including cycling advocate Dorothy Tomiuk, who also wants to see Mississauga’s cycling network grow both smartly and safely. Their five pillars are “Move, Belong, Connect, Prosper, Green” and have done their part to increase visibility of cycling by hosting their now popular free (ice cream included!) “Community Rides” that happen every Thursday and Saturday from May to October in various parts of the city. It’s grown from 280 riders in 2013 to 3,100 in 2016! This smart initiative allows residents to connect with each other (as well as Councillor Fonseca, who’s on the committee) and have their voices, ideas and suggestions heard. Included in these rides are safety lessons and is open to any age group and skill level. In addition to getting some outdoor time, exercise and connecting within your community, it’s a great way to truly see our city. With Mississauga growing quickly from numerous aspects (M Town, LRT, Malton, Lakeview, Dundas Connects, etc.) cycling is going to play a key role in how our city is shaped going forward. You can participate in the Does Cycling Move You project to update the City’s Cycling Master Plan by visiting: DoesCyclingMoveYou.ca – share your ideas and take the city’s Cycling Survey. There will also be a public meeting this fall / winter to check out the draft plan to make Mississauga more bicycle friendly. We’ve already come a long way from being built as a car-city to embracing cycling. Between the Cycling Master Plan, engaged community groups like MCAC, public feedback and a willingness to opt for two wheels instead of four when possible, the “if you build it, they will come” adage rings true. We’re ready for the next phase of “if you continue to build it, they will continue to come.”

ENGAGING THE LOCAL

modern TEC HNO LOGY

TECH COMMUNITY

Are you looking for an opportunity to get involved with the local tech community in Mississauga? The City of Mississauga’s Information Technology (IT) division works with a number of local partners to provide opportunities for tech savvy individuals to network with fellow tech enthusiasts, gain valuable experience and get involved with the local tech community. LOCAL MEETUPS Local tech meetups are a great way to engage with like-minded individuals who share a passion for technology. The City is a supporter of HackerNest, a global non-profit tech community which recently celebrated their one year anniversary operating in Mississauga. HackerNest Mississauga events are held bi-monthly at venues throughout the city. Visit meetup.com/HackerNestMIS/ for more information. OPEN DATA The City is a strong advocate of the Open Data movement. In 2016, the City launched a new Open Data catalogue to provide data sets to residents and businesses. Today, the catalogue includes over 100 data sets ranging from election data to real-time transit feed data. Earlier this year, the City’s Open Data Working Group was recognized with the Public Sector Digest’s “Most Improved” Award for the 2016 Open Cities Index. View the City’s open data catalogue at data.mississauga.ca. MEASURING LOCAL INTERNET PERFORMANCE The City and the Canadian Internet Registration Authority (CIRA) recently launched a six-month pilot program asking residents and businesses to test the speed and quality of their internet connection. The program will help identify areas in Mississauga

that have adequate internet service and those that need improvement. To take the test, visit https://performance.cira.ca/Mississauga. INTERNSHIP & MENTORSHIP PROGRAMS In 2014, the City’s IT division partnered with Sheridan College to initiate a new Internship Program. Each semester, a growing number of students take part in the program and receive handson experience in service management, desktop support and helpdesk services. This year, the City’s Digital Services team also partnered with Sheridan College to mentor a number of student groups that are completing their final year Capstone projects. HACK DAY / IDEA JAM EVENTS Hackathons are another way to engage with your local tech community. Last year, the City co-hosted ‘Code and the City’, its first hack day event in partnership with Sheridan College, UTM iCUBE and local technology company SOTI Inc. The event took place on International Open Data day and attracted over 90 participants. The City is co-hosting another hack day event this year. 'Tech and the City' will take place on Saturday, October 21 and will focus on solutions that will help build a connected and smart community. The event is co-hosted by the City of Mississauga, Sheridan College, UTM iCUBE, RIC Centre and SOTI Inc., and will take place at the University of Toronto Mississauga’s Innovation Complex. Potential participants can find out more details by visiting techandthecity.ca. The technology community in Mississauga continues to grow and develop each year. So whether you are part of a start-up, attending a HackerNest meeting or taking part in 'Tech and the City', you will be a part of a growing and developing tech sector in Mississauga. 2017 HONDA by jay kana Honda has launched the fifth generation Odyssey minivan in a world that leans towards the SUV market and I’m quite happy about that. Personally, I’d pick a minivan over an SUV if I had a few dependents in my life (no, my cats and guitars don’t count) for one primary reason; sliding doors…those wonderful, functional sliding doors. There’s an all-new 3.5L V6 motor offered that gives this living room on wheels 280 horsepower and 262 lb-ft. of torque. There’s also a standard nine-speed automatic transmission with the top Touring trim receiving a 10-speed gearbox. The new Active Shutter Grille system contributes toward improved fuel efficiency when cruising. Fuel economy on the L/100km for city/highway/combined scale rate a 12.6/8.4/10.7 for the 9-speed and 12.2/8.5/10.6 for the 10-speed, which is respectable given the size and weight of this people mover. It’s Front Wheel Drive only across the board but to combat the absence of All-Wheel Drive, Honda offers a “Snow” mode, which starts in second gear and a less aggressive throttle response to increase traction. On the road, the Odyssey made me forget there were a few feet of car attached to the body. It felt much more like a CR-V than a full-

