Greetings Modesto Fans: Chris and Becky
I love Halloween season! I wish there were the 12 days of Halloween and a couple of days
of national holidays. Everyone has fun and the season is amazing with the fall weather, the big harvest moons, the cool breezes, occasional rains and tasty things like butternut squash ravioli and soup. Have you been digging the 3rd Thursday Art Walks as much as I have? Are you impressed with the fabulous talent of our artists, sculptors and photographers not to mention our musicians and our street singers? So many of my favorite things line up in October as we celebrate our music talent at the 13th Annual Modesto Area Music Awards, the MAMAs at The State, our local food is celebrated at our 2nd Annual Harvest Festival in 10th St Place and many of our local restaurants are featuring fall menus with local produce and then the art world comes out at night with the many Halloween parties, fundraisers, haunted houses and Dio de los Muertos events where the Voodoo of New Orleans and Latin America mixes with our Modesto American Graffiti culture. Yes this is an exciting time of the year and there is no shortage of things to do. See our calendar on pages 24-27 and online at www.modestoview.com. Fall high school sports are a big part of our community and October will see the end of the water polo season and football rankings will soon be decided in the conference playoffs. It is the most Americana feeling at these games, cheering on our local students and begin a part of our team rallying cry. Help your kids with homework as much as possible, help in class if you get a chance and double proofread the college essay so our local Modesto kids can go conquer the globe. In this election season, it doesn’t matter if you are red, blue or purple, Republican, Democrat, Green or Independent, remember to get involved and make sure to make your voice heard and make sure our elected officials put our local priorities and jobs first. Most of all, remember that ModestoView is for you. Tell us what you want, what you want us to cover, send us tips, send your music, send your events so we can help spread the word, and get more of our fellow citizens involved. We all make a difference and we all can help. Thanks for reading ModestoView and for making a positive difference a priority. All the best to you, Chris Murphy Founder and Publisher, ModestoView chrism@modestoview.com

ere I am again in the midst of all that is Modesto. I am the nerd on the laptop in a room full of musicians and I feel just fine about that. That is the beauty of Modesto. These folks look at me like I’m just another creative soul in the atmosphere of creative planets that constantly circle this funny little farm town that we all call home. Life is good. This is pretty nice! October is shaping up to be a crazy month for me. I am lucky enough to be a part of the team that is is putting together the Modesto Area Music Awards and that really gives me a sense of purpose. I am lucky enough to have a voice that I can use to promote all that is good with the Modesto music scene and I have received quite an education in the process. If you don’t give yourself a chance to get out and explore the scene, I’d recommend that you do. Start on a Sunday morning at Deva Cafe and listen to the Poorhouse Millionaires sing the blues. This event has become a church of sorts for me. Think about the tip jar as a collection plate and pray at the alter of the song. You will be blown away. You will wonder why on earth Big Earl and company are not somewhere in New Orleans in a smoky bar playing for the masses. If you are wondering what on Earth I am talking about, check out the MAMA Awards Facebook page at facebook.com/
Lovecore bears its soul at the new weekly Monday night open mic night at Firkin and Fox. mamaawards. We have been uploading a wild variety of information about local artists, venues and events. You might find yourself in a bikini next summer at Lake Tulloch taking in an afternoon of DJ beats at a Bump event or you might find yourself wanting to mosey somewhere while wearing a cowboy hat after taking in a night at the Cow Track in Oakdale. Modesto is pretty diverse and that is one of the reasons that I am so happy here. I have recently learned about a young rapper from Gregori High School named Domz that has been viewed nearly two million times on Youtube and I was happy to hear that this year’s Valley’s Got Talent winner, Stop Motion Poetry is set to have a song featured in a major motion picture. Both of these acts are nominated for 2012 MAMA awards. I got some great feedback on my FamousView article last month about practicing what I preach and trying new things. I am

