The Independent Guide to the Greater Modesto area since 1997

Modesto, USA A Classic All-American City Something amazing happened on March 1, 2011. The Modesto City Council approved the special designation of 10th and 11th Streets as the Historic Graffiti Cruise Route. This is such a huge milestone in the history of Modesto and for the future of our city. Modesto has a very special brand, one that is all about the small town feel blended with the arts and culture of huge cities, a brand that is fueled by the feeling that is represented in the movie American Graffiti by Modesto native George Lucas. For the first time, we are going take Graffiti Summer to the next level and promote our connection to American Graffiti in new ways that will attract visitors from around the world and create civic pride and a new awareness of our history. This is just the start, people travel around the world to see the Field of Dreams, walk the waterfront in Hoboken, propose at the top of the Empire State building and soon they can stroll the historic streets of American Graffiti. Wop bom a loo bop a whop bam boom. One of the best things

about Modesto is the way our local government encourages people to get involved and speak up. Whether it is acting upon the ideas of a citizen like the cruise route, or engaging in community forums, the city makes it easy to get involved and make a difference. A brilliant example is the partnership of the City of Modesto and the Modesto Garden Club. The Modesto Garden Club creates so much beauty in our city in so many places and our interview this month will blow your mind with the amount of volunteer effort. Whether it is a park partners program, Love Modesto, Rotary, or a NEAT team clean up or pulling the community together to attract the Amgen Tour of California, it is rare that a city welcomes so much cooperation. This is a city that really shines and rallies when there is an exciting innovation, business or opportunity. It just goes to show what happens when we all get involved and share our ideas. Modesto really can be the All-American city in so many ways. Enjoy April here in Modesto.

Sweet and Savory at Greens Markets Light..yet dark, bold..yet sublime. Beatles, yet Stones. By chris murphy

The yin and the yang of the new Greens Market culinary team is nothing short of amazing, exciting and fun. Imagine a giant garden and local suppliers of fresh produce supplying fresh treats and then taking those season offerings and turning them into pastries, entrees, main courses, starters. Radishes show up? Then the menu has radishes. This is as close to culinary improvisation as it gets and the people of the greater Modesto area get to taste the results.

Chef Tobias Diggs and Chef Marvin Boden of Greens Market.

Chef Marvin Boden and Chef Tobias Diggs deliver a daily menu that would impress the whitest of white tablecloth restaurants, but can find its way to your tablecloth and will most definitely find a way into your heart and weekly schedule. Let’s start with something savory shall we? Chef Marvin honed his skills at the Culinary Academy in San Francisco. Growing up in San Diego, he was part

6

of a big family and served as sous chef at his home kitchen for years, preparing the salsas, rice and other supporting dishes. His personal tastes lean toward the Spanish and Latin flavors and prefers a tapas kind philosophy. He has opened restaurants in California and in Albuquerque and finally connected with Ann Endsley as she prepared to open her new concept market in Modesto at the corner of Needham and 10th St, that would be utilizing produce from her Four Season Farms and blend it

with the freshest and tastiest food in the region. Chef Marvin was the perfect fit. Chef Marvin lives in Modesto with this wife and two kids, ages 2 and 10. Inspired by many chefs, Chef Marvin likes the philosophy of Thomas Keller (French Laundry, Bouchon, etc) where the food needs to speak for itself and who sources the absolute best local products. He has a list of over 30 items like, beets, radishes, baby lettuce in season now and will evolve his menu as the seasons change. Chef Marvin and his team prepare a complete line of entrees daily, some that end of packaged for take away. Most are fresh, warm, and ready to be served on your table. Amazing Salmon entrees, tasty chicken and a fabulous Porcaletta. One of his favorites is Fiddlehead Fern and Morel Salad. There are vegan and veggie options prepared daily as well as a variety of side dishes and salads. It would take hours and hours to prepare the variety that you can quickly pick up for dinner prepared by Chef Marvin and the Greens team. The Greens team are his servers and can help you pair your foods and make recommendations for the full meal completion. Needless to say, with all of this activity, his love of mountain biking and gym time are on hold for now as the Greens gets up to full speed. When posed the traditional

ModestoView question, Beatles or Stones, Chef Marvin was all Stones. His older brother pounded them into his head growing up and there they sit today. He is getting his Satisfaction by creating wonderful things to eat. And now for something sweet Growing up in Berkeley, Chef Tobias Diggs had access to the most innovative cuisine in the world. The bakeries like Fat Apples, the produce, the anything goes culture leads to innovative thinking. As a kid, he loved to cook and making biscuits was his early training. Culinary Academy of San Francisco trained, Tobias was creating amazing pastries for the Village Baking Company. A chance connection with Chef Marvin stopped Chef Tobias from taking his family and moving to Boston for a new food venture. Pastries are a work of art, and the taste is so decadent. I have tasted and photographed pastries around the world and his offering is stellar. I confess I ate 3 of his croissants while I wrote this. Eating a pastry or a dessert is a reward, even for Chef Tobias, as there is a lot of waiting, baking, rising, so the final taste is a payoff. Cheese Puffs, this is the treat that Chef Tobias enjoys the most and the one most demanded by his family of his wife (who also cooks) and 4 kids, ages 10, 10, 6 and 5. They also keep a steady

