What’s on your mind? Are we covering the things you like to see? Do you like what is in ModestoView or do you just want to say hi? Send us a note and we thank you for reading our magazine.

ModestoView Note: We like to try to stack our local wines up against the best and see how we do overall. But you are right there are so many great local wines we could go on for days.

On the cover:

This wonderful VanGoghization of our historic downtown was done by local artist Becky Murphy so celebrate the Modesto Art and Wine festival. You can see more of her work, including glass bead creation at www.beckymurphy.com

Dear ModestoView: Thanks for the story time info in the calendar. I com pletely forget that the library has all of these good things for kids. It is the total extra break in the day that I need when the kids can sit mesmerized by a storyteller. I can kind of daydream for a little while and enjoy my coffee. Leslie J. Modesto

Dear ModestoView I really enjoy the wine columns. I like the rating system so we can see who likes what. I was wondering why you had so many wines out of our region. We have so many good local wines that might be good candidates. Keep it going though and tell more people how good our wine is. Pete Simons, Riverbank

Hey ModestoView: I am so happy that I discovered Semplicita Coffee downtown. I had no idea that they had such a cool back yard. It is a great place to read the paper and the Richard is so nice in the morning. More people should go since you have to look for it on 15th between G and F. It is worth it and thanks for the tip. Cassie451 @xxxxxx.net Hi Chris: Thanks for all of the local band information. We still need the big radio stations to play more local music. It is cool once a week, but these bands need to be on more. I know it is just a start, but please tell everyone to call the stations and get more local band airplay. Thanks, Matt Johnson Modesto ModestoView says: We couldn’t have said it better. Here are the numbers. B93.1 5519393 and KHOP 95.1 548-0951 KWIN 98.3 951-KWIN (5946)Start calling today.

odestoview has always been about celebrating everything that's good about Modesto. Whether we're talking about Mo-Band, the Farmers Market, the downtown art walk, or the numerous independent family owned restaurants staffed by talented chefs spread throughout our city we have a lot to be proud of. Modestans can again puff our chests with pride as a local company just walked away with an international honor. Fiscalini Cheese Company was recently awarded 1st place in the "extra-mature traditional cheddar" category at the World Cheese Awards in London. It was the first time that a cheese outside of Europe has won this award. Fiscalini's bandaged wrapped 18- month cheddar can now claim the title as the world's best cheddar cheese. If you don't believe me check out the feature article "The Worlds Best Cheddar" in the August 31st issue of Wine Spectator magazine.

BBQ is Tip Top You might have been hearing about it but have never seen it. Tucked back on Drake Ave, (next to the Stone Gallery), there is a new take out BBQ place in town that has been slowly building a killer reputation. The food is awesome with a wonder peppery BBQ sauce on big beef ribs that peel off the bone. Full range of sides, but my favorite are the beans. The best part is that you get soppin' bread with your to go. Memphis Tip Top BBQ.

just for starters Beignets are one of my favorite things to eat ever. I also like Alligator too. This is one great combo. At Tailgators, you can get these tasty deep fried treats with an alligator meat center that is almost sweet tasting. The gator is flown in from the south and sometimes they run out so try to get there on Mondays or Tuesdays. Then you can dive in to your gumbo and finish off with a crème brulee. If you stay late, they will get you singing karaoke.

The Fiscalini dairy farm has been in Modesto since 1914 but John Fiscalini did not start making cheese until 2001 after a visit to Switzerland where his ancestors have a long history of making handcrafted cheeses. The award winning cheese is "farmstead' which means that Fiscalini only uses milk from his own dairy. The Fiscalini dairy has also received state and national recognition for environmental responsibility, extraordinary milk quality, and animal welfare issues. Fiscalini cheeses can be found at Save Mart, O'Brien's Market and Trader Joe's. Check out their website at www.fiscalinicheese.com. Turn the page to learn more about ModestoView's "Chef of the Month" Vinny Altadonna from Chefs of New York.

quick bites Here are a couple of quick ModestoView favorites and where to get them. Kabob Pita Sandwich at Twisted Pizza and Kabobs on Yosemite This pita is warmed in the brick pizza oven and then the lamb blend meat is shaved and tucked inside. The place is beautiful and the service is great and the food is so good. 2031 Yosemite Blvd, Modesto, CA 95354 (209) 522-2323

Crab Fondue at Bacchus My daughter said she wanted something warm and cheesy for dinner. The answer had to be Fondu. As far as I can tell, this is the only fondue regularly available. It is not really fondue in the sense that there is the candle under the pot, but this a delectable crab / cheese fondue to dip the sampler of bread as an appetizer. Check it out. Bacchus 1200 I Street Modesto, CA 95354 209-576-8994 and server with a delightful Thai peanut dipping sauce. This is a 100% winner every time. hey bartender

