tion from the rain and Irish green into the colors of spring flowers and flavors of spring produce and we all bust of move out there in the great outdoors as the season opens. I love every month as there is always something really unique about each one. This month is really special as we are out there, helping local organizations raise funds for really valuable projects. In particular, we will be raising money by “Walking in Their Shoes” benefitting Haven Women’s Center to help stop spousal and sexual abuse. This is a light-hearted way to show awareness and understanding for something really important. We hope you will support our team, the Men of Graffiti. We will make you proud. We need to raise our high school graduation rates in our region so I and my fabulous Murphy Girls, Madison and Abigail will be “Walking the Stage” for United Way’s Graduation Coach program. Music lovers will love this fundraiser for Hope Haven West as I and my band Third Party, along with other Modesto area bands present a British Invasion Show on April 15 at the Portal. Please buy tix, donate go to these events and we hope to see you there. Together we make our community better. Time to Play Ball! It’s game on now. April has a ton of fun stuff to do. Baseball season is opening, the youth activities get into full gear, the farmers markets are open, the bike and walking trails are buzzing with people and our regional destinations like Knights Ferry,

Sonora and Yosemite are stellar and the waterfall are pounding. So much to do and see and so much to taste and eat. We really start to get into the sweet spot of our year. It was amazing to see the thousands of people that poured into Modesto for the Modesto Marathon last month. There were people here from 26 states and three countries to race and experience our community. This is why our city really is and needs to be a showpiece. People are coming here for events like this, the performing arts, our local businesses and our Classic Culture. Let’s sure we let our visitors know they are welcome and give them all something to do when they are year. If you have a friend or visitor from out of town, or new in town, give them a ModestoView and they will thank you forever as they will learn

about all of the great things happening and the fantastic local businesses and people that make it happen. This is why ModestoView is so special. COMMUNITY Beyer/Sylvan at the Lakes Community by Kathy Munoz Modesto Neighborhoods Inc. makes Modesto better! Beyer/Sylvan at the Lakes is a new community that is a part of Modesto Neighborhoods Inc! The alliances in our city have worked many wonders as neighbors have joined to achieve their goals. Beyer/Sylvan at the Lakes has been active for a year. We have taken actions that resulted in greater safety, funds for the schools within our boundaries, and beautified and cleaned streets and parks. Beyer/Sylvan at the Lakes community is bounded on the north by Claratina Avenue, on the south by Floyd Avenue, on the west by Coffee Road, and on the east by Oakdale Road. All homes, residences, schools and businesses within are part of Beyer/Sylvan at the Lakes Community. We are 3000 strong and can make a difference when we address a problem. Please contact us with your concerns and questions. Our steering committee meets on the second Tuesday of the month in the activities room of the Stratford at 6:00pm on Forest Glen Drive off of Sylvan.

Future projects will assist with fundraising and installation of The Awesome Spot in Beyer Park. This is a playground for all children including those with limited mobility. Continuing fundraising efforts will provide more for our schools in the way of extra funding, and we are looking carefully at what interest there is in security patrols. A safety survey on our Gmail site is a way to express your top safety concerns. Finally, beautification of our community will happen when we participate in our Love Modesto project. We will be cleaning the streets and parks of our community. An all-community meeting will be organized

in May to address safety concerns. We will be updated by the police department and our representatives on the city council as to current issues with a question and answer time following presentations. ART Artist Open Studio & More by Jim Christiansen April showers us with opportunities to visit artists in their studios, art showcases, Art Walk and Art Hop, and maybe an IRS refund to buy some new art for the wall. Stanislaus Artist Open Studio Tour is April 22 and 23. A total of 55 artists showing art in 36 studio venues, more than the few pieces you see in a gallery show, but the larger portfolios, what other media artists paying with, the tools and spaces they create in. For the seventh year, I’ve got my garage studio in progress and dining room gallery open to the public, and a square attached to my phone. This time, I’m one of the studios sharing space with other artists, Jennifer K. Machado and Richard Bradshaw. Part of Jennifer’s art lives here full time. Richard is new to the tour, and one of the Purchase Prize Award winners, as I am, who will have art given away in the Open Studio drawing. Five other art creations will be given away, so remember to cut out your entry form on page 3 of the official map booklet to enter. Maps are on sale at The Chartreuse Muse, Mistlin Gallery, Modesto Convention and Visitors Bureau, Carnegie Arts Center and Oakdale Chamber of Commerce.

