Greetings Modesto Fans: Welcome to our special July issue, our 6th since we fired the magazine back up in Feb. More and more people are diggin on ModestoView everyday. It was so fun to pass out thousands of copies of Modesto at MoBand and talk to people and hear what they think. We were so amazed with the wonderful comments from, “this is the best thing to read in town” to “so glad you are back” to “I keep it on my table all month long to know what to do everyday” and “I hear you on the radio” and “I get your tweets” and finally, “I got it on my porch, I was happy”. Wow. Thank you. It is so great to hear that ModestoView is really making a positive difference in our area. This magazine would not happen if it were not for our amazing group of writers. Each of them write from the heart and tell the community about the things they they are doing. ModestoView writers are not professional writers, reviewers or critics, but they actually create the events and shows that make Modesto special. It is like your very own backstage pass to everything good happening in town. They are different and unique and offer their own special style. We love it and thank them for all that they do. Most importantly, none of this would happen without our advertisers. Our advertisers believe Modesto needs a 100% positive and 100% local magazine to say 100% good things about who we are. Thank you to them. Greg and Kyle Cobb work tirelessly, making calls, emailing and emailing to get appointments to create the innovative advertising and co-promotional opportunities that allow ModestoView to exist. Most importantly, ModestoView readers are the best local customers a company can get! Thanks also to Sierra Pacific Warehouse Group for being the backbone of ModestoView. (SPWG.com) So, thank you to so many important people that make Modesto what it is. We really are Modesto, USA- A Classic American City. Chris Murphy chrism@modestoview.com

Ms. Modesto 2011, Emilie Haarsma, always stays local for the Independence Day holiday. Her very close friends and family, of about 30, celebrate at their local ranch and enjoy the festivities of setting of fireworks, dancing, swimming, bbq-ing, and spending time with loved ones. Aside from Christmas, the Fourth of July is her favorite day of the year "because nothing beats an American Celebration on a hot summer night with family and friends." Dana’s on a burger mission! July is BBQ and grillin’ month. MoBand, neighborhood parties and our local chefs want to show their skills and two of our local restaurants have great options. Look what Dana found! By Dana Johnson

The Station on Tenth Street Chef Chad Briscoe Burger Me Happy!!! Finally! A downtown Modesto restaurant that understands many like to “Grub after the Club!” The Station on Tenth Street opened its doors in Early June and already has created quite a buzz. The Station on 10th is an ace choice after an evening of downtown Modesto’s numerous entertainment spots. Chef/ Owner Chad Briscoe says “Come have fun! Great drinks and amazing food!” In this cool old school garage style restaurant you can grub on 100% Angus Beef Burgers, sandwiches, kid’s menu, and

breakfast burritos to the meat lover’s scramble while indulging in a full bar. The 1/4 lb. burgers are a steal, priced @ $3.99-$4.99. Chef Chad at the breezy age of 35 is a Modesto native who moved to Georgia for a short time before coming back home to follow his culinary dreams. He gave up his career of 14 years in construction to pursue his true passion for cooking, inspired by his 3 children. Chef Chad graduated from the Modesto Institute of Technology in the culinary program. Chef Chad claims he is a ‘foodie’ and a fat kid at heart. He rarely allows

Chef Chad’s Cajun Spiced Burger: Start off by using 100% Angus Beef (Only the BEST). This is for a 1/2 Pound Burger with a single yield.

CajunSpice: 1/4 Cup of salt 2 Tbsp. cayenne pepper 2 Tbsp. paprika 1-1/2Tbsp. onion powder 1 Tbsp. freshly ground black pepper 1 Tbsp. freshly ground white pepper 1 Tbsp. garlic powder 2 tsp. dried basil 1 tsp. chili powder 1/4 tsp. dried thyme 1/4 tsp. ground mustard 1/8 tsp ground cloves

himself any time off from the restaurant, but when he does he likes to spend every waking moment with his kids (though he does take pleasure in a Vegas vacation!) He has a 3 yr. old son that loves to play wrestling, a 5 yr. old daughter who loves to pretend she is opening her own restaurant like Daddy, and his 16 yr. old daughter is often found spending quality time hanging out with Dad at the restaurant. When he was a kid he played in a band. His favorite movies are The Harry Potter Series. His biggest fear is to be a failure in the eyes of his children. He would like to be remembered as a pretty good guy who lives long and loves happily. In ten years from now he’d like to be opening his tenth restaurant! Chef Chad is dedicated to working hard to carve his path to culinary success. Chef Chad’s signature Cajun Spiced Burger has an impressive combination of flavors sure to be customer favorite. Upon request Chef Chad created a fantasy burger for me, Dana’s Mozzarella Cheese Stix and Marinara Burger!

Instructions: 1. Rub Olive oil on Patty, Place on pre heated grill. Season with Cajun Spice & Cracked Black Pepper. 2. Remove sausage from casing, in saute pan, cook on high heat until one side starts browning. Add red onion, chili sauce and olive oil and mix well (AP. 1 minute) Add tomato mixture (AP 1 more minute).

