Wishing you all the best in 2025 from our family. These last few years have been so special with grandkids in our lives and with the little ones around and we are making new memories. Becky and I love every minute and it is amazing how your priorities change and do all we can to help these kids grow up. But one thing that hasn’t changed is we need to make sure Modesto is a good place for kids and grandkids to grow up, get a great education, get involved, find their passion, and hopefully, just hopefully, there will be a thriving economy here for them to “want to live here” to start their own adult lives and families. With this in mind, January is always a time to start fresh. It’s up to this generation to make sure that the next generation will appreciate our community. 2024 was tough with so many moving pieces, and it seemed like every day was a 3-D chess game. Everyone needs a cleansing, and like the Chinese year of the Snake, you can shed your skin, come out fresh, adaptable and regain some idealism to really got out there and make a difference. Everyone can do this, but what deserves your attention? Think about it, there are so many things asked of us, but what are the things that leave you fulfilled about how you lend a hand. New Years is like a brand-new day, where you can chart the path you want to be on, and in Modesto, there are so many worthwhile things to connect with. For me, it is my family, my company, completing the Graffiti USA Museum and supporting our culture and music community. The arts have a big opportunity here in Modesto in 2025. Our friends started the
MODESTO VIEW MAGAZINE
Modesto Artists Movement (MAM) that is a new energetic source of support and inspiration. The Stanislaus Arts Council (SAC) has a new location, a focused mission and an executive director looking to improve the art community and we interview Dominique Johnson in this issue. Middagh Goodwin and I are focused on the Modesto Area Music Association (MAMA), where the mission is to promote “live music’ in the Modesto area. There are more, but what we need to do is to make sure that each of these areas could actually be a career. It’s not enough to have art galleries to look at art. We need to buy and commission art so that artists can focus on “being professional artists”. At the MAMA, our events like Music in the Plaza, Rockin’ Holiday, May the 4th are all about making sure that musicians get paid to play. Modesto Artist Movement wants to make sure that writing, beat boxing, poetry can be a career, and arts organizations succeed. To truly be an arts community, the people that make the art have to be celebrated and compensated to make a living. When this happens, we get more art, more venues, more vibrancy and Modesto will truly be, as Sam Pierstorff says, “the next great art city”. Why not us? The Modesto music scene can be every big as good as the Athens GA, scene. What do we need to do to make this mission a reality? Always looking for good and fresh new ideas. With this comes accountability. Are we getting things done? We do a lot of visioning and planning here in Modesto, but are things really getting done? We seem to be
having the same meetings over and over again. Are the organizations that are tasked with economic development, heath and homeless services, streamlining planning and building completing their goals? Do we even know what the measurable goals are? That my friends is what we need to focus on; who and what is delivering and what are the measurable goals. Visit Modesto, for example is an organization that has delivered results on a shoestring budget. The Almond Blossom Cruise was a program created to turn what has happened every spring for decades, into a commercialized tourism program attracting world-wide positive attention and visitors. It all comes back to our local focus. Are we supporting the local businesses that make Modesto happen? I am grateful to the advertisers in ModestoView that make it possible for us to deliver good news and info each month. If you would like to advertise so we can continue on our mission to “Serve Civic Pride Daily” please let me know and we will connect you. If local business is good, if new businesses are starting, then, and our infrastructure encourages national and global business attraction, our economy is good and we get closer to making the place that our kids will want to come back to. We can do this in 2025. Let’s stay engaged. Tune out the national noise, and let’s make the place we live in the best we can. There is something that each of us can do. Big or small, it all adds up. I am grateful to all that read ModestoView and get out and about and become part of our community. Thank you and Happy New Year, Chris Murphy Founder and Publisher, Chris Murphy chrism@modestoview.com

COMMUNITY VIEW
Citizen of the Year Modesto is fortunate to have an amazing network of volunteers and people that give of themselves to make our city better. Every year American GI Forum celebrates these accomplishments and hosts an annual “Citizen of the Year” award. Also celebrated is a Veteran of the Year and a Volunteer of the Year. On January 11, the GI Forum will present the 2024 Citizen Award to Lou Friedman. If you have ever volunteered or served on a non-profit, you will have worked with Lou. Lou came to Modesto as the CFO of the Gallo Winery over 50 years ago. He has since retired and is now a partner at Gianelli Law Firm. He is very involved assisting local non-profits to be well-run and he and his wife, Kenni, are avid volunteers for many local organizations. They give their time, effort, treasure and guidance freely and are a huge asset to the Modesto community. Garrard Marsh is being honored as the Veteran of the Year. Garrard is a long time Modestan and his family has been part of the fabric for decades. Garrard was the Mayor of Modesto from 2012 – 2016 and his family owns the McHenry Bowl, frequently donat-

