GREETINGS VIEW

December and the holiday spirit is rushing in fast this year along with the rain and snow and flurries of glitter, music and fun.  We need a happy holiday season and Thanksgiving waited until the very last minute in November and we only have 3 weekends before Christmas.  Now that we know the timeline, let’s make sure that we help you get the most out of this giving season and plan ahead so you don’t miss out.

There isn’t much better than a family holiday dinner or football Sundays with little grandkids running around, mobile, talkative and growing up so fast. Becky and I want to get the most out of these times and build great family memories and time goes by quickly and seems to be getting faster.  In the immortal words of Ferris Bueller, “Life moves pretty fast. If you don’t stop and look around once in a while, you may miss it”.   In a more stern warning from Muse’s Matt Bellamy, “Don’t waste your time, or time will waste you”.  However you want to look at it, we nearing the end of 2024 and how are we going to turn the page?  What do we need to do to package this year up and make sure that

Thanks Bill Harris for  this great photo and for always capturing the best of our community and being at so many events.

our family, our friends and our community get our attention as this is where we all make the most difference.  There is a lot of weirdness and uncertainty in the world, and I know that I am going to focus on what I can do to make my nearby world as good as I can for my family, friends and business.

Every day this month is stacked with things to do. I know I say this every month, you really need to sit down with your calendar as there are only three weekends until New Year’s weekend.  Modesto

just shines the weekend of the Celebration of Lights Parade and the Rockin’ Holiday Tree lighting as thousands of people enjoy our downtown festivities, the Rockin’ Holidays nights, Modesto on Ice, and the shows at the Gallo, the 90-year old State, Prospect, MJC and more.  In this issue, we have a variety of ways you can give that will help many and suit your abilities.  Take time to try something new, get out of your regular routine and give the gift of time and attention.  You never know what you may find.

As we get close to year end, I hope that are able to share some of your giving with the Graffiti USA Museum and help us build something that will make Modesto proud for decades to come, and deliver a good tax deduction. Great things are happening there and I encourage you to visit and check it out, and donate. Modesto should be on the map for things like our classic car history, or performing arts offering, our musical talent and amazing places to eat, drink and be a community.  It all comes back to living local.  Coming off of Thanksgiving, Shop Small and DoMo Shop, we need to make sure that we go to our local businesses FIRST.  You know when you spend your holiday money locally, it stays here.  These local businesses put our community first and that is really what ModestoView is all about.  We are proud of where we live and doing what we can to make it better.  The businesses that advertise here in these pages, make it possible to design, print, deliver, mail and promote civic pride daily.

We are very excited to present and sponsor Rockin’ Holiday for the 10th year.  We love making magic in our community and thanks to all of our sponsors that help make it happen.   We are proud to sponsor Modesto On Ice and the amazing Ill List Poetry Slam Championships as this help bring our community together to have fun, create memories and open dialog.    Thank you to all that believe in our mission and I wish you a Happy Holidays, Merry Christmas, Happy Hannukah, Festivus or simply the joy of a good day and offer my respect to all people.

With friendship and gratitude,

chrism@modestoview.com

Happy Holidays to all from our family.      Above right - 2 – Jamie, Ryan and Chris are ready for the cool winter fun in Modesto.

Adorned with sheer curtains, it is in many ways like entering your grandmother’s pantry.  That may sound funny to some, but let’s face it, Grandma’s the name, spoiling’s the game.  The walls are covered with tea pots, teacups, some small displays AND, Judy’s Teas.  That’s right, in her pursuit to make this amazing she became certified in tea.  So, the delicious tea you drink, you can buy and take home and its house made!!   We would suggest that this would be a perfect afternoon with friends, kids, parents and grandparents.  The comfy, homey space is great for delicious food and conversation.  Certainly a great spot for moms and daughters as well as dads and sons.

This is sure to be a very busy time of year.  Walk ins are welcome for space available, reservations are highly recommended for December.

