Ahhh…The joys of summer of youth! Summers get shorter and shorter each year. But I remember as a kid, waiting for school to end and then waiting for school to start as the summer drew to a close. Now there is now waiting and summer happens fast. Heck, life happens fast. Soon our youngest daughter goes off to college and it just seems like yesterday they were eating ice cream in 5th grade. Our wonderful cover by Michael J Mangano really captured this. It seems like it was just yesterday kids were born, we got married, we were in grade school and just like here in Modesto USA, it seems like The Class of ’62 was not so long ago. ModestoView spent some time with George Lucas and we were very excited to hear how much growing up in Modesto meant to him. We were honored to present George with a “Legend of the Cruise” monument that will soon be in the sidewalk on 10th St. See our interview with George at www.modestoview.com Modesto was in the New York Times last month and it was all good. There we were, sharing the global stage with our most famous native son, George Lucas, as he shared his American Graffiti story. For all of you branders out there, this is who we are. Brands happen naturally. We are the home of American Graffiti, George Lucas, and the birthplace of Rockabilly and Rock and Roll. These are positive things that are loved around the world and call Modesto USA their home. People around the world are seeing us for what we are and can be. Modesto, it is up to us to tell our own positive story and make positive things happen. We need our city leaders to understand that positive civic culture leads to jobs, creativity and a solid economy. We have some transitions this month. Our All Ages editor Abbey Murphy leaves the pages of ModestoView to take on the challenge of being a student at UC Berkeley. We are lucky that we have a very talented Girl Scout that will be taking over her column that was started by Madison Murphy back in 2006. We welcome Leia Johnson to the ViewCrew and can’t wait to read about her community perspective. We are also honored to have Aaron Rowan writing the Acoustic View. He presents many events including the successful Modesto Unplugged Festival last month. We have so many talented writers and I couldn’t be more proud. ModestoView is all about taking positive action. We are sponsoring and creating some of the events and projects that are making positive change in our community like the Modesto Cruise Route, Classic Community Murals, Rockabilly History Project, The Legends of the Cruise Walk of Fame and we are sponsoring music stages and art and music projects that create civic pride. We will be presenting a Café at the Romance of Old Havana fundraiser for Boys and Girls Club. Come see us on July 27 and have a Cuba Libre! We are raising funds for MoBand, the Gallo Center, Salvation Army and so much more. We are the change that we need. If our friends in Modesto all get together to make something happen, I know there will be a good result. Our advertisers are so very important to help us produce and print the ModestoView Magazine and our readers will reach out to good businesses. Our message of good news reaches across our county and beyond and if you read ModestoView, you know who the best businesses are in town. We are more than an ad, we are a way to build Civic Pride, every day and teamwork is the key. You are all part of our ViewCrew and ModestoView is for you. Please tell us what you like and how we can make ModestoView better.

On the Cover... “The joy of summer?”

Sometimes you get a lot and sometimes you don’t. The very talented Michael J Mangano captured the summer spirit of the super cute Thomas Damrell and Sofia Johnson on an ice cream outing at Loard’s Ice Cream in Downtown Modesto. All the makings of a fun summer day are right here and we thank these kids for their time, Michael for his talent and Loard’s for the amazing ice cream.

Where were we in ‘62?..

We know where you were ‘62 and Alfred Matthews was right there at with you. During the early years of cruising, then called “dragging”, Alfred Matthews was right there on the Cruise Route at 1107 11th St. When the Cruise started out McHenry, we were right there at 724 McHenry, near all of the driveins.

This is the second time that I have written this article this month. Sometimes you need to just scrap an original thought or plan and just start over. I have a million thoughts in my head. I’ll do my best to get them out for you to digest. At this very moment I am sitting at a corner table at ClimaX Bar and Nightclub and I am situated so that I can see all of the action taking place. Tonight is a special night. This morning the Supreme Court ruled The Defense of Marriage Act unconstitutional. ClimaX is celebrating with free pizza and champagne for their patrons but there is so much more happening here under the surface. The buzz in the air is more intoxicating than the drinks being served. I am lucky enough to have an amazing life partner. She supports my crazy ideas and my adventurous efforts and she does so with a heart full of love and understanding. Nobody would think twice about her and I wrangling a whole mess of our friends and family together to watch as we join together in marriage. Until today, my gay friends in California with supportive partners like mine were told that they could not express their love for one another in the same fashion that I am free too. Today my friends and I are equal. This is America. We need to be progressive and compassionate for one another. We are promised freedom when we are born in this country. The Supreme Court did the right thing today in my opinion. People here where I am tonight are hugging and some are crying. This is beautiful. This is how life should be. June was a wild month in Modesto but that was expected with Graffiti Summer under way. It was pretty exciting to meet the man that put Modesto on the map for his positive efforts. I found George Lucas to be a peaceful and insightful man. His emotions were interesting to watch on the day that he was here. I watched him hold his sister playfully in his arms while in the midst of a group of fans. He seemed honestly humbled by the experience. He seemed real. That was very nice to see from someone of his stature.

A M E R I C A N

C I T Y

In a way I wish every month of the year could be like June in Modesto. Imagine year-round car shows, rockabilly music, tattooed beauties and cool dudes with slicked back hair. That sounds like a damn fine world to live in to me. Have some fun in the 209 this month. The Fourth of July will bring fireworks and parades but it will feel different this year. This year many of us will enjoy new freedoms. For a good time in July refer to our event calendar printed in the back of this and every issue. The State Theatre is bringing Jaws to the big screen and they will also be screening the film, “Mud” starring Matthew McConaughey and Resse Witherspoon. This film is a critical hit that could take the Oscars by storm. It is pretty cool to have a thea-

tre in town that plays indie films. It needs your support. See the State’s full schedule at thestate.org. Another event that I am excited about this month is The Romance of Old Havana on July 27th at the Martin G. Petersen Event Center. The ViewCrew will be there serving cocktails as bands play and Havana street food is served. I’ll be wearing a wild shirt and a straw fedora. For that night only, feel free to call me Cuban Ruben. I took the photos this month in Bodie, CA while on a crazy road trip that took a friend and I back in time. Take the time to check it out. Your kids will be amazed! More info: tinyurl.com/bodieinfo Have a great month. Embrace your freedoms. Experience love. Laugh with your kids. Help a neighbor.

