It’s baseball season friends. I’m not really the kind of baseball fan that tracks the stats and watches all of the games, but I love the idea of the sport, the ballpark, that people still listen with a transistor radio with an earphone, the 7th inning stretch, peanuts & crackerjack and the tastes of all of the ballpark food. Baseball is so much more than a game, it’s an experience. You can chit chat, daydream and just soak it in and let yourself go for 9, 10, or maybe 11 or more innings. The best of baseball is local ball, our own Modesto Nuts (still think they should have been the “Cruisers”) is where the fun of baseball is. I know so many people who grew up in and around John Thurman field. When my father in law, Mike was a kid, he used to clean up the stands after the games in exchange for hot dogs and a soda. So this month, we take you back to the days when it began to help you usher in baseball, and out of respect, we explore the local world of hot dogs for our ChefView. Let’s play ball!

Modesto View Wins Gold MarCom Creative Awards!

We are so very honored that ModestoView Magazine has won Gold at the annual MarCom Awards for 5 years in a row. It is so very exciting that our locally produced magazine with a mission to “Serve Civic Pride Daily” took top national honors. Thanks to all of our ViewCrew writers and to the amazing design duo of Peter Grimaldi and Photo Artist Michael J Mangano for these amazing creative skills. Hope you enjoy what we are doing.

Modesto has it going on this year. We were so fortunate to have one of our own in the Winter Olympics in South Korea and we are lucky to have an interview with Kendall Wesenberg as she shares her experiences about the games and her hopes for the future. Our friend Effie Passero (formerly Francesca Bavarro) has been killing it on American Idol and we hope to stay with her as she climbs to the top. There are a couple of things that are close to my heart, one of them is my heart. It has been an interesting couple of months as I worked through my heart issues and with my RF Ablation last month, things are working good and thank you all for the warm wishes and positive vibes. But that doesn’t mean I can stop being careful and being heart smart. I am serving as the Chair of the American Heart Association Leadership Team and we are working to raise funds for heart related research and care. Please plan on supporting the Go Red for Women Luncheon on May 4 and the Walk for Heart in September. Email me for more info. The other thing close to my heart, especially as a husband and parent of daughters, is the treatment of women and putting a stop to domestic violence. This is why we are going to Walk a Mile in Her Shoes on April 28 to raise money for Haven Women’s Center. Please take a minute to support our ModestoView / Sierra Pacific team for this high-heeled mile long walk through downtown Modesto. See more details

on page 15. My community is close to my heart as well, and as we celebrate our hometown events and activities, behind each and everyone of them is some one or a local business dedicated to making our community better. We all need to look out for each other, keep each other safe and make sure we are using our positive energy. The businesses in this magazine make this possible so please visit them. We march together, play together, work together and support each other, and ModestoView is here to support you all and spread the good news in our community. Thanks for reading and being a Modesto area friend. Chris Murphy Publisher and Founder, ModestoView chrism@modestoview.com PS. I will be playing a Breakfast with the Beatles acoustic set at Deva Café on April 22 from 10-12 so come hang out with me. PPS. Porchfest is coming May 20th. Put it on your calendar. Our house will be on the map with 5 bands so check out. It is free and fun. www.modestoporchfest.com/

On the Cover

In the spirit of baseball season starting this month, our cover artist Michael Mangano brought to life a baseball fantasy of being in the big leagues throwing out the first pitch with ViewCrew friend Chris Roe. “ This field, this game: it’s a part of our past, Ray. It reminds of us of all that once was good and it could be again.” -Field of Dreams

ART Stanislaus Artist Open Studio Tour By Jim Christiansen It’s April! Stanislaus Artist Open Studio Tour is the main event this month. April 7 and 8, the tour features 63 local artists in 38 venues, from Turlock, to downtown Modesto, Greater Modesto, Escalon and Oakdale. Many of the venues are actual home studios, others more art display spots. It’s a great event to meet and talk to local artists on art, their work, what mediums they work in. I’m inviting you to my old 1930s built converted garage studio behind the 1925 old house on Bodem Street. Some studios are a bit more upscale, or converted barn. The artists show a variety of paintings, watercolors, drawings, tattoo art, poster art, ceramics and pottery, printmaking, wood work, metal, sculptures, art jewelry and the have-to see it to describe it. This is the Eighth year and resumes another original art give away by raffle of the Purchase award pieces noted on the event postcard and map cover. Fill in that form on page 3 and turn in at one of the artists you visit. Maps are $10, and it pays to get a tour guide early to plan your trip, pick your artists and genres. No need to go in order, and map is good both days, at most studios 11 am to 5 pm. I’m one of the artists who opens early around 10 am to extended hours 6 or 7. The map is good for artist contact information year around. Students 18 and under get in Free with a map holder. Great event to support the local art scene. Maps are available at Mistlin Gallery, Carnegie Center for the Arts, Oakdale Chamber of Commerce, Crow Trading Company, The Chartreuse Muse,

