EDITOR’S Chris singing along with a street Elvis on Honky Tonk Row in Nashville. 10th St in Modesto could be an exciting place like this with music history art, the Historic Cruise Route and a walk back in time.

CONTENTS The Reverend Horton Heat, Jim Heath sat down with ModestoView to talk about Rockabilly and took time to catch up reading ModestoView

Greetings

Here comes the sun! It is that time of year when the colors are exploding all over, the events are blasting off and there are seriously not enough hours in the day. It is spring everything. Spring Cleaning, Spring Break, Spring Training, the Famers Market is springing up on the weekend and we already sprang forward into the new daylight savings time so the evenings are longer, the nights are warmer and there the outdoor patios are the place to eat, whether at your favorite local restaurant or at your own home. When you look at the amazing ModestoView calendar you will see that there are more things to do each week that you can possibly squeeze in. Fundraisers, relays, walks, films, gourmet tastings, wine and cheeses and good old fashioned car washes. The college acceptance letters have been rolling in and finals and IB tests are coming soon. My how time flies. Seems like it was just yesterday the kids were at Lakewood School and you could actually help your kids with math. Isn’t it nice that there are so many things to do here in the Greater Modesto area? You can see the new generation in action in our interview with city council member and local business owner Stephanie Burnside and see and hear the talent in our community with our Kickstarter article featuring awesome local bands and their community accomplishment. It is with this in mind where we look back to our history to build the strengths of our future. So many things in town take us back to our history, a history that is rich in adventure and significance. I have been asking people, True or False Modesto is the birthplace of Rock and Roll? You would be surprised the many answers I get, to the head scratching to the incredulous could it be true? Yes. It is true and we will tell you our amazing musical rock and roll music history over the nest few months. What do you think the Forbes people will say when they finally learn that some of the most important music history events happened here in Modesto USA? Yes there are surprises around each corner, and interesting things for people of all ages here in our city. ModestoView is proud to be a sponsor of the Modesto Certified Farmers Market, the Thursday Night Ramble, the Music in the Plaza series and many other things that make our community interesting. ModestoView is right there in the middle, helping create the events and the things in our city that make a difference. That is what makes us different. We are the change we need to be the city we want to be. Our writers are the people that create the events and our advertisers are the businesses that make our city vibrant. Best of all, our readers are the best people in town as you are the ones that tell the world that we are a great place to live and celebrate the things that make us different. Thank you all so very much. Have a great April. April 2013 By ModestoFamous/Ruben Porras Oh life! March was quite the ride for me! My life in this community seems to just get better and better and that is something that I’m really excited about. Things in my life don’t always stay good. For some crazy reason, the good always turns bad or worse. I won’t let that happen with my life here. I’m just too happy. Happy is good! My work with local businesses really kicked into high gear in March and it seems like I am getting busier and busier in that regard and I am enjoying it. My doctors like when I stay busy but still manage to get what I call my “old man naps” in. My body and I don’t always agree on the projects that take me late into the night but I’m still here and reasonably healthy so I am learning to find a balance. Some of my best moments last month were the moments that I spent with celebrities. Not everyone would agree with my definition of celebrity, but that is ok. A celebrity to me is someone that makes themselves known for the work they do in their field. I’ve been called a local celebrity. That’s always nice to hear. Somehow last month I managed to get in front of Boz Scaggs, Kenny Rogers, a couple famous DJs and a few country stars that were big in the 90s when I was in high school. I’ve met many famous folks in my life but I never really get starstruck. That just changed - Meeting Kenny Rogers put me at a loss for words. He was genuine, humble and polite and that was nice to see. I’ll never forget his show or the handshake that we shared. The man is a true icon. April won’t be as crazy as March but that is just fine with me. I could use a bit of a breather I suppose. My beautiful partner in crime and I have joined a gym and have decided to get fit together. Apparently she is mildly insane and wants to grow old with me. She wants to watch me age and take care of me. That works for me. She inspires me and cooks like Wolfgang Puck. I’m pretty sure that going back to a single guy’s diet of ramen and Oreo cookies might be a bad idea. She won’t allow that. Enjoy your April. Party like a rockstar. Take

in a drag show at ClimaX on 7th Street, watch a rapper shake the walls at Fat Cat or close your eyes and get lost in a Modesto Symphony performance at the Gallo Center for the Arts. Take a look at our event calendar and you will realize that Modesto serves up something for everyone. One more thing — As if I wasn’t busy enough, I have decided to publish a book of local street images. The photos that accompany this column are a couple that I have taken recently. They are not perfect. They would not make it onto the walls of famous galleries. That is not the the point. They tell a story about beautiful people doing regular things in the place that I call home. I’m

not trying to get rich and sell a million copies. I will donate most of the book profits to help those in need. Have a great month in April. Walk the local trails, sit on the patio of a local restaurant, walk hand-in-hand with someone special. That is life. Life is good! ART M