practicing what I preach right now. I started writing this tonight in a living room full of local talent, thought about the article as my friends played on street corners as we walked downtown and now I am finishing it as fifteen year-old musical prodigy, Eli Allsup is about to stand up and blow an audience away at an open-mic night. Life is good. I am totally lost here and I love it. Please don’t hand me a GPS. I’m not ready to find my way. I’d like to live this this dream for a while longer. I am thinking that the voice of Irene Carillo will guide me and that feels right. Look her up. You will be inspired you will find a sense of peace and a dose of hope. We all need that sometimes and it goes down better when served upon the voice of an angel. Follow along with me at www.facebook. com/rporraswriter or find me on Twitter as ModestoFamous. utumn arrives with a new Third Thursday Art Walk map, a Harvest Festival on the 1010 Tenth Plaza, and the Merced Art Hop on October 20. Edgar Degas, “The Private Impressionist” will open at Carnegie Arts Center in October. The show features Degas drawings, printmaking and photos related to his personal and experimental work, not usually seen in exhibitions featuring his more famous paintings. David Schroeder is the host artist/photographer and organizer of the new Photographers Show at Central California Art Association/Mistlin Gallery. Photographers for this show were invited to demonstrate the Impact of the Digital Revolution on Photography. Many of the participants will host workshops at the gallery during the course of the show and the show itself should be an interesting display showing us the cutting edge of the photographic art forms. Artist Corey West has been featured at the Chartreuse Muse, something I missed in last month’s column. Corey was one of the artists whose work was purchased in last year’s Family Justice Center annual art show and open house. Chartreuse Muse will have a new show – Family Justice Center and Artist’s cooperation show opening October 17, where regional artists
will show works inspired by works of children in the center’s children’s art programs. Much of the center’s work involves services to victims of domestic violence and other needs. This show will run through November 3. The CSU Stanislaus and Modesto Art Museum Building Imagination Gallery and Theatre held its Grand Opening during the September Art Walk. Greg and Mark Paul Runnels have applied to be filmmakers in residence, and will be holding their Modesto Film Festival there. Check out the new gallery at 1009 J Street, next door to Mistlin Gallery. The Stanislaus Artists Open Studio steering committee is back at work on the 2013 event, April 6 and 7. Artist fee to show at their open studio, or group show spot will again be $20.00 entry, no commissions on sales. Expected deadline to enter for 2013 is December 1. Artists involved in the two and three dimensional art forms, sculpture, painting, jewelry, woodworking, glass, mixed media, photography, and other art media are invited to join the map of studios open throughout Stanislaus County and adjoining areas over the first weekend in April. This is the third year for this initiative of the Stanislaus County Regional Travel and Tourism Round Table. I will be spending part of my birthday month over in Santa Cruz County, with a three month show to hang mid-month in Barry Tanner’s recording studio, in the former Boulder Creek Post Office. Contact me for opening information and directions how to find the show on Mt Herman Road and Hwy 9. Mercenary_graphics@yahoo. com Other shows to look for in our area are the Western Art Show out in Oakdale. Ripon hosts its Vines and Easels show, and a number of the holiday boutique events start up in the holiday season. November will be loaded with such events. Bacchus is Back! By Dana Johnson
FB: Dana’s Family Kitchen FOX40: see Chef Dana every 1st Friday of the month
The doors again at Bacchus are open again!
After a brief hiatus, one of Modesto’s most favorite premiere dining establishments is welcoming patrons back to indulge in a lavishly abundant dining experience. So I sat down with the new general manager, Chad Jackson, to take in all the juicy details. Chad at the enthusiastic age of 26, shared with me how the staff has a fresh energy to service each guest. He was excited to talk about the food, “no foo la-la” on the menu as they cater to the well balanced Modesto cliental. Well thought out food that lets the flavors speak for themselves. Chad told me that now that he has been exposed to downtown Modesto he will dine and socialize here regularly. Chad has a pit bull and likes to play basketball, golf, and he works out! Chad loves people and the interactions with patrons and staff. You will find him most comfortable working and circulating the dining room floor at Bacchus. I’m always thrilled to enter the kitchen of a restaurant that is like the home of its executive chef! That is where I found Nolan Henderson, at the confident smiling age of 24 and Bacchus’ Executive Chef since October 2008. Chef Nolan has an exuberant passion for the culinary arts backed by his natural gift and MJC culinary education. He is a Modesto resident who likes short ribs, a traditional breakfast, and has a sweet tooth for Mr. T’s doughnuts and especially the blueberry fritters! I found him to be uniquely diverse, from being a Disneyland lover to a cigar smoker! Plus to stay fit Chef Nolan does Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. He also sports a breast cancer awareness bracelet. Chef Nolan impressed me with a grilled Painted Hills beef flat iron steak, Yukon potato mash, and Caesar butter melted over seasonal vegetables fresh from Modesto’s farmer’s market. Oh yeah! It was sooooo Dana~licous! When Chef Nolan was telling me about his culinary creations, he said, “It’s who I am and I’m no one trick pony!” I concur!