ART

Fourth of July starts our month in Art by Jim Christiansen

Fourth of July starts our month in art with the parade, and Farmers Market with arts and crafts vendors set up out front of Gallo Center. Linda Knoll will be one of our fine art creators working a booth in what many think of when we think of Modesto, and as I write this column, Linda is up at the Sierra Eco Summit and Festival in Groveland which leads to my theme this month, artist working vacations, or shows out of town. I do them on occasion, and want Modestans to note, the local artists have the talent to show and work out of town. Last month, I took a field trip up to Sacramento for Second Saturday, the monthly arts and crafts event held on the streets and galleries around the capital city. First stop was at the Shimo Arts Center, where

friend Elizabeth Ingebretsen showing her watercolors by invitation, with Ed Bisese from Washington, D.C. and Jim Adams from Corvalis, Oregon. .Other artists stopping in from Modesto, included Jack Morris and Tricia Spenker, and Manteca artists Walt and Mary Scheinuck, who included the Crocker Art Museum on their itinerary to make Liz’s opening reception. This show runs through July 10 at 2117 28th Street. Modesto’s mayor of 11th Street, photographer Adrian Mendoza, is showing an exhibit of his aerial photographs of the California Delta, printed on textile, at the 18 Reasons Gallery on 18th Street in San Francisco. A panel discussion is scheduled July 10th. Check gallery schedule for hours at http://www.18reasons.org for hours and address. Show runs through July 30th. On the Artist of Modesto Facebook page I got notice of a kickstarter project by CSUS and Turlock based artist Julie Hawk, for her project this summer in Philadelphia. By the time I added in my ten dollars, she had already surpassed her goal. I found a class flier for “Flowers with Brush and Ink” from Barbara Gill, at Mistlin Gallery that takes place in Pacific Grove. This sampling should give you notice, many local artist also work and show out of town. Even the new multi Arts event, featuring music, dancing, and the photography of Jon Souza and David Schroeder has an out of

The focus on Art in July, is Focus on Havana, which combines Schroeder’s and Souza’s photos of Havana, with the musical production of Cuban Music by John Griswold, for a night of dancing, and fun in the Romance of Old Habana benefit fundraiser July 27. This Cuban themed party, complete with Rum, cigars, will benefit the C.L.A.S.S. program of Mistlin Gallery, and the Boys and Girls Club of Modesto. General Tickets start at $60, with $75 V.I.P. available, and group tables. Event is at 720 12th Street at the Martin G. Peterson Event Center. Shiloh is moving up to Oregon when this show complete. And there are a number of new members in the Summer Splash to expand our offerings locally. Next month we’ll note the upcoming Picasso Ceramics at Carnegie Arts Center, and Modesto Art Museum’s Architectural Festival and the Valley Art Association Carraige Show Call for Artists coming up. BAR You Can’t Get a DUI When You’re Drinking at Home

by Kate Serpa Photos by Philip Johnson

Phil and I did something different this month. We decided to stay in to create cocktails you can take out. It is a fact that I love going out to local bars and trying the new and exciting, but sometimes its nice to not wear shoes (or pants) and not have to drive, you know? Plus with this July sun/ heat/death thing going on, my pale skin and I do better with not going outside in general. Now for those of you who are the tan-type and can venture outdoors without getting fried (I hate you), the following are excellent to take to barbeques / MoBand outings/pool parties…. or whatever you and your fellow non-Irish-skinned people do outside in the summer. You jerks. So, I’ve recently started making my own limoncello -- probably one of the best and worst things I could be doing in my spare time. Although I’m being crafty and know what I’m giving everyone for Christmas, I now have access to 151 proof grain alcohol that tastes like magic. The one thing about limoncello is that you do have to wait a bit before you can drink it. The waiting is, obviously, the hardest part; so it’s best to make a lot of batches that way you have subsequent amounts to ease the time burden. Also, limoncello should be shared. No one needs that entire bottle to themselves, and won’t you look like the most sophisticated person on the block when you show up to that barbeque full of people you don’t like with a personally crafted bottle of get-drunk-delicious. Getting your five daily servings of fruit gets a whole lot easier when you add whiskey. (This approach, however, does not work in the same sense with vegetables.) And so I present to you my amazing peach whiskey sours (applause), which are good and good for you. Unlike limoncello, there is zero wait time with this one, and you can feel like a healthy, reasonable adult because you’re getting your five servings.

Limoncello Recipe Ingredients: 1 bottle Everclear Grain Alcohol, 14 lemons, 2 cups water, 2 cups sugar Week One: Carefully remove the yellow skin with a vegetable peeler (graters make it too hard to separate the peel from the finished product). Be careful not to get ANY of the white pith on the peel, because it will turn out just as bitter as you’ll be with yourself for ruining your batch. Put the peels and the entire bottle of Everclear in a glass container with an airtight lid. Hide your jar in a cool dark place where you won’t be tempted to open it. Wait a super long week. Week two: Combine your sugar and water in a saucepan and heat until the sugar is completely dissolved. Add the simple syrup to your batch and stir. Put the jar back in your hiding place and wait another super long week. Week Three: Open and enjoy. My favorite limoncello cocktail (pictured) is a big splash limoncello, a reasonable splash of heavy whipping cream, and mineral water poured over ice and stirred… so damn good.

PERFORMING A Time to Perform in July by Kaye Osborn

I absolutely love going to the theater.

I enjoy experiencing dramatic and musical productions. I try to attend some high school and college shows during the school year! Last week, I went to see the 2013 Modesto Junior College New Playfest. All six original short plays were written and performed by MJC theatre students. I was so entertained! I loved the energy from the actors, the creative scripts and the talented crew. I was drawn to the show because one of the play writers, Tyler Kelly, was an actor in Lakewood and La Loma musicals which I directed. So, if you are a theater enthusiast, please remember to support local school productions. I promise you won’t be disappointed.