It pays to get your map early to plan your route includes studio stops in Turlock, Modesto, Escalon and Oakdale 11 am – 5pm both days. Some stops like mine open earlier or later, and participating artists have maps. Being brewers ourselves, we are quite obsessed with the 1920’s culture and prohibition, and everything that went with it. The inclusion of women into the drinking scene of underground bars and speakeasys was possibly the most important event to happen to the alcohol industry, and we can thank the lack of (legal) alcohol for the popularity of the cocktail. Sure, cocktails have existed in some form for hundreds of years, but to stretch that one bottle of vodka (or gin, or whisky, why be picky!) you had in your cabinet to last longer meant it was time to find things to mix with hard alcohol. Cocktails are now just as common as beer or wine. Lucky us in 2017, we can find cocktails at any bar, especially the beautiful ones created at Vintage Lounge and Piano Bar. It looks and feels like a speakeasy popped right out of 1925 and into 2017. Vintage has been at this location on Main Street for four years. They host live piano music Wed/ Thur/Fri from 6pm-8pm, and live bands Thur/ Fri/Sat from 9pm-close. Some of my favorites play here, like Tim Allen and Neil & Matt. PERFORMANCE A Time to Perform in April By Kaye Osborn & ModestoView Staff

My good friend Kimberly Ogden is directing a play for the Gallo Center Repertory Company called Sangre de un Angel written by Roxanne Scroeder-Arce (who also wrote Mariachi Girl). This dramatic play illustrates how the choices we make can affect our relationships and our lives forever. It is based on a true story of Adam Chapa, who was shot by a teen gang member in East Austin, Texas. It is exciting that GCRC is producing such timely productions. Modesto Performing Arts will be celebrating 50 years with a stellar musical concert featuring over 120 alumni performers. (I am one of them!) DESIGN Modesto is not only a city. It’s a font. by Lee Davis, Founder, Modesto Design School

Every letter of every word you’re reading here has been designed. Each character of every font has been meticulously drawn by a typographer to ensure legibility, to be aesthetically pleasing, and to convey a style or symbolic meaning. If you were to design a font inspired by Modesto, what would it look like? Acclaimed magazine and newspaper typographer Jim Parkinson did just that. In 2001, he designed a font family named after and inspired by Modesto. Born in Oakland, Parkinson started as a lettering artist for Hallmark Cards in 1964 where he learned his craft from leading type designers, including renowned German typographer Hermann Zapf. When Parkinson returned to Oakland in 1969 to create his own studio, he was already an accomplished designer specializing in hand lettering and typographic logos. Most Modestans have probably never heard of Parkinson though his work is ubiquitous. He created or refreshed iconic logos and nameplates for Billboard Magazine, Chicago Tribune, Esquire, FastCompany, Los Angeles Times, Newsweek, Rolling Stone, Variety, Wall Street Journal, and Washington Post, to name a few. Parkinson infuses his type designs with a retro sensibility often inspired by old wood type and signage. Several of his typefaces are named after California towns (e.g., Amador and Fresno). But Parkinson’s Modesto font has particular personal significance to him. His grandfather, Lowell Gum, grew up on a

farm near Hanford, worked at the Modesto Creamery, and lived in Modesto (near the McHenry Library) until he died in the flu epidemic of 1918. Parkinson’s Modesto font is based on a signpainter’s lettering style popular in the late 19th and early 20th centuries like that on the old evaporated milk cans from the Modesto Creamery where his grandfather worked. Parkinson’s Modesto font evolved from lettering he created in the 1970s for the iconic Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus. But he took his initial inspiration from the lettering on Modesto’s train station. According to Parkinson, “I took a snapshot of the lettering on the Modesto train station several decades ago and modeled the [Modesto] typeface on that lettering.” Who knew?! Why are so few people aware of our rich design history and heritage? How might we foster a creative culture in Modesto that values design, invention and innovation? Ralston’s Goat

has a new Chef!