request his cinnamon rolls, that you too can taste at Greens. One of ModestoView’s favorite treats is the bread pudding. There are large ones, small ones and many flavors and even a French Toast bread pudding. (Yum) Chef Tobias loves to experiment with different fruits, Pink Lady apples and so much more. Bread pudding is the treat that you can snack on all day. Put it away, take a break and come back later. Chef Tobias wants a variety of different items, that is why you see one or two muffin flavors, but a wide range of different and interesting treats from Vanilla Cupcakes to Twice Baked Breakfast Burritos. The Strawberry and rhubarb season is almost here and this will be a fantastic season at greens. Psst. Here is a secret that was leaked out of the kitchen, two words. “Ice cream” Stay Tuned. So, finally, we asked Chef Tobias “the Question” Beatles or Stones, the answer was Beatles all the way. "Beatles songs are amazing and every song turns into a family sing-a-long", quipped Chef Tobias. Greens tasty food is prepared in the exhibition kitchen area at 953 10th St in downtown Modesto. This serves as their office and features two complete kitchens, one for Chef Marvin and one for pastry Chef Tobias. Our fingers are crossed for a future possible sit down restaurant, but for now, this kitchen is running at full speed serving up the savoriest and the sweetest treats.

Shrooming at the Speakeasy "GREAT PEOPLE, GREAT MUSIC AND GREAT DRINKS By Madison Murphy

I just finished listening to White Rabbit by Grace Potter in the car and then I stepped into the cool and trippy red lights of the Speakeasy Lounge. Bypassed the martini glass shaped tables and cool private booths, I stepped up to the bar and started chatting away with Mary Walton and Gina Rossi.

arts & entertainment Epic Modesto Music!

Okay local music fans we are going to start some local music history at ModestoView. Over the years we have had so many bands, some make it on to big things, some have folded and some are still punching through. I love local music and there are some serious Hall of Fame songs. Here are some, in our opinion, the most Epic Modesto music. What are your top 5 local songs? What is on your MAMA Radio. What should ModestoView feature on our all-time top Modesto play list? He’s Simple, He’s Dumb, He’s the Pilot Grandaddy Wow. This song from the CD Sophtware Slump, teases, sucks you in, builds you up, tears you apart and then let’s you go. The fragile Jason Lytle vocals, the Jim Fairchild count in, and then the build. This song, (with the lumberjack video) was the epic moment for me at the sold-out Fillmore show where Super Furry Animals opened. Behind Closed Eyes Sapo Sueno Jeff Bonilla’s Sapo Sueno delivered this amazing track, open chords, chimes, haunting vocals, a building finish into total cathedral cathartic chanting mayhem. Watching Jeff play this song, reaching over and hammering the base string, only confirms what a talented musician and composer he is. This is a song that deserves multiple repeats. Fall Away Fissure This band should NEVER have broken up. They were just getting going, getting radio play and then packed it in. Shame. The soaring vocals, cello searing guitars and a call out to the heavens on the chorus keeps Fall Away as my ending song on a grueling work out. It is so well produced and sounds so good. You must listen again now. Ok I gave you three hints, email us your fave Modesto tracks so we can make the ultimate Modesto Mix and turn more people on to local music. To listen to these, click on www.modestoview. Email your Modesto Playlist now. mama@modestoview.com com for the links. You will be blown away.

This has been a crazy month. We are right in the middle of swim season and I write this as we are freshly frozen from our swim meet in a storm. I love Modesto High School and the things that we do, my history teacher Mr. Chiavetta really makes students take a bigger look at the world. It is really important to see what is happening in the world around us. I had a chance to visit South Africa and was really amazed how different our cultures are and how disposable things are in the USA. When you have a culture where so many have so little, it seems like everything gets used and reused. They even have to pay extra for bags at the store, Every time you toss out a plastic bottle, think about how it can get used again. This is why I really want people to know about the Rich Man Poor Man Dinner. Mr. C has made me and the youth of Modesto more aware about what we have and how we can help those that don’t have. I offered my column to him for this important event.

