EDITOR’S Greetings Modesto Friends: W

e live life on a rollercoaster. Just as soon as we reach the summit and put our hands up in the air and race down, we start to hear the clicks of the uphill as the next climb starts. This summer has just blown by, so that is why we are celebrating a “summer fling” on our cover. Since we are dedicated to finding the best things happening in town and the best places to eat and the best businesses to support, you have come to the right place to get the most from your last summer days. The ModestoViewCrew is here to celebrate every last second of a Modesto USA summer before the kids go back or away to school. We feature a special interview with Pam Able, Modesto City Schools Superintendent and she has some great ideas on how to get the most out of education. Just like a rollercoaster, we are transitioning from the loop the loop to the curves as we hit August. We are so very proud to introduce a new talented young writer, Leia Johnson. This spark plug of a young lady is loaded with great ideas, she is super organized and is a fabulous daughter and dedicated Girl Scout. Scouting does grow strong girls and my own daughters are richer for their scouting experience We welcome Leia and can’t wait to see her Modesto view. You will see a celebration of Teen Modesto in our center spread. We just came back from a trip through Europe and it was great being able tell people from many different countries that we were from the city from American Graffiti and where George Lucas is from. Nice huh? There was even a Happy Days Diner in Paris that had a statue of the carhop from the American Graffiti soundtrack and our June cover. Think about this for a second, we can do so much more to make our city appealing and interesting to visitors and our own residents alike, all by just bringing our own history to life. It is really pretty simple and it is all there, ready for us to do something with it. We do live in an interesting place. Best of all, my daughters grew up, really enjoying this city. It is up to each and every one of us to make sure we pass this on. They are proud of where they are from when they meet new friends in college or in their careers. This month marks the month when Becky and I become empty nesters, Abbey at Berkeley, Madison living and working in San Francisco and we get ready to open our own new chapter here in Modesto. We are very excited to share this with you, our wonderful readers, contributors and our dynamite advertisers. That is why ModestoView exists; to Serve Civic Pride Daily and showcase the good things in town to our friends, our kids and the new arrivals in Modesto. We thank and welcome all of you. ModestoView is for you. Chris Murphy Publisher and Founder, ModestoView chrism@modestoview.com ModestoView would not be possible without the generous support of Sierra Pacific Warehouse Group. We are a family owned warehousing and logistics company, serving some of the best companies in the USA. We are responsible community citizens, supporting arts and community programs in Modesto that make our city stronger. We recently had the honor of showcasing our company to Sen. Galgiani and Rep Adam Gray and their teams to review the importance of our ag-based economy and the role that logistics has to help the Modesto area feed the world and ship our products globally.

I cannot believe that I am writing my eighth column this year. This is insane my friends. Costco is already getting Christmas items and dancing skeletons and I’m still trying like crazy to enjoy the moment that we are in. Why is everything happening so fast? I want to get back to something this month. When I first started writing this column I was writing about myself and my adventures. There were paragraphs and paragraphs about medical appointments, my ridiculous trouble holding onto love and my beautiful pair of little girls that stopped being little a long, long time ago. The point is that I miss writing that sort of thing. I miss little old ladies walking up to me at Savemart with open arms and saying things like, “It’s ok son. She’ll come back one day and when she does she will bring back your couch and your dishes and even your dignity!” If any little old ladies are reading this, I could use you right about now. My girlfriend of almost three years just dumped me via email. In my opinion, that is taking technology a bit too far. I was saving to rent us a nice house where our kids would have more space to do what they do. I was thinking about wedding plans and honeymoon destinations. I wanted one of those neat cakes that look like hamburgers or the Stat-

ue of Liberty. I got bamboozled or maybe hornswoggled. Maybe even both! So, now life moves on. I needed to feel creative to get through my funk so I spent the rental savings on awesome new camera gear and some new goodies that will ultimately benefit the local businesses that I handle social media for. It turns out that spending money to actually improve where I live feels pretty amazing. I suppose it comes full circle. I get paid to help and I put the money back where it came from. Sounds good to me! What do you have planned for this month? Will you tackle the crowds at X-Fest? Will you get lost in indie films and concerts at the State Theatre? Maybe you will take the time to explore the areas around our city. We live in a beautiful part of California. I have a suggestion - On a cool night, go to the top of the Twelfth Street parking garage and just breathe a bit. Enjoy the 360-degree