Chef Gil Alfaro started At Ralston’s Goat in December, and they are very proud to have him. Chef Gil has been cooking over 20 years, and won first place at the Del Osso Farms BaconFest in 2016, and is going back again this year. When I asked what dish he loves to cook, he responded, “Oh! Everything! I love to cook it all!” But at home his favorite dinner is eggs and beans. “It’s my favorite dinner. I will never tire of eggs! I eat them all the time.” He asked what we wanted to eat, and I told him to make us some of his favorite dishes to prepare. He brought out an appetizer sampler of calamari, chicken wings, and mozzarella squares. The squares were my favorite part of the plate for sure. I adore anything with cheese! Next, he brought out a fruit and nut medley chicken, made with a base of Rodin Ranch fruit spread, alongside a pesto risotto pyramid. Every bite was a flavor explosion! Third course was vegan zucchini boats with pulled jack fruit and polenta topped with mushrooms and spinach. A delicious vegan dish, that you would not know was vegan unless someone told you it was. (And even then, you might not believe them!) Lastly, he served his famous prime rib and prawns with mashed potatoes and veggies. The marvelously-marbled serving was seasoned and seared to absolute perfection. You barely had to chew it as it would melt in your mouth.

GO MODESTO! He definitely saved the best for last! Between MJ and I, we cleared the whole plate! I know our usual ChefView writer Dana Johnson would agree with us on the steak! He makes everything from scratch, and you can taste it in every bite. Chef Gil will be making some seasonal updates to the menu, so swing by the next time you’re downtown. You will not be disappointed. (If you order an alcoholic beverage, I also highly recommend the peach lemon drop!)

Walk the Stage for United Way - April 13

Everyone needs a hand sometime and everyone can lend a hand. United Way helps bring our community together and will be hosting a spring fashion show where many local leaders will be walking the Runway. For 66 years the Oakdale Saddle Club has hosted cowboys from all across the country to dig it out in the dirt at the rodeo grounds on the second weekend in April. The week leading up to the Oakdale Rodeo has all sorts of fun events and fundraisers. Team roping starts off early in the week followed by the Rodeo Queen coronation. The next day the Cowgirl Luncheon annually has over 450 cowgirls gathering at the Gene Bianchi Community center for an afternoon rodeo kick-off fun! Slack on Friday leads into the biggest community event, the Rodeo Parade on Saturday. Friends and family line downtown ‘F’ Street and celebrate 66 years of Rodeo, Ranching and community. It’s definitely one of the biggest and best parades in the Central valley. Along the Parade route you’ll hear Kat Country 103 announcing the variety of entries from the mounted units to the bands and many floats combined with a soundtrack from some of the best Country Music Cowboys like George Strait, Chris Ledoux, Garth Brooks and more. The Rodeo Parade is truly an amazing display