Rockin’ Holiday Is Here!

Back in 2012, we created a Rockin’ Christmas event at Hero’s, with local Rockabilly bands and a newly created Rockin’ North Pole.  I even brought my first snow machine. It was a Rockin’ good night and we knew it had to be bigger. In 2014, with  my friends from Collins Electric and the Sierra Pacific crew, we teamed up with the City of Modesto to transform our 10th Street Plaza into the Rockin’ North Pole, with a classic Graffiti USA twist.  Since 2014, thousands of kids have met Rockin’ Santa, played in Rockin’ Snow and enjoyed  Rockin’ Tree shows and live music.  It is still free for all to enjoy and it is an honor for the ModestoView crew to do this for the people of Modesto USA and a special thanks to our friends at Brenden Theatres for being our Rockin’ Holiday home base.

A few of you got a sneak peak of Rockin’ Santa at the DoMo Shop days in our new Rockin’ North Pole.   Don’t miss opening night on December 7 right after the Disco-themed Celebration of Lights Parade. HISTORY VIEW

State Theatre Celebrates 90 Years

When the State Theater opened its doors on Christmas Day in 1934, it was the newest “talking picture house” among several older movie theaters in Downtown Modesto. From live theaters like “The Auditorium” built in 1912 but converted to show film in 1922, to the grandest of cinema theaters like “The Strand Theater” built in 1921, venues accommodating the performing arts and film were an anchor of downtown entertainment. The State Theater was by no means the largest of theaters nor the most opulent in town, but its style and character brought optimism and positivity to downtown amid the Great Depression. Over the decades as other theaters closed, fell into disrepair, or were lost to fire, “The State” endured changing clientele and shifting styles to remain a downtown destination, becoming the last remaining historic movie theater in Modesto.

George M. Mann and Morgan A. Walsh of Redwood Theaters, Inc. announced plans to build the State Theater in July 1934 for a cost of $100,000 at the corner of 13th and J Streets, blocks away from other movie theaters along 10th Street, but the location was considered central for movie goers. The area surrounding the theater was still a mix of residential and commercial, with three houses being sold and relocated in order to clear the lots for construction. Mann and Walsh at the time, based out of San Francisco, also managed the Princess (Later Covell), Modesto, and Lyric Theaters. They tapped the Los Angeles-based architect S. Charles Lee to design the new theater, who was revered as one of the most prolific designers of movie houses in the country.

While S. Charles Lee’s theaters were primarily built in Southern California, he designed a number of theaters for towns in the Central Valley and Bay Area. Lee opted for an Art Moderne style for The State, which incorporated a minimally-detailed facade with emphasis on horizontal lines and an open air lobby with a box office booth. Tile work adorned the exterior underneath the marquee, and two business fronts were included on either side of the theater entrance. The interior of the theater provided stadium-style and loge seating for 800 people, indirect lighting was utilized so no fixtures would be seen, and the walls were decorated in gazelle murals. Construction was overseen by Modesto contractor Harry Brown, who managed to complete the project within five months. The auditorium seats, the sound system, and the neon-lighted marquee were all installed just within three

weeks of the grand opening.

On December 20, 1934, following a Chamber of Commerce luncheon at the Hotel Modesto, the theater was formally dedicated at a public ceremony, where Acting Mayor Roy Pack spoke on behalf of the City and former mayor Sol P. Elias traced the history of theaters in Modesto. Five days later, after much advertisement and fanfare, the State Theater held its grand opening on the morning of Christmas Day 1934, with screenings of “Flirtation Walk” and “La Cucaracha” throughout the day. General admission on opening day was 35 cents, loge seats were 40 cents, and children were just 10 cents - matinees would go on to be 25 cents. To drum up enthusiasm for the new theater, marketing efforts in early 1935 included “Cash Tuesday” giveaways, where $50-$500 was awarded to lucky winners.