and Modesto Convention and Visitors Bureau. This event originated by the Stanislaus County Travel and Tourism Roundtable, so invite your friends from Out of Town. Art Will be available for purchase. You’ll see some works in progress, not for sale. If you need a map April 7 or 8, participating artists have maps available, and if you really need one, stop by 537 Bodem Street, Modesto and Carman or I will get one to you. Besides Modesto View column and ad, we have radio spots on cap radio, and I just presented a talk on our event to Modesto Kiwanis. Get the word out. Many on our tour exhibit out of town. Clay Bedford, Rita Barbano, Annabell Souza show at Delta Gallery in Brentwood. Quite a few in the Spring Plein Air season in Monterey, or western art. So Support your local artist. Check out the new Utility box décor downtown. Crow Trading has a poster for an April 21 show seeking artists at Tuolumne River Lodge. Chartreuse Muse is seeking portfolios for their Summer Emergence show, entries due April 15. Mistlin Gallery will offer up its Spring Awakenings show through April 28. Art Walk comes up April 19. I have a show of five of my award-winning watercolors, plus one up at Barkin Dog Grill. John Watson will replace me for Art Walk in his debut solo show. Thank you to Tri-Chromatic Gallery (Chelsea and Zoe are on Open Studio) and Gallo Center for the Open Studio preview show. Look for the Shire art space to open up soon, and check out Moon and Sixpence events, where art sometimes shows with the music. Spring has sprung.

DoGood GINger Martini

By Chris Murphy

“I am so into ginger right now” explains Raw Bartender and health and fitness trainer Melinda Jaco. When she is not getting people into shape, she is working on ways to create fresh tasting cocktails that DoGood for the body. The DoGood Tiki Gin is one of those spirits that can play well with fresh ingredients like ginger, that she muddles to form the base of the GINger Martini. On any normal day, the bar is usually packed and Melinda knows many by name and is quick to offer a food and drink recommendation Melinda totally enjoys working on new creations, and one if her favorite things to do at Raw is create fresh cocktails that work with the fresh sushi and other Japanese style food. When you take the first sip of the GINger Martini, you feel a tingling of freshness and a drink that tastes and feels light. “Eat, drink and be skinny and healthy” Melinda says. One of the reasons it tastes so fresh is that the elder flower St. Germain, brings out the fresh ginger. Go out and get yourself some DoGood Tiki Gin. If you don’t want to try this yourself, please head to Raw and ask for the DoGood GINger Martini You will leave feeing refreshed and will have a great time.

APRIL 2018... Play Ball!

Modesto, springtime is a busy time of year. Not only do we have a line up of professional shows at The Gallo and The State but we also have local community theatre productions filled with amazing talent, directed by local actors who have grown into directorial roles and a cornucopia of high school & jr high productions. For some people, “school” might be a deterrent but for the true theatre lover that is where it begins and watching kids discover their own talent and passion for their art makes watching something made on a shoestring budget worth it. High schools operate on only the budget left over from their profits from the year before - they get no funding from the district for their plays and musicals - so with minimal sets and costumes they rely on talent to see them through. And if you haven’t been to a high school show in our area, you are missing out! The developing talent to be found on these high school stages is worth watching, and sometimes there is a star in the making. Half of our Modesto area schools have closed the curtain on their productions for the year - if you didn’t catch Davis High’s Rejected Princesses (a lovely compilation of the true stories of women who changed history only to be left out of most history books), Johansen’s Heathers the Musical (a gritty R rated pop culture movie turned PG-13 rated musical that still rings all too true for today’s high school hierarchy) and Downey High’s Shrek the Musical (a fun, anti-fairy tale where the princess is rescued by an ogre and discovers that beauty comes in all shapes and sizes) then you missed out and you

should definitely go support the school productions still to come in April & May. Modesto Christian High School will be presenting The Little Mermaid on April 27th and 28th at the Gallo Center for the Arts, Modesto Christian’s middle school will be presenting Robin Hood on their campus May 10th and 11th, Gregori High will be presenting Legally Blonde on April 13th, 14th, 20th and 21st at 7pm, Great Valley Charter Modesto will be presenting The Wizard of Oz on May 10th and 11th, both on their own campuses. There are also two shows coming to the Gallo this summer with casts made up of primarily local teenagers, both with companies who have turned out bright stars who went on to Hollywood or Broadway so you don’t want to miss them! Modesto Performing Arts has already cast their first summer show - Grease the Musical, and YES Company, is holding auditions during April for their summer musical, Beauty and the Beast (open to 7th to 12 graders only). You can catch Grease for two weekends in June (Yes, the timing is perfect for Modesto’s celebration of all things American Graffiti) and Beauty and the Beast for two weekends in July both at Gallo Center for the Arts. Hope to see you at the theater!

CHEF

Hot Dogs,

! e r e H s g o D t o H r get you By The Modeto View Crew

As we wrap ourselves in baseball season, one thing is for sure; you can’t go to a baseball game without getting a hot dog. In many cases, I anticipate the dogs more than the game. Hot Dogs are one of the all-time hall of fame best guilty culinary pleasures. There are dogs that get you through in a pinch from Weinershnitzel and there are some serious gourmet dogs. Some of the best dogs in the world can be found at a street cart, wrapped in bacon. The ViewCrew hit the hot dog trail and found some of our favorite wiener treats. Please comment on this article on ModestoView.com and add your own favorite dogs.

Enjoy this treat and Play Ball!