April Showers By Jim Christiansen The April Showers flood of local art events rushes in the first weekend with the Preview Show for 2013 Stanislaus Artist Open Studio Tour, Thursday April 4 at Gallo Center. The preview is FREE, with a chance to see one example from each of the 57 artists on the tour, buy a map, and plenty of time to check out the other local galleries, Chartreuse Muse, Mistlin Gallery, Building Imagination Center, Gallery 909 and enjoy lunch, or coffee, or Mrs. Beckle’s candy within a block’s walk downtown. Maps are $10 for the two day April 6 and 7 weekend event, available at the galleries, and Oakdale Chamber of Commerce, Modesto Convention and Visitors Bureau, Carnegie Arts Center and First Street Frame Shop in Turlock. The 35 studio stops are spread around the county, primarily in Modesto, but with stops in Riverbank and Escalon and Del Rio, with sizeable contingents in Turlock and Oakdale. Hours for the preview show and Open Studio weekend, 10 am to 6 pm. When you get a map, look on the back for the Raffle entry form to win one of the five Purchase Prize Award winning original art pieces to be given away. Just fill it out, and drop in one of the raffle ticket collection boxes. Art is available to purchase at all the stops, and artists will include demonstrations along the route. The two day event features visual artists in painting, ceramics, sculpture, metal and wood work, art jewelry, mixed media, printmaking, photography and digital art. Students 18 and under admitted FREE, and groups encouraged. Modesto View is one of the advertiser sponsors for the event. That same weekend, the West Side of the County visual artists will be on display at the Patterson Repertory Theater Art and Wine Gala. The art show and wine drinking supporting the theater company is now in its ninth year, and for the second year coincides with the first night of the Open Studio Tour. Contact the City of Patterson for Art Show entry guidelines and deadlines. Gala Tickets are $25 in advance, $30 at the door, and couples $45. Gala takes place at

Mistlin Gallery is open Tuesday through Friday 11:30 to 5, and noon to four on Saturdays. Carnegie Arts Center Spring Show entries Award winning landscape by Barbara are due April 9. Look up the Turlock group Gill Salerno for their free lectures and upcoming shows. Keep the date, July 27, for “The Romance of Old Habana/ Havana Focus Exhibit” gala at Martin G. Petersen auditorium on H Street. Photographers David Schroeder and Jon Souza show is focus on Cuba, and the gala benefit event July 27 for Mistlin Gallery, features Cuban Food, Cuban rum, cigars, music, dancing, and more. BAR M

Thursday Night A.A.: Art and Alcohol

By Kate Serpa Photos by Philip Johnson

I

normally do not attend Modesto Art Walk because it requires me to be outside, and outside is my least favorite place to be (aside from the gym). However, I have been attempting to get more involved in Modesto downtown activities that do not exclusively revolve around alcohol. I am hoping this sudden not-fully-sloshed active interest in the local community will help give me a leg-up in the upcoming Miss America race, because I look damn good in a satin sash. For those of you who are unawares, downtown Modesto hosts a local art walk on the third Thursday of the month from 5-9 p.m. This year-round event features a bevy of local artists’ work showcased in local downtown venues. Handy-dandy Art Walk maps are available at a number of locations downtown for your convenience. Also, this event is always free of charge (which means more money for the bar!). So one unnaturally windy Thursday night, Phil and I ventured to my least favorite place (outside) to try and culture our uncultured selves. The results were surprisingly fun:

Then, Phil and I headed over to…. Third Stop- Tresetti’s World Caffe for Patio Pitchers & Greg Stephens

First Stop- Deva Café for the Ramble & Lorena & Jamie Loftis Okay, so Deva is not listed on the Art Walk map, but it is for sure an excellent first stop. Not only were Phil and I able to grab a tasty sandwich, I was able to also get in my first ‘personality drink’ (big glass of Dustbowl) before further interacting with the general public. Most importantly, Deva is an excellent first stop because every week from 7:30-10:30 they throw the Thursday Night Ramble (it’s on Thursday, just in case it’s unclear). Thursday Night Ramble features a consistently appealing line-up of local and regionally adjacent musicians (a few of whom I happen to know-- not that it’s a big deal or anything) who do most excellent live music. So between the sandwiches, local art, local/regionally adjacent music, and the BEER, I vote Deva a must-stop for any Thursday night happenings. 1202 J St., Modesto/572.3382

8

Second Stop- Barkin’ Dog Grill for Music & Kevin Durst Barkin’ Dog Grill is the very first stop on the Art Walk map list; and it is with just cause. They have featured local art, they have live music by David Dow & the Open Jam on Thursdays, they have beer, they have wine, they have an avocado bacon cheeseburger which may cause you to reexamine your life, and best yet-- Barkin’ Dog is right in the center of the Art Walk. A Drop Top and Gordon Biersch later (both for me, of course-- I don’t share 940 11th St., Modesto/572.2341

Like I need another reason to go to Tresetti’s! Now they’re doing these fantastic things called Patio Pitchers that involve alcohol and seasonal fruit served in a sizeable pitcher that is meant to be shared and not wholly consumed all by your lonesome. Tresetti’s is the perfect end to your Art Walk adventures because a) it’s right across the street from Barkin’ Dog so you can visit the surrounding galleries and drink with the confidence that you know your way back, b) the combination of Tresetti’s patio + their Patio Pitchers makes for an ideal after-Art Walk-meet-up spot, c) maybe you just saw too much incredible art over the course of one evening and your brain needs a pitchers-worth of mental detox in order to process it all. Tresetti’s, Greg, and a pitcher of Tangerine Dream (the flavor of the week) will take excellent care of you. 927 11th St., Modesto/572.2990

Mind you, I only included establishments who serve the sweet nectar; be sure to grab an Art Walk map for a complete list of local participants. ModestoView Magazine is a proud supporter of both the Ramble and the Modesto Art Walk. SEE-- We are good people! Extra Credit Miss America points? …. please? I need all the help I can get. Redwood Café Revealed

