Hello friends...

Dog, Big Dog, Little Dog.  These are some of the first words a kid will ever read.  One of my all-time favorite books is Go Dog Go.  Over the last few months, it has been so special to see the pride of my 3½ year old grandson as he starts to learn to read and the feeling of accomplishment. It’s just magic and the doors that will open to a world of amazing things are unlimited. The written word starts your own imagination and opens up new worlds.  Reading is really the foundation of everything. I remember my daughters devouring the Harry Potter books, enjoying the scholastic reading competitions and the global knowledge that they have acquired by reading.

This month we are really focusing on the real world, the things that we can “go out” to do and enjoy with kids, friends and family. In a world where people swipe by little pieces of news and information on their phones, there is little chance that readers will understand the full context. There is

cause to celebrate, at least a little, to see the resurgence of the vinyl record, where you actually listen to a full side of music. The popularity of road trips encourages travel and exploration create questions and answers about the world around us.

The support that our community gives to our libraries is wonderful and we are beginning a new fund drive to improve it.  Bookish is a new bookstore that is capturing the imagination and support of our community that will be a great resource.

As a parent, teacher or grandparent, and even great grandparents, encouraging reading is so important will be a lifelong skill.

When our daughters entered the International Baccalaureate program, I asked a question about what kind of person will succeed in IB.  Their response was simple, “Loves to Read, Love to Write”.  This skill opens new worlds.

The importance of reading is even more obvious when there are attempts to ban

books. This never ends well. There is the written history of our civilization, the good and the bad, but is it wrong to just pretend that if the books don’t exist, then it didn’t happen.  Education, understanding and critical thinking are the key to our success. This also underscores the need for a strong local press, shining sunlight on our community. The founding fathers were educated, scholars, scientists, publishers, diplomats and people with valuable leadership skills.  They weren’t making America just for them, but for the future.

Making Modesto for the future is what ModestoView is all about what we are doing now that makes our community better for our kids, and their kids. There are things we do that deliver results right now, but most of the planning, investment is for what we will be.

Our family is so very proud of Mike McNulty. He is an example of working hard for the future.  Married with small kids, working full time, he went to night school for ten years to get his degree and that changed the course of his future.  His future was important for our family, and his granddaughters followed in his Modesto High footsteps and it is wonderful that his great-grandchildren will see his photo as a member of the Modesto High Hall of Fame as they walk down those hallowed corridors of education.

Let’s celebrate getting out in our community, exploring our surroundings, supporting our local businesses and getting involved. Let’s encourage kids’ curiosity and help explain the world to them, how we keep it safe, green, successful and leaving it in good shape for the next generation. My friends, this is our job, to leave this place and our families in a better place.

Our high heels are on and we are training to “Walk a Mile” in her shoes.

Why?  We have no use for domestic abuse.  This is something that we all must stand up against and prevent sexual abuse of any kind.  We must support those that protect our most vulnerable in our community.  The Haven Women’s Center does work that is literally life saving in the most dangerous times.  Women need a safe place to get away and feel safe.

Moon Trent

Moon Trent is back in in the 209.  Moon was one of early innovators in the local music scene, art, poetry, music and so much more. Over the last 20 years, he lived in San Francisco and made some cool art music, recorded with the Julian, covered some Dolly Parton and even Christmas tunes. He and his partner David Cole founded timmi-kat ReCoRDS. Most recently Moon has recorded a new album, Diet Caviar. He has also put out Jeff Moore 1984’s album called “I am”, and the color lavender vinyl Timmy Kat compilation is

called “Friends of Dorothy”.  Three records in three months.  Welcome back Moon.  We will be looking toward this next chapter.  I have one of Moon’s quotes on the wall of my office and it inspires me daily, hope it does for you too.    For all info : www.moontrent.com

April 8, from 9:45  am – 12:15 pm,  much of the USA will experience a solar eclipse. Modesto is not in the main path, but we will be getting a partial view that will still be a fun science lesson. It should appear that the Sun has a big bite out of it. Library Lifelong Legacy

The Modesto Library, built in 1971, will close in late 2024 to undergo a major revitalization including essential asbestos removal, lighting and ceiling replacement, new carpet, and improved technology infrastructure that will result in a better library experience. Basic renovation is fully funded by state, county and other public monies, demonstrating our community leaders’ belief in the importance of our library.

Additional funding is needed to elevate our library to become the forward-focused facility that lays the foundation to serve all of our community well into the future. Time for Stanislaus Artist Open Studio weekend.  April 13 and 14, 49 Artists open 26 studio and home venues in Turlock, Hughson, Ceres, Modesto, Oakdale, and Knight’s Ferry. Meet the artists, see where they create, and buy some Art. Many of the artists teach classes, do demonstrations, and have information on the Art Scene.  My studio is included on the alley as studio 8 on the map, with guest artist Krystle Lisek, coordinator of the Mistlin Gallery, with her photographs, art, and poetry.  Join us for the annual Open Studio adventure in Art. I have printed maps, and there may be some available at the Mistlin Gallery.  The event is FREE for all ages, with a free online map at www.stanislausaos.com. Plan your trip in advance.  Maps include contact information for participating artists for future reference.

