I feel like I am scurrying to everything. Do you feel the same way? Spring is most definitely springing as we race from thing to thing, event to event and place to place. It’s like we are the squirrels running through the trees. You can feel it in the air, no matter where you go, there is a buzz, things are happening, more bikes on the bike trails, there are more people walking downtown, more places are open for breakfast and more patios have musicians and like the busy bees, those crafty pollinators, everyone is exploring and getting things ready for the nice weather. Like they say, April showers bring May flowers, and here in ModestoUSA, it is especially true this year. We can celebrate our amazing planet and learn amore about how we protect it at Earth Day on April 20. This is also the time for sharpening our tools and repairing our homes or businesses. It seems like we have a short window of

Remembering

time for the pruning, chopping, trimming, fixing, power washing, cleaning and waxing the tools in our sheds, whether it is something physical or even if it is mental. We need to take time to prepare and get ready so things work right, because once May hits, it is a high speed roller coaster ride until winter. This month is really important for more reasons that really make a difference to the community. ModestoView is so proud to be a long-time supporter of Love Modesto and the community wide event on April 13 has something for everyone. If you volunteer all the time, or if this is your first volunteer experience, it is so easy to lend a hand on Love Modesto. I hope to see you there. The volunteer spirit truly makes the greater Modesto area something special. There are others that really need your help in the most personal ways. I, my family and the ModestoView and Sierra Pacific Warehouse Group crews will be walking a Mile in Her Shoes on April 6. We absolutely must stand tall against domestic violence and spousal abuse. The Haven Women’s Center offers a safe refuge for so

many when they are at their weakest. As a husband and a father of two amazing daughters, it is important that the men in our community embrace the importance of this issue. Please help us raise funds by donating to our team by clicking the “Donate” button on www.modestoview.com Finally, we end this month with Go Red For Women luncheon and I am happy to report that with the great work from our medical community, that my heart is functioning great and I am so happy to be able to support the great work of the American Heart Association. I hope your April is fantastic. I wish you special times with your family and friends and hope you enjoy every fast moving minute. I hope to see you out and about and please let me know what you like about ModestoView, and even what you don’t like so we can make it better. ModestoView is the best way to reach the best people in our community so I really appreciate you being here. Thank you, Chris Murphy Publisher and Founder, ModestoView chrism@modestoview.com PS. Porchfest is coming May 19th. Put it on your calendar. Our house will be on the map with 5 bands so check it out. It is free and fun. www.modestoporchfest.com/

David Bradford

On the cover

Modesto lost one of the pillars of our community on March 2, 2019. David Bradford suddenly passed away while on vacation in San Diego where he was with his wife Marsh and daughter Adele. The Bradford family has always been a big part of Modesto and David was an amazing volunteer, friend to so many, shared his talents with so many. Most knew him as the Word of Mouth baker/owner, and for the recent years could be seen cooking at the Modesto Famer’s Market, clapping and singing in the front row of MoBand, creating amazing treats for fundraisers and so much more. Modesto lost a true treasure and a true friend. He will be

missed by many but the memories and friendships will live on and his volunteer spirit will inspire us. People like David Bradford are what make our community so special. By Chris Murphy

It takes a village of powerful women to change the course of the world, and fortunately we have some of our future leaders here in Modesto. These amazing girls from Girl Scout Troop 1639 lead by Janelle Shanks Haney are holding the entire earth in their hands. Why? It’s because they are the future and it is up to us to leave it in good shape for them. Thanks to Michael J Mangano for bringing this to life. Left to right: Zefyra Mazuelos, Maev Gianelli. The county libraries are funded through a dedicated 1/8th-cent countywide sales tax that provides almost 90% of funding for the libraries. “The Friends help close the gap,” says Friends of the Modesto Library President Denise Nordell. “Without us, it would be difficult for the Modesto library to offer some of its most popular programs.” How can you get involved? First, join the Friends – annual memberships begin at just $25 – or make a donation at modestolibraryfiends.org. There, you will also find