Bacchus has a lunch and dinner menus to marvel over. When ordering you may find yourself like me, “I’d like the Bacchus bread, downtown wedge, and the lamb chops. No wait! Crab cakes, creamy Stanislaus tomato soup, and the ribeye!” No kidding, 72 bottles of wine on their list! A table side dessert tray including bread pudding and my fave crème brulee’. I’m going to need to work out! I was also delighted to know one of the charities Bacchus sponsors is One Hope Mondavi Family Wines! Modesto View signature question to
both Chad and Chef Nolan: Beatles or Stones? Chad said Beatles only to upset Dana~licious and then Chef Nolan also said Beatles, but quickly added that there is no such thing as bad music and he likes everything from Conway Twitty to Wiz Khalifa. Really? Oh to be in my 20’s again! Check in on FB for live music coming to Bacchus in November!
Bacchus Kobe Bistro Burger Written by Nolan Henderson, Executive Chef, Bacchus Food and Spirits
One eight ounce patty high quality ground beef 75/25 lean (we use American Wagyu at the restaurant, but angus would be great too!) One light and buttery bun Frisee, spring mix or leaf lettuce Sliced tomato Sliced red onion Tillamook white cheddar, sliced thinly Two pieces crispy fried applewood smoked bacon Butter for brushing Kosher salt(big crystals) Fresh ground black pepper Pre heat a grill pan or cast iron skillet. Form a one half inch thick patty with your delicious ground beef. Brush patty with butter and season liberally with kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper. Place patty in hot skillet and repeat butter\salt\pepper on other side. Press your thumb into the middle of the burger to form a dimple. This helps prevent the meat from balling up. Cook for three minutes on each side for medium rare. Remove patty from skillet and toast your bun over medium heat until golden brown. Now dress your burger with your favorite toppings and enjoy with a big kosher pickle and a cold draft beer!!

SENIORS
Care Connections - Caring for our Senior Community An Administrator for 25 years and then started Care Connections a health information company, teaching the public how to protect your loved ones in health care settings.
By: Debra Campbell
PLAY A CRITICAL ROLE IN DECIDING ELECTIONS It’s change seniors believe in and they are poised to vote at historic levels on Election Day. seniors and baby boomers are more engaged in the election and more enthusiastic about voting than in previous elections.
It’s the future that concerns Seniors. They have lived the glory of the American superpower. They compare that past to today’s fragile state. This is the “Golden Years” but they know that change has to come for our future generations. Voting is one of the dearest rights we have as American citizens. If you need some extra help, federal and state laws say that you are entitled to simple accommodations that will preserve your rights to vote. Four federal laws protect the right to vote for to disabled and elderly voters who have specific needs. Basically you need to know: • Your polling place needs to be accessible. Today, there are 36 million adults age 65 and over in the United States. This population is expected to nearly double nationally and statewide over the next 30 years. With an increasing average life expectancy for Americans reaching over 75 years of age,
the need for voting accessibility will only increase. • If you cannot read your Voter Information Guide, there are large print and audio versions available from the Secretary of State’s office. • Any voter who needs help in casting a ballot is entitled to request assistance. In California a pollworker can provide assistance or the voter may select a person of his or her choice. If you are unable to mark your ballot yourself, you may select up to two people to help you cast your vote. The persons may not be your employer, your employer’s agent or your labor union leader or agent. • You have the right to request an absentee or mail ballot right up to Election Day. • You also have the right to curbside voting if you cannot go into the polls. • The law requires that everyone who works
in a polling place on Election Day receive training, including instruction on the rights of voters with disabilities. What a shame if in our community we were to lose out on the years of wisdom and experience that could help guide us when older voters are unable to cast their ballot. Throughout our nation’s history, men and women have fought to guarantee the right to vote to us. Many of them died for this right and we honor them when we cast our ballot. Please check in with family, friends, and neighbors who might need help voting and be sure that our wise older American voices are counted. YOUR VOTE MATTERS!

