GREETINGS VIEW
Wow, we made it through Halloween, the MAMAs, repelling down a building, and so much more in October. It is amazing how busy we all get this time of year. Rebecca and I have been working on our family calendar through the end of the year and it is just JAMMED! This is a good and bad thing. Bad in that everyone needs to take a breather here and there, and good that there is so much happening here in the Modesto area that we need to enjoy and support. In just a few weeks it will be Veteran’s Day, then the opening of Modesto on Ice, Thanksgiving, Rockin’ Holiday and so much more.
It’s fall and it’s starting to cool down the mornings and the evenings are brisk. Seems like the leaves are still green and the falling part is a ways off. Who loves the smell of morning coffee? How about that first sip aroma? I am one of those people that find peace and bliss with a cup of coffee and a real newspaper. We are in the middle of a Modesto coffee renaissance. The Queen Bean is in new capable hands, Penny
University is open, Lucille is packed all the time, and Mocha Magic and Bake Shop tease us with fresh pastries and coffee. There are great local coffee options, we have local roasteries and we have one of the leading coffee gurus here in town, Tony Serrano and we chat with him this month. Most importantly, we have more place to hang out, talk, discus and share our lives with. That’s the cool thing about a coffee shop and café.
There are some important things we need to do this month and need to take care of, like the people in our community. This is the month of Thanksgiving and as we go into the holiday season, it’s what we can be doing for others that really matters. There are those that don’t have a family Thanksgiving, or warm clothes, blankets, or even a hot meal for that matter. This is when we rally together. Two really big things are the Kettle Kick off and the Thanks4giving dinner. The Gospel Mission is getting ready for winter and Love Modesto/Stanislaus is preparing Comfort kits and has a
new volunteer center. Let’s do this friends. We all have something we can do. The ModestoView crew will be raising funds for Salvation Army with a Kettle Kick off team, so once again, I’ll be reaching out and I’m thanking you now for extending a hand and a donation.
On November 24 at 2 pm, there will be a special fundraising concert at the State Theatre for our friend Patty Castillo Davis, who is battling cancer. There is a story in this issue about how you can help.
So, we know the end of the year is two months away. Let’s make the most of it. Plan your times with friends and families and be a part of our community and really make some connections here in town. We have so much to catch up on. And I leave you with this. We are all about local connections, supporting our local people and businesses. These are the people we count on and are there for us, so let’s remember who puts their dollars back into our community when we are out on Black Friday and shopping small.
I am thankful and grateful for all of you and thank you for being a part of ModestoView.

Modesto’s coffee culture is on the rise as new coffee centric cafes and coffee shops open. New Queen Bean owner Ruhi Sheikh enjoys a warm latte as we head into the fall season. Ruhi and her husband Sam “Ninja” Poet are the new owners of the Queen Bean and will be renovating and expanding this art and culture centric coffee shop. @queenbeancoffeehouse MJ Mangano has created a wonderful fall image that makes you wake and almost smell the coffee. Thanks to our designer Pete Grimaldi for putting together such a great issue this, and every month.

Veterans Day is November 11
We remember and recognize those that have served and still serve today. We can’t forget the sacrifices that the few make for so many. It is important to remember as we face a more complicated world and we only go into battle only when necessary that there are so many ready to serve and all of their lives are valuable. Their stories and history are important to learn and their experiences can teach you a lot. So let’s make sure that we are flying our flags on November 11. Originally known
as Armistice Day to commemorate the end of hostilities at the end of World War I on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month, it was renamed Veterans Day in 1954