Raising Funds, Friends and Awareness for the Modesto Library

By Maree Hawkins, Friends of the Modesto Library “The only thing that you absolutely have to know is the location of the library.” – Albert Einstein Even in today’s increasingly digital society, the local library remains a place of excitement, learning and inclusion. Yes, many library materials – eBooks, language programs, magazines, even movies – are available online, without stepping foot into the brick and mortar downtown library. But regardless of how you “visit” and use it, the local library is a vital part of a vibrant community. Organized in 1974, The Friends of the Modesto Library exists solely to support the library’s mission and Modesto’s downtown library. In particular, we focus on programs that engage young readers. This year alone, the Friends will give financial support to the annual Harry Potter Yule Ball, the local appearance of author Linda Joy Singleton, Diá del los Niños/de los Libros, Imagination Library and the free book giveaway at the Stanislaus County Fair. Many of these programs would not exist without Friends

of the Library support. But true friends also get together to have fun and share in a common purpose, and we do that, too. Volunteer opportunities abound for Friends members: we participate in the Annual Used Book Sale (our primary fundraiser), as well as Scholastic Book Sales that yield money and books for the library. We help out at library events and programs like the annual Halloween Parade and Readto-a-Dog programs. The Modesto Friends also raises money through annual memberships; donations from individuals, businesses such as Alfred Matthews and American Chevrolet; and local organizations like Omega Nu. Donations are often given in honor of a friend or loved one or in memory of some who has died. Most people know that the Modesto Library

NON-PROFIT VIEW Walk a Mile for Haven We have no use for spousal abuse. This is something that we all must stand up against and prevent sexual abuse of any kind. We must support those that protect our most vulnerable in our community. The Haven Women’s Center does work that is literally life saving in the most dangerous times. Women need a safe place to get away and feel safe. This is why Sierra Pacific and ModestoView are Walking a Mile in Her Shoes. Men from all walks of life will be wearing bright red pumps to show solidarity that we have no use for abuse. The ModestoView Team will be out walking to raise money for Haven. We hope that you will dig down deep and support our team. We will be walking Saturday morning, April 6. Please make a quick contribution so we can make a difference. HEART VIEW By Chris Murphy This time last year I had no idea that heart issues

would be part of my life, but now they are. Fortunately, I did the research, got the help I needed and had a successful heart procedure that will hopefully get me back on track. That is why I am proud to be the Chair of the Leadership Committee for the local American Heart Association. It is my goal to promote heart healthy living and encourage our community to support these issues. Please join me in sponsoring or attending the Go Red For Women Luncheon on April 26 at the Modesto Center Plaza featuring keynote speaker Dr. Stephen Noble, Cardiothoracic Surgeon, Gould Medical Group Hope to see you there. ART VIEW By Jim Christiansen April showers us with Earth Day, Open

Studio, Art Walk, and more. In my case, its time to build new walls around my new carport art studio. Having to move recently, I am showing my art at Moon and Sixpence for the Stanislaus Artist Open Studio April 6 and 7, with Anne Whitman. Aaron Rowan adding some music to the mix, and we are stop number 6, and first in the Modesto line up for the 2019 Open Studio weekend. Maps on sale for $10, 18 and under in free with adult, this is the annual self-guided tour of Stanislaus County artist studios, and partner venues, from Turlock, through Ceres and Modesto, out to Riverbank and Oakdale. 53 artists in all this year, 29 stops. Good to pick up a map in advance and plan your route. Each map lists the artist, sampling of their work. For those of you seeking maps the day of the event, Moon and Sixpence will have maps available. Nearby Artist Studio downtown is The Artist Loft with Nicole Slater. Art is for sale most locations, demonstrations and a chance to meet the artists outside the gallery setting. Enjoy Open Studio weekend and support local artists. The Third Thursday Art Walk is back on April 18. Check out the venues on the map and look for the artists on the 11th Street area, with music sponsored by Modesto View. The Carolyn Huff Photography and Gallery on K street always has a show, and Still Smoking hosts quite a number of artists for Art Walk. TriChromatic Gallery has regular classes and Writer’s Workshop during the month, and always a display, often demonstrations during Art Walk and Betty Kenny and friends have a display at 11th & J. Downtown Market is back with First Fridays, vendors in arts, crafts on the Tenth Street Art Block. Speaking of Fridays, check out the music offerings at Dragonfly Art for Life Gallery for their Friday night music series in the gallery. It is Paint & Pour Saturdays at Dragonfly happening all day. The Gallery is a membership working studio gallery. Last month’s inaugural Grace Lieberman music cabaret series at Mistlin Gallery was a sold-out success. Look up their schedule on their new web page at https://ccaagallery.org/events-at-mistlingallery/ This month, Mistlin will display a special Members up close and personal, “Meet the Artists.” In May, Mistlin is hosting an Open Show for members and nonmembers, “Flowers and Still Life.” Pick up a prospectus at the gallery. BREW VIEW

