Greetings friends,

of something bigger. Our friends Jake and Katie Barber spearheaded the Children’s Museum and some of us our working on a Graffiti USA Museum. These are all ways we can Love Modesto in our own way. This is why ModestoView is here, so we can all share our experiences, as friends, as business people and colleagues who want to make our lives better, not just for us, but for our kids and beyond. Thank you all that read and share ModestoView monthly. I am grateful to all of you that advertise in these pages so we can design, print and deliver this monthly. We are here to “Serve Civic Pride Daily” and are glad you enjoy that. See you out and about and lets all roll up our sleeves together. With gratitude, Chris Murphy Founder and Publisher, ModestoView chrism@modestoview.com

It’s April, so let’s get real friends. Literally, let’s get real. Really real. What do I mean by get real? This is about taking living in the here and now and making our own community better. The things that we can actually put our fingers on, the knobs that we can twist, the events we can create, and the dirt we can dig, are the things that are real. There is so much talk about Meta and virtual worlds. We aren’t talking about playing the Sims in the early 2000s, we are talking about people inventing an alternate world, one where will people put goggles on and share crypto-coins, sell virtual NFT images, and walk through virtual shopping malls. Facebook even changed their name to Meta to invest billions on a fake world. VR goggles, alternate world, matrix, metaverse? Seriously, who has the extra time to invent a fake world, when there is so much in the real world right around us? I’m not some guy that is clinging to my 1956 typewriter and vinyl records and I love technology. Pokemon Go at least got people out walking in the real world with a virtual

overlay. This it is really about looking around us and finding at the things we can do, right here, in our own local world, that actually make our daily lives better. Yes, actually love Modesto, and Ceres, Oakdale and all of the communities around us. Truly, this is what makes Modesto special. People can like living or being here or not, but I have noticed, what makes our community special is how people get involved, lend a hand, roll up their sleeved and do their part. The Gallo Center and McHenry Mansion would not be what they are without volunteers. Our local non-profits depend on all of us to take care of others, and our local government works because people serve on committees and commissions so the people are involved with our future. These are our friends, our local business and the people that want to do their part to make it better. I spent some time with the owners of the new Casa Maestros that we are featuring this month, and besides opening their dream eatery, they wanted to be on 10th St to make it better, to make our downtown more social and be a part

W E I V L I TRA Lace up those hiking shoes

By Darin Jesberg Lace up those hiking shoes and pump up those knobby tires- there’s a lot of great things going on this April in our community. Get outside to enjoy our open spaces like Dry Creek and the Tuolumne River Regional Parks. Haven’t been out there yet? We invite you to get out and enjoy these two gems right here in our own backyard! In case you didn’t know, we have a thriving interscholastic mountain bike race team based right here in Modesto, The Modesto Composite Mountain Bike Race Team “The Dust Devils”. You’ll see them out riding on Wednesdays at Dry Creek and on Saturdays along the Tuolumne Riverside Trail, working on skills and endurance for the upcoming race season. Modesto is going to be one of four race venues for the NORCAL Interscholastic Mountain Bike League’s teams to compete on April 9th and 10th. The race will be held in Gateway Park then utilize the world class trails along the Tuolumne River to make a fast, spectator friendly five-mile course for kids from the bay area to the foothills to compete against each other. Community volunteers and spectators are encouraged to get involved. Speaking of trails, Modesto will be the host city for the California Trails and Greenways Conference April 2729. Trail and land managers from all over the state will descend on Modesto to participate in professional seminars and workshops, spend time in our downtown eateries and trek along our trails and greenways. Modesto has been known for a lot of things, but not for being an outdoor recreation destination; however, more and more people are traveling from as far away as Sonora and San Francisco to enjoy our outdoor recreation amenities- yes, it is really happening! We hope you take some time to get out, explore, and enjoy our fantastic trails, waterways, and outdoor spaces soonsee you out on the trail! POET VIEW By Chris Murphy

April is National Poetry Month. We are very fortunate to have so much local poetry talent in our area. We have multiple current and ex poet laureates, we have poetry slams with a National Slam championship, we have a Ninja Poet that moonlights as an action hero while by day a mild-mannered English professor. The spoken and written word is one of society’s treasures, inspiring action, thought and education. We need more if this in our life so we can get beyond the simple obstacles like “there, their, they’re and thur”. We hope you enjoy our monthly poetry installments from local poets and hope you will attend some reading and maybe even write some yourself as poetry gets back “in person” this month. Please enjoy and take part. The Carnegie in Turlock is hosting Portuguese Faith and Culture poetry with poet Lara Gularte and Sara Coito on April 2 @ 2 pm. MoSt Poetry Book Club will be feature a discussion of Amanda Moore’s Requeening on April 18 @ 6:30 pm at the Modesto Library.