November is a time of falling leaves, Fall Festivals, holiday gift lists, fundraisers, and Dia de Los Muertos. We covered a lot last month and may have missed the memo. Stanislaus Artist Open Studio 2025 weekend is April 5 and 6. Applications are available November 1. Interested artists openstudio.aos@gmail.com Application, fees, and deadlines included in the response
On November 2 and 3rd, I will be at the Riverdance Farms Fall festival with art at 12230 Livingston Cressey Rd, in Livingston. During the October Art Walk on Tenth Street, the Livingston High School art group was in Modesto. Missing the memo. I didn’t include the announcement that the October Art Walk would be the last of the 2024 Season; The Notice had not arrived by the column deadline. Art Walk has been every Third Thursday for 30 years; in case you didn’t see the announcement, some venues will be open on Third Thursday. Show up on the Third Thursday for your monthly focus on local art and artists. Dragonfly Art of Life, Peer Recovery Art Project will be open as usual, as will be eateries that feature local artists on the walls like Papachino’s. Tokyo Express, off-hours at Picasso’s, and the new and old murals up downtown. For those who miss the annual gallery showing for the Memorial Hospital
Foundation Complementary Therapy Arts Program, due to logistics this year due to the size of the show, the location changed, and it became a one-night show at the Memorial Cancer treatment building hallway at 1800 Coffee Rd. It had the best sales ever in the program’s history and was an appropriate setting for the program’s mission.
As an add-on to art shopping opportunities, the Stanislaus Arts Council Saturday Art Market is open from 1 to 4 PM on Saturdays, November 2nd, 16th, 30th, and December 14. The November 30th market will be expanded into the parking lot at 1315 J Street, the same Saturday after Thanksgiving as the DoMo Shop schedule, which is also on the calendar. The Arts Council’s current show, Dia de Los Muertos, is open next door at Showtime Studios until November 21. The downtown Modesto festival was canceled on short notice, but Dia de Los Muertos is traditionally a November event. You can attend a festival at Lakewood Funeral Home and Memorial Park in Hughson, on Santa Fe Blvd, starting at 11 AM, November 2nd. For classes, Dragonfly Art for Life and Carnegie Arts Center in Turlock offer several. November 7 is Carnegie’s Artisan Market in Turlock. Current show in Carnegie’s Ferrari gallery is “Art of Recology” featuring artwork created from discarded
materials, show open until December 28.
November 9, the Elks Lodge hosts a crafts fair. November 9 and 10, check out the Fall Classic Art Show at 1480 Poplar Street in Oakdale, in the Social Hall, Community Methodist Church.
Sam Perstorff and Ruhi Sheikh are new owners of the Queen Bean Coffee and Social House, and they are remodeling the stage and deck to host poetry, music, art, and community events. Kristy Moore Black Sheep Market used to do art stuff there, and new DoMo Walls murals were created nearby. It is great to see them restore the venue and community events it is known for. Sam is also the instigator
of the Modesto Art Movement, which hosted its first fundraiser, “Expressions Uncorked” collaborative arts celebration at Zink House Farm in Escalon on October 25. A renewed sense of ambition and enthusiasm was palpable at the Modesto Area Music Awards, where generations of local entertainers gathered to celebrate 25 years of MAMA. This year’s Unplugged/Singer-Songwriter category recognized many more new artists than in recent years. A nomination is no easy feat for solo artists who are often self-produced, managed, and promoted. I have seen these nominees’ passion and tireless effort firsthand and in different capacities. I’ve always said that the Unplugged/Singer-Songwriter category is arguably the most multifaceted in the entire contest, simply because of each nominee’s stark individuality and artistic niche.
I was grateful to present the Unplugged award to Payton Mahoney, a young artist who has inspired me all year. She was humbled by this recognition, and I hope this milestone affirms her creative drive and undeniable musicianship. It’s exciting to note that the songwriter community should

look forward to the revival of The Queen Bean Coffee & Social House, as new owners Sam and Ruhi are committed to restoring this historic hub of music and collaboration that many of us have called home. I encourage everyone to be patient and supportive of this process. Small businesses have always been our biggest supporters and main collaborators. Artists, patrons, and businesses must work together to cultivate the vibe and culture of creative spaces throughout our city.
How lucky are we to have art and music so profoundly rooted in Modesto? The MAMA Awards tend to spark excitement and emotion, but we are better because of it. We sing louder and prouder when we stand on a foundation of community. They don’t have Grammy award-inspired red carpet parties in historic art house theaters anywhere else in the valley, guaranteed. Not to mention how Modesto continuously innovates and reiterates itself as a place for art. Our city and our music scene have known many eras. I’ve seen our town struggle to thrive in recession, lousy publicity, pandemics, you name it. But you can never take the art and eccentricity out of Modesto. We know how to renaissance.

