It’s baseball season friends. I’m not really the kind of baseball fan that tracks the stats and watches all of the games, but I love the idea of the sport, the ballpark, that people still listen with a transistor radio with an earphone, the 7th inning stretch, peanuts & crackerjack and the tastes of all of the ballpark food. Baseball is so much more than a game, it’s an experience. You can chit chat, daydream and just soak it in and let yourself go for 9, 10, or maybe 11 or more innings. The best of baseball is local ball, our own Modesto Nuts (still think they should have been the “Cruisers”) is where the fun of baseball is. I know so many people who grew up in and around John Thurman field. When my father in law, Mike was a kid, he used to clean up the stands after the games in exchange for hot dogs and a soda. So this month, we take you back to the days when it began to help you usher in baseball, and out of respect, we explore the local world of hot dogs for our ChefView. Let’s play ball!

It is so very exciting that our locally produced magazine with a mission to “Serve Civic Pride Daily” took top national honors. Modesto has it going on this year. We were so fortunate to have one of our own in the Winter Olympics in South Korea and we are lucky to have an interview with Kendall Wesenberg as she shares her experiences about the games and her hopes for the future. Our friend Effie Passero (formerly Francesca Bavarro) has been killing it on American Idol and we hope to stay with her as she climbs to the top. There are a couple of things that are close to my heart, one of them is my heart. It has been an interesting couple of months as I worked through my heart issues and with my RF Ablation last month, things are working good and thank you all for the warm wishes and positive vibes. But that doesn’t mean I can stop being careful and being heart smart. I am serving as the Chair of the American Heart Association Leadership Team and we are working to raise funds for heart related research and care. Please plan on supporting the Go Red for Women Luncheon on May 4 and the Walk for Heart in September. Email me for more info. The other thing close to my heart, especially as a husband and parent of daughters, is the treatment of women and putting a stop to domestic violence. This is why we are going to Walk a Mile in Her Shoes on April 28 to raise money for Haven Women’s Center. My community is close to my heart as well, and as we celebrate our hometown events and activities, behind each and everyone of them is some one or a local business dedicated to making our community better. NON PROFIT Community Hospice Presents Before I Die Wall By Middagh Goodwin Stanislaus and San Joaquin County will be celebrating National Healthcare Decisions Day, April 16. 2018, by helping to promote positive conversation about death and dying in our community. Community Hospice will be hosting a “Before I Die Wall” to help friends and neighbors think about the important things in their lives.The wall will challenge people to think about relationships with death and each other hoping to help put their lives in perspective and lead them to be more proactive when it comes to end-of-life care decisions. Before I Die is a global art project originally created by artist Candy Chang on an abandoned house in New Orleans after she lost someone she loved. “Before I Die Walls” can be found all over the globe. Over 2,000 walls have been created in over 70 countries and over 35 languages. “We are honored to bring this project to the Central Valley,” said C. DeSha McLeod, President/CEO of Community Hospice. “Our mobile ‘Before I Die Wall’ will hopefully spark

conversations around our community and encourage productive and proactive end-of-life care decision making. We welcome and invite community members to visit our wall and share your thoughts,” McLeod continued. The “Before I Die Wall” will be at various locations throughout Stanislaus and San Joaquin Counties during the month of March/April. Locations include California State University at Stanislaus, Mary Stuart Rogers Building, University of the Pacific, Derosa University Center, Modesto Junior College, Love Modesto, Earth Day Modesto, Graceada Park and Community Hospice. ART Stanislaus Artist Open Studio Tour By Jim Christiansen It’s April! Stanislaus Artist Open Studio Tour is the main event this month. April 7 and 8, the tour features 63 local artists in 38 venues, from Turlock, to downtown Modesto, Greater Modesto, Escalon and Oakdale. Many of the venues are actual home studios, others more art display spots. It’s a great event to meet and talk to local artists on art, their work, what mediums they work in. I’m inviting you to my old 1930s built converted garage studio behind the 1925 old house on Bodem Street. Some studios are a bit more upscale, or converted barn. The artists show a variety of paintings, watercolors, drawings, tattoo art, poster art, ceramics and pottery, printmaking, wood work, metal, sculptures, art jewelry and the have-to see it to describe it. This is the Eighth year and resumes another original art give away by raffle of the Purchase award pieces noted on the event postcard and map cover. Fill in that form on page 3 and turn in at one of the artists you visit. Maps are $10, and it pays to get a tour guide early to plan your trip, pick your artists and genres. No need to go in order, and map is good both days, at most studios 11 am to 5 pm. I’m one of the artists who opens early around 10 am to extended hours 6 or 7. The map is good for artist contact information year around. Students 18 and under get in Free with a map holder. Great event to support the local art scene. Maps are available at Mistlin Gallery, Carnegie Center for the Arts, Oakdale Chamber of Commerce, Crow Trading Company, The Chartreuse Muse,