A

nyone that knows me, knows I’m not easily impressed. It’s rare that I will walk into a restaurant and instantly feel transported through a magical portal like in Alice in Wonderland! From the street side of the Redwood Café you will see a quaint little restaurant with trellises of romantic hanging green leafy vines and warm wood siding. I entered from the back side gate that opened to sprawling grass grounds, leading to a white painted gazebo that has a sweet southern charm. “Romantic” was the very first word that arrived in my thoughts. My eyes began to gaze about the property and wedding bells sounded off in my head. No! Not for me silly! But definitely for all those in love in search of the perfect local romantic setting to tie the knot! So maybe you aren’t looking for a stellar backdrop to entertain an amazing event, but you’d enjoy a gorgeous setting to dine at while you delight your palate. The Redwood Café (RC) was once a mere construction site for owner Bob Campana 18 years ago. Bob purchased the property from The Knights of Columbus that came with a catering license. For the first 10-12 years this was a catering operation that blossomed into a full bar and upscale restaurant that will captivate many of your senses. Bob lives in Modesto on a lil’ farm with animals, gardens, and a small vineyard, but he doesn’t work at the restaurant. He loves to dine there! After running his pool and plumbing business he can be found dining on a NY strip steak. Bob is known for generously donating back into the Modesto community via numerous organizations like St. Joseph’s Church, St. Stanislaus, central Catholic, Camp Taylor, and regularly hosts on-site fundraisers including the Humane Society. Lorna Borges has been the general manager at RC for the past 10 years. I asked her what

10

it feels like to walk through the door there 5-7 days a week; she said it’s where her career belongs as it’s never dull. Her passion sparked in her voice when she talked about working with public, especially the brides. She described her pure satisfaction where she is instrumental in a bride’s wedding vision becoming a reality. Lorna also oversees the restaurant, the energetic staff, and steady volume of pleased customers. She is a health nut and loves the RC vegan burger. Nick Richars, wine steward, runs the fine wine program. Yes, over 200 wines to choose from! How do we decide? Just ask Nick! He has worked restaurants and been in the arena for 8 years. He has an impressive knowledge of wine and is there to ensure guests are going to indulge in a magnificent pairing from their plate to their glass. The notable factor with Nick is this, he will effortlessly make you feel comfortable when you are looking for a wine to compliment your meal whether it is lunch, dinner, dessert, or perhaps one of the tasty tapas from the small plate menu. Executive Chef Ryan Breshears of Modesto has been on board since Dec 2012. Chef Ryan is a burger buff like me, but it he can bring it to the table as he spoiled me with Lollipop Lamb with a soft polenta and a balsamic glaze, a mouth melting pork chop with apple-mango chutney, sautéed garlic spinach, and gorgonzola creamy polenta. I finished with a dessert sampler trio of

tiramisu, lemon-coconut cream pie, and apple pie! ALL Dana~licious and highly recommended! What a fantastic dining experience at RC! Dine in rich character of the inside restaurant, the cozy patio, or in the wine cellar. A definite repeater here! As a bonus I met patrons at the table next to me, Sally and Kenly Mitchell, and Carmen Bedoy. Not only do they love the Redwood Café, they appreciate and regularly enjoy exploring Modesto guided by the Modesto View! What a wonderful compliment! Thank you! “Opening Day”

By Ken White

Opening Day always meant the end of winter and the beginning of summer. (Although it was really spring.) The last of the season I hated and the first of the season I loved. Every true baseball fan couldn’t wait for that special day. We’d all been marking off our calendars since the last pitch of last year’s World Series. On Opening Day, we could live and breathe and hope again. On Opening Day, every team was in the race. Everyone was a contender. As the first official franchise in Major League Baseball history, the Cincinnati Reds always got to be the first team to play on Opening Day. They held the “opening of the Openers.” It was said that the citizens of the “Queen City” looked upon Opening Day as “one small notch below Christmas.” Since baseball was, after all, the national pastime, Opening Day always seemed to attract politicians anxious to show the American people they were one of them, had the right stuff, and could wing a fast ball up there with the best of them. President William Howard Taft, who was a big fan – in size and enthusiasm – was the first president to throw out the first pitch way back on April 14th, 1910. In 1950, Harry S. Truman, who happened to be ambidextrous, threw out balls both right-handed and left-handed. On April 9th, 1962, President John F. Kennedy continued the tradition by throwing out the first pitch at Washington’s new District of Columbia Stadium. Early Wynn, a Hall of Fame pitcher who played his entire career in the American League for the Senators, Indians, and White Sox, once said about Opening Day, “An opener is not like any other game. There’s that little extra excitement, a faster beating of the heart. You have that anxiety to get off to a good start, for yourself and for the team. You know that when you win the first one, you can’t lose ‘em all.” I liked his name and his optimism. In 1962, Opening Day for the New York Yankees took place on April 10th against the Baltimore Orioles at Yankee Stadium. Mrs. Claire Ruth, The Babe’s widow, threw out the first pitch. My team, the Giants,

would be opening against the Milwaukee Braves at Candlestick Park on Candlestick Point in San Francisco later that day. The Yankees would almost be done by then. And I’d be listening to my heroes on my transistor radio tuned to KBEE 970-AM. I had never attended any Opening Day games because it was too expensive and my dad couldn’t afford to take the day off. Plus, there were five of us kids, so he would have to decide who to take since he didn’t have enough money to take us all. That was a “no-win” situation. But, there were many other “Opening Days” that I did attend with my father. The Opening Day of each Little League and Babe Ruth season. And that’s because my dad was my coach for just about all the teams I played for while attending elementary school, junior high, and high school. To young boys, Coaches were Gods, mentors, teachers, and role models. If you were lucky, like me, that man was your father. In my experience, there were two kinds of coaches. Those who were quiet and led by example and those who yelled and tried to browbeat you into being better. I preferred the former, which was the kind of coach my dad was. I never responded to the coach who screamed red-faced at his players. I re-

member reading that Mickey Mantle hated Casey Stengel because the “Old Perfessor” was always riding him, which is what Mantle’s father had done to him all his life. Mantle said they were never satisfied. But, that didn’t stop him from trying to please them. From our Coaches, we learned about baseball and we learned about life. We learned about preparation, attitude, and teamwork. We learned that talent is as much a result of practice and dedication as natural ability or instincts. We learned about being confident versus being cocky. About being gracious in victory, as well as defeat. About knowing before each play what you were going to do. And about backing up; the play and your teammates. We learned about taking something away from each win and loss, and then putting it all behind you. We also learned about mastering the mechanics of the game. About physical and mental conditioning. We learned about the history and tradition of the game. And about never giving up. On a game, on your teammate, on yourself. In baseball and in life, I tried to please my dad, but not because he expected or demanded it. But, because he won it. Quietly. “On Opening Day, the world is all future. There is no past.” – Lou Boudreau, American League Player and Manager Excerpted from a forthcoming young adult novel entitled “Getaway Day,” which revolves around the October day the New York Yankees and San Francisco Giants traveled to Modesto to practice during the rain-delayed 1962 World Series.