view of Modesto. You will see our little city in a way that you have never seen it before and you might realize that we are really lucky to be where we are. We have trees that provide shade, unique architecture and lots of color. All of that is infused with just a tad of uncontrollable chaos and there is nothing wrong with that. A little chaos gives us something to focus on and learn from. I’ll be the guy with the white camera taking pictures of random things in Modesto this month. I’m not too sad about the whole girlfriend fiasco. More than anything, I miss my friend. I’m actually quite hopeful. Right before I had my liver transplant I had over 20 tubes and wires sticking through me and I weighed just about 110 pounds. I’m pretty sure that I’ve made every mistake possible in my life. I’ve learned that everything happens for a reason. I will always believe that. That’s not a bad way to live. Have a good month. Relax. Unwind. Buy a new or used camera no matter the cost. Look through the viewfinder and find yourself. If you need anything that I can help with, email me at r.porras@me.com.

BAR A Liquid Diet - Doctor’s Orders

by Dr. Kate Serpa Photos by Dr. Philip Johnson

Social anxiety is clinically proven to be the number one killer of a fun time, but do not worry; Dr. Kate and Dr. Phil (not that one) are here to help. The following three locations are not only lovely, they all also have surprise beer/cocktails. Alcohol is my clinically unproven remedy to help nearly any social situation; side effects may include spontaneity and panty un-bunching. Doesn’t a drink make everything a bit better? Of course it does.

Trust me; I’m a doctor...*

Queen Bean with Kevin Williams

State Theatre with Sue Richardson My very first job was working at the State Theatre (pre-renovations) when I was but a wee teenage nondrinker. Oh, how we have both grown up. The State Theatre, aside from being the only historical theatre in the region that shows independent and classic movies, has a bar! I mean, I was previously aware I could get a champagne cocktail, but was unawares they featured beer on tap, such as Dust Bowl and Sierra Nevada, some of my favorite wines like Ghost Pines and Dancing Bull, Cold House Vodka, and a long list of my favorite mixed. And the best part is, you and your lovely champagne cocktail are not limited to only the front lobby! No! You and your full cup are allowed to venture into the theatre and enjoy each other’s company while your watching your movie/concert/people making out in the row in front of you. You know I’m kidding about that last bit.

Oh, Queen Bean, I’ve been coming to you for so long! Why did no one mention beer?! Actually, it was probably for the best. I need to have at least a few sober afternoons around normal people every now and then. But then there’s beer… and the re-vamped back patio, and the live music, and the art, and the people, and the sandwiches, and the coffee (when it’s too early for beer/ recovery from beer), and everything that makes the Bean the fantastic place I know and love. Sitting on the Bean back patio with a California Delight sandwich and a Sierra Nevada is a truly a thing of beauty. The Bean is also open late night for open mic nights on Sundays and scattered live music throughout the week. I consider the Queen Bean one of Modesto’s distinguishing features, and you must come have a beer on the patio with me if you haven’t been yet.

Bella Vagos Salon with Meagan Coleman I had NO IDEA this existed, and now I’ve penned it into my weekly planner. Every Thursday night, Bella Vagos Salon hosts artisan pizza nights from 5-9, featuring wood-fire pizzas, salads, wine by the glass and bottle, select beers, cider, $10 bottomless bubbles from 5-7, live music, AND the salon is open during all this fun stuff. Are you listening properly? You and I can go into Bella Vagos after work, get our toes done, go outside on their lovely patio, order a bottles wine each (I don’t mess around with the relaxation), get a few Asian pear & gorgonzola pizzas, let our toes dry, and listen to live music -- if that doesn’t sound like a tall glass of calm the hell down to you, we should definitely get you a massage before the pizzas come out because Phil and I don’t want to hang out with your stressed out face all night. Oh yes, and gentlemen do not feel left out. DO inquire about Bella Vagos’ men’s corner to join in on the fun.

The State Theatre - 1307 J St., Modesto (209) 527-4697 Queen Bean Coffee House - 1126 14th St., Modesto (209) 521-8000 Bella Vagos Salon - 521 McHenry, Modesto (209) 573-8605 ALL of these lovely establishments have Facebook pages! Look them up for reference on upcoming events! • Silly Disclaimer: Just in case it is not obvious, Kate and Philip are not real Doctors, they just play them on TV.

PERFORMING A Time to Perform in July by Kaye Osborn

Hello August!