The “Chicago Dog”

at Barkin’ Dog

I like my hot dogs to have a kic k, so I order the Chicago Dog at Ba rking Dog made with Casper hot dog s. I suggest having a cold beer nea rby because these Windy City dog s covered with jalapeños bite bac k! 940 11th St, Modesto

A & W - Root Beer

This is as close to the original Modesto drive-in culture as you can get. Pull up in your classic car, push the button on the menu kiosk and soon, a car hop will appear at your car to take your order. This is the easy part, you order “1 Coney Dog and 1 Large Root Beer, for here” You can get fries or curds too, but the dog and the root beer is the mainstay. This is a tasty all beef wiener, smothered in chili, onions and covered with cheese. This is one of my all time fave dogs. A foot long would even be better. I sat and enjoyed my dog in the car, remembering all those that sat there during the days of the cruise and listened to Beatles on the radio. If only KFIV 1360 still played oldies, but now you have the Vine 92.3 for oldies locally. I suggest you make it an experience

1404 G St, Modesto 95354 209-522-7700 10 am – 8 pm M- S Sun 11-8

Footers - Brandilyn Brown

My favorite hot dog is the Western Bacon Cheese Footer from Footers. It has all the best toppings for a dog: BBQ sauce, onions, tomatoes, bacon, with both jack and cheddar cheese. All their dogs are steamed, so they are incredible juicy! I also like to add avocado on occasion. You can pick your side from pretzels, chips, or fruit, and along with traditional soda, they have a plethora of Italian soda flavors to choose from. There is plenty of indoor and outdoor seating at this adorable little hot dog bar.

Ball Games and Fairs - Middagh Goodwin We can all argue who makes the best dog in town but it is really subjective isn’t it. I am less a fan of the food and more of the experience. Eating a dog at a ball game is a right of passage and really has to be repeated game after game. The Modesto Nuts opening game is April 12th so no better time to grab a dog and a beer and enjoy the spring air.

Stanislaus County Fair is just around the corner and there is nothing like eating a footlong corndog on the midway. Not sure what it is about the heat of Summer and the flashing lights of the games and rides that make them seem to taste so good.

POET Extra Innings By Sam Pierstorff

This is it— my first baseball glove. I am 34-years-old, scarred by the flames of divorce. No pop flies. No pop. Left with just me and my brother, the bookworm, not even a ball to break a window with. But today, across the glass dining room table sits my 7-year-old son, flapping his new leather mitt like a butterfly’s fiery wings so quickly I get the feeling he might fly away before I can teach him how to catch what I never could.

UNPLUGGED Songcatchers by Aaron Rowan

April Movies A warm tropical evening on an island in the Panama Canal. I join my dear friend on the balcony of the laboratory building, where she is about to wind down another day of research in the best possible way - the making of live music. A few of her fellow scientists here are also fellow musicians, and tonight she and her banjo are accompanied by a guitarist from Germany. They pair well on a few folksy songs. A third player takes up his seat to join the fun - a clarinetist! An orchestral folk-rock jam welcomes me to my first night on this island where very few have had the privilege of setting foot. Sharon and I go back to my first year as a music curator, and she is one of the songwriters I

METAL Mind Of A Machine by Eve Oberlander Mind of a Machine is a band from Modesto and Los Banos and has been around since 2013. Collin Torres, Lead Guitar and Chico Barker, Drums are the original members with Roger Guajardo on Bass and Eric Doran on Vocals. Each member has been in previous killer bands from the area such as Modesto legends, Siep, American Witch, Wicked Hickie, Beyond All Brutality, Forever Obscured and The Bone Man. I want to share with you a little back story and history about Collin Torres, Mind of a Machine’s driving force. Collin started playing the drums in 1986 and the tender age of 8. Once he got into high school he wanted to switch to guitar but his Mother wouldn’t let him sell his drum set so he continued playing the drums. In 1994 Collin and two other musicians formed the band Carcinogen. One of those members was Modesto’s Jimbo Warr Guitarist, of 17TEN and The Venting Machine who played bass. Carcinogen got a new bass player and moved down to Los Angeles in 1998. That’s when they

most look forward to hosting. But for the past two and a half months, she has devoted herself to the study of katydids on this island, recording and analyzing the unique song of each specimen she collects. It appears that katydids are slowly phasing out the practice of chirping, possibly as a survival adaptation against the bats which hunt them by sonar. As Sharon puts it, her current research project is like studying the evolution of silence. After a few days and nights exploring the rainforest, meeting new critters both cute and creepy, and running up and down hillsides helping Sharon rustle up her katydids, I return home and waste no time jumping back into the wonderful work of bringing some of the most unique and interesting live music to Modesto. A few good friends and I are doing what we can to ensure that such beautiful sounds do not disappear from the area. Come by and see what we have to offer, and you’ll experience a side of the Modesto music scene you may not be used to. Many of this month’s highlights evoke a sense of

changed the name to Depswa. Depswa started playing big clubs down in LA where they eventually got noticed by Glenn Danzig, Corey Taylor and Sharon Osbourne. Collin and his band Depswa played a private show for Sharon Osbourne at SIR rehearsal studios on the Sunset Strip. After that, Geffen Records set up the band with a private show at the Viper Room. Corey Taylor, of Slipknot and Stonesour, came to Depswa’s house a few times partied and watched the guys play their set. Once they played for Corey, he wanted to sign them to his record label, Maggot Records. The band ended up getting signed to Geffen Records. During this time Collin and his band got to play a show with Danzig in San Diego, and they had Disturbed open for them at the Troubadour in Hollywood. Personality differences lead Collin to leave Depswa and at that moment, Collin joined three bands all at once. They were 151, Stigma and Jet Motor Crash. Stigma went on to have major motion pictures (Without a Paddle and Epic Movie), TV spots like Nickelodeon and MTV. Stigma’s music is also on VH1’s Pantera

