One of the coolest things I have seen over the last few months is the number of people on Facebook that say, “I wish I lived in Modesto” when we post some of the great things happening in town. This is music to my ears. It is true my friends, there really are so many things happening, for what ever it is you need, from music, to community events, volunteer projects, Rockin Holidays or Modesto On Ice and ModShop. There are a lot of things that make cities the same, you know “those” statistics, but what ModestoView is all about is showcasing the things that make us interesting and special. And there are a lot of them. I don’t know about you, but the conversation at my house is not “what are we going to do?” but “What do we have to miss?” This is a real and serious, but good to have, problem. Thankfully I have the ModestoView calendar to keep me in line. You know, with problems come opportunities. Opportunities for our city to shine bright. Just

like the epic and amazing new Rockin’ Holiday Tree for 10th St Plaza’s Rockin’ North Pole. This has been one of many favorite projects for the ModestoView and Sierra Pacific Warehouse Group teams. Teaming up with Brian Friend, aka Laser Voodoo, turning 10th St into retro winter wonderland for the people of our city to enjoy, making downtown a place to gather and celebrate. Events like this, ModShop, ArtWalk, MAMA Awards, Graffiti Summer, Holiday parades and MoBand Concerts in the Park bring our community together and really make Modesto unique. Think about how many other cities have these kind of things, not that many. We are already planning ways to make next year even more exiting next year. If you have ideas of your own, let me know. I love history. I truly believe that you have to know your history to have a successful future. It makes us who we are, and can give us that feeling of civic pride. On my giving list this year is the Ken White/Touchstones book Life and Times of Modesto. This is a wonderful snapshot of who we are, and the stories that have made us who we are. I was fortunate to have written the chapter about Graffiti and the history of Cruising. Our Rockabilly, Graffiti

It is so very exciting that our locally produced magazine with a mission to “Serve Civic Pride Daily” took top national honors. NUTCRACKER
One of Modesto’s finest traditions is the annual Central West Ballet’s Nutcracker. This is a rite of passage for many a Modesto area dancer, and so may families have been part of the Nutcracker experience. Not only is this is a family and kid friendly performance, in length and design, it is designed to include over 100 performers. This event should not be missed, and the beauty of the Gallo Center lobby is great for Christmas photos. Special this year, I will get to be a part of this show as I take on the role of Mother Ginger. Yes, this will be a sight to see, but I really want to do a good job and feel honored to be invited to part of this tradition during the December 9th 2 pm matinee. It’s holiday shopping time once again, and supporting local artists for those original gifts is easy to do in Modesto. Plenty of artists have inventory for those gift needs, and local art and craft fairs and events all over the county. Consider a purchase of original art for those special persons on your gift list, and sneak a couple in for yourself. Galleries to consider include Chartreuse Muse, Tri-Chromatic Gallery, Mistlin Gallery, and on December 7th, see what Chella has in her annual holiday showcase at Trewin Framery out on Pentecost. Ed Cesena is the featured artist at Barkin Dog Grill this month, with some real music-themed bargains on Ed’s acrylic and watercolor works featured at the Dog. Ed turned 89 this year. Mistlin Gallery features their annual Home for the Holidays show, with diverse selection from local artists, and check the gift box area for locally created ceramics, jewelry, fabric works and small framed or matted works. I have a couple available in that show, but they go fast. Two of mine entered, sold before the show was hung. Crow Trading has unique items, including local artists. Deva has art on the walls with a price tag. And Art Walk occurs in
time for late purchase gifts at all the Art Walk locations. And if looking for upscale art from Las Vegas, Yvette LaForce hangs her art through February 1 at Barkin Dog starting with Art Walk. Helen Million will be featured in an Art Walk display at Ralston’s Goat. Check all the Art Walk locations for affordable art, and stop in at Queen Bean. You never know what the Black Sheep Market artists doing, so check the dates. Need a break in shopping to create your own masterpiece? Art Time and Sip Wine might have an opening for you. Wine and Art goes well together. Last month’s Art Walk debut of the Art and Poetry booklet “Woman Nakedly Painting Flowers Drinking Wine” at Ralston’s Goat proved it with sales of ten percent of the press run. Gordon B. The holiday season is in full swing! There are winter concerts to attend, shopping to complete, food