Everything is so fun, hitting the bike trails, the patios of the restaurants are perfect, the evenings are long and the farmer’s markets are open. The tastes, smells and sounds are just fresher than fresh. This is our community and we are surrounded by friends. Modesto has a special sense of dedication and cooperation. We keep hearing that we are at the bottom of these national lists, but I dare say that we are on the top of many other lists, like volunteerism, teamwork, community outreach, performing arts, music, art and one of my favorites, locally grown food. Yes, friends, it is this spirit that makes it special to live and work here. It is this spirit that we are attracting our next generation to live here and those that grew up here are making the decision to return. It is our mission, let’s create a city where the next generation has opportunity and can shine. April brings us Love Modesto and in this spirit of community action, we are highlighting the many ways we can volunteer and lend a hand. As you can see in our interview with Love Modesto founder Jeff Pishney, we need to make sure that we lend a hand all year long and we encourage you to join us on April 23 in downtown to see many of the amazing things you can do. Volunteering is easy and it can be fun. It is not just litter clean ups, but there is something for everyone here in Modesto. This is what makes different and event better than many cities. We have a new community section in ModestoView.com where we will regularly update you on things we can do together. We are the change. It is up to us to make a difference. We can do it. I love to travel, and the best part about travelling is bringing cool ideas back to Modesto.

I am working hard as part of the Downtown Partnership Team to make a downtown where we can all gather can enjoy being Modestans. The most important thing that I bring back is we need to celebrate who we are. The wining cities are creative and celebrate their culture. That is what people want to see when they travel. We need a vibrant downtown, but we should not try to be downtown Walnut Creek or Livermore. We need to be “Downtown Modesto”. We have a rich history as the “Birthplace of Rockabilly” in 1938, the “Home of American Graffiti” and classic cars, and an agricultural base that is the envy of the world. This is who we are, and this is what our brand should be. We are a classic American City and we have a powerful identity and we need to make this part of our marketing efforts for not only our own residents, but to people around the world. Let’s be who we are and tell the

world about it. These are just some of the things that make me really proud to be a Modestan. We have an exciting history, amazing friends and neighbors, an ag economy that will power us into the future and a story that will attract the next generation. Let’s reach out this month and really lend a hand to each other and our community. It will be an exciting time. Thank you all for reading and thanks for being ModestoView friends.

The Modesto Sunset Leo Club is an officially chartered club of Lions Clubs International. There are over 6,500 Leo’s Clubs in more than 150 nations throughout the world. LEO stands for Leadership, Experience and Opportunity. The goal of the Leo Club is to provide young people with the opportunity for development and contribution, individually and collectively, as part of the community. Community service is the cornerstone foundation of the Leo program, training kids to make a lifetime commitment to helping others. The Modesto Sunset Leo club meets once a month and tries to do a community service project every other month. Some of the projects the Leo’s have done are: serving Christmas dinner at the Howard Training Center, volunteering at the Gospel Mission, buying and filling backpacks for students at Shackelford, organizing a pajama drive for Sierra Vista children’s center, working at “Parker’s Prom” at Madera Children’s Hospital, running a booth at Earth Day and inspecting and cleaning thousands of donated eyeglasses to be given to those in need - just to name a few. They are always looking for great projects to help out the community. STREET Our StreetView this month will be from the garden perspective. Every year, Modesto Garden Club hosts the Annual Garden Tour. This month, the event will be focused in the College area with 6 homes on display. These homes are chosen for their artistry, creativity, conservation and creative use of techniques. You can purchase tix and a map for the Modesto Garden Club tour online or at the Garden Club Office at 622 14th St. The Garden Club is involved in many activities and has gardens they maintain all over the city. It was so much fun and food fans were following the film crew all over town and the chase was part of the game. A couple of our local places were the stars of the show. Bauers 66 1Ž2 Skillet and Grill, The Food Fix Truck, and Commonwealth GastroPub were the filming locations. The ViewCrew presented Guy with a copy of ModestoView and gave him a Modesto Graffiti USA cup and shotglass. Now it is time to watch the shows. Bauers 66 1Ž2 and the Food Fix truck are the first episodes. The Commonwealth episode does not have a date yet. Here are the dates and times on the Food Network.