atic time for millions of kids all over the USA. This is the time when many are left unattended, have working parents or even worse, allow time to become involved with gangs or other groups. Kids need a safe place to hang out with other kids with adult involvement. A huge new opportunity is coming to Modesto, and it is one that has been in the USA for over 150 years. Modesto is one of the largest cities in the USA that does not have a Boys and Girls Club.. This is an important endeavor for Modesto. The time after school gets out can make or break a future of a student in need. A new board of directors and a plan to launch next year is ready to go. We spoke with Founding Board Member, Dave Gianelli and Acting CEO Jim Richards along with Kenni Friedman and Patrick Gianelli on the founding of this important organization. MV: These are challenging times, what are the risks of having youth that are lacking guidance and direction? Dave Gianelli and Jim Richards: As you noted at Rotary, gangs are a problem in Modesto, as they are throughout the country. The reality is that in the growth and development of all children, the need to come together and affiliate in groups is extremely strong. As a result, youth will come together in groups either in a positive environment, like the Boys & Girls Clubs, or a negative, unsupervised environment on the street. The problems that kids get into on the street are directly related to the lack of supervision, boredom, and the gang mentality. An active Boys & Girls Club provides the same experience, addressing the need to congregate with friends, but in a positive, adult supervised environment with countless programs and activities to engage all of our members. MV: Where and when did the Boys and Girls Clubs begin? The first BGC was started in 1860 by three women in Hartford, Connecticut. What they started, and why they started it, more than 150 years ago is still relevant and is
12
still the model used today. In the 1860s, east coast cities were struggling with the industrial revolution. Because there was no mandatory school, many children and teens were on the street. The founders of the first club believed that these children and youth were not broken, they didn’t need to be fixed, what they needed was access to knowledge, caring adults, and resources--a safe place to congregate. The first club provided a safe place. These ladies fed the children and took care of their nutritional needs. They had physical activities, addressing their physical needs. They understood the need for job skill development, so they created work opportunities. They believed that the kids needed leadership experiences and opportunities to develop a positive moral compass. Today, BGC provide very similar experiences understanding that the majority of us are experiential learners. So BGC do not try to compete with the schools, but rather create an asset-rich environment with caring adults in a safe place allowing children and teens to grow and learn. MV: Why has it taken so long to get a Boys and Girls Club in Modesto? Although there have been several attempts in the past, I don’t believe that the prior efforts in Modesto had the right leadership. Today, I believe we have the right team of concerned community leaders to bring BGC services to this community. Modesto is one of the largest cities in the country without BGC services. There are over 4000
BGCs in every state and on every US military installation around the world, serving 4 million boys and girls. There is a reason BGCA is the largest provider of out of school youth development services in the country - the service delivery model works. It has continued significant investment in program design and development all of which is available to all BGC affiliates. MV: Are all boys and girls welcome, regardless of race or orientation? One of the cornerstones of the success of the BGC movement is that all BGCs are open to all children. There are no means tests, no academic requirement--all children in the community, regardless of race, religion, background, etc. are welcome in the BGC. Explain the benefits of having strong after school programs? I think most adults are aware that many kids come home to an empty house after school. Without a strong, and easily accessible, after school program, many children do not have a caring adult available to help them with homework, to guide them in decision-making, to support them in their extracurricular activities. So we are raising a generation of children through the media, or worst case scenario, kids grow up on the street with gangs or other negative influences. Although we have some excellent after school programs, the vast majority of kids in Stanislaus County do not have access to affordable after school opportunities. A strong after school program, like
the BGC, which has an academic element, a health element, and a leadership development element, provides kids with continuous opportunities, managed by trained, caring adults, providing experiential opportunities for kids to grow. High school graduation is directly affected by a child’s reading capabilities in the third grade. We know that a child who enters the fourth grade with inadequate reading skills has a much higher chance to drop out than a child whose reading skills are grade level. A successful after school program is able to address the specific needs of individual children and provide them with the supports and opportunities they need to not only succeed in school, but to develop the personal skill sets to be successful in life. MV: Is there anything unique about the Modesto area that this Boys and Girls Club can do differently? One of the many unique things about Modesto is that there are far fewer youth serving agencies and opportunities than most of the communities I have worked in the last 40 years. Again, although we have some excellent after school programs, first of all, there are far too few, and second, there isn’t another program that offers the diversity of opportunity as that is offered by a BGC. MV: Do Boys and Girls Clubs increase graduation rates and civic involvement? Over the last 30 years, there have been three independent Harris polls conducted. In each of the Harris polls, BGC alumni
For more Modesto info: www.modestoview.com
identified regular attendance at BGC as the key reason they graduated from high school and were able to avoid the lure of the streets. In a recent study commissioned by the Alliance of BGC in LA County, the results showed that high school teens attending the local BGC had a graduation rate significantly higher than their peers who did not attend. Most BGCs, either through the Keystone club, or their own civic engagement efforts, involve their teens in countless civic service/engagement opportunities. In 2010, as part of the census,
Keystone clubs around the country work with local census bureaus reaching out to the most underrepresented populations in their communities. That is just one example of a national Keystone project. MV: How did the haunted house idea come to be? Chris Ricci came up with the idea. He’s had experience with Haunted Houses and Haunted Ships. When will the Boys and Girls Club be fully operational? We expect to start with a summer program