PROSPECT THEATER PROJECT Short Play Festival July 12- August 4 Prospect Theater GALLO CENTER FOR THE ARTS Looking Over the President’s Shoulder July 12-14 8 PM Friday-Saturday, 2 PM Sankofa, Modesto”s new AfricanAmerican theater company presents this one-man play about Alonzo Fields, who accepted a job as a butler at the White House in 1931. Loard’s & Oodles July 2013 Chillin’ with Dana~licious!

Oodles of Modesto is nicely located on

July, it’s just another indulgent reason for me to browse Modesto in search of cool treats, sweets, and scrumptious eats! Lucky for all of us living in Modesto we don’t have to go far to satisfy our sweet spot when it comes to taste buds! Between Loard’s Ice Cream & Sandwich Shop and Oodles Frozen Yogurt Shop you may just find yourself chillin’ like me in the same gratifying Dana~licous way! Loard’s Ice Cream & Sandwich Shop is conveniently located adjacent to the Brenden Theaters in the Modesto Plaza. Dina Rivera-Ahumada and her family have been the proud owners of Loard’s for the past 5 years. Dina, her husband, son, daughter, and sister have lived in Modesto for 20 years because they love the quiet, family oriented community where it’s best to raise a family. Dina has created a large menu in this quaint place to more than meet the needs of her Modesto patrons. She loves the turkey croissant sandwich and the mocha almond fudge ice cream is her go to favorite.

For me, I totally went for the pastrami panini, old fashioned pineapple soda, and then I created a Dana~licious banana split! Leticia Hernandez, a dedicated employee, (and very delightful by nature!) for the past 3 years was happy to let me go crazy and never once questioned my borderline sinful ice cream combination choices! See my recipe! Also at Loard’s you will find much more than you might expect, example; a small, yet doable breakfast menu including bagels, toast, muffins, and even a selection of oatmeal’s. Nachos, hot dogs, specialty sandwiches, and fresh salads, too! Milkshakes, smoothies, espresso, iced or blended drinks, and yes, they sell ice cream cakes for all occasions, too. “Ube” is an ice cream flavor new to me, deep purple in color; you might anticipate rich berries, but not even close as it’s made from purple potatoes and coconut that flavor this ice cream, actually a favorite in Hawaii! Aloha Modesto!

Dana~licious @ Loard’s Banana Split Original Recipe! 1 banana 1 scoop pistachio ice cream topped w/ caramel sauce 1 scoop berry sorbet topped w/ strawberry sauce 1 scoop mocha chip topped w/ hot fudge sauce Covered in whipped cream & nuts, cherry on top!!!

the corner of Standiford and Tully in the Raley’s shopping center. Ron and Lynn Dickerson are the originators of Oodles Frozen Yogurt Shop. They opened their unique-solo store 3 years ago after frequenting other self-service yogurt establishments in the Sacramento area. The Dickerson’s keenly realized that Modesto would literally eat this frozen concept up! The Dickersons had 2 sons, Ross now 28, and their son Ryan who tragically passed away at age 18. The family is grateful how the Modesto community has stayed supportive of them throughout their heartbreaking loss. At the Modesto Library you will find the beautiful spirit of Ryan’s Reading Tree Library as a dedicated tribute. There’s also a statue in memory of Ryan on Scenic to honor him. You can regularly find Ron managing the store while Lynn is the CEO of the Gallo Center for the Arts. Oodles get the majority of their ingredients from local businesses; CA Gold Almonds and Walnuts, Ron Martella Farms, Rachel’s

kitchen for brownies and Mrs. D.’s granola, Loretelli’s Farm fresh fruit, the logo and interior color design by Marcia Herrmann Designs, plus local artist, Sandy Veneman, and Bob De Grasse, architect located on L St. in Modesto. Most frozen yogurts are 10,000 parts per million probiotics, but Oodles boasts a 100,000 probiotics per million. Outta my scope! All I do know it’s incredibly Dana~licious while the choices and combinations are endless! 8 different rotating flavored flowing yogurts varying from nofat, low-fat, no sugar, to lactose free, mostly gluten free. 8 sauces and over 50 toppings of nuts, cereal, candy, and fresh fruit! Yes, self-service is the way to go with the magnitude of creations to be devoured all those about to chill! See my recipe! Modesto View signature question: Beatles or Stones? Dina of Loard’s said both!! Ron of Oodles said Jimmy Buffet! He followed up with Beatle’s song “In My Life” but agreed he likes the Stones, too.

Dana~licious @ Oodles Fruity Original Recipe! Start with white vanilla frozen yogurt to cover bottom of cup Next, an outer swirl of pomegranate raspberry sorbet In the center, luscious lemon frozen yogurt Top with fresh raspberries, blueberries, pineapple, Strawberries, kiwi, and mangoes! Top with French vanilla granola and toasted almonds1 Cherry on top!!!

elcome to one of my favorite sections of ModestoView. Not only are we the “Home of American Graffiti” we are the birthplace of Rockabilly Music and one of the foundations of Rock and Roll. You see, Memphis + Nashville + Modesto = Rock and Roll This is the most straightforward math you ever need to know. Since Fred Maddox invented the Slappin’ Bass technique in 1937 and it all blended together over the 40s and early 50s until Rock and Roll exploded, Rockabilly remains today the music that put the “rock” in rock and roll. We have had a few Rockabilly and music legends come through Modesto in the last few months. To see our interviews with Jim Heath and Jimbo Wallace of Reverend Horton Heat, George Lucas about his record collection and Lee Rocker about Rockabilly history and the future, go to www. modestoview.com and enjoy our interview collection. Look for conversations with 90 year old Don Maddox of Maddox Brothers and Rose coming soon and look to ModestoView to lead the way in Modesto Music and Graffiti History. www.modestoview.com Like us at www.facebook.com/modestoview Follow us a www.twitter.com/modestoview