to prepare, friends and family to celebrate. There are special annual events to embrace: the Dickens Faire at the McHenry Museum and the McHenry Mansion. The family friendly event at the McHenry Museum begins at 9 AM-noon on Saturday, December 2nd. Getting Frosty at December is a month of sweets; we’re talking cakes, pies, pastries, cookies, hot cocoa and of course, gingerbread houses! All the sweets! For your sweet needs this month, we recommend Frost Bakery. You might recognize the name if you’ve visited them at their old location in Turlock. This gem has been a secret for far too long, and we’re getting the word out on their delectable treats, lovingly hand made by owner Shelly Koch and her talented staff. Shelly started baking as a child, and remembers that her Christmas present when she was 9 was a baking class. One of her first jobs was decorating cakes and she never stopped. She opened Frost Bakery in Turlock 10 years ago, but now carries on the Frost tradition here in Modesto, which has been open for the last 5 years. Everything is made from scratch with fresh local ingredients, and she is liberal with the butter-her favorite ingredient! “I love the science of baking, how all the ingredients work together, and I love mastering a recipe. I’m a baker not only because I love creating and decorating but I enjoy being a part of people’s celebrations. The birthdays, weddings, baby showers, it’s special to be a part of it all.” When you walk in, you become the most important person in the store. You become a part of the Frost family. Your food and dessert is made as perfect as possible, with the intention you savor every bite and every drop. She was inspired by the book, “Setting the Table” by Restaurateur Danny Meyer, and lives by the belief that people don’t come for the muffins (you can get muffins anywhere!), people come for the atmosphere, the customer service, and the feeling that they are important and appreciated. I definitely could feel that during my first visit, a month after their doors opened. I often head over with a book and buy a “coffee of the day”, sippin’ away in the lounge until I’ve lost track of time. (Get extra whipped cream! They have the best whipped cream in the world!) It’s a perfect place to laze about, especially during nippy weather because this place truly turns into a winter wonderland.

The last few years I know I am not the only one that has been excited for the year to come to an end. Not because of New Years Eve Parties or Festivus but because there will be a new Star Wars release. Here in Modesto #homeofStarWars we do it up big. Tuesday, December 5th 7 pm at the Main Auditorium at MJC East. Enjoy a classical evening of Verdi to Vader with the MJC Community Orchestra. Yeah, we take Star Wars serious here in Modesto. Thursday, December 14th we will be able to catch Star Wars-The Last Jedi for the first, but not the last time for most of us. Rockin’ Holiday will celebrate the premiere of a Star Wars Themed night. Lodge Pole Pickers will once again go intergalactic and be rockin’ the Plaza. Storm Troopers and Jedi will descend on the 10th Street Plaza. Make sure you all come out and join us for an out of this world experience. Saturday, December 16, Central Valley Costumers, 501st, NorCal Cosies and others, will be staging a take over of 10th Street Plaza once again in conjunction with Brenden for The Last Jedi. UNPLUGGED A Little Bird Told Me by Aaron Rowan

So there I was, helping load gear into the moon-house for a concert, when a hawk swooped down in pursuit of a pigeon. The pigeon crashed into the window right next to the door, not a foot from where I stood, and then flew into the moon-house where it perched first atop the air duct, and then decided to nest inside the duct. It took us the better part of an hour to wrangle that bird and send it back to its flock. Then, about three weeks before Thanksgiving, we were about to begin an afternoon of Latin jazz when a turkey showed up to wander about right outside the venue. I hope he enjoyed the sweet sounds that were served up - a last bit of fun before he got served up himself. This month at Moon & Sixpence, we’re going to host some feathered friends who aren’t showing up uninvited. The Littlest Birds offer a gentle, harmony-fueled brand of twang that evokes the dusty back roads and wide open spaces of the American West while remaining deeply rooted on a back porch somewhere in Appalachia. The band features Sharon Martinson on banjo/vocals, Michael Kirkpatrick on mandolin/vocals, Rob Hansen on fiddle, and Roger Sideman on bass. Opening up the concert is Taylor Murphy,
recent winner of the first annual La La Lodi Songwriting Contest. She’ll be joined by her friend Josh Beasley for a joint set of Americana that’s unabashedly bold and peacefully intimate. Sunday December 3 - doors open at 2:30 and music starts at 3:00. $10 general admission. Thursday night 12/7, we’ll be presenting trumpeter, educator, composer, and arranger Joe Mazzaferro and his jazz quintet, celebrating the release of his debut album. Joe has performed with many jazz greats including Dave Brubeck, Christian McBride, Wycliffe Gordon, Lewis Nash, and many more. Doors 7pm, concert 7:30pm, $20. And for our final presentation of 2017, it’s Modesto Unplugged’s fifth annual ELEGY, our tribute night honoring the musical souls we’ve