by Chris Murphy

Rachael Bonzi, Clayton's

O

ver the last few years, Clayton's has undergone an amazing transformation from Coffee Roastery and bakery to a full service restaurant and bar. With Mitch Maisetti (one of the hardest working people I have ever met) behind the scenes (and frequently at the bar too) you know that the bar and the food will be done right. Well Clayton's has added some bartending power with the addition of Rachael Bonzi, future Dr. of Mixology. MIXOLOGIST. This is what Rachael likes to be called. Behind the bar at Clayton's you will find custom blended liqueurs that make up some of her specialty Martinis. "Mixing and creating new things is half the fun" says Rachael. It is true, her drinks are very unique, very tasty, and ModestoView was obligated to sample a few so we can pass this on to you. Oh, the sacrifice. Let's learn a bit more about Rachael. Rachel is a lifetime Modesto girl who attended Davis High, started "bartending" at family functions when she was little creating crazy mixes and over the years learned how to make all of the real drinks. At 21, she became a cocktail waitress and started making some of her drink orders and gradually became the bartender. She has been a Mixologist in downtown Modesto for over 5 years and has had a hand in creating drink menus for downtown restaurants and bars. Her new menu at Clayton's is exceptional and very tasty. Don't worry that she is just a foo foo drink maker. During X Fest, she had a room full of people, chatted just enough and turned drinks fast, even making her specialty drinks. When Rachael is not behind the bar, she is lead singer for the band Bonzi and the Custodians. They will have a myspace by the same name soon. In the future, she would love to have her own line of liqueurs, maybe even becoming a Dr. of Mixology. If you have time to sit and enjoy a drink, that is what ModestoView would recommend. Our drink was perfectly chilled, tangy and sweet at the same time. Thumbs up Clayton's 1016 H Street Modesto, Phone: (209)522-7811

Vincent (Vinny) Altadonna, Chefs of New York

W

A UGUST 2007 MODESTOVIEW MAGAZINE

hat makes for a successful restaurant? Great tasting food at an affordable price, a passionate owner who knows his customer, and a great location. Chefs of New York have two out of the three down flat. The food is absolutely delicious. New York style pizza using only the best ingredients. Pastas, salads, and appetizers (try the garlic knots) made onsite to insure freshness and great taste, and hero sandwiches made to order. Owner Vinny Altadonna oversees the entire operation with an energetic enthusiasm not often seen in the restaurant business. He knows his customers and does everything possible to guarantee a great dining experience. Chefs of New York is hard to find. Located in the Glenwood Plaza on Oakdale Road between Briggsmore and Rumble Road you have to look for it but when you find it your search will be rewarded. A native New Yorker, Vinny started in the pizza business at age 8 delivering pizza from his uncle's pizzeria in Brooklyn across the street to his father's customers at the beauty salon that his family owned. Working only for tips Vinny gained an early appreciation for great pizza and responsive customer service. He learned how to cook from his mother. She instilled the importance of patience and only using the freshest most flavorful ingredients available. Modestoview (MV) sat down with Chef Vinny (CV) in his intimate dining room to get his views and opinions on a number of subjects and how he brought the east coast pizza style to Modesto.

She taught me always to use the best and freshest ingredients and to be patient. I still use a lot of my mom's recipes here and she still works for me as a "consultant". She's 87 years young. The rest of my training has been on the job.

MV: How did you decide to open a pizzeria? CV: I grew up in New York and my father had a beauty parlor in Brooklyn. My uncle had the pizzeria across the street and I would pick up lunch at the pizzeria for my father's customers. I was only 8 years old so it got into my blood at an early age. When this pizzeria came up for sale 6 months ago I jumped at the chance.

MV: If you could invite any three people from history to dinner who would you invite and what would you prepare? CV: Three of the people that admire the most are Gandhi, Mother Theresa, and Henry Thoreau. I would start the meal with an antipasto plate (gorgonzola, provolone, and Swiss cheese, Greek olives, sliced salami, sweet & sour peppers and anise). Next I would serve pasta with a cauliflower sauce. For the entrĂŠe I would prepare veal scaloppini with a nice salad. A nice Red Rock merlot would round out the meal. For dessert I would serve a spumoni ice cream that I would get from Alba's Bakery in New York. My mom and dad would be helping in the kitchen (they've been married 60 years) so they would also be joining the dinner party.

MV: Tell our readers how you learned to cook. CV: My mom, Emilia, is my inspiration. She is a 6 star chef in a 5 star world. My early training was cooking at her side.

MV: What is the best selling item on your menu? CV: Our stuffed pizza. We top a pizza crust with pizza sauce, mozzarella cheese, meats or vegetables, with a layer of pizza crust on top. Then we bake it. It's kind of like a giant calzone. It is absolutely delicious. MV: What makes a great pizza? CV: First is patience. You can't rush the cooking process. A great pizza takes time so we take it one step at a time. Second, use only the best ingredients. We use fresh whole milk mozzarella cheese, fresh packed tomato sauce, and the freshest produce and meats on our pizzas. You can taste the quality we bake into our pies. MV: What is the wildest pizza that you have ever prepared? CV: One customer recently came in and ordered a pie with only pizza sauce and anchovies. No cheese and no other toppings. I wouldn't recommend it. MV: What sets Chefs of New York apart from the other pizzerias in town. CV: First, we know our customers. I know most of my customers by name and I know what they like. Next we use the best ingredients. You can't take short cuts if you want to make a great pizza.

MV: What is the most memorable meal that you have ever had? CV: Eight months ago my wife Linda and I celebrated our 29th wedding anniversary at the French Laundry in Yountville. Hubert Keller is recognized as one of the best chefs in the world. The meal was a masterpiece and I got to share it with my best friend. MV: When you go out to eat where do you like to go? CV: Dewz is my favorite restaurant in town. They have great food and great service. My indulgence is the Knockout Burger at the Scenic Drive In. I have lunch there two or three times a week. MV: What do you like to do in your spare time? CV: I love to sail. Mostly I sail in San Francisco Bay but in 2000 I sailed my boat to Hawaii. I've got a 24-foot ocean going sailboat. MV: Final question --- Beatles, Stones, Elvis, or Sinatra? CV: It's got to be Sinatra. Believe it or not he is a distant cousin of mine.