Join ModestoView and the local art community for an amazing fundraiser to benefit the Boys and Girls Club of Modesto and CLASS Art Program as we take ourselves to romantic Old Havana and enjoy an “Evening of Cuban Delights”. This event is “Focus On...” a photo exhibition and fun evening as a fundraiser for arts for youths programs, presenting a beautiful and stimulating photography collection depicting the life and times in “Old Habana” (Havana) in an exhibition that we are calling “Havana Focus” evening of the music, food, dance and great feeling of being in Old Havana. Photographers, David Schroeder and Jon Sousa spent several weeks immersed in the life of old Havana and used their cameras to tell the story. You will be astounded by the delicious authentic Cuban street food, a great stage show by the Arenas Cuban Dance Company, dancing to Los Boleros, and “street music” music with Ramon Romero, Carlos Caro & Rafael Manriquez: “Latitude 23” There will also be a special appearance by Modesto’s world-renowned opera star, Roy Stevens. Several bars will serving up the best Mojitos (featuring Gallo’s Shellback Rum), and a Cuban cigar cabana and ModestoView will be hosting one of the bars so stop by and look for the ViewCrew doing their best Hemmingway. New Spanish Rockabilly Surf Music Coming By Jennifer Allsup Two brothers Dave Gambler (guitarist & lead vocals), Danny Exito (upright bass ) join together with drummer Ricky Lobo to form a trio of men that take pleasure in their roots of Spanish Rockabilly. Gamblers Mark has been performing together since 2004 and come from the foothills of Southern California, mixing up the beats of Rockabilly, Surf & Ska sounds. Not really knowing anything about the Gamblers Mark trio besides a song or two, I found some really interesting finds. Dave and Danny grew up in a house filled with Spanish Rockabilly and their dad was a huge fan. This inspired Dave to start his own band called the False Idols. When that fell apart he joined forces with his brother

& Ricky Lobo. Playing shows that impressed their audiences. Now it’s our turn for some bass slappin’, drum tappin, string strummin’ entertainment right here in the birthplace of Rockabilly. Well, folks Tony

letons a local band that sure can play some mean music along with “Little Thin Dimes” a San Francisco based country, rockabilly, surf, latin & rock n roll. They have a motto that seems so true to music,” A gelatinous, gyrating, booty-shakin’ amalgamation of raw music. Shut up and dance if you can!”. The Knockout is a place to catch them when visiting San Francisco, but since they are coming to Modesto I suggest you give them your support here locally first. I guarantee you will be dancing! Geronimo and the Scalpers will be taking the stage as well playing some of their 60’s surf rock. Remember Hero’s is an all age venue with plenty of good food and beverages. Your admittance at the door is $10.00. We hope to see you there supporting local and traveling musicians. Modesto is the birthplace of Rockabilly with the Maddox Brothers and Rose so let’s make it our future too.

As the leader of VMI Music Institute, bands are created, taught and learn the music business and performing from top to bottom. The future of music is here. Let’s meet Darin. ModestoView: When did you start playing music? Darin Morris: I took guitar lessons for about a year when I was eight years old but then didn’t really take it seriously again until I was 16 in 1977. That’s when, fueled by my love for Aerosmith, Kiss, Lynyrd Skynyrd, David Bowie, and Boston, I started playing 2 to 5 hours a day and jamming with my friends. It was a little different back then, we had to learn everything by ear or by showing each other our ideas, and it was all records and cassettes. MV: What was your first band? DM: My first band was Crossfire, which later changed its name to Axis, with Dave Amaro, Ronnie Martin, Phil Boussard, and Jim Kee. MV: What made you want to dive in and become an expert guitarist and performer?

DM: Like a lot of kids, I didn’t feel any yearning for any type of obvious or standard career. The only thing that I was passionate about was music and guitar. MV: Did you have a lot of support from your family to learn music? DM: I did have support from my family. I feel that that’s a very important ingredient to any young person’s success. In 1979 the Guitar Institute of Technology in Hollywood, which later changed its name to Musicians Institute, had just been open for about a year. I had read about it in guitar player magazine and talked to my mom about it, about how cool I thought it was an wouldn’t it be nice if… And so on. I had just finished high school and she surprised me by signing me up and shipping me off to LA. it was very thrilling, exciting, and scary to me as an 18-year-old MV: What do you see in the youth of Modesto that gives you hope for the future. DM: There is so much talent here, we think of the truly great musicians as being one in 1 million but I think it’s probably more like one in 1000 or one in 100. You just have to find them and give them opportunities to grow and play and watch their talent become what it can. If you give them an outlet, or an opportunity, the child who’s considering diving into music can actually do it, or the kids whose interest in music is waning can be invigorated with new enthusiasm and excitement. MV: What is a common misconception about youth musicians that needs to be corrected? DM: I hope that parents and leaders realize that a young person’s enthusiasm for mu-

sic is not frivolous or strictly recreational. Taking music seriously, practicing studying and interacting with others, seems as important as taking any field of endeavor seriously. Sometimes a kid will get in trouble and the parents will take away their music because that’s what they truly love. I don’t know if kids get in trouble and their parents would take away math but I look at it as sort of the same, Something that is hard work that an individual can invest themself in to better themselves. MV: Can anyone learn how to play? DM: I think so, it definitely comes easier and more natural for some people, but sometimes the people have to work a little harder at it, develop a little more serious work ethic and are actually able to go farther. MV: Being in a band is so much more than just the music, what are the key elements? DM: Well, they say one of people’s biggest fears is public speaking. Standing on stage and playing your instrument, playing songs all the way through in a setting where you can be heard the whole entire time, is a similar daunting task to public speaking. There’s the time investment, the practice, the working with others and being part of a team, and then the courage or willingness to get up on stage in front of hundreds of

people and share what you have developed. I am so proud of so many of the kids I work with, because I know how hard they’ve worked, I know how much they’re putting himself on the line, and then on the day of a big show they take it to a whole other level and turn in their best performance ever. It’s truly inspiring and I’m getting a little weepy just thinking about it. MV: What do you hope to see happen over the next few years in the local music scene? DM: More, more, more. When kids are looking for an activity I want organized rock music to be an option on par with soccer and baseball. I want it to be totally normal to be in a band and for there to be an even larger community of Youth musicians who support and interact and encourage each other. MV: Why is music and art good for our community? DM: I think we want a vibrant and colorful and interesting community. Music and art take us out to interact with others and to develop our creative side and for things to Darin at Modstock