of hard work, dedication and pride the local ranchers, cowboys and community have in their city. After the Parade join some cowboys and cowgirls and try to squeeze into a booth or barstool at the historic H-B Saloon before the first Rodeo event. If you make it in to the H-B, make sure to take in all the Oakdale History and Rodeo memorabilia that deck the walls… and a cold one if so inclined! For more on the history of Oakdale and the Rodeo, just go across plaza from the H-B Salon to the Cowboy Museum. You’ll find detailed displays from some of the best Rodeo Cowboys and cowgirls out of Oakdale and fantastic galleries that honor the heritage of the American cowboy The rodeo events each day are fast paced, action packed and a blast for the whole family! Everyone in the arena is on their feet, cheering on their favorite local cowboys and cowgirls to bring home another championship buckle! Metal Noise: * Merced’s Cursed just got signed to record label Seventh Sun Records. Cursed brings back that old school death metal sound live on stage. Congratulations guys! *Metzger (German for Butcher) is a new heavy metal band out of Modesto. Metzger will take you on a musical journey that will be utterly fascinating but not for the squeamish or faint of heart. They consist of Butcher on vocals, Scab on lead guitar, Mogar on Bass and Porno on drums. They are describing their sound as alternative, groove, trench, thrash and death. “You will be the meat on my hook.” Look for them at future shows.

METAL 2017 Spring Meltdown by Eve Oberlander Modesto’s Sworn To The Black and Merced’s Cursed are on the bill for this year’s 2017 Spring Meltdown metal festival with headliners ORIGIN and Ghoul. There are plenty of 209 metal bands attending too, including Stockton’s Accidently Murdered and Symbolik and Sonora’s Echoes of the Forgotten. Other headliners include: Goatwhore, Skinlab, WRVTH, AlterBeast, All Hail the Yeti and Stanislaus County’s Arkaik. This three-day metal fest is brought to you by Born Dead Productions and held in South Lake Tahoe, Nevada at the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino April 20th thru the 22nd. Showcases the Month of April Modesto’s premiere acoustic fest is back in full swing this month! The sixth annual Modesto Unplugged Music Festival is showcasing a flavorful spread of Americana, bluegrass, Celtic and more, in a series of intimate listening concerts from now through April 30. Friday 3/31 is our opening night featuring Gaelynn Lea, winner of the 2016 NPR Tiny Desk Contest. Gaelynn bewitches scores of fans with her experimental and ambient takes on Irish fiddle music, incorporating her love of traditional tunes, songwriting, poetry and sonic exploration. She’s been playing violin for over twenty years, developing an improvisational style all her own. 7:30 at the Gottschalk Music Center recital hall, 1502 E St., $15. NON PROFIT Americana Stars Sing for Camp Jack Hazard For 93 years, Camp Jack Hazard has offered many kids their first wilderness experience. Jack and Buena Hazard started taking kids camping in the Stanislaus National Forest in the 1920s, and the camp has been in continuous operation every summer since. Created by the YMCA the camp is now operated by the non-profit The Jack and Buena Foundation where “fundraising is a part of camp operations” and managed by Executive Director Jason Poisson. With this fundraising, financial assistance is provided for more than onethird of the campers.” Four nationally-recognized country music artists will be coming to Modesto for the 6th Annual Camp Jack Hazard Benefit Concert on April 14th 2017 at the Gallo Center for the Arts. Singer-songwriters Gold and Platinum selling Jerrod Niemann, Michael Tyler, Caroline Jones, and Matt Gary will be performing to benefit

the local summer camp. The artists featured this year are all country music artists on rotation at “The Big Dog,” Modesto’s newest country music radio station and are performing through a partnership with iHeart Media. “We know country music has a huge base in the Central Valley,” said Poisson, “and the campfires at Camp Jack Hazard always feature the songs of American singer-songwriters.” National star Brett Dennen is also a Camp Jack Hazard alum. “Paul Tischer” and “performing arts” are synonymous.

