From the publishers desk...
This fall, my family spent a weekend hiking in Breckenridge, Colorado. In addition to the break from the Texas heat, we savored time away from the normal routine of life to spend time being active outside. I loved spending time enjoying nature and soaking up God’s beautiful creation together. It was good for my soul.
With our annual wellness issue, I’m reminded of the importance of healthcare providers, from primary care physicians to physical therapists, dentists and ourselves! While it is crucial to have professionals to help you care for yourself, it’s also important to take care of our own bodies through exercise and active living. In this issue, our goal is to help you raise the bar in all of these areas. Learn about Waco’s top wellness providers in our spotlight section beginning on page 78, and find a more personal glimpse into the lives of a few of these local providers in our wellness features starting on page 49.
As we wrap up the year, I’ve made a commitment to myself to be more active. It’s easy to get busy and not make time for ourselves. We often hear statements like “someday when” or “when I retire” or “I’ve always wanted to.” However, with tomorrow not being guaranteed, it’s important for us to take time now to focus on our health and wellness. Amidst our hectic lives, dedicating moments to staying fit and caring for our well-being becomes an investment that pays off in the long run. Join us on page 72 to learn what you can do in Waco to live a more active, healthy lifestyle. We hope you and your families find health and happiness this holiday season!

BEAUTIFUL SPACES
Home is a sacred place. It’s a place of respite and, lucky for us, the shift in home design is bringing a return of color, natural surfaces, closed concept spaces, mixed metals and nostalgic collected finds.
This Midwest ranch home is just shy of 4,000 square feet. The goal with this fairly basic floor plan was to make it feel completely customized and out-of-the-ordinary. Kitchen details include pantry cabinets painted in a bold, rich pewter with contrasting quartz countertops by Vicostone, a full-height backsplash and Cleo pendants by Visual Comfort. Texture and depth were brought in with the stucco hood vent and table linen by Portola. From there the room was layered in vertical v-groove paneling, rich white oak, brass Rejuvenation hardware, black Kohler plumbing, a vintage runner, and Mcgee and Co. woven leather bar stools to finish the look.
Smaller spaces like mudrooms, guest bathrooms, and laundry rooms have the potential for a large impact on your home. These are the rooms to try the fun wallpaper, the bolder color, the trim detail, or the more expensive tile because it’s more affordable in smaller spaces. Color and character were brought into the hall bathroom with “Retreat” by Sherwin Williams v-groove paneling, bold Calacatta Gold tile floor, handmade brass sconces and a found bath mat. The mudroom incorporates rift white oak, custom-made white oak handles, and an earth-tone vintage runner.
Adjacent from the mudroom is the laundry room, where natural elements continue with white oak cabinetry, brass details like the Hudson Valley sconce light, bluestonelike tile flooring, and one-of-a-kind zellige tile in the backsplash from Riad in the color Natural White.
Similar design elements continue in the primary suite with vertical paneling, a custom-made mirror with metal corner detail, rift white oak cabinetry, and contrasting trim in the color “Piano Room” by Portola. A stand-out feature of this space was the perfectly paired alabaster sconces from Visual Comfort. Natural elements like branches, florals, or greens were the perfect finish to this space — and might be the missing finishing touch in your space too.
While the main floor was filled with natural light, the basement of this ranch home on a flat lot was not. The floor-to-ceiling green paint (“Underground” by Portola) embraces the lack of light and creates a dark, moody space. The backsplash tile from Kate Lo, laid in a vertical grid pattern is a nearly identical color. The warm space was completed with white and bronze Hudson Valley Eldridge pendants, concrete-like quartz from Vicostone, white oak shelving, along with rich, woven leather and walnut counter stools by Safavieh.

“What started as a young woman with a love for clothes and all things fashion has now grown into something from my wildest dreams. I can not thank you all enough for the love and support you have shown me, my family and Courtney’s Boutique over the past 20 years. I have been blessed with the best customers who have turned into some of my closest and dearest friends. You all have walked alongside me for some of the best, and some of the worst, times of my life. You held my hand through my fight against breast cancer. When I lost my precious sisters, you helped get my feet back on the ground and find a way to keep going, even with such a big part of Courtney’s Boutique missing. For that alone I am forever grateful.
