EDITOR’S

Greetings Modesto Fans: February is here. Love and Romance are in the air. Being in a relationship with the city you live in is like being in a relationship with a person. You overlook the shortcomings and focus on the good, the unique, the special, the interesting. This is the most introspective time of the year when all of the hysteria of the New Year is over, the resolutions may become more challenging and you start to think about what you want to do. You wonder what can you accomplish this year and really try to find a way to be happy and to make your family and community happy to. It is said that Valentine’s Day is just a marketing gimmick for the flower and card people, but I disagree. I think we all need reminders to stop and take time to look at the good in people and in our lives? Those little heart? Everyone has a message that cause you to think. Text me? <3 Ur Mine, all little reminders about what is important in our own worlds. I am so lucky to have such an amazing family and I am so very proud of my girls. I try to tell them that as much as possible and twice as much on Valentine’s Day. It seems I am on the go all the time and I really need those little reminders to appreciate the world and the people around me. The more I travel and the more places I visit, I realized all that we have here and how good we can make it. We have the basics. What are we going to do? We have so many great bands and this means we need lots of places to play and have them heard. We have talented artists so we need galleries and showings. We have fantastic volunteers and that means we need to sign up and get involved to support our causes. We have a downtown with so many possibilities so we need to make sure we visit, and enjoy and support the local businesses that give us so much flavor and character. We have such a great opportunity to make some really huge moves in 2013. It only works if we dive in and make it happen. I want to thank every one who reads ModestoView as you are the people that make our city different. I want to thank our advertisers, as you allow us to spread 100% good news 100% of the time 24/7/365. February 2013

by ModestoFamous/Ruben Porras Well

January sure has been interesting! My girlfriend moved in and turned my funky little downtown apartment into some sort of hippie love palace and that has taken some getting used to but I am ok. It turns out that life is way better with her here in Modesto. It seems like she had been carrying a big part of my heart with her. It’s nice to have it back! So, February is already here and that seems rather quick, right? We went from seeing millions of plastic Christmas decor items on shelves to being inundated by red and pink. I’m not a big fan of pink but based on the fact that my girlfriend is, I’ll be the guy fighting the crowds for last-minute gifts. I have no idea what to buy her. She probably wouldn’t appreciate the same Valentine’s Day gifts that I would. You know - Tacos, coffee and sushi. I’m a pretty simple (and apparently hungry) guy. To help out some lucky guy in Modesto, The ViewCrew has worked hard with a few local businesses to build a killer prize package that will make one lucky wife or girlfriend very happy. She might look at our lucky winner like he is Frank Sinatra (without the Mafia ties of course) and she might even fall in love with him all over again. Maybe someone will use the opportunity to get engaged. That would be cool. That would be a great story for our readers to enjoy! Dig around in this issue a bit. It is jampacked with all sorts of useful local information. We have details on where you can eat and drink, where you can dance and even where you can get in shape. That’s just how we do what we do I suppose. We are here because we care about you. Hey! Maybe you should be buying us Valentine’s Day gifts! There is one local business that I really would like to mention this month and that is ClimaX Bar and Nightclub. We have been checking this cool place out lately and have really enjoyed it. It is one of those places that you have to see to believe. When I first

It is so great to have Ruben Porras as a ModestoViewCrew leader. His never ending energy for our city is there through his health ups and downs and I am really proud he is a friend and our intrepid Senior Editor. Thanks Ruben.

My lovely date, Dawn Quinn and I enjoy Bridal Couture Magazine’s Unveiled 2013 runway show and fundraising gala. went there I felt like I was in the wrong city for a minute. Imagine the sexiest and hippest club in NYC or Los Angeles and that might give you an idea what you will find at ClimaX. I love the wall of shag carpet and wall of mirrors. I also love free WiFi and charging outlets at every seat at the bar. Very thoughtful! Very cool! Nerd heaven! Have a great month in Modesto. Support the State Theatre’s great new local music series, take the time to eat somewhere new that you have never been to and/or walk hand-in-hand through downtown with your Valentine and tour the McHenry Mansion and McHenry Museum. love with your city while you fall in love. That sounds like a solid plan! I better get started on my next project and end this for now. You will be hearing from me all month via social media and you can always reach out to me with questions, comments or concerns. Find me at twitter.com/ModestoFamous or email me at r.porras@me.com. You can also learn more me and why I do what I do in an article that the Central Valley Business Journal just published online at http://tinyurl.com/ModestoFamous. It was very nice of them to feature me. Thanks to their writer, Elizabeth Stevens. She made me look as though I know what I’m doing!

Kaeparnickmania! Yes it is happening to Modesto USA. We are on a roll! George Lucas, Grandaddy, Brett Dennen, Tim Olyphant, Robert Ulrich, Jeremy Renner and now Colin Kaepernick. Sure he is from Turlock, but ModestoView has always looked at the “greater Modesto area” for our greatness. Every city has its junk, but it is what you do with your greatness that makes a difference. When there are cakes with biceps on them and number 7 becomes our lucky number, it really doesn’t matter what happens in the Super Bowl, there is a new champion that calls our area home. Congrats Colin and the Kaeparnick family. Good Day Sacramento’s and Feb ModestoView Cover star Alan Sanchez prepares to enjoy some celebrity cake from the now nationally famous Village Baking. This cake was featured by ESPN!

