PUBLISHER’S NOTE

The holidays are a time when families and communities come together to celebrate the many joys that life brings us. During this time of celebration, I’m reminded that one of the biggest presents we receive throughout the holiday season is the presence of those we love the most.

Our health plays a major role in whether or not we get to receive this amazing gift, and most of the time, it’s something we take for granted. It’s in those moments when a loved one requires surgery or experiences a health scare that we truly realize the value of good health.

When standing in front of hospital doors, anxiously awaiting news about a family member or friend, you find yourself trusting the doctors and nurses to make everything

REMEMBERING MISS JUNE

better. But even with the most routine procedures, you never really know what the outcome will be until the surgeon finally gives you an update. The incredible care provided by healthcare professionals in these situations makes us truly appreciate the individuals who dedicate their lives to saving others.

This issue of Modern Texas Living is dedicated to highlighting Waco’s wellness warriors and the selfless work they do for the residents of our great city. These healthcare heroes are the backbone of our community, ensuring that we can continue to share precious moments with our loved ones.

Sometimes though, even with the best care, we experience loss. We want to pay tribute to a remarkable woman who started as a Modern Texas Living advertising client but quickly became so much more to me and my family.

June Cates was a talented artist and a wonderful friend. Miss June and her husband Ralph also became the unexpected ‘bonus grandparents’ to my kids, regularly meeting up for lunch dates. Our magazine is more than just a business—it’s brought special friendships into my life, like the one I had with Miss June, for which I will always be thankful.

In August, Miss June lost her battle to cancer. I will never be able to truly express the light that this lovely lady brought to our lives. I’m so incredibly grateful for our time together and for the many other meaningful connections I’ve formed with clients through our publication.

Christmas Charm

Every Christmas, we feel the pressure to decorate our homes just like Martha May Whovier. The Grinch’s love interest has the most spectacular light display in all of Whoville, but it’s a bit over the top for those looking for an understated ambiance. If you hope to dazzle guests this holiday season without a lot of Christmas clutter, these easy tips and updated color palette will allow you to effortlessly capture the charm of this magical season.

Spruce Up Your Mantel With Bold Accents

When you think of Christmas, the mantel and fireplace are the heart of your holiday home decor. To transform this signature space into a stunning Yuletide centerpiece, make sure to gift yourself with a frame TV. This ingenious piece of tech allows you to enjoy your shows, but transforms into a work of art when turned off.

Once you have some festive artwork on display, adorn your mantle with thick strands of evergreen. This classic Christmas fixture can then be spruced up with cream colored stockings, oversized jingle bells, and a bright, red velvet ribbon, secured with command hooks and floral wire. Complete your holiday look with a collection of Christmas table trinkets in a wicker basket. This small touch of holiday charm will add texture and warmth to the space.

Find Modern Merriment With Crimson, White, & Black

There is something so serene about a monochromatic look. Another simple way to sleigh this season is to transform your tree into a flawlessly festive focal point with the use of black, white, and red ribbons, baubles, and berries. To achieve this contemporary look, start from the top and work your way down the tree. Keep your lights close to the trunk, attach your ribbons using floral wire, and embellish the branches with ornaments and other accent decor.

Special thanks to Gabriella Schwarz for her design assistance in this space.

Cook Up a Classic Christmas Look With Natural Decor

Keeping with the quintessential red and green theme, a simple and sophisticated way to dress up your kitchen is with evergreen accents along with a collection of winter’s favorite flowers. Drape poinsettia-infused garlands around window frames, position a poinsettia wreath above your stove, and fasten mini wreaths to chair backs. These fresh decorations add an extra jolly touch to any crisp, white kitchen space. However, the silent star in this room is the chalkboard style ‘Hot Cocoa & Snuggles’ sign positioned against the snow colored backsplash. It’s welcoming and whimsical, and adds a bit of character to the kitchen space. Finish off the room with Mackenzie Childs pieces and cozy Christmas-themed mugs to provide a practical and traditional aesthetic to this entertaining area.

NATURAL PRIMARY CARE

THE LADY LOVES

SERVING UP A WIN FOR FRIENDSHIP

When most women become mothers, they enter their courtside era, admiring the game of life from the sidelines while watching others play. Being the mother of littles is meaningful and time consuming work, but the ‘Lady Loves’ want you to know that gaining the title of ‘mom’ is no reason to sit on the bench. Carlie Phipps, Ashley Young, and Brooke Siegmund, members of this Waco women’s tennis group, share how they said ‘deuces’ to their inactive social lives and became ace players in the game of friendship.

