EDITORS Greetings Modesto Friends.

Music is an important part of my life. I learned to play piano very early. Like most other kids, I was forced to learn how to play and it wasn’t until later that I learned how much I love playing and how important music is in creativity, art appreciation and life in general. Music is really what makes the world go around for me. My bliss is music, and playing it, whether in the back yard with glass of wine with friends or on stage rocking with my band is just the best. Cool thing is, that we have an amazing music scene, and incredibly, in this day and age of budget cuts and academic test focus, we still have music instruction in the schools. We love MoBand, we love our rock and roll, we love our symphony and our Dixieland jazz and blues. This music skill starts early, in school. Modesto City Schools and Sylvan Union school districts have fought hard to keep music education in the schools. This part is important, it is not just for our music enjoyment, but kids trained in music and arts score high on standardized tests. Learning music changes the way you learn and helps you learn and excel in school. This month has three huge music festivals, X Fest, Sierra View and ModStock. Please plan on going to these events as each and every ticket helps keep local music alive in Modesto. Please support music education in our schools. This is not some elitist luxury, it is critical and core to our culture. Modesto’s Arts, Music, Culture, Dining, History and Education make our community different. We can be just like the other cities, or we can choose to stand tall and support things that fill our heads and hearts with something we can aspire to do and share with our community and the world. We all need to be proud of where we live and we need to work together to make it better. Modesto is the perfect sized city to get involved. It is easy to make a difference and change our city. ModestoView is here to celebrate our positive change, and champion those that make a difference, like Ulices Chavez, who inspires his 7th and 8th graders with an appreciation of both understanding and learning music and creating amazing students in the process. Thanks to Gottschalk Music for being such a great resource. We can make Modesto a city of music. We are already the birthplace of Rockabilly back in 1937 and we can take our music appreciation to new levels. Make it your goal to learn an instrument. It can be a Ukulele, harmonica, guitar, trumpet or anything. You will really enjoy it and so will your friends (even if not at first). Let’s continue our living local. Let’s each make sure we shop local, support our local friends with restaurants and stores. We can do this and really have a good place to live. Huge thanks and appreciation to all of the businesses that advertise here in ModestoView. You are helping us spread good news daily and I encourage you to support their businesses. Thanks for reading and thanks for being our Modesto Friends. Chris Murphy Publisher and Founder, ModestoView chrism@modestoview.com

Back to School Modesto- August11

What?? Is it that time already? Aug 11 is the big back to school day. Be safe on the roads out there. Most of the kids in Modesto will be going back to school earlier than ever this year. The new school clothes, the reams of binder paper, the calculators will be in the backpacks as kids go back in search of higher education. Donate to your teacher’s need list and make sure that our kids have every chance to be successful.

On the cover

On the Cover is Rene Salgado Mendoza, who will be a freshman at Modesto High School this year. At a young age Rene received his first trumpet from his music teacher, the late Ernie Bucio, at Gottschalk Music Center were he played in Jan Leer’s Hart Ransom Eagle Band. He has not looked back. He plans to continue to learn at his new school. All of use here at ModestoView want to wish him, and those starting school this year, the best of luck and to keep on playing music. Every morning I take a look at the news that is happening in the world and most of the time I end up shutting my laptop or turning off my iPad to shield myself from all the negative that we are surrounded with. I don’t understand rising murder rates in places like Chicago where there is culture and beauty and the wars taking place in foreign countries make me feel a bit ill to read about. My point in mentioning all of this is that this makes me think about how lucky we are to be in a safe place and how much we should really focus on the positive things in our lives. I like to start with the obvious - my children, nature, my girlfriend and my love for community. When there is so much to think about it is hard to get stuck focusing on the negative. This past month has been hard on my family and I because my health issues have taken a real turn for the worse again. If you have followed my column here for a while or any of my online accounts you likely know about my health issues. A transplant saved my life at one point and radiation therapy saved me from Cancer. The new battle is based on inflammatory diseases that won’t go away. There will be more trips to San Francisco for treatment and likely more than a few hospital stays yet I remain positive in the face of all of this. If someone asked my advice about how to deal with adversity I would recommend that they immerse themselves in color and excitement and participate in activities that give them the feeling of youth. My girlfriend and I recently made our way to the Gallo Center to watch a performance of Peter Pan by the Yes! Company. It was something that she wanted to do more than I did but I believe that I ended up there because I really needed to be there. It was awesome to see the power of eternal youth in action and there is no no denying the fun of watching pirates and fairies doing all the things that pirates and fairies do. It was a great production featuring some amazing local talent. Take the time to support our local artists. They really need us to

see their shows and fill their tip jars. August in Modesto should be pretty awesome. We are starting with a very cool family event that is taking over downtown and it will fun to see all the kids excited about the spinning tires and smoke coming from SuperKarts going 100 miles-per-hour through our streets. I hope that Modesto really embraces this event. It should be a good time for all involved. Later in the month we will see the annual rebirth of X-Fest. This year feels different in a way. I don’t feel the buzz in the air that I have in the past. Maybe I just have yet to really look into it this year. I will attend and cover the event as always. I hope it goes

well. I’m looking forward to see acts that I knew as a kid. This is another chance to feel young. I’m all for that. Keep your chin up this month and maintain a fighting stance. Punch away the negative and think about the good. Take a trip to the McHenry Recreation area and make a raft your home for a day. Chase your Chihuahua around your yard as it tries desperately to catch flies out of the air. Listen to your favorite songs and have yourself a shower concert that only you attend. Live and live well. This life isn’t about the money. This life is about hope and passion and understanding. Focus on that. I certainly will. Follow me online at facebook.com/rporraswriter or at twitter.com/writerlifeco. I’m also on Instagram as @writerlife where I share some of my favorite photos of my crazy life. If you follow me I will follow back. I promise.