Insanely Dana-licious and yes he will make it for you, too! He honors special menu requests. This is the only menu I know of with crawfish on it, too. ‘Chewy’ of the Modesto Power fitness training center orders the Modesto Power sandwich loaded with portabella, red bell, zucchini, & onion to fuel his workout day. Beatles or Stones? Beatles, Jealous Guy also done by Casey James on American Idol. But then he foolishly says; “between you and I, I hate the Stones!” Luckily my mouth was full of burger and it took 2 hands to hold it! www.facebook.com/StationOn10th The Station on Tenth Street 950 10th Street Ste 15 Modesto 209.846.9768 Sunday - 9 PM - at least 2:30 AM Monday - 10 AM - 3 PM Tuesday - Saturday 10 AM - at least 3:00 AM

Fave dinner at home is braised short ribs with parsnip puree

featuring a red wine sauce! Plus he’s a chocolate freak like me! (But no invite for me?!) Fave cocktail a shot & a beer! On his days off Chef Robb can usually be found by the pool or on the couch if he’s not working on his hobby of photographing beautiful food. Over Modesto The Moon Shines

A basement inspires the imagination of many young minds. It’s a place where a single light bulb may hang with a dangling chain to turn on and off the light. For Lee Palleschi, Master Distiller and owner of Valley Spirits of Modesto, a basement was where his passion began and now thrives with the light burning brighterthan ever. “When I was a young boy, my Dad used to make wine in the basement. I remember him crushing the grapes and telling me that this was the way Grampy used to do it. I loved the smell of the fermenting grapes, so sweet and fruity. Dad explained the process of making wine to me but I was young and did not give it the attention I should have. After several years working in the food processing business, Palleschi met a man interested in making ethanol fuel. He started practicing fermentation with sugar and his childhood memories of

his father’s wine making began to consume his thoughts. Palleschi began researching the art of distilling vodka. For over two years he worked with as many as a hundred different recipes. Palleschi would not be satisfied until the product was perfected. “We would have neighborhood block parties and Lee would bring a few different samples.” Said John Boyatt, owner of O’Mally’s bar. “I’m not a vodka drinker. I’m more of a tequila drinker. But Lee would make us try his samples anyway. Now, this is the best seller in O’Malley’s.” It took nearly a year to get a license to distill. In order to get a license, you have to comply with both federal and state regulations. “It was a one man show to start with and I learned a lot through the process.” Said Palleschi. The one man show didn’t last long past the licensing. Palleschi says this

business has truly opened his eyes to the wealth of the human spirit. “I’ve met an amazing group of people and this has turned into a real grass roots project.” “From talking to others in the industry who are willing to share their knowledge to the local friends and Cold House family that have been so generous to lend a hand, I am overwhelmed with the kindness and encouragement that

Lee with his vintage copper boiler.

I have received.” Valley Spirits, what is now the parent company of Cold House Vodka, now has 5 employees and has plans to grow. Cold House Vodka is a premium vodka that is 5 times distilled to ensure that only the purest alcohol reaches every bottle. “I’ve never been interested in producing quantity as much as quality.” Says Palleschi. “I knew from the beginning that quality was the most important and after that I would find a way to produce quantity.” Quantity has been a big hurdle for Cold House. Currently, you can purchase Cold House Vodka in Save Mart stores throughout California as well as local grocer Obrien’s Markets. For those that enjoy a cocktail while dining or socializing, Cold House has become a favorite at many local establishments. “Tom Gallo, owner of Galletto’s Ristorante in downtown was the first bar to carry my vodka. I really appreciated that support early on.” Said Palleschi. Since then, other locals have embraced Cold House as a local favorite. Les Knoll, owner of Copper Rhino and O’Ryleigh’s in Merced and Stockton, has helped to promote Cold House. Not just because it’s local, but because it truly wins the taste test on a regular basis. Knolls says, “When you come into one of my clubs, I’ll give you the

taste test, if you don’t pick Cold House, I’ll buy your drink.” I’m not sure if that offer still stands, but next time you see Les, it’s worth a shot. Or two! Valley Spirits has recently purchased new equipment and has plans to increase production to 150,000 cases per year. While other premium vodka brands cost more, those that have tried Cold House realize that this product is pleasing to the taste and the budget. It’s causing an increased demand and Palleschi wants to be able to meet that demand. Palleschi is in test mode for flavored vodka. Peach, lemon, chocolate, cherry, orange and even almond are some of the flavors that could be hitting the shelf soon. Palleschi is also looking forward to the release of Moonshine Bandits Outlaw Moonshine, a premium whiskey product promoted by the chart climbing Moonshine Bandits. So, the next time you’re enjoying an evening under the light of the moon, try a local Vodka that will tantalize your taste. If the moon isn’t readily available, just turn on the basement light and let your imagination take over. Either way, your choice of Cold House Vodka will definitely make the evening more interesting and your support of a local business will be undoubtedly appreciated.