A MATCH MADE IN MOTHERHOOD

“As moms, we’ve all lived 100 lives before 10 AM–the swimming lessons, the grocery pickup, the school drop off, and we’ve been up since five, but haven’t had our coffee yet.” Phipps description of the lively life of a mother is a simple example of how moms typically have no time for themselves.

While the idea of making new friends can seem impossible in early motherhood, the Lady Loves are a prime example of why finding success is much simpler than you think. Their story began one fateful day last October. Brooke Siegmund scheduled a tennis lesson for herself and invited a friend to join. As soon as the photo of their fun hit social media, other moms couldn’t wait to join in, reaching out to the individuals they knew in the initial group.

This twosome quickly multiplied to 20 moms from all walks of life, and the friendships they’ve formed over the past year are a score that will last a lifetime. Most interestingly, one of the keys to their success was the same thing that had been limiting their social lives in the first place–their chaotic schedules.

“We weren’t put together by friend groups. We were put together by ‘you can do Tuesdays,’ ‘you can do Wednesdays,’ and ‘you can do Thursdays’,” Phipps stated. This meant that the original group of friends were not necessarily paired together, but rather, they were partnered up based on which weekly lesson would fit into each of their small social windows. The group also set these lessons up on a flex schedule, so the ladies have always had the option to change days, creating ample opportunities for continued connections.

SCORING PALS, NOT POINTS

Of course, one of the most daunting parts of starting new friendships is finding common ground. The Lady Loves discovered that the other secret to their success was struggling together on the court, with the majority of them beginning this adventure with little to no tennis experience. It’s actually how they got their name.

“When scoring a tennis match, ‘love’ is the term used to mean ‘zero points’. Our name is a nod to where we all started, at the most basic level, zero points, and we are working our way up as ‘Lady Loves’,” Young stated. This was the nickname that their coach dubbed this close knit group of mom friends when they first started out and it’s one of the reasons that they have scored big in friendship.

“There is something about being vulnerable and learning

a new skill together that brings out the humor and joy for all of us,” Young explained. These lessons have also become a safe space for the Lady Loves to open up about their lives. “We share funny anecdotes from our days, discuss our busy schedules, take comfort in each other’s parenting faux pas, and celebrate our parenting wins.”

By having an environment to let off some steam and share in the ups and downs of motherhood, these ladies have not just found happiness on the court, but also in their home life. “On tennis days, I’m in such a good mood. I’m so jazzed up when I come home. I’m a better wife and a better mom. It just makes all of us so much happier,” Phipps stressed. “When the tennis lesson begins, your day restarts and you get to have the best day ever.”

TAKE A SWING AT STARTING YOUR OWN SOCIAL GROUP

For the ladies who are looking to add a few more friends to their current social roster, Phipps stressed that all you need to do is take the first step. “It can be anything. It doesn’t have to be tennis. The moms and the women will come. Everyone wants an outlet and wants something to do. You just need someone to start it.”

In other words, pick a sport or pastime that brings you pleasure, or something that you just want to try, and sign up for a class. Invite a few friends and have them reach out to other ladies in their own social circles. You’ll be surprised at how simple it is to start playing the game of friendship and racking up some pals.

Funny how things always seem to come up when the bank is closed. But with Central National Bank’s After Hours Service, you have access to a real, live local person who can fix problems and answer questions, even if it’s early morning (6 to 8:30 a.m.) or late evening (5 to 10 p.m.). We’re ready to help, 7 days a week!

“I’ve been caring for patients in Waco for over 20 years. I’ve been blessed by their trust and loyalty. I personally like natural-looking results, so please don’t be afraid to come talk to me. I have hundreds of patients who were afraid at first too. It’s important to see an expert injector, like me, who does aesthetic injections and procedures every day, all day, in a clinical environment. I continue my education and training consistently to provide the best noticeable results to keep you looking like you, naturally better.”

Angelia Filer, a Baylor Scott and White Cancer Center volunteer, is of course referencing the incredible work of the hospital’s nurses, but her impact on patient care is just as great.