Happy April Everone!

By Abbey Murphy

Happy April Everyone! Hope everyone is feeling the spring spirit as the weather has warmed up and the flowers have popped up, too! This is such a great time of the year and for all students in Modesto, we are counting every single day until school’s out for summer! Many of us have plans for the summer and often try to get through these spring months as quickly as possible until we have school off, but there is so much to do at this time and we should take advantage of our amazing city. Okay, so many of you may remember that I am the president of a club at Modesto High Girl Scouts volunteer at Modesto Marathon School called Project Hope! We have had our Battle of the Bands Concert on April many great fundraisers and events to raise 19th! This night features the amazing Josh funds to build medical centers and schools Rosenblum Band, High Voltage and other around the world. This year, it is our goal to local bands that will compete to win the build a school in Ghana, Africa! To reach hearts of the audience and earn the title of our goal, we are going to be putting on champion for the night! It is a great way to

hear new bands, it’s cheaper than going to see a movie, AND all the proceeds go to a great cause, so come by and check it out, April 19th at Modesto High. We just saw with the Modesto Marathon in March that people of all ages and sizes can get out and be active! Set a goal for yourself and get trained to run the half marathon (or even the marathon!) for next year. Bring a buddy and hit the running trails to get healthy and enjoy the beauty of our city today! Spring is full of life and opportunity and make sure to take advantage of it while we can because soon enough it will be too hot to even enjoy the outdoors. Remember to stay focused to finish out the school year and get planning for summer!

know we have got to think globally and act locally but sometimes you just gots to get out of town. So I caught José Feliciano, one of my mentors and inspirations for the music at Yoshi’s Japanese Restaurant and music venue on March 8th in Oakland. It is so invigorating that José, who at 17 tore it up on American Bandstand and today at 68 yrs young, is still playing and singing with such intensity that his young band members have to keep up. Yes he has a few gray hairs but he still sings like a bird and plays guitar with Flamenco fire. As a seasoned player he plays with such dynamics and ease with different tempos, styles from Latin, Jazz, pop, rancheros to Bolero that is inspiring that some of us just don’t get older but better. At the end of the set I wished he would have played that Beatle’s tune or that song from that album that he did so well, but I realized if he played everything that I grew up listening to we would have been there a week! Long live José, older but he ain’t slowin down yet. So now back in town and enjoying our local scene, the Third Thursday Art Walk. I’ve put my winter coat away and back in my Hawaiian shirts and shorts. I know that spring just sprung but I’m suspending disbelief until summer. And with the change in latitude and my attitude the Art Walk is back in bloom. In March Papachino’s on J had two young women playing violin, Deva Café had the Thursday night ramble with some great music, Barkin’ Dog Grill had Dave Dow’s Jazz Jam session with some great players sittin’ in with even a Tuba player playing bass lines. The Peer Recovery had a room full of Thursday night revelers enjoying the art and hors d’oeuvres.

Eli and Big Earl – by Threelle Productions There were many people in the downtown enjoying a nice still spring night out. More bright moments in store for the month. The State Theatre continues with quality musical offerings. Coming April 12th Ozomatli. We are also excited that our local bands are doing things at the State! So come on down and support the State, check out www.thestate.org. The Gallo Center continues with some quality shows, in April: West Side Story, (Broadway review), Music of Mozart, (Modesto Symphony Orchestra, and Cappella Palooza). West Side Theatre in Newman for April brings in Daniel Castro, regional Blues guitar slinger and singer Sat 20th, Kelly McDonald, seasoned guitarist singer playing originals and covers. If you love the Blues and love to dance don’t miss Daniel, great singer and guitarist with no relation to Tommy Castro. For the info: www.westsidetheatre. org. Reg Evans of Central Valley Music Group continues to promote a showcase of local bands at the Clarion on Friday nights. Saturday nights a DJ spins Soul music for listening and dancing. Tuesday offers Salsa

with DJ and Wednesdays with Dixieland with the Creole Jazz Kings at 6:00 p.m. And as the ebb tide of all things happen we suddenly have a jam-session extravaganza in the downtown: Barkin’ Dog Grill has Dave Dow, Jazz pianist hosting the Thursday night jam from 7 to 10:00 p.m., all ages, Hero’s Sports Bar hosts a Jazz and popular music jam with Ian Stambaugh Trio featuring Johnny Valdes on guitar Tuesday nights 7-10:00 p.m., and Wednesdays has rotating Blues Bands hosting an invitational jam from 7-10:00 p.m., wow! So come down and sit in, stand in, or just lay down. And the Jazz Vespers series at the Unitarian Church on 16th Street April 14th, features Joe Mazzaferro Quartet, Joe is director of CSU Stanislaus of Jazz studies. And Jamie Dubberly, trombone player involved with the Vespers project is doing a kickstarter campaign for his new Latin-Jazz album so check out: http://www.kickstarter.com/ projects/1761855883/jamie-dubberly-andorquesta-dharma-2nd-studio-albu Web: www.orquestadharma.com. Also on the Latin front, John Griswold is doing a benefit fun-raiser for the Mistlin Gallery on July 27th featuring Cuban music, Cuban food, dancing and even Cuban cigars! It will be held at the M. Peterson Event Center in the downtown Modesto. Mo info soon, check out www.havanafocus.org which will be up soon. John’s at Sambaarts@live.com. Getting a Kickstart By ModestoFamous/Ruben Porras

Let’s say that you just signed up for tuba lessons with the goal in mind of becoming the most famous tuba player that the world has ever known. After years of perfecting your craft (and carrying the darn thing around) you finally decide to breakout of your basement and show the world just how hard you blow. You need to record an album, but what about money for studio time, printing and promoting? What are you going to do? Your volunteer job at the local library is certainly not going to do the trick. This is where Kickstarter comes in. Kickstarter is a crowdsourcing platform that allows people from all over the world to contribute money to make your project a reality.