in 2013. Right now we are in the organizational development stage and just about to kick of our annual individual giving fundraising. We just got our IRS 501c(3) letter making donations to the Boys & Girls Clubs of Stanislaus County tax deductible. By next fall we intend to be providing programs in this community through various school sites and possibly through parks and rec facilities. We want to go where the children are and focus on providing quality programs before focusing on a facility. MV: What can people do to get involved or lend a hand? We now need funds and we need people who want to help fund raise. If we are to be able to run summer programs we are going to need to have an initial budget of over $250,000. We are just getting started in the process of resource development and have many plans. More Bright Moments
M.C. F WLER P H O T O G R A P H Y
By Eric Benson More bright moments are in store. While
my critic’s choice of events to go to in October is not a spooktacular event, if you have not heard of Dan Hicks & His Hot Licks, you should go to the State Theatre on October 6th. Dan is an eclectic lyricist who uses the swing idiom to tell tales of life with humor drier than the dust bowl. “Love makes the world go round, ah that and the Columbian Cocaine Cartel, those two things ladies & gentlemen.” He always has an incredible band and features the Lickettes on vocal harmony. Tunes such as “How Can I Miss You When You Won’t Go Away”, “I Scare Myself ”, and “Where’s the Money...When You Won’t Give Me Nothing Else” are classic. Also at the State: Leo Kottke, king of slide guitar and finger pickin’ is coming Oct. 12th, and Beatlemania comes through Sunday Oct. 14 at 3 p.m. Check out www. thestate.org for details. The Gallo brings in Jake Shimabukuro, the Jimmy Hendrix of Ukulele Oct. 9. I know it’s a stretch but Jake is nothing short of amazing. He has redefined the instrument with shakes of Jazz, rock, classical, Hawaiian, and folk music with technical and soulful chops. Don’t look for Jake to play with his teeth or set his instrument on fire though. And Doc Severinsen, 30 yr. alumni from Johnny Carson, plays Oct. 10 with more depth than TV could support. His band incorporates Spanish music, Jazz, movie music even Gypsy Jazz ala Django Reinhardt. Reg Evans of Central Valley Music Group is bringing in some hard hittin’ legends of Latin Rock. Friday Oct. 19 Sapo with Richard Bean headlines with opener Latin Essence and El Marauder at the Fat Cat Music House. Richard was the lead singer for the Platinum hit “Suavecito”. For a family friendly all age venue, the Barkin’ Dog Grill in downtown Modesto serves up some good food with a side of music. The Dog’s highlights for October are: 5th: Blue & Beige fronted by sax man Marty Martinez, 6th: Big Earl & the Cryin’

