“More than my city, Mississauga is my home.” When you were a child, you depended on others for a good place to call home. Now kids are depending on you. When you were young, your neighbourhood was more than just your community, it represented a world of exciting possibilities. Playing street hockey, you dreamed of being a superstar and of winning the cup. Whizzing at breakneck speed downhill on your bike, you imagined becoming a pilot... or, better yet, an astronaut! Outside all day, you only returned home when the streetlights came on. Looking back, it was quite a charmed life. As you got older, life changed... friends moved on, and so did you. You graduated, got a job, and started a family. You made a new home. Your community got bigger, too. Your concept of ‘home’ now went beyond the definition of safe neighbourhoods, and of having parks and schools nearby. Home now meant having opportunities for employment,

great healthcare, and improved transit. Today, your expanded view of home is bigger still... now home is more than your city, it’s a thriving community where people are better connected to the things that matter to them.

Tell us your ideas and what investments you’d like to make, so that we can help turn your dreams into reality. We are the Community Foundation of Mississauga and, with you, we look forward to creating a world of possibilities right here at home for our children, and our children’s children, for generations to come.

A place everyone can call home Home is a place where people not only want to live but actually love to live. It’s a place where you can be part of something amazing; a place where your vision and contributions make for a better, more vibrant community that everyone can proudly call home! Mississauga is your home and, as such, it’s worth investing in for the long term. What are your dreams for Mississauga in the next ten, fifty, or even one hundred years?

MISSISSAUGA ARTS COUNCIL

When Mike Douglas became the Interim Executive Director of the Mississauga Arts Council (MAC), he knew the role would be fun, but wasn’t sure how or why. Now as he’s spending his time trying on masks and devising mysteries for MAC’s upcoming gala, he knows he’s enjoying himself because it’s an opportunity to bring his experience in show business to a job that touches every art form in the city. “Coming to work at City Hall every day has been a joy, and the work that has put me here is challenging, surprising and exciting,” Douglas explains. “After a record breaking MARTY Awards, we have an opportunity now to show we are living in a truly creative city.” For the upcoming Magical Masquerade Ball, Douglas and his team at MAC are planning the most unforgettable Halloween party the city has ever seen, and the biggest fundraiser MAC has ever produced. “MAC needs funds to help young artists learn about the career options available to them in the arts,” Douglas said, explaining

that the money raised at the Gala will support MAC Limelight, the youth portion of the Arts Council, and their epic Culture Lab event. “Our first year experience at Culture Lab was tremendous. The reviews from high school students were fantastic.” Culture Lab featured experienced artists sharing how they got there, what they learned along the way, and what students needed to know in order to avoid mistakes and be successful in a career they love. “The Magical Masquerade Ball gives an opportunity for our arts supporters, sponsors, and believers to stand up for the arts in this city and youth in their career discovery.”

MODERN MUSIC: Alessia Cohle

by jay kana | photo courtesy of marcie costello photography Exciting, exhilarating and especially hard working Canadian country singer-songwriter Alessia Cohle has been immersed in music for nearly her entire life. Coming from a musical family, the "city girl with a country heart" and native of Mississauga is putting her own stamp on country music, one heartfelt song at a time. She's enjoyed tremendous early successes from the 2015 release of her debut EP "Let's Get Gone" to widespread international radio play, several television appearances, and frequent visits to Nashville

Sat. Oct. 22nd, 11am – 5pm Sun. Oct. 23rd, 11am – 4pm Artists will be found all along Lakeshore Rd. E. in various Port Credit business locations, galleries and the library. A free event.

to continuously hone her craft. In Nashville, she’s also had the opportunity to collaborate with other talented songwriters and do some recording. “I go to Nashville all the time for songwriting trips…I love co-writing because you can bounce ideas off other people,” says Cohle. What better place for her to showcase her talents and grow as a songwriter than the capital of country music? Her hard work, dedication and passion for music resulted in Alessia being awarded a full FACTOR grant and she's working with award-winning producers towards completing her first full length album, due out later this year. As someone who’s received a FACTOR grant in a previous life, I know just how hard the process is, and it’s a huge accomplishment for her. "Sunday Shoes" kicked off as her debut single, complete with video, from the aforementioned "Let's Get Gone" EP and has quickly become a favourite among listeners - both new and loyal and goes over quite well, especially during live performances. Her captivating, soulful and “heart-on-her-sleeve” songwriting approach has consistently impressed audiences through numerous live performances, and the stage is truly her second home. When asked what makes live performance such an important part of her musical career, she says: "My dream onstage moment is when I can point the microphone to the crowd and have them sing my song back to me. It doesn't matter which song it is...that's my ‘I've made it’ moment." She’s performed most recently at the Mississauga Waterfront Festival and Ribfest, and with Alessia’s popularity quickly growing, expect to see her on many more stages in Mississauga and beyond. Classically trained in voice and piano, Alessia’s desire to enhance her natural talents as a musician led her to the University of Western Ontario where she graduated with a Bachelor of Music, Honors Specialization in Music Education (Voice). She then earned acceptance into the inaugural class at the prestigious Berklee College of Music - Valencia Campus in Spain, where her hard work resulted in a Master of Music in Contemporary Performance degree. Now, she has the talent and the certification to back her up! Alessia's eyes and ears for detail, passion for creating wellwritten music and unmatched drive and dedication have catapulted her forward tremendously in such a short amount of time. Her ambition, drive and perseverance are unmatched and truly, the best is yet to come. For everything she has already accomplished, this unique Canadian talent is only getting started.

DO YOU KNOW WHO YOU ARE:

A REVIEW OF ‘HOW TO SET A FIRE AND WHY’ BY JESSE BALL by ashley bergart Jesse Ball’s follow-up to 2015’s A Cure for Suicide continues to toy with the difficulties surrounding the formation of one’s identity within the boundaries of modern existentialism. In How to Set a Fire and Why, Ball revisits this theme, adding sharp dialogue and characters who continue to question the reasons behind human action, the existence of individualism and free will, and the implications that these have on the shaping of one’s self. Lucia Stanton has lived through the unimaginable. After the mysterious murder of her father, which then causes her mother’s mental deterioration, she begins to question where she fits in a world that has so deeply altered who she thought that she was, and what she had planned for her future. Raised by parents who encouraged Lucia to question the idea of private ownership, property, capitalism, and the importance (or, unimportance) of wealth, she is determined to show her disdain for and overt rejection of societal norms, assuring herself that she will never break her most important self-imposed rule— to never become a robot. Though Lucia is extremely intelligent and is consistently praised for her academic accomplishments (when she bothers to go to school at all) she is uninterested in pursuing higher education, does not respect those who are traditionally thought of as her superiors (teachers, elders), and purposely disregards the rules that they, and democratic, capitalist society have set for her. How to Set a Fire and Why portrays secular antidisestablishmentarianism through fiction in such

a profound way that has not been done since Chuck Palahniuk’s Fight Club. Ball’s novel successfully explores the dichotomizing question—can we, as humans, accept a world devoid of purpose and meaning, or do we have to assign categories to all that exists? For Lucia, the answer is clear; she must consistently refuse to follow the path that others have created for her, and instead, seek to burn—figuratively and literally—down what is, in her opinion, holding society back from its true potential. How to Set a Fire and Why begs the question: Who will you be, when you aren’t what everyone thought you were?