The State Theater over the years operated under numerous general managers, including Jack Ulrich and the longtime lady of the house, Rose Saso. The 1950’s and 1960’s saw the State undergo renovations and remodels to adapt for modern cinematic technologies, and to expand lobby amenities and design furnishings. The State Theater did eventually sell, but was reopened in 1979 as Cine Mexico by Leo Valdivia until closing in 1992. Sitting empty with its future uncertain, the Downtown Arts Project purchased the theater in 1994 and oversaw renovations

of the space to better accommodate live performances, since the original screen stage was only five feet deep. This led to a renewed community focus on the State Theater, and the Modesto City Council designated the State Theater as City Landmark #22 in 1995. In 2005, The State Theatre of Modesto Inc., a non-profit created to further support the State’s renovations and commitment to the

community, purchased the theater and facilitated a $2.5 million project to revitalize the historic theatre. The non-profit board continues to volunteer time and work with theatre staff to ensure the longevity and preservation of the movie and arts house. The story of The State Theatre is one of community character, historic preservation, and cinematic perseverance. A silver screen survivor in downtown, The State serves as a point of immense civic pride for Modesto. It is a preserved gem from a bygone era, reinvigorated for future enjoyment and entertainment by patrons, volunteers, and benefactors who support The State in the name of bettering and enhancing the community. This Christmas, as the State Theatre achieves its 90th Anniversary milestone, let us celebrate the historic venue and movie house that helps make Modesto merry and bright.

LOCAL LEGEND VIEW

Local Legend, Dean Ira Jagger

“The General” from White Christmas

Dean Jeffries Jagger was born on November 7th 1903 in Columbus Grove, Ohio and in the 1920s, Jagger visited Los Angeles to pursue a career in acting in silent films. Silent films quickly went away to make room for the new “talkies”, but he eventually signed a contract with Paramount which gave him a big break with lots of films such as You Belong to Me (1934) with Lee Tracy, Home on the Range (1935), and Wings in the Dark (1935) with Cary Grant. He made his breakthrough role as Brigham Young in Brigham Young (1940) and later won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for his role as Major/Lt. Col. Harvey Stovall in Twelve O’Clock High (1949) with Gregory Peck. In 1954, he became known as one of the most beloved holiday characters in history portraying the beloved General Tom Waverly alongside Bing Crosby, Danny Kaye, and Rosemary Clooney. In the 1960s, Jagger starred in the show Mr. Novak and continued to act in television shows throughout

the decades. Jagger’s third wife, Etta Mae Norton, was a longtime dancer and dance instructor in Modesto and though he passed away in 1991 in Santa Monica, both he and Etta are buried here at Lakewood Memorial Park in Hughson. If you are a fan of White Christmas, like the ViewCrew, celebrate Dean Ira Jagger by catching a showing of the holiday classic at the State Theatre, picking up a cup of coffee or cocoa downtown, and making the trip out to Lakewood to say “hello” and pay your respects to General Tom Waverly. “We’ll follow the old man wherever he wants to go…with the grandest son of a soldier of them all”

Emerging: Erica Killjoy & False Widow

In songwriting, vulnerability is the life force of creativity—a window into the rawest, most authentic corners of the human experience. Beyond the music, however, lies the emotional toll of baring one’s soul for art.

For some artists, turning pain into song can be cathartic; it’s a double-edged sword for others. Local songwriter Erica Killjoy has endured this journey of creative discovery and has found her way of weaving struggle and strength into the music of her new band, False Widow.

False Widow’s new EP, Hurting, was written and co-produced by Erica, putting her hardship, healing, and resilience shamelessly on the line for us to relate to and celebrate. Where else can we turn for comfort in our darkness without the bravery of those who show us the beauty in the bleak?

“I hope that, through my music, people can feel their emotions and be themselves without shame. Most importantly, I hope that people allow themselves to get the help they need. If I can make even one person feel less alone, I did my job on this earth,” she shares.