Courtney’s Boutique started out of the back of my car with pop up shows at local schools and homes all around central Texas. The store is named after my daughter, Courtney, which was also my maiden name. My sisters and I used to fight over who would get to use the name for our daughter one day. I spent several years traveling up and down the highway to set up in Canton, Texas month after month. All of that led to our current location in the Central Texas Marketplace for the past eight years. I have a great team who works hard to continue to bring you the latest trends and fashions. My nieces are part of my team and are familiar faces you have probably seen on our social media. I give God all of the glory for allowing me to live out my dream. Thank you from the bottom of my heart for the past 20 years. I look forward to many, many more.
the art of refuge
Salon Asylum has been the go to luxury indulgence for Wacoans for the past several years, but this year marks 10 years of it’s commitment to Waco and surrounding communities. It has steadily become the premier luxury salon of Waco by turning the tides of the typical salon experience. In years past, the people of Waco (and surrounding communities) would prefer to make the drive to Austin or Dallas, even sometimes as far as Houston, to make sure they were getting a quality salon experience. Salon Asylum, and its expansive staff of professional stylists, have created the opposite condition. Faithful guests now come from other cities, including those fore-mentioned, to consistently relive their salon and hair experience, not to mention the many locals who call the salon home.
The staff at Salon Asylum reaches deeply to provide a luxurious, restful and curative experience. The salons slogan is “the art of refuge” and living up to that is no easy feat. Each guest experience is carefully thought out and executed daily to maintain a level of precision and attention to detail that may be hard to find and replicate elsewhere. It is truly “the secret sauce.” Part of the rhythm of the salon is to be attainable for anyone. With a tiered pricing system, and multiple professionals to choose from, Salon Asylum is sure to reward the guests that decide to trust the salon that has been the “best kept secret” of Waco for years.
HOMEOWNER & INTERIOR DESIGNER KATE CHIPINSKI
Kate Chipinski is an eco-friendly, DIY home renovator and stylist who worked with her husband to bring her skills into their home. When decorating for Christmas, they kept it minimal, but cozy, by layering textures. The wall of windows and dark stain in the sunroom is the perfect indoor-outdoor “snow globe” space to display Christmas decor.
Plaid is a perfect fabric pattern for the winter season. It feels festive without being too bold. Another way to add festive vibes to any space is simple cedar garland, which you will see in several rooms in the house. For places that need a bigger impact, layer garlands for a fuller look.
When building a holiday tablescape, find a few musthave pieces and take them to the next level with things you already have. The faux cedar chargers layered with leather chargers created a strong foundation to which she added her existing plates and napkins. Inexpensive vintage-inspired gold bells and velvet ribbon completed the beautiful table setting.
In addition to the DIY wood round artwork, the living room holiday decor came in from the outside. A dead tree branch that had fallen down in the yard became a modern Christmas tree with the addition of faux greenery and recycled glass icicle ornaments. Don’t be afraid to use a mixture of real and faux greenery in different places around the home. Fill flower boxes around the exterior with real stems from local nurseries and add personal touches to simple wreaths with vintage-inspired bells and velvet ribbon.
Roasted Cauliflower Soup
This soup is a blend of simple, roasted ingredients, made with beans (instead of cream) and topped with homemade croutons.
Prep Time: 10 minutes
Cook Time: 40 minutes
Total Time: 50 minutes
Servings: 4
INGREDIENTS
• 1 head cauliflower, cut into small florets
• 4 cloves garlic
• 4 tbsp olive oil, divided
• 1/2 tsp coarse salt
• 1/4 tsp pepper
• 1/2 tsp ground cumin
• 1/4 tsp ground paprika
• 1 small yellow onion, chopped
• 398 ml can white navy (or cannellini) beans
• 6 cups vegetable stock
• 2 sprigs fresh thyme
• Salt and pepper
INSTRUCTIONS
Pre-heat your oven to 450F. Mix the cauliflower florets with 2 tbsp olive oil, salt, pepper, cumin and paprika and then spread out onto a baking sheet. Add the garlic cloves, still in their peels, to the baking sheet.
Bake in the oven for 15 minutes. Toss and bake for 10 more minutes.
While the cauliflower is roasting, place a large pot over medium heat and add in 2 tbsp olive oil. Then add in your chopped onions, sautéing until translucent, about 5-7 minutes.
Add in the beans, stock, sprigs of thyme, salt and pepper and bring to a simmer. Let simmer for 8 more minutes
Once the cauliflower is done roasting, remove the thyme sprigs from the pot. Then, add the cauliflower to the pot and squeeze the roasted garlic out of their shells into the pot.