We Love Local Art

We love local art…. ….but if you were out for Art Walk, attendance was a bit down in most venues due to the chill. There was a crowd for the Young Masters Show, which continues on until the February 9th reception and awards ceremony at Mistlin Gallery. I did beat the chill with a stop at The Serrano Social Club, where Tony blessed me with a cup of Joe for my stop for the show there. After Art in a Coffee House, I dropped in on the opening of the Art of Tea at the Chartreuse Muse, which will continue this month and March, complete with a Tea Ceremony. If you get your Modesto View at publication time, drop in on the Artists at the Muse, February 2. The Building Imagination Center will be hosting the Runnells Brothers Tenacious Dreams film festival February 2, with the first series showing at noon, and second at 6pm. That same day, I drive to Delicato Vineyards in Manteca to pick up a Third place award for a watercolor. The following week is entry and receiving for the Tracy Art League annual “Expressions” show. February 12, the Central California Art Association new “Almond Blossoms” members show will open at Mistlin Gallery. This show will be paired with a trio of featured pastel artists. Music will be paired up with the visual arts, in a dramatic arts setting, when Acoustic Rock Society presents three dates of Art and Music Expo, featuring local musicians and visual artists at the Center Stage Conservatory lower level studio at 11th and J Streets. Dates are February 16 and 23, and March 2, with visual artists Jen Coffey, Mark Holden, Jim Christiansen and henna artist Kristy Tribuzio with other guests. The Stanislaus Artists Open Studio maps will be available at the March 2 event. Jen Coffey and Jim Christiansen are among the 59 artists who will have studios open during the April 6 and 7 weekend, and preview show at Gallo Center, April 4. Artist Open Studio maps are $10. Tickets for the Acoustic Rock Society event is $5. Modesto Sound’s Brenda Francis is now marketing her new “Scarf gems” line. See her link at http://scarfgems.com There

will be the awards showcase February 10 for the “Home of American Grafitti” kids poster contest at American Tire Depot on McHenry Avenue, 10 am to 3 pm. Modesto Junior College’s Art Gallery is features Jerry Reilly: A Retrospective – Evolution of an Impressionist Figure Painter thru Valentine’s Day. Check in at the East Campus gallery for hours. For some interesting student works, check out the photography exhibits in various buildings on East and West Campus. This was brought to my attention by a current student. When I’m out at Art Walk, I usually stop in at the CSU Stanislaus student run Gallery 909, but I am reminded they have a gallery on campus in Turlock that puts on some outstanding shows. An interesting Downtown business note, Artist/Picasso’s owner Jordi Camps art featured over at Barkin Dog Grill. Catch a show a Prospect Theater Project on Scenic Drive, and see my art up in the lobby. Feb 9th is Shades of Pink show and Go Red for Women’s Heart month at Peer Recovery Gallery at 13th and J.

Pinky Drinks

By Kate Serpa Photos by Philip Johnson

Nothing says pink, warm, and sticky quite like venereal disease, except for possibly Valentine’s Day. My original theme for February’s bar article was going to be “Love Drips”, but that afforded me more disgusting pun-ammo that was really appropriate for a segment on amore. On a related note, Valentine’s Day is by far my favorite holiday (although I’m really not sure why), so I decided to drag poor Phil to the places I would most want to go on V-Day. And thus, in the spirit of the Hallmark holiday of love, Phil and I ventured around downtown Modesto to find you, attractive reader, beautiful love-day cocktails-- pinky drinks! So come with Phil and I on a magical downtown Modesto tunnel of drinking love in our pinkie-drink boozy valentine to you. Awww <3!

3rd Stop- Tresetti’s World Caffé “Pomegranate of My Eye”

2nd Stop- Fuzio Universal Bistro “Cherry Lemon Drop”

1st Stop- Minnie’s “Jerk”

When I think of pink Modesto cocktails, the Minnie’s Jerk is obviously crown jewel of that list. I make it no secret that Minnie’s is my favorite Modesto bar, and that is due to the fact that Diane Marceuerquiaga is my favorite bartender. You and I both know that I cannot give you the Jerk recipe due to its’ top-secret confidential ingredient (moonshine), but I can tell you Jerk-virgins out there that there’s a dangerous injection of 151 in the straw waiting to pounce on you after your first sip. If you’re feeling extra feisty, have Diane make you a “Jerk-Off ” which serves you a doubledose of the sweet nectar. Enter your own Jerk-Off/Valentine’s Day joke here.

Having a bar adjacent to a movie theatre is one of life’s beautiful combinations. Other beautiful combinations include: coffee and cigarettes, summertime and mojitos, controversy and competitive bicycling, Sinatra and slow dancing, and the lovely Jessica Hailey and a Fuzio’s Cherry Lemon Drop. -1 1/2 oz. Cold House Cherry Vodka - 1/2 squeezed lemon - 1/2 oz. Triple Sec -Splash of lemonade -Drizzle of Maraschino Cherry Juice -Shake and strain into a sugar-rimmed chilled martini glass. I have had nothing but excellent times at Fuzio’s, and that is probably due to the fact Jessica is behind the one making me drinks every time I’ve been. Not only is Fuzio pouring out from a full bar, they also offer live music and movie ticket discounts with dinner purchases. Pretty much a fantastic date spot, people, and I did all of the scouting work for you.

Tresetti’s is one of my favorite haunts, and that is completely due to the amazing staff that works there. Lately, I’ve been borderline stalking Greg Stephens because not only does he have excellent taste in music, he also serves up a most excellent Old Fashioned. Greg made this pomegranate-based martini just for this pinky-drink feature. He did it because he loves me! … or that’s just what I keep telling myself. -2 1/2 oz. Pomegranate Vodka -1 oz. Pomegranate Liqueur - 1/2 oz. Cranberry Juice -Fresh Lemon Juice -Shake and strain into a chilled sugar-rimmed martini glass. So this drink is a bit like love, people-- bit sweet, a bit sour, and may result in legal action if you suck down too much of it at once. It just depends how you prefer your love/ liquor.

Happy Valentine’s Day!

Dana, the Burger, & the Band!

