EDITOR’S Greetings, The Kids are Alright! As we are putting the September issue together, the news flash was that Neil Armstrong

had died. One of the true last American heroes and above all, truly inspiring, truly ethical, truly humble, truly brave and was truly the right stuff in every sense of the word. Who is next? What it next, where do we go now? Our youth need to be inspired! Our youth need to be taught pride. Our youth need to understand that there is so much yet to be discovered and so much to be learned. We need to teach our youth that brains and science are so very very cool and music and the arts expand the mind and teach our kids to be understanding intelligent thinkers. The current political process and the media celebrate the mediocre, the loud and false celebrity. One guest star on a cable TV show, and you get on the A,B,C,D list. We have to change this and celebrate the talented, the great and the inspiring. That is why this issue is dedicated to the Youth Bands and we are here to say that “the Kids are Alright” That is why ModestoView exists, to showcase the people that make a positive difference. People that encourage and teach kids how to be amazing adults, to reach high and challenge themselves to be great are our heros! Marilyn McCoo and Billy Davis Jr. represent the artists of the 60s and the 70s that chose greatness and love to have a long and meaningful career. Last month we interviewed Modesto Mayor Garrad Marsh who challenges us, and our city, to be better and make something special out of all that we have. This month, he is encouraging exceptional youth with the Modesto Teens program (see page XX). Each and everyone of us can teach the value of education and awareness. We can teach the value of community giving and compassion for others. We can teach that we need to invest to make our families, cities and country to be great. It is not about taking and off-shoring, it is about investing and creating. With every issue of ModestoView, we hope you learn about something new and amazing and about people of all ages that are making a difference and champion excellence! This way, we can all live like Neil Armstrong, and every thing we do can be more than just a small step, but a giant leap. “Love Thy Neighbor” I am sitting here typing this at Serran So-

cial club and for the first time in a very long time, I am not wearing any sort of cast or brace. My arm is sore and my flexibility will not fully return for several more months but I am happy to be working with my words again. I am happy to have control back. The last couple of months have been a real learning experience for me. I have had the chance to attend a number of events without lugging a camera around. I have been able to be nothing more than some guy in the audience and I have had a lot of fun. The high point of my recent experiences was a trip to Merced to see Grandaddy. Modesto View publisher Chris Murphy emailed me one day and wrote that he had a ticket for me to see the show. Being the curious guy that I am, I made the journey. This my friends was a wise choice on my part. This my friends changed my outlook on everything from community spirit to art. Murphy and I stood in front of Jason Lytle and the band in our light blue matching “It’s on...again” t-shirts and we melted into the sensory overload that swept over The Partisan like a cloud. Critics speculate that Grandaddy quit music several years ago because they failed to attain “mainstream success.” The music scene is different now than it was back then

Young hipsters and us middle-aged folks swayed back and forth together to songs laced with deep passionate lyrics and wrapped together with thick layers of perfect tone and raw energy. I’ve never had a better concert experience. I can honestly say that I have a new sense of purpose lately and that feels good. I have started to write a book, picked up a camera again and I have taken a closer look at my personal relationships. I have made so many friends here in Modesto and I love that these people are honest, real and caring. I am working on some new projects and I hope to make a splash one day. I don’t