and Modesto Convention and Visitors Bureau. This event originated by the Stanislaus County Travel and Tourism Roundtable, so invite your friends from Out of Town. Art Will be available for purchase. You’ll see some works in progress, not for sale. Modesto, springtime is a busy time of year. Not only do we have a line up of professional shows at The Gallo and The State but we also have local community theatre productions filled with amazing talent, directed by local actors who have grown into directorial roles and a cornucopia of high school & jr high productions. For some people, “school” might be a deterrent but for the true theatre lover that is where it begins and watching kids discover their own talent and passion for their art makes watching something made on a shoestring budget worth it. High schools operate on only the budget left over from their profits from the year before - they get no funding from the district for their plays and musicals - so with minimal sets and costumes they rely on talent to see them through. And if you haven’t been to a high school show in our area, you are missing out! The developing talent to be found on these high school stages is worth watching, and sometimes there is a star in the making. Half of our Modesto area schools have closed the curtain on their productions for the year - if you didn’t catch Davis High’s Rejected Princesses (a lovely compilation of the true stories of women who changed history only to be left out of most history books), Johansen’s Heathers the Musical (a gritty R rated pop culture movie turned PG-13 rated musical that still rings all too true for today’s high school hierarchy) and Downey High’s Shrek the Musical (a fun, anti-fairy tale where the princess is rescued by an ogre and discovers that beauty comes in all shapes and sizes) then you missed out and you

should definitely go support the school productions still to come in April & May. Modesto Christian High School will be presenting The Little Mermaid on April 27th and 28th at the Gallo Center for the Arts, Modesto Christian’s middle school will be presenting Robin Hood on their campus May 10th and 11th, Gregori High will be presenting Legally Blonde on April 13th, 14th, 20th and 21st at 7pm, Great Valley Charter Modesto will be presenting The Wizard of Oz on May 10th and 11th, both on their own campuses. There are also two shows coming to the Gallo this summer with casts made up of primarily local teenagers, both with companies who have turned out bright stars who went on to Hollywood or Broadway so you don’t want to miss them! Modesto Performing Arts has already cast their first summer show - Grease the Musical, and YES Company, is holding auditions during April for their summer musical, Beauty and the Beast (open to 7th to 12 graders only). You can catch Grease for two weekends in June (Yes, the timing is perfect for Modesto’s celebration of all things American Graffiti) and Beauty and the Beast for two weekends in July both at Gallo Center for the Arts. – Modesto has always been in the ballgame!