STAR WARS VIEW

By Middagh Goodwin

By Brandilyn Brown and Christopher Mitchell

Modesto couple Adam Soares and

Allison Dowdy recently opened Blades and Bottles: a two-story combo saloon and salon, in the heart of downtown. The project combines Adam’s and Allison’s passions of hair cutting and bartending to create something truly unique in the area. It has a throw-back 1920’s feel-very sleek and swanky. It’s the bees knees, bub! So set aside your heebie-jeebies, put on your glad rags (and feel free to leave your high-hats at home): with plenty of bar seating but also posh sofas and high seat tables: you will find somewhere to relax and let loose in this spot. We happened to be in on the same day as the St. Paddy’s bike crawl, so this place was hoppin’! Music was pumpin’ and the drinks were slammin’. When we say this is a full bar, we mean FULL BAR: whiskey, gin, bourbon, tequila, wine, all the juices, all the garnishments-and if they don’t have your favorite local brew on tap, ask about it in a bottle because they might just have it! Allison even made my

8

preggers-self a mocktail to enjoy during Mitchell’s trim-which made me feel super special! Mr. Mitchell started with a Blaker Vanilla Bean stout, then went upstairs to get a beard trim & shape by the fabulous Nicolette Leasure. He was truly pampered and loved the final product! Then he finished his beer and ordered a delicious oldfashioned. Follow them on Facebook so you’ll know all about their live music nights and comedy nights-they’ve got quite a few events on the calendar that you won’t want to miss. Blades and Bottles

1012 15th St, Modesto (209) 566-9761 Bar hours: 9am to 10pm, Tues & Wed. 9am to 1:30am Thursday through Saturday. Closed Monday & Sunday. Salon hours: 9am to 8pm Tuesday through Saturday. (Walk-ins welcome, but appointments recommended. Anyone under 21 can still come in and get a haircut during these hours!)

All over the world, Star Wars will be on everyone’s mind on May 4th. This is a special day here in Modesto USA where we are the #homeofstarwars Yes, friends, this is our day and we are going to celebrate and bring the action to 10th St Plaza. Bring the whole family and join the Northern California Star Wars community to celebrate May the 4th in Downtown Modesto. We have invited the 501st Squadron, Central Valley Cosplayers, the Wolves of Mandalore and the Rebel Legion to join us at this event and the LodgePole Pickers will go full Jedi for their music in the plaza. You won’t want to miss the lightsaber battles and the light show by Laser Voodoo. Everyone is encouraged to cosplay as their favorite Star Wars characters. The celebration begins at 3 pm, with the Lodgepole Pickers going on at 6. We

will have a public reading of the Modesto proclamation. Beyer High School Band will perform the music of John Williams. Around 8 pm an epic battle lightsaber battle will be waged. Afterwards, there will be more Jedi Lodge Pole Picker Music. This is a FREE event. The original Star Wars movie was released May 25, 1977, a day that changed modern film forever. From the opening theme and the rolling script, the world had a new lexicon of interstellar characters, starships and even speed measurements. In as little as a few parsecs, this film propelled Modesto native George Lucas into Hyperspace of film fame. There will be special Star Wars food and drink specials at Fuzio, Ralston’s Goat, T-Cups, and Graffiti Dogs. Make sure you like the May the 4th Facebook page to stay up to speed. @maythefourthmodesto #homeofstarwars #homeofGeorgeLucas #homeofAmericanGraffiti