HEALTH CARE HEROES

Kindness heals the wounds we cannot see. In the moments when we feel as if we cannot breathe, that the news we’ve received or the fight that we’re in is simply too much to bear, the people who give their hearts are the ones who truly change our perspectives. They give us faith in the process, and ourselves. These are the hidden heroes of healthcare. As we enter into the season of gratitude, we want to give thanks for the silent saviors in our community and find inspiration in the amazing work they do.

“I think a lot of times, with a cancer diagnosis, you get sympathy from family and friends, but you don’t always get empathy because you don’t know until you’ve been there,” Filer shared. As a 25-year cancer survivor, she’s intimately familiar with the mental and physical strain that this diagnosis brings, making her the perfect person to confide in.

“Statistics are great, but having someone who has gone through a similar experience can bring a patient peace of mind and possibility.”

A Listening Ear Can Make All the Difference

Filer’s willingness to share her experience with other cancer patients and hear their stories allows her to make meaningful connections and support these individuals while they continually process their diagnosis and fight this devastating disease. Another individual who serves as a sounding board as well as spiritual guide to struggling patients is Chaplain Tim Anderson.

He is the supervisor of a team of extraordinary religious leaders whose main role is to simply attend to the spiritual and emotional needs of the patients, their family members, and the staff of Baylor Scott & White. What’s most interesting about him is that his role as a spiritual leader isn’t a job, it’s a calling. “I came to faith a little later in life. I just felt like this is what I was called to do.”

A big part of chaplaincy is listening and Anderson notes that just having the ability to talk out our problems to someone who is willing to hear them can make all the difference in the world. “People, I think, often have what they need right within themselves and just getting to talk it through can bring them to a better place,” he shared.

Getting a difficult diagnosis or devastating news about a family member or friend can feel like an impossible path to navigate. The simple feeling of being seen and heard can really help, and that’s what volunteers and chaplains do. “It’s a real honor to get to be alongside someone who is going through something really hard and to possibly be a little bit of a help to them. Listening is just an amazing gift to people and maybe a gift that they’ve never had before.”

Love Hea ls Our Hearts

Emotional and spiritual support can bring light during times of extreme darkness, but sometimes the support we need is in the form of love. Obviously, that type of connection takes years to create with another person, but animals have a way of bringing immediate comfort and compassion the moment they greet us.

“Dogs can make anything happen. When a dog comes into a patient room, there’s a calmness that happens. It makes all those outside things that are hitting you left and right disappear,” Angel Paws President Sandy Wittliff said. The love and warmth that an animal brings to a cold and lonely hospital room can sometimes be what saves us. They provide a little bit of normalcy and distraction to allow us to regain some perspective.

“Service dogs help one, therapy dogs help many. We just love working behind the scenes and making people happy.” From emotional support to motivation, these dog and handler duos are dedicated to helping others through rough times.

Small Acts of KinDness Have a Big Impact

These individuals are the perfect reminder of how being present matters. We can all make donations to research, but showing compassion and kindness are much more valuable gifts to someone experiencing a difficult moment in their life.

When people think of giving back, grand moments of giving come to mind, but that doesn’t need to be the case. Julio Alvarez is a prime example of this. He’s been leading the Premier ER Environmental Services team for seven years, ensuring that patients stay safe through rigorous cleaning procedures, but he works nights so his interactions with patients are limited. This doesn’t stop him from paying it forward though.

“If a patient ever needs help, I offer. I open the door for them, I get them a wheelchair, or take them out to their car. I love to help people and I do whatever I can to help anybody out,” Alvarez stressed. Small acts of kindness make big ripples. This holiday season, get inspired to give back and spread joy throughout the community. You never know when it could change a life.

Young Wacoans committed to improving quality of life by leveraging small gifts to make a impact in our community.

Centex Spine & Rehab

Patient First Direct Primary Care

How is Direct Primary Care different?

Direct Primary Care is traditional family medicine with a refreshing alternative to insurance-based care. Patients pay a reasonable monthly subscription fee instead of using insurance billing. Patients have DIRECT access to their primary care provider (PCP) by text, email, phone calls and office visits. We offer 45 minute to hour-long office visits. This truly restores the relationship between the patient and the PCP.

Why did you decide to make the change?

For over 40 years, Dr. Crawford Allison and Mark Roberts, Physician Assistant have both worked within the traditional insurance model and have felt increasing pressure to see more patients each year. We found ourselves spending more time on charting, paperwork, and dealing with insurance companies than on meaningful connections with our patients.

What services do you offer?