This past month we got to have two good local shows open with artist receptions during July Art Walk, the Emergence show at the Chartreuse Muse, and the Sixtie’s Show at Mistlin Gallery. The first is the every other year presentation of artists new to the Muse, showcased together as noted emerging artists in our Area. Among them, Jennifer Williams of Crow Trading and her photography, and Becky Murphy and her collages. This may explain how our Sixties expert publisher Chris Murphy was found at this art walk reception, rather than over at Mistlin Gallery, where a considerable crowd all night, looking at this theme show where some art of the era and new interpretations recently created on the Central California Art Association Walls. Don Hall particularly stands out with his interpretation and black light painting ala Peter Maxx. MJC’s Dr. Richard Serros also entered four paintings, and new addition to the CCAA board of directors. Mistlin Gallery will change shows just after mid-month. Respected former MJC professor and multi Best of Show winner, Dan Petersen and award winner Stan Holz, ceramicist currently of Escalon will combine for a two-man exhibition opening August 19 for a month long run. Both have over 40 years teaching and exhibiting their arts, with many awards. Petersen’s presentation will be prints featuring his unique style and spiritual clarity in his watercolor landscapes. Holz ceramics will feature his high fire designs that vary from functional to highly decorative shapes. Petersen will also be offering a watercolor workshop over four Saturdays, beginning August 23, at a cost of 250.00. Each session is four hours, and a list of supplies available. Workshop will be held in the Mistlin Gallery education center. Call 209 529 3369 for more information. I got a chance to take in Merced Art Hop on the Saturday after Art Walk. This quarterly event, more interactive than our monthly Third Thursday, and I think we should consider incorporating some of

their ideas into our Art Scene. I started at the Arbor Gallery at the Multicultural Center, to ballet dance presentation in the main gallery, with short films in the auditorium on breaks. Another younger dance group down Main Street at the cinema, with sidewalk artist demos, DJ and installations on the route. At Bob Hart Square, MAH features a number of kids participatory art demos outside in the square. Perhaps Mistlin Gallery will further expand on its Tie Dye children’s art demo done during July Art Walk with the Sixties Show. Next Merced Art Hop is October 18. FASM, aka Aaron Vickery was seen during Art Walk doing spray paint art live in the parklet in front of Picasso’s, and others were back to art on the alley, and on street at 13th and J. Good show to see this month is Lauren Andre’s work at Barkin Dog Grill. A Special MUMfest production at Prospect Theater Project will also feature visual artists with the special Inside Track concerts August 2 and 3. Another visual art opportunity coming up is for related to women artists and cover design contest for book of Poetry and Essays with the Northern California Women’s Music Festival, October 18. A Time to Perform in August

I am hopeful many of you were able to attend a few live performances this summer! Yes Company’s production of Peter Pan was magical and delightful! Many young audience members came dressed as Tinker Bell. Some musicians donned their fairy wings as well! Thanks to all who were involved, on stage and behind the scenes! The interpreted performance was fantastic! It was such a joy to be “Peter Pan”. My team interpreter, Connie Ambroisa-Wann was certainly an evil “Captain Hook”. A shout out goes to Prospect Theater Project for showcasing new plays during their One Act Festival. Migrant Mother, written by Modesto View’s very own Ken White, was truly edu-taining! CHEF

Bellissimo e Delizioso!