Rich Man/Poor Man Dinner Saturday, April 16th, Modesto Church of the Brethren, $10 donation By Mike Chiavetta One of the gravest issues confronting this world is the mis-distribution of resources and the huge discrepancy between the haves and have-nots. As certain developed countries get the lion’s share of food and resources the rest live in want. Even in highly advanced countries there exist large pockets of abject poverty, malnutrition and preventable diseases. These facts are the inspiration behind a joint effort by the Modesto Peace/Life Center and Project Hope at MHS to address this issue. A group of dedicated students and adults are planning a “Rich Man/Poor Man” Event. The doors will open at 5:30, with a program and dinner at 6:00 PM. The gist of the event is to bring to focus the fact that 10 % of the worlds population eats at a certain privileged level and the “other” 90% subsist at lower level. The event is a dinner in

which 10% of the attendees will be served a gourmet five course dinner which would be reflective of the caloric intake of an individual in the developed world. The rest will receive much less. Included in this event is a video produced by Modesto High students on hunger, both regional and nationally. Student prepared biographical representations of fictitious individuals worldwide that will serve as the basis for the “lottery” that is central to the event. This event is a benefit for several organizations. The Church of the Brethren and their weekly contribution to feeding the homeless, MHS Project Hope and it’s commitment of Haitian relief and the Modesto Peace Life Center youth activities. The price is $10 and it will either be the cheapest gourmet meal that you have ever eaten or a very expensive bowl of beans and rice. What will be priceless is the awareness that participants will receive of the world that is dominated by the Rich Man / Poor Man dichotomy. For tickets and/ or information contact chiavetta.mi@ monet.k12.ca.us Tickets will also be available at the Modesto Church of the Brethren and other area “peace” churches.

Sky West Magazine Loves Modesto We at ModestoView have responded to the Forbes Magazine ranking with our own ranking. ModestoView has ranked Forbes Magazine as the #1 most miserable magazines, based on our statistical analysis of their lack of proper community in person research about the subjects that they write about. Forbes clearly has not taken the time to validate their research. But there are other magazines that do take the time to get to know the communities they serve. Sky West Magazine, the in-flight magazine that is read by over 2.5 million people will be featuring Modesto, USA Home of American Graffiti in their March/April edition. They took the time to check us out, research our history, see what we offer and were so excited about our Graffiti and community heritage that they wanted to tell the world about the city they serve through United Express. It is a great story and will be something that all Modestans and visitors can be proud of. You can find copies in the seat pocket in front of you or at the Modesto Convention and Visitor’s Bureau. Sky West Magazine is placed on more than 1200 daily departures in 121 cities and 43 states and Canada. Wow. Thanks Sky West for showing the real Modesto, USA. Hanging Baskets

MGC bought 175 self watering hanging baskets. (City of Modesto requested they be self watering. The cost to MGC was over $20,000.00) Last year the MGC planted 40 hanging baskets to be placed on J Street and we paid the City of Modesto $4,000.00 to water the baskets from May – November. That’s $100.00 per pot. If the DID cannot come up with the money to water the downtown pots, the cost then would jump tremendously to water the hanging baskets. Time will tell if the MGC will want to hang the baskets.

ModestoView caught up with her before she gets into the very busy spring season as they prepare for their very important fund raising Garden Tour on May 7. Once you read this and see all that the Modesto Garden Club does, you will know why this fund raiser is so very important. This is not a club to join if you want to relax, garden club members deliver serious hours and make a huge contribution to Modesto. Let's get to know Penny. MV: What is the most beautiful garden you have been in? PB: For a very-very large garden I would have to say: Butchart Gardens, Claude Monet’s garden at Giverny or Marie Antoinette’s chateau at Versailles. On a local level, attend the MGC Annual Spring Tour and see: whimsical, historical; outdoor kitchens; water features and country gardens. MV: Are there 3-4 annual flowers that you would recommend? PB: Start thinking Water-Wise plantings. Modesto Garden Club partnered with the City of Modesto this past year and worked with Juan Tejada, Water Conservation Specialist, along with Anne Schellman, Horticulture Consultant. The City put together a 16page magazine, outlining water-wise plants such as nasturtium, black-eye susan, marigolds, cosmos and grasses. MV: Do you have a personal favorite

project the MGC is wworking on? PB: Yes, the annual Modesto Garden Club Spring Garden Tour will be held Saturday, May 7, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. The tour benefits our garden club projects. Visitors will tour eight gardens. Some with outdoor art; outdoor kitchens; water features; a water-wise, small space garden; a Mediterranean fantasy, a country garden complete with a barn and flowers. The proceeds from our garden tour will benefit our community-based garden projects including the Modesto’s Flower Clock, the Courthouse Victims Garden, the Virginia Corridor Rose Garden, and George Lucas Plaza. We also support therapeutic gardening children’s education with garden projects and have 6 horticulture scholarships in the amount of $1,500.00 each. MV: When MGC volunteers go out