Queen Bean’s Home: The Kerr-Maddux House
By Harrison Power @historyharrison
Nestled between office buildings at 1126 14th Street across from Graceada Park is a quaint yet stately bungalow, the Kerr-Maddux House, the last on a block originally lined with early 20th century homes. Many know the bungalow today as the Queen Bean Coffee House, but the home’s time as a residence spanned 95 years across three families, which contributed to the home’s lastability in an area of downtown which transitioned from residential to commercial. Though changes were made to convert the home into a business, remaining original features and connections to early prominent Modesto citizens highlight the significance of the Kerr-Maddux House. The original owner of the home was Mrs. Priscilla E. Kerr (1845-1913), an immigrant from England and pioneer Central Valley educator. Kerr moved to Modesto in 1903 from Salida following her husband’s death. In March 1908, she sold her large 13th Street home, and then purchased a lot on 14th Street to build a new residence for herself. By April 1908, construction on 1126 14th Street was underway, overseen by contractor F. M. Brown. Kerr requested the new home to be built in the style of a bungalow that Brown had built in Pacific Grove, which Kerr had seen while vacationing there. On December 17, 1908, the contractor was in the final stages of completing the interior finishings, bringing the cost of the home to $2,500. Five years later on June 1, 1913, Mrs. Kerr passed away at her home. The Kerr estate sold the bungalow to the second owners, Mr. Lafayette Jackson Maddux (1854-1941) and his wife Mrs. Mary Blythe Maddux (1856-1936), who were living there by 1915. They had come to Modesto circa 1880 and were both incredibly involved in civic affairs. L.J Maddux established a law practice in the fast
growing city, which led to a lengthy legal career and decades of public service in both elected and appointed positions: Stanislaus County District Attorney (1904-1915), California State Senator (1915-1919), and Stanislaus County Superior Court Judge (1934-1936) upon appointment by Governor Frank Merriam following the death of L.W. Fulkerth. Maddux also served on the Stanislaus Board of Education, Board of the Preston School of Industry, and the California Industrial Accident Commission.
Mary B. Maddux was very engaged in local affairs and had her own public service accomplishments. During World War One, Mrs. Maddux was very active in the Modesto Red Cross chapter and became its President in 1917, then later supported the production of masks to protect against the influenza pandemic in 1918. She was appointed to the County Probation Committee in 1909 and the County Welfare Commission in 1919, and served on both until 1934. On April 5, 1936, Mrs. Maddux passed away at the home. Upon the death of L.J. Maddux on October 30, 1941, the SF Examiner called him the “Grand Old Man of California Public Affairs,” and Governor Culbert Olson stated, “He was an example of American citizenship, a splendid public servant and a fine gentleman.” Later, the City would name its new youth center in West Side Park (César Chávez) in his honor, officially dedicated in 1954.
By 1942, Mr. John Aubrey Morgan (18941981) and Mrs. Estelle Bond Morgan (1902-2002) were the third owners of the bungalow, and both worked in education. Estelle Morgan was the last resident of the bungalow before the home was eventually converted into a coffee house, opening as the Queen Bean in 2004.
The Kerr-Maddux House has been the
Queen Bean’s home for nearly two decades, now owned by Ruhi Sheikh and Sam Pierstorff. When asked about the home’s history and plans for the future, Sheikh and Pierstorff said, “As stewards of Queen Bean Coffee & Social House, we are committed to building for the future while honoring its rich past. We love this historic space as much as the community, and we take our responsibility very seriously. With a deep respect for the artists and creatives who have shaped this space, we are transforming Queen Bean into a cultural arts epicenter—a place where anyone and everyone can feel at home. Our vision is to restore Queen Bean to her original beauty and make this a destination that Modesto can be proud of for years to come.” As the
Kerr-Maddux House approaches its 116th birthday in December, Modestans should share in celebrating the historic bungalow and its ties to early prominent community leaders.
Special thank you to Peter and Jeanette Dunckel for providing pictures of the Maddux Family, and to David Seymour and the MM&HS for assisting in their availability.

Thanksgiving is all about gathering, friendship, taking a break and pause to reflect on what we are grateful and thankful for. It’s for family times and if you are a new family, building new traditions and experiences that bring you back home in comfort. Obviously, it’s NOT about shopping. Thanksgiving means different things to different people and this time of year, we especially looks to what comfort and friendship are and this usually revolves around a big turkey dinner, stuffing, and all of the fixins. We all know that this is a really big deal and everyone becomes a turkey expert. Our intrepid ViewCrew has found a few places that do a nice turkey dinner year-round. We also have one very special turkey dinner that that truly brings our whole community together. I am sure that there are a few more, but we have tried and tested these and you will like them. If you know of others, please email me at chrism@modestoview.com so we can add them to the list.
The Fruit Yard – East Modesto
Modesto is lucky to have great full-service restaurants, and one of the most legendary has got to The Fruit Yard. Long-timers know, if you want the best salad bar, this is where you go. Do you want crab on the weekends or big prime rib dinners? Bell Pepper soup on Wednesday? Fruit Yard. Old school cocktails? Fruit Yard. Big breakfasts with the local farmers? Fruit Yard. Turkey Dinner? Yes, friends the Fruit Yard. Every Thursday, all year, you can enjoy turkey and the fixins. We are talking roasted tender sliced turkey, just like at home. Served with cranberry sauce, baked vegetables and here is the surprise. Under the turkey, a delicious house made cranberry and raisin stuffing. This is amazing and I asked for more. The best part, no clean up? You can wash down that last piece of pie with a spiked coffee and you are done. While I as there, many people were ordering the turkey special and they roast more than three turkeys each Thursday. If you haven’t been to the Fruit Yard lately, you are missing out. On Thanksgiving, you can celebrate at the Fruit Yard. There will be a Thanksgiving buffet from 11 am to 7 pm for $69.99. Regular breakfast starts at 6 am. You can also pre-order a complete Thanksgiving dinner for 1012 people for $199.