You decide how much money that you will need, make a nifty video explaining your project and showcasing your skills, create a list of items that your benefactors will receive if they fund you and then set a timeframe of up to 60 days to meet your goal. If you meet the goal, you get the cash. If you don’t meet the goal, you don’t get the cash. Simple as that. Recently, an upswing in the amount of Modesto-area Kickstarter projects has been noticeable. The band that you see on the cover of this month’s issue, Solar Powered People gave themselves 30 days to make their goal of $1,700 to produce their latest record, “The Scars We Own” and they actually beat that

goal by $300. The album is slated to be released this spring. It will be promoted during a tour that will take the band to several cities. To really take advantage of the opportunities afforded by digital services the band will release the album world-wide via a number of electronic music distribution services such as Apple’s iTunes. The band which includes local talents Tony Pennington on vocal and guitar, Ryan Coscia on drums, Doug McKinnon on bass and Dustin Morris on guitar is aware that some artists are being negatively vocal about Kickstarter by saying that it encourages bands to ‘sell-out’ or disregard their true artistic ambitions. Pennington disagrees with the negativity that is being focused toward Kickstarter.

It is all rather simple -

The Scars We Own/Solar Powered People

What to Expect The music of Solar Powered People exudes a certain atmospheric presence. Some might say that McKinnon’s masterful bass chords when combined with the breathy vocals of Pennington and the throbbing percussion produced by Coscia create an almost hypnotic feel. It is common during the band’s live shows to see audience members on their feet and swaying as if entranced. There is something strange yet remarkably beautiful about the music that Solar Powered People creates.

Modesto’s Solar Powered People used Kickstarter to help fund the completion of their upcoming studio album, “The Scars We Own.”

Old Excuses/ The Good Luck Thrift Store Outfit

Released October, 2012. Available via iTunes, Amazon.com and heckabad.com There is really no way to put TGLTSO into one particular category. The band has a very unique sound that somehow manages to mix Country Western, Folk, Americana and even a bit of a rebellious punk attitude into a finished project that never sounds polished but always feels just right.

“We would never consider support from a community or our fan base as ‘selling out,’” he said. Other local acts that have had success with the platform include “Big” Earl Matthews who raised $1,680 to fund a collaborative CD featuring a number of local artists and The Good Luck Thrift Store Outfit that raised $9,820 to put out their latest studio effort, “Old Excuses.”

Take the time to search Kickstarter for local events and you will find everything from a pump designed to prospect minerals from waterways to a Turlock-based brand of candies called Big, Fat and Luscious. When asked why he believes in Kickstarter, “Big” Earl Matthews said simply, “Kickstarter is a way to turn supporters into support.” That really says it all.

The success of Kickstarter has apparently been so positive for The Good Luck Thrift Store Outfit that they are now working on using the platform to raise $3,750 to produce a long-awaited children’s album that they have been working on with a group of local artists for several years.

Take the time to listen to “Old Excuses” with an open heart and an open mind. Relive a broken heart and learn to appreciate the one you love more with “The Very Best” and understand the true art of storytelling with “Young When I Left Home.” “One Yard” will have you toe-tapping and listening intently to the story within the music while “Everywhere Now” will reach deep into you and leave you with an almost haunted feeling. TGLTSO is made up of singer-songwriters Chris Doud and Will Taylor, bassist Taylor Webster, drummer Aaron Burtch, Matt Cordano who plays a variety of lead instruments, and Chandler Pratt, who plays both mandolin and electric guitar.

My Friends and I, a collaborative Compilation CD/”Big” Earl Matthews and Friends What to Expect Just by hearing his name, you instantly realize that ”Big” Earl Matthews doesn’t do much of anything that isn’t just as big as he is and this project truly reflects that.

The goal of this project is to showcase the talents of15 Modesto-area songwriters and 24 local musicians. If you live in the Modesto area, buy this CD when it is released to listen to the soundtrack of your hometown and to learn about the passion and pride that goes into the music that is created here. For those out of the area, this project will open eyes and minds. It will prove that that the Central Valley’s rich musical history that started with Rockabilly is still absolutely alive and well today. It will show that diversity is welcomed here and that talent is limitless.

ony Trevino, lead singer and guitarist for The Pendletons (2012 MAMA winner: Best Rockabilly Band) and founder of UNITY Music, has taken his talent and love of Rock ‘n Roll to a new level, combining value, style and edge into his passion for the art of traditional barbering. Tony specializes in old-fashioned and modern cuts that embody style and class - as well as classic straight razor/hot towel shaves. All of Tony’s cuts are followed up with straight razor edging, providing a finishing touch that can’t be beat. Whether you’re seeking one of his widely acclaimed 1920’s “Boardwalk Empire” style cuts, a professional “Draper” look, found on “Mad Men” – or a classic Elvisstyle pompadour, Tony has got you covered. Last month, when the Revered Horton Heat played the Fat Cat, Tony saw a big increase in classic pompadours as people got ready for this show. In Spring of 2013, Tony will be offering a line of fine men’s grooming products, featuring hair pomades and aftershave – available both online and in-store. Spring is here!