BREW Di scover the 10 8

By Brandilyn Brown and Christopher Mitchell

Pictured: Nick Mejia, Miriam Rodriguez, Courtney Rose , Josh Plante, Yolanda Phillps If you’re like us, you are always on the look out to try new drinks at new places. But being us, who tend to be oblivious at times, you might drive right past a great place many times before stopping in, not aware of any giant orange and yellow sign that might be posted on the building. Don’t be like us, been on the look-out for new places, explore every nook and cranny, because that is how you will discover your new favorite watering hole. That is how we recently discovered the 108 Sports Lounge in Riverbank. We’ve driven by it likely 108 times on our way to Oakdale or Sonora, but there’s no reason you couldn’t make the 108 Sports Lounge your final destination of the day instead! Not a dive bar, nor a tavern or saloon, not quite a mezzanine either-this place is in a class all of its own. The atmosphere is sleek and modern, with soft black pleather couches, pool tables, and an entire wall of dart boards. Did we mention the TV’s? Dozens of them. All to entertain you with any sport you may want to see. And if lounging isn’t your thing, fear not, what you really come here for are the drinks. There are over 900 liquors on hand from around the globe, and 30 beers on tap that rotate constantly. They were the first bar to serve beer from our favorite Oakdale brewery, Last Call, which is currently tapped alongside Belching Beaver and Angry Orchard, some of our other favorite brands. Nicholas (Nick) Mejia, bar manager, and his team of bartenders, welcomed us for a sample of some lovely libations. When Nick served in the navy, he bartended in New Orleans and Japan, learning tricks and ideas that set him apart. Bringing his knowledge back to his hometown, he paired his concoctions with the smiles and compassion of his staff, becoming a cocktail-loving Justice League. With any alcohol you could ever want on hand, they can

make you lit’rilly anything you want. (That was the best Chris Trager impression right there!) Miriam Rodriguez made us a 108 Cocktail, whiskey with brown sugar and black walnut bitters served over an ice sphere, garnished with orange peel. Courtney Rose created the Mother’s Day Cocktail for us, a blend of crushed mint and blueberries, hibiscus syrup made in-house, over vodka with a dash of lemonade. Both were delicious and refreshing! We asked them why they like doing what they do, and we got one of the best answers in the business! They love being a part of people’s lives, and celebrating all their good times with them. One Saturday, they hosted a 22 year old’s birthday party and a 65 year old’s birthday party at the same time! Because anyone of any age (over 21 of course) can take refuge here, relaxing and enjoying a break from the mundane. “We take care of our community, which is our family, by giving them a home-away-fromhome. We give them an experience they don’t need to leave Riverbank for.” We couldn’t agree more! So the next time you drive down 108, stop in and treat your tastebuds. Billiards is free all day on Tuesdays, UFC is on all the time, bands and comedians often entertain you on the weekends, so it doesn’t matter what you define as “a good time”, it can be found here: because good people always equal good times!

Kendall Wesenberg –

Olympic Experiences and Advice By Chris Murphy

Modesto is fortunate to have many hometown heroes, and it seems like there are always more people that are stepping up to take this part. The people of Modesto were celebrating having one of their own at the Winter Olympics in South Korea. Kendall Wesenberg is the daughter of Carl and Laurie Wesenberg and grew up in Modesto. Kendall has always been an athlete excelling in soccer, basketball, golf, tennis, volleyball, track and field and spent a lot of time in the mountains skiing and snowboarding as well as at the lake water skiing. After playing sports at Central Catholic, she graduated from University of Colorado at Boulder. One of her favorite experiences was being a counselor at Foothill Horizons and many of the local kids in our community experienced her leadership. Kendall will be the keynote speaker and share her story at the American Heart Association’s Wear Go Red for Women Luncheon on May 4th. Let’s catch up with Kendall: ModestoView: Did you ever imagine that one day you would be in the Olympics? Kendall Wesenberg: I always took pride in being an athlete but the Olympics were never anything I had in mind until I started skeleton. MV: What was different about the Olympics than during your training efforts? KW: We tried to keep everything the same as a normal race both on the preparation and performance side and by race day it honestly felt like another world cup race, albeit with a much larger crowd. MV: What do you think you will do differently going forward to build on this experience? KW: My hip has finally got back to a point where it can withstand an entire season of effort and stress so I’m excited to keep improving on my push and we have a lot of ground to make up on the equipment side of things, so a lot of my focus is on how to improve that right now. MV: What was your favorite Olympic moment? KW: The opening ceremonies was hands down one of the coolest things I have ever gotten to do.

MV: What advice would you give to people that are thinking about trying a new sport? KW: my advice to any one looking to try the sport is to go for it! If you think it’s something you might be good at, you have nothing to lose in giving it a shot. Worst case scenario, you’ll have a good story. MV: Is there something you learned during your high school and college sport years that really prepared you for where you are now? KW: the commitment it takes to be an athlete and to plan and prioritize your schedule is something that you learn growing up as an athlete and that is super helpful in professional sports as well as the rest of your life. MV: How cool was it to see your many family and friends there at the Olympics cheering you on?

MV: What is the first thing you did after the Olympics. KW: I slept and watched Netflix for about a week. Caught up on a bunch of appointments and am now traveling through Europe for a few weeks to take a break from it all and enjoy some adventure with nowhere to be MV: What should a kid, that is considering taking up an Olympic sport, do to prepare themselves? KW: IF a kid is setting their goals on the Olympics or any professional sport endeavor, first and foremost, they should make sure they love it. You’re going to spend a lot of time working to be better at it and sacrifice a lot of other opportunities in the process so if you don’t love it, none of that will be worth it and eventually it will be hard to find motivation and secondly, find balance. You need other outlets and passions and hobbies so that you aren’t so caught up in one thing. MV: Any shout outs you want to give to your home team that helped you make it to this level? KW: I don’t like to do shout outs because I am always worried I’ll forget someone but I am truly so thankful for all of the people who have helped me get to this point, whether in an athletic realm or just in helping to shape who I am today. MV: What is your next goal? KW: After I get a decent amount of rest in, I’m going to get back to training to try and make the world cup team again next season and see what I can do. MV: Our fun signature question: Beatles or Stones? KW: Beatles!