We are a full-service family medicine practice that focuses on wellness. We see children and adults with acute and chronic illnesses. We offer group plans that are a wonderful option for small businesses or employers.

What are your patients saying?

Patients love convenience. Often, we can take care of problems without patients needing to come to the clinic. When they do need to come in, we can see them the same day or the next day with no waits. Often, peace of mind is what is most needed. To know their PCP is only a text away seems to be a favorite aspect for our patients.

What are your favorite aspects of this practice? RELATIONSHIPS; this model allows us to put our patients first! Dr. Allison, Julie Roberts, and Mark Roberts-feel strong affection towards people. Using our God-given gifts together is a dream come true.

Where did your name come from?

Our founder and owner started The Grandson Home Care after reflecting back on caring for his own grandmother. He wanted to aim his life at serving the biggest need in Waco that he could identify. He decided on the elderly. He is passionate about the elderly in Waco getting the best care possible because he believes they deserve the best.

What is different about The Grandson Home Care?

Consistency. We don’t do the revolving door model. We match our clients with the same caregiver on a consistent basis as much as possible. This makes a massive difference. Dependability. We are known for being early or on time. We haven’t had a no-show since we started tracking it in late 2022. That’s unheard of in this industry. Monday at 8am means Monday at 8am to us. Old-School Work Ethic. We are not there to sit. We are there to work, serve, and engage our clients. We will do as much as our clients allow us to. High Character. The foundation of our company and our hiring process is based on character. It’s not easy to get a job with us; it takes a special person. Our people are well vetted before getting to wear our nametag. Positive Attitudes. The most common compliment we get is “how sweet our caregivers are” and “how much mom loves her caregiver”. It is life changing to be around people that you enjoy, trust, and lift you up. All-Stars. We are the all-star team. Our people are our secret sauce. You don’t have to roll the dice in hopes of getting a great caregiver. That’s all we’ve got.

In what ways do you help Waco families?

We serve any adult at home or in a facility needing help with daily activities such as bathing,

The Grandson Home Care

dressing, meals, help around the house, medicine reminders, incontinence care, transferring, companionship, transportation, and so much more. We regularly serve people with cancer, stroke, dementia, heart issues, immobility, etc.

What’s your #1 tip for caring for elderly at home?

Don’t do it alone. Ask for help. Take care of yourself. Avoid the mindset of “Only I can care for my loved one the best. It’s my responsibility.” That is a trap. Receiving help can be a gamechanger not just for the family members, but also for the one needing care as well.

Why did you choose to become an orthodontist?

My passion for orthodontics stems from my personal experience with braces in childhood. As a child, I had braces due to a thumb-sucking habit that lasted until the fourth grade. I spent a lot of time in the orthodontic chair, and the transformation in my smile had a profound impact on my self-esteem and how others saw me. This experience inspired me to help others achieve similar transformations in their own lives.

What makes Brazos Braces unique?

We are proud to be one of the few orthodontic offices in Waco still privately owned and managed by a board-certified specialist. This means you can expect truly personalized orthodontic care. We are dedicated to accommodating your needs and ensuring individualized treatment from the same orthodontist throughout your entire journey.

How does Brazos Braces give back to the community?

We are dedicated to making a positive impact beyond orthodontic care. We support local schools and clubs, and we offer free orthodontic treatment through the Smiles Change Lives program and organizing community events such as our fall Trunk-or-Treat and spring Easter egg hunt in China Spring. Our team also actively participates in blood drives, 5K races, and other local events. Additionally, I am an active member of the Junior League of Waco, contributing to our community in various ways.

What is your favorite part of being a new mom?

My husband Corbin and I welcomed our sweet baby girl, Andie Elyse, several months ago, and life has changed in the best way. Joining the mom club has helped me connect with other parents

Brazos Braces Orthodontics

and improved my time management. At work, I’m fully focused on orthodontics, and at home, I’m dedicated to enjoying every moment with my baby.

When should I schedule my child’s first orthodontic exam?

The American Association of Orthodontists suggests that children have their first orthodontic exam around age 7. This early screening helps us identify any potential issues before they develop into more complex problems. Keep in mind, this initial evaluation doesn’t mean your child will immediately start treatment; it’s simply a way to monitor and address any concerns early on.

Deerwood Waco Fertility

Dr. Kessler, why did Deerwood Women’s Health and Wellness decide to expand into fertility care?