The Chartreuse Muse will be opening “A Shade of Green” from April 9 to May 31, a group show of long-time Muse artists.  I am happy to be a part of this one, as owners Sandra Veneman and Ellen Roehne have announced their retirement as gallery owners/managers after 20 years and return to being professional full-time artists. Ellen and Sandy can then attend the Art Walk

The Muse has been a stalwart anchor in the 209-art scene. A reception for “A Shade of Green” is scheduled for April 13.

DoMo First Friday opens the season on April 5 with a new layout that includes J Street for vendors, and handmade creators, artists.  Mistlin Gallery will be open, so join the crowds from now until November.

Downtown Modesto’s Third Thursday Art Walk announced it is New and Improved, with added venue partners, food and beverage offers, more spots for artists, and new ways to apply to be a participating venue, and for more artists, more opportunities to show art.  Application is through the Tourism Bureau.  Information form at the Stanislaus Arts Council/Mistlin Gallery with the QR codes straight to the application.  Regulars to the Art Walk, Dragonfly Art for Life, Mistlin Gallery, Chartreuse Muse, and Return to Art Walk Peer Recovery Art Project are offering student classes, as is

Carnegie Arts Center in Turlock.  Look for the printmaker’s workshops popping up. Judith Cochran still showing at Kruse Lucas Imports gallery on Tully Rd, just across from Modesto Junior College.  Drop in on the MJC East Campus Art Gallery.  Peer Recovery Art Project, partnering with SOMAR Presents will be hosting an All ages, FREE art, music, and car show event on Tenth Street on April 28. The new show opening at Mistlin Gallery is “Celebration of Fiber Art,” which opens April 2 to May 3. Our love will never end for Veterans.

Dear readers would you mind sittin’ down for a while? It’s for a great cause and a good time!

Picture it: Walk into the bar and see Hawkeye & Radar, a few years wiser, tending the bar, spinning stories and dishing comebacks that might get you feelings. The soldiers who fought for your freedom gather around the only government owned bar in California and toast to good times past and present. Stories of epic wins and epic fails are shared. Soldiers from all different branches and backgrounds tell their tales. Pro-tip: The quiet ones will have the best stories.

Board members of The Veterans Foundation routinely tend the bar along with volunteers. They are helping to raise awareness of their cause but also giving advice on where to get much needed services and help. Most of which are found next door at the Veterans Services Office.

Ryan Kegley, retired Army, says: “We are very fortunate that we have different ways to connect with veterans to help them get the services they not only earned, but deserve. The stigma of receiving help can be hard to overcome and often a Veteran’s greatest battle. Sometimes that requires us to meet veterans where they feel more comfortable, outside of an office.”

On my visit I ran into a Vet Representative

fresh off a week of hard work, sipping on some well earned rewards. This is a place where veterans from all eras get to connect and share their experiences with one another.  “It allows for an open, informal forum for those who stop in to be able to tell their story to another brother and sister who wore the uniform.” -Tomkico Cabral, Veteran Services Rep. A Veteran herself, she told me about the fun to be had just sitting at a bar celebrating our finest.

On Thursdays they open the bar for a lunch fundraiser. The band plays and the dance floor opens up. Fresh sandwiches, made by amazing volunteers, are paired with chips and a smile. All proceeds go to the Veterans Foundation to help veterans in need.

Adjacent to the dance floor is a table set for waitin’ for the lost soldier to come back. A somber reminder to those that come home to honor the memory of those who should be here.

The bar is exclusively open on Fridays from 4 ‘til whenever they feel like going home (usually 9). The drinks are well made; I enjoyed a particularly well made Old Fashioned. Got myself an extra cherry for good behaviour! You know I also had to check out the beers! Running 4 beer’s on tap with just enough variety to make everyone happy. Almanac, Anderson Valley, Salty Crew, and my personal recommendation Scrimshaw.

I love a good bar, but a bar with a good cause? I’ll need a membership.

Live from the Cowboy Capitol of Oakdale

This is one of the longest running rodeos on the west coast and has attracted celebrities and the best rodeo stars. Live from the Cowboy Capitol of Oakdale, the festivities start early the week of April 9 and get crazier as it leads up to the weekend finals.  One of the highlights of the whole week is Rodeo parade Saturday morning.   Key rendezvous points are the H-B Bar where they make an amazing ViewCrew tested Bloody Mary while our friends at KAT

Country 103 announce the parade.  The weekend events at the rodeo grounds are great for the whole family as there is a lot of food, fun, thrills, spills and even rodeo clowns. Record Store Day on April 20th

Did you know that Modesto has its very own locally-owned Record Store located in Downtown? Opened last year on October, 21st, 2023, Broken Records Toys and Collectibles has been slowly growing a devoted following of music lovers. They buy, sell, and trade new and used vinyl, CDs, cassettes, and collectibles. If you are a local musician, they will even consign your release for sale. They even have a section from the locally owned label timmi-kat Records. Check them out for that record you have been looking for or a fun gift. located at 1321 I Street in Downtown Modesto.