t is summer and the days are warm. This is the perfect time for a wine that is nice and light. Maybe a Sauvignon Blanc to whet your whistle? Something maybe a bit fruiter like a Pinot Gris or Grigio? The ModestoVeiw Wine gurus thought the same thing and they had two words. "Road Trip" Where to go? They went straight to Obrien's Market at Pelendale and Dale Road and hooked up for the weekly wine tasting presented by Sommeliers Tom Bender and Hank Winkle. These two are veterans of the food and drink industry. Tom is is culinary teacher at Columbia College with experience at the City Hotel in Columbia and Hank is an ex-chef that has honed his tasting and pairing skills to make it easier for you and the ModestoView Wine Gurus to find the perfect blend. This month, the wines were all nearly the same price but the tastes were very different. Obrien's prepared a wonderful array with selected Goat Cheeses and the wines were supplied by 4 different distributor reps. Match your palate to the Wine Guru personality and then go shop for a new wine to add to your collection.

Heavenly Wine?

Angel's share is a term for the portion (share) of a wine or distilled spirit's volume that is lost to evaporation during aging in oak barrels. The barrels are typically French or American oak. In low humidity conditions the loss to evaporation may be primarily water. However, in higher humidities, more alcohol than water will evaporate, therefore reducing the alcoholic strength of the product. I stopped by the store recently and felt right at home. People I knew and a cool vibe. They can special order that hard to locate wine you've been searching for or assist you with your wine selections for that special gift or occasion. Angels' Share offers a unique wine bar section where you can enjoy a taste or glass of wine or beer--served in Riedel glasses--while indulging in gourmet pizza imported from Italy or selected appetizers. Theme wine tastings are held weekly on Thursdays and Fridays for the wine lover or join the beer club and work your way through 100-plus import beers. Although football is America's most popular sport, its European cousin, rugby, is internationally renown as the toughest activity in the world. The world's second most popular team sport, rugby was born a hybrid of soccer in 1823, popular rugby leagues are all over the world. This international sport is available to play in Modesto as well. Visit www.myspace.com/harlotsrugby in order to see the latest Stanislaus Harlots rugby news. Ages range from 18 to 50, and there are all sizes and shapes of rugby players. I've actually been to several practices with this group of people, and I thoroughly enjoyed myself. Rugby is a physical, demanding, and fun sport. Also, women can join in on the action. I took my good friend Christina out to a couple games, and they guys have had to ask her to go easy on them! Grab a pair of cleats, some shorts and a water bottle, and introduce yourself to the fun sport of rugby this summer. Practices take place at Beyer High school on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 6:30 pm.

llen Passalaqua creates some of the most interesting artwork. Interesting in that he uses so many different kinds of media, but he is influenced by so many different things. Things that are usual become unusual and his calm, cool and collect demeanor belies the creativity inside. Allen draws inspiration from everywhere and has an amazing ability to capture both the realistic and the abstract. Allen has been behind and involved in some of the most interesting local art movements including the Bancroft Syndicate, as an active supporter of the Central California Art Association and as an art developer with Julie and Greg Edwards for the Off the Air series and now is leading a push for a bigger and more expanded ArtWalk scene. But Allen has a whole other life that not many people in our area know about and many will be surprised that they may have seen his work and not known about it. Let’s meet Allen Passalaqua.

MV: Your work here in Modesto is just a small peek into the work that you do and so much of your work is done for clients outside of Modesto . What is the other side of your work? ATP: My main source of income now is for DC comics coloring comic books. I currently work on Batman Confidential and JLA Classified for DC. I do that work as ILL Productions which is a company I help build with a friend of mine in San Diego. Most of the art work comes out of New York but is created from artists all around the world. I receive the art as digital black and white scans that I take and add color to depending on the script and any color notes.

MV: What was the inspiration that told you to be an artist? ATP: My mother Jeri Passalaqua is an amazing artist and has supported my artistic inclinations since I was old enough to pick up a crayon. My early trains, plains and automobiles became what I draw now.

MV: Music and Art? You have done many shows that are matched up with a concert. How do you believe art and music connect with each other. ATP: I think all creative endeavors are connected. Whether it's a visual artist listening to music as they paint or a musician needing art for a CD cover. We creative types tend to need each other services and appreciate the drive needed to create something out of sheer imagination.

MV: What did you love to do when you were growing up. ATP: I played a lot as a kid. We lived close to my grandparents and they had a huge pool that we walked to after school (my siblings and I). I spent a lot of time with a beebee gun and sling shot walking around our neighbors orchard pretending to fight off imaginary enemy hoards and giant snakes. Even though I spent a lot of time outside playing I used my imagination which helps me today. MV: Did you study art in school? ATP: When I did go to school it was really hard to study my general ed classes. I seemed to always have more art classes and graphic design. I did end up going the rout of a graphic designer which helps me in my illustration and coloring work now. MV: You start many of your works with a photo, is this how you normally begin? ATP: Yes, I work from reference weather that's a photo I've taken, a rough sketch or an interesting image from the web a lot of my artwork takes shape from ref. A UGUST 2007 MODESTOVIEW MAGAZINE

16

MV: What subject has inspired you the most? ATP: Although my knowledge of art history is lacking I do gravitate towards art movements that have inspired me. I read and buy as many books as I can. Art Neouvo and Alphonse Mucha has been an important inspiration but I also have taken may hints from Japanese wood block prints and Chinese brush paintings. Even so I get a lot of inspiration form modern artists and really appreciate street art. Twist (Barry MeGee) and Shepard Fairey started off as street artist and they took that energy and made a living from it. MV: Angry F – Where did this come from? ATP: There's a story behind that. I do use Angry f as my avatar on Modesto Famous, Myspace and have the domain www.angryf.com but the meaning behind it might not be what you think. My mom used to give me a hard time for all the comic book stuff I drew as a kid. Her com plaint was that it was all very angry and suggested I draw something like flowers. Well as any teen would I twisted her idea and drew a very angry flower. I liked the concept and when searching for a com pany name many years later I happened to find my angry flower drawing. So, Angryf is short for Angry Flower.