to plant are they given a layout or do they create it themselves? PB: We have Vice President’s (6), Directors, and Chair persons who work with the volunteers to create a plan for the project they are working on. MV: How many hours do you spend being MGC President? PB: At least 25 hours per week, if not more. MV: Will you recommend a book or magazine for beginning gardeners? PB: Sunset’s Western Garden Book: has almost every plant, tree, and grasses from A-Z. Garden Gate Magazine: gives you idea for planting groups of flowers. MV: What is your favorite restaurant or meal? PB: A good home cooked meal or BBQ always tastes better with friends around the table. MV: What wonderful nurseries support the MGC? PB: Four Seasons Farms, Frantz Garden Center, Morris Nursery, P&L Concrete & Garden Center, Park Greenhouse, Scenic Nursery, Westurf Nursery and Duarte Nursery. MV: What is your primary source of funding? PB: The MGC Annual Spring Tour on Saturday, May 7, 2011 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tickets are $20.00 and can be purchase at all the nurseries listed on the page 12. MV: What is your favorite flower? PB: I love all of them. My favorite tree is the Redbud. MV: What do you think about the coming Historic CruiseRoute?

PB: This is the first time I’ve been made aware of the project. If it involves flowers and makes the City of Modesto beautiful with color, we are interested. MV: What is your favorite spot and corner in Modesto? PB: Would be the McHenry Mansion and McClatchy Park. MGC spent over $6,000.00 for plant material last year that was used around the home. We had 25 volunteers show up for the planting. City of Modesto asked the MGC if they had some volunteers to prune the roses at McClatchy Park and 8 volunteers showed up to prune over 200 roses. MV: How long is your term of office at the MGC? How long have you been President? PB: President’s term is two years and may be elected for an additional term of two years. In June, I will have been President for four years. MV: How do you join the Garden Club? PB: We love new members. Membership dues are $40 per year. You can join on the tour, or signup at a Garden Club Meeting, second Thursday of the month at the Modesto Senior Citizens Center, 211 Bodem Street (at Scenic Drive). You can visit the club’s web site, www.modestogardenclub.org. I really enjoyed getting to know Penny and am completely amazed at all that the Modesto Garden Club does for Modesto, from the George Lucas Plaza, Arbor Day, workshops, table settings, out of town tours and the six $1500 annual scholarships. We hope you will get to know the garden club too.

Stop Motion Poetry’s focus on songwriting pays off By Ian Hill

In some ways, indie pop bands have it pretty good in the modern music business. There are now more outlets than ever for catchy music, from podcasts and blogs to car advertisement soundtracks. But all those opportunities also present a new challenge for bands hoping to get attention from fans: when there's so much music playing all the time, how do you ensure that your songs stand out? For Modesto's Stop Motion Poetry, the answer lies in a dedication to song writing. "I think the amount of time we spend writing a song shows through and makes the songs have a little bit more longevity," said Clark Beggs, the band's keyboardist and lead singer. "We don't write our songs with an end goal of radio play. We have a really, really, specific vision in our minds of what a good song is and we aim for that. If one of us isn't feeling a tune we either tweak it until we all love it, or we can it." That vision can be heard on Stop Motion Poetry's latest EP, "Jump Right In," released in February, as well as on the infectious piano-driven single “All My Tomorrows.” The video for the single has garnered more than 11,000 views on You Tube and gushing comments from fans like “I can't stop watching this video. It's epic.” “Jump Right In” was produced by Mikal Blue, who also has collaborated with Augustana and Colbie Caillat, among others. Beggs recently answered some questions via email about working with Blue as well as the “All My Tomorrows” video and Stop Motion Poetry’s plans for this month. MV: Stop Motion Poetry's been busy in the last few months. Give me a quick overview of what you've been up to. Clark Beggs: We've been writing a lot. We've done co-writes with Mikal Blue, Andrew Williams (Five

14

For Fighting), Justin Knox (Frank & Derol, Sarah Kelly), and most recently Jeff Cohen (The Spin Doctors, Mat Kearney). We're also playing out a bit more this year and have been playing in the Bay, Sacramento, and LA. Also just released our EP "Jump Right In," it is eight tracks all produced by Mikal Blue and will be available at show and soon iTunes. MV: Let's talk about the EP. What do you hope your fans hear when they give it a listen? CB: We hope fans will hear some tunes that offer the polish of radio tunes but a little more on the indie side as far as melodies and chords, etc. Times are tough and there are some encouraging songs on this EP that hopefully will help folks realize there is always a light at the end of the tunnel. MV: What was it like working with Mikal Blue? How did your band get connected with him? CB: It has been great working with Mikal for the past few years. He's a wizard at Pro Tools and makes recording feel so organic. We quickly forget that