This is one of the longest running rodeos on the west coast. Live from the Cowboy Capitol of Oakdale, the festivities start early the week of April 5 and get crazier as it leads up to the weekend finals. By Maryann Spikes Meet one of Modesto’s great neighbors, David Lambert, leader of the Modesto chapter of the Guardian Angels (GAs) and the Facebook-born group, Homelessness & Poverty in Stanislaus. We met for the first time at the most recent Focus on Prevention meeting geared to neighborhood leaders. Then his Facebook group had our first meeting at Ralston’s Goat, the location of the new iconic Rick Hernstedt mural at 10th and J. David is about empowerment. “Citizen involvement is the backbone of secure communities. The GAs are a unique organization; we prevent crime, but we are basically a community service and empowerment organization” says David. “I’ve admired the GAs since the early 80s, because this is my core belief: The job of making our cities better belongs to the people, and it’s the citizen’s obligation to recognize his or her membership in something bigger

than the individual” he continues. The Modesto Guardian Angels get a lot of welcome honk-and-waves and people thanking them while they coordinate with MPD out on neighborhood safety patrols. They recently provided extra security at the Snoop Dogg concert at the Fat Cat, and teamed up with the Stockton chapter to assist with their third annual Valentine’s block party. David thinks that society needs to reconnect “Everything that society seems to have forgotten is embodied in the GAs - duty, service, honor, virtue... I’ve always thought if I had the chance, I would join. If you’d asked me a couple years ago, I’d have

said I’m too old” he continues. “However, I saw some GAs at last year’s Love Modesto event and started a conversation. That’s how I got involved. I became friends with the Western Regional Director from Stockton, Sean Rodgers, whom I consider a good man and a mentor.” David was rapidly promoted to a leadership position. This spring, the GAs will be working on putting together an anti-bullying presentation for schools, increasing homeless engagement, and recruiting for effective safety patrols. March does take off with a bang this month. “Young at Art,” the annual student show opens at Mistlin Gallery, with a run to March 19, where it finishes with an artist reception and Awards Ceremony at 2:30 pm. Student art featured in several age categories and media, from preschool to High School. Open Studio maps are available March 1, at Mistlin Gallery, Carnegie Arts Center, Chartreuse Muse, The Artist Loft, Crow Trading, Oakdale Chamber of Commerce, Modesto Convention and Visitors Bureau. Maps are $10, and Students 18 and under get in FREE with a map holder. Stanislaus Artist Open Studio now has 81 artists, at 43 locations. This Lynn Darpinian year the raffle drawing for the 6 $200 gift certificates, good to spend at one of the studios of your choice on the tour, will be done by Art Walk Night in April, in advance of the tour, with time to plan your trip. More information on that next month.

receiving date. March 4 is the announcement of acceptance, and the show will open at both the Mistlin Gallery and Carnegie Arts Center April 1 to May 27. Art Walk maps change this month, with a new listing of venues featuring local artists listed for the Downtown Modesto Third Thursday. The map will be good until September. Some changes being floated for Art Walk, and patrons and artists might want to weigh in with some suggestions. Our every month schedule is one of the few art communities that put and art walk on, but the frequency of our monthly get out downtown event might change. An “Art Alley” designed by Chris Murphy is proposed from J Street down to the Chartreuse Muse, that may include more murals to those walls, and pop up opportunities for artists to expand opportunities to show. As yet to be organized, including how to apply, fees if any, etc. This has been interactive event for over a decade, so if a fan of art walk, patron, participating artist, get some feedback into the project. one this art walk by Preservation Coffee. Evan, with hand crafted crystal and mineral pieces for healing crystal art. Always check out our downtown venues off the map, for the local artists, poets, musicians they may have on hand, during the monthly Third Thursday Outing. The “Art of Justice” art show and fundraiser for the Stanislaus Family Justice Center returns for another great show, where local artists are paired with the works of the centers younger student artists with a theme or message, to produce and inspired work of art donated to the fundraising effort. My pick this year involves the exercise of “The Monster in Me” with “hecka colors, hecka legs. Show will be staged at the Center on I Street, March 23. Wine Tasting Fun