ing space for local projects. He is a Navy Veteran, having served during and after the Vietnam War aboard nuclear submarines. He is a member of Modesto Rotary, and the American Legion and is a lifetime member of the VFW. He and his wife Dallas support many local organizations and volunteer regularly. Christina Kenny has been instrumental in the success of the Modesto CHAT teams. This is an innovative new program to really get at finding solutions to homelessness and the conditions that create it and interfacing between residents and local agencies. CHAT also connects with the Modesto Police Department and Christina is well respected by the City of Modesto and Modesto PD. She is really making a difference here in Modesto. The annual event is a dinner and awards ceremony on January 11 and the Veterans Hall at 3500 Coffee Rd. Table sponsorships for $300 and individual tickets at $32 are available. You can also sponsor and donate
a table to a needy group of Vets so they can celebrate these wonderful people. Event starts at 5:30 and ceremony is at 6 pm. As a former recipient of the Citizen of the Year in 2019, I urge you support this event and connect with our community and I am humbled and honored to be recognizing these deserving inductees. Golden Rules for the Future
By Chris Murphy
I am a member of Modesto Rotary, (tbh with marginal attendance) my daughter Madison is in Modesto Sunrise Rotary and Abigail and Harrison are in North Modesto Kiwanis Club. Modesto has great service groups that could use your skills, time and support. There are many more service clubs like Elks, Lions, Moose and Masons, but here are a few links to get started You don’t need to be a member of a Rotary Club to know the key foundation. This goes a bit further than the classic “Golden Rule” of “Do unto others as you want them to do unto you”. There are many versions, some as simple as “you get what you give”. Rotarians take it a little further and apply some community and business standards. The world would be a pretty good place if we operated with these guidelines. Clip and save these as it gives perspective to decision making.

ART VIEW
It is a New Year, and there are resolutions to make and keep, as well as new programs, classes, shows, and art creations. 2024-year recap of note: Modesto Artists Movement’s year-end stats from the December board meeting are pretty impressive. 47 events, 14,000 attendees, 71 community donors, 41 event sponsors, and 12 grants to artists. MAM has 12 ambassadors in film, hip-hop, comedy, poetry and fiction, music, and more. Live painting and film at concert events are visual art. December Third Thursday featured the He(Art) card class at The Queen Bean, hosted by Ryan Gallo, indicating more workshops, classes, and events in the coming year. The Queen Bean is rebuilding the performance deck and will resume as a performance, arts, and meeting place across the arts in the 209. Suzanne McCaslin’s 2nd Friday art meetup will be held at the Queen Bean this month. 2024 brought the challenge of new art grant projects in the community and less gallery space for displays, shows, and classes. Beginning revisions to the Art Walk livened up Third Thursdays with new venues participating and some new artists, but not the open-ended participation for out-of-organization artists to find a spot. The announcement of the end of the official season in October, going into the Holiday quarter, just as new energy was established. Art Walk is not just about selling art but also about a community gathering once a month of artists and art patrons, with a chance to show art, discuss it, and appreciate it. In 30 years, it has become a habit for many, not necessarily needing a map. I didn’t get the memo until after the October column deadline, so it’s no surprise that we had patrons at the Peer Gallery on the usual Art Walk dates in November and December. FOLLOW US:

A Resolution for Art
By Jim Christiansen
Life Drawing is still seeking studio space to resume the longstanding weekly meet-up. MJC has art classes for regularly enrolled students and has extended adult education programs. Emerald Tattoo hosted a successful art auction fundraiser for Stanislaus Animal Rescue non-profit. Tattoo communities are artist spots, and check into their expanding opportunities for artists outside the trade. Bookish another meeting spot for the arts and artists. Dragonfly Art for Life is a membership gallery that offers classes. PRAP Peer Gallery has a new schedule with addresses, art vendors on Third Thursdays and First Fridays, with a proposed lineup of classes and artist show opportunities. It has been a non-profit for 16 years, and it has been a collaborative art and music and special events hook-up. I was a featured artist in December, with 29 paintings, and Rosemarie Sturgill will be featured in January. The third Thursday is January 16, and there is a chance to purchase art gifts for Valentine’s Day, as the official restart is February 20. We hope all the Art Walk venues will be back online then. Stanislaus Artist Open Studio’s final deadline for Open Studio weekend, April 5 and 6 is January 15. Openstudio.stanislaus@gmail.com to apply. A new show at the Stanislaus Arts Council gallery is “Our Collective Spirit,” which runs from January 8 to the end of the month. The next innovative show in February is a collaboration with CSU Stanislaus BFA students and Stan Arts members, to be shown at CSUS art gallery and 1315 J Street. The show is to be “The Stanislaus Art Exchange.” www.stanarts.org Follow the View Crew on Threads @modestoview