FB: Dana’s Family Kitchen FOX40: See Chef Dana every 1st Friday of the month

by Dana Johnson Beautiful and delicious, Modesto’s translation for Verona’s Cucina Italiana! Speaking of ‘beautiful’ I invited Modesto View’s, Jennifer Allsup, Rockabilly View to indulge with me in the total Verona experience. Jennifer was looking stunning in a sleek black cocktail dress, heels, and her hair was pretty in pink! Glad I choose my favorite Michael Kors and slinky silk blouse as us dolls blended in the swanky ambiance when we sauntered into the bar to research the specialty cocktails! Jennifer went straight for the Lemon Drop while I licked my lips for an Italian Kiss (not a real kiss, oh I wish!)! Those went down so smoothly we ventured to try bartender, Frank Avilla’s Paloma Martini and the Esquire Cocktail! As we raised our glasses I was reminded that we were on assignment to serve you, the Chef Viewers! Thank you, I love this job! Edwarda and Executive Chef Jaime Alderete are the original owners of Verona’s for the past 15 years, also married for 15 years. Edwarda told me they have 5 children between them, “His, mine, and ours” The couple takes pride in running a family operated restaurant including Chef Jaime’s parents. Antonia at age 71 makes all the soups and some of the decadent sauces. Jesus at age 82 is remarkable as he specializes in lasagna, tomato based sauces, and tasty Bolognese sauce. He doesn’t mind washing dishes either! Edwarda joined Jennifer and me on the Tuscan style patio as the sun began to set and the parade of culinary wonders began! Bruschetta with peak season heirloom tomatoes and an Antipasto Misto (salami, grilled portabella, cheese, grilled eggplant, artichokes, & olives)! Next, crazy good salad with “Burrata cheese”. Burrata is a Dana~licious new fave; fresh Italian mozzarella with cream curd inside, wow! Edwarda was generous to share her lasagna dinner with us even though Jennifer had a full order of grilled salmon, mashed potatoes, & broccolini, green beans, & grilled corn medley with a MacMurray Ranch pinot noir and I was plated with Chef Jaime’s melt in your mouth veal picatta, grilled

10

polenta, and veggies with Frank’s superb recommendation to pair with a Decoy cabernet. Jennifer must really love her famous musician husband Mike, as she purposely saved him a taste of her dinner that she was thoroughly enjoying! Towards the end of the evening Chef Jaime had some time to visit. I could have talked his head off about food all night! I could feel his culinary passion and tasted how impressively it comes to the table. Edwarda is the family’s heart and soul that keeps patrons feeling like family, too. Edwarda & Chef Jaime both share a deep sense of gratitude to their staff, both past & present, recognizing they wouldn’t be there without them! That’s awesome! Yes, Verona’s has desserts all made on site, but sadly we had no more capacity! Separate lunch & dinner menus, daily specials, full bar, extensive wine & port list, full catering services, and happy hour 7 glorious days a week from 4-7pm! You know where to find me! Modesto View’s signature question: Beatles or Stones? Edwarda without blinking said Stones as if it was a no-brainer! Then Chef Jaime says Beatles, so I decided I was too entirely pleased with the bellissimo evening to question him on his music preference, lol! With gratitude to Jennifer Allsup for braving a night out with me! Can’t wait to do it again!

ROCKABILLY

In the Words of Willie Nelson “On the Road Again” by Jennifer Allsup

Yes, two Modesto View Crew, Michael

J Mangano and me, along with Wayne Campbell (Threelle Internet Radio), Christine McGrew and Nicky Richardson (local artist) will be travelling to Cookeville,TN in late August for a 17 day road trip. We will be playing music and scoping out some Rockabilly history along the way. First stop along our journey is the famous St. James Infirmary in Reno, Nevada on August 24th @ 8p.m. Were you also aware that the Annual Reno Rockabilly Riot takes place during the summer with hot rods, music, vendors and pin-up girls? You might have thought Reno is just for gambling? Now you know there are many kinds of events Reno has for your summer pleasures. We need to bring an event like this to Modesto. Day two takes us to a place I used to call “the White City of Clouds” when I was young girl. In Salt Lake City, we will meet up with Coby Prevailing Atrocity and discuss a bit of the Rockabilly history and the new age of Rockabilly, I hear they have a huge music scene there that should be rather impressive. I chatted with a few locals and asked via Facebook…what is that draws you to the local music scene in SLC?? Some say “the hot chicks in their hot cars”. Others say the music scene is stronger then it has been in along time, with lots of younger bands ROCKIN’ their music. Can’t wait to find out and see what ideas we can bring to Modesto. Driving I-70 we will find the Lost Lake Lounge in Denver on Aug 26, hooking up with our friends and bands, Good Neighbor and the Smoke Stack Relics. Then off to Boulder on the 27th to play another show with these fine gentlemen. Speaking of these rockin/kickbutt boys, they will be here in Modesto on August 9th at the Respect at the Prospect show a “Sweet Pea Knickers and Break Stuff Records production, along with Rachael Bonzi’s new band Urban Tumbleweeds. Also on the bill, one of Respect on the Rivers’ favorite performers from New Orleans, Todd Day Wait’s Pigpen. Show starts at 8pm. $10 tickets… So if you like country and rock n roll all mixed together, you should be here! Rise and shine as the rooster speaks…time to move on down the road you crazy travelers! August 28th we head to Columbia MO.

And meet up with some Modesto favorites The Hooten Hallers. This three piece has made a name for themselves here over the last four years. We are so excited to be on their turf. I am looking forward to meeting some of the great artists that have not played here yet but are extremely fabulous; one most I look forward to meeting is a lady by the name of Irene Allen. AMAZING!! What makes this even more fun to be in the boys’ hood, is that they will here on August 10th at the Gypsy Shack in Jamestown along with Eli Allsup and on August 12th at the Cow Track with Eli & Mike Allsup and The Good Luck Thrift Store Outfit. Show starts at 6:30. A Willy Tea show…as he calls bringing the tribes together ! Just about to our destination, Cookeville, TN. @ the 4th annual Muddy Roots Fes-

LEARN TO PLAY!