Since opening our OB/GYN practice in 2012, we’ve encountered many couples facing infertility who had to travel to Austin or Dallas for specialized care. This need inspired us to expand our services, so our patients can now access comprehensive fertility care right here in Central Texas.

What fertility services are now available at your clinic?

We offer a full range of fertility services, including assessments, consultations, diagnostic testing, fertility medications, and therapies. Additionally, we now provide assisted reproductive treatments like in vitro fertilization (IVF) and intrauterine insemination (IUI). Our goal is to provide personalized, compassionate care for each patient.

How does Deerwood Waco Fertility prioritize accessibility for patients?

We’re committed to making fertility care accessible. Unlike many clinics with long wait times, we can see new patients within days. We also offer custom financing plans to help spread the cost of care over time, ensuring that expert fertility treatment is within reach for our community.

How does Waco Center for Functional Medicine approach patient care and what conditions do you commonly treat?

We believe in partnering with our patients, working together to find the best path forward. We use a combination of vitamins, herbs, and prescriptions when needed, always aiming to restore balance and help patients feel their best. We commonly treat a wide range of conditions, including gut health issues, hormonal imbalances, autoimmune disorders, ADHD, chronic fatigue, thyroid disorders, and more. Our goal is to address the root causes of these issues so that our patients can thrive, not just survive.

What makes your practice unique and how do you stay updated on the latest treatments?

We pride ourselves on spending quality time with our patients, with each visit lasting about an hour. We’re easily accessible through various communication channels, which helps maintain strong patient-provider relationships. To stay at the forefront of functional medicine, we’re constantly learning from our patients and colleagues. We also host a podcast called Functional Medicine in Real Life, where experts discuss the latest treatment approaches and health insights.

What services do your physician assistants provide, and how do they support patient care?

Our physician assistants—Sarah Campbell, Amy Nold, and Brittany Zipperlen—are integral to our practice. They provide functional medicine consultations and hormone replacement management, focusing on uncovering the root causes of symptoms. By using advanced diagnostic testing, including stool, hormone, and mold toxicity tests, they act as “medical detectives” to guide patients towards personalized treatment plans that promote overall wellness.

What made you decide to open Complete Wellness Care of Waco?

I have been in practice in Waco for almost 20 years, specializing in women’s health. As I began searching for safe, effective, convenient ways to improve the health and well-being of my patients, I realized that our devices would be beneficial to men too. Our treatments are non-invasive and require no downtime. For women and men wanting to build muscle and lose fat in specific locations, or those needing to treat urinary leakage and sexual dysfunction, we can help. We are seeing an increase in patients that are successfully losing weight with semaglutide treatments, but also losing muscle mass in their abdomen, pelvic floor, and glutes. Laser hair removal has long been used to improve quality of life for all. We wanted to make sure the name of our new venture reflected this inclusivity.

How does your business contribute to the health of the Waco community?

At Complete Wellness Care of Waco, we focus on helping our community live not just longer, but better. We offer treatments for incontinence, sarcopenia (muscle loss due to aging or illness), and hirsutism (excess hair growth), improving our patients’ quality of life. Additionally, we support new and experienced moms in reversing changes from childbirth, allowing them to return to their pre-pregnancy selves.

What advanced technologies does your business utilize?

Our medical background ensures all our technology is FDA-approved and physician-supervised. We use EmSella, a non-invasive chair that treats urinary incontinence and sexual dysfunction via electromagnetic stimulation. For muscle building and fat reduction, we employ EmSculpt Neo, a top body-sculpting tool that combines electromagnetic stimulation and radiofrequency heat. Our laser device, effective on both light and dark skin, uses Alexandrite and Nd-YAG technologies for superior results.

Complete Wellness Care of Waco

What can patients expect when they choose Complete Wellness Care?

Our staff are passionate about improving the health and quality of life for our community. Many of them have benefitted from the technologies we offer and are eager to describe their experience. The treatment rooms have been designed with patient comfort in mind. We offer free consultations to learn what a client is seeking to treat and ensure we can meet those expectations. We update our training and knowledge base regularly to both maintain safety and make certain that we are offering the most effective treatments available. All this is done under the supervision of an experienced physician.

HOW CLIMBING CAN ELEVATE YOUR HEALTH & WELLNESS GOALS

What many people don’t realize is that climbing is a full-body experience, exercising both the body and the mind. You hone your balance, strength, flexibility, and endurance, all while problem solving on the wall. Each route brings new challenges and opportunities for growth. This is one of the many reasons why climbing becomes a lifelong pursuit.