10 MODERN MISSISSAUGA | LATE SUMMER 2016

by kyle wyskiel You’ve probably driven past it before, along the Lakeshore it’s not exactly hidden, but it’s a gem nonetheless. From the outside, it would be hard to guess that it was constructed as part of a 40-acre munitions plant, manufacturing guns and small arms for Canadian troops during WWII. This Small Arms Building is a sleeping giant, and its awakening has begun. Decommissioned in 1974, the building has been vacant since 2009. Saved from the wrecking ball in 2008 by a group of committed community members, now the Small Arms Society (SAS), it was designated by the City of Mississauga under the Ontario Heritage Act. SAS and the community envision the transformation and reanimation of this wonderful light-filled industrial building with breathtaking spaces into a creative hub for the community in partnership with the City and the Toronto and Region Conservation Authority. SAS celebrates the restoration of the building with In Situ, a three-day multi-arts event planned for October 27th to 29th and intended to animate the space, build awareness, and engage the community in its potential as a creative hub. Partners will come together to celebrate arts, culture, and the environment through performance, installation pieces, mentorship opportunities and more. Imagine the building being transformed by local and emerging artists, live music, live art creation and pop up theatre performances! The public and students from local schools will participate in opportunities to learn about the rich history of the site and building through walking tours, art performances and displays. You can be part of the reimagining process by seeing designs from the Sheridan College Architectural Technology program students who have produced innovative designs for both the site and building. Located at 1352 Lakeshore Road East, The Small Arms Building has been part of the significant history of the area. There has been a strong industrial and military presence in Lakeview, playing an important role in Canada’s history from the early 1800s. The Small Arms Inspection Building is the last remaining building on the site dating from the 1940s. The building’s transformation will be an important part of the revitalization of the Lakeview corridor and waterfront. For more information on In Situ and the Small Arms Building, visit www.smallarmsbuilding.ca.

m oder n TEC HNO LOGY

"I just caught a Growlithe in the park over there." "Where, across the street? Near the lure?" "Yeah. It wasn't the first one, either - I think there might be a nest." No, this isn't a conversation overheard between children playing pretend. This was between a thirtysomething man in Prada sunglasses and a Zegna suit, and a couple in their twenties on what looked like a date. They were playing Pokémon Go, a mobile phone game that's turned into a worldwide phenomenon. If you've seen throngs of people absent-mindedly wandering around with their cell phones at chest height, chances are you've come across some

Pokémon Go players. And based on the unprecedented popularity of this game, you might even be one of those players. Whether you're a Pokémon master, or just wondering what all the fuss is about, Modern Mississauga has you covered. For the newbies, we've got an overview of what the game is and why it's so popular; for the experts, we've got tips, tricks, and some of the best Pokémon hunting grounds in Mississauga.

WHAT IS POKÉMON GO? Pokémon Go is a mobile phone game where you catch, train, and battle creatures known as Pokémon. What makes this game unique is that it can't really be played at home; because it uses your phone's GPS and location data, it requires you to go out into the world to find these Pokémon and gather the tools (known as Pokéballs) needed to catch them.

HOW MUCH DOES POKÉMON GO COST? Pokémon Go is free to play, but you can purchase in-game items to give yourself some advantages and make the game a little easier.

WHAT ARE SOME BENEFITS TO PLAYING POKÉMON GO? The number one benefit is that it gets you out of the house and walking around. Not only will you be getting some exercise, but you might discover parts of your neighbourhood that you didn't even know existed!

WHAT ARE SOME DOWNSIDES TO POKÉMON GO? There have been reports of people trespassing into dangerous areas, videos of car accidents involving Pokémon Go players (don't play and drive!), and a number of other instances that mainly boil down to people going where they shouldn't or otherwise not paying attention. There have also been complaints that the sheer number of Pokémon Go players concentrated in certain areas, like Central Park in New York or the Jack Layton Ferry Terminal in Toronto, are impeding the local flow of traffic and hindering normal operations.

POKÉMON GO GLOSSARY

Real Life

Can’t tell the difference between a PokéStop and a Pokéball? Don't worry, we've got you covered. Here's a helpful glossary!

POKÉSTOPS Blue stands, usually local landmarks, that give out resources (Pokéballs, potions, etc.) to aid you in your Pokémon hunt. These turn purple when used, and refresh in around five minutes. LURES These can be placed at PokéStops and will attract more Pokémon to that location for 30 minutes. POKÉBALLS

Throw these at Pokémon to catch them.

In - Game

EGGS & INCUBATORS Sometimes, you'll find Eggs at PokéStops. If you put these in an Incubator, you can hatch Pokémon just by walking around! Eggs hatch after walking 2 KM, 5 KM, or 10 KM depending on the egg. The higher KM eggs usually contain rarer Pokémon.

GYMS You can "battle" other Pokémon here, or leave one of your own Pokémon to be battled. Leaving your Pokémon at a Gym lets you collect 10 coins and some Stardust for every 21 hours that you "hold" a gym. You can then use these coins to buy items (such as Egg Incubators) at the in-game store. STARDUST

You can use Stardust and Candies to make your Pokémon stronger, which will help with Gym battles.

CANDIES - You get Candy by catching, hatching, or transferring unwanted Pokémon out of your inventory. Each Pokémon has their own unique Candy, which can be used to evolve them or power them up (along with Stardust).

14 MODERN MISSISSAUGA | LATE SUMMER 2016

6 TIPS FOR POKÉMON MASTERS

This section isn’t for the beginners. This is for people looking to take their Pokémon Go game to the next level. Do you want to be the very best - like no one ever was in Mississauga? Then check out the tips below!

BRING EXTRA BATTERIES Pokémon Go eats cell phone batteries for breakfast. I've seen a phone go from 100% to 50% in less than half an hour of playing, so it's wise to use a battery case or bring one of those portable USB batteries on your journey.

HUNT IN PACKS Pokémon Go is much more fun in groups. Wandering the city with another person helps pass the time, and the thrill of the hunt is infectious - seeing other people excited about a rare catch lets you share in their joy, and it never hurts to have a second set of eyes (and legs) looking for Pokémon.

USE LUCKY EGGS WISELY Lucky Eggs give you double XP for 30 minutes, and you don't get many of them for free, so you should make those minutes count. Evolving a Pokémon normally nets you between 500 and 1000 XP, so hold off on evolving for as long as you can, then do a bunch when you activate a lucky egg. If you're quick, you can usually complete 30-40 evolutions before the timer runs out.

m oder n TEC HNO LOGY

GET THE BEST BANG FOR YOUR BUCK Pokémon Go is free to play, and in my opinion, most of the items in the store aren't worth buying. The one exception here is Egg Incubators. Depending on where you live, hatching eggs may be your best/only shot at acquiring certain rare Pokémon. Additionally, you only have 9 egg slots in your inventory, which means you can't get any more eggs until some of them are hatched. Last and perhaps most importantly, hatching eggs requires you to walk long distances while things like Lures require you to be stationary (near a PokéStop), so Incubators are the best way to keep fit and have fun!

CATCH 'EM ALL You may think you have enough Pidgeys and Weedles, but all Pokémon you catch will still net you some experience and Stardust, which you need to power up your lil' guys. Also, Pidgeys only need 12 Candies to evolve, so you can save them up, evolve a bunch at once and net a ton of XP in conjunction with a Lucky Egg. (This advice doesn't apply to Drowzees, which are a plague on the GTA, and require 50 Candies to evolve)

LOCATION, LOCATION, LOCATION

The absolute best spot in the city for Pokémon hunting is the area in and around Celebration Square. There are dozens of PokéStops and almost always an active lure. There are always other players around, which I find makes me feel more comfortable. And here's a secret for the true Pokémon master - there are power outlets built into the ground at Community Common Park, just across from the Second Cup at the corner of Living Arts and Princess Royal Drive, which means you can bring a charger and play for as long as you want! My second-favourite spot is Streetsville, in and around the Village Square area. Lots of PokéStops (usually with lures in them), umbrellas for shade on those hot sunny days, and benches every few feet so you don't have to stop in the middle of the sidewalk to get that perfect Pokéball throw. Plus, it's just a nice area to walk around and have a coffee or a bite to eat. One of the worst spots is inside Square One (which does have a few PokéStops and Gyms), because your phone will struggle to find a GPS signal, making it tough to hit certain stops and messing with your KM counter for egg hatching. You should also try to avoid secluded, heavily wooded areas - no amount of Pokéballs are worth the number of bug bites, trust me.