BREW VIEW How to “Not” Drink Like a Pro.
By Devry Thayer Churchkey Bartender @churchkeymodesto
Happy New Year!
We made it through the entire year of 2024, which felt like the spirit of “I could use a drink” was teaching us lesson after lesson… but we made it. Now it is time for that age-old tradition of making New Year resolutions that we will certainly, undoubtedly, 100% keep throughout the year. From going to the gym, eating healthier, flossing more, not eating chips, and saving more money… the dearest to everyone’s heart is a classic, Dry January. Almost every restaurant, bar, club, grocery store, convenience store, gas station, or wherever you enjoy food or drinks will have some nonalcoholic beverage. So, cutting down on drinking doesn’t mean you have to lock yourself up and not go to your favorite social space. Here is a quick rundown on what to look for and how to order and not drink like a pro.
BEER
First, there are tons of NA options in the beer world now for the people who like to have a couple of cold ones with the boys or enjoy a hop-filled glass of liquid gold. If it’s not just Odouls in the green bottle or St.Pauli girl, there are a lot of well-done
8
craft brews stocked on many more shelves than before. Athletic Brewing is going to get my overall stamp of approval. They specialize in nonalc and make various styles, from golden to hoppy to extra dark. They make a mean variety pack that you can’t go wrong if you want the beer flavor but not the beer hangovers. Yeah, we have our standbys… Big shout out to Corona Cero for being easy to find and having the same crispness. Lagunitas offers the IPNA with their signature hoppy dankness but a clear head the next day. Heineken0.0 … mehh, I’d take the Stella Liberte by a slight edge. The point is there are options out there… Even Contentment makes Grenades & Atom bombs for their motivated guests. Chinn’s International always has a great selection of something delicious and hard to get ahold of, such as Erdinger N/A, Untitled Artist, and a variety from Brew Dog.
SPIRITS
Now, I will be honest with everyone… I am not the biggest fan of the idea of a non-alcoholic “spirit.” As a bartender and a drinker, I have developed a fondness and home for almost every spirit to fit in. I like the heat of a good bourbon and the salty sweetness of a good tequila; most of these are hard to recreate in a non-alcoholic way. Given that, I have tried quite a few and still wanted to let you know what I thought and give you a good chance to have your most accurate, zero-proof cocktail. Also, to be
MODESTO VIEW MAGAZINE
clear, I have tried many of these by themselves, and that isn’t necessarily how most people will be drinking these, but instead, in a cocktail they want to enjoy. Shout out to Spiritless Kentucky 74, my favorite zero-proof whiskey and Seedlip Spice 94 aromatic botanical gin alternative. Nonalcoholic spirits are a little funny because of how they have to be labeled and defined to appease “the man.” So, you can google a lot of nonalc brands, and not all of them will say “Zero Proof Whiskey” because… It’s not whiskey, and the rules say they must classify it correctly. I recommend checking out some easily found brands, trying a few different lines, and seeing if you fall in love with a nonalcoholic botanical spirit or an amaro or something you wouldn’t have expected to like. What’s wild is you can get ahold of these brands super easily, CleanCo, Seedlip, and Ritual Spirits can all be found and ordered through Amazon, or a quick trip to Bevmo. Go try them, make a couple zero proof martinis or whatever you are looking for, and let me know what you found to be your favorite.
MOCKTAILS
Now, this is my personal nonalcoholic love-hate relationship. As a bartender, I appreciate the challenge of being able to mix up something different for a special request. Still, even though it seems like it would be
easy, it is way more complicated to use a standard mix of ingredients and come up with a unique drink. A Shirley Temple will only satisfy so many people who are looking for a non-alcoholic option. Ginger beer? Getting warmer… maybe a ginger beer with some cranberry? Better. Ginger Beer, Cranberry juice, add a splash of OJ and top that bad boy with some seltzer water… hot dang, not bad at all. See, I put this in a separate category from making a cocktail with a zero-proof spirit in it; a mocktail is its own thing. I am not making a virgin margarita; I will make a mocktail with lime, mango nectar, and a bit of agave with a little spicy tajin. It is an intention; it is knowing that it won’t be the same as a margarita and having the person be just as happy with what’s in their glass. I would have difficulty speaking for every bar in the area, but when I get asked to make a mocktail, I get to look at the assortment of different mixers in my well and [hopefully] make a juicy, spicy, tart or sweet drink. And that’s the best part: every bar in town is a little different; every bar in town will have various mixers, which means you can get a different mocktail at each place. Freshly squeezed juices, a twist on how to sweeten it, a splash of something that fizzes, and you are in a good place. When I make a mocktail, I like a tart and light tropical mix. Passionfruit and mango juice, lime juice, some orgeat (almond syrup), shaken up and topped with some club soda or Sprite, depending on how sweet I want it…. Sheesh… it’s that great feeling of ordering a dignified drink… and then smiling, knowing that I am sipping on an adult Capri Sun. I am super happy that you have decided to give this Dry January a solid go and that there is a lot of support and opportunities for you to discover an entirely new world of beverages. The beverage scene will keep changing, and I am always excited to see what people are interested in and what they are drinking next. Cheers.