It was a Thursday, as soon as I entered the Barkin’ Dog Grill in downtown Modesto on 11th St. I’m not exactly sure why… but I was reminded of that cool old jam by Shirley Bassey, Hey Big Spender! “The minute you walked in the joint!” Sassyclassy, just like the ambiance you immediately feel facing the 1946 brick wall reflecting off the sparkling chandeliers suspended from the ceiling. Oh yeah, there was a jazz band playing and a Dana~licious fave in the air as the beef was grilling! Owners, Hannibal and Evin Yadegar opened this NYC/Chicago cozy feel restaurant 9 years ago. Hannibal prides the restaurant’s success to the quality of ingredients and the loyal (addicted, ha ha!) customers who keep coming back along with more friends! Hannibal and Evin have a 5 year old son named Atanous David, who also enjoys being around the family business. Hannibal told me he plans on being there for a long time. His love for the patrons is equal to what many of them express to him. Evin works at Delta College as a costume and set designers in the theatrical department. Evin was the one who found the brick wall hiding behind the dull plaster wall that encouraged them to buy this eclectic place. Evin also gets for the credit for creating the swanky interior design. A real feel good atmosphere! So you must be wondering what’s on the menu at a place called the Barkin’ Dog Grill. The name actually aspired from a beloved dog that has since passed, who was quite a barker! Yep, from naked dogs to Chicago style hot dogs, Philly cheeses-

teaks, creamy tomato basil soup, rings, & fries, yes there is much more! Two dinner entrees, New York strip or seared salmon served with garlic mashed potatoes, and pesto spinach. See the full wine list that pairs well with that. But for me, I was torn between 2 different burgers and the magnificent thick milkshake! The first burger was the gorgonzola bleu. The organic beef, grass fed, (no hormones & no antibiotics) grilled to perfection mingled in my mouth with the rich cheese, as they so complimented each other! Then, that Hannibal realized I too am a lamb lover! So of course, I caved in and also tried the Mediterranean lamb burger that was off the hook with Dana~licious flavors! Just Wow! Thrilled to know Hannibal chooses not to use any trans-fat when it comes to his tasty menu. Ask about the veggie burger, too. Thursday night is open microphone night at the Barkin’ Dog Grill where the musicians are patrons, and the patrons are musicians, lead by ace keyboardist Dave Dow! Check the online schedule or call as there is live music at least 3 nights a week! During my extended visit I enjoyed the enthusiastic feedback from some regular customers like Francie and Jack Jorgensen of Modesto for over 40 years, as they proudly watched their grandson playing the drums while they dined. I chatted with a coupled of teenagers who love the whole experience of live music and great food while they didn’t need to be 21 to get in. I also met another regular, Debbie Frederickson who

BUFFALO CHICKEN SAUCE

comes in from Hughson to enjoy the menu, the music, and she said she usual ends up joined with new and old friends that make a delightful night out. Modesto View’s signature question: Beatles or Stones? I could see Hannibal was quite reluctant to answer as he has a devotion to many genres of music as he conceded he likes them both. I regretfully pushed him to answer again and he finally said The Beatles. Hmmm I really pegged him to say the Rolling Stones! I do so look forward to repeat the Dana~licious and entertaining experience with my own family and friends! Hope to see you all there!

John Black has been a part of the cultural and the social services community in Modesto for years. Back in the early days of ModestoView, John, “J.B.” as we all know him, was reaching out and communicating the need and the value of supporting mental health issues and getting the community involved as part of NAMI (National Alliance on Mental Illness) and the recovering community. At the same time, JB was creating many of the big blues events, including the Modesto Blues Festival, and even arranged the legendary Joe Willie “Pinetop” Perkins to play here shortly before he passed away in 2011. In his current project, JB combines his many passions with his deep desire help our community learn about each other and support each other. JB was born in Sacramento, CA, September 30, 1953 and he is married to Linda Hornsby-Black. His daytime job is with Stanislaus County Behavioral Health and Recovery Services Let’s get to know more about the MAN, John Black ModestoView: What gave you the drive and inspiration to tackle so many of these mental health and recovery issues? John Black: Never once did I think to myself as a kid or as a young man growing up in Modesto that I would have found my “place in the community” as a result of my most horrific life experience. The long road of reconstruction filled with heartache and feelings of uselessness has now subsided. Through my life experiences I have become a better man. My example of strong recovery and perseverance has set the tone for others who may struggle on their respective paths to freedom. My life is full of passion and through my production company, JB presents, we have raised thousands of dollars for charity. Now our award-winning, nationally recognized Peer Recovery Art Project is thriving as a community arts organization to serve as a bridge for “my people” to become part of their community. MV: With the recent shooting in Newtown, CT, there has been a renewed focus on the need of comprehensive mental health assistance and reform. What do you think needs to be done in our com-

12

John Black – Peer Recovery Center munity to make a significant change? JB: It’s a tragedy, what happened in Newtown. There are no simple solutions. My heart goes out to the members of that community. The political debate is on and you can catch it live most any time on CNN or FOX news. But here in the place we call home, Modesto, and in our surrounding communities, I think we can make a difference by looking at our role as citizens. Educate yourself on the facts about mental health issues, know the early signs, and speak freely with teachers, peers in the workplace, and with community partners and friends. Children, youth, adults, and we older adults are all at risk for an emotional interruption of some magnitude. Take the stigma and shame out of the equation, it a reality! Remember that mental and emotional wellbeing do not come from a government mandate. Emotional health is essential for a well-balanced community. Government interventions will always fall short. Solutions for much of our community’s emotional health and wellbeing will come from within our community. MV: What are some of the issues that you yourself struggle with when working with these different groups? JB: I have such distaste for stories that focus on the struggles of any particular group or, in fact, even suggest that a struggle exists across one group or the other. I like to come at it from this approach. Each and every person is “gifted“ in areas that may be overlooked because of the stigma associated with his or her outward appearance, behavior or general group classification. Gifts shared freely - that’s what it’s all about. I’ve been blessed by these “groups” of people, not unlike myself, who have talent and determination beyond my wildest imagination. Support from those folks in our mutual aide network has become our signature model and is responsible for maintaining my own emotional health and wellness. MV: One of the key issues with mental health issues is to make sure that people feel like they are part of a larger community. How does the Peer Recovery Art gal-