need to be rich and famous. I need to help people. I need to travel. I need to feel alive by doing good things for good people. Take some time to explore Modesto this month. Go somewhere that you would not normally go. I want to see Michael Bolton fans at a rap show at Fat Cat and rap fans dancing along to a musical at the Gallo Center. Diversity and experimentation have helped me find myself. Modesto has inspired me and forced me to challenge myself to get out of my own way. That is something that I really needed to happen. riting about Surla’s is easy as pie because 1) I already love Surla’s, and you should doubt the integrity of any person who doesn’t. 2) I am an eager supporter of the behind-the-bar prowess of the Surla’s mixologist trifecta of Matt, Sonya, and Amanda. 3) The bar freaking lights up red! This is a no-brainer, people. Those of you who have been to Surla’s are already aware of the excellent Asian-fusion based menu, the extensive wine list, rotating taps, and the 100+ bottle bar (complete with a creditable whiskey and rye selection, and a constant bottle of Sazarac) which serves as the foundation for the tempting selection of both new and old school cocktails--- Those of you who are unawares of the above should not hesitate to call the number at the bottom of the page. I think my alcohol tolerance level jumped ten points the day I met Miss. Amanda Spinnato. Not only does she fill the shoes of being a formidable drinking partner and good friend, she’s also a very charismatic and talented bartender. The girl can make you a mean cocktail and couple it with some pretty incredible stories; it’s a winning combination, but will encourage you to drink more just so you can hang out with her longer. Amanda has not always been behind the bar, however. Previously, she was in administrations and marketing for ten years before making the big switch (there was something she off-handedly said about training with nun chucks for a while…). She enjoys the fact that in bar tending “you never know what you’re going to get.” She states about Surla’s: “No matter who your bartender is here, you can give them a flavor/spirit profile, and we’ll always deliver. We use fresh produce, quality spirits, and I guarantee being here will put you in a good place. And always be sure to stay for one more, because that’s when the fun happens.” And so, ModestoView readers, here are three lovely Surla’s cocktails for your taste buds’ sensory pleasure to kick start your September, courtesy of Miss. Surla’s Spritzer 1 oz. Passion fruit puree 1Ž2 oz. Lime juice 1Ž2 oz. Lemon juice 1Ž2 oz. Blade Gin 1Ž2 oz. Tatiana Sauvignon Blanc Splash of simple -Shake it up -Pour into a large wine glass full of ice -Top with soda water -Garnish with mint *Spinnato fun fact and my favorite part: Give mint leaves a good hand smack to ‘express’ the ﬂavor. Like I need an excuse to smack more things... **Expert level: If you’re at that right stage of ‘everything-for-some-reason-is-justworking’ buzzed ability (you know what I’m talking about), attempt to further fancy up your Surla’s Spritzer by rimming the glass with three orange slices—as pictured. Not for the uncoordinated, but results in a pretty presentation which is sure to earn you points.

Dana-licious Chicken & Quinoa Bowls

16 oz. quinoa or brown rice prepared 3 tbsp olive oil 1 lb. skinless/boneless chicken breasts sliced into bite-size strips 1 cup julienne carrots 2 cups fresh spinach (washed) 1 tbsp fresh chopped garlic JADE Sichuan Peanut Sauce Prepare quinoa according to package directions separately. In a large skillet heat olive oil, saut chicken first, add carrots, add spinach, and then add garlic. Saut ’ until fully cooked. Using 4 cereal size bowls layer cooked quinoa, chicken & veggies, drizzle peanut sauce (heat if desired), and repeat! Enjoy!

with preparations for XFest, Respect on the River, we had a chance to have a surprise visit from my Columbia Missouri friends John Randall and Andy Rehm of the Hooten Hallers, they played an intimate acoustic show at Casa de Allsup. I truly believe that if you get a chance to hear them play it is an uplifting, joyous experience. We will be hosting them here again in November at Thanksgiving. HOORAY!!!!!!! Now, that August is coming to a most pleasurable end. Modesto Burners are gearing up for Burning Man in the Black Rock Desert, Nevada for one week. There is about twenty Modesto Burners that ban together and help each other prepare for the crazy conditions on the Playa. My husband Mike Allsup started attending in 2000, I shortly followed in 2003 and look forward to going home every year! We camp with a theme camp called The Petting Zoo, address is 2:00 and Edleweiss. This years BM theme is Fertility. Burning Man is a creative arts festival with all walks of life from all over the world. Black Rock City, Nevada is the 3rd largest city for one week. When we all leave the desert we all LEAVE NO TRACE we were there. Tess and Devon Boyd (The Refuzniks) are burners as well. Unfortunately, they will not be going home this year. ore bright moments in store. I fell by a garden party fundraiser for the Forakis Memorial Music Scholarship party August 18th and was treated to great music for a good cause. One of the brightest moments was the Josh Rosenblum Band. Comprised of four young blood musicians that were smokin’, playing rock, R & B, Funk with great original vocals and arrangements, not to mention Josh’s guitar slinging and singing that was outstanding. I foresee another Johnny Valdes in the making for our Modesto scene. The event had plenty of other young talent from classical to folk, to singer-songwriter. Two years ago nobody really had any clue

what was brewing on the top floor of an average middle-class home on the outskirts of Ripon. Neighbors would twist their necks a bit more than usual to catch a glimpse of the instruments and gear going into the house but it was all pretty hush-hush.