School begins very soon for many valley students! So strange that school is starting early! Well, cheers to a great school year! I am hopeful to were able to see the brilliant performance by Dwight D. Mahabir in Looking Over the President’s Shoulder based on the memoirs of Alonzo Fields, Chief Butler of the White house from 1932-1953! Dwight was truly amazing! He acts and sings memorably! He made everything look so effortless. It beautifully directed by Richard Mann. Also, the new play fest by Modesto Junior College and Prospect Theater was very entertaining.

A Shout Out to Center Stage Conservatory! Please support this downtown theater group. Tracie Sprague and Megan James are very passionate about their lower level studio. They are busy casting their new season. I am thrilled that YES Company continues to offer one performance of their summer musical for our Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing community. My wish is that more theater groups will begin to offer the same opportunity to the DHH audience. CHEF

by Dana Johnson

Dana~licious on the Chopping Block! Calling all carnivores!

Chopping Block Butcher Shop and Deli is now open on Coffee and Floyd ready to satisfy the meat lovers of Modesto! Brother and sister owners, John Pallios and Denise Zagaris grew up in and worked their adult lives in the family Richland Market grocery business until the last store closed late in 2012. Not ready for retirement and missing their customers, Denise, John, and John’s wife, Judy, shared in the vision of an old fashioned butcher shop and deli. As far as I know there is no place like it in all of Modesto! So welcome to our grateful community So as I walked through the door of this quaint store I immediately had that friendly neighborhood feeling like when I was a kid growing up in a small Bay Area town. The aromas in the air instantly made me hungry. My eyes swiftly fixated on the authentic butcher glass case! Recognizing the all choice meats alongside the prime NY Steak! Oh yes, filet mignon, pork chops, bacon, kabobs, chicken, deep pit roasts, and countless flavored sausages. 29 Chopping Block sausages in all are made right there on site. From the Italian to the Greek, to the unique Merquez, a North African harrisa sausage, as well as the famous Sheboygan Brat of Wisconsin stands out! But wait! More meat choices for me to sink my teeth into! Chopping Block’s butcher, Karl Curnow also makes marinated meats via a special 30 minute tumbling process and vacuum seals in the flavors throughout the meats, making this insatiable carnivore’s taste buds marvel! Chopping Block also features an impressive array of local products from Modesto, Ceres, and Turlock in the store; Sciabica’s Olive Oil, The Mix chocolate candy, Fiscalini Cheese, Joseph Farms, Sparrow Lane

10

Olive Oil, Bava, Charlie’s Finishing Sauce, peaches and nectarines from Fidel’s, Zoe’s Coffee, and Enzo’s “Red Ass” marinates and rubs. Plus Chopping Block features Brenda Raper’s decadent fresh baked cookies, (John’s favorites), as well as Denise’s very own marinara. Be sure to try the Taboule and Quinoa salads, Denise mixes together for herself for lunch almost every day! This store offers more than I imagined. Indoor and outdoor seating, BBQ on Fridays, $5.99 daily ciabatta sandwich specials, quiche, 4 varieties of garden salads, grab n’ go meals, picnic baskets, catering, and the coolest cupcake style- lasagna, eggplant parmesan, or meat loaf! If that wasn’t enough meat for you, order the St, Louis ribs and get your fill! I enjoyed a look at the refrigerated dessert section for my next visit! Modesto View signature question: Beatles or Stones? Denise softly said Beatles, while John hesitated and agreed Beatles but confessed he is a country music fan. I’m usually thinking a lil’ Rolling Stones go a long, long rockin’ way! Just sayin’!! On August 2, 2013 live on FOX40 News at 9:25am you can see me, Dana~licious with Denise Zagaris doing my regularly scheduled monthly cooking segment. I will feature Chopping Block’s incredible sausages with my own original recipes that you can create at home. INTER Education for the success and the next generation Pam Able – Modesto City Schools Superintendent by Chris Murphy An

educated population makes a city strong and creative. Good jobs need talent and companies look for a talented workforce. To get into a good college, students need to be dedicated and have a school district that has the tools and instruction deliver a top-tier education. Accomplishing this is the goal of Modesto City Schools Superintendent Pam Able. Pam moved to Modesto in the summer before her freshman year at Davis High. She is one of four children and her dad was a doctor and her mom was a homemaker who later owned a travel agency Pam has a Master’s Degree in Educational Leadership from St. Mary’s College, Education Administration and Multiple Subject Credentials with CLAD Certification, and a Bachelor’s Degree in Journalism from the University of California, Berkeley. (Chris’s Comment: Go Bears!) Pam is married to Jack Able and they have two kids, Michael 21, a student at CSU Stanislaus and Maggie, 30 who is a teacher with her second child on the way. Pam began her teaching career in the Stanislaus Union School District. She joined Modesto City Schools in 1994. After four years, she moved into site administration, working as a principal at elementary school campuses, and then earned District level positions in Human Resources and Educational Services. The Modesto City Schools Board of Education announced Pam’s selection as the next Superintendent March 29, 2011. She began the new role July 1, 2011. Let’s meet Pam. ModestoView: My kids are a product of the Modesto public school system that they are doing great. What opportunities do you think kid have as they look forward to a local education?