Open at 11 am - 6:30 Mon-Tues Fri-Sat, and 11 am-4:30 pm on Sunday and closed Wednesday and Thursday. Broken Records will be celebrating Record Store Day on April 20th, with a day of music, vendors, and more starting at 10 am.

Record Store Day is an annual event that began in 2007, celebrating the culture of the independently owned record store. It takes place every April and every Black Friday. The day brings together fans, artists, and thousands of independent record stores around the world. Mad Monk, 3500 Sisk Rd, Modesto, also participates in RSD.

PRESERVE THE PERLEY MANSION

There are few buildings remaining in Modesto which hold the distinction of having been built prior to 1900, due to much of “Old Modesto” being torn down throughout mid-20th Century. Those sites that remain of that period are deserving of community appreciation and support as surviving vestiges of a bygine era in Modesto when expansive homes were commonplace in downtown – built by early Modesto settlers who contributed to the business and civic development of the city. As previously written about, one of these remaining Victorians is the now former Franklin and Downs Funeral Home located at 704 12th Street, originally built almost 130 years ago. To many in the area, the home has always been the longtime prominent funeral home; however, the house has connections to early Modesto community leaders who were committed to the betterment of the city and its inhabitants.

Completed by the end of 1895, the “palatial residence” was built for George Perley and his family. The Perley Mansion was a grand three-story home, designed in the East Lake style by Modesto architect Julian Mourot, who had also designed the old Tynan Hotel. The residence featured a rather distinct turret, ornate decorative trim details, and was fitted for gas plumbing and electricity. The mansion, adorned with French plate glass and stained-glass windows of all shapes and sizes, was considered “one of the handsomest residences in Modesto.”

George Perley moved to Modesto in the early 1870’s, and came to be regarded as a pioneer business and community leader. In 1879, he opened the City’s first abstracts and title office which supported a long career in real estate and development. In 1910, Perley was selected as one of 15 freeholders tasked with consideration of a new form of city government to better address the law-and-order needs of the growing

town. This led to the drafting and adoption of the City Charter of 1910. Under the new Charter, Perley was elected to serve as one of Modesto’s first councilmen in 1911, and in that capacity held the position of commissioner of public works. He was a supporter of “progressive” civic reforms to improve and clean up the town, and even was the master of ceremonies for the christening celebration for the Modesto Arch in 1912. After committing half a century to the success of Modesto, George Perley passed away in 1923.

The home was sold to George Sovern and his business partner in 1921, who moved their mortuary business from 10th Street to the Perley Mansion. While the parlor was converted to better accommodate funeral services, much of the original 1895 mansion was kept intact under their ownership.

George Sovern was also civic minded, and was elected in 1930 to serve as the County Coroner and Public Administrator, serving in those roles until his passing in 1938.

The adjacent home, 1211 G Street, was the Sovern Residence. After 25 years in operation, Mrs. Dora Sovern sold the business and property to Lewis Franklin and Saxon Downs in 1946, after which time the home’s façade was remodeled into the Colonial Chapel as it is known today, by partially removing the rounded tower and enclosing the front porch areas. Franklin and Downs went on to do business in the same location for nearly 70 years.

While the exterior and layout of the home were changed over the years to better serve the needs of its three owners, the core of the home is still the original 1895 Perley Mansion with several existing features including stained glass windows, shingling, front porch pillars (enclosed within interior walls), and the curved staircase and banister. It continues to serve as a reminder of the earlier generations in Modesto that sought to contribute to the community and make it a better place to live. With no protections in place for the old stately icon of Downtown Modesto, long term plans for the property or chances for preservation become reliant on a prospective owner. Whatever the future may hold for the Perley Mansion, its loss would certainly be felt in the community as one of the surviving remnants of “Old Modesto.”

Something really cool is happening in Modesto.  It involves the written and spoken words. One of the many things I love most about doing ModestoView is highlighting the things that make us slow down, put down the phones, and really absorb what you are doing.  Reading and listening to music fill those needs well.  That time to think and imagine is so very important.   This month, Bookish, a new bookstore, opens in Modesto’s Roseburg Square. Built from scratch by Will and Paula Treick DeBoard, Bookish has the cheering support of their friends and community. Will and Paula are bringing some amazing cred to a local bookstore. Will was a long-time sports writer for the Modesto Bee and is now a CIF Sac-Joaquin Section Assistant Sports Commissioner. Paula is an author with four novels and is a creative writing lecturer at UC Merced. As you might imagine, this is an amazing effort to open this store.  Modesto needs a local bookstore, a gathering place and a fountain of creativity. Bookish will have a creative impact on Modesto.  Let’s meet Will and Paula.

ModestoView: What is it about books that made you want to open a bookstore?