The fire to create isn’t something the mind is always ready for. Don’t be afraid to put something on paper without fear of the outcome.
Even the mundane daily routine, and try to make meaning. Take note of your feelings as often as possible, and create something with that feeling. The art you make doesn’t have to be meaningful or profound. The power is in the feeling you put into it; the more raw and authentic, the better. I can’t wait to bring more passionate artists to my platform here at ModView. I hope this is the year that nobody holds back. There is nothing to lose, only more great art for the world to gain.

W Healthy-ish Eats E I V OOD By Chris Murphy and the ViewCrew
It’s a new year, there are millions of new resolutions, new gym member-
ships, and of course there is a new commitment to health and fitness. But what’s out there that is healthy that isn’t just a salad? There has to be a tasty way to cleaner eats without suffering. We are not dissing the faithful salad, but there are some healthy and fulfilling options that are tasty and interesting. Are they pure, single ingredient? No. In the spirit of a fresh new start, we are calling this special section, “Healthy-ish” options as we all attempt to make a better decision when possible. Let’s take a local tour.
Rivets All American Grill
Surla’s
The menu at Rivets has something for everyone. Big bites and little bites and many of them are pretty hearty. But there are a couple items that fall into our healthy-ish category and our fave One of the most healthy things you can eat is salmon. Chef is the So-Cal Burger, bun-less style. What says healthy more than avocados, fresh onions and John Surla is a master at Salmon, prepped many ways. He cretomatoes with a dash of chipotle. I like the beef, but there is also a chicken breast option that ated an extra special dish that also features and even healthier takes it up the health scale. This burger with a side salad is a full meal deal. If you are going for way to eat with pearl cous cous. This is a tasty way to add a bit an adult drink, rum and diet soda is a zero carb addition. If you are looking for a fish option, try of starch, high in nutrition that is really enhanced with Chamthe blackened Mahi Mahi. Hondo reports that you will be able to find some keto and carnivore pagne lemon vinaigrette, feta cheese, grape tomatoes, some options in January. Don’t forget to check out the local bands that play on the weekends. arugula with a balsamic reduction. Pair this up with a chardonRivets American Grill 2307 Oakdale Rd. Modesto 209-846-0501 nay and you are set. Surla’s 431 12th St. Modesto 209-550-5555 Lunch M, Wed-Fri, Dinner Wed-Sat Full Sunday brunch last Sunday each month. www.surlasrestaurant.com The words “giant” and “burger” are rarely used Surla’s when referring to New Year resolution diets or healthy foods, but the ViewCrew thinks Bob’s Giant Burgers has a great healthyish option for those looking for little wins this year. At Bob’s you can get any burger protein-style lettuce wrapped to save on carbs and bulk up on protein. We can’t recommend the lettuce-wrapped California Giant Burger enough – with avocado, bacon, pickles, onions, and the best burger sauce around, enjoy this healthyish food without (or with – we won’t tell!) their legendary crinkle fries. Fuzio Bistro
One of the ViewCrew’s fave spots in downtown Is Fuzio. They are homebase to many of our downtown events. One of their lunch items keeps us healthy and powered up. The tuna melt panini is wonderful. Generous tuna salad, cheddar cheese and then pressed in a thin flatbread panini. This is one of those delicious things that keeps you powered up. We order it with a side Caesar and the occasional chardonnay. This is available for lunch, and in the evening, they have a new portobello marsala or a red quinoa pilaf with fresh spinach and feta. Fuzio Bistro, 1020 10th St, Modesto, 209-5579711 Open at 11 weekdays, 12 weekends