As with real estate, location is one of the most important elements of Pokémon Go.

On the shores of gorgeous Georgian Bay in Collingwood is where you’ll find Cranberry Village, a resort that’s less than 90 minutes from Mississauga and aims to help guests rejuvenate their body, mind and spirit. 16 MODERN MISSISSAUGA | LATE SUMMER 2016

by jay kana | photo courtesy of Living Water Resort There are plenty of activities and amenities offered, including sailing and boating trips, lakeside dining, the Living Shore Spa, a spectacular championship golf course, bicycle rentals, hiking trails, and that unmistakable waterfront backdrop. This year-round resort is a great escape for when you need a few Zen moments to relax and recharge. While they’ve earned a reputation for being the go-to destination for vacations and weekend getaways, they’re also a premier destination for weddings, meetings and conferences. There are three distinct offerings for your functions that are laid out to offer a positive and refreshed break between sessions.

&

S P A

It’s not a “rush here, rush there” atmosphere. Rather, Cranberry Village is situated where you can enjoy fresh air, views of the water, and a calmer, more serene environment, revitalizing you for your next session, whatever it may be. The Bear Estate is the only waterfront venue in the area and boasts floor to ceiling windows allowing the natural light to pour in, and giving you a view of the willow trees for a truly inspiring setting. Enjoy relaxing roof top yoga, engage in great conversation beneath the majestic willow trees, or revitalize through the eight Aquapath treatments in their new Living Shore Spa. If you’re looking to say “I do” at a waterfront setting or give an inspired speech to your team, this one-of-a-kind local

venue is perfect and holds up to 220 guests. The Atoka House at the Cranberry Golf Resort is a short, refreshing walk from Bear Estate and sits beside the first hole of the resort’s golf course. It offers cathedral ceilings, a panoramic view of the Niagara Escarpment, and large windows and skylights that open up the room nicely. The venue holds 80 and offers an intimate setting for those looking for a small yet mighty venue. On the conventional side, the William Watts room offers a traditional ballroom setting, a private lobby, and continues with

Cranberry Village’s pattern of large windows in the crush space. All three rooms were designed to allow guests to enjoy the natural light, to become inspired and give inspiration to others, and to envelop themselves and those around them in the natural surrounding settings. Living Water Resort’s facilities have been used by several corporate clients, including CIBC, BMW, Porsche, and Cooperators Insurance, all of whom have had memorable experiences, and the word is spreading about this inspiring waterside meeting facility

that’s great for team building. Speaking with owner Larry Law, he explains that Cranberry Village offers venues that “allow you to invest in your family, friends and colleagues to own a moment and create lifelong memories through harmonizing together and appreciating the people around you as well as inspiring yourself and others.” We couldn’t have said it better ourselves, Larry.

18 MODERN MISSISSAUGA | LATE SUMMER 2016

On the shores of picturesque Georgian Bay and the 30,000 Islands in Pointe au Baril is where you’ll find one of Ontario’s most beautiful places - Pleasant Cove Resort. This year-round resort offers the best of cottage country, from quaint cottages on the water to a top notch fishing destination and a stellar location for any type of vacation getaway. Laura and I recently spent a weekend there as we were overdue for a getaway, and seeing as it’s only a two and a half hour drive from the city, it was an easy decision to make. We arrived at the four-star resort on a Friday night and found our way to a terrific one-bedroom ultra-deluxe cottage, complete with a full kitchen set up, including a BBQ by the front door, which we thoroughly utilized. Walking through the spacious room revealed a full bathroom, couch, and my favourite - a rear deck enclosed with a screen to keep those pesky mosquitos away. We had a couple of meals on the deck, admired the view, and were bite-free. For those travelling with families, friends or colleagues, there are two, three and four bedroom cottages available that are fully equipped, complete with housekeeping services, all close to the water and amenities. Owner Bruce Bishop has had Pleasant Cove in the family for over four decades and his dedication to make this one of the best cottage destinations in the area is definitely paying off.

After sleeping in a very comfortable bed and enjoying a lazy morning, we took a two-hour boat ride on Saturday with Bruce and a couple of other guests in Georgian Bay and learned about the rich history of the area and how it’s evolved over the years. We passed the famous Ojibway Club and cross in memory of Samuel de Champlain in our travels while Bruce navigated the Bay as only an expert could. Once back, we quickly ventured to the convenience store to get some groceries and returned to make full use of the on-site BBQ. From there, we took a very short walk to the pool which overlooks the Bay and basked in all of the natural beauty, sun, and laid back atmosphere. The beauty of Pleasant Cove is that there’s the option to have full ownership as well as to rent cottages, which is a rare find these days as usually it’s one or the other. And given that Pleasant Cove comes with a breathtaking, gorgeous setting, owning a piece of paradise is definitely attainable. There are bonfires at night on the beach or a bit higher up by the pool, a hot tub, tennis courts, walking trails, sauna, basketball

courts and another favourite - kayaks and canoes - in addition to boat rentals. It’s easy to spend an entire weekend on the premises and find a balance between being active and relaxing. If you’re the extra active type, there are a host of attractions all within a short drive. We spent Saturday afternoon driving around the neighbouring area full of winding roads as the sun lowered beneath the horizon (the auto journalist in me had to do it), then spent some time in kayaks and barbecued dinner before we called it a night. Wrapping up on Sunday morning, Laura and I spent a bit more time at the pool and back in the kayaks, as well as on the beach (the water is absolutely beautiful!) before heading home. It’s in their nature to provide a memorable experience for any type of group, from a couple’s getaway to large family reunions and everything in between. A beautiful attraction any time of year, Pleasant Cove Resort balances the outdoorsy, adventurous side with the practical amenities of a fully furnished cottage and a relaxing, cottage country experience, all just over two hours away.

INFINITI Q50 I remember how excited my mother was when she upgraded her 2000 Maxima to a beautiful 2011 Infiniti G37. A very modest woman, she’s spent her life constantly taking care of others and in my opinion, not taking enough care of herself. When the time came to hand the Maxima off to my kid brother, Josh, the G37 captured her eye as it was time for her to tote around town in something comfortable, luxurious and powerful. It’s now five years later, and she still loves her G37. In 2014, the “G” moniker changed to “Q” (it is just a name, I suppose), but the biggest change is here in the 2016 offering. Three all-new engines are offered in the 2016 Infiniti Q50 lineup and there’s certainly

something for everyone, including the carryover hybrid powertrain. The effective 3.7 L V6 328 horsepower motor, a staple of the Nissan/Infiniti lineup for several years, is gone and in its place are three new options. On the lower end of the power spectrum is a 2.0L turbocharged four-cylinder engine producing 208 horsepower and 258 lb-ft. of torque. If you’re looking for more power and to really get that balance of performance and luxury, you’ll opt for the 3.0L turbocharged V6 motor, churning out a healthy 300 horsepower balanced with 295 lb-ft. of torque. Then there’s a special “Red Sport” trim that uses the same 3.0L engine but is tuned for 400 horsepower and 350 lb-ft. of toque.