Paula Treick DeBoard: We’re both longtime, unapologetic nerds who love books and bookstores. No matter where we end up on vacation, we’re always checking out the local bookstore scene. With Bookish, we’re hoping to combine books and community, and give booklovers their own space in Modesto. One thing that we’re both particularly proud of, is that pretty much every person and business that has contributed to the creation of Bookish - and there are a lot of them - are all from the 209. We’ve used local businesses and members of our community at every step - from our logo design to signage to the woodworking within the store - we wouldn’t do this any other way..

MV: Did you grow up loving to read and write?

PTD: Absolutely. We were both library card kids, summer reading program kids, you name it. I may have peaked in 1985 when I won a copy of Charlotte’s Web in the Henry County (Ohio) read-a-thon.

Will DeBoard: I lived at the Hughson branch of the Stanislaus County Library most summers (and other seasons). It was this little space next to the I.O.O.F. Hall that had stacks of books - probably to dangerous heights!

MV: What was the first book you remember reading as a child?

WD: For me, the children’s book I remember most is From The Mixed Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler, by E.L. Konigsburg. It’s about two kids who stumble across a mystery and end up spending the night in the Metropolitan Museum of Art while solving their mystery. I’m a big re-reader, and I read this book to tatters. I feel like that book, in particular, really sparked my imagination.

PTD: These obviously weren’t the first books I read, but I loved the Nancy Drew series. Nancy had a convertible! She had smart friends! She solved mysteries! I was enchanted from the beginning.

MV: Are you finding that more people want a connection to the written word in a tactile way?

PTD: I do think there’s a return to the romance of physical books, like the trend to listen to music on vinyl. There’s just a different feeling when you interact with pages rather than with a computer screen. But people encounter books–stories–in a lot of forms: physical books, ebooks, audiobooks. Even if we’re consuming stories in a different way, we’re just as hungry for them now as previous generations.

MV: How do you think that more parents can instill the love of reading?

WD: The biggie for me is making sure your kids are around books. Could be the library. Or maybe little free libraries in your neighborhood. Or we can help you at Bookish. I grew up reading just about anything I could get my hands on, and my parents made sure I had a lot of books to read. I still remember, as an elementary student, getting a book at Waldenbooks in Vintage Faire Mall. My parents were nearby, but not right there (that happened back then) and I didn’t quite have enough money to buy the book I wanted. I think it was a Choose Your Own Adventure. And the woman behind me paid the extra. I remember her saying, “Helping a child get a book. That’s well-spent money as far as I’m concerned!” Thank you, kind woman, wherever you are.

PTD: We aren’t parents ourselves (at least, for the purpose of this question, our dogs probably don’t count), but parents reading to kids is so important. It forms bonds and creates a quiet space for imagination and discussion. I’m so fortunate that I grew up in a house with parents who read, and read to us. My mom and I still read the same books and talk about what we’re reading every time we’re together.

MV: Will, how important is it that we have a thriving local newspaper?

WD: Oh man, it’s so important. Newspapers speak truth to power and shine the light into so many dark places. We need to have a watchdog that holds elected officials accountable; but also, we need somebody there to chronicle the good as well. Newspapers and the media in general have taken their lumps over the last several years, but I know

personally that no shortcuts were taken at the Modesto Bee during my time there. Everybody there worked so hard to get the story right and we talked deep into the night to make every story better. It’s the best job I’ve ever had; we really did great work. There’s always a market for great journalism.

MV: Paula, what was your first published work and did that change your view of the book world?

PTD: My first novel, The Mourning Hours, was published in 2013. It’s a family drama about a teenage girl who goes missing in the middle of a snowstorm, a mystery that isn’t solved for decades. I was fortunate to work with the same publisher for four books, and that gave me a lot of insight into the publishing world, and that’s partly what made me more interested in the bookselling side of things.

MV: Will and Paula, what authors have been your biggest inspiration?

WD: In my formative years, I probably read Stephen King more than anybody else. He’s such a great writer of dialogue. He created real people and he put them into unreal situations. More recently, Neil Gaiman is way up there. He takes chances and writes many different genres. And our love for him multiplied exponentially when he amplified our crowdfunding on social media.

PTD: There’s probably too many to list, so I’ll just say Judy Blume. She’s fearless and knows her audience. I watched the Judy Blume Forever documentary and fell in love with her all over again.

MV:  ModestoView is my side hobby that has become a major project; how do you see Bookish affecting your current jobs of writer/lecturer and sports commissioner?

WD: I’ll continue with my day job, which is Mondays through Fridays. The current plan for me is to be there at evening events and on Saturdays. You can see it on certain social media comments when bookstores are brought up, this isn’t considered an industry where you become millionaires. I consider this a labor of love and I think it’s going to add to the culture of the city we’ve called home for the last 35 years. And I’m a 209 native. Hughson, representing!

PTB: I’ll be part-time at UC Merced beginning this fall, so in the summer and on my non-teaching days, I’ll be at Bookish. I’ve been too busy the last few months for any serious writing, but I’m looking forward to a new project soon.

MV: Besides selling books, how do you think Bookish will contribute to Modesto’s culture?