Ozomatli will be bring their diverse style and sound to the State Theatre on April 15.

Hello everyone, Spring is here and things just keep getting better. I know, I am the guy who writes BluesView but, like many of you, my tastes run far and wide fom Classical music to 80’s and early 90’s hip hop. With this in mind I want to tell you about a band I have had the great pleasure of seeing several times live, Ozomatli. They make music that is a fusion of Latin, hip hop, and rock. Their message is one of social justice and positivity and best of all their musicianship is 100-percent gold. They will be at the State Theatre on April 15th and I hope to see you there. Moving right along - Last month we started doing Jazz Jam at Hero’s on Tuesday Night’s hosted by Ian Stambaugh. Ian is joined by Johnny Valdes and Kelly Stevens. It has been great to see folks come out and join in with this great group of players. I would encourage any of you who play Jazz to come out and join in. They are working right out of the Jazz Real Book and are quick to welcome newcomers. We will be taking the 16th of April off this Month due to a National show (Joe Buck Yourself, he is awesome too :) We are also continuing Blues ‘n Brews on Wednesday Nights at Hero’s for the 4th

s Modesto looks toward the future, Modesto is also looking for clues from our past. Cities evolve and change and over the last few years, Modesto as learned much about where to go by looking at our past. What is our authenticity as we plan for the future. What have our civic leaders learned about what makes us great as we decided where we want to go? There have been some great generations of visionary business people and elected officials in Modesto and now there is a new generation, poised to play a key role on where we go as a city and as a community. Stephanie and Brent Burnside represent both our old and new generation. With a local business with a rich history that began as the part of the old Lincoln Mercury Dealership back in the 30s, Burnside Body Shop today celebrates the classic car history of Modesto’s American Graffiti past and has invested to be high tech for evolving auto industry. This new generation looks to the future as they get involved in our community, donate time and money and help make a difference where we go in the future. Let’s meet Modesto City Council Person and CFO of Burnside Body Shop, Stephanie Burnside. ModestoView: It seems like we have a new wave of business people stepping up to get involved in Modesto, what do you think is driving this? Stephanie Burnside: I love seeing this new wave of business leaders stepping up to be champions of this great community. I think so many of us are genuinely interested in playing a critical role in the direction that our city is headed. It’s easy to sit back and criticize...it takes guts to roll up your sleeves to find solutions. We need this new wave of leadership to ensure the policies and regulations we implement are relevant.

MV: As a young professional and member of CVPE, what is something that people that live outside of Modesto don’t understand about our community? SB: It’s easy for outsiders to jump on the bandwagon of how ‘terrible’ Modesto is, but I think that they’re missing the core of what makes this community great. The people! Yes, we have our challenges and some would prefer to focus on those. There are far more incredible highlights we have to offer. Collectively we are making progress showcasing those strengths. This is where I see our new wave of business leaders playing such an important role. MV: You are a business owner and an active parent, what made you want to dive in to civic service as a city council person? SB: As a business owner it has always been important to give back to a community. This is our home! As a parent I want my kids to learn how to give back and appreciate what we’ve worked so hard to accomplish. So emulating volunteerism and

community involvement has just been a natural progression of growing up in our household. The opportunity presented itself when Kristin Olsen was elected to State Assembly and her council seat was vacated. With my involvement in community events and my business sense it lent well to the hole that needed to be filled on the council. The past two and a half years have been incredibly rewarding. I love serving this great city! MV: How did you and Brent meet? SB: Brent and I met at the Riverbank Wine and Cheese Festival through mutual friends. MV: As someone that grew up in Merced, what were your impressions of Modesto when you were growing up? SB: Merced is or was considerably smaller than Modesto so this was the place to be! There was always great shopping, golfing, fun festivals & activities going on. The Burnside Body Shop Team

MV: If Modesto had a “cool” business, the body shops or the classic car shop has got to be one of the most authentic, with a long history dating back to Gene Winfield and the classic cars of American Graffiti. What role does our Classic American Graffiti heritage play in the future of Modesto? SB: It is a pretty cool business! These technicians are magicians when it comes to capturing the essence of the American Graffiti. It’s an art! As I said earlier there are a lot of incredible high lights Modesto has to offer and capitalizing on these is key to diversifying our economy. American Graffiti is wonderful piece of our history and should remain part of our future. One of my favorite events is the North Modesto Kiwanis Graffiti parade and car show. It brings people together from all walks of life and allows us all an opportunity to peek inside that era. That nostalgia should be preserved and cherished. MV: As a City Council person, what is the biggest issue you wish that the community at large could solve. SB: I would really l like to see a compromise with regards to farmland preservation. Modesto is a dense community... ranked most dense in Stanislaus County and one of the highest in the State. I am confident most would agree that agriculture is our leading economic driver it’s just the manner in which we preserve those lands that is controversial. MV: How would you best like the people of Modesto to get involved to make Modesto better? SB: There are so many ways to get involved. Volunteer, serve on a citizen advisory committee, coordinate a neighborhood association, mentor a student...the list is huge! When it comes to being involved it doesn’t have to be in large quantities. Some feel guilty for not being able to dedicate a ton of time, but to me it’s not about the quantity, it’s the quality. Pick something that you are passionate about and find a service organization or non-profit that has

similar philosophies. Start with one event or a couple hours. The great thing about giving back is more often than not you (the one volunteering) are the one walking away having gained more. MV: Wave your magic wand, what would you change about Modesto if you had all of the resources and authority to do it. SB: That’s a tough one...probably the gang culture that is prevalent in our area. Eliminate the violence, the drugs, the ignorance and fear that is associated with that. MV: What has been one of your most memorable Modesto experiences so far? SB: I think thus far it would be serving Modesto in this leadership role. It’s challenging and rewarding. My first swearing in at the dais was definitely memorable! MV: You have a really great group of friends, what makes your relationships so special? SB: Thanks...I really do have an incredible group of friends! I am so thankful for these relationships and my incredible family. There is no way I could do what I do