METAL Remembering Abraham Guerrero We lost a son, a brother, a husband, a friend

and a part of the Modesto Metal scene on the evening of November 6th 2017. Gone but never forgotten, Abe was a part of our metal family, hailing from Los Banos. He leaves behind a wife, our beautiful brutal metal Jenna and her son Logan. Abe was a bad ass on guitar. He could shred and growl with the best. He was in MAMA award winning, Brutal Innocence, a band that I met when I first started hanging out in Modesto. As we grieve, each and every one of our metal and music community has been reaching out and we thank you for it. A celebration of Life will be happening in January, we will be throwing a metal show, and party, just like Abe wanted. He will remain forever in our hearts. 2017 Modesto Area Music Award Metal winner, HellHeart, just came home from tour in Mexico and I had a few random questions I was curious about. MV: Did anyone find romance on tour? HH: Haha, we’ll as far as romance goes, let’s just say yeah, some of us had some fun. But I don’t really want to go into detail out of respect. MV: Right on!
by Eve Oberlander MV: What did you eat on tour? (I’m a foodie, let’s be honest) HH: We ate a lot of the local food, going to different taco shops and street vendors. The food was amazing. We ate our weight in Tacos, lol. MV: Was traveling in a foreign country dangerous at any time? HH: We never felt unsafe, everyone there is super friendly, there’s a huge sense of community. Everyone we met was nice and super helpful. There was one corner in TJ where we got stopped by the police but they just wanted to ask us some questions. We got scared for a second but it turned out fine. MV: What was your favorite stop? Venue? Place to play? HH: I think our favorite stop was Saltillo at a place called Pizza Rock. The town was absolutely beautiful and the fans were amazing. The best venue to play was definitely Café Iguana, it’s an almost Ace of Spades size venue. It’s inside an

lost in the past year. Tom Petty, Gregg Allman, Chuck Berry and several others will be remembered on this magical evening, which features performances by The Poor Valley Band, Patty Castillo Davis, The Darcys, Taken Roads, Jason Winfree (Red Dog Ash), and special guests. old castle. The place was crazy and the sound and light show we had was amazing. MV: What were the fans like and what did they say to you? HH: The fans were all super amazing and passionate about the music and loved being a part of the show. We were signing all kinds of things, taking pictures with all sorts of people; it was incredibly humbling to have so many new people who love our music. HellHeart tells me they had an amazing trip and tour in Mexico and they’ve already been asked to come back. Details are still being worked out but they may be heading back next summer. ROCKABILLY Rockin Holidays Rockin the Plaza! by Jennifer Allsup Once again we are bringing back a month of Rockabilly-Blues, Psychobilly music to the 10th street plaza. Yes friends, we celebrate the music that is native to Modesto. So many genres, including rock and roll, all point back to the music of Maddox Brothers and Rose that began here in Modesto in 1938. We bring this roots music to our annual holiday festival in 10th St Plaza and this year it is more rockin’ than ever. There will be live music in 10th St Plaza each Thursday, Friday and Saturday from Dec 2 through Dec 23. Don’t forget your FREE Rockin Santa pictures Kicking it off after the parade of lights December 2nd, with a collaboration of musicians that are no stranger to old fashion and new music altogether. HOLIDAY We have really rockin’ news for you all. We are so pleased to present the 5th Annual Rockin Holiday celebration. This will be the 4th year in 10th St Plaza. We wanted to recreate the retro feel of the downtown Modesto of Christmas Past, with the real traditions, the garland, the lights, and even the music and fun of our streets in downtown Modesto. We created Rockin’ Holiday for 10th St, and partnered up with the Downtown Improvement District and the City of Modesto to build a classic Rockin North Pole in 10th St Place. We brought back the feel of the 50s and the 60s and introduced a whole new generation to the excitement and the happiness of a decorated downtown Modesto. We introduced Rockin’ Santa, Rockin’ Elves, Rockin’ North Pole and even Rockin’ Snow! This year, we are going all Disney and have created the 50 foot tall Rockin’ Pixel Show Tree that featuring a nightly programmed animated light show created by Brian Friend of Laser Voodoo that will be something to see! We are connecting with Modesto On Ice so that it is even more fun and exciting.

