EDITOR’S Greetings Modesto Friends!

Eee haw!

Spring is springing some amazing variety here in the Greater Modesto area. If you are anything like I am, you are scratching your head wondering just how you are going to squeeze in all the cool things to do into your busy daily schedule. But then again, this is a really good problem to have. Imagine, so many interesting things to do that you can’t fit them all in. Yes, my Modesto friends, that is the Modesto that we see here at ModestoView. So many good things happening we can’t even begin to fit them all in to our pages here in the magazine, so that is why they overflow to our ModestoView.com website and why our Facebook.com/modestoview page is growing so fast with nearly 11,000 friends and our twitter.com/modestoview has over 3,000 following so you are always in the know. There is really that much good stuff happening and best of all, so many people that want to know the good stuff about where we live. Even though we are looking at some serious water issues, we look at our area with a glass half full view. All of our challenges can be solved with teamwork and a big view of what we want to be. Stanislaus County is really closely connected and we need to act as one big giant team to make our whole region better. Each city really needs the teamwork of the others and that is why we look to our new CEO of the Stanislaus Alliance David White as he shares our view of teamwork and building a better economy. We take a look at one of area’s legendary events, the Oakdale Rodeo and realize we have world-class and tradition-filled events happening in all of our cities nearby. Downtown Riverbank, Oakdale & Turlock are all less than 15 miles from Downtown Modesto. We need jobs, we need art, we need culture, we need smart water, we need strong and vibrant downtowns, we need good streets and freeways, we need strong schools and education, we need more music, love and friendship. Just like our families, when we act like a team, great things can happen. It is all a bout the greater good my friends. What can we all do that makes our entire community better? ModestoView is here to accentuate the positive, celebrate the teamwork, and make sure that we are all thinking locally with our business, community and cultural efforts. It is up to all of us to take the ordinary day and make it a great day. It doesn’t take that much extra work to make a good event a great event if we all team up. ModestoView has so many great teammates and we are very proud to work with all of you and hope you are having as much fun as we are. Every ViewCrew writer in this magazine is really making a difference in our community and I encourage to read their columns and attend their events. You will really enjoy it. Every business that advertises is the best in town and you should consider their services. They are helping us spread this message of good news for our community. Teamwork is the key and we all need each other to make our community great. Thank you for reading and please let me know what you think about ModestoView and what we can do to make it even better. This is for you and we are so proud to be “Serving Civic Pride Daily since 1997”

Samantha is a member of the Nor Cal Junior Rodeo Association and will competing this month at the LaGrange Junior Rodeo. Greg Scudder and the Beer 30 band play here in the Modesto area most weekends and also gig all over the USA. The amazing Michael J Mangano created this very cute photo illustration to celebrate our rodeo and cowboy heritage. ModestoView would not be possible without the generous support of Sierra Pacific Warehouse Group. Last month I wrote that I wanted to write this column from different places soon. I wrote that I wanted to get out and explore the world a bit. Well, I am home today as I write this but I did, in fact, do some exploring in March and more is planned for April. My girlfriend and I spent a couple of beautiful days in the mountains a week or so ago and it was a great experience. There is something very unique about fresh air, high altitudes and millions of trees. During the time, we were there we didn’t hear any sirens or other “city sounds.” We watched a squirrel play, went on a walk along the beach of a pretty lake, held one another as tight as possible and talked about the future a bit. The last line in that last paragraph includes a word that I am still scared to use sometimes. I still worry that health concerns will come back one day and it is still hard for me to think about my “future.” Nicole understands my concerns and knows the risks involved in making a life with me, but she still stays. Right now she is sleeping peacefully as I type this. I can hear her gently breathing and that sound relaxes me. April will bring an exciting change in my life. I have been living across the street from the McHenry Mansion for nearly two years, but I will be moving. We have agreed to rent a little space closer to the college that is owned by some friends that we are becoming close to. The space that we are moving into is small and it will be a challenge to fit all of our things into it but that doesn’t bother me. It gives us a new start to

save money and grow together. That is the key. It is said that love grows best in little houses. Let’s hope that is true! In addition to the move, I will also try to get to a few events in April. The Oakdale Rodeo is coming and you all know that I am down for any event that allows me to wear a big funny hat. In addition to the rodeo, I just heard that a Danish rockabilly/ metal band is coming to town on April 8th. Wearing a big funny hat to that show would likely get me beat up, but I’m down for anything with the word “Danish” in the title. Those things are delicious! See our event calendar at modestoview.com. You will find all sorts of fun happening. Easter will be very active in Modesto this year. Let’s have a great month. I live to try new things and I will do that as often as possible. My trusty GoPro camera has become my best buddy lately and I take the thing everywhere. Ignore me and just smile please if you see me with it mounted to my head or carrying it around on a giant stick like a tribal warrior heading out to spear fish. I’ll be on social media if you have a story idea. My Twitter account has been racking up nearly 80 new followers daily for over a month from all over the world and I’d love to see you there too. Navigate to twitter. com/writerlifeco to find me. You can email me at r.porras@me.com if you have a great story idea or you see something random like a wandering moose or Bigfoot that you’d like me to take photos of. I’m always ready for an adventure!