High Voltage

The result of that project is now one of the most consistently popular rock bands in the central valley- the young punk/rock n’ roll trio High Voltage. Young brothers, Matt Grattan, age 14 and Paul Grattan, age 15 form the voice and percussion for the outfit while bassist, Nolan Harris, age 12 keeps the rhythm tight on bass guitar while providing vocals as well. Together, the trio has created a rare quick following in the Modesto area by playing a relentless schedule of live shows and forming partnerships with other local performers, instructors and venues. A positive byproduct of their efforts is that High Voltage has helped to create a resurgence in the level of awareness for youth bands in the central valley. The band works to schedule their shows to incorporate other local young acts and has established a scholarship fund to help fellow bands get the training that they need to develop their own talents. Teamwork and community focus are essential elements to the band’s game plan. The band’s hard work has garnered them a nomination for this year’s first-ever MAMA award for youth bands and if their constantly growing army of fans has any say in the matter, the boys will take home the trophy. The fans charged with voting for the award are the same loyal fans that have been with the group every Thursday night at P Wexford’s for over a year. They are also the same fans that packed the State Theatre to see the band during their first Future of Rock mu-

sic festival in April and this August’s Modstock. Band dad and acting manager, Thomas Grattan and his wife Janette along with Harris’ parents, Chris and Lisa have helped to clear the way for the boys to go as far as they want with the project by providing financial support and guidance. Together they are clear that the decision to keep the band moving forward is ultimately up to the group members themselves. “The band enjoys what they are doing and they have fun with it,” said Grattan. “They all make the honor roll in school and they all participate in sports. They

are excited about playing as much as they can and they work very hard. They get along very well.” Grattan has assembled a tight network of support for the band that is made up of some of the most respected talent in the area. The band is currently under the musical direction of Johnny Valdes and Kelly Ramirez, known to audiences as the duo Johnny and Kelly. Individual instruction comes from Dave Hawkes who teaches drums to Paul, Neil Buettner who instructs Matthew on guitar, Mark Hatchfield who instructs Nolan on Bass and Hari Kari who acts as both a vocal coach and overall band advisor.

Hari Kari won the 2011 MAMA award for Best Blue Collar and has been in the music business as a performer, technician and instructor for over 30 years. According to Hari Kari, bands come and go in the industry because they can’t find a sound or a niche but he does not see that as an issue for High Voltage. “These kids have that rare ‘x-factor’ that many acts never find,” he said. “Think about what would happen if someone combined Aerosmith with Greenday and set their sound to life with a series of pop-driven songs that easily stick in the minds of listeners.

Local singer-songwriter, Neil Buettner expresses his thoughts about the potential future of High Voltage in a way that he believes explains what has happened and what could happen with the band. If what Buettner says rings true, the band could quite possibly have a long successful future ahead of them.

Marilyn McCoo and Billy Davis Jr When the moon is in the 7th house…. And Jupiter aligns with Mars.. By Chris Murphy The time was the Vietnam War. Campus

protests were common and the summer of love was over. There was a feeling angst in the youth culture. (See August ModestoView, the Summer of Love) Out of the haze of war and angst, The 5th Dimension rose to fame. In 1967 Billy Davis, Jr., Florence LaRue, Marilyn McCoo, Lamonte McLemore, and Ron Townson topped the charts with Up, Up and Away. The 5th Dimension became superstars with 1969s Aquarius /Let the Sunshine In from the play Hair and the rest is history and many years of hits followed. ModestoView got to catch up with Marilyn McCoo as she and her husband Billy Davis Jr. gear up for their show at the Gallo Center on September 15. Chris Murphy: I was a massive 5th Dimension fan and you have such a unique perspective for the music. You have seen the music world change so much. Aquarius / Let The Sun Shine In was a breath of fresh air in 1969 in a diﬃcult period. How did you feel about that kind of transition? Marilyn McCoo: We were not the political types. We all had our own individual opinions about politics and life, and we didn’t agree, so we didn’t broach the subject. I addition, we always felt we were entertainers and we didn’t feel it was our job to impose our opinion. CM: You have hits in all the recent decades and you still continue to tour today, how would you feel the music business has changed? MM: One thing we have always realized, that to be there for along time, the hits are going to change to reflect the tastes of the youth who are coming up. They are making the music that will make their memories. Each group wants to have their own group, their sensibilities and what they are going through, just like we did during our