You may tour the beautiful McHenry Mansion, which will be decorated for the holidays as it was in Victorian Times. Docents dressed in period clothing, and stationed throughout the home, will be available to answer questions about the history and artifacts of this beautiful Victorian house. INTER Some of the most incredible people and talents are right
under your noses. It is amazing that we are so lucky to have these kinds of people living here in Modesto. If you have been to a show at the State, or the Portal or maybe even in the streets of Modesto at XFest or Luckyfest, you may have seen the fantastic lighting by Brian Friend, a.k.a Laser Voodoo. What you learn is that there is so much more to a community when you look at who is behind the scenes; the artists, the coders, the directors and the craftspeople that bring ideas to life. These are the people that I love the most, as they push, challenge and inspire. As we get ready for our 2017 Rockin Holiday, meet Brian Friend, the creative behind the new 50 ft. tall Rockin’ Pixel Tree in 10th St Plaza. I have been lucky to work with Brian on many projects and he has made our band Third Party look like a pro touring band so we play like a touring band. As you will read, good lighting brings the best out of people and is the smoke in front of the mirror. Middagh Goodwin caught up with Brian as he was building the new tree. ModestoView: Tell us a little about yourself? About your upbringing in the church? What led you to Modesto? Brian Friend: I was born and grew up in northern California. Ukiah to be exact. It was a church driven community. I come from a long line of ministers myself. I was a musician at a very young age and played in church every Sunday and toured to local Native American reservations playing religious music. I grew up there, but at 19, it was time to change my life. I moved to Modesto due to a job offer. I met my lovely wife, and my rock my most significant supporter, Shannon here in Modesto and also met the most awesome people and friends you could ever know. I love all my friends here. In ’98 I moved to the bay area to pursue my dreams of playing music and doing stage lighting. I was also doing construction on some huge jobs like the San Francisco airport and skyscrapers. We were there for about a decade or so and came back to Modesto by choice. We came home. MV: What is your musical background, was your family musically inclined? BF: Yes, my whole family is musically talented for the most part. Mostly church music. I was always a closet rocker since I was a little tike. I discovered punk rock at 13 from my brother. It was fresh and new, and I loved it! We started a punk band. Since then, I’ve been in metal bands, alternative bands, in fact, I was the original drummer for Wicked Hickey and Netherworld here in Modesto. Later in San Francisco, I was in a popular space-rock/deathrock/goth band called Galaxxy Chamber. We had a radio and TV show and gigged al lot of cool events with fire dancers, puppeteers and all kinds of stuff. I was also in a pretty fantastic band called the Floating Corpses. Our shows were off the hook nuts, and people lost their minds. It was my favorite band to date. I’ve been a signed musician a couple few times and had a couple of popular songs. Music changed for me when I started performing for TV commercials. That kind of altered things for me musically. MV: Do you play in a band? Tell us more about them and what you do? BF: I don’t play as often as I should. I do play the drums with my friends but have no drive to want to play music as a career.