STANISLAUS ARTIST OPEN STUDIO By Salvatore Salerno, Poet Laureate of Modesto

Since “art nourishes the roots of our culture” (John Kennedy’s line, sadly not one of mine) Why not visit the spaces where they grow, And the arborist artists whose water is beauty? These urban groves of art began a decade ago, When Alice Richards sowed the first seeds— Mix local artists, their works with their homes, And plant a unique Modesto spring weekend. All the fruits of their labors so wildly diverse, Who of their visitors would not be amazed? Who wouldn’t be pleased with something? Let me count the ways that creation can flow— For those who love paint, as surely why not, There are watercolor scenes of land and sea, Acrylic, oil and pastel, still lifes and portraits, What-have-you abstracts, collages, clever inks, And for 3-d fans of things to touch & hold, There are ceramic pots to show or to fill, All things denim, geometric sculptures of metal, Handspun alpaca scarves, equine art, Crafted jewelry of turquoise and pearl Of pendants, bracelets and earrings, Photography, whimsy for walls, paper cranes— All from the imaginations of your neighbors. Then there is the added pleasure of visiting Artists in the homes where they live and work— They’re the ones with the name tags and smiles— So, pick up a map and follow down its clues, Make a weekend of walking these groves of art, Drop some green and take home some treasure!

BREW VIEW

Pageo Lavender Farm Lavender Margaritas By Christopher & Brandilyn Mitchell

In 2015, #BrewView attended the first annual VinoFest, and it was held at the magical Pageo Lavender Farm. It was such a quaint and small event-only 15 wine makers or so-and as you walked around to sample wines you got to chat with the winemakers intimately. We met so many cool people that day, and wanted an excuse to go back. Vinofest has been a part of Central Valley Brewfest the last few years, but Pageo still hosts many wonderful events in its absence. You can host nearly any event there you like on the grounds-and weddings are the most popular. How did they get us back for a visit? Their scrumptious brunch cocktails called to us! Owned and operated by George & Patty Kapor, Pageo has a romantic back-story. The Kapors bought the property in 1998, with an inkling that they wanted to have a herb farm. They had visited an herb farm-restaurant combo in Connecticut called Capriland, and wondered if a small farm in Connecticut could support a year-long venture like that, one in California-with gorgeous weather 11 months of the year-certainly could thrive, too! Patty’s dad visited to check out the property and surprised the family by stating he used to live there in high school! Patty’s dad met her mom on the same property, when he went to rescue one of her family’s cows that got out of the yard. So how cute is it that people both fall in love on this farm *and* seal their love with a marriage on this farm, too!? They got started on their project and in 2007 hosted their first wedding on the farm. Their son Josh graduated from college and became the events manager, and one of their daughter-in-laws, Tina, makes most of the lovely items in the gift shop like the soap, sprays and teas. While weddings might be what they’re known for, their first passion is lavender. It’s everywhere! Imbued in every crevice possible, gracing us with it’s scent and beauty. Along with lavender, they grow other herbs and produce which they use to create their culinary delights.

The menu changes seasonally with what is fresh! Yum! They are open Wednesday-Saturday for brunch on the patio, and require brunch reservations. The patio is lovely year round with their heaters. When we called to RSVP, we requested a grilled cheese sandwich with broccoli salad as the side, a mixed berry spinach salad with homemade strawberry vinaigrette and a soup of the day. It was ready for us Saturday morning and we ordered a Spicy Lady and a Lavender Margarita on our first round with our food. I was skeptical about the Spicy Lady with the jalapeno, but it was the perfect balance paired with blood orange and was our favorite of the four drinks we tried. Look out Bloody Mary, the Spicy Lady has you beat! The Lavender Margarita was very bright and crisp. On our second round, we ordered the Cosmopolitan and The Molly Jane. Both were refreshing and easy-drinkin’. The garnishes for each drink were spectacularly beautiful, and I kept all the lavender sprigs, heehee. We wandered around the gorgeous grounds and enjoyed the spring air of the valley, on a wonderful date that was long overdue (thanks, covid). We had our 2 year old daughter with us, and she had a blast as well, looking at all the plants and flowers and pretty lights asking us repeatedly “What’s that?” because she had never been anywhere this cool before. Are you always trying to find unique gifts or want to make a unique cocktail? Buy a bundle of lavender and a bottle of lavender sugar that Tina makes on-site for a thoughtful present (or so you can make some delicious libations at home). Be sure to RSVP for their Mother’s Day Brunch on May 8th! Brunch will be from 11am-3pm, and will include non-alcoholic drinks for $48pp. (Cocktails are extra, and the children’s menu will be available for a cheaper price.) Looking for a mother’s day or engagement photo shoot? You can rent their lavender field for $35/hour for photos. Follow them on either Facebook or Instagram for more info on their seasonal vendor markets, U-pick days, and other fun events. Sip on, friends!

MAMA VIEW

I put on my first gig in over 2 years on March 23rd a sold-out Rockabilly show with Koffin Kats and The Pendletons at Ralston’s Goat. It felt good to see several people I have not seen in 2 or more years and to hear some fantastic music all at the same time. Through the course of the pandemic, I have done what I could to engage with musicians through hosting live streams on ModestoView to playing their songs on KCBP 95.5 FM. Both I think were crucial to keeping them going and the rest of us entertained, but there is nothing like the interaction between a musician and their audience. I am excited to have Music in the Plaza return later this month on April 22nd, Earth Day to the 10th Street Plaza, outdoors and with room for a great crowd to enjoy some good music. Starting things off is A Gathering of the Vibes playing a blend of rock standards, blues and 70s AOR. The Vibes is the closest we have to a supergroup in Modesto. On April 29th Western Bound will be taking the stage playing Country and Rock this female-fronted band is sure to get you dancing/. May 6th celebrate Cinco de Mayo in the Plaza with the David Perez Band on First Friday in Downtown Modesto. Music is 7-9 pm and always Free. For a full schedule go to facebook. com/10thstreetmusic

When was the last time you had dinner at P Wexfords? Did you know there was live music every Friday and Saturday? Some highlights for April Tongue & Grove on the 8th, Matt Davis Duo on the 16th, Doppelgänger on the 23rd and Alternative Hangover on the 30th. A local favorite French Cassettes will be making a tour stop supporting their latest album Rolodex at the Partisan in Merced on April 30th so might I suggest you take the short drive to see this great indie rock band. We have no use for domestic abuse.