This time of year, our world makes con-

siderable attempts to promote joy and togetherness while many experience seasonal effects, grief, and loneliness. It’s almost refreshing to hear from an artist who crafts their work “in solidarity with the hopeless.” Erica reminds us, “It’s okay not to be okay. It’s okay to ask for help.”

I asked Erica for some tricks she uses to capture the light of inspiration while in the thick of her experience. “I keep an H3 recorder on standby in my room. I have a recorder on my phone as well. I tend to record things rather than write them down. I don’t write anything down until I’m trying to structure a song,” she explains. This idea may sound simple, but it’s arguably the most profound part of the process: letting the feeling happen first. Many creatives instinctively try to “output” what they feel into lyrics or chord progressions. Erica Killjoy immerses herself in the emotion, allowing the art to create itself amidst the free flow of raw expression. “I try to tell myself never to be afraid to change the plan. I just let things come out as they’re supposed to. The road will always wind, but the destination will be the same,” she says.

The Hurting EP is an alternative rock prelude to the many musical endeavors in store for Erica Killjoy and her band, False Widow. Be on the lookout for live shows. And for anyone struggling this season, know you’re not alone—help is here. Visit warmline.org if you need support.

Biscuit Basket

Nothing says winter warmth like hot biscuits for breakfast and we have found some amazing biscuits.

Biscuits are the dessert of a breakfast and whether you are doing a scramble, omelet, or traditional brekkie. Biscuits are what you are really craving. Modesto has a new place that is dedicated to the amazing biscuit and it’s coming from some of Modesto’s best food guys ever. Dan Costa has teamed up with his long-time partner Fernando Gomez and Allen Diamond, son of Chef Stan Diamond.  Rounding out the crew is Dan’s brother Mike Nelson. They have teamed up to bring a new breakfast and lunch to Modesto.  You know these guys, Mallards, Mike’s Road House, Toscana, Sundial, Velvet Creamery, Kevin’s Foods and so much more, not to mention a couple of other really successful businesses.  But for Dan Costa, being in the kitchen and teaching the ways to make a business successful is what he loves to do.

Allen Diamond has been in the kitchen since he was 5 years old, on a milk crate learning to flip pancakes.  When his dad Stan had Toscana in Turlock, at 9 years old he knew his way around a restaurant kitchen. Dan has been instrumental in this culinary journey and Allen and Fernando, who joined the Mallards team in 1994, are taking the lead in the new Biscuit Basket on Bangs Road in N. Modesto.

The restaurant is comfortable, modern and feels homey yet open. At 7 am, there are already a couple of regulars. The crew are all in red and white checkerboard and will make sure you have coffee as soon as you get seated. My fave is the counter by the kitchen, close to the

action.   Biscuit Basket is a breakfast and lunch place, open 6am –3pm daily.  I asked Fernando, what is the “WOW” item on the menu and he was quick to respond, “our biscuits”.  He then recommended the Billionaire bacon and the Chicken Fried Steak.  Allen added the Cowboy Benedict and we were off and running.

I was all in on the warm biscuits, with fresh butter and a strawberry freezer jam, that’s a recipe from Allen’s mom, Lynette.  Tender, flaky and buttery.  I asked what the secret is and Allen explained, layer, butter, layer etc.  Wow. I could have eaten the whole basket of four.

Right off, the Chicken Fried Steak was a home run.  Two steaks with a saltine crusting, sunnyside up eggs, and potatoes. Wow.

The Cowboy Benedict was tasty with a creamy hollandaise, nicely poached eggs and shredded tri tip on fresh biscuit.  You can get English muffin too.  The Classic breakfast was a perfect start, with the Billionaire bacon added was amazing.  French toast fans will be pleased with the Big Sky, with chokeberry syrup and you can build your own omelets.  I am a shredded hash brown guy, but these were shaved/slices of potatoes, crispy and delicious. This is a good and hearty way to start the day and my coffee cup was never empty.  Of course, there are lighter items like avocado toast and oatmeal with fruit, and a mimosa if you please.