INTER School is not just reading, writing and arithmetic. School is about learning and becoming an exceptional human being. One of the ways you can enhance your education is to learn to play an instrument. My mom was a teacher here in Modesto and I learned how to play piano early. She believed in music and education. I started to play trumpet in 4th grade and that lead to guitar and so much more. Music changed my life, it made learning more fun and it increased my academic performance. This is a fact. Arts in school, such as learning to play music increases test scores, increases the ability to learn and creates well rounded and interesting people. We are lucky that we still have music in our local schools and our community needs to show support, both financially and in attending and supporting the events that student musicians present. People in Modesto love MoBand, and MoBand is mostly made up of people that play or played music in school. It connects us all and this month we will meet one of our dynamic music teachers, Ulices Chavez. Ulices is Music Director for Bands and Orchestra at LaLoma Junior High. Ulices went to to Modesto High School and received his degree at CSU Stansilaus and brings excitement to the music programs of Modesto City Schools. Let’s meet Ulices Chavez ModestoView: What was it that inspired you to first learn to play an instrument? Ulices Chavez: In the 5th grade my next door neighbor and the coolest kid in school, Joey Reyes, took up saxophone. I figured if I play saxophone also, Joey and I could walk home together carrying our saxophones and then I would also be cool by association. One month into saxophone lessons Joey quit, but I liked it, and as they say, the rest is history. MV: Who were your musical inspirations? UC: My musical inspirations tend to come in two forms, performance and educational. PERFORMANCE wise, my influences range from classical saxophonists Eugene Rousseau & Donald Sinta to Pablo Casals on cello. On the jazz side there was of course Bird (Charlie Parker), John Coltrane & Johnny Hodges. EDUCATION-

Ulices Chavez ALLY speaking, it all really started with my HS band director at Modesto HS, Gary Runsten. I had a great time in my HS band but it was in college where I started learning, and am still learning, the true meaning of music. Dr. Ed Harris at CSU Stanislaus instilled in me the ethics needed to be good a musician. Whether you go into performance, teaching or conducting the one common component of all successful people in the field of music is that they are good musicians. And my final bit of inspiration comes from my colleagues. Whether I’m at a conference, music festival, concert or a social gathering, we listen to each others groups, we talk to each other, we share new ideas or new pieces of music our groups thoroughly enjoyed....we all learn and are inspired from each others successes. MV: Where there times when you wanted to give up and thought it wasn’t right for you? UC: Yes. I have always said that if I ever become one of those teachers that are in “it for the check”, then I need to do something else. We all know a few of them, those teachers that arrive 5 minutes before the bell rings and then leave right after school. I was feeling that way when I taught HS, but it wasn’t because I didn’t want to teach, I just needed a change. So I stepped down from my HS position so that someone with spunk could come in and take over. I have been teaching junior high school for the past 11 years and love it! MV: How important do you believe it is to have music in the schools? UC: All you have to do is read all of my other answers and that should give you a pretty good idea how important I think music is in our schools.

LEARN TO PLAY!

MV: Do you believe that academic test scores are improved by the skill of playing music? UC: Yes, absolutely! According to study after study for the past decade or two, academic success is higher among students who take music. Music can stimulate the efficiency of cognitive functions in the brain. Playing music depicting a county landscape or improvising a jazz solo requires the creative process (right side of the brain) but in order to achieve that there are a basic set of fundamental technical aspects, such as chordal structure, time & fingerings to name a few, that must be addressed (left side of brain). All of these practices can and do crossover into other areas of academia. MV: You have a deep curriculum connecting students with the history of Rock and Roll, how does this help you with the instruction of playing music and performing? UC: I can’t recall who said this, but I remember hearing a quote that says, “The Blues had a baby and it’s called Rock n Roll”. The first true American form of music was jazz/blues, so in my Band & Orchestra classes I usually use Rock n Roll in historical contexts. If one of my concert bands was playing Ronald LoPresti’s “Elegy for A Young American” (composed the year after John F. Kennedy’s assassination) I might also play for them some early Motown or British Invasion music so the students could put the Elegy into historical context with the modern music of that day (early/mid 60’s). MV: What do you hope you accomplish with each year of music instruction? UC: I hope the students can take away just a little something new from my music

classes each day. There is a much bigger picture that I address with them at the end of the school year but it all builds one day at a time. Basically an appreciation of music and its nuances and how it can relate to everyday life situations whether it be daily interactions, emotional bonds with loved ones or even the playful gestures that make us smile everyday. Everything really is interrelated. MV: Do you have any favorite memories or events in performance or previous students? UC: For me, I would have to say my second year of teaching. I had an average level group, they weren’t the best they weren’t the worst I’ve ever had but I would be hard pressed to find another group that had the music GROWTH that crop of students had. It was like lecturing to a sponge... whatever I said they just soaked it in! It was a fantastic group of kids. As a matter of fact I’m facebook friends with over half of the 52 members of that band! (see attached pic!) MV: What would you ask from our community in support of music in the schools? UC: You want your kids to stay out of trouble, get them in band or orchestra. You want them to get better grades, get them in band or orchestra. Our children are the products of their environment, you surround your child with other respectful, happy, responsible children and it will rub off on them, GET THEM IN BAND OR ORCHESTRA!! Now, from a fiscal point of view, this has not been the traditional mindset of most school districts. District personnel & school boards are all about THE NUMBERS, which is understandable, they want results. However, a fact of life is that music is inherently expensive and in order for school districts to support music at a higher than rudimentary level (we have some music teachers at FOUR different schools!) we need parents and supporters of music to talk to principals, district personnel, attend school board meetings and insist that music in our schools are fully implemented. Every 3-5 years a new “learning” concept or some latest greatest way to educate our children is introduced. Scientific data showing the positive effect music has on academics has been around for a couple of decades now. My question is, why haven’t we fully embraced this?