From the annual performances of the Nutcracker, high school shows, to the elaborate stagings of the Modesto Performing Arts, to roles both on stage and off, Paul has been one of the guiding talents in a community that has launched very successful stars. Having people that give their all to bringing talent to the stage is key to Modesto’s success. Paul graduated from San Francisco State in 1966 and has been teaching for Modesto City Schools since then. Performing arts has been his life and to celebrate his dedication, the theater at Modesto High is named the “Paul Tischer Auditorium”. Let me introduce you to Paul. Paul Tischer: I was born and raised in San Francisco - born nine days before Pearl Harbor, so I had a rather ominous beginning. I loved SF. It was a great city to grow up in. I still think SF is one of the most beautiful cities in the country. The arts, plays, the opera, the ballet, and the symphony are fantastic. I still go to the city frequently for the arts. ModestoView: When did your love of the theatre and the performing arts begin? PT: All of my schooling was in San Francisco. As far back as I can remember, I was always interested in the theatre. As a young child I was always making up my own theater productions and doing them for the local neighborhood kids. Some people have to choose their life’s work. Not me. The theatre chose me. I attended Aptos Junior High School (where Carol Channing also attended before me). I did junior high school plays and then went on to high school at Abraham Lincoln High School, which I actually sneaked into as it was out of my district. What is notable here is that the theater at Lincoln High was almost identical to the Modesto High School Auditorium! They were both built at the same time so I’m guessing they more or less used the same plans. I graduated from Lincoln High where the ceremony took place on the stage at the San Francisco Opera House. I was elated. I missed the deadline in applying for college, so I spent a year working at a department store in downtown San Francisco. It retrospect

that was one of the best things ever to happen to me. I applied to San Francisco State College and became a Freshman the following year and due to my father’s disability, I had to work and pay my own way through college. I, of course, majored in drama. I loved it! Five years later I got my teaching credential and was ready to teach drama, but I spent all summer interviewing and trying to get a job with no luck. Everyone wanted a Drama/English teacher, which I did not have because my minor was in industrial art woodshop. (If you’re going to do high school plays, I figured, you really ought to know how to built sets.) In the long run, the minor turned out to be a very smart decision. As the fall approached I decided to look one more time. Of the hundreds of applications that had been there earlier in the summer, there was only one left. My heart leapt. A school district was looking for a woodshop teacher in Modesto. (Where is that?!) Next day I got on a Greyhound bus (you don’t own a car in SF!) headed for Modesto, wherever it is. Oh please, let Modesto be in California! I arrived in Modesto, did the interview, and got the job. Whew! Three days later I started teaching. MV: What was the very first theatre production that you produced? PT: In the spring of 1966 I took over the drama department and did my very first musical ever, My Fair Lady.

By Chris Murphy MV: How did Modesto Performing Arts come to be? PT: In 1968 a number of my students wanted to know if we could do a summer production. The result was the Modesto Youth Theatre production of The Boy Friend as part of the Modesto City Schools summer school program that was to be a one-time show. It was so successful that we did a second, third and fourth year, and the rest is history. Prop. 13 ended summer school funding so we incorporated as Modesto Performing Arts at first limited to high school students, later we included college students, and later adults and everyone. Today we even include professional performers from New York and Los Angeles. At 50 years we are one of the oldest community theatres in California. We continue to do the Broadway musicals, but we also do children’s plays and nonmusical plays, such as A Christmas Carol. MV: If you could go back and redo the last 50 years, what would that be? PT: I’m still amazed that what was a childhood impossible dream came true. I reached for the stars - and it happened! For me, there truly is no business like show business. I love it! There is absolutely nothing I would change. Although my dream of having our own theatre is still on my wish list. MV: What was one of your most memorable productions? PT: In 1976, we decided we would write our own show to celebrate the bicentennial. It would contain highlights and big moments in American history, starting with 1776 to the present, every scene would take place on July 4th, thus the title, The Grand and Glorious Fourth. There was no end to the spectacle on stage and a cast of a hundred. It was a big hit with audiences. MV: It takes a village to make theatre productions come to life; how have the MPA team members inspired you over the decades? PT: In all those years, I have been blessed with the most dedicated and talented musicians and production staff: my scenic designers, lighting designers and costume designers and all the back stage people who move all the big sets around for each scene change. Doing theatre is truly a team effort without whom the show would not go on.