This is something that we all must stand up against and prevent sexual abuse of any kind. We must support those that protect our most vulnerable in our community. The Haven Women’s Center does work that is literally life saving in the most dangerous times. Women need a safe place to get away and feel safe. This is why Sierra Pacific and ModestoView are Walking a Mile in their shoes to raise money for Haven. We hope that you will dig down deep and support our team. We will be walking Saturday morning, April 23. Please make a quick contribution so we can make a difference. FO

W E I V OD By Chris Murphy

This is a moment we have all been waiting for. Civilization has finally reached the end of 10th Street. Night after night, we have walked out of the Gallo Center after a show and wondered what we should do. 10th Street has been less than inviting in the evening, and now it is all different. The paper has come off the window, the roll-up windows are open and there is a beautiful light coming out, drawing you in in to a project that has been in the making for many years. The drinks are ready, the kitchen is open and best of all, ready to welcome you. I love 10th Street and it feels like it’s getting ready to shine. Years ago, in Atwater, when they were teenagers, Luis Soto, Daniel Perez and Rudy Ybarra all worked at a restaurant as busboys and dishwashers and were all friends and still are to this day. Throughout the years, they have all worked in many places, seen what works, what doesn’t and have had dreams about how to make it all work. The path has been winding and they have a lot of different experiences. Luis Soto brought the dream together. He has been in the HVAC business for many years, building restaurants. He has had many ideas, all the while, making notes about what he wanted when he could build a restaurant. A couple of years ago, he began to build Casa Maestros. With some starts and stops and two years of pandemic, he has worked hard to bring this to life. He invested more than he thought he would, but at the end of the day and after a lot of hard work, and the pandemic, he has what he dreamed about. Best of all, his friends of many years are right there with him.

At the recent opening, they celebrated with tequila, fantastic food, a mariachi band on a great corner. Now they are really ready to go strong. The onyx back lit bar is beautiful, and it shines through the cocktails served. The tequila variety is amazing and the top-shelf Don Julio and the Clase Azul are served with respect in a properly chilled glass. Daniel is very proud of the rare Don Julio, made from one of the last remaining batch while he was alive. They have bottles from barrel #1. Ask the price before ordering. I have not had a shot of tequila in many years, and had my first with the guidance of my bartender Ben Robles and co-owner Daniel Perez. Clase Azul, poured from a beautiful ceramic bottle with bell in the cap, is amazing, with a hint of vanilla with an orange. Wow. This is just the start as they have a full bar with many drink specials, flights of margaritas and will have tequila flights in the future. Once you have your drink, the bar is a great space and

there are cool patio seats right there on the corner of 10th and I. Bill Vega is the chef and his work is amazing. When I invited MJ Mangano to take pictures for this, his first question was, “they have food?”. Oh yes friends, this is so much more than a tequila bar. From the special tacos Jose, carne asada with cheese, to the shrimp and steak fajitas, house made beans (no cans), the amazing super burritos to the baskets of chips and salsa served in a paper cone, there is truly something for everyone. For ceviche fans, the shrimp are all hand cut, the limes hand squeezed and the taste is fresh. As a side, you can even get grilled whole jalapenos. The tortillas are hand made at Bonanza right down on H Street, and the mole sauce is Daniel’s great grandmothers recipe. Yes, 4th generation 100 year old recipes are found here. You can find this amazing sauce on the Mole Wings. Everyone will be talking about these. But what blew our minds is the molcajete

bowl. Wow. Molcajete is an amazing dish no matter where you go, but this is over the top. Deep fried cheese, grilled shrimp, steak, chicken and nopales draped over the edge of the bowl, with more steak, spices, sauce and cheese in the hot lava bowl. You need a friend to help you eat this. It is truly and amazing menu, fresh, interesting, authentic and served in a really friendly place. You can tell that friends run Casa Maestros. Is shows in the teamwork from Daniel who is everywhere, to Ben in bar, to Jose in the restaurant to Bill in the kitchen and Rudy as the manager and the rest of the team. Luis is very appreciative of the teamwork and patience he got from building owner Mitch Gagos as he built this through the pandemic. You can tell this is a dream that they all shared that Luis brought to life and got the band back together. 10th Street has a new start, and from I Street all the way down through 10th St Plaza, there is a new hustle and energy. Casa Maestros capping the end of the block is the social space where everyone can meet up, from lunch till closing. Luis explained, “I wanted to make it an old school place with traditions, that had the new school look and feel”. Well in my opinion, mission accomplished.