Ulices Chavez conducting the Ernie Bucio Little Big Band with guest soloists Bill Watrous (trombone) and Mike Vax (trumpet) MV: Our traditional question, Beatles or Stones? UC: I’ve been teaching Hist. of Rock for over 15 years and I still have a hard time answering that question. So here is my cop-out answer.....for groove, I’m going to go with the Stones, for ingenuity I will say the late stage Beatles. My favorite rock band of all time is Dave Matthews Band.

Support Music in Schools

The last MoBand of the 2014 season also featured the presentation of the annual MoBand Scholarship for music education. This year, Sierra Pacific Warehouse Group matched the annual contribution to offer four $500 scholarships. We appreciate the local businesses that support arts and music in the schools. Scholarships were awarded to: Blake Vella - bassoon, Gwyn Davis - clarinet, Richard Gonzalez - trumpet, Tad Stone - trumpet.

it. This is in contrast to going to the mall. Often I have to walk the equivalent of 2-3 blocks just to get to the door of the mall, then another 1-2 blocks of walking to get to my destination. And, in my old neighborhood in San Francisco, I considered being within six blocks of my apartment or destination a successful parking spot. A recent study commissioned by the city of Modesto confirms my experience. There are many parking spaces downtown, in most situations more than we need. Most cities have given too much of their land area in service to cars and minimized areas in service to pedestrians. Park(ing) Day, Friday, September 19, part of next month’s Modesto Architecture Festival, is a worldwide event to draw attention to how we can reclaim some of our street space for the benefit of people. Already, in parts of the design district, three red zones have been converted to two parklets and a bike corral. Expect to see at least 5 or 6 new temporary parklets on J Street for Park(ing) Day and maybe one that will be more long term like the ones at 10th and J. Every parklet is pubic space and available for everyone’s use regardless of where it is. If you own a business or property on J Street and would like to create a Park(ing) Day parklet in front of your space, please contact me for information about how to participate. XFEST turns15! X Fest Turns 15 and ModestoView was there the day it started in 2000 on J St with Flying Blind, Post Garbo, Blessid Union of Souls in front of a gigantic cruise ship with 5 other stages and 20 other bands and a block long disco and we were there with a view from our skybox. Now, 15 years later, X fest is the Central Valley’s best summer party. X Fest has something for everyone and it is a fun night in the Central Valley. When it all began XFest was designed to be a great party, with fabulous entertainment and cool commmunty feel for a great price. If you have been to a big concert lately, you have been paying $40 - $300 and more to see a show. The 2014 XFest is still $20 for a full evening of fun. Chris Ricci runs a great event with the local stage production teams making it happen. METAL

XFest Metal and a Good Cause for a Good Friend

Hello friends and neighbors, it’s been a while but I am back with the metal news of the 209!! The biggest story of the day is X fest and the Support Local Music Stage which features some of the raddest bands in our local metal and hard rock scene. We used to beg for metal bands at X-Fest and now it’s one of the main draws to the festival. Dude, this lineup is sick. See page 16 for the bands and their set times. I asked two longtime veterans of our scene, “How important is it for metal bands to play X fest? Dave Ussery of Brutal Innocence said “More important than most realize. The metal scene has been an important part of Modesto music since the early 90s. It’s nice to finally be acknowledged”. Jojo Rush of Nothing But Losers also commented “I would say being a metal band that has been invited to play three years in a row should be a big deal to the whole metal community shows that metal has a place in Modesto, even at Xfest”. All these bands have tickets so hit up your favorite band on the show and get yours today! Our scene is full of good people doing good things. People like Pammy Von Duke of Pamsterdam Promotionz who has done a number of benefits for people. The GMA has done a number of benefits and Turlock natives Broken Trojan have a benefit coming up on August 9th at The Grizzly Rock in Turlock with Soapbox, Antithesis of it, BNUT, and Irietide. Donations will be taken at the door for medical expenses. One last thing a few bands would like me to print their up-

