Spring officially started on March 20, but it feels like a totally different spring this year. The blooms, blossoms and the unfolding of our community that has been packed away in so many different format are starting to come to life. As so many have been sheltered for so long, this progressive reopening seem a bit more vivid, as if we are unlocking a series of doors and cautiously passing through each one, hoping that the door doesn’t slam back in our face. But this may be the month. If we are smart we can do this. We can take the good things we have learned during the last year and blend them with the things we miss the most. As I write this, the movie theatres are planning on opening in town. Our friends at the Brenden Theatre will be open by the first and the State Theatre will be open on the April 9th. This is exciting to see this happen. Hopefully we will continue on this trend are we will see the return of live music to our streets and sidewalks as our local restaurants open up. Our local musicians have been sitting this out, doing as many webcasts on Facebook as possible and trying to stay in it through on-line tips and support. The return of live music is magic for me, and it has been so good to be making music with my friends and actually playing to real people. I know that people have their own level of safety and that this will be slow process, and perhaps that is good. We do not want to treat this like spring break in Florida and we need to do this right. If we do, we can help our community come back safe, sound and smarter. I’ll say it once and I’ll say it again. Get a vaccine. I have received my two shots and I did

Chris, Abigail and Madison – 2018 at the same spot just fine. My family is vaccinated and I am working hard to get all of my employees vaccinated as they have been on the front lines of this for the last year. The vaccine was the key for me to be able to hang out with my grandbaby and I am sure you have your own personal reasons to get it. These are the moments and the reasons that we do these things. You get your vaccine not only for yourself, but also for your family, friends and co-workers. One thing we have learned through the last year, it is not just all about yourself. I have to say that I am shocked how many people still don’t believe in the vaccine despite mountains of scientific evidence that it is safe. We all have to keep spreading the word to get this done. This is a special month for me. I am not normally tuned in to how old I am, but turning 60 is a milestone. If you didn’t know, I was born in Yosemite. I have always had a fascination with Yosemite and this month, we explore the fact that you can actually see Half Dome from here and you can see it on one of my regular drives to work when it is clear. This month will be a beautiful month to visit Yosemite and I will be making a trip there myself visiting the exact spot. I visited there with my girls a few years ago and took a picture in the same place where my mom stood with me 60 years ago. Crazy huh? So let’s keep rockin’ & rolling as it keeps us all young. Thank you to the local businesses that stuck with us through this time and I hope
Chris and Jamie that you are happy that we stuck with all of you. I know times have been tough and we have continued to promote our local business and we operated at a loss but still continued our mission to support our local friends. We were there for you and thank you now for being with us and many thanks to those who stuck with us through this pandemic. Also, huge thank you Pete Grimaldi. Every month, he puts ModestoView together like the total professional that he is. Nothing fazes him as we through curveballs at him, scribble out new layouts and handles it like an ace and we continue to win design awards for his work. Thanks Pete and thanks for sticking with us even though you officially “retired”. Thanks to you all and I hope that you all open up and explore this new world safely and smartly. See you out and about, Chris Murphy Publisher and Founder ModestoView chrism@modestoview.com

Modesto has some of the coolest parks because of the many neighborhoods that get together to make sure we make parks a priority. A couple of new parks have opened, most recently the East LaLoma Park with a cool new climbing structure. This new structure doubled for El Capitan this month as our intrepid climber Brooke Barber gets ready to reach the summit. It is so great that we are making quality kids places a priority for kids like Brooke and Matthew to enjoy. Thanks also to their parents Jake and Katie Barber for all they do to make our community better.

DRIVE-IN VIEW
Going to the drivedrive-in is fun!
By Chris Murphy It has always been fun since the invention of the drive in way back in the day. This time, the drive in made a big comeback due to the COVID and this is one of the pandemic trends that we hope will stay. My friend Mark Stotzer of Lucky Shoe Productions, reopened the iconic Ceres Drive last year with with his production team, largely on hiatus due to the mass cancellation of large events. They installed a monster digital projection system, remodeled the restrooms, snack bar and facilities and now it is a full service Drive in, offering 1st run movies. Going to the drive in could not get any easier. You don’t have to get dressed up and just get the kids in the car. 1) Bought my ticket on line with a scan code 2) checked in before dusk 3) found my own 12’ space and backed in 4) Hit the snack bar and got delicious popcorn, hot dog, ice cream bar and a soda 5) popped my hatch back 6) turned my car radio to 106.7 and it was show time on the giant 100’ screen. The best part of this was seeing all of the families and kids,