lery help with that goal? JB: Everyone is welcome at our gallery. We have all types of people in the community joining in this innovative experiment. For instance, if you had bipolar disorder, or major depression, maybe lost your loved one, separated from a spouse or lack meaningful employment, you could find yourself in a state of grieving. You might be attracted to our gallery setting for its convenient location or its welcoming décor and atmosphere. Or maybe you just wander by and find yourself in the mix. It’s not stigmatizing because you are not coming in with any type of label; you are there for the arts. Once inside you may find release from all that tension in your neck, your thoughts (racing) might slow down and you could find yourself laughing or singing along with JB and his wife our musical friends. You might be really creative and begin to generate art again and We have those artists but we also build build art-related social connections. Our welcoming atmosphere where new, even gallery is not the high society fine arts type. experimental, artists can show their work. No rejection, period! People need other people! Art is cool, music is fun, but, ah, yes, the people you meet and make friends with are priceless. See how it works? Positive role models and the opportunity to be creative inside a social setting. Many believe the cure for loneliness is isolation. But we say friends are the best medicine. MV: How did you create the Peer Recovery Gallery? JB: Our gallery is funded through Prop 63, the Mental Health Services Act Innovation component. After a competitive process, were awarded a three-year contract and approved by Stanislaus County Board of Supervisors and Behavioral health and Recovery Services. Peer Recovery Art Project’s Arts for Freedom program was born. Arts for Freedom, adopts elements from outside the mental health system and introduces new approaches not applied before in Stanislaus County. Arts for Freedom honors a more holistic approach to well-being, strengthens developmental assets to help participants thrive under stressful life circumstances, and welcomes participation by those struggling with cooccurring issues related to substance abuse and mental illness, but Arts for Freedom does not focus on mental illness .

“The Acts of Love” by Ken White To learn more about Ken White: www.linkedin.com/in/ kenwhitewriter

“It’s a young world When you’re in love, you’re in a young world.” – Young World, Written by Jerry Fuller, Performed by Ricky Nelson First Love is confusing and exciting. Her name was Jill. We were classmates at Grace M. Davis High School. We spent most of the year together. Passing notes, decorating floats, eating lunch, going to games, hanging out at her house. We went to the Christmas formal. I remember smelling her perfume on my sweater during class. It made it hard to concentrate. All I wanted to do was be next to her. My priorities suddenly changed. Family and friends and Babe Ruth baseball faded away. Young Love is gut-wrenching and heartburning. Her name was Kelly. We were undergrads at UC Davis. I met her in Madrid while I was traveling and she was a foreign exchange student. She was the younger sister of an high school buddy. We spent all my time in Spain together and carried on when we both returned to California. Going to movies, doing videos for a class project, riding bikes, studying, hanging out at her apartment. She was in love with someone else. All I wanted to do was hear her laugh. Priorities shifted. Family and friends and intramural softball were set aside. “Remember once before Hearin’ the old folks say Love’s an ageless old rhyme But now a days you know The sayin’ depends so much on The kind of woman that you find.” – Kind Woman, Written by Richie Furay, Performed by Buffalo Springfield

Good love gone bad is sad. Her name was Angela. We grew up blocks from each other. She was the younger sister of a girl I’d known since elementary school. We reconnected in college, courted, married, and moved to San Francisco then Honolulu. We spent a lifetime alone together. Dancing at clubs, working and acting out, chasing money, partying, hanging out at the beach. All I wanted to do was get away from her. Our priorities fell apart. Family and friends and city softball got lost in the shuffle. Enduring love is comforting and reassuring. Her name is Rory. We were both divorced and had returned home to Modesto. She was the younger sister of one of my best friends. I obviously have a thing about younger sisters. She had two sons, I had no children. We spent time together. Then we moved in together. Then we married. Travelling, raising her children, taking classes, volunteering, hanging out at home. All I wanted to do was be alone with her. Priorities transformed. Family and friends and senior softball were welcome again. The many acts of love. It’s a wonderful feeling. It’s a confusing feeling. It’s a hollow feeling. It’s a contented feeling. I hope I always feel that way. “At last My love has come along My lonely days are over And life is like a song.” – At Last, Written by Mark Gordon and Harry Warren, Performed by Etta James