Pam Able: There are so many opportunities available in Modesto City Schools! I will share two for each school level. Beginning at the elementary level, all sites employ a science-based, research-validated character education and violence prevention curriculum called PeaceBuilders. The program uses six principles, like pledging to right wrongs and help others, to set behavior expectations and reduce aggression for the entire school site. Thanks to a grant from the Stanislaus Community Foundation, PeaceBuilders is in place at all 22 elementary school sites. Two of our elementary sites offer a Dual Language Academy (DLA). Students enrolled in the DLA spend 50% of their day learning in English, and the other 50% learning in Spanish. By 6th grade, students are bilingual and biliterate! At the junior high (and high school) level, students can participate in AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination). AVID is a college readiness system designed to increase learning and performance and close the achievement gap for our English language learners. Also at the junior high level (and throughout the District), music programs! Despite tough budget times, Modesto City Schools continues to provide vocal and instrumental music programs for students. All Modesto City Schools’ high schools offer specialized programs – general education classes combined with specific classes designed to teach students marketable occupational skills, abilities, attitudes and work habits in a wide array of disciplines. Specialized programs include child development, digital media, health, public safety, culinary arts, and many, many more. High schools also offer a variety of extra-curricular and cocurricular activities. From clubs to dances to athletics, there is something for everyone!

MV: We keep on hearing that we have an undereducated workforce in our area, what perspective can you offer to that point of view? PA: I believe that Modesto is known for its agriculture, and a majority of the jobs in the area do not require a high level of education. If Modesto can offer jobs that require a higher education level, the workforce will have the appropriate level of education. MV: It is well known that Modesto has one of the most complicated and diverse populations, when it comes to teaching across our community, what challenges does this offer. PA: Our diverse population challenges staff to look for new ways to reach students every day. Nearly 25% of Modesto City Schools’ students are English learners. There are 40 languages represented in the District. Nine out of 10 English learners are native Spanish speakers. District-wide, 70% of students qualify for the Free/Reduced Lunch program. The number jumps to 85% at the elementary level. How can we expect students to learn if their basic needs are not being met? MV: Parental involvement is so key in child development and educations, what are some great ways parents can be involved, even if they both work? PA: Parental involvement is key, but that doesn’t necessarily mean parents must be volunteering at the school site. At the most basic level, parents must show their children that they value education. They can accomplish this by talking to their kids about their day at school, reviewing their homework, reading together, attending parent/teacher conferences, staying up to date on what is happening at the school. MV: It is in the best interest of our com-

Pam Able – Photo Modesto City Schools munity to make sure that everyone has a good chance for an education and no one is left behind, what are we doing to encourage students to go off the front and truly excel? PA: I often tell employees, no matter their role in Modesto City Schools, they have an effect on our students’ education. I think the same could be said for the entire community – no matter your role in the community, you have an effect on our student’s education. Are you positively affecting our students? Our students need to know that our community stands behind them and our schools. MV: What can we do to promote the advantages of the International Baccalaureate and AP programs. PA: To promote all the programs offered in Modesto City Schools, we must share more of our student success. The International Baccalaureate (IB) Program at Modesto High School and Advance Placement (AP) classes offered at all other high schools help students stand out in college admissions, earn college credits and skip introductory college classes. Students master collegelevel course work and expectations, while in high school. While IB and AP are great, they aren’t for everyone. We must remember that not all of our students plan to attend college, and we must provide those students programs to prepare them to enter the job force. Modesto City Schools offers a variety of Regional Occupational Programs (ROP) programs that are available to students throughout the county. MV: What do you think has to happen to