INT

W E I V ER

We are at a very strange point in time. There are big tech companies creating alternate worlds and the world is very divided, but where we are all one is how we can make our own community better. We are better when we work together, we are educated, we learn about each other and celebrate our diversity and create something better. This is one of the foundations of Love Modesto. Bryan Justin Marks is a lifelong resident of the Central Valley and has spend most of his professional life working in higher education. Bryan believed In order to change the world or help the world evolve we must continue to change and evolve ourselves. Bryan often says “we must go inward before we go outward”. The quest for knowledge and the desire to be a lifelong leader are the cornerstones of who Bryan is. Bryan is a product of local education from attending Beyer, Elliott and Johansen High Schools to his time at Modesto Junior College and CSU Stanislaus. Bryan also holds advanced degrees and trainings from Brandman University and the University of Southern California. At the heart of who Bryan is as a person is his passion for equity and diversity work as well as community engagement. “Bryan believes there is a place for us all in this world”. Bryan is now in the third season of his career serving as the Executive Director of Love Stanislaus County the organization that oversees Stanislaus County volunteers days in multiple cities such as Modesto, Patterson and Waterford just to name a few. Bryan calls Modesto home and is married to the love of his life Sandy and has a son Kyler who will graduate from MJC this year and transfer to CSU Long Beach. Let’s meet Bryan. ModestoView: You have always been in the education world, what motivated you to choose this path? Bryan Justin Marks: Actually, the first of my three professional seasons was politics. I hold a Bachelor’s in Political Science with a concentration in Constitutional Law. However, the longest part of my career to date

has been education. I love the valley and I had a very nontraditional path to obtaining my educational goal. I was success because of all the people who mentored me, guided my and believed in me. I felt for education was my calling for a season way to give back. I love working with young minds. MV: We have so many great local education opportunities, how can they be better connected to our communities and our social programs? BJM: Many of those who seek out educational opportunities in the valley come from a background where the understanding of the educational system is not common, especially in higher education. Getting connected starts with getting comfortable asking questions. So many college students are first generation students who are blazing their own path. They need to get to know their teachers (not just the “cool ones”, make sure you are seeing an academic advisor and get involved on your campus. Students are almost 90% more likely to meet their educational goals if they are involved in just one extra-curricular activity. MV: Love Modesto began in 2009 and is now much bigger. How many communities are you now serving? BJM: We serve 9 communities (Ceres, Escalon, Empire, Keyes, Modesto, Oakdale, Patterson, Riverbank, Turlock and Waterford) in Stanislaus County. We hope to be adding a few more in 2023. The vision of our founder Jeff Pishney has taken us from a small grassroots effort to over 100 cities across United Stated wiring with our sister nonprofit Love Our Cites to immolate the worked started in Modesto. We should ALL be really proud of that.

time. We have hundreds of inspirational churches, nonprofits and schools all whom need help and none of whom can do everything themselves. When we all pick up a piece the load is lighter.

MV: Love Stanislaus County also includes Love our Schools and the local teachers, how can we better support our local educators all year long? BJM: LSC actually includes Love Our Neighbors and Love Our Kids in addition to Love Our Neighbors as programs of LSC. Love Our Neighbors helps connect volunteers to volunteer opportunities and comes alongside organizations to do work with neighborhoods, veterans, senior citizens mental health issues and homelessness, Love Our Kids right now works directly with foster youth and foster families but is also getting involved in youth empowerment and youth leadership, Love Our Schools is about loving on kids and helping remove barriers around them through connecting business, churches and community who live close in proximity to a school. MV: People like to get their hands dirty and do something, that seems to be the main attraction to Love Modesto. How has this event become so popular? BJM: I don’t know if they always love getting their hands dirty..lol. but I do know that more people than not love our city and are willing to do anything to help. We see year round the best of what Modesto has to offer. Members of our community constantly rise to the occasion to love on their city, love their neighbor and show what it means to a community, this makes Love Modesto the perfect event for Modesto. It sparks the love of our city and inspires people to be involved year eround. MV: What advice would you give someone that wants to get started in community service and volunteerism? BJM” Jump in, don’t wait for the perfect

MV: This year, Love Modesto and the other Love cities around Modesto will be back in person with the rally and a big get together and even a pancake breakfast. BJM: Yes, we are VERY excited to be BACK!!! We have missed being together as a community. Like many, we pivoted during the pandemic but nothing replaces being downtown, laughing, smiling and loving our city and one another. We are very thankful to the North Modesto Kiwanis who will host a pancake breakfast with all the proceeds going towards Love Modesto. Folks can go to lovemodesto.org to sign up for Love Modesto, purchase t-shirts and pancake breakfast tickets. MV: What is something that people may not know about Love Modesto? BJM: That it is still a grass roots event 100% funded by donations, That is takes a staff of 6 and many volunteers to hold the event, it takes a crew of 12-15 volunteers to put up 150 signs and it takes 70-100 volunteers to host projects. Additionally, its humble success has sparked a movement across the country. Most importantly it is a catalyst to being involved in the community year round, its far great than just one day.