the technology is even there. He really you got to where you are today. helps the band feel comfortable and at CB: We got started a few years back home in the studio. We sent him some as The Evening News and eventually demos a few years back and he saw after several line-up changes it was just potential and has been developing us me so I eventually added my brothers ever since. Devin Beggs on bass and Spencer Beggs MV: The video for "All My on drums. The most recent addition is Tomorrows" is great. What was the Cory Thompson on guitar. We're all video shoot like, and where did the idea really excited about the current line-up for the treatment come from? and all have a joint vision. We also write CB: The shoot was great and kind as band now which is really satisfying. of surprising to us. We showed up and MV: What's next for the band? there was a full staff of more than 20 CB: We've have plans to record people handling every little aspect another four or five songs with Mikal from make-up to set dressing, etc. All Blue and then we're going to start were volunteers from Azusa Pacific putting it out to industry people. We'll University. The actual filming was be playing a lot more around the west pretty intense in a good way, we played coast and we have plans to set out and our song over and over for 12 hours two tour by mid- to late-summer. days in a row. It really helped us get MV: Where can fans next see you more comfortable with performance live, and where can they find out and being in front of a more information about Contact camera. The idea for the Stop Motion Poetry? video is 100 percent CB: Right now from the minds of for April we at Cale Erickson and have shows in ianhillmedia@gmail.com Jesse Doland. Our San Diego, philosophy from Santa Cruz and Follow him on the get go was will likely be Facebook at to trust them in adding some Facebook.com/ianhillmedia in the Bay, as their domain (film) and we kind of gave well as LA. metalview 11 Years of Being Metal By mike vanek & Isaac Ames w/ Photos By Ida Millsaps Www.Facebook.Com/mike.Vanek

Being a promoter is not easy when you put on Metal shows. This month marks 11 years that 209Productions has been around. What started as promoting bands like Immortality, Infestation, Carcinogen, & Bind in high school evolved into 209 Productions. In 2000 just after the birth of my son & death of my dear friend Kane Marin, I started 209 MetalNews with no money in the Turlock Library covering bands like Thr3efold, Differential, Built & Makeshift Grey. Soon I was promoting these bands along with Rubberfinger, Stigmurder and eventually Better Left Unsaid & Nothing But Losers in any space. I've had one friend that has never ever stopped coming around for the last 11+ years and that is Isaac Ames, a local comic that served our country in Iraq. When he came home, one of best & most trusted friends wrote the following about me and I feel compelled to share it with you my readers.

Why Mike Vanek is the reason there’s Metal in Modesto By: Isaac Ames

I first met Mike Vanek when I was homeless in the spring/summer of 2000. It was a different time back then. In 2000 we didn’t have 2 wars, the TSA, Patriot Act, or a half dozen other problems we have today. We had

freedom. We were free to pursue life and follow wherever the road may take us; it was while the road was leading me that my path crossed Mike’s during that fateful time. Mike was working at Chevron at the time, but I remember a personality that was dedicated to one

Mike V shows his tattoos while Mike Allsup of DAM peeks through. thing and one thing only: metal. I’d like to tell you about how much of a fan of metal I am, but that would be a lie. I’ve almost always seen metal and the fans that follow it as those in need; those in need of direction, those in need of humanity, those in need of a shower and deodorant. Yet at the same time as I spent my days working as a sound engineer at The Fat Cat and just going to shows to spend time with people I knew I found one thing about metal that I never noticed before: the community. Here was a community that existed and thrived on nothing but the stale sweat and dedication of its fans. It harvested and garnered support in unlikely places, often remaining a part of the undercurrent that flows not only through this city and state, but throughout the nation. And at the center of it all I find Mike Vanek. Very few things are openly known about Mike Vanek, but they’re there if you look. In between band’s sets he’ll grab the mic, announce the artists, and say, “Call your friends, call your neighbor, call the people you owe money and tell them to get to this show!” His signature speech at his shows is distinct and defines his view of what the metal community should be doing when it comes to the scene. No excuses, no hesitation, no shame: metal. His upbringing has been plagued with stop-motion scenes of horror. On June 18, 2004 a house fire took his mother from him. This particular aspect of his life has always had a profound resonance within me as my own mother passed away in August a few months later. He endured and continued on his course. In Modesto there’s tribute show after tribute show to icons in music; he’s had a concert on her birthday annually as tribute to his mother.

And it was at this tribute that I first stepped on stage as a comedian. I’d never been to an open mic, never written a joke; it was an idea that I’d voiced to him in passing. But in 2008 as I was standing in the back supporting my friend and remembering my mother as well he came to me and asked, “Do you want to get up and tell some jokes?” I said, “Sure.” The next thing I knew I was finding that the journey I was beginning was going to be a long one since I bombed horribly that night, luckily there was metal to pick up where I left off. And so it’s been for Mike Vanek; taking it all in one day/ show/band at a time. I’ve learned a lot about Mike Vanek and in the past 10+ years as his friend, but even more about metal. Metal isn’t just the unwashed masses pointlessly raging against the machine; it’s more than a simple stand against the status quo and everything superficially mainstream. So what is Metal? Metal is staying true to your roots and defining who you are as a person. Metal is developing your character and committing who you are to yourself. Metal is standing against a rising tide and never giving ground. Metal is knowing that you’re a cog in the machine but you get to pick your place of operation. Metal is love for a good mother. Metal is someone to take home at the end of the night. Metal is community and camaraderie. Metal is knowing that you’re always from the street and that if you want anything in this world you’ve got to go get it yourself. Metal is one of the last real things in our society. Metal is Mike Vanek. But I know, without Mike Vanek, there’d be no Metal in Modesto.