Blend to your desired consistency with an immersion blender or standard blender. Heat the soup over low heat for about 5 minutes and season to taste.
Serve this delicious soup with croutons or toasted bread for a cozy meal!

Spiced Pear Baked French Toast
Looking for fall recipes? This delicious french toast will be a hit at any brunch.
Prep Time: 20 minutes
Cook Time: 1 hour 10 minutes
Total Time: 1 hour 30 minutes
Servings: 8
INGREDIENTS
• 1 loaf day-old bread cut into cubes (about 10 packed cups of bread) - French bread or brioche or a baguette will work
• 1/2 cup chopped or sliced almonds, toasted
• Butter for the dish and serving
• Maple syrup for serving
Spiced Pear Mixture:
• 2 ripe pears, sliced
• 1 tsp cinnamon
• ½ tsp nutmeg
• 2 tbsp brown sugar
• 2 tbsp butter, melted
Milk Mixture:
• 7 large eggs
• 2 ½ cups milk
• ¼ cup maple syrup
• 1 tsp vanilla extract
• 1½ tsp cinnamon
• Pinch of salt
INSTRUCTIONS
Turn your oven to low broil. Toast almonds on a baking sheet for 3-4 minutes. Set aside. Generously grease a 9x13 baking dish with butter and turn your oven to 350F.
Whisk eggs, milk, maple syrup, vanilla extract, cinnamon and salt for milk mixture. Set aside.
For spiced pear mixture, melt butter in a bowl and mix in the pears, cinnamon, nutmeg and brown sugar.
Spread half of the bread into the baking dish. If the bread is fresh, cut into cubes and toast in the oven at 200F for about 10 minutes to dry it out. Spread half of the spiced pears and almonds over the bread. Repeat to spread the remaining bread, pears and almonds. Pour the milk mixture evenly to cover everything. Let sit for at least 10 minutes before baking or let sit overnight in the fridge.
Cover with foil and bake for 30 minutes. Uncover and bake for 15-20 more minutes until golden on top. It should be firm and puffed up when it’s fully baked. There should be no liquid left. (If you’ve let it sit overnight, take it out of the fridge while the oven is pre-heating. It might require 10-15 more minutes baking time.)
Let stand for 5 minutes before serving. Top with butter and drizzle with maple syrup.
Recipe by: Jessica Kostka | Cookinginmygenes.comLet’s talk about SUN Damage
Sun damage is one of the biggest impacts on aging. Unlike wrinkles around the eyes or mouth that result from repeated movement, crepey skin can typically be traced to sun damage. Too much exposure to the sun breaks down elastin, the fibers in your skin that allow it to stretch and return to its normal position. Those fibers can heal, but, after repeated exposure, they eventually lose their ability to repair. Think of it as an elastic waistband that, with wear, becomes more relaxed. Wrinkly, crepey skin usually begins to appear in your 40s but it can show up much earlier if you are a chronic tanningbed user.
Here are some of the best ways to prevent & treat crepey skin:
• Stay out of the sun as much as possible. Protect your skin with a good sunblock.
• Make skin hydration a priority. Use a good moisturizer. Keeping your skin well-hydrated with a good moisturizer helps prevent damage that creates or worsens crepiness. Look for moisturizers that contain lubricating and plumping ingredients like hyaluronic acid.
• Fractionated lasers create microscopic holes in the skin. The skin will contract as it heals and grows fresh, new skin. CO2 fractional laser improves the skin tone, and texture and stimulates collagen.
• Microneedling with CO2 laser is a great combination. Both of these create controlled trauma that ignites your collagen and addresses brown spot, texture, fine lines and wrinkles.
• Pdo Threads is a process of natural protein synthesis that begins after about 10-14 days of the threads being inserted. Over the subsequent weeks, results will continue to improve, peaking at around 6 months and lasting for up to 2 years as your own body produces collagen and elastin. The thread itself is completely biodegradable and dissolves within 12 weeks. When the thread dissolves, new collagen will have formed around the thread and will continue to support results. You will notice that the appearance of the skin will improve in terms of overall texture, thickness and tightness as fine lines and wrinkles are reduced.
There are a host of options available to reduce crepey skin as you age. To learn more about these options, call or text Waco Medical Laser at 254-776-8009. You can also book online once you know what the best options are for you.