The

Guitar Czar By KYLE Cobb

www.deangatewoodguitars.com. For some people a guitar is merely a six-string noise making apparatus, but for others they are masterfully crafted weapons of aural combat. The latter would be the belief of master guitar

builder and Modesto resident, Dean Gatewood. Growing up in New Jersey with four older sisters who either sang or played an instrument, Dean found himself immersed in the music of the

1960’s. This upbringing has led to a lifelong passion for music. All great craftsmen have a moment of clarity and vision that leads them to their destiny. For Gatewood, this moment came while listening to a Beatles tribute band in the center court of the local shopping mall. Entranced by the tone emanating from the guitarists’ black Gibson Les Paul, he knew he had to have one. Since a Gibson Les Paul was slightly out of his price range, Gatewood knew he would have to build his own. Starting out in his parents’ basement in New Jersey, Gatewood began to deconstruct guitars he found at the local junk store to study their components. At age thirteen, the first Dean Gatewood design came to fruition with a neck crafted out of a 2x4 and a basic pine block for the body. During his high school years, Dean attended a vocational school in which he enrolled in a woodworking course. Naturally, this course became a favorite of Dean’s. Learning from master carpenter Norman Nelson, gave Gatewood his keen attention to detail. While the other students were building stools and tables, Dean was building guitars. After graduation, Gatewood would go on to join the United States Marine Corps and served until 1981. Upon completion of his service as a Marine, Dean found himself in Livermore, California where he met Marc Petak, a fellow guitarist. Soon thereafter Dean was playing

in a band with Marc and back to building guitars. While living in Livermore, Dean met his wife Cathy, and opened his first recording studio. As the Gatewood family expanded, with the births of Justin and Kelli, the need for additional space quickly became a necessity. The family packed their things and headed for Modesto, where the family expanded further with the birth of Kenny. Once settled in Modesto, Gatewood took his craft one step further. He began constructing custom speaker cabinets and guitars for local and Bay Area music stores. Dean Gatewood now has a full service shop located on Jerusalem Court in Modesto, CA where he specializes in everything from minor repairs and restoration to custom guitar and bass designs. The attention detail is very apparent in Gatewood Guitars. Many of the creations are worthy of a display case in an art museum, but the true beauty of it is that they play as well as they look. Visit Dean Gatewood Guitars and let your imagination run wild.

Minnie’s is the oldest bar in Modesto. The house itself was built in 1901 and served as a doctor’s house and office. The house was moved from next door and converted into a restaurant and lounge in 1954 by Hop and Minnie Louie. Peter and Stuart Mah are the cooperators of the establishment and candidly told me that “supposedly” their father long ago won the house in a poker game, but I’m never one to spread stories. On that note, there have also been a number of ghost reportings in the old house.. The origin of the Jerk: Peter Mah, owner of Minnie’s, was serving a group of…less than charming ‘gentlemen.’ They, very politely I am sure, ordered Peter to concoct something new just for them. Peter came up with a fruity, cold, and very pink mixture with a secret shot of 151 cleverly hidden in the straw. The drink’s appearance was likely a bit of a blow the gentlemen’s sensitive egos, however the group’s reaction to the first sip was quite a throwback surprise. “They didn’t know what hit them,” stated the drink’s creator. As the group of lovely gentlemen exited the lounge, Peter remarked: “What a bunch of jerks!” And lo, ModestoView readers, thanks to an assembly of jerks, a drink legend was born. There was a period of time where I did not talk about or take a soul to Minnie’s. I was convinced I had found the crowning jewel of Modesto’s bars and I was not about to start sharing it with anyone. Turns out, I didn’t have to tell anyone about Minnie’s because the place is such a people-magnet, especially during the summer, that the bar and patio is continuously full from open to close. And why wouldn’t it be? Have you ever paired your pot-stickers with

a jerk on that terrific back patio? It is a huge slice of freaking heaven. How do you not share something you love? Diane Marcuerquiaga is, by all my standards, an amazing bartender and has the amazing ability to guess who is coming into the bar by what time it is and the sound of their footsteps, thus the Jerk waiting for me when I arrived. Minnie’s patrons are a committed bunch, and rightfully so. My bar side friend told me he is the fourth generation of his family to visit Minnie’s regularly. When asked what the draw is, he stated: “Diane camaraderie during angry hour.” Angry hour? Nearly every bar has happy hour so Diane created

angry hour, and it all starts on Diane’s call. “All the drinks go up a dollar,” Diane joked. Joking aside, however, my anonymous bar friend is correct, the afternoon regulars come for Diane, angry hour or not. Interesting anecdote: Next time you’re at a cocktail party and want to impress the hell out of everyone, just whip out this gem of a fact courtesy of Diane: One may notice the number of patron-name-bearing dollar bills tacked up around the bar inside. I even have a

bill with my name up on the wall somewhere. The notion of sticking up a dollar with your John Hancock on a barroom wall is no recent trend. Originally, merchant marines would take up a namemarked bill so whenever they returned to a previously visited bar, they always had quick cash for a drink with…you guessed it…their name on it. Sticking with the tiki-bar atmosphere, the bills are a fun addition to an already fun bar.