Romance is the key feature in this issue of ModestoView and our goal is to help you find a bit of it right here in the city we call home. You may think that Modesto lacks that certain romantic flair of bigger cities, but if you take the time to think outside of the box a bit, you may just realize that you can both fall in love and celebrate love here. Keep this list handy for the next time you plan a date night. The State Theatre - Enjoy a film while holding hands in the balcony. While you are there enjoy a glass of wine or a cocktail and a bit of old-fashioned popcorn served with real butter. The State has the power to wrap guests in a special sense of nostalgia that in turn has the power to create the feel of romance. Take a walk about town - Enjoy a walk around downtown and take in the sites. You might just find that the property around the McHenry Mansion (especially in Spring) is a great place to sneak a quick kiss in the midst of beautiful flowers. Other beautiful romantic walk destinations include the clock and fountains at Modesto Centre Plaza, the Modesto Arch at night and 10th Street Plaza where shimmering lights make the trees glow under starry skies. Camp 4 Restaurant - There are many beautiful and romantic restaurants in town but this one in particular makes our list because of a special dessert that they offer that is perfect to share. Enjoy Camp 4’s decadent Chocolate Panini accompanied by a special selection from one of Modesto’s longest wine lists or with a French press of delicious gourmet coffee. Find love in your own neighborhood - There are so many beautiful neighborhoods in Modesto. Take a stroll with your special someone and enjoy the cute cottage and Victorian gingerbread-style homes near the college or all of the trees that make the La Loma neighborhood so beautiful. We are lucky to be surrounded by vintage architecture and plenty of trees and flowers in Modesto. The trees in the Fall are especially beautiful. Bring back the spirit of your youth at any age and engage in a playful leaf fight. End the fight with the realization that love can be found at any age. That is always a beautiful realization! The Gallo Center for the Arts - Let the venue do the work for you. Operas, ballets, concerts and theatrical performances are often produced with romance in mind. Take in a show together and get lost in the moment. You won’t want to leave. We never do. Tresetti’s Patio - Sit in the winter and enjoy music by artists such as LoveCore Singing Telegrams and Francesca Bavaro. These and other artists bring the patio to life and create the feel of warmth and passion on even the coldest of nights. Tresetti’s makes amazing cocktails that add to the overall romantic feel of a date night there. This is a true Modesto classic. Special mentions- Planning a first date? Skip the movies and take the chance to talk and enjoy the company of your date. Create a fun mood over coffee at Serrano Social Club, share a root beer float served in an icy glass at A & W or order a massive banana split and a pair of spoons at Loard’s or The Ice Cream Co. If that first date goes well, remember the date and the place and return to take a knee and make that special person with you the special person that you choose to share your life with.

Never Forget Your Roots Finding the roots of what they call

her, the “Queen of Rockabilly”. Wanda Jackson was born in Oklahoma. Wanda’s father Tom was a country singer and he decided to quit singing due to the Great Depression. That journey took them to California. In this transition, Wanda’s dad bought her a guitar and gave her lessons as well as encouraging her to play the piano as they worked up and down the valley. In 1952 Wanda and her family moved back to Oklahoma City, at twelve years old Wanda won a local talent contest. Winning the contest gave Wanda the privilege to appear on KLPR which took her through her high school days. At this point in Wanda’s life, she had recorded several songs with the Brazos Valley Boys. The song “You Can’t Have My Love” became a top hit in the nation. Wanda’s career started to flourish. After finishing high school, Wanda took to the road and her father Tom became her road manager and her mother became her designer dressing her in glitz and glamourlong earrings, fringed dresses and high heels. What a statement that brought to the country stage. When Wanda first started touring in the late 1950’s around 55/56, she got to play on the same stage as Elvis Presley, an he encouraged Wanda to play Rockabilly. In 1958, Wanda had her first rockabilly hit “Fujiyama Mama”. This became number one in Japan. In 1960 Wanda covered “Let’s Have a Party”, on the Top 40 which Elvis released three years prior. With an unsurprising success Capitol Records decided to

release some of Wanda’s albums she composed with her 1950’s material. When 1963 came along Wanda released and recorded her final album “Two Sides of Wanda”. A bit country and rockn-roll, which then lead Wanda to her very first Grammy nomination for Best Female Country Vocal Performance. Within the next couple of years, 1965 to be a bit more accurate, when rockabilly began declining, Wanda decided to turn back the country route. 1970 Wanda took a different route in music. Her children convinced her to start attending church. Shortly after Wanda started writing and recording gospel. Capitol Records soon dropped Wanda and the religious labels weren’t interested either. Europe seems the place to go next on her musical career. In the 1980’s Wanda went overseas and started playing rockabilly again. That’s where she released another album “Rockabilly Fever!” Her first after rock-n-roll album in twenty years. This brings us closer to 2013. Wanda Jackson released a compilation album 16 tracks I do believe, where such artist as The Cramps and Elvis Costello appeared. My most favorite reading of Wanda Jackson is her collaborating with Jack White of the White Stripes to record “The Party Ain’t Over” in 2011. Wanda is still releasing albums,” Unfinished Business” hit the market in 2012 so look for it! I believe you can never forget your roots!

By Chris Murphy If Downtown Modesto has true champions,

“ Los reales Del Norte”

Mexican regional band appears on national Spanish television” El Gordo Y La Flaca” In the early 2000’s The Urban ran an article on the Banda in a Spanish edition! Since then they have toured across the country performing on stage in front of thousands. Stay tuned for a Special addition to my March article on where are they now with their new direction & the bands newest lead singer!

it must surely be Mitch and Tammy Maisetti. If you remember back in the day, no 10th St Place, no Fat Cat, a closed Vintage, abandoned Fable Room, empty storefronts, a State Theatre that was rebuilding and in the middle of all of this, Tresetti’s came to be. In 1994 upscale 1st Class dining returned downtown created by the Maisettis and Paul Tremayne. Mitch and Tammy have always had a passion and excitement for Downtown Modesto, creating and hosting events, opening Jax, donating their bar and restaurant for non-profits and always there to give back to Modesto and even to New Orleans after Katrina. Mitch always has a smile for everyone and has made me feel welcome and special at every event or meal I have ever been to. Modesto should be ever grateful to Mitch and Tammy for jumpstarting our modern day downtown and everyone should stop by and say Hi, enjoy a meal, a conversation and some great hospitality. We love you Mitch! Chris and the ModestoViewCrew. www.tresetti.com

Happy February Everyone!

