Greetings Modesto Fans! I
love the Christmas Holiday spirit. I love the feeling you get, the friendship, the colors, the smells and the camaraderie that you feel through the season and into New years is amazing. I love baking in the kitchen with my girls, watching Christmas Vacation for the 1,000th time and walking and driving around Modesto looking at lights. It is especially nice this year as our beloved McHenry Mansion is back and our hometown has its house back again. Looking back on 2012, it is amazing how much a part of our lives the mansion is and how much the history of Modesto is really becoming important. This year saw the 100-year anniversary of the Modesto Arch, the McHenry Museum, and the Chamber of Commerce with a variety of 100 year old companies. It was amazing that Modesto has always been at the front of culture over the years. In 1912, we were quite amazing with our Modesto Theatre and our irrigation system bringing Water, Wealth, Contentment and Health to our city. As we turned on the new LED lights of the restored arch, it brought back all of the memories. American Graffiti turned 50 this year when “Where were you in ‘62” was actually happening and George Lucas returned to town for his 50th reunion with his childhood friends. The more you get to know the history of Modesto and the people that make Modesto happen, the more interesting it gets. That is why I started ModestoView back in 1997 and that is why it exists today. The more we know about our fellow citizens and how we all connect, makes our lives more interesting and more enjoyable. We really are a community and our wonderful writers share their lives and interests with you each month. You can never have too many friends and we really feel like our ModestoView readers, our 6250 Facebook friends and Twitter followers all feel like family in some way. We make and read ModestoView because we like the good things in Modesto. Modesto is a giving city and we rally for each other, whether it was the Modesto Rocks show for 911 back in 2001 or the Concert for Hurricane Sandy this month, or raising $184,681 at the Salvation Army Kettle Kick off, our people look out for each other. We live local, give local, we eat, drink, learn and listen local and we realize how important it is to shop local and pump up our own economy. Now and most all year long I have shopped local and all of my holiday gifts will have some sort of interesting Modesto connection. It is amazing how easy it is to shop local if you love music, arts, food, and cool crafts, whether it is a McHenry Mansion tree ornament, or a new CD from a band you saw at the Thursday Ramble, a historical picture book at the Museum, olive oil gift pack from Sciabica, a bottle of Gallo wine or sip of Cold House Vodka there is really something for everyone. This holiday season, my family wishes the very best to you and your family. We remember our friends here, abroad and those that are not with us anymore. We hope that your holiday experiences are joyful, warm and rich with friendship. Together we all make Modesto USA the place it can be.

Keeping me on my toes! I
am sitting here looking at a calendar and trying to figure out where in the world time has gone this year. It seems like yesterday that I was toasting the new year with friends. That same event is less than a month away now. November could definitely have been easier for me but I learned a great deal from it and that is what matters to me. I was doing pretty well in regard to health but I was recently stopped in my tracks by a new prognosis that is not all that positive. I have learned that many of the people that read this column have been reading it month after month for a couple of years at least. Those folks know about what I have dealt with in regard to medical issues. Some of you don’t. I’ll explain a bit. I moved back to Modesto just about 15 months ago to focus on a new life. The community here gathered around me and helped me get through Cancer and a liver transplant a while back. I need to ask for that support again. The outlook is not very hopeful, but I’m going to be ok. I’m prepared for what will happen. I’ve accepted the reality of my situation. Take some advice from me and listen to your kids more now than you may have before. I was heartbroken to explain my health situation to my 16 year-old daughter but she really surprised me with her massive heart and ability to see the positive. She looked at me and said, “We were already given 10 years that we weren’t supposed to have dad. We can get through this.” I have no idea where she gets all the strength and courage that she has but I love it and I love her. She’s right. Each day needs to be treated like a special gift and cherished. As the holidays approach, make sure to get out and support local business as much as you can. Check out our gift guide in this issue and make the most of it. Modesto is a very special and beautiful place to shop and dine. I learned on Black Friday that I can outfit every man on my list at Crescent Supply and every woman at Intrinsic Elements. I’m not a huge fan of shopping. Both of these places are within