MV: What do you love most about your job? BJM: The people. From a deeply committed board to our CEO Jeff Pishney and his gift to dreaming, to our team who leads with passion and with their hearts, to all the people in the community who lift up this work, embrace it and promote love. Our focus with LSC is about Thinking Love, Inspiring Love, Giving Love. MV: What do you enjoy most about living here in our area? BJM: I love Graffiti Night, Jeremy Renner movies, Elvis impersonators at A & W while drinking root beer out of a frosty mug. I love Modesto Nuts nuts baseball games, I love Mr. T’s donuts, I love events at MJC, I LOVE LOVE our taco trucks and Grub Hub.I love hot summer nights when the sun sets, I love all the way you can get involved. I love Love Modesto.I love these things because they are the special and iconic parts of a place I was born and love with all my heart.

MV: What do you think are the next steps for Love Modesto? BJM: We realize that post pandemic life will never be a replica of pre pandemic life. What the means for Love Modesto is working harder to reengage our community, share our story, and hopefully see more people return to giving back and volunteering. Across the nonprofit world we are seeing a struggle in getting volunteers so the biggest next step is getting people to return to Love Modesto and inviting in those who have not yet experienced it. MV: Describe the perfect Modesto day? BJM: A walk on the Virginia Trail in the morning with my wife and dog Jojo with bright warm sunshine and puffy white clouds, eating dinner on a patio with my wife and friends and bumping into friends everywhere we go and finishing the day with some ice cream

BIG VIEW

EVOLUTION By Chris Murphy

For many of you long time readers, one of things that I find so amazing about the Modesto area is that we are big enough to have the big city things we like, but we are small enough were one person or a small group can make a difference. You see this in so many ways. Chris Ricci and I started the Modesto Area Music Awards, Kate Trompetter, Ruhi Sheikh and Trisha Rosenow started Mod Shop and Porchfest, Lonny Davis created the Uncle Lonny Presents and Hope Haven West, Sam Pierstorff and Greg Edwards started the Ill List and Slam on Rye, Irene Rigney and Becky Wilbur launched the first Graceada Park renovation in 1998 and Jake and Katie Barber launched the new Modesto Children’s Museum, Bette Belle Smith launched so many things and Jeff Pishney started something called Love Modesto. There are so many amazing examples of really successful things that have made our community better that started with the ideas and the efforts of one or two people. We live in a special place where teamwork and volunteerism go hand in hand. On thing I do know is that time flies when you are doing good things. I look back on the last 30 years of community involvement, and there have been wonderful things that have happened and time has sped by. My girls were so little when we worked on Graceada Park and in the blink of an eye, they are married with families. I’m sure the same thing is happening to you. It seems crazy that it was in 2008 and 2009 when these simple white signs that read Love Modesto with a heart were mysteriously popping up all over town. Then bumper stickers followed and soon people all over town were asking about Love Modesto. Brilliant marketing. That first year there were over 70 projects and people gathered in downtown Modesto on March 7, 2009 to meet up, meet each other, find their projects and as a giant group, all spread out across the city to improved the lives of others and places. It was truly amazing. People felt good, they felt like they had accomplished something and everybody walked a little taller and had that feeling of accomplishment. This mission and the feeling is the same thing we want ModestoView readers to feel, that they are doing their part to make Modesto better.

Love Modesto

was a project that Jeff Pishney started when he was a community outreach coordinator at Big Valley Church. ModestoView has been a supporter of Love Modesto for over a decade and back in 2016, we asked Jeff about the genesis of Love Modesto back in 2007. ModestoView: Who came up with “Love Modesto” theme? Jeff Pishney: This theme was birthed out of a reaction of a sad slogan I heard from some college students – “Modesto Sucks”. What if we turned this completely around? It was certainly not original, but myself and others had this idea of “I Love Modesto” and putting this slogan on t-shirts and decals to give these out. Around that time I also came across an initiative in Portland, Oregon called “Love Portland”. I knew “Love Modesto” was the name. It first hit me something bigger was going on at the first Love Modesto when we’re hoping for 100 people to show up and over 1,200 people came out to love our city. It hit me again two years later when we first up our large signs up around town and all the people beeping their horn and shouting out encouragement. It was that same year that we first gathered downtown with around 2,000 people showing up. I remember standing on that stage looking out and knew that we were going to help change the narrative of city.

quickly evolved as people from Ceres got involved and wanted their own city on their Love Ceres yard sign and they would organize their own local event. Soon after, Jeff created Love our Cities that became a place to reach out, not only in our area, but across the state and the USA. Currently there are over 100 cities connected with Love our Cities. There are an amazing 1.5 million volunteer hours and $28.5 worth of volunteer services. Love our Cities was named the 2020 California non-profit of the year. www.loveourcities.org

Love our Schools

One of Love Modesto’s goals has been to create the same volunteer spirit for our schools. Back in 2016, Jeff wondered, what if we could create the same volunteer network for each of our schools. How much impact could that have on the kids and teachers in our community? Love Our Schools is where you can find practical ways to help schools address needs to help remove barriers to our student’s success, because every child should have someone to help them unlock their potential.

Love our Neighborhoods

Love Our Neighbors is the one stop shop to find the best ways to engage the community throughout the county. This is a great resource to match up needs to potential volunteers. Over the last few years, this has become the go to space for volunteer matching in our community. There is something for any ability and skill. Learn more about organizations, read ratings and reviews, volunteer, and donate.