All engine choices are threaded through a seven-speed automatic gearbox with manual shift mode and downshift rev matching and an intelligent all-wheel drive system. The mid-cycle refreshed 2016 Q50 was given to me with the 3.0L engine to test drive and I came away quite impressed. The acceleration is swift with very little turbo lag as you climb into higher speeds. The available Direct Active Steering technology, the world’s first digital steering system, provides an incredibly precise steering feel for the driver and makes adjustments as you drive for an optimized driving experience. The system is capable of making hundreds of steering adjustments in real time, resulting in a clearer drive as far as road conditions

technology) featuring an eight-inch screen on top for navigation and a seven-inch below for your audio, climate, settings, etc. There are also climate buttons flanking the bottom screen and primary audio functions beneath it. There’s a rotary dial behind the gear shifter to help navigate the touchscreen options as well if you’re not a fan of fingerprints. Safety wise, there’s a full suite of available options, including Blind Spot Warning, Around View Monitor, Forward Emergency Braking, Lane Departure Warning, Intelligent Cruise Control and several others. There are plenty of packages available on the option sheet to enhance your Infiniti experience as well. In an ever-competitive market of luxury sedans, Infiniti’s 2016 Q50 with three new engine choices coupled with a beautiful, athletic exterior and a well-appointed interior will certainly appeal to the marketplace. Expect the 300 horsepower 3.0L engine to be the popular seller here as it blends power, precision and pure driving enjoyment. With an MSRP of about $46,000 for the 3.0L trim, you’ll certainly be getting plenty of bang for your buck. Even my mother would approve.

There’s plenty of customization available via drive modes, including Personal, Sport +, Sport, Normal, Eco, and Snow, so you’re well covered for your drive preferences. Handling and cornering scored well with me and the combination of raw power and Infiniti’s renowned handling came shining through. Inside, the cabin remains as luxurious as ever with oh-so comfortable standard heated seats, comfortable three-spoke heated steering wheel, a roomy feel, and a truly upscale atmosphere. Premium materials are used throughout and provide a modern, high end finish for the Q50. The center console is one of the best in the industry, with dual touchscreens (Infiniti InTouch

ONE TANK TRIP: HIKING THE BRUCE TRAIL by jennifer merrick | photos courtesy of jennifer merrick Hiking all 885 kilometres of the Bruce Trail is on my bucket list. As it is Ontario’s longest and oldest foot path, running from Queenston in Niagara to Tobermory at the tip of the Bruce Peninsula, I have no interest in doing it all in one go (the average end-to-end hiker can finish in 30 days). Nor do I have any chance of breaking any records (10 days, 13 hours, 57 minutes is the fastest). I’d simply like to leisurely explore this UNESCO world biosphere famed for its glacially sculpted, rugged limestone and rich ecosystem, one scenic section at a time. This summer, I fully intended to hike one of the trail’s most dramatic stretches from Tobermory to Lion’s Head. Located 270 kilometres northwest of Mississauga, both small towns are situated on the peninsula that divides Georgian Bay and Lake Huron. But even the best-laid travel plans don’t always materialize, and our four-day hike needed to be cut in half. Not only that, a section of the trail near Tobermory had been rerouted onto a main road, considerably less appealing than hiking on the escarpment. But all was not lost. Thanks to our knowledgeable and gracious hosts at Taylor-Made Bed & Breakfast, we spent a fabulous 48 hours exploring both lesser-known and more popular sections of the Bruce Trail.

LION’S HEAD

WHAT’S A ONE TANK TRIP? It’s a worthwhile destination within a tank of gas radius of Mississauga.

22 MODERN MISSISSAUGA | LATE SUMMER 2016

After visiting Lion’s Head on a hiking trip, Diana Licskai and Doug Kennedy decided to move here. “When we went into town on a Friday night and only three cars passed us,” said Diana, “we knew it was the place for us.” Serendipitously, the B&B they had been staying at was for sale, and the rest, as they say, is history. The majority of their guests are hikers, and about 20 percent come from overseas, Germany in particular. What is their reaction to the scenery here? “They are blown away,” says Doug. “They are used to lots of other walkers and fences that stop hikers from getting too close to the natural attractions, and there’s none of that here.” Though it’s much closer to home for us, we were blown away, too. Our Bruce Trail hike in the Lion’s Head Provincial Nature Reserve took us through an ever-changing escarpment landscape. One minute we were standing atop of 300-foot cliffs looking down at the turquoise waters of Georgian Bay, and the next minute we were rambling through a cool, dark forest with massive moss-covered boulders and every shade of green imaginable. What astounded us the most, however, was that we saw but one lone hiker in the first two hours. Later on, there were a few more people out and about (though it was still blissfully uncrowded), especially near the Pothole and Giant Cauldron side trails, which as their names suggest, highlight the region’s distinctive sink holes and caves. We would have loved to explore more but after six hours on the trail, the only place our wobbly legs would take us was back to the vehicle. We had been dropped off at a different entry point by Diana that morning, taking advantage of the ferrying service the B&B provides their guests for $0.65/km. Transportation to this nearby hike was a very reasonable $7.15. As part of the home-to-home network, they also work with four other B&Bs that can arrange travel and even ferry luggage from inn to inn depending on your hiking plans. After enjoying a meal on the outdoor patio at Lion’s Head Inn, we crashed at a ridiculously early hour to rest up for our next day’s adventure in Bruce Peninsula National Park and nearby Tobermory.

BRUCE PENINSULA NATIONAL PARK With 248 campsites, 10 yurts, swimming beaches, and varied hiking paths that include the Bruce Trail, this national park is one of the most popular spots on the peninsula. The star attraction of the 38,000-acre wilderness area is the Grotto, an easy 30-minute walk along the scenic Cypress Trail from the parking lot. Though we didn’t explore the underwater cave ourselves, we climbed the rocks and watched other brave souls do just that. The emerald water and the shoreline resemble a panorama you might see on a Caribbean postcard; however unlike tropical locales, the water here is considerably colder! Though the Grotto and Indian Head Cove next to it are the busiest areas of the park, there was a lot more to explore. We found ourselves back on the Bruce Trail, where we came across Boulder Beach, a shore covered with large white rocks bulldozed here by glaciers 450 million years ago. Once again we were awed by the wonders of the escarpment.

CHOOSE YOUR FLIGHT PLAN.

TOBERMORY A good hike deserves a reward, and we got ours at the Tobermory Brewing Company in the form of a brewed-on-the-premises lager and the best meal of the trip. On the patio, we watched the comings and goings of this cheerful lakeside town: glass-bottom boats on the way to sightseeing excursions to Flowerpot Island; diving outfitters off to explore the over 20 shipwrecks found here; and the large Chi-Cheemaun ferry loading passengers headed to Manitoulin Island, the biggest freshwater island in North America and one of my absolute favorite spots in Ontario. But I’ll leave that for another day as I still have a lot of hiking to do on the Bruce Trail. If I continue at this rate, I should be done in say, 2070.

DESTINATION PARKS The city of Mississauga describes “Destination Parks” as “…special places where visitors can see beautiful flowers, hike or cycle on beautiful trails with towering trees, enjoy a picnic by the lake or play in the spray pad.” Each of these parks has something unique to offer, whether it’s special photography sites, notable wildlife and foliage, natural ice rinks, skateboard facilities, and much more. These are some of our favourite “Destination Parks” in Mississauga.

Enersource Applauds Local ‘Conservation Heroes’

Mississauga’s local electricity distribution company is recognizing local businesses that have demonstrated leadership and vision to reduce their environmental footprint. In a new feature called ‘Conservation Heroes’ which appears on the Enersource website, the first company to be recognized is Mother Parkers Tea & Coffee Inc. Over the last 100 years, the Mississauga-based company has grown from its humble beginnings to produce over 8-billion cups of coffee and 2-billion cups of tea per year.