Mallards fans can rejoice with the Hunters Turkey and the Shrimp Melt and the Mallards Clam Chowder and the Mallards Smoked Chicken Salad. You can even get a Turkey cranberry sandwich all year long.  For the ultimate lunch burger, the Billionaire bacon

burger is essential.  Don’t worry, there are great salads like their famous shrimp Louie. There is also a kid and senior’s menu with a bit of everything.

This has all the makings of the return of the Sundial and I am sure the breakfast loving people of our community will become regulars.  For being open a week, it felt like the team has been at it for years. Well, in fact they have, and we are luckier for it.  Stop by and check out the Biscuit Basket.  I’ll see you at the counter.

INTER VIEW

The holiday season is all about magic, making magic.  It is our job as parents, colleagues and civic leaders to make things special, create a sense of wonder and also to make sure that the kids in our lives see that there is something special out there and we foster the sense of wonder.   Over ten years ago, I had an idea to decorate downtown Modesto for the Christmas holiday as the city had discontinued the annual tree lighting.   Incensed, I commiserated with my friend Brian Gini, whom I had just met through the Modesto Arch restoration project.  His team at Collins Electrical brought the Modesto Christmas tree at the Center Plaza back to life.  We then planned and teamed up for an elaborate Rockin’ Holiday in 10th St Plaza, with snow, lighting and digital tree that still shines each winter. The best part of all of this was the desire to create some magic in our community and do something that is free for kids and families. Why? For the magic of it.  From the restored arch, the market lights for ModShop to the beautiful illumination and renovation of the State Theatre and countless community events, these are just a few things that have been lit up by Brian and Collins so we can smile and be proud of our community.

Brian is Co-CEO of Collins Electrical, an award-winning family-owned 100-year old company. Brian has done every part of this business and has helped guide it into a successful national firm.  He and his wife Laura went to San Diego State are very involved in the community. His daughters are Cal Berkely and Santa Clara alumni and he is a new proud grandparent, but every day, he finds ways to do something special to make our community better, foster positive dialog, and encourage others and other companies to do the same.  This year, Modesto’s historic State Theatre turns 90 years old and it is brighter than ever thanks to Brian’s leadership, so in that spirit, let’s meet Brian Gini. ModestoView: Did you always plan on joining the family business?

Brian Gini:  No, early on I never thought of, or expected to join a family business. When I was growing up in Stockton through middle school, high school and college, during holiday and summer breaks, my brothers and I were provided an (expected) opportunity to work sweeping floors, to digging ditches for our electricians which familiarized us with hard work, and gaining respect from our field electricians. After those days, I chased my then-girlfriend, and now wife of 33 years to San Diego for School and Fun, and then working for a general contractor

Brian Gini Collins Electrical

there.   Never did I expect to move back to the central valley to work Collins Electrical.

MV: What motivates you on a daily basis?

BG: My past elders, my wife and 3 daughters that I want to continually educate and inspire, and knowing I have a unique ability and opportunity to help create a fun and a lively atmosphere for us all to enjoy.  And, knowing that there is a great network locally who are of the same mindset to make Modesto a better place.

Although, what I have learned from my early years that if you want something done (in many cases) you’ve got to get it done yourself. Later in life, when I began to have more confidence, and meeting like-minded people, I realized you can get more done together.

When I am working for Collins Electrical, it is rigorous mental business, you are responsible for a lot of people and a lot of families.  I began to get involved in community projects, as a way to add balance to that.  I soon found I loved helping and making a difference to our Downtown.  I love the thought of being able to bring fun and enjoyment to others, especially families.  Being able to balance that type of work and being involved in positive community events helps me create balance in my life.

MV: How do you see opportunities to improve our community?