I also do illustration for many clients nationally and have done art for the San Diego Zoo, Yosemite, Yellowstone , and many other national tourist sites.

MV: Are there any local bands that inspire you? ATP: Well I am inspired by music in general and really love the local Modesto Indie scene. Everyone that plays Off The Air is on my playlist. MV: What challenges does the Modesto Art Scene need to over come. ATP: I tried to think of a word to answer that and no one word worked. It's a combination of many things. The Modesto art scene needs support from the local population in arts patronage, bodies at shows and support from local government. The other thing that could help Modesto 's art scene is a change of our image in and out of town. The Art League is working on that with the Art and Wine Festival. We have some amazing artists here in town and some great galleries here with the potential to be com e a new are for art buyers to com e and get great art. MV: Talk about Art Walk. What do we need to do to take this to the next level? ATP: The art walk is a great opportunity that needs to be expanded on. With new galleries, cafes, The State Theater and the Gallo Center getting involved it will start balloon. I'm really excited about an event that I'm co-presenting after the ArtWalk concert at Deva Cafe with Greg Edwards (Off the Air). We are going to try doing music shows after the art walk around 9 till midnight at Deva to get more people to the art walk and then get them to stay out and have some fun. MV: Describe your perfect art/music and entertainment event. ATP: I want the perfect storm of art and music... where great artists come together and create a tsunami of creativity. A fun venue that allows people to enjoy the music and talk to artist. MV: If you could have studied with any of the masters. Who would it have been? ATP: Alphonse Mucha whom I've already mentioned is one of my favorite artist but I think if I could really go back and work with one of my inspirations it would be Katsushika Hokusai whom lived in feudal Japan during the early 19th century as a woodblock print and Sumi brush artist. He is best known for his series called one hundred views of Mount Fuji .

off the air

Quick Listens:

by Greg Edwards

Art, Wine and Indie

I am very proud to announce that Off The Air will be producing a stage of music at this year's "Modesto Art and Wine Festival." The "Off The Air Stage" will be located near the corner of 10th and J Streets and will feature many great local and out-of-the-area bands. Here's who'll be there: • SCISSORS FOR LEFTY o (San Francisco, Eeenie Meenie Records) rocks a blend "darting keyboards, Strokes-like guitar riffs and disco rhthms" says Billboard Magazine. This lively five-piece has opened for bands such as the Arctic Monkeys, Blonde Redhead and Panic! at the Disco and recently played the main stage at Live 105's BFD show at the Shoreline Ampitheatre. (www.myspace.com/scissorsforlefty) • BUILT LIKE ALASKAo (Oakdale, Future Farmer Records) makes "majestic, melancholic, music." In addition to releasing two stellar records on Future Farmer, these hometown vets of the local music community scored and had two of their tracks featured in the independent film, "Ellie Parker" featuring Naomi Watts and Chevy Chase. "Ellie Parker" debuted at the 2005 Sundance Film Festival. (www.myspace.com/builtlikealaska) • JACKPOT o (Sacramento, Jack Pine Social Club Records) "comes on like a lo-fi Wilco, with the singer Rusty Miller rasping one clever verse after another" says Les Rock Magazine from Paris. The New York Times has crowned Jackpot as "one of California's greatest unknown bands…" and LA Weekly warns that "Jackpot just might end up being huge if they just don't watch it." (www.myspace.com/jackpot) • EL OLIO WOLOF o (Merced) use an acoustic guitar, electric bass, accordion, jazzinfluenced drums, keyboards and bells to craft their "dusky indie rock." Blogger/fan ESTEWARTIST (estewartartist.blogspot.com) compares their live performance to "a pentecostal Tim Burton carnival." (www.myspace.com/eloliowolof) • TWO SHEDS o (Sacramento, UnderAcloud Records) have been compared to Mazzy Star, Lucinda Williams and the Cowboy Junkies. The voice of Two Sheds' singer, Caitlin Gutenberger "clocks in somewhere between PJ Harvey and Cat Power's Chan Marshall..." raves Radio Free Silverlake (radiofreesilverlake.blogspot.com). (www.myspace.com/twosheds)

The Greater Modesto Area has so many great musicians. You can her many of these regularly at our local nightclubs, restaurant, bars and festivals. We take a look at 4 local CDs that you need to check out. There are all kinds of music for you. To see a listing of local bands, go to www.modestoview.com/mama and check the list by genre. If you know of a band that needs to be listed, please email us at mama@modestoview.com

Natalie Pinkis

Natalie is a relative newcomer, but is developing into a great singer songwriter. Her smooth, sometimes haunting songs reflect a cool vibe. Songs like Pretty Girl make you think and Sparks and Ashes make you listen twice. Excellent CD production, recorded at Celestial Sound by Roger Hanner, this is a great new debut EP. You can purchase it through CD Baby on her myspace. Check it out and buy the CD at myspace.com/nataliepinkis