Hello Modesto its your friend Tru Luv Lopez. It’s hot in the city all month long and on Aug 23rd the Valley’s Biggest Party Celebrates 15 years (XFest 2014). I hope you are ready to have a good time and witness live in concert some of your favorite old school and new school artists and bands. I have put together a list of some local artist and DJs and suggest you go see perform on stage. These very same artist and DJs may appear on this years MAMA Awards. I will be watching their performances. After all, in Modesto there’s lots of talent you can’t afford to miss. Do not pass on an opportunity to have a good time and hear new music. DJ Tease will be on stage along with DJs like DJ Topek & DJ Secret. Pure 209 will be taking the stage and spinning will be DJ Adrian Espinoza, DJ Analog Disko, DJ Dan Aguilar and DJ Nick D. Rap artists will perform and one that stands out is Snow Tha Product with her hit song “Hola”. She is gaining national attention and her music is as hot as August in Modesto. From the bay area, E-40 will be there in addition to Berner and returning artist Dev. Our home town favorites like the Moonshine Bandits from

Los Banos and one of my personal favorites Bone Thugs-N-Harmony will also entertain. ACOUSTIC Here’s A Quartet

by Aaron Rowan Here’s A Quartet, Call Someone Who Cares. A certain local songwriter told me not long ago that they envied my lifestyle, always running around enjoying music festivals all over the place and such. I reckon I have been quite blessed with the adventures I have been able to embark on. I myself have never been particularly envious of anyone else’s life - probably the only deadly sin I’ve never harbored - but I will make an exception for someone like Rebecca Roudman. Rebecca gets down on the cello like you would not believe. She is one of the greatest and busiest musicians in California, constantly on the move: having performed with 10 major northern CA orchestras (including the Modesto Symphony) and at least as many independent bands… touring Brazil, China, Europe and all around the USA…sharing the stage with Carlos Santana, Elvis Costello, Joan Baez, George Clinton and more…contributing to major film soundtracks such as ‘Looper’ and the upcoming ‘Kill The Messenger’… teaching music at numerous bay area schools…selling out shows and earning standing ovations all over the place with her main string band Dirty Cello for the past several years… and somewhere in the midst of all this, she miraculously finds the time to talk to me. I have had the privilege of featuring Dirty Cello twice as part of MUMfest, as well as serving as a part-time booking agent for them since last summer. I still have not fully recovered from the shell-shock of being asked to take on that role This amazing string ensemble returns to our city this month to share their blend of gypsy jazz, blues, classic rock and world music as part of the lineup of ‘Symphomania,’ a string music showcase at the Prospect Theater. August 16 at 7 PM, Dirty Cello will share the stage with multi-instrumental duo Saul & Elena, visiting from Nevada

City; and Xin Zhang, classically trained soloist of the erhu (two-stringed Chinese fiddle), one of the most beautiful instruments out there. This won’t be a night of purely instrumental music, in case that‘s not your thing: Rebecca often sings while her cello gently weeps - and there’s a good chance we will enjoy her take on a certain Beatles classic - and Saul & Elena deliver some sweet vocal harmonies. Tickets are $15 in advance by emailing modestounplugged@ yahoo.com or calling 209-543-5306. Another big musical event is happening at the Prospect this very weekend, right in the midst of the Grand Prix race. Tomorrow and Sunday nights 8/2 and 8/3, enjoy the Inside Track Music & Art Fest, featuring talent from all around California. Saturday night’s lineup includes bay area Americana outfits The Dull Richards, Full Moon Rooster, and Three Times Bad; local country boys The Dustbowl Children; and touring songwriters Chelsey Heidenreich, Rylei Franks and Bobby Schaefer, passing through from Washington and Idaho. Sunday will feature indie-folk group Colorado Road, jazz/soul band Aaron Minter & The Italian Administration, L.A. songwriter Duane Mark, and country/rockabilly groups The Honey Shots and The Catfish Boys, both Modesto-based. Each night’s cover will be just $5. Saturday runs 7 PM to midnight; Sunday goes from 5-10 PM. A new opportunity is open to all the lady songwriters of NorCal this October, when the first Northern California Women’s Music Festival comes to town. Patty Castillo Davis is serving as the songwriting competition division chairperson, and is currently accepting submissions of original songs in CD format, $10 per entry payable to NCWMF, which can be mailed to P.O. Box 541, Ceres, CA 95307. The first prize winner will receive studio time at Modesto Sound. Stay tuned for further coverage of this daylong festival in the October issue.

POETRY

Let The Games Begin by Sam Pierstorff MJC Professor of English, Ninja Poet Warrior and ModestoView Poet Laureate

This is for the first letter learned—etched with a fist around a blunt pencil, circling the page like a tornado. His name is Oscar, and these are his Os, drawn like targets or springs bouncing across a page. And this is for Violet, her Vs like empty sugar cones, the arrow of her initial pointing down though her head is always up. This is for the first syllable of the first song on the first day of preschool. This is for the hug at the door—and for the first kid who cries when he arrives and when he leaves. This is for the child who is safe now—whose neighborhood walls are crumbling under the weight of poverty and divorce. This is for the kid who has felt a leather belt against his bottom, or an open hand across the same lips God made to smile.