Darin and Kristie Morris be interesting which lends itself to interesting people. MV: What can people to do make a difference? DM: Just support the local goings-on and support your children and friends when they are interested in attending or being part of these musical and art oriented events. MV: Tell us about your upcoming shows. DM: On July 4, VMI Rocks.com/Valley music Institute will have a pretty amazing float in 4 July parade with some very talented young people doing some serious rocking. On July 21 we will take 20 bands of kids of all ages to heroes for a seven-hour marathon of mayhem which is my way of describing a super fun And rocking rock experience. On July 26 we will take over 10th St. place and have a rock party on Friday night from 7 to 9 PM. On August 4, the day after X fest, we will put on the third annual mod stock music festival with 30 bands and carnival rides and booths of arts and crafts. And all day celebration of peace love and music, that is free and we would love to see everyone at. MV: Beatles or Stones? DM: The stones are fantastic, Mick Jagger is one of the best performers in rock ‘n roll ever, I love Keith Richard and the interplay of the two guitars, and they have so many great songs. But can we please be serious? The Beatles are the best band of all time with the possible exception of Led Zeppelin. That is such an obvious truth that I do not think it’s even debatable

The Cote d’Oro, Shannon Mortuary, Fire Station #2, Hotel Covell, the Chuck Wagon, Hughson Hotel, the Strand Theatre, and Modesto Steam Laundry – the list of Modesto buildings destroyed over the last few decades goes on and on. Some were torn down for good reason; Modesto is a living city that has always been on the cutting edge of architecture in building for its future. But many significant historic buildings were torn down for what seems like no good reason, with little community dialogue, and no consideration for how historic buildings could have been reused, preserved, and given a new role in Modesto’s future The city of Modesto has a landmark preservation commission and more than 50 buildings have been designated city landmarks. At least four buildings have been listed on the National Register of Historic Places. If you think this provides complete protection for significant buildings, you are mistaken. The city of Modesto itself has torn down buildings that were either city landmarks (Woolworths, Fire Station #2) or on the national register (Hotel Covell). Other buildings have no protection at all. Recognizing the importance of historic preservation to the economic and cultural health of the city, the Modesto Art Museum is launching Modesto Heritage. The project’s mission is to research, educate about, and encourage the restoration and preservation of significant architecture,

landscape, and other built environments of Modesto One of the important aspects of our work is to educate the community about the economic advantages of historic preservation, not just for the property owner, but for the whole city. We will point out and encourage good examples of creative reuse of historic buildings as with the conversion of the old downtown post office into offices. We will facilitate dialogue about buildings that could see major changes in use in the next five years (the main library, the Hall of Records, the county courthouse). And we will give special attention to the buildings that gave Modesto a national reputation in architecture in the mid 20th century. You can learn what is happening in historic

It started out in 2000 on J St with Flying Blind, Post Garbo, Blessid Union of Souls in front of a gigantic cruise ship with 5 other stages and 20 other bands and a disco and ModestoView was there. Now, 13 years later, X fest is the Central Valley’s best summer party. You can go for the amazing line up of national and local bands, the awesome mix of DJ and house music or you can get your bass a slappin’ at the rockabilly stage, headbang at the metal stage, celebrate tribute bands, or go all classic rock and then just dance the night away, eating and drinking and partying with your friends. X Fest has something for everyone and it is a fun night in the Central Valley. This is a huge year for local bands! There are more local stages than ever before and this is a great opportunity for our own bands to share the stage with headliners. “”X Fest is really becoming a great festival and we feature more local music each year. It will be a great night!” explains Chris Ricci, event founder and producer. “Over the last 14 years, we have had an amazing mix of music and this year is very exciting” If you like to eat, there are more food vendors than a fair and you can get your taste of everything at your favorite downtown restaurants and bars, many offering their own VIP packages. There are fun booths, things to do, vendors with cool stuff and of course, lots of beads to make X fest the best party of the summer. This season offers a huge variety of performers from Puddle of Mudd, Aaron Carter and DMX to the exciting performance of the Moonshine Bandits to Modesto area favorites Y & T and the amazing Danctronauts landing and dancetrancing with their giant spaceship. One of the most exciting stages is the ModestoViewSweet Pea- Unity Music Rockabilly Stage that celebrates our history of rockabilly with the most rockin’ cool rockabilly cats you have ever seen. This year there is a special stage for local bands presented by Firkin and Fox and you can rock the night way with bands celebrating AC/DC, the Who to Queen thanks on the Fuzio Tribute Stage as well as a special . There will be a Latin stage with exciting performances and don’t miss the Sinn Fein Speakeasy even a foam party stage. You can expect and amazing otherworld experience with the Opulent Temple dance stage that takes you away with middle eastern fantasy. Event creator and promoter Chris Ricci has worked with the City of Modesto to make sure that 15,000 of your best friends and all enjoy the music and party safely in Downtown Modesto. There are no gang colors, and security is tight so be cool and just come prepared for fun.

Our Local X Fest Set List

by Jill Ferris and Nic Padilla

SU MMER PARTY!