Operations. He took the lead on the company-wide initiative to find ways to improve efficiencies. He began by reaching out to local utilities – electricity, natural gas and water – to find out if there were any available conservation programs. The response was overwhelmingly positive. “There are more opportunities for companies to reduce their environmental footprint than people realize,” says Khan. “Sometimes it just takes a phone call to the different utility companies in your area.”

With ever-increasing demand for product, the company is considered a large energy consumer. Despite their high consumption, Mother Parkers is quickly becoming known as one of Mississauga’s most energy-efficient companies. Upon visiting their Corporate Head Office, one is greeted with the aroma of roasting coffee and a brightly lit office space. The mood is purposeful and energetic, as lightemitting diode (LED) technology illuminates the workplace. For Mother Parkers, finding the right lighting was one of the most critical factors in creating a culture of conservation. Initially installed in 2014 to support the company’s safety protocols, the new lighting became recognized for its energy reduction benefits. This began a shift in the mindset of Mother Parkers’ staff, and they began to seek greater ways to reduce the company’s overall environmental footprint. Mississauga-based Adrian Khan is the Environmental Health and Safety Manager for Mother Parkers’ Canadian

Mother Parkers staff use an LED monitor to see where and how energy is being consumed at the company’s Mississauga plant.

Mother Parkers began working with Enersource for electricity conservation ideas and opportunities to participate in energy reduction initiatives. Within a year, Mother Parkers converted all of its Mississauga-based facilities from the standard 1000 W and 400 W metal halide lighting found in most warehouses, to LED technology that is brighter, lasts longer and uses a fraction of the electricity. The company also installed occupancy sensors, which turn on the lights only when motion is detected.

A D VE R T O R I AL Their coffee grinders were reduced from three units to two high-efficiency models. Air compressors were replaced with more efficient models, including a variable speed unit to adjust the compressed air output as needed. Through these initiatives, Mother Parkers reduced their yearly electricity consumption by nearly 1.7-million kWh. That’s enough electricity to power 170 homes for an entire year.

which will further reduce energy consumption and improve the comfort of workers. Water consumption was also reduced by 42,000 cubic meters with the installation of an open loop chilling system to cool heated equipment. That’s enough water for about 350 people for a year. These energy efficiency measures are being recognized throughout Mississauga, as more companies want to learn about Mother Parkers’ processes and best practices. “As a society, we have a duty to the community and to future generations to find ways that are more environmentally friendly in the way business is conducted,” says Khan, “Fortunately, at Mother Parkers we have been able to connect our commitment to safety with our approach to environmental stewardship. This results in our company being safer and more environmentally responsible.”

An old photo showing the transition from metal halide lighting (on the left) to new LED technology (on the right).

To reduce natural gas consumption, Mother Parkers replaced an old, inefficient roaster with a newer model. They took steps to better manage roasting capabilities, eliminating the need to have the roaster on all the time. Through these initiatives, Mother Parkers reduced their annual gas consumption by 1.5-million cubic meters per year. That’s enough natural gas to power over 550 homes for a year. In the near future, the company is planning to use excess heat generated by the roasters to warm the truck loading bay,

While Mother Parkers has made great strides in reducing their environmental footprint in Mississauga, they are far from done. Building on existing successes, Mother Parkers has many plans to improve their efficiencies even further. Enersource applauds Mother Parkers for being one of Mississauga’s ‘Conservation Heroes’. Building A Website by bil kanawati Every business needs a website. Whether you're a one-woman freelance operation or a business employing hundreds of people, one of the first ways people will interact with you is through your presence on the internet. That's why it's important to put your best foot forward, and have a professional website that's beautiful, functional, and easy to use on any device phone, tablet, laptop, or desktop. Of course, your options for creating a website are as vast as the internet itself, and it's easy to be overwhelmed by the choices available. That's why we've narrowed it down to two (more or less) paths that will both get you where you need to be, albeit with very different approaches. If you're thinking of coding a website by hand, you might as well be chiseling HTML onto a stone tablet - it's possible, but not recommended. These days, you'll want to use what's known as a CMS - a Content Management System - to build and design your website, and the two most popular options are Squarespace and WordPress.

30 MODERN MISSISSAUGA | LATE SUMMER 2016

SQUARESPACE A BEAUTIFUL WALLED GARDEN If you're the type of person who wants an all-in-one solution with an absolute minimum amount of fuss, you want Squarespace. Squarespace combines an incredibly user-friendly CMS with rock-solid web hosting for as low as $8 a month (USD). They have templates geared to specific types of businesses (like restaurants and musicians), or specific use cases (like portfolios for freelancers), and the templates are easily customizable with drag-and-drop tools that let you put your own individual stamp on your website. All their templates are built with responsive design in mind, meaning your website will be optimized for any size screen, from a smartphone all the way up to a giant desktop monitor. Squarespace has tons of great video tutorials and articles to help you get started, and if you run into trouble, they also offer 24/7 online support. Because they control the CMS and the hosting, you never have to worry about plugins or software updates or compatibility issues - they handle all that stuff for you. Squarespace's strengths are also its weaknesses. Because it's an all-in-one platform, you're not free to shop around for a cheaper hosting solution - it's one price for CMS and hosting together. Also, you're limited to only the features and templates that

Squarespace offers, with no option to add 3rd party plugins for additional functionality and customization. They do offer a developer platform for advanced users, but once you're on it, you cut yourself off from updates and most support options: basically, it's a "use at your own risk" option. Otherwise, trying to take even a single step outside their walled garden involves an arcane series of code injections that may or may not actually work, and is strongly discouraged. That said, the overwhelming majority of people will be more than happy with what Squarespace offers and won't have any desire to push the boundaries. WORDPRESS A POWERFUL OPEN PLATFORM If you're willing to get your hands dirty and you want the ability to tinker and customize to your heart's content, WordPress is the web building solution for you. WordPress is arguably the most popular CMS in the world, and it has two major points in its favour: it's an open platform - which means anyone can build WordPress-compatible tools, templates, and plugins - and it's completely free to use. Your WordPress site can be as simple or as complex as you want, and with thousands of customizations to choose from, you can endlessly tweak your site until it's exactly the way you want it.

Because WordPress is so popular, there's a wealth of information on the internet to help you get up and running, with plenty of YouTube tutorials and "how-to" guides from actual WordPress users. When most people talk about WordPress, they're referring to self-hosted WordPress, which means that unlike Squarespace (which combines CMS and hosting), you'll have to shop around for your own web host. On the upside, this is almost universally cheaper than Squarespace. On the downside, there's a lot of variability between hosts when

it comes to speed, reliability, uptime, etc. That's where we start getting into the "problems with WordPress" section, which sees its strengths become its weaknesses just like with Squarespace. The other side of the "infinite options" coin is infinite variation in consistency and reliability, from "rocksolid" to "absolutely unusable." When you're an open platform, anyone can develop a tool or plugin, of any level of quality. Some 3rd party customizations may not be compatible with other ones, and if you try to load them together, they could slow down or seriously

break your site. You’ll also need to be on top of any updates and patches to any plugins you use as well as the WordPress CMS itself. There's also a much steeper learning curve that comes with having so many options. After taking everything into consideration, both of these great options will get you what you need - a functioning website but whether you choose the safe, beautiful confines of Squarespace or the powerful yet oft-confusing open world of WordPress is ultimately up to you.