60 YEARS OF TRADITION AT THE OAKDALE RODEO By Greg Cobb

For 60 years, the Oakdale Rodeo has been a destination for some of the most famous cowboys in the world. Fans from everywhere have enjoyed some of the greatest exhibitions of athleticism and determination put on by the best of the best in the sport of rodeo. Not only are the cowboys athletic, the livestock is amazingly fit and well prepared for a battle between man and beast. The rodeo experience is a test of both brains and brawn and has brought great pride to the City of Oakdale for 6 decades. Known as the Cowboy Capitol of the World, Oakdale is home to some of the finest in the sport. Names like Jerold Camarillo, Leo Camarillo, Ace Berry, Jim Charles, Harley May, Ted Nuce and Sonny Tureman have served up spectacular performances over the years and have their share of buckles and championships. These are the

legends. This year, another Oakdale star is sure to surface and bring even more recognition to this tradition of Oakdale cowboy stardom. It may be bull rider Bo Bacigalupi. Possibly, team ropers Lance Harvey, Lane Murray, Tyler Quiring or Joe Shawnego could raise a few brows. Maybe even one of the guys going after the all around like Danny Leslie for steer wrestling and team roping, or Troy Murray competing in calf roping and team roping. It’s a proud tradition and as other things change, one thing stays the same; rodeo is a tradition in the Cowboy Capitol. The 60th Oakdale Rodeo kicks off on Saturday April 9th with the ever popular Oakdale Rodeo Parade beginning at 9am. Grand entry of the rodeo takes place both Saturday and Sunday at 1:30pm and this year will

It’s been a rough couple of years for the private golf country club industry it seems, except Oakdale Golf and Country Club. In a time when everyone’s hard earned dollars being spent are looked at carefully and the fact that it’s not so chic to belong to a “Country Club” anymore, it’s remarkable that Oakdale Golf and Country Club is busier now than ever. According to Jim Kass, National Golf Foundation’s research director, “NGF tracked 46 18-hole equivalent golf course openings in 2010 vs. 107 closures, for a net negative of 61, the fifth consecutive year that closures have outpaced openings,” with more than 60 percent of the openings being publicfee courses. In speaking with Rick Schultz, the General Manager of OGCC, he stated that over the past four years revenues for the club are up 27% with most of that coming from an increase in Food and Beverage sales. He also stated that with only 13% of all private country clubs having a full membership, he’s very proud to report that OGCC was part of that 13%. He also said the fact that membership prices were down to $4,000, from a high of $17,500 in the mid 90’s, in his opinion was a huge opportunity for the younger families to be able to join a private country club and if there was ever a time to join a private club, now was that time! If you’re unsure of whether a long term commitment is right for you, you may even try a one year lease to give you a sample of what it’s like to be a member before purchasing. “Making Oakdale Golf and Country Club into a social club as much as a golf club has been my main goal since I got here four years ago. I tried to bring

the families back to the club by adding social events that included children and to bring back a fine dining experience that was second to none. My goal is to create an event every day that will be attractive to different sectors of the membership and to make OGCC the center of their social calendar. One of the best events we do currently is our monthly free concert series for our members and their guests called, Friday Night Live. During the summer months we have anywhere from 300 to 600 people come out for our FNL’s with the most popular ones being our Car Show, Farmer’s Market and July 4th events.” said Rick Schultz. From all of what I have heard and seen being around the club for a few days, it appears he has accomplished all of those goals! What really appears to separate Oakdale from the other clubs in the Central Valley is that their dues are so much less than the other private clubs. For only $334 a month, the entire family, including children 22 and under, can play all the golf they want, hit all the range balls they can and have unlimited use of one golf cart; there just isn’t a better deal around. One day on the course for a family of four would easily be worth the monthly dues. And when you add in their golf clinics, discounted merchandise, member tournaments and their extensive social calendar, it’s no wonder why Oakdale Golf and Country Club is doing so well in these troubled times! To find out more about memberships and all that happens at Oakdale Golf and Country Club, visit their website, www.oakdalegcc.org, or call their General Manager, Rick Schultz, (209) 847-2984.