Noah’s Hof Brau – Downtown Modesto
Another great turkey option can be found right downtown next to the State Theatre. Many Modestans know Noah’s Hof Brau, located at 1311 J Street, as a go-to downtown destination for tasty counter-serve Chinese food. But, as the restaurant’s name and origins suggest, it is still serving the comfort food classic: hof brau plate, complete with anything needed for a Thanksgiving meal, any time of the year! While you get your choice of meat from roast turkey, roast beef, baked ham, corned beef, and BBQ pork, the hof brau lunch plate comes with mashed potatoes, stuffing, green beans all smothered in gravy, with bread and butter. The View Crew opted for the roast turkey, which is hand carved and piled high to order, and we washed it down with a sparkling apple cider!

Community Thanks4giving Meal
By Chris Murphy
For 39 years, Dan and Denise Costa have been hosting a Community Thanksgiving Meal. This is truly a unique event as it offers a special restaurant-quality Turkey dinner to those in the community that are in need, without food, or even have no Thanksgiving dinner to go to.
Growing up, even when times were very tough, Dan’s mom was holiday fanatic to make things special, so even when they didn’t have anything and were without food, they had to go to the Salvation Army. Dan wanted to create a meal that was special, like his mom would do. In 1983, this event was created to serve a nice Thanksgiving for the Salvation Army at the Velvet / Mallards commissary warehouse in downtown Modesto. Today, the Thanks4giving dinner serves nearly 2,000 people annually and is an important fundraiser for Salvation Army.
Here is how you can help.
Funds are needed to prepare the lunch and funds above go directly to the Salvation Army and Dan & Denise match whatever is raised. There is no cap. So please, donate whatever you can and any thing is welcome. If you want to volunteer for prep, set up or serving, please contact the Salvation Army directly. Make your tax deductible checks out to Salvation Army and mail to Denise Costa, 4300 Spyres Way, Modesto, Ca 95356. Please donate to this address so they know how much to match.