May 11. This show replaces the respective galleries juried Spring Shows, using a common jury in a no category, no size limit exhibition. There were over 450 entries, and only the top third as juried will be exhibited. If you are expecting the usual painting heavy Spring Show, you may be surprised, as most in this show will be 3 dimensional and sculptural works. The 140 final pieces, will be divided between the two galleries, so you will need to visit both Mistlin Gallery and Carnegie Arts to see the full exhibition. This one opens after deadline, so we’ll go over it more next month. Thanks to Chef View Dana Johnson as I get to appear on her Fox 40 Cooking show. Art View will be her guest to promote Stanislaus Artist Open Studio, with our segment sponsor, Modesto View. Look for us in the 9 am hour, April

BAR Clampers, and Tigers, and Bears! Oh, my! -- The Other Place Hypothetical

situation: You have been sentenced to die. You know how out of hand you got at Luckyfest after you had all of those car bombs, and the punishment is steep for your St. Paddy’s antics. You must choose: death by pissed-off Siberian tiger, or death by pissed-off grizzly bear. You’re going to be mauled to death no matter which way you go -- so who will it be: a serious weight advantage and a biting force so strong it could crush a bowling ball from the grizzly, or unmatched agility, stealth, and a lethal paw swipe from le tigre? I’m asking the real questions here, people. Phil said bear, but personally, I’m thinking tiger. In my opinion, the entire messy process would be a whole lot quicker, and I’m pretty sure I’d be a huge wuss in a certaindeath sort of situation. Speaking of big bites and powerful shots, have you been to The Other Place recently? Phil and I headed over one afternoon to talk with Bobby Christoulakis, owner and manger of the Other Place (and Spinnaker’s) about dive-bar pride, Clampers, and drinking (my favorite). “We don’t have a single martini glass here,” Bobby told me. “If you order a martini -you’re going to get it in a rocks glass. We are not an upper-class establishment, but everyone is welcome. We have fun here, and you’re going to have fun if you come by, too.” And you know what? Martinis taste the same no matter what glass they’re poured it -- it is the quality of your surroundings and company that make the difference, and I will gladly forfeit stems for good talk -- plus it looks pretty badass. I had never been to The Other Place before, and I drank my drinks out of rocks glasses, and I did have an excellent time. In addition to being the longest running bar under the same family in Modesto, the bar is well stocked, they have Lagunitas on tap (don’t tell Dust Bowl I’m cheating on them), big screen TVs projecting the appropriate seasonal games, bartender Christina pouring Sweet Tart shots, an ample stage to accommodate the constant stream of live local music The Other Place supports, and

by Kate Serpa Photos by Philip Johnson

Bobby in the center of it all striking up conversations with everyone who walks in the door, drumming up Clamper support, and being a quality mid-afternoon drinking buddy for me. Quick Note: A red shirt and a penchant for drinking does not a Clamper make. This fraternal “historical drinking society”/ “drinking historical society” thrives on the preservation of local history, champions charitable community works, and considers The Other Place to be a viable home of Chapter 58. I’m pretty sure a Clamper wouldn’t have to choose between a tiger or a bear -- he’d probably say something tough like “both” and end up winning the whole damn thing. If I said “both”, I’d probably say it with my eyes closed and because I wanted to get the whole ordeal over with faster. On the other hand, if it was me versus ‘martini-in-rocksglass’ or ‘martini-in-martini-glass’, I could totally be badass and say “both”. That is definitely a fighting match I would win. 2003 Yosemite Blvd., Modesto, CA 209.524.2450 www.facebook.com/theOp209

Saddle Up! We Are Heading To The House Of Beef! by Dana Johnson

Howdy Partners! Let’s give a big Yeehaw & Happy Anniversary to Steve and Cindi Medlen’s House of Beef (HOB) for rounding up 35 years in business this month, right here in Oakdale’s dubbed Cowboy Capitol of the World. HOB has been feeding cowboys and cowgirls hearty plates beyond its doors that originally opened as a meat processing business 35 years ago. Now it hosts a full restaurant, meat counter, catering, and a beer & wine bar. Steve and Cindi have been married for 44 years in June. They have lived in Oakdale for their entire lives and are also home to their 3 grown children and their 2 grandkids. A real cowboy family! Every Sunday Steve spends his only day off on his private property on the Stanislaus River working on what sounds like an endless project building a mini-city and park for a special place to gather with his family only accessible by their 4 wheel drive trucks! Sounds like a blast! Steve comes from a long line of butchers and his son, Butch, also is following in the meat processing trade. Steve is a big fan of the HOB’s rib eye, Cindi has the salmon almost daily, granddaughter Danika, age 14 is a baby back rib lover, and grandson Wyatt, age 5 likes to try everything on the menu! I like that lil’ cowpoke’s style when it comes to chow time! Go for the filet mignon Wyatt! Can you hear me? I’m ringing the cowboy triangle dinner bell while shouting “Keep them doggie’s rolling, Rawhide!” Geez I hope I don’t create a stampede to get into the House of Beef! I imagine a genuine hard-working cowboy might order the 16oz rib eye steak and a full slab of ribs, served with endless soup, salad bar, and garlic bread, with choice of sides like mash