people had their folding chairs all set up, kids in the back of pick up beds. There were also traditional daters sitting in the front seat and as the sun went down, the screen lit up for Tom and Jerry and the new Disney Film Raya and the Last Dragon. Everyone was having a great time, the sound is better running through your car’s system and it was a perfect evening. The popcorn was great, the prices were right and this is something that should continue in the future. Fortunately many others have been enjoying the Ceres Cruise In and the theatre has been ranked in the top of all theatres in the USA for sales and was actually #1 one week when King Kong premiered. This is great. We need things like this in our community, so let’s keep it going, even after we are all back to normal, Heck, I think Drive Ins are the new normal and let’s make this tradition part of our community. GRAFFITI USA VIEW
By Chris Murphy
It is time to start our engines.
We have the building, the interior demolition is done and now we are ready to start building our dream to recreate Modesto’s classic car spirit. It is time to step on the gas, come out of this pandemic and build the Graffiti USA Classic Car Museum. Over the last few months, we have been able to host some of the many drive through events in our community and now with our space, we are calling them “Cruise-through” events to introduce the public to this amazing new space. Hopefully you have picked up your Kiwanis dinners, or your Boys and Girls Club to go orders at the museum on Sunday May 23. First, A huge thank you to our amazing volunteers and local contractors and construction firms that have stepped us to help get this started. We can’t do this without you and the museum will be amazing thanks to you. Now, we are ready for you, our donors, our volunteers, and our supporters to get involved as we need you. We need your donations, your ideas, and even your labor to bring this to life. Want do know how you can help? #1 – Donate - Yes we need your donations, you can do it monthly, annually and we have some great donation gifts that will make you feel like the coolest cat in town. We are also talking big donations, like building naming donations. If you want to recognize one of your family with a wing, or an exhibit room, we can do that. #2 - Sponsor a Business- Inside our museum, we will be creating a newly imagined “10th Street”. One area in the day-time and none during the evening cruising hours. It will really be magic and you can have sponsor one of the businesses along the street. For example, my family is putting in a record store, Murphy’s Records, it will be a real record store. We are working with the Modesto Radio Museum to put a radio station inside the museum that will be their museum. There will be a Sanders Appliance Store. You can be a part of this and we want your help to create the magic that will attract people from all over the world. #3 - Help us build it. If you are a contactor, builder, pipe fitter, welder, carpenter, we need your services. The more things like sprinkler systems, HVAC systems, rest-

rooms and Kitchen construction donated or at least at a reduced cost, the faster we can build this museum for all to enjoy. #4 – Donate your classic car. We will be working to show some of the most amazing cars from the classic car age. Also, we can also work on selling some of these cars to raised funds for the museum construction. #5- Tell a friend. Even if you can’t help us at this time, you might know someone, have a supplier that can contribute and be a part of the most exciting new project for Modesto since the Gallo Center was built. We really hope that you see our vision and want to be a part of it. Please contact us a info@graffitiusamuseum.com to connect or you can donate at www.graffitiusamuseum. com In the meantime, stop by and check it out. We are on the corner of Coldwell and Historic 99, aka North 9th St. We are right there on the original highway that was the main connection from the 40s to the 60s. Let’s do this Modesto and bring the Graffiti USA Museum to life.

W E I V D FOO & Brew ! g in k o o C ts e G w e F ir e and B r By Chris Murphy
Back in 1984 Rich Loudermilk and his friend Steve Perry were working at Angelo’s Market Bakery and it was all high school fun. Little did Rich know then, that he would still be making and serving delicious food to this day. A degree from Fresno State and a long career in food service helped him gain experience with Sysco and US Foods. Rich and his wife Christina would later open multiple Round Table Pizzas in the Sonora area, which they still has today. The Loudermilks are a great local family, involved in our community and Christine serves in Omega Nu. Three years ago they would open up a Buckhorn Grill at the main entrance of Vintage Faire Mall. This was a risky move that has proved successful, even through COVID. Now in 2021, they are fully independent with their own Fire and Brew Pub with a great new expanded menu. He has survived the disaster of the COVID pandemic, making it through with loyal customers and curbside service. Rich is grateful for those that supported him during these times and is excited for the new menu and safe in-restaurant dining and service experience. This is a fresh new start, with many of the favorites still featured with open flame grilling and quality smoked BBQ, like the ribs, smoked meats and the pulled pork. These are now the foundation of a new expanded menu that features more pasta dishes. Over the last year, comfort food has made a big comeback and these delicious tastes can be found with their special Mac and Cheese dishes. There are three featured versions; the Dirty Mac with bacon, the Piggy Mac with pulled pork and the Beefy with TriTip. These are delicious and decadent and our view crew demolished all that we were served. Long time regular customer Chris Chavez is really enjoying the new menu and his go-to is the Piggy Mac and his bar seat was his spot to enjoy Fire and Brew. “The food has always good

here and I really like the new items and the place is friendly”, said Chris. My favorites of the day were their Philly Cheesesteak, nice thin sliced steak, peppers and cheese and their Cowboy Burger, an amazing western style bacon cheeseburger with onion rings that is super delicious. For those favoring something a bit lighter, there is a large Cobb salad that will really satisfy and a tasty Caesar that can be “plussed” with some grilled chicken. From their house made potato skins and meat by the pound, there are so many options, but not too many where the menu is too complicated. “Family Friendly” is one of the key goals at Fire and Brew. There are sports on the many TVs, there is a great bar area so people can wait while others shop and during April, there will be a Kids Eat Free” program. Ed Newman, the restaurant manager has a full career of experience from turning around local Taco Bell’s do managing food service at the largest truck stops. “Great food has to be delivered with great quality and service” said Ed. Judging by the service at Fire and Brew, his management is paying off with beautiful plating and prompt and friendly service. With all of this talk of food, your thirst will notice immediately there is a full bar. Now friends, I can’t tell you how important this is when faced with a mall