But this is not where the story ends. This is where it begins. This is for the sandbox where castles are first built— where boys become kings and girls do not wait for a prince to feel alive. This is for blue food coloring that turns water into oceans, and for glue that makes imagination stick to brown paper bags. Yolanda makes a puppet with curly black hair like her own. Kevin makes a wolf. All morning he howls. Today, pencils are sharpened for tracing the alphabet. Tomorrow, the Pulitzer Prize. Before the Sistine Chapel, there were finger-paints. Before ballet, the Hokey Pokey was what it was all about. So this is for the teachers who will lead marches across grass even in the rain and strum guitars, the room echoing with the voices of children who should never be told to shut-up. This is for the surrogate mothers and fathers of America— the teachers—who will play all day on bended knees so our kids can stand tall for the rest of their lives.

BLUES & JAZZ The Music Never Ends

Well some of my favorite musicians have left the building this time round on this astral sphere, RIP Horace Silver and Johnny Winter. Horace Silvers music was out of the get it in your soulness groove generation with jazz melodies and rhythm and blues underpinning with great arranging and soloists coming up through the ranks, he will be missed. Even though I’m primarily a pianist, Johnny winter is one of my favorites of all time, in his “Still Alive & Well” albums “Rock me Baby” has one of the best rock guitar solos of all time. I remember burning out countless Johnny winter albums listened to at volume ten. One day as a teen in the doctor’s office he asked me “what I attributed my high end hearing loss to,” I smiled and said “Johnny Winter of course.” And another casualty in our musical world, & our economy is Yoshi’s Jazz Club in SF is no more. It will have a makeover and change will not include Japanese food, Jazz or the name Yoshi’s but Yoshi’s Oakland is still alive and kickin’ so please support this incredible venue for live music. And also take some time out to hear some live music and the arts of our own town as well this month, think globally and act locally. Blue Monday monthly Invitational Jam continues at the Barkin’ Dog Grill on the first Monday every month. It’s gonna be smoking: stellar Jazz guitarist Barry Finnerty is coming! Barry will be getting off tour with the Brecker Brothers in Europe. He is an eclectic modern jazz guitarist along the lines of Mike Stern, Pat Martino who can play Bebop to Funk, Rhythm & Blues with effortless flawless lines. He has played with Miles Davis, Dave Mathews, and the who’s who of west and east coast Jazz musicians. Host band Aug. 4th is Johnny Valdes & Straight ahead: with Dave Hawks on drums, John Adey on bass, and Martin Martinez on sax. Come down you won’t want to miss this Blue Monday Party. Will be playing Blues, R & B, Funk and Latin music for listening and dancing. Show goes 7:00 to 10:00 PM. Call for reservations if you want a good seat.

“Santa Cruz”

by Ken White

Photograph by Heather David.

Summer of ’66. The Beach Boys propelled us over the hill to Santa Cruz. “Surfin’ Safari” and “Surfin’ U.S.A” filled our ears and minds. We were escaping the hot, dry, suffocating valley. We were seeking the cool, clear, cleansing Pacific Ocean. And the blonded, bikinied surfer chicks. Vanston drove his ‘55 Chevy with the two surfboards hanging ten for dear life, while Lanston snoozed, swaddled in his Block “D” jacket. Jim tail-gated in his ‘55 Chevy Nomad station wagon with its own boards. And Robert, with me riding shotgun and white-knuckling it, power-drifted the canary yellow ‘65 Mustang through the Santa Cruz mountains. Dave and the other Jim hunkered down in the back seat. Robert’s customized stereo echoed off the redwooded canyons. He souped up sound systems the way our classmates tricked out cars. We were the Valley Boys, the Sissified Surfers who skateboarded and belly-whomped the Curve because the ocean was a lifetime and lifestyle away. We wore Pendletons or striped surfer shirts, baggies, Huarache sandals, and our semi-long, bushy blonde hair with sweeping bangs resembling the Banzai Pipeline. Robert had tucked pints of brandy and sloe gin in the Mustang’s air cleaner so we wouldn’t get busted if the CHP stopped us. For us high school graduates, the legal drinking age was still a few years away. We never got to toast the setting sun at the beach because some loser surfer punks spied the liberated bottles on the back seat floor and got to them first. We found the dead soldiers lying on the sand near the parking lot. We cruised Beach Street and the Cocoanut Grove because that was where the action was. Vanston, Lanston, and Jim found the girls because they knew what to say and how to say it. Dave and Jim looked for trouble because it always came looking for them. Robert fiddled with his stereo because that’s what he knew and how to do it. I walked alone along the beach because I didn’t know any better and had no place else to go. The cool, salty air and screeching gulls were comforting. Jan and Dean serenaded us as the sun sank into the ocean. And we headed home. Back to dusty reality.

that day.” Today Bill is back on the bike carefully every day doing 20 to 25 miles out of Escalon to Riverbank and back. For Bill, biking is not only his preferred way to exercise, but he also enjoys being able to meet new people that share the same love for cycling as he does. Bill’s message to his fellow cyclists, Thank you, you saved my life and I’m eternally grateful, thank you for that and your continued support to keep me going.