KW: having a group of my friends and family there meant everything to me. I had a pretty Learn more about Kendall on her official awful race at a really important time but having Facebook page: www.facebook.com/kendallthem there helped me through the end of the wesenbergusa/ race and the emotions after and also, kept the Learn more about the American Heart Asimportant things in perspective. KW: Missing the turn 2 to 3 transition in my first run. My Olympic race was basically over in 10 seconds. That corner had been tricky all week but I got it really well on two of my last couple of training runs so to miss it like that in the first run and take myself out of the race so early was really tough. TAKE ACTION Walk a Mile for Haven By Chris Murphy We have no use for spousal or domestic abuse. This is something that we all must stand up against and prevent sexual abuse of any kind. We must support those that protect our most vulnerable in our community. The Haven Women’s Center does work that is literally life saving in the most dangerous times. Women need a safe place to get away and feel safe. This is why Sierra Pacific and ModestoView are Walking a Mile in Her Shoes. Men from all walks of life will be wearing bright red pumps to show solidarity that we have no use for abuse. The ModestoView Team will be out walking to raise money for Haven. We hope that you will dig down deep and support our team. We will be walking Saturday morning, April 28. Please make a quick contribution so we can make a difference. BIG

Vintage Baseball By Chris Murphy

– Modesto has always been in the ballgame!

I believe that a city is successful when it celebrates and embraces it’s history to build a modern story on. So many cities have no real history, but Modesto has a music history with Rockabilly, a Classic Car Graffiti History, world-class wine history with Gallo, we are the home of George Lucas and Star Wars and our hometown heroes like Royal Robbins pioneered the global sport of climbing, just to name a few. Modesto is legit! Our baseball history is also woven through our community and is part of most every kids life and back in the day, it was everything to many. We have a special guest history lesson today from local writers and historians Carl Baggese, who has a series of history books and Ken White, who just produces is Touchstones Modesto history and his book Getaway Day. I hope you enjoy this.

Modesto High

Every baseball fan knows exactly when February is here. With the month of romance, of hearts and flowers, comes the arrival of pitchers and catchers ready for Spring Training. It happens with the same certainty as almond blossoms bursting out on the branches and limbs of the orchards around Modesto. For those who have waited through the brutal months of winter and the collisions of football and hockey, baseball signals that it is time to relax; to enjoy the less frenetic pace of a much more sedate, refined sport highlighting “the boys of summer.” Baseball once stood on a pedestal as “the great American pastime.” Youngsters honed their prowess by playing in parks, sandlots and streets throughout the country. Baseball captured the imaginations of boys and men (and more than a few girls and women) in every city and town in the country, imagining their prowess standing at home plate, looking the pitcher in the eye, and knocking the ball out of the park. While the game has been none too gently shoved off the pedestal by football, soccer, basketball and the like, it still fills ballparks around the country and provides dreams of glory to those who seek fame and fortune by landing on their favorite team. There are those who will tell you it’s not a game, it’s just a business now. Baseball is all about money and big player contracts. Yet when you look around a stadium, you will see unabashed joy from those in attendance. They cheer, they groan, they suffer agony as their team comes up short and joy when the score is in their favor. And if, by chance, that team makes it into the postseason – then watch the magic begin. Whether it is a local California League “A” team, like the Modesto Nuts; a “AAA” team with direct connections to a major league franchise like the Sacramento River Cats; or big city teams such as the San Francisco Giants or Oakland A’s, it’s all about the game, regardless of the astronomical contracts, the high cost of tickets or the price of a hot dog.

BASEBALL IN OUR BLOOD

Modesto was founded in 1870 and it seems that baseball has always been part of the town’s DNA. In 1872, a mere two years after its founding, the first baseball team was officially formed. An article in the September 22, 1872 Stanislaus News marked the occasion by reporting that although the players as yet had not evidenced much ability, they displayed “considerable muscle” and were “well backed with enthusiasm and vim,” according to Modesto, Then and Now. A month later, the team distinguished itself by choosing a uniform which featured a red cap, red shirt, white pantaloons and white canvas shoes. The name chosen for the team was the “Red Caps.” The Modesto Red Caps evolved by the early 1900s into the Modesto Reds. This would be the team’s name for decades. Early on they were part of a league that included Modesto, Merced, Chowchilla and Stockton. According to local historian, Colleen Bare, “the team traveled the circuit in a surrey pulled by four horses.” “The March 23, 1906 issue of the Stanislaus Weekly News announced

that the ‘unbeaten and invincible Modesto Reds,’ were challenging any baseball team in the San Joaquin Valley, even the American Association and the National League. The boys felt that they were ‘equal to it’ and were ‘chuck full of ginger,’ said the News, adding, ‘bring on your champions from the tall grass of Merced and the mud flats of Stockton, anywhere in fact.’ The article also noted that people would be willing to pay ‘two-bits’ all summer just to watch the Reds ‘eat ‘em alive.’” Apparently, the Chicago White Sox took notice of the upstart Modesto Reds, and spent eight days on a train traveling to Modesto to take on the Reds. The game took place on March 7, 1910, which the White Sox ended up winning 4-0. Over 2,000 people attended the game at Modesto’s Baseball Park. In those early days, Modesto was often a sparring partner for the San Francisco Seals, who would travel into the valley to challenge the Reds. A 1911 photograph shows the Seals perched on a parapet of the Tynan Hotel at 10th and H Streets in downtown Modesto on one of their visits.