It was edited by award-winning photographer Adrian Mendoza. It became somewhat of a local viral sensation by racking up nearly 1,000 “likes” and re-tweets on various social networks. The show takes place in the tasting room of Delicato Family Vineyards in Manteca. Mistlin Gallery is seeking student artists for the Central California Art Association 38th Annual Young Masters Show to be held from January 15 to February 9, 2013. Entries will be received January 11 and 12 for artists in pre-school through high school. Categories include painting, drawing, photography and sculpture and are grouped by age. All participants receive a certificate and award winners receive art supplies and ribbons as prizes. The show will be featured during the January Third Thursday Art Walk.

I have a month long stay at Picasso’s with 11 paintings on display with price tags, along with owner/artist of Picasso’s Jordi Camps. You can also find art on the walls at Deva Cafe and I’ve seen some displayed through the windows of Concetta. Serrano Social Club has art on the wall opposite the FASM mural and upstairs. Check your local downtown eateries on and off the Art Walk to see if there is a local artist on display, and feel free to ask if the art is for sale. Mistlin Gallery is featuring its “Home for the Holidays” Central California Art Association members show and gift box artists through December 20. Mistlin has become a regular stop to window shop and purchase locally made art, jewelry and other items year-round. Gift Box items are listed at less than $100. Other good spots for locally crafted art, jewelry and other objects include the Chartreuse Muse and Beads of Contentment. Great Art Walk spots that are open on days other than Third Thursdays are Intrinsic Elements and Crow Trading Co. Both feature local art and offer good values for shopping. The Third Thursday Art Walk this month is December 20, so drop in on Paper Planes Tattoo and Art Gallery, Barkin’ Dog or the Building Imagination Center and get a map to all the venues. othing gets me in a festive spirit quite like drinking. The holiday season is exhausting, and I think we all need a delicious December cocktail or two (or four) to keep us all in a merry mood. Thus, Philip and I decided to embark upon a bar crawl, a ‘stumble’ if you will, of downtown Modesto’s finest drinking establishments. All of these locals, mind you, are within a short walking distance of one another. We have, in short, provided you with directions that can be used as a terrific excuse for a ‘get-out-of-the-house-stroll’ after family festivities. Tell them you want to check out Modesto’s downtown culture, or that the exercise would do you good. Philip and I won’t tell them otherwise. Consider this our holiday gift to you. Just for you, Philip and I visited various places downtown to catch willing bartenders completely unawares and bully them into telling us what is in their December holiday cocktail arsenal. These are the winning results:
First stop: Tresetti’s with Jessica Ybarra

“T.H.B.R.” – The Hot Buttered Rum -Combine sweet butter, brown sugar, holiday spices, and vanilla ice cream in the bottom of an Irish coffee glass. -Add 3 oz. of rum and hot water. -Stir like crazy. -Top with whipped cream and cinnamon. -Try to keep moans of ecstasy to a low volume.
“Pumpkin Pie Martini” -Combine and shake 2 oz. of Smirnoff Marshmallow Vodka, 3 oz. Fireball, splash of half and half, and 2 tsp. pumpkin pie puree -Serve in a graham cracker-crusted martini glass and finish with whipped cream. -Enjoy with a slice of pumpkin pie. Better yet, skip the pie and enjoy with another pumpkin pie martini. Two hands, two martinis!
“Christmas Collins” -Combine and shake a dash of fresh squeezed lemon juice, a pinch of sage, some simple syrup, 2 oz. Crème de Casis, and 5 oz. Hendrick’s Gin. -Strain into a chilled martini glass and garnish with a sage leaf. -Try not to die from deliciousness. It’s difficult, but try.
“Gingerbread Espresso Martini” -Combine and shake 1.5 oz. vanilla vodka, 1.5 oz. Crème de Cacao, a shot of espresso, however much Baileys you deem right, and a splash of gingerbread syrup -Top with whipped cream, cinnamon, coffee beans, chocolate flakes, glitter…. wait, no glitter, and/or a candy cane. The more decorated, the better.