What’s Growin’ on! By Wayne Zipser and Tom Orvis

Stanislaus County agriculture comes alive in April with almost all perennial crops coming out of winter and spring dormancy. Grapes usually are one of the last to emerge with the green tissue you see bust out and grow with vigor. Soon you will see forage crops being harvested and you can tell by seeing big choppers blowing chopped material into a truck traveling along side. Most of this will be going to dairy animals for feed. This is the first sign of what will be a long harvest season with our 250 different crops grown in Stanislaus County through the end of November. The almond crop at this point looks very strong. However with late spring rains, you might see growers out spraying their fields with fungicides to protect the almonds and the leaves from disease. A disease at this stage of growth may make the tree weak. A weakened tree may abort the nuts, leading to a much smaller crop set along with leaving the tree open to more problems for the following summer. This then makes the almond tree susceptible to

other pests such as Spider Mites, Navel Orange Worm and Peach Twig Borer. These trees are made to produce nuts. A tree without nuts becomes nothing more than a large shade tree that still costs money to protect. The walnut crop is still too early to see what it might bear at this point. You might see walnut growers doing the same as almond growers at this point fighting disease and pest problems. Peaches have bloomed with their pink blossoms and cherries will have their white blossoms. Cherries are one of the fastest growing fruit from bloom to harvest. Most of California will be harvesting in May. Cherry growers want a dry time leading up to harvest because rains during the growth stage lead to “split pits.” While the quality is still good, the cosmetic appearance is not how the consumer envisions a cherry. Therefore, buyers and exporters pay far less for a perfectly good piece of fruit. Now for a little water talk. While many of our dams in the Sierra provide

for irrigation, their greatest purpose is flood control. Imagine Modesto without Don Pedro Dam right now – parts would probably be under water! In late March, the inflow was nearly 28,000 CFS (cubic feet per second) – over four times greater than we currently see in the Tuolumne River under the Highway 99 bridge! All that snow and rain water must go somewhere and that somewhere is DOWN the river and out into the Delta and eventually under the Golden Gate. And that was just one day! Remember 1997 and the results of the “Pineapple Express?” And that was with Don Pedro Dam in place! With storm upon storm lashing the valley and mountains, this could be a continual problem that we don’t have to deal with thanks to the foresight of farmers at the beginning of the 20th Century! When you think about it dams provide the public with a long list of advantages. During the winter months, Don Pedro provides flood protection to all of the people and homes along the Tuolumne River. Throughout the year, water from Don Pedro is put into the Modesto Reservoir where is it purified and sent to Modesto as drinking water. Tuolumne River water also nurtures and provides habitat for

multiple species of fish, mammals and aquatic life throughout the river basin. When you turn your lights on, let’s not forget Don Pedro and the cheapest form of renewable energy available to the consumer – falling water – hydropower! And last but not least, all of the crops we talk about from month to month are irrigated from the canals that crisscross Stanislaus County. So, Don Pedro water also leads to food production that is grown locally and consumed around the world. Water leads to jobs and that multiplier effect that agriculture has on the community. $2.5 Billion in farm gate revenue leads to nearly $11 Billion in our local economy. Thanks for reading and we look forward to next month! Remember to support your local farmers and the products grown here because farmers feed families! It really does make a difference in your daily life! Stanislaus County Agriculture! See It! Feel It! Taste It!

outdoorView Caswell Memorial State Park By Kyle Montero

By Efren Martinez

Sitting in a break room in March, I found myself sitting next to a lady eating her lean microwave meal that guarantees here that she will lose weight if she sticks to these meals by her weight club she joined. After microwaving it, I notice her practically eating the cardboard box that the meal was in. Seems some of her meal microwaved into hard food that stuck to the microwave-able box. I looked at her and she said, “damn it! I’m entitled to every single bite of this food in my weight loss program and I’m not letting any of it go to waste”. Friends, there is truly a better way. Let me introduce you to Beth Haley. Back in April of 2010 she started her quest in a new healthier lifestyle and has

lost over 60lbs. What lead me to Beth is that one day I overheard her say, I feel great and I love my trainer Bridget who is a Pilates fitness instructor at Modesto Racquet Club. I’m so proud of Beth, she has stuck to her plan and has lost the weight in a safe and healthy way. She started out with a nutrition program and incorporated the benefits of using a personal trainer with various exercises as well as Pilates. Pilates does work friends, I am living proof of that too. As many of you know, I once weighed in at over 300lbs in 12/04 and by 7/05 I got down to 156lbs., although the success wasn’t just in Pilates. For Beth and me, it was all about counting calories, exercising, and eating smart foods. Smart food would

www.facebook.com/ newparts I can’t count all of the times that someone tried to explain to me that there was nothing fun to do in Modesto. These conversations usually also include a long speech about admission prices to local events and how they are “outrageous.” That my friends is not always the case. There is a long growing list of events scheduled in Modesto in April and many are free or low-cost. If you are a fan of Americana and want to show your children a great example of American pride and community spirit, take them out to the ballpark. Tickets to see the Modesto Nuts play start at just six bucks. Skip Starbucks for a day, grab a glove and head on out to see a dancing peanut and some killer baseball action. This is less expensive