“Throughout the gym, we have 66 different routes for climbers to try and we plan to change out these routes about every 60 days, so there will be constant variety and unlimited chances to engage all of your faculties.” Robb said.

Climbing is also an ideal way to hang out with friends, and even make new ones. “Whether you come with others or by yourself, there are always opportunities to make connections. Once they’ve completed a route, most climbers

are eager to share beta, giving others pointers and tips on how to handle that particular route’s challenges. We also have experts on staff to help guide, reassure, and encourage you,” Robb said.

And for the families who are looking to be active together, climbing allows everyone to get the workout they desire without having to sacrifice time together. “Everyone can get on the same wall and encounter different challenges along the way.” The facility also has a kid zone for smaller climbers to try their hand at the sport.

For those looking to join the climbing culture and find community in their fitness routine, Basin Climbing and Fitness is an amazing place to find your peak potential and take your workout to new heights.

TASTE Red Herring with

Salmon Crudo

This incredibly flavorful sashimi-style appetizer is sure to tantalize your taste buds and wow your guests! Best of all, it’s a really simple and healthy recipe that uses fresh, seasonal ingredients. Garza believes that it is the “purest, simplest, and best way to eat this type of fish” and he shows us how exceptionally easy it is to make.

Prep Time

30 minutes

Serving Size

Serves 4-5

Ingredients

Spicy Water Dressing

1 yellow bell pepper or 3-5 aji Amarillo peppers

½ cup (100g) lime juice

½ cup (100g) lemon juice

¼ cup (85g) sugar

1 tsp (5g) salt

Salmon Crudo

4-8 ounces sashimi grade salmon (fresh, not frozen)

4 teaspoons olive oil

5-8 cherry tomatoes

½ shallot

1-2 stems of Thai or sweet basil

IMPORTANT NOTE: For those who can’t find fresh salmon, Garza said that tuna, scallops, and red snapper can be fantastic substitutes. In order to get the best results, look for the freshest option at your local fish market.

Instructions

Spicy

Water Dressing

• Roast whole peppers on a gas stovetop, turning them as they begin to char. If you don’t have a gas stove, then roast them in the oven at 375° F for 15 minutes.

• Once cooked, place the peppers in a bowl, cover the container with cling wrap, and allow them to steam for 10-15 minutes.

• Remove the skin, seeds, and stems from the peppers and puree them in a blender.

• Measure out 1/3 a cup of the roasted yellow pepper puree and combine it with the lime and lemon juices, sugar, and salt.

• Once blended, strain the mixture and place it in the fridge.

This portion of the recipe can be made in advance and Garza stressed that by allowing the mixture to set for at least a few hours, it will enhance the flavors of the dressing.

Salmon Crudo

• Thinly slice both the salmon and the shallot and then quarter or half the cherry tomatoes. Place these ingredients in a bowl and lightly season them with olive oil and salt, making sure to not skimp on the oil.

• Transfer the ingredients to a plate and drizzle the dressing over the mixture.

• Tear up a handful of basil leaves and sprinkle them on top.

Allow the dressing to briefly soak into the salmon, tomatoes, and shallots before serving to help fortify the flavors of this bright and bold dish.

Meet the Chef

JOEL GARZA is the Chef de Cuisine at Waco’s Red Herring, a farm to table style restaurant that specializes in coastal Mediterranean cuisine. After attending culinary school and then working in Austin’s restaurant scene for over 15 years, Garza jumped at the chance to open a fine dining establishment in his hometown. He introduces us to one of their signature dishes, Salmon Crudo, which he describes as a vibrant dish that has a kick of brightness and a hint of sweetness in every bite.

on the road SALADO

It’s described as a cross between the towns of Virgin River and Mayberry. The village of Salado is a charming community that invites travelers to slow down and savor the better things in life. For the folks looking for the perfect pit stop along I-35, consider stopping in this scenic spot where strangers quickly become friends and visitors have the opportunity to indulge in incredible artisan experiences.