stop our brain drain of kids leaving Modesto? PA: Our students are leaving Modesto for exciting, cutting edge organizations. How can Modesto attract those same organizations to set up shop if our brightest continue to leave? We need more Modesto City Schools graduates like Davis alumni Dave Darmstandler and others that return to make the choice to set up shop in Modesto and offer exciting, challenging job opportunities. MV: Kids that are involved in the arts typically score higher in standardized testing, what do you feel the role of arts in education plays and what can our community to to ensure the continuation and strengthening of these programs? PA: Arts help to develop well-rounded, articulate students. Modesto City Schools continues to provide our students with a variety of opportunities to learn and experience music, visual, performing and literary arts. Often, school art programs are the only way students experience the arts. The Arts Education program offered through the Gallo Center for the Arts offers a wonderful opportunity for our students to experience a variety of arts on a grand scale. Community groups have stepped up to bring down the cost of attending performances. To ensure the continuation and strengthening of arts in education, support Modesto City Schools’ arts efforts by attending a school music or drama performance. MV: If you had the ability to wave a magic wand and make one change to our school system, what would it be? PA: I would ensure 100% parent participation in our students education. I think that would make a world of difference. MV: What are some of the things you enjoy most about living in in Modesto? PA: First and foremost, the people in our community are amazing. I have received so much support and encouragement since I began this journey. Our location in the valley provides proximity to everything. I can enjoy the coast one day, the mountains and the city in a matter of hours. Our local restaurants and business provide products and services that rival any big city.

August at the Mansion and Museum by Wayne Mathes

The current exhibit at the McHenry Museum is paintings by Bob Miller. The topic is American classic cars or car parts such as fins, hubcaps, headlights, etc. There are some 30 paintings in the exhibit. All of the paintings are for sale. The Museum hours are Tuesday through Sunday, Noon to 4 p.m. It is closed on Monday. The exhibit will run through the end of August The McHenry Mansion is open and looking better than ever after the fire. At the time of the fire, we were in the process of restoring three additional rooms in the areas vacated by the gift store. The gift store is now part of the Visitors Center, two doors down at 924 15th Street. We have restored the maid’s room, a guest bedroom, shifted the child’s room and are now featuring the McHenry room. The McHenry room contains family portraits and other memorabilia that were never in the McHenry Mansion when the McHenry’s lived there. It is also used as a dressing room for brides. The Mansion is open from Sunday through Friday from Noon to 4 p.m. It is closed on Saturdays since that is a popular time for weddings at the Mansion. If one is interested in renting the Mansion for a wedding or other special event, they can call Laura Mesa at (209) 652-7190.

ROCKABILLY

The Art of Rockabilly by Chris Murphy

The art of Rockabilly is amazing. More than any other kind of music, Rockabilly is a lifestyle, has it’s own art, culture, feel and pulse. More than anything else, the cars, the flames, the stand up bass, the twang and the high energy fun all has roots in Modesto. Classic cars and Graffiti cruising, the legendary custom work of Gene Winfield with the candy apple gloss chopped Mercs, the slappin’ percussion of the stand up bass of Fred Maddox bring Rockabilly home in Modesto and blend that with our airbrushed and chromed Impalas leading to a new generation. This is our music, this is our sound and if you are not yet a Rockabilly fan, you soon will be. Check out Rockabilly Row at X Fest and the Rockabilly showcases at Hero’s during August. You will love it and you have one more reason to be proud of Modesto USA. We are a classic American City.

ROCKABILLY, ROCK N ROLL, BLUES, COUNTRY, HIP HOP AND TATTOOS HAVE NO RULES TO THE ART! by Jennifer Allsup Whether you are old school music fan or a Hip-Hop fan, tattoo artists don’t discriminate! The passion for tattooing has been going strong for many centuries. “Norman Sailor Jerry” Collins was a legendary tattoo artist and his passion was for playing his saxophone when not making someone’s vision come true with a beautiful art piece on their bodies. This brings us to six creative tattoo artists in Modesto. Each tattoo artist has the same passion for being the best they can be. Izzy, Brook, Jared, Jeremy, Justin & Nick all work at Foundation Tattoo and each one has a passion for different types of musical talent. Here are three of their stories. You can read the extended profiles on modestoview.com and learn a lot more. David (Izzy) Irizarry Owner/Founder/Tattooer at Foundation Tattoo Parlor (FTP) I never in my wildest dreams thought I could ever make a living by doing something as fun as creating art. But now here I am writing about my thriving tattoo studio and the humble beginnings of my career as a tattoo artist. Funny how life works out sometimes! Although I’ve had no formal education in art, I feel as though I’ve been training to be a tattooer my whole life. As a child I loved drawing dinosaurs and astronauts, as a youth I would copy my favorite characters from the funny papers, and in high school I would try to emulate my favorite comic book artists. I remember studying old native tribal designs and then drawing fake tattoos with sharpies