Revived on the Ride by Efren Martinez

At 59 years young, William L. Madsen has side of being in a hospital when his heart been a bicycle enthusiast for 10 years averaging around 90 miles a week in and out of group and solo rides. Bill, as his friends refer to him, had no idea that he was even close to having a heart condition outside of some high cholesterol. One Wednesday evening group ride out of Ripon, from George’s Bike Shop, Bill suffered a major heart attack at mile 10. The last thing Bill remembers is that he was in the front of the group and then just fell over on his bike. The other cyclists immediately came to his side and Bill then told them that he was having chest pains, Bill then went into cardiac arrest. Thankfully Dr. Diaz was along for the ride that night and immediately started to administer CPR. He along with the other cyclists who also had similar background in medical emergency experience started to assist in trying to bring back Bill to life. Bill couldn’t have been in a better place out-

attack happened. On the doctors lead, he orchestrated some in the group in riding out to the various crossroads to direct the emergency vehicles to Bill’s location. After all, they were out in the country and if Bill might have been riding alone that day, well I shudder to think how Bill’s story would have ended. According to Bill, it was by the grace of God and not luck to have had so many caring fellow bicyclists riding with him that night including Dr. Diaz. MD., Jaime Cardosa, ER nurse, Steve Meece, Ripon Police officer, and Jared Cardoza, a Cardiac Technician. Bill’s heart attack was a massive one as the team of cyclists took turns administering CPR, they struggled to bring him back to life. In fact, once they got his heart to start beating again, it stopped. When the ambulance arrived the rescuers could not find his pulse three times during their at-

tempts to save him. After the last time, then they put on the paddles to shock his heart. Bill is a blessing of God and we are grateful to have him with us today. Bill told me that his heart attack could have happened on the Monday prior to that Wednesday’s ride. That day Bill was riding by himself out in the country near Escalon. In Bill’s own words, “God had other plans, he had it so that I was riding in a group with medical professionals that could save my life that day and Efren, I give all the glory to God because of his will and how it all unfolded

BARGAIN

Happy August Modesto by Monica Barber

“August is like the Sunday of the summer,” she tells me before finishing the thought with a giggle, “And it’s pretty hot too!” I’ve settled in this afternoon in the Stanislaus County Library in Downtown Modesto for the next 30 minutes to write. Miss Aly who about to enter the 5th grade soon tells me her take on the month and I agree. August is like the day before you start school and work; the last hurrah before fall and like a Sunday it’s simply best enjoyed. While entertaining how wonderful the free Wi-Fi is Aly suggests I visit the Goldfish before I leave. Leave everything to the imagination but enjoy your leisurely August by saving a few dollars while trying new things… The Stanislaus County Library happens to be a great untapped resource in our area. Free books, dvds, periodicals and internet are among the perks in addition to the free AC. Kids can enjoy Story time or other activities. Library Cards cost $1. Look for your nearest branch in the Modesto Area, get into reading again and enjoy the perks! http:// www.stanislauslibrary.org/ Climbing the walls can drive you absolutely nuts unless you find somewhere it’s absolutely encouraged. Take a trip to Stonehenge, an indoor climbing gym where you can climb to new heights while exercising your strength, flexibility and balance. They are located a few blocks south of Downtown Modesto. First time climbers are $23/regu-

lars are $15. Set your sights on new heights! http://www.climbstonehenge.com/ The antsy feeling you get when you want to escape is pretty natural especially when the temperature soars. A great way to cool down is to get a bit of culture mixed with a hint of exotic. Entertain yourself reasonably by taking in a performance of South Pacific at the Gallo Center. The performances run August 9th-10th and 16-17th with tickets starting at $19. http://www.galloarts.org/ Looking to end your month with a bang. Check out two of the area’s most coveted events. X-Fest returns 15 years strong on August 23 and always promises a great time for a deal. It is one of the areas biggest parties with awesome music headliners paired with amazing food and beverage vendors for only $20. 21+ event. http://www.xfestmodesto.com/ Valley’s Got Talent returns August 29-30 with some of the great talent that our area has to offer. This is a stage event for nonprofessional talents in various specialties. Now the competition is quite steep and there’s nothing but stars shining bright on stage aiming for the prizes. Head out and support this year’s talent because you never know who might be tomorrow’s superstars! Tickets $10-25. http://www.galloarts.org/ Enjoy your month long Sunday… Happy August Modesto!

AUGUST 23

The Sierra View Music festival is so much more than a big fun concert. You will hear the big hits from Marshall Tucker Band, the crowd favorites April Wine and one of our favorites, John Waite singing Change and his hits from the Baby’s. Also performing will be Thin Black Line, Luvplanet, Moonalice, Remedy and The High Voltage Band. This show is about the gift of music and encouraging more people to learn to play music with a music scholarship in memory of a wonderful woman. Heidi Brunk lived in Oakdale as a wife, mother, daughter, music teacher and friend to hundreds. She lost her life tragically in 2008, but her musical enjoyment and passion for teaching lives on in the Heidi Brunk Foundation. Sierra View was created to award students with music scholarships, the Heidi Brunk Foundation is a 501 (c) (3) organization that raises charitable funds through donations and ticket sales from the Sierra View Music Fest. Tix are $40 or you can get special VIP tix for $250 or $2000 for a table of 8, featuring special seating and meet and greets