by eileen mackenzie The fourth annual Dancing with Mississauga Stars will be held on Friday November 4, 2016 at the Mississauga Convention Centre and it’s a fundraising gala like no other! Each year, community-minded corporate executives take on the challenge to learn one ballroom dance which they will perform at the gala, all while raising pledges to help support the Community Foundation of Mississauga and their work of building a strong, vital Mississauga where everyone has a chance to thrive. Afterward, the scores are tallied and one Star will be awarded a custom made “mirror ball” trophy. The gala night also features professional ballroom dancers, an amazing four-course dinner, gorgeous décor and then at the end of the evening, guests will have the chance to dance the rest of the night away. Eemcees for the evening are Francis D’Souza, City TV and Marivel Taruc, CBC host of Our Toronto. Tickets are $200 per person and corporate tables as well as sponsorships are available. MODERN

ENTREPRENEUR: ANTHONY CARELLI by jay kana

34 MODERN MISSISSAUGA | EARLY SUMMER 2016

It’s been an exciting, four-decade long worldwide adventure that’s come full circle for Mississauga-born and raised entrepreneur and professional athlete Anthony Carelli. With his early years spent at Cawthra and Atwater, his family moved to the Rathwood Park area in the early ‘80s and have planted deep roots within the community - and his parents, in fact, are still there. I spent some time with Carelli at his state-of-the-art training facility, Battle Arts Academy (BAA) at Tomken and Eglinton, to learn more about his entrepreneurial journey. Holding a black-belt in judo for nearly 30 years, as well as being a former professional wrestler for World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) for nearly a decade certainly doesn’t come by accident. Carelli says of his initial interest in judo and wrestling, “When I was a kid, two things were really popular; Kung Fu movies and pro wrestling on the weekends. I was fascinated with both and had a feeling I was destined for martial arts…I felt the calling of my warrior spirit, so I begged my mom to put in some kind of martial art, which happened to be judo because it was the one that fit her schedule.” And what a great decision it was. He quickly fell in love with the sport and ended up a national and provincial champion while majoring in Geography and minoring in Exercise Science at Concordia University. Full of resiliency, he came in second place four times before he actually won. He “connected with his destiny” in university and entered the long yet rewarding road to professional wrestling, where he used his mixed martial arts training to catapult his career. Carelli credits former pro wrestler Don Kolov for guiding him and helping him achieve success in the WWE. During his training, he spent a year in Japan and connected and aggressively trained with the original owner of Battle Arts and Master Instructor, Yuki Ishikawa, who’s with him today at BAA. To make a famous long story short, he got signed by WWE and became a successful, popular character as Santino Marella who won multiple championships. After three neck surgeries, Carelli officially retired from the WWE in the summer of 2016 to devote all of his time to growing BAA and his family. In 2011, Carelli got the idea of opening BAA while still in the WWE as he wanted something to transition into once his pro wrestling days were over. Approaching 40 and with his neck not what it used to be, he wanted something semi-established once he retired instead of starting from scratch again. After nearly two years of meticulous planning, he officially opened the doors in September 2013. The first couple of years were tough, as he was still with the WWE and he had BAA back home that also needed his attention. But as a true entrepreneur, he found a way to make it happen.

m oder nMONE Y

By opening BAA, Carelli’s goal is to “be a fixture in the community for kids to learn about wrestling, judo and boxing as well as represent Mississauga. I love the domino effect of inspiration where if I can inspire one kid, he inspires two other kids and so on. I want to help others become successful, acknowledged and represent Mississauga.” I asked why he chose Mississauga for BAA and he proudly stated, “if there was a global lottery and the grand prize was being able to grow up and live in the best place in the world, Mississauga is that place.” The past three years have seen an expansion of offerings with a focus on judo and wrestling because Carelli wants to be able to teach and engage with his students in the avenues that he’s an expert in. He believes in the hands-on approach where he can inspire and teach others through his many experiences. With a few hundred members already, the offerings range from personal training and boxing to weight loss training and judo, with several in between. He also has a full kitchen in house where he can teach others how to prepare a simple, cost effective and delicious athlete’s meal. His biggest obstacle in launching BAA (and in true entrepreneurial form) was learning how to delegate to others. He knew what he wanted to do and how to do it and figured that he could do it all on his own. Over time, he’s changed his approach and now has a tremendous, educated and experienced staff who work quite well together and allow him to focus on bigger picture items. “We have an all-star coaching staff,” Carelli beams.

What helps set BAA apart from other fitness offerings is that his team is there to educate you and help you understand how your body works, as well as how to get the most out of your body. At other places, you can spend a lifetime showing up and not learning anything and simply go through the motions. He cites one of his biggest accomplishments as being contacted by the Venezuelan Olympic team who wanted to train at BAA for two weeks prior the 2015 PanAm Games. That’s in addition to the satisfaction he gets from seeing a gym full of members participating in various activities, knowing that he’s making a difference in the community. After only three years, Carelli’s custom-built dream facility has been very well received by the community and is constantly seeing new members. His intuitive business sense, welcoming approach and dedication to helping others have rewarded him well and he proudly says, “everything we do, we do extremely well.” You just may end up seeing some of his students end up on WWE in a few years or even competing at a provincial and or national level for judo and boxing. For someone who’s done so much in a short amount of time, the best is yet to come for our hometown celebrity. He’s constantly seeking ways to improve the already successful facility and its offerings and also exploring the world of Canadian media with the goal of one day having a national talk show. Whatever the future holds, Anthony Carelli (Mr. Saga as per his customized license plate) is definitely ready for it.

WHAT TO ASK YOUR CONTRACTOR Starting a construction project of any size can be stressful. To alleviate some of this stress, it's important to get to know your contractor. Here are the top 10 questions you should ask your contractor before signing the deal.

1) ARE YOU INSURED? Contractor insurance not only protects the contractor, but it also protects you, the home owner. Should something go wrong during construction, the last thing you want is for you or your insurance company to be on the hook.

2) DO YOU EMPLOY SUB-TRADES? First, you have the right to know who will have access to your home during construction. Secondly, you have the right to know if the sub-trades working on your project have the appropriate licenses.

3) ARE YOUR TRADES LICENSED? A lot of people say they can wire a stove or relocate plumbing, but without an appropriate license, they may not be the best person for the job. Licensed professionals are highly skilled and trained to take on the specific task and can legally be held accountable for any errors.

4) WHAT KIND OF WARRANTY DO YOU PROVIDE? A good

36 MODERN MISSISSAUGA | EARLY SUMMER 2016

contractor will proudly stand by their work and as such would be willing to guarantee it in writing, but watch out for guarantees that seem too good to be true - they likely are. Always read the fine print.

5) DOES THIS WORK REQUIRE A PERMIT? Permits can be complicated - they can increase costs and cause delays in the project. However, by getting the necessary permits for your project, you will have peace of mind knowing that the project will be completed properly and legally. Illegal construction can result in work-stoppages, fines, and even the homeowner being financially responsible for returning the home to its original state.

6) HOW WILL WE COMMUNICATE? Open lines of communication are key to getting the job done on time and on budget. It also ensures that you get exactly what you are expecting from your contractor. A communication schedule should be agreed upon from the start. This should include daily updates via phone or email and a weekly walk through.

7) HOW CAN YOU BE REACHED AFTER HOURS? Hopefully, you'll never need it, but it is a good idea to have a 24hr contact should an emergency arise. Delayed reaction to a serious emergency can result in thousands of dollars worth of damage.

by marko furlani

8) HOW DO YOU HANDLE CHANGES? Changes happen, and they can hold up a project and increase costs. All change requests should be accompanied by a written agreement and signed by both parties. A well-written contract will have a clause covering change orders.

9) CAN I HAVE THAT IN WRITING? It is in your best interest to work with a contractor who will provide a written contract. The contract protects both you and the contractor and provides specific details pertaining to the project. Read the contract, do not be afraid to ask questions, and never sign until you are completely satisfied.