ChurchKey
Churchkey’s Cauliflower Bites are a plant-based take on a gameday classic wings, but they are so good you will want to eat them all year round. They are crispy on the outside and tender in the center, with your choice of sauces. Pictured is the Yum Yum, which is a little sweet, spicy, sour, salty, and sour with basil. You can get the more traditional Garlic Buffalo, Spicy BBQ, or Honey Sriracha, or try the Coconut Curry for something different. Try them once, and you will be back again for more. Looking for a healthy option that is good for you even when it’s not St. Patrick’s Day? There are some cool vegan “options” here in town too. Corned beef and cabbage is a key staple that will keep you powered up with protein and some veggies. We normally sub out the potatoes for extra veggies. It’s simple, traditional and loaded with fiber. Obviously, corned beef has sodium, but overall, it can be a healthy staple. If you are looking for something really clean, try the P. Wexford’s lettuce wrap tacos. Choice of protein, pico de gallo, Greek yogurt and avocado. P. Wex. has something for everyone in your group, and of course a Guinness, since 1795, is “good for you”. P Wexford’s Pub 3313 McHenry Ave. Modesto 209-576-7939 Open 11am daily.
Pappachino, Skewers, Pappapoloni, D’Forno, Papapavlos You can’t go wrong with any of these options. I always find that I can eat a solid meal, and not be too full. The jasmine rice, the kebabs, the roasted tomatoes, the hummus and pita, chicken, steak and veggies. Really, what’s not to like? These are some of Modesto’s best options, for dine in, to go and to take to a potluck or picnic. A shout out to the Lula Kebab from Skewers, pictured here. No wonder the Mediterranean diet is the Go To! Papachino’s, 1212 J Street, Modesto 209-578-2225 Papapavlo’s Bistro, 1320 Standiford Ave #2, Modesto 209-525-3995 Skewers Kebab House, 821 L St. Modesto, 209-525-3611 D’Forno Cocina, 918 13th St, Modesto, 209-859-9094 Pappapoloni Mediterranean, 2501 McHenry Ave, Modesto 209-544-1784
This is just a quick sampling to showcase some alternate menu items. Needless to say, some of these are more healthy than other, but it’s a step in the right direction when you are being more fit and healthy for 2025. Of course, there are amazing salads in town that always fit the bill. There are some cool vegan optiosn here in town too. Stanislaus Arts Council
By Chris Murphy
A thriving arts community is often the hallmark of a truly great city, transforming a good place into a vibrant, dynamic hub of culture and creativity. The belief that “creative cities win” rings true now more than ever, and Modesto is poised to shine brighter with the revitalized efforts of the Stanislaus Arts Council. Since the opening of 10th Street Place, the Mistlin Gallery on the ground floor became a cultural cornerstone for our community, hosting countless exhibitions, events and fostering artistic expression. However, with significant rent increases and the loss of sponsorship following Mr. Mistlin’s passing, the gallery faced challenges that necessitated a new direction. Amid these changes, opportunity knocked. The Stanislaus Arts Council seized the moment to reimagine its future, relocating to a new home at 1315 J Street. Sharing the neighborhood with the iconic State Theatre, the gallery now occupies a space brimming with potential. While change can be complex, it also brings fresh beginnings, and with a new executive director at the helm, the stage is set for a renaissance. Dominique Johnson, an artist and degrees from both Modesto Junior College and CSU Stanislaus, a seasoned event planner, fashion stylist and multifaceted creative, was brought on board to lead this new chapter., Dominique has been an active member of the local arts scene in our community. Her passion, vision, and energy are matched by the unwavering support of her husband Joe and their children, who have played a key role in the gallery’s transition.

Dominque Johnson
With the doors now open, the work of rebuilding and reimagining this vital cultural institution begins. Under Dominique’s leadership, the Stanislaus Arts Council aims to unite the community, foster creativity, and elevate Modesto’s art scene to new heights. Let’s get to know Dominique Johnson. ModestoView: When did you first realize you wanted to be an artist? Dominque Johnson: I’ve always known I wanted to be an artist. My first “stage” was the fireplace at home, where I would perform for anyone willing to watch. Not long after, my parents put me in dance classes to channel that energy. I have been creating visual art since I was a toddler, over the years it became a lifelong passion and practice. Throughout junior high, high school, and in college, I immersed myself in as many art classes as possible—drawing, woodworking, ceramics, color, and design—my creativity never felt limited. Every step of my journey has reinforced that being an artist isn’t just something I have wanted to do; it is who I am. MV: Who were your key influences? DJ: My influences are as multifaceted as my own creative endeavors. Fashion designer Gilbert Adrian’s work from the 1930s inspires my appreciation for bold, elegant forms. Maija Isola’s prints speak to my love for graphic patterns and storytelling through design. Contemporary influences include Daniel Roseberry’s innovative cou-