Any local wine drinker is familiar with Modesto’s own Gallo, and most have also been to Lodi and Murphy’s for all the wine tasting adventures found there. While I’m a fan of “Sip, Savor Lodi”, I’m here to tell you that you no longer have to drive to another county to get great wine. Hidden in the back of McHenry Village is a great little store call Stewart & Jasper. When you walk in, you become surrounded by bottles of all varietals and types of wine. It is a mini vino paradise in the heart of our city. What makes this store unique is definitely the wine bar in the back corner. They are serving up wine tastings Monday through Saturday, and the offerings change frequently. Every three weeks the tasting menu changes, and the flight special changes (you guessed it) weekly. There are so many different wines to try, you really want to come in frequently and find a new favorite. This isn’t a typical bar atmosphere, it’s relaxed, with soft couches and dusk lighting, so you can easily escape an overwhelming day. They also serve beer, including some local favorites such as Dust Bowl & Stone, for the beer drinkers who accompany their buddies for a taste. We attended the Textbook Vineyards tasting, which included a flight of four 2 ounce pours for only $10. The four wines were very tasty! The Merlot took the cake, and the Chardonnay came in a close second. During the tasting, you can walk around the store and sample their treats like cheese smothered in Apricot Pepper sauce, Sun Dried Tomato Almonds, or their addicting Butter Toffee Nuggets. The diversity of their selection will astound you. Though their wines are mostly Californian, they do have a small amount of imports to round out their

medley of varietals. One of the special wines on rotation to taste was the Jeremy Wine Co. Chocolate Port, which by far was my favorite of the evening. I bought a bottle to bring home with me because it is an absolutely divine dessert wine! After enjoying the tasting Brandilyn went back to meet with Retail Sales Manager Brittney Mitich, and get the 411 on this perfect little wine bar. MV: What makes Stewart & Jasper unique? BM: Our wine bar is the perfect complement to our nuts. We offer something you can’t find anywhere else. Our almond growers are local to this area and we want to support them in their communities. Modesto and Patterson were locations that just made sense. McHenry Village matches our style. Here you can get a gift basket with great tasting almonds from local farmers, AND you can pair it with a bottle of wine you hand-picked! MV: What is your favorite wine? BM: Opolo Vineyards, Mountain Zinfandel, from Paso Robles. MV: Beatles or Stones? BM: Both! I grew up with both.

PERFORMANCE A Time to Perform in April by Kaye Osborn Spring has sprung! Many high school drama productions are over. They will reconvene next fall. Tis the season for musical and dance recitals. We certainly are fortunate to live in an area that has numerous artistic offerings. Sometimes, I wish I could clone myself so I can attend everything. Live performances are such a unique experience for each audience. The performers bring their energy to the house and the audience gives their energy to the performers. It is exhilarating! It is memorable! It is thrilling! Imagine you are in a spot light, singing a solo when your pianist’s light unexpectedly turns off! What would you do? Well, this happened during our musical of Sleepy Hollow. The young performer professionally waited quietly for the light to be fixed. Very impressive! The appreciative crowd applauded and the show continued. Next month, I will be showcasing the Central