State Theatre, the true home of the MAMAs. This will be an amazing show this year with over 10 live performances, 19 awards including a new Youth Band category this year as MAMA recognizes the past and sets a path to the future. The show will hosted by the very talented and fun Alan Sanchez of Good Day Sacramento. Alan and his morning show have been a big supporter of the Modesto area music scene for many years and we all they do. In 2000, crammed into Club Maxx at the Doubletree, the MAMAs became a showcase for the best local talent in all kinds of music from metal, to acoustic, jazz to blues and hip hop to House DJ. Amazing performances over the years have come from Ernie Bucio, Good Luck Thrift Store, Flying Blind, UVR, Megan Slankard, DAM, House of Orange, Moonshine Bandits, Devante, Puffin Billies and so many more. More incredible performances and surprises are sure to happen this year and this years’ line up will be stellar and feature some amazing surprises. 7 Questions:
Dan Hicks and His Hot Licks By Chris Murphy One of the most interesting musicians is
Dan Hicks. The musical world has gotten smaller and it is so easy to hear different music from all over the world. It is really rare that an artist is able to combine so many world sounds and make crazy interesting music out of it all. Dan Hicks, since playing jazz in early 50s and forming bands during the roots of Rock and Roll, has a musical variety that really is unique and equaled by very few. He has collaborated with many legends of music and has seen the cover of Rolling Stone twice. His new CD Tangled Tales is phenomenal. Dan will be at the State Theatre on October 6 and this concert needs to be on your Must Go list. We caught up with Dan Hicks from his Santa Rosa home. Let’s meet Dan Hicks. ModestoView: I love music and enjoy the history of the hillbilly, rockabilly and gypsy music. Your roots must go back with the Maddox Bros and Rose, the cowboy and hillbilly music that were on the radio in the 40s and 50s and must have influenced you. Dan Hicks: They could have, my parents were in the Army and Air Force. We lived in Vallejo and they liked country music. As a kid, that is what we listened to on the radio. When I started playing guitar when I was 20 years old, I listened to a lot of folk music, Bob Wills and Texas Playboys, and Hank Williams. I am kind of kind of eclectic in a way, putting in the jazz stuff. We can even put that into kind of thing into a Jimmy Rogers tune. MV: Modesto is known for the cowboy music of Chester Smith , our American Graffiti and a new hot area for new rockabilly, What do you think of the resurgence of rockabilly? DH: Funny you should say that, I am on the Surf Dog label out of San Diego, and they got a hold of me a few weeks ago and they have signed a new guy named Drake Bell who is also an actor and he is going to do a Rockabilly album. So I am going to be

like to write tunes and get a lead guitar and violin player doing it together. MV: Modesto is the home of American Graffiti and the historic cruise. Did you ever cruise? DH: You know, they made American Graffiti in Petaluma and Santa Rosa. I am from Santa Rosa and that movie looked like high school to me. We would Drag 4th St That would be the thing. We would go up and down the street and that would be the deal, driving back and forth. I am not a rockabilly artist per se, but I like MV: You have so much variety in your that sound and can really do something music. What are some of the surprises the with it. Modesto audience can expect? DH: (Laughs) They will be surprised with MV: Your music is just so clean and some of the tunes we will do. I do some “swangy” and a lot of those licks show up new stuff, and also some of the stuff from in songs like I Scare Myself and are really the 70’s. I really like to do “I Scare Myself ” amazing. What really influences and in- and “Canned Music”. I think anything is spires you now? going to be a surprise since it will be a new experience for Modesto. I have a current DH: Swing jazz is the most predominating list of songs and there will be some old thing for me. I like jazz, scatting and vocal- tunes, some standards, some Jimmy Rodgizing. I’m still singing with the two girls, ers. There are six of us and there is a lot of the Lickettes, doing a lot of harmonies, percussion. The Lickettes have been with making a Swang and Django sound. and I used the play the traditional dixieland and swing jazz. Benny Goodman and Sing Sing Sing were what I loved to do. We did jazz noon-time sessions and I was in a couple of combos. I put a rock band together in the late 50’s I listened to Chuck Berry and I liked Ricky Nelson and the other popular music that was happening. I think that there is going to be something for everyone at this show. There is a similar sound to my music but there is a variety of what I do, you can hear it, it is the bass or we go from
song to song, one will be bluesy, country, swing and we do some Latin influences as well. It will be a very fun evening. Dan Hicks and the Hot Licks State Theatre – October 6 Doors at 7 pm. As many of you already know I am in
a couple of local bands. Big Earl and the Cryin’ Shame has been playing around Modesto for nearly six years and I am in another band call the Poorhouse Millionaires that has been together for just about a year. Now with that little bit of backstory out of the way, I want to share a little about something new I am trying with the Poor House Millionaires that just may be an experiment that may work for other bands in our area. We just launched a Kickstarter campaign. Kickstarter.com is a website or funding platform that helps people raise money for creative projects and rewards backers with a variety of incentives. In our case, backers have the opportunity to score music, posters, live shows and the chance to have us learn a song of their choosing and make a youtube video of our band playing it just for them. All this is being done in an effort to raise money to put out our first CD, which will be called “Prevention Intervention”. It all sounds pretty great right? Well I think it is. Its taken a lot of work and planning and
getting friends to help including Wayne Campbell and Ruben Porras on the technical and content development side and Ray Vazira and Eli Lester on the band side. This whole project has been a bit stressful, but doing anything this complicated, involved and so close to the heart is always difficult. Now that the project is launched, I feel very confident that we will reach our modest goal of $2,800 and even I think we have a good chance of going over. That would help us develop our brand with merchandise and advertising. I hope that you will take a look at our page on Kickstarter.com and consider becoming a backer. I’d personally recommend that you consider using the site to help launch your next creative project. It has given us a voice and a real opportunity to get our efforts off the drawing board and into action. Find the link to our Kickstarter profile the Poorhouse Millionaires Facebook page or on my personal page or you can go to Kickstarter.com and search for “Prevention Intervention-Poorhouse Millionaires CD Release”. I can’t wait to share this CD with all of you and I hope to see you out at a show soon