Hey there! So its XFest time again, and as always we’re featuring a ton of great music! Now, usually when you buy your ticket, you have at least one or two bands in mind that you are going to see, however, this year Nic and I decided to put together a timeline of, mostly local, but all awesome bands that you can see this year at XFest. Make sure to stop by the Bud Light Stage to say hi to me, or try to find Nic between either of his awesome stages! HAPPY XFEST!! In the meantime, look these bands up and enjoy their music. 6 pm – Insideout – Bud Light Stage This band has been making quite a splash here in Modesto! Just in the last year they have opened up for J Boog, Mike Pinto, Authority Zero, and several other reggae acts visiting Modesto for a night or two. Insideout is a perfect choice for the first slot on the Bud Light stage this year at XFest because they know how to get a party started! So start your pregaming early if you must, but get downtown in time to check these guys out. They might be the opener this year, but the sky is the limit with a band like this! – Jill Ferris 6:30 – Bully the Kid – Nic’s Punk Rock Stage Originating from Brooklyn Ny, but now based out of Fresno Ca, Bully the Kid uses elements of punk, rock and reggae to create their unique sound. Their catchy fun style makes for a solid energetic show! They might be Fresno based, but their Modesto following is an impressively solid one. - Nic Padilla 7 pm – Natural Vibrations – Bud Light Stage Natural Vibrations (aka Natty Vibes) might not be living in this town but over the last year and a half, this Hawaii band has been to Modesto more than once. Each time, they’ve gain more fans and more friends. These are some of the nicest and most talented guys you will ever meet. Even if you are not typically a reggae fan, after a couple of minutes listening to them you will be grooving and dancing to their roots reggae sound! Back home in Hawaii they are legends, and I am so excited that they will be a part of this year’s line up on the Bud Light Stage at XFest!! – Jill Ferris 7:45 – YBS – Nic’s Punk Rock Stage 2013 X Fest Battle of the Bands winners, YBS, have taken over the scene as of late. With a raw, old school punk sound, and catchy songs that make you want to dance, their perfor-

mance is a fun one you’ll be glad you were a part of. One of the few bands who is happy to hear “Your Band Sucks” chanted while they play, YBS brings an awesome punk rock attitude to the stage, reminiscent of old school punk like Sex Pistols and Dead Kennedys. Definitely one to catch. – Nic Padilla 9:30 – Pounders – Nic’s Punk Rock Stage Coming to us from San Jose, Pounders fun rock/pop-punk sound and high energy live show gains them new fans every time they play. Fresh off the Vans Warped Tour Pomona, they’re ready to show Modesto a good time. With a sound that blends Greenday, Alkaline Trio, and Blink 182, and catchy songs full of attitude they’re a must see at this year’s X Fest. – Nic Padilla 10:00 – Better Left Unsaid – Nic’s New Rock Stage Modesto, CA’s Better Left Unsaid has been rocking the valley since 2003. Getting ready to release their third national cd, these guys are on the road straight to the top. With a modern metal sound, and a killer live show packed full of energy, these guys are one to keep an eye on at X Fest. – Nic Padilla 11:00 – Keep It Lit – Nic’s Punk Rock Stage Mark my words XFest goers, this stage is going to be a hot spot come 11:00 pm on Aug 3rd!!! Right down the way from where the Bud Light Stage is located, after Iration’s set is over, all Modesto’s reggae family will connect for this bands set. Why? The answer is simple, these guys rock!!! Keep It Lit is one of those bands that fuels the crowd with fun vibes, and you can’t help but dance. Not a dancer? You will be if you find yourself on 10th street at 11:00 on Aug 3rd. – Jill Ferris 12:00 – Hit and Run – Hawk Stage I am so excited to see these guys up on a big outdoor stage. It is almost like they were born to play huge stages, after dark, with killer lighting and tons of people! Hit and Run’s melodic hard rock will have you fist pumping and singing along all at the same time. These local boys formed the band only a couple of years ago, but this band is definitely one to watch. Next year we could be flying them in from Hollywood to perform back home in Modesto! – Jill Ferris

AUTHOR “The Peach”

Dedicated to my pal Si. Kevin and his friend, Phil, both ten years old, walked along Old Oakdale Road.

Back then, this part of Modesto was mostly peach orchards, grape vineyards, and flat, open fields. The side of the two-lane blacktop was dusty and debris-strewn. The two boys kicked up plumes of dust as they trailed Phil’s grandmother and grandfather. Babushka and Dedushka, as he called them, which was Russian for grandmother and grandfather, looked as if they’d just gotten off the boat from Kiev. Swaddled in dark, heavy, woolen clothes and thick shoes, she wearing a kerchief and he a peaked cap, they waddled along, heads down so as not to attract attention, which could be lethal for Jews in the shtetl. Every so often, as they moved alongside the peach orchard, Dedushka would stop, stoop down, pick up a ripe peach, and tuck it into the voluminous pocket of his

overcoat. He did this several times before they reached Scenic Drive, which was their route back into town and home. “Why does he do that?” Kevin asked. “That’s kind of icky.” “The peaches are good,” Phil replied. “Is he hungry?” “Not now.” “So, what’s the deal?” “It’s an old habit. And hard to break. In the old country, he never knew where his next meal was comin’ from. There was no food

by Ken White just lyin’ around on the ground. ‘Specially somethin’ as strange as a peach. For him, America really is the land of milk and honey. You and me, we take things for granted. Not him.” Kevin ran into the orchard, picked a particularly luscious peach, yanked it off the branch, caught up with Dedushka, and presented him with the golden fruit. The old man looked up and his eyes crinkled in a smile. He took the peach, wrapped it in his clean, white handkerchief, and tucked it carefully in the inside pocket of his coat. Excerpted from “The Flatland Chronicles,” a forthcoming fictional memoir in the style of the “Spoon River Anthology” by Edgar Lee Masters. However, instead of poems, this collection features short, short stories about life in the Central Valley.