10

potatoes or chili beans, and finish with the most amazing Apple Dumpling, it is one of my favorites with a scoop of vanilla ice cream & drizzled in caramel! It’s also known that most of the cowgirls can’t resist the Fudgy Wudgy dessert! While the Rockslide Brownie isn’t on the menu, now you know you can just ask for it because Dana~licious told you so! When purchasing your fresh meats at HOB to grill at home you might also want to pick up some seasoning s***! Yep names like Good S***, Special S***, Aw S***, and sauces called BBQ S*** & Hot S***! Now that’s some funny s***! Equally funny is the name Testicle Festival every March in Oakdale & the HOB allows much of the food prep to be done in their kitchen. HOB also does the food for the cowgirl luncheon associated with the Oakdale Rodeo held in April. Mount up & I’ll see ya’ll there with spurs on! Modesto View signature question: Steve is the winner by answering Stones! Cindi said Beatles since they had the best songs out there as far back to when she was a freshman in high school!

BIZ The Careers in Manufacturing by Irene Arroyo The Careers in Manufacturing (CIM) is back! The success of the program last year 2013, with 139 students gaining summer employment with one of the 11 employers involved, is serving as a catalyst for our local youth. The program brings together various groups of employers, educators, and workforce development professionals. Stanislaus Partners in Education (SPIE), Manufacturers Council of the Central Valley (MCCV), and the Alliance WorkNet have partnered again to help high school seniors throughout the County gain insight in careers in the Manufacturing Industry. The Careers in Manufacturing program works with local Career Technical Education program students, providing them with an orientation to career opportunities in the industry, followed by a paid summer job with a local manufacturer. Executives from local companies such as Frito Lay, Silgan Containers and Morning

Star, and Sierra Pacific Warehouse Group provide the interested students with inside info on what it’s like to work for their company. These “Road Shows’ also share valuable information on what it takes to climb the ladder of success within their business. The employers who participate in Careers in Manufacturing represent outstanding opportunities for young people to learn the skills necessary to succeed in potentially high-paying careers with some of the best known companies in America. CIM serves as a catalyst for students to pursue continued education and training for the industry, and in some cases leads to permanent full-time positions. For more information on the program, contact Irene Arroyo/Steve Chisholm at 209-558-7854.

MV: Stanislaus County feeds the world, yet we are facing many challenges like water and lack of available production quality facilities. There is a high tech world of agriculture and food production that would be a perfect fit for our county. What do we need to do to attract these businesses? DW: Again, we should build upon our strengths. As long as people need to eat, we will need agriculture and food processing. Stanislaus County can be the best in class throughout the whole world in terms of innovation in this vital industry. We have ag tech companies here that are doing amazing research and development of more efficient farming techniques, better vines and trees that are more drought and salt resistant, and more innovation into new equipment and procedures that modernize the industry. The Alliance is developing a cluster economic development strategy through which we will grow, support and communicate these strong local industries. We will form cluster teams of experts who will connect us to companies in their supply chain that should be here or to peers in their industry who are expanding. We will communicate their successes through our various means of communication; MV: What would you say would be the 5 most important keys to success to jump start our local economic development and job creation? 1) Make the Alliance the best economic development organization in the state – make sure our team holds true to our values of trust, respect, passion, and alignment.

2) Develop a spirit of cooperation throughout the county. Even though we compete, we need to project unity and collaboration to the outside world. 3) Make sure the public sector and private sector are aligned and totally committed to economic development. 4) Everyone be proud of our county and the cities in which we live. We don’t need to apologize for anything. 5) Make Stanislaus County the most business friendly county in the state. We do

this by how we handle permitting, how we welcome and support business, and how we address the needs of business. You should never have an antagonistic view toward business no matter where you live but especially not in a county with 12 percent unemployment. These are all things we can control. A lot of it has to do with our attitude. As Stephen R. Covey put it, do we possess an “abundant attitude” or a “scarcity attitude”? MV: If you had a magic wand, what would you do to fundamentally change our community?

DW: I would want to change our attitude. What changed Pittsburgh was their can do attitude. They loved their city, and they would not accept failure. Again, we should not apologize for anything. MV: What idea that you have seen in other communities would you most like to do here in our area? DW: We are implementing a very intense and comprehensive business visitation program. We will do hundreds of interviews this year with business executives. The survey is designed to understand the issues that businesses face and also to gather lots of aggregate data which will help us influence public policy decisions. We will also develop a cluster economic development strategy to truly build upon our strengths.