what to see

1 I 64TH ANNUAL SALADO CHRISTMAS STROLL business.salado.com

The first two weekends in December may just be the most wonderful time of year to visit Salado. Just like in a Hallmark movie, the village transforms into a winter wonderland for their annual Salado Christmas Stroll. Visitors can soak in the sparkle of the twinkly lights adorning Main Street’s shop windows, indulge in the old time excitement of a horse drawn carriage ride, enjoy classic holiday performances and live musical acts, and even take in the annual Christmas parade. Most notably though, the Salado Christmas stroll is the ideal time to find holiday gifts for anyone and everyone on Santa’s nice list! Area businesses are open late, which means that you’re sure to find what you need, even when visiting for just the day. Don’t miss out on Salado’s time-honored Christmas tradition when stopping by this special city in Central Texas.

what to try

2 I SALADO GLASSWORKS

saladoglassworks.com

Everyone knows that small towns are the best places to find interesting people, and what’s better than a fire wizard? Seriously, Salado is home to one of the region’s only live performance glass blowing studios. Not only can you discover stunning chandeliers and eye-catching decor in the Salado Glassworks gallery, but you can also enjoy an array of immersive hands-on workshops.

“We offer interactive experiences where people can come in and be a part of the process. We’ll go out into the studio, and folks can take the pipe, stand in front of the fire, add their own color, and do some manipulation,” owner and lead artist Gail Allard explained.

Collectively, Allard and his team have over 100 years of experience in this ancient art form, so when you sign up for one of their magical classes, you will get to make some truly exquisite pieces while gaining expert insight into their unique trade. Salado Glassworks offers both beginner and intermediate workshops year round, with special pumpkin and Christmas ornament events available throughout the holiday season.

If you want to try your hand at molding molten blobs of glass into striking, oneof-a-kind pyro pieces, head to their website and sign up for all the fun. You will be blown away by your creations and you might even find a new passion to pursue.

what to sip

3 I BARROW BREWING COMPANY

barrowbrewing.com

Another enchanting excursion to add to your itinerary when visiting the village of Salado is Barrow Brewing Company. Your taste buds are sure to marvel at the fantastic flavors in the array of beers crafted in this family-friendly artisan microbrewery. Your eyes and ears will also delight in the spectacular sights and soothing sounds of Salado Creek situated just at the edge of their property.

Sip on their 784 Belgian Style White, dubbed the Blue Moon of Texas, the Kick Flip Hazy IPA, which features the juiciness of a grapefruit with a hint of hops, or the Village Idiot, a seasonal winter warmer brimming with the one of fall’s signature flavors–ginger. Every pint will paint a picture on your palate, and with about a dozen beers to choose from, it’s hard to not want to savor these Salado flavors all day long.

“It’s like buying a piece of art from Salado Glassworks or shopping at the farmer’s market that we host on Saturdays — there is heart put into our products. We don’t just have a love for craft beer, we have a love for our community and making connections,” co-owner KD Hill shared.

And with plenty of events scheduled throughout the holiday season, you are sure to find new friends and good cheer while enjoying some Barrow beer! Celebrate Oktoberfest every Saturday in October, honor your Scottish roots while watching the Highland Games in November, give thanks on Turkey Day at their annual Thanksgiving potluck, and soak in Santa’s favorite season at their Christmas market during the Salado Stroll. No matter when you visit, the experience is sure to fill your cup!

what to savor 4 I THE BARTON HOUSE

thebartonhousesalado.com

Would you believe that the best eats and atmosphere in Salado can be found in a former hospital and morgue? Sounds spooky, but in fact, this southern steakhouse and speakeasy is the spot to savor sensational flavors and find the ambiance you seek for every occasion.

Families, friends, and even couples looking for a captivating evening will discover unparalleled dining experiences at The Barton House. Tantalize your taste buds with their signature cocktails while indulging in their juicy and tender ribeyes, rich and creamy lasagna, and savory Texas pork chops stuffed with bacon. There’s also the option to explore an array of fabulously foreign flavors at their special tasting events.

“The first Thursday of every month, we do a taste of the world chef series. These aren’t items that are on the menu everyday and aren’t typically found in a small town,” owner Clinton Harwell shared. “We’ll also host winemakers and owners from different vineyards, which are always educational and fun experiences. You get to taste the wines and have lunch with them and learn about their wine.”

Needless to say, The Barton House’s delectable dishes and impressive wine selection, paired with the historic charm of this rustic estate will provide a mouthwatering and memorable experience. Tables fill up fast though, so head to their website to snag a reservation before your visit!