Giddy Up at Rivi’s! I can finally believe the great buzz I keep hearing about Oakdale’s Rivi’s. It’s not a chuck wagon, and you won’t find calf head soup or red flannel hash on the menu, but you will be able to satisfy your hearty appetite and your taste buds will have a new flavor addiction! As an Oakdale resident I couldn’t be more delighted by welcoming Rivi’s to Oakdale as it is a one of a kind place purposely designed by owners Amy and Paul Rivera to not shadow other small business owners out of respect and a true sense of a shared community. That’s just so nice! I asked Paul what inspired him to open Rivi’s in Oct. 2105; “I had to give Amy something for our 10 year anniversary!” Thank you for raising the bar for all the husbands! From the outside of Rivi’s my first impression was, it’s so quaint. Soon as I walked through the door my eyes had so much more too view. I love this place! From the warm tones throughout to the Tuscany vibe I immediately picked up on in the front wine bar. I found myself exploring further down the corridor where I found more casual seating & an open kitchen. Nothing to hide when it comes to what’s going in my mouth is even better. I continued down a bit further & on the left was a swanky lil’ cozy parlor with antique furniture where I could have an intimate private gathering. While at the end of the corridor I see flames that lure me in to a gorgeous and spacious patio with a stunning glass fire pit and outdoor heaters. Are you sure I’m still in Oakdale?! Chef Travis Chavez impressed me with his red roasted peppers hummus & pita bread. Then came the ground lamb shepherd’s pie full of tasty flavors. Oh yeah I’m thinking I may redefine “cow” girl! I love people and this is the main reason I’m a bartender. It has nothing to do with the party life or the life of a bartender. I love to talk to people. I feel kind of like a psychiatrist. Bartending is really fun, and I like to try to guess what it is they might want. You can kind of get a flavor of what people are like. Sometimes I am right, sometimes I am wrong but if I have seen you once, I will never forget your drink. I like making all of the traditional drinks. One night, I had a man who was about 90 come in and order an Old Fashioned, and he was skeptical that I could make the proper drink. He said “I’m having one and done”. So I went on my way and I looked over and the drink was gone. So he asked me for another one. I was so proud that he liked that drink. He had four of them. Made my night. I love to make vodka drinks and that is my go to drink. If someone asks me to “make them something”, I will lead with a vodka drink. One of the strangest drinks I ever made was a Vodka and Campari, and I wondered why would anyone want to do that. I made it and he loved it. But one of my favorite things to make is the Boardroom Kitty. I tell them to be very careful as they are really good and they taste like a Starburst. Recipe is a secret, but I make a lot of them. I love what I do and when you come here, you never have an unhappy Maddy. I love to be around people and the Boardroom is a great place to be. by Aaron Rowan Picking up right where last month left off (take a moment to read back through the March edition of Unplugged View if you have it lying about somewhere), the Modesto Unplugged Music Festival’s fifth anniversary celebration continues through the second half of April. Saturday 4/16, we’ll have an intimate evening with our local country-rock ambassador Patty Castillo Davis, winner of the Modesto Area Music Award for best singer-songwriter. Her thoughtful, definitive songwriting has given this award winner credibility and acceptance by the Los Angeles and Nashville music publishing communities. This sweet vocalist even sang for the Pope once. Look for some special guests at this showcase, at the Gottschalk Music Center, 133 Burney St. (in their recital room - entrance at 1502 E St.) starting at 6:30. $10 admission at the door. The next day, Sunday afternoon 4/17, we have another MUMF partner event, presented by the Modesto Community Concert Association. Two-time Juno-winning banjoist Jayme Stone and his band the Lomax Project make music inspired by folk traditions from around the world. His latest album, Room of Wonders, explores music from Norway, Sweden, Bulgaria, Brazil, Italy and North America. They will be performing at the Gallo Center at 3 PM. Tickets range from $15-$30. Sunday evening 4/24, we have the privilege of hosting a wonderful keyboardist/singer named Victoria Theodore, also happening at the Gottschalk Music Center’s recital room. Victoria was a member of Stevie Wonder’s touring band for 6 years, and a regular performer on the Arsenio Hall Show. On her debut solo album ‘Grateful’, she delivers a beautiful blend of jazz, pop and R&B, reflecting her training as a classical pianist. Also performing is the Jimmy Grant Ensemble, with a repertoire of acoustic gypsy jazz, laced with influences of Russian folk, bluegrass, Celtic and classical music. Marie is a veteran orchestral performer who plays just about every symphony instrument there is. She and her players are certain to deliver the most dynamic ending our festival has ever had. You’ve seen him at the red light on the corner of Heartbreak & Despair, plucking his guitar, a B.B. King riff buzzing around your closed window like a wasp you want to keep out. His guitar case is wide open like a screaming mouth, nickels inside like shiny teeth, you wonder how long he can keep playing on these cold nights, but you have never asked. You’re light is green. Your home is waiting for you. How human can we really be if we don’t use our ears to listen to the blues that play on the corners of so many streets? Ubuntu: A person is a person through other persons. We are dominoes, falling around the world like a roller coaster, and we fight against those who push us down instead of reaching out to those who’ve already fallen.

You can try to float or fly away in your private jet, but even airplanes come down eventually, on runways or engulfed in flames. III. Count your fingers like blessings: We are lucky to have hands to hold our Gucci purses, our money in a fist so tight a crowbar couldn’t pry our fingers apart. But these are the same hands that can pull a man onto his feet or hug a boy who has lost his father. These are the palms that are raised in class. The world is full of questions, and we need teachers to answer them. We are interconnected, and knowledge is the only shackle that can’t be unbroken, but when you cut education, every student bleeds. Ubuntu: A person is a person through other persons. So your choice is simple: Be there for someone or let someone be there for you. If you choose solitude, you choose death, and we are already dying without you. Instead, lift us up. Turn over every stone, every couch cushion. Do not give up until you find hope, and then deliver it to the hopeless, one ray of light, one handful of love at a time.