on the swim team before competitions. In hindsight, I can see now that all of these innocent exercises in my youth have helped me invaluably in becoming a better artist and tattooer. Music has always had a big influence on me, and I have a very diverse palette of things that I enjoy. My tastes are always changing, however my favorite things to hear while tattooing are blues, old country western, classical, and oldies. They provide a soothing effect for me and my clients, which helps us relax and gets my creative juices flowing. Facebook: David Irizarry (Izzy) Instagram: @izzytattoo1224 Brook Bailey (brookbaileytattoo.com) It was inevitable that I would do something creative in life from day one, my Mother, a fine artist, and my Father, a wood worker and musician. I continued my love for the arts into High School and by graduation I supposed to be off to art school in the “big city” of San Francisco. ModestoView believes in the youth in our community and we are proud to feature a few here as this new school year starts. These teens are artists, actors, athletes, models and public figures and they represent their peers well. We wish all of the youth in our community continued success and hope to see all of their dreams come true.

She has a unique gift in regard to marketing and public relations that she hopes will help her attain her ultimate goal of becoming a business owner. Taylor’s path in life will likely be different than that of many of her peers, but that is what makes her special. It has been a pleasure watching her grow into an amazing young woman and I look forward to her having a life full of color, hope and inspiration.

Submitted by Krislynne Wallace-Helbling We spoke to Jonathan’s mother, Krislynne Wallace-Helbling while she was watching her son practice at the University of Michigan during the AAU Junior Olympics where he is running unattached meaning that he is not aligned with a particular coach, club or sponsor. The young runner who runs 100-meter and 200-meter events has also ran at the University of Oregon where he posted a rocket-fast time personal-best 12.47 in the 100m while running for the Central Valley RoadrunnersRunning Club of Modesto. He achieved his personal record time of 25.53 in the 200m while running unattached in Reno, Nevada. Helbling has also ran for Big Valley Christian and will run for Savage Junior High during the next school year. “Ball Dudes”

On the television, Barry Bonds shoots a line drive foul that nearly decapitates old Mike Walt. Mike is a ball dude, one of two old farts hired by the Giants to patrol the foul lines chasing balls and tossing them to the fans before the fans fall out of the stands trying to get a souvenir. Kruk and Kuip, the play-by-play and color guys, point out that Mike and Mike Johnson, the other ball dude, had grown up together in Escalon, a little town just down the Stanislaus River from Modesto, and had played baseball together since third grade. “That’ll be us,” I tell George, who reclines on the couch sucking slowly on a Pediapop. We, too, have been best friends and teammates since third grade. I played second

by Ken White and wore #7, in honor of Mickey Mantle, the Mick. He played first and wore #30, in honor of Orlando Cepeda, the Baby Bull. “Some day,” he says, a little out of breath, in between long draws on the medicinal popsicle. “Be a little tough to bend over with this,” he adds, pointing at the stoma that feeds the plastic sack of body waste dangling at his emaciated waist. “Hell, old Mike can’t touch his toes, either,” I reply. Just then, old Mike lets one scoot between his legs, loses his balance, and topples ass-over-teakettle. “Maybe,” George says, and we both chuckle. As I stand beside the wooden casket floating above the dark hole in the bright September sun, the day after the Giants sweep the Dodgers, I think of the ball dudes and all the other things my best friend and I will never do as planned. You see, cancer bats last

Endurance By Mary Layton The Zen View has become so Zen it dissolved into thin air in the hot month of July. What doesn’t kill you makes you stronger... Endurance. My mind seems to surrender a little more easily in hot weather. I slow down. Think of what really is priority. Actually, thanks to the heat I become more sensible. It’s a survival thing. The heat also makes me dream. Of people coming together to do fun stuff. Singing with people in a cool place. Weaving baskets under a shady tree.

Drumming, barefoot, dancing, feeling free. Painting, writing, community gardening. And counting our blessings. It is neat that thanks to the Modesto View we now have a platform to communicate ideas, share our talents. Show up. A great way to make us realize that we have already a lot of good stuff here.. and more good stuff to come. taichi4modesto.com or call (209) 572-4518

may become an annual tradition for you and your family! Here’s another way kids can contribute: I am a member of the Leos Club which is the youth organization of Lions Club International. Our club organized a donation of backpacks filled with new school supplies such as pencils, rulers, and scissors for kids in need. Speaking of back-to-school always gets me thinking about my favorite place; The Ice Cream Company! If you’re not familiar with The Ice Cream Company, it has been

around for over thirty years! Their homemade ice cream is delicious and their good food, service, and atmosphere makes it a place the whole family will love. I have been going there since I was little and my parents went there a lot when they were kids too! It’s always fun to make new traditions with your family. Mid October