In 1946, the Modesto Reds became part of the California League as an independent team.

The league, which had been formed in 1941, was reorganized after World War II as a minor league organization with A level teams. The Modesto team has the longest tenure of any California League team having been part of the organization since its inception in 1946. Modesto major league team affiliations over the years have included the St. Louis Browns, Pittsburgh Pirates, Milwaukee Braves, New York Yankees, Houston Colt 45s, St. Louis Cardinals, Oakland Athletics, Colorado Rockies and the present Seattle Mariners. During their tenure with the Oakland Athletics, which includes the major league club’s three 1970s World Series championships, the Modesto A’s contributed by providing a place for players that would eventually be called up to Oakland, including the likes of Reggie Jackson, Rickey Henderson, Joe Rudi and Sal Bando, among others. The makeup of the major league team with so many past members of the Modesto A’s once prompted A’s radio broadcaster, Bill King, to say, “The Modesto A’s just won the World Series for Oakland.”

“Getaway Day” and the World Series By Carl Baggese The center of the world of baseball was Modesto, California on Oct. 14, 1962. That day, for three hours, the World Series arrived in town. Typhoon Freda had dampened the baseball classic, and after three consecutive days of a postponed game six, the San Francisco Giants and New York Yankees sought a place to practice that was dry, welldrained and perfect for stretching their legs and letting the balls fly and the bats swing. Turned out, Del Webb Field, some 90 miles from Candlestick Park was the perfect place. Several thousand Modesto baseball fans showed up and filled the ballpark with joyful cheers. A few days later they would be listening to President Kennedy describe Russian nuclear missiles in Cuba aimed at the US. That’s pretty much the short version of the story. What it doesn’t convey is the dynamic of having some of Major League Baseball’s all-time great players, future Hall of Famers, descend on the small rural com-

Author’s Note: Carl Baggese is the author of “Images of America – Modesto” and a postcard book, “Modesto,” both published by Arcadia Publishing. He also developed the website, www.historicmodesto.com, and has been a newspaper reporter and a community theater producer. Most recently he contributed several articles and photos for “Touchstones: Life and Times of Modesto,” by Ken White.

munity of Modesto in the agriculturally-rich San Joaquin Valley. Among those baseball greats were Willie Mays and Mickey Mantle; Yogi Berra and Willie McCovey, Whitey Ford and Juan Marichal; Orlando Cepeda and Gaylord Perry. Also on the practice field was Roger Maris, who had broken the major league batting record the year before. While Del Webb Field (now Thurman Field) held about 5,000 spectators, the crowd size was estimated at 16,000. Those who were there 56 years ago as children have never forgotten that day when two major league teams, playing the World Series in San Francisco, took a break during the storms of Typhoon Freda, and found a dry spot for batting practice 90 miles from Candlestick Park. Ken White, local author, whose book, “Getaway Day,” not only commemorates that special day in 1962 when the World Series briefly stopped in Modesto, but also uses it as the basis for a fictional story about a local young boy, Mikey Wright, who seeks a way for his ailing father to meet his baseball idol, Mickey Mantle. The story uses many of White’s own experiences growing up in a rural small town, and intertwines it with a sometimes funny, sometimes emotional, but always entertaining tale of love and devotion to family and the game of baseball. Along the way, in the comingof-age story, White focuses on a journey taken by his Mikey where he runs into many famous people who help encourage him in his quest, also imparting wisdom and advice that deepens the young-

ster’s commitment to achieving his goal. White’s book begins with the 2010 San Francisco Giants’ World Series Victory Parade that brought a million people into the city to celebrate the team’s first championship, as an adult Mikey shares the moment with his son. Then the story flashes back to 1962 in Modesto so that Mikey can tell the story that forever creates a bond between him and America’s pastime. It is a history lesson and an inspiration that makes one realize the impact love (and baseball) can have on a young person’s life. “Getaway Day” is a must for anyone who loves baseball, and especially for those of us who live in Modesto and can recall the day the World Series came to town. It is available at Yesterday’s Books in Modesto, online at Amazon, at Barnes and Noble and in the McHenry Museum and McHenry Mansion stores, as well as other booksellers.

There will be a book signing with Ken White and Dennis Snelling, author of several nonfiction books about baseball, on April 14 at Barnes and Noble in Modesto from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

GEEK May the Fourth

Be With You

By Middagh Goodwin Since 1977, “May the Force be With You” has been part of the global lexicon. This phrase, created by Modesto native George Lucas symbolizes the magic and influence of his epic film Star Wars, the follow-up film to his breakthrough American Graffiti. Just say “May the 4th Be With You” out loud and you will hear the pun that so many Star Wars fans worldwide have used to proclaim their love of the saga. “May the Force be with you” to all that celebrate Modesto’s best-known citizen George Lucas’s beloved Star Wars story is the phrase that binds us all together and is a message of hope for all, like peace or shalom. On May 3rd, 2016 an official proclamation was made by the City Council making May the Fourth Star Wars Day in Modesto. Last year marked the 40th Anniversary of Star Wars: A New Hope and we celebrated big in the 10th Street Plaza. A new tradition was born and this year Star Wars Day looks to be bigger and better. On Friday, May 4th 5 pm we will in the 10th Street Plaza once again celebrating all things