time. I don’t try to do music that we think the young people are going to relate to, but basically sing about the basic things about love and what is going on around you and that connects. But our approach will be different as our lives are different. What Billy and I like to do is mix up our show, do hits from our era and do hits from today or hits from the past decade, that if we were recording in this era, would be songs that would represent what we would like to do. CM: It seems like young people are getting more experimental in their music tastes. MM: One of the things we like about the young people of today is that they have a wider range of music that are interested in. Thank god for YouTube as the youth like to explore different music. When they hear our music, they are enjoying the different approaches of a variety of music. CM: You were a big part of Solid Gold and all of these other early “Star Search” type of shows were so groundbreaking. How do you feel the music business is different now? MM: They way they are doing things now, there are new opportunities and so many ways to be heard and to break through. You don’t have to live in LA, Chicago or in Detroit during the Motown era anymore. Years ago, you didn’t have a chance to be heard unless you lived there, but now you can live anywhere and get discovered. I would like to see these artists have a chance “develop” more before they make it big and refine their own gift more as they break through. CM: If you have to go back and look at your time with the 5th Dimension, what was one of your most memorable shows? MM: Early on, we were playing this huge

show in Toronto and there was a sea of 40,000 faces. It was just amazing to see that many people to show up to see us play. One time, we played the White House when Nixon was president, there as a 50 Governor conference on Drugs. One of the songs that the 5th Dimension did was a musical interpretation of the Declaration of Independence. If you read the Declaration, it is very patriotic, but it was really talking about revolution, so here we are in the midst of the Vietnam War, singing about revolution at the White House. When we finished the song, no one applauded, utter silence. When Nixon started applauding, everyone applauded, a very awkward interesting moment. CM: Big props to you and Billy, you have been married for so long in an industry that is loaded with scandal and break up. What is one of your secrets? MM: One of the big secrets to our relationship is our friendship. We were best friends long before we were married. We have been married for 43 years now, a long time to live together. One thing that holds us together is he is my best friend and I am his best friend. Also, one thing we learn is how to pick your battles and know when to bring things up. We respect each other. CM: Who inspires you now?

MM: We are doing an Alicia Keys song in our show and we love the way she expresses herself. We like a lot of the young artists and we like the way young people say what they want to say. We know it really gives audiences something to latch on to. CM: The people of Modesto are excited to see you. What are some of the treats the crowd at the Gallo Center MM: Of course, they will hear our big hits and we will honor the wonderful hits of the 5th Dimension that brought us to where we are today and play some of our hits together as a duet act. Billy is going to do some Blues and we both sing some Jazz. One thing people are not aware of, Playboy used to have a Jazz poll, and we were very honored by them for 4 years in a row, the 5th Dimension was selected by Jazz musicians as the best Jazz band. Our show is a mixture of music from our era, from today and before our era, it is so cool, young people hear it and they say, “Wow.. it is so cool, we love the way you sing that.” The people who come to see us are the ones that love music. orns up Modesto! There is a lot of metal coming our way this month!! With a huge PRONG show at The Fat Cat. Featuring local favorites Nothing But Losers, newcomers Decimate The Opposition and a couple of bands from the bay area. Another big show is Thrashocalypse 3. With over 25 bands 3 stages this will be an epic show on September 8th at The Clarion Hotel on Sisk Rd. This is the 3rd annual of these events and possibly the last, so this not a show to miss. This month I’d like to focus on a couple bands that I think are making waves in town. Hang The Kode and Bombs Overhead are both in search for new members and have been seen at local shows looking for local talent. Nothing But Losers continues to keep the bookings rolling and Merced’s This Times Brutal is working hard at promoting their music with huge CD release shows and music videos to promote what they have going on. Bands like Zombie Death Stench, Stainless Barrel and

“High School Hero” By Javier Lopez There is a new kid on the block! Still in high school and fresh off the plate, This young 17 year old Rapper is making wave in the sea full of MC’s, not on the radio, but on the world wide web. Perhaps his 33,000 + hits on youtube (http://www.youtube. com/user/domo95368) crown him a local celeb? Perhaps this kid is looking towards a stretch of highway with much needed speed to keep up with the rest? Only time will tell! “The Name” D o m z had this to say: I released my first single “Baby Call Me” freshmen year and it got a lot of buzz. By the end of freshmen year a lot of people knew me and were blowing me up, I came up with my name because my name is Dominic and my last name is Dominguez, so I sorta just combined them both and came up with Domz, and since then I’ve stuck with it and grew. “His ambitions” I don’t strive to get signed or make it big. The strive behind most of my music is simply because I love it and love how it has evolved my life into a local celebrity. I am constantly in public signing autographs and taking pictures with my supporters. My parents are sometimes in shock at how often it occurs but now we are all getting used to it and it is becoming part of my life to be recognized. As of right now I am focused on adding on to my fan base. I am constantly releasing new work to keep everyone in touch and up to date with what I am doing. “The Music” My singles on YouTube are “Like you” and “Coming Home”. I self produced “Like You” the beginning of this year and it