IOT Culinary Wonderland!

Oh Sweet Christmas! I found peace on Earth right here in Modesto at the Institute of Technology (IOT) where I visited the Culinary Arts Program. The 1st stop on my guided tour was the baking and pastry specialist’s hands on, fully equipped kitchen classroom. Spectacular holiday cakes galore are magically created by pastry chefs in training and decorated like works of art. I was captivated as I watched the students practicing their new skills that will one day adorn someone’s dessert plate. I’m thinking it is going to be mine! On my second stop, I had the excellent fortune of being in the right place at the right time! The Culinary Arts Professional (CAP) program was featuring Garde Manger and Buffet Catering; it was the day the chefs in training prepare a specialty menu for a grand buffet. They invite their own family as their guests, supporters, and honest critics. For the feast, I dined on smoked turkey, butternut squash gnocchi, roasted veggies, and tender cheesy scalloped potatoes cooked to perfection. Yes, it was Dana~licious and most impressive from the passionate students and the dedicated staff rich in talent! Lillian Enger has been the campus president there for over 10 years. At the accomplished age of 47 she is content in her career. Lillian has been in a 20 year relationship with her partner Priscilla and they have a Chihuahua appropriately named “Chili”. She started at IOT as a student in a human resource class back in the 2nd graduating class. She had an eventful array of jobs she performed before achieving this top position. At age 12, she was motivated to mow lawns. She then cleaned construction windows, fetched golfballs, cooked for
10
100 people after working in the pro shop, stocker at Castle Air Force Base until it closed in 1995. She also worked for Gallo Winery for 3 1Ž2 yrs. as a clamp lift truck driver, a cat rescue shelter, and remodeled homes before becoming the 1st telemarketer at IOT in career services. On 9-11-01, Lillian was deeply affected like many of us, and asked herself “Am I doing what I want to be doing?” and she focus on this goal. Chef Alex Moreno, Culinary Division Director, has been with IOT since 2008. He is 35 yrs. old, married, and plans on continuing his prestigious position at IOT. He does have his own catering business and would like to also open his own restaurant as well. At age 18 (on his birthday!) he worked in a restaurant as a busboy when the cook called in sick and he was promoted! He said he fell in love with food. I so get that! Chef Alex still loves anything food related in his free time. He loves to dine in Modesto and walk around in the downtown. Both Chef Alex and Lillian find pure satisfaction when their students succeed and feel for them when they struggle. I wanted to share this awesome Modesto story with readers for a few reasons; IOT
is accredited by The Accrediting Commission of Career Schools & Colleges by the U.S. Department of Education. Many of the students reside in our Modesto community, work in Modesto, and IOT directly supports numerous charity events in our Modesto community. Francisco Daniel, student, is currently doing his externship at Vito’s on 13th St. IOT graduates also are employed at P. Wexford’s, Redwood Café, Doubletree Hotel, and Village Bakery. John Surla of Surla’s Restaurant works with students on last modules and is a member of the IOT Advisory Board. IOT also offers several other courses like Criminology, Heating/air, Medical Office Administration, Web/Graphic Design, and more. So proud of all IOT brings to Modesto! White Chocolate Cranberry Cookies Ingredients * 1/3 cup butter, softened * 1/2 cup packed brown sugar * 1/3 cup Granulated Sugar * 1 egg * 1 teaspoon vanilla extract * 1-1/2 cups all-purpose flour * 1/2 teaspoon salt * 1/2 teaspoon baking soda * 3/4 cup dried cranberries * 1/2 cup white baking chips Directions * In a large bowl, beat butter and sugars until crumbly, about 2 min * Beat in egg and vanilla. Combine the flour, salt and baking soda * Gradually add to butter mixture and mix well. * Stir in cranberries and chips. * Drop by heaping tablespoonfuls 2 in. apart onto baking sheets coated with cooking spray * Bake at 375° for 8-10 minutes or until lightly browned. * Cool for 1 minute before removing to wire racks. * Yield: 2 dozen.