shopping experience. How does one say “essential” in 10 languages? The menu must be explored in detail. You do not want to miss the custom drink menu and their daily specials, like Tapped Apple Tuesdays, daily Happy Hours, Thursday Pint nights, and more to come as reopening moves along. Fire and Brew is very easy to find, it is big but still feels cozy and there are great spaces for date-night dining as well as family seating. Laurie Smith is one of my favorite city employees, or any government employee for that matter. She is one of those people that is “can do” and will find a way to make programs that improve our community possible. The responsibilities of the parks department are huge and they have an impact in every neighborhood in Modesto, from after school program to Concerts in the Park with Moband to great neighborhood park partnerships. We have all be living in a COVID pandemic world for the last year, and one of the things that has helped all of us make it through this are our chances to get outside, be in our parks, ride our bike trails and for many of the hardest hit communities, deliver program that engage our youth. It is going to be complicated as we start to get back to a world of community and gathering, but it is important to do it right and we can’t leave anyone behind. Laurie has had a variety of roles at the City of Modesto, from economic development and planning to parks, so she is uniquely qualified to help make the connections from the community investments in parks and public spaces to the quality of life that attracts and retains business and our most valuable asset, people. Laurie and I share a common bond that we grew up in Atwater before discovering Modesto and we have worked on many local civic projects together. She is a “can do” person and awesome hummingbird photographer, so let’s get to know Laurie. ModestoView: Growing up in the central valley, what made you want to pursue a career in city government? Laurie Smith: My dad was in the Air Force, a Boom Operator on the KC-135 Stratotanker. When I was growing up we moved every 3 or 4 years. I was born in Bermuda, then moved to Maine, California, Michigan, Louisiana and back to California (in that order). I’ve always been very civic minded, even when I was very young. My interest in public service led me to earn my bachelor’s degree in Political Science from Cal State Long Beach. As a student, I worked for a non-profit social and legal services agency in Long Beach and was

also active as a volunteer in local, state and even one presidential campaign. It was exciting and I loved the energy of it all. To be honest, I never saw myself working for government. After the birth of my oldest son, I moved to Ceres and over the next 8 years worked for 2 local new home and commercial developers. Then, one day a friend called me and said there was an opening at the City of Modesto for a brandnew position: Executive Assistant to the Mayor and the Council. I thought about it and decided to apply on the last day of the recruitment period. I got the job and loved it right away. Dick Lang was the Mayor and Kenni Friedman, Janine McClanahan, Tim Fisher, Stan Dobbs, Dave Cogdill, Sr. and Frank Muratore were Councilmembers. I did everything from managing calendars and the council operating budget to working with citizens to resolve their concerns. It was very rewarding and I felt good everyday knowing that I was contributing in some small way. Twenty-five years later and now the Director of Parks, Recreation and Neighborhoods, I feel the same way. Some days are harder than others and some days are more rewarding than others, but I have always believed and still believe in the importance and value of serving the community.

MV: What kind of opportunities are there when we look at the happiness of a community as well as the economic health? LS: Oh my! So many! Modesto and Stanislaus County have endless opportunities in the great outdoors! Getting outside, enjoying the beautiful weather and wonderful parks is a great boost to your energy and your happiness. When it comes to the economy, we are positioned to be the Recreation Destination of the Central Valley for every type of recreation activity you can imagine: soccer, hiking, biking, running, kayaking, golfing, fishing and more! Come to Modesto for the weekend and go to a soccer game at Mary Grogan Park, golf at Creekside or Dryden, kayak down the Tuolumne River, bike along Dry Creek or on the Virginia Corridor and then catch a Nuts game to end the day. In between all of that there are so many great restaurants to pick up breakfast lunch and dinner before you check in to one of the many hotels that we have to offer. If you live in Modesto, explore our park system. It’s fantastic. If you don’t, come for a weekend visit and see what we have to offer! MV: As we come out of the pandemic, what role can our city and regional parks play in the reopening of our society?
LS: It’s already happening! Our parks are full! People are outside! They’re biking, walking, running, playing disc golf and regular golf too. The playgrounds are busy with children enjoying the activity and the fresh air. The pandemic has been brutal in most ways, yet it’s also provided an opportunity for folks to get outside and be active. As we begin to emerge from the most restrictive tier, we encourage the community to continue wearing masks, maintain the recommended physical distance and wash or sanitize your hands frequently. The City has and will continue to monitor the guidelines as they are issued by the State, provide this information to the community and stay connected. We are also working hard to prepare for each stage of the reopening so we can offer as much recreation programming as we can - as soon as we can. MV: Many people are not aware of the many park programs that are available to our residents, what are some of your highlights? LS: In a pre-pandemic world, the programs range from aquatics to adaptive bowling to Junior Giants youth baseball, and many more in between. In addition, we have 5 community centers that offer a variety of programming: The Senior Center, Maddux Youth Center, Neighborhood Center at Marshall Park, the Airport Neighborhood Center and the King Kennedy Memorial Center. Currently, we provide a variety of virtual programs and classes such as the Virtual Running Club, Bingo and Coffee hosted by the Senior Center, the Senior Meal Program, Virtual Zumba and our Virtual Recreation Center which has over 130 free activities, games and crafts. MV: Volunteerism is so important in our community. What can we do to encourage more involvement? LS: Our volunteer program is really great, and before the pandemic, it was growing every year. In fiscal year FY19 (July 1, 2018 – June 30, 2019) we had: 547 volunteer events, 3,956 volunteers who spent 19,216 hours with a value of $562,256! That’s incredible. We were poised to significantly exceed that in FY20, but the initial lockdown in 2020 stopped all volunteer events in mid-March. Still, in FY20, we exceeded the number of volunteers by approximately 300, the number of hours by 500 and the total value of the volunteer time by $20,000. We are so grateful for groups like 9 to 99, Dry Creek Trail Coalition, Love Modesto, Hispanic Youth Leadership Council, Neighborhood groups, service organizations and many, many others that are committed to making Modesto a better place to live. Those interested in volunteering should contact Stephanie Navarro,