MV: Like you, ModestoView is a strong supporter of making downtown Modesto vibrant both for our own civic pride as well as our economic well being and attracting travel and tourism business. What is your view of the role of a strong downtown? DW: Downtown is a community’s living room. It’s what people see when they come to a city. When the Downtown is thriving, the whole city will thrive. I was just in Turlock, and I saw young mothers pushing strollers along Downtown Turlock streets in the middle of a work day. That is a sure sign of a thriving Downtown when young mothers feel safe enough to take their young children out for a stroll in a Downtown environment. Downtowns also attract young professionals. Every city wants the 25-49

year old young professionals. We should understand their needs and wants and then do what we can to accommodate them. MV Since you have recently relocated here, what have been some of your favorite Modesto moments to date? DW: Riding our bikes along the various trails. We especially love the Dry Creek Trail in Modesto. We also love the various local restaurants. People here may not realize this, but the restaurants here are exceptional. We love all the beautiful trees, shrubbery and gardens that we see everywhere. But most of all we love the people. Good, down to earth, friendly, hardworking people. MV: Describe your ideal evening in Modesto?

DW: Going out with my wife to a quaint Italian restaurant in any one of our Downtowns and then catching a show at the Gallo Center or any other local theater (of which there are several all throughout the county). MV: And the most important questions of all, Beatles or Stones? DW: I am a huge Beatles fan. In fact, I have been singing and playing the Beatles for the past 30 years. My favorite Beatle is John, an amazingly gifted talent who in my opinion drove the creativity of the Beatles. My favorite Beatle as a person was George. He had a big heart and great compassion for people who suffered in life. My favorite Beatles song? A Day in the Life.

building will be between 9th and 10th and G and H, about one block from the current courthouse and less than a block from the temporary make-shift courts in the old city hall building and in the Tower Building at 10th and H. The site was chosen from two excellent possibilities, either of which would have been good for downtown Modesto. Now that the decision has been made, I will do what I can to make the chosen site the best for the future of Modesto. A new courthouse on 10th street is an opportunity for some creative place-making in a part of downtown in need of restoration and increased vibrancy. Already the downtown design committee is discussing how to best incorporate the building site into the downtown fabric. We don’t yet know what the courthouse will look like, but I’ve heard it will be designed by SOM (Skidmore, Owings, and Merrill), an architecture firm with a worldwide reputation and capable of designing a world-class building for Modesto. I hope the building will reflect Modesto’s long history of being on the cutting edge of contemporary architecture and reflect green, sustainable 21st century design. I would like to see an iconic building with publicly displayed art and historic Stanislaus Country artifacts. Top on the list would be the statue of Justice that stood on the 1870s courthouse. Our first courthouse, a Victorian style building, was designed by Albert A. Bennett and opened in the early 1870s. The second courthouse, opened in 1960, was designed by Mitchell Van Bourg, a student of Bauhaus Movement founder Walter Gropius at Harvard. Its design has elements that reflect the Bauhaus tradition but with adaptations to our local environment that make it an example of Central Valley Modernist architecture for which Modesto is famous. The new courthouse will also give Modesto a second chance at a courthouse square. Our first courthouse was surrounded by a park, most of which has long ago disap-

peared. Since the new courthouse will cover an entire city block, I’d like to see as much open area as possible with landscaping and outdoor areas for everyone to enjoy. What qualities would you like to see in our new courthouse? Bob Barzan bbarzan@yahoo.com

here is so much variety here in the “greater Modesto area” a.k.a. Stanislaus County. We have awesome urban dining, world-class music, concerts in the park, a great community full of dynamic people and some giant festivals and events. When I was in high school in the 70s, one of the big events had a visit from Farrah Fawcett Majors, accompanied by then Bionic Man Lee Majors. Yes It’s true. (Admit it, you had the same poster I had) This was huge. Why were they here? Well they were here for the world-famous Oakdale Rodeo. The Oakdale Rodeo is one of the legendary events in the cowboy world. It is no wonder that Oakdale has billed itself as the “Cowboy Capitol of the World” for most of the years since Oakdale was founded in 1871. Today, Oakdale still lives this lifestyle. Rodeo animals parade the streets, the Miss Oakdale Rodeo is crowned and the entire city celebrates at many of the local bars and venues that stay true to the cowboy culture and the Oakdale Rodeo Grounds host world-class completion that attracts the superstars of rodeo. The Oakdale Rodeo has been celebrating this rich and fun tradition since the first champions of the Rodeo, Ike Rude / Willie Clay were crowned in 1948. Since 1951, the annual Oakdale Rodeo been a must do event in the Professional Rodeo Cowboy Association (PRCA) Rodeo season. The Oakdale Rodeo was the first outdoor rodeo in the Western US and today is one of the largest yearly traditions of the PRCA circuit. The serious championships that take place on the rodeo grounds make this weekend so much more than a great festival. Records will be broken and you may see a new cowboy/cowgirl superstar emerge. The main events are Saturday and Sunday at the rodeo grounds. Even if you are just a city slicker or metro-cosmopolitan individual, there is so much fun to be had all week long in Oakdale. There are parties, music and frivolity at the bars and restaurants and the action at the Rodeo grounds is exciting with exhilarating thrills and spills. We had a blast when we went during high school and you will enjoy it no matter how old you are. Be a part of history and you will get a “new View” of our community and meet many new friends.