Hey Modesto Viewers it’s that fabulous time of year again, Christmas. This morning as I stand among the golden autumn foliage christening my yard and wave goodbye to the last out-of-towners departing I realize that with Thanksgiving just behind us that he Christmas season is here and we are almost upon a New Year! Welcome the season in right by letting those sleigh bells start jingling ring-ting tingling and make certain you’re a part of all the yuletide activities around town. And no need to worry there’s always a great deal for everyone! Remember the 1st of December and make your way downtown to take in the Dickens Fair. The annual event takes visitors back to the Victorian era with costumed carolers at McHenry Mansion amid the weekly Farmer’s Market. The house is newly refinished and decorated in glorious Christmas brilliance. After you’ve wandered the streets in the morning take in the Celebration of Lights Parade that evening. This year’s theme is Holidays in Whoville, a tribute to Dr. Seuss.

The Runnels Brothers - InterView

Modesto USA is home to one of the most famous filmmakers ever. Ever since George Lucas memorialized the Class of ’62, there is a next generation of filmmaker that is waiting for their time, and that time is happening for film making bothers Greg and Mark Runnels. From origins in LA and the East Bay, they now call Modesto home and manage film projects everywhere and currently are the film makers in residence at the Building Imagination Center in Downtown Modesto. Greg and Mark have been working together creatively since the early 1990’s. Their feature film “Youthanasia” was shown nationally on Palm Pictures Video On Demand Film Festival and acquired by York Entertainment. Their animated short film “Breakfast With Bukowski”, with music by Tom Waits, had its world premiere at the Sonoma International Film Festival in 2011, and this year won the Slamdance Social Shorties Film Festival. For the last three seasons, the brothers have worked as on-camera design assistants on the Bay Area based HGTV show “Curb Apeal”. In May 2012 they completed the short film “Reunion” (starring Jack Souza) for the PlayGround Film Festival, in association with Berkeley Repertory Theater. They have been given a grant for the Filmmakers in Residence program through CSU Stanislaus, where they are mentoring students and producing a documentary about the emerging arts scene in downtown Modesto. In November of 2012 they were awarded a second grant through PlayGround to produce and direct the short film “The Secret Life of a Hotel Room”. Forest Whitaker’s JuntoBox Films has optioned their feature film “Bukowski: An Animated Life”, an animated bio-pic about the Los Angeles writer Charles Bukowski. They are also in development for the live action cycling film “Alleycat”. They are acting as writers and co-executive producers at a production company in L.A., where they have several television projects in various stages of development. This month, ModestoView catches up with this amazing talented team.