interview

Back in the Saddle

During the late 1990s, the Modesto Chamber of Commerce was on a roll. Energetic, engaged, lively and driving a program that was unabashedly proModesto called Modesto Means Business. (You might remember the song?) After wandering through the dessert of uncertainty for the last decade, the Chairmen of the Board are back in the groove and there is a new CEO in town. Cecil Russell, long time Save Mart VP and former Chamber President is at the helm, driving, and very eager to show that Modesto, USA is indeed a Classic American City and the Modesto Chamber of Commerce can do great things, for business, for civic pride and our future. Cecil was raised in Manteca and while attending MJC, went to work for Payless Drug Stores, became a Store Manager working in Stockton, Concord, Oakland, Cerritos, and Alameda, then to Corporate in Oakland in 1974. In 1987 he joined Save Mart Supermarkets here in Modesto as Vice President of Merchandising and Marketing, retiring in Sept 2010. Cecil served on many local Boards, including Sylvan Schools Educational Foundation, SPIE Board, United Way Board and a dozen years on the Chamber Board and served as Vice Chairman of Economic Development and Chairman of the Board. Cecil has been married to Nancy for 38 years with 3 daughters, 2 sons and 3 grandchildren. Let’s see where he is now and learn more about Cecil. MV: After your retirement, why did you jump head-first into the Modesto Chamber? CR: After about four months of retirement, I was asked to rejoin the Chamber Board as the Vice Chairman of External Operations. Then a few months later the board decided to make a change in the CEO position. I was asked if I would fill that role and I accepted stating that I would need the help of all members of the board. I

believe it is a duty to give back to the business world and our community in general. MV: How would you describe the current business environment in Modesto? CR: It is soft as the economy in general is soft. However, I believe we canhelp ourselves by committing to our Modesto Means Business Shop Local Campaign. There are new businesses continuing to open in our community and we have grown our manufacturing jobs, contrary to other communities in our area. The latest move by the City to lower Capital Facilities Fees is a great step in helping attract more business in our community and for current business to expand. MV: What is the most pressing thing that needs to be done or changed? CR: We need to continue to remove obstacles to business growth and to encourage investments that will create jobs. MV: Do you think that Modesto is the Classic American City? CR: Yes, I do. It has been a great community for me to raise my children. Ithink Modesto is a great community of families. It has been a great community for giving back. The fund raising activity has always been generous, even in these tough economic times. We have great parks, and both public and private schools, many bicycle trails, Golf, both public and private, MoBand, the Symphony, The Gallo Center, the State Theatre and many other events that our citizens and visitors can enjoy. And of course we are the gateway to the Sierras and Yosemite National Park. We have earned the All American City designation many times. MV: Do you think that our American Graffiti history celebration should be expanded and enhanced? CR: Absolutely, we have a heritage that many cities

would do anything to have. We need to have a more collective group to build on our past success and make this one of the largest festivals in the country. MV: Why is a vibrant downtown Modesto so important? CR: I believe that the downtown is the heartbeat of any great City. When many people visit a town, first they check out the downtown for City functions and because we are the County seat, they check out the services of both. How we are viewed by either tourists or business people that are considering to locate in our area; their first impression, sets the stage for potential economic growth. MV: What should happen to the old Modesto Post Office? CR: It should be preserved and should house sought out and often visited services that serve our community and visitors to our community. It could become a show place that accents our heritage. MV: What advice would you give a new start up business in Modesto? CR: First develop a good solid business plan. Use The Alliance and or S.C.O.R.E. {Located in the Chamber office] to review or assist with their plan. Find a good location that attracts their customer base and get involved in the community. Modesto likes business that give back to the community. MV: What keeps you awake at night? CR: The thought that we are not doing enough to attract and encourage our future leaders of our community. MV: Tell us about your favorite Modesto experience ever.

CR: I had had so many here in Modesto with my family, if I had to choose it would be back when the Cruise was in full flower, getting to meet Wolfman Jack and being on stage as he presented some of the classic rock and rock performers. MV: Did you used to cruise? CR: Yes. I had a '58 Ford that I thought was cool, however I had a Professor at MJC that threatened to flunk any of us if he ever caught us cruising. He was not "cool". MV: Describe your perfect ultimate Modesto evening‌ CR: There are a few-- Going to dinner downtown and then going to a show at the Gallo Center. Meeting friends for a picnic and listening to MoBand at Graceada Park, or just hanging out in our backyard with friends and neighbors enjoying an evening of bar-b-que and some nice wine. MV: Beatles or Stones? CR: Beatles nothing better than Hey Jude or Imagine, I love their music. MV: Anything else you want to add? CR: I love Modesto, it has been a great place to raise my family and work, agreat place to live. Cecil Russell can be reached at crussell@modchamber.org

Xcites Modesto Since 2000, XFest has been the huge summer party for Modesto. Our downtown streets have been home to over 100 stages, over 600 bands and nearly 200,000 party goers. August 6, at 5:00 pm, the gates will open on the 2011 Xfest, featuring huge performances by Panic at the Disco, Moonshine Bandits, DAM, Y&T, Jeremiah and so many more. 8 Stages, 50 bands and 15,000 of your closest friends will celebrate music and fun. Chris Ricci, (co founder of the MAMA Awards, Fat Cat General Manager, record label exec and promoter) has delivered an exciting, fun and safe event that gets bigger and more well known every year, drawing music and fun fans from all over Nor Cal. You need to be there.