ture creations at Schiaparelli, and his sister Liz Roseberry Fox, whose jewelry design resonates with my love of color and texture. Artist Meg Lionel Murphy’s vibrant, emotive works spark my imagination. And of course, Taylor Swift’s music has profoundly influenced my life, my art, my creativity, and my perspective on resilience. Her storytelling, poetic lyricism and reinvention are endlessly inspiring for me. MV: Describe the current condition of Modesto’s art community. DJ: Modesto’s art community is experiencing a truly inspiring renaissance. There’s a tangible energy and excitement as local artists and organizations come together to collaborate and innovate in ways that uplift and connect us all. While we’re building stronger bonds within the community, we’re also laying the groundwork to fully support and showcase the incredible talent that calls Modesto home. From grassroots initiatives to long-standing institutions, there’s a growing recognition of the arts as an essential element of our city’s cultural and economic vitality. As the State Local Partner of the California Arts Council, we are honored and excited to be at the forefront of initiatives like the creation of a local Arts District and preparing for meaningful advocacy at both state and local levels. The conclusion of 2024 marked a significant milestone for the Stanislaus Arts Council: the completion of a transformative
two-year grant through the Creative Corps, Heartland Grant Program. This program infused over $1.6 million into our community, allowing us to subgrant funds to 16 impactful projects across Stanislaus County. This achievement underscores what sets the Stanislaus Arts Council apart—our ability to provide opportunities by directly funding artists and creative projects. MV: What has excited you the most in this recent transition to 1315 J? DJ: The opportunity for the Stanislaus Arts Council to find its identity in the community by bringing our vision to life in a dedicated space. Knowing that our resources are being used to expand our reach into the community and not primarily to pay rent, has been the most exciting part of this transition. It’s thrilling to see artists and community members walk through our doors and engage with the arts. Having a central location in downtown Modesto allows us to create meaningful connections, showcasing local talent, while also being able to get out into the community to establish the Stanislaus Arts Council as a cultural cornerstone for our community is a constant driver for us. MV: What do you think the biggest misconception is about local art? DJ: A common misconception is that local art is less sophisticated or impactful than art in major metropolitan areas. In reality, our local artists and arts organizations are

the mindset from appreciation and active support to art being a part of everyday life, the fabric of our local culture, as well as recognizing the arts as an economic driver within our community.
creating incredible, thought-provoking work that deserves recognition on a larger scale. We are a community of professionals and visionaries, and the art coming out of Modesto is as compelling as any found in bigger cities. MV: If you had a much larger budget, what would you implement? DJ: With a larger budget, our vision for supporting and elevating the arts community in Modesto and Stanislaus County would expand exponentially. We would prioritize sub-granting to local arts organizations, fostering equitability across the community, especially as we acknowledge the significant funding cuts that have impacted so many. Establishing larger and more diverse grant opportunities for local artists, alongside artist residencies, would be a cornerstone of our efforts to empower creative expression and innovation. Additionally, we’d expand our reach by providing robust educational programming for youth, laying the groundwork for the next generation of artists and cultural advocates. A Youth Arts Council would offer young creatives a platform to lead and contribute to shaping the future of the arts in our region. To ensure the arts thrive in everyday life, we’d launch a comprehensive marketing campaign to elevate the visibility of local artists and organizations. Partnering with schools and businesses, we’d work to integrate art into everyday spaces, creating a more vibrant and inspiring community. A rotating public art initiative would add dynamic, evolving visual interest throughout Modesto and Stanislaus County, solidifying our place as the premier arts destination in the Valley. MV: What changes in the art community have you experienced that make you FOLLOW US:

optimistic? DJ: I’ve seen a shift towards collaboration and a greater emphasis on supporting one another. There’s a growing recognition that art is essential, art is healing, and being an artist is far more than a hobby. The arts are far more than the visual beautification of our community. The arts have the ability to foster dialogue, inspire creativity, and drive economic development. The increasing involvement of younger generations in the arts also gives me hope for a vibrant future. I believe that creative communities thrive in multiple ways. Seeing the evolution and growth of the arts in the community I grew up in fuels my optimistic view on where we are going as a community that embraces the Arts. MV: Have you received any key pieces of advice to make this successful? DJ: The best advice I’ve received is to stay true to our mission and build relationships. Success in the arts is not just about the work itself but about creating trust, engagement, and building community. It’s also essential to be adaptable and open to new ideas while staying grounded in what makes the Stanislaus Arts Council unique as the state’s local partner to the California Arts Council. MV: How do we get our community to become more art consumers than merely art appreciators? DJ: Education is key—helping people understand the value of purchasing local art, attending local performances, and participating in community arts programming not only supports artists but enriches their own lives. We also need to continue to make the arts accessible and approachable. Hosting events, building creative spaces and places; while also integrating more art into public spaces can all help shift Follow the View Crew on Threads @modestoview
MV: What can our local government do to ensure that Modesto is an art community? DJ: Our local government can play a pivotal role in solidifying Stanislaus County as a thriving art community by actively investing in public art programs and cultural initiatives. While we deeply appreciate the county’s recognition and designation of our parent organization (Central California Art League, Inc.) as the State Local Partner of the California Arts Council in 2022, fostering a deeper relationship and expanding their support will be critical to realizing the full potential of the arts in our region. It’s essential for local leaders to champion the arts as an economic driver—showcasing how a vibrant arts scene not only enriches lives but also attracts tourism, stimulates local business, and draws new residents who value cultural vitality. By collaborating with artists, arts organizations, and community leaders to create a forward-thinking cultural plan, Modesto can position itself as a beacon for creativity and innovation. MV:Describe your perfect Modesto day. DJ: My perfect Modesto day would start with brunch and mimosas with my friends, followed by a visit to the Farmer’s Market for fresh produce. We’d spend the afternoon exploring downtown, strolling by all of the amazing murals, and stopping in to shop at Intrinsic Elements, and Zyanya’s Boutique. I’d stop by Dragonfly Art for Life- Art Studio to meet artists, and discover new works and maybe learn a new technique or art style. In the evening, I’d attend a performance at the Gallo Center for Art with my family, followed by some yummy dinner and a delicious Old Fashioned at Churchkey. After dinner we would either find some live music downtown to enjoy or catch a movie at Brenden Theaters. MV: Beatles or Stones? DJ: This might be the toughest question! If I must choose, I’d say the Beatles— as a Taylor Swift Fan aka Swiftie, I find the Beatles have inspired her work, which in turn has inspired my work. The Beatles were groundbreaking in their artistry and innovation, constantly evolving and pushing creative boundaries, which resonates deeply with me as an artist and person. Also on the team is Clint Shaw, just returning to Modesto. Expect great smoked ribs, clam chowder and even 8-hole putting greens. This will be quite the place. We had a wonderful Rockin’ Holiday Wonderland this season and we thank all that came to visit and enjoy. It is such a privilege to be able to bring some winter magic to Modesto for people to enjoy for the last 10 years. It was a great Rockin’ Snow season, our Rockin’ Music line up was wonderful. The Rockin’ Tree did light shows every night, and Rockin’ Santa heard the Christmas wishes from thousands of kids, each receiving a large candy cane, and people were able to stroll under a glittery and snowy 10th Street. Many holiday and Christmas memories were made and photos taken. All if this was available for free, thank you to our team and our amazing sponsors. First, my Sierra Pacific Warehouse Group team did a fantastic job of bring Rockin’ Holiday to life and supporting this event. Thanks Nick, Johnny, Johnny Jr and JD Harbin. Our friends at Collins Electric brought our wonderland lights and Rockin’ Tree to life for all to enjoy and were a key sponsor. Thanks Matt, Kevin and Brian. Rockin’ Holiday would not be possible without the Brenden Theatre team for allowing our home base of operations and their beautiful neon marquee. Thanks Saul. Thank you to T-Cups Café for providing the space for Rockin’ North Pole. We thank the City of Modesto and the JPA of 10th St Place for allowing us to transform this space each holiday season. Huge shout out to Saul Trujillo & the Brenden Theater team.
So many events have been saved and supported by this theater team. When bad weather comes, for Rockin’ Holiday, May the 4th, Spirit of Giving Run, Car Shows, street fairs, and so many others, the Brenden lobby comes through. This is one of Downtown Modesto treasures and we are truly grateful for team Brenden for all you do to support our community and downtown events. Plus, there are hundreds of thousands, (yes that many) people a year that go to the Brenden Modesto, so that’s a great positive economic impact for Modesto. Brenden lights up downtown with the most amazing neon front that is a beacon for Modesto and should be an inspiration for the rest of 10th Street. We go to the New Year’s and beyond, full of hope and enthusiasm. I have plenty of resolutions but ah the follow-through I am sorry to say a bit remiss. I plan to do more of what I like to do and less of what I don’t. I plan to do more music, get involved in animal rescue, and take time to enjoy my friends and family. I will try to also try for more quality and less quantity in my life and not fill up all the spaces and leave some blank areas to see what happens. Wish me luck! Blue Monday Party Jam continues with the house band and special guests on the fourth Monday of the Month. We thank Chris Murphy and Gary Nelson for helping sponsor this event! The band features John
Burt Sax, Cortez Flores on drums, Kevin Marin on bass, myself, Eric Benson on keyboards, and special guest Gene Radino, a jazz guitarist. The alumni include John Adey Bass, Conrad Johnson Bass, Dave Hawks on Drums, and Andrew Rosenblum Sax. The band plays R&B, Funk, and Motown for listening and dancing with a tremendous 6-piece Band. We all need to work on supporting the venues that support the arts and create new venues, as many great bands need to get out and be heard. Together, we can make it happen and see things strive! There are some great shows at Gallo Center, but also check out some great venues out of town: The Newman Theatre, Vinhose Tapas Bar in Merced, Yoshi’s Oakland best jazz shows, Khumba Music Center Santa Cruz, and Piedmont Piano Company, the Back Door, and the Sound Room located in Oakland.