Photo by Sheena Marie ModestoView: How is it that you are here in Modesto and manage projects everywhere? Greg: Modesto has been a great place for us to develop our own projects. L.A. is a great place to be once you have a project that is ready to go or you are working on somebody else’s project but not a great place to be when you are sitting idle. Last year I was a Producer and Mark was a Story Editor on a TV show in LA that will never see the light of day, the unfortunate reality of the film business, for that we subletted a place for the run of the show. Mark: We are Bay Areans, but we also live a transient nature. We never stay in one place for a long time. Our entire existence is driven by our creative propjects; all of our work in film and television is either in L.A. or the Bay Area. Much like migrant workers we go where the work is, just like our grandparents who came traveled back and forth from Texas to California to work the fields. Our parents first moved to Modesto in the early 1990’s, while Greg and I moved to Los Angeles in 1992, just after the riots. Currently we have a place to stay in Oakland and a place in Laurel Canyon when we have to go to L.A. In between gigs we stay in Modesto, where we have the luxury of time to develop our projects. Right now we have ten projects in various states of production and development, from feature films to television shows to short films to
plays. ModestoView: Do you feel that as filmmakers, you view everything as a voyeur or as a participant? Greg: Students starting out in photography are usually given only a 50mm lens which is the perspective of the human eye. I have been using that practice in the documentary that we are producing for the Imagination Center when interviewing subjects because I feel that it forces you (the filmmaker) to be a participant as well as a voyeur. If I want a closeup I can’t just sit back with a long lens, I have to get in their personal space which forces you to develop more of a relationship with the subject. Mark: Any artist, regardless of their medium, has to be able to recognize what is brilliant work, which means they must continue to study and immerse themselves in the work of other artists. We are all shaped and hone our voice by what we like and don’t like. At the same time, an artist has to participate in life to know and recognize all aspects of what it is to be human. The job of any creative person is to present the truth in an interesting way. ModestoView: What are the quirks of society that interest you the most? Greg: People who follow their passion and convictions even if it alienates them from the majority. Mark: I like subcultures.
ModestoView: Do you feel each of you has a different perspective to filmmaking? Greg: One perspective that Mark and I have learned along the way is that you have to tackle each project with the mindset of a Producer. It has proven to be a good checks and balances, there are times that I may be looking at something outside of the reality of the production and Mark will reel me back in and vice a versa. In the end we both agree that without story, you don’t have a project. Mark: Greg and I divide and conquer by taking on different duties; that being said, there is always a check and balances system. We are both free to make independent choices, but everything must be brought to the table of our two man committee. In terms of cinematic elements, and this is a loose breakdown because we are constantly moving in and out of each other’s departments, Greg is more in charge of picture and editing, I’m more in charge of writing and dealing with actors. We both act as producers. As far as artistic perspective, Greg and I generally agree on everything

as far as film, music, literature, theater and art is concerned. We both have the same tastes, so we are always in pursuit of the same objective. ModestoView: As a filmmaker, what do you find to be the most interesting aspects of Modesto? Greg: When we were in Pre-Production for our first film we were living in L.A. As we began scouting locations we were met with the harsh reality that everybody had their hands out even though we were a microbudget film, when we turned our attention to Modesto as our primary location we were welcomed with open arms. We have since looked at the city as our little studio filled with inviting backdrops that continue to inspire us. Mark: Having worked for years in L.A. and the Bay Area, at the same locations over and over again, for us the Central Valley is a fresh milieu. Also, Modesto and the surrounding areas have really welcomed us when it comes to shooting. The rolling foothills, waterways and vast farmlands are visually stunning to us. We didn’t grow up here, so we’re constantly discovering things. It’s like living in a Terence Malick movie. ModestoView: Is there a person or subject that you really want to explore in film or a feature project? Greg: The Charles Bukowski project has

tion to the sound. I would also say keep it short and keep doing it, it is the only way to learn. Mark and I are constantly learning new things. Mark: If you want to learn how to make movies, go to work. Get a job as a production assistant on as many indie films as possible, pick a department and work your way up. Use your money you would have spent on film school and buy a decent camera and sound gear. Shoot a ton of short films before tackling a feature. Don’t spend a lot of money, use your time wisely, and get as close to perfection as your budget will humanly allow. ModestoView: What do you want to accomplish as the in residence Filmmakers at the Imagination Center? Greg: We want more people in the community to be aware that it is there. After that getting the creative work done throughout the day. Since injuring my knee I have not been able to run so I like to end my night swimming laps at the club. Mark: Getting up early in spring and having a healthy breakfast, getting a little work done, then heading out for a run or a bike ride in Dry Creek. After that working in the yard with the lady and three cats keeping me company. Later that night, dinner at home with the Lakers playing on TV. ModestoView: Beatles or Stones? The bird has barely grown cold from the day of giving thanks and now the shoppers, bargain hunters and people of merriment are on the move. Yes, there is plenty we all need, and then plenty we desire. Ghosts of Christmas past are looking down and ghosts of present waiting in the wings. friends volunteered this fall to, “Adopt” a Pathways Apartment through the Center for Human Services, Becky Murphy, Eva Steward, Ann Kline, Cheryl Smith and Nicole Slater. These apartments are occupied by Foster children who have reached the age of 18 and no longer have a place to live. The Center for human services, have 8 apartments these young adults can live in for up to 3 years. They have to be drug free, working on their GED and have a job. The goal is to get them out of the “System”! The apartment we adopted began a series of transformations and change us on day one. We took pictures of the apartment and at first glance it was just about the cosmetics. What could we do to make it look better? We later discovered it was about looks but also about making it home. We emailed and wrote to friends that we could count on. We spent Saturdays at garage sales and made old things new again. We spent hours painting and refinishing and recovering. This process was somewhat symbolic of what we were doing for these children, (Making them feel new again).