How to do X-fest

The bars and restaurants located inside the X Fest area will all be open and are a good place to hang out. You will want to find a good spot indoors if it is hot. Plan ahead. If you are there for the music, make sure you map out your stage schedule. You will want to make time to get from one stage to another. It is impossible to do it all, so pick your faves early. Don’t worry about staying hydrated, there are many ways to get adult beverages and water and food is

sold in the food court on I street with dozens of tasty options, as well as the regular restaurants. It is nearly impossible to make a recommendation on who to see since there are so many choices and diverse people that go, but here are some shows you really shouldn’t miss. Moonshine Bandits are a local group, with their truck stop hip hop and Shiner Nation fans and dancers, this show will be a highlight of the evening and watch for some fun surprises! You need to get over to the Toyota Hawk Stage ASAP to see DAM, if you aren’t staying for Panic at the Disco. There will be two new stages this year, an all Metal stage that will be managed by ModestoView Metal editor Mike Vanek and a Rockabilly Stage. Both of these will be very fun. Cover bands are great and you can hear some of your faves at the Fuzio stage in 10th St Place. Our MAMAView interview this month, Matty Comer will be on the Dos Equis/KHOP stage at 6:45 and ModestoView Urban editors, the FiestaBoyz will be jammin’ it at 8:30. Los Punks at Midnight will be perfect. Key things to plan: Car pool, drink lots of water, park a few blocks away from X Fest and walk. Bring your camera, your party attitude, and make sure X fest is a fun and safe night. xfestmodesto.com

Matty Comer By Chris murphy

This is an exciting time of the year when the local bars and restaurants are booking a lot of bands for the summer, everyone is getting ready for X-fest things are just on fire. Some of our bands and families work so hard to support the local scene as they not only perform, but book and organize shows and festivals. This month we get to know Matty Comer, a performer last year at the MAMA Awards and at the Amgen Tour as well as a multitude of gigs around the area. He also presents the Turlock Acoustic Music Society. On top of all that, his music is awesome. ModestoView sat down with Matty and got the inside scoop. ModestoView: When did you first pick up the guitar? Matty Comer: I first picked up a guitar shortly after having knee surgery at the age of 22. I was a competitive Rugby player who needed something to occupy my time while recovering from a career ending surgery. I didn’t really start to use it though until one of my friends came across one of my poetry books and began to put acoustic rhythms to my words...I basically learned how to play the guitar so that I could sit down and play and sing the words that I hadwritten prior to even owning a guitar. MV: How would you describe your music to a person sitting next to you on plane? MC: Ihave heard alot people say that my sound is similar to that of Neil Young and Crazyhorse. My lead guitarist Dr. Blue picked up on it immediately...and accented our themes and intros so that you can hear it. This is very prevalent in a song called PROMISE LAND.... However, I am from West Georgia and I have always been a huge fan of Ronny Van Zant, Hank Williams Jr., Marshall Tucker and the southern rock sound that influenced my generation. MV: What song from your childhood gets stuck in your head? MC: The one song from my childhood Marshall Tucker CAN'T YOU SEE...all time favorite.. MV: Where has your most awesome gig been? MC: You know we as a band have been fortunate to play alot of incredible shows...I do not know to how pick just one...We have opened on 4th of July for Shontelle at Graceda Park... She had a #1 song IMPOSSIBLE at the time. Huge crowds... We have also opened for Lance Lopez three times (WOW WHAT AN AMAZING GUITARIST...)

18

The Fabulous Thunderbirds, Carbon Leaf, Tempest, and more that I am forgetting probably X Fest 2010 was incredible...We opened for We The Kings, Cartel, Baby Bash, and WARREN G.....highlight of the summer last year... MV: If you could sound like some other musician, who would it be? MC: If I could sound like anyone else, it would have to be my mentor Dr. Blue...He is truly amazing, and I seem to always have his guitar work playing in my head... MV: What would your dream jam be? MC: My dream jam wow, that is a hard one! Probably to be on stage with The Allman Brothers, Toy Caldwell, and Charlie Daniels....I would have loved to see them in the mid seventies when they were on fire. MV: What could the community do differently to help local bands? MC: I try not to think about what the community can do differently...I look at what we as a music scene can accomplish....Over the last six months I have been throwing a monthly show here in town at The Queen Bean under my production Company - The Acoustic Rock Society... I have had such a huge response from those attending as well as those playing!! Each show has grown, and now going into July it is amazing how much talent is in this area...I love the fact that there is a monthly ALL AGE performance to showcase the elite from this music scene of ours...More families are coming out each month, and we as artists LOVE IT... We need more avenues to showcase ourselves in an productive light. And we are taking advantage of our situation as much as possible...Watch for us.... MV: You had a big performance at the 2010 MAMA Awards, what was that like? MC: What an honor it was for us to even be nominated for the BEST ROCK category, which our brothers DAM won! But to be given the opportunity to play in front of all of our friends, family, fellow musicians at The State Theater which was sold out was a huge ac-

Hector J by FIESTA BOYZ

This Month Fiesta Boyz interview the newest but very musically inclined DJ to hit the (209), Presenting Hector J.