To Kill a Mockingbird, Hamilton, Wicked, The Wizard of Oz and so many more became staged plays. One of my favorite books, Tuesdays with Morrie, is coming to the Gallo this month. I suggest reading the book first before seeing the show. The two actors, Jim Johnson and Colton Dennis, have been on the local theater scene for many years. INTER VIEW The Great Valley Museum Showcases Earth and MORE This month the View Crew is partnering up with organizations and events to promote Earth Day. The City of Modesto leads the way in appreciating and preserving our little piece of this beautiful planet. With all the focus on Earth Day this month I got to thinking; what about all the other planets? Then I remembered that we have a truly amazing, state of the art Planetarium right here in our city at the Modesto Junior College West Campus! The Planetarium is part of the Great Valley Museum, which has been serving the people of our community for over 40 years. I decided to invite the Director of the Great Valley Museum, Arnold Chavez on the ModestoNews.com Radio Show to get the scoop on the Planetarium. The William R. Luebke Planetarium is not only used for fun but is a really powerful tool being used to educate the scientists of tomorrow. “We have a very powerful Zeiss Skymaster ZKP4 that allows us to essentially turn the dome into the night sky,” Director Chavez explained, “So when the astronomy classes want to do some observations in the day, they just go into the planetarium and pull up the night sky. They can pull up and observe the sky from any location and any time past or present.” In addition to the star projection system the Planetarium offers several different shows. You’ll often find students of all ages on school field trips to the museum being inspired by these entertaining and educational feats of technology. These shows are also available to the general public on Saturdays at 11am and 1pm, as well as the first Friday of every month at 7:30 pm and 8:30 pm. The cost is $4- for children ages 4-12, $6- for adults, and $5for seniors and students. The first Friday of every month is the Museum’s Science Night. I asked Director Chavez what the most fun part of Science Night is, “The most fun thing about Science Night is that the astronomy club will come out and set up their telescopes on the roof so there’s free telescope viewing for the kids.” Now the Great Valley Museum offers a lot more than the planetarium and they’ve grown quite a bit over the last few years. Most of us locals remember the museum when it was located at the MJC East Campus. When I was a kid I remember being quite impressed with the building that

held all the taxidermy. I asked Director Chavez about the collection and he explained “The museum started with a large taxidermy collection from local businessman Maurits Osterberg (1896~1988) in the early 70’s”, Chavez continued, “I assume you remember the Polar Bear and the large Kodiak Brown Bear? Those two, we like to refer to them as our security guards because they’re now at the front of our museum when you walk in.” I recalled that the old location showcased live animals as well. I asked the Director about the live animals at the museum, “We have over two dozen live animals. We have those in our Discovery Room behind glass. We have various snakes and tarantulas. We recently just picked up a Whipless Scorpion which is really cool.” One thing that I always enjoyed about the museum growing up was the hands-on activities. I asked Director Chavez if the new museum continues this, “We have a Discovery Room which has hands on activities so we like to tell our guests, ‘once you pass that barrier you can touch away!’” I asked Director Chavez what one of his favorite exhibits is, “One of the big pieces we have is Science on a Sphere,” Director Chavez continued, “It is a six foot carbon fiber sphere suspended from the ceiling that has four projectors in every corner of the room that projects an image on it. 30th Annual Earth Day Park Festival A community supported event, keep it growing! History of Earth Day