Star Wars. We have invited all the Fan Clubs to join us the 501st, Mandalorian Mercs, Saber Guild, Dark Empire, Astromech Builders and Rebel Legion. We have reached out to the NorCal Cosies and Central Valley Costumers to join us as well. We encourage you all to dress up as your favorite characters or just sport a Star Wars T-Shirt to show your love. Once again the Lodge Pole(Jedi) Pickers will be performing live and Laser Voodoo will be putting on a laser light show to thrill children of all ages. Fuzio and Ralston’s Goat will be doing speciality themed food and drinks. Brenden is working on another great movie to show(how fun was watching Space Balls on the big screen last year?) Along with all this, there will be a lifesize TieFighter and a lightsaber battle when the sun goes down. Bring your friends, your family, your kids and May the Force Be With You.

BLUES The Month Is Packed By Earl Matthews

Hello everyone, we have a month packed with fun stuff to do so let’s get to it. On the 5th Poorhouse Millionaires and friends are back at Ralston’s Goat for a fun night of local comedy and music. On the 6th you can catch Terrie Londee and the B-4 Dawn Band at the Oakdale Sports Bar for some great dance music. On the 7th you have a few options. During the day, starting at 11am you can catch Tony and the Tuff Times over at Cycle Specialties in Modesto. Up in Jamestown I will be playing with the Poorhouse Millionaires at the Rawhide. It’s a really fun spot with lot of space and great atmosphere. If you want some fun at an even higher altitude you can catch Gary Gervase & Kickstart Blues at Pine Mountain Lake Resort in Groveland. On the 11th I will be hosting my first Blues Jam at St. Stan’s in 11th st in Modesto. It should be a lot of fun. On the 13th in Mariposa you can catch one of my favorite local singers miss Tiffany Rose will be at the Hideout Saloon. Also on the 13th you can check out Fresno’s own AC

Miles doing his blues rock best. Great guy and if you are into Hendrix, AC is your guy. Sundays are always worth checking out at Ralston’s Goat these day but make double sure to head over on the 15th to check out Sol Riddim. They aren’t blues but they are a lot of fun and great musicians one and all. Jumping ahead to the 21st you have some options. The lodi Blues and Brews at the Lodi Event Center with a few bands including Jeramy Norris and the Dangerous Mood heading things up. Gary Gervase & Kickstart Blues at Barkin Dog, this will be a really fun show for sure. Or you can take a trip up Sac way and check out Big Earl and the Cryin’ Shame on the Sac River Beer Train. Gary Gervase & Kickstart Blues will be at Spring Creek in Ripon on the 26th. You could also consider heading up to Black Oak Casino that night and checking out SRV Experience with Catfish Daniels. I played with Catfish late last year and he is a monster blues rock guy. If you dig SRV, Jimi Hendrix or a little band called ZZ Top then Catfish is your Dude. On the 27 you can check out Two-Tone Steiny and the Cadillacs at Valley Brewing in Stockton. This concert series is a lot of fun and I have heard that this band is top notch too. Also on the 27th I will be at the 108 Sports Lounge in Riverbank with the Poorhouse Millionaires. We always have a good time out in the City of Action. Folks, I hope you have a great month. See you out at a show. Earl Matthews, (209)450-4141 bigearl@gmail.com

COMEDY Hello, hello, hello Welcome to the April edition of Comedy View. This month’s theme for the Modesto View is sports. As a comic, I will do my best to resist making any “kicking it into the basket for a home run” jokes. Have you been keeping up with my monthly interview videos, “Run the Light” on ModestoView.com? It only takes 10 minutes to meet a new comic, so check it out. This month’s video is with A.J. DeMello. A.J. is from Turlock and has been in comedy for about six years. He currently has a monthly show—Ha Sauce Comedy Delight at the Pizza Factory in Turlock and also produced the charity comedy show at Queen Bean for a few years. We talk about his writing discipline and how horror and comedy are similar. On the video, A.J. and my cameraman, Rocco, try to teach me to stop using “filler words”. I’ve got to stop it with the “umms” and “likes”, I never hear Oprah talk like that! If you’ve ever used a water spray bottle to try to keep your cat off the counter or your dog off the couch, then you’ll know what I’m talking about. This was a fun, damp episode. As usual, there is comedy

by Felicia Aleman stuff going on. Mark Noyer is doing his Stuck in Lodi Comedy Show on Thurs. April 5 at the Six Shooter Saloon in Lodi at 7 p.m. Anthony K will headline, Chris Teicheira will feature and the lineup is chock full of 209 comics (me included). No cover so get there early for a seat. Every first and third Tuesdays of the month is Cheroot Comedy run by Anthony Krayenhagen. 7:30 p.m. No cover. The first Thursday of every month is Poorhouse Millionaires and Friends at Ralston’s Goat music and comedy run by Earl Matthews and me. 8 p.m. No cover. The last Wednesday of every month is Comedy at the Outpost Saloon in Waterford. April 25. 8 p.m. Co-hosted by Jimmie Menezes and Felicia Aleman. No cover. April 11, Ha Sauce Comedy Delight at The Pizza Factory in Turlock 9 p.m., no cover. A.J. DeMello I may be jumping the gun a bit, but I am excited to be producing a Mom-edy show for Mother’s Day on Saturday, May 12. Tickets are $15 and details will follow soon. Hope to see you at a show!