BG: The central valley of California gets a bad rap from outsiders.  I recently sat down with a handful of men and we discussed the pluses and minuses of Modesto, there were more positives/pluses discussed than minuses.  And if we realize what we have here at home geographically, demographically and professionally, we have such

diversity and I don’t believe outsiders realize the opportunities presented.  I recall my wife Laura being a Girl Scout leader and bringing (20) girls to camp in Yosemite valley.  Today I know that there are many other non-profit groups that are doing the same things for young people, and I believe to improve the communities starts with educating the young people to develop pride in their community through the Elders providing such educational opportunities as well.  Privately funded groups can facilitate in accelerating such learning opportunities for our youth.

MV: I feel it’s our “job” to find ways to make our community better for the people that are coming behind us, how does that work for you?

BG: I absolutely agree that we need to continually integrate the next generation into our current “community better” objectives.  By introducing the next generation to lead programs, non-profit boards, and business, leads to allows simple pivots of ideas that may be more relevant and has not been thought through by the previous generations.  This subtle transition gives opportunity, experience and confidence and input by those that want to. By encouraging their involvement and the sharing of their ideas, I believe pride and ownership of projects that benefit Modesto are instilled.  Modesto has a lot of big hearted people that are doing just that, getting involved.  I love that. Over time our downtown has become a happening and magical place, especially during the holiday season!

MV: When I say you “light up” our community, that is literal; how do you think a company with the skills of Collins can make a difference?

BG: Myself and our company has been blessed in this regard.  We have the opportunity to quite literally and metaphorically provide brightness in dark areas in life. I feel absolutely blessed to have the ability to contribute to the illumination of our town.  Collins has some of the most skilled and talented electricians around and those who have lent a hand in these downtown projects also have creative ideas and motivation to make things work, thus making that magic for Modesto.

MV: As a dedicated community volunteer, what do you see are the obstacles?

BG: Maintaining status quo.  We all have an opportunity to do better, and many people do.  But when you are trying to do something good for the community and you continue to be met with resistance, or people of decision-making authority leave their post, and you have to start that approval process all over again, it can be frustrating. And after a while you become status-quo.

MV: What are some of the projects that you are the most proud of?

BG: There are so many.

From entertainment venues like the Prospect Theater, the State Theater, the Jewell and Intermission, and the grand-daddy of them all, Gallo Center for the Arts, to the Brenden Theater Lighting on 10th Street, to the colored lighting for Mo-Band at Mancini Bowl, these all stand foremost in my mind. The Modesto Arch, where our electrician apprentices were involved in re-wiring, re-lamping, our historical arch.  The Red Lion-Double Tree hotel, which is the tallest building in Modesto.  The Brenden Theaters project, that was fast-tracked and provided initial beautiful “neon” illumination for downtown, which helped me to understand the nostalgia of neon in downtown.  When a decision had to be made toward electric tube lighting vs. neon upgrade lighting at the State Theater (and with a nudge from Randy Siefkin toward neon), the nostalgic feel of neon was the right call.

And finally, knowing that Collins Electrical and our electricians were instrumental in many of the Medical Centers in Modesto over the years, from Kaiser Hospital to Doctors Medical Center and Memorial Medical Center.  A much as we are “not saving lives” but we are providing facilities that “are saving lives”.

MV: Leading a company is leading a team, how do you think our local company leaders can make a difference?

BG: Many company leaders in Modesto DO make a difference and ARE involved in making a difference.  I just wish that MORE business leaders asked how they could do more.

I believe that when done right, creating a safe entertainment space, creates a reputation of cultural enrichment which attracts outside businesses and professional individuals such as talented doctors and deep think-

ers to be attracted to Modesto. I spent time with a friend on the State Theater Board and many times, she said, “we are not saving lives here”.  And now that I serve on the Doctors Medical Center board, I realize that we can be saving lives as many doctors want to raise their young families in a safe community that has culture and entertainment.

MV: If you had unlimited budget and permission, what project would you do for our community?