and she will provide all the information about events, projects and opportunities. MV: Are you considering bringing back the NEAT Team? LS: The NEAT program is still available. NEAT projects differ from other volunteer projects in that the typically need a longer commitment of several months. Anyone interested in committing to the maintenance of a specific area, park or trail, can contact Stephanie Navarro at snavarro@ modestogov.com. MV: Social gathering will still be an issue as we define a new normal, what are some of your guiding policies as people look to start planning events and activities? LS: First and foremost, we must be educated on the State’s Blueprint for a Safer Economy. We are now in the Red Tier (Tier 2) and indoor gatherings are “… strongly discouraged…” Outdoor gatherings (with modifications) are permitted with a maximum of 3 households. While we are not yet opening our facilities or picnic areas for reservations, we encourage everyone to follow the guidelines when gathering: wear a mask, maintain physical distance and wash/sanitize your hands frequently. If you had unlimited budget, what is the key thing you would do to enhance our community park system? Can we make that “things”? So many, from new playground equipment and picnic furniture to skating surfaces, upgrade ballfields, turf replacement for water conservation, increased maintenance staffing, upgrade restrooms, cameras and speakers in each park for security, continued partnerships with our neighborhood groups, community education on park usage and Park Rangers. Managing and maintaining our wonderful park system requires resources. This community has done a wonderful job participating with their time and their money. Next budget year I hope to prepare a fund development strategy and implementation plan to identify was to supplement park funding. MV: What do you think is most needed for Modesto to truly be vibrant? LS: Mayor Dick Lang once did a video called “It’s the People”. The video was about the people of Modesto and how special they are and that’s why Modesto is such a great place to live. It’s still true. What’s needed most is what we have, the right people. And I believe Modesto is vibrant. MV: People probably get their ideas of a parks department from the TV show Parks and Rec; so what is the biggest FOLLOW US:

misconception of our parks department? LS: I’m not sure. I’ve been the director for almost 3 years now and I’ve been amazed by the level of dedication and commitment the PRN team demonstrates on a daily basis. They are always ready to get the job done, serve the community and find a way to make it work. They love their jobs and they love this community. MV: What do you and your family enjoy most about our community ? LS: Small town feel. When my youngest son was about 9, we were driving somewhere and he was looking out the window and said, “I love our little town.” That memory still warms my heart. A former CEDD director gave staff an assignment to write a poem about what makes Modesto Great. Here’s mine:

MV: How did you discover your hummingbird photographic talent? LS: A neighbor kid gave me a hummingbird feeder 4 years ago. I hung it in the backyard and the hummingbirds showed up. So, I started taking pictures of them and have learned so much while enjoying the beauty. First of all, they are not afraid of me and I’ve been buzzed a few times. Second, they are very territorial and go after one another if their area is invaded. My son said they’re my pets. MV: Describe your idea day around town. LS: All days start with observing the hummingbird and a cup of coffee! On an ideal day, a visit to one of the great parks for a walk: TRRP, La Loma, Dry Creek. Or a morning round (9 holes only) of golf. Late lunch with my grandchildren and an afternoon in my backyard puttering around. Close the day with happy hour and friends. MV: Finally, Beatles or Stones? LS: Beatles. I can even do an impression of Bob Dylan singing It’s Been a Hard Day’s Night. Really.