M

By Abbey Murphy So here are my five tips to make your loved one smile this February 14th! 1. Take them on a picnic! Make their favorite foods and pack a great lunch and head out to a local park, like Graceada! 2. I know it sounds hard to do or too simple, but a handmade card really means the world. Seeing someone try to make you something from the heart really is the best. (This is my favorite since my boyfriend did this last year and I still have it hanging on the wall of my room!) 3. Do you have a instrument laying around the house that you’ve looked at for years, but never really picked up or tried to learn? Well, go pick it up! Whether it’s a piano, guitar, ukulele, or even an xylophone, learning a quick love song on an instrument and performing or recording it for your significant other will sure to make their heart melt!

4. Cupcakes are all the rage right now and I am in full support of this trend. Seriously, I’m obsessed with these lil cakes. Many give the gift of chocolate for Valentine’s Day, which is awesome, but what if you gave them chocolate in the form of a decadent cake?! Go track down The Cupcake Lady, who posts her locations on Facebook, or head out to Frost Bakery, I guarantee it will bring a smile. 5. Jewelry, yes, jewelry. Too expensive? Nope! Head down to the Bead Shop on J Street and get some expert advice from the Bead Lady and learn how to make a beautiful bracelet, anklet, necklace or key chain with all hand picked beads! This is one of the best places in Modesto and you won’t be able to leave the shop without feeling like it’s going to be a great day! Happy February!!

“Jill and Nic’s Infinite (local) Playlist” By Jill Ferris

Happy February to everyone! Hope you are having a wonderful start to 2013. I know I am! First off I would like to share some exciting news. I am now working with Modesto’s newest club, Sand Bar. It’s located in downtown Modesto, at 927 10th St. (old Copper Rhino building). The venue has a really cool vibe, much brighter and the drinks are a bit cheaper (always a good thing!). I have a lot of really cool live music coming up there. I mentioned some below but the easiest way to keep up is to add me on facebook (www.facebook.com/jillferrisbooking) and check the ModestoView Calendar. As you can probably tell this article is a bit different than what it has been in the past. Everyone meet Nic Padilla of Nic Padilla Promotions (www.facebook.com/nic.padilla.promotions). He works a lot with hard rock and metal bands. In the light of not being biased to the genres I mainly work with, I felt that we could cover Modesto’s wide range of talented people together! So lets get down to the music…. Enjoy!! Insideout – Reggae – “Irie” A fairly new band but you wouldn’t know it by watching them on stage! Their front man, Kaleo Rodrigues, grew up in Hawaii around some of the best reggae music in the world. When his family relocated to Turlock California he met his band mates while playing on the football team for Pitman High. They recently have been making quite a splash in the Modesto music scene. In the past couple of months they have shared stage with many of our favorite locals and even national acts Fortunate Youth and Authority Zero. Definitely a band to keep your eye on. Put on your dancing shoes and catch their next show Feb 16th at Sand Bar (927 10th St, Modesto) with Hawaiian legends Natty Vibe! Table for Five – Pop/Alt – “Gimme somethin’” This five piece band is another fairly new one, they formed in 2011 after splitting from another local band “Gentle Stranger.” They have a vague sound resemblance of Kings of Leon. Their upbeat alternative sound is unlike anything in the valley at this time. Like Insideout they might be new but definitely nothing to scoff at just

22

high energy bass skills. By the end of their set you’ll be addicted. Check them out on Facebook at www.facebook.com/mydirtyaddiction

this last November they won the Gorilla Music Battle of the Bands in San Francisco! Check them out online but my advice would be to find their next local show and hear them live! Check them out on Facebook http://www. facebook.com/Table45 Muir- Indie/Rock- “Ground Fascination” Formed by singer/guitarist Oscar Barajas. He describes their songwriting and sound process as “I bring the bones and the guys bring the meat.” In my opinion however they get their very eclectic sound its definitely working! They are influenced by many different bands anywhere from Radiohead and The Shins to Jimi Hendrix. They have a very powerful live show, the kind that can only be accomplished by having extremely talented musicians. Muir definitely has a very bright future, come see them while you still can right here in our little town! Check them out on Facebook http://www. facebook.com/MuirBand

California Medication - Hard Rock/Alternative/Punk – “Headless Horseman” Cali Med is a talented 4 piece rock band unlike anyone else in the Central Valley. They have a versatile sound, and have been described as “an excellent progressive rock band with a lot of energy.” They are able to play with bands of all genres, and have shared the stage with Pounders, Burn Halo, Motograter, Prong, Green Jelly, and many more. They have competed in, and won, several Battles of the Bands, and have been nominated for a MAMA (Modesto Area Music Award) three years in a row. They bring a ton of fire and intensity to the stage and are famously known for their half-naked bass player, Wristband Scott. I’m proud to work with them on shows, and look forward to big things this year! Check them out on Facebook at www.facebook.com/californiamedication

My Dirty Addiction – Rock – “Sex, Drugs, Rock & Roll” This five piece rock band comes to us from Stockton, CA. Their sound has a classic rock throwback feel. They would be able to share the stage with 80’s and 90’s rockers, as well as some of today’s best rock bands. I’ve been working with them for six months, but they have been rocking the central valley for the past couple years. They are some of the coolest guys around, and just released their first self-titled EP. They are a ton of fun to watch live, they bring lots of power and excitement to the stage. Catch them at a show and check out Drew’s Animal-like drumming and Skipp’s

Eroszion – Hard Rock – “Bruised & Battered” Manteca based rock band Eroszion has been rocking the central valley for the past couple years. They are a six piece band, determined to do big things this year. They just shared the stage with classic rockers Y&T at Fat Cat in Jan. They’ve got a great sound, and can easily share the stage with classic rock and heavy metal bands. They’ve got a cd coming out soon; it will include the two songs that were played on the Rock 96.7 battle of the bands. Their next show is Feb 2nd, 209 Productions New Metal Showcase at The Workshop in Ceres, CA. Check them out on Facebook at www.facebook.com/eroszion