Breast Cancer Survivor
It was the last thing she expected. NASREEN SHAHI, a fashion influencer living in Austin, was diagnosed with breast cancer following her very first mammogram at the age of 40.
“I never in a million years would have expected that I would be diagnosed with stage IV metastatic breast cancer,” Nasreen said. I was in the best shape of my life, exercising regularly and living a healthy lifestyle. I didn’t have any symptoms, so it was a shock.”
Her focus became overcoming this diagnosis and making sure her kids did not have to grow up without their mother. With the support of her family and medical team, she endured six rounds of chemotherapy over an 18-week period and a double mastectomy and DIEP flap reconstruction followed by 28 rounds of radiation.
“I truly had no idea that I could find the strength to not only accept this diagnosis, but to thrive during it,” Nasreen said. “I realized that I am a lot stronger than I gave myself credit for. So many survivors told me that once you’re on the other side you are a different person, and I couldn’t agree more. Life is so incredibly precious, and I am thankful for every single day that I have here with my family.
“This has also taught me how to really show up to support others, after seeing the support that was given to me. For those walking through this, I’m sending you so much love. This isn’t something we’d wish on anyone, but life on the other side is so much more beautiful. Take it one day, sometimes one hour, at a time. You’ve got this, and you are going to be okay.”

ERIKA SUTTON
Active Therapy Group | Owner
DR. ERIKA SUTTON went to Texas A&M to study veterinary medicine, but after a few biochemistry classes, and a few dog bites, she quickly changed courses. She began studying exercise biomechanics and movement patterns. Her sports background as a heptathlete and history of personal injuries helped her develop a passion for movement. She received her Doctor of Physical Therapy degree from Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center and completed a residency program in orthopedics and manual therapy.
Although she has always been a Texan, she moved to Waco in 2010 with the intention of only staying three years while her husband completed a job within his company. Now Waco is the only home her two daughters know.
She has been practicing physical therapy locally for 13 years and teaching at Baylor University for four years. Her goal of getting back to private practice came to fruition through Active Therapy Group in 2019.
“Our mission is to redefined the approach of wellbeing, inspiring our community where movement is the medicine and age is no barrier to active life,” Erika said.
Active Therapy Group is a collection of collaborative clinicians who strive towards serving our community by teaching each individual how to be active at any age! They aim to empower everyone that comes through the doors to learn how to “Get Active, Be Active, Live Active.” Each of the nine specialists bring a specific dynamic, knowledge and experience base to serve their patients holistically and to the best of their ability.
“Active Therapy group is not your everyday PT place. We strive to set the standard.”
—DR. RYAN WIGLEY
“Our role is to help people understand their full potential and push them beyond what they think they are capable of so that they can live life to the fullest.”
—DR. TYLER JONES

THERESA LASSETTER
Heart of Texas Smiles | Owner
In our happiest moments, we shouldn’t be preoccupied with insecurities. Even as a young girl, Theresa Lassetter noticed that her mother covered her smile every time she laughed. She made it her mission to help people — including her mom — have confidence in their smile and enjoy their happiest moments.
“The happy tears on the face of a patient who has not been able to fully smile for a long time is the most amazing gift,” Theresa said.
DR. THERESA LASSETTER, originally from Plano, came to Waco to attend Baylor University for her undergraduate degree in biology. To help pay for school, she worked nearly full-time hours in the Lowe’s Garden Center, where she met her husband, Cody, a Waco-local.
“I went to Baylor University and manifested a love for Waco that was unshakeable!” Theresa said. “The science program was amazing and created a foundation strong enough for me to start dental school as a newlywed, have two children, hold a part-time job, and graduate in the honors program of the University of Texas School of Dentistry at Houston.”
After graduating at the top of her class and becoming a Doctor of Dental Surgery, Theresa and Cody moved back to Waco and completed their family with two more children — a son and a dental office.
“My husband and I have three gorgeous little children — Avery, Parker and Preston — and joke that the dental office is my fourth child,” Theresa said.
Theresa quickly worked her way up from dentist to partner to owner at Heart of Texas Smiles — a comprehensive family dental office that prides itself on having the best technologies and continuing education.
Outside of the dental office, you might be able to find her speaking fluent conversational Mandarin,
camping and fishing at Lake Waco, spending time with her family on their land in Lorena, or sharing joy with those around her.