I believe that a city is successful when it celebrates and embraces it’s history to build a modern story on. So many cities have no real history, but Modesto has a music history with Rockabilly, a Classic Car Graffiti History, world-class wine history with Gallo, we are the home of George Lucas and Star Wars and our hometown heroes like Royal Robbins pioneered the global sport of climbing, just to name a few. Modesto is legit! Our baseball history is also woven through our community and is part of most every kids life and back in the day, it was everything to many. We have a special guest history lesson today from local writers and historians Carl Baggese, who has a series of history books and Ken White, who just produces is Touchstones Modesto history and his book Getaway Day. Every baseball fan knows exactly when February is here. With the month of romance, of hearts and flowers, comes the arrival of pitchers and catchers ready for Spring Training. It happens with the same certainty as almond blossoms bursting out on the branches and limbs of the orchards around Modesto. For those who have waited through the brutal months of winter and the collisions of football and hockey, baseball signals that it is time to relax; to enjoy the less frenetic pace of a much more sedate, refined sport highlighting “the boys of summer.” Baseball once stood on a pedestal as “the great American pastime.” Youngsters honed their prowess by playing in parks, sandlots and streets throughout the country. Baseball captured the imaginations of boys and men (and more than a few girls and women) in every city and town in the country, imagining their prowess standing at home plate, looking the pitcher in the eye, and knocking the ball out of the park. While the game has been none too gently shoved off the pedestal by football, soccer, basketball and the like, it still fills ballparks around the country and provides dreams of glory to those who seek fame and fortune by landing on their favorite team. There are those who will tell you it’s not a game, it’s just a business now. Baseball is all about money and big player contracts. Yet when you look around a stadium, you will see unabashed joy from those in attendance. They cheer, they groan, they suffer agony as their team comes up short and joy when the score is in their favor. And if, by chance, that team makes it into the postseason – then watch the magic begin. Whether it is a local California League “A” team, like the Modesto Nuts; a “AAA” team with direct connections to a major league franchise like the Sacramento River Cats; or big city teams such as the San Francisco Giants or Oakland A’s, it’s all about the game, regardless of the astronomical contracts, the high cost of tickets or the price of a hot dog.

BASEBALL IN OUR BLOOD

Modesto was founded in 1870 and it seems that baseball has always been part of the town’s DNA. In 1872, a mere two years after its founding, the first baseball team was officially formed. An article in the September 22, 1872 Stanislaus News marked the occasion by reporting that although the players as yet had not evidenced much ability, they displayed “considerable muscle” and were “well backed with enthusiasm and vim,” according to Modesto, Then and Now. A month later, the team distinguished itself by choosing a uniform which featured a red cap, red shirt, white pantaloons and white canvas shoes. The name chosen for the team was the “Red Caps.” The Modesto Red Caps evolved by the early 1900s into the Modesto Reds. This would be the team’s name for decades. Early on they were part of a league that included Modesto, Merced, Chowchilla and Stockton. According to local historian, Colleen Bare, “the team traveled the circuit in a surrey pulled by four horses.” “The March 23, 1906 issue of the Stanislaus Weekly News announced

that the ‘unbeaten and invincible Modesto Reds,’ were challenging any baseball team in the San Joaquin Valley, even the American Association and the National League. The boys felt that they were ‘equal to it’ and were ‘chuck full of ginger,’ said the News, adding, ‘bring on your champions from the tall grass of Merced and the mud flats of Stockton, anywhere in fact.’ The article also noted that people would be willing to pay ‘two-bits’ all summer just to watch the Reds ‘eat ‘em alive.’” Apparently, the Chicago White Sox took notice of the upstart Modesto Reds, and spent eight days on a train traveling to Modesto to take on the Reds. The game took place on March 7, 1910, which the White Sox ended up winning 4-0. Over 2,000 people attended the game at Modesto’s Baseball Park. In those early days, Modesto was often a sparring partner for the San Francisco Seals, who would travel into the valley to challenge the Reds. A 1911 photograph shows the Seals perched on a parapet of the Tynan Hotel at 10th and H Streets in downtown Modesto on one of their visits.

In 1946, the Modesto Reds became part of the California League as an independent team.

The league, which had been formed in 1941, was reorganized after World War II as a minor league organization with A level teams. The Modesto team has the longest tenure of any California League team having been part of the organization since its inception in 1946. Modesto major league team affiliations over the years have included the St. Louis Browns, Pittsburgh Pirates, Milwaukee Braves, New York Yankees, Houston Colt 45s, St. Louis Cardinals, Oakland Athletics, Colorado Rockies and the present Seattle Mariners. During their tenure with the Oakland Athletics, which includes the major league club’s three 1970s World Series championships, the Modesto A’s contributed by providing a place for players that would eventually be called up to Oakland, including the likes of Reggie Jackson, Rickey Henderson, Joe Rudi and Sal Bando, among others. The makeup of the major league team with so many past members of the Modesto A’s once prompted A’s radio broadcaster, Bill King, to say, “The Modesto A’s just won the World Series for Oakland.”