Ground Breaking on Highway 219 without that love and support. It’s important to me to surround myself with those that embrace life and keep me grounded. And it’s a diverse group of people which makes it even more special because it’s not just a lot of people. MV: What legacy do you wish to leave after you have completed your terms as city council? I’d want to be remembered as the councilwoman that brought sides together to accomplish great things for our community. There are some areas where sides are too divisive to make any progress and digging heels in isn’t in the best interest of the community. Ag preservation, economic development, city/county collabo-

rations. With these challenges come great opportunities...we just need to keep our minds open MV: Describe your perfect Modesto day. SB: A perfect Modesto day...every day is perfect if I have the opportunity to cuddle with my girls, laugh with my family and friends, and check a few items off the ‘to do’ list. I love spending time with those I love and our backyard is the perfect setting for that.

Cobalt

By Javier Lopez

Underestimated or misunderstood? Loved by many hated by most? Rapper Cobalt descends from your coast, your city“ The Gwap”(Modesto). Could this battle rapper be hated for his longevity in the rap game(Hip Hop music)? I think not! Respected by his peers for sticking to his roots and planting the seed that grew from the underground. Take notes, for the words that roll off his tongue settles scores! In this tank full of shark ”Rap Battles”; is he misunderstood? A rather quick look up and down judged by his presence! His many battles say it all! Nothing like being taken back.. Pause.. “This kid is raw with his freestyle battle flows! Underestimated or misunderstood? That does not phase this man at all! Step in to the ring, but do not underestimate Modesto’s Battle Rap King! Rather humble, hard working and dedicated to his love for Hip Hop! Here is your and mine opportunity to face the music of Cobalt! Read on… TL: Cobalt at what moment did you decide to write? C: Back in 1996 I started writing battle raps against a classmate to try to defend the west coast vs. an east coast influenced class mate. My bars were harder & more hip-hop which convinced me that us Californians can be more clever than any New York based rapper. I decided to take it serious based on the positive feedback I was receiving from all the raps I was writing that year be it battle related or conceptual. TL: How did you land the name Cobalt? C: In 1996 when I decided too take hip hop serious as an artist I chose my name COBALT based on the element in the periodic table of elements in science class. The initial concept that ‘Cobalt’ was a liquid metal which meant it ‘flows hard’. The acronym chosen has been ‘Constantly Orbiting Beyond All Living Things’. With all things considered it’s an element of hip hop metaphorically that hip hop music can not do without. Life needs all elements to function & hip hop music needs COBALT45 to function.

22

TL: How do you view the rap game in California? C: I think the rap game in California is on the rise as far as real hip hop artists go. Kendrick Lamar, Hiero, Living Legends, Bored Stiff, Project Blowed, and lots of dope old school underground hip hop artists still put it down on a constant basis & get love. Plus central valley hip hop artists like Chuweee, Broke, Milya Brethren, Okwerdz, Drizzt, Nikfuq, Squalid, Atlantis Rising, Myself & Higher Ground to name a few have all been influential in shaping the central valley hip hop scene out here. There is a lot of artists I don’t have time to mention but you know who you are and all you guys need to know is that we all need to strive together as artists in every genre to create a more versatile hip hop / rap scene in California as a whole. Be it boom bap, futuristic, horrorcore, gangsta, trip hop or Christian rap, all of it is hip hop and all of it deserves respect. #209HIPHOPDONTSTOP There you have it, For all my readers and to all Cobalt fans, go online play some Cobalt! I am always keeping an ear to the wind! I listen. I observe! Do not underestimate the power of words! 49er Mental Training By Efren Martinez On March 3rd I made my 5th successful Escape from The Rock. This year’s Escape from Alcatraz Triathlon was held in the winter and the cold elements reminded us of that during all three legs of the triathlon. Swimming from Alcatraz to San Francisco is tough enough in the summer, but doing this swim in the winter with 49-degree waters for 1.5 miles is not only physically challenging, but also mentally. Honestly, if I had to compare it to an experience, I would best describe it as swimming in a sea of fire. Soon as your body hits the water, there is a stinging sensation that burns you. Just as the flame of a fire can burn, so does the freezing cold water of 49 degrees, thus this brought forth a new shared title for all us Escapee’s by the San Francisco media; we are now known as the other “San Francisco 49ers”. Yes, the water was freezing and the sea was

so rough that all of the 2000 Tri-Athletes had to hold onto each other in the boats to keep from falling over on the way to the start. As I looked around at the other TriAthletes, I could see some fear in their eyes and this is where my mental conditioning kicked in. For months prior to this Triathlon I had been training in freezing weather. Between this and cycling in the wet fog, running in the cold weather and swimming in the open oceans of Cabo last February helped me prepare myself for the physical and mental conditions at this years winter Escape from Alcatraz. Was I still cold at the year’s Triathlon in San Francisco? You bet your sweet potatoes! For many of us, hypothermia was only a few steps away and some did fall from it and sadly, one of us never made it back to shore. The dream killer, 2 weeks prior to this

event I pulled a muscle very badly and had to have some physical therapy to correct it. Instantly my thoughts were that my 5th escape from The Rock would not materialize. It wasn’t till 5 days prior to the Triathlon that I decided to enter it cautiously. I knew that if I wasn’t careful, I could really get hurt out there. So with that said, I simply gave it to God and came up with instead of running a fast race, I would run a smart one. It worked out just fine. I jumped into the water, fought as hard as I could to pull away from the island because the currents pull you to it, not letting you go. The bicycle ride was actually colder to me then the swim. On the run I was able to pass many that came up on me in the other two segments. Well, after it was all said and done, my wife asked me, “Did you have fun? You looked like you did and in fact every time you saw me, you yelled I love you!” My reply, “I did?” I guess the answer is yes, I do love her and I had a blast in deranged endurance Tri-Athlete kind of way. Well, I ended up finishing the race injury free with my best time ever out of my 4 other Escape from Alcatraz Triathlon I’ve done. As far as the winner of this Years Escape Triathlon, it went to the 2012 Triathlon Olympic Silver