It was amazing how all five, creative friends worked well together. Everyone took a part that fit their talent or time restraints. We wanted the apartment to look good…but, most importantly…. our goal was to make them feel like they were home. Through our journey we found two wonderful gals doing their best to move forward in life. They are working, drug free and continuing their education. Bianca, one of the girls who lives in the apartment has a shinning personality that is thankful for where she is today. Pathways has been there for these young adults by providing guidance, care and respect. They are the most- kind group of people, asking why we were so nice to them. It is funny that as we were helping them…they were helping us. Our hearts are full. We discovered that we have good hearts, wonderful friends, fun memories and best of all a place called Pathways, here in Modesto, CA to help young fostered adults grow to become self efficient great people. “Generosity is giving more than you can, and pride is taking less than you need.”

Oh how I love baking! Especially Holiday Baking! It is one of things that gets me into the holiday spirit along with my favorite holiday movie, Christmas Vacation. In between all of the college applications, the essays, the break we all need is a treat now and then and the smell of fresh cookies and pies are the perfect holiday remedy for a stressful college planning day. This is the perfect all ages time of the year and so many things are easy on my wallet. The open mics at Queen Bean, the decorated McHenry Mansion, and pumpkin lattes at Queen Bean, music at the Barkin’ Dog and walking around the boutiques and galleries in downtown Modesto, especially when they have hot cider. The smells are amazing. It seems like there are a ton of good movies at both the State and Brenden. Twilight premier was a blast and I loved Lincoln. A cool fall night and a movie is a great night. A really cool show this month is the VMI Rocks Christmas Concert at Club Max December 16 at the Doubletree. This is an all ages show with bands like the Resistance, High Voltage and 14 other band and they will be doing Christmas songs. How fun!

If you really want to create personal gifts this year, I would recommend photos and videos. Everyone can watch videos, and it is a really cool personal thing you can do. This season, make a photo book like a miniature momento book. Photobooks are cool in that you can hand make the book, use some stamps, some fabric and really make something unique for each person. Music has really been in the air in Modesto lately and that has created a whirlwind of different types of music to enjoy. Keeping an open mind is important when it comes to listening to music. I’ve known people that have been stuck on the same genre or playlist for as long as I can remember and I do what I can to encourage them to give other music a chance when given the chance to. More often than not, they end up enjoying what I suggest. I was contacted Recently by Jonathon Jennings of Quote Your Pulse Records - a Turlock-based independent record label - and he encouraged me to download a copy of his label’s latest compilation. The compilation - simply titled “Cover Compilation” - is an ambitious effort that includes 25 tracks that vary widely in style. Each track is a cover of a track made popular by another artist. Many of the covers are performed by Modesto-area talent. The following is a list of a few of my favorite tracks on the compilation along with my take on them. 1.“Oh to be a Wagon Wheel” - not an Airplane breathes a new sense of life into this Bob Dylan classic that is also known as “Rock Me Mama.” Dylan’s version was done in the style of many 60s folk hits while not an Airplane slows it down and delivers the track with more harmony and a deeper sense of passion that almost makes it sound sad. Both versions are fantastic in their own unique ways but I actually prefer not an Airplane’s delivery better. The harmony that rings through the track is haunting and tender and nobody does haunting and tender quite like not an Airplane. 2. “We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together” - Taylor Swift has mastered the art of pumping out catchy pop tracks that appeal to a wide audience. This track blasted its way onto the pop charts and the country charts and has become one of the pop phenom’s best-selling singles. The Rocket injects a bold dose of teen angst into the track that is blended with just a dash of playful humor and sets it to life with a lively almost punk guitar sound. If you enjoy the original like so many other millions of Swift fans do, you might enjoy a chance to hear it in a different way. This is a lot of fun.