sized minivan and it was only when parking it was I reminded of its larger size. Thanks to the backup camera, no dings or dents occurred. Mirroring Acura, the P R N D choices are all buttons, a smart move made to maximize space. You’ll eventually get used to it and they’ve made reverse gear a button you pull instead of push so there are no accidental gear choices. The 8” infotainment includes Apple Carplay and Android Auto and like an iPhone, you can move order of tiles on the touchscreen to put your most used apps/tiles on the main screen. There’s a very cool “How Much Farther?” app that mimics a flight tracker so you’ll no longer have to answer the dreaded “are we there yet?” questions. The top Touring trim sees CabinWatch; a ceiling mounted camera that shows what’s happening in rear rows through the infotainment system and much safer than turning to look backwards when driving forwards. The Lanewatch system shows up on all EX/EX-L trims and the Touring trim sees the Blind Spot Information System introduced. I’m most impressed with the Honda Sensing (Adaptive Cruise Control, Lane Keep Assist & Departure Warning, Forward Collision

y e s dys Warning, etc.) being a standard feature and I’m confident that more manufacturers will have their own collection of standard safety features sooner than later. Way at the back is a vacuum (sans base trim) to help keep the car clean without lugging your own vacuum onto the driveway… full marks, Honda! Speaking of the back, cargo space with the third row up on the Touring trim is 929 L, behind the second row is 2,452 L and behind the front seats is a whopping 3,973 L. The innovative and impressive attraction here is the Magic Slide Seats, which will drastically reduce the bickering/touching/punching/ hitting/poking/slapping/throwing of food and toys for your two middle seat occupants. Out of the box, the Odyssey comes with three individual seats in the second row. Simply remove the middle seat (if I can do it solo, anyone can) and the two remaining seats sit on a rail system, where both can be moved to five different seating positions. If the kids are fighting, put them at opposite sides. If they’re getting along, you can pull the seats next to each other. Yes, the Stow N’ Go invention was handy for hauling non-people but

this innovation by Honda is even more noteworthy by helping increase the level of calmness for everyone inside. Additionally, you can have the two seats to one side of the Odyssey for much easier access to the third row, which is great for the younger and older generation. The new Odyssey has a great exterior appearance, continuing with their “lightning bolt” design along the rear side panels, hidden sliding rear door tracks and a new “floating” D-pillar design. Pair that with the well-crafted and spacious interior and innovative tech and Honda has a strong offering in the small yet competitive minivan market. Pricing for this premium minivan ranges from the mid $30K mark to a touch above the $50K mark, with many trim levels and options in between. That large gap in pricing allows nearly every type of buyer find what they need from the Odyssey lineup. Even though SUV's and crossovers are all the rage, those who love and appreciate the usefulness and practicality of sliding doors will keep the minivan market moving forward. Add in Honda’s high level of available technology, a comfortable ride and a true “living room on wheels” feel and you should be seeing plenty of these new Odyssey’s on the road.