FiestaBoyz mixing it up at the Fat Cat in June. FiestaBoyz: What were your first musical inspirations and at what age? Hector J: There used to be a Friday Night Video show in the early 80's called "Night Tracks" that showed all of the new videos. I used to sit in front of the TV and record the sound with a tape recorder so I could immediately listen to the song after the video was over (no copyright infringement/bootlegging intended..I was 4). My other main influence was myuncle Jesse. He introduced me to what was referred to as "Modern Rock". My love for Depeche Mode, The Smiths, Erasure, etc. is because of him. Well, and the fact that it is awesome. FB: We understand you've always been into music, but when did you de-

cide to become a DJ? HJ: One day I was at my friend Disco Dan's house. He was getting ready and told me to try it out since he was going to be a few minutes..or so. He had some CDJ's and I gave it a shot. I was instantly hooked. At that time, I had a lot on my mind, and music/ DJ'ing really provided me with a positive outlet. I’m still really not comfortable calling myself a DJ. I am more of a music lover who enjoys playing music for large crowds, small crowds or just for myself. It really makes no difference to me. I enjoy it all. The title of DJ must be earned in my opinion. My friends are DJ's. They have paid their dues, perfected their craft, and earned it. Maybe Someday... (I have a lot of work to do). I must say, there is no better feeling than mixing in a song and getting the chills as it is mixed in

exactly how I heard it in my mind. The chills that stem from the love of music. FB: Which DJ's did you grow up listening to? HJ: I grew up at a different time. There were fewer DJ's back then than there are now. If I had to name them, I would say Hocus, Reck, Trix, Jammin J, Reckless Rich, 9T9, Bozak and my Mixlab partner Tony Vibes who I been hanging with for over 15 years. I also listened to Ghost, Carlos, and Stevie to name a few. FB: Tell our readers a little about The MixLab Music Group and what they bring to the music scene?

Rob Zombie performs at Fat Cat. This month I had a few things to talk about. But first I must talk about a good thing coming up a lot in conversation. There are a lot of great promoters here in Modesto doing great shows at venues like Seasons, Spinnakers, King Kabob, & of course the Fat Cat Music House in Lounge!! Every band and or promoter in town has a Facebook these days and I suggest looking some of us up because we are all putting on great shows this summer. A few are always linked on my Facebook www.facebook.com/ mike.vanek Next thing in the news this month was Rob Zombie at the Fat Cat…I did a full Video Blog of the show and it was amazing. Please add my YouTube channel 209Productions1 or follow this link and experience it yourself!!! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-xSULyeZ0MI A huge topic this month in the metal community is the roster of metal bandsplaying at X-Fest 2011!!! For the first time in many years Mr. Chris Ricci did the right thing and booked a few of the best metal and rock bands for their very own stage presented by Sin Cal Industries in Riverbank!! When asked how much it meant to them, Jojo & Chuck of Nothing But Losers said “We are stoked! It’s the coolest thing that has ever happened to NBL besides playing the MAMA awards last year!” Austin of Through the Threshold said, “We are grateful for an amazing opportunity and we are super stoked!” This is a really big deal for us metal heads and we can’t wait to bring the metal back to X-Fest 2011!!

Regrettably, we note the passing of Artel founder and owner Nora Faria last month. She will be missed. This past art walk, Chartreuse Muse changed its quarterly exhibition to “Out of Focus” by Geoff Wynne, with additional work by Corey West and other the Muse artist regulars. This exhibition will be up through August. Modesto Art Co-Op artists Sandy Lynn, Linda Knoll and Jim Christiansen have paintings on the front wall of the Stanislaus County Library, near the tutoring center and “The Little Shop” and were featured at Art Walk. Sometimes overlooked, the Library and McHenry Mansion gift shop on 15th Street are Art Walk map spots. At Jax on H, Art Walk coincided with nonprofit Thursday benefitting and making friends for the Mistlin Gallery. For the rest of art walk, Gallery 909 the CSUS Student Gallery was open.

Mark Holden paintings shown at Serrano’s, and Anne Heacox at Crow Trading, and great photography show at DEVA. Off the map spot Copper Rhino had Vincent Sandoval III Art lamps, and Rhythm Deluxe blues jam. The Farmers Market at Gallo Center was open with Rachel Renae. Azucar had artists from Modesto Art Meet. For the July Artwalk, Ale McGrew and Nate Adams at Crow Trading, and the Valley Sun Catchers Show opening at Mistlin. Valley Sun Catchers will be up through August 13, followed by the Mistlin Gallery CCAA Members Show III. This month’s Third Thursday Art Walk is July 21. Modesto Art Museum, still a miniprintmaking show to enter in August, but if you should start seeing large black and white photo images popping up in vacant downtown storefronts, blame a public art project titled, “Meet your Neighbors” sponsored by the MAM. I had my photo taken with Cherub at Deva during art walk, by photographer Jessica Gomula and her able printmaking artist assistant Andrew Cain. If you think the Mistlin Gallery may have grown, the art in the next door unit window is from the

Memorial Complementary Therapy Art Class using the same "fill the window with art" concept. Good marketing and less dreary for downtown patrons to see some activity, and what could be done with these spaces. Delicato Winery is now exhibiting its 2011 Photography show at the tasting room in Manteca. It runs through July 23. Next regional show in our area for Photographers will be at Mistlin Gallery, with its photographer’s show September 13 through October 13. Finally a couple of adult art class notes. The Tuesday life drawing sessions continue each Tuesday night at the ChartreuseMuse, 7 to 10 pm, $10/ session. No instructor. Bring your own choice of media, and join in by using the back door to the gallery, and up the stairs to the upstairs studio. Chella Gonsalves is offering a Critique class at Mistlin Gallery, “Improve Your Own Work” 4 to 6 pm, 4th Weds of the month, or 1st Sat. through November. $12 per walk ins, no more than 3 paintings each per class. Chella will also be offering a plein-aire class in August. Register at the Mistlin Gallery at 1015 J Street, Modesto.