Not an Airplane

Nick Shattell has been adopted by Modesto. He is a genetic engineer with a Vacaville mailing address, but basically lives here, most often hanging at Jeff Bonilla's place. Most importantly the one-man (and sometimes two with Mike Steinman) band, Not an Airplane has an incredible songwriter. The songs just work, his voice is unique and he just seems to fit your mood, whatever it is. See Nick at Modesto Art and Wine Festival. When You Wake and Less Heavy are two great tracks. You can buy these songs on his myspace or I-Tunes. Start here: www.notanairplane.com

• SAPO SUEÑO o (Modesto) recently self-released their debut album, "Reaching For A Starless Sky." They have been featured on B93.1's local music show "15 Minutes of Fame" and list influences such as the Dave Matthews Band, Damien Rice and The Police. (www.myspace.com/saposueno) • AGENT RIBBONS o (Sacramento) say their music is "baroque, intensely theatrical and always, simply, romantic." They list influences such as the Ditty Bops, Johnny Cash and Jolie Holland. (www.myspace.com/agentribbons) • DAVE HANLEY BAND o (Oakdale, heckabad music) are known for their "great folksy-bluegrassy heartfelt songwriting." In 2006 they were a Modesto Area Music Award nominee for Best Acoustic/Americana act. Their influences include Bob Dylan, Neil Young and Hot Tuna. (www.myspace.com/davehanley) • NOT AN AIRPLANE o (Vacaville) is a band of one man, Nick Shattel, known for his "high energy performances." Nick's record, "I Never Wanted to Believe in Ghosts" was produced, recorded and mixed by Craig Long of Paradise Studios in Sacramento who has worked with artists such as Cake and Tony, Toni, Toné. (www.myspace.com/notanairplanemusic) The Modesto Art and Wine Festival happens on Saturday, August 18 from 10 AM - 10 PM in the streets of Downtown Modesto. HIDE & SEEK When I was young, we hated the evening. The moon was a criminal who stole our sunlight. We wanted to stay outside where tree branches were jungle gyms and swings were made with ropes and old tires. These were the days before Play Station, before Xbox, when computer graphics couldn't compare to the carnival in the sky-white clouds bursting like cotton candy-the golden sun, a Ferris wheel, spinning in God's blue playground. Back then, we kids lived by two rules: Count to 10 and hide. Then we darted like squirrels up oak trees and dove under cars, oil dripping like IVs onto our bodies. We hid from seekers and siblings. We hid from chores and homework. We hid from dusk and our parents who called us in for dinner. We chased away the rain by playing freeze tag, and mowed lawns with the burning soles of our feet.

xciting things are swinging in the downtown, so get ready. Music booking of almost biblical proportions is in the works with the Gallo Arts opening. Yes they will have: derivative Americana , a taste/tease of Broadway, classical music, culturally sensitive world-music acts, but wow!, now we have the Latin side. Coming is Poncho Sanchez Latin-Jazz band, The Conga Kings (Candido, Patato Valdez, Giovanni Hidalgo ), and Pablo Zeigler Quintet for the new Tango with Claudia Acuna, wow! And the new and improved booking of the State Theatre bringing you: Robben Ford & Larry Carlton August 1st, Pete Escovedo Orchestra August 18th, and the Tommy Castro Band August 24th, wow! again. So all you folks who love the real deal when it com es to music and the arts now's the time to com e out and support this kind of booking, or believe me, it will not continue. Now back to the rap on sustainable grassroots music scene in the downtown. Blue Monday is reaching a critical mass at Clayton's every Monday with almost capacity crowds every week enjoying themselves. Next month, September, we will add a Saturday night to the live music schedule, with a headliner (Chris Cain or Ron Thompson) once a month to keep things rollin'. Also by August we will offer full appetizer menu on Monday nights with some soul-food thrown in. The lineup for August at Clayton's is: August 6th Joe Barretta Group, August 13th Johnny Valdez Group, (of Johnny & Kelly), August 20th Aubre Johnson group and August 27th Valley Rhythm Section. The Jam goes from 7:30 to 10:30 with white table cloth seating in an intimate setting for the music with inside and outside seating with musicians and artists networking and keeping the scene rolling. Clayton's is located at 1016 H Street behind the Gallo Arts Center . Around the town plenty of quality music. Johnny Valdez slings his guitar Tuesdays at the Speakeasy; at Restaurant 15-0-Five, Friday & Saturday, monster classical guitarist Darren Morris plays the dinner set followed by Johnny & Kelly on Friday and by the Larry Davis Group late night on Saturday. We also have the Fat Cat Music Lounge with George Railey on Tenor Sax every Friday and Saturday night warming you up for the com edy acts to follow from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m. And don't let me forget the Salsa!, Galletto's continues to offer a full Salsa Band every Thursday from 10:00 on for a minimal cover charge to dance to the best in local and regional acts. Off The Air has been using Paul Tremaines restaurant Concetta for monthly music series with great success, stay tuned for next month.

Today, I bring my son to the park as if it were a museum. A slide bends to the earth like the spine of an extinct dinosaur. A tree stands like an ancient obelisk.