GENESIS MOTORS

Redefines the Luxury Vehicle Ownership Experience by jay kana The newest addition to the luxury vehicle segment is Genesis Motors, a brand that will compete amongst the best automotive brands in the world with vehicles that deliver refined performance and athletic elegance in design. However, setting Genesis apart from competitors will be human-focused innovation creating a stress-free customer experience. The key to that approach will be a modern, comprehensive online platform to empower a luxury automotive customer in ways unique in the industry. For example, potential owners will be able to schedule an at-home demonstration and vehicle test drive with a Genesis Experience Manager at a location of their choosing. They can even complete lease or finance paperwork, make a deposit, and place an order for a new vehicle through the digital platform from the comfort of their home or office. Equally important, all quotes are transparent, with set, all-inclusive pricing. As a result, every price for a Genesis vehicle not only includes delivery and destination charges typically added-on at purchase, but also services such as complimentary scheduled maintenance and navigation software updates for 5 years or 100,000 km. Further, the Genesis at Home concierge service extends from the purchase process into the ownership period when customers can have their vehicle picked up for scheduled maintenance, receive a courtesy vehicle, and have their vehicle returned when complete. “We recognize that most every vehicle competing in the luxury segment is a welldesigned product. It has to be; an excellent car is what all luxury customers expect from the outset. Genesis is different and goes beyond exceptional cars by providing a human-centred purchase and ownership experience,” says Michael Ricciuto, Director of Genesis. “Genesis will bring the brand into customers’ lives in a harmonious way, saving them time with simplified, set pricing, fully-equipped models, and the Genesis at Home concierge service for sales and service.” All Genesis models will boast outstanding driving dynamics and design, with innovations tailored to closely-meet the needs of customers. The model line-up will distance itself from the traditional technological overload of brand-focused competitors, concentrating instead on a personalized, hassle-free interaction with the vehicle. This extends to vehicle options, where simplified packaging ensures Genesis models come fully-equipped with standard technology and features customers want in a luxury vehicle, including advanced safety systems, ultra-soft Nappa leather, and HTRAC all-wheel drive. This year, Genesis Motors Canada will further elevate its customer experience offline by launching boutique retail locations in shopping centres across Canada. Maintaining Genesis’ focus on authenticity, they will offer a luxury shopping experience in a sophisticated store setting. This fall, watch for Genesis Mississauga to be launched inside Square One Shopping Mall – visit Genesis.ca for more information.

Top 10 Back-to-School Essentials

by john murray lewis

And so another summer comes to a close, and the hearts of children everywhere fill up with visions of the coming school year. New subjects, new friends, the faint odour of years-old peanut butter... vivid memories that will last a lifetime, sustaining the youth of today even as they struggle to find meaningful careers in a labour market monopolized by robots and capitalist warlocks. I still fondly recall my years as a student in the mountain lodges of Northern Manitoba, days and nights spent learning about the wilderness and my own changing body. But don't worry! I'm not here to tell you how, back in my day, we needed to walk uphill to school both ways, even though we did, due to the extremely unusual tectonic activity in Manitoba in the 1990s. No, I'm here to hook you up with the top 10 hottest, most essential must-have accessories that will take you from F to A+ in 2017-2018!

8. SOCIAL MEDIA. From InstaGreg to SnapChart, I'm told that social media is the media to beat in 2017. And I always believe what I'm told, like that social media can be an effective tool for studying! Can't solve for x? I bet someone on FarceBook can!

1. SHOES. Don't even bother showing up if you don't have the freshest set of hip-hop floppies. Think you can get by in your tube socks? That's how you get called "Stinkfoot," Stinkfoot. (I speak from experience; to this day I can't even bring myself to look at a sock without blacking out.)

So, there you have it: ten essential accessories that are guaranteed to make you a winner. For now, at least. Just don't go expecting a reliable job with a livable wage once you graduate!

