Celebrating Our Performing Arts...
Greetings Modesto Friends
Are you ready for another new season? Since back to school is now
in August, September is now the new season for the performing arts season. We are all settling in to our fall routine, the water polo games, the cross country meets, weekend soccer games, the Friday night football and of course the new season of performing arts. The performing arts can take us to any time and our cover picture celebrates the age of blues, jazz and torch songs that still sound good today and inspire new performers. Natalie Cole will bring the legendary sounds to Modesto as the new Gallo Center season opens. This is an exciting time of the year to see what new theatrical treats we can enjoy as many of our local groups showcase their new seasons. The evenings get a bit cooler and friends gather on patios for some frothy fun friendship and enjoy the talent we have here in the greater Modesto area. This summer has been a wake up call for my family we unwittingly came in contact with West Nile as my daughter Abbey suffered through West Nile Meningitis. It was a tough time for her and she is on the mend, and the reason I mention it here is that you need to pay attention and be as smart as you can. See our prevention tips in this issue. The drought has a variety of consequences and increased West Nile is one of them. Stay smart and be vigilant and keep your family and friends safe. Family and friends are what make living here great. August brought us two amazing events, the Modesto Grand Prix SuperKarts that introduced downtown Modesto to thousands of racing fans and visitors from all over the world. It was great to see the global Facebook and Instagram beaming out around the world showcasing racing in Modesto. Isn’t it nice be known for racing when you Google “Modesto”. ModestoView was there from the beginning and hope that the Grand Prix comes back next year. As we cruised through August, we enjoyed the bands at ModStock and then finished off with 17,000 of our music and party friends at XFest. The MPD reports that this was one of the smoothest running Xfests in many years. These are the kind of things that make it fun to live here. Our friends are who make all of this stuff happen and if you see the behind the scenes at many of these events, it is the countless volunteers that make us different. Huge shout outs to the N Modesto Kiwanis club and the Modesto Rotary and Lions clubs that make these events possible. Our volunteers are the best. Now we are getting ready to Vote for MAMA, celebrating the best in local music. It is the teamwork with all of the venues, restaurants, cafes, and performing art centers that bring us all together. From the bands made up of 9 year old girls to the veteran rockers that started rocking in the late 50s, we enjoy each and every one of them as they hit the stage and make new music. This is why ModestoView exists. We are here to celebrate the good here in Modesto each and every day. We see the good that people do and we see the amazing things that happen. This is who we do business with and this is what we showcase. We are here “Serving Civic Pride Daily”. Thanks to you our readers and our amazing advertisers that make it possible to print and deliver the magazine you hold in your hand right now. We are here to make sure we know that good things happen here and remind each other that we all have to spread the word so every one knows that we are Modesto USA, A Classic American City, with a classic history and a stellar future. Thanks for reading and please let us know what you want to see here in the pages of ModestoView. Enjoy your city. Chris Murphy Founder and Publisher chrism@modestoview.com

This month we take ourselves back to the vintage times of the torch songs as we await Natalie Cole for the Gallo Center opening. FAMOUS
The Golden Gate and Shiny New Pills
Green Day had a point when they said,
by Ruben J. Porras
“Wake Me Up when September Ends.”
For me September is a month to rest up a bit after a long summer and right before I help tackle the MAMA Awards. I will sit in my funky College Neighborhood bungalow next to the canal and watch the leaves turn a million different shades of red, yellow and orange and I will venture out to Yogurt Mill a few times per week to feed my addiction. It will be an easy going month for sure. As I type this I am listening to new albums by The Rob Hill Band and Christine McGrew and I’m happy. It is always cool to see local acts take big steps toward their goals and these two particular acts in my opinion have what it takes to make it all the way to the big time. Music marketing isn’t what it used to be. Not many artists get rich anymore but there is more freedom than ever before as artists stay independent of record labels and create work that they are proud of. We need to continue supporting local artists. In regard to my health, for those keeping track, I am still doing fairly well. I am having some trouble adjusting to a new regimen of nearly 30 pills per day but that is expected. The trouble is that doctors prescribe these drugs so I can stay alive and enjoy my life. The ‘enjoy my life’ part of that gets hard to do when many of the pills have the same side effects. Imagine taking several different medicines known to cause drowsiness and nausea. It’s no fun my friends but I’m hoping to find a balance soon. As fall approaches I really want to work with photography more. This is the one thing that keeps me grounded and happier than anything else that I do and the fall weather is ideal for it. Lighting will be great, colors will pop and happy folks will be easy to find. Maybe I will head out on another adventure soon. In the last couple of months I have been to Monterey and San Francisco and I have had a great time. Standing underneath the Golden Gate Bridge is something that everyone should do at some point in their lives. How was something so massive and complex cre-

ated? It is a truly unbelievable span. Enjoy your September. The kids are back in school and if you have a day off without much to do go crazy and do something that you have always loved to do. Take the time to read a book or turn up some music your kids hate. Dance in the kitchen while you whip up some sort of decadent creation that is full of calories. Make yourself feel young. The State Theatre and the Gallo Center for the Arts have everything from Chinese Acrobats to Iconic musical acts on their schedules this month so keeping busy in Modesto won’t be too hard to do.