Clamper Monument

The Ancient and Honorable Order of E Clampus Vitus (a.k.a The Clampers) has raised historical plaques in many places throughout the west with a traditional “doin’s,” or party, after each plaque dedication. These are now common in historical areas around California and the West. The Clampers are making a very special presentation this year honoring the living history of the Oakdale Saddle Club for their dedication to the Cowboy culture, both history and the future. “When you purchase a ticket to the Oakdale Rodeo, and as soon as you walk through the gates you are walking back into time and you are participating in the living history of the western life style of the Cowboy. This is truly a living history.” said Charles “Animal” McIntyre, Noble Grand Humbug of Estanislao Chapter #58. AUTHOR “Happy Trails”

by Ken White

(Author Note: The only autobiographical parts of this story are the photographs.) The analog marquee fronting the Holiday Inn reads: “WILD WEST FILM FESTIVAL.” Inside, the hotel lobby and meeting rooms are filled with memorabilia, autograph tables, arts and crafts, souvenirs, food, and celebrities. The white hats, black hats, redskins, damsels in distress, and second bananas of countless Hollywood “oaters.” All recognizable through the gray and wrinkles. Roy Rogers shakes hands. He wears his trademark white, cowboy hat. Fringed and sequined cowboy shirt. Red, white, and blue eagle cowboy boots. The All-American Hero. With that easy smile. He flashed it and all the world was safe. Even from a Russian A-bomb. I’m the next in line. I step up to face Roy. “Got all your movies on video,” I say. “Well, buckaroo, my accountant appreciates that,” Roy replies. “You were my baby-sitter for a lot of Saturday mornings.” “Looks like we did a good job.” “Could sleep nights because you and Gene and Hopalong were watching out for me. Never prayed to God. Prayed to you.” “God shoots straighter.” “Wanted my father to be you.” “If wishes were horses, then beggars would ride.” “What kind of a man shows you how to pee on a fire, but never lets you win? Anything.” “Pard, a cowboy who tells the truth always has one foot in the stirrup.” “You raised a large family. Adopted lots of kids. They all turned out. What’s the secret?” Rory, my girlfriend, appears at the end of the table. “A good woman,” Roy says, noticing Rory. “Old man blew that one out of the gate,” I say. “A sense of humor.” “Lost that when we were born.” “And patience. Lots and lots of patience.” “Strike three. Drove my brother off. Then me.” “A boy’s struggle with his father makes him a man,” Roy points out. “That makes me Superman.” “What’s your name, son?” “Kevin.” Roy signs an 8X10 glossy of him and Trigger and Bullet. “You want his approval?” “Yes.” “Make him a grandfather. I wager he’ll surprise you.” Roy gives me the photograph. “Mind if I get a picture?” I ask. Roy stands. I come around the table. Rory snaps the camera. “You are your father,” Roy says. “Know that.” I shake Roy’s hand. “Potty break. Good thing I don’t ride anymore. My bladder’s in worse shape than old Nellybelle.” Roy touches the brim of his hat and leaves. I look at the signed photograph. The dedication reads: “To Kevin – A father is just a man, not a hero. Cut him some slack. Happy Trails, Roy Rogers.”

ZEN Natural Beauty by Mary Layton Driving

to work the other day I saw a young woman with a backpack walking alone alongside the blooming peach orchards. It was a glorious morning, blue skies and the air soft and sweet with the smell of spring. The woman’s long redish hair gently moved behind her like a horse’s mane. I was struck by the natural beauty of the scene. Then I had several thoughts in short succession. – This is strange, people don’t walk around here. – Is the woman safe walking by herself? – Has she lost her car or had it broken down? With other words, even though it was the perfect day to go for a walk, my mind was going over issues. Well...I guess we are so used to drive everywhere, even short distances, because it is faster,

cooler, warmer or drier, more convenient and safer. But we also miss so much of the connection with our natural environment. A friend of mine who actually did lose his car, told me that he’s postponing buying a new one, because he really enjoys seeing the sunrise as he walks to the bus stop in the morning on his way to work. He says it’s a connection that he didn’t have before, to the elements(rain or shine), to the smells and looks of our rural setting. And also to himself, walking and feeling his own energy move. Springtime in Modesto, and the rest of the valley, is truly beautiful. When the almond orchards begin blooming in February the

place looks like heaven on earth. That show lasts usually 2 weeks. I always take pictures. If those white, sparkly blossoms don’t get knocked off by heavy rains, they will float down to orchard floor where they leave a white cover that looks like snow. In March and April, with temperatures climbing into the 70’s, Spring has sprung. Time to weed and prune, hang in the backyard. Go for walks. Tulips and trees are blooming. Everything looks vibrant with new life. The warmth and the quality of sunlight is at it’s best. I want to enjoy this natural beauty in the countryside, seize the moment and take a nice walk. taichi4modesto.com or call (209) 572-4518