Love Modesto began in 2007 when local pastor Jeff Pishney wondered why Modesto was always listed in the “worst cities lists”. Most importantly, what could he, his church community and the city at large to together to change the trajectory for good. Could his mission succeed? Yes, it has, not only has this succeeded locally, it has spread across the USA with www. LoveOurCities.org. I am sure you have seen the “Heart Modesto” bumperstickers all over, but wondered what this was all about. Love Modesto has succeeded because it is allinclusive, reaches across communities, genders and religions affiliations. The projects are sustainable and the magic in this event is that it makes it easy and accessible for people to get involved, and more importantly stay involved. ModestoView has been a proud supporter of Love Modesto for many years and will be again this year. Last year he launched a brand new 501(c)3 called “Love Our Cities.” Over 14,000 people turned out in the Spring of 2015 to Love Our Cities events across the State of California, including more than 4,000 people in Modesto. Volunteers and sponsor partners hosted over 90 projects and donated around 15,000 volunteer hours, representing nearly $350,000 worth of volunteer time. The City of Modesto proclaimed April Love Modesto Month and presented Jeff with a certificate at the March 29 council meeting. How did this happen and what can we do to get involved? Let’s meet Iowa native, now Modesto champion, Jeff Pishney ModestoView: When did you move here? Jeff Pishney: I was born and raised in Iowa, went to college and graduate school in Virginia and then came out to Modesto in 1995 to become an intern at Big Valley Grace Community Church. I was only planning on being here for a year or so, but I continued to be at Big Valley for nearly 20 years in different roles and most importantly, I met my wife here, so this is home!

MV: What was your real day job at Big Valley? JP: When I was at Big Valley, I started as an intern then I was able to lead the college group and see the group grow from just a few young people to hundreds. They inspired me to reach out more in our community and to take this vision to the rest of our church. I eventually transitioned to leading our church’s outreach efforts which eventually started Love Modesto. MV: What made you snap and say I am going to change our city? JP: I got so tired of seeing Modesto on these worst city lists and hearing the negativity from different people about our city. I started thinking and asking the question, “If my church were to suddenly disappear from Modesto, would anyone even care or notice?”. I don’t think we had a lot of good answers back then. At the same time, many of our friends were moving away and so excited to get out of here. It was discouraging. I knew if I was going to stay living here, I needed a renewed passion and love for my city. I love the quote by Mahatma Ghandi “Be the change that you wish to see in the world”. I wanted to be the change I wished to see in Modesto.

MV: You grew up in Iowa, do you think there a similarities to the Modesto area? JP: I grew up in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. This is a city of similar size of Modesto and a similar economy with agriculture playing a big role. There are some similarities, but there are also many differences that I appreciate. MV: How did you find Modesto? JP: I hadn’t heard of Modesto until a friend of mine in college came out here to work at Big Valley. He told me about an intern position and thought it would be a great fit for me. MV: To get people involved, volunteering needs to be simple and easy was that a conscious decision you made with Love Modesto? JP: It sure was. I know making it easy to get involved is a big part of our success. We wanted to make it simple for every person who wants to be involved including families with small children, people with disabilities, businesses, congregations, etc. MV: Who came up with “Love Modesto” theme? JP: This theme was birthed out of a reaction of

a sad slogan I heard from some college students - “Modesto Sucks”. What if we turned this completely around? It was certainly not original, but myself and others had this idea of “I Love Modesto” and putting this slogan on t-shirts and decals to give these out. Around that time I also came across an initiative in Portland, Oregon called “Love Portland”. I knew “Love Modesto” was the name. MV: What is one of the results of Love Modesto that has fulfilled you the most? JP: There are so many, but one that fulfills me so much is hearing about the high percentage of people who continue to volunteer and have pride in our city. The volunteer day is just a catalyst to spur people on to continual involvement in our city, neighborhoods and schools. MV: Other cities were so excited, what made you “go national”? JP: I was handing out Love Modesto signs to people and this couple came up to me saying that they did not want to put a Love Modesto sign in their yard because they live in Ceres. They told me that if we came up with a Love Ceres sign, they’d be happy to put up a sign in their yard. I asked them if they would lead Love Ceres and they said yes! Since then, the word has spread and we have talked with and have helped over 100 other cities … with dreams of helping thousands of cities all over the world. MV: If you had a magic wand and unlimited budget, what change would you make in Modesto? JP: I want to see as many people as possible in our community reaching out and caring for others. This is really what Love Modesto is all about - loving our city year round and not just one day a year. What if everyone knew and looked out for their neighbors? What if our schools were amazed by the number of people wanting to volunteer? What if our city became know for the overwhelming amount of loving foster families and known for how hard we work at keeping families together in the first