Love our Kids

Love ALL Our Kids focuses on families affected by foster care and provides tangible ways you can help a family in need. This is such an underserved part of our community and there are ways to help with school supplies and other resources.

Love Stanislaus

A few years ago, these programs were all rolled into a new organization called Love Stanislaus County. Visitors to this site can select what areas that meet their needs and desire to get involved. This is the main jumping point for Love our Schools, Love our Neighborhoods and Love our Kids and to foster volunteer relationships. www.lovestanislauscounty.org

Modesto loves Love Modesto

Back in 2016, Modesto proclaimed that April was Love Modesto Month. So here we are, in April celebrating the great volunteer spirit that is Love Modesto, Love Ceres, Love Patterson and so much more.

Love Modesto 2022 – April 30

Now for the big news! Love Modesto is back with the full rally and the volunteer get together. Sidelined during the pandemic, the volunteer projects sill happened without the gathering. This year it will be bigger and better than ever on April 30. Located at the corner of 10th and I Street, the Love Modesto rally will begin with a pancake breakfast and vendor booths along I street. From 7 am to 9 am, volunteers will gather and find their projects. Around 8 am the rally will begin with a lot of fun and surprises. At 9 am, volunteers will fan out across the city to find their projects. There is something for any skill level and any interest. DOWNEY VIEW

Thomas Downey High School - 70 Years of History A few weeks ago, I ran into some folks planning a gala. It was for Downey High School (my alma matter and soon to be my kids) to celebrate the 70th graduating class. What an interesting celebration, we thought, so what has happened with Downey, since its opening? Thomas Downey was an esteemed educator and the first Principal of Modesto High School. Opening in 1951, with Principal Milford Olson, Downey was home to 670 students and 46 teachers. The current Principal is Dave Sanchez, who reports the current student body is about, 2,000. A far cry from opening day. For about 2 decades, Downey was the only other public high school before Davis was constructed. More wings and a modern cafeteria were approved in 1954. Prior to that, the Knights Round Table (across the street and later known as Mamie’s) was the source of food service. Additionally, a second football stadium was built at Downey as long-range planning by the school district, as a shared facility for future construction, ultimately Davis and Beyer, who to this day, do not have stadiums. All the newer high schools have stadiums on campus.

18

As locals, when we think about famous people from Downey, one name rises high. Lucas. George Lucas, class of 1962, first came to fame for his very personal interpretation of his life at Downey High School, and the struggles of leaving high school for college, junior college or work. Set against the Viet Nam war, the movie immortalized cruising and its central role in Modesto culture, so much so, it reinvigorated a nation in cruising while creating

MODESTO VIEW MAGAZINE

an international interest. So much so, that regularly foreign visitors attend the American Graffiti Car Show and Festival and are making many inquiries to the Graffiti Museum. Oh yeah. He also created Star Wars. In my years at Downey, Jerome Kopp was the principal. He was very proud to lead the school, and created his motto, “Make a Difference Downey”. His right-hand man was Joseph Gregori, who was an energetic

and likeable character, and now has a high school that bears his name. Running the band, was George Gardner, who many of us know as the Director for MoBand at Concerts in the Park. Spirited and friendly rivalry was a part of the everyday existence then. Sometimes we would return to campus to find that the Block D at the football stadium had been repainted, Davis green and gold. Although I never saw it myself, it was reported the Davis pool was dyed blue. Likely criminal acts in 2022. Downey has had a long and successful academic history and has been a central part of our community for all these 70 years. So, about that Gala, it is Saturday, April 23, 2022, 6-9pm. This includes dinner from Downey Culinary in the cafeteria for $30 per person. Of course, silent auction items are available, and all proceed go to the student body. And yes, there will be a car show. For more information you may contact; Delorimier.E@monet.k12.ca.us A special thanks for historical information to Mr. Burt Vasche. “Een nieuwe lente, een nieuw geluid,” as they say in the Netherlands. A new spring, a new sound. After a two-month delay, Sunday Afternoons At CBS is hosting its annual Valentine Concert & Tea on April 3 at 3 PM. The torch has passed to Liisa Davila to headline this program of opera, Broadway selections, jazz standards, singalongs and other treats. I’ve been aching to enjoy this year’s cabaret and I know a lot of people must be feeling it too. Liisa has performed for the masses in NYC, SF and LA, and serves as assistant conductor and chorus director for Opera Modesto. She’ll be joined by her husband Mark and daughter Isabella in the program as well, along with collaborator Jordan Williams. This Valentine special is one of the sweetest events that CBS hosts, and that’s even before all the baked goodies. Full afternoon tea will accompany the concert: scones, tea sandwiches, pastries, chocolates and a variety of teas. Tickets are available by calling the CBS office at 209 571-6060. SONG WRITER VIEW