ALL AGES Happy Summer!

by Abbey Murphy

Happy July everyone!! Now, the Fourth of July may be at the beginning of the month, but that doesn’t mean that you can’t be patriotic all summer! Here are a few of the best things for kids in Modesto during July that are all red, white, or blue! Represent your country’s colors by going out to find these great colors all over our great All American town. Red: Juicy ketchup on your burgers (keep it classic at Scenic Drive-In or kick it up a notch at Harvest Moon with your family!), the color of your skin when you spend all day outside playing putt putt golf at Funworks, the color of the bricks leading up to Brenden Theaters to see some great summer movies like Disney’s The Lone Ranger and Monster’s University, and last but not least fresh strawberries from the Farmer’s Market every Thursday and Saturday! White: The fluffy marshmallows squished

between some chocolate and graham crackers at your backyard BBQ, Fresh vanilla milkshakes from the Velvet Creamery (or maybe kick it old school and have roller skate carhop service at A&W), and the color of your shoes only until Labor Day, respect the rules of fashion! The pages of your summer reading books, and of course the color of the baseball that you could catch at the Modesto Nuts game! Blue: Your emotions as you realize the summer is winding down and school will be starting before you know it, the fresh water at Knights Ferry after your road trip with your friends, and fresh blueberries that you can pick yourself at the local orchards! I’m sad to say that this is my last article as the All Ages Editor of ModestoView. I will be passing on this incredible job to one of my favorite people in the world, Miss Leia Johnson. s the summer rolls on plenty of local family friendly things to do, strolling through our famers market to peruse the veggies while being serenaded by local bands, hitting the downtown for the third Thursday Art Walk with music, art, and food at local venues as well as the Graffiti summer events and don’t forget the regional county fairs and the 4th of July. There are some not to miss shows coming through in July and beyond to tell you about. Area promoter and music aficionado John Griswold is doing a Latin music fun-raiser call “the romance of old Havana” on July 27th, which will feature everything Cuban, music, Cuban food, dancing and even Cuban cigars! It will be a fun-raiser for arts and music in the schools. Los Boleros, a Cuban salsa Band with Ramon Romero’s group Cuedos de Fuego will play with Cuban street food by Larry MacCatering. Also there will be a Cuban Dance floor show with Arenas Dance Co from S.F. And if you feel like it, even a Mojito bar featuring E & J’s Shellback rum label. Tickets are available

ACOUSTIC

URBAN Up close with Reg Evans by Tru Luv Lopez

Americans show your colors, this is an up close and personal interview with an all American Reg Evans who has been promoting events and entertaining the masses for 8 years. We ask the hard questions and we get the answers. Tru Luv Lopez: At which moment did you decide promoting events would become something that took interest in you? Reg Evans: When I was in my early 20’s I moonlighted as a bodyguard for some pretty heavy acts as well as helping a lot of my buddies who were really great and popular DJs throughout the bay area. With promoting their gigs over the years it slowly became a passion to me. TLL: I have followed your career closely, yet there are few who have no idea of the other talents you posses, or shall I say trades and knowledge you have. Would you care to elaborate? RE: Allot of people don’t know this but i am an ex transit cop and i have been an investigator for the last 26 years, I am also an artist and a chef who has owned a couple of different restaurants, one in Turlock, Miami Bar & Grill and the other here in Modesto it was called Satchmos House of BBQ. TLL: Now you’re making me hungry and good thing my background check cleared. I understand you have been having some complications, recently in and out of the hospital. Tell me the story on how you have been pushing throughout this turn of events. RE: in 2010 I went to help a lady who had jumped off of the 9th street bridge and in the process I tweaked something that caused my right side waist down to become 100% paralyzed that in turn, led to me developing a blood clot that broke apart and

spread into both of my lungs with resulted in a pulmonary embolisms. This almost killed me and it’s been a long road to recovery but I firmly believe that with God all things are possible! TLL: Will we continue to see more Reg Evens events in 2014? RE: I am not sure. Hot Latin Nights mentally and physically drained me this year. a few of my buddies have reached out to me about some pretty great shows, but I am deciding if I want to get involved. I will have Hot Latin Nights 6 on May 3, 2014 as well as another project that is in the developmental stages but it will be a very positive, cross-cultural event. Reg Evans has worked with a ton of different artists over the years, different type of genres from local to regional, national and international acts like: Malo, Tierra, El Chicano, Strunz and Farah, Latin Essence, Legally Blynd, Bob James, Nathan East, Harvey Mason, Larry Carlton, Pete Escovedo, Brian Simpson, Latin Magic, Valley Rhythm Section, Mike Torres Band, Mellow Man Ace, Candyman, Rodney O, Joe Cooley, Johnny Valdez, Martin Martinez, Ernie Bucio Band, Will Donato, Willie and Lobo, Brian Simpson, Sonny Fairley, Ricardo Scales, Cheryl Lockett, Mary Elizabeth Boute, Michelle Richardson, Tom Braxton, Ray Fuller Michael Paulo, Travis Vega, Richard Smith, Brian Bromberg, Greg Adams Gregg Karukas, Blake Aaron, the OJays, Marirose Powell, Lowrider Band, Josh Rosenblum Band, Big Earl & the Cryin’ Shame, Jorge Santana and Salvador Santana. elcome to the new Acoustic View column. The San Joaquin Valley is an absolute goldmine of folk, roots, and country talent. I’ll highlight a different local gem or two every month. Rainy Escobar is a modern day country crooner in the vein of old-time greats such as Patsy Cline. Rainy composes hilarious story songs drawn from her rich life experience, like ‘Nip It In The Bud,’ about the failure of a long-distance relationship; and ‘Don’t Call Me Darlin,’ aimed at those who use a certain term of affection on you when they don’t even know your name. And she also covers the great classics, including a rendition of ‘Three Cigarettes In An Ashtray’ that would make Patsy proud. Rainy also leads a round-robin acoustic jam session twice a month. If you find yourself in the mood to take part in or just enjoy the sounds of some good ol’ bluegrass or oldtime tunes, drop by the Queen Bean Coffeehouse on the second and fourth Tuesday of every month from 7-9 PM. I’ve sat in on these sessions once or twice, and they are a great laid-back time. Music In The Plaza is featuring some astounding local acts this month on Friday evenings: 7/12, Will Taylor & Chris Doud (songwriters behind the Good Luck Thrift Store Outfit); and 7/19, contemporary folk duo Mark Lemaire & Twilight. They’ll be giving sets from 7-9 PM in the 10th St.

plaza, across from Brenden Theatres. The open mic session Sunday nights at the Queen Bean is having a 4-week run of local acoustic artist features this month: July 7th, Dan Vallerand; 14th, Vicky & Jimbo; 21st, Mattea Overstreet; and 28th, Renato Doradea. Shows start at 6 PM (signups at 5:30 for anyone interested) with the half-hour feature section starting at 8. The house concert series I host is going strong this month. These are small and intimate events in my cozy flat, which I call Hotel Euterpe (named for the Greek muse of music.) Artists from around the globe have been featured, usually paired with a local act. This month’s roster: 7/7, nationally acclaimed songwriter Jane Ross Fallon; 7/23, folk/bossa nova fusion artist Avi Wisnia and award winner Steve Key; and 7/26, touring friends Michael Shoup and Josh Hoke. Check out our ‘Hotel Euterpe’ Facebook page for further info, and you can get ahold of me at crashdog3@yahoo.com/209543-5306 to RSVP to events, which you will need to do as space is very limited. Enjoy a great summer of local music!