John Coito By Chris Murphy

22

ModestoView is very excited to feature a very special friend returning to the art scene. Well, he never really left, but it is time to introduce him to a new generation. John Coito was famous for drawing everything and everyone when I was in high school and college in the 70s and early 80s. John grew up in Modesto and was a Modesto High grad in 1961. He is brilliant and would draw everyone and has an amazing eye for accuracy and caricature, which is a very keen skill. Quiet and reserved, John was an amazing pool player and made a living on the circuit for a while. He was sogood, he was called “the Teacher”. He graduated from CSU Stanislaus in 1967 with an art degree and became a real teacher. He started drawing for local advertisements, maps, and promotionalmaterials. He has drawn the famous and the movers and shakers over the last 40 years. His serious drawings are amazing and few draw animals

like John Coito. It is now time for the new generation of movers and shakers to finally get their “Coito”. I got mine, and now you need to get yours too. You will see new Coitos in ModestoView every month. To reach John for serious or caricature portraits or any other kind of drawing: John Coito – 209-605-4642 or johncoito@ aim.com

Reform? By Efren Martinez

What comes to your mind when you hear the word reform? Improvement, restructuring, modification, change or even perhaps time off for good a behavior. Well, perhaps, if you just got out of the big house. Let me lay it down for you this way, no long stretch, no big house but all of the above and on your back on a Pilate’s Reformer. I recently paid a visit to Jessica Denegri, owner and Pilate’s instructor at Core Fitness Pilates and Yoga Studio. I met Jessica a few years ago at the fitness club where she was a personal trainer there as well as a Pilates Reform Instructor. What caught my attention about her was her amazing accomplishment in fitness as well as her before and after photos of her reformed hard rock body. It’s true friends, the Reformer did for her what so many have failed to accomplish by other fitness means. Being a retired Mat Pilate’s instructor myself, I had never really given the Reformer a fair shake. So, on one Wednesday afternoon, I asked her to do what so many trainers have never been able to do, break me! Work my abs till they are at the point where they are crying for their mama. She proceeded to put me on the Reformer and put my abs through a hard-core workout. After my session I must say, myabs never once cried for their mama, but cried “Uncle.”

Yes Modesto View Readers I was sold. “The Reformer” can help achieve not only that 6-pack stomach quicker then any other exercise machine, but also helps me with all my fitness legs in a Triathlon. Its no secret, having a strong core will help you in any sport including, golfing, basketball, football, soccer, running, swimming and cycling. What’s different from The Pilate’s Reform verse a Pilates Mat session is you get faster results from the Reformer because of the external resistance from the springs, pulleys, and straps as well as having a professional personal instructor so you do the correct workout. OK fellows, here’s the skinny. You want to be a better golfer, runner, and athlete and yes, I’m putting it out there, lover, then consider Pilates part of your workout regimen and see fast amazing re-

sults on and off the court within a short period of time. Talk about a great way to bond with your mate! It’s healthy, sexy, as well as a wonderful time to be together in fitness. Please remember that muscle weighs more then fat so most likely you will see first results in inches lost rather than weight. Holding a healthy weight is important but also having a lean body is equally important. If your still unsure that Pilates Reformer may not be for you, I invite you to give the Mat Pilates class a try at your fitness center and go from there. Still have questions, give

Jessica a call. Core Fitness and Yoga Studio at 544-1144, is conveniently located downtown at 1209 J Street in Modesto for those of you who work downtown and want to get in a quick fitness lunch session or release some work related stress. Walk your way to the core of downtown and give it a try. Jessica’s final thought, “I really believe every person from the couch potato to the endurance athlete can benefit from Pilates. Pilates is in my opinion, one of the best workouts for anyone! It’s so low impact your joints will thank you for it” Be fit and have fun in Modesto.

Sky high. Nearby!

By Kyle Montero

It’s 8:30 PM and the gentle sun of early summer has finally dipped below the ever-expanding tree tops of centuries-old fir, cedar, and sugar pine trees hovering over the campsites at Pinecrest Campground in Pinecrest, CA. “These trees look different at night . . . even scary,” my friend ponders as we navigate the trailed border of the campground, failing to recognize woods familiar under the light of day now made a mysterious shaded mass beneath the night sky. “We should head back,” I suggest, accepting the call of our camp’s fire, drawn instinctually to its warmth and the conversations created while gazing at the mesmerizingflames. Retracing the path previously taken, our careful steps leading closer and closer to the welcoming familiarity of our wilderness home are interrupted by nature’s lamp carried across the dark recesses of the night air. “I have never seen the moon so bright!” she exclaims, as the previously lurking pines become glorified by a moonlight that illuminates the trail, revealing the passage back into the more peopled areas of the campground. Guided by the calming