“Getaway Day” and the World Series By Carl Baggese The center of the world of baseball was Modesto, California on Oct. 14, 1962. That day, for three hours, the World Series arrived in town. Typhoon Freda had dampened the baseball classic, and after three consecutive days of a postponed game six, the San Francisco Giants and New York Yankees sought a place to practice that was dry, welldrained and perfect for stretching their legs and letting the balls fly and the bats swing. Turned out, Del Webb Field, some 90 miles from Candlestick Park was the perfect place. Several thousand Modesto baseball fans showed up and filled the ballpark with joyful cheers. A few days later they would be listening to President Kennedy describe Russian nuclear missiles in Cuba aimed at the US. That’s pretty much the short version of the story. What it doesn’t convey is the dynamic of having some of Major League Baseball’s all-time great players, future Hall of Famers, descend on the small rural com-

While Del Webb Field (now Thurman Field) held about 5,000 spectators, the crowd size was estimated at 16,000. Those who were there 56 years ago as children have never forgotten that day when two major league teams, playing the World Series in San Francisco, took a break during the storms of Typhoon Freda, and found a dry spot for batting practice 90 miles from Candlestick Park. Ken White, local author, whose book, “Getaway Day,” not only commemorates that special day in 1962 when the World Series briefly stopped in Modesto, but also uses it as the basis for a fictional story about a local young boy, Mikey Wright, who seeks a way for his ailing father to meet his baseball idol, Mickey Mantle. The story uses many of White’s own experiences growing up in a rural small town, and intertwines it with a sometimes funny, sometimes emotional, but always entertaining tale of love and devotion to family and the game of baseball. Along the way, in the comingof-age story, White focuses on a journey taken by his Mikey where he runs into many famous people who help encourage him in his quest, also imparting wisdom and advice that deepens the young-

ster’s commitment to achieving his goal. White’s book begins with the 2010 San Francisco Giants’ World Series Victory Parade that brought a million people into the city to celebrate the team’s first championship, as an adult Mikey shares the moment with his son. Then the story flashes back to 1962 in Modesto so that Mikey can tell the story that forever creates a bond between him and America’s pastime. It is a history lesson and an inspiration that makes one realize the impact love (and baseball) can have on a young person’s life. “Getaway Day” is a must for anyone who loves baseball, and especially for those of us who live in Modesto and can recall the day the World Series came to town. This phrase, created by Modesto native George Lucas symbolizes the magic and influence of his epic film Star Wars, the follow-up film to his breakthrough American Graffiti. Just say “May the 4th Be With You” out loud and you will hear the pun that so many Star Wars fans worldwide have used to proclaim their love of the saga. “May the Force be with you” to all that celebrate Modesto’s best-known citizen George Lucas’s beloved Star Wars story is the phrase that binds us all together and is a message of hope for all, like peace or shalom. On May 3rd, 2016 an official proclamation was made by the City Council making May the Fourth Star Wars Day in Modesto. Last year marked the 40th Anniversary of Star Wars: A New Hope and we celebrated big in the 10th Street Plaza. A new tradition was born and this year Star Wars Day looks to be bigger and better. On Friday, May 4th 5 pm we will in the 10th Street Plaza once again celebrating all things

Hello everyone, we have a month packed with fun stuff to do so let’s get to it. On the 5th Poorhouse Millionaires and friends are back at Ralston’s Goat for a fun night of local comedy and music. On the 6th you can catch Terrie Londee and the B-4 Dawn Band at the Oakdale Sports Bar for some great dance music. On the 7th you have a few options. During the day, starting at 11am you can catch Tony and the Tuff Times over at Cycle Specialties in Modesto. Up in Jamestown I will be playing with the Poorhouse Millionaires at the Rawhide. It’s a really fun spot with lot of space and great atmosphere. If you want some fun at an even higher altitude you can catch Gary Gervase & Kickstart Blues at Pine Mountain Lake Resort in Groveland. On the 11th I will be hosting my first Blues Jam at St. Stan’s in 11th st in Modesto. It should be a lot of fun. On the 13th in Mariposa you can catch one of my favorite local singers miss Tiffany Rose will be at the Hideout Saloon. Also on the 13th you can check out Fresno’s own AC