BAR
“Dr. No” Thanks on the Vodka, I’ll Have a Pint Instead: Commonwealth Gastro Pub By Kate Serpa Photos by Phil Johnson
So there’s this scene in “Licence to Kill” where James Bond (Timothy Dalton) orders a “Bud with a lime,” rather than the quintessential Bond martini right before he gets in this bar brawl with two unsavory types. I had never seen “Licence to Kill.” I suppose I had never realized that James Bond drinks anything but the hard sauce. And call me a victim of advertising, but I figured James freaking Bond would be a bit more creative with his hops selection -- maybe Dos Equis because of the most interesting man schtick? Maybe Stella, because you’re supposed to cut the head off with a knife? Further movie research revealed Bond has also downed Red Stripe, Miller, and Heineken in previous films. I think James Bond needs help in the beer department, everyone. I think we need to take him over to Commonwealth and find him something fun. With their informal debut during the Grand Prix races in August, and their formal-formal debut on the 15th, downtown Modesto has a new cool kid on the drink & dine circuit in Commonwealth. The late Extreme Pizza location has been thoroughly gutted and revamped with a fresh and sleek brick and metal interior, featuring a large chalkboard over 24 taps making what’s in rotation for today, monogrammed glasses, so, so, so good sandwiches, and four gentlemen, Jeff Brown, Josh Powell, Blake Humble, and Chef Brian, who can

speak the gastro pub language better than you, I , or Mr. “Bud and a lime” Bond. No shaking here. Just excellent craft beer and wine list, and a menu to boot. Phil and I were lucky enough to snag both Mr. Brown & Powell to discuss. With the influx of excellent beer-driven establishments Modesto has been throwing out in the past year, why venture over to Commonwealth? States Brown, “I think we compliment other Modesto bars in many ways, but we do offer a variation on a lot of the same ideas. We are a contemporary gastro pub and are more focused on a craft beer scene, primarily. We want people to come in, try tasters, and really talk beer.” Adds Powell, “ I would say there’s a distinct definitive approach to what we’re trying to do . We’re trying to be a great craft gastro pub for Modesto. We tried to marry several ideas into one location. you might be able to get some of these beers at other places, but they’re washed out by everything else. We’re a destination that specifically caters to craft products.” The term ‘craft beer’ has always made me a bit nervous -- somewhat like ‘wine tasting’ does, in the fact I feel like I generally have no idea what to do/order. Never fear. The Commonwealth staff is more than willing to talk shop (in the most approachable of ways, I promise) to find you a brew you’ll want to order a second round of. What these four gentlemen have sought to cre-

ate in Commonwealth was an environment they would be excited to find if visiting Modesto -- family operated, quality over quantity, and all in a beautiful space. Mission accomplished. Now I am not talking smack about Mr. Bond here -- he’s the paragon of uber masculinity and class, and a damn handsome hypothetical man I’d be willing to subject myself to a potential shark attack for, I’m
just kind of unimpressed with his beer tastes. Minor technicality. Mr. Bond can keep his tuxedos and shaken martinis for the meantime, but I’m going to go have a pint at Commonwealth. 1022 11th Street, Modesto, CA www.commonwealthmodesto.com www.facebook.com/commonwealthtaproom

PERFORMING A Time to Perform in September
So, dear readers, I know that many of you are very supportive of local theatrical productions. I encourage you to continue your traditions and include Center Stage Conservatory’s Lower Level Studio! I contacted one of the Artistic Directors; Traci Sprague (the other being Megan James) the studio is nearing the end of its current season. Here is what Traci had to say about their newest show in which is in nightly rehearsals. If you are new to CSC or haven’t attended a show in a while, you are in for a treat. The work in this old courtroom turned intimate black box theatre is just getting better with every show. There is simply nor a more ideal time to head down to CSC’s Lower Level Studio then next month to see the opening of True West by Sam Shepherd Sept. 12th. “What kinda people kill each other the most? Family people? Brothers? Sometimes to confront your own nature, you’ve got to fight like hell. Bitter sibling rivalry surfaces when brothers Austin and Lee reunite in True West, the classic play by Pulitzer Prize winning playwright, director, and Academy Award nominated actor, Sam Shepherd. Together in their mother’s hose in the desert, jealously threaten to ignite a powder keg between the men as they wage a destructive battle through their fraternal bonds. Moments of humor and levity mingle with loneliness while Shepard’s tightly written play makes us witness to a forceful study of family ties and human frailty. CSC is currently looking for Sponsors for our upcoming productions. Sponsors will get recognized on all printing and advertising associated with their show as well as a private viewing (up to 60 seats) of the fi-