2025 starts off fresh and fast. Scratch the word boredom from your vocabulary as 2025 is going to be a great year for our arts community. Our community is what we make it, and the Gallo Center is at full speed, the Gallo Rep has found their place with Ryan Foy directing, and expect great things at the Prospect Theatre with their artists lab and this spring, our local arts organizations are collaborating and there should be some good school presentations. January starts fast so let’s go. Gallo Center has everything, from Shen Yun to Charo and even the Police Academy! Shen Yun is a traditional look at Chinese culture, before the communist revolution. Can you say Cuchi Cuchi? If you were a fan of Johnny Carson, Charo was a mainstay. Underneath the show and dance glitz, Charo is a great flamenco guitarist and this show is a tour de force. Get Your Words On
By Paula Treick DeBoard, Bookish
If you strolled past Bookish on a Monday night in November, you may have noticed a dozen or so writers hunched over their keyboards, clattering away. This was for Novelish, a month-long novel-writing challenge sponsored by Bookish and led by local writer Shannan Sinclair. While there is a well-established national challenge that takes place each November, Shannan explained that Novelish was a “more personalized, supportive challenge tailored to our local writing community.” After signing up, writers set a monthly word count goal for themselves and were encouraged along the way by Shannan’s daily writing prompts, an active Discord chat, weekly Zooms and in-person Monday night writing sessions. As Shannan explains, Novelish wasn’t really about how many words a person can write
in a month, but more about fostering connection and encouraging writers to support their goals. Shannan, the author of two sci-fi novels (which coincidentally are available at Bookish), spent November writing more than 30,000 words of her next book and developed a consistent morning-writing habit. Another writer, Hilary McNeill, a biology teacher at Central Valley High School, has a longtime love of reading and “lots of stories I’d love to tell,” which drew her to sign up for Novelish. While she met her word goal, Hilary also appreciated the communal writing experience, saying, “The vibe was wonderful – listening to others typing as I did helped spur me on.” The truth is that writing can be a lonely experience, and everything in the world pulls at our time and energy to keep us from it. Writing challenges can hold us accountable to our own work and to each other. Follow Bookish social media (@bookish_modesto) or check out our website (www.bookishmodesto.com/events) for more upcoming writing events and to join our community of writer

Happy New Year of the Wood Snake!
What will the New Year have in store for us? The Year of the Snake will start on January 29th 2025 and end February 16, 2026. Chinese New Year is a very important family tradition which brings everyone together to share special foods. Celebrations may go on for 2 weeks. The Snake comes after the Dragon in the Chinese Zodiac. While the energy of the dragon is flashy and energetic, the snake is mysterious and shrewd. The snake brings sophistication and elegance. The element associated with this year’s snake is wood which supports growth and transformation. “An excellent time to start new projects, explore new opportunities or make significant changes in your life”. As with everything in life there’s the flip side; the snake has positive as well as negative aspects. On the positive side the snake represents wisdom, knowledge, intuition and creativity. Some cultures associate the snake with good luck and longevity. The fact that snakes shed their skin and renew

themselves is often taken as a symbol for the idea of letting go of old habits and fixed ideas. To transform ourselves takes deep reflection, planning and searching for answers. On the negative side the snakes are feared for their venomous bite. In some folk stories snakes are shown to cause harm and seduce humans. So better to tread lightly, be more cautious this year! Overall, it is supposed to be a year in which “we may feel pulled in several directions.” Patience and adaptability are the best approach. The exercise that I teach and practice is based on a legend about a Taoist monk who was watching the fight between a snake and a bird.