TOURING BAND ALERT!!! Brewfish – Reggae/Dub/Rock – Ay Carumba Hailing from Long Beach California is the power trio known as Brewfish. Blending their unique sounds of rock, dub, reggae and dancehall beats they are definitely unlike any band I have ever heard! They have no trouble getting any kind of music fan up on their feet and dancing. After dropping their first full length album “20,000 DEEP” in May of 2012 on Dub City Music Label they have toured nationally and have played along with popular bands such as Tribal Seeds, Passafire, Stick Figure and more. These guys are definitely on their way up! Come catch them in an intimate venue while you still can! Feb 7th they hit Sand Bar (927 10th St downtown Modesto). TOURING BAND ALERT!! The Phoenix Twin – Alternative/Folk/ Punk – “Heavy Before Noon” This bay area based band started a few years ago when Benjy and Craig met at the University of Maryland. After college they played regularly all over the east coast. They’ve been in the San Jose area a little over a year, and have been playing all over SF and the East Bay. Their sound can be described as punk, folk, alternative, indie and acoustic. Benjy and Craig have been buskers (street performers) in NY and the bay area, and are featured in a movie about buskers made by an independent NY filmmaker. They were co-organizers of the SF Underground Music Festival last fall, and have big plans for 2013. You can catch them next at Johnny V’s in San Jose on Feb 2nd, and at Yosemite Lanes in Modesto on Feb 9th. Check them out on Facebook at www.facebook.com/thephoenixtwin For either the Brewfish show on Feb 7th at Sand Bar or The Phoenix Twins show Feb 9th at Yosemite Lanes bring your copy of this article and get in half off! If you are a band and would like to get booked (not just at the above mentioned venues) feel free to email Jill at jillferrisb93@gmail.com or Nic for rock/metal at nicp.promotions@gmail.com … we would be happy to take a listen to your music and either book you or put you in touch with other booker/promoters that might have something sooner than us! Thank you for reading!!

FIT M

By Efren Martinez Fitness Event For February

It’s February, and by now you’re going full throttle with your healthy lifestyle New Year’s resolutions; or your not. Lets face it, it’s not easy when it comes to giving up those late night munchies, snacking on ice cream during family movie night or even passing up some of those delicious dishes at our many fine Modesto Restaurants. If any of your fitness and eating habit resolutions have been broken you’re not alone. We all slip off the fitness wagon from time to time and according to my friend Monique Pitts, beating yourself up for it doesn’t help. But what does help is getting back on the fitness track. She’s 100% right. The goal for most isn’t to look like an airbrushed supermodel, but more to live a healthy life through mind, body and soul. Rest assured, your accomplishments in fitness will come daily as you continue to practice living a healthy lifestyle. When I look at the before and after photos here of my friend Monique, I am amazed at how wonderfully happy she looks after dropping 170lbs. Honestly, when I first met Monique I was delighted by her persona and never saw her as being overweight. She’s my friend, and in the words of my mother, “Those who love you will never see you as being heavy or thin, they will just love you for nothing more than being you” I guess that can work both ways, thanks Mom. I was totally surprised when Monique told me that back in 2009 she weighed in at 365lbs. As a person who

has walked on both sides of the track of being heavy and thin, I was very interested in hearing how she lost all that weight and what inspired her. Monique shared with me that since the first day of her employment at Brenda Athletic Clubs she noticed a pattern with their members that they were healthy, happy and full of life through fitness. As time went on, she grew closer to the members and decided that she too would make a change for herself and her children. Since that day, she has shed over 170lbs. It took her 2.5 years to get there, but she delightfully told me that the pounds still keep coming off. For Monique, working at a fitness gym not only helped her to put food on her family table but also to take advantage of her surroundings. It wasn’t long before she started her own fitness routine playing tennis, exercise classes, swimming and when she wasn’t at the gym, she incorporated fitness with her kids and changed her eating habits. Today Monique feels better about herself, working out at least 5 days a week and staying active with her family by taking family walks, park trips and other healthy family outings. At the gym her fitness routine consists of cardio, resistance training and toning. Monique just doesn’t settle for solo training sessions, she feels it’s very important that she mixes it up by including group exercise classes like Zumba, Yoga, Cycling and more. In regards to her nutrition, Monique has introduced more fruits and vegetables as well as turkey, chicken and fish into her meals and eats less processed food and sugar. She also changed from being a soda drinker to crystal light and water as well as given up butter, mayo, beef and frequent fast food trips and cooks more meals at home. Although she did tell me that she does indulge every now and then but as long as she stays active, treating herself once in a while is OK. Now that’s an A+ attitude

for me Modesto View Readers. A final thought from Monique for those who might be struggling with weight loss. “Get moving! I am a full time mom of three children and work full time, I feel that you need the energy that exercise gives you to be able to be active in your children’s lives as well as being active in your own. Once you begin living a healthy lifestyle through diet and exercise you will keep going, I am now able to do so many things that I couldn’t before and never imagined that I could. It’s been very exciting to see the changes in my body as well as in my daily life, if I can do it, so can you”