CHEF
Pizza, Make it an Event! Paul’s Rustic Oven by Dana Johnson
FB: Dana’s Family Kitchen FOX40: See Chef Dana every 1st Friday of the month
So there I was, working at Sciabica’s 78th anniversary party and annual case sale showcasing 6 Dana~licious original recipes with their remarkable olive oils for their special customers when I smelled something else that was making me hungry! The customers were walking in licking their lips and raving about the pizza from a woodfire d pizza oven in the parking lot! Yes, I had to investigate and find the pizza that kick -started this Sciabica party! Paul’s Rustic Oven had me before the first bite! I’d never seen anything like it. A handcrafted wood fired oven, Valoriani by Magnaini that is mobile! Fresh artisan pizza that has redefined delivery! So I asked Justin, John, and Jon who were rolling out the delish lil’pies; “Would you actually come to my house and make them for me and my party guests?”, and with 3 smiling faces they all said “Oh Yay!” They are becoming well known throughout the valley and beyond for catering weddings, graduations, parties, school, and fundraiser events. Save the date Nov. 29, 2014 as Paul’s Rustic Oven will be at Del Rio Country Club for a Hope Haven West charity golf tournament. See details www.hopehavenwest.com providing mobility (wheelchairs) to the disabled poor in the developing world. The day after the Sciabica party, Paul’s Rustic Oven was going to be at the Heidi Brunk Foundation benefit concert known as the Sierra Music Festival in Oakdale and I wanted to try some more! My daughters joined me in meeting Chef Paul Ollson, the owner of Paul’s Rustic Oven and together we indulged in more specialty pizzas. See www.paulsrusticoven.com, on FB, too, for the quality list of menu items available to create some truly Dana~licious pizzas like the classic pepperoni, aged tri-tip and blue cheese crumbles, plus lamb, Kalamata olives, and feta pizzas is a mere hint of Chef Paul’s impressive list of possibilities. Paul not only supports local charities, he shops for local freshness at Oakdale Cheese, Fiscalini, Sciabica’s, Sprouts, Stanislaus Foods, O’Brien’s, and Save Mart to create his signature Neapolitan style pizzas.

Thursday nights, 5:30-9pm (weather permitting) @ Bella Vagos (previously Portofino’s) 521 McHenry here in Modesto, plus live music and spirits, too! Count me in! Modesto View’s signature question; Beatles or Stones? “ Oh, it’s gotta be the Stones!!!” It all makes perfect sense; Chef Paul has been listening to the Stones while creating his rockin’ pizzas!!!
Celebrating Our Performing Arts...
To assemble pizza 1. preheat oven to 550 or higher and place pizza stone on middle rack 2. roll dough into a 10 inch circle. Remove stone and place dough on the floured pizza stone. 3. Lightly spread mozzarella over the dough. Overlay pear slices and sprinkle with Gorgonzola crumbles. Bake for 12-15 minutes or until lightly brown. 4. Remove pizza and top with pecans. ROCKABILLY Rockin HWY 99
by Jennifer Allsup Any WHOOT!! Speaking with Kevin of “Three on Tree” here is a little back ground. “We started the band to give everyone our love for traditional rockabilly, country, blues and a pop mix along with our inspirations of our favorite artists of today. The band includes Tyler Sauls on lead guitar and vocals, Kevin Schwarz on drums, Andru Vigil on bass, and newest member Mark Flemming on rhythm and trumpet. Tyler and Kevin talked about starting a band since they first met at 14, and now to becoming an up and coming band in modesto. “Our songs have varieties of inspirations from our love of the 50’s, old hotrods and pinup girls to aspects of life like who you are, friends and family” Remember always keep your eyes on the road, never know what just might catch your FANCY!
Summer is coming to a close end. But, there is always room for travelin’ down that lonesome HwY 99. On your traveling journey I suggest take that HWY 99 North. There you will find, what is called Sacramento’s best Rockabilly band, “KB & the Slingtones”. Melodies that will flow through your body, making your fingers snap, the heels tapping that wooden dance floor. All the sudden a roar comes across the stage as the drums set the mood, you’ll be guaranteed to start boogieing’ all night long! Anytime you’re in the Sacramento area, look for the flashing marque with “KB & THE Slingtones” lit up bright! Just do it, take that trip down HWY99 to “The Torch Club” on Sept 20th. Get there early to catch the very lovely “Mae McCoy and her Racheros”. Mae’s music interests varied in country oldies , such as Bob Wills & Wynn Stewart, that makes her music so strong hearted. Oh, HWY 99 as I cruise down your open highway, music blasting in my ears, as I hear the rumbling of “The Modesto Throttlers” coming near. In 1949 The Modesto Throttlers were established, California’s third oldest car club. With over 100 members throughout the years. Their current President Dave Walker, is passionate about what “The Modesto Throttlers” stands for....UNITY & FAMILY!! Dave, has a few oldies in his collection including his 1954 Bel Air. Speaking with Dave’s wife Tiffany & Mike Webb the V.P. of “The Modesto Throttlers”, we as a group have been involved in giving back to the community, donation and working with “Sierra Vista Children & Family Center. Coming up on Sept 6th The Modesto Throttlers will be throwing their 3rd annual “Blast from the Past” car show, located at 451 Glass Lane, Modesto, 9a.m.-4p.m. All ages welcome FREE to the public. If your interested in registering your 1972 or older classic. The registration is $20 at the entrance, under the pop up tent.Super cool
raffle prizes a Schwinn Bicycle and more great prizes. Of course you can’t have a car show or cruise down HWY 99 with out some sweet tunes whistlin’ in your ear! You’d better be ready for some “Three on the Tree”, I remember driving my dad’s old pick-up for the first time. I thought his terminology Three on the Tree was a joke. Until, I understood oh, I’m shifting on the column.