MAMA

Wow is it April already? by Middagh Goodwin

Spring

has sprung and the weather has been so nice. It is time we all get away from the hustle and grind of everyday life and enjoy some great live music. Here in Modesto we are actually quite lucky because just about every touring act drives through our city and we have been getting more and more to STOP and play for us. April is jam packed with great acts from all over the country and the world performing just for us. Kicking things off right away Friday April 4th at The Brewhouse at Hero’s we have The Midnight Ghost Train(Kansas) playing some heavy blues fueled rock and roll joined by Divest Dreggs(members of Nothing But Losers 2011 Metal) and Breaking Chainz(2013 Youth Band). Over at the Other Place 209 Productions has a Rock Showcase with Broken Trojan(2013 Rock), Antithesis of It, 17Ten, American Heart Throb and Premartial Death, if you like it loud and local this is the place to be. 80’s Legendary singer of Bow Wow WowAnnabella Lwin(UK) will be performing all their hits (I want Candy, Go Wild in the Country, Do You Wanna Hold Me...) and more on Saturday April 5th at the Brewhouse. BLUES & JAZZ Blue Monday’s back in town. by Eric Benson Rain still in the forecast, yippee! Sounds like a blues weather forecaster, you know things aren’t normal when you’re happy and prayin’ for rain. Well let it rain, let it pour, let it do a whole lot more…cause I want those deep river blues to be ebbing and flowing to us. In the meantime there is plenty getting ready to blossom and flourish in our downtown in weeks to come. One of my favorite artists coming out to be the guest artist at the Blue Monday Party April 7th is Freddie Roulette. Freddie in his late 70’s is one of the best lap-steel guitarists you will ever hear. A fixture on the west coast Blues and Rhythm & Blues circuit since the 1960, Freddie is an eclectic musician. He plays through a Fender twin amp with a volume pedal so when he solo’s he sounds like a Saxophone on steroids. He plays all the tunes that are popular to the steel guitar like country styling, and blues but also plays straight ahead jazz and tunes in odd time signatures. His continues to record and tour internationally and still in demand with groups that want an amazing eclectic soloist to feature. He’s played with Charlie Musselwhite, Harvey Mandel, Maria Muldaur, Calvin Keys, Terry Haggerty, Mofo Party Band, David Mathews, Loyd Gregory, Lady Bianca, Coco Montoya, Henry Kaiser, and many others. Backing up Freddie is the house band with Johnny & Kelly, the mighty Tim Allen on bass, vocals, Darnell Robinson on sax’s, and myself Eric Benson on keys and crowd control. It is an invitational Jam session so come down and sit in, network and hoist a glass to some good music. The State Theatre continues with community friendly booking with the Good Luck Thrift Store outfit with pine Box Boys on May 3rd, ad May 9th Asleep at the Wheel. The Gallo Center for the arts continues with their diverse booking. April 4th is a get the Led out tribute of Led Zeppelin 1V album, (one of my fav’s), 13th SF Scottish Fiddlers, 24th Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, and in May Keb’ Mo’. Hard to imagine Led at the Gallo but hey I’m there!

ACOUSTIC

April is All Acoustic by Aaron Rowan

MUMfest returns to downtown this weekend. For the past two years, this has been the most intense burst of acoustic music in Modesto, showcasing folk, roots, Americana, country and similar sounds from around the nation (and this year, the globe.) Five showcases will be held at various venues around downtown. Friday night 4/4 at Café Deva, our opening show features sweet folkgrass ladies The Daughters Rea from the Sierra Nevada mountains, fresh off a national tour. Postsynth sax rockers The Hot Dark will be coming down the hill from Murphys, and San Joaquin valley songwriters Nathan Ignacio, Rachel Rivero and Mondo Mariscal will each share their own mix of folk, blues and country-rock. 6 PM, $10 cover. Saturday afternoon 4/5 at Queen Bean Coffee, local songstress Patty Hughes and a few of her friends share the stage with visitors coming in from all directions: blues/ Americana group D Henry Fenton & The Elizabethans from L.A., bay area songwriter Doug Adamz, mountain dulcimer composer Steve Eulberg from Colorado, and indie folk trio Snow Apple, all the way from Amsterdam. 1 PM, $5. Saturday night at Center Stage Conservatory (downstairs in the City Center building at 948 11th St.), our centerpiece event showcases SF jug band 5 Cent Coffee, who have just released a fantastically fun new record ‘The Lost Parade’; Santa Cruz folk/ world music trio Silver Mendez; and three phenomenal local outfits - country boys The Dustbowl Children, roots & rockabilly gang Darlin’ Clementine, and Modesto’s premier country-rock singer/songwriter Patty Castillo Davis. 7 PM, $15 at the door. Sunday 4/6 in the late morning/early afternoon, we have a laidback lineup at Peer Recovery Art Project, on the corner of J and