By Chris Murphy
I had my first real cappuccino in Italy back in 1984. In 1986 I lived in Seattle working for Raleigh Bicycles, our NW sales rep Donn Kellogg, came to our factory offices and brought me a “latte tall”. Kablam. I was hooked. The world of coffee has evolved and the nuances of the different regions, varieties and roasting methods can make coffee a very complicated product. It is just like wine and everyone has their palates. Just like we talked about in our September issue with Sciabica Olive Oil, there are experts in these fields right here in Modesto. If you want a lesson in coffee, Modesto has one of these experts in the Specialty Coffee scene.
I met Tony Serrano when the Queen Bean reopened way back in the day, and Tony had been a trainer and consultant. I learned a lot that very first day. He opened Wanderlust where Camp4 is today and more lessons were learned then as his famous Motucky Mocha gained fame (you may know it as Preservation’s Clubhouse Mocha or Caffettino’s Chaga). After helping build San Jose’s Barefoot Coffee, Modesto’s espresso world charged into the 21st Century when he opened his Serrano Social Club on J Street. He sold it to Paul Tremayne as Preservation and Tony went on to consult and develop brands with his Independent firm, The Coffee Wrangler LLC. His influence has touched every sector of the global coffee scene from seed to cup. Coffee Farmers around the World benefit from his understanding of terroir and processing. Tony is a Good Food Awards judge and has been the Master of Ceremony for over a half a dozen United States and World Barista Championships! He’s executed countless special projects and rebrands over the years, Hub Coffee in Reno the most recent. And some of you may recall that Pre-Covid he was spotted in Tye Bauer’s Bauhaus lounge emphasizing Tye’s unique brand of hospitality. All in all the first sentence in his Barista Magazine cover article was correct, “Tony Serrano is a BadAss!”
The Coffee Wrangler is focusing on the needs of our local coffee culture again. He is the consultant for Volente Coffee, with the Modesto Gospel Mission, and has created a vocational training program utilized for their New Life Program and rumor has it that Sam & Ruhi, our new
Queen Bean royalty, have asked him to help launch their new brand with staff training once some of their major remodeling is complete and equipment & Menu updates are introduced. His wife of 14 years, Joselyn, and daughters keep Tony striving for a better community. Over the years, he has become one of Modesto’s best ambassadors and we have become good friends. He is truly as his Instagram handle reads @1solidserrano
Let’s see what Tony has brewing.
ModestoVew: Why coffee?
Tony Serrano: Coffee, yeah… at first it was just one of as many jobs I could hold down while going to school in San Francisco. My first coffee gig was at a roaster in the SoMa as ‘Flavor Boy’. Not very glamorous making hazelnut-irishcream-whateveryouwant coffees. Luckily, that bad experience paled soon thereafter which helped me continue to grow. A couple of Barista Gigs showed me that I liked the daytime coffee bar positivity versus the nighttime booze bar debacle where my other jobs were.
MV: People are used to a version of popular coffee that isn’t really the true flavor, can you describe the difference between the usual cup America drinks and a specialty coffee experience?
TS: The “American” cup seems to focus on way more milk and sugar versus just coffee. Specialty Coffee reveals through careful
attention in roasting a better quality of bean that coffee has a myriad of complex flavors without having a big gulp of flavors added to mask poorly roasted beans.
MV: What was your first custom blend and why did you do it?
TS: I couldn’t tell you what those first blends were over 20 years ago but I can tell you that I approach blending coffee like an author approaches character development. Blends, to me, are personalities and I hope they tell the story intended, from a balanced and calm hero to the vibrant and enticing villain. What part do they play in a company or cafe’s offering list, it’s cast if you would?
MV: What mistakes do many first time coffee shop owners make that you could help them avoid?
TS: I could write a book about this subject, but to keep it simple… New owner operators should make a priority in equipment budgeting and bar design for efficient interaction between staff and customers before they focus on the Pinterest list of best design influences. Form follows function, people!
MV: We have a lot of Modesto experiences, but you seem to have become one of the go to people for just sheer local positivity, what drives you?
TS: Modesto is my home. I’ve lived in big cities and traveled all over the World, but this is where my heart beats and those dearest to me hang their hats. I’m proud of the community we have and every local should be honored to share what we love about home! Let’s talk about the Modesto coffee experiences, Chris. Historically, there were only a couple of coffee specific cafes, but now we are buzzing with Specialty service!
Modesto coffee. Let’s run some numbers…
1. Preservation Coffee is keeping it real with the old Social Club menu and multi-roaster style.
2. Penny University where Auni, of Preservation & Wanderlust fame, has launched with her partner, Laurel, in the old Cafe Deva J Street location after a couple of well spent years at the Modesto Certified Farmers Market.
3. Bakeshop is rocking Volente Coffee with all of Ashley’s fresh baked goodies.
4. Culture Coffee is a beautifully busy little hub from Jaimie’s small trailer roots serving Cat&Cloud with pride!
5. Caffettino is my favorite fresh roasted coffee in the Valley! Gio and Gianna are sourcing amazing fresh crop coffees and roasting on the planet’s best coffee roaster, the Loring Smart System! I love what they’re doing on Coffee Road.
6. The Queen Bean has proven its place in Modesto history with Debbie’s near 20 year offering of a classic “Coffee House” to Ruhi & Sam breathing new life and purpose as the home of the Modesto Artist Movement. I really look forward
to what’s to come and not just because of my connection creating the Around the World Mocha menu 19 years ago to being able to help where needed now!
MV: You are currently also serving as an ambassador of sorts to our culinary world, how did that happen?
TS: I was approached by DoMo & DID to narrate and host a video series that shed light on the Cuisine, Culture & Community of Modesto. We gathered video content with interviews of local restaurateurs during the week of DoMo Walls. Keep your eyes and ears peeled for multiple videos to be released before years end.
MV: Conversation is everything, one of my favorite experiences with you was sitting at the counter at Bauhaus, going through your punk / new wave 80s playlist and sampling food and wine; how important is that in a food and drink space?
TS: I take hospitality very seriously. Conversation and a playful environment makes pretty much everyone happy and comfortable, right? I know you dig it, Chris! Every retail environment I have ever worked for is treated like my home and I want my guests to know how thankful I am that they chose to visit.
MV: What is your ideal day in Modesto?
TS: I’ll start it off with espresso at Caffettino, then to the farmers market. I’ll stop by Bakeshop for Cardamom buns and s’mores cookies. If I’m lucky I get to stop at Chinn’s for a pint and some Loco Moco and if I’m the luckiest man on Earth, my lady will go for tapas at Bauhaus, whipped feta at Camp4 or Painkillers and pizza at Churchkey.
MV: Beatles or Stones?
TS: Beatles hand down, Chris. Don’t be silly. The Stones are a great blues and rock&roll band but the Beatles are everything! You
obviously never saw the video Joselyn posted of li’l Serrano at a talent show singing Black Bird acapella, did you? We raise ‘em right at the Serrano Stronghold.