is currently hitting around 300,000 views on YouTube. All my YouTube views put together top out at 1,200,000 million. I recently released my second single “Coming Home” produced by Epid featuring Kris Kay of the bay area. That video hit 5,000 views over night and is currently growing at a steady pace of a couple thousand daily. “The Album” “High school Hero” I came up with this name to show everyone I am still in high school and let them know I am making a name for myself at such a young age. A lot of the tracks on there are all self produced and mastered so it its hard and takes a lot of time to get the work done. It has been in production for about a year now. I have a wide variety of genres on this album and I am taking my time on it since it is my first album I want to make it perfect. Train on the Heavy to train on the heavy. When you lay down miles upon miles on a heavy bicycle, it helps you build up strength and endurance because it’s tacking your body outside of the normal. So, when you ride with a faster group on your carbon-framed racing bike that can be as much as 15lbs lighter, you will be able to go faster for longer with less of an effort compared to your competitors. Ingenious? You bet! Some cyclists have been know to achieve this very same concept by filling their water bottles with rocks or cement while others simply strap on a weight vest for their training rides. The concept is solid; I too decided to add on more weight to my training bike as well as my racing bicycle by adding gizmos and gadgets for comfort and safety. But on race day, I strip it down to the bone and the benefits I gained added as much as 5MPH on my average speed. As I pried into Vernon O

Focus: The Quiet Mind

There are many thoughts and schools on

achieving a meditative state. After sifting through libraries on this subject, you might find some common ideas about meditation. The most prevalent concepts in reference to this journey of focus are: relaxation, breath, acknowledging but not attaching to thought, and awareness. The practitioner of meditative focus should begin by relaxing. Relaxation techniques can be learned in the study of disciplines such as T’ai Chi or Yoga. Generally people think they have to sit down to meditate, but you can meditate anywhere like when you’re

standing in a line. Some people may not be able to be still to meditate. For those who prefer motion, T’ai Chi and Chi Kung are good for this and are known as ‘Moving Meditation’. Give breathing your attention. Just know that you will eventually breathe deeper and slower but do not make an effort to do so. After practicing this for awhile, it will happen on its own. As you focus on your breathing and listen to your body, unrelated thoughts will pop into your head. Don’t try to stop thinking, but instead acknowledge each thought and let it move away from you like a leaf on a stream of water. Just be aware as each thought appears and disappears. By practicing to focus regularly, you will be well on your way to achieving a quiet mind. In the next issue,we’ll see how T’ai Chi Ch’uan is used to achieve a quiet mind and how this affects the body.

Smart Cycling Tips Below

By Efren Martinez It was on one of my group rides when my friend Vernon Dupree showed up on his 36lb. 1974 Schwinn Varsity road bike. It caught my attention and I was thinking, “this guy will never be able to keep up with our high end, very light road bikes. What’s he thinking?” Vernon was thinking outside of the box with his vintage Schwinn that he modified considerably, with time trial bars and a single speed but still looked original and maintained a 1974 heavy-weight ride. Vernon is an experienced cyclist with over 25 years in the saddle so I wasted no time getting the skinny on Vern’s thoughts behind his modified prehistoric bicycle. Vern shared with me that he has two bicycles, his 20lb carbon Bianchi C2C and his vintage Schwinn. Vern explained that training on your racing bike is essential. The more you ride it, the more comfortable you become with it in a race. But, it’s also a good idea