Jack Souza: Prospect Theatre Project by Chris Murphy
Some of the greatest performances happen on the smallest stages. You see evidence of this wall over the world in out of the way or off-broadway stages. We have a shining example of this here in Modesto with the Prospect Theatre Project. Truly exceptional performance happen here. Live theatre, eclectic art and fascinating music from around the world are showcased in an intimate space where you not only see the performance, you feel it and become part of something really cool. This place has survived under the leadership of a Jack Souza Jack Souza graduated from Beyer High and then attended CSU Stanislaus. He expanded his talents while studying at UCD Ireland. He is a multi-purpose Actor /Producer / Performer and Manager. He founded the Prospect Theater Project in 2000, that has been a place for theatrical innovation, intimate settings and community created performances that have been critically acclaimed and have set the bar high for independent theater. Let’s meet Jack Souza ModestoView: When did you realize that acting and performance was in your blood? Jack Souza: The fullness of that finally landed in 1989. I’d been participating a lot in the local theater scene for about 10 years before that but that year I had an experience at CSUS as a community actor in a university production. Somehow that experience put a frame around the activity that made many other things fall into place. After years of floundering academically, for example, I found the initiative to finish my BA, not with a deficit but, on the Dean’s List. I became very focused from that point on. MV: What was your first acting experience? JS: I auditioned for a production of Sherlock Holmes in 1977. I had my own deerstalker hat and calabash pipe. I thought, “This ought to put me in the running for the lead.” I was cast as Judson, the butler, and was murdered unceremoniously in the Second Act.

Jack Souza with his daughter Molly MV: Your favorite roll you have played? JS: It would be a lot easier to ask what was the least favorite. That I could answer. I’ve generally had the luxury of doing roles that are meaningful to me. Henry in Lion in Winter certainly leaps to mind. Frank Hardy in Faith Healer is another--one that I will get to revisit this season, I hope. MV: How did your education and training in Ireland change you? JS: Again, I’d have to point to an increased focus and awareness of the power of theater—of all the arts—as a means of personal expression, yes, but also as forum in which social and communal values are played out for an audience of participants who then, for themselves, weigh and evaluate those values and ideas. And by participating, those values are either affirmed or questioned and retooled or discarded. I also learned the value of a well-poured pint. MV: What impact do you think performing arts have on a community? JS:You can’t swing a cat without hitting a study that asserts the benefits of a strong arts presence within a community: Improved academic performance and student discipline, revitalization of neighborhoods and the promotion of economic prosperity, improved physical and psychological well being, and a catalyst of social capital

and the attainment of community goals like cultural diversity and reduction of crime. For over twenty years, credible research has provided wide-ranging data to support all of these claims. MV: Describe one of the most challenging experiences you have had in staging a production? JS:The most challenging? They are all challenging, but, any staging, from a production standpoint, involving sand, soil or water is particularly heinous. MV: Why is the Prospect Theater Project so important to our community? JS: Prospect is a part of a network in this community that includes opera, musical theater, dance, indie music, photography, painting, poetry and sculpture. I do think that Prospect functions uniquely within that matrix, but it is part of a greater whole. For the importance of that greater whole, refer to two questions back and there we are. MV: You have a new facility that has been created by the blood and sweat of your team, friends and donors, what obstacles do you still face? JS: I think the obstacles ahead of us at Prospect are organizational. This new facility on K Street is presenting an opportunity, not
to change what we do, but to change how we go about doing it as an organization. MV: What can people do to lend a hand and support your efforts? JS: Participate. Volunteer, donate and attend. Like us on Facebook, visit our website, join in the conversation by letting us know what you think of the work being presented. Be vocal. MV: Who would you like to share a stage with? JS: Kevin Spacey. MV: What is your dream role? JS: The next one. MV: What would you change about the arts scene here in Modesto? JS: I look at communities in the foothills where the work of small theaters are being covered and reviewed by 3 different papers. It seems incredible to me that the

Bee, representing a community of almost half a million people, has stopped critically considering the work of local arts organizations and artists. Which is not to say that there is no coverage. There is. But the arts, theater arts in particular, are intended to spark communal dialog and when the Bee decided to eliminate thoughtful critical reviews of work created within the community by members of the community, they effectively cut off a large segment of the local population from participating in that dialog. MV: Describe your perfect Modesto day? JS: The Farmer’s Market, a barbeque at home with friends, playing music, and top it off with Concert in the Park. MV: Beatles or Stones? JS: Stones.

