Spring is upon us and I couldn’t be more excited! Leading into this season, we experienced such amazing participation and engagement from the community with our 2nd Annual Heart of Texas Championship. In this March Madness style competition, the people of Waco cast their votes selecting their favorite local businesses across a variety of categories. We covered everything from restaurants, salons, real estate and more! Throughout this issue, we unveil and highlight all of our winners and runner-up contestants.

Seeing so many passionate voters and participants reminds me what a special, tight-knit community Waco is. Our residents are what make Waco such a great community to be a part of.

The season of spring also encourages growth, which I have recently seen take place in my own family. My family and I are celebrating milestones with both kids leaning into new experiences, which has allowed me to recognize the beauty in trying new things. In February, we were fortunate enough to participate in the McLennan County Jr. Livestock Show. The livestock show is rooted in bringing our youth together to compete in livestock showmanship, sales, cooking and more. This program knits our community together in special ways, allowing for collaboration amongst organizations and individuals to contribute in volunteering, sponsorship and scholarship donation. Our communities’ children walked away with a sense of accomplishment, responsibility, and pride for their entries. Not only did our children learn more about the foundation of agriculture, but they also got to bring home award funds to put towards their future education and participating in next year’s event. As a parent, I am overjoyed that my children are experiencing the benefits of being involved in a community program that fosters skills of problem-solving, independence, and leadership.

From the Heart of Texas Championship to my family’s 4H endeavors, there are so many reasons to love the different facets of this community. Thank you, Waco, for continuing to make this community a place we are proud to be a part of. I am excited to share with you the newest edition of Modern Texas Living and hope you feel as inspired by these excellent businesses and people as much as I am. #LETSGOWACO

Di Campli’s Italian Ristorante

A local favorite, DI CAMPLI’S ITALIAN RISTORANTE brings a taste of Italian to the Waco community without having to travel too far. Di Campli’s owners, Massimo Di Campli, from the Abruzzo region in Italy, and his wife Kristen, a Waco native, opened the restaurant in 2020 with the dream of serving authentic Italian cuisine in the community they call home.

Sun damage is one of the biggest impacts on aging. Unlike wrinkles around the eyes or mouth that result from repeated movement, crepey skin can typically be traced to sun damage. Here are some of the best ways to prevent & treat crepey skin:

• Stay out of the sun as much as possible. Protect your skin with a good sunblock.

• Make skin hydration a priority. Use a good moisturizer. Keeping your skin well-hydrated with a good moisturizer helps prevent damage that creates or worsens crepiness. Look for moisturizers that contain lubricating and plumping ingredients like hyaluronic acid.

• Fractionated lasers create microscopic holes in the skin. The skin will contract as it heals and grows fresh, new skin. CO2 fractional laser improves the skin tone, and texture and stimulates collagen.

• Microneedling with CO2 laser is a great combination. Both of these create controlled trauma that ignites your collagen and addresses brown spot, texture, fine lines and wrinkles.

• Pdo Threads is a process of natural protein synthesis that begins after about 10-14 days of the threads being inserted. Over the subsequent weeks, results will continue to improve, peaking at around 6 months and lasting for up to 2 years as your own body produces collagen and elastin. The thread itself is completely biodegradable and dissolves within 12 weeks. When the thread dissolves, new collagen will have formed around the thread and will continue to support results. You will notice that the appearance of the skin will improve in terms of overall texture, thickness and tightness as fine lines and wrinkles are reduced.

Embracing the Teenage Years

A teenager. If you’d told me 13 years ago that nearly a decade and a half would pass in a blink, I’d never have believed you but my oldest child, Callie, is officially a teenager. Honestly, how did that happen so quickly? The sleepless nights with a newborn, the first steps, starting kindergarten, then junior high and now a young lady. I don’t know what I expected of this stage of life, but I can honestly say I’m enjoying it.

For me, 13 is an exciting time. Callie started junior high sports. She’s a cheerleader, plays basketball, volleyball, runs track and is in the band. Junior high has been a time of learning independence with academics and just about everything else. It’s overall a very busy time, but I know one day I’ll miss it. I’ve loved watching Callie grow.

Sure, it has its unique challenges but there’s something also fun about having a maturing child in the home, and every day

is different. Some days Callie wants tips on makeup. Other days she can’t wait to share exciting news with me after school. Navigating teenage years isn’t always easy. We’ve also had our fair share of tears while trying to learn how to manage friendships and conflict. All I know to do each day as a parent is to pray for Callie to grow up knowing Jesus and treating others with respect. I asked Callie what 13 meant to her --and she said, “getting closer to high school.”

I’m not sure I’m ready for that. But I wasn’t ready for her first steps or the first day of kindergarten.I wasn’t ready for the first day of junior high or the last day of 7th grade. But for now, I’m going to enjoy 13 before I blink and she’s driving. We’ve all heard the saying “time flies when you’re having fun.” Time has blown by, so teenage years, bring on the fun.