“Gateway to Yosemite”” Yosemite
Modesto, the real
By Chris Murphy
The great outdoors are calling our names. Over the last year, we have sheltered in place, remodeled our homes (1 or 2 times), everyone knows our favorite songs and food hacks, fitness program, but now it is time to go out. Literally, go outside. I know many of us have been working though this and people have had various levels of comfort in the outside world. As more people are vaccinated and the cities and counties reopen their schools and businesses, it is more safe than ever to start exploring and rediscover the world that we left behind a year ago. We are all set to rediscover our region and raise our eyes to the future, and look up to the mountains to the east. Modesto is in this wonderful spot, basically a direct line between San Francisco and Yosemite, two of the most beautiful places on earth. I have a special affection for Yosemite, as I was born there 60 years ago and it is a source of magic, inspiration and beauty. Truly, one of the most iconic mountains in the world is Half Dome. I have been to the top many times, and it’s familiar profile has been seen by millions. Did you know you can actually see the majestic Half Dome from the Modesto area on a clear day, the kind of day where the wind is blowing, after a rain and there are no clouds? I think when you can see Half Dome from your city, hometown hero and legendary Yosemite climber Royal Robbins lived here, and Highway 132, (also named the John Muir Highway from Coulterville to Highway 120), that leads to Yosemite runs right through your city, I think qualifies us to truly be both figuratively and literally the “Gateway to Yosemite”. Yes, it’s true. I have seen it myself from a couple of different locations, but I have never had the camera equipment to get a good picture. You can see it from the top of the Doubletree Hotel and from most elevated spaces with no obstruction between Modesto and Yosemite. There is a narrow swath from the southern part of Modesto to a little south of Turlock where you can look down Yosemite Valley. There are pictures from the Lick Observatory on Mt Hamilton too. Still don’t believe me? Fortunately, there are a couple of photographers that took on the challenge to get this elusive clear day picture. In 2009, my friend Elias Funez, formerly of the Modesto Bee and the Patterson Irrigator and now with The Union in Nevada County, captured Half Dome from the West Side on Jennings Road, a road that I drive frequently. He snapped an amazing photo and posted it and it created quite a controversy. Immediately people were claiming it was faked, but it was truly legit. Soon after, another photographer from Lake Tahoe, Tony Immoos had seen the photo and came down to see for himself. Tony found a clear day vista on the east side of town near Denair. It was quite controversial, people accusing him of “Photoshopping”, but few had ever actually ever been to those sites where you can see actually it. Half Dome is actually only 60-70 straight-line miles from Modesto and it’s nearly 9000 feet tall, with nothing else taller in between (El Cap is 7500 ft). On clear days you can see right down Yosemite Valley, with the top of El Capitan and Sentinel Dome in front of one of the most recognizable pieces of granite in the world. Best thing to do is take a local road trip and see for yourself. April and May might be your last chance of the season to see it after some storms. Watch for a clear day after some rain with some breeze and see for yourself. These are the crystal clear days that make it possible. Jennings Road between Monte Vista and West Main and the GPS points from Tony in Denair, are easy to identify at 37.541659°N 120.737164°W Elias Funez blog: https://eliasphoto.blogspot.com/2009/02/clearing-up-air.html Here is Tony Immoos flicker page: www.flickr.com/photos/trimmoos/

Go Climb A Rock
Yosemite is absolutely stunning right now. We had so much fun creating our cover with our young climber Brooke as we are inspired by our amazing location to Yosemite. The waterfalls are thumping this spring, which is always a pleasure. The mist trail up to Vernal Falls is wet and the snowmelt is expected to keep going for a while. COVID access to the park has been tough but now you can visit Yosemite without a reservation. While you are there, even though still closed, check out Camp 4 is where the worlds greatest climbers like Royal Robbins have made their home as they ascended the granite to the sky. You can feel the history. For those less daring, the 4-Mile trail from Bridalveil Falls to Glacier Point is always a winner and doesn’t require a back-country permit but check for winter conditions and possible closure. There is a lottery system to get a permit for Half Dome that you can apply for and lottery winners will be notified by mid April. Cables usually go up around Memorial Day. Curry Village is scheduled to open April 2, bike rentals on April 9 and Housekeeping is scheduled to open April 23 But no matter what time of year you go, it is always amazing. It is good that the Ahwahnee Hotel is back and Camp Curry is back. Even with limited capacity, a cocktail on the Ahwahnee patio, staring up at Glacier Point and Half Dome is an essential. Get up and get in early, enjoy the park and rent a bike. Make sure to wear your mask in public areas and take your rock scrambling shoes and be prepared to get wet. Modesto Must Do’s... Now that people are moving around again, what are some Modesto essentials? I know when friends and customers visit, there are things you just have to do. Every person that visits should walk the Modesto Cruise Route and learn a lot about our city, our classic car story and get some rock and roll history. While you are out, there are many great murals that will really impress and inspire you. Since we are connecting with Yosemite, you should check out the huge Royal Robbins mural on Camp 4 Wine Café and enjoy some delicious farm to fork treats created by Royal’s son Damon Robbins and team. There are a variety of craft micro brews like Contentment Brewery near MJC or 18Seventy Brewing in Downtown Modesto. Now that we are in the red, the live music is coming back to Ralston’s Goat, Rivets, P. Wexford’s, Bauers Downtown where you can dig some great tunes and tastes so enjoy nice dinner and cocktails. At this time, Modesto’s movie theatres are scheduled to be open in April so there will be more options and the McHenry Museum should be opening soon. Check www.modestoview.com for updated opening information and check out www.visitmodesto.com for visitor info.
Modesto Skates This is one of the good things that came out of COVID. Roller skating is back and bigger than ever. There are groups getting together in our parks, creating pop up events and most importantly, encouraging families and friends go lace up their skates and have a great time. Thank to Modestan Brian Cromwell for spearheading a lot of these activities that are creating fun for all ages. We need more all ages activities like this and there are potentially new skating areas in the works with the City of Modesto. From Modesto’s early leadership in recycling in the 1970s with Ecology Now, Modesto’s recycling and waste reduction program is in full swing. We really do need to recycle, reduce and reuse most of what we make and use. The global resources are scarce and we need to live, work and manufacture in a sustainable way. We need to ride our bikes, break down our recyclables and work toward clean transportation. Everyone can do their part. To learn more about local programs: www.modestogov.com/370/Garbage-Recycling