Have you ever asked yourself how, or who comes up with organizing talent competitions? So has this guy ..so Tru did some research, which brings me to introduce this gentlemen, Reggie Rucker, Media Marketing Director for X Fest. Did you tune into the latest online XFest voting competitions? Even though the voting is over, the sole purpose was to reach more people to vote for local talent to play at XFEST 2013 and at the same time, promote XFest! If you find yourself double fisted remember to check the line up! TL: Were you the head of organizing the competition? RR: Yes, I was responsible for managing the competition. I am the Social Media Marketing Director for X Fest, and am responsible for managing all aspects of our social media efforts, including special events and contests that will be promoted almost exclusively through our social media channels. TL: Who came up with the idea and how dose it work? RR: It was a concept that Chris Ricci wanted to try with the success of our Miss X Fest contest. He felt we could generate similar enthusiasm around getting friends of bands to vote for them to play X Fest. TL: Who are the winners for the onstage performance act for the X Fest?

22

P. Ocean RR: Our winners are Mid October (an alternative rock band), and King Mackalot, P. Ocean, and Jr. Cali. TL: how many voters voted? RR: tallied about 5,000 votes over 5 rounds of voting TL: Do you plan on doing this again next year? RR: This is something we will likely do again next year. It went well for us, and we already have ways we can improve on the concept next year. TL: Were there any artists that stuck out during the competition RR: All of our final four were great. Mid October and Mini Game Villains (who lost in a close race to Mid October in the Group Final) were both very strong. P. Ocean and Mackalot had a good turnout for our Live Final in the 10th Street Plaza at Fuzio Universal Bistro last Thursday (the 18th). Jr. Cali put on a good performance. We had quality acts who earned their chance to perform. There you have a behind the curtain look at what it takes and the results of dedicated people coming to come to organize events like this one. was introduced to CIYH through a bay area friend, and it quickly became one of my most useful tools for finding acoustic talent. It’s shorthand for ConcertsInYourHome.com, the brainchild of award-winning musician Fran Snyder. The premise behind this network is to provide artists with the best environments to share their music, without the noise and distractions found in bar/club settings. This is a matter of immeasurable importance, as I know firsthand. Sometimes I will be at a venue trying to watch a gifted friend of mine perform, yet keep getting my attention pulled away by the poker game on the TV. Fail! Another time, I was starting to ignore the performer - someone I had booked! - in favor of the action flick on the TV. Fail! Fortunately, my good friend Sue Cotter (a fellow CIYH host) was sitting right beneath the flatscreen, and sneakily reached up and put an end to that distraction. Thank you for that, Sue. Friends don’t let friends miss out on great music. For the most part, booking through CIYH means performing in someone’s living room. I’ve hosted intimate showcases in mine for over a year now, which have led to many wonderful new ventures. 40% of the artists featured at this year’s Modesto Unplugged Music Festival, for instance, were either national artists I found through the network, or otherwise had performed at my house concert series. Downtown Modesto has some good listening room venues as well, where it’s just you and the music. One space I’m starting to

work with more is Peer Recovery Art Project at 1222 J St. John Black, mastermind behind this gallery, came to the rescue recently after I learned of the loss of a MUMfest venue with almost no notice. John gave us a new home for an awesome country/ folk afternoon showcase. Peer Recovery is a great spot to enjoy some live music; hold an art show, art classes, or songwriting workshops; or just to sit back and chill. As John will tell you, this gallery belongs to the entire arts community. I open my late summer/fall run of shows there on Monday 8/5, with October Gold, a sweet guitar/violin duo from Montreal, supported by piano/trumpet/vocal looping artist Stephanie Rearick from Wisconsin, and emerging local songwriter Andrew Alvarez. Showcase runs from 6-9 PM, with a $5 cover. Then on Wednesday the 7th, check out folk/roots quartet West My Friend (also from Canada) with central valley troubadour Al Medina, sharing his mix of acoustic rock, folk and blues at Deva Café, 1202 J St., from 7-9 PM. Only $5 for this lovely night of music as well. Also at the Peer Recovery, there are new monthly music events - second Thursdays, PRP staff member and local songwriter Benjamin Phelps hosts an open jam starting at 7 PM. Third Thursdays, during the downtown Art Walk, come hear a local performer from 5:30-8:30. This month Al Medina will be featured. Enjoy the cool art there as well, and don’t forget to say hi to Mr. Black, a definite white hat for the local arts scene.