MV: Do you have anything that you are particularly excited about in the upcoming season? PT: This summer we will be performing Oliver! and Billy Elliot, the musical. Oliver! has always been a favorite of mine. This is the fifth time I’ve done the show so I have it down pat. But it’s Billy Elliot, the musical, that I’m particularly excited about. As with all musicals, you must secure the rights from New York and pay the royalty fee. Unfortunately, most newer shows on Broadway aren’t often available. So I was greatly surprised when we got the rights to Billy Elliot. It’s an amazing Tony winning musical about a boy who wants to pursue the dancing but everyone conspires against him. It’s a great show. There are ten dance numbers, from ballet to tap - nearly all danced by Billy. Some are simple and easy. Others are spectacular! We were lucky to get Rene Daveluy of Central West Ballet to choreograph the dance numbers. This is one show I’m really looking forward to! MV: What can our readers expect at this gala performance? PT: As for the 50th Gala on April 22: we have over one hundred and fifty of our alumni performers coming back to perform at the Gallo Center for the Arts. They’ll perform the songs they did in their original productions. Plus, there are some numbers with the entire cast on stage - all 150 plus. We’re even reviving a couple of the dance numbers from 42nd Street and A Chorus Line. In addition, we’ll be showing photos of many of our past productions. Some going back almost 50 years. A reception in the lobby will follow MV: How can more people get involved in the performing arts? PT: We are always looking for new talent. To perform in our shows, one needs to audition, just like on Broadway. Want to work backstage? Just come and see us and we’ll get you on board. MV: Our signature Question. Beatles or Stones? PT: I grew up in the 60’s - so it has to be the Beatles!

ROCKABILLY J St. Rumble is About to Happen! by Jenn Allsup

One of the newest Rockabilly bands on the block, formed in 2016, is The Troubles of a Handsome Man. Comprised of Cole Rambo on guitar/vocals, Kyle Westall on bass/vocals and Clay Ruddy on fiddle. Check out The Troubles of a Handsome Man at the J Street Rumble, April 22nd at 7pm at Modspot, 1220 J St., Modesto. (Also playing is the Voodoo Killers and The Gamblers Mark. Hosted by Greasers Social Club Central Valley and Trevino’s Barber Shop.) MV: How did you fellas meet? What was your inspiration to start a band together? Cole: Kyle and I have been close friends for a while and had played music off and on over the years and I think we finally got to the point that

we wanted to get serious with it and make a record. I had a few acoustic songs that I’d been working on that I brought to the table, Kyle put down his guitar and picked up a bass and that was that. I met Clay when he joined my hockey team and once I found out he played violin I had to have him. MV: What are your long-term goals as far as playing music together? All: This is our creative outlet, all three of us would be playing and writing music one way or another without each other, but the fact that we’re such good friends adds to the experience and definitely helps us make the best music we can, so as long as we can stand each other we’ll be playing music together, whether that’s in a

bar, on the street or wherever. MV: What do you think about driving alone in the car? Cole: 90% of our songs originated on long days in the car at work, then I bring them in and the boys put their stink on it. Kyle: It depends what I’m doing in the car. If it’s a podcast I’m listening to it’s usually something the people on it are talking about and my mind will wonder off of that. If it’s music, I usually am thinking about if I’m singing along with the right words or not. Clay: I’m super safe, so when I drive I like to clear my mind and focus on safety. MV: You’re a new addition to the crayon box. What color would you be and why? Cole: Flesh color, so I blend in and nobody talks to me. Kyle: Green......I’m a huge fan of horticulture. Clay: I would be the color orange. Not a lot of bands have an orange member. I play instruments that aren’t too common in bands, and orange isn’t the most typical of colors.