“It is fun to be able to go into the office every day and create more joy,” Theresa said. “As the world trends toward being less happy, creating our own sunshine is the most motivating force there is.”
Because she serves so many roles at the clinic, Theresa could not properly care for her patient family without the help of her entire team, including dentists Dr. Guillermo Rivacoba, who shares her alma mater, and Dr. Shria Dhaon, the newest dentist to the Heart of Texas Smiles family.
DR. GUILLERMO RIVACOBA may be from San Antonio, but living in Mexico and Canada sparked his love for soccer, snowboarding and traveling. He has made Waco home and been at the Heart of Texas Smiles practice for over two years.
DR. SHRIA DHAON came from three generations of doctors and brought her passion for art to healthcare through dentistry. She is from New Delhi, India, and earned her doctorate in Los Angeles, but she recently found home in Waco.
DR. WILLIAM NESMITH
In April, DR. WILLIAM NESMITH opened Lighthouse Pediatrics, the only pediatric concierge medicine practice in central Texas. His vision was to re-imagine holistic pediatric healthcare.
“After eighteen years of growing a practice, I am ready to help families in a whole new way,” Nesmith said. “Through a whole-child approach, parental education and expert medical care, I will assist you in raising a child who is healthy physically, mentally and emotionally.”
At Lighthouse Pediatrics, Dr. Nesmith offers personalized, round-the-clock access and communication, extended appointment times, unlimited visits, and educational seminars with focus on mental health, preventative medicine and successful parenting strategies. The enhanced access and additional services are made possible by reducing the number of patients and creating a first-come, first-serve membership pricing structure.
“To me, it is the way medicine was meant to be practiced,” Nesmith said. “The world of medicine is more and more dictated by insurance companies with the end result being less time with patients and more unnecessary work. Our mission at Lighthouse Pediatrics is to enable parents to raise children who become the best possible version of themselves.”
Lighthouse Pediatrics helps parents protect their children from life’s inherent dangers through immunizations and home safety; guide their children as they navigate the chaos of early childhood, the social dilemmas of elementary school, and the murky waters of adolescence; and inspire dreams of success in all stages of life.
In addition to his professional expertise, Nesmith’s holistic care is shaped by his personal experience of raising two children with his wife, Dr. Kim Nesmith, as well as overcoming his own autoimmune diagnosis in 2016, which nearly left him immobile.
“I got to the point where walking was difficult. Fortunately, with the right medicine, I was able to start moving again, eventually jogging then running.
I run now because I can, and I am very thankful for that ability every time I go out.”
BRYAN TAYLOR & DANIELLE GESHAY
DR. BRYAN TAYLOR, founder of Brazos Braces, is a Waco-native and third generation dentist and secondgeneration orthodontist who always knew he would follow in his father’s footsteps. He has two daughters, is married to his college sweetheart and, in his free time, has been a pilot for 30 years.
After graduating from Baylor University, he went into practice with his dad before opening his own practice. Brazos Braces is a dental practice specializing in orthodontics, providing braces and invisalign treatments for adults and children in the greater central Texas area with clinics in Waco, Gatesville and China Spring.
They have a strong commitment to their patients, striving to create a convenient, friendly and professional atmosphere in which to address the patients’ biggest concerns while recommending treatment plans in the best interest of their overall health. None of their treatment plans are “cookie cutter” – every single person gets a customized treatment plan specific to them and their dental concerns.
“I think my favorite part of the job is sharing in the patient’s joy when we remove braces, and they see the hard-earned and years-long results,” Bryan said.
DR. DANIELLE GESHAY, better known to her friends as Dannee, started at Brazos Braces as an intern while studying at Baylor University while deciding whether she wanted to be a physician or dentist. She chose dentistry partially because of her experience at Brazos Braces. After graduating from an orthodontic residency at Texas A&M in 2016, she returned to Brazos Braces where she now works alongside Dr. Bryan Taylor as a partner.
“Dr. T became a great mentor and a great friend,” Dannee said. “When I got into dental school, he was one of the first people I told! The Brazos Braces staff actually bought me a cookie cake that said ‘Congrats to the future Dr. Geshay.’ Later, when I got into orthodontic school, he was still one of the first people I told. We kept in touch throughout orthodontic school, and he told me that he would be looking for a partner within a couple years and suggested that I come back to Waco to work with him. I said yes, and I never looked back! Coming back to this office felt like coming back home.”