Sundays are always worth checking out at Ralston’s Goat these day but make double sure to head over on the 15th to check out Sol Riddim. They aren’t blues but they are a lot of fun and great musicians one and all. Jumping ahead to the 21st you have some options. The lodi Blues and Brews at the Lodi Event Center with a few bands including Jeramy Norris and the Dangerous Mood heading things up. Gary Gervase & Kickstart Blues at Barkin Dog, this will be a really fun show for sure. Or you can take a trip up Sac way and check out Big Earl and the Cryin’ Shame on the Sac River Beer Train. Gary Gervase & Kickstart Blues will be at Spring Creek in Ripon on the 26th. You could also consider heading up to Black Oak Casino that night and checking out SRV Experience with Catfish Daniels. I played with Catfish late last year and he is a monster blues rock guy. If you dig SRV, Jimi Hendrix or a little band called ZZ Top then Catfish is your Dude. On the 27 you can check out Two-Tone Steiny and the Cadillacs at Valley Brewing in Stockton. This concert series is a lot of fun and I have heard that this band is top notch too. Also on the 27th I will be at the 108 Sports Lounge in Riverbank with the Poorhouse Millionaires. We always have a good time out in the City of Action. Folks, I hope you have a great month. COMEDY Hello, hello, hello Welcome to the April edition of Comedy View. This month’s theme for the Modesto View is sports. As a comic, I will do my best to resist making any “kicking it into the basket for a home run” jokes. Have you been keeping up with my monthly interview videos, “Run the Light” on ModestoView.com? It only takes 10 minutes to meet a new comic, so check it out. This month’s video is with A.J. DeMello. A.J. is from Turlock and has been in comedy for about six years. He currently has a monthly show—Ha Sauce Comedy Delight at the Pizza Factory in Turlock and also produced the charity comedy show at Queen Bean for a few years. We talk about his writing discipline and how horror and comedy are similar. On the video, A.J. and my cameraman, Rocco, try to teach me to stop using “filler words”. I’ve got to stop it with the “umms” and “likes”, I never hear Oprah talk like that! If you’ve ever used a water spray bottle to try to keep your cat off the counter or your dog off the couch, then you’ll know what I’m talking about. This was a fun, damp episode. Train Like A Frogman by Efren Martinez When we think of a frogman, most of us usually tie that with a Navy Seal. My comparison would be to train similar to one of these heroes if you’re a tri-athlete. Just recently I headed back to the Sea of Cortez for some winter open-ocean training. The ability to be able to master your swim, then run, can make or break you in a triathlon. In the past, I learned the hard way that after swimming a couple of miles in the open ocean, and then trying to run out of it, can be quite difficult. As it is, you’ve just swam 2 miles in the choppiest, sometimes coldest, water and you get to shore to instinctively run out to transition to your bike. The thing is, after you’ve swam such a distance, your body is still in swim mode and your legs are too. This is why so many tri-athletes come out of the water only to reach the shore and fall right on their face. Sometimes they twist a foot or even break a wrist. This will end your competition immediately. While I was in Cabo, I trained like a frogman using the inside parameter of my resorts buoys. First I’d start with a run on the shore where the first buoy started,

time my entry to the ocean with the waves, swim 100 yards out, then 450 yards across, 100 back in, only to practice running out of the water and running like heck 450 yards to where I started. After about 6 loops and a little over an over, you should have your body acclimated to be able to get out of the water very quickly and start your run without falling on your face. It’s an intense workout, but not nearly as much as my yearly swim across the Sea of Cortez to Lands End. It’s nearly a 3-mile swim, but the chop of the open ocean is what makes it extremely challenging. This year I tried something different, instead of swimming from the mainland to Lands End, I swam from Lands End to the mainland. I did it