With more traditional venues such as the Fat Cat and Hero’s no longer an option, this is what we all have to do. Nothing But Losers are a prime example of a band that has embraced new territories performing more often than ever in Sacramento and Fresno. 100th Anniversary of Woodward/Oakdale Reservoir by Lloyd G. Ploutz, Historian Congratulations to the South San Joaquin Irrigation District for its 100 years of service to the public of this area. Our lakes, reservoirs, canals and dams all began in 1866 when C. C. Wright was elected to our State Assembly from the community of La Grange. He was a visionary from Iowa. In 1887 the “Wright Act” was passed in Sacramento to legalize public ownership of irrigation projects throughout California. This allowed the Modesto Irrigation, Oakdale Irrigation and the Turlock Irrigation Districts to be formed and then sell bonds to finance their projects It was not an easy sell as not all farmers and ranchers were not in complete agreement with cost and the benefits of organized water projects in the valley and the state. The “Wheaton Dam” in La Grange was the first dam in Stanislaus County in 1852. It was privately financed to provide water for the town of La Grange and to meet the local demands of the gold miners for water and power. In 1891

the “La Grange Dam” was built right over the top of the Wheaton Dam. This was a joint venture of the Modesto Irrigation and the Turlock Irrigation Districts. This dam was completed in 1893. As stated above, thanks to the Wright Act of 1887 the districts were able to fund the projects with bond money. The La Grange Dam when completed was the tallest over the top flowing dam in the “WORLD” and it still stands to this day. Remember the old saying? “WATER FOR HORSES AND WISKEY IS FOR DRANKING AND FIGHTING” Water as always was a very political subject that lead to many people fighting over its use and its rights of ownership. Stanislaus County has Lake Don Pedro (the third largest lake in California), Lake Dawson, Lake Floto, Turlock and Modesto reservoirs. There are thousand of miles of developed canals in Stanislaus County which is why it is the number one reason for our success, growth and recognition as the

major provider of food to the world. This is a beautiful and breath-taking time of the year to go visit the lakes, reservoirs and dams in the Stanislaus area. Take your favorite

great month of music. Starting things out with something new to me is the Sierra Beer Train on April 1st with the Poorhouse Millionaires. The train leaves from Oakdale and heads up into the mountains for a 3 hour tour complete with snacks and drinks. It’s a great way to say goodbye to the work week and hello to relaxation. A gorgeous view, too! A favorite event of the ViewCrew. On the 8th at the Portal in Modesto 3 great local R&B/Blues bands are on the same bill: Big Earl and the Cryin’ Shame, Shad Harris and the Groovinatiors and the Rob Hill Band. This one is special to me because I am helping to put it together. We are seriously going to to tear the roof off of this party, friends. Honestly this is going to be the show that marks the start of the season for me. Take a moment and mark this one down, do not miss it. On April 21st the unforgettable Terrie Londee and the B-4 Dawn Band will be back at the Vintage Lounge Piano Bar in Turlock. They

play a great danceable mix of Funk, R&B and Classic Rock. Terrie keeps it fun and you will be smiling. Poorhouse Millionaires will be making their Sandude Brewing Modesto debut on the 28th. I am super proud of what we are doing with this project. We have a bunch of new original songs and we can’t wait to share them with our Modesto friends and family. On April 29th Jeramy Norris and the Dangerous Mood will be playing a couple sets at the Hughson Fruit and Nut Festival. It’s a “fun for the whole family” event that goes all weekend with 2 stages and is free to all. Last but not least, for the Jammers: Thursdays in Modesto you can jam with David Dow over at the Barkin’ Dog or you can hear to the Garlic Brothers in Stockton and Jam with Jeramy Norris and the Dangerous Mood. It’s a win-win folks. Have a great month and I hope to see you out at a show.

ficult to accept but it is part of everyone’s life in some way. As devastating as a tragic event may be, it certainly shakes us out of our comfort zone, out of going about our business as usual. I experienced this recently with the loss of a very dear friend. First there was the deep shock of finding out that her life had ended, that I would never see her again. I wondered how I could or how anyone could have controlled or prevented this tragic outcome. I was devastated and struggled to accept what had happened. How could such a lovely, so talented and wonderful human being be torn away from our midst? But as with all tragic events there are no easy answers. The funeral celebrated God and her life very beautifully. It helped me to accept what I cannot change. To let go. As I surrendered to the idea I felt an unimaginable spaciousness, a larger dimension opening inside my mind. A tragic loss often propels people to wake up. We suddenly see the bigger picture. We may realize that we have been small minded, somewhat stingy with our time,