DAWN HARVEY
After watching her mom work as a hair stylist, DAWN HARVEY knew she wanted to work in the beauty industry. She has a passion for helping women feel confident and beautiful. Now she is a wife, mother and owner of Spraytopia Airbrush Tanning, a state of-the-art, air conditioned and ventilated spray tan facility that has been serving the Waco community since 2011.
As a licensed esthetician with almost 25 years experience in the beauty industry, Dawn is owner and master spray tan artist. Through using only the finest all-natual solutions, she is able to provide women with a healthy, long-lasting, realistic glow. Dawn’s goal is to create a comfortable experience that offers a safe alternative to tanning beds and sun damage while helping women feel confident and more beautiful than they already are.
If you visit Spraytopia you may also meet Laynie Grisham, who is a full-time real estate agent and part-time spray tan artist, or Briana Rusk, who operates Bloom Hair Studio inside Spraytopia.
The motivating force behind Dawn’s passion is making a difference in the lives of women. Whether that is through a flawless spray tan or supporting other local women-owned businesses.
“I love when women can support women,” Dawn said. “We need more of it! The most rewarding thing about my job is the opportunity to turn somebody’s day around. To help them see the beauty in themselves. To speak life into them.”

CHARLIE & JULIE MELTON
Let us introduce you to one of Waco’s wellness power couples — CHARLIE and JULE MELTON — who are making an impact in their careers, raising their blended family and giving God the glory. Charlie is the director of athletic performance for the Baylor University men’s basketball team, and Julie is the chief stewardship officer at Hope and Believe Pediatric Therapy.
Charlie came to Waco in 2005 to work with the Baylor basketball team. His passion for the exercise industry led him to being a strength and conditioning coach, where he has a dual focus on winning championships and spreading the gospel.
“Any victory or success we achieve is by the grace of God,” Charlie said. “We compete at a high level to represent our team and families in a way that honors their support and sacrifices.”
The bulk of his responsibility includes physical preparation in the summer, and, during the season, his focus shifts to warm-up, weight workouts and injury rehabilitation. Because of the talented student athletes that are recruited to Baylor, Charlie has had the opportunity to train 46 student athletes who have gone on to play basketball professionally.
Julie found a niche passion in pediatric physical therapy. In her leadership role at Hope and Believe Pediatric Therapy, she chose to take the title of chief stewardship officer to remind herself that she is a steward of what God provided.
Hope and Believe Pediatric Therapy serves children with special needs, delays and injuries through physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy and applied behavior analysis. They also offer equine therapy, aquatic therapy, therapeutic tricycles and voice output device training.
“Making things magical for the kids is what really motivates me,” Julie said. “The kids and the therapists both come for hard work, but if we can make the environment and experience magical, then the hard part of the work is replaced by laughter.”
Thanks to the orchestration of their mutual friends, Charlie and Julie met in 2012. Later that year, Charlie reintroduced himself when Julie’s sons attended Baylor’s basketball camp, and they went on their first date a few months later. In 2014, they got married, creating their blended family — Norah, Robbie, Sammie, Aidan and Tristan.
Charlie and Julie enjoy opportunities to collaborate professionally, but they find the most joy in collaborating at home with their family and farm, where Charlie is the chef. Balancing time between their professions and family can be difficult, but embracing their passions — performing equestrian therapy on their own farm and participating in Baylor’s basketball program — has brought them nothing but joy and gratitude.

I have many patients who were afraid at first. It’s important to see an expert injector, like me, who does aesthetic injections and procedures every day, all day, in a clinical environment. I continue my education and training consistently to provide the best noticeable results to keep you looking like you, naturally better.”
DR. BRADFORD HOLLAND
Coryell Health | ENT
“In everything I do, I try to make our community healthier.”
— Dr. Bradford Holland
DR. BRADFORD HOLLAND has been serving Waco and the central Texas area as an otolaryngologist and head and neck surgeon for adults and children for 21 years. He is now the first full-time ear, nose and throat doctor at Coryell Health, a growing medical community expanding its surgical services with locations in Gatesville, Goldthwaite, Moody, Temple and Waco.
BECOMING A PHYSICIAN
Dr. Holland’s undeniable desire to be a physician began in high school, but, at the time, his goal seemed so distant and unattainable.