Be prepared to be bombarded with requests to Vote from your friends and favorite bands, if you thought that request to buy X-Fest Tickets was out of hand just wait. The Brewhouse at Hero’s always has some great events going on and won last year for Best Venue stop by order a pizza and enjoy some craft beer. There is something inspirational, informa- ture movies at the State Theatre; guided and tive, and fun for everyone of every interest and age at this year’s Modesto Architecture Festival: more than 120 tours, exhibits, international movies, bike rides, workshops, speakers, installations, interventions, children’s activities, and special events with dozens of community partners. All events and activities are free except the video workshop. The festival’s mission is to celebrate architecture and urban design, and celebration is exactly what will happen in this nine-day city-wide event. The festival opens on Saturday, September 13th with exhibits; tours; a talk by Murray Silverstein, At Play in the Fields of Architecture and Poetry; an afternoon of fun free activities for families and kids; and an opening night reception. Events will continue daily through the following week and weekend including an evening of architec-
self-guided walking, biking, and driving tours of Modesto’s heritage architecture; a movie about the architecture of Antonio Gaudi, Liquid Stone, at the Carnegie Center in Turlock; and an evening tour and exhibit at the newly renovated post office building. Many of the festival events will take place at the new Modesto Architecture Festival Center in the Modesto Design District at 1009 J Street including an exhibit of historic blueprints and drawings of some of Modesto’s iconic buildings. For the first time ever, see drawings by renowned 20th century architect Bernard Maybeck for the Modesto Gas Company, part of Unbuilt Modesto, and exhibit of projects that never made it off the drawing board. Spirit of Space from Germany and Chicago returns to lead a workshop and free café on architectural video. This year will also see an expansion of Park(ing) Day. The worldwide event on Friday, September 19th, will bring several temporary parklets and the installation of new public art in the city’s design district. BUSINESS
Local business owner Jill Hailey poses with a happy new customer.
Foxy Roxy’s Mobile Pet Salon Phone: (209) 407-2777 List of Services, Photos and Details: www.foxylikeroxy.com
Photos by Rubben J. Porras
There are two reasons that we can think of that might make someone break out their cell phone and dial up a local mobile pet salon — either they are too dog tired (excuse the pun) to take their pet to a brick and mortar salon after a long week of work and family running around or their pet may simply not be a fan of the whole experience. For the ViewCrew, we called because we were simply curious. After a shopping trip at Target we noticed a card attached to our family truckster. You know the card we’re talking about — “Hey! You need to go to this awesome gangster rap disco party!” or “Hey you too can make $1,348 per hour from home with just a computer and a dream!” We usually throw these cards away quickly but not this time. You see, we are the owners of the most beautiful supermodel Chihuahua in the world (we may be biased) and she just happened to be in the need of a nail clipping and apparently, according to groomers we spoke to, an anal gland cleaning. We are not sure about your personal skill level but we feel under qualified (and frankly scared) to do anything with anal glands. At this point we called the number on the card which led us to our first conversation with Jill Hailey, co-owner of Foxy Roxy’s Mobile Pet Salon. Hailey explained in a rather bubbly voice that if we gave her my email address that she would send us a link to get more information and a questionnaire to fill out and submit back to her. You read that right. Pet salons have now entered the incredibly convenient world of interactive websites, social media, email reminders, digital bookkeeping and customer tracking. That is pretty handy if you ask us! A couple of days later we waited on the curb like nervous parents with Zoe (the aforementioned supermodel Chihuahua) not knowing what to expect. Would a wild-eyed hippie show up in the Mystery Machine or a VW bus? Would something akin to the floppy-eared Shaggin’ Wagon of Dumb and Dumber fame arrive? Nope. What showed up was impres-
sive to say the least. Foxy’s Roxy’s is a business built on the good old-fashioned law of supply and demand. Owners, Jill and Jonathan Hailey were not happy taking their Newfoundland Roxy to local groomers because she had been previously isolated from other animals and caged for hours until a groomer became available. “Stress isn’t good for animals and can affect them deeply,” said Hailey. “By the time their turn comes at a groomer they are often very stressed, scared and confused after being caged and isolated. The Hailey’s had heard about a local mobile groomer so they made a call only to find out that they would be put on an eight to nine week waiting list. Right away they saw an opportunity even though they are not groomers themselves. They have backgrounds in sales and have developed other businesses. The first step was locating and reviving a shuttle bus that belonged to a band in a previous life. The van was gutted and outfitted with top-of-the-line furnishings, bathing and grooming stations, air conditioning and a selection of boutique-rated supplies. To make the whole package come together they tapped the skills of local groomer, Jennifer Melloy who has nearly a decade of experience with both national chains and local shops. When asked about how she felt about going mobile Melloy was excited.

“I’m not used to this much freedom and comfort,” said Melloy. “I really love what I do and the Hailey’s have been great to work with. This is all really fun!” One very important factor for the business is their focus on fun and creativity, and that is evident right off the bat when you look at their list of services and have to decide whether you want your pet to look foxy, groovy or superfly. We went all out for our K9 ViewCrew member Zoe. She received a full package including wash, anal gland cleaning, fluff & blow dry, ear cleaning, manicure, teeth cleaning with mouth freshening and fragrant body spray. She was even outfitted with a pretty bow. We recommend Foxy Roxy’s because we understand how important our pooch is to our family. She’s one of us and we love her dearly. Being a Chihuahua she tends to be an emo-
tional nervous mess prone to bouts of shaking and barking at shadows and random inanimate objects. Zoe was comfortable with Melloy and that honestly surprised us. When we asked Hailey to sum up the business and her feelings about it she offered up a concise and creative answer. “This is an adventure for us,” said Hailey. “We have six teenagers and they tend to think we are crazy with our business ideas but we hope that they can learn from this. We are excited to provide a service that the community finds useful and fun and we plan on treating every client’s pet as just as well as we treat our own. After all, that is how all of this started.” See more photos at: modestoview.com/ businessview-seeking-groovy-pets/