BIG VIEW Gratitude
By Chris Murphy
Gratitude and thankfulness are so very important to all people. There is something profoundly magical about this time of year. The weather is changing, the night comes earlier, the food tastes better, the flavors switch from pumpkin to maple, the sweaters are out, and the fall fundraisers are underway. But mostly, it’s about tradition. My daughters are very traditional and really want to hold on to and build on their traditions for their new families. As I get older, it is wonderful to see these things evolve. Also, it’s really good to look around and find ways to share the Thanksgiving spirit with others. I’m one of those people that have a “hard no” on Christmas decorations before Thanksgiving. I think it’s really important to take these pauses to enjoy each season and holiday.
For some, it is the tradition of a morning run at the Turkey Trot and seeing your friends and family all work off their Thanksgiving dinner in advance. For some it is a game of football in the park, like the Mud Bowl and many other traditions. For others, it is switching over to the Christmas Holiday spirit on the weekend after Thanksgiving or sometimes it is just a simple meal and reminding ourselves that we are loved and care about people.
We are highlighting here some of the fun things that make the Thanksgiving season special. For some though, those memories aren’t happening and they are just grateful to make it through each day. This is a really good time to see what you can do or donate to make a difference in someone else’s life. There are some important ways you can help, some involve donations of money and others are a donation of time, and time can be really valuable. Check out the suggestions in this issue and see what fits for you.
Thanksgiving Togetherness!
What do you look forward to? Is it the Thanksgiving Day Parade? The Dog Show? Family games? Holiday baking? Walks or rides in the park? When you stop to take a break, it opens up options. Take time to share your time, unplug, do a 1-day digital detox and really connect with people. Have fun cooking together and get the kids and grandkids involved. Teach your kids to bake cookies or make hand turkeys for the table. Play Jenga, turkey bingo, and find things that are free and fun. Encourage interactions that pass on family traditions and if you are new family, start your own new traditions. It’s fun and you will learn a lot about each other. That is what I am truly thankful for.
Mud Bowl
Fall is Football Season and as we cheer on football, optimize our fantasy teams, and the snacking that goes along with it, the real payoff comes at the end of the month…many families and friends have long standing traditions, and this month have the 61st Edition of Mud Bowl at Kewin Park. Show up with your family and friends and pass this tradition down. Check out the story of the Mud Bowl by one of the founders, Ken White. www.modestoview.com/authorview-themud-bowl/ and www.modestoview.com/the-mudbowl-remembered/
MJC Turkey Trot
Thanksgiving Day
November 28 – Legion Park Ready, Set, Go! Thanksgiving can start with a sprint with some family running fun. This a great family event. What’s better than a 5K run to get out there and rev up your body and get a good work out before diving into the turkey, mashed potatoes/cauliflower or cranberry whatever, and of course the pumpkin pie. All proceeds benefit MJC’s Track and Field and Cross Country Programs! This is a family friendly 3.1 mile course on a paved path with some grass and dirt. The 1/2 mile kids run will be on grass, 1/4 mile out and 1/4 mile back. No strollers, headphones, or dogs in the 5K run. The Gobbler Walk is an event for just walkers on the same 5k course where trollers/dogs are welcomed. Easy parking, easy run and a lot of fun. Check in begins at 7:30 am and races start 8:45 for the kids and ½ and 9:30 for the 5K. Overall male and female finishers will receive a medal. T-shirts will be provided to the first 500 entrants. Pre-reg closes Nov 26. Walk up after that https://runsignup.com/Race/ CA/Modesto/MJCTurkeyTrot
Giving Season is Here!
Thinking about others is so important. There are so many needs out there and there are a couple of local organizations that could really use your support and your donation stays local gets the most out of every dollar. This is why we like the Salvation Army because over 85% of all funds received go directly to those in need and all are served without discrimination. We also support the Modesto Gospel Mission who is doing an amazing job of getting people off of the streets, and working to get them redirected. You can be assured that supporting either of these is a smart use of your valuable support dollars. It’s hard to do, but the best way to help those in need is NOT to give to people in the streets, but to give to organizations that do the most good, in the right places for the most people. Let those that know how to intercept, engage to make a difference.