Train Like A Frogman by Efren Martinez When we think of a frogman, most of us usually tie that with a Navy Seal. My comparison would be to train similar to one of these heroes if you’re a tri-athlete. Just recently I headed back to the Sea of Cortez for some winter open-ocean training. The ability to be able to master your swim, then run, can make or break you in a triathlon. In the past, I learned the hard way that after swimming a couple of miles in the open ocean, and then trying to run out of it, can be quite difficult. As it is, you’ve just swam 2 miles in the choppiest, sometimes coldest, water and you get to shore to instinctively run out to transition to your bike. The thing is, after you’ve swam such a distance, your body is still in swim mode and your legs are too. This is why so many tri-athletes come out of the water only to reach the shore and fall right on their face. Sometimes they twist a foot or even break a wrist. This will end your competition immediately. While I was in Cabo, I trained like a frogman using the inside parameter of my resorts buoys. First I’d start with a run on the shore where the first buoy started,

time my entry to the ocean with the waves, swim 100 yards out, then 450 yards across, 100 back in, only to practice running out of the water and running like heck 450 yards to where I started. After about 6 loops and a little over an over, you should have your body acclimated to be able to get out of the water very quickly and start your run without falling on your face. It’s an intense workout, but not nearly as much as my yearly swim across the Sea of Cortez to Lands End. It’s nearly a 3-mile swim, but the chop of the open ocean is what makes it extremely challenging. This year I tried something different, instead of swimming from the mainland to Lands End, I swam from Lands End to the mainland. I did it

an unbelievable time of 23:18 when it generally takes me 43 minutes to swim the opposite way. No, I don’t have any super powers like Aqua Man to be able to swim so fast. What helped me get to the main land this time was that I had the ocean’s current take me to shore externally fast. Honestly it really wasn’t that hard of a workout like I was expecting. I prefer to have more of a challenge because in competition, and especially in real life, challenges are part of the game. Regardless, I did have a great time and to celebrate my success my wife bought me some special frogman goggles as seen here. Train hard and have fun with it. Please Spay & Neuter your pets.

ALL AGES

There is a vast amount

of excitement and chaos towards the end of the school year. Though having a lot on your plate can be appealing, it is extremely important to take a step back and reflect on yourself! I consider April a month of rejuvenation. There are many ways that you can treat yourself to a break from daily chaos. One of the most rewarding things I have done for myself in 2018 was getting a massage at NTouch BodyWork & Healing Arts! From beginning to end, the experience was beyond authentic and professional. The hour long massage put me into pure bliss and I was able to think and reflect on my year so far. There’s no word to describe the experience other than tranquil. This local business also has yoga, facials, acupuncture and a wide variety of massages. Go to the website www.

By Leia Johnson ntouchbodywork.com and treat yourself some time to relax! It is also primarily important to take care of your body and mind by eating healthy! I am currently hooked on the Açaí Bowl scene in Modesto. Açaí Bowls are typically composed of a smoothie/yogurt-like blend of the açaí berry (from the Amazon), topped with fresh fruits, nuts, granola and sometimes even coconut or honey. At 2 of Yogurt Mill’s Modesto locations (Roseburg and Oakdale), they have recently added these yummy bowls to the menu. The locally owned food truck, The Refuel Center, has açaí bowls, smoothies, fruit cups and rice bowls!! Follow them on Facebook to stay updated with their location! There are so many other ways for you maintain a healthy mind! Be sure to spend time outside, listen to music, read, write and drink lots of water. I hope you all have a blessed April!

HEART

ZEN Fear of the unknown by Mary Layton Human nature is hungry for information and knowing stuff. We don’t do so well with the unknown. In the ancient world kings would go ask the advice of an oracle or gaze into a crystal ball to see the future. Today we ask Siri, Alexa or go on the internet. The more specific our questions, the more we learn about any given subject. The more we can find out ahead of time the more secure we feel. We can now find out and communicate moment to moment information about weather and road conditions. We can send pictures and emojis showing our location and emotional states. Thanks to Facebook and similar entities, we are traceable, no matter where we are in the world. We can let others know the moment our plane, bus or train has arrived, or whether we will be delayed.

But even though technology has given us greater certainty in some areas of our lives, fear of the unknown remains. No matter how much data we have on anything, the way things are actually going to play out in the end we do not know. The time of our birth and time and cause of death is a mystery. Fear of the unknown in a nutshell. We really have no other choice but to bow to it. In that way we stand where our ancestors once stood. For myself, rather than fighting I like the idea of embracing the fear of the unknown. It means that I have to learn to let go off my conditioning and become completely quiet in my mind. It is only then, in the absence of thought and information that I can hope to find the answers I seek. All forms of meditation lend themselves to learning to fall into this silence and to encounter the sacred. For more info go to : taichi4modesto.com or call (209)572-4518

By Chris Murphy

This time last year I had no idea that heart issues would be part of my life, but now they are. Fortunately, I did the research, got the help I needed and had a successful heart procedure that will hopefully get me back on track. That is why I am proud to be the Chair of the Leadership Committee for the local American Heart Association. It is my goal to promote heart healthy living and encourage our community to support these issues. Please join me in sponsoring or attending the Go Red For Women Luncheon on May 4 at the Modesto Center Plaza featuring Kendall Wesenberg, our April InterView as keynote speaker. Hope to see you there. Check out www.ModestoGoRedLuncheon.Heart.org for more info and tix.