Retail Therapy

THE SECRET TO KEEPING YOUR SPIRITS BRIGHT

It’s supposed to be the most wonderful time of year, but for those who find themselves juggling hostess duties, work deadlines, family events, and the monumental task of Christmas shopping, it can be hard to feel the joy of the season. That’s why it’s so incredibly important to take a moment to slow down and prioritize yourself. If Santa gets milk and cookies, it’s only fair that you get to indulge in a few treats as well. We took a sleigh ride through town and found the perfect presents to help you pamper yourself and put some sparkle back into your season.

1

Morrison’s Gifts

Waco’s oldest family-owned gift shop, Morrison’s Gifts, is a spectacular spot to snag some serenity this holiday. While they have gifts for every occasion, owner Sally Dickenson notes that finding peace is as simple as shopping for a candle and devotional book.

“Every morning, sit down, light the candle, and spend 10 to 15 minutes reading a few pages and getting in a little quiet time. Then, when you smell that scent again, it will bring to mind what you were doing when you were burning it,” she stated. Add in a cute coffee mug filled with hot cocoa and a wonderfully soft blanket from the shop, and you’ll quickly find yourself in a relaxing Hallmark holiday movie moment.

2

NuGenesis Medical Spa

After calming your mind, it’s time to focus on your body. The harsh weather that accompanies the winter months can make anyone feel a little less merry and bright. Thankfully, NuGenesis Medical Spa has some amazing products and services that can help your skin match the radiance of the season.

Their DiamondGlow Facial exfoliates, extracts, and infuses the skin and leaves you with a glow that is sure to make you feel replenished. However, if you want to retain that sparkle, medical esthetician and injector Jody Paschal notes that you should splurge on one skincare product above all else.

“It’s always important to take care of your skin and the most important thing is having a sunscreen. Our IMAGE Skincare line has some of the best sunscreens around,” Paschal added. These double duty sunscreens will hydrate and nourish your skin, while also protecting it, which makes them the gift that keeps on giving.

3

Splendid Oaks Chocolates

And if sugar plum fairies are dancing in your head, Splendid Oaks Chocolates can be the best treat for your soul to enjoy right before bed. Founder and Head Chocolatier Kevin DeVries has been crafting artisan chocolates for six years and his shops offer Waco residents exceptional confections that are made with ingredients from all over the world and look more like mini works of art than delectable candies.

“It’s a four day process to make our chocolates. We work from the outside in and we hang our hats on our fillings. If you want to try something that’s a truly artisan product, that’s crafted using high attention to detail, and is made without cutting corners, Splendid Oaks is the spot to shop,” DeVries stressed. With 31 rich and flavorful chocolates to choose from, customers can customize their perfect sampling of sweetness to savor throughout the season.

The Journey from Surviving to Thriving

Wellness. It’s a word used a lot with many interpretations, but what is wellness? It’s something I’ve thought a lot about lately. Is wellness being happy at home? Is it being fulfilled at work or with our relationships? Is wellness being spiritually sound, physically fit, and well-rested?

I probably speak for a lot of us, that most days, I’m lucky to feel I’ve achieved any one of those things. The most common definition of wellness is “the state of being in good health, especially as an actively pursued goal.”

But how do we define good health? For me, I feel my best when I take the time to take care of myself. I feel in good health when I’m eating healthy, exercising, resting, spending time with God in prayer, pouring into my family, and finding ways to give back.

But I’m the first to admit I’m bad at the daily pursuit of wellness.

I tend to think I’m not alone. If wellness was easy, we wouldn’t have so much depression, anxiety, mental health struggles, and obesity.

I am guilty of blaming my times of bad health on circumstances.

then I realize my first conversation with Him is when I lay down to sleep which, by the way, is hours too late.

Sometimes as a mom I even foolishly wear busyness and a lack of self-care as a badge of honor; a way of ensuring others’ needs are met first, but I know the best version of me isn’t possible without taking time for intentional wellness.

“I know the best version of me isn’t possible without taking time for intentional wellness.”

I’m too busy to grocery shop for healthier options. Work is demanding. The kids’ schedules are overwhelming. Taking time for quiet moments with God often gets lost in the chaos of life, and

There’s another definition that describes wellness as “the act of practicing healthy habits on a daily basis to attain better physical and mental health outcomes, so that instead of just surviving, you’re thriving.”

Don’t we all want to be more than just here?

Thriving through wellness. And that sounds like a goal I’d like to achieve.