Let the Battle Begin By Javier Lopez On the streets, an artist’s cred-
ibility is as important as their lyrics. The music that is created in the studio and released into the market will either be criticized or embraced. The artists battling for this year’s Best Urban MAMA award may have never met or even crossed paths. Included in the nominations are a few familiar artists that I have interviewed in past articles of UrbanView including Define & Domz. What may be perceived in the nominations is not necessarily reflected in the hiphop community. Whether or not you have heard of the players in the game, the pawns have made their first move. As a reader, your vote will determine the outcome of the race. This year nominations for Best Urban are Domz, Define, Good Bully (which in-
cludes Cobalt), Valley Stunna, AB Hogish, DEV, Guda Mac, Living Proof, Seany Wad & Purp Reynolds. Last years’ winner was Luna J. She performed at the awards as well. The year before, Clone performed. You will be able to view the awards online live at modestoview.com. The Best Urban category is relatively new to the MAMAs and has been awarded for the last four years. Rumors have it that many artists and fans haven’t quite given the award the respect that is deserves. In due time, it will gain the trust and proper respect it deserves. Until then, vote so your voice will be heard. I challenge all the artists to promote beyond their perceived demographics. I would like to see numbers rise in the number of sales, radio spins and projects. I would rather see unification rather than segregation. The hip hop movement is alive in the 209 area!

The Comeback Kid It took me several tries, but I finally got Joe
LoBianco for this Fit View piece. In fact, those of us who know Joe, know he isn’t one for the limelight. He is someone who will gladly help others from the shadows and prefers not to make a big deal about it. So with that said, Joe agreed to share his inspirational story with our readers in hopes that it would help others, especially those in their 70’s or 80’s who feel they no longer are physically able to participate in events dominated by young adults or who have experienced similar or other serious medical problems such as he. In 1981 when he was 53 years old, he had to have open-heart surgery (quadruple bypass) and while the surgery was successful he experienced a long period of depression. Without going into too much details of this period in his life, Joe finally defeated his depression by starting a walking exercise program. At first it was just fast walking over flat terrain, then gradually easing into

By Efren Martinez hill walking and eventually hiking in the local mountains. But soon after Joe had the depression dragon by the tail, he was diagnosed with prostate cancer. He had surgery and 25 days of radiation treatments. This time Joe says there was no period of depression and after a proper healing process he resumed his exercise activities. Clearly his healthy lifestyle change with walking and hiking and running helped him overcome the depression. Running? Yes, running Modesto View Readers. At the age of 75 a good friend of Joe’s asked him to join in a 2-mile race. At first Joe was a little apprehensive because his buddy was a bit younger than him and frankly thought his friend was a little crazy for doing theses races. But after some thought, he figured he’d try it out and see if he could understand why his friend participated in these races at this late stage in his life. Well he did the race and found that he enjoyed not only the race itself, but also the atmosphere
of congeniality amongst the participants. From then on, Joe was hooked on racing with fun memories flashing back to him of as a youth. Looking back, the best running he did was when the police would bust up their craps games in the schoolyard. Joe recalls that the police didn’t ever really try to chase them but instead would stay behind as they ran away to keep any of their pennies left behind. After all it was during the Great Depression and Joe says every penny meant something in those days. Anyway, Joe and his friend did a few more races that year and each year after. Within the last 3 years, he found he had more time on his hands on weekends so he decided to increase his participation. Joe thinks he did about twenty races in one year, but didn’t really keep an accurate tally. Last year he did record his races and on New Years Eve day 2011 he competed in his fiftieth race of the year. This year barring injury he expects to participate in his fiftieth race the week of his 85th Birthday in October. If all goes well, he hopes to reach sixty races by the end of the 2012. Almost all of Joe’s races have been 5K’s and on occasion a one or two mile race. Joe is clearly on the run again, but this time not from the police but to add another winning age division medal around his neck and another race under his belt. I asked Joe what inspirational words he might share to those who have walked in shoes similar to his. Joe says, “LIFE IS GOOD and my personal motto for life is, it’s OK to be afraid to die, but it is never, never OK to be afraid to live.” From all of us at The Modesto View Magazine, Happy Birthday Joe!
Healthy Running Tips Always check with your Doctor to make sure your healthy enough before you start any exercise program. Always run opposite to traffic. On hot days, run early in the morning, use sunscreen and a visor to keep the sun off your face.