an unbelievable time of 23:18 when it generally takes me 43 minutes to swim the opposite way. No, I don’t have any super powers like Aqua Man to be able to swim so fast. What helped me get to the main land this time was that I had the ocean’s current take me to shore externally fast. Honestly it really wasn’t that hard of a workout like I was expecting. I prefer to have more of a challenge because in competition, and especially in real life, challenges are part of the game. Regardless, I did have a great time and to celebrate my success my wife bought me some special frogman goggles as seen here. Train hard and have fun with it. Please Spay & Neuter your pets.

of excitement and chaos towards the end of the school year. Though having a lot on your plate can be appealing, it is extremely important to take a step back and reflect on yourself! I consider April a month of rejuvenation. There are many ways that you can treat yourself to a break from daily chaos. One of the most rewarding things I have done for myself in 2018 was getting a massage at NTouch BodyWork & Healing Arts! From beginning to end, the experience was beyond authentic and professional. The hour long massage put me into pure bliss and I was able to think and reflect on my year so far. There’s no word to describe the experience other than tranquil. I am currently hooked on the Açaí Bowl scene in Modesto. ZEN Fear of the unknown by Mary Layton Human nature is hungry for information and knowing stuff. We don’t do so well with the unknown. In the ancient world kings would go ask the advice of an oracle or gaze into a crystal ball to see the future. Today we ask Siri, Alexa or go on the internet. The more specific our questions, the more we learn about any given subject. The more we can find out ahead of time the more secure we feel. We can now find out and communicate moment to moment information about weather and road conditions. We can send pictures and emojis showing our location and emotional states. Thanks to Facebook and similar entities, we are traceable, no matter where we are in the world. We can let others know the moment our plane, bus or train has arrived, or whether we will be delayed.

But even though technology has given us greater certainty in some areas of our lives, fear of the unknown remains. No matter how much data we have on anything, the way things are actually going to play out in the end we do not know. The time of our birth and time and cause of death is a mystery. Fear of the unknown in a nutshell. We really have no other choice but to bow to it. In that way we stand where our ancestors once stood. For myself, rather than fighting I like the idea of embracing the fear of the unknown. It means that I have to learn to let go off my conditioning and become completely quiet in my mind. It is only then, in the absence of thought and information that I can hope to find the answers I seek. MUSIC IN THE PLAZA - 10th STREET DOWNTOWN MODESTO We are very excited for Music in the Plaza to be starting soon and with an incredible lineup featuring 10 acts that didn’t perform last year out of the 22 total. Kicking the season off May the Fourth with the Star Wars Celebration featuring the Lodge Pole Pickers. Dress up, bring your lightsabers, and maybe you will find the droids you were looking for. Join Big Earl’s Poorhouse Millionaires May 11th bringing down the Plaza with some smoking hot blues. May 18th a new addition to the Series will be Texas Funk along with dancers and more celebrating Hispanic Heritage. Finishing out the month on May 25th a favorite from last year A La Lune will be playing some smooth riddims and reggae tunes for everyone to enjoy. So make plans to come to the 10th Street Plaza every Friday starting May 4th until the end of September grab a seat on the Patio at Fuzio or Ralston’s Goat or just bring your lawn chair and enjoy some fantastic music from some of the areas finest.

Go Modesto: Project Prom

Modesto City Councilmember Tony Madrigal, 3B Auto Center and Manos Unidas have teamed up to bring back Project Prom. They want to make sure that everyone who wants to go to Prom and be dressed to the 9’s can. Over the last few months, Tuxedos and Prom Dresses have been collected at various locations around Modesto(it is not too late to donate.) Your donations will be given away to high school students who want to attend prom and be able to participate without the worry of their attire. Head downtown to 3B Auto 1002 9th Street on Saturday, April 7th from 10 am to 8 pm. Donors can also call 209-531-1111 and they will gladly pick up your dress or tuxedo donation.