The outdoors is a place to be enjoyed by the whole family. Over the last few years, the citizens of Modesto have really teamed up to improve many of our local parks, including a big renovation of Enslen Park and club house area with new recreation improvements. The College Area Neighborhood has recently given Graceada Park a huge face-lift and the LaLoma Neighborhood has recently spearheaded a new playground at the pavilion at East La Loma Park. These new improvements are game changers. There is a new skate park in the works at Ceasar Chavez park and now the restrictions have been lifted so organized play can begin and the fields can now be reserved. Red Tier Standing By
By Middagh Goodwin It is spring, and the weather is getting warmer, and we should all be planning on what bands we are going to see. Unfortunately, even though things are getting better, we are not quite there yet. Stanislaus County has entered the Red Tier and more people are getting vaccinated(I am waiting to get my second shot later this month.) Restaurants and Cafes are opening up with 25% capacity indoors, and the weather is warming up to allow for more outside live music. Musicians are looking to play more, and we know there is an audience hungry for a night out. It will be a while before places like the Gallo Center and the State are at full capacity. Let’s all do our part to keep things moving in the right direction. I want to shout out to the guys in Talking Shop with the Boss and the Box podcast for teaming up with Gunn Music Radio. Talking Shop with the Boss and the Box podcast will now be heard in LA, Florida, Oregon, the Midwest and Europe. Brandan “the Boss” Blacker and Dave “Lunchbox” Ussery are well known in the local Metal music community but have taken their free time during the Pandemic to build their weekly podcast where they talk about wrestling, metal and horror. This is what more people need to do, create and network during their downtime. I want to thank all the bands

It’s like a game of Russian roulette in a box with one of those mixed in. But you needn’t travel clear across the country in search of fire and flavor. You’ll find reservoirs of both in the soul of another Carolina - Modesto’s own creative force of nurture Carolina Stevens. rehearsals were rained out, with one having to be finished by candlelight. The lack of infrastructure led to other interesting technical issues; for instance, many of the stage lights were intended for nightclubs and kept getting stuck in the “disco” setting, changing color with the beat of the music. Carolina pulled it all together, and you can enjoy the full 8-part recording of ‘Arjuna’s Dilemma’ on YouTube channel ARC3. It’s sung in Hindi, Sanskrit & English, and mixes jazz with western and Indian classical musical styles - a thing of beauty all around.
Two summers later, Carolina embarked on a unique adventure to Kathmandu, where she would serve as stage manager on the first western-style opera produced in Nepal: ‘Arjuna’s Dilemma,’ an adaptation of a Hindu epic tale. “Arjuna’s Dilemma was a wild experience - while I, as a 19-year-old only halfway through college, felt very underqualified, I was simultaneously the most qualified person in Nepal for the job!” recalls Carolina. Nepal has burgeoning and energetic theatre scene and music scenes (though not particularly in the western classical style); but far less training is available, particularly for non-actors, which is why Carolina was brought in to stage-manage. She also taught a 2-day stage management workshop for the locals. The opera was staged outdoors in the courtyard of an ancient palace, during the tail end of Nepal’s monsoon season. Several tech

The calamitous year that was 2020 started off with great promise when the opera adaptation of a Jane Austen novel came to town under Carolina’s direction. During that January weekend, Regency-era culture swept downtown Modesto with the first JaneCon event, complete with dance sessions, costume workshops, and lectures about that historical era. But the shining centerpiece was the U.S. orchestral premiere of ‘Mansfield Park,’ which played out on the stage of our historic State Theatre. “Mansfield Park allowed me to really explore the directing style I had started to establish: using theatrical tools to heighten intimate stories while staying grounded in realism and character,” Carolina says. The piece also ushered in a new era for Opera Modesto: its Story-Into-Song literacy initiative.
SLOW AND STEADY This month sees the unveiling of Opera Modesto’s latest project, a cinematic version of contemporary opera ‘The Race.’ The work is an amalgamation of Aesop’s fables, commissioned by OpMo as part of its Story-Into-Song series. Carolina co-directed this feature film, with a cast of nineteen young opera vocalists bringing the tortoise and the hare and several other critter characters to life. It’s already earned prizes in just about every technical category recognized in movie award shows and was an official selection of festivals in Hollywood, New York, Toronto, Barcelona, Rome, Romania, India, Venezuela, and a few other points on the map. The accolades included two best director prizes for Carolina and her co-director Michael Everett. You can enjoy this fun fantasy feature this month, streaming on-demand from April 9-30, with unlimited views for ticket holders. Learn more at www.operamodesto.org. Spring Fever AND Cabin Fever.
We haven’t had the opportunity to live life as normal and continue a sense of well-being that comes from a healthy social circle -you, like me, might be ready to run screaming. Health experts say that guessing at a reopening timeline is no easier today than it was a year ago. On the list of those activities that people have said that they miss -number one is live music entertainment. Live music with its high-intensity indoor audiences and intricate group logistics cannot be profitable unless all promoters, venue operators and artists feel safe resuming the usual touring cycle. Large outdoor events that are not minding the recommended guidelines and continuing half-speed ahead are not paying artists the minimum wage and are hiring talent of a lesser standard and popularity to keep ahead of the competition. Any local annual events that were cancelled last year whose event and promotion companies enjoyed payment protections and loans from the COVID relief packages while the musicians themselves did not are disingenuous. According to entertainment trade publications, live music events held before Fall 2021 will not be ethical, profitable and most importantly safe. To those businesses that have been mindful, to those people who have faced insurmountable challenges and those of you who have incurred unfathomable losses, take hope as we move newly into the Red Tier that the end is in sight. We will venture forward into our new normal educated by our experiences. Don’t forget those who