our money and showing our love for people that truly matter to us. We suddenly get that there is so much to be grateful for. We wonder if we could be less controlling and fearful. What that would look and feel like. Life is unpredictable and goes by fast. I wonder if we might be able to give out our love for one another, express ourselves and engage more fully in our communities while we still can. FIT Basketball Madness by Efren Martinez Last month, many of us enjoyed the March Madness basketball games on TV. What caught my attention was not so much the talent these players had but their endurance to be able to continually keep moving from one end of the basketball court to the other. In my neighborhood, March Madness seems to have spread with many of the kids enjoying the weather shooting hoops on our street. Some teenagers even went as far as setting up two hoops on both sides of the street in order to get the full basketball court advantage. I was totally impressed how these teens were able to sustain not only their cardio momentum, but also their hand and eye coordination with the basketball. As a kid I played on a basketball team at the Red Shield sports in Modesto. Honestly I was never very good at it and as I look back at it in my later adult years I realize that I actually stunk at it. Regardless, I have to thank my dad for pushing me into basketball. It not only introduced me into fitness but also taught me how to become a team player. Thanks Dad! Although Basketball is best played in the sunshine

verses in the rain or indoors, unlike soccer which doesn’t matter the weather or place. Both have similar endurance levels when it comes cardio fitness; but the advantages of basketball is that you can walk outside your front door to the street and play. The fitness starts just as soon as you start shooting hoops and then having to retrieve the basketball. There are also other games with the basketball you can play that will get you off the living room sofa such as “Horse” & “Around The World”. These basketball games mostly involve skill verses endurance. So even if you’re not in the best of shape to be able to continuously run back and forth, you can still get in some family fitness with your kids. Friends, our great city of Modesto is filled with free basketball hoops all over town if you don’t have one outside your front door. Simply visit one of our local parks or schools after hours to get your ball-bouncing game on and get moving.

April, what an interesting and just as exciting month! We have officially kissed winter farewell and are embracing Modesto’s fortunate early summer. We as a city are extremely lucky to spend an extended amount of time in the sunshine. There are so many events and things to do, benefiting your environment this month! On April 8th, the city will again be hosting it’s “Love Modesto” day event. I have been involved in this since elementary school and it has enhanced awareness of my surroundings and helped me grow a love for others in need. I really encourage everyone to get involved with this event. There are over 100 projects

I will be at the Downey High School beautification project, look and see if your neighborhood’s school has slot openings! Starting the month on such a positive note, it is only fitting to close the month with more green activities. Earth Day at Graceada Park is another event that you can’t miss! April 22nd is a day spend celebrating how inspiring our planet is, and teaching each other how to preserve it’s beauty. There will be art projects, face painting, music, food, games, vendors and lots of happy people. I look forward to this event every year and it always surpasses my expectations. If you love our planet and enjoy meeting other wonderful Modesto people, this is your month. Let’s make Modesto beautiful for the Spring and have a great time doing so. Amgen Is Coming – May 15

The eyes of the global cycling world will be on Modesto USA on May 15 as the elite of the elite of world cycling ride into downtown Modesto to start Stage 2 of the 2017 Amgen Tour of California. Showcased in a lifestyle family festival that will begin at 7 am, you will be able to see each and every rider as they sign in to the stage and you can check out the team cars, busses and mechanics as they get the riders ready to race to San Jose. Yes friends, just when you thought a pub crawl couldn’t get more fun, here comes BunnyCon 2017. Get your flowers, ears and your cotton tail all ready and head to downtown Modesto on April 8 after Love Modesto. This will be an amazing time, with drink specials at each of the pubs, merriment for all, and of course, a spring time tour of downtown Modesto with the help of your friends and soon to be friends.