The West Side Theatre in Newman continues with eclectic lineup. Some great music came through these doors and will have to find a new niche to carve out in town. On the new side Reg Evans has opened the Miami Bar & Grill in Turlock and is looking for quality bands that have a following to perform. The venue is a nice upscale restaurant and bar that is perfect for quality music, build it they will com e Reg. On the political side, please support live music and the arts in the downtown. modesto classics By Michele Dunwoody

Dixieland in Modesto? Yo u b e t ! I first enjoyed the toe tapping sounds of The Modesto Dixieland Jazz Society many years ago when I happened to wander into the senior center on Bodem Street one Tuesday afternoon. This modest group of jazz aficionados promote the ageless sounds of our lively musical heritage and are celebrating more than 25 years in existence this year. With a membership base that hovers around 104 individuals, and a sister organization to other jazz clubs, The Modesto Dixieland Jazz Society offers the opportunity for local musicians to jam with other jazz enthusiasts from noon until 1:00 PM each meeting. Sign ups for that jam session can be arranged through Deck Hogan, one of the founding members, or Margaret Squires, their music director. MDJS is also host to different guest bands each month. August's visiting band will be The Folsom Street Jazz Band which promises to be an exceedingly wonderful performance starting at 1:00PM and going until 5:00PM! You can find OKOM, Our Kind Of Music, every third Sunday of the month at Club Max inside the Doubletree Hotel in Downtown Modesto. The price of admission is a love for jazz, happy feet for dancing, and a small fee of $7 for members, $10 for non-members. If you're interested in becoming a member, please contact the current president, Mary Menz, at: 522-1571. While writing about this genre of music, it's with a heavy heart that I mention the passing of one the great jazz artists of our present day, Bill Gunter. In the brief time that I had the opportunity to know him, he quickly became a musical stalwart to me. A writer for the American Rag, a musician of substantial proportion, and an animated entertainer, Bill was beyond all these, a friend. He will be missed by and all those whose lives he touched.

“I love living in Modesto. There are so many great things to do and so many cool local bands. But when I have to fly home and visit family back east, I fly Modesto. It is easy, and get to park for free at the airport and get to check in early and get the best seats for my cross-country flight. When I land, I am home soon. Flying Modesto is great. BOOK

I hope that local audiences caught last month's 4 day return of the critically acclaimed WAITRESS at the State Theatre. The film, which is still playing on screens throughout the country, was a mere blip at the local multiplex. The State's management, sensing that this extraordinary little film deserved a wider audience, inserted a limited run into the Theatre's regular schedule. As an added attraction, the staff served up slices of pie, courtesy of David Bradford's Word of Mouth bakery. I'll have another piece of that "I Love My Only Local Independent Theatre Pie," please. Still running--or coming soon to the State: ONCE, a musical drama set in Dublin that the CHRONICLE's Ruthe Stein describes as a "very little film with a very large heart." ONCE is followed by La VIE EN ROSE, the biodrama of the chanteuse, Edith Piaf. Roger Ebert gives the film four stars, calling the film "one of the best biopics I've seen" and praising Marion Cotillard's performance as "extraordinary." Like Piaf, you'll regret nothing by supporting the State Theatre The State was also a first time participant in the Third Thursday Art Walk, complete with paintings and live entertainment in the lobby, popcorn, newsreels from the 1930's on the Big Screen and a doorman (where have I seen him before?).

Starting this fall, the State is launching the "Escape at the State" series of Thursday night movies and events, featuring such films as DIRTY DANCING, the original HAIR SPRAY, EDWARD SISSORHANDS, and CABARET. Look for details here, in the BEE and on the State's web site: www.thestate.org. Plans are being finalized for the first annual "Modesto Wine and Food Film Festival," Friday, August 17, at the State Theatre. Sponsored by the State, the Modesto Art Museum and the Modesto Film Society, the event is designed to showcase classic and contemporary international films about wine and food. The Festival's featured attraction will be the classic LIKE WATER FOR CHOCOLATE, accompanied by shorts LA VENDEM-

MIA (THE GRAPE HARVEST) and the comedy EASY AS PIE. Admission is $12, with discounts available to members of the Modesto Film Society and Modesto Art Museum, and includes wine and cheese tasting and elegant baked goods. Doors open at 6 p.m., and tickets are available from the State Theatre at www.thestate.org, and at the State box office, weekdays from noon to 3 p.m., or by calling 527-4697. Next up for the Modesto Film Society is DOUBLE INDEMNITY, with Fred MacMurray, Barbara Stanwyck and Edward G. Robinson. Halliwell's filmgoer's companion says the 1944 film "still packs a punch by virtue of Billy Wilder's direction and a witty script in which Wilder and Raymond Chandler had a hand." DOUBLE INDEMNITY plays on Sunday, September 16, 3:30 p.m. at the State Theatre. Alfred Hitchcock's American directorial debut film REBECCA is the final offering in the Society's 2007 program, playing on Sunday, November 18. For more information about the Film Society's 2007 schedule, including the benefits of belonging to the Film Society, call 521-8772, email modestofilm@sbcglobal.net, or visit the Film Society at www.ModestoFilm.org. The Society's 2008 schedule will include 9 classic films.

FIRESIDE CHATS by George & Louise Baker Local Filming: Each month a new batch of filmmakers comes to Stanislaus County to make their movies, commercials, music videos, etc. This month is no exception. There are reports of student films being made by filmmakers from New York (former residents of Modesto) as well as local filmmakers. Film Updates: One film shot extensively in the Modesto area is titled EMPTY STREETS. Written and directed by Hawaii native PAUL BOOTH, now a Sacramento resident, EMPTY STREETS tells the story of a war in the Middle East veteran and his difficulty in re-entering society. Based on the experiences of Paul's close friend, EMPTY STREETS has received national attention. •Mr. Booth stated: "My Modesto filming experience was great. The film office was helpful, the press was generous and the people who owned our locations were always con siderate of our schedule and needs... I would highly suggest Modesto to other filmmakers." •Plans for EMPTY STREETS include a screening at the Veterans for Peace National Convention in St. Louis in August. The film has also submitted to the Whistler Film Festival, Chicago International Film Festival, Austin Film Festival, AFI, the Hawaii International Film Festival, and the Northern California Film Festival to be held at the Galaxy 12 Theatre in Riverbank on October 1, 2007. •Support Filmmaking in Modesto. If you want to be a part of it, contact George Baker at firesidefoundation@comcast.net.