cared more about their profit margin with disregard to the health and safety of our community. Don’t forget those who kept us afloat by feeding us, wearing a mask, making sure we did not go without and who listened to our concerns about the unknown. We are amongst heroes. On a lighter more altruistic topic, we are set to celebrate half a century of mobilization for action on the part of an environmental movement. It was in 1970 that the first Earth Day was celebrated on April 22. Today, Earth Day is hailed as the largest secular observance in the world. Create transformative action for our planet and start local- recycle, plant a garden space, use public transportation or ride a bike. Visit loveourcities.com to see how you can help. We can all do something small for a collective change. On Thursday, April 22 A Gathering of the Vibes will hold an outdoor community concert at 3318 Wycliffe Drive in Modesto. This Earth Day celebration will begin at 6 pm with an opening set by Kalea Jackson, 2019 Valley Talent Project Sweepstakes Winner. This free event is for all ages. All prevailing rules of the CDC and local health authorities will be adhered to at the time of this event. Lifestyle Influencer, Tasha Wilson will sing a message of hope and the artists from ModestoRocks will be leaving gifts at the space. A Love Offering will be available for donations that will go back into the community. We all want to resume normal activities. We all want to continue our livelihood and traditions and spring into a positive future. Please, search your conscience and put our community first-in a healthy place and get vaccinated, continue to mask up and social distance. We will open soon-sure and steady saves lives, it’s not worth one more life lost. PLAY BALL!
By MJ Mangano
“Take me out to the Ballgame” Many of us get excited when April comes around, but not only for the beautiful weather, but the start of Baseball season. Already the A’s and Giants have shown up to spring training back in February and plans are to start the season in April. No More fan cutouts! The A’s and Giants have spent much of the offseason developing plans to safely welcome fans back to the parks in 2021 later in the season As far as the Nuts this year, last week the Mariners acquired 100% of the team’s franchise, taking over for HWS Baseball, which had owned the Nuts since 2005. They will be playing at John Thurman Field this year in a division now called “Low-A West”; The Modesto Nuts are opening the season at home against the Stockton Ports on May 4. Go Nuts. Now we are in the red tier more sport will be taking place; high school baseball has issues there is scheduling and Covid 19 restriction; best to check the high schools for more info. Modesto now is allowing youth and adult sports leagues
to resume play at city parks based on updated COVID-19 restrictions. The City of Modesto is now accepting reservations for the following fields Beyer Community Park softball fields, Davis Community Park hardball and softball fields. As of now, places like Rainbow field are open just for team conditioning, but they believe they should open in April for softball leagues. More parks are planning on opening, so you should contact the Parks, Recreation and Neighborhoods Department, at 209-577-5344 for more info. “So yeah grab me some peanuts and crackerjacks (and a beer or two) and let me root for the home team! FIT VIEW
Achieving Success By Efren Martinez
Like many of you I too have had days that I feel I’d rather do something else other than working out again. The thought of doing the same workout I do on a given day can become less appealing over time and even monotonous. This is a good part of why so many of us give up on fitness after just a few weeks into it. Back in 2004 is when I decided to make that life changing decision that I wanted to live a healthy lifestyle. I wanted to live! Up until that time I smoked at least a pack of cigarettes a day, drank socially and my eating habits weren’t healthy. I was an unhealthy happy chubby hubby that weighed over 300lbs. I’ve always been a pretty determined kind of person in life never settling for less than giving it all of my 110%. This determination has worked for me through my college years, marriage and as well as recently celebrating being in business for over 31 years. The key to it all is no secret, it all has to do with believing in yourself along with discipline and determination. Let’s start with believing in yourself that you will succeed. It’s a mind set that doesn’t include the words “I can’t” but more so the words “I can.” Frankly I would just tell myself this is what I’m going to do and do it. Not that easy you say? You’re right, but in order to be able to do this I learned how to focus on my goals. If I wanted something I was going to get it. This is how I quit smoking cold turkey overnight, lost the weight, and was able to win races later on down the road. In fact the first race I ever ran was a 5K race in 2004 where I took 3rd place. It didn’t matter that there where only 3 runners in that race, I still took 3rd, “Just jokes.” It was actually a pretty big race at
the YMCA. Friends determination is what drove me across the finish line and to the podium in just about every race I’ve ever entered. Being disciplined in life really is one of the most important keys in accomplishing many of your goals successfully. Just do what you say and fallow thorough no matter what! It’s also all about doing the right thing especially when no one is watching. It’s actually easier to do than most would think. Start with leading by example. When we do so it helps us reinforce this positive way of thinking to success with the gratitude of knowing that others are watching. What’s equally important is you should do this when no one is watching. Stay focused. So yes you don’t feel like working out on any given day. My advice is to change it up or even change the time when you generally would workout that day and always follow through and do it. The whole concept to training yourself to become as disciplined as you’d like over time can be easily accomplished. I’d recommend doing it in baby steps and in fact most of you are already doing this. As we continue to wear our masks during this global pandemic no matter how much we dislike them, we are following through and wearing them. Same goes for staying socially distant no matter how much we want to hug each other. Congratulation friends and thank you, you’re doing the right thing for the greater good of our community. Thanks to your disciplined behavior you are helping us get even closer to being able to re-open our society and stay open as well as most importantly saving lives. Take this positive step further by using this discipline when it comes to choosing what to eat. Always look to make it a healthy choice. All this is so accomplishable. You can lose the weight, you can stop smoking and you can live a healthier happier life. I am proof of it. Just believe! Believe you will succeed and follow through with the right discipline according to your daily challenges. It does become easier over time and even routine. Yes you can! You will succeed in all things in your life. You are a positive beautiful person that can accomplish anything in life. I believe in you! Spring has sprung and brought with it the loveliest of flowers and greenery this year. Much like the bloom of flowers, things are slowly opening back up for enjoyment. Ms M takes in a book paired
with an iced coffee outside of Preservation Coffee on a warm afternoon while enjoying the sight of people walking downtown again. There is nothing quite like the sound of a busy downtown on a warm day. With the warmer temperatures, you are certain to step outside more often. Here are a few ways you can get the best bargain for your buck. The Easter Bunny continues to hop onward and so should you. Enjoy a free drive-thru Easter EGGSPLOSION event hosted by Modesto’s New Life Church on Saturday, April 3rd from 10 am to Noon. There is fun planned for the whole family that you can take part in all from the safety of your vehicle. There will be Easter Eggs passed out to the first 1000 children. Happy April Modesto! Spring is officially here and Modesto could not be more beautiful. This month, I am excited to announce that I will be attending California Polytechnic State University-San Luis Obispo in the fall! For the next four years, I will be majoring in Environmental Earth and Soil Sciences in hopes of pursuing a career as a Soil Scientist right here in the heart of the Central Valley. I feel that this information is very especially relevant considering that my favorite