Earth Day’s overall purpose is to raise awareness about the environmental challenges we face on a local and global level and inspire people to take action and pledge to be good stewards of the environment. Earth Day events date back to the early 1970’s. This historic day of celebration began when U.S. Senator and environmental activist Gaylord Nelson set out to create an event that would have widespread support regarding environmental issues facing our great nation. Because of his vision, there were Earth Day events across the country on April 22. People held events at college, university and school campuses. They gathered in parks and neighborhoods to express their concerns and offer solutions. Collectively, they shared their ideas about catastrophic oil spills, toxic dumps, raw sewage and how those events impacted our oceans and wildlife. They spoke of the air pollution coming from industrial factories and power plants and how that affected our air quality and accentually our human rights. It was this beginning over 40 years ago that cleared the path to some very important laws passed by Congress which include the Clean Air Act, Safe Drinking Water Act and clean Waste Act. In addition, the Environmental Protection Agency was established. Today, more than ever we need to celebrate Earth Day each and every day. It should be everyone’s personal responsibility to protect the environment. We are faced with issues like global warming, overpopulation, declining natural resources and pollution in the air, water and land. We have become a society dependent on consumer products that are disposable rather than reusable. We need to adopt the environmental 3R’: Reduce-ReuseRecycle as part of our lifestyle. “Reduce” simply means use less. Think long and hard if you really need it. Maybe it is something you can rent or borrow instead of purchase, especially if it has limit use. “Reuse” takes some planning. Instead of throwing something away or recycling it, look for other possibilities for use. Obvious examples are selling your used car that becomes someone’s new means of transportation, or utilizing glass jars that once had food products to store leftovers in. “Recycle” is seen everywhere. We recycle aluminum cans and plastic and glass bottles. We recycling cardboard, newspaper and more currently we are processing organic waste for composting. Every community is different and it is important to learn all the ways your community recycles. For Modesto, www.modestogov.com/370/garbage-recycling.com

Green Planet & Earth Day

We may have a lot of cars, many shoes and some people have two or three houses, but we only have one planet. There is no plan B, other place to be so that means we really have to take care of what we have, and treat our earth as if it is the only one we have, because it is. There is something that every single person can do to make a positive difference to our environment. One more bike ride, solar panels on you home or workplace, using less plastic bags, combining your errands into one trip. The solutions are endless and in the most case pretty easy. We just need to break our habits, walk a bit more, ride share a bit more and think twice about what we buy and throw away. Our kids have this figured out already and now we own them some basic effort. Thanks to all of you that are doing more than their share, and we hope that each of you will take small steps to make a difference. I hope you will join ModestoView, the City of Modesto and many of our great green-conscious organizations at Earth Day on April 20 at Graceada Park from 10am to 4 pm. There are tons of great ideas and even fun things for kids here. Enjoy and Go Green!

City of Modesto’s Earth Day Festival

Modesto’s 30th Annual Earth Day in the Park Festival is a long-standing tradition for residents of Modesto and surrounding communities. Event organizers are the City of Modesto and its many partners. It is a unique opportunity to learn about the environment and local community organizations in a family-friendly atmosphere. There are over 90 exhibitors showcasing their products and detailing what they are doing to help make our community be a vibrant place to live, work and play. They come prepared to answer the public’s questions not only about what they are doing to protect the environment but also to suggest how people can contribute on a personal level. Vendors are enthusiastic and engaging and are prepared to discuss topics on solar power, energy rebates, water conversation, recycled oil, composting and recycling. It’s an entire day of “green education”, free entertainment, delicious food, interactive play and arts and crafts for all ages. This year, the City of Modesto’s Transit Department is offering Free MAX Bus rides to Earth Day. All you have to do is mention Earth Day and Catch a Ride! Always an important part of any Earth Day event is the opportunity to recycle on-site. Fortunately for all of us, the O B-Green Recycling Event sponsored by O’Brien’s Market will be accepting electronic waste & CRV recycling as well as offer FREE paper shredding. This is a drive-through/drop off event on Stoddard Avenue at Graceada Park. All proceed benefit the Adopt-A-Park Program, specifically The Awesome Spot Project and are matched dollar-for-dollar by O’Brien’s Market. In addition, the Hope Chest Thrift Store will have a truck accepting household donations in support of their Hospice Outreach Program. The Solid Waste Information Booth #45 will be accepting eye glasses in support of the Lion’s In Site organization. The City of Modesto could not hold this event without our generous sponsors and volunteers whose contributions make this event possible. For more Earth Day information, contact Vicki Rice at (209) 577-5495 or www.modetogov.com/earthday. Bring your family and friends and help us celebrate 30 years of making our community a greener place in which to live and work.