PTD:: Two closures in Modesto have really impacted us: Yesterday’s Books and Barkin’ Dog. We want Bookish to be a combination of those things–a celebration of books and booklovers, but also a community space where people can gather and feel welcomed. We both love the idea of a “third space” beyond work and home, and since the pandemic people have been craving those spaces in their lives.

MV: What can a person expect when they enter Bookish?

PTD: We want to be a welcoming space where you can meet a friend for a cup of coffee while your kiddos listen to storytime, where you can spend an hour browsing books and getting recommendations from our team, or where you can find the perfect gift for a friend. (We gift wrap, too!)

MV: Will you host live events and guest speakers?

WD: That’s definitely the plan. While our hours will be 10-6 to begin, we will definitely have special events and gatherings after that. They could be a poetry reading, or a silent book club, or maybe even something like a storyslam. We hope to be a regular stop for authors on book tours as well.

MV: Besides shopping and buying books, how can Modesto best support this project?

PTD: While we’ll primarily sell books, folks can always stop in for a cup of coffee. We’re thrilled to be working with Volente Coffee Roasters in Modesto, which supports some of the most vulnerable people in our community.  We’re also working with local artists and artisans who make greeting cards, bookmarks, journals, stickers, hats, totes and more, and we’ll have plants from Bruha Studio. Also, we’ll be supporting local writers by carrying their books in our store. If you’re an audiobook listener, we can help you sign up for Libro.fm, which is a great alternative to Audible and supports local bookstores.

MV: Describe your perfect Modesto day?

WD: Walking our dogs on Virginia Trail and

heading to a place like Good Day Lucille or LoFi diner or the Bakeshop for breakfast.

Finding a good place to read a book or listen to music for a couple hours, maybe Graceada or Pike Park, which is in our neighborhood. There’s a new board game cafe in town, so maybe checking out what is happening at Meeple Valley. And evening would be a movie or event at The State followed by a pinball game and a pint with friends at Contentment Brewing.

MV: Final question, Beatles or Stones?

WD: It’s Beatles for the both of us. They were an amazing band for a long time and you will probably hear some of their songs

at Bookish periodically. We were fortunate enough to see Ringo Starr when he came to Will’s hometown of Hughson, of all places. Pretty amazing. Will is particularly glad you didn’t throw Led Zeppelin into the question, because that would have been far more difficult to answer.

The City of Modesto is offering a Multi-Family Dwelling Bulky Item Pickup Program for residents living in apartment complexes and multiplexes. This program offers a convenient way to dispose of large bulky household items. You can schedule a pickup by contacting your property manager or owner, who will schedule the pickup with the solid waste company, or by contacting your solid waste company directly. The solid waste company will give you or your property manager a pickup date.

The Taco Shop

I really don’t know anyone that doesn’t like tacos.  Seriously.  What’s not to like?  Portable, tasty, easy, endless varieties, meats and flavors, mini tacos, giant tacos, breakfast tacos and even choco-tacos.  It’s an amazing food group, more versatile than hamburgers or pizza. AND, our area boasts some of the best tacos anywhere.  Period.

You need to head out north of Modesto to Bangs Ave, where you will find The Taco Shop. This project has been the brainchild of Roman Wagner and Ryan “Hondo” Johnson for years as they wanted to do local tacos right. NW Modesto needs a good legit taco shop and now it’s here.  Many of you well recognize bar tender extraordinaire Sean Devlin, back in Modesto managing the Taco Shop.

Located on Bangs Rd, in the former location of Smokey’s, the Taco Shop is full service, open in the mornings and has some great authentic tastes for any time of day.   The kitchen is lead by Juanita Mendoza, who originates in Michoacan, Mexico, and brings the recipes of her family to the Taco Shop.   Her traditional tacos are amazing, you can get taco truck tacos and you can get quesabirria tacos (my favorite) too.  But, if you are feeling super hungry, order one of Juan’s Giant tacos, or the Big Juan’s Taco Supreme.   It is a literally a two-handed taco and the shell is crisp but not too crunchy and is filled with your choice of meat and all of the trimmings.

and really showcase the flavor of the food.  The food is and tastes super fresh and the salsas are delicious.

The menu has so much variety and you can start your day with some tasty and spicy Chilaquiles, breakfast tacos, huevos rancheros, or a breakfast burrito.  These are all large portions and will get your day to a good start.  Something that you will enjoy all day long is the Cowgirl ensalada, with fresh beans, corn, avocado, cheeses and meats that is a real meal. You can enjoy full dinner entrees like chile verde, polla a la crema, sopes and more.

Now here’s the kicker.  You don’t have to wait for lunch or dinner to get your tacos.  The Taco Shop opens weekdays at 8 am with breakfast tostadas.  Currently the Taco Shop is open 8 am to 4 pm Monday through Friday.   This month, you can expect new later hours to 8pm for a great dinner.   Don’t forget to check out the daily specials on the chalkboard.

The kitchen is efficient and quick and your taco jones will soon be satisfied.   If you have kids, they have a fun kid’s menu with quesadillas, burrito, and tacos.