3. “Sweet Child O’ Mine” - Guns N’ Roses made this track a staple of the rock n’ roll genre and their version will always be a classic. The Josh Rosenblum band flips the song up in big way with their version. It is much slower than the original. Rosenblum’s vocal talent is evident here. He is able to give the classic song the feeling of romance and passion. Rosenblum and company don’t have the over-the-top flare that Axl Rose and Slash have on the original track but they don’t need it to make this version a winner. Download a copy of their version and add it to a romantic mix tape. This is how a cover song should be done in my opinion. If the song was only ever released this way it would have still ended up a favorite of mine. 4. “Iron Lion Zion” - The original version of this track by Bob Marley has been covered by by countless reggae acts and artists of other genres over the years. A’ La Lune takes the track apart and puts it back together with a raw sense of power. The guitar work at the end of the first minute of the track makes this track worthy of mentioning. A’ La Lune could very well be a big name act one day. Their work is very impressive. 5. “Eyes on the Prize” - The Airlings have created a it of magic with this effort. This version of the M. Ward classic will have you and your special someone swaying back and forth together and getting lost in the moment. This cover is downright beautiful. The Airlings clearly know how to convey passion and sincerity. I’d love to hear this live. There is quite a bit of music to be had for free but I encourage you to push a few dollars toward one of the featured artists. Support local independent talent. These acts work hard for you.

recently I had the opportunity to meet one of the most popular Whos from Whoville. I ran into him at the MJC track while doing some speed work. Interesting enough, he is the same Who that tries to steal Christmas every December from the children at The Spirit of Giving Charity Run. Yes Modesto View readers, I’m talking about The Grinch! It seems he narrowly escaped by the seat of his pants last year from the children during The Spirit of Giving Fun Run. Apparently, he was at the MJC track working on his speed only because he wasn’t going to take any chances this year with his plot to steal Christmas. He may be Green as well as have a heart 2 sizes to small, but he’s defiantly right on target when it comes training for speed. According to Lewis Ace and Nile Sousa who are the head coaches for The ShadowChase Running Club Speed Workouts, Speed Training helps improve your speed, endurance and develops those fast twitch fiber muscles. It also helps you with your leg turnover and proper form. In fact, my sprints where quickly critiqued by one of the coaches and I welcomed his advice. The Shadow Chase Running Club meets every Tuesday at 5:30PM at The MJC Track. Anyone can join the training secession it’s free. But if you come regularly you should become a member of this extraordinary running club to the get full advantages of the club’s activities, informative running tips and my personal favorite, the friendships and camaraderie we share that helps us with improving our speed to reach our own personal achievements. Many people don’t realize that during The Holidays; the average American will gain 6lbs from October 31st to January 1st. Modesto View Readers, if you are one of those people who have decided to relax on your fitness for the winter, I ask you to reconsider your thoughts on this. You’ve worked too hard all summer long to give it all away for the comfort of the warmth in staying home because it’s to cold outside for fitness. Seriously, those baggie warm