24

gray of the night, we meander through the collection of campsites each aglow by well-tended fire pits circled by campers young and old rooted in place by the simple comfort of the company of friends and family in the outdoors. “I love that sound,” I say, enchanted by the blurred rhythms of laughter and speech emanating from campsites near. As we reach our site, we join our friends and family gathered around the fire and the night slips slowly away as the sound of crackling timber cedes to the rich silence of nature. Pinecrest Campground lies adjacent to Pinecrest Lake at an elevation of 5600’. All campsites feature a paved pad for parking, fire ring, picnic table, and most sites are treed. Each campsite loop has multiple bathrooms with flush toilets and sinks. Stationed throughout the campground are dump stations and water faucets with potable water. Al-

Miles of easy walking trails around Pinecrest. though many campsites bookmonths in advance, some may be reserved up to 48 hours in advance through www. reserveamerica.com. If unable to secure a site, Pinecrest offers multiple outdoor activities easily experienced in a day as the town is located a mere 70 miles from Modesto. Pinecrest Lake, stocked with rainbow trout every week, satisfies the angler in all. Bring up your own watercraft, rent from the Pinecrest Lake Marina, or simply bask in the sun on the

lake’s sandy beach. Although the hike around the lake is beautiful, a personal favorite activity is to explore the quite backcountry east of the lake, following the trail and scaling the rocks high above Pinecrest in search of Cleo’s Bath, steep-sided pools carved into the granite. The approximately four hour round-trip hike runs along the river which feeds the lake and grants the hiker with amazing views of waterfalls, flowing intensely as snow continues to melt at higher elevations.

As I looked around though, I found amazing gifts for just about each person I know, and that says a lot if your able to do that in the same place. The boutique was very well or-

Handmade scarves, jewel hats, purses and zebra print wallets, newly made vintage style jewelry, lighted wine bottles, baby blankets, hair clips and headbands, the cutest children's aprons with chef hats, and much, much more. The beeswax that makes the beeswax candles is local and the lavender that is used to infuse items like biscotti cookies, cakes, and other goodies is also grown and made locally. They carry a full dog boutique with the cutest jewel collars, little dog outfits for the little bad boy or the cute frilly little girl pup to play dress up in, and much more. complishment for us..and we took it as serious as possible, while still trying to soak it all in...WHAT AN NIGHT TO REMEMBER MV: What are your upcoming gigs? Friday July 1, we are playing for The Rocky Horror Picture Show for Sweet Pea Knickers Production July 9 Acoustic Rock Society Artist of the Month: Dave Hanley with Joe Barretta, Chris Doud, Roy Dean, Doug Robinett and more... Aug. 6 X fest 2011 95.1 KHOP Dos Equis stage 7pm Aug 27 Acoustic Rock Society Hickory, Matty Comer and The Experience, Dr. Blue and Bad Medicine, and more We are planning on recording by the end of the summer. we have been working new music in as well as members. We have brought Chris Falkenberg in on drums. He is one heck of a drummer and young! Randy Brown has been our bassist for just at a year....His first show was at of the 4th of July last year. Doug Robinett is our newest member! He plays lead guitar opposite Dr. Blue to give us that thick Southern Rock sound....AMAZING... The two of them together takes to whole package to the next level!!! Doug's first show was The Amgen Tour in downtown Modesto.... Michelob Ultra Stage....Not bad for a debut.... MV: OK. The ultimate music question. Beatles or Stones. MC: BEATLES

HJ: Mixlab Music group consists of myself and Tony Vibes (on the event side) along with some close friends who support what MixLab music is about. We strive to keep the old school and freestyle scene alive in the valley and bay area. We often bring live acts from freestyle singers to old school acts to our events. We feel that this brings a different element to our parties and also supports those artists that we grew up listening to, which is important. FB: Which genre of music do you prefer to play and why? HJ: It depends on what day you ask. Some days my answer would be Old School and Freestyle, other days House, but most days I would say New Wave/ Dark Wave, and some trip-hop. My favorites are Depeche Mode, Morrissey, Bjork, Portishead,Goldfrapp, Joy Division, and Siouxie.. just to name a few. FB: What are some of your future goals as a DJ would you like to accomplish in the next year? HJ: My goal is just to just continue to challenge myself and get better. I would also like to record a few mixes which would come in handy since I spend so much time in my car commuting to the South bay daily. And lastly, perhaps work on some edits and remixes so I can bring a different element to my mixing and really add a personal touch to the music I play. FB: Vinyl, CD or Serato? Which do you prefer and why? HJ: CD since that is what I am comfortable with at the moment. I never usedserato, and probably won't anytime soon. Nothing against it, but I just feel that that tool should be used by experienced DJ's who know the music by ear. I am still training my ear so if I had something visual it would probably stunt my growth if that makes sense. I have 1200's, and that is where I am headed. It sounds a bit backwards maybe, but I just love everything about vinyl. The album art, digging for records, the look, the sound and the skill involved. This is what I grew up watching and listening to so that is my ultimate goal. FB Any shout outs to Modesto View readers? HJ: Shout out to my MixLab family, the Disco Dan and Glen Hammerstrom alongwith the rest of the Indepth Crew who will be celebrating their 3-year anniversary in August. Darrel Wilkins and the Pure 209 Crew, 9T9 and Reckless Rich, all those who come to our MixLab events and support. Last but not least, my awesome niece's Nyasia and Madz. LOVE THEM! Thanks and keep it movin! DJ Dan can be reached at: www.facebook.com/mixlabmusic for info and booking.