perform and ideally in new cities and stages while you continue to build your fanbase in familiar haunts. You can always ask your fans where they think you should be performing at, a new venue or festival may have popped up since the last time you were in town. Remember to ask for local press contacts whenever you book an event. Send your press kit(including current photo) and always follow up a few weeks out if you have not heard back. You can also go online and submit your shows to local papers and entertainment monthlies to be included in the calendar. Following these few easy steps regularly will help increase your fanbase, visibility and performance opportunities and in turn your guarantee for performing. Isn’t that the end goal to play in front of more people and get paid for it? Good luck and looking forward to seeing as much live entertainment and hearing about our local bands doing bigger and better things. I encourage you to go out, see a new band or performer, and remember music is best enjoyed live and with a group of friends.

By Middagh Goodwin It is officially Spring and time to do some proverbial “spring cleaning”. Go through your merch and see what needs to be replenished or replaced with something fresh. Make plans to record a new song or go out and shoot a new video, even if it is just an excellent multi-camera live performance. Take a new promo picture and update your EPK, Facebook, Plink or Reverbnation page. It is essential to have new content regularly not just for your fans but for bookers and promoters and press as well. You do not want someone using a photo from years ago with your old bassist, and you look like you used a can of Aquanet to put your hair up. This happens more often than you would imagine. If you have a mailing list, it is an excellent time to send out a thank you to your fans and more importantly to clubs and bookers you have worked with over the last year. This way you keep yourselves on their radar. Make sure you reach out to new venues and promoters expand your tour radius. With warmer weather comes more opportunities to get out and

APRIL 2019

SONGWRITING VIEW Bloom where you are planted. An excellent friend of mine has always reminded me of this. Just because we do not reside in Los Angeles, New York or Nashville does not mean we cannot create art on an unparalleled level and find success on the map. Modesto touts itself as the birthplace of Rockabilly with the footprints of The Maddox Brothers and Rose to prove it. You need not to travel far to find supreme offerings of music in every genre at your fingertips. Do your research, make your plans and support the local scene. Deva Cafe has Saturday Live Music Matinees from 10 am to 1 pm year round, and April gives us pure Girl Power with The Ava Grace Trio on 4/6 and 4/20 and newcomer Liz Krulder on 4/13 and 4/27. Sunday Breakfast Music will feature the Acoustic Travelers on 4/14 and Josh Davenport on 4/28. The ModestoView outdoor Stage returns for the Third Thursday Art Walk on 4/18 located at 11th and J St. with the Patty Castillo Davis Band. The Modesto Certified Farmer’s Market is in full Spring swing and has great music every Thursday and Saturday from 9 am to noon.

Alameda Allstars Spring into action, my friends. The weather is nice and you should be out in it listening to all these great bands. The don’t miss show of the month is going to be Rick Estrin and the Night Cats at Moe’s Alley in Santa Cruz. These guys are an award-winning, show-stopping, knock you off your seat band that everyone should see at least once. The music is nuts and the lyrics are funny and heartfelt. I can’t sell you hard enough on this amazing west coast treasure. Now to give you the highlights of the rests of the month, please keep in mind that every show I could find will be in the main calendar for you. On April 5th you can catch Gregg Allman’s former touring band the Alameda Allstars at Black Oak Casino. That same night the Sonhouse Blues and Gospel Band will be at the Barkin’ Dog Grill in Downtown Modesto

Did you know that the Brave Bull is doing live music? Now you do and on the 13th you can check out two Modesto originals, Rob Hill will be opening as an acoustic duo for Chris “Tractor Boy” Ward. It’s going to be a party ya’ll. Buddy Guy is Back at the Crest Theater in Sacramento on the 14th with Christone “Kingfish” Ingram. The latter of which I am told is the next king of Blues guitar. So if you go, arrive on time and catch that opener. AC Miles, one of Fresno’s baddest guitar slingers is heading to Black Oak on the 18th. He puts on a hell of a show for you Bluesrock lovers. Big Earl’s (me) Blues Jam is happening again at Fired Up Grill in Ceres in the 24th. Come out, bring your axe and let’s jam it up. ON the 27th and 28th the Hughson Fruit and Nut Festival is back with live music all day and activities for the whole family. I will be there with the Poorhouse Millionaires on Sunday the 28th for most of the afternoon. Wel.l that is April and as I told you I was not fooling that there are some amazing Blues shows to go out to this month.