But fundamentally, we as a community need to look out for each other, we like to make a difference in things that we re passionate about. Volunteering means so many things. It is not all hard work, litter clean ups or hard labor, it can be volunteering at a museum, doing art with kids, being a girl scout leader, reading in a classroom, or making a donation to a non-profit or serving on their boards. Lonny Davis is a champion for those that need wheelchairs. This is a project in developing countries that matches the needs of the disabled with the technology of a wheelchair. Mobility can literally save and change lives. Volunteers travel to countries like Ecuador, Guatemala, Peru, Honduras and this year to Vietnam to fit each child to a chair. 100% of all funds to Hope Haven go directly to programs. Volunteering can be creative and fun. Peer Recovery’s goal is to end stigma, revitalize downtown areas, while implementing strategies for an all-inclusive and therefor healthier community. Peer Recovery presents the Arts for Freedom program and allows mental health and people in recovery a guided path to being a contributing part of our community. Be a friend, listen, pray and make someone’s day (carnations will be given to each person we meet). Led by Ann Black. Team Chemo Crew The Chemo Crew’s mission is to offer hope and help to local cancer patients and their families. We do this in many ways, but one of the most effective ways is with our chemo kits. We will be putting together our Chemo Kits and prepping materials that will be put in our kits, making encouragement cards to go in the kits, and binding booklets that go in the kits. METAL Two Voices Lost Too Soon by Mike Vanek I had originally planned to write this 2 months ago to pay tribute to a friend of ours and then something horrible happened, we lost one of the singers from one of the biggest bands in town. This month we pay tribute to 2 voices. Two voices that helped shape the scene. Two totally different people from two different eras but still two brothers gone way too soon!! Rest in peace Mycal Wayte of Burial Ground and Joe Young of 17ten. Mycal Wayte is one of the forfathers of the 209 Metal scene, Mycal Wayte fronted one of the greatest bands in the Nor Cal metal scene Burial Ground until eventually being replaced by Chris Todd. Mycal was crazy as a loon and one of the most supportive people you would ever meet. He was a lover of good metal and I had many after-midnight online conversations with him over the past few years. Burial Ground was one of the first valley bands to branch out to the Bay Area. Beyond being a legendary central

valley metal institution for years and Mycal was a legendary voice that fronted it for years. When he passed, all his band mates paid tribute to him even though the band had been broken up on and off again for years and he had been out of the band for years. They came together as a family and banded together for their fallen brother! The guys from Burial Ground (Andy, Brett, Cory and Chris) all have been really low-key about it but have paid tributes online in their own way. April 29th there will be a memorial show for Mycal at the Other Place and it is a FREE show that will feature a Burial Ground tribute set. Joe Young was a huge personality that lit up the life of everyone he touched. A vet of the local rap scene known as Hard Knox, Joe spent

the last few years on and off with the Modesto based metal band 17Ten. 17Ten became one of our area’s most successful bands not only on stage but off as well! The term Pü Metal has become a household terminology in our scene and the color orange has become synonymous with the band as well. They’ve incorporated it in everything they do, merch, on stage clothes and masks, all honing the orange with a captive energy unmatched by other bands. Whether In front of 3 people 100 or Joe and KC made you feel as if they were there to play just for you with they’re captivating hip hop/Metal style. I wish my brothers in 17Ten

the absolute very best moving forward after this horrible tragedy. Two days before writing this column there was a memorial show that lasted all day and night. We jammed almost 300 people in The Other Place and had the craziest show ever dedicated to Mighty Joe Young. People from all musical worlds came together including 6 metal bands and we paid tribute the best way we know how!! With music and friend & family!! We will miss both of these local musical giants. Until next Month, Keep one foot in the gutter and one fist in the gold!!!!

MAMA April Fools by Middagh Goodwin Love Modesto; Spring is in the air. Winter is officially over, and sure we are getting some much needed rain, but we are also getting warmer days and nights. Show your love for our own homegrown talent by going out to see them perform, not just here at home but when they play on the road. Nothing But Losers, our two time MAMAmetal winners and Modesto’s most hated (or loved) have some big shows outside the confines of the 209 and we are thrilled. Catch NBL in Fresno on the 1st at Fulton 55 opening up for Nekrogoblikon and Psychostick and again at the NorCal Tattoo and Music Festival on the 9th at Cal Expo in Sacramento. These guys are showing what it is all about to be more than just a local band. Grease Hound will be performing their brand of Rockabilly at the opening of the Mexabilly Clothing Store in San Jose on the 3rd and will