holiday, Earth Day, is this month on April 22, 2021. Although Modesto’s annual Earth Day celebration has been canceled due to the virus, Earth has given me a lot to be thankful for recently. I have spent the last several months enjoying the Bear Valley and Dodge Ridge ski resorts along with local rivers and hiking spots. If you are inspired to do the same, I would encourage you to pack a lunch, grab a field guide, and use the All Trails app on your mobile device to find nearby running, hiking, and cycling trails. What I am looking forward to most, however, are the many species that emerge in the Central Valley during spring time. This includes various native insects, animals, and flowers that can be observed at Knights ferry, the San Joaquin River National Wildlife Refuge, the migratory bird viewing platform on Beckwith Rd., or maybe even in your own backyard. If you would like more information on the wildlife in our area, The Great Valley Museum, located at the MJC West campus, and the children’s book “Over the Valley,” by Linda Knoll are both excellent resources. The book can be found on Amazon and gives information on native animals in the valley as well as writing, art, and science lessons. Once again, I am excited for all that this month has in store. I hope you take advantage of the abundance of recreational activities that our area has to offer. Stay active, stay inspired and most importantly, stay safe Modesto!

ZEN VIEW Detaching from the Past
By Mary Layton
Looking back to my old life I feel a sense of bereavement and loss. As much as I wish that things were still like before I am learning to accept once again that everything comes to an end at some point. My schedule and routines have changed and many of my cherished experiences have ended faster than I could ever have imagined. I am realizing that that past experience with all its wonders and magic and fun and connections and habits had its life, time and place. Even though I may not ever continue down the same road as before I feel that these experiences live on in the cells of my body and in my soul. They are there for me to give and share with others and to draw strength and hope from. Endings are never easy to accept. But I feel I have a chance now to redefine myself and to redesign my life. Detaching from the past is to accept change. It is helping me to be open and present for whatever shows up right in front of me. This year the arrival of spring seems especially lovely. What a
good feeling to see flowers and the sprouting of new life and to take in the good smells all around. It reminds me that nothing stays the same forever. We can count on the renewal of life. With it comes a more uplifting mood, new opportunities, the budding of new ideas and creations. There have been many losses but there have also been many gains. The pandemic and the many stresses that we have gone through as a society has made us learn things that may make life better for us as we recover and move forward. We needed to depend on our families more, spend more time together, maybe even moved in with family. I heard that many spouses, partners and friends got closer and we’re feeling grateful for many things that they had taken for granted. We found new innovative ways of connecting with each other through Zoom and FaceTime which added a new facet of communication tools. We learnt to entertain each other, sending pictures and videos. The other great thing is that we can work anywhere now and that is truly a break from the past. It’s a new day! It’s a new life! It’s a new world. We are all in this together.