For you commuters, or if you are on the run, you can get a to-go order and do a grab n go and call it in. If you have time to come in, you can enjoy a large bright dining room, lots of tables and even pinball machines. Roman says they will be adding more games over the next few months.

Kids help us learn about the future.

They are our conscience, our inspiration and the open-minded wonderment of a child is what continues to inspire us, or at least it should. It is up to us to change the way we think and get out and look around, be curious and explore the real world.

I really hope I never grow up, at least mentally. I am a “things can always get broken to be better” kind of person. There is always a smarter way to do something or there is a new idea that’s better than mine. Fresh ideas make the world go round. It wasn’t that long ago that a fresh idea in Modesto from visionary Cliff Humphries innovated curb side pick-up with a group Ecology Action. As we celebrate at our Pollinator Festival, Earth Day, Love Modesto Day, and enjoy the aftermath of the Almond Blossom explosion, we think about new ways to do things, new things to do and let’s boldly go forth with the wide-eyed wonderment of a child so we keep learning how to make things better for all of us.

Did you know?

Curbside recycling was started in Modesto! Yes it’s true. Modesto found itself at the forefront of recycling with the hard work of UC Berkeley student and activist Cliff Humphrey who discovered Modesto on the 1970 “Survival Walk”. As he passed through Modesto, he saw the potential for a local market of recycled newspapers, cans and glass. Later that year, he relocated his organization Ecology Action to Modesto, which soon became the first city in the country to offer collection of post-consumer recyclables.

5. Play a game of pickleball in Graceada Park

Maybe you have heard about this new game sweeping the nation? Seriously though, all ages can get their game on, and there are courts at Graceada and Beyer Parks as well as Del Rio with more to come. Futsol (mini soccer) can also be found on these local courts.

4. Explore and enjoy the Modesto Children’s Museum

7. Spend a day browsing books at one of our Stanislaus County Libraries.

While the library is already a great outing with kids, April is jam-packed with cool events this year. The Modesto Library has LEGO play every Wednesday at 3:30pm. There’s Dia (bilingual storytime) on the 17th @ 4pm in Ceres and the 20th @10am in Modesto. And you won’t want to miss Family Story Time on the 23rd at 6pm in Oakdale (come in your PJs!) Make sure to get your kid a library card!

8. Go see a matinee movie. Movie theaters are still hands down the best way to relax, snack and enjoy a new, or even old, movie. Kids are delighted to get the opportunity of a special candy or popcorn. Great activity when weather isn’t great and can save a couple bucks if you snag a matinee time.

Modesto boasts several options to view your favorite flick: Brenden Theater (downtown), State Theater (downtown), Regal Cinema (N. McHenry), Galaxy Theater (Riverbank)

10. Collect flowers and press them in a book to make a special card for mom for Mother’s Day. Children will love to participate and observe the change that happens with Mother Nature’s creations. Start with fresh flowers and a large book like a dictionary. Open the book to the middle. Place flower in between two paper towel sheets. Use more paper towels if your flower contains a lot of moisture. Carefully slam shut and revisit in about a month. The positioning of the petals and stem is how the flower will dry. Dried flower can be glued to a card, put in a frame, the options are endless!

11. Go Play! There are some fun places that kids can really cut loose. Check out FunWorks, Boomers, Sky Zone, Chucky Cheese, John’s Incredible Pizza, Dave & Busters, Ten Pin Fun Turlock, and the locally owned Play Modesto on Sisk Road. These are all nice clean places where your kids can play while you relax. Most of Modesto’s city park are getting new playground equipment with a lot of variety and you can enjoy those for free. 12. Ride bikes or scooters on the Virginia Corridor or the Mensinger Trail along Dry Creek. A great way to enjoy spring in the Valley, check out two of our bike (and non-motorized scooter) paths! The 2.9-mile Virginia Corridor Trailway follows the old Tidewater Southern Railway line from Campus way to Woodrow Ave. The Dry Creek Trail starts at Moose Park and runs 4.5 miles all the way to Claus Rd. Both are also dog friendly- just make sure they’re on a leash!

13. Climb up a rock wall! There are so many ways to get up the side of a rock wall. Many of our local parks like East LaLoma, Graceada, or Moran Estates have beginner climbing structures with hand and footholds. Before you decide to head to Yosemite to be the next Royal or Liz Robbins, check out the Alpine Climbing Adventure in Ripon and learn the climbing ways. 16. Go find a new book to read at Bookish in Roseburg Square

There is a cool kids’ section, coffee for you, and books for everyone, in as great local shopping center you can walk to.

17. Enjoy Earth Day at Graceada Park on April 22

Graceada Park is a place to explore nature with the many varieties of trees, great playgrounds and Earth Day, where you can learn more about protecting our planet, recycling and the many ways you can help keep our plant green.

18. Visit the McHenry Museum

Educate your kiddos about some of the first founding families in Modesto and expose them to what a life might have looked like before ‘screen time’! It’s good that kids learn about the history of the place where they live. The Museum and Mansion are open to everyone but is probably best for children 4 and older.