Last month I had the pleasure of seeing Melissa Etheridge live at our Gallo Center for the Arts. It was a frenetic rocking night of music filled with sensual lyrics, tight, rhythmic melodies and ballads almost too personal for public consumption. I was thinking about what kind of obstacles she must have faced to get to this point. Nevertheless, she persisted. I can only draw upon my own experience for insight as to what that is like. Too often words are spoken by the people in charge about opportunities that never come to fruition and tiny pieces of leftover hope get given to you for consideration as the last choice. I won’t stop mentioning these things until it changes. At press time I will have sat in a sold-out audience and witnessed Bonnie Raitt do what she does best- mesmerize a crowd and leave them wanting more. It is huge that we get to see such powerhouse female artist composers come through one venue in succession. It’s still not equitable enough for this to be normal. I played a local Brunch spot just last Fall where a whole lot of friends showed up and spent lots of money. After the gig I went for payout at the bar and the young man there did not respond

when I told him I was there to collect the stipend, he looked through me, I asked a second time and he said he was told not to pay just anyone-only to give it to us the “band guys”. I said, “ I AM the band guysit says Patty Castillo Davis and Friends, I’m her.” C’mon, it’s 2022. It is time for equity on all fronts, opportunities, pay, acknowledgement and most of all respect. Let’s start demanding it right here. Right now. On Thursday, April 21, from 5-7 pm there will be live music and free snacks at 950 Tenth St. at the ModSpot art space. All ages welcome. Donations accepted. My group-A Gathering of the Vibes, which boasts two female singers amongst its members will bring their eclectic and dynamic setlist to the Plaza at Tenth street on Friday, April 22 from 7-9 pm. FREE, all ages. Also on April 22, local Americana Troubadour, Chris Doud has a show, up at the Grove House in Mariposa. Chris Doud has partnered with Russel Irwin to bring a tribute show on April 16 to the Prospect Theater that highlights the Bakersfield Sound. Tickets are available at the Prospect Theater Project online box office. Visit the Glenwood Senior Community on Saturday, April 23 for a ROCK N’ POP UP. Come support, local vendors, while enjoying live music from 10 am - 4 pm. As things loosen up during these COVID times and talks of looking for the surge overseas to reach the United States this month please educate yourselves on the ever-changing mandates. More and more venues are implementing guidelines to follow the tide of the virus. Be patient, be kind and things will get back into a fashion that is familiar.

Love Modesto is coming up this month, and with it a spike in community involvement with volunteer projects being organized that pop up all over the city. In prepping to come together to show our love and support for our wonderful city, let’s also take the opportunity to remind ourselves that “loving Modesto” should also mean loving our community’s history and appreciating the historic buildings and landmarks we have. Past preservation efforts, and those assuredly to come, have allowed our downtown and our sprawled city to have architecturally and historically wonderful connections to our past. We must as proud Modestans care for our designated landmarks and other buildings deserving of such status, and must hold on to these places as a continuing source of civic pride. We deserve to have monuments and structures pointing to our past, reflecting the different periods of progress the city has made over the last 150 years. As Harry Marks (Modesto Mayor 1952-1960) was quoted in championing for a new City Hall in 1957: “In this city there is a great need for municipal buildings which are a source of citizen satisfaction – which we can point out with pride. A city hall is more than just an office building. It is a symbol of strength and stability and stature…Modesto needs a city hall which is such a symbol, indicative of public pride and of faith in the future of our community.” The aim at the time was simple: make Modesto an attractive place for future generations with buildings that highlight and represent the strength of the community. The “new” City Hall went in at the site of the burned down Hotel Modesto, and even incorporated a

By Harrison Power

sunken courtyard reflective of the prior hotel’s basement level. Though in the subsequent decades much of “old Modesto” was lost or torn down, today there are vestiges protected or worthy of preservation to be thankful for and to appreciate. With our City looking forward into the future of what our city will look like in the coming decades, the same sentiment of establishing new buildings and features in our city to be proud of ought to be applied to the preservation and acknowledgment of our community’s history as well – to include preservation as part of progress. Efforts of the newly launched Modesto History Project, the McHenry Museum, and other interested groups, are working to highlight these fascinating stories worth knowing as part of our communal fabric, not just tidbits and fun facts relegated to the history books. So as you get ready to love Modesto this month, make sure to love your community’s history too. Look for the Modesto History Project posters throughout downtown buildings and storefronts giving a peak into our town’s past, visit the McHenry Museum to brush up on our city’s colorful history, or drive by a Modesto Landmark that you haven’t visited before.

Roller Skating Fitness

FIT VIEW

By Efren Martinez

It’s hard to believe that getting around with some wheels on your feet can be healthy for you. It’s true! Roller skating is a great way to stay healthy and fit while having fun. This is of course if you can keep yourself from falling and getting hurt. As for myself, I never mastered the art of roller skating. I very much tried in my younger days when falling meant I’d just bounce back up as kids do. Truth be told my kid days are behind me and I don’t bounce anymore if I fall. In fact, if I fall down I may not get back up till the next day. All kidding aside, I’d totally recommend taking up roller skating if at one point in your life you were able to master it. I’m sure it’s like riding a bike, once you know it you never forget. I still have buddies from high school that can do some amazing tricks with skates and skateboards. Remarkable yes, but not so when they fall. Friends let’s be smart when exploring or even continue any fitness lifestyle and

always wear a helmet when skating. I would also advise you to wear knee pads, elbow pads and wrist guards. Let’s face it if you fall at any age and get seriously hurt with a broken leg, wrist or even a head injury your roller skating days are over along with a lot of other things. Fitness for me has never been about how cool I can look, it’s always been safety first. Being injured stinks! Let’s be smart about any kind of fitness we choose to explore. Lately, there has been a lot of talk about building a skating rink in Modesto. May I suggest one not in downtown Modesto but over at the Mary Grogan Soccer park that has plenty of unfinished land? In fact, it only has dirt in the park surrounding the soccer fields. So why not add some grass, a playground, fitness stations and a skating rink to go with the beautiful soccer fields. This would be the perfect family-friendly fitness lifestyle park. Well, these are just a few of my own grand illusions speaking out loud. Always remember that whatever fitness you choose to practice please be safe about it. Cheers to your health! Follow me at www.facebook.com/QuakeFitness & www.facebook.com/quakedj