be at it again in Merced at the Hangar BBQ on the 9th. Keeping the sounds of Modesto alive all over Northern California. I’m always excited when I see one of our local bands play the legendary 924; Gilman and the Dream Supreme will be doing just that on the 3rd. They have a great sound and would love to see a caravan come out to see them play in Berkeley. Cottonwood Creek just played the Gallo Center and they have tons of shows all over the area in the next few months. Catch them at Black Oak Casino on the 7th and also at the Asparagus Festival in Stockton on the 16th. Killah Wail will be up in Stockton on the 17th at McKinley Community Center for a fundraiser for the Peace & Dignity Journeys. My dogs, whose time clock’s are guided by their stomachs however, are still on standard time and an hour early sit prostrate on the floor looking at empty bowls and then pace as if starving. But it is nice to not get up in the dark and have the sunlight grace you at the end of day when the 5 o’clock bell tolls. Plenty to do in the downtown with music and the arts in store so get out and check out the scene! BLUES Ready For Spring by Earl Matthews It’s April and things are picking up, folks. I don’t know about you, but I am ready for it. I have some exciting news for you: I have rejoined forces with my old partner in crime Ray Vazira and all this month, we are again playing shows as the “Poorhouse Millionaires”. Along with our other band members Eli Lester and Nathan Ignacio, we will be out and about and working on a new cd. I am so happy to be back in this project and playing music with these fellas again! I hope you can make it out and see all the new songs we have in store for you. Starting things off this month: Big Earl and the Cryin’ Shame will be at the TIlted Turtle on the 1st. If you haven’t made it in to see the remodel and meet the new staff yet, now is your chance. On the 2nd Shane Dwight will be up at Black Oak Casino. Shane puts on a great show and if you love guitar this is one to see. On the 3rd Jeramy Norris and the Dangerous

Mood will be out in Isleton on Moore’s Riverboat at 1pm for a Sunday Funday party. Jeramy and his band are one of the hardest working blues bands in the valley and have been for years. Jeramy knows about a million songs and always shows up with a smile ready to make it a party. weekend of music. Friday the 29th the Poorhouse Millionaires are playing Music on the Plaza next to Fuzio in the 10th Street Plaza in downtown Modesto. Then on Saturday the 29th at Black Oak Casino The Zydeco Flames are ready to make you move your feet. If you are unfamiliar with Zydeco music, it’s as spicy as its Cajun roots. Take the spirit of the bayou and mix it with accordion, washboard, fiddle, guitar and a big ol’ smile and you have the gumbo that is zydeco music. To finish out this month of blues music Bob Hope theater welcomes Joe Bonamassa to their stage. Joe has been playing guitar since he was 4 years old, he has played with everyone from BB King to Eric Clapton and has a Grammy nomination too. He is one of the biggest stars in the Blues world today and you can still get tickets, pretty cool. Well, thanks everyone. Congratulations to those who completed your Surgical Artistry Modesto Marathon! Now looking back, you may remember early on when you ran all those countless miles to build up your distance and endurance. You’ve ran in the cold rain, and in the heat along with aches and pains, but you sure muscled through them. At times your house might have been a mess and your laundry might have piled up to the ceiling, because your only focus was to finish what you started, The Surgical Artistry Modesto Marathon. Again, congratulations! I’m so proud of all of you. But wait! The journey is not over, it’s just begun. As a fitness guru, I’ve never settled for just one fitness accomplishment only to go back to being an arm-chair athlete. Let me reinforce this train of thought; prior to your marathon you spent months training your mind, body, and soul. Through those training months you’ve not only learned how to eat healthier, but you also learned how to discipline yourself through your accomplishments.