19. Walk the Modesto Historic Cruise Route tour.

Do you know why Modesto is so cool? There are many famous people that come from Modesto here are just a few. Film stars Jeremy Renner, Tim Olyphant and the late Harve Presnell

are loved around the world, Ann Veneman was a US Cabinet member, Royal Robbins pioneered the sport of climbing, Ernest and Julia Gallo revolutionized the wine industry and George Lucas changed modern film making and wrote and directed American Graffiti about Modesto. 20. Enjoy fresh local offerings at the Modesto Farmer’s Market We are in the heart of agriculture- no wonder Modesto’s Farmer’s Market is one to check out. Also, no secret that kids love fruit. Have them be part of the selection process where they can sample different varieties of various fruits. Expert Challenge: try to create an entire meal from only items purchased at the local farmers market! Markets are Thursday afternoons and Saturday mornings on 15th Street next to the library.

21. Take some chalk over to your neighborhood park/playground and beautify the sidewalks. Use chalk to dress up those boring sidewalks in your neighborhood and parks! Draw and color an incredible picture, make a hopscotch that goes as long as you’d like, or create an obstacle course for your neighbors! Best part is all of this creative ‘mess’ is happening outside of the home :)

22. Start planting a kids’ garden with their favorite things to eat (now is the time to start planting!) Enjoy time outdoors planting a garden with your kiddos. What are their favorite fruits and veggies? Do they grow in Modesto? How many worms will you find? Sweet cherry tomatoes, mint (keep in a pot as mint will spread fast), basil, and strawberries are fun, flavorful options to start with!

Tabletop gamers rejoice! Meeple Valley Board Cafe has opened at 115 Mark Randy Place, Modesto. A daily pass is $7 or you can get a monthly pass for $35, allowing you to choose from over 200 games to play until closing each day. Meeple is open Sunday through Thursday from 12 pm to 8 pm and Friday through Saturday from 8 am to 10 pm. You can rent two rooms to host parties, streaming, or other events. Reacquaint yourself with the original Star

Wars Trilogy, which is meant to be seen on the big screen. The State Theatre will be screening Star Wars: A New Hope, The Empire Strikes Back, and The Last Jedi from April 26 to 28. Planting the Seeds for a Good Harvest

That is what we are doing with the Central Valley Ska Festival planting seeds to grow into something bigger in the future. The 3rd Annual SOMAR Music Festival and Lowrider Car Show: Tribute to Selena and Cesar Chavez is happening in the 10th Street Plaza on April 28th 11 am-7 pm. Performing live will be Amor Prohibido(Selena Tribute), Sabrosito, and Nuevo Reflejo Band. There will also be performances by Ballet Folklorico Falcones and Casa de Cultura Danza Azteca. This is Modesto’s largest party of the year!   Over 60 porches across the College and La Loma and the Bodem/Morris Area neighborhoods will be making a huge party.  Grab your bicycle and go from house to house, porch to porch and hear most of Modesto’s favorite musicians.  This is a fun day to hang out with friends and find new bands.  Remember, the homeowners and the bands are donating their porches and their performance so PLEASE tip these folks during the day from noon- 5 pm.  Bring water and lawn chairs and enjoy the day.  Final maps and band listings will be posted later this month at www.modestoporchfest.com

Well, on we go to spring, which is in full swing. We’re tending the garden and thankful for the rain to keep things coming up. The flowers and the vegetable garden are sending up their shoots of things to come. The farmer’s markets are back with their offerings and the best in fresh local produce. The Deaf Puppy Comedy Club, which just opened in Manteca, is new to the scene. Roman of Roman on the River Live 105 has been doing some comedy shows in Modesto, and hopefully, the momentum will continue to support some much-needed humor in our area. Stay tuned! We all need to work on supporting the venues that support the arts and creating new venues, as there are many great bands that need to be heard. Together, we can make it happen and see things strive! There are some great shows at Gallo Center, but also check out some great venues out of town: The Newman Theatre, Vinhose Tapas Bar in Merced, Yoshi’s Oakland best jazz shows, Khumba Music Center Santa Cruz, and Piedmont Piano Company, the Back Door, and the Sound Room located in Oakland.

Opera Modesto is presenting a masterpiece!  Puccini’s Tosca is one of the all-time best operas.  If you ever wanted to get inspired or check out the opera for the first time, this is one of the best.  Political intrigue during the Napoleon era sets the stage for the music and there is something for everyone. Opera Modesto is pleased to present an up-and-coming star, Tiffanie Trujillo, winner of the Kristina Townsend award as Tosca. Take note, only ONE showing only of this work. Staying Focused for a Healthy Weight

My weight loss journey started in 2004, back then I weighed a great deal.  To cut through the “fat” so to say, here’s the “skinny” of what worked for me. I learned early on that losing weight had more to do with what I ate and when I ate it versus exercising ‘till I dropped to the floor. It was a long learning process on nutrition as well as foods to generate a faster metabolic rate to improve burning calories. It’s important to stay focused.