BG: The timing of this question is very pertinent.  For the past (3) years a handful of professional downtowners have been trying to gain approval toward an artistic lighting installation on 10th & J Street.  It could be called Covell Corners to reflect our past history and nostalgia.  Some of the inspiration comes from the downtown history and some comes from lighting installations observed elsewhere. Specifically answering the question, I would want to mimic or use concepts of Regent Street in London during the Holiday season. Look it up!

MV:  Tell us how you feel about the Collins Electrical team.

BG: Grateful.  I have had the opportunity to work with 3 generations of dedicated people in my role with Collins Electrical.  What I consider the Icons of the Industry when I was a teenager, many of which worked for the Company for 35+ years.  My current generation who is phasing out and nearing retirement who continually “give back” to our community, specifically Matt Paine, who is behind the scenes making our Magic of Light work on the 10th Street Christmas Lane, Mod Shop, Porchfest, RGB lighting for MoBand at Mancini Bowl, and many more, and the younger ones currently moving up.  We have so many other people that “give back” to their communities and I so proud that have a leadership role in driving business and supporting our communities that we leave within.

MV. Describe your perfect Modesto day.

BG: My perfect day in Modesto is walking with my wife and dog downtown this time of year.  The leaves are changing colors, the temperature is cool, the air is clean, and we are looking for a place to eat lunch and we have(10) food options within 6 blocks of each other.  And each of the independent restaurant owners have smiles on their faces and represent their restaurants with pride and  care.

MV: Beatles or Stones?

BG: Sorry Chris, neither.  I grew up an “old-school funk” music person in Stockton.  Grand Master Flash & the Furious Five, Lakeside, Dazz and Gap Bands….you know, the ones they are still playing today! Merry Christmas to you and your Families! Collins Electric is based in Stockton, with a Modesto campus and operations across the state of California.  www.collinselectric.com

Making Magic for the Holidays!

Twinkle lights, sugar plums, snow flurries in 10th St Plaza, Christmas movies at the 90 year-old State Theatre, ice skating at Modesto on Ice, ringing the Salvation Army bell to help raise money for others in need, the magic of an evening get together and the camaraderie of kids, friends and family, these are magic moments.

We can’t ever lose that sense of wonder

The world around us is crazy enough so we really need to focus on what makes magic moments right here. Is it an extra string of lights on your porch? Making some holiday snacks out of Bugles and M&Ms? The smell of cinnamon orange in the kitchen? It doesn’t have to be much, but some fun thing that makes a magic memory or start a tradition.  Maybe it is taking your kids to the “snow” in 10th St Plaza.

MoCheer!

Our friends at Visit Modesto have really made some great magic waves all over the world for Modesto, taking the cool things that happen here and telling our friends in Japan, London, or France and bringing people to visit. They are always working on fun ways to make some Modesto Cheer.  Check out their ideas and tips at www. visitmodesto.com

Light Up the Night With Holiday Cheer

I hope everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving. If you went shopping for gifts on Friday or Saturday, I hope you shopped locally and shopped small. It is more important than ever to support our locally owned businesses, including restaurants, bars, and cafes(especially those supporting local music).

It wouldn’t be December in Modesto without Rockin’ Holidays in the 10th Street Plaza. Come out and enjoy the twinkling lights, Santa, the Elves, the Snow and Pixel Light Tree, and Music Thurs-Sat from December 7th until the 21st. The Tree Lighting is on Saturday the 7th after the Disco-themed Celebration of Lights Parade. The tree will be lit, and the party will keep going, with Selecta Dave Bracer spinning the disco hits. On the 12th, don’t miss Imaginary Friends, which has jazzy renditions of popular songs and holiday favorites. On the 12th, we will have a Cajun Christmas with the BluesBox Bayou Band.