As you may know, I had a life changing summer last year. The greatest experience was the opportunity to be a youth ambassador on the exchange to one the Modesto Sister Cities International (MSCI) sister cities. This volunteer organization began in 1983 in Modesto. Over the last 33 years , Modesto has made friendship agreements with 8 cities - Vernon , Canada; Khmelnitskiy, Ukraine; Kurume, Japan; Vijayawada, India; Aguascalientes, Mexico and as well as Laval, France. As part of these agreements, there have been cultural exchanges with professionals (teachers, doctors and public service members) and students. Each summer there is an opportunity to go on one of two exchanges with MSCI. The first one is to Kurume, Japan for high school students. This exchange is going on its 24th year. I was selected as a youth representative to travel to Kurume. Last year they did everything to make sure we had the best experience . This was good because some of the students on the trip had never been out of the country. The only cost is airfare this can run about $1,500-$2,000. Though this may seem like a lot of money, these 10 days abroad cost less than my 4-day eighth grade trip. Once we were in Japan, the rest of the trip, besides spending money, was covered by the Japanese government as we were considered cultural guests of their country. They arranged wonderful itinerary with excursions and meals, as well as a bullet train ride and overnights in Kyoto and Nara. The best part, though, was staying with my host family . Momoka and her family went out of her way to make my trip special. I spent the whole time thinking about all the places I wanted to show her when she came to stay with me - Columbia, Yosemite, and Santa Cruz. When Momoka came to Modesto, she too was on a program, she and the group, which totals 10-15, come and get to see Modesto and Northern California and were able to take her places during the weekend. The tentative dates for this year’s program are July 21st - August 2nd in Japan and August 6-17th in Modesto. This exchange is a longer trip - June 11th through July 2nd. You just need airfare and spending money. You stay with host families who will share their city and surrounding area with you. You do not need to speak French to apply, though it would be fun to learn for the exchange. It is a reciprocal exchange, so you will host the student of the family for three weeks after your return. This exchange does not have a daily itinerary, so you become immersed in French culture. If you are not able to travel to France this year there is an opportunity to bring France to you. This year there are 5 students - 3 girls and 2 boys from Laval coming to Modesto July 2nd through 23rd. The ages range from 14-17 years old. They all speak English and love to travel. They are looking for host families that can share an American experience. This would be a great opportunity to make new friends and give you a greater appreciation for your hometown. This too is a long standing exchange. In fact, my mother participated and hosted when she was a freshman in college. Years later she became a volunteer for the organization because it was such a great experience. I really recommend this program to any young excited travelers. This is the safest and cheapest trip possible for someone still in (or just getting out of) high school. offers this definition: “The state of being calm, peaceful and untroubled, ‘an oasis of serenity amidst the bustling city’.” The goal of meditation is to reach a state of serenity that is when your mind is still and calm. Most of us are not comfortable with that feeling. Our culture discourages us being still. The number of things I get can get done too often becomes a measurement of my self esteem for that day. Occupation becomes a compulsion and a tool against my inner monologue, keeping me safe from my own negativity. However if I lose my cool, make mistakes, end up cranky, tired and tense I know it’s time for some serenity. I know there is a more serene and peaceful approach to all my activities which would make my life a lot better. But how to switch gears? How does one step into serenity? It starts with a willingness to seek an activity that helps slow down the runaway train of your mind. Put problems and emotions aside. Trust that this would work. Let go off expectations and anxieties, release bias, prejudice, and expectation. Because I practice T’ai Chi,

what works for me is to do a simple movement over and over. After doing it for a few minutes I find myself becoming more tranquil. My breathing sinks deeper into my body. I become interested in the tiny sensations, the flowing of blood and oxygen, the tingling in my fingers. I reconnect with my anatomy, my living apparatus. I may notice some thoughts but I can ignore them if I chose too. And it is in doing this that I regain a sense of power and focus. I realize I am the captain of my reality. It’s really all up to me, in my mind I can stand for peace and possibility. Focusing just on one single thing is the ticket. Forgetting the past and the future, being only in the moment. Keeping out all distractions. This focus is giving me a deep sense of belonging, reconnecting to my inner self and feeling part of my environment. It’s a mental practice, the one repeating motion becomes my meditation. Whatever you love and devote yourself to, whether taking a walk in nature, playing music, making art, cooking, sewing or gardening, these can all be stepping stones into serenity. “Collecting the Echoes”

Center Stage Conservatory’s Lower Level Studio at 948 11th Street, Modesto 8:00p.m. on April 15th, 16th, 22nd, 23rd, 28th, 29th, and 30th 2:00p.m. on April 24th & May 1st. Tickets are $15 general admission and $10 for students. Briana Hammerstrom, Summer Krafft, Nandi Mathews, and Melchor Sahagun III are the writing team that created the script for “Collecting the Echoes,” a story of a collision of fates between six people who all have one person, and one unifying event, in common. The piece will include traditional theatrical scenes, spoken word, and dance. It will be directed by Traci Sprague and choreographed by Kianna Whitten. Earth Day in the Park Graceada Park – 10 am – 4 pm Let’s keep this earth alive as it is the only one we have.