13th. Bay Area string sensations Dirty Cello, the crown jewel of last year’s Fest, will be back with us in duo form, with virtuoso cellist Rebecca Roudman (my vote for most mad-skilled musician in California) and guitarist Jason Eckl. These string players can be found wowing crowds worldwide, and you’ve not truly lived if you’ve not experienced their live set. Also on the roster are Merced-area bluegrassers The Poor Valley Band, roots/Americana duo Hushed & Guilty from up north, old-time country/ gospel duet Sparrow Grove, and indie-pop/ rock band Boscoe’s Brood. $10 for this segment of the festival, running from 11 AM to 3 PM. On Sunday night, there’s an epic closing show back at Center Stage. Nashville recording artist Ray Tarantino, ukulele songwriter Katie Hell, country duo Cottonwood Creek, and Americana slingers The McCoy Tyler Band will all rock the house. And

to close out this year’s festivities, we have assembled a special supergroup dubbed Valley Forged, which features members of Alida & The Geronimos, The Dustbowl Children and Patty Castillo Davis Music. Also that night, we reveal the results of our first annual songwriting contest. Lots of area songwriters took part in this. Our very own Francesca Bavaro (winner of the 2011 ‘Valley’s Got Talent’ contest) is among the top five finalists, each of whom will perform their entry live. Make sure to come by and support her! Closing show starts at 5 PM; cover is $15. As an added bonus, a vast array of visual artists will display their creativity throughout the weekend, including local favorites such as Jen Coffey, Heaven Lindsey-

Burtch, Monica Gunderson, Kristan Roberson and a whole lot more. Also, there will be some ‘tweener’ spots in between the featured bands - short 8-10 minutes slots where you could perform a song or two, or perhaps read a couple pieces of poetry. If you attend any of our showcases and may be interested in sharing a piece or two, look for our signup sheet; perhaps there will be an opening. Gold passes are still available, good for the entire fest: 25 featured bands plus all the quick guest performers - over 20 hours of live music goodness. All this for only $40 (individual showcase prices add up to $55.) Email or call me at crashdog3@yahoo.com or 209-543-5306 and get yours!

URBAN

Music Industry Scammers by Tru Luv Lopez

As much as there is an abundance of musicians and artists, there are scammers that walk along side of you like zombies in the Walking Dead series, waiting for the opportunity to strike. Do not be fooled. They come in the shape of mangers, producers, engineers and consultants. I am here to give you the upper hand in dealing with these types. How to avoid getting SCAMED! The BS-er: They will talk your ear off and sell you dreams. These people have never had any significant success in the music business. Name dropping is their game. Do your research and do a ”Back Ground Check”. Avoid at all cost. The ex-industry bigwig: These types used to work for major record labels and now turned consultants. They will offer to “get you to the next level” for a fee, but you have to ask yourself some

very important questions before you enter into any agreements with these people. Are their contacts still relevant or are they dated? When was their last significant credit – five, ten, twenty years ago? Do your research! The consultant that says they can move your music to right market. Beware. What are his sources? Where is your music shopped? These are the kind of questions you need to ask. If anyone is dropping names, do your research. Ask them about there previous business relationship with the persons you are dealing with. You will be surprised what you will find. There is no easy break. If it sounds to good to be true. Than it probably is. Body language is a dead give away. Nothing comes for free. Protect yourself, protect your music and protect your art.

FIT

tor away, it doesn’t say candy or soda a day keeps the doctor away. So think about what you are really putting in your body, choose to be strong”. Friends, below are a few upcoming fitness events for you and your family to enjoy. Get out, get moving and stay healthy.

The Future of Fitness by Efren Martinez

It wasn’t too long ago that this good-looking kid approached me with curiosity while I was DJ’ing a fitness event. In truth the curiosity went both ways. For Theo Miller it must have been the fact that I loved to race as much as I love to DJ. For me it was all about how this “kid” was able to run so darn fast. At age 11 Theo is a gifted runner with two exceptional parents to lead him by example. His parents Alan and Jan Marie Miller are very much into living a healthy lifestyle and are members of various fitness groups as well as regulars at their local gym. With that being said, it’s not hard to figure out why Theo is so active in fitness and prefers healthier treats when it comes to snacks. In fact Theo’s favorite snack food are green apples with peanut butter and when it comes to preparing the family meals he’s all about learning the nutritional value. Don’t get me wrong, Theo isn’t much different from any other 11 year old who likes soccer, football,

baseball and soon enough, girls. What sets Theo apart from most his age is his hunger for racing. According to Jan, Theo’s mom, he showed an interest in running while he was in preschool and by the age of 9 he entered in his first big boy foot race. Talk about going big or going home, his first race was a 10K! Since then he’s raced about 15 road races ranging from 5K to 10K’s. Last Spring he decide to give track a go and participated in nearly 20 races ranging from the 800, 1500 and 3,000. He has placed in every single age division road race he’s ever ran and kept knocking his own record books to the curb during last years track season. Outside of running, Theo keeps it well rounded with playing racquet ball with his dad, Alan, as well as enjoying kayaking and hiking with his family. When Theo isn’t laying down the miles, he also likes to lay down the beats, as in drum beats. According to his parents Theo can sit for hours

beating the skins on his drum set. He’s truly an amazing kid in and out of his running shoes and his parents have done well planting the seed of health for the rest of Theo’s future. I asked Theo, from one runner to another, what he enjoys the most about running. His reply was, “I like winning, feeling free, knowing that God gave me this ability to run. Running is a gift that I love”. Theo’s personal Modesto View fitness message. “Don’t let anybody tell you, you are too small, or not good enough, everyone can find what they are good at. May not happen right away, but for sure you will find what you are meant to do for fitness. Remember the saying, an apple a day keeps the doc-

BLUES

“Legendary Home of the Blues” by Big Earl Mathews

Modesto’s Poorhouse Millionaires will play the New Roxy theater this month in Clarksdale, Mississippi. Photo Courtesy Preservation in Mississippi.