Skating sessions are daily from November from November 23 all the way through January 20th. There will be many theme nights, group skates and it is really easy to learn how to skate. Community Christmas Tree
Are you busy, out of time, but still want to help families in need make a special Christmas? Please head to Vintage Faire Mall and visit the Community Christmas Tree. There are over 200 families that could use your help. As a direct result of this partnership project, approximately 2,000 youth in Modesto this year will receive Christmas gifts. For most of these children, the gifts they receive through this project are the ONLY gifts that they receive for Christmas. Shop for a gift and drop it off, or donate and they will shop for you. It is so easy to make a special day for someone that needs it. Thank you to the Modesto Sunrise Rotary and Soroptimist Clubs for their great efforts. The Giving Tree Kiosk on the 2ndfloor above Santa’s Village at Vintage Faire is staffed by Soroptimist members and volunteers - opens on “Black” Friday, November 29th and closes on December 18th at 8:00 PM.

Graffiti USA Classic Car Museum is gearing up for a series of unforgettable events on Saturday, November 9th. Ignite your passion for classic cars and warm hearts with Cars & Coffee, a Toy & Coat drive, and a one-weekend only, Museum special exhibit vehicle.
The day kicks off with the Museum’s Inaugural Cars & Coffee Event from 8AM-10AM. It’s the perfect opportunity to mingle with fellow enthusiasts, swap stories, and admire stunning classics over a steaming cup of joe. But the excitement doesn’t stop there. In the spirit of giving, West Coast Custom’s car club is hosting their Annual Coat and Toy Drive from 10AM-2PM. Visitors are encouraged to bring a coat or toy to spread warmth and joy this holiday season It’s a chance to make a difference while indulging in automotive passion.
Día de los Muertos Special Exhibit Vehicle
On November 8th and 9th, Graffiti USA proudly showcases Tina Perez-Tateo’s lovingly restored 1958 Chevrolet Impala. Tina’s stunning Impala is a moving tribute to her brother, Frank Perez, embodying the essence of remembrance that Día de los Muertos represents.
Tina’s nearly 30-year journey with this Impala is nothing short of incredible. It all began in the summer of 1996 with a serendipitous spotting and a hopeful note left on a windshield. That winter Tina and her husband Rico embarked on a three-year frame-off restoration project, fueled by the support and generosity of the Specken’s family who graciously loaned their shop space throughout the project. The result? A gleaming masterpiece, painted by Custom Concepts in factory “Glen Green” and “Snow Crest White” that’s sure to take your breath away!
But this isn’t just about a car—it’s about the remarkable woman behind the wheel. Tina Perez-Tateo is a trailblazer in our local car community. As the first woman featured in the Modesto Bee’s “My Favorite Car” series 28 years ago, she’s been breaking barriers and inspiring others ever since. A dedicated “solo rider,” Tina has tirelessly supported our local car culture and even helped lift the local cruising ban. Her passion for empowering women to move from the passenger seat to the driver’s seat is truly inspiring.

Thanks and Gratitude
First, congratulations to all the MAMAnees for the 2024 Modesto Area Music Awards, and big up to all the winners. I have said it before, and I will repeat it: The music fans in 209 are all the real winners. Thanks to everyone involved in making the event happen: The State Theatre, the Sierra Pacific Warehouse crew, Soul-fi Production for helping with sound and stage managing, all the bands that played, the presenters, Beeler Industries for the Trophies and of course VMI for the backline. Shout out to Elliot Gage, our IT and website guru, and to Carlos at Central Valley TV for broadcasting to the world.
Keep on the radar for next year by sending your gigs to events@modestoview.com. As a little bonus, we will add the local shows to our calendar. I commend Western Bound, Tea Noelle, Gotcha Covered, and Dying Breed Brewing. All four have up-to-date websites with show and booking information. You do not need a website; social media is a good tool if you use it to create those events and let people know where you are and where you have played.

AUTHOR VIEW
By Chris Murphy
Sure we have the Virginia Corridor and the Menninger Trail, but to really get out in the trees and the wild. There is a new book by local author Elaine Gorman.
Elaine taught science at Mark Twain Jr. High School and Roosevelt Jr. High School in Modesto, retiring in 2009. She has been a Yokuts Group Sierra Club outings leader for over 30 years, and is a Certified California Naturalist. She is an avid hiker and backpacker, and spends as much time as possible in the Sierra Nevada, Sierra foothills, Bay Area, and the San Joaquin Valley, exploring the wilderness and nature with her hiking pals.
VALLEY VENTURES offers 20 hikes that are easily accessible from Stanislaus and San Joaquin counties in the San Joaquin Valley of California. The narrative hike descriptions include natural and cultural history, mileage, special attractions, directions/drive time, and hiking tips. All hikes are within a two-hour driving range, and include hikes in the San Joaquin Valley, the foothills, and eastern Bay Area.
“Valley Ventures” is available at Bookish bookstore in Roseburg Square, at the Great Valley Museum at MJC West Campus, and the McHenry Museum bookstore for about $15. Check it out and you will be inspired to go hike a trail.