ROCKABILLY VIEW

Wreck-It Good By Middagh Goodwin

The central valley has a rich and bountiful musical history going back to 1938 when some of the first elements of Rockabilly were heard being played by the Maddox Brothers and Rose. This tradition is being built back up from the ground up since the pandemic closed down live music just over 2 years ago. ModestoView and Trevino’s Barbershop

are presenting a series of rollicking nights of Rockabilly music at the Speakeasy Lounge in downtown Modesto to rebuild and keep that tradition moving forward. Put on your poodle skirt, or leather jacket and grab that can of pomade from Trevino’s and put your pomp up, jump in your 57 Belair and head on down to the Speakeasy at 9 pm on Friday, April 29th. This is a makeup show from January with System 86 opening up night’s festivities. They are joined by Modesto’s own Tony T & the Pendletons. Returning once again from Los Angeles Psychobilly stalwarts The Rocketz. This is going to be one hell of a hoedown that you will not want to miss. This is a 21 plus free show. So once again all you cats and kittens tell your friends and we will see you at the show.

GO Downtown: Streets of Bakersfield

DEAL ENDS THURSDAY, APRIL 14TH

In the tradition of the Johnny Cash Birthday Bash, the Wrong Doers and Chris Doud would like to bring you a night of drinking and dancing to the Bakersfield Sound on April 16th 8 pm at the Prospect Theater Project. The Streets of Bakersfield is an audio homage to those iconic performers as interpreted by The Wrong Doers, Chris Doud, Peter Stavrianoudakis, Patty Castillo Davis, Peter Grimaldi, Tom Vandenavond, and Cole Hinkle. More musicians to be announced.

BARGAIN VIEW Welcoming April

By Monica Barber

April welcomes the blooming flowers and encourages people to step outdoors to take in the beautiful displays of colors. While Ms M tends to think that every spring season might be better than the last, this year looks the most wonderful and promising yet! This spring has blossomed with so many opportunities to absorb the beauty around us and make it worth it on our wallet. Baseball season is right around the corner! Opening day for the Modesto Nuts is April 8th at John Thurman Field! The Nuts take on the San Jose Giants at 7:05 pm. Happy

April

By Grace McNamera

Spring is here, and it looks more beautiful than ever. I love driving through Modesto and seeing the pretty almond blossoms everywhere. I love living in a place that brings out so much beauty. It is important to keep our city loved, and what better way to do that than participating in “Love Modesto.” This special event is happening on April 30th, beginning at 8 am on 10th street in front of the Gallo Center. There will be giveaways, music, free food, fun activities, photos, Modesto Nuts tickets, etc. There are many volunteer options to choose from for this event, such as cleaning

Modesto

up neighborhoods and schools and different food drives for animals or people. In addition, you can help decorate placemats for meals on wheels or help wash our local community helper’s vehicles! This is a great way to get involved and help out our community. I have been doing Love Modesto since the very first one, and it’s a super awesome time. Another fun event coming up is during national library week. The Stanislaus county library holds many programs from April 3rd to the 9th. One is the Teen Book Box. You can get a box filled with treats, swag, and a book picked just for you based on your interests. You return the book and box on the due date, and you can register for another right after. There are also activities such as a painting class for adults and a fun poetry reading. You can find more information on the Stanislaus county library website. I hope you all enjoy this weather and get involved with the wonderful community we have!

Facing the Unknown

By Mary Layton “Boldly go where no-one has gone before” these are the famous words of Captain Picard of Starship Enterprise. Applied to our reality I find this quote comforting. It reminds me how brave we humans really can be. It takes courage and wisdom to navigate through these very challenging times with news that are shocking and remind us daily of our vulnerabilities as humans living on planet Earth. Given what we are faced with nowadays we hardly need to watch scary science fiction movies anymore. There are moments when I watch the news and it seems as though we are in a very scary movie ourselves. Only that we don’t know how the script will end! Of course, this is nothing new, we never been able to know the future. But it seems to me that there’s now more uncertainty in the world than ever, rapid new developments and transformation, things that we didn’t have to deal with or are encountering for the first time. What helps me to be more at ease with the

unknown is to take good care of myself. I give myself plenty of rest and healthy food. When I take the time out from my busy schedule to sit still and meditate I feel that my breathing becomes deeper, nourishes and invigorates me. All I can ever know is this moment that I live in. So I take one moment at a time, one day at a time and make the best of it. I greatly benefit from taking walks in nature. Practicing Tai Chi or Yoga or doing exercises that quiet the mind while strengthening the body are very good! These type of exercises are available right here in our town. So go boldly where you haven’t gone before! For more info go to taichi4modesto.com or call (209)572-4518