There’s a spider in your hair…April Fools. Did I get you? Somewhere second graders are falling for these classics. Because of this, I’ve decided to go back to the old days and momentous dates in history. April 1, 1778, is acknowledged as the date of the invention of the dollar sign. Many people believe the dollar sign derives from 8 for pieces of eight, however it is actually a combination of “Ps” for peso. Luckily, the dollar sign caught on otherwise we’d still be using the chicken symbol of our bartering predecessors. It is April 5, 1930, and you want a snack. Maybe a Twinkie? Too bad! Twinkies debuted April 6, 1930. Urban legend has it that Twinkies last 50 years. This is untrue. No one can resist eating a Twinkie for 50 years. In 1912 the Titanic began its tragic voyage April 10 and by April 15 sunk after striking an iceberg. For those who have grown up in the era of climate change and may not be familiar, an iceberg is a chunk of ice so huge it can sink a ship put together with parts and labor provided by the lowest bidders. So…are there shows this month? Why of course. Every Wednesday is an open mic in Stock-

By Felicia Aleman ton at Finnegan’s hosted by Saul Trujillo. Word is, a comedian performed and everyone ignored him. The next week he was the clip of the day on Comedy Central. April 9th is Fired Up Grill Open Mic and Comedy Showcase run by me. Comics show up to get some practice in, then we bring on the showcase of 3 of the best comics in the area. First and third Tuesdays are the Cheroot Comedy night and Second and Fourth at Blades & Bottles run by Anthony K. The lineup is never announced prior but never fails to deliver. Jimmie Menezes has a new show at The Gameroom in Sonora. April 19. $5 cover not only gets you in but gives you access to table games like ping pong, billiards and shuffleboard. April 24th at the Outpost Saloon in Waterford Jimmie Menezes brings Comedy at the Outpost Saloon. No cover and drink specials. April 25 is Comedy Night at Famiglia Bistro hosted by Roman Guzman. Ngaio Bealum from Netflix will headline. Going to sell out--you’ve been warned Happy April! I’ll be working on my taxes.

50th Anniversary! Come visit and get the Holy Land experience.

You can purchase tickets to drawing to win a $5000 gift certificate toward a trip to Israel. One drawing ticket free with event purchase. Jewish cultural food bake sale, local vendors, lox & bagels, cocktails Anne’s Famous Kugel, fresh strawberries, Israel’s famous Salsa, live entertainment and more.

Since 2004 I’ve been in and out of various gyms with always electing my home gym to be the best. Why not? It’s at my convenience in my home with a Spa/lap pool, treadmill, spin bike, elliptical, loads of free weights and a DJ Studio 54 flair. What it does lack is the variety of leg exercise machines. In January I started to focus on leaning down for the Triathlon season. Needing some additional work on developing my legs I decided to check out Planet Fitness. It’s been a pleasurable experience. The gym has more than I need, but I use it all. I love it! For a fellow who thrives on living the healthiest lifestyle, I can’t help but feel like a kid in a candy store when I enter Planet Fitness. One of the first things that got my attention was the continuous cleaning and disinfecting they do. Sweeping, dusting, vacuuming and lifting the exercise machines one by one to clean even under the hardest to reach places. This is extremely important to me. Gyms can be a very germ infected place If it’s not kept up with continuous cleaning. I personally don’t have time for a cold to infect my body. Another plus is that the staff is extremely friendly. Saying hello when you arrive and wishing you a good day on your way out. I personally don’t like to be bothered while I’m working out and I’m not alone. Many of the club members stick to their own workouts