MV: How long have you been doing lights, how did you get started? What motivates you? BF: I started doing lighting 30 years ago when I was 13 years old. My first gig was sitting in for lighting at a fair for a pageant show and talent show, it sparked something special. Since then I’ve done theatrical to political rallies to fashion shows to drag shows, ballet, big magic shows and what I love the very most, “concert lighting”. There is nothing like reactions to a live audience. I get to help make a brilliant show not only the audience loves, but the bands play as hard as they can in reaction. Lighting can change moods, it creates excitement and tickles your brain. It’s real art, and the stage is my canvas. Sounds cheesy but its true. It’s a passion. MV:What are some of the memorable shows/events/bands that you have done lights? BF: Oh wow, that’s a huge question. I’ve worked with a lot of huge talent. Anywhere from James Brown, John Lee Hooker to the Marleys to electronic icons and rock gods. From Metallica, Misfits, Gwar, Rammstein, Motorhead to Grateful Dead and Company to Tenacious D to JayZ and Black Eye Peas. My favorite has to be James Brown and Tenacious D. My most favorite of all time is my shows with my best friends here in Modesto and my favorite local band DAM. MV: How far have you travelled to do the Voodoo that you do? BF: I’ve travelled ALL over the map, “of Modesto”, up Briggsmore and down Tully (laughs). Mostly I’ve been a California guy. But all over up and down. MV: What questions do you ask yourself when creating a new stage design? BF: I always seek something new and creative. I don’t try to be the best lighting designer, that’s impossible. In art such as painting or sculpting, how could you claim the best artist? It’s impossible so I won’t ever try. I just only look to inspire, to capture a moment and to entertain. I love to dazzle an audience.

MV: Where is your favorite place in Modesto to do or have done lights at? BF: I’ve done some pretty impressive and great shows at The FatCat, but my favorite shows were at the State Theatre and St. Stan’s/Heros. MV: Who are some of your favorite local bands to do lights? BF: Dam, The Flowers, Triple D, Third Party, Chosen Few, Lodge Pole Pickers, Doug Petty and the Chartbreakers, 17Ten, Plastic Meteor shower and Bedheads MV-If you had an unlimited budget what would you do? BF-Go on a nice Vacation ha haaaa. As far as lighting goes? I would love to do more Monumental lighting installments for millions to see. I’ve entertained millions of people in my life, but Monumental lighting is a whole new world of entertainment. It is a neat way to express art in the light. MV: Outside of concerts, what else have you used your skills with lights, laser and colors? BF: I’ve done lighting for TV, Movies, music videos and as mentioned theatrical lighting. I’ve worked in design for clubs and landscape applications. MV: You have worked with ModestoView and Sierra Pacific on making it snow and creating the lighted tree for Rockin’ Holidays in downtown Modesto. How has it evolved and can you tell us more about this year’s tree. What is unique about it and what can we expect BF: I remember the talks before it even began. We would shoot ideas back and forth about it. Finally, a meeting was presented, and the first one happened. It was at St. Stan’s/Hero’s with fireblowing stilt walkers and killer bands. We turned that place into a snowy blizzard haha. I did a cool laser show to an awesome soundtrack. I still have it saved on my hard drive and play it in my studio from time to time. It’s inspiring to see. The very next year Chris Murphy had us move it all over to 10th St Plaza with a huge plan. Well, it’s been growing and growing to be a family tradition. With all the fast paced life we live in its extra special to create something wholesome that families can have special holiday memories that are not just at the mall or shopping. Its a place to stop life for a moment and look at the here and now and our friends, families and loved ones. Life is too short not to stop time for a moment and enjoy your family in a special holiday memory to enjoy for a lifetime. This year is a fantastic time to come out to Rockin Holiday. We are unveiling the most spectacular tree. Its set to be the world’s tallest pixel show tree. Hundreds of hours invested in bringing you the most incredible tree in lighting art. It will dazzle, mesmerize, hypnotize, and tickle your senses. It will move your body to the soundtrack of classic to current selections of favorites also including a couple of songs of our local musical talent mixed in. It’s something not to miss. It’s the only one in the world of its kind. I wish and hope to see everyone out there enjoying our creation. I am so thankful for all the support this community has given me. By Tasha Williams  The holidays are such a wonderful time to celebrate the lives of the ones who are near and dear to your heart. Hugs and kisses are shared among friends, family, and loved ones. Gifts are exchanged and we tell each other how much we care. We spend so much time and effort trying to find the perfect gift and more often than not, the gifts can get really expensive. But imagine with me, (if you will), how fantastic it would be to actually make a plan on NOT spend-