VOLUNTEER VIEW
By Chris Murphy
There is a civic element that really sets Modesto apart: volunteerism. Many wonderful things happen in our community thanks to a great volunteer spirit and the number of people who lend a hand. But it is hard to find the right kind of match to your interests. Love Modesto really cracked the code with their annual Love Modesto project day connecting people with projects. Now, Love Stanislaus has launched a new Volunteer Central program. This connects a volunteer project that matches your abilities and your preferences. This has been a long time coming as it pulls many different programs and organizations into a simple new ap. This is something you can do all year long.
You will help a lot of people and help yourself at the same time.

It’s the New Crush Congregation Beat Battle!
By Joe Zimmerer
I
t’s that time of year again. November brings families together, and it also brings beatmakers to the State Theatre for the Crush Congregation Beat Battle! The battle takes place on Saturday, November 16th and is not to be missed!
Sixteen beatmakers will compete against each other in an elimination-style format, using samples provided by our sponsors. This year, a new exciting twist: the final round will feature a live beat set performance battle. The two finalists will present a five-minute performance LIVE! We’ll also have a special guest performance by Weezmatic, known for his DJ and beatmaking skills with his crew, “The Bangerz,” one of the most influential hip-hop collectives in the Bay Area.
Modesto’s hip-hop scene needs events like this. Over the past decade, we’ve seen a generational gap in hip-hop culture
missing from the Central Valley, and we want to change that. Both Revibe The Vibe & Modesto Artists Movement are dedicated to promoting the arts in a positive and public way. This Beat Battle at the historic State Theatre provides hip-hop in the 209 the visibility it has never had before. We’re excited to create future hubs for the next wave of cultural influencers—whether they be dancers, beatmakers, poets, graffiti artists, or just enthusiastic young minds in need of creative outlets.
The beatmakers competing in this year’s battle include: MayFlwr95, Ray V., TOON WRLD, Bennett Vickery, Dripwork, TESEBEATZ IOB, Putrid Beats, Clouded Kings, JMMYJMMY, K.O, Tpillz, Ddropsbeats, Science, Doomdawiz, Salacious Wizard Cult, Doni Blu

Thanks to Modesto Artists Movement, Revibe The Vibe, and our sponsors—Paradigm Construction, Collins Electric, Apparel Graphics, Mike and Midge, and of course, the State Theatre—we are keeping hip-hop culture thriving in Modesto, California. Let’s keep this momentum going!

Poetry Night
The Modesto Artists Movement brought another electrifying night of poetry to LoFi Labs in downtown Modesto this October with a “horror”-themed haiku battle and open mic event with bongo and piano beats. These poems dug deep, creating a sense of empathy and connection through shared fears, anxieties, and beautiful narratives.

This month’s open mic award went to Patricia Housh for her powerful and evocative poem, Those Words, which captivated the audience with its emotional depth and delivery. Meanwhile, the haiku battle saw Traci Bookman rise above the competition, even besting her prolific poet husband. It was a night to remember, where art, fear, and empathy collided in the most unexpected ways, leaving the audience both thrilled, inspired, and more connected then ever.

The Attitude of Gratitude
By Mary Layton
addition I had time to read world literature for many hours. You never know what looks like a bad thing at first, can turn out to be a blessing. The time to celebrate Thanksgiving is here once again. A time when we can remember to give thanks for all that the good things that already exist in our lives, the relationships we have to family and friends and neighbors, associates and colleagues, our communities, to cultivate and protect them. I feel grateful to see that I have choices, instead of choosing a negative and divisive path, I can choose to live with the idea of finding common ground with others and share what I have with them, participate and help where I can. Wish you all a very happy and peaceful Thanksgiving! For more info go to taichi4modesto.com or call (209)572-4518
from childhood, and so lucky for me, she offered to take care of me. It was easy to postpone my flight by a week. In order for her not to get infected I stayed in my room while she set down food several times a day at my door. What an unexpected time- out! When I wasn‘t sleeping I could watch the beautiful change of season outside the window, all the vibrant autumn colors of the leaves, and listen to the noises and songs of the squirrels and birds. With no place to run to I could give myself to being there in the moment. In