and focus on getting it done. It’s not a social hub and I like that. This gym is for people seriously looking to get their healthy lifestyle in, on and out. They do have a lounge with relaxing zones for people. Although I personally don’t use them it’s nice they have that too. Other positives are the equipment is state of the art if it breaks down it’s generally fixed within 24 hours and I’ve never had to wait for an exercise machine there are more than enough to go around. At Planet Fitness they have plenty of parking, free wifi and personal training sessions for those who like that. Honestly, it’s the best gym for me, and the only thing I’d add if I were the boss is to have air fresheners in the men’s locker room. That’s definitely “a good place for a stickup.” Of course, I love my home Gym but joining Planet Fitness gives me that extra plus of training I needed. Being a house husband, who only works on the weekends, going to the gym helps break up my day. My wife refers to it as my Daddy Day Care and notices that it makes me an even happier kind of person. As I said, I’m like a kid in a candy store when I walk into gyms, health food stores and see an open ocean to swim in. I love it!

Happy Spring Modesto!

World T’ai Chi Day

By Sofia Johnson

by Mary Layton

Happy Spring Modesto! We kicked off the season with some beautiful sunny days as well as some beautiful rainy ones. The best way to enjoy this weather is to get outside of course. The most exciting event coming up this month, I believe, is Earth Day at Graceada Park on the 20th! There will be games, local vendors, businesses, and clubs. This is the perfect all ages event. ModestoView will have a kids coloring booth there too. With this season also comes spring clean-

ing. If you are not sure what to do with the items you do not want anymore here are some ideas. First, your old clothes and household items can go to local thrift stores such as Hope Chest which has two locations, both on McHenry, and benefits Community Hospice. The Salvation Army has a truck also located on McHenry Avenue and is another great place to contribute to. Any old books can be given to My Little Libraries which have been popping up all over many neighborhoods. Also, animal rescue organizations such as Pupz and Palz are looking for used and clean, dog beds or blankets as well as newspapers and they have a collection bin right inside of Petco on Evergreen @ Briggsmore. Stanislaus Wildlife Care Center is also looking for items such as paper towels, puppy pads, used receiving blankets, Kleenex (for bird nests) and Dawn dishwashing liquid. They will even be having a baby animal shower event on April 6th which would be a perfect time to bring these donations in. Help out our furry little friends and our wonderful community this April

World T’ai Chi Day is observed on Satur-

day, April 27th, 10 am local time, worldwide. What is T’ai Chi? T’ai Chi, also called T’ai Chi Ch’uan , combines deep breathing and relaxation exercises with flowing, circular movements. Originally developed as a martial art in China in the 13th century, T’ai Chi is now practiced around the world as a health-promoting exercise. It can be practiced on many levels, as a moving meditation or as a martial art. World T’ai Chi Day was founded in 1999 by Bill Douglas who teaches T’ai Chi meditation for Medical centers and major corporations in Kansas City. Since then World T’ai Chi Day has been observed every year on the last Saturday in April. Reading up on the history of this day, I found that World T’ai Chi Day “has been officially proclaimed by Presi-

dents, Congresses and public officials worldwide, including governors of 22 states, the senates of New York and California, Puerto Rico, the Brazilian National Congress, by consulates and embassies from Italy to the US, China to India.” People come together to practice this art in 100s of cities, spanning 80 nations. The purpose is to inspire and educate the world of the profound health and healing benefits of T’ai Chi. World T’ai Chi Day is more than merely a celebration of an ancient art. It provides a healing vision of our world. It brings together people from all walks of life, young and old, strong and weak. To us as T’ai Chi practitioners, it is profound to see photos and videos of large groups of people around the globe moving in unison, stepping gently and gracefully at the same time. It creates a unique and peaceful feeling. If you like to have your own T’ai Chi experience go to taichi4modesto.com or call (209)572-4518

Call out for Legends!

Modesto USA is the home of American Graffiti and the streets of 10th and 11th were the home of the stories captured in George Lucas’ legendary film American Graffiti. The Modesto Cruise Route tells the stories of the people and places that inspired the film and the Legends of the Cruise Walk of Fame is in 10th St Plaza. Do you know someone that should be memorialized on the Walk of Fame? Send me your nomination for the Legends to review. Walk of Fame 2019 ceremony will be July 5 at 6 pm. www.modestocruiseroute.com