FIT Ready, Set, Compress! by Efren Martinez Being an entertainer, you might say that I prefer to be a bit flamboyant. (you think?) So when I stumbled upon a Zensah compression sportswear website one day, the florescent yellow, green and pink socks defiantly caught my eye. I just had to have them for my flashy look at my races. 2012 was my best racing year ever. In fact, in all the competitions I competed, I either won or placed outside of two. Incredible. My times were starting to be screaming fast and in one race I actually took the over all win in the 1 mile with a 5:29 fallowed by taking the over all win in the 5K with a time of 17:59. It was then that I started to really pay attention to the science behind compression. Little did I know that the benefits from these compression socks would totally outweigh the flashy look I was shooting

for. To my amazement, I learned wearing compressions garments not only enhanced my performance during a run, they also helped me recover much faster. According to the research I found online, the benefits included; enhanced blood circulation as a result of improved venous return, faster recovery, reduced muscle oscillation/

vibration and increased muscle support. WOW! So as I kept reading various studies on compression wear, I started to understand the science and it all fell into place as to why I was able to have such a great racing year in 2012. Today, I not only consider myself a Zensah Compression Athlete, but I try to encourage others to experience the many benefits of using compression wear at their races, in their training or even at work. Work? Yes work. After noticing the many benefits from my compressions leg sleeves including the reduction of the bulging veins after a hard run, I decided to buy my wife a pair for work. My wife is in customer service and according to her step counter, putting on 5-miles in an 8-hour day is about the av-

erage per workday. Since she’s been wearing her compressions leg sleeves, her legs aren’t as bothersome as they would have been without wearing them. For more information on my preferred compression wear, visit Zensah online at www.zensah.com thequakedj@hotmail.com www.facebook.com/QuakeFitness

Fitness Run Tip On the road: Use different landmarks to mark your walking and running intervals. You might run to a tree, mailbox, telephone pole, or stop sign. Then walk. Once you catch your breath, pick another landmark to run to. Then walk to recover. Repeat the cycle two or three times.

August 2013

by ‘Big’ Earl Matthews Kiwi superstar, Billy Tk Jr. will take the stage along with Mofo Party Band and Big Earl and the Cryin’ Shame on August 3rd at the State Theatre. The event, Beer, Blues and BBQ will feature catering by Doc’s BBQ Pit.

Hello Music lovers, I hope you are enjoying all that summer has to offer. I only have a couple of things to tell you about for the month of August. This won’t take long. At the State Theatre on August 3rd, Beer, Blues & BBQ is taking place. Featuring, all the way from New Zealand Billy TK Junior, from Fresno, MoFo Party Band and yours truly, Big Earl & the Cryin’ Shame. Billy is an absolutely amazing Guitar Slinger who is touring the West Coast of the United States for the very first time and I couldn’t be happier to share the stage with him. As most Modesto Blues fans already know, MoFo Party Band is one of the best show bands in California. They will keep you dancing in the aisles! Doc’s BBQ will be serving tasty Southern eats during this event and that is going to make for a night to remember. You can get tickets in advance from the ticket office at the State for only $15 or online at thestate.org. For those of you who read my column every month, you already know I have been working with 13 local bands/solo artists all year in order to put out a compilation album. We raised money using Kickstarter and have held fund raisers and worked our butts off to get this thing finished. I am happy to announce that the project is complete and it sounds great! We are over the moon with excitement and planning at

24

least two fun CD release parties. At the time of this writing I only have one date solid and that is going to be at the Prospect Theater on August 16th. We will have 12 of the 13 acts represented on the CD performing short sets starting at 7pm and going into the wee hours. This is a celebration folks. We can’t wait to share the end results of all of our united efforts. This project has been a true collaboration with many of the artists (24 in total) playing on multiple tracks and on multiple instruments. I need to give special credit to Mr. Chandler Pratt (Good Luck Thrift Store Outfit, House of Orange) for his work recording and mixing this compilation and playing on every single track. He is awesome and we love him. Also to everyone who funded the project via our Kickstarter campaign, thank you for sticking with us. To conclude, music is good, community is important and when you put the two together you are improving the quality of life for everyone who makes the effort to be involved. I hope you caught that last part, make the effort to be involved. Calendar for August Aug 3rd Beer, Blues & BBQ at the State, $15, all-ages