Take 1 day off of running for recovery per every hour you run. Hydrate properly the day before & not so much prior too a run. Careful not to hydrate too much so you don’t washout the glycogen completely in your liver, glycogen is what helps fuel your energy. It’s recommended that your urine should be the color of straw. If it’s too clear, you have washed it out completely. Compression socks help speed up recovery after a run and can be purchased more affordably at any drugstore such as Walgreens. Refuel with carbohydrate shortly after a run; Carbohydrates help to replace muscle and liver glycogen to refuel your energy stores. The current recommendation is a ratio of 2:1 carbohydrate to protein following strength workouts and 4:1 after endurance workouts. Be mindful of traffic & always assume they don’t see you. At any time you feel pain or some discomfort, stop! Listen to your body; it will help prevent a fitness injury. There’s nothing shameful with ending it with a walk even if you started it out with a run. For most, it will be more beneficial as you cool down. I prefer to warm up with a light jog & then stretch it out after my intense workout. Look for more on why in future Fit View Issues.

the United States, there is only one that cannot be prevented, cured or even slowed; Alzheimer’s disease. There are now over 5.4 million Americans living with Alzheimer’s and probably someone you know. When a disease like this afflicts one in eight mature Americans it is hard not to know someone who suffers from this debilitating disease. As if the challenge of dealing with the disease wasn’t tough enough for families and caregivers, the costs of care are overwhelming. The out-of-pocket costs for care are more than $33Billion in the US and only account for 17% of all costs associated with care for those over 65. The Alzheimer’s Aid Society of Northern California is right here in Modesto and provides assistance to the families and victims of this challenging disease. The Society provides essential services that include support groups for families and caregivers every Monday from 10:30 to noon. Helping the caregivers may be the most vital service offered as the effort involved in caring for an Alzheimer’s patient causes ‘caregiver burnout’. If you know someone who has been caring for a friend or family member with Alzheimer’s it is important to realize how tough his or her days can be. The Alzheimer’ Aid Society needs support to help provide services and benefits to the thousands in our area who receive benefit. One simple way you can help is to join them for Dinner at the 3rd Annual Harvest Moon Dinner and Auction on

T’ai Chi Ch’uan (translates to ‘Grand Ultimate Fist’) is an ancient Chinese exercise, martial art and philosophy, benefiting the mind, body and a person’s emotional state, all in one. T’ai Chi is famous for its slow and circular movements. It’s good to slow down, especially as everything in our world is speeding up. T’ai Chi helps to quiet the mind and calm the nerves while exercising and stretching muscles and opening joints. When you come to a T’ai Chi class the first thing you learn is a sequence of movements called the ‘Slow Set”. It is what makes T’ai Chi a moving meditation. The mind is focused and preoccupied with

elementary things like bending, stepping, shifting weight, turning, extending, circling, lifting and balancing. A lot of repetition not only helps with the memorization of the movements and making them your own, but is also what eventually makes the mind quiet and receptive. A quiet mind perceives more and learns better than a busy one. Once the chatter inside subsides, the body relaxes as well. Breathing and circulation of blood and oxygen improve. Even a beginner is able to feel this and leaves the class with red cheeks and a smile. To find a T’ai Chi class go online : taichi4modesto.com or call : ( 209) 572-4518 for more info