Short Subjects: The Visual Effects Society (visualeffectssociety.com) has released its list of the Most Influential Visual Effects of All Time. Topping the list is STAR WARS, followed by BLADE RUNNER. Some of my favorites on the list: the original WAR OF THE WORLDS, FORBIDDEN PLANET, 20,000 LEAGUES UNDER THE SEA and THE 7th VOYAGE OF SINBAD, all from the 1950's. Commenting on the list-and the dominance of special effects in contemporary films--the WALL STREET JOURNAL's Joe Morgenstern says, "No matter how eye popping and/or mind blowing an effect may be, its effect on our psyches still depends on its traditional emotional content."

Film Festivals: Coming the first week of October at the Galaxy 12 Theatre in Riverbank. •October 1: Northern California Film Festival - Featuring films of local filmmakers including Curtis Medina, Kris Price, Ben Beames, John Soares, Justin Spurlock, and films made in Modesto including Empty Streets. More films to be announced. •October 4: 3rd California International Animation Film Festival - Animated films from around the world from classic hand drawn animation to cutting edge 3D. •October 6-7: 6th Annual ShockerFest International Film Festival, a Festival that Fangoria magazine referred to as the "Sundance of the Weird." ShockerFest focuses on Science Fiction, Fantasy and Horror with both independent feature and short films from around the world. •Tickets for all festivals will be available online through any of the festival websites or through the parent site at www.FiresideFoundation.com, or at the Modesto Convention and Visitors Bureau office at 9th & L st, Modesto, or at the Galaxy Theatre.

Do you have a list of all time favorite films you'd like to share? Classic or contemporary films you'd like to see on the Big Screen? Your comments, complaints and compliments are always welcome: rsiefkin@aol.com.

Final Note: There will be a SCREAM FOR ME Scream Queen contest on Friday, October 5 at the Galaxy 12 Theatre. This event features some great prizes and begins at 11 pm. Contact George at firesidefoundation@comcast.net to sign up. Open to all ages.

The State Theatre By Sue Richardson As I thought about this column about The State Theatre, I decided to depart from the journalism I know, choosing instead to knit together random thoughts with punctuation. So many things came to mind. Only five months on the job as general manager, but The State has been a part of my life for years. Of course The State's age sets its apart. It's also the only place in the area to see art and indie films. And it's known for its hospitality. Waitress, a sweet little indie film about life and pies, just closed after a limited engagement. During its four-day run here, patrons were served fresh-baked fruit pies from Word of Mouth Bakery. Only $1.50 a slice and a nice complement to the theater's popcorn and beer on tap, so several people said. I can't think of any other place where the staff dons aprons and delivers slices of pie to patrons. During Graffiti Month, the theater hosted Elvis impersonators, had giveaways and vintage car shows, a barbecue and on Father's Day, crowned more than 300 patrons with flower leis. Popcorn was free that day for Dads coming to see Elvis in "Blue Hawaii." Here, films become events. There are so many anecdotes about this place. Many people recall it from their childhoods. Maybe it was a first date -- or a first kiss. Willie Nelson and some of the music world's greats have played here. And some of the world's finest films have graced The State's screen. This 580-seat, historic theater has an intimacy about it that inspires sharing stories. Check out The State at thestate.org or myspace.com/statetheatremodesto to find out what's going on and when. Both have movie listings, concert dates, special events, dates for the Third Thursday Art Walk and, soon, a new, Thursday night film series. A new designer is going to make the web site more interactive, contemporary and creative. Watch it as it evolves.. Don't hesitate to give feedback. Or become a myspace friend. Join a blog. Tell us what you think and what you want to see. That's one more thing that sets The State apart: Your influence on the selection of films and events. We look forward to your calls and emails. Here are some highlights of what is coming soon.

Screening at 7 p.m. Friday, August 17: Modesto Wine & Food Film Festival, an event presented by The State Theatre, the Modesto Film Society and the Modesto Art Museum, featuring classic and contemporary films about wine and food following a reception at 6 p.m. Guests will sample a delectable array of desserts, Champagne and Fiscalini cheeses, meet the filmmakers and enjoy this year's films: La Vendemmia (The Grape Harvest), by Esther Koohan Paik; Easy As Pie, by Jon Berkowitz, and the classic Like Water for Chocolate (Como Agua para Chocolate) by Alfonso Arau and based on the novel of the same name by Laura Esquivel. Thursday, August 16: Third Thursday Art Walk featuring local artists displaying their work in The State's lobby along with live entertainment, cartoons from the '50s and the theater's famous popcorn - and all at no charge. he planets have lined up, the seasons have connected, the music is the ar t and the ar t is the wine and the community is the festival and we are all together. 2007 marks the 3rd Annual Modesto Ar t and Wine festival. Downtown Modesto is becoming host to many great festivals and events. In July, we had a great X-Fest and now in August, more than 100 ar tists will invade our downtown streets and more than 30 live bands and local cultural groups will perfor m. This is the perfect family event. There will be an entire street devoted to Kid Ar t Creation. There will be stations and different lessons and ways for ever yone to draw and paint on the same large canvas. This is perfect for the 1st time ar tist or the seasoned exper t. Families with kids of all ages are welcome, so welcome in fact that kids under 16 are free with a paying adult. This is better than kids eating free at a restaurant. Vir tually ever y kind of ar t will be represented at the Modesto Ar t and Wine. There will be painters, many painting plein air just for you, there will be sculptures, Potter y, jewelr y, fabric ar t, photography, metal ar t both large and small as well as a variety of live ar t demonstrations. Best of all, these ar tist will be selling their works. Modesto Ar t and Wine is not just for looking, but for meeting and lear ning about the ar tists and hopefully, purchasing the works that you like for your home or business. This is the way we really make an ar t scene thrive. You buy some, and they create more. This creates a perfect circle.