BIG
Performing Arts Enrich our Lives and Com by Chris Murphy
Everyone remembers playing a part in a school play, preschool talent show, or even a simple game of charades. It is all acting and performing and we all have theatrical moments, good and bad. Music and theatre take us to a different place and many times it is magical. Performing arts were really important in our family and my daughters Madison and Abbey experienced the life changing benefits of performing at Lakewood and LaLoma. I have to specially thank Kaye Osborn, our Performing View writer and long time Lakewood Youth Theatre teacher, for teaching so many kids as well as my girls to find their inner confidence and explore their creativity. To every drama teacher and every director of a professional performance, we are thankful for their gift of performing and helping stars polish their shine. The performing arts are the window to the soul of our community. Cities with strong arts programs are the creative cities. Creative cities encourage new business and create strong community bonds. This leads to civic pride and economic and educational success. Best of all, the arts take you to a place of inspiration and fantasy that transcends the ages. The 15th Annual MAMA Awards Hosted by the fabulous State Theatre October 14, 2014 7:00 pm Vote at: www.modestoareamusic.com
This is a year of milestones. It is totally unreal that it was 15 years ago that Chris Ricci and I tried to think of a really great way to celebrate the amazing local music talent we have. So why not go big? From our very first Modesto Area Music Awards in 2000 at the Doubletree Club Maxx, the MAMAs have been getting bigger and better each year and have a beautiful home at the State Theatre. The MAMAs are a celebration of the huge talent here in town. It is not so much as who is the best, or most popular, but the recognition of all of the hard working people in the local music industry here, from the bands, the venues, the promoters and the people that work behind the scenes to make it all happen. Best of all, you are the academy. There is no hidden committee, just you the people that love local music. You vote and you choose and with every vote, you help spread the word to people to check out the Modesto area music scene so we can all make it better and more successful. We all need to speak out. We want more music, more stages, more places to play and city policies that make music and the arts a priority here in town. So Vote today and spread the word about local music by going to shows, purchasing music and being MAMA cheerleaders. METAL
Adopting as our own and someone who really cares... by Mike Vanek
Hi there friends and neighbors it’s your old friend Slaytanek Mike Vanek here with 2 topics this month. First I would like to talk about a band that the Modesto metal scene has really adopted as our own. That band is Brutal Innocence from Los Banos CA and they are just that innocently brutal! Team Brutal hails from the small town of Los Banos and there isn’t many options to play so many times like many other bands in small towns you need to reach out. Brutal has reached out and has become a valued member of the local Modesto scene. This band busts their buns when it comes to local metal driving here to Modesto not just to play shows but they all pack into their caravans of cars and head to Modesto to support their friends in the scene at other shows and they travel to the towns they play to promote their shows like your supposed to do!! This band brings sets to play on and full dressed costume at their shows and with a wheel chair bound massive guitar attack matched with a power groove rhythm section that is complimented with wicked female vocals this band is the band to see in 2014 and have worked hard to reach that status so I command you to go
see Brutal Innocence next time they come to town. Finally before I go I need to mention someone else who has adopted our scene as her own. Her Name is Sylvia Spinnakers and she has made a dive bar nobody like playing at to the home of Central Valley Heavy Metal. Sylvia loves her bands!! She even had Dying Image come to her house to play her sons birthday party. She really makes the bands feel important and shows support for than almost any bartender ever has in town with the exception of a few Fat Cat legends. When a band comes to play at The Spin they are welcomed by a smile and a positive attitude and in this business that is few and far between. Speaking for my friends that have expressed this opinion the scene could use a few more people like Sylvia Spinnakers who go out of their way to support local metal on a daily basic especially when they do not have to!! Go see Sylvia Thurs-Sun at Spinnakers 2031 Yosemite Blvd Modesto (Next to the awesome burrito shop) Thats all for me this month as always... KEEP ONE FOOT IN THE GUTTER AND ONE FIST IN THE GOLD!!!
Stop West Nile! Be careful out there. It is a dry season and the mosquitoes are particularly aggressive this season. Reduce the risk of getting West Nile by taking these precautions. Also, be on the lookout for places that might be a risk and notify the county and the mosquito abatement department if you see standing water or places that may need attention. We all have to look out for each other and stay well. http://www. stancounty.com/healthandsafety/west-nile-virus.shtm If you see or know of any pools that look like this, call the East Side Mosquito Abatement #209-522-4098 and let them know. These are some of the key breeding areas for mosquitoes that carry West Nile and it is irresponsible for a pool owner to let this happen. Look for any unoccupied homes too. The drought is making mosquitoes more aggressive and looking for water. Stay Safe, Stay Vigilant.