than a movie. You can’t go wrong. If you have been watching the news and seeing the destruction caused by events such as the earthquakes in Japan, show a little love for Mother Nature. Cruise over to the Great Valley Museum on April 9th and enjoy a free open house and native plant sale. You will be able to purchase plants while supporting a variety of MJC programs. Ask about workshops while you are there. The museum has special programs for folks of all ages. Many are free. Some require a small payment. If you want to go one step further in showing support for Mother Nature, pack up the VW bus and break out the tie dye for a trip to Graceada Park on April 16th. The annual Earth Day in the Park celebration is a great chance

to check out and support local vendors and learn how to reduce your carbon footprint. Recycling is important. Learn how to do it right. Art buffs will enjoy the Third Thursday Artwalk that is scheduled for April, 21st. This is a great chance to see what Modesto has to offer in the way of arts and is also a free event. This is the eighth year that this event has occurred every month and it has really opened up the art community to the public. Stop by the Modesto Convention and Visitors Bureau at 9th and Lst for a map. This is really a fun adventure. Many businesses offer drinks and snacks along the way and you will have a chance to experience places that you might have never noticed before.

Another popular free event in April every year is the Intertribal Pow-Wow at MJC’s East Campus. This will take place this year on April, 17th. Take a camera and a sense of adventure to this event. The focus of the event is to showcase Native American art and culture. Dancers, artists and vendors will be on hand for this event that is celebrating its 13th year. If the weather fails to cooperate or if a rain dance works exceptionally well, the event will be moved over to the Mary Stuart Rogers Student Learning Center on MJC’s West Campus. See our events calendar in this issue for more information on upcoming events or head over to our site at www. modestoview.com.

DMC continued from page 22 Other Foundation programs include our Diabetes Community Services program, which recently screened and educated every 5th through 8th grader in the county; Miller's Place, which improves the lives of dependant adults struggling with Alzheimer's or dementia and physical disabilities; Lifeline Personal Response System and the newest program in our line of services, the RSVP program. The Foundation was recently awarded a three-year grant from the federal Corporation for National Community Service to assist individuals greater than 55 years of age under the RSVP (Retired Senior Volunteer Program) program. The funding available will be used to create a volunteer pool of seniors who want to make a difference in our community through peer counseling and transportation services. Volunteers providing transportation are eligible for mileage reimbursement through the RSVP program. We give back to residents of this community in various ways. Each year, we offer health education scholarships to a handful of students interested in pursuing a career in health care. This funding, administered by DMC

include good carbs such as fruit and pasta. Yes, pasta! But wait. It needs to be wheat pasta and always go with whole grain whenever possible. Being a triathlete, I need my smart carbs to get me through those 3.5 hour training days. But, if you’re into the caveman diet and it’s working for you, cool. I would prefer not to go back quite as far as the caveman but rather to biblical times with what they where eating back then. After all, you all have read in your history books of the longevity of the average caveman right. Smiles. Perhaps they would have had a longer life span if they had eaten their carbs for energy food instead of running out of energy from being chased by a T-Rex and becoming their food. Just remember, if it grew from mother earth, chances are it has a nutritional value or even a medicinal purpose. And NO! Sorry to disappoint our Purple Haze friends out there. Marijuana Brownies are not smart food! Friends, if this is still very confusing to you. I invite you to do what I did.

Foundation and provided by local medical professionals, is one of the simple ways in which we demonstrate our support for quality health education. We also have an ongoing partnership with Golden Valley Health Centers and the Stanislaus Children and Families Commission. Through this partnership, we run the M.O.M.obile, a mobile health clinic, which offers medical exams and treatment to the under served areas of the community. Last year, we had nearly 5,000 visits to our Medical Outreach Mobile (M.O.M.) All of our programs have competent and caring staff, equipped to serve Spanish-speaking clients. We strive to meet the growing needs of many residents in Stanislaus County. With demand for our services increasing coupled with reductions in state funding, DMC Foundation and other non-profit organizations need your support. On April 28, we will host Culinary Clash IV. This special event features a chef competition, delicious food and wine from local restaurants and wineries and prizes. For tickets to this fund raising event or to learn more about the programs we offer, call 209-527-3412 or go to www.dmcf.org.

Pick up a book on nutrition and study it. You will find the bottom line is simple. If it’s fattening, don’t consume it and don’t include it on your grocery list. Instead look for healthy alternatives. The biggest well-known secret to losing weight is 70 to 80% is smart nutrition and the rest is exercise. But please, always consult your doctor before you start any kind of exercise program. Walking would be a good start for many of us and on April 30th at Downey Park, the Modesto Walk MS will take place. Contact Katie Walsh 1-800-3444867 for more info. Also, The BAC Health Fair happens on the same day at The Modesto Fitness and Racquet Club with free testing for diabetes, blood pressure and other need to know health issues. More info Contact Lisa Braken at 571-2582 and, A reminder for Beth and others that have walked in our shoes.