for more bicycling information, I found myself asking him what was the most beneficial component he got out of riding his 1974 Schwinn compared to his Bianchi. His reply was totally in Vernon’s character. “This Schwinn I occasionally ride is a polar opposite of my carbon fiber high-end bicycle, I use it as a reminder of how fortunate and blessed I really am.” Vernon is expected to be at this year’s Memorial Medical Centers Cancer Awareness Run & Ride on September 15th in Modesto. The Cancer Run & Ride is one of my preferred, local family fitness events of the year. It features many free informational healthy lifestyle booths as well as a 10K and a 2-mile run or walk, free kids fun run, as well as three cycling rides with distances varying in a 12-mile, 25-mile and 63-miles and a BBQ for its registered participants. Inspect your bike, test your brakes & inflate your tires to proper PSI prior to each daily ride. Refuel every 30-miles with 150 calories. A few cranberries mixed in with salted soy nuts are packed with protein in the nut and the salt on the nuts helps you retain water so you don’t cramp up. The cranberries are a natural sugar balance to sustain the hunger so you don’t bonk on the ride. Putting a hairnet over your helmet keeps bees from getting caught in your helmet during your ride and may prevent a bee sting. “They can be purchased at any restaurant supply store or drug store” Carry 2 water bottles and rehydrate every 15-miles; top off 1 bottle with h20 & the other with an electrolyte 80 calorie sports drink. Invest in a Road ID & or have some kind of contact info on you. Apply sun block, ride with others and carry a cell phone. Carry a few dollars as well as a spare tube, air cartridges & a tire patch kit. Obey all traffic laws while cycling as if your where driving a car, clip out and stop at stop signs. Be aware and be careful out there and have fun.

The school year is now in swing and it’s time to get back to the early mornings and late tired nights! There is so much going on in our lives from the constant homework, weekly football games, and afternoon naps, but sometimes we want to add more to our schedules! This is the time to attend your school’s club events and decide where you want to be active. Are you one of those young adults that wants to make a change in the world? Do you want to work for peace every day? Well there is a major event going on this September that emphasizes exactly that. The Social Justice Youth Conference is an event connecting all the high schools and junior highs in our area to combine and make sure that we work to connect on a personal level and understand the needs of people around the world. The event will have live music entertainment, an Iraq War veteran’s keynote address, lots of food, representatives from activist organizations throughout our community, T-Shirts, and

lots of dessert provided by the one and only delicious YogurtMill! This event will be held on Saturday, September 22nd at the Modesto Church of the Brethren and is absolutely, 100% free! Center for Human Services Edible Extravaganza... Giving the gift of Hope

fun, food and frolic of Edible Extravaganza. This year won’t be any different as the Central Valley’s most anticipated food and beverage show kicks off on the evening of September 6th at Modesto Centre Plaza. For those of us who go each year, do we know what our ticket fee really does to help those less fortunate than us? Here’s a small sample of how our support for the Center for Human Services has impacted the life of someone in our community; Emma is a 14-year-old lovely and intelligent girl. Sadly, her dark eyes reflect pain no young girl should have to endure. After a childhood of physical and sexual abuse, where she lived with an alcoholic, drug addicted mother, Emma has finally found some peace and safety at Hutton House. “Being here, I feel more alive”, Emma says. “When I was with my dad and then with my mom, there was always this big weight of stress.” Coming to Hutton House, the staff was able to “grab that weight” from Emma and never give it back. Emma now looks at her future with hope. “I will not let my past take over my future,” she says. She is currently enrolled an accelerated education program at her high school as she chases here dream -to attend Princeton University. This is a real life example of how CHS is in the business of changing lives, building futures and helping families through programs in the areas of shelter, juvenile jus-

tice services and mental health counseling. CHS also provides school based services, family resource centers, and substance abuse prevention and treatment. The Center’s focus is on the youth and families of Stanislaus County. How can you help bring hope to others like Emma? Join CHS celebrate the 26th Edible Extravaganza! Along with support from underwriting sponsors Prime Shine Car Wash, Save Mart Supermarkets and Valley First Credit Union, this year’s event will feature the some of the area’s finest restaurants, caterers, bakers, confectioners, vintners, beverage purveyors and local growers. After a courtyard reception the main event will open to the public at 6:00 pm. Live music will be performed from two stages throughout the evening. As always, Edible Extravaganza will help raise funds for Center for Human Services, a private, local, non-profit agency. CHS has been a part of our community for over 40 years thanks to generous support and

Dan Costa and the Costa Family Foundation developed an idea to give back to the community, specifically with agencies that work with youth, by creating a highly delectable champagne community brunch event that will serve approximately 3,000 people. This event will give five nonprofit youth charity organizations the opportunity to compete and raise funding for their cause,while also initiating a one-of-a-kind community event that will be providing a sophisticated brunch and enjoyable entertainment in a pleasant setting.