Hello everyone I hope you are enjoying spring. The weather is great and the flowers are blooming. I love this time of year and I am even more excited for April this year because I am leaving on a road trip. My band the Poorhouse Millionaires and our friends the Ryan Russell Band are heading off for 11 days to Clarksdale, Mississippi, the “Legendary Home of the Blues.” Clarksdale’s Crossroads is said to be the place where Robert Johnson sold his soul for the ability to play the Blues. We are joining up with our friend from Oklahoma, Shilo Brown AKA Bloody Ol’ Mule and taking the Clarksdale, Mississippi Juke Joint Blues Festival by storm. On our way out we are stopping to play at Big’s in Huntington Beach, California with our friends the Harlis Sweetwater Band. Then we are headed back to Tempe, Arizona to Play the Yuka Tap Room for the second time. This will be followed by a onenight stopover on Oklahoma City, Okla-

homa to play at the Red Brick and join up with our brother in arms, Shilo. From there we head over to Eureka Springs, Arkansas to play at Chelsea’s Corner Cafe and then finally to Clarksdale. On Friday, April 11th we are playing at the New Roxy, which is an old theater without a roof. The rest of the time we will be busking and trying to see and hear as much as we can. I can’t even begin to tell you how happy I am to be doing this. I plan on taking lots of pictures and posting them to our FB page as we go along. Please feel free to head over to the Poorhouse Millionaires page and check it out. Later in the month, on April 25 I will be at The Barkin’ Dog with the Cryin’ Shame. As always folks thanks so much for all your love and support. This is going to be a great year and I look forward to to telling you all about some of the great things I have in store for the rest of this year next month.

ALL AGES Spring Break

by Leia Johnson

Spring Break is coming up and summer is right around the corner. Summer is about making lifelong memories, not about laying in bed watching TV all day. In 20 years are you going to remember that episode or are you going to remember giant games of hide and go seek and whipped cream fights? I go to camp most of the summer. I went to 4 sessions of Foothill Horizons Summer Camp last summer. I recommend this camp to anyone. I’ve met some of my best friends there. You stay up in the foothills for a week with a ton of fun counselors, group games, good music, and so many memories. I also love acting and singing. An acting camp that I love to go to is called Hutton’s Hamlet. The camp is a half a day for two weeks in Oakdale. I’ve made so many new friends, learned new songs, and gained a lot of confidence onstage. If you don’t like singing, you can sign up for a nonmusical week, I’ve done both and they are equally fun. I also take a 2 week writing course at CSUS Great Valley Writing Project. I know school during the summer doesn’t sound appealing. It’s nothing like that, we play writing games and learn writing techniques. If art is more your type then check out the Chartreuse Muse art summer camps. I’ve taken many and they are so much fun, I go home everyday having learned multiple new art

techniques. You can also take soccer courses with the AJAX program. When I was younger, I played AJAX and the coaches are super nice and supportive. Whatever your doing this summer, I hope that it includes tons of fun camps! Are you in high school? Do you enjoy meeting new people and traveling? If you answered yes to both of these questions then you have to opportunity to go out of the country to either Japan or France this summer on a Sister Cities Exchange. You get to stay in one of these places with a family and spend the days with your Modesto group. Then later in the summer, the child from that family will come and stay in Modesto and you get to show them all of the wonderful things about it here. If you are interested in this occasion then visit the Sister Cities website www.modestosistercities.com/youth-exchange.aspx. You must apply online before May 1, 2014. I hope you have a great month planning your summer.

GoDowntown Modesto Farmer’s Market is back! One of the best things about living in Modesto is the Modesto Certified Farmers Market. This is our great morning get togethers, featuring the freshest produce, cheese, killer bacon, tasty treats, flowers, bakery good and so much more. There is music weekly along with some great chef demonstrations. Best of all, the Thursday and Saturday markets are all starting together this year beginning April 6th and 8th. The market operates every Thurs and Sat from 7 am to 1 pm on 16th St between H and I. The ViewCrew looks forward to seeing you there. Modesto BunnyCon is Hopping Our Way! April 11 at 7pm at Firkin and Fox This will be one of the most fun events in April! April Bunnies will be BarHopping to a new location about every half hour and a special itinerary will be posted on the Santa Con Facebook closer to BunnyCon date. Here is the basic BUNNY HOP plan: 1. Dress up - add something to your bunny ears for more interesting appeal. 2. Be sexy (like we need to tell you that). 3. Be happy - the Easter Bunny is always happy. 4. Bring cash for the bartenders, tip well. 5. Don’t be THAT Bunny - you know who we mean. 6. No Bunny left behind - look out for each other. And remember... what one Bunny can’t get away with, MANY can, so make sure you all hop together. Be sure to check out Daydreams and Nightmares in their new downtown location at 417 7th St for the best in Bunny attire. Modesto BunnyCon 2014 is brought to you by the same infamous ne’er-do-wells as Modesto SantaCon.