Fitness Tips 1. To build up your endurance without running and in the comfort of your own home, try performing 10 seconds of explosive pushups with 45 seconds of rest in between. Do this three to five times, rest five minutes, then repeat. When you perform multiple sets, you’ll develop your fast-twitch fibers’ and aerobic capabilities. This allows you to work at a higher intensity for a longer period of time before you reach the point of fatigue. 2. t first, Aki Starr’s name may strike you as unique. “Aki” is of Japanese origin, and translates to “autumn; bright; glistening.” It turns out that his name reflects his personal image and level of talent. As a singer,songwriter and producer, AKI Starr of San Francisco has been featured on MTV’s “Sway’s Universe” as a top music video was in Los Angeles this past weekend filming a music video to his latest single “Illusion.” Sources tell me that Starr held the title of the track back from the public until posting a Facebook post titled “Illusion” video shoot day 2... Dancers getting’ down!!!” Starr has been taking the stage by storm Across the United States and around the world. He has performed in front of thousands of fans that have been devoted to his evolving music trough his years of hard work and dedication. Locally, the young Latin/English singer has performed at the Fat Cat in Modesto. His single “The Closer I Get to You” was featured on Hot 104.7 here in the valley. Starr is currently devoting his free time to planning concerts to benefit Hurricane Sandy victims on the east coast. He will take his act to Staten Island, Long Island and Manhattan to perform scheduled benefit concerts. Starr’s accomplishments include writing hits for popular a number of television
shows including “Knock First”, “Jake 2.0 “Malcolm in the Middle” and “Desperate Housewives”. Starr is best known for his work as a singer with the group Spanish Fly. The group is signed to Warner Bros. Records and has created a list of hits that includes “Daddy’s Home”, “Treasure Of My Heart”, “Crimson and Clover”, “Visions”, “I Can See”, “One Last Try” and “Who You Loving Tonight?” Many famous DJs, singers and television hosts have made great statements and comments throughout the years in reference to Starr’s work. I had a chance to work with Starr in the studio and my experiences with the artist not only showed me that his talent is worthy of the praise heaped on him. He is very professional and humble in my opinion. I wouldn’t be surprised if Starr’s dedication and work ethic combined to create music that will live on as solid examples of excellence in the history of urban music. United Way of Stanislaus County has been serving this community since 1953. Our mission has always been simple: enhance the community through programs that improve the quality of life. Recently we have narrowed our focus to greater impact the common good by highlighting education. We partner with several agencies and support them in their endeavors, offering financial resources raised through company workplace campaigns. With our assistance, these nonprofits have a greater chance of achieving their objectives and are free to focus on what they do best…provide for the underserved. As a fundamental component of this partnership, we oversee these organizations to ensure the financial responsibility and integrity of each program we support through regular audits and outcome reports, respectful of our duty to be good stewards of hard-earned dollars entrusted to us. Currently we partner with 24 local agencies in a collaborative effort to address the multiple hardships we face in Stanislaus
County. Homelessness, child abuse, life limiting disabilities, hunger and literacy have been top priorities among the long list of afflictions many residents face. Last year, in collaboration with our partners, we provided over 630,000 services to people in this community. Currently, Stanislaus County has a high school graduation rate that hovers around 75%. Through our new education initiative, we are collaborating with experts in education to identify obstacles students face and aggressively combat the county’s high dropout rate, leading to more opportunity, better jobs and a safer community. Meeting the basic needs of those who are struggling remains a top priority for us

By Mary Layton Sometimes when we question our purpose or abilities, we can think of this story: As was routine, water would be carried from the river daily in hand fashioned buckets by the small population of a tiny village. One day a bucket after seeing much use, sprung a leak and drops of water would drop from it on the journey home from the river. And although the woman who carried the buckets noticed, she did not replace it. The bucket felt bad for it was not doing the job it was made to do well anymore. And day after day, the woman would fetch water and the bucket would lose some on the journey back. This went on until the bucket could stand no more. “Why do you keep using me,” the bucket lamented to the woman, “if I have a leak and cannot carry all the water you put in me home? I am no longer useful to you. “ The woman smiled cheerily at her buck-