2. A SACK. Where else are you going to carry your shoes? (What, you weren't going to ruin them by putting them on your feet, were you?) Burlap's hard to beat, but if you're strapped for cash or if a bear ate your primary sack, try layering plastic bags for nextlevel carrying capacity on the cheap. 3. ROPE. A good length of rope is endlessly useful. Nylon is great, but I recommend hemp for superior all-natural tensile strength. A sturdy rope will see you through at least three years of Phys Ed, World Literature, and Hog Tying. 4. POPULARITY. Everyone knows that popularity is the de facto currency of the schoolyard market. Raise your stock by offering your classmates complementary bagels, remarking on the pleasing texture of their follicles, or spraying an animal pheromone in your homeroom. 5. BEAR CREAM. If there's one thing I remember about school, it's the empty sucking feeling as all the curiosity and joy was expunged from my mind by an unrelenting series of standardized tests. But I also vaguely remember bears; they would certainly explain the horrifying scars across my torso. In any event, better safe than sorry. Don't forget your bear-repellent cream! 6. JERKY. Doctors can't stop extolling the benefits of salty, dried-up meat. What else can fuel a do-or-die cram sesh? (FYI: It's Board policy in Mississauga to remove your hands if you're caught snacking in class; if it happens to you, find a way to pin it on the strange kid with the good hair who plays all the sports. What a weirdo.) 7. PERSONAL ELECTRONIC DEVICE. We didn't have the internet or running water back in the 1990s, but that doesn't mean I'm still living in the "age of the Dinosaurs" (5000 BC - 1996 AD, RIP). I know you kids today love to stay connected. So keep that Tamagotchi happy!

9. POGS. The original fidget spinners. What could be more satisfying than slamming down a fat metal disc onto a tall stack of bottle cap inserts? Give it a try and you'll understand how POGs got us through those long, cold Manitoba nights, alone with our warm, musky bodies, the wolves howling just outside the door... 10. THOSE GLASSES THAT HAVE EYEBALLS PAINTED ON THE LENSES. Some tricks just never get old. "Hey, is that dude in the glasses napping?" "No way! Can't you see he's wide awake?!" Classic.

TIPS FOR THE PERFECT FIT THIS SUMMER

F I N D Y O U R N E W F AV O U R I T E S W I M S U I T F O R W H E R E V E R YO U R A DV E N T U R E S TA K E YO U

Summer is here and Canadians know it’s time to enjoy the sunshine while it lasts! Don’t waste a minute of our wonderful warm weather trying ill-fitting swimwear or chasing associates for help. This summer, go to the Fit Experts, like we did, at Swimco.

Q: Swimsuit shopping can be stressful -

what would you say to someone who hates trying them on? A: Go in with an open mind and a positive outlook. And of course, don’t be afraid to ask for help! Swimsuit shopping can be daunting, but at Swimco we know our stuff. We’ve found beautiful styles for all shapes and sizes. After all, we’ve been helping Canadians Feel Good Half Naked for over 40 years!

26 MODERN MISSISSAUGA | LATE SUMMER 2017

Q: What should we know when shopping

for a swimsuit? A: Swimwear sizing is different than clothing, so don’t focus on that. You might go up a size or you might not, but the important part is the right fit, not what the tag says. No one else sees the size, but they will see how good you feel!

Q: Should friends help when shopping? A: While having friends along is nice,

I think it’s more important to get the help of a Fit Expert. We know our products inside and out, so we can bring you the best styles and sizes for you. It’s a really personalized experience and by then end I think we’ll be good friends too!

Q: Is there any swimsuit that is universally flattering or is a wardrobe ‘must-have’? A: Classic black swimwear will always do the trick. You can choose a one piece, tankini, or LBB (little black bikini) - they’re all suitcase staples. Q: Are there ‘rules’ for certain body shapes? A: Rules are meant to be broken! I prefer

‘guidelines’. Generally, patterns or details on a part of your body will draw the eye there and away from other areas. Flowy fabric can skim over things or add balance to your frame too. With mix and match bikinis and tankinis you get total control of fit and style to make the most of your shape. Also, one pieces are super flattering on most, and so trendy right now! Whatever your preference, our Fit Experts want to help you find the perfect swimsuit so you Feel Good Half Naked!