10) CAN YOU PROVIDE REFERENCES? Do not skip this step! Protect yourself by asking past clients about their experience with the contractor. Make sure you are given no less then 3 references from projects completed in the past 6 months. You don't have to follow up with all of them, but just knowing the information is available can be reassuring. Be informed and don’t be afraid to ask questions. The most important thing is that you find a contractor that you feel comfortable with. Marko Furlani is the owner and President of Urbanest Construction.

5 FUN WAYS TO WRAP UP

Ah, summer—definitely one of the all-time greatest seasons for making memories with friends. Maybe you went whitewater rafting, or cruised the crystal-blue seas of the Caribbean, or spent a month building hospitals for orphans in East Africa. Or maybe you didn't, because your best pal Craig "must have sent the e-vite to the wrong email." Classic Craig, right? Well, no worries, because there's still plenty of summer left and plenty of things to do around the city. Let's take a look at our Top 5.

1. ESCAPE INTO THE WONDROUS WORLD OF THE POCKET MONSTER From Meadowvale to Port Credit, Malton to Cooksville, PokĂŠmon is Mississauga's hottest craze of 2016. Pikachu, Gobblybag, Marmite, Hobo Rick...who knows what adorable creatures are hiding in our beautiful city's abundant parks and expansive tracts of unoccupied, blistering asphalt? So get out there and "catch them all!"

2. DROWN YOUR SORROW IN GARLIC SAUCE AND TAHINI If you haven't discovered the "Greasy Pearl of the Mediterranean" yet, do yourself a favour! I guarantee you'll "shawarm" right up to it, like Craig did when I tricked him into trying it even though he has an ethical aversion to meat! Boy, that sure was an afternoon to remember! And there's no better place to stuff yourself with the juicy shreds of spinning cocoon-shaped flesh than Streetsville, where shawarma joints outnumber residents 3 to 1. Here are my top 5 picks: 1. Osmow's 2. Harry's Kosher Deli and Shawarma 3. Burrito Boyz* 4. Streetsville Laundromat and Shawarma 5. That place on the corner that changes owners every 6 months and sometimes catches fire *Mexican-style shawarma

3. SPEND THAT HARD-EARNED CASH

Isn't it unforgettable to hang out with your friends and do some shopping? Probably? Honestly, I wouldn't know! In these dark days of vulnerable economies, free-falling dollars, and widespread geopolitical unrest, the most important thing we can do is drop our money on consumable goods. At Mississauga's very own Heartland Town Centre, you can find everything your heart desires, from women's fashion to several other types of women's fashion. Why not buy some cool gifts for your new bestie, Rob from work? Just kidding, just kidding. Just a goof between pals, Craig!

4. LOSE YOURSELF IN THE MYSTERY OF THE "NINE-CROWNED STAR" Legend has it that when Hazel McCallion created Mississauga in 1974, she hid the nine points of the legendary Crowned Star beneath the nine finest strip malls in the city. When reunited, the Star will point the way to a treasure of unimaginable wealth. Wow! What an interesting mystery to solve with friends! It would be really easy to organize over email too, since it's not like I haven't had the same email address for 15 years now!

5. JUST WAIT IT OUT INDOORS You know what, Craig? It's way too hot out there anyway. You go have some sweaty fun with your "real friends" and I'll just stay in, do some "local cable and chill," and wait for climate change to render the planet a scorched, lifeless husk in a summer that never ends. Ha ha, psych! Enjoy the autumn. Love ya, Craig!

MAKE THE MOST

OF YOUR SUMMER EXERCISE by libby noris Summer can fly by, but remember that it does stretch into September! Here in Mississauga, there are programs to fit any age, fitness level and interest. Use the following 6 tips to help you make the most of your summer exercise and activity in the City.

1. Create activity jars.

Don’t miss out on summer opportunities. Create a wish list of activities you want to try and set up activity jars. I like to suggest 3 - one for quick ideas that are in your neighbourhood, one for mid-length ventures, and one for half or full day outings. Get your family or friends involved in creating ideas for each jar. When you have free time, draw an idea!

2. Vary your intensity. High intensity interval training (HIIT) is one of the hottest fitness trends but does come with some cautions. Although these quick workouts are high calorie burners, they are also high stress, so they’re most effective when limited to 2-3 times per week and mixed with other activity. It’s particularly important to monitor your intensity on hot, summer days – even if you’re exercising indoors.

3. Try something new.

Summer is a great time to shake up your regular routine and check out new, fun options for activity and exercise. The City of Mississauga has amazing instructors who teach a broad range of classes from Pilates to Piloxing and Tai Chi to Tabata. There is something for every age and fitness interest with 12 locations offering over 250 classes.

4. Be water wise.

Diving into your local pool can be the best way to get fit and keep cool in the summer. The City of Mississauga has 11 indoor and 7 outdoor pools with a variety of aquatic programs and drop-in swim times along with therapeutic warm water pools, aqua fit classes and aqua cycle!

5. Get fit in fresh air.

In a group or on your own, it’s easy to take your workouts outdoors in Mississauga. Enjoy Sunday morning Yoga at the Village Square in Streetsville or find inspiration at Fresh Air Fitness at Celebration Square on Wednesday evenings with a variety of boot camp, Yoga and Zumba classes. If you prefer an individual workout, check the outdoor exercise circuit at Lake Aquitaine or the bar equipment at Lake Wabukayne.

RELAX

6. Happy trails!

Whether you’re on foot or on wheels, the City of Mississauga has an incredible system of connected trails. You can explore specific areas and stop in scenic sections for a break, or turn it up and make it a more intense workout. Check out mississauga.ca/trails for more information and maps. Summer is an amazing time to explore your City and discover programs and places that help you to keep fit, active and engaged in your community.

EXERCISE Myths vs.Facts by alex cibiri

Many times when beginning to work with a new client, they comment that they feel ‘stuck’ in their fitness. They’ve been putting in effort, but not getting the results they wanted. Why? They’ve been side tracked looking in all the wrong places. Stay out of these three traps and get on your way to the health and fitness you want!

The Magic Pill Ever heard the phrase, “It’s not going to be easy but it’s going to be worth it?” We’re always on the lookout for the easier way, but it’s important to realize that it’s not about the next juice cleanse, 30-day diet book, or 15-minute miracle ab workout. Much like getting your finances in order, a little bit of effort on a regular basis will pay huge dividends in the long run. You need to understand what you’re doing and why its going to help you get closer to your goal. You need to eat better, and exercise regularly. Quick-fix solutions band-aid over your symptoms while distracting you from focusing on addressing your real underlying issues. Sure, your shake plan might help you lose weight over the next two months, but that only helps distract you from addressing the

fact that you hit up the drive-thru on a regular basis. Work with someone who will help you identify the real issues and then help you evaluate and implement potential solutions.

Being Perfect As a society we have this newfound obsession with being perfect. One missed day at the gym or bad decision at mealtime is a sign it’s not the right time or you’re just not cut out for this. In fact, missing a day or a healthy meal not a setback, it’s a learning opportunity. Maybe you’ll realize you need to pack your gym bag before you go to work, or that you shouldn’t go grocery shopping when you’re hungry. Whatever it is, this isn’t an on/off the wagon kind of conversation. This is an “are my actions taking me in the right direction” kind of conversation. Newsflash – none of us are perfect. Some just stick with it longer than others. Work with a coach who will help you learn these things about yourself and help you get set for success in the long term without losing motivation every time there’s a bump in the road.