Medalist. In memory of our fellow Tri-Athlete Ross Ehlinger, who passed away during the swim portion of the 2013 Escape from Alcatraz Triathlon. Log onto The Modesto View Website for some tips on how to train mentally for an endurance event. Mental Training Tips 1. Always consult with your Doctor prior to starting any kind of exercise program and make sure you get the green light for the ready set GO! 2. For cold-water endurance Events try swimming in the same water temperatures a few times prior to your Event. 3 Get your swim training around the same time of the day your swim competition will be held. 4. For open Ocean Events, get as much Open Ocean swimming in as possible. 5. Take cool showers to acclimate yourself to cold water, note: not freezing cold showers but cool showers. 6. Ride and run in the cold, start with warm clothing on at first then after you warm up, take it off. 7. This will gradually adapt you to the conditions you might face for your endurance event.

Zombies, Assassins & Losers the 209 scene

By Mike Vanek

Eroszion Photo credit: MACPhotography

This

month I would like to mention a few things... First of all is the tremendous album “The Coming Bloodbath (Turkey Vulture Records) By ZOMBIE DEATH STENCH!! This record has captured the souls of Modesto area head-bangers as well as people around in many circle have heralded as “album of the year”. This vicious blast of metal introduces you to a whole new post-apocalyptic world with each song. If you are a fan of hard working metal bands, I highly suggest getting a copy and seeing Zombie Death Stench live. They are truly gaining a great following and doing great things!! Next I’d like to mention that things in our metal scene have calmed down as of late and a real scene of unity has risen as and one of the best examples of that would be the band Eroszion!! Eroszion hails from the Ripon/ Manteca/Stockton Area but have adopted the Modesto Area Music scene as home. With a classic metal/hard rock approach and a double vocal, double guitar attack these guys and gal have really made a good

impact in our scene as of late. They come to every show and stay till the very end, every Fat Cat meeting, every function and they show 100% support to everyone involved. They are a great positive influence to our scene and I’m proud to call them friends these are seriously some of the nicest and fun people you will ever meet!! Lastly the scene lately has really been alive! Nothing But Losers have made a change at guitar parting ways with longtime guitarist Mike and moving their Sampler “STAG” to guitar. He has made them a more fluid and power groove style metal band with has shot a whole new blast of life into the NBL camp! Warpath Assassins, Cursed, Bombs Overhead & newcomers Unrealm have all been making waves and as I type this our CVDM brethren are currently on a national tour so everything is rolling in full gear in the 209 right now its great!! That’s it for this month for me as always keep one foot in the gutter and one fist in the gold!!! www.facebook.com/metalview209

I think about the meaning of tolerance I find it is like a complex dish made of these different components: self control, absence of judgement, kindness, patience, endurance and love. One person I know who practices tolerance in an exemplary way is our teacher, a 3rd generation T’ai Chi Master from China. First of all, he treats everyone the same, regardless where they come from, how long they studied T’ai Chi or how good (or bad) they are in their practice. No special treatments, even if you happen to be a diligent, serious student, even if your movements and understanding are correct. I have studied with this teacher for 30 years and know about his ability to tolerate our many mistakes and character flaws. Rather than reprimanding, he insinuates correct and appropriate behavior through his own quiet and self-con-

Tolerance

By Mary Layton

trolled conduct. One feels uplifted in this atmosphere of tolerance, or absence of judgment and learns and discovers things easily. It is by his example that we learn to tolerate each other in and outside of class. Tolerance, in my view, so often deals with people’s comfort zones. The weather may be too hot or too cold, the practice may be too hard and painful, or not challenging enough; everyone’s judgment creates a certain limitation of how far they may ultimately go. I think it’s o. k. to be a little too hot or a little hungry or thirsty, if you can tolerate it for a while, it will make you stronger. So may be tolerance has something to do with going beyond what you perceived as your limitations. For more information go to : taichi4modesto.com or call (209) 572 4518.

Go Downtown Modesto

It’s Modesto Certified Farmers Market time Oh my fellow Modestans, there is really no better way to start a Modesto weekend than with a trip to the Modesto Certified Farmers Market. This year ModestoView is one of the presenting sponsors as it is something that really makes our city special. Killer bacon from Greens, Squeekers from Oakdale Cheese, Sciabica Olive Oil, fresh flowers, tasty produce from our local farms coffee, live music, chef demonstrations and so much more. Big thanks to Alfred Matthews for always being there for the good things in Modesto and we are proud to partner with them to bring the Farmers Market to life this year. April is Saturday morning , 7 am– 1 pm and the Thursday morning markets will start in May. See you at the market and don’t forget to bring your shopping bags and there is plenty of bicycle parking. www.modestocfm.com

Play Ball! GO MODESTO NUTS!

It is time for baseball season. The kids in school have been playing for a while now, everyone has been tracking spring training and watching all of the trades. Now it is time for the season to start! Yes it is true. It is time to root root root for the home team and buy some peanuts and Crackerjack and have a great time. Local baseball is so much more fun than pro ball. Everything is so close and the minor league players really want to play. The Modesto Nuts open their home season on April 11 at John Thurman field with a run againt Lancaster. The Nuts are home on April 11-14 vs Lancaster April 15-17 vs Visalia April 26-28 vs San Jose