Fasting for 12 hours after your last meal switches your body to basically start burning fat instead of glucose. This is how I lost so much weight. This method is also known today as the 12-hour fast. Eat whatever you want during your nutritional time in the day but have a cut-off time for food and don’t eat for 12 hours. For myself I went two steps further. I would start my daily nutrition in the morning around 8am and not have anything to eat after 6pm. I ate nothing but clean natural foods and drank nothing but water. It was a very strict plan and not for everyone, but the weight fell off 5 times faster than today’s 12-hour weight loss method so many are trying. It really does work. I’d recommend possibly trying the 12-hour fasting method and incorporate eating as healthy as you can while doing so. No processed foods, sugary

drinks and avoid alcohol. I also mixed a teaspoon of cinnamon and honey in my morning coffee. This over time helped me speed up my metabolic rate to lose more weight. Of course, include exercising however you want and can. Just get moving.

Get your heart rate up enough to make a difference in your routine. Please remember, 70-80% of losing weight is nutrition and knowing what to eat and when. So don’t overdo it. I’ve chosen to feature my weight loss journey and experience since many by now may have fallen off that New Year’s fitness resolution.  I’m also noticing that a few out there are using the new weight loss medications that can cost upwards of $1,000 per month.

Friends the cost as well as the possible side effects from these medications may not be worth it. After you stop taking the medication the weight may come back if you haven’t changed your eating habits. Plus, for many of us, spending $1,000 each month for this weight loss medication may not be affordable.

Please, always consult with your doctor before starting any kind of weight loss, fasting and/or exercise program and the common sense natural way is usually the best

Burn & Rave’s Open Mic Poetry Night & Haiku Battle returns to Lo-Fi on Wednesday, April 10th, 7:30pm. This month features “Shaiku,” the art of talking smack about someone or something in the form of a haiku! Feel free to go hard and let it all out! Poetry should be cathartic!   And then on Saturday, April 20th at the State Theatre, four (4) national poetry slam teams will descend upon the State Theatre to compete for $2000 in prize money! Teams from Utah, Visalia, West Hollywood, and Oakland are scheduled to compete. The CHILL LIST is like the ILL LIST poetry slam but on steroids! While scouring dust swipes the walls, splinter points stab the backs of their hands.

She sketches the lives in splinters, the wind-blown dust and rough-hewn rooms.

Behind the barbed wire they stand, hand in hand, watching three kites in the sky. The hands of the wind shake the trembling paper, a tethered hunger.

Hey Modesto! Happy April! With the arrival of spring, the city is buzzing with excitement. The warmer weather is a welcoming change. It definitely inspires me to get outdoors and I hope it inspires you too. The warm weather we are having makes me want to explore all that our vibrant community has to offer!

Recently, I have enjoyed going to our very own Vintage Faire Mall. There are about 174 different stores to shop at. Whether you’re on the hunt for the latest fashion trends or simply enjoying a leisurely stroll, the mall offers something for everyone.

It’s the perfect destination to spend quality time with friends.

Another place I love which is right next to the mall is BJ’s restaurant. My friends and I have been going there almost every week.  The waiters are beginning to know us by name. Sometimes we go just for the Pizookies! They are definitely big enough to share. I love our downtown and the small businesses there, but I also love to stroll around our mall every now and then.

As a Senior I can see the end of my high school days fast approaching. There will be dress shopping for prom coming up. I recently checked out Allure Formal Wear. I went to their fashion show last year and was stunned by how beautiful all their gowns were. It left a lasting impression on me, showcasing an array of stunning gowns. I had to go and check out the store for myself.  The show was held at Venue 833 and that building is gorgeous. It’s located downtown on 10th street. I am looking for something special for my senior prom, and I am sure to find it there.  Allure is located at 1400 K St. Suite H, Modesto CA 95354. Enjoy the blooms and the sunshine and get out and explore our city.

Keep on Learning

It’s so refreshing to learn something new. The other day I watched a friend learn Spanish online. It looked like he was having a lot of fun. I realized that I knew quite a lot of words myself and I now want to see whether I can make some more progress. Of course, any time we learn a new language we learn so much about the culture of the people, how things are communicated in that language.  In California knowing how to speak Spanish can increase your chances to get hired. The idea to travel to Mexico and actually be able to make conversation with people will make for an entirely different travel experience!

To keep learning new things keeps us feeling younger. Actually the brain needs

to be exercised, like any muscle, no matter what age you are, to function well. Just as the body may need a variety of nutrients and food to perform well, the brain works even better when it is exercised in various ways. Some people say that doing cross word puzzles helps them with memory function and creative thinking. Learning new skills, using tools you have never used before, like for example a bow and arrow,  or learning how to play an instrument, learning how to dance Salsa or Tango - whatever it is we learn from scratch can help us to get a break from habitual kinds of thinking patterns. Part of learning is to listen well, to concentrate, to be fully present. Suddenly we stop worrying about the past or the future.  Learning something new takes patience. We need to keep at it, keep doing it. The more we stay with it, the more our understanding and peace of mind increases. This Spring go for it and learn something new!