Nightlife Notes

Fat Cat –Sad news from the Fat Cat, they are closing for regular operations but will be available on a limited schedule for large events. Nino’s will be changing to a new owner so many of the regular events have been suspended, but the new owner will be powering up Nino’s with more fun nightlife.

Hero’s is in the game!

We have a new powerhouse BrewPub and Music House. This will be amazing. They have a big stage, all ages, food, drinks, a wall of TVs and Bill Coffey is back running the place. Great to have Bill and his team bringing music back to downtown in a big way. Middagh Goodwin, 2 time MAMA winner for best Rock Promoter is handling most of the booking and events. July features Ian McLagan of the Faces and keyboardist for the Rolling Stones July 16 and the legendary Punk Band Agent Orange on July 24th. More great things are coming and we welcome Hero’s to our awesome advertisers list.

What happened to 4, 6, 7 and 9? Does this sound familiar during your swim as you try to count your laps? Loosing count during your swim is easy to do, especially if you’re looking to swim more than 16 laps. Like most, I’ve tried several ways to keep track of my swim count but none have proved as effected as my Poolmate lap counter. Last year I invested in a watch that not

only counted my laps, but also kept track of my time, swim efficiency and calories burned. I was totally impressed and it made my swims more enjoyable not having to count my laps in my head, it aloud me to spend more time focusing on my swim and stroke. Just recently Swimovate came out with a more advanced swim watch so I decided to step it up to the new Vibrating Poolmate HR that offers additional swim

diagnostic tools in the pool. I’ve been using the new Poolmate HR for around 6 weeks now and my stroke has bumped up to the above average swimmer category. I’ve also enjoyed the vibrating feature on this watch; I no longer have to worry about counting laps in my head or even glancing at the watch to see what lap I’m on. I just swim and at every desired lap that I’ve programmed the watch to vibrate, it does informing me just how many laps I’ve swam, witch in turn informs me just how many more vibrates I’ll need to feel to complete my set of 128 laps. The heart rate strap was a little tricky at first, but I quickly learned to make sure I strapped it on very snug to get a more exact reading of how many calories I’ve burned according to my weight and age that I programmed into the watch. The software that comes with it has been very impressive; it enables me to see my entire swim by the numbers on my PC and has allowed me to focus where I needed help with being a better swimmer. Another plus from the watch verses any other is even though my 1st series Pool-

A L L

mate watch battery life lasted around 14 months before it had to be replaced, this one recharges itself through its PC’s software so the battery never needs replacing. As a Tri-athlete who swims around 6 miles a week in the pool, I’ve found that the Pool Mate HR has proven to be one of my most valuable tools in my swim training. So if you’re looking to get an advantage on your swim and are tired of counting your laps in the pool, a Poolmate watch just might be for you. www.swimovateusa.com

Swim Tip Closing your fists and swimming freestyle can really improve your stroke technique. At first it will feel clumsy and awkward, but it actually forces you to rotate your hips and move through the water the way you’re supposed to. Try alternating 2 laps with fists, & 2 laps straight freestyle.

July 2013

by Big Earl Matthews

Hi everyone, what a year so far. I am way past 100 shows since the first of the year and its been the craziest ride I have ever taken. I have been at this music thing for 12 years now and I have seen my ups and downs. One time I had 16 shows cancelled with one phone call, talk about heartbreak. That is just the way it go’s, as they say. Its not the the problems that come up in life, its how you handle them. With all things in life you have a choice, you decide how to perceive your situation. The optimist looks at problems as opportunities to grow and overcome. The pessimist looks for someone to blame. I think most of us take different roads with this at different times. So much of what happens in life is beyond our control but, we are in charge of ourselves and how we treat others, so remember that and be good to one another. Now it’s time to get down to the nitty gritty. I am really happy to tell you about a few great shows I have coming up this month. First off on July 12th, Chris Doud and Willy Tea from the Good Luck Thrift Store Outfit will be doing a very rare solo/duo show on the Plaza across from Brenden Theatre from 7 to 9pm. This show is free and it going to be awesome! Bring your kids and watch the magic. On the 24th in Merced,at the Partisan, I have partnered with RC to bring in Possessed by Paul James from Austin, Texas. He will be playing with Cole Thomason and Willy Tea from GLTSO. PbPJ is one of the greatest folksingers of this generation and this show is not to be missed. This next show on my schedule isn’t until August 3rd but, seeing as it is so early in the month I want to tell you about it now. Billy TK Jr. is the biggest guitar hero in New Zealand as well as an official cultural ambassador of the country. The MoFo Party Band from Fresno and Big Earl and the Cryin’ Shame will also be on the bill. The show is called BBQ and Blues and will feature BBQ from Doc’s. Billy hosted Mofo on a tour earlier this year through his home country and now they are doing the same

for him. Any of you who have seen MoFo before know that they are electric on stage and that they hold the distinction of being the only band from Fresno to ever win a MAMA Award. Tickets are on sale now at thestate.org. As far as the rest of the month goes, BEatCS will be playing at the Farmer’s Market in Riverbank on the 17th and at The Cow Track in Oakdale on the 20th. The Poorhouse Millionaires will be at Deva Cafe every Sunday from 10am to noon and you can always catch the Ian Stambaugh Trio at Hero’s every Tuesday night from 7pm to 10pm. Thanks for your continued support of live music in our area and don’t forget to tell your friends about all the great things going on in Modesto. The more the merrier is a real thing.