Enjoy the sounds of New Orleans, along with some Holiday classics. It is back to the Eighties with Neon Radio on the 14th. All the hits of my teenage years mixed in with some holiday tunes(maybe even Holiday by Madonna.) Santa’s Little Horn Band is a group of music instructors playing Christmas and Holiday tunes. Melynda Rodriguez will be playing Holiday classics starting at 6 pm. On the 20th and at 7 pm, David Dow and Friends will play a mix of blues, rock, jazz, and more for your enjoyment. Feliz Navidad, we have a crowd favorite wherever they perform; the David Perez Band will close out the season on the 21st with a mix of Latin and holiday hits. For more things to do in and near Modesto, check out the NYE Events list and, of course, our packed calendar in the back of the magazine.

Please support our local bands. This holiday season, pick up some CDs, T-shirts, stickers, buttons, or patches and give them away as gifts. Share the gift of music and support your favorite bands simultaneously. Happy Holidays, and I look forward to a brighter New Year.

BOOKISH

It can be hard to find fun things to do or places to spend time without checking your wallet in anxiety. Luckily, Bookish at 811 W Roseburg Ave here in Modesto has plenty of calm, casual, and consistently free events for the public to come and enjoy. This local bookshop has a vibrant and welcoming environment inside that you will surely find comfort in. They have an appealing plethora of books and a new coffee cart serving espresso drinks.

Bookish has a monthly chess club every 3rd Wednesday that I enjoy and bring my brothers and friends with me. All ages and all levels of experience are welcomed with an encouraging smile to their chess club, and if you ever get lost on the board, there will most likely be someone there willing to guide you. As someone who is passionate about chess, it’s great that there is an accessible club to engage in, and make friends with similar interests, nurturing a passion in chess. If you have ever been curious about chess I encourage you to give it a go and to not be intimidated by it. The pieces are easy to learn and the rules are simple. It can be a wonderful hobby to pick up or a new thing to try if you haven’t already or haven’t tried in a long time.

Bookish also has other events such as craft and painting nights, poetry readings, and open mics which I have attended on multiple occasions. Experience the shining  beauty of live poetry and even get out there yourself if you have something to share, or stay back to watch others, both young and old who have evocative stories to tell and raw emotions to show us. It is always good to open your heart to the voices around us, as everyone deserves a chance at being seen/ heard and you never know when your eyes will unexpectedly well with tears and your breathing will stall with newfound profound emotion. There are some truly tremendous artists out there that you can find simply sitting right beside you. For a cozy fall evening, visit Bookish for a hot chocolate, a few hours of chess or poetry, browse for a new book, and go home with plenty of inspiration! Follow your local independent bookshop on Instagram @bookish_modesto for event times and schedules. You never know when your life will be changed by something as simple as walking into a bookstore on a whim, so please, get out there and thank you for reading.

Winter is here, the holiday season, parties with friends and family! Life in winter makes us looking for warmth and light. Some of us sun lovers may not be so thrilled with colder temperatures and grey skies.

We can get the winter blues!  Here are some of my remedies.

From the moment I wake up,  I plan to put my mind in a positive and joyful mode, as if I was choosing a nice radio station.  I will make sure to do something fun at some point during the day day or evening.  If possible I will include  someone else. We are social animals and need each other’s company.  I may take a stroll through downtown and do some shopping there.  Grab lunch or dinner, go see a movie, or a show at the Gallo. Once in a while I treat myself to a massage.  I practice my piano.  find some way to express myself creatively with water colors.  I recently joined a drum circle at the

State Theatre and loved it!  It was amazing how happy and young everybody looked.  How else can we cultivate happiness in our lives? Martha Stewart says that  she found lasting happiness being a gardener. She made sure that she was learning something new every day.  It may require a commitment but can bring you joy for a lifetime. You are investing in happiness and possibly a long life.  It’s the season of giving. We share what we have with others. We shop for just the perfect gift for our loved ones. It’s always a great, uplifting feeling to give to the needy and less fortunate.  Pass onto others what we are not using. Giving makes the giver and the receiver happy. That includes our smiles and good cheers,  our courage and resilience,  sharing our hopes and dreams.

I wish you all a very Merry Christmas and a Happy  and Healthy New Year! For more info go to taichi4modesto.com or call (209) 572-4518