ing a dime on gifts this year? Imagine if you actually called a family meeting and told everyone, “This year, we are not going to buy gifts with money, we are simply going to exchange gifts that didn’t cost us anything this year. Instead, we are going to give gifts that are from the heartâ€?!  Obviously, this news may not go over well with the children, but you can make it really fun! Suggest making a little book with hand written promise notes inside that can be torn out. Some of the notes could say things like, “I promise to do the dishes at your requestâ€? OR “I promise to give you a hug at your requestâ€? OR “I promise to wash the outside of the car and detail the inside, at your requestâ€?. Or maybe you could simply use Mod Podge to create a gift. My family makes photo coasters and we use square ceramic tiles for the pictures to go over. The holidays are a time of giving, but that doesn’t mean we need to spend a ton of cash in to show that we care. We must also remember that the holidays are a time where we should exemplify pure love and sincere affection towards the people we truly care about. Hello friends the Holidays are here and I’m sure we could all use some good cheer. I recommend you take yourself out for a nice night of music, here are my suggestions for you blues lovers out there. Kickoff your month with a great night at the Knights Ferry Saloon with My band the Poorhouse Millionaires and Rob Hill Band. It will be a night of root music and good friends. On the 2nd I will be over at the Cow Track Lounge in Oakdale with my other act the Cryin’ Shame. If you are into a little drive over to Visalia you can check out Robert Cray at the Fox on the 3rd. On the 6th and the 20th at Ralstons goat in a night of Comedy and music called Poorhouse Millionaires and Friends. Show starts at 8 and is free to all. Ray Vazira and I will be over at Bauhaus on the evening of the 12th and again on 26th. On the 9th, you have some options. Tracy folks can come see me with the Poorhouse Millionaires at Sandwich Cousens. In Sac Dennis Jones will be over at the Torch Club or you can stay close to home and catch John Clifton Band at the Barkin Dog. Rockin right along to the 15th you can catch Coco Montoya at one of my favorite veniues the Center for the Arts in Grass Valley. On
the 16th is a big event at the Portal called Blue Christmas. I will be there with the Cryin Shame along with the Catfish Daniel Band. All Portal shows are a benefit for Hope Haven West. Then on the 17th you can see Rick Estrin and the Nightcats at the Powerhouse in Folsom. ONe More show to mention and then it’s all a wrap, another year in the books. On the 22nd Poorhouse Millionaires are back at the 108 Sports Lounge in RIverbank. It’s a great room, if you haven’t been you should come check it out. Happy Holidays to you all. COMEDY Podcasts and More by Felicia Aleman Hello, hello, hello. Tere are bells to be jingled, halls to be decked and toes to be mistle-ed. So you ask “How can I enjoy fabulous local comedy when I’m so busy?” PODCASTS! Listen to podcasts anytime online and get to know your local comics from the privacy of your own home with the option of being pants-less which is not allowed in public spaces. Most podcasts follow a traditional talk show format. There are also more specific podcasts like The Walt Vault which supports all things Disney and Good Reel Hunting which discusses movies from the 90’s. A list of podcasts from the 209 comics is at the end of this column. This month I interviewed Rhoda Ramone, host of the Good Reel Hunting podcast as well as the comic responsible for the very funny video that introduced the Best Comedy Nominees at the 2017 MAMA Awards. Rhoda started Good Reel Hunting because of her love of films and had enjoyed getting to know more about her guests. Rhoda is just starting her podcast and bought used equipment--a mixing board and two mics but added that there were many options available in all price ranges. Please see the full interview