Lack of Goals

out on a field with a ball…and not having any teams…or nets…and just kicking the ball around for 90 minutes. Doesn’t sound like a lot of fun, does it? What are you trying to achieve? Why is it important to you? Having a goal is what’s going to help you keep your health and fitness a priority when life gets busy, and is even more important when starting your fitness journey. This can be as simple as “I’d like to fit into a size 10 again” or “I sit a lot at work so I’d like to be active 3x a week.” Once you can identify what it is you’d like to achieve, you’re in a much better position to evaluate your success. Remember there is no ‘right’ goal here. The important part is having a goal that is important to you, working towards it regularly, and not getting mired in discouragement when you have an off day. Find a trainer, coach or community that can see these distractions for what they really are and you’ll be well on your way to discovering yourself as the fit person you’ve always wanted to be. As the Baby Boomer generation ages, the population of senior citizens will continue to rise. Today, there are approximately 5.7 million seniors aged 65 and older, and Statistics Canada projects that number to increase to 8.7 million by 2031. Even more pressingly, StatCan expects the amount of seniors aged 80 and older to double within that timeframe. To be sure, fostering independence for seniors will be a challenge, but with Personal Support Workers, maintaining independence is that much easier. e ene S ay n n e en en In Canada as a whole, independence is highly valued for all people. Everyone, no matter their age, should have the right to control their own lives. In this regard, giving seniors the opportunity to retain their independence should be a prerogative based on society’s beliefs alone.

If seniors can stay in their own homes, this decreases the cost, crowdedness, and strain on our provincial long-term care and retirement facilities. And of course, seniors themselves maintain higher self-confidence and self-worth if they can remain independent at home. er na Su r r er A Personal Support Worker offers the perfect medium between a senior remaining safe at home and maintaining their independence. Personal Support Workers can provide services like: bathing, grooming, toileting, meal planning and preparation, medication reminders, escorts to medical appointments/social outings/events and watchful companionship. Every senior has different needs, and a Personal Support Worker can tailor their services for each individual. NOW DELIVERS IN MISSISSAUGA After successfully launching in Toronto, Ottawa, and Edmonton, Uber has brought its meal delivery service, UberEATS, to Mississauga, along with a dedicated UberEATS app that makes ordering food a snap. You can use the app to search for a specific restaurant - most of which didn't offer delivery until UberEATS came along - or you can search for a type of cuisine (e.g. Greek or Indian), and even a specific food (Ce.g. chicken souvlaki). For anyone who's used Uber to get from point A to B, ordering a meal is as simple and convenient as ordering a ride. The experience will be familiar - after you've punched in your address, you'll get an estimate of how long it'll take, and once you've ordered, you can track the driver (and in the case of UberEATS, your meal) via the app to know where they

are and exactly when your food will arrive. That's a huge advantage over most delivery options, where you have no idea when your food is coming or if it's even on its way. And just like with regular Uber, it uses whichever payment method you have stored in the app, so there's no need to fumble with cash or credit cards - you can start enjoying your meal as soon as it arrives. The service is a win-win for both customers and restaurants: you get the convenience of Uber and expanded delivery options that wouldn't otherwise exist, while the restaurant gets a delivery service without having to worry about the logistics. I've been using UberEATS at work, and it's hugely expanded my lunch repertoire. After I started getting deliveries of everything from eggs benedict to pomegranate salad, many of my coworkers hopped on the

UberEATS bandwagon, and none have been disappointed. UberEATS isn't just a lunch thing, either the UberEATS app offers delivery 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, with late night options from several of the nearly 100 participating Mississauga restaurants. Now you can satisfy that midnight shawarma craving without getting out of your pajamas!

To celebrate the Mississauga launch, UberEATS is offering free delivery for a limited time (normally $4.99), but we here at Modern Mississauga want to save you even more money: sign up using the promo code MODERNMISS to get $15 off your first order. There are tons of great menu options under $15, so you could be getting your first meal delivered totally free! MODERN MISSISSAUGA | LATE SUMMER 2016

rosemary roasted beets by alicja parlak My family loved beets! Growing up, we always had beets on the table: puréed beets, pickled beets, beet soup five different ways…you get the idea. Everywhere you looked, there they were! Of course, this was the one vegetable I would never touch. But a couple of years ago, my partner and I were looking for a few new side dishes to add into our usual dinner rotation, and I realized I had never actually tried roasted beets. For some reason, those never made it to the family dinner table back then. So, I resolved to give beets another chance. After a few inedible creations, it turned out that the key to making roasted beets was just to keep things simple. This dish is very easy to throw together, and it allows the sweet earthy taste of the beets to shine through.

INGREDIENTS

4 red beets 4 golden beets 1 small bunch fresh rosemary 1 tbsp. olive oil sea salt and cracked pepper to taste

DIRECTIONS

1. Trim the ends and stems from the beets. Peel and cut into cubes. 2. In a bowl, combine beets and olive oil and season well with salt and pepper. Roughly cut in the rosemary leaves, and mix. 3. Transfer to your favourite baking dish and bake in a 400ºF oven for approximately 35 - 40 minutes. Roasting time will vary slightly, depending on the size of the beet cubes and your oven. It’s as simple as that. Try it out! Maybe, like me, you’ll find yourself bringing beets to your table a little more often.

THAI INSPIRED ZUCCHINI NOODLES by samantha briann Prep Time – 25 minutes, serves 2-4 people This colourful raw dish is packed with nutritious value and lip-licking taste. It makes a great side feature or even a main course for lunch or dinner. The cool and creamy peanut sauce is perfect for a Summer gathering and is sure to be a crowd pleaser! With a prep time of 25 minutes it’s definitely my go-to recipe for the days it’s just too hot to turn on the oven. INGREDIENTS FOR THE ZUCCHINI NOODLE BLEND

• 3 medium zucchinis, peeled and spiralized (thin) • 2 medium Granny Smith apples, peeled and cut into cube-like pieces • 1 1/2 cups of carrots, shredded • 2 cups of red cabbage, chopped • The juice of half a lemon (optional) INGREDIENTS FOR THE PEANUT SAUCE

• 1/2 cup of smooth peanut butter • 1/4 cup tahini

• • • •

1 cup coconut milk 1/4 tsp. ginger, grated 2 tsp. raw honey 1/4 tsp. Himalayan salt (fine)

GARNISHES

• 2 tbsp. roasted sesame seeds (olive oil will be needed for roasting) • 4 tbsp. crushed peanuts • Lime wedges DIRECTIONS FOR THE ZUCCHINI NOODLE BLEND

1. Add the zucchini noodles into a large salad bowl and combine with the Granny Smith apples, carrots, and red cabbage. 2. Lightly toss the ingredients until a blend of colours is achieved. If not serving immediately, sprinkle the lemon juice over the mixture and toss lightly. This will help the ingredients stay their individual vibrant colours until it is time to serve. 3. Set the salad bowl aside (or in the fridge) and prepare to mix the sauce. DIRECTIONS FOR THE PEANUT SAUCE

peanut butter and tahini. Softly mix with a fork until a blend is achieved. 2. Add in the coconut milk and continue to mix with a fork. 3. Continue blending until a liquid is formed while also adding in the ginger, honey, and salt. 4. Set aside and don’t combine with the zucchini noodle blend until ready to serve. DIRECTIONS FOR GARNISHES

1. A lime wedge is a nice addition to this dish as it helps to intensify the flavour of the creamy peanut sauce. 2. Crushed peanuts give an extra crunch and can be sprinkled on top of the dish before serving. 3. To roast sesame seeds, add to a small frying pan with a drop of olive oil on medium heat, and stir frequently until they reach a golden brown colour. Serving the noodle blend first and drizzling the peanut sauce over top allows the vibrant colours to stand out. Then, after garnishing with your choice of toppings, it’s ready to enjoy!