The Rise of HATRIOT and the glue that keep us all together... By Mike Vanek

So this month I would like to talk about a few things... First of all there is a band making a lot of noise in the national metal community these days and they are called HATRIOT. Featuring former Exodus frontman Steve “ZETRO” Souza and his two sons Cody and Nick. Hatriot has a local Modesto connection... both of Hatriot’s guitarists hail from our fair city!! Miguel Esparza (Ex-Cadavric) & Kosta Varvatakis (Ex-Kranial Damage) round up Hatriot’s Duel guitar attack!! This band has been on fire after being signed to Massacre Records and working on their debut album due out this month. After opening for Death Angel and headlining the Fat Cat as a tune up show, Hatriot seems to have a wide-open future. The other night, Kosta pulled me aside and played me the HATRIOT album and I’ll be reviewing it upon its release but just let me tell you, this is THE best new band in metal today!! Zetro Souza sings his ass off not only live but I would say this is the best record he has made in many years, if not his best ever. The band he hand picked is a powerful juggernaut of metal madness. I highly suggest you follow this band as they just might be the next big thing, with 2 guys from OUR METAL SCENE!! Next I want to take notice of a fire being lit as of late. As old venues re-imagine themselves and exclude the local metal scene a local promoter has taken it upon himself to do something about it!! Nic Padilla Promotions has worked metal bands into his shows for moths and has convinced

24

the fine people at Yosemite lanes to have an all METAL bill and it was a GIANT success!!! A giant salute to Nic for fighting for metal and it doesn’t stop there. Bands like Nothing But Losers, Zombie Death Stench, California Medication, Galvan Eyes, Cursed, This Times Brutal, Hang The Kode, Eroszion, Aborticide, Bombs Overhead, Warpath Assassins among others have really taken the bull by the horns and have fought through things like the lack of venues willing to do metal, a bad economy, etc. They not only promote themselves but finally each other and I hope this is the beginning of something special in the MO!! There are thousands of metal heads in our fair city and I think we should all get a fair shake!! Last of all I wanna thank venues keeping metal alive in Modesto. Fat Cat as always, but you can go see 21+ shows mostly for FREE at Spinnakers and The Other Place, and now at Yosemite Lanes 300 Club and the shows there are only $2! When my band played there last year we bowled until 1am after the show!! Anyway, that’s all for me this month. As always keep one foot in the gutter and one fist in the gold!! www.facebook.com/mike.vanek

DISCIPLINE

By Mary Layton

W

hen I was young the word “discipline” had a definite unattractive ring to it. Something you are ordered to do but don’t want to do. Being a free spirit, I decided it was something to be avoided. A few years later we were doing drills in a T’ai Chi class, shifting our weight forward and back, first very slowly, then at faster speeds. I remember feeling my legs yelling out to me in pain. But we kept going on for what seemed an eternity. I kept hop-

ing the teacher would stop and give us at least a little break, but he didn’t. The whole class kept going and I realized I could not walk away or escape. Right then I had one of those ‘Aha -experiences’ : Wow, this is about disciplining my wild and lazy mind. I had never done that before and it suddenly seemed interesting to me. As my mind became more quiet, my muscles relaxed. All of a sudden I felt an enormous strength and energy I never felt before. I guess I had, thanks to my teacher, challenged what I previously thought to be my limit. Discipline had brought me to a new level and expanded my abilities. Many of us made new year’s resolutions. For those who still find it hard to really “ do it”, take that class or make that change happen, I have this advice: Just do it. And even more important, keep doing it, stay away from excuses. It will pay off big time. Looking for a class to help change your mind? Go to taichi4modesto,com or call (209) 572-4518

DOWNTOWN MODESTO

Many restaurants start serving dinner early so that you can get a nice meal in before the shows and movies that begins at 7 or 7:30.

Open Late!

Downtown Modesto is the place to be late Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights. There is live music every night of the week in one of our great clubs or restaurants. After the show, stop and enjoy a nightcap.

Parking

There are parking garages at 9th and L Street, 11th and K Street, 11th and I Street and 12th and H Street. Parking is close to all restaurants!

Try a Cab

It’s getting easier to catch a cab, bothtodowntown and home from downtown. Why deal with driving and parking? Take the easy way... Find local restaurants www.modestoview.com

Locally Owned Most all of the down restaurants are locally owned. They hire local people and the money you spend stays right here in town. Local restaurants purchase from local farmers and feature local ingredients.

Bar Bits and Bites!..

We welcome a new bar to the scene. Our friends at the MAMA Winning Random Nights have teamed up with a few friends and have opened “Level” in the former location of the Modesto Sports Bar on J St. Multi-levels, 18 and over dancing and since it is run by the good people that brought you BUMP Festival and more, the place will be excellent

Trophy Tour Giants

Have you ever wanted to see World Series Trophy up close? Well now you can. At a special event at Modesto Center Plaza on the 19th. You can touch the same trophy that was held up high by Buster, Barry, Pablo and the rest of the crew. This is a good way to start getting excited for baseball season as spring training gets going soon. Modesto Center Plaza – Feb 19 from 6 pm to 8 pm. Don’t miss out as line capacity may be reached quickly.

Ernie Bucio Scholarship Concert at Barkin Dog – Feb 24

Our community will always be grateful for the musical legacy that Ernie Bucio created with generations of new musicians for decades. You can help keep music education going by supporting the Ernie Bucio Scholarship Fund. It will be like the one Chris Convery organized shortly after Ernie passed away last year and will start at 1 pm and different bands playing until 9pm. You will totally enjoy the event and it is for a great cause.

Downtown Hospitality Program

Want to help make downtown better? Want your ideas heard? Time to get involved with the Downtown Hospitality Program. The Downtown Hospitality Program was commissioned by the City Council in June of 2012 to review downtown operations and management and develop a model for its improvement. It is intended to coordinate downtown stakeholders to improve regulations, policies, programs and practices in order to make downtown more hospitable and attractive to residents, visitors, businesses and investors. To help get everyone involved, a summit meeting is being planned for the evening of Wednesday, February 27th. The summit meeting will include a presentation on the research conducted to date, recommendations for next steps and a solicitation of feedback from participants. In addition, meeting attendees will have the opportunity to connect with those already involved in the downtown hospitality program for ongoing participation. 5:30pm in the Stanislaus River Room of the Center Plaza