"209 urban want's to know" Where is 209 Urban music going?

The State Theatre Continued from page 23

Many are wondering where is 209 urban music going in 2007? 209 urban sits down with other newspapers & with articles like ours to compare. By Javier Lopez We sat down with 209 Scene's Ian, who reports on the 209 music industry/Game/scene out of Stockton. I had a few questions about their view on 209 music . 209 urban - Why call your article 209 scene if you only include & cover Stockton artists? What's the reason for not covering other 209 Central Valley Artist? Ian had this to say. Ian - Thanks. I was wondering who was running 209 Urban. I ran a 209 Urban MySpace site for awhile but abandoned it when I didn't have time to maintain it. The 209 Scene MySpace site started with the 209 Music columns I write for The Stockton Record newspaper. The name "209 Music" preceded me at the paper. The paper covers San Joaquin County and the foothills. That's where our readers are. We don't have readers in Modesto. So the column only includes artists in SJ County and the foothills, in the same way that the Mod Bee or ModestoView focuses on Modesto area artists. I'd also argue that, while the 209 area code covers Modesto, when people talk about the 209 as a music scene they're typically talking about Stockton.

Sunday, August 26: The film On Any Sunday is being presented at 7 p.m. by Honda/Kawasaki of Modesto.

209 Urban -Ian makes a few good points. But see Stockton isn't the only city gaining national attention. You have Modesto, Tracy, Merced, Los Banos, Manteca, Ceres, Turlock & many other 209 cities involved in the 209 movement. It seams almost all artists from the 209 claim to be king of all kings of the 209! "Right" I see it all the time on My Space. LOL. What 209 artists should do is concentrate on their music. Now lets talk local radio. Are they supporting local artists like they should? Not like the bay area or the East Coast. Do D-jay's in the 209 area spin local music? In the last few months there have been a few local entertainment company/label receiving distribution deals with some 209 artists that have been around already have distributors. Well unless we see more radio stations, D-Jays & the 209 listeners supporting the artist, you're better off leaving the 209 & head to other better well known markets!

Thursday, Sept. 13: Kick-off of The State Theatre's new monthly film series: Great flicks and cult classics best seen on the big screen. First film: Dirty Dancing. On-stage dance-off and giveaways. Nobody puts Baby in the corner‌ Reception in lobby at 6 p.m. Movie at 7 p.m.

We just had the X Fest & the local artists brought the house down. Thanks to the X Fest, more local's can listen to their music & artists gain new fans. That being said, In Latin America we have a saying "Latinos Unidos hamas seran vensido's" United we stand Divided we fall. Wake up 209. There's a lot of talent but little support. 209 urban will continue to support 209 urban artists. Will you? That is the real question. Artist: Bullet G Genre: Hop Hop/Rap Album: Mistah MouthPiece Web site: myspace.com/bulletg209 "In this world of rap music there are artists who make good music & there are artists who stand out!" Rap Artist Bullet G does both. The name (Mistah MouthPeice) alone makes u want to put the CD in your deck. Plus a stand out front cover it make you wonder if the music is as good as the cover. And the answer is it's better than just as good, he has out done himself! With song such as "Tell me how she's your girl" to Stack Ships. From the intro to the song how I feel, Bullet G speaks his mind. With his attitude, Slang, Lyrical skills and an entire new sound for Northern California. This is an artist to look out for in 2007. 10 mics ARTIST: A.M KIDD ALBUM: The Sweatshop Genre: Hip Hop/Rap Label: EMI/Liferdef Records Web site: myspace.com/amkidd Artist A.M. KIDD, Debut album the Sweatshop is a great peace of work coming from an up and coming artist with not only lyrical talent but musical talent as well. It's a hit. The entire project was self produced by A.M. Until I discovered via myspace that A.M, as seen on the Youtube clip, playing piano to one of the tracks on the album, "If daddy was home". I hadn't realized all the hard work he had put in this project, I wonder where the name The Sweatshop came from. It's an album with all the elements. I give it 10 mics. Go on ITunes & buy a song or the entire album. A UGUST 2007 MODESTOVIEW MAGAZINE

Learn Shakespeare!

Did the recent month loaded with Shakespeare plays get your juices going? The Prospect Theater Project begins registration for a Shakespeare workshop. Adults aged 16 and older are eligible to attend. Great opportunity for business professionals who wants to refine their public speaking skills, students who want to enlarge their understanding of the works of Shakespeare, and actors who want to brush up audition material or do guided scenework in a workshop setting. SHAKESPEARE will provide the student with a basic understanding of Shakespearean verse, how Shakespeare 'directs' within the text, and offer a practical application of those concepts through the close study and performance of scenes, monologues from the plays, and sonnets. The workshop will meet for four weeks beginning Saturday, August 11, 2007 from 10:00 to 1:00. The workshop is facilitated by PTP Founding Artistic Director Jack Souza and costs $150.00. To register, or for more information call PTP at (209)549-9341