“When I look back and realize that, after all the time and effort, I have achieved my ultimate vocational goals, I get an absolute sense of satisfaction and joy that makes me want to show up every day and live the life that I had envisioned,” Dr. Holland said. “My life is a dream come true, and, though I’ve had many challenges along the way, it is a gift I can’t help but be excited about.”
MAKING TEXAS HOME
After being born and raised in Colorado, his freshman roommate at the University of Colorado exposed him to all things Texas through hunting and fishing trips. Dr. Holland first had the opportunity to live in Texas while he attended medical school at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas. After spending his residency years in North Carolina, he came back to Texas to make it home.
“Waco is the perfect size town in a perfect location, situated between several major metroplexes,” Dr. Holland said. “The people are what make central Texas desirable and unique. There is a love of state, love of country and a persistent support of the ‘love thy neighbor’ mentality that many places have lost.”
A HEALTHIER COMMUNITY
The sinus issues that require Dr. Holland’s attention are actually impacted very little by cold and flu season. The most common issue he sees in patients is simple — they waited too long to see a specialist for a persistent problem.
“If you have a sinus infection that has not resolved after two or three rounds of antibiotics, hoarseness that lasts for more than three weeks, trouble swallowing, a neck mass or pain in your throat, you ought to be thinking about going to a specialist earlier than later,” Dr. Holland said.
In addition to spending his days in the clinic and in surgery, Dr. Holland is an advocate for local medical politics through the Texas Medical Association and the editorial board of Texas Medicine. He is also involved in the McClennan County Medical Society and Baylor University Communication Sciences and Disorders Department as an adjunct professor.
“In everything I do, I try to make our community healthier,” Dr. Holland said.
His own health battles with colon cancer and excess weight have made him an advocate for healthy lifestyles.
“Even though I’m a physician and surgeon, I did not lead a particularly healthy lifestyle for the last decade or two,” Dr. Holland said. “As I now lead a healthier lifestyle with my family, I realize how much your physical health affects your mental and physical state.”
Now, as a 52-year-old, Dr. Holland, his wife and blended family with four children are enjoying life in Waco with their dogs, who are both, ironically, deaf!
thrive throughACTIVE LIVING
We all want to stay well. We may be motivated by a desire to be fully present for our loved ones or by a longing to live life to the fullest. Whatever the motivation may be, living well means taking care of ourselves. Going to a primary care physician, dentist or optometrist once or twice a year is crucial, but that does not equate to holistic wellness. Wellness is attained through daily habits that nurture our physical, mental and emotional health, all of which are possible through active living. Active living is not just about physical fitness. Moving our bodies also improves our mental and emotional health by reducing stress and anxiety and encouraging better cognition and sleeping patterns. By nurturing the body and mind in tandem, active living lays the foundation for a more vibrant existence. Let’s change our mindset from surviving to thriving and achieve a balanced and fulfilling life!
As fall approaches and the heat of summer begins to fade slightly here in Waco, there are numerous opportunities to practice an active lifestyle in our local great outdoors.

50 years. That's a long time for anything, and yet, if you ask my parents, the last half century passed in the blink of an eye.
My parents were high school sweethearts in Paris, Texas, where they still live today. They got married when they were 19 years old. They've always been each other's best friend.
The older I get, the more I appreciate their relationship. They admit it took a lot of hard work, highs and lows, but the payoff has been worth it. We recently celebrated my parents' anniversary with a trip to Mexico with my brother, his wife and their kids. It will forever rank as one of my all-time favorite family memories. My parents are simple people who still work full-time while pushing 70-years-old, but we did our best to spoil them for once. We arranged for someone to do my mom's makeup. It was a first for her, and we took professional pictures to mark their milestone. We surprised my parents with a fireworks show and ate amazing food.
But the most memorable part of the trip was a video tribute. My oldest daughter Callie and I gathered pictures and interviews from friends and family who offered words of congratulations and shared memories dating back decades. It's hard to watch without crying. Even my dad, who is known for his toughness, cried. It's a strange feeling to watch life literally flash by on a screen. It's the first time I appreciated how fast it happens.
I asked my parents separately for their secret to 50 years and yet both answered the same:
God first, family second.
"And always do the right thing," my dad added.
Well done, Mom and Dad. Our lives have been richly blessed by you. And thank you for the reminder that the days are long, but the years are short. Even 50 years.