workouts may have gotten shorter. It’s OK! Just 10 minutes a day may be all you need for the month of December, so that you can enjoy these most important Holiday times with our friends and family. Some of you in fitness may already have a single jumping rope, while others may have the Double Dutch skipping method mastered, such as many of us in the View Crew. (Double Dutch uses 2 ropes at one time with 3 or more friends.) If you’re flying solo, it’s cool. Just hop over to any of your local retailers and grab yourself a jump rope. They are fairly inexpensive and your kids might even follow your workout lead. In fact they might be able to jog your memory on how to jump rope once again correctly. Below are a few facts on how efficient jumping rope can be in any workout for just 10 minutes a day. Come January, we can all get back to our regular workout schedule, but for the month of December let us all invest more time for the reason of the season, faith, family, food, Santa and most important that combine all of the above, The Spirit of Giving to those in need. great December tips. 1. Jumping rope burns more than 10 calories a minute while strengthening your legs, butt, shoulders, and arms. And it doesn’t take long to reap major rewards. You can burn more than 200 calories in two 10-minute sessions each day (that’s 1,000 calories a week)! 2. Jumping rope burns a significant number of calories. A 160-pound person burns about 730 calories in 60 minutes of jumping rope. A 200-pound person burns about 910 calories and a 240-pound person burns approximately 1,090 calories. Jumping 600 times will not take 60 minutes. 3. For fat loss, jumping rope is a low-impact exercise that helps you lose fat all over your body. But does it burn belly fat? Unfortunately, it’s impossible to target one particular area for fat loss, belly fat included. Instead, weight loss occurs evenly all over your body, including your belly. 4. If you wish to burn up to 350 calories per day, then jump rope at a challenging pace for 20 minutes. If you want to burn a large amount of calories, more than 500, then jump at a fast pace for at least 40 minutes. Performing an hour of jumping at a challenging pace will burn up to 750 calories. Rockin’ NYE by Leia Johnson
Modesto’s newest electronic duo, The Marbles, are already shaking up our music scene. Brooke Harvey and Tristian Napoleone just released “Soda Machine”, their first EP. These four tracks highlight the immense originality the group already possesses. The first track, “Pool Table” displays Brooke’s ethereal vocals paired with Tristian’s keyboard, and leaves you in a dream-like state. Check out the EP: https:// soundcloud.com/user-622789386 The two have a shared love of electronic dream pop group, Beach House, as well as Kero Kero Bonito, Daft Punk and Gorillaz, which heavily influence them in their sound. Both are good friends with MAMA award winning, The Flowers, who gave The Marbles easy acess to gain popularity and play shows. Brooke describes the Modesto music scene as “almost hard to not be a part of ” and explained that it was compelling because the talented community is composed of all “Modesto-ians”. Once the twenty year olds decided to pursue the project, opportunities to
play popped up all over. The Marbles played Modspot, an excellent venue on J Street, November 10th with The Flowers and described it as their first ‘big’ show. “Modspot was sick!”, Brooke tells me, “I feel like there was a good handful of people that were just out hitting the town that stopped to look inside”. This is what makes the Modesto music scene so unique, it is accessible to join and easy to support. The Marbles are going to be playing some shows this winter, so follow their Instagram @the.marbles and also be sure to follow ModSpot Event Center on Facebook for information about their upcoming events. Modspot is hosting an “All Ages Rockin’ NYE” this New Years! This event will be displaying the musical acts and bands coming from the VMIRocks School of Rock program and will be featuring a magic show from Magician Shawn Durham. This event will be so much fun, and alcohol free, so it’s a great event for your kids to go to have a great time! I hope everybody has wonderful holidays!! Watching the winter fog roll in this evening, makes Ms. M question, “where did 2017 go?” and smile. I hope it’s been as good to you as it has been to moi. Take a free tour through the mansion, grab a carriage ride and don’t forget the kettlecorn, hot apple cider while you pick up gifts from local artisans and craftsmen. by Mary Layton I love to laugh. When we were children, my brother and I were always laughing even though we didn’t always have a reason to. Sometimes we were reprimanded: Can’t you be a little more serious? To us a lot of the adults were acting weird and we enjoyed making fun of them, imitating the way they talked and walked. We promised each other that we would always stay silly, no matter what. Decades have passed and sadly I’m not so silly anymore. I have become a full-fledged adult. Oh no! Life gets more serious the older we get. It’s easy to forget to laugh. I believe by taking ourselves so seriously all the time we become too self-absorbed. We might be too strict or too aggressive, lacking humility and compassion for ourselves as well as others. Sometimes I think it’s ridiculous how seriously I’m taking myself. I’d like to reclaim my laughter. That lightness of being, the pleasure and freedom