ACOUSTIC
Profiles In Philharmonic Poetry:
Raylene Kemp
by Aaron Rowan
There are two people I credit with catalyzing my transition into a lover of acoustic sounds, both of whom I’ve enjoyed the honor of working with more than once. One is a nationally touring songwriter who I have written of in previous columns; the other is a homegrown country-rock lady from right here in Stanislaus County. She sits with her eyes closed, just her and her guitar, and slowly begins to sing into her recorder. It is a song from the hazy and mystical depths of her subconscious. Sometimes it manifests more as chanting than coherent words. Soon she has a sonic framework laid down which she can build upon, applying songwriting structure to her stream-of-consciousness. Such is the genesis of a great many of Raylene Kemp’s masterfully crafted pieces, which range from country-rock to blues to 50’s rockand-roll-inspired melodies. Raylene draws inspiration from the musical vibe of songwriters such as Ray Lamontagne and Sonya Kitchell; the consistency of Van Morrison; and the composition of Dave Matthews, who she would like to grow into the female version of. She channels her creative energies not only into solo songwriting, but many creative collaborations with other Valley artists. I myself was once involved in co-writing a tune with her a few years ago. Her intricate songwriting process and polished delivery has garnered her a Best Performance Award from the West Coast Songwriters Association, and gotten her some attention from Nashville music industry producers. She was also featured onstage this summer at the Stanislaus County Fair. Currently Raylene is engaged in finishing up her recording studio at her new home, which will be part studio, part lounge - a hideaway of sorts for artists. She’ll be producing her work and hopefully that of others. There’ll be three chances to hear Raylene this month, all of them at the Barkin’ Dog Grill: -Monday 9/8, sitting in with Terrie Londee & The Before Dawn Band at the ‘Blue Monday’ jam starting at 7 PM. She’ll be busting out a brand-new bluesy song titled
Photo – Elle Robles ‘Pie’ which she is super-proud to share with you. -Friday 9/12 as part of a fundraising night for next month’s NorCal Women’s Music Fest, also featuring sets by Patty Davis, Sandy Almansa, Marirose Powell, Mattea Overstreet and others. 5-10 PM, $5 cover. -Friday 9/26, feature set with her backup players, geared more toward a country/ blues sound. 7 PM, $10 cover. A few other September happenings: Saturday 9/6 - the second annual ‘Bluegrass At The Lake’ up at Lodi Lake Park. Snap Jackson & The Knock On Wood Players, Joe Craven & Hattie Rose, Blame Sally, Evie Ladin, and Cliff Compton & Mountain Top comprise this year’s lineup. $20 advance tickets available at www.loditickets.com. Friday 9/19 - Anna Tivel, a wonderful songwriter on tour from Portland, gives an unplugged set at my Hotel Euterpe series. These are the most intimate listening events I host at my own place. I have not done one in a few months and miss it terribly. Email me at crashdog3@yahoo.com for details if you’d like to attend. Sunday 9/21 - the 23rd season of ‘Sunday Afternoons At CBS’ opens with a operatic performance by soprano Christine Capsuto and mezzo-soprano Kindra Scharich. Both these ladies have loaned their vocal talents to productions by Modesto’s Townsend Opera Players and can be found wowing audiences throughout the bay area. They are a great starter for the new year of this diverse and high-quality series. Concert is at 3 PM at Congregation Beth Shalom, 1705 Sherwood Ave. $20 at the door.

AUTHOR
“Palisades Park” by Ken White
“You’ll never know how great a kiss can feel When you stop at the top of a Ferris wheel When I fell in love down at Palisades Park” Palisades Park, Freddy Cannon The best place to go on a date was the fair. Especially a first date. It didn’t matter if it was the County Fair or the State Fair. Hot summer nights, bright neon lights, hot dogs and corn dogs, games of chance and games of skill, rides that made you tingle and rides that made you puke. The smells of the 4-H barns, the displays of handiwork and horticulture, and the Carnies challenging your manhood. I always played the pinball machine horse-racing game. Each time you won, you got a different-sized horse. The ultimate prize was a horse clock. For her, I’d try to win a stuffed animal. I had a pretty decent arm, so I could knock over the leaded milk bottles and win a small, pink, furry creature of some sort. It was all about possibilities. Infinite possibilities. What were the chances you would hold hands, get a kiss, decide to go steady, or get lucky? The names of the girls changed, but not the anticipation or the pit in your stomach. The fair was the one place you could go where her folks wouldn’t freak. It was the one place where you could find a dark, secluded place like the Tunnel of Love and kiss her and touch her and smell her. When I go to the fair today and walk those dusty, asphalt paths, eating a corn dog and drinking a beer, I can still feel what it felt like to be stuck at the top of the Ferris wheel.

DJ Dan Aguilar by Tru Luv Lopez dio stations, blog sites and podcasts for new sounds not only for playing gigs, but for just my own listening pleasure. I don’t really listen to mainstream terrestrial radio so when I do find and connect with new sounds, it has a bit more substance, kind of like finding buried treasure.
It has been a busy summer and we took some time to catch up with DJ Dan Aguilar. TL: Tell us how you came into loving the art of DJing? DJ Dan: I remember staying up late to get a chance to listen to and record the late night mix shows on bay area radio stations. The songs played were slightly different than the regular daily programming and mixed continuously to a non-stop dance beat.
TL: Tell us a little bit about your self? DJD: I was born in San Jose CA and moved to Modesto in the early 90’s, it seemed like a whole other country. I started DJing after a trip to San Francisco with a friend who needed a ride to purchase records for a birthday party and he did not have a car in 1996. Not even having any DJ equipment, I purchased about a dozen records on my own. Eventually I purchased a turntable and used to mix along with FM radio stations for practice. My focus was mainly on playing house or underground dance music. I ended up playing house parties and was a resident at one of the hot clubs at the time in downtown Modesto. Making friends along the way and mainly having a slightly different sound has probably kept me relevant and in semi-regular gigs from the Central Valley to the Bay area.
TL: What is your all time favorite record DJD: I don’t think I could ever pick just one record that is my all time favorite. A couple would have to be Depeche Mode - Violator & Prince - Purple Rain. TL: What experience with DJing have inspired you? Can you tell us a story of your adventures? DJD: My best moments would have to be meeting different DJs and hearing their different sounds in new cities and venues. I look to my friends in the industry more so than the superstars or big names for inspiration. Playing in different cities and crowds is amazing also. There’s nothing like hopping off the BART or crossing the Bay Bridge into San Francisco in anticipation of the nights’ gig, good music and new friends. As a DJ, you need to be slightly ahead of the curve in regards to new music. I am constantly scanning internet ra-

Fitness Tips by Efren Martinez
I often get approached by my many of my friends in fitness when it comes to tips with weight loss, endurance and the most popular one, seeing results. If you’ve plateaued in your fitness, then you are not alone. The biggest struggle most have when it comes to exercising is seeing the results they want. Sure, your following the program and being consistent, but that might not be enough if you want to get that body you often see in those glamour magazines. I’m sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but most of those beautiful perfect body images you see in the media are for the most part airbrushed and photo shopped to perfection. Although it’s not impossible to achieve a well defined body structure, it’s not as easy as the media paints it out to be. First let’s recognize your body type and remember that beauty is in the eye of the beholder and I think you all are beautiful.
Now, lets work on you believing exactly what I think of you, you are beautiful at whatever size or shape you are. Now that we see ourselves and others as beautiful, lets talk about getting some noticeable results. As a certified fitness instructor, I’ve not only studied fitness but also nutrition and what it takes to get very lean for speed or well defined for strength. Let’s get back to noticeable results, regardless if you’re a man who’s looking to sport your old high school jeans or a woman who would like to fit comfortably into her bikini for the next family holiday, it’s going to take some good old fashioned smelly sweat. All too often while I’m at my gym, I can’t help but notice many of my friends reading a magazine, talking on their cell phone or just causally

watching TV while they are on an exercise machine. That’s all fine and dandy if your fitness goals are where you’d like them to be. But for those who are looking to get a hard body with some jaw dropping buns of steal, you need to really get after your workout. I’m saying, put down the magazine, put away your phone and work that exercise machine as if you wanted to break it. When I get off an exercise machine, my body is drenched in sweat and my heart had been hovering at around 85% to 95% of maximum heart rate. When I go into the gym, I know it’s hammer time and you should too. Knowing how hard I’ll workout, I always take an extra shirt so that when I’m done using the cardio machine, I’ll do a quick change out before I move onto the free weights. In short, just don’t do it, hammer it! Between that and your proper nutrition
Always clear it with your doctor before starting any kind of fitness program. If possible use a chest heart rate monitor to make sure you stay at or above 65% during your cardio workout. Be courteous, wipe off your exercise machine after you use it. Stretch before and after your workout. Eat slow & never overfeed your hunger. Keep healthy snacks ready and available they will keep you from grabbing the wrong foods. Fitness events for September. BARGAIN September Fun
Words and Photos by Monica Barber
It’s nearly 8 pm on a Monday and I’m watching the Sunset from the veranda of the Queen Bean Coffee House. As the glowing orb of orange slides behind the church across the street I’m reminded in a month this will happen an hour earlier without the trick of the changing the clock. Sliding into the rhythm of September without losing the momentum of Summer can be tricky. The welcome of an earlier sunset along with the slowly cooling temperatures may throw your routine off. But the one thing the Fall Solstice shouldn’t do is make you reconsider your dedication to fun over of a few dollars. Where there’s a will to enjoy life, Ms. Monica will help all of you find a way to make it worth your money…

Peace Officer Memorial Run
There is one day every year where it is ok to get chased by the police in Modesto. This year that day is Sept. 28. Stretch your legs and run along side of local first responders and Modesto’s finest athletes as they honor fallen police officers. The action will happen at the corner of I and 11th Streets and will include a race day expo and safety fair with vendors, demos and more. Details: peaceofficermemorialrun.com
Free Film Sneak Preview
The State Theatre is opening their doors to the public for a free showing of Simon Pegg’s latest film, Hector and the Search for Happiness on Sept. 17 at 7:30PM. The film will take you on a trip around the world and will also feature a Q & A session with the director of the film hosted via satellite by Rolling Stone’s Peter Travers. This screening is part of the State’s monthly N.Y. Film Critics Series. If you haven’t experienced one of these, give it a chance. The State has a full bar and popcorn with real butter. You can’t go wrong with that! Details: thestate.org
Chinese Acrobats Take Over the Gallo Center
Prepare to be amazed and delighted! The National Acrobats of China have been sending chills up the spines of audiences since 1951 and they still regularly pack venues all over the world. You will see 35 of their top performers at the Gallo Center for the Arts on Sept. 18. Prepare yourself for martial arts, gymnastics, flying daredevils, spinning props and more! Families love this event and with tickets starting at only $15 it could sell-out quickly. Don’t miss it! You could be inspired to head to China and become a performance artist! Details: galloarts.org
See a Dancing Polar Bear From Greenland
The Maxies were last in Modesto with Reel Big Fish and they rocked the Fat Cat with their offbeat brand of ska music and pure lunacy. They will be back in the 209 at The Brewhouse at Hero’s on Sept. 22. There is nothing quiet about these guys and that is the fun of their gigs. You will dance along with a giant stuffed polar bear named Bi-Polar Bear Tom and other band members with names such as Debauchery Maxie, Maximum Maxie and Android Maxie and you will likely leave the show covered in sweat with your ears ringing. Don’t forget to order a tasty beer brewed on-site and a killer Chicago-style pizza. Good times! Details: 209-524-2337
